Dance Moms' Areana Lopez overshadows the Zieglers' exit with emotional solo

Tonight marked Maddie and Mackenzie Ziegler's very last episode on Dance Moms, and while the show has been preparing us for this all season, it was hard not to get choked up when the girls danced with their team for the very last time. Surprisingly enough, however, the emotional punch of their departure paled in comparison to another deeply emotional moment: Areana Lopez's gorgeous solo.

Areana Lopez
Image: Lifetime

Meaningful routines are nothing new on Dance Moms, and plenty of performances have left fans teary-eyed. But Lopez's dance was especially touching, as it was a tribute to her brother. Early in the episode, Sari Lopez (Areana's mother) explained that her son had open heart surgery just three months after he was born and, a few days later, went into cardiac arrest. He was dead for nearly an hour, and while he was eventually revived, he is now unable to walk or talk. Sari added that, as hard as all of this had been on her family, her daughter's dancing ability made it easier to bear.

More: Jessalynn Siwa's trash talk on Dance Moms was out of line

It was touching to see the adorable mini dancers rally around Sari as she got all emotional in the studio, but it was even better to see Areana support both her mom and brother onstage. Her solo would have been amazing even without the backstory, but the context made it that much better. She has a lot of potential as a dancer and, tonight, she showed that she has what it takes to lead a new generation of little ALDC dancers.

Not only did Areana's story line bring out the best in her and her mom, it also brought out the best in Abby Lee Miller. For all her faults, Abby really does care about the girls. Sari was touched by the dance teacher's willingness to create such a special dance for her daughter.

More: Trashing Dance Moms' Kendall Vertes is not OK

It's never easy to see a cast member (or two) leave, but based on Areana's latest performance, the ALDC will be just fine without the Ziegler girls. No, they aren't exactly replaceable, but there are plenty of other young dancers who will shine onstage.

Nobody tell Jill Duggar she just did something feminist

More: Anna Duggar's family steps in for a Josh Duggar intervention

Before you come at me, let me first say that I don't think Jill Duggar is a feminist — and Jill herself would definitely not say she is a feminist. I'm pretty sure that word is next to "pants," "premarital sex" and "college" under "Things to Avoid at All Costs" in the Duggar handbook for women. However, even people who don't think they're feminists do feminist stuff sometimes, which they will probably never recognize as feminist. In Jill's case, the feminist thing she didn't know she did was convene a meeting of local women in the Central American community where she and Derick are living and working as missionaries. On the season finale of Counting On, which promised to be "life-changing" and in no way delivered, Jill said that it was important to bring women together to share things they had in common, like being mothers, and to see that all women have the same struggles. Unfortunately, the conference did not culminate in a shower of sex-positive literature, affordable health care or clean water (other things that are feminist), but instead the Duggar sisters singing.

More: Even Jessa Duggar's workout picture has sparked a backlash

This isn't even the first feminist thing Jill has done. (But still, don't tell her.) She's a midwife, which theoretically means she's well versed in women's bodies, reproductive health and empowering women through the birth experience. Although she might not actually be very good at it, she did engage with a practice that's deeply rooted in female power and decision-making. That's pretty feminist, and the fact that the Duggars sanction such behavior is kind of a big deal, even though they wouldn't let Jill help certain kinds of people. Again, the Duggars aren't feminists, but it is still possible to do feminist things and to reap the benefits of feminism.

There's been a lot of talk lately about which married Duggar daughter will be the next to produce child No. 2, whether it be through adoption or pregnancy. Jessa and Ben's son is 4 months old and Jessa isn't pregnant. Jill and Derick have been in Central America for four months and Israel is now a year old, and Jill isn't pregnant, as far as we know. Do you see where I'm going with this? Why isn't anyone pregnant? Is someone exercising some kind of birth control? Not the contraceptive pill kind or some other product of the devil but the natural family planning sort? Also brought to you by feminism?

Jill and her sisters would certainly contextualize all of these behaviors within their own world view, the one that they were raised with. There is a lesson here, though, and that is that even those who would distance themselves from feminism and its ideas still live in a world where it does them a great service.

Southern Charm's Landon Clements is the last person I'd want to plan my birthday party

$

On this week’s Southern Charm, Landon Clements appointed herself party planner for Shep Rose’s big 3-7. Along the way, though, it seems that Landon forgot it was Shep’s birthday and was under the impression she was actually planning her own party — or that of a child. The theme: disco roller-skating, complete with balloons, cupcakes, childhood photos and no booze.

“Does she even know me at all?” Shep wondered.

More: Enough with slut-shaming Kathryn Dennis, Southern Charm fans

Leading up to the party, Landon seemed over the moon with all the planning that went into carrying out such an event. “I love roller-skating so much!” she proclaimed. Shep, on the other hand, was less than thrilled.

“Only losers roller-skate,” Shep said, as he got ready for his own party. “We used to kick the shit out of people who did that... and now I’ve become what I despise.”

Landon may know Shep, but it’s obvious that this party wasn’t for Shep; it was for Landon. And we, the viewers, aren't the only ones to whom this is painfully obvious. Shep knew it and Craig couldn’t help but call Landon out on it.

More: Hey, Thomas Ravenel, maybe don't make jokes about assaulting women

“Landon just wanted people to come roller-skating with her, so she used your birthday as an excuse,” he said.

To add insult to injury, Shep was the only one on time, while Landon was fashionably late like the guest of honor would be.

While the party planning was underway, Shep was adamant about one thing — he wanted Kathryn Dennis to be invited. Landon not only ignored that request but also lied and acted as though she had invited Kathryn right up until she was caught red-handed. That is, until Shep called Kathryn himself, wondering why she hadn't shown. Kathryn, clearly upset by the dis, let him have it — and, in turn, Shep let Landon have it.

More: Kathryn Dennis isn't a gold digger just because she wants a house

It's safe to say the party was an absolute disaster.

