Hillary Clinton running for president is the best thing for my sons

I was interviewed at a Hillary Clinton rally. The interviewer was dressed in a freshly pressed suit and clearly had been following her campaign for some time. He looked worn down and a bit tired despite the freshly pressed suit. I am sure he had interviewed hundreds of supporters before me and will probably interview hundreds more as the campaign wears on. He seemed most interested in why I chose to bring my two 4-year-old boys to such an event. It was an evening event in Northern Liberties, Philadelphia.

They were serving beer and finger foods within the walls of The Filmore — not typically a place for hyper 4-year-old boys. In fact, he wasn’t the only one to question my questionable parenting. Fellow supporters wondered about my decision as well. They wondered out loud what my boys were getting from this event. They offered babysitting advice and commiserated with me about being a single parent.

More: I pulled my kid out of school when Bernie Sanders came to town

I am not a single parent. I am happily married to a wonderfully supportive man. Had he not had to work, he would have been with me, supporting Hillary Clinton.

Although I never appreciate unsolicited advice from strangers, I am pretty used to it. What I found strange about this advice was the lack of understanding that I am raising my boys to admire and respect strong, powerful women. Isn’t that the reason we were all there chanting Hillary? Isn’t that one of the reasons millions of people around the country flock to her events? She is making history. A history long overdue. Why shouldn’t I expose my sons’ to history in the making? Even if she isn’t the eventual president, we are watching history unfold.

There were plenty of little girls there. There were plenty of mothers beaming with pride watching their daughters chant for someone who could be the first woman president. There were infants strapped to the chests of new parents, bouncing to the beat of Katy Perry’s Roar.

There weren’t any other little boys. There were few older boys. There were just mine (and maybe one or two tween boys) chanting Hillary. Is it only important for little girls to see strong and powerful women? I certainly don’t think so. Shouldn’t both boys and girls have strong men and women role models? Why would we deny our sons a role model just based on his or her gender? When I am sitting in a rocker, old and gray, I want to know that I raised my sons to respect and admire people not based upon their gender, but upon their accomplishments.

More: How to tell if you're a crappy mom in one easy step

For years, mothers and fathers have been teaching their little boys to idolize Iron Man, Superman, and Spiderman, creating an unattainable image of what a man should be. And where has that gotten us as a society? It’s created the misogynistic world we live in today. I want my sons to see the problems with the world, not as a male or a female, black or white, but rather, human problems. Human problems they can help solve or, at the very least, listen to others discuss. In order to make meaningful change in this world, we need to change how we are raising our sons. We need to stop giving them passes like, "boys will be boys" and start holding them accountable for their actions.

Not only was I exposing them to a strong, history-making woman but I was also exposing them to two thousand people from different backgrounds and communities. There was a diversity within the crowd that I could never match in my small New Jersey town. Young, old, black, Asian, LGBT, rich and poor were all there chanting along with my kids. Seeing and talking with so many people that were different from themselves provides my boys with a larger view of the world. A more tolerant view. I take my job as a parent very seriously. I am raising the future generation. I feel the best way to combat the Trump way of thinking is to raise my children to hold themselves to a higher standard, and I want them to hold their generation to a higher standard.

I want my children to understand the history of our country. The good, the bad and the ugly. The best way to teach them is to show them how we can change the bad, rid ourselves of the ugly and celebrate the good. I want them to be great, but not at the cost of others. I want them to be successful, but not feel a sense of superiority. When they are on the playground, I want them to stand up to the bullies and help the victims. When they are at the board meeting, I want them to stand up and call out the injustices they see. I want them to see the problem, not be the problem. I want them to hear the marginalized communities and be their allies. I want them to ask questions and listen to the answers. The only way I am going to properly teach them is to show them.

More: This mom's letter is going viral for all the wrong reasons

I can talk about why something isn’t right or how to change the things I don’t like in this world, but my boys are watching me. They are learning from my example. If I pick up trash in a parking lot and put it in the trash can, so will they. If I stand cheering for a woman, so will they. If I show them how I am trying to change the world, they will.

When that reporter asked why I brought them, I told him just this: There is no better way to show strength than to be strong. There is no easier way to teach equality than to support it. There is no better way to be proud than to celebrate it.

18 ideas — from big to small — that kids can get Dad for Father's Day

Sometimes, we can give them a little nudge and let the little DIY-ers take it from there, sometimes they want to dig deep into their own piggy banks but just need a little guidance as to where to look and yes, sometimes, they need your help pointing them in the direction of something Daddy will truly love (and they just may need a little of your funds too).

To help you nail down all three categories, I've put together a few suggestions that just might help you get started.

For those little ones who are deeply entrenched in the just-let-me-do-it stage and wanting desperately to feel as though they have taken ownership of the gift-giving, go for the uber-personalized:

1. Take pictures of tasks your kiddos are willing to do for dad — empty the dishwasher, walk the dog, play catch... and create a coupon book.

Image: Danielle Smith/SheKnows

Image: Danielle Smith/SheKnows

2. Personalize a memento of significance. In our home, that's easy — a baseball. The kids have a wonderful time creating and Dad loves the 'special' creation.

Image: Danielle Smith/SheKnows

3. Spend an afternoon sorting through the past year's best photos and create a 'highlight reel' of the most special moments — all the while, asking the kiddos to help you create the collage.

Image: Danielle Smith/SheKnows

4. Take your small people to a local craft shop and allow them to get 'hands-on' — creating anything that reminds them of Dad — why did my small dude choose a penguin? No clue, but he was adamant (he selected it all on his own, painted it and gave it with a full heart).

Image: Danielle Smith/SheKnows

If you and the kiddos are looking for additional inspiration, I've broken the Father's Day Ideas down into two additional categories: Gifts the kiddos can tackle with their piggy banks and a few that will need a little help from mom.

