Researchers are working on a bra that can detect breast cancer

But many cases aren't detected early on, especially if it grows with symptoms that aren't easily recognizable. A team of researchers at Colombia's National University is hoping to change that with a new bra they say will be able to detect breast cancer.

More: Your bra can't give you breast cancer and other boob myths you can forget

According to one of the developers, the anti-cancer bra contains infrared sensors that monitor and record breast temperatures and provide warnings if irregularities are detected.

"When you have cells in your mammary glands that are anomalous, the body needs to send more blood to that specific part of the body, and the temperature of this organ increases," Maria Camila Cortes, an electrical engineering student at Colombia’s National University, told Fusion.

More: My first mammogram almost scared me to death

In addition to the sensors, the bras will have three lights that deliver a reading after a few minutes — green means no problems, yellow means another test is needed, and red indicates that the wearer should consult her doctor. An embedded chip also records temperature readings for later use by doctors.

The bra is still to be tested and won't be available for some time, but researchers hope it'll become an indispensable tool to help doctors fight the deadly cancer.

"We don’t want to replace a doctor’s job," researcher Maria Jaramillo told Fusion. "The idea is to develop a technique that will help with [early] detection.”

Zara managers allegedly told a woman that her braids weren't 'professional'

Cree Ballah told the CBC that she went to work at the Toronto store on March 23 when a manager told her to take her boxer braids out. That manager went to get a second manager, who then pulled Ballah aside to "fix" the situation.

More: Free People slammed for misappropriation with its festival collection

"They took me outside of the store and they said, 'We're not trying to offend you, but we're going for a clean professional look with Zara and the hairstyle you have now is not the look for Zara,'" Ballah said.

Other employees and customers could see as the managers tried to "fix" her hair.

"It was very humiliating... it was unprofessional," Ballah, who identifies as biracial, told the news network. "My hair type is out of my control and I try to control it to the best of my ability, which wasn't up to standard for Zara."

More: Australian woman, 90, rocks a bikini better than anyone

But — get this — Zara reps told the CBC that they have no set policy for hair, only asking that it looks "professional." What's professional, however, is apparently up for interpretation.

This isn't the only recent story like this to come out of Canada. Earlier this year, a server at a Toronto restaurant said she was sent home for not keeping her natural hair "down her back" as managers mandated.

As for Ballah, she plans to quit and file a formal complaint with the Ontario Human Rights Commission. "My hair type is also linked to my race, so to me, I felt like it was direct discrimination against my ethnicity in the sense of what comes along with it," she said.

Game of Silence's youth detention center completely horrified me

$

Game of Silence is one of those shows that quickly draws you into the plot because of how real it seems. From the relationships to the politics, you feel like everything in the pilot's story line is something that could plausibly happen. There is one aspect, however, that I hope to God isn't an accurate portrayal.

I'm talking about Game of Silence's depiction of a juvenile correctional facility.

The images in the flashbacks of when Jackson, Gil, Shawn and Boots were incarcerated are haunting. From the abuse doled out by guards, to the cage fighting and back to the chilling moment when the boys are tied up and dragged away by other inmates during the riot scene, Game of Silence's picture of being locked up as a child is horrifying.

More: The Law & Order: SVU season finale is so major, it made Mariska Hargitay cry

The sequences are realistic enough that it makes you wonder if the same horrible things could be happening to kids in actual facilities — and the craziest thing is we don't even know exactly what warden Roy Carroll did to the boys yet.

The worst part? Jackson, Gil, Shawn and Boots were far from delinquents when they were sentenced to do time. They were kids who made a bad decision and received a punishment that didn't fit the crime — something that I personally know happens in the real world.

Game of Silence still

When I was 14 years old, I knew a girl at school who had a house party when her dad and stepmother went out of town. The party got out of control and a neighbor called the police because they thought the place was being robbed. The party ended with a SWAT team surrounding the premises and ordering everyone out at gunpoint.

Long story short, her stepmother pressed charges and she ended up going to juvie. This wasn't a hardened criminal. This was a young, fun-loving teen who's only crime was perhaps loving Boone's Strawberry Hill a little too much. I don't remember her exact conviction, but she ended up doing five months, the last of which she was on release to attend classes. She would come to school from jail in the morning, telling terrifying stories of how the other girls there would fashion their toothbrushes into shivs and how she couldn't sleep at night because she was afraid someone would hurt her.

More: Making a Murderer lawyer may know who really killed Teresa Halbach

Did she deserve to be grounded for the better part of sophomore year? You betcha. But did she deserve for a judge to send her to jail and throw away the key? No way. The same thing goes for the characters in Game of Silence.

As we've learned through recent true crime shows like Netflix's Making a Murderer, sometimes having the wrong people in your life or being in the wrong place at the wrong time or just one little lapse in judgment can change the course of your life forever.

It will be interesting to see how being incarcerated as children will play out for the characters in Game of Silence. As frightening as the first scenes of Season 1 were, I have a feeling the worst is yet to come.

Carole Radziwill shows Bethenny Frankel how to handle a sensitive issue

Carole Radziwill is the one beacon of sane hope on The Real Housewives of New York. No matter what drama the ladies brew up (whether during vacation or in the city) Radziwill always seems to be above it all. Not in a boring way, but in an “I’m an actual adult” way. Earlier today she gave another example of why she’s the classiest Housewife in New York.

