The '12-week rule' is one pregnant women shouldn't be scared to break

$

Most expectant mums wait until the 12-week mark before sharing their baby news with the world. There's one main reason for this: of the 10 to 20 percent of pregnancies that end in miscarriage, most happen before the end of the first trimester.

More: Gordon Ramsay and wife Tana use fans' support to get through miscarriage

One Australian mother has bucked the trend by revealing her pregnancy at 9 weeks on Instagram. Sophie Cachia, who is already mum to 2-year-old son Bobby, said that keeping her pregnancy a secret from her readers would go against her mission to share the "incredibly intimate details" of her world on her blog The Young Mummy.

Why does society think it strange — wrong, even — for women to reveal their pregnancy before the 12-week mark? Of course it's heartbreaking to go through a miscarriage and many women find it difficult to talk about. But equally, it can be really hard to keep the loss of a pregnancy quiet. To put on a brave face to the world when your heart is breaking and pretend life is normal when the opposite is true.

Really, why does the "12-week rule" exist? Is it for the good of the mother, or simply to make society feel more comfortable about things that are uncomfortable to talk about? There shouldn't be any rules when it comes to pregnancy beyond those that exist to protect the health of the unborn child. Whether a woman wants to keep her pregnancy a secret for months or shout the news from the rooftops as soon as the pregnancy test shows positive, that's her decision to make.

In some cases, it's tough trying to hide a pregnancy that's already obvious. Some moms-to-be start showing way before 12 weeks, and they shouldn't have to feel uncomfortable or self-conscious about their changing body.

Pregnant women need a support network, and that support is crucial if a pregnancy ends in miscarriage. By feeling that they have the right to talk openly about any aspect of their pregnancy at any stage, including those early days and weeks of excitement and nerves and morning sickness and tiredness, women can have that support from the beginning.

I watched Orlando respond to hate with love – and it gave me hope

“I know this is totally unrealistic, but I'm feeling paranoid about some sort of shooting.”

I said this to my friend, feeling a little foolish, and with a bit of a nervous laugh. It was Saturday night. We were heading to a concert in downtown Orlando, on Saturday evening. The death of Christina Grimmie was on my mind. I was just a tad nervous that I was going to a show the night after she was killed. I thought I was being stupid, fearful, and plain paranoid. But I couldn’t shake the feeling, as I was afraid that someone, some hateful person with access to a gun, would get inspired to walk into a concert and murder people.

My friend pointed out that we'd be downtown, far from where Christina was killed. She told me that downtown was crawling with cops. When we got to the show, I saw an officer outside and we went through security. My tiny, nervous little feeling was soothed. I even forgot enough to go out to a couple of bars afterward before deciding to leave downtown early, just before midnight.

I woke up the next morning to news that there had been a shooting in Orlando that night — the worst massacre of its kind in recent American history — in a place designed to bring people together in friendship, love and joy: Pulse, a gay nightclub.

The Orlando nightclub shooting left at least 50 people dead, and 53 wounded.

The Orlando massacre. Orlando. My hometown. I spent my college years here. I love it so much that I moved back after living away for less than two years.

I can’t get my mind around this; it is simply unreal. I'm shocked, helpless. I can’t focus on anything. When I do, I feel sick, and tears come to my eyes, so it’s better not to focus.

Like many who have been affected by acts of terror, I’ve found myself hooked to social media, and to news outlets. I am continuously searching for more updates, for breaking news, for information, trying to make sense of it all. I have learned, to my relief, that none of my friends were at Pulse. It is literally nauseating each time I see a friend on Facebook asking for thoughts and prayers about relatives and friends they haven't heard from since the shooting.

Even as I read all these headlines, these press releases, these articles, my eyes skim over the name of my hometown. I am still having trouble believing this happened in Orlando, my Orlando. Each time Obama said "Orlando" in his speech, it still felt absurd that he meant the city where I fell in love, where I took my first steps as a baby, where I got married, where I met my best friends.

I feel disconnected with the rest of the nation, to the rest of the world, because all of my thoughts are in Orlando.

But I'm not really talking about how I was out in Orlando’s downtown, just a mile away from the shooting, nor about how it happened in my hometown.

I'm not talking about gun laws, although having access to assault rifles is simply ridiculous, and defies common sense.

I'm not talking about extremism, or how being an extremist of any sect is dangerous, and oftentimes hateful.

I’m not even making this about hate, and what hating a person, a group, or a community, can do.

I want to talk about love. Love is love, and it will always win. Everyone is capable of it, and everyone has a right to it.

This is about how blood bank centers in Orlando literally had lines out the door, down the block, around the corner. How shortly after noon, just over seven hours after the hostage situation was over, I was turned away for giving blood, because all blood banks were at capacity, due to the overwhelming number of people showing up, wanting to give blood, to do something, anything to help.

