I guess it's finally time we get over the initial shock of the whirlwind romance between Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna.

More: Blac Chyna shares first picture of new baby in true Kardashian style

It's been weird, you have to admit. They seemed like the unlikeliest pair alive. Plus there was all that awkwardness with Kylie Jenner dating Tyga, her older brother's baby mama's baby daddy.

But Kardashian and Chyna have been going strong for months. They're engaged and expecting a baby. And above all, they actually seem really happy.

Chyna has been all over Instagram showing off the progression of her pregnancy. In her latest photo, she posed in bright-colored workout pants and a black sports bra to give followers a clear view of her ever-growing bump.

Earlier this week, Chyna shared her first sonogram on Instagram, and that's where things got too adorable to handle. In a super mushy caption, she told her followers how excited she is to welcome her second baby and to continue building a life with Kardashian.

"For a long time I felt like King was going to be an only child. That he was my greatest blessing and we were gonna live happily ever after together Just the 2 of us," she wrote. "I was no longer looking for love because I thought I had all that I needed. We needed. But look at God ! Here I am Engaged to be married to one of the greatest men I know who loves King & I unconditionally AND having another bundle of joy!" she added. "I just want to say Never give up & ALWAYS have faith because fairytales DO come True #LookAtOurLittleNugget."

Rebel Wilson, we want to see you nude, and let us tell you why

Rebel Wilson graces the cover of Marie Claire U.K.'s July issue, and in the accompanying interview, she reveals a lot about her life — from crippling shyness as a child to her strict no-nudity policy — but it's the latter that really stands out for us.

More: Rebel Wilson's new plus-size clothing line is going to change everything

Filming for her new role in The Brothers Grimsby (she stars as the girlfriend of Norman Butcher, Sacha Baron Cohen's character), Wilson said they wanted full-frontal nudity, something she stated in her contract that she would not do.

"They got in another girl — this larger burlesque dancer from South Africa — to be a nude double. And they got her to do all this stuff. Sacha would go, 'See, she looks good.' I'm like, I'm not doing it. I don't care what you say," said Wilson.

While we have complete respect for Wilson sticking to her guns and not going against what she feels is right (and what was previously agreed in her contract), a decision to film nude scenes could actually be more powerful than a decision not to, because there is very little representation of plus-size women in the acting world.

The fact that Hollywood lacks diversity is nothing new: You can probably count the number of plus-size actresses you know on two hands, and you could then probably count the number of plus-size actresses who have filmed nude scenes on just one hand. So in my opinion, Wilson should be filming nude scenes (if the role is right), without a body double, as this would send a powerful message about body confidence and acceptance. It would show the world that being bigger than a size 4 doesn't mean your body is not worth showing off and loving.

According to The Mirror, a study from Durham University proved just how important representation is, finding that women who were habitually shown images of thin body shapes had an increased preference for thin bodies, whereas after being shown images of plus-size women, their preferences for slim frames was significantly less.

"This really shows the power of exposure to super-slim bodies," said Dr. Lynda Boothroyd, the lead author of the research. "There is evidence that being constantly surrounded through the media by celebrities and models who are very thin contributes to girls and women having an unhealthy attitude to their bodies. Our findings certainly indicate that showing more 'normal' models could potentially reduce women's obsession for thinness."

More: Rebel Wilson and other celebrities who won't go nude

Having only thin women put their nude bodies on full display creates unrealistic expectations and also sets a very narrow example for what is and isn't beautiful and largely accepted by society. Over the past few years, the industry has made some changes for the better, with actresses like Melissa McCarthy, Rebel Wilson, Jennifer Hudson, Mo'Nique and Gabourey Sidibe joining the ranks of Queen Latifah, Kathy Bates, Octavia Spencer and Margo Martindale. So Hollywood is slowly adopting less-rigid standards of beauty, but we're not there yet. In an industry where nudity is so commonplace, it seems odd, at best, that there isn't better representation of women with fuller figures.

Having said that, the decision should largely depend on the type of scene being filmed, and it should definitely be a role for which getting nude is actually empowering and not just for comedic value. Wilson did hint to the fact that she could be persuaded to film nude if the role was right, telling Marie Claire, "You want to know that the people [behind the camera] have a certain sensibility and decency. And a lot of times in comedy they're not those people."

An actress should not have to portray a character whose weight plays a large part of the storyline. Instead, they should be able to play a serious role, one where their weight is irrelevant and not the punchline to a crass joke. Herein lies the second issue: Are plus-size actresses getting the roles they really deserve, or are they being typecast into certain roles? Even the label "plus size" is an issue, because it suggests that it's not normal, something which already makes women question if their bodies are good enough to be accepted by society.