This seems to be a clear case of having a selfish friend who gets so caught up in something that she forgets it’s not about her. We’ve all had a friend at one time or another who behaves like this — maybe we have even unconsciously done something like this to a friend ourselves.

The thing is, whether you are a party planner and/or host, people like Landon need to be reminded that it isn’t actually a party for them. Maybe she should have taken Whitney’s suggestion of going to a steakhouse and strip club instead.

Do you think Landon acted like a bad friend to Shep?

Sawyer Fredericks' return to The Voice was Season 10's most divisive moment

Sawyer Fredericks won The Voice by a mile in Season 8, just as Jordan Smith did last season and just as Alisan Porter is expected to for Season 10. But a contestant can win the show and still cultivate a very vocal group of detractors. This was certainly the case for Fredericks, who many viewers maintain won because of his charm and beautiful head of hair, and not because of his singing ability. While everybody pretty much universally loves Jordan Smith, Fredericks remains a very divisive figure, as evidenced during tonight's brief return to The Voice.

More: Alisan Porter dominates The Voice with one of the most emotional songs yet

The chief goal of Fredericks' visit was not to create controversy, but rather, to promote his new album. He performed his single "4 Pockets," and while he looked right at home on stage, he just didn't capture the magic of some of this season's best and brightest contestants. In fact, his performance was quite dull compared to last night's powerhouse of an episode. The problem may have been the song rather than his voice, but that doesn't bode well for the future of his album.

More: America got it wrong with outrageous elimination on The Voice

I'm certainly not the only person disappointed by Fredericks' lackluster return to The Voice. Several unhappy viewers spoke out about the Season 8 champ on Twitter. Their rather mean-spirited commentary made my mild disappointment seem like pro-Fredericks accolades.

Fans hate Sawyer on The Voice

As always, Fredericks still has ardent supporters, so it wasn't much of a surprise to also see several positive responses to his latest performance. Say what you want about his musical style, it's clear that Fredericks knows how to garner viewer support.

Despite what the haters claim, Fredericks is not completely devoid of talent. He has a calming voice and a nice stage presence. However, his appearance on The Voice was definitely not the exciting homecoming I anticipated. Hopefully, the other songs on his album are more enjoyable than "4 Pockets." Otherwise, I fear Fredericks will be just another Voice champ with a lackluster career.

Below Deck: Mediterranean's Tiffany Copeland should get off her high horse

Below Deck: Mediterranean has arrived, and already tension is mounting. A few of the show's cast members are a bit lackadaisical on the job and, needless to say, they aren't getting on that well with their yacht's more ambitious crew members.

More: Below Deck: Mediterranean crew crosses the line of professionalism

Right off the bat, Jen Riservato made a poor impression when she failed to get up on time and attempted to make Bobby Giancola cover for her. She got a talking to from her superior and immediately lashed out at Giancola for not protecting her. She's by no means the only crew member with a bad attitude, for, although she committed the ultimate no-no by sleeping in, one of the inside employees was even more annoying: Tiffany Copeland.

Tiffany Copeland

More: 7 reasons Kate Chastain makes Below Deck worth watching

Copeland has a very impressive résumé — she used to work as a marine biologist. Now, however, she's working her way up in the yachting world. On some level, she recognizes that she needs to gain familiarity with a variety of positions before she can achieve her ultimate goal of becoming a captain. However, she clearly views some jobs as beneath her. This was evident the moment she began chatting with chief stew Hannah Ferrier. When Ferrier asked Copeland about whether she preferred working as a deckhand to inside stew jobs, Copeland made it abundantly clear which aspect of yachting she found more fulfilling.

More: Below Deck's Rocky Dakota claims that Eddie Lucas still loves her

Copeland's admission wouldn't have been a big deal if she'd stopped there. After all, everybody has preferences. However, she later admitted that she would much rather clean up bird poop outside than dust the yacht's interior. Her disinterest was also evident when she turned in early for the night, leaving more work for the rest of the crew. As expected, Ferrier — who works super hard to ensure a perfect experience for her guests — was not pleased.

One could argue that Copeland's dismissive attitude is just a result of editing. However, her attitude seemed just as negative on Twitter as it was on television.

Cleaning up after yacht guests may not be exciting, but it's still an important job. Regardless of her previous employment, Copeland needs to give her new position and her fellow employees the respect they deserve. A good leader recognizes the contributions of all crew members, and if Copeland intends to be a captain one day, she needs to take her current job seriously.

Sofía Vergara finally gives the world an update on Joe Manganiello

It’s good news from Sofía Vergara. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Modern Family actress finally spoke out about her husband Joe Manganiello’s condition, saying that he’s “doing great!” This comes after three weeks of waiting to hear his status and if he was OK. She sure knows how to build the suspense.

More: 7 details from Joe Manganiello and Sofía Vergara's glamorous wedding weekend

A few weeks ago the actor was rushed to the hospital and given emergency surgery, and we know now that luckily everything went great. Unfortunately, Vergara didn’t go into what happened to Manganiello, so we’re still not sure what put him in the hospital. She avoided the question, only saying, “He’s OK. He had a little problem, but now he’s good.”

Some have reported that the actor’s appendix burst, but since no one has confirmed it, we can’t say for sure. We do know that just before his surgery, he was set to play a role in an eight-episode drama on the History Channel about SEAL Team Six, but dropped out suddenly due to physical restraints. If you’ve ever seen Magic Mike, you know that there’s not a lot of physical restrictions Manganiello has, so it leads us to believe it is something going on internally.

More: Eye candy! Topless Joe Manganiello covers Muscle & Fitness

The good news is, whatever it is, he’s doing well and in good spirits. A lot of his great recovery is probably due to the fact that Vergara is the one taking care of him. I imagine he’s soaking up every minute of her nursing him back to health.

More: Sofía Vergara opens up about having babies with Joe Manganiello

It’s unlikely that he’ll start work again on the drama, but we hope that whatever put him in the hospital in the first place has been taken care of so he can get back to work soon. Get well soon, Joe!

Will Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani have any onstage chemistry?

