A romance brewing: Why did Lena Dunham thank Chad Lowe?

Why did Lena Dunham thank Chad Lowe during her Golden Globe acceptance speech? We have the answer and it's more romantic than you might think.

Lena Dunham thanks Chad Lowe at the Golden Globes.

Lena Dunham thanked Chad Lowe. Yes, that happened at the drunken party that is the Golden Globes. In case you missed it, the 2013 Golden Globes aired last night and just as we predicted, this Hollywood party got weirder as the night went on and alcohol flowed into lithe actresses.

And one of the strangest moments of the 2013 Golden Globes? Definitely in the top 3 was Lena Dunham's second acceptance speech of the night for her HBO show Girls; Dunham won for Best Television Series — Comedy or Musical, and then she thanked Chad Lowe. Huh?

Golden Globes 2013: The complete winners list >>

"It took a village to raise this very demented child and I hope everyone who was involved feels thanked every single day… I also promised myself that if I ever got this chance I would thank Chad Lowe. I'm sorry! I just promised and I promised my mom!"

The cast of Dunham's Girls erupts in laughter and so does the audience. Did Lena Dunham just thank Chad Lowe? As in Hilary Swank's ex-husband? What. Just. Happened.

Golden Globes 2013: Lena Dunham loved by the HFPA>>

Dunham explained to the Golden Globes press why she thanked Lowe — apparently it was a joke meant to resolve an old wound against Lowe from Hilary Swank. .

PopSugar tweeted its firsthand account, "Lena Dunham on why she thanked Chad Lowe: 'Because Hilary Swank forgot. And because I'm an a**hole...' #GoldenGlobes press room."

Hmm, OK. It doesn't really make sense that Dunham would involve herself in an almost 15-year-old celebrity drama . Lowe took the opportunity to reach out to Dunham on Twitter and a lovefest was born.

Chad tweeted, "Congrats to @lenadunham on your Golden Globe win. But, seriously? You forget to thank me?! After all we've been through? I'm shocked." Lowe then said, "Dearest @lenadunham YOU COMPLETE ME"

If you're still confused — and we were too, so don't worry — the relationship between Chad Lowe and Lena Dunham goes way deeper than we thought: All the way back to August 2012.

Dunham and Lowe tweet each other a lot and this whole Oscar redemption move was in the works for a long time via Twitter. Lowe seemingly reached out to Dunham on Aug. 7, 2012, and tweeted, "@lenadunham What would make that whole Oscars debacle better is if you wrote it for me… Keep up the great work!"

Dunham tweeted back, "@ichadlowe What a day-maker you are! FYI I will probably mention you if I ever receive any award at all in my lifetime .

So there you go: The mystery of why Lena Dunham thanked Chad Lowe in her Golden Globe acceptance speech is now a solved riddle of the celebrity universe.

Watch Lena Dunham's entire acceptance speech below in which she thanks Chad Lowe starting at 2:53.

RED HOT BOOK OF THE WEEK: The Start of Everything by Emily Winslow

$

With a setting to die for and incredibly rich characters, Emily Winslow's newest literary mystery, The Start of Everything, is our Red Hot Book of the Week.

The Start of Everything

Emily Winslow is a relatively new voice on the literary mystery scene, but she is already showing that she is an author who can deliver reliably wonderful novels, first with The Whole World and now with The Start of Everything. As an American who has been living in Cambridge with her British husband since 2006,  she writes books set in Cambridge that are authentic in their setting and the voice of their characters, while still being easily accessible for American readers.

Winslow’s books blend intriguing mysteries, gorgeous writing and well-drawn characters, which is why we just can’t resist naming The Start of Everything our Red Hot Book of the Week.

About The Start of Everything

Mathilde does not get on particularly well with other people, but she is very well-suited to her work in the Cambridge post office following up letters with incomplete addresses. These days there is a series of letters that has captured her attention, increasingly desperate notes addressed only to Katja from a young man named Stephen. There is no Katja at Cambridge, though, or at least not one who remotely matches the description given in the letters.

From name with no person, to person with no name. Thanks to the spring thaw, a body has been found in the sluice gates outside of Cambridge. Detectives Chloe Frohmann and Morris Keene have very little to go on. It is clear that they have the corpse of a young woman, but discovering her identity seems nearly impossible as her body is so badly decomposed that there is not even the possibility of finding a DNA match. The only clues they have are the clothes the young woman was wearing when she died and some hairs found stuck to them.

The Start of Everything is told alternatively from Mathilde, Detective Frohmann and Detective Keene’s points of view, and before long it becomes evident to the reader that there may be some connection between Katja, who seems not to exist, and the murdered and yet-unidentified young woman. For Winslow’s characters, though, the process of discovering just what that connection is will force them to sort through a number of mistaken identities, misunderstandings and secrets, as well as some of their own personal weaknesses.

Justin Timberlake's first single in 6 years: "Suit & Tie"

Justin Timberlake is bringing sexy back with "Suit & Tie." The world approves.

Justin Timberlake's new single

When word came around that Justin Timberlake might drop a new single after midnight on Sunday night, I may have yelped.

It doesn't matter how country or gangster or hipster you are: Everyone has a soft spot for Timberlake in his or her music collection. I mean, who didn't love FutureSex/LoveSounds? It won't be long before we're calling it a pop classic.

Now, he's done it again. Justin really did drop a brand-new single just after midnight last night, and guys, it's really good!

Most important: He teamed up with Jay-Z to make it happen. And you know if Jay-Z touches it, it'll turn to gold .

While I'm not exactly sure who shows up to a club in a suit and tie , it's still easy to appreciate the song. From the beat and the brass to JT's always nice moaning, "Suit & Tie" is a really great pop song.

Just listen...

Obviously, the best part of this song is Hova's line, "Time for tuxedos for no reason." I don't know about the rest of you, but I completely approve of that concept. JT and Jay-Z are always welcome to visit me decked out in tuxedos.