An article in The Wall Street Journal previously detailed the problem with so many roles: The actresses' size cannot go unnoticed. Wilson herself starred as Pitch Perfect's Fat Amy, and when she was Becky in 2012's Bachelorette, for the first half of the movie, her size was, once again, a major storyline — and she is not the only plus-size actress who has found herself in this situation.

More: Rebel Wilson claims her age debacle wasn't her fault

The world needs more plus-size representation, and we all need to realize now, rather than later, that there is more than one body shape that can be considered beautiful. You should embrace who you are, regardless of your size — naked or with clothes on.

17 unanswered questions from the Nashville series finale

$

As Nashville aired its final episode, it also teased us by giving viewers exactly what we wanted all along: reconciliation, romance and, finally, redemption. That's not to say it did it with gentle subtlety or grace. The finale brought a rapid-fire series of events, managing to tie up at least six season-long plot arcs in a marathon-like manner that would have made Usain Bolt proud.

More: 3 reasons Nashville kind of sucks now

However, despite this admittedly admirable decision to attempt to restore balance to the Nashville world, this terrible, exquisite, inconsistent, honey-sweet, messy, beautiful country soap slipped off air for the (presumably) final time with many questions yet to be answered.

First, credit where credit is due: The show tied up the Maddie story line, (finally) and managed to do so in a tactful and believable manner while also touching on sexual assault in the music industry, which is especially relevant in the wake of Kesha's current battles. It let Rayna and Deacon stay together without pushing Deacon off yet another wagon (which at this point barely warrants more than an eye roll, it's so expected.) It gave Scarlett and Gunnar hope as both a band and as a couple, gave Will the strength to fight for LGBT rights, revealed Layla's shadiness to those who mattered most, and gave hope to Javery shippers.

Nashville wasn't expecting to be cut off at the knees, so we can't completely fault them for what they left up in the air, despite their frenzied wrap-up. That's not to say I won't list the ever-lingering loose ends.

Questions I still have after the finale:

Juliette & Avery:

  • Is Juliette OK? Also, why don't I care more about this? When I saw this cliff-hanger, I don't think my expression changed at all, not even a raised eyebrow.
  • If she is OK, will this finally be the second coming of her relationship with Avery?
  • Will they co-parent Cadence and bicker about adorable things like which preschool to send her to?
  • If she’s not OK, will I ever watch this show again? (Assuming someone picks it up again.)

Maddie & Cash:

  • What incentive did Cash's dad have to destroy Deacon's family? I mean, this guy clearly had a bone to pick with him.
  • Literally, what is Cash's deal? She is as indecipherable as a Rihanna song.
  • Is Maddie legally bound to continue making music with that creep?
  • Will Maddie go back to making music with Daphne, her poor, overlooked sister?
  • Will Daphne ever get some attention from her family?

More: The TV shows to watch based on your zodiac sign

Luke:

  • Will this sudden martyr ever get a new love interest?
  • Will it be his ex-wife, who he mysteriously asked to talk to near the end of the episode?

Scarlett & Gunnar:

  • Are the Exes back together forever and ever and ever?
  • Will these two finally stop fighting?
  • Will they ever write another song as good as "Fade Into You"?

The rest of the cast:

  • What psycho antics will Layla try next? (I see this heading in an ominous Cruel Intentions-esque direction, but that might not be entirely fair.)
  • Can we please get Daphne a solo career?
  • Will Cadence grow up in the limelight to be a singer-songwriter and try to emancipate herself from her parents to become uber-famous at 16?

To the show that made me laugh and cry, sway and smile, sigh and roll my eyes, and eventually pump my stress ball until it popped open, gutted like my heart after watching the mess that was this past season, it's been one hell of a ride.

That's not to say that this is the last we'll see of Rayna's wisdom, Juliette's mascara-coated eye roll and Scarlett's honey-butter voice. With #bringbacknashville trending at more than 70,000 tweets after the cancellation news broke and talks of other networks picking up the show, don't put dirt on this grave just yet.

Why I do — and do not — agree with the Me Before You backlash

$
0
0

I am such a sucker for romantic dramas, and after being unable to view the Me Before You trailer without dissolving into a puddle of tears (true story) I decided that I must witness stars Sam Claflin and Emilia Clarke's characters fall in an ultimately doomed love. After seeing the film (and sobbing through the last 20 minutes like a baby), I would be lying if I said I didn't have conflicting feelings about it. With the film receiving backlash on its stance on disability, assisted suicide and what it means to live a full life, it's worth exploring what the film is truly trying to say — and while there are positive messages here, there are also plenty of controversial ones.