She sat down to an interview with Us Weekly to talk about all the drama that’s already happening on the season, particularly Jules Wainstein’s weight and Bethenny Frankel’s opinion of her weight. And like an adult, she quickly avoided giving an opinion about another woman’s weight.

More: Bethenny Frankel can't figure out the difference between catching up and gossiping

She said, “You know, I let her talk about it when she felt comfortable talking about it, and she’s pretty open about her weight issues, and it’s a very complicated issue and when you’re navigating new friendships.”

It’s important to say that Wainstein is a skinny woman, and if they were closer friends, it would be a completely different story. Girlfriends should feel comfortable stepping in if there’s a problem. But these women barely know each other. So Radziwill keeping her opinions to herself is the most decent and kind thing to do.

More: The RHONY reunion looks like a hot mess, thanks to Ramona (VIDEO)

Radziwill admitted that she may not have done everything the right way when it comes to Wainstein’s weight. She said, “I can’t say it was a smooth road, talking about all that. It was a bumpy road, but we go down the road and talk about it.”

And that’s why I nominate her as the best Housewife in New York. She’s not afraid of supporting people through the hard stuff and she very rarely talks behind people’s backs. Especially if it’s someone she just met.

More: Bethenny Frankel calls nutritionist out for body-shaming her

I just want Frankel to take notes from Radziwill. Because she is really funny and a great addition to the show, she’s just not always great at lifting up her friends, let alone other women.

Counting On's Jessa Duggar, Ben Seewald get an embarrassing cultural shock

More: 13 facts about Anna Duggar's life before she married Josh Duggar

On Tuesday's new episode of Counting On, the family worked on finishing the tree house, Jill gave her sisters and Anna a list of stuff to bring her on their upcoming trip to Central America, Jinger took photos and gave us more reasons to wish for her escape from her family, and Ben and Jessa went on a trip to St. Louis so Ben could attempt to become a hip-hop star.

More: Amy Duggar's husband outs the Duggar family for ignoring the Josh Duggar scandal

I think we can all agree that the Duggar kids are not the most well-rounded humans on the planet and so probably no one was that surprised when it turned out none of them could explain what hip-hop was. It's either that or they did know what it was, but were trying not to be super offensive — or their version of super offensive. Either way, it was awkward, but not nearly as awkward as Ben's attempt to rap in the presence of Flame, the Christian hip-hop artist he and Jessa had gone to St. Louis to hang out with. Apparently, Ben had been listening to some Christian hip-hop as of late, and since he's married to a reality TV star, he now has access to folks like Flame and can just pop into his studio. At any rate, Flame suggested that Ben rap, and he did, and it was excruciating. Like the turn your TV down, if not off, leave the room to regroup kind of excruciating.

Later, while Ben went with Flame on a tour of the "inner city," Jessa went out with Crystal, Flame's wife, and Crystal's sister to an Indian restaurant. I'm assuming the Duggars aren't well acquainted with spicy foods, so between this and the hip-hop music, Jessa and Ben might as well be rebelling. Jessa, of course, got right to it with Crystal and asked her where she was "really" from, because of course she had no idea what a seriously offensive question that is. You could tell her mind was all sorts of blown by learning about Crystal and Flame's traditional Indian wedding — I'm assuming the Duggars don't learn about such things as other cultures and religions in their homeschool curriculums. Lest you think no one learned anything on the trip, after hearing Flame's story of growing up in St. Louis, Ben is now interested in ministering in the "inner city." Is there even a point in telling him that that's some coded, racist language? No? Can I at least imagine that when the cameras weren't around, Flame pulled Ben aside and explained a few things? Whatever, I'm doing it anyway.

Dance Moms had me in tears with the Zieglers' emotional exit

The Ziegler girls' eventual Dance Moms departure has felt inevitable for some time, and yet, until tonight, it was impossible to imagine the show without these two integral ALDC members. The bad news didn't even fully hit home last month, when Maddie Ziegler made the official announcement. That all changed during tonight's episode, with Melissa Gisoni finally admitting what we all knew and didn't care to admit to ourselves: The Zieglers are finished with the ALDC.

This moment has been a long time in the making, but I still wasn't prepared. No more weekly Maddie solos? No more comments about eating chips from Mackenzie? I'm just getting over Chloe Lukasiak's exit and now it's time to say goodbye to another two of the original girls.

Dance Moms
Image: Lifetime

This marks the end of an era for the family that has been instrumental in putting Dance Moms on the map. Yes, Lukasiak and the Hyland sisters — and even Cathy Nesbitt-Stein and her daughter Vivi-Anne — also played a vital role, but ultimately, there's only one Maddie Ziegler.

More: 5 signs Maddie Ziegler has already checked out of Dance Moms

The best word to describe tonight's emotional episode of Dance Moms is bittersweet. Yes, the Ziegler girls have a great future ahead of them, but they are also leaving behind their best friends and biggest mentor. Their departure is also a poignant reminder that, outside of Nia Frazier (and, according to the delusional Jill Vertes, Kendall), all of the original girls of Dance Moms are gone. The show has already felt incomplete without the antics of best buds Chloe Lukasiak, and Brooke and Paige Hyland, and now, there are another two pairs of dance shoes Lifetime must fill.