This is about how Pulse was co-founded by the sister of a man who died of AIDS; how it was meant to be a safe haven, a place where the LGBT community would be welcomed. This is about the men and women who died and were injured in the Pulse nightclub, people who simply wanted to have a fun night.

This is about all the people—in Orlando, Sandy Hook, Brussels, Liberia, New York City, Paris, Sinai, San Bernardino, Oregon, and many more—who have had their lives violently ended, and the families and friends whose lives have been forever altered in the most awful ways. This is about how the world, starting at the individual level, simply needs to accept, and to love one another. Only then can these terrible murders, these massacres, come to an end.

Anorexia isn't caused by wanting to look good in a bikini

A new study into anorexia makes a controversial claim. According to researchers from INSERM medical research institute, Paris Descartes University and Ste. Anne's Hospital, what motivates sufferers is the pleasure of losing weight, rather than the fear of gaining it, as per popular belief.

More: The symptoms of hormone imbalance most women are missing

Researchers showed volunteers (some with anorexia, some without) pictures of women of different weights and asked them how good they would feel if they had the same body shape. While the healthy women preferred the images of women of a "regular" weight (whatever that may be), those with anorexia chose the images of underweight women as the most desirable. During the experiment, the extent to which they sweated (a sign of excitement) was also measured, and it was recorded that the anorexic women found the images of underweight women most stimulating.

So far, so expected. It's another finding that forms the basis of the researchers' claim that the main criteria for an anorexic diagnosis is incorrect. Although the anorexic women didn't like the pictures of very overweight women, they considered them to be only slightly less desirable than the healthy volunteers.

An anorexia diagnosis is generally based on three international criteria: eating less food (which results in weight loss); a distorted perception of weight and body image; and an acute fear of gaining weight. Lead researcher Philip Gorwood believes that current treatment methods may be failing many patients because the third criterion is based on a major misunderstanding of the disorder, because professionals have failed to recognize that a defining feature of anorexia is the desire for weight loss as opposed to a fear of weight gain.

More: Eating disorders are a mental illness — not a choice

For some anorexics, their disorder may well be motivated by a desire to lose weight. But more often, it's way more complicated. Some professionals believe eating disorders should be mental illnesses in their own right, and there's no denying that the line between the two is blurry. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America classes eating disorders as a "related illness" to mental illness. Many professionals and publications highlight the common co-occurrence of eating disorders with mental illness. It can be a vicious cycle: and it’s not always easy to pinpoint the starting point. Did feelings of low self-esteem, worthlessness or powerlessness trigger the eating disorder? Or did the eating disorder cause the mental illness? In the case of anorexia, where extreme weight loss and malnourishment is common, psychological changes can have a severe and negative effect on mood states.

Depression is often a factor. In a 2008 study by University of Pittsburgh Medical Center researchers, 24 percent of bipolar patients met the criteria for eating disorders. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, as many as half of all patients diagnosed with binge-eating disorder (the most common eating disorder in the United States) have a history of depression.

Anorexia, like all eating disorders and mental illnesses, is a complex disorders with no room for a "one size fits all" mentality. Some sufferers may desire weight loss — although whether the word "pleasure" is appropriate to use to describe the effects of anorexia should be up for debate, as it makes this desperately cruel, relentless, sometimes fatal illness sound superficial and self-indulgent. However, many others do have a real fear of weight gain.

And for some anorexics, neither may be applicable. Their disorder may stem from an overwhelming need to have control, a fear of change or compulsive behaviors. Counting calories, macronutrients, steps taken, etc. may be more important than weight. It may be a reaction to abuse or some other traumatic life event. It may stem from feelings of failure and negative feelings about oneself as a person — and not at all about weight or physical appearance.

Of course, it may be a combination of several of the above.

Studies into eating disorders are crucial. The only way to improve understanding, identify the right treatment methods and increase the recovery rate is to carry out research. The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders reports that anorexia is the most common cause of death (up to 12 times higher than any other condition) among 15- to 24-year-old women.

But it's simply not helpful to reduce such a complicated illness to "a pleasure in losing weight." Any sufferer will tell you that even if they can relate to this motivation, it's only a tiny part of the picture.

Kacey Musgraves writes and deletes pro-gun tweet in response to Orlando

As we all try to deal with the tragedy in Orlando, social media feels like a natural place to turn. It's become the place where we learn news, express opinions and, increasingly, share sorrow. Country singer Kacey Musgraves feels the same way, but she learned today that not all of her fans agree with her opinions. She took to Twitter to share a message of love, couched in with what reads like a pro-gun message encouraging even more violence. Once she realized just how strongly people were reacting to her statements, she deleted the tweet.

