No really, all the single ladies don't need anyone to put a ring on it

I have long believed that no one should ever get married before they turn 30, but after reading Rebecca Traister’s new book, All the Single Ladies: Unmarried Women and the Rise of an Independent Nation, I’m pretty much convinced there’s no reason to get married at all.

Personally, I’ve never seen the point of legally sanctioned marriage, other than for the benefit of children (I’m child-free), to obtain a registry full of housewares or for tax reasons. And until last summer, the idea of marrying before my gay friends were legally allowed to do so was anathema to me.

Beyoncé’s the one who originally told us to put a ring on it, but a decade later she broke the internet with Lemonade, so maybe it wasn’t the best idea in the world. Frankly, I found the idea that women need to “put a ring on it” rather sexist — she was basically telling us not to give away the milk for free, suggesting that women only trade sex for marriage — not because they might want it, too.

More: The masturbation challenge your body is begging you to take

Let us not forget that marriage, until relatively recently, was a form of slavery for women. We were legally the property of our fathers until we became the property of our husbands — we were chattel. Love and romance might have always existed at the fringes of relationships or in special cases, but marriage was strictly a business transaction, one in which women had no say.

Before the 1960s, unmarried women were thought of as spinsters, weirdos, cat ladies and worse — after the age of 26, women were far less likely to find a husband, and they were shunned and shamed for it. Thanks to a laundry list of political and cultural sea changes: accessible birth control, Roe v. Wade, the sexual revolution and our mass entry into the work force, we’re freer to choose our own path. Traister points out that even though we’re getting there and changing things as we go, the law has not quite caught up to us.

We’ve happily put that ugly part of our history behind us and achieved a tremendous amount, thanks to our feminist forebears. But some of us haven’t quite gotten the memo about marriage and still see it as the hallmark of our lives, our grandest achievement. To wit: the marriage-industrial complex, “Say Yes to the Dress” and our obsession with celeb marriages (and divorces).

More: I'm anti-marriage and men have a problem with that

Just like having children, marriage should be a choice, not something we do because our parents did it, because our friends are doing it or because our society is still built for couples (and/or parents). In an ideal world, all marriages would be the result of a loving union between people for whom a legally sanctioned commitment is what they truly want — in their hearts. That “always the bridesmaid never the bride” sensation that many women feel in their late 20s and early 30s is a weird and wholly unnecessary rite of passage — and you can simply reject it if you choose to. The good news is that it fades faster than you think — and a sense of authentic empowerment usually replaces it.

No relationship should be built on the fear of being alone, and marriage too often is. The iconic single woman of the previous decade, Carrie Bradshaw, famously said, “Some people are settling down, some are settling and some people refuse to settle for anything less than butterflies... ”

Personally, I’m firmly in the butterfly camp, even though it’s meant some stretches of singlehood. I’ve learned to love and revel in these phases, despite our culture’s continuous “shipping” of everyone. Not settling is the best decision I’ve ever made, and every time yet another friend announces her divorce, I am reminded that I did the right thing.

Besides, in my experience, living with someone conveys all the benefits of marriage: regular sex, a snuggle-partner for Netflix binges and hopefully someone that does half the household chores. (However as a woman with male partners, I’ve never been terribly lucky in this last regard.)

More: Drew Barrymore deserves mad respect for calling her marriage a failure

Like Traister, some of my single victories have involved the carrying and/or installation of air conditioners. One of the best moments of my adult life came after hanging a shelf in my first apartment. It was crooked, but so what — I hung it all by my grown-ass, single self. It’s true: in many cases (but certainly not all) the thing women cannot easily provide for themselves is forearm strength.

Traister points out that the marriage-equality movement, whose beautiful slogan, “Love is Love,” filled our hearts last summer while the White House was lit up like a rainbow, began because gay activists sought medical benefits and next-of-kin proximity. The Supreme Court’s decision to legalize marriage for same-sex partners is no less moving for this fact — but practical considerations are what motivated it. That’s what I want women to ask themselves — are you marrying for love, for butterflies or because of someone else’s expectations?

Living with another human being definitely confers health benefits, but recent studies suggest that men receive most of the benefits of marriage. Loneliness is truly bad for your health — but being single by no means suggests you have to be lonely.

Whether you choose to co-habitate, marry, divorce or stay truly single forever, taking lovers as you feel like it — just remember that it’s entirely up to you. You’re not anybody’s property, so for the sake of the millions of women who came before you — don’t say yes to the dress unless you’re doing it for the right reasons.

5 things that should have royally pissed you off this week

As the old saying goes, “if you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention.” And if you’re not paying attention, you may have missed a lot of opportunities to hold your head in your hands and weep a few tears for the state of the world this week. We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but we’re all in this together at least? At least Lady Dynamite premieres on Netflix this weekend? At least it’s almost summer? Yeah, it would be all be fascinating if it weren’t actually happening.

More: Donald Trump's supporters have a real problem with this woman's hat

UGH.

1. Bernie Bros threatened to kill the the Nevada Democratic chairwoman

Sanders’ supporters, furious that 60 delegates for their candidate were deemed ineligible at the Nevada Democratic Convention, threw chairs and rained thousands of repulsive violent threats on Chairwoman Roberta Lange and her family. Sanders condemned the behavior but not super-forcefully. As Sally Kohn wrote in Time, “when you see progressive white men — many of whom enthusiastically supported Barack Obama’s candidacy — hate Clinton with every fiber of their being despite the fact that she’s a carbon copy of Obama’s ideology (or in fact now running slightly to his left), it’s hard to find any other explanation than sexism.”

OH GOD.

2. Oklahoma wants to impeach the president over trans people in bathrooms

So last Friday, President Obama instructed public schools that transgender students must be permitted to use the bathroom that coincides with their gender identity. On Thursday, Oklahoma filed a measure calling for Obama’s impeachment over this, and called the bathroom situation an “emergency,” insisting that schools provide a special bathroom for students who claim a religious exemption to the rule. If there’s anything “biblically wrong” about public restrooms, it’s that they’re gross little caves that smell like Elnett, pink marzipan hand soap and hot dog fart and no one will stop peeing on the seat.

More: Ladies, here's what we really fear inside a public bathroom

NO.