$

It’s official — we’re getting a Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani duet! Shelton confirmed on his Twitter that he will be performing the pair’s duet on next week’s episode of The Voice.

He tweeted, "SOOO.... I'm performing next week on @NBCTheVoice. I'm performing with @gwenstefani. We're performing a song off my album we wrote together.” Fans of the country singer and the show are very eager to see the two perform. It will be especially telling to see what kind of chemistry Shelton and Stefani have onstage because, in the past, it’s been a great indicator of how happy he is in his relationship.

More: Blake Shelton's comments about being single worry Gwen Stefani fans

Back in 2005, Shelton and his ex-wife, Miranda Lambert, sang a cover of the song “You’re the Reason God Made Oklahoma” and it has been noted by Shelton as the moment he knew he was falling in love with Lambert. Throughout the performance, you can see Shelton lovingly stare at Lambert while she sang her parts of the song. It’s going to be hard for the audience not to compare that moment to his duet with Stefani next week.

More: 9 ways Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton are totally different people

Of course, Shelton has no doubt that Stefani will do amazing during their performance. Even back in November, insiders who had heard the two sing together noted how pretty and natural she sounded on the country song. Stefani has also been performing for decades with current boyfriends, ex-boyfriends and even her husband at the time. She knows how to put on a killer show no matter who she’s singing with!

More: Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani's relationship takes a road trip

I’m personally still a little bit skeptical of their romance (and whether or not it’s all just for TV ratings and record sales), but I’ll definitely tune in next week to see whether or not it’s the real thing.

I want to hear what you think! Are they going to kill the performance or fall flat?

A beginner's guide to herbs and how the heck they promote good health

$
0
0

It seems like everyone is talking about natural healing solutions these days, including herbal remedies that some say can either replace pharmaceuticals altogether or serve as supplements to support the benefits they deliver. If you're completely unfamiliar with herbs and their abilities and are starting from scratch, I should warn you: This is an extensive field, there's a great deal to learn about and it isn't easy to sum up herbal remedies in a few paragraphs.

But let's try. First of all, what, exactly, are herbal remedies — and are they legit?

"Herbal remedies are commonly used in Asian and other countries worldwide," says Angie Yin, an acupuncturist and oriental medicine practitioner located in Bellevue, Washington. "Clinic-wise, we use herbs to treat a wide variety of ailments, such as upper respiratory infections, seasonal allergy, insomnia, major depression, anxiety, gastrointestinal disorders, postpartum syndrome, fertility issues, menopause and post-menopausal syndromes, and a lot more."

What does an herbalist do exactly?

If you suffer from an ailment and want to try a natural approach, Yin says a typical consultation session at a clinic would result in a diagnosis based on the holistic concepts of four major diagnosis methods and comprehensive analysis of the syndrome collected from the patient. They include:

1. Inspection of vitality, including complexion and natural skin tones, facial expressions, physique, speech, consciousness, and an overall tongue inspection. "Each vital sign means significantly in the process of differential diagnosis as each one has its own manifestation based on the theories of Traditional Chinese medicine practice," Yin says. "For instance, red tongue body with thick yellow coating indicates excess damp heat in the body, [so] we would consider using herbs that clear heat and drain dampness; whereas purple dots on the tongue indicates blood stasis. Herbs that help to promote blood circulation will be used in this particular case."

2. Auscultation of patient’s voice, rhythm of respiration, cough quality, frequency of sighs, hiccups, belching and sneezing. "For example, cough with a feeble voice indicates deficiency syndrome," Yin says. "Herbs used for this condition will be based on tonic formulas. In addition to that, olfaction of patient’s secretions and excretions is also a factor to consider. Different scents and odors emitted by the patient indicate specific syndrome and potential illness. For instance, fetid mouth odor is usually associated with excess stomach heat. We will choose herbs that clear middle burner heat to use here."

3. Patient inquiry. "[We] inquire about their medical history of current conditions and details of chief complaints," Yin says. "Inquires also include their lifestyles, typical diets, menstrual cycles, qualities of defecation and urination, as well as the accompanying sensation, and so on."

4. Testing a patient's pulse. "This method is to conclude our intake and further support medical information we have collected in the prior three methods," Yin says.

More: 13 awesome garden herbs that double as health supplements

Herbs are most effective and potent when kept in their original forms as raw and unprocessed. But there are many different options when choosing how to take herbal remedies, and all have their own advantages, says Vanessa Nixon Klein, a traditional naturopath and wellness consultant at Herbs of Grace Healing Arts, who has experience in herbalism.

"For those new to herbs, oftentimes capsules are more familiar and convenient," Nixon Klein says. "Teas can be tasty and provide a relaxing ritual to go along with the medicine. Tinctures or extracts are easier than tea for some people but may not be as pleasant tasting. Massage oils are certainly a great method for topical application as well."

So, what kind of herbs are we talking about?

As you can imagine, the roster of herbs prescribed by a specialist is varied. But certain common herbal remedies that can improve your health tend to come up frequently in any discussion about herbal treatments.

"Adding angelica roots, dang shen, red dates and wolfberries into the [hot] drinking water can actually brighten your complexion, boost energy and vision," Yin says. "I call them essentials for women’s wellness and beauty secrets. They can prevent headaches from prolonged study and reading (perfect for students preparing [for] exams). These four herbs are also great to take during the menstrual cycle as they are all blood tonics that can ease cramps and promote blood circulation. Mint leaves are a great choice for those [who] suffer from allergic rhinitis, chronic nasal congestion and sore throat. They are very powerful in terms of opening up your congested passages. Last but not least, honey-coated licorice roots are often used as a mediator to harmonize and coordinate with rest of the herbs in most tonic formulas."

Nixon Klein says some of the most common herbs she uses with clients include culinary herbs such as garlic and ginger, as well as wild, locally harvested herbs such as plantain, dandelion and stinging nettle.