Here's the thing: We all know the words to "Señorita", but JT does his best work when he's collaborating with someone else. Sure "SexyBack" is awesome with just Timberlake, but when you add in Timbaland, it's way better. Need further proof? Check out his collab with Timbaland on "Carry Out."

Kind of genius, right?

So, are you stoked for the new album yet? We haven't found an exact release date, but Justin did tell fans that the album will be called The 20/20 Experience. Until it comes out, enjoy the single!

Where to stay

Swanky. Sexy. Sleek. Miami's lineup of hotels is as hot as the sun on South Beach. Not since my visit to Palm Springs have I seen a collection of hotels that so perfectly evokes a destination's personality.

The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach

The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach

Fresh off a major renovation that includes revamped guest rooms, The Ritz-Carlton South Beach was originally built in 1953 by the "Father of Art Deco," Morris Lapidus. A polished design — which pays homage to the hotel's architectural history but is updated with shimmering accents and aqua-colored textures to reflect the oceanfront setting — includes a curated collection of avant-garde art and library of Taschen books. Sip cocktails at sunset on The Dilido Beach Club's waterfront patio and make time to visit The Ritz-Carlton Spa. The new Precious Ceremony Diamond Facial will take years off your face and starts with a relaxing foot-cleansing ritual.

Kimpton Surfcomber

Kimpton Surfcomber

Rooms at the Kimpton Surfcomber are small but comfortable and come with the basics. But you don't travel to South Beach to hole up in a hotel room. Drop your bags and head to Surfcomber's oceanfront pool where you should post up at The Pasture, a green space doubling as a lounge spot and sand volleyball court. Grab small bites like street tacos from the poolside Sand Bar and then cruise the boardwalk on one of the hotel's complimentary Deco bikes. Surfcomber's signature restaurant, Lantao Kitchen + Cocktails, is a must-try and an ode to Southeast Asian cuisine with a dynamic menu of handcrafted drinks.

Eden Roc Renaissance Miami Beach

Eden Roc Renaissance Miami Beach

Eden Roc Renaissance Miami Beach is a quintessential South Beach hotel that re-opened in 2008 after a $360 million overhaul. Designed by Morris Lapidus in the 1950s, Eden Roc was the backdrop for a Lucille Ball production and one of Elizabeth Taylor's eight weddings. Its Mad Men-style lobby bar is lively, the perfect prequel to ELLE Spa where a seaside cottage-inspired setting practically forces relaxation. But what the locals come for is 1500 Degrees. Headed by Hell's Kitchen alum Paula DeSilva, the restaurant's wholesome goods are locally sourced with items like whole Florida snapper and charred Brussels sprouts with mustard creme fraiche.

Shelborne South Beach

Shelborne South Beach

Crisp, clean and with just the right amount of bling, Shelborne South Beach is a 1940s Art Deco original with prime beachfront real estate. The classic Miami hotel is fresh off a $20 million renovation with restyled guest rooms and a sparkling new sushi bar. Love shopping? Start at the on-site GUYandGIRL boutique, a local Miami gem. For a dose of 1950s-style glamour, make a date at Vesper. Named after one of James Bond's choice cocktails, the restaurant dishes Gorgonzola sliders alongside Chicken piccata and spiced-up jalapeno mac and cheese. Lunch at the poolside Lucy's Cantina Royale is a must, too, with chilled margaritas and Baja-style tacos.

Delano South Beach

Delano South Beach

With a design evoking Alice in Wonderland whimsy, Delano South Beach is an oversized playground — antique daybeds, giant chessboards and a lobby made to make you feel like a kid crawling under your parents' dining room table. It's definitely a nightlife favorite. FDR at Delano, a subterranean dance club, is where Miami's beautiful people go after drinks at the lobby Rose Bar. And Umi Sushi & Bar and the hotel's signature restaurant, Bianca , are as much about the scene as the food. If you're looking for a cool and trendy Miami hotel, Delano is your spot.

Save the date: The royal baby arrives in July!

After weeks of speculation, we finally have a date for the most anticipated royal birth since Prince William: Kate Middleton is due in July!

Prince William and Kate Middleton

Break out the baby booties! Kate Middleton is pregnant, that much we already knew, but today officials released a crucial bit of information: The future heir to the throne is due in July!

In a short statement, St. James's Palace said, "Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to confirm they are expecting a baby in July."

"The Duchess's condition continues to improve since her stay in hospital last month."

Middleton suffers from hyperemesis gravidarum, a condition which causes severe vomiting during pregnancy and is often seen in women expecting twins — but from the careful wording of the palace's statement it is clear there is only one royal baby on the way.

"Rotten" Kate Middleton portrait draws ire of Brits>>

And what a lucky baby indeed! For the first time in history, whether boy or girl, the child will receive the same rights and privileges as heir to the throne. Ending a centuries-long tradition of male primogeniture, a first-born girl would become third in line to the throne after her father Prince William, who still has to wait his turn after his father Prince Charles.

Last week, Queen Elizabeth issued a decree allowing all of Will and Kate's kids to receive the formal title of prince or princess, a right previously reserved for the issue of the reigning monarchy and the Prince of Wales only.

But if the baby is a boy or girl remains to be seen, as is whether that will be made public information before the celebrated birth.

In the meantime, a spokesman for the palace said the couple is unlikely to take on any public engagements in the near future as William must return to his post with the Royal Air Force Search and Rescue Force, but added that the Duchess will likely step out again to rep the royals "in the near future."

Winter ice wreath craft for kids

$

Keeping kids entertained when it's cold outside is always a challenge for moms and dads. Make the most out of winter's frigid temperatures with a frozen winter ice wreath! Gather up some beautiful treasures from nature, like pretty winter berries and pine cones, and freeze them in the wreath. The kids will love watching their handmade craft glisten in the window.

Ice wreath

What you'll need:

  • a Bundt pan
  • pine cones, branches, berries, and other pieces of nature
  • twine
  • scissors
  • filtered water
  • a pot

What you'll do:

1

Go outside and gather up some objects from nature. Winter berries, pine cones, and evergreen sprigs can all be found in the winter season and will look great in the ice wreath. Arrange your objects in the Bundt pan.