More small gifts that kids can get for Dad

Even if you decide to skip the full DIY route, it is fun to combine the wishes of the man of the house with some extra love and thought too. Here are some options that fall into the 'Dad-I-dug-into-my-very-own-pockets-to-get-you-something-I-just-know-you-will-love' category:

Image: Danielle Smith/SheKnows

  1. Give Dad the kickstart he needs to his morning with the perfect mug — one that lets him know you recognize that being a dad is all kinds of special.
  2. A sweet book of 50 prompts that celebrates his extraordinary gifts — the ones that are uniquely him... from his advice to his dashing good looks — and the kids fill it in. A keepsake Dad will definitely treasure.
  3. If ever Dad wonders if he is a superhero in the eyes of his kids, he will look no further than his wrists. These superhero cufflinks will remind him daily that the kiddos think he's better than Captain America.
  4. Mom isn't the only champion of the kitchen — a cookbook of his very own will allow dad to master this domain.
  5. A sweet and simple shaving set will spoil dad — keeping him dapper at home or on the road as it is portable enough to take when he travels.
  6. A customizable notebook or address book will keep dad smiling as he's perfectly organized and reminded of the people who love him most.

And now on to granting a few of those extra big wishes... Let's be honest, sometimes we just need a little bit of mom's help figuring out just what dad really wants (and some help in the funding department never hurts either).

Big gifts kids can get for Dad (with a little help)

Image: Danielle Smith/SheKnows

  1. First on the list is that ever popular Fitbit Flex. A perfect option for any dad keeping track of his fitness level — whether he's up early in the morning to get a workout in before the start of his day, or he wants to track all that time spent on the field coaching the kids.
  2. Let's be honest, men love a great fitting pair of jeans just as much as women do... in fact, give a man a pair of jeans that fits his style, his comfort, his life, and he's sold for good. It makes sense to go with the brand that invented the blue jean and continues to reinvent the style to match lifestyle needs, right? Think about Levi's® 505™ jeans for Dad. These jeans are now on sale for $36.99 at JCPenney - a price that won't break the piggy bank!
  3. Every single day, we're on the hunt for a lost item — like keys... so Tile, a tiny bluetooth tracker that you attach to the everyday items that Dad is in danger of losing (like keys), is an ideal gift.
  4. A sentimental option for the Dad who wants to remember the city he's from, that place you met, the last football game he watched with his dad, this keychain preserves a map clipping of a cherished location.
  5. The Amazon Echo is life changing. As close as we've come to living like the Jetsons, the Echo, a hands-free speaker you control with your voice, has the ability to play music, provide news, sports scores, the weather and answer an incredible variety of questions. Dad will love it.
  6. Dad can tune in to the game, his favorite movie or block out the sound of the kids fighting simply by turning on his new Beats Solo2 wireless headphones. And if he travels, he'll hear the music or movie of his choice over the sounds of the plane.
  7. For the grilling dad, a personalized cutting board to transport his favorite creations. Mom won't even get in the way of his time at the grill.
  8. The little boy baseball fanatic in your dad will tear up as he opens this Major League Baseball map and mentally tallies the fields he's visited with his own father, with friends and the ones he plans to visit with his kids. The map has colored pins for those already seen and those yet to be.

Whew... now that is a list! I'm excited to know what you decide to do for the dad in your world. I know my small people are giddy about making plans. Sending Happy Father's Day wishes to the special dads you know.

We hope Richard Simmons is OK after reports of paramedics at his house

We've all been missing Richard Simmons during his disappearance from the public eye over the past few years, and now there's finally some news on his activities — but it's not good.

The Los Angeles Fire Department told ET that it responded to a 911 call at Simmons' Hollywood Hills mansion just before midnight on Friday, taking one person to the hospital, though the fire department won't confirm whether the person was Simmons. But according to TMZ's sources, the fitness guru was acting in "an unusually strange manner," prompting the 911 call from someone in his home. Simmons was reportedly hospitalized and moved to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

For those of us who've connected with the fitness legend's exuberant teaching style, found inspiration in his brave and refreshingly colorful fashion sense or simply appreciated him for the quirky, passionate on-camera personality that he once was, this news is hard to take.

Many are worried about Simmons, who in his 60s has become quite a shut-in, refusing to see his old friends. A New York Daily News article even entertained the notion that the fitness star's housekeeper might be holding Simmons captive — Simmons told ET the article was "very hurtful," insisting in a March interview that the worry was misplaced: "No one should be worried about me," he said in the phone interview with ET. "The people that surround me are wonderful people who take great care of me." He also stressed that if he was in trouble, he would reach out.

Simmons did admit that he'd been having "a tough time" in a Facebook post following an injury in 2014: “I am so touched by the outpouring of love and concern I have received today," he wrote. "I have had a tough time dealing with this injury, as it is keeping me from doing what I truly love to do and that is to teach classes around the world. Make sure you keep Sweatin’!” And while we all may miss getting sweaty with Richard Simmons, the important thing here is that he gets better.

Some fans are commenting on social media about the fact that Simmons' Facebook page and Twitter account have been updated over the weekend with posts suggesting that everything's normal, and they wonder if there's any truth to accusations that people close to Simmons are controlling him. However, while the posts are a bit odd, we also shouldn't dismiss the possibility that Simmons, or someone close to him, is writing positive things on social media in an attempt to keep his personal issues private and fans from worrying.

Fans wondering what they can do to help Simmons could stop lamenting that the fitness guru isn't returning to his youthful ways. Surely, if he were depressed, as many speculate, dealing with people demanding to know why he wasn't strapping on a tutu and jumping around like his old self would probably be the last thing he'd need. People do change as they age — even in Hollywood.

Simmons insisted in his March interview with ET that he was living his life how he needed to: "This is how I want to live my life right now," he said. It's conceivable that after a lifetime spent inspiring others, Simmons might actually just need to take some time to himself — though you can't blame people for worrying, given the news this weekend. "I just want everyone to know that I love them very much, but it is time right now for Richard Simmons to take care of Richard Simmons," he told ET.