More: Trashing Dance Moms' Kendall Vertes is not OK

The Twitterverse is usually a cesspool of drama after each week's Dance Moms episode, but this week, everybody (even those who used to complain endlessly about Miller's favoritism) was very emotional about the Zieglers' departure.

With the Zieglers basically out of the picture, the big question is, what's next? The obvious path for Lifetime is a battle to become the next Maddie. But that plot has already been explored at length. Perhaps the mini team will be featured more prominently? Or, perhaps, Miller will quit, as she's been threatening to do for some time. Only time will tell, and only time will enable Dance Moms fanatics to get over the Zieglers' exit.

Are you sad about Maddie and Mackenzie Zieglers' Dance Moms departure? Or does the show need some new dancers to shake things up?

17 outdoor activities to make the most of spring

$

0

Instead, get out there and soak up the beautiful weather with these fun activities.

1. Ride a bike

Hop on a bike — either solo, with a friend or the whole family — and take a tour of your neighborhood from a new perspective.

2. Fly a kite

The spring winds are perfect for kite flying. Find a park or an open field and get ready to launch — just make sure to stay away from tall trees and power lines!

3. Go on a picnic

It's hard to get the family to gather around the dinner table when spring has finally arrived. Pack up your meal and take it outside, either to your own back yard or a local park, where you can enjoy the weather while you dine.

More: 15 hacks for outdoor dining

4. Explore local trails

It's funny how most of us are less likely to explore the trails that are right outside our own back door. Pick one you haven't explored in a while (or ever) and go take a hike.

5. Play Frisbee

How long as it been since you've played Frisbee? If it feels too simple, make things a little more interesting with a game of Frisbee golf. Bonus points if your dog plays, too.

6. Bird watch

Bird watching may not sound like the most exciting activity, but it's actually a pretty interesting way to start your day. Equip yourself with some binoculars and good birding book or app, then sit quietly and see what you can find.

7. Go camping

Pack a bag, grab your tent, and set up camp. It doesn't matter if you're way out of town, or in your own back yard. There's just something to be said about sleeping under the stars. And spring is the perfect time to do it — before the heat is too sweltering and the bugs are more than you can handle.

8. Play miniature golf

There's no time like spring for a round of miniature golf. It's perfect for date night, or a day out with the whole family, and everyone has a great time.

9. Plant a garden

If you want to enjoy that garden all summer long, you better get planting as soon as the spring weather is warm enough.

More: 7 things to think about when planting a garden

10. Go to a baseball game

Even if you're not a baseball fan, you should definitely make it a point to take in at least one game each spring. The fans, the music and the food are enough to make for an unforgettable experience, and you might even become a fan before the night is over.

11. Pick flowers

The spring is all about the blooms, just stay away from the pretty ones in your neighbor's yard!

12. Go to a petting zoo

Petting zoos are fun any time of year, but in the spring, they're filled with brand new babies that are even more fun to cuddle.

13. Play in the rain

Come on, you know you want to. The next time you get a good downpour, grab your rain boots, but ditch the umbrella.

14. Barbecue

Don't spend a gorgeous spring evening slaving over a stove. Bring the food outdoors and enjoy some fresh air while you cook. Plus, everything tastes better when it's been cooked on a grill.

15. Take an evening stroll

Spring evenings are a magical time of day. It's quiet, cool and the perfect time for an after-dinner stroll.

16. Feed some wildlife

Birds, squirrels, chipmunks, ducks and more and showing their faces again this time of year, and you can bet they're all hungry. Give them a free meal and get a chance to watch nature in action.

More: Make this DIY bird feeder

17. Take in a show

As soon as the weather warms up, outdoor concerts and other performances start to fill calendars. Grab a blanket or a lawn chair and take in some entertainment under the stars.

Team Christina has an advantage after disappointing Playoffs on The Voice

Christina Aguilera has received a lot of flak for her decisions thus far on The Voice, and I've certainly contributed my fair share of critiques. But when it comes down to it, Team Christina is the strongest on the show. Who else could've closed out last night's episode half as well as Alisan Porter? Aguilera's other singers were also amazing in their own right during yesterday's live episode. Unfortunately, the picture wasn't quite as pretty this evening.

More: The Voice prediction: Christina Aguilera will break the girl curse

It's been evident for some time that Aguilera has managed to snag this season's best singers, but this became painfully obvious tonight, when the members of Team Adam and Team Pharrell took the stage. The singers just weren't as polished as their counterparts last night. In fact, a couple of this evening's performances were downright painful. At this point in the season, mediocre performances just don't cut it, and sadly, mediocre would actually be a generous critique for a few of tonight's singers.

More: Miley Cyrus' crazy outfits don't detract from her wisdom on The Voice

That's not to say that all of the performances were terrible. There were definitely a few bright spots in an otherwise disappointing episode. For example, Shaylah Fearing sounded amazing, as always. But because she was so good (and because the others... weren't) she should have been given the opportunity to end the episode on a high note. She would have offered nearly as impressive a final performance as Alisan Porter did last night.

The silver lining in all this is that it once again shows that Christina Aguilera has a great chance of snagging the show's first victory for a female coach. However, it would be nice to see her emerge victorious from a season featuring consistently impressive performances, rather than one letdown after another.

What did you think of tonight's episode of The Voice? Does it prove that a Team Christina singer is destined to win the show? Or was it just an off night for Team Adam and Team Pharrell? Comment and share your opinion below.

