Julianne Hough at the People's Choice Awards

Julianne Hough

Safe Haven actress Julianne Hough looked like a celestial dream in her Tony Ward Couture dress. Bonus: She wore shimmery eyeshadow! Maybe Hough's looking so gorgeous because she's so in love with her boyfriend, Ryan Seacrest.

"[He’s] very thoughtful and very generous...Things that you wouldn’t think a guy would even pick up on he’s already done five steps ago," she told Entertainment Tonight recently.

Taylor Swift at the People's Choice Awards

Taylor Swift: Miserable at the People's Choice Awards

Taylor Swift doesn't exactly look happy at the 2013 People's Choice Awards.

Taylor Swift sad at the 2013 PCAs

Our jaws dropped when we saw Taylor Swift on the red carpet at the 2013 People's Choice Awards in her low-cut Ralph Lauren.

The next thought? She looks super-duper miserable.

Swift did put on a brave face to accept her award for Favorite Country Artist. She thanked her fans on stage and even seemed to choke up a bit when she thanked them for "caring about her."

A veiled dig at now-ex Harry Styles?

To add insult to injury, Olivia Munn crashed some of Swift's television time with her Kanye West-esque stage crash. The Magic Mike actress clutched Swift's award as a joke while the songstress tried to snatch it back.

"This always happens," Swift deadpanned, referencing the now-famous moment at the 2009 Video Music Awards.

At least one person was appreciative of the off-the-cuff moment: Maroon 5's Adam Levine.

"Taylor Swift is super charming," he told the crowd as he accepted his award.

"I was trying to think of something to say, and it's not happening," the Maroon 5 singer said. [Taylor] said, 'This always happens.' That's genius, by the way."

Potential pair? She fits his type — tall and leggy — to a T.

The best performances of the People's Choice Awards

The People's Choice Awards aired live Wednesday night. Here, we highlight the show's best musical performances.

Alicia Keys performs Alicia Keys performs "Girl on Fire" and "New Day"

Alicia Keys performance at the 2013 People's Choice Awards was nothing short of amazing. The beautiful introduction song was Keys' recent hit, "Girl on Fire," which showcased Alicia's flawless vocals — she even sounded better on the live performance than she does on the recorded version of the song.

Keys then transitioned into the song "New Day," with dramatic choreography reminiscent of Janet Jackson's Control days. Keys' "New Day" is likely going to be her second single off her album, Girl on Fire.

We also can't forget to mention the very awkward introduction actor Shemar Moore gave — he took the stage to recount the one, distant time he asked Alicia Keys out on a date. According to Moore, Keys "appreciate his flirt game, but had her man situation handled." Uh…okay? Keys married mega music producer Swizz Beatz back in 2010 and they have a child together. Bringing up the past just felt awkward for all of us listening to Moore tell millions of people how Keys Keys shot him down.

The Wanted at the People's Choice Awards. The Wanted melts our hearts

The Wanted won for Best Breakout Artist and sang "Afternoon Delight" during their acceptance of their People's Choice Award. The a cappella seemed perfect and the band looked like they were having so much fun — and were no doubt excited — to win their first award. Their whole acceptance speech was just super cute. Congratulations to The Wanted!

Christina Aguilera performs Blank Page at People's Choice Awards.Christina Aguilera shows she's still got the vocal chops

Christina Aguilera started off a bit shaky in the first minute of her performance of "Blank Page" at the People's Choice Awards. Yet, she hit her stride and mesmerized both us and surely the audience with a breathtaking performance of "Blank Page," off her latest album, Lotus.

Surrounded by candles and dressed in a classy white, satin blazer, Aguilera didn't hesitate to show why she is one of the most-celebrated vocalists of the past decade. She also took home the People's Choice Award for the People's Voice.

Sandra Bullock was honored at the People's Choice Awards on Jan. 9 for her truly outstanding philanthropic work with Warren Easton Charter High School in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Sandra Bullock receives Favorite Humanitarian Award at the People's Choice Awards.

Sandra Bullock was gracious and elegant as she accepted the first ever People's Choice Award for Favorite Humanitarian. Bullock was presented with the Favorite Humanitarian Award for her significant volunteer efforts with Warren Easton Charter High School in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Sandra Bullock protecting New Orleans homes against Isaac>>

Bullock states that after Hurricane Katrina, about six years ago, she became deeply connected to the local community and dedicated herself to the cause of bringing Warren Easton Charter back to life. As Sandra states, the remarkable story surrounding Warren Easton Charter is about, "commitment, community, volunteerism, blind faith and a whole lot of love."