We certainly hope that's what he's doing now.

My husband and I are new parents, so for this article (and secretly to help me pick out a gift), I asked hubs to weigh in on awesome Father’s Day presents for new dads. From next-level framed photos to the perfect fitting Levi’s®, here are nine Father’s Day gifts for every kind of new dad in your life.

1. The Socialite New Dad

Image: Artifact Uprising

This gift is for the new papa who frequents Instagram, Facebook or Snapchat posting cute pics of his li'l one. Grab your favorite snaps, and create an Instagram photo book. Artifact Uprising offers the most beautiful square-shaped photo books.

2. The Documenter New Dad

Image: GoPro

With a GoPro, the new dad in your life will have so much fun documenting adventures with his li'l one. The Hero4 Session is the smallest, lightest and most convenient of the GoPro cameras — features a busy new dad might appreciate.

3. The Stylish (or Not So Stylish) New Dad

Image: Levi's®

Get the new dad out of those dad jeans and into some stylish trousers. These Levi’s® 505™ jeans, available at JCPenney, are a happy medium between the skinny jean and its loose-fitting counterpart. I like this gift idea because it's something you know the new dad will actually use — I don’t know many peeps who don’t wear jeans. With the Father’s Day sale price of $36.99, it’s a total win.

4. The "Don’t Get Me Anything" New Dad

Image: PunkPost

When all else fails and the pocketbook is empty, you can’t go wrong with a handwritten card. Punkpost allows you to send one as quickly as you can send a text. With the app, you choose your card and what you want to say, and they will write it and drop it off at the post office for you. Pretty sweet, huh?!

5. The Mountain-Man New Dad

Image: Kelty

Going to the gym doesn’t happen most days for new fathers. Rather, finding ways to exercise with the baby is often more feasible. My newbie-dad husband loves to hike with our son. This Kelty Pathfinder 3.0 Kid Carrier makes hiking with a little one safe and comfortable. My husband, whom I call the Mountain Man, has one for our li'l man and loves it.

 6. The Sentimental First-Time Dad

Image: Framebridge

Rather than the typical 4x6 photo, give Dad a next-level framed photo of the new babe and him. Framebridge is my go-to for custom framing, because they make it so easy. Choose your frame, upload your photo or artwork, and receive it in the mail. I used it for some frames in our nursery, and the quality is amazing.

7. The Googler New Dad

Image: Amazon

For the techie papa who googles everything, the Amazon Echo is just the thing. The busy new father in your life won’t even need to get his computer out to get the answers he wants. Instead, he can just station the Amazon Echo in the kitchen and ask Alexa whatever his Googling heart desires.

8. The Overwhelmed New Dad

Image: Fort Standard

The inundated new father might appreciate this supersleek bottle opener by Fort Standard. Its unique shape is matched only by its important function.

9. The Caretaker New Dad

Image: Target

Not only do first-time mamas put themselves last, new papas often prioritize everyone over themselves. Sometimes they just need to put some headphones on and take time out for themselves. Beats by Dre should help.

7. Under Armour Storm Contain II

We're rolling up on summer, and dads are working to get rid of their winter muffin top or dad bods, just like us mommas. Encourage them with this versatile bag with straps that convert it from a duffle bag to a backpack. ($69)

8. LG G Watch

This gorgeous and stylish smartwatch will get a lot of use from tech savvy dads. Not only will he be able to answer calls, operate his playlist and track his steps with it, he'll look sexy while doing it. ($84)

9. Kingsford 24" Charcoal Grill

8 creative Father’s Day gifts for the hard-to-shop-for dad

$

It’s not because men are overly picky or snobbish when it comes to gift expectations. It’s because they literally provide no input! Whenever I ask my husband what he wants for Father’s Day, he tells me that he has everything he wants and he really just wants to be with his kids on his special day. Humph, the nerve!

So, this year, I thought I'd get a jump-start on the whole process and do a little shopping for the masses. If you're in my boat (and trust me, there is plenty of room here), take a look at my selections below. I opted for a variety of items to surprise and delight any man in your life.

1. Carnivore Club

Image: Carnivore Club

The Carnivore Club curates the best artisanal meats from around the world and delivers it right to your door. No, really. If salami and pancetta are something you typically talk about with your foodie, this is the everything gift. Drop mic — you win. Each month’s box is themed around one particular style of cured meats. Examples of past boxes include French charcuterie, Italian salumi, Spanish chorizo, South African biltong and artisanal jerky.

2. Ballpark Blueprint

Image: Uncommon Goods

Sports fans will appreciate a little piece of history added to their man cave. I love how this gift is very dad appropriate, but it still has an aesthetic appeal that any woman would love. It looks like art… but it’s about sports. It’s possible to exist in both worlds. Amazing! Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, Camden Yards – you name the field, and you'll find it. Just make sure you pick the right team before ordering.

3. Beard Pack

Image: Uncommon Goods

Hipster dads will appreciate the all-natural Beard Pack. Listen, if your man has to have facial hair, he might as well have the goods to properly take care of it. I love this full kit because it includes a wash, an oil and a mustache wax. You can’t leave out the mustache!

4. iGrill

Image: Amazon

We all know dads love to BBQ. Well, now there’s the iGrill bluetooth thermometer, a new tool to help make that job a little easier. Using its four-probe capability, the man in your life can easily track more than one temperature at once! I like my meat well done, and my husband is a medium-rare kind of guy. This is life changing, what I like to call the gift that keeps on giving.

5. Levi's® 505™ Jeans

Image: JCP

For a go-to look your man will love over and over again, consider Levi's® 505™ Regular Fit jeans. These pants will take him from the day to night — completely versatile, functional and stylish. I am speaking their language… I know. My husband actually owns a few pairs, and he always comments on the fit.