(Warning: major spoilers for Me Before You ahead!) Claflin's character Will is living with quadriplegia following a car accident, and ultimately decides to end his life by assisted suicide, leaving behind his lovestruck caregiver Lou, played by Clarke. Disability advocacy group Not Dead Yet UK has criticized the film for promoting assisted suicide as a viable option for people with a disability, stating that the film suggests that the lives of disabled people "are not worth living." So, is the advocacy group right? The group makes a very valid argument, but it's worth noting that it's not an argument that film itself seems to be making.

More: 13 celebrities who have been slammed for cultural appropriation

In the film, which was adapted from Jojo Moyes' novel of the same name, Lou tries everything she possibly can to get Will, whom she is falling for, to change his mind about his suicide. It's worth mentioning that Will has serious money — his family is loaded, and therefore Lou is able to plan lavish vacations and excursions for both her and Will to attend. Though Will's physical health fails multiple times during the course of the film, ultimately, he is able to enjoy himself alongside Lou. Though he can't scuba dive or take surfing lessons, he's certainly able to be present on these trips — something that Lou hopes will ultimately make him change his mind about wanting to die. Instead, at the end of one particularly wonderful trip, Will tells Lou that he is still going through with his plan, and, weeks later, does so with her support.

It's hard not to be frustrated with Will's choice — after all, much like Lou, I saw so much for Will to live for. Truthfully, I was a bit irritated at the film for completely ignoring Will's obvious privilege of wealth — so many people living with a disability would love to have the opportunities that Will did, as ultimately he has the means to make his life as comfortable as possible while living with quadriplegia. I imagine that the choice the fictional Will made would be devastating to a person who has chosen to live — and live well, as the movie hammers home — despite their own disability. I know from the wonderful people I have met throughout the course of my lifetime that this is indeed possible. I applaud the men and women who don't see their disability as a death sentence, but as a challenge that they must live with. The film, unfortunately, doesn't allow Will to see his as the latter.

More: Candace Cameron Bure gets real about what keeps her marriage alive

Me Before You is far more challenging a film than I expected it to be. Was Me Before You making the responsible decision in allowing Will to go through with assisted suicide? Truthfully, I'm not sure. As someone who has long considered herself pro-choice when it comes to assisted suicide, Will's decision made me question my own belief system. I wanted Will to fight for life despite its hardships. I wanted him to take the privilege afforded to him and do something with it. As a person living without a disability, perhaps this isn't a fair statement to make — I don't know what it's like to be in Will's shoes — but considering the backlash from people who do live with a disability, perhaps it is a valid one. I would like to say that I would fight for Will to decide whether or not he wants to live, but the message about his power of choice gets muddled when the movie makes it seem like it's better to be dead than disabled.

The burger you're grilling this weekend might be fueling our greatest health crisis

$
0

A woman showed up at a health clinic with a urinary tract infection. Another day, another case of cranberry juice, right? Nope. The entire world is freaking out about this poor woman's 'nethers — and for good reason.

This was no run-of-the-mill UTI, epidemiologists said, thanks to the type of bacteria that caused the infection: A "superbug" that has never been seen in America before and is resistant to all known antibiotics, including colistin, the drug doctors use when absolutely no other drug will work.

If you're not worried yet then you're not paying attention. Experts have been warning us for years that just such an apocalypse is coming, with the World Health Organization even calling it one of the greatest health crises we've ever faced. If this antibiotic-resistant superbug were to spread, it would take the world back to a time when there were no antibiotics, said Tom Frieden, MD, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "It is the end of the road for antibiotics unless we act urgently," he said.

More: New FDA nutrition labels unmask hidden sugars like woah

What does the end of the road look like, exactly? Nearly everyone alive today can't remember a time before antibiotics, starting with the discovery of penicillin in 1928. We've forgotten that pre-antibiotics, any infection had the potential to be deadly. People died of simple things like paper cuts and knife nicks, not to mention all the serious infectious illnesses like bacterial meningitis, tuberculosis and pneumonia. STDs like syphilis were a death sentence. Women routinely died in childbirth and one in ten children died before their first birthday. But in the 100 years since the advent of modern antibiotics, maternal death rates dropped 99 percent and childhood mortality dropped 90 percent.

And now, the tide is turning back against us again. "We know now that the more we look, the more we are going to find," Frieden said in a speech at the National Press Club in Washington. Indeed, the Centers for Disease Control says that more than two million people are infected by drug-resistant germs each year, and 23,000 die of their infections, with the biggest killer being the diarrhea-causing bug C. difficile. In addition, the World Health Organization says drug-resistant cases of diarrhea, sepsis, pneumonia and gonorrhea are infecting millions more worldwide.