People need to back off the Megan Fox paternity debate

$

Megan Fox is pregnant with her third child. The actress showed off her baby bump during CinemaCon in Las Vegas last week. Although she didn’t directly answer any questions on the red carpet, there’s no mistaking the bump. Unfortunately, as soon as people learned about her pregnancy, they started speculating about the father instead of celebrating this exciting news.

More: Sources confirm Megan Fox is pregnant

Fox filed for divorce from her husband, Brian Austin Green, back in August, citing irreconcilable differences. But clearly the two have been quietly working through the differences in their relationship, which is how they got baby no. 3. The couple shares custody of their two sons Noah, 3, and Bodhi, 2.

The news of the pregnancy was reportedly a surprise to both Fox and Green, but they’re over the moon about the news. Unfortunately, everyone else seems to be more concerned with the drama than the celebration. Immediately, people wanted to know if Green was the father and what that meant for their relationship. And every other prying question they could think of.

More: Megan Fox is engaged to Brian Austin Green, again

It’s as if people forget how to have manners as soon as they see someone star in a movie or a television show.

Fox showed that she’s unaffected by the gossip and drama by joking about the baby’s father on her Instagram. She posted a collage of Shia LaBeouf, Will Arnett and Jake Johnson with a caption that said “#notthefather,” which is just the perfect way to handle the situation.

More: Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green shock the world with their latest decision

She doesn’t need to answer any questions about her choices. She doesn’t need to explain the status of her relationship with Green — it’s obviously complicated. All she needs to do is stay healthy for her new baby and celebrate her growing family.

What we need to do is back off and let her.

Beyoncé's daughter turns 4 and all anyone wants to talk about is her hair

$
0
0

Being in the public eye comes with criticisms for every step you take and outfit you wear. And in the case of Beyoncé and her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, 4, it is no different. However, the reasoning here does not only come from a place of rudeness. It comes from a place of anti-blackness.

Beyoncé's sister, Solange Knowles, shared a photo from Blue Ivy's birthday party this week, and the debate over the little girl's hair and the way her mom cares for it came fast and furious.

Blue Ivy

Blue Ivy

The criticisms of little Blue’s hair have been ongoing in her short four years of life, and they are usually centered around her hair needing to be straighter, needing to be further away from Afros and tight coils, and closer to straighter hair, or a curl pattern that some people just do not have. Although this time around the comments are generally more positive (most anyway), it seems people just can't stop focusing on how a mama takes care of her girl's hair.

More: Stranger drops mom a nasty note that calls her kid a 'wild animal'

There is nothing objectively worse or less manageable about natural hair, but if you take care of a hamster the way you would take care of a puppy, you’re going to run into some issues. The issue is that black hair is simply different, but anti-blackness convolutes it into being worse: something unmanageable, unkempt and uncouth.

Anti-blackness, as the name suggests, is the distrust, hatred, or dislike for black people: our hair, our features (like big lips or wide noses or large backsides), our clothing, our music, etc. In America, this anti-blackness stems from the hundreds of years of slavery, dozens of years of segregation and the racism that has been ongoing from those years into the present day. Racism has positioned blackness against whiteness as a binary, where one of which is always, or nearly always, seen as more desirable, prettier, smarter and/or better.

More: Just one sentence changed everything I did as a mom

Most parents have seen a child at the park or the store or wherever else whose long straight hair has not been combed that day: maybe she refused to have her hair combed, maybe he just woke up from a nap, there could be innumerable reasons. They're kids! But white and otherwise nonblack children are not told they need to chemically alter their hair in order to be presentable, nor do their moms deal with this sort of constant discussion of how they're caring for their kids' hair.

And here is the kicker: black people — men, women, girls, boys and everyone in between — are told this every day. Our hair is made a dress code violation, told it is unprofessional for the workplace and essentially banned in the armed forces. Moms like Beyoncé are called out for not "brushing" their kid's hair. Many try to downplay the anti-blackness inherent in these situations, but there is no valid excuse.

More: People stare at me because my kids' skin doesn't look like mine

So this is for everyone of every color who has ever had ant-black thoughts or feelings, for everyone who ever said or thought that the way that their hair grows out of their head is not “for them,” for anyone who thinks their natural features are beautiful or good enough because they do not match the societal standard: You are beautiful exactly the way you are. Do not try and change the lovely uniqueness of yourself or your kids because you’ve been made to believe otherwise.

And to the bullies picking on a toddler and her mom: Grow up, educate yourself and stop perpetuating anti-blackness.

Khloé Kardashian may actually get divorced from Lamar Odom this time

Khloé Kardashian may have publicly said goodbye to her ex-husband Lamar Odom earlier this week, but the two are technically still married. Fans (and, we bet, Kris Jenner) have been wondering if and when the two will make the split official. According to People, it looks like Kardashian is getting ready to start divorce proceedings.

More: Khloé Kardashian is done being the good guy, and we don't really blame her

Kardashian initially put a halt to the proceedings when Odom fell into a coma after an overdose last October. Now that he's on the road to recovery and, rumors say, out drinking again, she's not interested in calling herself his wife. "She doesn't agree with some of Lamar's choices in the past few weeks," a source tells People. "She plans on refiling for divorce soon. She and Lamar are just figuring out the finances first."