What career move saved Sandra Bullock from depression?>>

Warren Easton Charter was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and the local community feared a safe haven for the kids would be lost forever. "After Katrina, the push to open this school didn't exist. The plan was to, maybe, turn it into condominiums," says Sandra. Determined to reopen Warren Easton Charter despite the obstacles, a group formed and called themselves the Hall of Fame Committee — comprised of faculty, staff, alumni and community members — and they worked together to save Warren Easton Charter.

Sandra Bullock stepped in when she learned Warren Easton Charter needed outside help to restore the school. She provided new band equipment and uniforms to allow students to continue their chance to express themselves through music. Bullock also donated substantial funds for college scholarships, athletic equipment, necessary renovations and even a health care clinic.

Congratulations to Sandra Bullock on receiving the first ever People's Choice Favorite Humanitarian Award.

SheKnows chats with Olivia Munn about season two of The Newsroom and whether she’s done with New Girl for good.

Just when we thought their romance was headed for relationship status, Olivia Munn’s character Angie left Nick sad and lonely on last night’s episode of New Girl.

After a three-episode arc, Munn was looking like a promising girlfriend for Nick, so audiences were bummed when she broke up with him via a note on the pillow. So will she be back? Munn informed us at the People’s Choice Awards this evening that that is unlikely… for now.

"Sad for Nick," Olivia told us. "But I’m over on The Newsroom. Maybe whenever my schedule frees up I can try to swing both."

Munn is currently filming season two of HBO’s The Newsroom, playing economics reporter Sloan Sabbith. While she doesn’t know if she’ll be getting a love interest this season, Munn says she’s just happy to play a strong, smart woman.

"It’s all developing and there are things that I’m not even really allowed to say," said Munn. "I like doing the work stuff. I like when my character gets to get in there and fight for the things that she’s passionate about."

While her show was not nominated for any People’s Choice Awards, Munn was at the show to present Favorite Country Artist, which went to Taylor Swift.

"I’m from Oklahoma and it’s something that people don’t really know about me," said Munn. "Country music is in my car 24-7."

Catch this country girl back on The Newsroom when season two premieres on HBO in June.

PCAs shocker: Christina Aguilera wears pants

Christina Aguilera did something we never expected her to do at the 2013 People's Choice Awards.

Christina Aguilera wears pants to the PCAs

We had to do a double take when Christina Aguilera started her performance of "Blank Page" at the 2013 People's Choice Awards.

Why?

You might want to sit down for this one: She was wearing pants!

The 2013 People's Choice Awards: The complete list of winners >>

The 32-year-old singer and former judge on The Voice looked almost conservative in her slim black pants and cream-colored blazer. It's a nice departure from her typical tight and two-sizes-too-small dresses.

Then again, the song required a bit more serious gear than the platinum blond is known for.

"The song is about making mistakes and realizing you can't go back but you can start over with a blank slate," a source told US Weekly of the new song.

"Christina expresses herself through her songs and this one is very emotional," the source added. "This year is a new beginning for her and she's excited."

Taylor Swift: Miserable at the People's Choice Awards >>

She even got a little choked up on stage.

"Thank you for giving me this form of expression and letting me use my voice," she told the crowd while accepting her "People's Voice" award. "It means so much to me. When I sing I believe it truly is the only time I can truly be myself."

"I find a home in music and I hope others can find a home in music as well."

But, back to the pants. Christina, just so you know: Pants? Good. No pants? Bad.

Super sweet and funny Kaley Cuoco lights up People's Choice Awards

Kaley Cuoco shined at the People's Choice Awards as she added just the right amount of sweetness to the fan favorite show.

Kaley Cuoco hosts the People's Choice Awards.Getting the People's Choice Awards off to a great start

The introduction at the People's Choice Awards was hilarious and Kaley Cuoco did a fantastic job; she was personable and fun without being cliché. One thing we noticed was how natural Cuoco was throughout all the television and film references. These elements of her hosting the People's Choice Awards remained consistent throughout the show. Cuoco seemed to lose many of her nerves that got the best of her last year. Well done, Kaley.

Throughout the People's Choice Awards

Much of the time at the People's Choice Awards is spent between presenters and winners with few musical performances. Unlike the Academy Awards or Golden Globes, where the host plays a pivotal role in the show's success, the People's Choice Awards is a much more laid-back event. However, Kaley handled her entrances, exits and lines like a pro and she only flubbed reading the prompter a few times. When Kaley realized she had messed up she made a funny joke and facial expression while moving on — nothing seemed to faze her. This was such a great improvement from last year when Kaley Cuoco seemed to be upstaged by Neil Patrick Harris before the first commerical break.