Amber Heard calls the cops on Johnny Depp, but he’s not even in the country

Amber Heard is not playing around when it comes to her restraining order against Johnny Depp, and she just called the cops about a possible violation.

Here's what went down. According to the order of protection Heard gained against Depp after claiming he assaulted her during an argument the weekend before she filed for divorce, not only can Depp not come within 100 yards of her or their home, but he is also restricted in what he can have removed from that home.

More: Johnny Depp accuses Amber Heard of running from his lawyer

The document includes what's called a move out order, which states he can have items removed that he needs until the couple's hearing on Friday — things like articles of clothing, toiletries, etc. — but Heard's beef is that, according to her, Depp's people are taking things like artwork and furniture.

Heard feels that this is a gross violation of the order, especially considering Depp is not even in the country right now — so he obviously will not need any of the items in question immediately.

Depp is currently in the Bahamas, where he has a home, so he was not present during the alleged ransacking.

More: Johnny Depp's downward spiral was obvious years ago

According to TMZ, his people have confirmed they removed "personal items" from the home that they believe fall within the scope of the move out order.

At Friday's court appearance, Heard is expected to ask for a permanent restraining order against her ex, and rumor has it Depp will not be testifying beyond pleading the fifth when asked about the alleged domestic violence in the couple's relationship — nor will he submit a written declaration about it. Because of this damned if you do, damned if you don't situation, TMZ says, the judge is almost certain to grant her request and issue the order.

Korean pulled pork shoulder for your tangy-sweet-salty craving

Usually, when I search the internet for pork shoulder recipes, I get two sides of the spectrum: Traditional Latin American pork shoulder (pernil) or a North American-style barbecue pork shoulder recipe. Pernil is typically pork shoulder roasted with a garlic citrus rub, and while it tastes amazing (trust me, I know because my mom makes a good one) sometimes you want something new.

Enter Korean barbecue pork.

More: Korean BBQ recipes

I’m here to tell you, you don’t have to among North American, pernil, or Korean-style. I decided to do a little experimenting, and I came up with this pork shoulder recipe that’s full of Asian flair. You make a simple marinade of garlic, ginger, vinegar, oil, honey, cilantro and green onions — you add that all over the pork shoulder, roast it and you’re golden. Serve it with a simple side salad, rice or stuffed in Boston lettuces leaves (which is my favorite).

Korean pulled pork shoulder recipe

If you like a little heat, feel free to add some chili powder or hot sauce to the marinade.

Serves 4 – 6

Prep time: 1 hour | Cook time: 4 hours | Total time: 5 hours

Ingredients:

  • 5 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons ginger, grated
  • 1/4 cup white wine vinegar
  • 1/4 cup sesame oil
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 pounds pork shoulder
  • Boston lettuce leaves, for serving (optional)

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the minced garlic, vinegar, sesame oil, olive oil, honey, cilantro, green onions, salt and pepper until well combined.
  2. Massage the paste into the pork shoulder and let it sit in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, but up to 24.
  3. Preheat your oven to 275 degrees F.
  4. Cook the pork shoulder for 4 to 6 hours until tender, falling off the bone and cooked through to an internal recipe of 180 degrees.
  5. Once cool enough to handle, slice and serve with Boston lettuce leaves.

Guilt is just a thinly veiled rip-off of the Amanda Knox trial

$

If you're into soapy crime dramas filled with good looking people and enough twists and turns to make you dizzy, then Freeform's latest summer offering, Guilt, will be your new obsession. The episode opens with a bang — quite literally — as a young woman by the name of Molly Ryan is murdered during a hazy drunken night of partying with her roommate, both of whom are studying abroad.

Sound familiar? That's probably because Guilt is a thinly veiled adaptation of the Amanda Knox murder case, in which Knox, an American, and her Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were convicted of murdering Knox's study abroad roommate, U.K. native Meredith Kercher, in 2007. To recap you on your sexy murder scandals, Knox was branded an oversexed young murderess capable of the worst crime imaginable in the media, and she and her boyfriend were wrongfully convicted of Kercher's death, ultimately spending four years in prison for a crime they didn't commit.

More: Top things to know about Amanda Knox's engagement

Of course, the Knox story makes for a compelling narrative, so it's not surprising that the show's creators are looking to capitalize on one of the most famous murder trials in the past decade, but so far, it doesn't seem like they're doing anything more than adding cheap dramatic effects to the tune of a too-fast, sloppy plot.

The pilot serves to set the scene for what one can assume is (at least) a full season's worth of episodes, and Guilt's pilot does that... full throttle. There are so many clunky plot twists and turns that you'll end up dizzy at best and with a headache at worst. There's so much going on here (secret sex clubs! Creepy stepfather! Affair with a professor!) that it's a miracle it's not challenging to keep up.