3. Oh, but wait, Oklahoma isn’t stopping there.

Did we mention that Oklahoma also passed a bill this week that would make conducting abortions a felony? Yup — doctors who participate in abortions would get one to three years in the state pen and be barred from practicing medicine in the state. "OOooklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain and the government is bigoted and misogynistic" doesn’t have quite the same ring.

MAKE IT STOP.

4. "Shame, shame, shame"

That’s what Democratic members of Congress chanted after Republican Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy freaked out when legislation was about to pass that would prevent businesses that contract with the federal government from discriminating against LGBT people. So upset was McCarthy that the amendment was about to squeak through 217-206 that he strong-armed Republican House members into reversing their votes and the measure was defeated, 213-212. Ew. Sigh, and ew.

THAT’S IT, CALL THE MOVERS, WE’RE MOVING TO THE YUKON

5. Trump, who "loves women," called Bill Clinton a rapist

Last weekend, the New York Times ran a damning exposé of Trump’s grody behavior with women ("'I don’t care if she’s sweet,' Donald Trump said. 'Is she hot?'…”). Trump is not about to let America forget that Bill Clinton has his own distasteful history with women. On Fox News, when Sean Hannity asked Trump about women's allegations of Bill Clinton “groping and fondling” them, Trump added, “And rape.” He was, of course, talking about Juanita Broaddrick, who accused Clinton of rape in 1999.

More: America is freaking out over a cartoon of Michelle Obama

Is Bill Clinton a troubling character? Oh yes. Should we take seriously allegations of his accusers? Yes again. But the fact that, like a wounded animal, Trump is lashing out against Hillary’s husband rather than addressing the allegations made against Trump himself, which demonstrates once again the kind of childish brute we’re dealing with here — the kind of childish brute who could quite easily be elected the most powerful person on Earth.

Fans will be very pleased about what's in store for Duck Dynasty Season 10

Duck Dynasty's Season 10 premiere is right around the corner, and we got the inside scoop from Jep and Jessica Robertson about what's in store this year for the Robertson family.

More: Sadie Robertson gushes over newest Duck Dynasty engagement

"We have two weddings we're working on," Jessica teased. "Missy's oldest son, Reed, and Brighton, and then Rebecca, Corey's oldest, and John Reed, they're engaged. I think before the end of the year, they'll both be married. And then who knows who'll be next!"

While Jessica shared details about the family events coming up, Jep went straight to one of the big things the show is known for.

"We've definitely blown some stuff up, which has been a lot of fun," Jep said.

Jep continued that on the show, it's usually the Robertson men rather than producers who suggest blowing something up in the episode. In fact, the Robertsons have a lot of say about what makes it onto the show.

Jep candidly explained that if something funny happens in their normal day-to-day life while the cameras aren't rolling, they'll recreate moments for the show.

"You know when you have a good scene, everybody gets tickled and then the camera guys, I'll just see them in my peripheral just shaking like crazy. And we have to stop and do it again, and it's like, 'OK camera guys, don't laugh. We'll do it again.' So it takes like three takes for the camera guys not to shake."

Jep added, "We've had some really funny moments."

"I think this season has kind of gotten back more to grass roots, funny, having a good time, you know what I'm saying? I think it's just good," he continued.

"We're kind of thinking this is our last 30 [episodes]," Jessica admitted. "It's just, you know, how many can you do?"

Don't get too disappointed, Duck Dynasty fans. After all, that means the show will be in its 13th season when it ends, which is a run no one can complain about.

"I could be surprised," Jessica admitted, but said these episodes are "about going out with a bang. Having a good time. Brothers reuniting. We'll have more Al in there, hopefully."

Jep also teased that there will be a few surprise guests showing up along with Al.

One of the topics Jep and Jessica said they'll be avoiding: the election. Don't expect them to weigh in on the candidates. Not only do these two try to stay out of the political spotlight — unlike some of their family members — but they also said with the timeline of the show being at least a few months behind real life, it didn't really make sense to incorporate those thoughts into the series.

"I try to stay out of that," Jep said of politics.

More: 6 reasons Duck Dynasty needs to go back to basics

But the fun, he's all about, and both Jep and Jessica seem to think this season could be one of the best and funniest in the show's history.

The new season of Duck Dynasty will air this summer.

Crazy cat couple had a dream wedding with 1,000 cats in attendance

As someone who's getting married in four months (yikes!), I've been thinking a lot about details that would make our wedding truly special. Sadly one can't happen no matter how much I'd love it to, and that is having our two cats in attendance. It wouldn't work for many reasons, the most important being that it's an outdoor wedding, and they're indoor cats with rather skittish tendencies.

More: Newlyweds act like ungrateful jerks over wedding gift

While I'm sad I won't see their meowing faces on our big day, I'm elated to know that other fellow cat ladies and gentlemen are finding ways to incorporate feline friends into their nuptials. Case in point: Canadian couple Dominic Husson and Louise Veronneau, who got married with 1,000 kitty guests in attendance.

These two lovebirds just made the top of my wedding inspiration board for thinking up something so adorable and surprisingly never before attempted. They got married this past Tuesday at The Cat House on the Kings, the largest no-kill, cage-free cat sanctuary in California. If you know how many cat rescue organizations there are in California, you know that's saying something.

The owner of The Cat House on the Kings, Lynea Lattanzio, who also officiated the couple's wedding ceremony, is famous in her own right. She turned her 4,000-square-foot ranch and 12-acre property into a home for wayward cats after she realized local shelters were euthanizing them. She started rescuing 24 years ago when she retired, and her cat tribe just grew exponentially over time. She actually spent her entire retirement savings on the organization and now relies on donations from philanthropic cat lovers.

Veronneau and Husson are such people, which is why they chose The Cat House as their wedding venue.

“I feel in love,” Veronneau told KFSN News. “I feel in love with the work Lynea and her team is doing for the cats and the rescuing.” As such, in lieu of gifts, the couple is having friends and relatives donate to The Cat House on the Kings.

And her now-husband thoroughly agrees. "We are both animal lovers, and it was easy," Husson told KFSN News. "She is a great person — that is why I married her."

The bride came upon The Cat House four years ago when she was traveling through California. She was so taken with the place and all they do for cats that she vowed to return for a special occasion. And what could be more special than your wedding?

Just purrfect. Sorry, it couldn't be helped.