“I often blend garlic, ginger, onion, horseradish and peppers into a combination known as Fire Cider or Master Tonic that is extremely effective at preventing colds and flus as well as lessening the intensity and duration of symptoms,” Nixon Klein says. “Ginger is great for relieving upset stomach. Dandelion is a wonderful herb to assist with a spring cleanse or detox and is nourishing for the liver. Plantain has intense drawing benefits and can pull slivers and infections out of skin wounds. Stinging nettle is often used around this time of year for the relief of allergies and hay fever. These are just a few of their many uses.”

More: I was diagnosed with Parkinson's at 36

How do I get on board?

It may seem easy to stock up on herbs at your local produce store and create your own remedies at home — but both experts agree that it's important to do your research first and consider visiting a professional so that you get the most benefit from these treatments.

"The practice of herbal remedies is very versatile and formulas are custom-made and tailored to individuals only, not for everyone in the general public," Yin says. "Besides, you are not supposed to take the same formula endlessly. In other words, you need to have herbs in the formula modified once your symptoms change as the illness progresses. There are many factors involved in determining what herbs to prescribe. It is unwise to make [your] own purchases on any herbal remedies without consulting with a professional."

Why you don’t really need a wedding photographer — sorry, not sorry

$
0
0

We live in a day and age where if there isn’t photo proof of a moment, a story, a specific situation, it’s arguable that it didn’t really happen. And if that photo is uploaded to Instagram, Facebook, shared on a Pinterest board, and doesn’t get more than 50 likes, it’s also arguable that the moment or story doesn’t really matter to the internet trolls (also known as close friends and acquaintances) that make up your social media footprint.

So when it comes to figuring out what you need and what you want on the biggest and most expensive day of your life, the day you say "I do" to a person who is also vowing to stand by your side through thick and thin waistlines, it’s only right that a voice inside of you will scream, “Duh, I want to hire a professional wedding photographer, and a good one at that!”

More: How much your wedding photographer should cost

But when you’ve landed your wedding planning spaceship back down on earth and start to put dollar signs next to how much each of your wedding must-haves will cost, you may start to ask yourself, “What the heck can I cut out of my budget so that I don’t have to drag my feet into Bank of America and ask them for a loan to pay post-wedding bills?"

A wedding photographer should be something on your cut list. I know, it sounds crazy but hiring one will set you back anywhere between $2,000 and $9,000, depending on your location and the package that you fancy the most. While saying bye-bye to a professional behind one of those giant lenses may seem ludicrous to you because now you’re wondering who will take that perfectly captured first-look photo, you’d be surprised to know there are many ways to still get the photos you want to hug forever for a price that’s f-r-e-e.

1. You can go old school instead

I’m about to get real old school here. Are you ready? Two words for you: disposable cameras.

I know, I know. These things are so 1990s that you’re probably scratching your head wondering where the heck you can buy one (hint: Amazon sells everything) and your follow-up question is probably where you can get the photos developed after your wedding extravaganza (I’m a psychic, aren’t I?). The answer is most chain drug stores, like CVS or Walgreens, still print these photos for you dirt cheap and give you digitized version.

But the benefit of putting a couple of these on each table at your reception is that you can put the power of photo in the hands of your wedding guests. Guests are always taking photos during the ceremony and reception anyway.

They’ll capture parts of your wedding that a traditional photographer would never have the behind-the-scenes kind of access to.

More: Yep, now you can hire a drone to be your wedding photographer

Sure, some of these photos may make your eyes bulge when you see them (courtesy of your more open-bar loving and rowdy guests), but some may be so darling that you choose to mail it back with a thank-you card to the guest in the pic.

2. You can ask a pal or turn your family into paparazzi

For the moments you may want to Instagram or put in a frame and hang beside your LCD flat screen TV, you can ask a friend you know is going easy on the open bar or a family member who has already invested in a professional camera for their once-in-a-lifetime (emphasis on the once) trip to Europe. Arrange for them to meet you before the ceremony, or when cocktail hour begins, to take a couple of candid shots and ask them to be front row during the ceremony for the ooey-gooey love photos and moments of fresh marital bliss. You can also put the maid of honor and best man in charge of getting ready photos simply using their iPhone. These aren't flip phone camera we're talking about anymore and we rely on it for everything else, right?

3. You’ll never look at 95 percent of your wedding photos again

It’s true. With a professional photographer, you’ll spend a chunk of your wedding smiling for their camera, another chunk of your post-wedding time scrolling through 1,000 photos and picking the top 50 for a wedding album and zero chunk of your life ever looking at them again. Maybe you’ll pull out your wedding album once every 12 years or share the link to your digital wedding photo album, once, to 12 people, but the truth is, professional wedding photography is an investment that doesn’t bring much of a return in the future.

4. You can DIY — selfie style

We are officially known as Generation Y but really, we should be known as Generation selfie. We’ve all mastered skills at taking our own photos, slapping them with an Instagram filter, and feeling like they are worthy of being added to a photo database at Getty Images.

More: Couple's wedding photos go viral for all the wrong reasons

While wedding dresses and tuxedos don't have selfie stick pouches on them yet, and carrying one of those things around may make your own personal wedding vibe feel like you’re getting married at Disney World in line to ride Splash Mountain. So I’m not advising you invest in a selfie stick, or two. But if there’s a moment you want to capture, there’s nothing wrong with taking out your iPhone 5c, flipping the camera, and capturing the goofy, yet love-filled look on both you and fiancé's face.

5. Staged photos may make you feel awkward

After spending years looking at professional wedding photos suffocate my Facebook newsfeed, I’ve begun to think that all these photos are exactly same, just the faces of the couple are different. It’s always the same pose, the same facial expression and the same arm placed here while the groom’s hand is placed there.

My problem with these kinds of photos is less that they photocopies of one another and more that they are totally and completely awkward. You can see it in the couples' eyes, in their body language. They look like they are playing a game of Twister, wearing their wedding’s best. Their eyes are screaming, “When is this over? I just want to go down a glass of overpriced Champagne and a more upscale version of pigs in a blanket?"