Closing the show with fun and ease

Kaley Cuoco did an excellent job closing the show. Cuoco ended on a high note as her television show, The Big Bang Theory, took home the People's Choice Award for Favorite Network TV Comedy — a huge win since the show was up against Glee, How I Met Your Mother and New Girl. Cuoco handled the transition of thanking fans for the award and closing the show with ease.

Britney Spears is done with The X Factor

$

Britney Spears has officially left The X Factor and her $15 million contract behind. She's ready to record a new album and hit the road in 2013.

Was she fired or did she quit? Well, the rumors over the last few weeks were that Britney Spears was going to be fired from the judging panel over at The X Factor. On Thursday, however, TMZ exclusively reported that Spears quit on her own accord.

After one season and a $15 million contract, the "Toxic" singer never really gelled with the rest of the panel. The TMZ source told them, "Britney loves Simon, she likes Demi Lovato but her thing is music."

On the flip side, Us Weekly seems to think that Spears was shown the door. Their insider said, "Producers wanted her for the long haul, but it isn't working."

It is clear that even FOX executives were underwhelmed by her performance on the show, which often involved her doling out compliments like "amazing", but offering little else. Kevin Reilly addressed this issue at the recent Television Critics Association panel on Jan. 8.

The network exec said, "I thought it went very, very well... I think Britney did a really good job... She tucked in really nicely on that bench. For next year, I don't know."

One thing that does ring true is that the 31-year-old is going to get back to her roots and hit the studio. She's planning on recording her eighth studio album with successful producers like Will.i.am and Hit-Boy. After the album is released, it is expected she will launch her next tour.

With Spears gone and L.A Reid exiting the panel at the end of last season, Simon Cowell certainly has his work cut out for him. The ratings for The X Factor were down about 20 percent and the show is struggling to find an audience amongst a crowded field of talent shows.

What do you think: Is the audience tired of the format or are they just tired of celebrity judges?

SheKnows former Girl Crush of the Month Rachael Leigh Cook and her hubby Daniel Gilles wow us as the cutest couple on the red carpet at the People’s Choice Awards.

Rachael Leigh Cook and Daniel Gillies at the People's Choice AwardsPerception star Rachael Leigh Cook  made her red carpet comeback Wednesday night as she wowed the crowd in a gorgeous, blue-green Oliver Tolentino gown at the 2013 People’s Choice Awards.

“I’m just happy I fit into it,” Cook joked when we chatted with her before the show. “The rest is gravy.”

Check out Rachael on our best dressed list >>

But it wasn’t just the dress that made her look. Cook was joined by her sexy hubby, Vampire Diaries star Daniel Gillies, wearing a complimentary blue suit. The perfect accessory.

WATCH OUR INTERVIEW WITH THE CUTE COUPLE

When questioned about her best beauty advice, Rachael told us, “A husband to keep you warm on cold nights like this."

The duo — married for eight years — is extremely supportive of each other. So much so that when asked about their upcoming plans for the year, each spoke about the other.

“Daniel’s going to work on at least two other shows,” Rachael told us, referring to Season 4 of The Vampire Diaries and the medical drama Saving Hope. “There’s an exciting development in there,” Daniel added of Elijah, his character on Diaries, before quickly mentioning Rachael’s second season of Perception.

“This season we’re going to learn more about my character’s personal life, maybe even meet her ex-husband,” said Cook.

So who will the lucky guy be? Rachael says he’s yet to be cast, and sweetly suggested her hubby to star. Daniel however, said she had someone else in mind.

“She’s been saying Ryan Phillipe for the past couple of weeks,” and laughed as she playfully hit him with her purse.

Too cute! You can catch Daniel on The Vampire Diaries, returning to the CW on Jan. 17, and Rachael in Perception this summer.

Most shocking moments in Golden Globes history

$

The 2013 Golden Globes — hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler — will go down on Jan. 13.

We're hoping for a funny show, especially since awards shows are typically so boring. The unscripted moments are often the best ones — like these shocking moments from past Golden Globe Awards.

Canceled

Golden Globes cancelled in 2008

The most shocking moment at the 2008 Golden Globes? That there was no show. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association canceled the show in solidarity with the writer's strike.