Since the wedding was so unique, it was covered by several local news stations. Hopefully as a result of all this public attention, some of The Cat House's residents will find forever homes.

And who knows? Perhaps it will become the definitive wedding venue for cat lovers? Personally, I'm now jonesing to have my bachelorette party there, so here's hoping none of my bridesmaids is allergic.

5 medical conditions you never knew a service dog could help manage

When diagnosed with a medical condition, most people's initial reaction is to turn to traditional medicine — pills, therapy, expensive monitoring or mobility equipment. But what if a simpler (and way more enjoyable) method of monitoring and coping with illnesses was right under our nose this whole time? Well, good news, folks. Turns out you can look no further than the furry friend (most likely) lying right next to you.

More: My cats help me manage my anxiety, and I love them for it

Service dogs are nothing new. We have relied on dogs' keen senses for thousands of years, but not until recently have we realized just what an amazing resource our pets can be for medical purposes. Your family pet will probably not be much help unless he or she goes through extensive training, but dogs are being trained to help control, monitor and manage more medical conditions than ever, and the results are pretty incredible.

Take, for instance, Jedi. This dog has taken the internet by storm because of his heartwarming relationship with his young human, Luke. Luke has Type 1 diabetes, which requires frequent tests to monitor his blood sugar levels. Luke's mother recently shared a photo on Facebook, describing the night Jedi saved her son's life.

jedi dog

jedi dog

Thanks to Jedi's quick action, Luke's mother was alerted to his drop in blood sugar, and a seriously dangerous situation was prevented.

Jedi isn't an average dog that just happens to be able to sense an unsafe change in his favorite human's blood sugar levels. He is a service dog that has been trained to detect changes in Luke's blood sugar levels and alert his family when these changes occur. Jedi is not the only service dog that helps diabetics — organizations like Eyes Ears Nose and Paws train dogs to smell a change in their owner's blood sugar level and alert them when their sugar levels fall out of a safe range.

More: 6 self-defense tips I learned from my German shepherd

Pups are proving to be a valuable resource for people with a wide variety of medical conditions. Here are five other medical conditions you probably never knew a service dog could help control.

1. Autism

People have been enjoying dogs' calming natures for centuries, but this calming effect is especially helpful for children with autism. Organizations like Autism Service Dogs of America train and pair dogs with autistic children to help them improve their social skills and feel more safe and secure when they are in public.

2. Asthma

How can dogs help people with a breathing condition? They sense when their owner is experiencing an asthma attack and can be trained to alert someone nearby or press an emergency response button. Asthma attacks can be triggered by a number of environmental factors, like pollen or dust. A dog's keen sense of smell can alert their owner when they may be approaching something that could possibly induce an attack.

3. Seizures

There are two specific types of service dogs for people who suffer from seizures: response dogs and alert dogs. Similar to asthma service dogs, seizure response dogs will seek out help from others or activate an emergency button when their owner is experiencing a seizure. Alert dogs can sense a seizure coming up to an hour before it actually occurs. This early detection is key in allowing their owners to get to a safe place and seek medical help before the seizure actually happens.

4. Traumatic brain injuries

Traumatic brain injury patients can suffer from a multitude of symptoms, ranging from physical immobility to emotional distress. Service dogs assist their owners with balance and mobility, help them get dressed and can even help with daily chores, like cleaning. TBIs are often accompanied by mental side effects, like anxiety and depression, as well. Dogs give their owners a great sense of calming comfort and are a great companion during times of emotional distress.

5. Lupus

Lupus is an autoimmune disorder that can cause extreme fatigue, joint pain and even memory loss. When a lupus flare-up causes someone to feel weak and tired, a service dog can help open doors for them, pick up dropped items and even assist with grocery shopping. They can also assist with joint pain by allowing their owner to put some of their weight on the dog when they need to get up from a seated position.

Is being a woman equivalent to being a slave? Michelle Rodriguez thinks so

Caught on her way to a flight by TMZ, Michelle Rodriguez gives a surprise and surprisingly great interview about the state of the wage gap in Hollywood. After taking a moment to realize what the cameraman is asking ("Weight gap?") she gets on board with chatting about her feelings — all while checking in for her upcoming flight.

"It's a patriarchal society," she says. “It’s like being born a slave. You know it’s like, 'Oh damn. Darn my luck. I wish I was born somewhere else or maybe some other way,'" she continued. "But it is what it is."

She did agree that the gap exists. “I get paid a lot less than my colleagues.”

Rodriguez has been open about sexism in Hollywood in the past. In an interview with NJ.com last March, she said she has to work to steer clear of the female character archetypes that are so often being offered to her because of her gender. "I’m really picky about the parts I choose," she said. "I can’t be the slut. I cannot be just the girlfriend. I can’t be the girl who gets empowered because she’s been raped. I can’t be the girl who gets empowered and then dies."

If Fifty Shades of Grey was too tame for you, you've gotta watch Submission

If you're a fan of the Fifty Shades of Grey books but found yourself disappointed by the lack of steaminess in the movie version — and let's be real, the flick majorly fell short of expectations — Showtime may just have the real deal for you.

The network debuts Submission on May 12, and it's basically a no-holds-barred Fifty Shades of Grey on crack.

50 Shades of Grey gif

While Fifty Shades of Grey the movie failed to arouse interest for many, Submission is taking viewers deep into the world of BDSM — and it doesn't seem to be afraid to go there. The show focus is around Ashley, a beautiful but sexually unfulfilled woman who reads an erotic novel called Slave and embarks on her own journey into BDSM herself.

So far, reaction has been positive and fans of the show have praised it for its authenticity.

The authenticity of the show is probably due to the fact that its creator, writer and director is award-winning pornographic filmmaker Jacky St. James.

More: Lisa Wilkinson hated Fifty Shades of Grey and isn't afraid to say it

St. James didn't want to make just any old erotic series when she created Submission. She was on a mission to tell a truthful story about sexual desire — and debunk what she felt was an abusive portrayal of BDSM in Fifty Shades of Grey.

"I wanted to really showcase the idea that there is no normal when it comes to sex," St. James said to Uproxx. "Everything is normal. I really wanted to normalize something like BDSM, which people often stigmatize and judge without really knowing much about it. I wanted to humanize it. I think when people think BDSM, they have these very disgusting, grotesque notions of what it is. It could be either beating the hell out of somebody, which is not really the way it is, or they’re using Fifty Shades as a template, which is also really grotesque."