The source continues, "Khloé was there for Lamar when he needed her. She spent months making sure he got the best care and was able to recover. Lamar was her main focus, and it was draining for her. Lamar is ready to be on his own now."

More: Leave it to Khloé Kardashian to floor us with her teenage dating stories

Kardashian was spotted out with her ex French Montana this weekend, just a few hours after writing her pointed note on Instagram. Could a reunion with an old flame be one reason why she's so ready to move on? Time  — and probably next season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians — will have the full story.

Teacher wins a twerking contest, then loses her job for it

We'll never forget the infamous twerk of Miley Cyrus at the 2013 MTV VMA awards. Since then the act of "twerking" has become widely recognized, and the Internet is full of clip after clip of people, ranging from senior citizens to spunky toddlers, all sharing their rendition of the dance. And though our culture rarely even blinks twice at twerking anymore, one teacher actually lost her job because of it.

More: My kids has two moms, so stop asking 'Who's the dad?'

A 24-year-old elementary school teacher who has been identified as "Carla," entered a twerking contest at the Mango Deck Restaurant, Bar & Beach Club at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. Carla won the contest and took home $260 in prize money. Her twerking was recorded and uploaded to Facebook, and, you guessed it, went viral.

The school that Carla worked at is located in the Mexican town of Ciudad Obregon. Once they caught wind of her dancing, she was forced to resign upon returning to work from her vacation. The school's principal and lawyers are alleged to have called her immoral, immature and, most shockingly — a whore.

More: Angry mama shows her kids what happens when you take a gun to an iPhone

Wait a second — when did twerking begin to merit such unnecessary name-calling? And is doing such a dance really grounds for someone to lose their job? She isn't a nun; she's a teacher!

Our kids' teachers work hard. They're tasked with the duty of educating our children and aiding in their transition to become fully functional, independent adults. There's a lot of things our children's teachers wish we knew, including the fact they their job is not an easy one. Teaching is a tough profession, and it's understandable that a teacher might want to cut loose every now and then, right? We all do!

More: The 'M-word' we need to be careful using in front of our girls

Twerking teachers are hardly even a blimp on the radar of other concerns that need to be addressed when it comes to our children's education. It's not like she was breaking any laws or teaching "An Introduction to Twerking" to some 5-year-olds. She was on her vacation and being a perfectly law-abiding citizen; nothing she did had any ill effect on her students, yet she was called immoral and asked to resign.

As long as they aren't breaking the law, what teachers do with their free time is really none of anyone else's business, including ours. If teachers want to twerk, let them twerk!

12 reasons why pressure cookers are the new slow cookers

$
0
0

I grew up in a suburban Houston household where my Mom’s kitchen constantly emitted loud noises as if it were a vehicle itself: the Osterizer blender for chutneys, the metal pots clanging, fresh curry leaves splattering in hot oil and, most obnoxiously loud of all, the old-school pressure cooker’s whistle blowing a few times every day, starting right around 5 p.m.

In that pressure cooker were two stacked pans, one with hot basmati rice and another filled with a sour-sweet lentil curry. While the two dishes cooked, Mom and I rolled out and pan-baked the Indian flatbreads known as chapatti. Dinner was served in 30 minutes, by 5:30.

To me, this vessel is a must-have in the kitchen, saving time even with complicated Indian food.

More: Pressure cooker pork and hominy stew

I've been using my old pressure cooker from India for years, but when I started teaching cooking classes, I couldn’t believe how many students didn’t have experience with one.

Here are just a few ways a pressure cooker makes my dinnertime easier, healthier and still just as tasty. It allows me to have a variety of types of foods and cuisines because, frankly, I need more than just Indian food in my life.

More: Back to school pressure cooker recipes

1. No more canned beans.

With a pressure cooker, you can cook dried beans in minutes, pre-soaked or not. I put these in salads, have taco night or use them in Mediterranean and Indian recipes.

2. Less kitchen mess.

With a pressure cooker, I can often cook a whole meal in the pot or use it twice in a row for multiple recipes. I end up using fewer pots and pans and not even using the stovetop.

3. No boxed broths.

Instead of making a broth on the stovetop, I can make an easy vegetable or chicken stock in minutes. And I can then use that broth as cooking liquid for a meal that same night or freeze it for another day.

4. Making staples without any planning.

For simple foods like steel-cut oats, brown rice, legumes, perfect boiled eggs and applesauce, I don’t even have to plan ahead. If I have the ingredients on hand, it's cooked in minutes. Sometimes I'll make things while I'm in the shower, taking out the trash or going for a short walk or errand.

5. Making one-pot meals.

It's easier to make meals like chicken and rice, curries, casseroles, chicken noodle soup, stews, taco filling, gumbo, curries, soups and even pasta dishes (with raw pasta going right into the vessel).

6. Making desserts.

You can make cheesecake, apple cake, lemon curd and custards.

8. More exposure to new foods.

My kids will try more foods if I use a pressure cooker, again because the time investment is lower than “regular” cooking, so I have time to create more things.

9. No issues with forgetting to defrost.

In a pressure cooker, the pressure builds up appropriately and enough for frozen foods to thaw and cook within a given time. But, of course, you’d have to consult your manual to be sure about cook times.