MoreRecovery Road's shocking nightmare sequence proves Freeform isn't for kids

So far, what Guilt has going for it is an exciting story line filled with endless opportunities... if it manages to pace itself appropriately. It definitely packs the punches early on, but seemingly at the expense of a coherent plotline.

More: Freeform gets in on the TBT action with That's So Throwback

Anything that can happen in the pilot does, from Grace, the prime murder suspect, fleeing to Paris and simultaneously blackmailing a professor's wife due to their torrid affair after finding her roommate murdered, to various questions about Grace's innocent pleas and true intentions. And that's just one character, folks. There are numerous other characters thrown in, from Grace's stepfather and sister to the investigators.

It may be hard to keep up, but if you're looking for a show that'll have you sitting on the edge of your sofa, Guilt hits the nail on the head, for lack of a less, erm, violent term.

Did Kathryn Dennis lie about the paternity of her baby on Southern Charm?

More: Southern Charm's Craig was a fool for calling Whitney out

Well, we've arrived at the penultimate episode of this season of Southern Charm, in which Landon discusses her affection for Shep and her inability to get an actual job, Shep and his mom discuss the potential future of HusbandShep and FatherShep, and Thomas organizes a dinner party for his friends so he can yell at them. So soapy, so delightful. The reason television exists, if you ask me. But let's not get too comfortable because, of course, there's misogyny to contend with.

Last week, Patricia threw a party for Thomas to celebrate the birth of his son, and all present decided that it would be awesome for Thomas to get a paternity test, since Kathryn was probably lying about him being the father. Even Craig, who's spent this entire season encouraging everyone to give her another chance and to include her in the group, interviewed that Kathryn had been dating someone when Julien was conceived, and so it's unlikely that he's Thomas' kid. (OK, Craig. Thanks for weighing in.)

More: Enough with slut-shaming Kathryn Dennis, Southern Charm fans

To be clear, it's not Thomas who's calling for this test, it's everyone around him. He's either decided that it doesn't matter or he knows Julien is his. When you're done reading this article, I would recommend taking a trip over to Kathryn's Instagram and looking at this kid. He's Thomas'. Even though he's still a baby and babies are sort of nondescript creatures until a certain point, he looks like Thomas. But also? That isn't the point.

This quest for the paternity test is just another opportunity for everyone on this show to trot out the slut-shaming they've been directing toward Kathryn all season and, for that matter, since she showed up on Southern Charm. Ever since that fateful dinner party in Season 1, when Craig announced that Kathryn had slept with three men at the table, she's been the resident harlot. It's crappy and I'm over it. We've already established that the dudes on this show can sleep with all the ladies in town and they get cookies, but if a woman does it, she's trash.

For reasons I'm not entirely sure of, I'm basically ride or die for Kathryn. I don't think she's lying about paternity. If Kathryn wanted to get away from Thomas, she could have said the dude she was dating was Julien's father and avoided a lot of problems. And we know Kathryn's family has its own high status in Charleston society, so social climbing isn't what she's after. Accusing someone of lying about the father of their baby is serious business; it has long-term repercussions, and I don't just mean the pure bloodline junk, which is what this is really all about in addition to demonizing Kathryn. Can everyone just get a grip, please? It's too late in the season for that to actually happen, but I can dream, right?

Despite getting her in trouble, Teresa Giudice's love for her husband is sweet

It’s been a long few years at the Giudice household, but today we learned that despite any legal troubles, family drama or stays in jail, one thing is for sure: Teresa Giudice will be completely and totally in love with her husband, Joe.

The reality TV star posted a cute photo to her Instagram today to give a short and sweet shoutout to her husband. The photo showed a blend of coffee called “Tall, Dark and Handsome” made by the brand Joe Coffee. She wrote in the caption, “I bought this coffee because I miss my honey Joe.” Giudice has since deleted the image.

More: Teresa Giudice is standing by her man

Whether or not their love for each other always drives them to do the right thing, it’s really sweet to see how deeply in love they are. While she may find it difficult to get others to describe Joe as tall, dark or handsome, that’s the only way she sees him, and that makes their love incredibly sweet.

It’s obvious why Teresa takes any opportunity to lovingly mention her husband. She spent 11 months in jail in 2015 and only got to spend three months at home with Joe before he started his sentence. He’ll be in Federal Correctional Institution in Fort Dix, New Jersey, for 41 months after being convicted of fraud. Basically, you could call them a less dangerous, more tanned version of Bonnie and Clyde.