Submission airs on Thursdays at 11/10c on Showtime.

'Old MacDonald' is our Friday jam, thanks to a video of Gwen Stefani's son

With two hugely successful musicians as parents, it's no wonder Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale's son Apollo is a natural onstage.

Stefani posted an adorable video of Apollo on Snapchat yesterday, and the tot was showing off his chops with a killer rendition of "Old MacDonald" that would totally get a coach on The Voice to turn her chair around.

"Old MacDonald had a cow, E-I-E-I-O!" Apollo sang on the mic while standing on his own makeshift stage — not a trace of stage fright to be seen.

More: Gwen Stefani was legitimately worried she'd hate Blake Shelton's duet

Adorable, to be sure, but something else caught our eye in this video: the gigantic rock on Stefani's right hand.

Seriously, it's huge. It doesn't look like either of the wedding rings or the engagement ring she sported before her split from Rossdale, but it has a definite wedding vibe, like a stacked engagement and wedding ring.

Before anyone gets too excited, we don't think it's some secret wedding signal with her and Blake Shelton. The ring is on her right hand, after all, and the ink is barely dry on the divorce papers from Rossdale. Hopefully, she and Shelton, who is still recovering from his own divorce from Miranda Lambert, would take things a bit slower, even if she did save his life and he hers.

Mmmmm, warm chocolate sauce oozing out of a tender chocolate cake, served with a cool scoop of premium ice cream — this is the epitome of knee-weakening desserts.

Serves 6

Ingredients:

 • 10 ounces bittersweet chocolate (not unsweetened baking chocolate), chopped, divided
 • 2 ounces unsweetened baking chocolate, chopped
 • 1/3 cup hot water
 • 1/4 cup light corn syrup
 • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
 • 10 tablespoons unsalted butter
 • 3 eggs
 • 3 egg yolks
 • 1-1/2 cups powdered sugar
 • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
 • 3 cups premium vanilla bean ice cream

More: 15 grill-able dinner ideas for your next camping trip

Directions:

 1. Heat the oven to 450 degrees F, and grease 6 (6-ounce) ramekins.
 2. To make the chocolate sauce, stir together 5 ounces of the bittersweet chocolate and the unsweetened chocolate in a double boiler over simmering water. Stir until the chocolates are melted and smooth.
 3. Whisk in the hot water, corn syrup and vanilla until the mixture is smooth.
 4. Remove from the heat, and set aside to cool while you prepare the cakes.
 5. To make the cake batter, in a medium saucepan over low heat, stir together the remaining 5 ounces of bittersweet chocolate and the butter until melted and smooth. Remove from the heat, and let cool slightly.
 6. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs and egg yolks until well blended. Whisk in the sugar and then the chocolate-butter mixture and flour until blended.
 7. Pour the cake batter into the prepared ramekins until they are equally filled.
 8. Place the ramekins on a baking sheet, and bake for 11 – 12 minutes or until the tops and sides of cakes are set. These are slightly underbaked to allow the insides to ooze out.
 9. Run a small knife around the cakes to loosen them from the ramekins. Immediately turn the cakes out onto plates.
 10. To serve, spoon the chocolate sauce around the cakes, and partner each with a scoop of ice cream.

 • 6 tablespoons (1/3 stick) butter, melted
 • 2 cups chilled whipping cream, divided

Directions:

 1. Heat the oven to 350 degrees F, and spray a 9-inch pie plate with cooking spray.
 2. In a small bowl, combine the crushed chocolate wafers, chocolate chips and butter.
 3. Pour the wafer mixture into a prepared pie plate, and using your fingers, press the crumb mixture into the bottom and sides of the plate in an even layer.
 4. Bake for 12 – 13 minutes. Set the pie plate on a wire rack to cool.
 5. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup of whipping cream and the peanut butter chips. Cook, stirring often, until the peanut butter chips are melted and the mixture is smooth. Set aside to cool.
 6. In a large bowl, whip the remaining 1 cup of whipping cream and the vanilla with a hand mixer until firm peaks form. Use a spatula to gently and gradually fold the cooled peanut butter mixture into the whipped cream.

 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt.
 3. In the bowl of a standing mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the butter and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy.
 4. Beat the egg yolks 1 at a time into the butter mixture, beating well after each addition.
 5. Alternately beat in the flour mixture and milk into the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.

 12. Put the remaining cake half cut side up on top of the ice cream, and brush with the remaining lemon juice.
 13. Spread 1/2 the remaining ice cream evenly over the cake layer. Place the springform pan in the freezer, and freeze overnight. (Freeze the remaining ice cream until ready to serve.)
 14. Remove the sides of the springform pan, and "frost" the cake with the remaining ice cream. Place the cake back into the freezer, and let freeze until the ice cream has firmed but not hardened.
 15. Serve the cake garnished with fresh strawberries and shaved chocolate, if using.

Note: This ice cream cake can be frozen, covered, for up to 1 week. Let soften at room temperature for 15 minutes or in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before you slice and serve.

We revisited the '70s and '90s this week while still battling some modern problems. Never a dull moment, right?

Here are some hot moments in pop culture you might have missed if you weren't paying attention.

1. Robin Wright demands equal pay

In an interview with The Rockefeller Foundation on Tuesday, Wright admitted that she stood up and demanded that she be paid as much as her House of Cards co-star Kevin Spacey.

"I was like, 'I want to be paid the same as Kevin,'" she said. "I was looking at the statistics and Claire Underwood's character was more popular than [Frank's] for a period of time. So I capitalized on it. I was like, 'You better pay me or I'm going to go public.'"

Wright's demands were met.

Meyers resurrected a Saturday Night Live sketch and Andy Samberg's hair circa 2006 for a hilarious "Second Chance Theatre" on Late Night with Seth Meyers this week.

While I can totally understand why this sketch got scrapped back in the day, it still makes me nostalgic for casts of SNL past.

4. Rage Against the Machine launches a new supergroup

This week, '90s kids were intrigued when Rage Against the Machine launched a website with a countdown to June 1 and a classic Rage image with #takethepowerback underneath.

Turns out the countdown is not for anything specific to Rage Against the Machine, per se. It's all about guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk joining forces with Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Cypress Hill’s B-Real to form a supergroup called Prophets of Rage, according to Billboard. Rage vocalist Zack de la Rocha is not involved.