Guys are concerned about style, of course, but if it doesn’t fit right, it’s not even worth talking about. Levi’s® jeans provide it all. These classic jeans are available at JCPenney in several colors for just $36.99. I suggest a dark and a light so he has some options to impress the ladies. Just kidding.

6. Fitbit Blaze

Image: JCP

Fitbits are all the craze in my house. Four out of the five people in my family own one, and we all run around our kitchen island like maniacs after dinner, when the competition gets heated. The newest version — the Fitbit Blaze — is the top of the line, with not only heart rate monitoring and onscreen workouts but the ability to access text messages, calendar alerts and music files. See you at the finish line!

7. Luma

Image: Luma

Is Dad looking for a way to protect his family with added online security? Perhaps he wants a kill switch for the Internet when the kids have all had too much screen time? Maybe in his dream of dreams, Dad wants built-in hacker protection. Now, the Luma Surround Wi-Fi Router ensures the family’s network will run at full speed at all times. It’s a total lifesaver! How did we digitally live before this???

8. Toolkit Organizer

Image: Home Depot

I have a confession. I asked my husband for a little hint for the last item on my list. It’s not that I was stumped, but I wanted to be sure I was hitting every type of man while creating this guide. He immediately told me I left out a reference to men who liked to build things. The one item that he’s currently pining for is a toolkit organizer for the garage. I had no idea! I found this stylish number on the Home Depot website, and now we all know what Bill’s getting for Father’s Day — nice and easy.

What are some of your gift ideas for Father’s Day? Would love to hear your thoughts!

ARIES (March 19 - April 18)
Image: SheKnows

You thought a loved one was doing well money-wise but you'll discover that the opposite is true on June 9. Not only has he been unable to keep up with debts but he may be close to defaulting on them altogether. Usually this wouldn't impact you except that it looks like you lent him money or co-signed on a loan or lease. Obviously you can't leave him hanging which means that you'll need to do some serious number crunching while hammering out a new financial strategy. Things should work out by July 16 but it will be touch-and-go a couple of times till then.

TAURUS (April 19 - May 19)

What do you do when you suddenly realize that an agreement is no good? You put on a good face and soldier on. It appears as if the person you originally negotiated with has passed on your contract to someone else. Maybe he was hired away, left his job or has been replaced. In any case you're still bound by this pledge and now find yourself saddled with someone who either doesn't like you or lacks imagination. It won't be easy making a go of things, but if you do your best you may wind up turning around this situation and coming out ahead.

You need to get a handle on your tendency to be contrary for contrary's sake because it really is stirring the pot and making a lot of trouble for you. Venus in Gemini makes you someone that people value and cherish and want to know better. This explains all of the unsolicited attention that you've been receiving lately. Nobody is trying to butter you up or lead you astray. They really do like you. Moreover, the Venus cazimi on June 6 will dramatically intensify things between you and a certain someone. This is not the time to retreat. If anything you'll want to do the opposite.

CANCER (June 20 - July 21)

It looks like you'll be inheriting somebody else's mess on June 12. This is when a sibling defaults on a family responsibility, a coworker walks out on a project or a neighbor asks you to take his dog and/or cat because pets aren't allowed where she's moving. It's a pain-in-the-derriere but you'll step up to the plate because you always do. You were born under one of the two designated adult signs of the zodiac. Yet what starts out as thankless will grow to become one of the best things to happen in a long time. It reintroduces you to your leadership, creativity and resourcefulness.

Everyone says you look great! And you do thanks to Venus being cazimi this week. When Venus is cazimi — which means “at the heart of the sun” — she magnifies your powers of attraction making you the person everyone wants to meet and greet. Unfortunately, Venus's influence doesn't extend to your family life, which is in emotional shambles. This won't last forever but it's causing you sleepless nights. Thank heavens you were born under Leo, astrology's most gifted performer. If anyone can carry off the appearance of being light and breezy without anyone suspecting otherwise — it's you. Meanwhile life at home improves in late June.

On June 6 the sun conjoins Venus at the peak of your solar horoscope. This is incredibly fortuitous and you will reap the benefits right away. You could make a big splash, score that prize or experience an extraordinary breakthrough. It's like being crowned the queen of the beauty pageant. And in typical Virgo fashion, you'll want to pass back that tiara and bouquet of roses because you just don't feel like you've earned it. Do yourself a favor: Say nothing and accept graciously. These occasions are few and far between and you don't want to let your humility become your stumbling block.

Your life will be transformed dramatically this week. These changes won't be from out of left field. If anything, you've been anticipating them for weeks but there was always some last minute wrinkle that introduced a complication or pushed back a deadline. In any case, it looks like things will come together under the auspices of the Venus/Uranus sextile on June 12. This is when you'll be handed that bill of sale, contract or keys to the kingdom, so to speak. It will be nice to know that you are finally coming into your own after having felt at loose ends for so long.

Work hasn't been easy. You've felt like a square peg forced into a round hole for months and it hasn't gotten better. Either you're accused of being too exacting and micromanaging or you're seen as aloof and condescending. Sometimes it feels like you can't win no matter what. Thankfully the Venus/Uranus sextile on June 12 will shine some light on the matter. Co-workers actually look up to you but because everything rides on your shoulders they feel shut out from the close collaboration that makes things creative. Learn to delegate responsibility and to include them in your process and the atmosphere will improve immediately.

This won't sit well with you because you don't like being questioned — much less second-guessed. Nevertheless, there is a message here and it has to do with the way you listen. You may hear the words, but not the question itself. Take time to respond to what's being asked of you. Rev. Run saved this week's Food Network Star from repeating the same mistakes

$

After a largely drama-free, boring season premiere, Food Network Star brought us a more exciting episode this week. It began with a team exercise that transitioned into teammates competing directly with one another and ended in a double elimination.