More: Melissa Gorga talks relationship with Teresa Giudice after prison (VIDEO)

Luckily, Teresa does get to visit Joe. Us Weekly reports that she’s spending this time focusing solely on her career and her four daughters — Gia, 15, Gabriella, 11, Milania, 10, and Audriana, 6. One friend of the family said, “It’s very lonely in the house without Joe there, but since Teresa has just finished filming, she’s back in her element and able to take the girls to all their activities. She’s back in full-on-mom mode."

Being a mother to her daughters is certainly what Teresa does best, but it will be interesting to see whether or not she’ll be able to keep the focus on them once the drama of The Real Housewives of New Jersey starts to ramp up. She’s known for losing her cool on the show, so hopefully with this new perspective on life we’ll all get to see a more loving and responsible side of Teresa.

And we’ll most definitely see more adoring remarks about her husband.

Dr. Drew shamed Jenelle Evans on Teen Mom 2 for the wrong reason

More: Fake Corey Simms Facebook shows how easily breakup rumors can start

On the first part of the Teen Mom 2 reunion, Dr. Drew spoke with Jenelle and Leah (mostly Jenelle, since her segment was super long). During Jenelle's segment, we learned various things: Jenelle's ex-boyfriend Kieffer Delp returned for a one night only appearance, Nathan really needs to get rid of the tiny ponytail he seems very into and Jace's behavioral issues are being addressed with meds, which folks on Twitter have serious feelings about. What we already knew, but which Dr. Drew felt compelled to point out in a manner that definitely qualified as shaming, is that Jenelle has two children with two different fathers.

Really, Dr. Drew? Of all of Jenelle's issues, this is what you're choosing to criticize her for? There are so many to pick from, not to mention the fact that there is no shame in having multiple kids with multiple people. It's one model of a family, and people can make their own decisions as to who fathers their children based on what's best for them. (The dudes who have fathered Jenelle's kids are not the best humans, but that's not the point. She can still have multiple fathers for her kids.) Also, Jenelle is hardly the first teen mom to have more than one kid or to have another kid with a man who didn't father her first kid.

More: Teen Mom Jenelle Evans may be lying to herself about what's best for Jace

Dr. Drew has a really disturbing record of shaming the young moms — for getting pregnant, for getting pregnant again, for deciding they don't want to go through hell to stay with their children's fathers, for making choices about their children, etc. The shaming makes the reunions really uncomfortable to watch and, I would bet, to participate in. It's a good thing they only happen once a season, and in the meantime, I hope the moms on stage, or those watching, aren't internalizing Dr. Drew's problematic messages.

I'm calling it now: Rachel's totally going to end up with Coleman on UnREAL

When Michael Rady was cast in Season 2 of UnREAL, fans knew he was playing a filmmaker named Coleman with the possibility of becoming Rachel's new love interest. Well, that definitely seems to be the case after Monday's episode.

More: UnREAL's Rachel is on a power trip, but Quinn's totally gonna squash that

Before I get to Coleman and Rachel, let's talk about the mess that is Quinn, Chet and Rachel trying to run Everlasting's newest season. After last week's episode in which Quinn and Chet declared war over the show, Rachel's showrunner status was quickly ripped away from her by Quinn. However, Quinn did promise Rachel that as soon as she handled Chet, she would hand it back over to her.

Quinn, UnREAL
Image: Tumblr

As I'm sure many viewers guessed would happen, it's not all going as planned, especially since there is now Team Chet and Team Quinn. Yeah, they're filming two different versions of Everlasting, which is nothing short of the usual crazy. Chet's is more of a wild Everlasting with major Real World vibes, whereas Quinn is sticking to what she knows best.

And Rachel? Well, she's back to producing, but not really loving it. She wants her showrunner title back, but Quinn definitely isn't giving that up anytime soon. So, in what was a major power move by Rachel, she went directly to Gary, the network president. Not only did she reveal how Quinn and Chet are running things, but she planted the seed of why she should be running the show.

More: UnREAL will make you never, ever want to go on The Bachelor

Yeah, she totally stabbed Quinn in the back. That said, she definitely pulled a Quinn-like move, so how angry will Quinn truly be? Well, seeing how all of this led to Gary coming to set and voicing his concerns for the series and giving both Quinn and Chet's job to someone else, I'm going to say Quinn is going to be furious at Rachel, once she finds out what she did.

Yes, you read that right. Gary brought on a new showrunner for the season. That's where Coleman comes into play. Side note: Anyone else cringe when Rachel thought Gary was going to announce her as the new showrunner, but then Coleman entered the room? Yeah, super awkward.