Prophets of Rage will perform for the first time at the Hollywood Palladium on June 3, and a show at L.A.'s Whisky a Go Go is planned as well. Billboard reports that a 2016 summer tour is also in the works.

5. Blake Lively gets spanked on Instagram

Lively caught some major backlash for posting a picture of herself at Cannes with the caption "L.A. face with an Oakland booty" — lyrics from Sir Mix-a-Lot's song "Baby Got Back."

Many felt Lively's use of the lyric was problematic, but Sir Mix-a-Lot himself approved the usage of the lyric and spoke out in support of Lively.

"That song was written with African American women in mind, but trust me, there are white women with those curves everywhere, and they were once considered fat. And that's what the song was about. It wasn't about some race battle," he said, via Pret-a-Reporter.

Crazy-amazing sex toys to go out with a bang during National Masturbation Month

$

May is officially #MasturbationMonth, and that means that you’re all busy getting your orgasm on, right? At least I hope you are! If you’re taking the #Ogame Challenge with me, you know that having a solo sex routine is a must, unless you have an energizer bunny of a partner who believes giving you orgasms is his or her second job.

More: Orgasmic meditation is the new yoga — only better

Even if you’re blessed with this kind of unicorn relationship, solo sex is still important for health and well-being. Regularly engaging in self-pleasure enables us to experiment with different kinds of touch, fueling different kinds of orgasms — from clitoral to vaginal to blended, G-spot orgasms.

So what’s new for your pussy (cat)?

Let’s begin with the newest offerings from my favorite sex toy company of all time — Jimmyjane. This San Francisco-based company has been on my radar since 2010, when I first discovered them and was so impressed that I included one of their toys in my book, Eco-Sex. (I called their Form 6 model life-changing, and I haven’t deviated from that review.)

Jimmyjane was the leading force in the explosion of amazing sex toys of the last half-decade (and the explosive orgasms that have followed). What I most love about this company is their commitment to sustainability and their well thought-out designs. They were one of the first sex toy companies to test and crowd-source their design concepts to make sure they really worked for women’s bodies. Before the early aughts, companies like this just didn’t exist.

More: 7 sex toys to add to your masturbation bucket list

All their toys are made from body-safe silicone, and they’re made to last — this is what makes them so sustainable. The old-style, flimsy toys, vibrators and dildos included, were made of cheap, toxic plastics. Nobody needs phthalates near their nether regions. Jimmyjane recognized this and began making their toys with safety and pleasure in mind. Even better, all their designs are created in-house, instead of outsourced to companies in China, as so many other companies (still) do.

If there’s been any reason to criticize Jimmyjane, it’s that their high-quality toys necessitated an equally high price point, putting them out of reach for a certain segment of the population. But that’s no longer the case — because they’ve introduced a line of affordable toys, so now all of us can partake of their many pleasures.

From the new dual-motor vibrator to the slim smoothie vibrator and the curved G-spot vibrator, JJ’s new line of toys are similar to their higher-end products, but they’re all priced at $59 and under.

The first thrusting sex toy

Not all vibrators vibrate, and that brings us to the Game of Throne-esquely named Stronic Eins. (Doesn’t that sound like it could be Stannis’ long-lost brother?)

This sex toy actually thrusts — like a penis. If you like to use a dildo in a thrusting motion to mimic the experience of penetrative sex, this toy might be for you. This toy is silicone-based and body-safe. It’s USB-rechargeable, like a multitude of sex toys that have come on the market in the last few years. Many toy companies have attempted to design “hands-free” toys in recent years, including the Stronic. Although you might love the thrusting sensation, it might be a bit challenging to go all “look ma, no hands” with this toy. But if you prefer vaginal stimulation to clitoral, it might just be for you. Here’s a more in-depth review.

All hail the first feminist sex toy for partnered or solo sex: The Eva

This funny-looking toy from Dame Products is truly and successfully hands-free, and well worth it. Don’t be put off by its weird blue beetle appearance — it works as promised. It’s also USB-rechargeable and made of body-friendly silicone. It has three speeds, so you can find your sweet spot. The Eva is meant to rest on your clitoris, with the wings tucked into your labia, so that it stays in place. Although it’s designed to provide women with clitoral stimulation during penetrative sex (from which 70 percent of us typically cannot achieve orgasm), it also works for hands-free solo sex — just lie back and let the Eva do its thing. Founded by Alex and Janet, the Eva was initially crowd-funded on Indiegogo, and it retails for $105. Of all the new toys I’ve come across, this one is my fave.

Attention boy moms: Holly Madison may be your knight in shining armor

$

The thought of letting a doctor cut a piece of your newborn son’s brand-new, scrumptious little body isn’t something any new mom wants to dwell on, but if — like more than 50 percent of newborn boys in the U.S. — circumcision is part of the plan for your baby son, you gotta put on a brave face throughout the snipping.

More: There's something really fishy about these moms' ultrasound photos

Or do you? We're wondering if Holly Madison has the answer.

The former star of The Girls Next Door has a 3-year-old daughter, Rainbow Aurora, and is seven months pregnant with her first son. Circumcision (the removal of the foreskin from the penis) is clearly an issue for Madison; when asked recently what her greatest concern about adding a son to her family is, she didn’t hesitate: "Circumcision!"

Her solution, we have to admit, is a pretty good one. She’s going to leave the entire thing to her husband, Pasquale Rotella. "You have to do it! You have to handle that!" she tells him whenever the subject comes up.

More: Telling my 5-year-old about sexual consent was just as awful as it sounds

Circumcision rates have dropped in the U.S. in recent years, but there is still one procedure every 30 seconds (over 1 million procedures each year). No longer considered to be as normal as a vaccination — which was the case until the late 1970s — circumcision has become a controversial topic. Whether parents choose circumcision for religious, cultural or medical reasons, there's a growing body of experts (and parents) who don't support the practice.

Parenting is a team effort (when there are two parents, that is), and the quickest path toward familial bliss is to play to your strengths. Moms, if you can't bear to make the decision of whether or not to have that little guy circumcised, we reckon it’s perfectly reasonable to let his daddy handle this particular decision.