While hosts Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentiis were so consistently in agreement that last week's episode lacked any kind of tension, this week, the presence of Rev. Run kept me engaged. In the most basic sense, it was exciting to see a hip-hop legend grace the show with an unexpected cameo. He also had an important role in deciding the dishes each pair of contestants would make, choosing unusual combinations like fried chicken and sushi and asking groups of two contestants who had worked together earlier in the episode to work against one another. What's more, Rev Run brought in his "hip-hop family" — a group of his friends and colleagues — to taste the food that the contestants made.

Rev. Run
Image: Giphy

After creating their dishes, the contestants had a few seconds to introduce themselves and their food and to entice the testers to choose their dish.

Throughout this process, Flay and De Laurentiis largely took the back seat. Everyone was excited to see Rev. Run on the show, and the crowd that the contestants had to please consisted of his friends. I still wish I could have seen more deliberation and drama from the judges, especially when deciding which contestants would go home in this week's dramatic double elimination. We have not yet gone behind the scenes or peeked into the judges' minds or processes. Essentially, we the viewers access Food Network Star as if we are contestants. It would also be exciting to have information on the process that contestants do not have, however.

Rev. Run 2
Image: Giphy

Still, I was glad that Rev. Run's presence gave the show a new structure. Before I saw this week's episode of Food Network Star, I had no idea that Rev. Run had his own cooking show. However, Rev. Run's Sunday Suppers, which airs on the Cooking Channel, was met with mixed reviews. Many people critiqued it for being boring, lacking humor, teaching very few important cooking skills and, essentially, for existing solely because of Rev. Run's celebrity status. Still, as someone who knows Rev. Run primarily as one of the founding members of Run-D.M.C., the quality of his own show or his talents as a chef were largely irrelevant for me. I was just excited to see him on TV and to see what his opinions of the contestants' meals would be. Maybe this means that I am one of those "blind" consumers easily won over by star power, or maybe it means that Rev. Run has proved himself so undeniably in the realm of hip-hop that his cultural significance transcends necessary technical skill as a cook.

Whatever the case, I can say confidently that I hope that Food Network Star continues with its new structure and introduces more celebrity stars and highly consumable drama as the season continues.

Amber Heard is suing the man who accused her of blackmailing Johnny Depp

When news broke that Amber Heard was a granted a temporary restraining order against Johnny Depp for alleged domestic abuse, comedian Doug Stanhope took it upon himself to write an op-ed for The Wrap accusing Heard of blackmailing Depp and lying about being abused.

More: Oh boy, Johnny Depp's friend claims Depp was "manipulated" by Amber Heard

Now, Heard is taking a stand against Stanhope's allegations and suing the comedian. Court filings also reveal some scary new details about the alleged abuse Heard claims to have experienced while married to Depp.

In the court filings, Heard called Stanhope's article "completely false and defamatory" and said that it caused her "tremendous harm."

The court filings also claim that Stanhope "orchestrated a plot to write an article, which was published at TheWrap.com, which falsely accuses plaintiff Amber Heard of 'blackmail' and other criminal behavior towards her husband, Johnny Depp, from whom she is seeking a divorce."

Heard's lawyer, Charles J. Harder, told People magazine that if Heard is awarded money from the lawsuit, she plans to donate it to a domestic violence charity in Arizona.

"The Complaint alleges that Stanhope is a close friend of Johnny Depp and, as part of a coordinated effort, wrote a highly defamatory article about Ms. Heard, filled with completely false, highly defamatory and very hurtful statements," Harder said in his statement to People. "Ms. Heard seeks the maximum possible jury award."

The court filings also reveal additional details about the alleged abuse, including an alleged incident where Depp nearly suffocated Heard.

"Depp has hit and kicked Heard on numerous occasions, has thrown objects at her, at one point suffocated her to the point where she feared for her life," the court documents claim.

Heard also claims in the documents that Depp is "an alcoholic and drug addict," alleging that many of the attacks occurred while he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Depp's attorney, Laura Wasser, claims that Heard "is attempting to secure a premature financial resolution by alleging abuse."

Infertility depression wouldn't let me care for myself, so my dog stepped in

$

I got married straight out of college at age 22. My husband and I decided to wait on starting a family to enjoy our time together. After our second anniversary, we decided we were ready to have kids. Little did I know that it would take another eight years for that to happen.

Like any couple ready to start a family, we figured it would take a couple of months. No one in our family had any infertility issues. After two years of trying, I saw a specialist. They couldn’t really pinpoint anything physically wrong with me. They just told me I was young and sometimes these things just take time.

I was also having painful menstrual cycles. Again, doctors couldn’t pinpoint why. I was just told to wait and give it time. Dealing with the pain was tough, but the worst part was the question everyone kept asking: “When are you guys going to have kids?” Fast-forward two years later: I still wasn’t pregnant and was in a deep depression.

More: My cats help me manage my anxiety, and I love them for it

My husband and I decided to buy a house after living in apartments for four years. It was a cute little townhouse with three bedrooms (just in case we had kids). The house seemed lonely with just the two of us, so we decided to adopt a dog. We both grew up with dogs and loved having them, but hadn’t been in a position to get one until then.

Our dog search took us to a farm in rural Minnesota. One of the farm’s Blue Heelers had a litter of mixed-breed pups that the farmer wasn’t interested in keeping. When we walked into the puppy pen, our feet were attacked by puffs of fur and teeth. The litter of six pups was an array of brindle, merle and black fur and they were all as cute as can be. One pup sat by itself in the corner of the pen, watching us intently. He was all black with a patch of white on his chest. The farmer informed us that the pup was the runt of the litter and the only male. I walked up to him and he looked at me with big eyes and put his paw on my leg. It was a done deal — he was the one.

Scout was a great puppy. We were able to housebreak him in a month and only had a few incidents of puppy destruction. I got up early every morning to walk him before and after work and took him on weekend adventures. He filled the void that caused my depression. A lot of people say their pets are their like their children, but Scout really was my child. I didn’t dress him up or carry him like a baby, but taking care of him helped distract me from my infertility troubles. My depression killed my motivation to be active. Scout forced me to be active — he needed to be exercised and it helped my depression. As the years passed, and with Scout's constant support, I worked on my depression and tried my best to let it go. I tried to keep my focus on enjoying each day with my dog and husband.