Quinn and Rachel

I applaud Rachel for her attempt at overthrowing Quinn. Also, thanks to her big move, Season 2 just got a whole lot more interesting. I have a feeling there's going to be a lot of drama ahead and even more so between Quinn and Rachel. The filming of Everlasting Season 14 is going to be quite different now that Coleman is in charge and going with Chet's angle. Where does this put Quinn? What will she be doing? And what about Rachel? Is she still a producer? Things are getting turned upside down, and I like it.

Oh, and Rachel and Coleman are totally going to hook up, right? Not only are they both educated and intelligent individuals who know about film-making but there was also a lot chemistry there upon their first meeting. Jeremy and Adam, who? Hello, Coleman.

If Coleman turns out to be a decent guy and possibly "the one" for Rachel, here's hoping it doesn't get screwed up. Though, this is UnREAL we're talking about, so, yeah, it will probably all go downhill at some point in time. I'm sending Rachel all the luck in the world.

UnREAL airs Mondays at 10/9c on Lifetime.

Don't worry, Mariah Carey, none of us looked good in the '90s

Mariah Carey knows that she’s been an icon for more than 20 years. She knows she’s inspired millions with her voice and her songs. Apparently, she also knows that her fashion in the '90s was... less than great.

Recently, the singer was interviewed by PrideSource and they asked her what she thinks “1990 Mariah would think of 2016 Mariah.”

More: Mariah Carey gets fired from her Vegas residency for an unbelievable reason

Carey’s answer was completely honest. She said, "I was such a kid, just in over my head, but I knew that I was gonna do this for my life and so I probably would’ve been like, 'Who does your hair and makeup?' ‘Cause they had me with some people who didn’t know what they were doing, and I knew it wasn’t really good, and I’d just be like, 'Who does your lighting, hair and makeup?'"

She also acknowledged that there were a lot of black outfits, but didn’t say why. When asked about it she said, “It was just like, ‘Ahhh,’ such a long story. You don't even wanna know.”

Two things for Carey. One, now I most certainly do want to know. My hunch is that it had to do with weight, but that may just be my jaded side talking. But two, and more importantly, didn’t we all look terrible in the '90s? I mean, there was a few years when grown men were walking around with ski goggles on their head during the summer when they were nowhere near a mountain.

Looking back on some of her outfit choices, sure, they don’t look great now, but for the time they were great. She rocked her midriff way before everyone else was doing it. And you could probably find a pair of high-waisted mom jeans at your local Urban Outfitters if you went to look for them today. So Carey really doesn’t need to apologize for her style back then.

What I would listen to, however, is an apology for Glitter and the accompanying Glitter-era Carey. When she’s ready for that, I’m all ears.

Big ol' Kellogg recall could send you running for your kids' lunchboxes

Peanut-contaminated flour has struck again, and this time it's taking our cookies. Today Kellogg Company announced a voluntary recall of multiple products for potentially containing undeclared peanut exposure. Kellogg announced the recall after its supplier, Grain Craft, recalled wheat flour that had the potential to contain low levels of peanut residue.

For a full list of affected products, see the FDA's Kellogg recall notice.

Kellogg is just the latest company caught up in the recall web of flour that's possibly contaminated with low levels of peanut residue. A huge baked goods recall has caused Safeway, Jewel, Chick-fil-A, 7-Eleven, Cinnabon, Frito Lay, Hostess and others to yank products off shelves after a batch of peanut-contaminated flour was discovered at the industrial bakery CSM Bakery Solutions.

While you sort through your kitchen pantry for contaminated goods, you might want to include sunflower seeds and foods that contain them to the list of tossable items, since they may be part of the sunflower seed recall for possible listeria contamination. Summer may be the season for sunflower seeds and s'mores, but for now it might be best to hold off or to double-check where your ingredients are coming from.

Don't stop playing hard to get even after you get married (or else!)

Sex is a strange thing and the longer you have been together, the weirder it becomes sometimes. A new study has found that the way we perceive our partner's interest in us actually affects how much sex we have. Apparently men in long term relationships often underperceive their partner's sexual desire and those whose partner's did "underperceive" were overall happier. In other words, keep playing hard to get ladies. It is working.

Researchers believe that men who think their partner's don't want them work harder to make them want them and thus offer more satisfaction. All these research speak kind of reaches back into age-old stereotypes about love and dating, right? Men who are less hot are often better in bed. Why? Because they have to be. And the same can be said about women, according to many men.

More: 7 signs your partner said 'I love you' too soon

As someone in a long term relationship, I can't help but chuckle. After 15 years with the same man, he still makes my heart flutter. Every time I look at him, I salivate. And yet he thinks I don't want him. There is no logic to this. I don't get it. Maybe I don't say it out loud enough. Maybe it's him and his not-so-hot sense of self, but either way, it's a fact.