10. Healthier eating.

Some pressure cooker fans say it helps foods retain more nutrients. The evidence isn't conclusive, yet. But I would just say that if a pressure cooker gets you to do more cooking at home, mostly from scratch, that makes for healthier eating.

11. No danger.

Many home cooks fear pressure cookers because of old stories from their grandmothers, who would tell kitchen tales of pressure cookers exploding and not being safe to use. In my 25 years of using a pressure cooker, old-school or new styles, this has never happened to me. In fact, most pressure cookers are now electric.

12. Versatility.

The newer, electric pressure cookers have loads of features, like programming capabilities. Many have multiple functions like yogurt-making and slow-cooking.

The Little Women: LA drama has made its way crashing into Briana Renée's wedding day.

More: Little Women: LA drama heats up over Briana's bachelorette party

Not only has she had to contend with fights among her friends and family over the disapproval of her soon-to-be husband Matt Ericson, but the morning of her wedding is filled with stress as Renée gets ready.

Now there's a bomb that might be the biggest shock of Renée's wedding yet when Christy McGinity Gibel shows up, despite the drama between her and the bride.

SheKnows got the exclusive first look from Lifetime about the moment when the two women come face-to-face.

"I hope this is a good surprise," Gibel says in the clip as she enters the room where Renée is having her hair done.

Renée is initially speechless before responding, "Yeah."

But in her on-camera interview, Renée reveals the truth of her feels. "First Jasmine shows up with the wrong color dress and now Christy's here. I don't think I can handle any more surprises."

Still, Renée puts on a brave face. "Maybe this day is about moving forward," she tells Gibel.

For her part, Gibel tries to be the dutiful friend to make amends. "Do you need a water? Need iced tea? Want me to leave? It's your day. You're the princess. Because you were there for me. You helped me during my wedding day and I [was a] hot mess, remember? You brought me cheese and crackers and you were screaming at people."

Her words touch Renée so much that she begins to cry.

And while it seems like Gibel has good intentions, Renée's best friend Jasmine Arteaga Sorge isn't so sure.

"I have my reservations with her," Sorge admits. "She's a people pleaser. So she just tries to say and do what everybody wants to hear, and she doesn't realize she might be hurting you."

How to cook a big meal using one oven — without ruining dinner

Whether you're prepping for a holiday meal or a big family dinner, one thing's for sure — trying to cook more than one dish in the same oven can seem like a recipe for disaster.

Sure, we all wish we had a stainless steel double oven paired with a fancy fridge and granite countertops. And while we're wishing, why not include a personal chef to prepare all this food? The reality for most of us is that we have only one oven, and it can get stressful when multiple dishes need to be cooked, warmed and ready to eat all at the same time.

Can you cook two or more dishes in the oven at once?

Yes. Most people fret when it comes to cooking two dishes at once, but it's your oven's job to keep the internal temperature set to what you selected. It may have to work a little harder when two or more cold dishes are inserted, but trust that it will do its job.

The dishes will typically take 15 percent longer to cook than if only one is cooking, so adjust the time accordingly. To ensure even cooking, make sure the oven is fully preheated before inserting dishes, and rotate the dishes halfway through.

Can you cook one dish and bake another simultaneously?

Yes, but there are some guidelines you'll need to follow. First, baked goods are not flexible when it comes to temperature. Preheat the oven to what the baked good needs to be at. Most cooked dishes are flexible when it comes to temperature — this includes meats, veggies, casseroles, baked potatoes and the like. It may take a little less or more time for the cooked dish to be done, but it will turn out the same. Baked goods are more of a science, and each variable needs to be precise.

Second, make sure the meat (or main dish) doesn't have a strong flavor, such as garlic. If that's the case, it's best to cook the items separately so the flavors don't cross over.

Tips for cooking multiple dishes

  • Meat is the most flexible. Technically meat can cook at any temperature until it's done. The lower the temperature, the longer it will take, and the juicier it will be. If cooking multiple dishes, set the temperature to what the nonmeat dish requires.
  • Meat stays hot for a while. Large roasts, such as a ham or turkey, will stay hot for an hour after coming out of the oven. Plan on cooking smaller side dishes during this time.
  • Most ovens have a 25-degree variance. If one dish needs to be cooked at 350 degrees F and another at 400 degrees F, set the oven for 375. Most ovens are off by about 25 degrees anyway, so as long as it's set around the required temperature, the dish will turn out fine.
  • Arrange the dishes so there is enough space between them. Air should be able to circulate between all the dishes, so space them out accordingly.

Bristol Palin is apparently getting bombarded with dirty texts from her ex

Bristol Palin shares her son Tripp with Levi Johnston, but that's as far as she wants their relationship to go. Unfortunately, Johnston — who's married with two children of his own — can't seem to take no for an answer.

According to a report in Life & Style, Johnston has been sending Palin racy text messages. There are no screenshots of their exchanges, but a source shares quotes from recent text messages. Johnston's supposed pick-up lines include, "Come cuddle me," and, "Come lay that sexy ass down right up tight next to me and watch a movie with me." They're PG-13, but I think we all get where Johnston is going with the Netflix-and-chill vibe.

Palin has told him to back off, says a source. “[Bristol's] told him she’s not putting up with any of his bullshit,” says Life & Style's source. "[Bristol is] is not a home wrecker and she’s got too much on her plate right now to deal with Levi."