There are things we can do. The WHO has outlined a six-point plan to help stop this problem while we still can. The biggest thing that needs to happen is the discovery of new antibiotics, but unless you're a microbiologist that's probably not in your wheelhouse. What we ordinary people can do, however, is stop using antibiotics when we don't need them. That means ditch your antibacterial soaps, toothpaste and face wash and don't beg your doctor for an antibiotic prescription when you just have a cold.

But do you know the biggest use of antibiotics? Over 80 percent of all antibiotics go to livestock and that is a massive part of the problem. "Sub-therapeutic doses of antibiotics are used in animal-rearing for promoting growth or preventing diseases. This can result in resistant microorganisms, which can spread to humans," according to the WHO.

More: A complete summer grilling guide for BBQ enthusiasts

You can (and probably should) purchase meat and dairy from animals that have not been treated with antibiotics. In the US, the "organic" label ensures that the animals haven't been fed antibiotics, and "grass-fed" or "pastured" meats will often do the same (check the label or talk to the company to be sure). Many local producers will also adhere to a policy similar to humans of only using antibiotics on very sick animals which are then kept out of the food chain until they test clean.

So, before you fire up the grill this Memorial Day, take a closer look at your burgers.

"Let me be clear: This subject of child abuse is an important one that should be discussed and properly investigated," Wood said, via The New York Times. "But as I made absolutely clear to the writer, I have no firsthand experience or observation of the topic, so I cannot speak with any authority beyond articles I have read and films I have seen."

In the latest in a series of sad updates to their divorce news, sources have confirmed that not only did Johnny Depp abuse Amber Heard, he attempted to bribe her to block her from filing a domestic violence restraining order against him.

An insider spoke to Peoplewhich is now claiming that Depp "offered [Heard] money to make it go away." Heard filed the restraining order on Monday regardless. She submitted a photo of herself with a bruise over one eye as evidence, leading the court to grant her a temporary restraining order in which Depp has to stay at least 100 feet away.

I didn’t want to watch the Roots remake, but once I did, I couldn’t look away

I didn’t want to watch.

I know the story: A young African warrior is stolen from his family, home and all he knows, sold away on a slave ship and brought to a new continent against his will. He’s bought, enslaved, renamed and forced to learn a new culture. And when he attempts to escape, he is permanently maimed. Somehow, he never loses sight of home; and somehow, he finds the will to pass on what he has been taught, ensuring that his descendants know their roots.

I knew all that. So when the murmurs of a Roots remake hit the web, I was leery. Laurence Fishburne as Alex Haley? Who would play Kunta Kinte, Kizzy, Chicken George and Fiddler? Who could do it justice the way Levar Burton, Leslie Uggams, Ben Vereen and Lou Gossett Jr. did when the original version aired in 1977?

And why now? It’s a story my parents, who raced home to watch the 1977 version as newlyweds, made sure I was aware of. It’s a story that fueled my family’s interest in genealogy. It’s a painful history that isn’t far off from most conversations about socioeconomics in the South, where I live. It’s a truth we can never quite escape.

But we’ve come so far, right? We have a president and first family of African descent. Countless children will grow up seeing that accomplishment as being within reach because it’s one they grew up seeing. We have the right to vote, and the right to eat, live and attend school wherever we want. We don’t need to rewatch this chapter of history, do we? We’ve long been free.

Or are we? Maybe the problem is that we can be so intent on facing forward that we fail to look behind us. But the past has dangerous ways of creeping back into the present and threatening the future if ignored.

In an age where people are being targeted and murdered simply because of their color and people debate whether Black Lives Matter, we still need to examine where damaging attitudes around race and class were born and shaped. Those “roots” are still bearing fruit today.

In an age where TV dramatizes celebrities tracing their roots, this movie reminds us all to look back and think about where we’ve come from.

More: How American Crime Story Season 1 will affect the #BlackLivesMatter movement

In an age where just last year, Texas textbooks referred to African slaves as “workers,” viewers will see for themselves the horror of the Middle Passage and slavery’s effects on generations of the American family.

How damaging was the Civil War across race, gender, class and continents? You’ll see it in this sensitive portrayal of conflicting loyalties and thinly veiled regrets. You’ll see it in the multiple ways men and women of both races were degraded through forced subordination.

Much of the film, which will be aired over four nights on the History Channel, will be familiar to viewers who saw the Emmy-winning original. If you’ve seen it before, watch with an open mind. This won’t be exactly the one you already know. This retelling’s strength comes from fresh takes on the familiar. Imagine a well-loved family tale being told from multiple perspectives, but still remaining a cohesive story with new details to consider. Viewers old and new should be prepared to let the story sweep over and engulf them.