After reading this, I know I have been right to keep quiet. I may find my husband's broad shoulders and thick arms and cut waist completely irresistable. I want to kiss him and hug him and have sex with him. All the time. But if he knew that, he might be cocky. So maybe it's not such a terrible thing that I keep it to myself. Maybe it makes him a better husband.

He once told me, the best women to marry were the ones who are hot now, but weren't always hot. They are more humble and smarter. Makes sense. If you can't fall back on looks, you fall back on other things. It turns out that old song about ugly women may have had a point.

Just kidding. But really: We should all be working to please our partners. Even if they salivate over our every move. Love is about wanting to make one another happy. And sex makes everyone smile.

Just because I'm Muslim doesn't mean I 'hate' gay people

We've seen a lot of talk this week about the divide between the Muslim and the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities in America. But they're about as alike as they are different.

I should know. I am a Muslim, and I am an activist who works to create space for Muslim stories. Yet, I understand that as I ask people to honor my humanity as a Muslim, I must set an example by honoring the humanity of others. That includes the gay community.

Many in the Muslim community struggle with the idea of same-sex companionships. To be honest, some Muslims struggle when talking about anything sexual at all. Yet, it is also true that compassion, love and mercy are requirements of my faith.

More: Islam didn't kill the Orlando victims — the shooter did

Recently, I was hosting a panel discussion celebrating several LGBT stories in my city based on a podcast series I produce for a local independent newspaper.

Sarah, a teacher at a prestigious private school, approached me at the panel to tell me how she had mentored one of her fifth grade students, a Muslim boy whose mother had told him not to reveal his faith. She shared that the student was living in fear. Sarah consoled the student and his mother. Her efforts ended up empowering the family.

After I thanked her for supporting my community, Sarah then thanked me for supporting hers, revealing that she was a lesbian who is married to her partner. She took my hand and said, "Muslims share so many of the same fears as our community."

She got it.

Neither of us could have imagined that less than 48 hours later, an Afghan-American Muslim would take an assault weapon and mow down members of the Orlando LGBT community during Latin Night at the Pulse nightclub.

More: After Orlando, I’m more afraid than ever to be queer in public

As a Muslim, I understand the constant striving to speak for myself, to be louder than the stereotypes. Still, many Muslims have to gauge just how Muslim we can be in any given circumstance. We never really know how someone may react to our "Muslimness."

My 14-year-old son was once sent to talk to the school principal over a book report on ISIS. The book was hardly suspicious; it was a collection of perspectives from Washington Post journalists.

Meanwhile, I've come to a point where I no longer cover my head. If you see me, I’m just a white woman. My driver’s license features a picture of me in hijab. I once had to show my license to a tow truck operator. He was flirting with me until he realized that I was Muslim. Then, his attitude completely changed.

Many members of the LGBT community experience the same social and cultural dynamics. I have an HIV-positive friend who points out that he has to negotiate how gay he is in new situations, how safe it is for him to reveal his HIV status when he meets new people.

He said that coming out doesn't happen once, but it is a process that happens every day. As I discovered this theme, I nodded my head in agreement.

As a Muslim, I get it.

On Sunday, merely hours after the Orlando shooting, I sat on a different panel with fellow Muslims discussing Islam in America. The moderator pointed out we couldn’t tell the audience why Orlando happened.

We didn't have those kinds of answers.

What we did do — every single Muslim on that panel — was fully come out as supporters of our LGBT brothers and sisters.

One can point fingers at faith or extremist movements. One can argue over language: is it a hate crime or terrorism? That isn't going to get us anywhere. Orlando demonstrates what we've allowed America to become: a place where hate is legislated, and sometimes, armed and dangerous.

More: My gay teen's coming out struggle just got 10 times harder

But Orlando also offers something magical. It gives Muslims — and America — a chance to discover the true colors of our souls.

This moment, this pain, is our moment to reach for beauty.

It's a really good thing Sean Penn wasn't allowed to name his son

If you think Sean Penn and Robin Wright's son Hopper has an unusual name, wait until you hear what his dad really wanted to call him.

More: I'm never going to top the pregnancy prank I pulled on my husband

In an interview with Interview magazine, 22-year-old actor and model Hopper revealed that his name was inspired by actor and filmmaker Dennis Hopper, whom his dad "was friendly with" and "idolized." Also, Wright said said he "hopped in her stomach" instead of kicking. Cute!

However, Hopper wasn't Penn Senior’s first choice of baby name. He wanted to go for something a little more… flavorsome?

Steak Penn has quite a ring to it, but it's perhaps something you'd expect to see written on a restaurant menu rather than a birth certificate.

"My dad wanted to name me Steak, the food, because he loves it so much," said Hopper. "But my mom was never going to go for it."