More: I'm spending thousands to keep my dog alive, and I wouldn't change a thing

After seven years of infertility, I finally got the answer to my fertility problem — endometriosis. It was the cause of all those years of painful menstrual cycles. The disease had also damaged both of my ovaries. I underwent surgery to repair some of the damage, but the doctor was only able to salvage half of one ovary. At that point, I knew my chances of having a child were very slim, but I was OK with that. After all, it had been seven years and we could always adopt.

As I recovered from my surgery, Scout, my ever-loving dog, was my constant companion. He reminded me that just like during my depression, he was by side and this pain would soon pass, too. When I started to feel depressed, he’d throw a chewed-up toy on my lap and urge me to play. That’s the wonderful thing about dogs: they live in the moment. They don’t worry about the past or what will happen tomorrow. You need to worry about right now. Life’s too short to sulk. Pick up a ball and throw it — live for the moment.

I followed Scout’s advice and just played. A few months later I got an unexpected surprise: I was pregnant. My baby was due shortly after my 10-year wedding anniversary. I had a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. When I brought him home, Scout stood guard in his room. He instinctively knew that the baby was a part of me and part of his family. He even stopped sleeping in my bedroom; instead, he slept in the baby’s room.

Scout lived to be 14. When he passed, part of my heart went with him. I felt like I'd lost my firstborn. For many years, he was the child I never had. Always loyal, loving and by my side. As he grew older, I mentally prepped myself for his loss. Emotionally, I knew I would be a mess. When he crossed over to the rainbow bridge, my depression crept back in. True, I had my kids to keep me busy, but his death broke my heart.

Instead of crying all day (which I did some days), I decided to follow Scout’s example — pick up a ball. However, I had no fur baby to retrieve it. I knew that no dog would ever replace him, but I could help another. I got involved in animal rescue and I help save homeless dogs in his honor — Scout, my loving son who taught me to take it one day at a time. To get off my butt and walk it off when I was feeling bad. To play, every day, like there’s no tomorrow.

Ahhh, a personal favorite. I've been known to drive an hour (much more often than once) to satisfy my Sprinkles craving. Sprinkles is what started it all — it's the world's first cupcake-only bakery and opened its first store in April of 2005 in Beverly Hills, California. Sprinkles currently has 19 locations nationwide, a Cupcake ATM dispensing cupcakes 24/7, a "Sprinklesmobile" used for catering, and the shop opened a Sprinkles Ice Cream store in 2012. (And a Sprinkles at Disney Springs Orlando is in the works!) Sprinkles founder Candace Nelson is also a judge on the Food Network's Cupcake Wars. Speaking from personal experience, this sophisticated cupcake truly melts in your mouth and will leave you begging for more.

Kyra's Bake Shop specializes in gluten-free cupcakes, and with so many people choosing a gluten-free diet, we had to choose a cupcake shop that meets those needs. Formerly known as Crave, Kyra's Bake Shop is located in Oregon but ships nationwide. Founded by Kyra Bussanich, who's been gluten-free for years, her goal was to not accept living a life without pastries. She experimented with dozens of gluten-free flours and finally found one that tastes better and lighter than in traditional cupcakes. This means you can enjoy more in one sitting without feeling sick! Flavors range from Mocha Latte to Snickerdoodle to Peanut Butter and Jelly. Even more impressive, Kyra now holds the title as the only four-time winner of Cupcake Wars.

6. Gigi’s Cupcakes

According to founder Gigi Butler, who was seen on CBS’s Undercover Boss, her cupcake shop was born in 2007 after her brother stood waiting in line for two hours to eat a famous cupcake in New York City. Gigi’s brother insisted her cupcakes were better — and worth the wait — so she decided to open her own cupcakery in Nashville with almost no money to her name. Fortunately Gigi’s Cupcakes took off and has since been franchised, with more than 100 locations in 23 states and counting. Gigi’s Cupcakes, baked fresh daily, come in addictive flavors like Raspberry Buckle, gluten-free Strawberries & Cream and Kentucky Bourbon and are available for order online. Garlic butter sauce

Making a garlic butter sauce is super simple. All you need to do is melt 1/3 cup of butter, add in 2 crushed garlic cloves with a sprinkle of dried oregano, and you can toss your grilled shrimp right in the mixture.

Ginger-soy sauce

If you want to go more Asian for dinner, then make this dipping sauce. In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup of soy sauce, 1/4 cup of sesame oil, 2 tablespoons of rice wine vinegar, 2 tablespoons of sugar and 1 tablespoon of minced ginger. You can even add in lime zest and 1 teaspoon of juice to add a little acidity to the sauce.

Mash up 1 avocado with your desired amount of hot sauce, then dip your grilled shrimp in it. Yes, it’s essentially guacamole with hot sauce, but that’s why it's so good.

Lemon-yogurt dipping sauce

For a light and refreshing dip, combine 1 cup of Greek yogurt with the zest from 1 lemon, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and 1 minced garlic clove.

Spicy mustard dipping sauce

Either Gigi Hadid & Zayn Malik didn't break up or she's in total denial

Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik broke up last week, ending another celebrity matchup of model and rock star. But did they really? Because Hadid's own words and actions say otherwise. Love is so confusing, guys.

Hadid and Malik reportedly broke up sometime last week after a seven-month relationship, and she was spotted looking decidedly down in the dumps last Wednesday while out for lunch with her bestie, Kendall Jenner.

See?

But wait! On Friday, just a day after news of the split broke, Hadid was back on the red carpet referring to Malik as her boyfriend. At Maybelline New York's LA Beauty Bash, Hadid told Elle how she prefers spending the night in than hitting the town.