Will you miss having your face posed in these formulaic wedding photos? No, never. You’ll be glad you don’t have to sort through 450 of these photos, picking only one or two that you feel safe sharing with the world, while you take the others and triple delete them off your computer and internet browsing history, for fear that people will discover your secret, which happens to be universal: You have no idea how to smize (smile with your eyes) and that is OK.

Blanch your broccoli with the love it deserves

Blanching broccoli is a handy way to prepare it for a variety of dishes or even for freezing. But if you do it wrong, you could end up with a bowl of mush. Skip the mush, and enjoy cooked broccoli that's bright and firm.

More: One smart way to make clean eating easier

As with all veggies, though, it starts with choosing the right specimen. You'll want to buy heads that have a nice, green color all over, with no big spots of yellow or brown. Pick it up, and squeeze the crown (the florets) gently. It shouldn't be too soft or limp. The freshest broccoli has florets that are tightly arranged and spring back after squeezing. When you find the right match, you're ready to take it home and blanch that bad boy.

Lisa Vanderpump's husband has to stop disrespecting the other housewives

$

During the third part of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills reunion, Andy Cohen turned the conversation from the women’s behavior to Lisa Vanderpump’s husband, Ken Todd.

Before Andy asked Vanderpump how she felt about the way Ken spoke to her cast mates, we were able to watch a montage of Ken repeatedly attacking the women — both to their faces and behind their backs. Lisa Rinna seemed to get the brunt of it this season, with Ken calling her a wanker, crazy, stupid, a silly cow, proclaiming she isn't the full ticket and is a stupid bitch.

More: RHOBH was wrong to force Lisa Vanderpump to talk about her abusive relationship

Rinna clearly took issue with Ken’s comments and came prepared with notes to the reunion of every name Ken had called her.

In past seasons, Yolanda Hadid has been on the receiving end with Ken calling her stupid and even grabbing her arm. This season, he was only caught on camera saying the Lyme disease survivor "looked terrible" because she showed up to a dinner party without makeup. He even made fun of Kyle Richards for wearing loose-fitted dresses, calling them muumuus and saying she had a bad fashion sense.

For a couple that parades their affluence the way that they do, you would think they would know the difference between what is acceptable and what isn't. But Vanderpump stood by her man when confronted by Andy Cohen and the ladies. Each time she was asked if she agreed with the offensive things Ken said, she simply replied with something passive like, "Well that is his opinion," or "I can't change him."

More: We shouldn't be surprised Lisa Vanderpump is quitting RHOBH

Even in the footage, Vanderpump can be seen laughing while Ken slurred Rinna. The most she said to him was "You can't say that," but Ken just replied, "Of course I can."

But Andy brought up a very good point: If it were the other way around, if Lisa Rinna’s husband, Harry Hamlin, had called Vanderpump a wanker or a stupid bitch, would that too be OK?

Vanderpump ultimately agreed that of course she would be angry — and it’s safe to say Ken wouldn't like it either.

More: RHOBH's Yolanda Foster crossed the line with her children's privacy

When it comes to Rinna, perhaps his intentions were to defend his wife, to have her back, but he could have done that without reducing himself to disrespecting another woman in the process. Plus, did he forget he willingly signed up to have those types of conversations filmed for reality TV? Shouldn’t he be a little more self-aware by now, with this being his sixth season on the show and all?

Ken seems to be at a lot of housewife-only events, while all the other husbands were probably working on playing golf. Perhaps the lines started to blur for him, or maybe he got a little too comfortable with the other women. Either way, it's time for Ken to take a seat and zip it.

Do you think Ken crossed the line?

Megan Hilty just found out she was nominated for a Tony — like yesterday — and while we're sure she's celebrating with friends, family and an unlimited amount of wine (at least that's what we'd be doing), she's also taking time to honor the female stars who've paved the way and inspired her thus far.

So without further ado, here are the women who made the ever-talented Megan Hilty's #WCW list:

1. Bernadette Peters

I grew up idolizing her... And I still do! She is a singular talent and has built an iconic career while maintaining the reputation of being the nicest woman in show business. (Side note: Peters played Hilty's mom on Smash! Check out the clip below.)

2. Ella Fitzgerald

I think she is the greatest singer of all time. She has a signature style, tone and phrasing that could never be reproduced.

3. Samantha Bee

She's smart, she's hilarious and she's reporting on issues that really matter.

4. Melissa McCarthy

I first saw her onstage years ago in Los Angeles at The Groundlings Theater and thought she was a star from the moment she came onstage. It has been so exciting and inspiring to watch her career skyrocket from there!

5. Danai Gurira

I just saw her play on Broadway in Eclipsed and was blown away by her talent. I was always a fan of her acting, and now I'm incredibly impressed with her as a writer and a business woman as well.

6. Dolly Parton

I was fortunate enough to get to work with her on 9 to 5 the Musical. To this day I always ask myself, "What would Dolly do?" She is the perfect example of how to get business done with grace, kindness and an incredible sense of humor.

We didn't think it could be done, but Michelle Obama made NCIS better

Michelle Obama guest starred on NCIS, and the audience couldn’t have been more pleased, proving, once again, that we should just keep her and Barack in the White House indefinitely. Normally, these guest appearances by politicians only serve to push an agenda, and fans usually hate it, but because the First Lady is amazing, she won over even the most die-hard NCIS fans.

The episode did serve to highlight Joining Forces, an organization started by Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, that helps support the families of members of the service. The show’s writers decided to integrate the organization into an episode of NCIS and figured they’d see if Obama was interested in working with them. As the talks started to turn into plans, the easiest way to film with the First Lady was for the film crew to go to the White House. They became the first film production to film in the White House!

Even if the episode didn’t resonate with fans, at least they had made history. But the response was overwhelmingly positive for both the storyline and Obama’s guest appearance.