The show was replaced with an hour-long press conference.

Ricky Gervais "fired" mid-show

Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes

Ricky Gervais ruffled more than a few A-list feathers during the 2011 Golden Globes, but everyone took it in good spirits.

Or, did they?

Fans quickly realized that Gervais was absent from the second half of the show, leaving them wondering if producers sacked him backstage.

He wasn't — and he didn't back down from his harsh words for celebrities.

"I'm confronting the elephant in the room. They hired me. Like I'm going to go out there and not talk about the issues in their industry," he later told Piers Morgan. "Don't forget, I've got to be an outsider there. I mustn't come out there as everyone's mate and schmooze, that's nauseating. I've got to come out there, and I've got to roast them."

Drunk Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor at the Golden Globes

The late Elizabeth Taylor was very much alive — and sloshed — when she presented the award for Best Motion Picture Drama at the 2001 Golden Globes.

And how do we know she was drunk? The oft-married actress slurred her words repeatedly and delivered this classic line:

"And the winner is... it's flashing 'envelope,'" she slurred while trying to announce the winner.

Isaac Mizrahi gropes Scarlett Johansson

Isaac Mizhari at the Golden Globes

It technically didn't happen during the show, but designer Isaac Mizrahi made starlets like Teri Hatcher and Eva Longoria blush when he asked way personal — and gross — questions on the 2006 Golden Globes red carpet.

The worst moment? When Mizrahi groped a surprised Scarlett Johansson on the red carpet.

And she wasn't pleased.

"It was definitely in poor taste," Johansson later told the Los Angeles Times. "I’d been prepping for two hours with hair and makeup and getting dressed. And the first interview I do, someone who I have never met before fondles me for his own satisfaction."

Gary Oldman blasts "sympathy" wins

Gary Oldman doesn't like the Golden Globes. The Dark Knight Rises actor told the reporters backstage at the 2012 Empire Awards that the show's voting is "bent" to reward fan favorites and sympathetic characters.

"There's always a bit of that involved, people talk about the 'sympathy win' or someone will get something for their body of work rather than that role," he said. "The Oscars and Baftas, the voting and all of that is pretty straightforward. But the Globes, the foreign press, is a whole different thing."

We can't wait to get all judge-y over the gowns the stars wear to the 2013 Golden Globes. Let's get prepared for Sunday's show by going over the worst-dressed stars from the past few years.

Zooey Deschanel

Zooey Deschanel at the 2012 Golden Globes

Are we caught in The Matrix? No, but Zooey Deschanel was definitely in another dimension when she opted for the Prada gown she wore to the 2012 Golden Globes.

Sarah Michelle Gellar

Sarah Michelle Gellar at the 2013 Golden Globes

Sarah Michelle Gellar looked like a tie-dyed nightmare in her Monique Lhuillier gown. It's kind of understandable, though: She let her daughter pick it out.

"It's funny — I didn't try on that many dresses. They had them all lined up and I was working all week and my 2-year-old walked in, walked up to this dress and said, 'Mama, wear this!'"she said. "So I put it on and said, 'OK!'"

Michelle Williams

Michelle Williams at the 2011 Golden Globes

Michelle Williams usually kills it on the red carpet, but she looked more hippy than couture in the Valentino gown she wore to the 2011 Golden Globes. Not your best look, Michelle.

Helena Bonham Carter

Helena Bonham Carter at the 2011 Golden Globes

We think Helena Bonham Carter tries to get on the worst-dressed list. Case in point? The kooky creation she wore to the 2011 Golden Globes — complete with mismatched shoes!

Christina Hendricks

Christina Hendricks at the 2010 Golden Globes

Mad Men star Christina Hendricks usually looks amazing, but the peach-colored Cristian Siriano dress she wore to the 2010 show just washed her out. Not a good match for her pale skin tone.

Jane Lynch

Same goes for Glee star Jane Lynch. The dress is very flattering, but the color reminds us of curtains.

On-the-go diet tips

You've managed to keep your New Year's resolution to eat balanced, healthy meals at home, yet your schedule has you meeting friends for lunch, feeding your kids drive-through food on the way to after-school events and relying on airport food while traveling for work.

Sticking to a sensible diet is certainly easier in the comfort of your own kitchen, but that doesn't mean you need to kick your New Year's diet resolution to the curb when you are on the go. Here are some delicious and nutritious strategies to keep you eating healthy meals at restaurants, airports and more.