More: Being a single mom on Father's Day is the pits

If Hopper had been named Steak, he'd join a long line of celebrity babies named after food. Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman have a daughter named Olive. My Chemical Romance guitarist Frank Iero has a daughter named Cherry. Bear Grylls has a son named Huckleberry. General Hospital star Ingo Rademacher has a son named Peanut. Ethan Hawke has a daughter named Clementine. Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin have a daughter named Apple.

But there's something about Steak that sets it apart from all of these. Perhaps it's the fact that it's a thick slice of beef taken from the hindquarters of an animal and then grilled or fried.

Nope, we can’t see this one appearing in the baby name books any time soon.

Someone on the set of The Leftovers is trolling us with Justin Theroux's abs. Theroux is currently filming the show's last season in Austin and apparently, we're going to be missing quite a lot when the HBO series finally goes off the air.

More: Justin Theroux reportedly almost died on his honeymoon

As E! Online reports, series creator Damon Lindelof decided to end the show after the third season in a nod to Tom Perotta's books. "Tom, myself and our incredible team of writers and producers put tremendous care into designing those seasons as novels unto themselves… with beginnings, middles and ends," he said in a statement. "As we finished our most recent season, it became clear to us that the series as a whole was following the same model… and with our beginning and middle complete, the most exciting thing for us as storytellers would be to bring The Leftovers to a definitive end." In a world where HBO is letting Game of Thrones off the rails, we have to respect Lindelof's measured artistic vision.

We trust that Theroux's abs will live on, even when they're not starring in their own HBO show.

6 oral sex techniques that deserve some kind of medal

There's an old Esquire survey that keeps making its rounds on the Internet. Initially published in 2010 and still buzzing about in 2016, The Esquire Survey of the American Woman asks plenty of revealing questions -- like how much women earn, if they'd ever consider plastic surgery and if they liked receiving oral sex.

You can probably guess that the last question went over like a lead balloon. While oral sex sounds like a great appetizer to the main event in theory, 10 percent of women said they didn't like it at all. And a whopping 44 percent of women said it could be "nice" every once in a while. What gives? Well, you know, and we know, that many aren't as proficient as they claim to be in the ways of the tongue beneath the sheets. And many of us women are shy about asking for what we want in bed, making even the best attempt at oral very awkward indeed.

More: The sex toy so good, I almost passed out the first time I used it

Believe it or not, these tips, coupled with some expert guidance, can help make receiving oral fun again. As you might have guessed, it's all about finding out what works for you and what doesn't — and getting comfortable using your sexy bedroom voice to direct traffic:

The most important thing a partner can do is ASK a woman what she likes. Many are too afraid to ask their partners what they like because they don't want to come off sounding inexperienced. Well, you're going to come off as inexperienced anyway if you try performing oral sex without first asking about their preferences. The proof is in the pudding, folks.

More: Lessons learned from 31 days straight of orgasms

Don't jump onto her vagina or clitoris right away. First, warm her up by teasing her all over. Start out kissing her mouth and then kiss her cheeks and neck. Work your way down her body. Caress her with your hands. Try to make the experience as sensual as possible. Oral sex is more than just going down on her.

Take things slow. Don't act like a hungry, slobbery brute. Once you make it to her clit and vagina, gently lick all around. Direct stimulation can be too intense for some, so explore the surrounding area. Ask her where she likes to be touched. You don't have to be rough with your mouth unless she wants you to. It's always best to start off slow, unless she specifically requests otherwise. Some women do like it when you roughly use your tongue and mouth, but only do so if she asks.

Next Up: Try the reverse hug technique

{pageBreak}

Try the reverse hug technique. This shouldn't be too hard if you're in good shape. You'll need to hold her upside down in front of you. Her head and shoulders should rest on the bed, and her back should rest against your chest and stomach. Hold her up a bit so that she won't feel too much pressure around her neck. Just wrap your arms around her stomach and lower your face between her legs.

Try the doggy greet technique. This technique involves a combination of oral sex and doggystyle. While in the doggystyle position, pull out of her when she is close to having an orgasm. Then, you hurry and lower your head towards her clit and use your tongue until she has orgasm. Once she has the orgasm, enter her again. Basically, you go back and forth between using your tongue and penis. If done right, she should have multiple orgasms!

More: Revenge sex is said to bring closure but sexperts have a better way

Another fun oral position to try is "under the sink". She stands right next to the side of the bed and squats down a little. There should just be enough room for you to lay on your back on the bed and place your head between her legs. She is mostly in control of her own pleasure. She can squat further, tilt, lean back, etc. This position is pretty easy for you both to do. She just needs to give you enough room so that you don't strain your neck.

These are just a few examples of the many oral sex techniques and positions you and your partner can try. As long as you are willing to experiment and try new things, you should be able to have a very strong orgasm.