This is no cheap re-enactment. Thoughtful attention has been given to casting and to how this material is presented. No detail has been overlooked, from Ruth Carter’s laser-sharp focus on costuming and Questlove's haunting musical direction. This is a nuanced, emotional — and yes, sometimes terribly violent — look at a chapter of American history.

William Faulkner wrote, "The past is never dead. It’s not even past." Movies like this — notably 12 Years a Slave, Selma and American Crime Story's look at the O.J. Simpson trial — give us opportunities to challenge the tendency to whitewash pain with nostalgia. We could all use a reminder about how warriors are made and why legends survive. In this reimagining, we receive a more historically accurate representation of slavery’s far-reaching effects on individuals and families across continents and countries, race and gender. And after viewing, you, too, may wonder what might have been.

More: #BlackLivesMatter co-founders on why the movement is more vital now than ever

We need to remember that we are all part of something bigger than ourselves, that circumstances do not diminish simple human dignity, that freedom is a state of mind, that we can survive and surpass any trial set before us and that we have a responsibility to pass our histories and traditions on. We need to remember who we are, and to be reminded that we all have the capacity to be warriors.

Do you ever go to the grocery store, and instead of buying fresh shrimp, you go for the frozen bag because the shrimp are already peeled and deveined? We know the feeling; you’re not the only one. Peeling and deveining shrimp can be a tedious task when all you want to do is have your shrimp scampi with pasta dish on the table in minutes.

More: Turn up the heat on simple shrimp pasta

It takes longer to peel and devein the shrimp than it actually takes to cook it. Or does it? Follow these simple rules, and you’ll be peeling and deveining your shrimp in seconds — we promise.

How to peel and devein shrimp

What you'll need:

  • 2 bowls, 1 each for peeled and unpeeled shrimp
  • Kitchen scissors
  • Paper towels

More: The 1 thing you must avoid when you buy or order shrimp

Step 1: Make an incision

One shrimp at a time, hold the shrimp with its back facing you, and make a small incision with the kitchen shears from the head all of the way down to the tail.

Step 2: Peel the shell

Once you’ve done this, the shrimp's shell should come off very easily. Remove the shell as well as the legs.

Step 3: Make another incision

Once this is done, the vein on the shrimp will become visible. Take your kitchen shears, and make an incision down the front of the shrimp.

Step 4: Remove the vein

Then remove the vein from the middle, pulling outward, and discard it on a paper towel. Repeat until all the shrimp are done, and then you’re ready to get cooking!

Rob Lowe might be swooping in to steal Fred Savage's Live! role

Live! is already moving forward with a new co-host for Kelly Ripa, says Entertainment Tonight. Insider sources say that Rob Lowe has started negotiations to reprise his 2012 guest-hosting gig as a permanent fixture on the show.

We just have one question: What about Fred Savage? Fans reacted strongly to Savage's turn in Strahan's seat, but then again — we haven't seen Lowe stop by yet since Strahan departed.

More: John Stamos and Rob Lowe confess their dirty relationship secret

With Lowe's show The Grinder recently canceled and his sons out of the house at college and law school, ET points out that he has the schedule and flexibility to pursue something as time-consuming as a daily hosting gig.

Lowe seems to be ready for the job as well. "I hosted it with Kelly and had the time of my life," he told ET. "I love her... I love being able to talk to an audience every morning like that and just being fun, counter-punching, being silly and talking about cool stuff."

More: Was Fred Savage auditioning to be Kelly Ripa's Live! co-host?

Next week's guest hosts include Jussie Smollett, rapper Common, Anderson Cooper — who has been widely considered a top contender for the job — and Mark Consuelos, Ripa's husband. The following week, we'll see an equal mix of hosts with experience, actors and comedians: D.L. Hughley, Joel McHale, Ryan Seacrest and Alec Baldwin. If Lowe is named Strahan's replacement between now and then, the pressure will be off these hosts to do anything but have a great time, which could make for some excellent shows.

There's nothing like beets to boost your workout — huh?

$

There's nothing quite like a tall, cold glass of beet juice to get you pumped for your next workout, amiright?

No? I get it. Beet juice isn't exactly the first item on my list of things to drink before heading to the gym, either, but a growing body of research indicates it might be exactly the thing to make your sweat sesh feel a little bit easier while you push yourself a little harder.

But before you make a mad dash to Amazon to put a case of the stuff on your Prime account, you might want to slow your roll. I'm a natural skeptic, and whenever a "miracle cure" gets featured on The Dr. Oz Show and new brands start popping up all over the place to peddle their wares, alarm bells start going off in my head.