More: There are photos of a breech baby's vaginal birth and they're incredible

Yes, we’re going to play the woman card. Let the big dude with the penis tough it out with the little guy with the penis, and be there to provide the cuddles and care for them both.

The Real Housewives should watch the Sister Wives argue and take some notes

It may feel like summer, but it's Thanksgiving on Sister Wives — and the Brown wives are struggling to make nice while they put together a family meal. In a preview for Sunday's episode courtesy of Us Weekly, we see Meri and Janelle Brown get very passive-aggressive over their DIY decorations for Thanksgiving. It's like the ladies from Real Housewives if they were on their best behavior. No table flipping, but there's definitely still a lot of animosity in the air.

More: Sister Wives' Kody Brown reportedly bullying his wives

Although Meri and Janelle Brown decided to plan their Thanksgiving decorations together, Janelle is thrown when she stops by and finds that Meri has gone ahead and created the entire look for the decorations without her. "I can feel myself disengaging from the project because I'm like OK, well, it's done," says Janelle. She tries to be on her best behavior with Meri nonetheless, telling her she'll help and reminding her that she's trying as hard as she can with her limited skill set.

More: Sister Wives' Kody Brown needs to stop being so clueless about Meri

"Janelle really has been a self-proclaimed... not a decorator," says Meri. "I think with her coming over and seeing all this stuff, it's just overwhelming to her." That's a very nice way of saying "I did a much better job here," don't you think? Teresa Giudice would be proud.

Sister Wives star Meri Brown went online in search of companionship. What she found instead was someone who took advantage of her.

More: Sister Wives' Meri's in relationship counseling, but not with Kody Brown

Last year, Brown opened up about finding herself in an online relationship with a woman who had pretended to be a man named Sam. Of course, Brown's catfishing scandal is not new, and it left her family angry and her fans completely shocked. But she's now ready to open up about her awful experience and reveal even more intimate details about the relationship and how she got duped.

In an exclusive clip from the hour-long special Catching the Catfisher, Brown reveals that the person she was speaking to "sounded like a guy with a Southern accent." And they connected really easily. "We laughed a lot. It was easy to connect with him, just because there was so much in common. Looking back at it now, I know exactly why there was so much in common."

Brown didn't realize that she was being lured in and how it's surprisingly easy to look past details that don't add up.

Things escalated quickly. "He was very, very flirty with me. And I have guy friends and I am a little bit flirty too," Brown says. There was a lot of emotion involved, too.

"He was like, 'I really feel like I love you.' And I'm like, 'Yeah, but you know I'm married. I mean, nothing's happening.'"

More: Meri Brown's catfisher is still releasing voicemails & making her life miserable

Brown reveals that she felt an "affection" toward this person in the beginning. Then she details how it all started to become fishy and there was some excuse as to why "Sam" couldn't meet up with her, and instead she met his best friend, Lindsay.

"I was not comfortable around her," Brown admits. "I just got the creeps from her. But I'm sitting here trying to be nice to her because this is a friend of his."

And things took a sinister turn when Lindsay started threatening Brown, saying, "'I will ruin your life. And I will ruin your family.'"

Charlize Theron & Sean Penn have an awkward day at Cannes

Charlize Theron wants to quit Sean Penn so badly, but she can't — not while there's a terrible movie to promote.

The formerly engaged couple split almost a year ago, but they've been thrown together again and again since the breakup to promote their film The Last Face, directed by Penn and starring Theron. Their latest run-in happened in Cannes and, well, it doesn't appear that their relationship has thawed at all.

The pair did not stand anywhere near each other, with Theron's co-stars Adèle Exarchopoulos and Javier Bardem making sure there was plenty of distance, and they did not interact during the photo call. They also sat separately during the press conference that followed.

Penn kept a sourpuss look on his face throughout the day, which may have had less to do with the presence of his ex and more to do with the viscerally terrible reaction his film received at the Cannes Film Festival.

More: Charlize Theron finally addresses her unexpected split from Sean Penn

The movie is so bad that Cannes audience members alternately booed at the screen and laughed at what were supposed to be highly dramatic moments.

Calling it the worst film of Penn's career, IndieWire's Eric Kohn wrote, "The narrative panders on every level: It's a supercilious attempt to bemoan the hardships of neglected people under the guise of whiny romantic fluff."

The Guardian's Benjamin Lee gave it one star, calling the movie "an extended Band Aid video, shoddily assembled to be screened at galas filled with the guilty elite sipping champagne while frowning at close-ups of tearful orphans."

But the best — or worst, depending on how you look at it — comments were reserved for Twitter.

7 rules for braising the luscious short ribs of your dreams

$

Short ribs are a super-inexpensive cut of meat that you can dress up for a dinner party or an indulgent weekend feast. Follow these rules, and your short ribs will be perfect — your guests will come running back for more (we won’t steer you wrong, we promise). You’ll get moist, flavorful and delicious short ribs every time.

Rule 1: Sear the meat

Season your short ribs with salt and pepper, and sear them on all sides in a cast-iron skillet. This allows the meat to develop a nice crust and great flavor. Allow the short ribs to get a nice color without burning them or cooking them all the way through.

More: Red wine-braised short ribs are an elegant but easy meal for date night

Rule 2: Cook your vegetables separately

Some recipes will advise that you sear your short ribs, add them to an oven-safe dish with your raw veggies and liquids and then bake. You shouldn’t do this. The best way to make short ribs is to sear your meat first and then sear your veggies in the same pot afterward, which will allow your veggies to also get a nice color and caramelization. No one likes mushy vegetables, so this is your best option.

Once you’ve finished braising your meat on all sides, remove it from the pot, let it rest, and add in your chopped onions, celery and carrots. Make sure to stir your veggies frequently over medium-high heat; this will prevent them from burning.

Rule 3: Always deglaze the pot

Once the vegetables are caramelized, add in your braising liquid (this can be a combination of stock and wine), and scrape the bottom of the pot with a wooden spoon. There’s great flavor at the bottom of the pot that will enhance the flavor of the dish — this is a step you shouldn’t miss.

Rule 4: Don’t add too much liquid

Make sure you’re not adding too much liquid to the pot. The short ribs should not be submerged in the liquid, because then the liquid will just boil, which you don’t want. Make sure the short ribs will be covered only halfway. If you feel the liquid is reducing too much, feel free to add more.