Dine out wisely

Even though at many restaurants a single meal can feed a small family, eating out doesn't have to mean diet disaster. Some restaurants have not only scaled-down portion sizes, they also have diet-friendly choices listed on the menu.

However, when in doubt, go to eateries armed with these tips:

  • Order an appetizer instead of an entree. Appetizer portions are usually smaller.
  • Skip the pre-meal bread basket or chips and dip.
  • Share an entree with a friend or box up half of your meal to enjoy for lunch or dinner the next day.
  • Start with a salad and low-fat dressing or clear broth-based soup to fill up before the main course.
  • Choose vegetable- or lean protein-based entrees instead of rich, carb-heavy meals.
  • Have fruit for dessert or share a single dessert with your tablemates.

Regardless of the where or what you eat, be sure to slow down and actually taste your meal; you'll enjoy it more and likely eat less.

Skip the dollar menu

On those days when your kids won't take no for an answer, and you don't have time to stop anywhere else, heading into a fast food drive-through doesn't mean you need to skip a meal. It does, however, mean looking past the dollar menu, where most of the cheapest items are the highest in fat and calories. Choose a salad with low-fat dressing, the smallest single-patty burger sans mayo and cheese, grilled or broiled chicken sandwiches, tacos or wraps or small rice bowls with stir-fried vegetables and lean protein such as chicken or fish. Avoid all fried foods and soft drinks, and if you need a sweet, opt for a small frozen yogurt or fruit parfait instead of a chocolate brownie sundae or giant cookie. Best yet, visit the websites of the fast food restaurants you frequent and download their nutritional information; you'll be able to find the healthier, lower-calorie foods before you even drive up.

Smart choices for fast food>>

Navigate convenience-store fare

You're late for your next appointment that will run through lunch, and the only place to grab a bite is the neighborhood convenience store. Past the jumbo candy bars and 64-ounce cups of cola, you actually can find convenient healthy foods.

Here are just a few of the smarter food choices at the corner convenience store:

  • Single-serving low-fat milk or yogurt
  • String cheese and a piece of fruit
  • 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice
  • Microwave soup
  • Whole-grain crackers or pretzels
  • Beef jerky
  • Low-fat cottage cheese
  • Small packs of nuts
  • Protein bar

Keep in mind that convenience store food is priced higher because it is convenient. Plan ahead, take the time to buy healthy snacks and meals at the grocery store, and keep them handy when you're on the go.

Try these 21 homemade snacks with less than 100 calories>>

Satisfy your airport appetite

Most airports have a smorgasbord of eateries for the hungry traveler, and there are many healthy airport foods from which to choose. Since free in-flight snacks and meals have become scarce , securing a meal before you board is the best way to eat healthy and prevent a starvation-induced binge when you land.

Try these diet-friendly airport foods:

  • Protein shake from the juice bar
  • Chicken or shrimp salad with low-fat dressing
  • Turkey wrap with vegetables
  • Lean meat and cheese sandwich without mayonnaise and topped with veggies
  • Sushi
  • Stir-fried veggies and a small bowl of steamed rice
  • Vegetarian pizza

For dessert, have a small scoop of low-fat ice cream or a small frozen yogurt with fruit topping. Grab a protein bar or small bag of dried fruit and nuts to nosh on the plane or for later in the day.

Driving instead? Try these healthy road trip snacks and meals>>

Hold your own at happy hour

Those refreshing fruity margaritas and luscious cocktails can be hard to resist, but these drinks are packed with sugar and calories, and can pack on the pounds fast. This doesn't mean a glass of water or diet cola is your only option. Simply skip the fancy mixed drinks and order a glass of wine, a wine spritzer or a light beer. You can also ask the bartender for a cocktail made with low-calorie or no-calorie mixers. Regardless of the drinks you choose, stick to one or two and sip slowly.

up with the designer!

Everyone's favorite wedding gown designer is showing off her exquisite taste in a new collection of engagement and wedding rings with Blue Nile. We recently caught up with the master of wedding couture and picked her brain on the collection, her top tips for choosing the perfect ring and the key to finding the perfect wedding dress.

Monique Lhuillier rings for Blue NileSheKnows: Congrats on your collaboration with Blue Nile! How did you get involved with the brand?

Monique Lhuillier: As the premier online jewelry destination for diamonds and engagement jewelry, Blue Nile is the perfect partner. Not only did I want the highest quality product for my collection, but I also was looking for a retailer that understood the Monique Lhuillier DNA. With my busy lifestyle, I find myself online quite a bit, whether I’m just researching or making purchases.