Johnston has been married to Sunny Oglesby for four years. Johnston himself recently told Radar Online that their marriage has been through hard times. "We hit rock bottom. Every goes through bad times,” he said. “Everyone fights or has arguments, there is nothing out of the ordinary about that.” Will his wife think there's something out of the ordinary about sexting an ex?

Woman perfectly calls out salesman trying to age-shame her

Everyone's dealt with this — the pesky salesperson trying to move some beauty products who has a three-step strategy: 1) Lure women in with a compliment about their appearance. 2) Follow it up with a statement designed to play to our insecurity about how we look. 3) Make promises that, in exchange for your hard-earned money, he can make those insecurities go away.

That's just what happened to one Canadian woman, who goes by Annick Rbsn on Facebook, in an airport recently — and her response was perfect.

Anti-aging response

Anti-aging response

Annick writes on Facebook that a man approached her in the airport — a place where any reasonable person would assume people are trying to go about their day in a hurry — to compliment her on her "natural looking" skin and ask her whether or not she was wearing makeup.

He then tries to guess her age — despite not being invited to do so — and attempts to flatter her by picking out a number 12 years younger, but Annick throws him for a loop with her response: "I look my age and that's OK actually," she says.

This is where the salesman tries to whittle away at her confidence. She recalls him trying to scare her into buying his face serums, promising her that her wrinkles will get much deeper as she ages.

But she's not having it. Annick asks: "What's wrong with a woman looking 40?" She then proceeds to list off all of the reasons she's happy to have her wrinkles and "bags" under her eyes: " I have a miracle baby at home and haven't slept in 2 years, so if I have bags I am grateful to have them, and my husband and I laugh a lot."

But the salesman just won't lay off, warning her that if she waits too long, she'll have to have surgery on her eyes if she doesn't buy his beauty products, demanding she shell out $199 for three different creams, while having the audacity to pretend he's giving her a deal because it's "cheaper than Botox."

Annick calls the pesky salesman out for acting as though age is something women should be ashamed of: "Old age is a privilege denied to many, and I don't appreciate you marketing youth, instead of your products, and denigrating aging women as a sales tactic."

More: How the media is promoting unhealthy body image expectations

I love Annick's response to this salesman because she perfectly sums up what I've often wish I'd said to those salespeople who attempt to leverage any appearance insecurity I might be feeling to get me to empty my wallet. These marketing tactics play into the fact that women actually spend a lot more money on personal care products than men, 13 percent more to be exact (according to a study on gender pricing in New York City).

And while Annick is definitely naturally beautiful, she smartly points out that this isn't just about pitting "natural" beauty trends against "fake" beauty trends — because the current natural beauty craze doesn't do women much good, either. We're still focusing on our appearances, only we're trying to pretend that looking good is effortless and easy — and that seems even more damaging to our self-esteem.

Since putting her post on Facebook, Annick was shocked to find it went viral: "It means that in 2016, refusing to accept self-loathing as a beauty standard is a radical concept." Sadly, she's right. In 2016 it's still hard not to listen to companies and people who try to instill body insecurity into us. It's hard not to buy that hair product you're stylist pushes on you when she tells you your hair will look dull and brittle otherwise, and it can be tough not to get pressured into buying expensive wrinkle creams making impossible claims when the salesperson is so persuasive. But let's take a page out of her book and focus on all the reasons we feel happy to look how we do.

So do I have puffy eyes today? Yes, because I was up late working and then had a glass of wine with a friend, and it was a wonderful evening.

I delayed my dreams for over a decade because I was just plain scared

Three events in one year changed my perception of traveling for the worse. First, I nearly drowned in Hawaii while overestimating my surfing ability (I had none). Second, I finally got around to watching the movie Castaway. And third, Sept. 11 happened. There I was, just 21 years old, afraid of swimming in the ocean, of flying over the ocean and of flying in general.

My paranoia got so bad that when we moved to the coast of North Carolina, I nearly had a panic attack the first time I heard the waves crashing on the beach. By then, I was so limited in my travel options that if I couldn’t get to a destination by car, I wasn’t going.

More: A woman went viral for breastfeeding, so why's her husband in trouble?

Long before my fears took root, I had a genuine curiosity about the world abroad. I was one of those Americans infatuated with the Indiana Jones-fueled fantasy of India, believing it to be a country of mystic yogis, painted elephants and snake charmers. I soaked up information about Hindu culture like water on parched earth. I read every book I could find, watched every Bollywood film I could get my hands on and devoured every morsel of buffet Indian cuisine that I heaped on my plate.

I romanticized the hell out of India and those rosy glasses made me all the more desirous of seeing a country I thought I knew so much about.

Still — to get there meant I had to fly and that was enough to delay my travel plans for over a decade.

Nearly 15 years passed before I seriously considered taking a trip abroad. Fifteen years of playing with an idea and letting fear make the decision for me. I was worried my plane would crash. I was worried that the destination would be too scary or too strange. More than all of these worries, though, was the fear that I would never see the world, and never share that experience with my own sons, who, at 16 and 17 years old, were close to leaving home.

I had to come to terms with my mortality to come to a decision about traveling. I had to face the fact that at some point in my life, I was going to die, and while I don’t plan on being reckless with my existence, I don’t want it to be a lackluster version of what it could have been.

To teach my sons to follow their dreams, I had to allow myself to do the same.