More: The basics of braising meat

Rule 5: Let the liquid simmer before putting it in the oven

When you add your meat to the liquid, bring it to a simmer before putting it into a 325-degree F oven to bake.

Rule 6: Don’t overcook the meat

Let the short ribs simmer in the oven for roughly 2-1/2 hours, until it is fork tender. Leaving it in the oven any longer doesn’t make it fall off the bone any more easily.

More: Simple braising techniques and recipes

Rule 7: Jazz up your short ribs with more veggies

Onions, carrots and spices are just the beginning. Jazz up your short ribs by adding in potatoes, mushrooms or greens. Add the vegetables when there is 45 minutes of cook time left, making sure to crack the lid a little so the short ribs can breathe.

If you follow these seven rules, you’ll have amazing short ribs every time.

Shark Tank debuts product that no one should ever, ever actually use

After several very inspiring pitches, Shark Tank ended its latest season with one of the show's most dramatic standoffs yet. The Sharks got nastier than they have in a long time, but on this particular occasion, the nastiness was well deserved.

More: Shark Tank is better when the Sharks offer advice, not insults

Entrepreneur Maneesh Sethi's pitch seemed dubious from the very beginning. His product, Pavlok, promises to break bad habits with the power of a shock to the wrist. The goal is to train the reptilian brain to associate problematic behaviors with a slight but very uncomfortable electric stimulus.

Pavlok on Shark Tank
Image: ABC

The concept is modeled, of course, on aversion conditioning. While there is certainly merit to the idea that a habit can be broken if the brain associates it with a negative stimulus, that doesn't necessarily work in practice with Pavlok. Users have to actually think about the behavior and zap themselves in response, but many of the habits the product seeks to correct are so ingrained that people's awareness of them just isn't there. Also, even if people do catch themselves engaging in problematic behaviors, there's no guarantee that they will actually follow through with shocking themselves.

More: Shark Tank's Sharks go overboard with health product critiques

The Sharks were skeptical about consumers' willingness to zap themselves, but they were even more concerned with Sethi's apparent lack of evidence. He seemed to be basing his product almost entirely on studies conducted by other parties several decades ago. Aversion conditioning may prove effective in certain contexts, but extensive clinical trials are needed before Sethi can guarantee that his product is more than a pain-inducing piece of plastic.

Mark Cuban
Image: ABC

Several Sharks were disappointed with the pitch, but none more than Mark Cuban, who quickly launched into a long-winded rant about all the ways Sethi's product was a scam. Cuban even referred to Sethi as a con artist. His thinking was clearly reflected on Twitter, where users bashed Sethi for his alleged attempt at scamming vulnerable individuals. Kevin O'Leary — who, shockingly, made an offer — was represented among the Pavlok-bashing Twitter users.

I've seen a lot of bad pitches on Shark Tank but few as cringe-worthy as Sethi's for Pavlok. Even without the slightly scammy feel of the product, I would have been put off by Sethi's general demeanor. This isn't exactly the uplifting end to the season I was hoping for, but it was certainly entertaining!

Watch out dog owners, algal blooms could spell big trouble for your dog

Summer is fast approaching, the sun is out and it's time for my dog and me to start up an exercise routine again. We could both use the movement after a winter spent bundled up together on the couch, so we grabbed his leash and my old tennis shoes and headed out to our favorite spot.

We were both relieved to see that the pond in our local park had returned to its former glory after being drained and treated late last summer. Before that happened, it had turned a nasty, pea-soup-looking color and had a thin, foamy film coating the surface.

More: Top 10 longest-living dog breeds

The water was not clear like it should have been. We had no view of the fish swimming just below the surface. My dog, Max, didn't seem to notice a difference. He pulled on his leash, eager for me to release him to chase ducks and dive into the cool water.

But I didn't.

Max was none too pleased with me, but honestly, that water looked gross and I wasn't in the mood to give him a bath when we got home. We headed over to a wooded area and went for a little hike instead.

Turns out, I made a good decision, but not because of the stink that came with that water. That water could have made him really sick.

What are harmful algal blooms?

That nasty water was actually full of something called algal blooms. After long periods of warm, calm weather, bodies of freshwater become vulnerable to harmful algal blooms, toxic overgrowths of bacteria that can quickly take over ponds, rivers and lakes. These HABs can be harmful to pets, people, wild animals and livestock, so it's important to be aware of what it looks like and keep your pets clear of suspicious areas.

Water infested with harmful algal blooms may take on an artificial-looking green color, and the surface may be foamy, or be coated in a thin layer that looks like spilled paint. The water may take on a blue-green color, or even occasionally take on a brown or red tint, depending on the circumstances and level of infestation.

More: Spring is here and so are the fleas — are you and your pets ready?

Though the toxins aren't always present in the algal blooms, there's no real way to know without testing, so avoidance is probably your best bet,

If toxins are present, the water is harmful not only if ingested, but if you (or your pet) are exposed to it at all. This includes any skin contact. Dogs have been known to eat clumps of the scum that wash up on shore, so give a wide berth to any iffy-looking water, and be sure to wash your dog's feet thoroughly when you leave — even if you don't think he got too close.

Symptoms of HAB exposure in dogs

The amount and severity of the symptoms of HAB exposure can vary according to the type of toxin, the amount of exposure and the breed, size and general health of your dog.

If your dog has been exposed, keep an eye out for these symptoms:

 • Diarrhea
 • Bloody stool
 • Repeated vomiting of green liquid
 • Loss of appetite
 • Yellowing of eyes and gums
 • Dark urine
 • No urine output
 • Abdominal swelling
 • Stumbling
 • Loss of coordination
 • Seizures
 • Paralysis
 • Trouble breathing
 • Drooling
 • Rashes and hives

Symptoms of exposure to HABs can start to present within minutes to hours of exposure, and are often deadly if left untreated. There is no at-home treatment or antidote for HAB exposure, so it's imperative that you contact professional help as soon as exposure occurs. If you suspect your dog was exposed to HABs and is experiencing any symptoms, contact your veterinarian or local pet poison hotline as soon as possible.

I let my high-school son’s girlfriend move in and I'd do it again

$

0

I’ve come to terms with the fact that I am not a traditional mom. While I may be more lenient and liberal than many mothers I know, I never thought that one day my son, who is still in high school, would move his girlfriend into our home.