"Choose something that — as soon as you try it on — brings out that happiness you want to feel on your special day."

SK: Tell us about the collection. Where did you get inspiration for the various ring styles?

ML: I was inspired by the designs of my bridal gowns. Above all, I wanted my jewelry collection to be delicate, romantic and refined, qualities that define my bridal aesthetic. It was important that the collection be made with premium quality platinum, which is a metal meant to last a lifetime. Additionally, each piece is set with a pink sapphire, my favorite accent color and symbolic of a blushing bride.

SK: For all the guys out there: What advice do you have for finding that perfect, special ring to propose to their woman with?

ML: Every woman is unique and special, so she’s looking for a ring that reflects her uniqueness. My advice is for the man to spend time doing his research on the diamond, and to enter the process with an idea of what his bride-to-be wants. It’s important to keep in mind that the engagement ring is a symbol of their lives together, a piece that will last a lifetime.

SK: We have to ask: For all the ladies out there getting married, what's the best advice you have for finding that perfect dress?

ML: Every bride wants to feel beautiful and special on her wedding day. Choose something that — as soon as you try it on — brings out that happiness you want to feel on your special day. It’s all about a beautifully executed, elegant dress that evokes emotion.

We have a total crush on Anne Hathaway's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

Geez Anne Hathaway, stop looking so darn good for God's sake! You're making the rest of us mere mortals look bad. Totally kidding, girl, I'm kind of obsessed with your style.

This week, the Les Miserables star showed off her ever-evolving pixie cut at a gala in NYC and I suddenly decided that I really do like her new cropped locks. At first, I wasn't so sure, but now that I see the look evolving, I'm coming to love it along with Anne's attitude more and more. So what caused this sudden change of heart? One word: bangs. The jagged and piecey bangs have turned Anne's look from a don't to a total do and help make the look more feminine.

Oribe's Original Pomade

Tempted to sport your own pixie look with bangs? Make sure to use a shine-enhancing product while blow-drying. Want that piecey look that Anne's totally rocking? Get yourself some pomade, girl. Our fave? Oribe's Original Pomade.

Friday's Fashion Obsessions: Sarah Hyland and Lisa Rinna

Sarah Hyland and Lisa Rinna's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Sarah Hyland

Sarah Hyland

Sarah Hyland is becoming quite the regular fixture on Friday's Fashion Obsessions. This week, she blew me away with the tres adorable dress she wore to the LA premiere of Struck By Lightning.

This dress gives new meaning to the phrase "Business in the front, party in the back." No seriously, the super cute tail — for lack of a better word here — is so fun. Now I know a lot of you might disagree — the look is a bit bridal, after all — but I think it's refreshing to see a young star taking subtle fashion risks. With all the Ke$has and Lady Gagas out there these days, it's nice to see that young starlets don't have to show off their scantily clad bodies to make a fashion statement.

The final verdict? The look is super chic from head to toe — except those shoes. They look a size too big for petite Hyland. But we'll let that slide.

Lisa RinnaLisa Rinna

Now this is how to do black on black on black, ladies: Add a pop of color! Whether you choose red, yellow or pink like Lisa Rinna did here, this is the perfect way to avoid looking like you're heading to a funeral.

What I love the most about this outfit is the fact that it's totally easy to recreate. Think about it: Most women have a pair of glossy black pumps, a colorful blazer, a sequined black top and black pants. If you're missing any of the items in your wardrobe, don't run out to the mall so fast. You can always substitute leather pants with shiny black leggings and a long black tunic if you have to improvise. And swap out the pink blazer for a super cute and colorful sweater or cropped jacket.

The final verdict? Simple, sexy and classy. Loving it!

Friday's Fashion Fails: Katharine McPhee and Chloe Moretz

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Katharine McPhee and Chloe Moretz's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Katharine McPhee

Katharine McPhee

Did Katharine McPhee change in the limo ride over to the NBCUniversal Winter TCA Tour and forget to switch her shoes? This is the outfit she chose for her press day to promote her series Smash and it's not exactly a smash hit in our book.

The hi-low animal printed dress is on trend, and we don't mind the sheer top. But what is with the studded black sneakers she's also sporting? Who does she think she is, Kristen Stewart?

Comfy kicks have no place on the red carpet when you're promoting your TV series, Kat! Save these shoes for when you're running errands and rock them with a pair of skinny jeans, not a dress.

The final verdict? Where was her stylist on this one? We also think her hair looks a bit messy here and we wouldn't have gone with a red lip to complete this ensemble. We know you can do better, Katharine!