The case for beet juice

Don't get me wrong. I'm certainly not going to tell you not to eat beets. Beets are good for you. They're a vegetable for goodness sake. Who couldn't stand to eat a few more veggies?

As I've mentioned, the current research regarding beets' athletic performance benefits is certainly interesting. For instance, a small study published in the American Journal of Physiology in September 2015 found that chronic use of beetroot juice (taking it for two weeks) prior to cardiovascular exercise enhanced oxygen delivery to working muscles while reducing the strain on the heart during activity. The result was reduced time to fatigue that made it possible for study participants to exercise longer at a predetermined workload.

The running theory is that beets, like many leafy green vegetables, have a high nitrate content. These nitrates are converted to nitrites in the body, which are ultimately converted to nitric acid. Erick Avila, the owner of Ergogenic Health, explains: "Nitric oxide has a vasodilating effect. Vasodilation opens up our blood vessels, facilitating the transport of oxygen to our muscles. The more oxygen we have transported to our muscles, the longer we're able to exercise (and at a higher intensity as well)."

All sounds pretty perfect, right?

Yet this study, just like the supplement companies peddling their juices, doesn't exactly tell the full story.

More: The truth about one-minute workouts

Proceed with eyes wide open

After doing a little extra digging, I unearthed a few more studies on beets and beetroot juice, and their results are worth mentioning. For instance, another 2015 study, published in the International Journal of Exercise Science, found that during moderate-intensity exercise, beetroot juice did not affect the volume of oxygen intake or work performed, even though it did lower systolic blood pressure and oxygen consumption. All that really means is beets had an effect on study participants, but not one that resulted in improved athletic performance. So, uh, yeah...

In fact, the researchers postulated at the end of their abstract, "Since the effect of beetroot juice on oxygen consumption is small... it is unlikely to have a notable effect on daily training."

Womp womp.

Also worth noting is a 2012 study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that found eating whole, baked beetroot before exercise made endurance exercise feel easier to participants. Which is a good thing, for sure... if you can stomach eating baked beetroot before you work out.

So what's the deal: Is beetroot juice a yay or nay?

Beets and beetroot juice aren't going to hurt you, so if you're looking for an edge during your workout, drinking about one to two cups roughly an hour before you hit the gym is certainly worth a shot. And if you're going to do it, your best bet, according to Avila, is to find a concentrated juice usually available at health food stores and some grocery chains.

That said, there's no reason to lay out big bucks for premade juices touting somewhat unsubstantiated benefits. If you like beets, just buy the whole variety at your local store and incorporate them into your normal diet. Or if you'd like, make your own beet juice at home.

More: 23 beet and beet juice recipes

If, however, the thought of eating or drinking beets before your workout sounds like a special sort of hell, there's no need to fall on that sword. The potential benefits of beetroot juice appear to be moderate and are most likely seen in specific demographics — namely, those on either end of the health spectrum, such as highly trained athletes or individuals with markers of heart disease. If you're exercising simply to stay healthy and enjoy life, the boost you may or may not receive from drinking beet juice probably isn't worth it.

Finally, remember how I mentioned that leafy green vegetables are also a source of dietary nitrate? Eating leafy greens will have a similar effect on nitric oxide levels in your body, which, presumably, would facilitate similar results. If beets are a no-go but you like romaine lettuce and spinach, go ahead and whip up a big salad or a green smoothie. Your body will thank you regardless of whether your workout feels easier.

Mark Salling's child pornography case won't be concluding anytime soon

Mark Salling, best known for his role as Puck on Glee, has been charged with a federal indictment for receiving and possessing child pornography. According to E!, court documents revealed that his personal computer allegedly contained "thousands of images and videos of child pornography."

Salling faces two counts of child pornography, including an alleged flash drive that includes images of a minor under the age of 12. If convicted, he will serve a minimum sentence of five years and a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

In a statement on the case, U.S. Attorney Eileen M. Decker stresses the impact of child pornography. Simply put, it creates a black market for images of children committing sexual acts: "Those who download and possess child pornography create a market that causes more children to be harmed. Young victims are harmed every time an image is generated, every time it is distributed, and every time it is viewed."

More: Mark Salling insiders say he's innocent of child pornography charges

Salling was first arrested in December after the Los Angeles Police Department Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Unit searched his home and seized his personal computer, on which the images in question were found.

Salling previously settled a lawsuit to the tune of $2.7 million brought against him by former girlfriend Roxanne Gorzela. She accused him of sexual battery, and Salling termed it a "fraudulent lawsuit," but he still settled out of court.

But her fans are going to support her no matter what: "Don't listen to what people say about the pose. You are perfect and an amazing person. Nothing can change that."