Making an ice wreath

2

Fill your pot with filtered water and bring it to a boil. Have Mom or Dad carefully pour the boiling water into the Bundt pan. Freezing boiling water helps the water freeze clear rather than cloudy.

Fill pan with water

3

If you live in a climate that allows for it, set the Bundt pan outside to freeze. If it's too warm where you live, then put the pan in the freezer. Allow the wreath to freeze overnight.

Ice wreath freezing outside

4

Remove the ice wreath from the pan. If it doesn't come out easily, you can run warm water over the outside of the pan for a minute or two to loosen it. Cut a piece of twine that is 18-24 inches long. Loop the twine through the ice wreath and tie the two ends in a knot.

5

Hang the ice wreath outside in a sunny spot and watch it glisten. Kids will enjoy watching the ice wreath change shape as it melts too.

Kate, Amy & Kerry

Queen of rom coms Kate Hudson may not have gone home with a Golden Globe last night, but her black Alexander McQueen dress with gold embellishments had me at hello. Meanwhile, Amy Adams stole my heart in her ballerina pink mermaid Marchesa gown.

When asked about her choice to wear black instead of color, Kate Hudson told E!'s Ryan Seacrest, "It was a last-minute choice because the other dress weighed 500 pounds." So, comfort won her over. We can clap for that, right ladies?

I don't know what the first choice dress looked like, but her outfit change did not fail her. She paid great tribute to Alexander McQueen by wearing this fitted black gown for the 2013 Golden Globes event. It had such a sophistication to it while, in true Kate Hudson fashion, didn't dare lack a little sex appeal.

The front keyhole cutout showed just enough skin to be Golden Globes-appropriate and still make all her exes drool . The gold details were so elegant and not out of place among the other glittery gowns shown off by celebrities like Hayden Panettiere, Sofia Vergara and Anne Hathaway.

Amy Adam at the 203 Golden Globes

Now, let's talk about Amy Adams.

She was one of the first to arrive, and she made an impression I couldn't forget, even after seeing every other beautiful gown walk the carpet. The lightness of it made her look like a princess and the subtle pink color was perfect for her pale skin tone.

Paired with her retro waves hanging perfectly from her updo hairstyle, the whole look brought a very vintage vibe to the red carpet.

Kerry Washington at the 2013 Golden Globes

Last, but definitely not least, Kerry Washington.

She had a breakout year with her supporting role in Django Unchained, and she has been making stellar fashion choices while promoting the film. It's been impossible not to notice her!

Last night, as Django Unchained took home two Golden Globes, Washington looked nothing short of fabulous wearing a Miu Miu dress that was a little sheer, a little sparkly and a lot of amazing.

Downton Abbey recap: Drama downstairs

Edith's wedding is less fun for the residents downstairs. There are rugs that must be rolled up, shirts to be cleaned and ironed, and flowers to arrange. While the Crawley sisters focus on the swooning and preening, the servants of Downton have a whole wedding to put on.

Downton Abbey's servants' table

As the servants are preparing for the wedding of Lady Edith and Sir Anthony, they're also dealing with Mrs. Hughes' cancer scare. After finding a lump, Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Patmore go into town to visit the doctor. The first test was inconclusive and now Mrs. Hughes is being forced to wait while they run a more thorough test . As the women discuss Mrs. Hughes' problem, Carson overhears them. When Carson confronts Mrs. Patmore, she lets the cat out of the bag that it is probably cancer.

Downton Abbey Daisy

Carson eventually brings Mrs. Hughes' sickness to Lady Grantham's attention. Despite the lady's impending move and bad financial times, she tells Mrs. Hughes that no matter how sick she gets, she's welcome to stay with the Crawley family and even says she'll hire a nurse. Those upstairs people really do love their servants downstairs!

There's also an issue with Ms. O'Brien. Tom tells Mosley that O'Brien is planning to leave Downton and Mosley talks to Lady Grantham about a friend of his who could use the job. Except Lady Grantham knows nothing of Ms. O'Brien's plans to leave and asks Carson for an update.

At the servants' dinner, Carson asks Mosley what he's on about and Ms. O'Brien becomes enraged. She had no plans to leave. While the rest of the staff are annoyed with Mosley and begin to ignore him, Mosley tells O'Brien where his faulty information came from and O'Brien forgives him... but not without promising revenge on Tom. Eek!

After the almost-wedding of Lady Edith, even the servants are remorseful. Despite minor tensions, the people downstairs truly love the family that flutters above them. Even as they make stabbing remarks back and forth toward one another, they're all quite saddened by poor Edith's bad luck in love and seem worried about her. Carson even agrees to let the group make disparaging remarks about Sir Anthony.

Downton Abbey's Mrs. Bates

There's some other minor drama, too. First, the new Mrs. Bates continues to work toward clearing Mr. Bates' name. She still believes there's no way Mr. Bates could have killed his first wife.

Then there's Ethel Parks, who turns up to visit Mrs. Crawley at the women's center, again. She chickens out yet again, too, and forces Mrs. Crawley to head to Downton to speak with Mrs. Hughes and try to get contact information for the woman. When she turns up at Edith's home, though, Edith still won't tell her the problem. Will we ever find out her deal?

The most stressful event downstairs happened in the last few minutes. When Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Patmore returned from the doctor, Hughes sent Patmore to tell Carson that Mrs. Hughes was just fine and doesn't have cancer. It's a story even Mrs. Patmore seems to believe. Something about the secret look on Hughes' face, though, seems to suggest otherwise.

Is Mrs. Hughes really healthy or is it all just a ruse to calm down her friends downstairs and up?

Downton Abbey recap: Drama upstairs

Oh, the drama! Downton Abbey is on the verge of being lost forever, Edith is set to marry someone no one likes, and Mary's marriage is already on the rocks. Will anyone make it out unscathed?