More: NCIS: I'm definitely not prepared for Abby & Tony's goodbye

All of this leads me back to the question of why we have to lose her as the First Lady? She’s been such a strong advocate of some amazing organizations and initiatives, including Joining Forces and Let’s Move, a program aimed at combating childhood obesity. The way that she raises awareness for these issues, by going on popular television shows and enlisting the help of popular influencers, just shows how in-touch she is with pop culture and also with people’s biggest concerns.

I don’t think we’re ready to lose her. Especially not if the alternative is Mrs. Trump. I mean, I’m sure she’s a fine lady, but no one is Michelle Obama, and I just don’t want to see her go.

Did you see her guest appearance on NCIS? What did you think? Let me know!

So Nicki Minaj left Demi Lovato out of her picture, so what?

The Met Gala 2016 was a night filled with stunning and extravagant outfits, but there may have been a few cat fights that happened behind-the-scenes as well — at least that's the way Demi Lovato has made it seem thanks to her recent Instagram post.

More: Farrah Abraham blasts Nicki Minaj for being a bad example for young girls

The internet is currently wondering whether Lovato and Nicki Minaj are feuding, and it all started because of something so silly: Minaj took to Instagram to share a photo of herself, Moschino creative director Jeremy Scott, and Demi Lovato. However, she failed to tag Lovato in the image and simply captioned the post with "@itsjeremyscott @moschino."

Nicki Minaj Instagram

Nicki Minaj Instagram

Seems fair enough. She didn't throw any shade at Lovato with this image. She simply thanked the man responsible for both their outfits, which we think is perfectly acceptable. If she really didn't want Lovato in the image, she could have cropped her out or chosen a completely different image, and, believe me, there are many she could have chosen from — but it was Lovato's actions that created the unnecessary drama.

Taking to Instagram, Lovato posted a photo of her own, but in this one, Minaj looks to be giving her major side-eye. She captioned the image with, "This picture pretty much summed up my first and probably last met #cool #sof***ingawkward #notforme #sweatpants #forensicfiles #whatsgood" (you may remember that "what's good" line from when Minaj called out Miley Cyrus on stage at the VMAs).

Lovato's post created a rather unsurprising response, as multiple media publications began reporting that there was a possible feud brewing between the two women. Lovato then added on to her caption, writing, "p.s. some of y'all need to learn how to take a joke... I'm obviously laughing at the fact that 1. I look incredibly awkward and 2. That the shade being thrown in this picture actually gives me life."

More: Thank you, Demi Lovato, for showing us how to love our bikini bodies

OK, so Lovato says she's joking about the whole thing, and maybe she is, but she really appeared to be offended. She even posted a Snapchat with the caption, "when you aren't mentioned in a post but didn't do shit to the person..." — and there was absolutely no need to escalate the situation.

We love Lovato because she is so sincere and so willing to share her feelings, good and bad, with the world. But this is one time that people are not applauding her for her comments, as evident by the reaction to her post.

"Stop crying," des.alexis wrote on Lovato's picture.

"@ddlovato she always get upset so easily !!!pfff," mar_stina wrote.

"There is no shade, get over yourself god damn," sarahmcdu shared.

Biebersbodyheat also weighed in on the post, writing, "Demi needs to grow tf up."

"She's sucha crybaby. Omg," _cassanovaa wrote.

And _dominniiicccc reminded Lovato that with so many positive things in her life, she really shouldn't care, writing, "If I was in your shoes I wouldn't care what shade is thrown my way."

Oh come on, Beyoncé didn't need Jay Z to accompany her to the Met Gala

Beyoncé arrived at the 2016 Met Gala sans Jay Z, and, of course, his absence was noticed. But it really shouldn't have been such a big deal.

More: Still hunting for Becky? Beyoncé gave a major clue as to who she is not!

Beyoncé is a strong, independent woman, and she certainly does not need a date, which is why we find it so hard to believe that she reportedly "begged" her husband to accompany her to the prestigious event.

A source revealed to Hollywood Life that Jay Z flat-out refused to attend the event.

"Jay wanted no part of Met," a source told the publication. "HOV didn't want to be bombarded with questions from every which way. He didn't want Beyoncé's celebrity girlfriends giving him the side-eye and treating him like dirt because of Lemonade. He didn't want his boys who attended to blame him for all the flack their girls are giving him over Bey's songs. And he certainly didn't want to see Solange, given what happened to him in that elevator."

More: Beyoncé partied the night away alone at the Met Gala — where was Jay Z?

There's been a lot of drama surrounding the couple in recent weeks after Beyoncé dropped her latest album, Lemonade, with one of the tracks "Sorry" alluding to her husband's infidelity. So yes, he probably didn't want to have all eyes on him, but that's not really the issue here. The issue is that, according to the source, Beyoncé begged her husband to attend the event.

"Beyoncé begged him to come. She low key wanted to see him squirm under all the pressure he'd be under," the source said. "But he didn't have the guts to come and even told Beyoncé he was feeling sick earlier in the day. She knew he was lying about being sick but she didn't spend too much time trying to twist his arm. She was too excited preparing for the gala."

I struggle to believe that Bey would be so vindictive, especially since the couple recently proved just how happy and in love they still are — Bey recently dedicated a song to her "beautiful husband" — plus she seemed to have a great time on her own.

More: Beyoncé declares her undying love for Jay Z because — duh — they're married

But what do you think? Is there really any reason to believe that Jay Z didn't attend the Met Gala for any other reason than 1. he didn't feel like it or 2. he's done it all before? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.

School decides 9-year-old black girl's natural hair violates dress code

Once again, a black person is being sanctioned because of how she looks. Also, once again, it is a child demonstrating for the umpteenth time that black and nonwhite children are not granted the same childhood as their white counterparts, as they face racism and discrimination from basically the beginning.

More: A school just banned kids from voting a lesbian prom queen

A 9-year-old who attends Tarver Elementary School in Belton, Texas, was pulled out of school because her afro hairstyle was not in compliance with the school’s dress code. Check out her hair:

girl hair

girl hair

This is not the first school to have rules in place like this; it is not even the first entity to have rules in place like this. But the question still remains: Why can people not see this for what it is?