Another is only worried about what Mom and Dad think: "If her parents aren't complaining leave it be."

We'll be curious to see how the rest of the photographs, shot by Petra Collins, come out later this week. The good news is that Zendaya looks amazing and no matter what she's doing, it's all healthy. So why criticize?

Putting myself first doesn't mean I don't love my kids

$

Last week, I unwittingly dropped the equivalent of a hand grenade into a social media post on the cry-it-out method. And boy, did it explode. I was called a bad parent, that once you decide to have a child, they always come first — you're secondary. Because I admitted that I put my baby in his crib, left his room and went to sleep in mine, even if he started crying. I worked a swing shift; I'd head to work at around 3 or 4 p.m. and get off at midnight or 1 a.m. I needed the sleep. But honestly, it doesn't matter why. I'd made a conscious choice to put myself first, to put myself before my kids. And that was my grave sin.

I was pushing 30 when I had my eldest son and was focused on getting my career back on track. My husband and I had just moved back from Germany, where the Army had sent us for three years. And I was pregnant with him as I planned maternity leave for a job I didn't even have yet (six weeks, if you're wondering).

More: The hairy parenting issue I'm not about to get tangled up in

When I had his brother four years later, I was in a similar position — applying for jobs during my pregnancy, interviewing while on maternity leave. My point? I had many, many years when I had a career, friends, activities... before I had kids.

One of the commenters in the aforementioned social media thread made the perfect analogy: "There's a reason when you're on a plane you put your oxygen mask on first before helping any man woman or child. If you don't take care of yourself you're no good to anyone else."

But how many times do we do exactly the opposite as moms? Scheduling children's pre-emptive immunizations while we just deal with the back pain we've felt for months. Dragging home from a hard day at work (or hell, even dragging from your home office) to cook two different meals because one kid won't eat anything green. We get tired. We get sick. We get depressed. We try to put our kids' oxygen masks on before we put on our own, and even though it works for a while, eventually we get tired, we burn out, we collapse, we can't breathe.

I've been there before. I've felt paralyzed, unable to move. I put my schoolwork, my internship opportunities, my relationships, my community service and my two (and a half) jobs first. And I won't make that mistake again — not even for my kids.

That doesn't mean I don't care about my kids; they've changed me in ways I could never have imagined. Having these little humans who depend on you for everything and caring so deeply about them that it physically hurts to imagine them not being in your life. Carrying the weight of knowing that, my husband and I are raising two citizens in this country, and it's up to us to make sure they aren't a-holes, that they are productive, that they stay alive. I would do anything to protect them. And yet — I put myself first.

More: Maybe you shouldn't stay near the head when a woman's giving birth after all

I schedule happy hours with friends and don't cook dinner first. I go for runs even when I know the distance might mean I could miss bedtime. I schedule work trips without a thought to how my first-grader's school project will get done. I sometimes come home, hand them the remote and take a nap. I put myself first. And I'm a happier person for it. And my kids notice that. That I'm much less angry, much less stressed (well, most of the time) and that I (usually) have more patience.

Putting yourself first means that you're at the top of your game when it comes time to give of yourself to your family. Seriously, how can you take care of anyone else when you need taking care of yourself? I wasn't helping anyone by letting my own priorities and needs fall to the wayside — I was martyring myself. And when I made the conscious decision that I was the most person in my own life, I felt like I was finally giving myself permission to live.

My husband is a pro at this. When he gets home from work, he turns on the TV and sits down. That's it. He sits down, winds down and has that critical period that allows him to de-stress before joining the family. He puts his oxygen mask on first.

More: I finally understand how inspiration porn hurts kids like mine

So moms, give yourselves permission to put yourself first, permission to do something without thinking of your kids first. Get a massage or a pedicure. Send the kids to another room, and binge on Netflix. Make yourself an elaborate, ridiculous meal, and feed everyone else PB&J. Obviously don't do anything dangerous. But give yourself permission to take care of yourself. To rest when you need to. To unwind. To de-stress. Put your oxygen mask on first. Because until you do, you can't help anyone else. Especially not your kids.

Johnny Depp's downward spiral was obvious years ago

Amber Heard's accusations of domestic violence against Johnny Depp may sound shocking, but there are clues the actor has been on a downward spiral for some time.

Depp's behavior has become increasingly erratic in recent years, leading to rumors the actor is abusing alcohol — or even drugs.

More: Details of Johnny Depp's alleged violent behavior keep getting scarier

His 14-year relationship with Vanessa Paradis came to an end in 2012, and later the same year, he and Heard went public with their relationship after meeting on the set of The Rum Diaries in 2009. And in fact, the two were spotted together privately in the months leading up to his split from Paradis.