Edith, Cora and Grandma

When we begin, the Crawleys are preparing for Lady Edith's wedding to Sir Anthony. There are presents to open and dresses to try on. Edith is practically glowing as, for the first time in nearly forever, all attention is on the shiest of the Crawley sisters.

As the wedding nears, Lord Grantham continues to worry about putting Downton Abbey up for sale. That unfortunate choice of investments he made earlier cost him nearly all of Lady Grantham's inheritance. They'll mostly be OK, though. They own some more land with a smaller house on it where they can "make do."

Downton's Mary

The money that could save Downton, Matthew's money, is on its way to Downton when Lord and Lady Grantham and their daughters head out to see the smaller house.

Matthew, in his infinite wisdom, asks Mary what he should do with the money and, of course, a fight breaks out. Despite his "respect" for Lavinia... that money could save Mary's family and yet Matthew refuses to use it for such. Their marriage is off to a pretty rocky start.

Later, Matthew gets a letter to accompany his windfall from Lavinia's father. Just as he's being foolish about his money, he's being ridiculous about the letter, too, and doesn't want to read it. Mary, however, reads the letter and tells Matthew of its contents.

Lavinia's father tells Matthew not to feel guilty about spending the money, but Matthew seems to think Mary forged it and he still won't back down about using the money to save her family. Mary tries to confirm if Lavinia sent the letter and, at first, misses the chance. But, then Daisy says she sent it for her. Sweet, precocious little Daisy accidentally saved Downton.

Lord Grantham doesn't want Matthew to just turn over his money, though. It hardly seems fair. Instead, they agree to be co-owners of Downton. Matthew will also be "Master."

Edith in her wedding gown

Meanwhile, Lord Grantham is still hesitant about Edith's marriage to Anthony. He's quite old and has a bum arm from the war. When Grantham's worries are unleashed on Anthony, he turns to Edith, offering her one more chance to back out of their marriage. She tells him she doesn't love him despite his injury, but because of it.

"I want you to be my life's work," she tells him, earning a toothy smile.

Finally, at Edith and Anthony's wedding, Anthony looks downright dreadful and ends up backing out of the wedding.

"I can't let you throw away your life like this," he whispers, before making a dramatic exit.

While to a certain extent it's good to know Edith stands a chance at finding romance with someone her own age, it's still utterly heartbreaking. What an absolute waste of a beautiful, leafy headband/tiara-like-thing. Who didn't cry when Lady Crawley curled up around Edith and tried to offer encouragement?

Poor Edith. Will she ever be happy? By the end of the episode, E looks absolutely pathetic. There have been rumors from across the pond that one of the residents of Downton may not make it to the end of the season. Let's hope it's not Edith!

Don't forget to find out what's happening with the servants downstairs!>>

Which exit for autism?

Despite all the research and data, endless debate continues about why New Jersey has a high rate of autism diagnosis. Is there something in the water or is it because the state has the best diagnosis and screening capabilities?
New Jersey sign

Despite all the research and data, endless debate continues about why New Jersey has a high rate of autism diagnosis. Is there something in the water or is it because the state has the best diagnosis and screening capabilities?

Leading states for autism diagnosis

When in the midst of our first date dinner conversation, my future husband said, “I will never live in New Jersey.”

While his statement had more to do with a much longer and more inconvenient work commute and less to do with my dearly beloved and much-maligned home state, two things immediately became crystal clear: 1) Who the [expletive deleted] does this guy think he is?, and 2) If he wanted to live with Jane Goodall or Dian Fossey’s gorillas in a malaria-filled tropical rain forest, I’d happily go along for the ride.

Who's from Jersey?

Still, the thought of not living in the Garden State depressed me. Aside from Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi and Whitney Houston— “the usual suspects” — New Jersey is home to many people of fame and renown. Heck, my own hometown of West Orange — the recent movie The Oranges paid homage to my hometown and its neighboring communities — boasts such famous residents :

  • Allison Ziering-Walmark and Ian ZieringInventor Thomas Edison
  • Israeli Ambassador to the United States Michael Oren
  • Songwriters Carole King and Gerry Goffin
  • truTV’s In Session co-anchor Vinnie Politan
  • CNN political analyst Hilary Rosen
  • NASA astronauts and American heroes Scott and Mark Kelly
  • Whoopi Goldberg
  • David Cassidy
  • Michael Pitt
  • Scott Wolf
  • My own first cousin, Ian Ziering .

The three S's

Sparkle princess

Something about the Garden State inspires romance . For us, New Jersey is about an innate love of the three S's: sparkles, spangles and spandex. It’s about how we created and perfected “How you doin’?” long before Joey Tribbiani. It’s about going “down the shore” for endless summers… it’s about knowing — from birth, really — every single New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway exit. It’s about Bruce singing about the virtues of being “in love with a Jersey girl.” New Jersey breeds a cult of personality. There must be something in the water.

NJ rules!

And, that’s just it. People say there really is something in the water. Despite all its plentiful assets, the Great State of New Jersey ranks second in the nation for children diagnosed with autism — about 1 in 49; the current national average is 1 in 88 — according to data the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .

For non-Jerseyans who haughtily grumble, “Of course New Jersey leads the nation in autism diagnosis; the place is nothing more than a toxic dump…” know this: The statistics are misleading. Utah and New Jersey lead the nation in the number of children diagnosed with autism precisely because they have the best diagnosis and screening capabilities; New Jersey in particular, prides itself on its sophisticated autism screening and diagnostic services, which can lead to all-important early intervention programs.

Not so sweet home Alabama

In direct opposition to the nation’s staggering upswing in autism diagnosis, one state bucks the trend. Alabama might be a place “where the skies are so blue,” but the state remains one of our nation’s most financially troubled. The fact that Alabama reports a drop rather than a rise in its autism rates is not cause for celebration; it’s cause for fear. Unlike New Jersey, Alabama’s educational system — and the state itself — simply does not have the ways, means or time to properly diagnose its children, which means a large percentage of the special needs population is tragically underserved, if served at all. There is nothing remotely “Sweet Home” about this burgeoning health crisis.