"Cook. Paint. Play with my dog. Hang out with my boyfriend. Watch movies. Just chill," Hadid told Elle of her perfect date night.

Could she have meant a general "boyfriend" or Malik specifically? That is up for debate, but her behavior the rest of the evening is not. She later shared a Snapchat video of herself lip-syncing to Malik's song "Pillowtalk," and stepped out wearing a "Z" necklace.

Why are these two toying with our emotions? "Like all of these young relationships, it's back and forth constantly," a source close to Malik told Us Weekly. "They broke up but have still been talking constantly so it's not totally done. It changes by the minute but they did break up."

The pair's last public appearance together was at the Met Gala in May.

Signing a prenup doesn't mean you're betting against your marriage

Prenups are big news right now. Amber Heard and Johnny Depp didn't have one. Lindsay Lohan and Russian oligarch fiancé Egor Tarabasov are refusing to get one. Clearly, the prenuptial agreement is not en vogue right now. Hmmm. Wonder how Depp is feeling about that decision now?

More: I knew my first marriage was a mistake even before I said "I do"

I have very few rules when it comes to marriage. I have no problem with anybody's motivations for marrying. You're madly in love. You want a more secure financial future. You're pregnant and don't want to go it alone. Or maybe you just don't want to be alone. Like life, relationships and marriage can be super complicated, and things are rarely black and white. For some people, the all-consuming, can't-live-without-you love is the basis of a wedding, while others approach their nuptials from a far more practical place.

Whatever your reasons for marrying, though, you gotta get a prenup if there are large amounts of money, assets, or complicated finances at stake. It's a no-brainer. It's the sensible thing to do, and you can be head over heels, can't-live-without-you in love with someone and be sensible.

More: Quit calling Taylor Swift a failure simply because she's single again

And they're not just for celebrities: anyone who brings personal or business assets to a marriage can benefit from a prenup. It doesn't need to be a complicated legal document — it may simply be an inventory of premarital assets that remain the property of their original owner, in the event of a divorce.

I simply don't buy the argument that having a pre-nup is somehow tempting fate or suggesting you don't have faith in your marriage. On the contrary — having a prenup is proof that a couple is so tight, so on the same page, so invested in each other's future (either together or apart), that they don't see taking that precaution as a sign of weakness in the relationship.

The prenup has to be separated from the relationship itself, and the love you feel towards your partner. We don't think twice about getting car or health insurance, right? But that doesn't mean we think we're going to crash or get sick. We're simply acknowledging that those things are possibilities, so why is a prenup so different? You can't argue with divorce statistics. According to the CDC, roughly half of all U.S. marriages end in divorce. Meaning you're far more likely to get divorced than write your car off.

If anecdotal evidence is more your thing, have you ever heard someone (married or divorced), say "Our prenup ruined my marriage"? I doubt it. On the other hand, we've all heard (or read stories) about people who bitterly regret not having one.

It couldn't be simpler. Agree to the prenup, get it done right and then file it away, and hopefully you'll never need to give it another thought. But if you're in the 50 percent of U.S. couples who don't live happily ever after (not together, at least), you'll be damn pleased you did.

Game of Thrones' Rickon is totally just a pawn in the Umbers' scheme

$

Guys, isn't it about damn time that the Starks finally get some upper hand in this whole Game of Thrones? For 6 seasons we have watched this poor family get beat down beyond recognition and it never seems like they are able to get their revenge. Between the Red Wedding, Ned's beheading, Jon's murder and Sansa's abuse, these people need a point on the board.

Well, this season has started to turn things around for the unluckiest family on the planet. Sansa finally escaped from Ramsay's psychotic clutches and Jon got over that whole being murdered thing (goodbye, Olly!). This brings us to our next Stark predicament, which is the incredibly sticky situation that Rickon has currently found himself in.

More: Game of Thrones would totally bring Rickon back just to kill him

In case you have forgotten, I'll remind you of exactly what happened to place Rickon in Ramsay's control. A few seasons ago, Bran sent Rickon with Osha to go find protection with a known Stark ally, House Umber. I had pretty much forgotten about Rickon since then, to be honest, but all of a sudden he appeared again. Jon Umber (or Smalljon) came out of the clear blue with Osha and Rickon in tow to Winterfell. He surprisingly came to Ramsay with a promise to fight for him and as a show of trust, handed over Rickon, Osha and the decapitated head of Rickon's beloved direwolf, Shaggydog. Things appeared pretty grim for the youngest Stark.

Now, it's been a hot minute since we have checked in with crazy-ass Ramsay over in Winterfell, but I have a feeling things probably aren't super luxurious for Rickon over there at the moment. Here's the thing: I don't think that the Umbers are truly on Ramsay's side. I think it's a bullshit allegiance to gain Ramsay's trust to put Jon Snow where he belongs, leading the North.

More: Game of Thrones' new and improved Jon Snow is mixing things up in a big way

Think about it. According to the books, the Umbers are an incredibly loyal house. They aren't one of these names who change alliances willy-nilly (I'm looking at you, Roose Bolton, Walder Frey and Littlefinger). When Smalljon appeared with Rickon, people were confused and shocked that he would completely betray the Starks in such an awful way. There were clues in that scene that lead me to believe that Smalljon is playing a game of wits with Ramsay here.

First of all, he outright refused to bend a knee and swear an oath to Ramsay. He said that his offering of Osha and Rickon were his oath. Unfortunately for him, that's just not how this thing works. If you aren't swearing an oath then you have no technical alliance with a house. I think that Smalljon purposely avoided swearing an oath to make sure he could wiggle out of this whole thing once his plan came to fruition.