I spent the next eight months saving every penny and reading every travel book imaginable. I questioned friends who either lived in India or who had traveled there before, and slowly, entry by entry, I checked off my to-do list.

Last summer, after what felt like a lifetime of waiting, my husband, sons and I got on a plane, flew first to Tokyo (because it was cheaper than a direct flight to India and we wanted to see Japan, too) and then flew to New Delhi, India.

Did I take Valium before the flight? Absolutely. Did all of my travel fears magically vanish because I made the decision to go? Not in the slightest. But I was no longer going to let fear choose the course of my life.

Our trip was one of the most adventurous, exciting things I’ve ever done. I learned that I have a profound love for Japanese cold noodle dishes and that India, as beautiful and exotic as it is, is nothing like the fantasy I had woven in my mind.

We rode on the subway, ate ramen and sushi and visited the streets of Harajuku while in Japan. In India we bowed our heads in the Golden Temple, touched the cool marble walls of the Taj Mahal, rode in tiny auto-rickshaws and traveled to a monkey-laden hill station.

None of those experiences or the resulting travel bug that bit my sons would have happened had I not learned to place my fears on a shelf and follow my dreams.

In a few months, my now 18-year-old son will be flying to Japan to spend two weeks there with his girlfriend. My 16-year-old wants to go back to Japan, too — but he’d also love to explore Germany. These are dreams and discussions my sons never had before we traveled abroad. Seeing the way travel opened their eyes and added to their bucket lists has made the journey so much more profound.

The way to get over your fear of travel is easier than you may think. You have to decide that the reward is greater than the risk, and you have to be brave enough to take a chance on your desire to see something greater than your own backyard. If I can do it, then what’s your excuse?

6 embarrassing sex stories that will make you die a little inside

As much hype and attention as we give it, sex is just another normal function of the human body — which can only mean it has the potential to get pretty darn embarrassing. While everyone has had at least one sex slip-up before, these cringe-worthy-but-totally-true stories might make you feel better about some of your more forgettable sexual encounters.

1. First time

"One evening after a few drinks, this younger boy and I were lying on the ground with our pants off and making out. We removed our undies and he starts moving his hips back and forth, slowly and then faster and faster," recalls Laura. "His breath got heavier, and then he collapsed on top of me. Mind you, this whole time I just laid there in fear of saying something that would embarrass him because he was a virgin."

"He looked up at me sweetly and asked, 'How w-w-was it for you?' I replied, 'What? You were between my thighs.' He laughed it off, but was super embarrassed. When we finally did get around to actually [doing the deed], it was fantastic."

2. Hi, neighbor

It was 1969 and Dana was a senior at UCLA. "My girlfriend and I were looking for a place to make 'nookie' since my roommate was in my room studying. It was a few days before classes started and the room next door to her room was still vacant, so we went in there and proceeded," Dana explains.

"Then, there was a knock on the door. We froze. Another knock, then the sound of a key going into the lock. Room was pitch dark, so it was just sounds, but we heard voices out in the hall."

"In a panic, I threw a blanket — or something — over my girlfriend, grabbed my pants and tried to pull them on as I headed for the door to keep it from opening. I got to the door with my pants just above my knees when the door opened," he recalls. "Standing in the hall was this sweet young freshman girl with her parents bringing her to her new dorm room! The looks on their faces were priceless. I asked them to give us a few minutes — I mean, what choice did they have?"

3. Whipped cream surprise

"My wife and I decided to add a little spice to our love life by using some aerosol whipped cream. I got the can from the fridge and brought it to our dark bedroom, sprayed it all over her boobs and started to lick it off. It tasted funny and I thought that her skin chemistry was giving the whipped cream an off taste," says John. "It kept getting worse, so I turned on the light. It was all green from mold. She started laughing hysterically as did I. It killed the mood for the night though. I had a queasy stomach all night long."

4. An unfortunate accident

John, who is ironically a marriage, relationship and sexual coach, shares: "My wife and I went out with some friends for bowling and beer. We both had a little too much to drink." However, that didn't stop him from initiating intercourse with his wife that night. "I was happily pumping away with a full bladder. I began to feel the urge to ejaculate (or so I thought in my half drunken stupor). The problem was that I was peeing instead of ejaculating."

5. Caught in the act

Eliza recounts a story from her first year in college. "I was with my boyfriend in his dorm room. His roommate was away for the weekend (or so we thought). I'm under the covers giving him a blow job and having a good time. I don't even hear the key turn in the door or anything — all of a sudden I just hear his roommate talking."

"I just froze. I didn't know what to do," Eliza recalls. "He's just shooting the breeze with my boyfriend, and my boyfriend is trying to just play it off and is holding a conversation like I'm not even there. So I just stayed down there, perfectly still, waiting for him to go. He talks for what seems like is eternity (probably only two minutes). Then I hear him say, 'See ya later... you too Eliza.' I thought I was going to die of embarrassment."

6. Mortifying misfire

"I am the first to admit, I'm not a pro at giving head but I try," says Trisha. "One night, I was pleasuring my new boyfriend and I removed my mouth for a second to breathe when all of a sudden he ejaculated — right up my nose. It felt like I was drowning for a second and I began choking. He thought it was hysterical — I was mortified by the whole thing. I spent the next half hour blowing my nose."