Endless debate

Despite all the research and data, endless debate continues about why New Jersey has a high rate of autism diagnosis. While some contend that Newark and its surrounding areas with its heavy industry and manufacturing are solely responsible for New Jersey’s high autism rate, Roger Kurlan, M.D., a neurologist at Overlook Medical Center in Summit , is leading a study to identify genetic patterns that may distinguish children with autism.

"Genetics looks to be the most important factor in the development of autism."

“We don't know a great deal about autism,” Dr. Kurlan stated, “but virtually every human disease is a combination of genetics and environmental factors... Genetics looks to be the most important factor in the development of autism." Like Dr. Kurlan, I believe wholeheartedly that my son Ethan’s autism is a result of genetics combined with the now-excessive environmental toxins, chemicals and plastics. Autism isn’t New Jersey specific; it’s universally prolific.

The gift of Jersey DNA

What is Jersey specific is that you can take a person out of Jersey, but you can never take New Jersey out of the person. True to his word, my husband and I settled in Connecticut. He may have won that battle but will certainly lose the war. You see, our son with autism fell in love with Springsteen and Bon Jovi music, so our home always rocks with a Jersey beat, and our daughter refuses to leave the house unless her outfit is adorned with an abundance of sparkles and spangles. Of all the gifts I could give my children, having Jersey DNA is the best gift of all. And they are the best argument for genetic predisposition, as far as I’m concerned.

Cinnamon sugar baked doughnuts

Doughnuts are one of America's favorite treats. However most of us only allow ourselves to eat fried foods every once in a while.

Cinammon Sugar Baked Doughnuts

By baking these doughnuts they become a treat that you can enjoy whenever you feel like it! They are best served fresh out of the oven with a steaming mug of coffee.

Cinnamon sugar baked doughnut recipe

Recipe adapted from 101 Cookbooks

Yields 2 dozen doughnuts

Ingredients:

  • 1-1/3 cups warm milk
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1-1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon

Directions:

  1. Place 1/3 cup of the warm milk in the bowl of a stand mixer. Gently stir in the yeast and set aside for 5-10 minutes or until the yeast is dissolved into the milk. Make sure that your yeast isn't too hot or it will kill the yeast. Mix the butter and sugar into the remaining cup of warm milk and add it to the yeast mixture. With a fork, stir in the eggs, flour and salt, just until the flour is incorporated, being careful not to overmix. With the dough hook attachment of your mixer beat the dough for 3-5 minutes at medium speed. The dough should pull away from the sides of the bowl and become soft and smooth. Turn the dough out onto a floured counter, knead a few times and shape into a ball.
  2. Place the dough into a buttered bowl, cover with a damp towel and put in a warm spot. Let it rise for approximately an hour or until the dough has doubled in size.
  3. Punch the dough down and roll it out 1/2-inch thick on a floured counter. Cut the dough out with a 3-inch cookie cutter. Move the circles to a parchment-lined baking sheet and cut out the inner circles using a smaller cutter. Cover with a clean damp cloth and let rise for 45 minutes.
  4. Bake in a 375 degree F oven or until the bottoms are slightly golden, 8 to 10 minutes.
  5. While the doughnuts are baking, melt the butter on the stovetop and transfer to a medium bowl. Place the sugar and cinnamon in another bowl.
  6. Remove the doughnuts from the oven and let them cool for a minute or two. Dip each one in the melted butter and quickly coat the tops in the cinammon sugar mixture.

Girls Season 2 premiere recap

HBO's award-winning comedy hits the ground running in its second season.

Allison Williams , Lena Dunham , and Zosia Mamet celebrate

It’s fitting that on the same night Girls cleaned up at the 70th Golden Globes Awards , its second season rattled off a sterling debut.

We last saw Hannah woofing down cake on a Coney Island beach. Our first glimpse of her in 2013 is in an equally unflattering view, wrapped in someone other than Adam’s arms.

Don’t worry. It’s merely Elijah, her former college boyfriend turned gay roommate.

The opening scene is a nifty, little trick by Dunham, whose directorial skills greatly improved over the course of the first season. She trusts we remember how Hannah struggled mightily with Adam’s avalanching admission of love that ultimately drove her to that soul-searching moment with cake on the beach.

Girls, which breathed fresh air into the TV world last year and set the world record for gratuitous nudity in a comedy, picks up right where it left off as we see Hannah, topless, and in the middle of the deed.

It must be Adam, this time, right?

Negative. It’s some random dude we’ve never seen before.

The bold move to begin with a diversion is optimistically a harbinger of growth and maturity, in not only Dunham’s career, but the show itself. Girls displayed so much promise in Season 1 that it’d be a shame to see it regress in its second year. Good for Dunham beginning with a bang .

Not much time has passed between Season 1 and Season 2. We know that because soon after learning Hannah’s fooling around with a new beau, we find Adam laid up in bed and struggling with the effects of being hit by a truck .

Hannah now assists his daily needs, and she’s become quite adroit with a bedpan.

It’s clear from the conversation Hannah has with her new squeeze in a bookstore that things with Adam have gone awry. She wants to tell Adam things aren’t working out — that she’s done, moved on, tired of cleaning up his piss. But with Hannah things are never that simple.

On one hand, it seems like the same old Hannah — stuck in a bleak situation at the mercy of Adam. But things are a bit different with her new man on the sly. Hannah’s completely in charge of her covert affair: No late-night visits, no social appearances, and certainly no mention of the word “love.”

It’s refreshing to see Hannah exercise a firm grasp on a romantic situation. We suffered with her through the turbulent courtship of Adam. It’s about damn time she started to realize just how wacko that dude really is.

By the end of the season premiere, Hannah finally gets the last word and breaks things off with Adam, who’s left hobbling to the couch on one leg. The imagery is poignant. Her strength versus his weakness represents a major power shift in the show.

Maybe this is how Hannah turns the corner this season and blossoms into the empowering master of relationships instead of being toyed with all the time...

Or maybe she’ll violate her own rule and show up at the door of her new boy toy in the middle of the night.