More: School lets parents embarrass their kids as punishment, and it's genius

It is racism, plain and simple. It is not just a “rules are rules” situation. When being black is against the dress code, that is prejudice. Black people have different hair than our nonblack peers, so it must be styled in different ways to protect it, including — but not limited to — braids, locs, twists, buns and afro puffs.

The afro puff or puff is the natural hair equivalent to a ponytail or pigtail; an afro is like us wearing our hair down. Black children must chemically straighten their hair for it to be straight (the easier way) or spend hours with a hot comb or at a salon to straighten it with heat non-permanently.

To not understand this and to penalize people for how their hair naturally grows out of their head is outrageous. It should outrage all Americans, and yet many often come to the defense of the racist rules (and those who enforce them).

More: High school's breastfeeding room brings out the internet pearl clutchers

Imagine, if only for a moment, a 9-year-old white child being told that her straight blond pigtails were against the dress code. That she needs to (chemically) change the natural texture of her hair in order to not be kicked out of school. When you try to punish a sweet white student for her hair, you're an over-the-top evil child hater, like the Trunchbull. When you do this to a black student, it's just "rules are rules" — everyday racism, nothing to see here. It sounds ridiculous because it is ridiculous. And it is every bit as ridiculous for a black child and her naturally kinky hair that needs to be styled in certain (different) ways.

America needs to do better with every way racism manifests itself in order to stop it everywhere.

Farrah Abraham did porn — it's old news and we should stop judging her

More: Farrah Abraham takes heat after she claims she's doing "good"

Recently, I was perusing Farrah Abraham's Instagram for another piece and noticed, not for the first time, the vast quantities of vitriol still aimed at Abraham for having made porn. In 2013 (the same year in which she waxed Sophia's unibrow), Abraham and adult film star James Deen made two movies together: Farrah Superstar: Backdoor Teen Mom and a sequel, Farrah 2: Backdoor and More. She also developed and sold a line of sex toys, another project that drew some intense ire from the internet.

I have a proposal for everyone continuing to lambast and slut-shame Abraham for making money via the porn and sex industry: Let it go.

Porn doesn't make anyone a bad parent or a bad person or a bad anything. It's a way to make money, and while there are certainly serious problems with it, it's not a measure of one's morality. Equating the two, especially when the person involved in the porn (hopefully of her own volition) is a woman, is the product of deep misogyny and a means of punishing someone for enjoying sex and encouraging others to enjoy it as well.

More: Farrah Abraham's visit to Derek Underwood's grave gets unexpected sympathy

There are plenty of examples of Abraham doing questionable things. To put it mildly, she's not super nice to the people around her. You could make a solid argument that putting makeup on a 6-year-old isn't the best thing to do. But Sophia's future isn't hopelessly damaged by the fact that her mother made adult films/sold sex toys/posted some pictures of herself in lingerie. It could, however, be impacted by the disgusting comments that permeate the media about her mother and the messages she gets about how women who choose sex work and sex-related careers, and who enjoy sex, are treated. There are consequences for those women and the internet is only one place where they play out.

Abraham has described her experience in the adult film industry as being less than great and that it has made it hard for her to trust people. Coercion exists in sex work; it's yet another example of how rape culture dominates all aspects of media and, by extension, life. But Abraham should not have to apologize for doing porn. If she's in charge of her own body, her sexuality and her expression of it, that is in no way a bad example for her daughter. If she had had a great experience in the industry, she shouldn't be made to regret it and she shouldn't have to defend herself, and she should absolutely not have to choose between parenting and making adult films.

Those who invest any amount of time screaming at Abraham on social media might want to consider what they're buying into and perpetuating, which is a totally uncomplicated way of looking at the world, which involves shaming women and, in this case, their children. It is in no way as simple as "porn = no morals," "porn = horrible parenting." Let's practice getting over it, internet, and working a little harder at thinking as opposed to just jerking our knees.

5 mistakes that could stop Tai Trang from winning Survivor

$
0
0

He may have been America's sweetheart for most of this season, but Survivor's Tai Trang continues to prove why he is his own biggest enemy. Sure, his strategies have evolved to show smart intuition, but his execution is simply awful.

I'm probably going to get some heat for derailing the Tai Trang fanbase, but here are the five reasons Tai can't win.

1. Wasted advantage

Earlier this season, Tai was given a secret advantage, which allowed him to cast two votes at an upcoming Tribal Council. He held that advantage until he deemed it was time for Michele to go, casting both his ballots against her. It was a failed attempt, however, because the tribe opted to oust Jason instead. That basically flushed his double-vote advantage while showing he was alone within his own alliance. Had he truly wanted Michele gone, there was something else he could've, and probably should've, done. That brings us to point No. 2.

2. Wasted Idol opportunity

If Tai wanted to make sure Michele was sent packing, the only way to do that would have been to secure her elimination by handing his Idol over to Jason. It was obvious Jason was the other potential target, so it could have changed up the entire game if Tai would've made the move. Plus, it wouldn't have wasted his second-vote advantage. He could've saved that altogether and simply played the Idol. Of course, it would have shown his current allies he's swapping sides again, but he's done it enough already that would it really make a difference? It may have been the best move to benefit his game because Michele, a true threat to win, would be gone for good. My guess is that Tai was simply overconfident that Aubry was sticking to the plan against Michele.

3. Talking too much

From spilling plans about the so-called "super Idol" several weeks ago at Tribal Council to openly explaining why Michele is beneath him in the alliance, Tai has made a lot of foot-in-mouth errors. Truly, less is more when it comes to Survivor. If Tai could learn to keep his chatter dialed down, he would be much better off. Honesty is the best policy in life, but it's mostly a death notice in this game. His performance at Tribal Council when trying to get Michele booted was painful to watch. He kept digging a deeper hole for himself with every uttered syllable, and it's going to be harder and harder to climb out of it. Michele has shown she doesn't like being messed with, as she fought back with Tai as he kept reiterating how she wasn't an important number in their voting block. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. He would have been better off to keep making her feel comfortable within their alliance. Sure, that may have been difficult to do since Cydney told Michele about Tai's plan, but he could have played that much smarter by saying less. Plus, it's clear some members of the tribe feel Tai is pushing his dictatorship-like ways on them, which is never a good thing. Nobody wants to be forced into anything.