Chloe Moretz

Chloe Moretz

It's great that Chloe Moretz is giving back. Here's the Hugo actress at Aeropostale and DoSomething.org's 6th Annual Teens for Jeans event in West Hollywood. So we're going to give her some advice back: snap a quick cell phone self pic before leaving the house to make sure nothing is see through!

Chloe is a relative newcomer to the red carpet scene, so maybe she's not familiar with one of the age old fashion rules: flashbulbs can make sheer things see through. Her outfit isn't bad, but we can totally see her bra through her top.

Since Chloe is only 15, we'd also love to see her experiment with some color and break away from this all-black, Gothic look she's sporting.

The final verdict? Her feline flats are cute, but they don't quite mesh with this rocker chic look. We'd pair them with polka dots and a collared shirt like Taylor Swift did recently.

What is tantric sex?

$

We can guess what comes to mind when we say "tantric sex": Sting. Ever since the musician made a drunken comment to an interviewer about having tantric sex for hours with his wife, Trudie Styler, the specifics of the tantra have become a bit murky. But don't fret: To enjoy everything tantric sex has to offer, you don't have to purchase an Oriental rug, shave your head or even listen to The Police.

Couple having sex together

To get to the heart of what tantric sex actually means, we caught up with Mark Michaels and Patricia Johnson, authors of Great Sex Made Simple: Tantric Tips to Deepen Intimacy and Heighten Pleasure, who schooled us in the ways of the tantra — and how regular women can get the most out of their sex lives using tantric techniques.

How Sting got it wrong

If you take away nothing else from this story, remember that the 5,000-year-old Eastern spiritual practice of tantric sex does not mean that you have to make love for hours. Instead, enlightenment and having a reverence for your partner that lasts beyond the length of any orgasm is at the core of the teachings, Michaels and Johnson say.

"The tantric approach has far more to do with your mental approach than with technique."

"It's funny that a comment Sting made over 20 years ago still has an enduring hold on the public's imagination," the couple says. "He's tried to explain it away or recant it in various ways. At one point, he said that he regretted making the statement and didn't really feel he could talk about the subject beyond saying that his wife, Trudy, is his church. That's much closer to what the spirit of tantric sex is all about."

"In the classical sexual ritual, the participants worship each other as embodiments of deities. We encourage people to bring an attitude of reverence into their lovemaking and to all their interactions. The tantric approach has far more to do with your mental approach than with technique. It's certainly got nothing to do with bragging about staying power."

But in tantric sex, you can feel pleasure longer...

"That said, prolonged lovemaking is part of the tradition," Michaels and Johnson say. "The tantrics of old recognized that orgasm can be a mystical experience, often the most readily accessible mystical experience of all. During orgasm, the mind goes quiet, and you may feel a sense of merger — be it with a partner or even with all that is.

For most of us, the transcendent potential in sex is something that's experienced only briefly, during the orgasm itself. If you extend arousal and focus on building it , you may start to feel this sense of union well before you have an orgasm, and it is likely to last far longer than it would in more conventional lovemaking. So making it last is a means to an end, not an end in itself. If you can stay turned on for a half hour or so, you're likely to experience the altered state of consciousness we just described."

How to incorporate elements of tantric sex into your own bedroom:

1

Focus on your breathing and your reaction to touch

"It's fairly common for people to check out during sex, to do things by rote and without a whole lot of reflection. Paying attention to what you're experiencing in your body, the way you are breathing and how your partner is responding are all very important," the couple says.

2

Give and receive — start with kisses

"To take this a step further, people tend to interact sexually based on a set of tacit understandings: Basically, I'll do you for a while, and then you can do me, and if we're lucky, we'll both have a good experience," Michaels and Johnson say.

"We encourage people to separate giving and receiving in a very methodical way. For example, it's great to experiment with giving and receiving kisses. Take a couple of minutes and allow your partner to kiss you and explore your mouth with his tongue. Then reverse roles. When you're kissing, see how fully you can give yourself over to the active role. When you're receiving, surrender to the experience completely."

3

Take 60 minutes and give each other a massage — but no sex yet!

"Set aside an hour or so to give and receive full body massages . Do this on different days. As with the kissing exercise, the role of the giver is to give as fully as possible, and the role of the receiver is simply to receive. Taking this activity out of the realm of foreplay and keeping the roles clearly defined may help you discover new sources of pleasure, and may also give you new insights into the way you interact with your partner both in and out of bed."