We know that by the end of the episode Hannah is still Hannah, but what about the rest of the gang?Jessa didn't play much of a role in the Season 2 premiere, which is a good thing.

Marnie is near rock bottom. She fights with her mom, misses Hannah, gets fired from her job at the art gallery, and hasn’t had sex in a long, long time.

When Hannah and Elijah host a housewarming party, we see Marnie at her worst as she struggles when seeing her ex, Charlie , argue with his bitchy girlfriend.

Marnie’s so despondent that by the end of the party, she’s half-naked and opening up for business with… Elijah? Sure they made out once in college, but Marnie quickly finds out that gay men don’t exactly make the best slump busters. The post-party couch hookup is arguably the best scene in the entire premiere. Williams and Rannells deserve a lot of credit for pulling off a strangely funny, yet deeply emotional scene.

Shoshanna , meanwhile, is fairing a little better than Marnie. We find her for the first time in Season 2 in her bedroom and performing some sort of deflowering ritual. Who can forget Shosh’s First Time with Ray at the end of last season? The experience seems to have left Shoshanna bitter as she avoids Ray for most of Hannah’s party. Eventually they kiss, make up, and presumably go for Round 2.

Jessa is the only member of the group we don’t see much of. We catch a small glimpse of her, fresh off the honeymoon and cutting the line for a cab at the airport with her husband. Jessa’s shotgun marriage to Thomas-John still makes absolutely no sense, and her lack of screen time is a trend that hopefully continues throughout Season 2.

6 Exercises to help kids with Down syndrome learn to walk

Children with Down syndrome often have a much harder time learning to walk, primarily because of their characteristic low muscle tone. Here are six exercises one physical therapist recommends to help children build strength.

Building muscle is critical to helping children with Ds combat low muscle tone and reach development milestones. Nikki Degner, MPT, works with children with special needs at Move and Grow! in Huntersville, North Carolina. Her daughter, Nora, and Charlie teamed up to demonstrate six of Nikki’s most recommended exercises to strengthen muscles key to walking.

Climbing stairs

Charlie on the stairs

This exercise has multiple benefits, Nikki says. “By working with your child to learn to climb stairs, you’re teaching a skill they’ll need throughout their lifetime, and you’re also strengthening all the ‘core’ and leg muscles needed to walk.”

An additional benefit is safety. “If your child learns how to safely climb and descend stairs, you decrease the risk of what could happen during those three seconds when he manages to elude you and approach a staircase,” Nikki adds.

In these photos, note that Nikki is supporting Charlie’s waist as he steadies himself with the railing, then presses a gentle “reminder” at his knees so he bends his knees to climb up. Taking a step up, then leaning on that knee and using that leg’s muscles to rise to the next step builds both leg and abdominal muscles.

Work is the pits!

Ballpit

How can ball pits help build muscles? Kids use their abdominal muscles to sit back up among the balls, which will constantly shift and force them to use their trunk muscles.

“Kids love to flop among the balls,” Nikki points out. “So make them work by covering your child’s torso with balls so he has to ‘climb’ out. This engages all his abdominal muscles and trunk muscles overall.”

Next up: Have a ball!

{pageBreak}

Easy exercise ball techniques

An exercise ball helps strengthen critical abdominal muscles — and kids love to bounce and balance! Two easy exercises can make all the difference:

Focus on balance

Balance - exercise ball

Note that Nikki is supporting Charlie on the exercise ball by holding onto his thighs, not his waist. “If a child really needs help, it’s OK to start by stabilizing them by holding their waists, but they’ll get a better workout by using their abdominal muscles to balance on the ball while you secure them at the thighs,” she says.

Nikki’s daughter, Nora, is older and stronger than Charlie, so Nikki only needs to support her at the knees as she balances on the ball.

Make your child’s abdominal muscles do the work by bouncing up and down and gently rocking the ball from side to side and front to back. As your child balances without touching the ball or you, these exercises build strength in abdominal and back muscles. An added benefit: These exercises help build confidence.

“Sometimes, kids are amazed at what they can do,” Nikki shares. “Accomplishing something that looks so hard can be a huge boost to their self-confidence, and you might get even more out of the workout because he’ll be willing to try more.”

Crunch time

Crunches

Another fun exercise: Have your child lay back on the ball while you secure him at the hips and thighs. As he crosses his body by reaching to the left with his right hand and to the right with his left hand as he sits up , he flexes the oblique muscles.

“Making ‘workouts’ fun is the best trick to getting a child to work with you and not against you,” Nikki shares. “If your child is cranky or fighting a particular activity, switch it up and try again later. You’ll both waste precious energy struggling to get through the motions, and the end result is less benefit than if the child is engaged.”

Next up: Take a squat

{pageBreak}

Squats

Squats

We’ve all done them, knowingly and painstakingly. But it’s easy to sneak squats into your child’s play by strategically placing toys where he needs to squat down to retrieve them.

Note how Nikki’s hands are at Charlie’s knees, gently reminding him to bend and squat instead of keeping his knees locked and stretching to his toes without bending. Once the child is in a squatting position, Nikki recommends creating an excuse to hang out there for a while, which helps to build thigh, trunk, hips and glute muscles.

Next up: Reach for the stars!

{pageBreak}

Reaching from knees

Charlie reaching

Again, it’s all about combining play with workouts that build muscle and balance. By encouraging your child to play from his knees, he can increase his balance and strengthen his legs. This exercise can also focus on fine motor development, by including a toy that requires specific finger movements, such as pushing a button or turning a wheel.

“Any higher surface will do,” Nikki says. “A step stool or small ottoman will do the trick. Even a stack of pillows creates a challenge high enough to make your child reach for objects on top.”

Next up: Creative crawling

{pageBreak}

Crawling — army or otherwise

Crawling

When Charlie was about 15 months, he refused to crawl or even try to walk. He got wherever he wanted to go via the “army” crawl, moving along the floor on his stomach by pulling with his arms and legs. While I fretted, Nikki assured me this method was helping to build muscle for when his stubborn streak gave way to his desire to walk.