His slurred speech at the 2014 Hollywood Film Awards ceremony reportedly left Heard livid and embarrassed and got him quickly cut off by show producers.

Johnny Depp drunk at Hollywood Film Awards

Johnny Depp drunk at Hollywood Film Awards

Coming just months before the couple tied the knot, Heard was said to be furious at the display.

Then in March 2015, production of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales had to be delayed after Depp suffered a mysterious hand injury off-set, costing the studio millions as the actor had to be flown back to the U.S. for surgery. Rumor has it, Depp suffered the injury during some drunken shenanigans.

Depp started off 2016 with a startling appearance at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, looking bloated and disheveled. "His hair was a greasy mess, and his teeth were yellowed too. It was pretty shocking," a source told Radar Online. "He looked more like Marlon Brando than Johnny Depp!"

His award acceptance speech was even odder. "He kind of mumbled, 'How was the beef?'" the source said. "He seemed really confused and rambling and then just ended abruptly by saying 'It's over with, that's it,' before just walking off. People were kind of looking at each other like, 'What just happened?' It was bizarre."

Don't even get us started on that bizarro-world video "apologizing" for illegally bringing his and Heard's dogs into Australia.

And in fact, Depp has admitted to a love of booze in the past. He told Rolling Stone in 2013, "I don't have the physical need for the drug alcohol. No, it's more my medication, my self-medication over the years just to calm the circus. Once the circus kicks in, the festivities in the brain, it can be ruthless."

So what really happened last Saturday night? Is it possible that Depp tried to drown his grief over his mother's death at the bottom of a bottle, resulting in a blowout with Heard and in the heat of the moment, he threw his phone, which then hit her in the face?

More: Amber Heard had doubts about Johnny Depp before she ever said "I do"

Anything is possible. TMZ is reporting that a law enforcement source says Heard showed no signs of injuries when they came to the couple's home after receiving a 911 call Saturday night, and that Heard refused to file a report. However, bruising can take several hours to appear, sometimes longer. Another source told People that cops did see injuries and noticed the house was trashed, and that Heard declined to make a statement at the time because she was too shaken — and Depp was already gone.

However, the judge obviously saw things Heard's way and issued a restraining order against Depp. The actress was later seen sobbing in her car while leaving court.

As for Paradis, we're pretty sure her current status is "wandering around French château cackling while sipping from a bottomless glass of chardonnay and checking the TMZ app."

Will another Stark return from the dead on GoT to help save Bran and Meera?

$

0

The next episode of Game of Thrones might be bringing the past full circle for the Stark family. Finally.

Take a second to remember all the way back to Season 1, when the show introduced us to Ned's younger brother Benjen.

More: Natalie Dormer doesn't think Game of Thrones is revolutionary for women

Benjen was a member of the Night's Watch who went beyond The Wall in Season 1 and was never seen or heard from again. The theory is that he is either dead — having been killed by a Wildling  — or he was killed by a White Walker, in which case he's now a member of the undead.

Now, here's where things get complicated in true Game of Thrones' fashion. Just because Benjen may be a White Walker doesn't necessarily mean he's become a bad guy. In the books, we are introduced to a hooded character who rides an elk and seems to be a savior to travelers beyond the wall. He is dubbed Coldhands, though his real identity is unknown. He helps save Sam and Gilly from the White Walkers in George R.R. Martin's book A Storm of Swords. Of course, fans have put two and two together and have theorized that Coldhands is, in fact, Bejen Stark. A theory which I tend to think is a definite possibility.

More: GoT has a new Red Priestess: Here's everything we know about Kinvara so far

And it's a theory that could be coming into play on the next episode of Game of Thrones called "Blood of My Blood."

As you'll remember from the last episode, Bran and Meera left the Three-Eyed Raven and set out on their own after the cave was invaded by the White Walkers.

A promo for next week's episode shows the duo getting themselves into big trouble. But MTV reports a man on horseback seemingly comes to their rescue. Could this man be Benjen Stark? And, if so, is he the unidentified Coldhands from the book or is he still alive?

If it is Benjen Stark, my theory is that he will definitely be an undead character. After all, if he were alive, he would have a claim to Winterfell as Ned Stark's younger brother, and that would just complicated Jon and Sansa's plans to take back the North to the point that I don't even know if I can wrap my brain around it.

More: Hodor, Daenerys and Arya's GoT storylines have me ready to pull my hair out

Rather, if he is "alive", I'm hoping he is more of a friend than a foe. If he does team up with Bran and Meera, perhaps he will lead them back to The Wall where Bran can finally reunite with his siblings.

Check out the promo for "Blood of My Blood" below.