4

Break a taboo by just talking about sex

"Many traditional tantric practices involved breaking cultural taboos, and there were many in medieval India," the couple says. "This was true both in the context of sexual ritual and more generally. In the simplest terms, the violation of these cultural norms had a liberating effect. Of course, we don't live in a society that has such clearly defined social rules, but we all have our own self-imposed limitations and our habitual ways of being, in lovemaking and more generally in life. If you can shed some of your inhibitions, you're likely to experience more pleasure. Talking frankly about sex is a big taboo for many, so for many, having frequent and explicit conversations about sex is a great first step."

5

Explore a personal sexual taboo together

"If you want to get a little bolder, you can identify a couple of personal taboos , and then decide on one that you might be interested in breaking," Michaels and Johnson say. "Don't pick anything huge at first; it might just mean making love with the lights on or experimenting with light bondage, sensory deprivation or role-play. The purpose is to become more flexible and aware and to be less limited by preconceived ideas about yourself. Sometimes we deprive ourselves of a lot of pleasure by thinking, 'I'm not the kind of person who would enjoy that.'"

Zero Dark Thirty movie review: Time to catch bin Laden

$
0
0
Detailing the most extensive manhunt in perhaps all of history, this film is told through the eyes of a woman CIA agent, who will stop at nothing to bring down Osama bin Laden, the man responsible for Sept. 11. Though difficult to watch at times, director Kathryn Bigelow unflinchingly tells this true story without an ounce of sentimentality.

Zero Dark Thirty

5 Stars: Perfect for strong women

Zero Dark Thirty opens with a black screen, playing real 9-1-1 recordings from victims of Sept. 11. They are simply bone-chilling.

Next, we are taken to a CIA “black site”, a nameless place far from American soil, where suspected members of Al-Qaeda are subjected to “enhanced interrogation” techniques like waterboarding.

Good-looking Dan has wild brown curls and a clear, authoritative voice. He tells his current captive Ammar , “You lie to me, I hurt you.” And the lies and hurting proceeds.

Zero Dark Thirty

Also in the interrogation session is another agent, slight of build and wearing a black hood. When the agent removes the hood, we shockingly realize she is a woman. Maya doesn’t necessarily like being in the torture business, but she’s so obsessed with finding Osama bin Laden, she sinks to the occasion.

Back in the United States, Maya spends long weeks that turn into years of scavenging the smallest of leads trying to find bin Laden’s location. Eventually, after chasing numerous red herrings and the death of several of her co-workers in a suicide bombing, Maya locates a large home in Abbotabad, Pakistan, that has high walls and a covered patio. There are three adult women living in the home, but only two adult men have been sighted. Maya has reason to believe a third man is being hidden in the home.

With this information, Maya must not only convince the rest of the CIA that she’s found bin Laden, but persuade a rugged team of Navy SEALs to risk their lives to kill him. No small feat.

Zero Dark Thirty

What’s most impressive about Zero Dark Thirty is that it is a woman’s story — a woman with the vision, intelligence and tenacity to scour the globe and hunt down this modern-day monster. So many other directors could have made this a sentimental journey about a woman searching for the strength to follow through on such an ambitious task, but not Kathryn Bigelow.

Just like in the Hurt Locker, Bigelow shows the audience every dirty twist and turn, every morally blurry situation that war brings about. She doesn’t preach that torture is right or wrong, she presents it for the audience to decide.

Chastain is fantastic as Maya, the prickly go-getter responsible for finding bin Laden. Though her pretty red hair and petite stature give her a fragile appearance, her roar is as loud as a lion’s.

Bottom line: This isn’t an easy movie to watch due to the scenes of torture and killing, but the last 45 minutes when the Navy SEALs make the journey to bin Laden’s compound, will blow your mind. We all know one of the Black Hawks crashed, but to see it go down is simply harrowing.

Zero Dark Thirty is 2 hours and 37 minutes.

Remove rosemary sprig and discard. Remove about half the cooked beans and puree until creamy. Reserve whole beans and cooking water. Set aside.
  3. In a third saucepan, saute celery, carrot, onion and remaining garlic in a drizzle of olive oil over medium-high. After about 10 minutes, add tomato puree and remaining rosemary. Reduce heat to low. Add the pureed and whole beans. Ladle some of the water from the beans in to achieve a creamy and soupy consistency. Simmer soup for about 20 minutes, adding more water if needed. Add cooked farro. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Before serving, drizzle with olive oil.