Of course, now that he’s walking, the army crawl is a thing of the past. But introducing a fun tunnel or by stacking pillows under a big blanket, you can create a challenging way to bring back the benefits of crawling — and continue to build those arm, leg and abdominal muscles.

“Every parent is eager to see her child reach the next milestone,” Nikki explains. “But each child is determined to move at his own pace, so the best thing we can do is maximize their existing interests to build strength and balance, all preparing him for the moment when he decides he wants to get to the next level.”

Austin Butler

We're "Carrie'd" away with this cutie

As if we weren't excited enough for tonight's premiere of The Carrie Diaries, adorable blond Austin Butler plays a prime role in the Sex and the City prequel. DVR: set! Thanks to Austin, we're gonna watch it again and again...

Why we love him

The platonic ideal of a cute California boy, Austin is our high school dream come true.

Austin Butler

Born: Aug. 17, 1991

Hometown: Anaheim, California

Height: 6'

If a young Carrie Bradshaw adores him, so do we

One look at Austin, and we know we'd be head-over-heels in love with him had he graced us with his presence in the halls of our high school. Hey, we have a crush on him now, and we're not even 16 years old anymore. Austin plays bad boy Sebastian Kydd , who quickly captures Carrie's attention. But there's more to this cute guy than meets the eye... not all of it good. Butler, however, is quick to say that Kydd is no run-of-the-mill bad boy:

“He’s so much more than that,” Butler told Celebuzz.“And it’s fun for me because as I read the episodes, I get to see where his humanity is. When you first see someone, you might think, ‘Oh, they don’t feel this or they don’t feel that,' but then you get to see what he feels and what pushes his buttons. It’s really fun.”

We can't wait to check it out!

His resume is already stacked

Even though Butler looks young, his resume is practically the length of a Dead Sea Scroll, thanks to his early kid-friendly gigs like Aliens in the Attic, Ruby & The Rockits and Disney's Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure, in which he again starred alongside Ashley Tisdale. You've probably also seen him in weightier fare, like Life Unexpected and Switched at Birth, plus much more. When does this guy ever sleep? That's gotta mean one thing: He's a hard worker.

"As far as acting goes…You can never learn enough,"he once told Portrait magazine. "Even the greatest actors still go to acting class. Also, and equally important, be nice to everyone you meet, because the guy who’s sweeping the floors today could someday be the biggest director or producer out there."

Well said.

The Cast of the Carrie Diaries

He prepared for The Carrie Diaries in the best way possible

How does one educate oneself before playing an early incarnation of Mr. Big? By figuring out what makes us ladies tick. He told Interview magazine he rented The Breakfast Club to see what, exactly, makes Judd Nelson so darn appealing. And, of course, he watched a few episodes of Sex and the City. What did he think?

"I never pictured myself on Sex and the City,"he told Interview."But I watched the first two seasons in under a week and . . . Well, I get why women love it."

The Breakfast Club plus a Sex and the City marathon? Add a bottle of wine and some chips, and we'll be over at your house in two seconds, Austin. Best. Date. Ever.

Austin Butler's relationship status:

Austin Butler and Vanessa Hudgens

No low-profile romance here! Austin has been dating High School Musical actress Vanessa Hudgens, none other than Zac Efron's ex, for about a year and a half. The pair has been known to do yoga and go hiking together — adorable.

But despite how cool and collected the pair looks in paparazzi pics, privacy is something that Austin has fretted about in the past.

“You can go the route of not living your life at all — and a lot of actors do that, where they just won’t even go out of the house at all — but it makes life so unenjoyable,"he told Access Hollywood. "You can’t go out, you can’t hold hands with your girlfriend, you can’t do any of these things. So, I’m trying to find the balance. It’s just staying happy and staying present and not worrying about what other people think.”

Good way to look at it, Austin!

Aaron Sorkin says The Newsroom will return in June

Love The Newsroom? You're going to have to wait just a few more months for new episodes. You can make it!

Forget what the so-called critics say, The Newsroom is a powerhouse of a show whose first season earned tons of fans and even a nod from the Golden Globes.

We caught up with the show's creator Aaron Sorkin for a split second on the red carpet and he told us we'd only be waiting a little longer for our favorite news drama to return with Season 2. Expect new episodes sometime in June. Sweet!

Sorkin also told us he's surprised by the response from fans.

Aaron Sorkin talks about The Newsroom

"Listen, I'm always surprised when anyone outside my immediate family is watching anything," he said.

He's being modest. After seven seasons of driving the phenomenal political drama West Wing, he must know what a genius he is, right?

If you haven't caught an episode of The Newsroom yet, there's still time to catch up and we definitely recommend that you do!

The Newsroom follows the career of news anchor Will McAvoy as he and his news team navigate through big business to bring fair news to their viewers.

The genius behind the show comes from the fact that Sorkin and his team of writers take their plots from real-life events.

Last season, among other great episodes, we watched as Will and his team broke the news of the shooting that nearly killed Gabrielle Giffords.

We also watched as his researchers worked to uncover the truth of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. For anyone who needs more swoon than just the romance of news, don't worry: There's plenty of awkward and jilted romances on The Newsroom, too.

Season 2 of The Newsroom premieres in June on HBO. Until then, you can watch the first season on demand. Enjoy!

Celebrities tweet about Jodie Foster's weird Globes speech

Jodie Foster sorta-kinda came out and maybe-kinda retired from acting when accepting her Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award at the Golden Globes on Sunday night. Celebs react to the strange yet moving speech.

Jodie Foster at the Golden Globes

Celebrities must have gotten what Jodie Foster was saying better than we did — they took to Twitter to praise the 50-year-old actress and her nearly seven-minute Golden Globes speech while accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Some of Hollywood's favorite gays and bis liked her speech: Alan Cumming tweeted "Aww, Jodie Foster, I would like to be your friend," while Rosie O'Donnell said "Jodie Foster - rather amazing speech."