Yet, that’s exactly what happened, and I couldn’t be happier.

More: My son wanted to know how to make his girlfriend feel good, so I told him

My son Jared is a high school senior. He met his girlfriend Jessica at the beginning of his sophomore year, when she was a senior. The year and a half age gap didn’t bother me, but I worried that once Jessica started college, she would break up with my son after meeting a boy her own age.

She proved me wrong when she began her freshman year at the local community college, and the two remained as committed to one another as ever. As their relationship progressed, so did my adoration of the woman my son chose to love.

Jessica was patient and kind and knew when to push my son to do better and when to praise him for his efforts. I genuinely liked her, which was a shocker since I was positive I was supposed to dislike the girls my sons dated.

Shortly after their two-year anniversary, my son shared with me something personal. Jessica was struggling at home. Her mother, he said, had been battling a drug addiction and for the past year, had been “borrowing” money from Jessica that was never returned. To make matters worse, her parents were constantly fighting with one another, and Jessica, being the oldest child, was left caring for and comforting the younger children in their home.

The next time Jessica came to our house, I asked her about it.

“Things are OK,” she said quietly.

“What does OK mean to you?” I asked.

As Jessica’s eyes filled with tears, she told me that her mother had a cocaine addiction and wasn’t working any more, causing a financial burden. She shared with me how her stepdad and mother would fight with one another, and how sometimes those fights lasted for days on end. She also told me how claustrophobic it felt living with her family, which included her two sisters and two stepbrothers, all in a two-bedroom apartment.

More: Having my 10-year-old's eyebrows waxed doesn't make me superficial

“I just think I need some space,” she told me.

Later that night, after Jessica had gone back home, my son begged me to let her move in with us. “I’m really worried about her, Mom,” he said. I couldn’t blame him. After talking with Jessica, I was worried about her too.

My husband and I talked about the possibility of moving Jessica into our home, but we weren’t sure it was the best thing to do for our son.

“He’s too young to live like he’s already married,” my husband said.

As the weeks passed and the tension in her home kept mounting, it became harder and harder to do nothing. Finally, shortly before Christmas, my husband and I agreed that she could move in with us, with some clear boundaries established. When Jessica stayed over for the holiday, we let her know that our home was always open to her if she needed a place to move to, but that it was ultimately her decision to make. Two days after Christmas, Jessica called us and asked if we could help her move her things to our house.

As was expected, her mother was angry with us.

“You’re stealing my daughter!” she yelled. I embraced her mother and told her that I could never steal her daughter and let her know that she was always welcome to come visit her at our home. When we moved Jessica in, we made it clear that she wasn’t moving in with our son. We emptied out our spare bedroom and for the first time in Jessica’s life, she had her very own space.

While I know that my son and Jessica have already become intimate with each other, I let them know that there was a curfew for when they needed to be in their own bedrooms and that as long as my son was a minor, there would be no sleeping together.

I also let Jessica know that she was a part of our family, which meant that she would help us clean up the house and after herself. For Jessica, it was an easy exchange. She no longer had to deal with her money being taken from her wallet without her consent or the loud screams and door slams of her parents fighting with one another.

More: My child's a lesbian, and she has every right to go to church

The transition was bumpy, but not impossible. My son and Jessica had to establish their own new boundaries since they were now neighbors and housemates, and not just together on the weekends like before. As would be expected, there have been occasional awkward moments having my son and his girlfriend under the same roof, but we deal with them as they come and have discussions with our son and Jessica when the need arises.

Over the past four months, we’ve come to really enjoy having Jessica in our home. She’s helpful and kind, and has grown tremendously since moving in with us. Her relationship with her parents is much better, too, as they have worked on their own issues and treasure the time they spend with their daughter. Her mom even apologized to me for her initial anger, and told me that she realizes how happy her daughter is now.

Would I advocate parents letting their teenager’s girlfriend or boyfriend move in with them? Not necessarily, but I do think every situation is different and deserves careful consideration based on what’s right for each family, not what other people think. We know we made the right decision for our family — and although it's not traditional, we wouldn't change a thing.

Kim Kardashian blasts Rob Kardashian & Chyna for not supporting the family

Kim Kardashian isn't opposed to welcoming Blac Chyna (aka Angela Kardashian) to the family — as long as she steps up and starts acting like a Kardashian. In a recent clip from Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kim blasted brother Rob Kardashian for allowing more drama to seep into their inner circle, thanks to his pregnant better half, Chyna.

Even though she is officially a Kardashian now, Chyna has, in the past, used her social media fame to bash the Kardashian and Jenner family. Kylie Jenner was the numero uno victim of her rage, which is perfectly understandable given the web of crazy that was created when a then-underage Kylie began dating Tyga, with whom Chyna has a baby boy (Kylie and Tyga have since split up).

All water under the bridge, according to Kim, who is willing to move on — but warned Rob that he and Chyna need to do the same. "I never get pissed and I'm so for you being happy, but whatever Chyna and Kylie and all the drama that they have together, like, that's for them to work out," Kim told Rob over the phone. "Mom has bent over backwards doing all this stuff. Mom is pissed. When you start publicly bashing my sister and mom, that's not cool. This is just unnecessary. This is not what our family does. Like, there's way too much drama, so many haters in the world, we don't need this from our own inside circle."

That last bit about disrespecting Kris Jenner takes aim at Chyna and Rob for making fun of Kris for stocking their house (on her dime) with foods like quinoa and sorbet. Chyna can be heard cracking jokes about healthy foods like oatmeal, which isn't a crime — but I can't blame Kim for wanting Chyna and Rob to cool it for a bit with their family rants.

Kim is proving to be one of Rob and Chyna's biggest supporters and allies, but that doesn't mean her loyalty isn't to her family first. In the same upcoming episode of KUWTK, Kim admits she understands why Chyna felt such intense animosity toward her family before settling down with Rob — but that her loyalty to Kylie comes before any empathy she feels toward a family outsider.

"I understand that Kylie dating Tyga completely broke Chyna's heart," Kim said. "I feel for her in that situation. Was it uncomfortable for me when Kylie and Tyga started to date? Absolutely, because Chyna was my friend. But I had no choice but to take my sister's side. That's my sister."

The big question now: Will Chyna agree to fall into line with the Kardashian family? Or are they going to have to welcome Chyna and Rob — just the way they are?