4. He's a flip-flopper

Michele made a great point when her back was against the wall with Tai threatening to vote her out. She made sure to mention at Tribal Council that Tai has flipped on every alliance he's been a part of. She's right. While I do think swapping sides can be a great move in specific circumstances, Tai just seems to scrape along without much thought. Most frustrating? He found himself siding with Scot and Jason, this season's most hated villains. He even joined their scheme to sabotage camp by secretly extinguishing the tribe's fire while everybody was sleeping. He disappointingly drank their Kool-Aid. But even that bond didn't last, as he made a huge move and broke his word with Scot by not sacrificing his hidden Idol a few days later. This ties in with the point of poor strategic decisions, because now he's backstabbed people on the jury who will ultimately decide who wins the game's $1 million prize.

More: Survivor's Anna Khait reveals fan-favorite Tai Trang's strategic mistake

5. Strategic stupidity

All of these points converge into this. Tai isn't a smart, strategic player. Sorry, Tai fans. It's true and you know it. Although we're only seeing snippets of what actually happened during filming in Cambodia, Tai's thought process doesn't seem to consider how it will impact his chances at winning the $1 million. To be a Survivor winner takes the confidence of a cocky poker player, but one who isn't dumb enough to reveal their hand. He's just not that level of a player. His current main ally, Aubry, even turned against him despite knowing his plan was actually the smartest. If you can't get your own pals to stick to the clear-cut smart plan, then something is definitely wrong. I'm not saying Tai hasn't made big moves. He has. He's just gone about many of them the wrong way.

With only five castaways left, there isn't much room to hide. Although lots of viewers are gushing about their hopes and expectations for Michele to win it all, I'm still hopeful Aubry walks away this season's Survivor champ. I think she deserves it. Finale night is just two weeks away!

Supernatural: Nevermind, I don't want Chuck to be God any more

$

Since the Season 5 finale, Supernatural fans have speculated that Chuck is really God. Well, during Season 11, Episode 20 (appropriately titled "Don't Call Me Shurley"), God finally showed his face. Guess what? It is none other than the beloved Carver Edlund, aka Chuck Shurley.

More: Supernatural spoilers: We might finally have proof that Chuck is really God

Can you believe it? After 11 seasons, viewers can finally put a face with the almighty name. It almost seems surreal to know that Chuck truly is God. As exciting as it is, and as much as I've wished for Chuck to take on the role of God, is there any way I can give back my wish? Yeah, I kind of regret it. Before I get into why, let me backtrack a bit.

Chuck Shurley
Image: Tumblr

The episode opened with Metatron digging through a dumpster for food and then, after yelling "I give up!", he was immediately transported to a bar, aka God's safe haven that keeps him out of Amara's grasp. Metatron was beyond surprised to see Chuck and was even more shocked when Sam and Dean's good friend showed his true self. Metatron almost fell over upon seeing the light of God exude from Chuck's body. Side note: I'd like to applaud whoever thought to put a "World's Greatest Dad" coffee mug next to Chuck.

It was explained that God has been living as Chuck for some time now. That's right, the Chuck who was first introduced in Season 4 has been God all this time. God was having some fun "acting" and playing a different role than himself. Basically, this was a great way for him to hide, all while having front-row seats to his human creation. I mean, he even turned off the amulet (yes, Dean's amulet) so no one would know he was nearby. Oh, FYI, he doesn't like the "G" word and prefers to be called Chuck. So, that I will.

Throughout the episode, Metatron and God had a deep, long talk about where he's been, what he's been up to and why he's doing what he's doing. In addition to writing his own autobiography titled, "God. An Autobiography," which Metatron is helping make more honest and intriguing, he opened up about being Amara's brother. Over time, he created different worlds because he was so lonely, but Amara would destroy every new world he'd build. That's why he locked her away. What about now? What does he think of Amara being out and wanting to destroy another one of his worlds? Well, Chuck doesn't seem to care and even said "it's her turn to shine."

More: Supernatural: I'll be truly pissed if Amara can't get God to show his face

And here is why I'm not sure I want Chuck to be God. He is ready, willing and able to let Amara destroy humanity, his creation. Despite Metatron trying to persuade him otherwise and calling him a "coward," Chuck continued to be a dick. Look, I assumed God wouldn't be this wonderful being, because he's been hiding for so long and refusing to show up when everyone has needed him the most. That said, knowing Chuck is God and seeing him act like a horrible being is a whole different story.

Chuck Shurley
Image: Tumblr

In the end, Chuck eventually showed up to the town where Sam and Dean were trying to save everyone from Amara's evil fog. I guess that's a good thing, right? Actually, Dean found the amulet glowing in Sam's pocket, which then led them to Chuck standing on the street, who said to them, "We should probably talk." Ya think?

Does this mean Chuck changed his mind about helping the world by battling his sister? Is he going to stop being such a dick? Is he going to show his good side? Here's hoping, because if not, it will be painful to watch. I don't know about you, but I don't want to see Chuck as an asshole. I want to remember Chuck as the geeky, lovable Chuck fans first saw in "The Monster at the End of this Book," not as a jerk.

Don't get me wrong, seeing the "Chuck is God" theory come to life is brilliant and made for one of the best episodes of the season — and possibly the series. Plus, the story line is amazing, not to mention Rob Benedict pulls off his roles as Chuck and God beautifully. It's just difficult to see him in this whole other light, but I also am excited to see what else he brings to the table.

With that, I'm going to forget about all of my thoughts and feelings at this moment to bask in the beauty of having Benedict back in the Supernatural world.