Ricky Martin tweeted "Jody [sic] Foster On your terms. Its your time! Not before nor after. Its when it feels right." Ryan Murphy enthused, "I love Jodie Foster so much," while Jesse Tyler Ferguson tweeted "Jodie Foster. You are perfection. I love you."

But Foster love wasn't just for the non-heteros.

Chelsea Clinton wrote, "Thank you #JodieFoster for sharing your grace & grit over 47 years, and most of all tonight #AnExample #GoldenGlobes."

Though Clinton's dad Bill was also on the Globes, she had no response to that.

Jodie Foster's Golden Globes speech: What was that?>>

Marlee Matlin wrote that "Jodie Foster at the #GoldenGlobes. Pure Jodie, rightfully defending her privacy with brains and a smile. She is pure class."

Kristin Chenoweth tweeted "I love Jodie Foster," Kat Dennings wrote "KEEP SECRETS Y'ALL #jodiefoster," and Lacy Chabert wrote "Jodie Foster is truly a phenomenal talent. Well deserved!"

Lena Dunham, a big GG winner for the night, tweeted that "The highlights of my evening were Bill Clinton and Jodie Foster."

Serial Twitter ranter Bret Easton Ellis was perhaps the only celeb naysayer of note, complaining, "Jodie Foster's speech: doesn't really come out, brags about being 50, kills off her mother, celebrated by the LGBT community for coming out…"

Maybe Amy Poehler, the co-host of the Golden Globes with Tina Fey, had the best response. As she signed off for the night, she promised, "We're going home with Jodie Foster."

Breaking Bad cast members talk about the finale

If you're not anxious for the Breaking Bad season finale, you're probably not a fan. Even the cast knows the end will be bittersweet.

Breaking Bad's Anna Gunn and Bryan Cranston

The Breaking Bad finale is eeking ever closer and fans are dreading the show's impending doom. When we talked with Bryan Cranston and Anna Gunn on the Golden Globes red carpet last night, though, the two seemed slightly more optimistic.

"It is bittersweet," Anna Gunn told us. "I mean, I love this show I love the people. ...So it's gonna be sad to see it all come to an end, but it's the time."

Bryan Cranston agreed. Right now he's doing OK, but when it's time to film that last episode, he knows it might be a little rough.

"...I imagine by the end of when we're shooting in March that there will be some tears," he said.

However, Cranston was quick to remind us that starting and ending things was just part of being an actor.

"In an odd way, we're sort of used to that, as actors," he explained. "Starting and stopping projects, splitting apart. Creating new bonds, splitting those apart. You know, we're kinda like atoms."

Gunn also reminded us that while we're going to miss our favorite characters, we're leaving them in a good place instead of keeping the show on for 10 more season of utter-nonsense, like so many shows try to do.

"I think Vince knows exactly what the arc of the storyline is and what he wants it to be," Gunn said. "And so I think it's the right time."

Cranston was snubbed by the Globes, again, but we're sure he knows how much his fans love him. And, while we still don't know exactly when Breaking Bad will air the season finale, fans of the show are definitely only looking forward to the episode with a cringe. It's going to be a rough year for everyone involved.

Anorexia and bulimia: Illnesses or lifestyle choices?

While most of us view eating disorders as dangerous illnesses, some people are finding acceptance and even encouragement in online communities often referred to as “pro-ana” and “pro-mia” . These websites beg the question: Are eating disorders truly illnesses or simply lifestyle choices?
Anorexic teen

Eating disorders glorified online

While most of us view eating disorders as dangerous illnesses, some people are finding acceptance and even encouragement in online communities often referred to as “pro-ana” and “pro-mia” .

These websites beg the question: Are eating disorders truly illnesses or simply lifestyle choices?

Across the country, teenage girls pick themselves apart while staring into full-length mirrors and mothers feel pressure to lose weight immediately after delivering their babies. Clearly we are obsessed with weight, but should we be glorifying extreme efforts to lose it?

A sinister community

Eating disorders, body image and societal pressure to be thin are topics that seem to infiltrate every high school, college dorm and gym. Some mommy groups even focus on losing baby weight. Under this pressure to be thin, plenty of women and girls find themselves falling into eating disorders and find validation online. Some say pro-ana and pro-mia sites lightheartedly glorify the "choice" to get thin by any means. "While an individual may claim that living with an eating disorder is a lifestyle choice, the truth is that an eating disorder is a dangerous illness that must be taken very seriously," says Erica Ives, M.A., MFT, CEDS, a marriage and family therapist and eating disorder specialist.

Pursuing perfection

"By framing eating disorders as a lifestyle choice, sufferers may have a false sense of control..."

An eating disorder is insidious enough without an entire subculture justifying destructive behavior as a way of life. By framing eating disorders as a lifestyle choice, sufferers may have a false sense of control — a belief that they can stop whenever they feel like it without ramifications.

"[These websites] provide a forum, to gather and share successes in their pursuit for perfection, to praise one another for ‘accomplishments,’ and challenge one another to be better and more skilled at their eating disorder," says Ives. While many sites claim to offer support or education, few, if any, truly address the needs of a person suffering from an eating disorder.

Find out: What is disordered eating?>>

Easily susceptible

It’s not just teens that are susceptible to anorexia and/or bulimia, and there’s no single cause of eating disorders. It seems the combination of societal pressures, media images and transitional life experiences can leave us all vulnerable. "The increase of media outlets and influence, including blogs, which endorse the pro eating disorder lifestyle, can be extremely intriguing to the teen, young adult and even the ‘first time’ mom population," says Ives. "These are developmental stages where there is a great deal of vulnerability to conform to a new identity and to fit in amongst peers."

Read more: How thin is too thin?>>

Convincing argument

Most eating disorder experts agree that anorexia and bulimia are serious mental health issues, not lifestyle choices. But, when perfection is the goal, we can talk ourselves into believing that an ‘ideal body’ can be reached through unhealthy choices. While sufferers of eating disorders may use this argument to convince themselves that they are in control, they are rarely able to convince their loved ones.

If you or a loved one is struggling with an eating disorder, contact a qualified professional.