Now, I know what you are thinking. What about Shaggydog's decapitated head? That seems like a pretty legit show of disloyalty. Well, I don't think that was Shaggydog's head that he threw on the table. There are a few issues I see with it. First, that head was tiny. Take a look back at the scene directly following The Red Wedding, where Robb (R.I.P.) was paraded around with his direwolf's (Grey Wind) head impaled onto his body. Grey Wind's head was legitimately bigger than a horse's head. Jon's direwolf, Ghost, is also insanely massive. Shaggydog's supposed head was like a regular wolf size. That doesn't seem like it fits to me. Let's be real here, Game of Thrones doesn't mess up little details like this; they are pretty intent on making even the smallest things count. Also, why was Rickon so stoic when his beloved direwolf's head was slammed on a table next to him? Sure, maybe he is trying to be tough, but he's been traveling around with Shaggydog for years. Their bond has to be insane. I just feel like his reaction wasn't quite what should be expected.

More: Game of Thrones' Thoros of Myr is returning — but will Lady Stoneheart show up?

I know it seems a little tin foil hat-ish, but I think that House Umber is setting Ramsay up by using Rickon as a pawn. Sure, they are really gambling since Ramsay is such a sociopath, but they also know that he will want to use Rickon to draw Jon Snow and Sansa back to Winterfell. It's likely that he won't kill Rickon before he gets them there because he wouldn't be worth anything dead. Unfortunately, Osha had to be a casualty of war in this case because she wasn't really worth anything in terms of this deal.

Let's hope that we see Shaggydog return to eat Ramsay's face. I think it has the potential to pan out like this, but I guess we will have to wait and see.

Do you think Rickon is being used for a bigger plan, or are his days truly numbered?

Psychic readings, sound therapy and 11 other strange services for your dog

There's nothing I wouldn't do for my dog — at least I thought so until I found out about some of the things people actually do for their dogs. The list of services offered for canines is almost endless, and while some of them offer solutions that may come in handy, you have to admit that many of them seem a little excessive when you're talking about a four-legged member of the family. However weird they may sound, some owners swear by these techniques so let's at least give them a shot, shall we?

1. Acupuncture

Image: MyNeChimKi/Flickr

Doggy acupuncture is a real thing, and it is used to treat everything from pain, to musculoskeletal problems, digestive issues, respiratory dysfunctions and even skin problems. Experts say that most animals don't even feel the tiny needles, though new treatments that use lasers in place of needles promise to be even more painless.

2. Psychic readings

Image: Giphy

There's not a dog-owner who hasn't wondered what their dog was thinking from time to time. But you can put that wondering to an end when you enlist the help of a pet psychic. Find out what they're feeling, if they like their canine siblings, if you've really figured out their favorite brand of dog food and so much more. And even better? Some pet psychics can even do consultations over the phone. I'm sure your dog will be totally cool with barking into your cell on command.

3. Dye jobs

Image: Bill Dickinson/Flickr

You're not stuck with your natural hair color, so why should your dog be? If your dog's natural hair tones don't reflect the star that she is (maybe you should consult the psychic from above?), take her to a stylist who can transform her to a shade that's more fitting for her personality. If you're not into permanent changes, some salons can even apply a colored chalk to your dog's hair for some temporary color. We're told fuchsias and blues are big hits at the dog parks these days.

4. Pedicures

Image: Breigh Hammarlund/Flickr

The next time you take your dog to the groomer for a claw trim, don't stop there. Say goodbye to boring paws and add some color with a colorful pup pedicure. Just be sure they're using dog-safe, non-toxic polishes and stick-ons (because every dog paw needs a little bling). Your pup will be perfectly posh by the day's end.

5. Hypnotherapy

Image: Giphy

If you have a high-strung dog that just never seems to settle down, hypnotherapy might be just what you need. No more will you fret over a dog that just won't go to bed when you want him to — a hypnotherapist can teach you how to hypnotize your dog right off to dream land.

6. Chiropractic care

Image: Giphy

OK, so this is one of those that might seem over the top, but actually serves a pretty good purpose. Many dogs suffer from spine issues, and we all know that back troubles can cause all kinds of pain and other troubles. If your pup is a back pain sufferer, a doggy chiropractor might just fix him right up.

7. Therapy

Image: Giphy

There's nothing wrong with seeing a therapist — we all know that. But taking your dog to see one might be a little too much hassle (not to mention exorbitant) for most pet owners. If you have behavioral issues that just can't be solved, though, it might be an option to consider.

8. Sound therapy

Image: Giphy

This one might be a much cheaper (but still a bit weird) option for your anxiety-ridden dog. Studies have shown that certain types of music can help calm the nerves of dogs. Playing some tunes is a small price to pay for your dog's sanity, isn't it?

9. Plastic surgery

Image: Giphy

In a world where we are fighting the urge to always look as perfect as possible, it's pretty sad that some pet owners are now even turning to plastic surgery for their pups. There are surgeries available to give your dog better shaped ears, wrinkle reduction, facelifts and even eyebrow correction. And for those male dogs feeling emasculated after being neutered, testicular implants are sure to put him at ease.

10. Gyms

Image: Giphy

Walking your dog used to be a thing, right? Bonding time for you and your pet, plus a chance for you both to burn some extra calories. Apparently, pet-owners are out-sourcing that now, by dropping their dogs off at gyms to get a workout while they're at work.

11. Friend-finders

Image: Giphy

Did you know that there's a Tinder for dogs? If you don't want your pup to be lonely at the dog park, you can set up a play date in just a few swipes using services like Meet My Dog.

12. Massage

Image: Giphy

There's nothing like a good massage, and believe it or not, your dog can benefit from one too. If you have an aging or injured dog, massage therapy might be the way to ease some of his pain and get him back on his feet. I'm pretty sure I'd be jealous if my dog had a masseuse, though, since I definitely don't.

13. Swim lessons

Image: Giphy

We just assume that all dogs are born knowing how to swim, but not all can. And if your dog is less than comfortable in the water, what do you do? Enroll him in swimming lessons, of course! At least that's the length some dog owners are going to to help their pups learn the doggy paddle.
