The Amazing Race's Blair Fowler got what she deserved after not pulling her weight

Everyone knows The Amazing Race is a game where you need both members of the team to be pulling their weight and giving 100 percent effort all the time to be successful. Well, during Week 7, one team in particular showed fans what happens when one person does all the work while the other simply cheers from the proverbial sidelines.

While racing around the country of Georgia, teams found themselves performing some of the most difficult tasks ever featured on the show. Several teams even gave up at various times, proving that the challenges might actually get the better of some of the stronger teams. But it was fair-weather "team" Blair and Scott Fowler who proved that if you don't have both members giving their all, you might be going home.

During the first detour, teams had to make a traditional Georgian candy called churchkhela, which is hazelnuts strung on a string, then dipped in a wine and sugar syrup. All of the teams who chose this detour struggled desperately. It was so difficult that one of the top teams, Korey Kuhl and Tyler Oakley, quit after trying for quite some time and went to try their hand at the other detour choice. When the Fowlers got their turn at the challenge, in perfect Blair fashion, she allowed her father to do the difficult work of stringing the hazelnuts — prompting many a finger prick — while she simply stirred the syrup.

More: The Amazing Race nearly gave fans a heart attack during Week 6

Blair wasn't done passing the buck to her father. When the team got to the roadblock, which required them to learn a very difficult, very fast traditional Georgian dance from the Georgian ballet, she once again differed to her father, telling him that he should learn the dance. By that time, fans had had it up to their eyeballs with Blair's laziness.

More: The Amazing Race debuts its most adorable showmance yet

While the Fowlers and Team Korey and Tyler ended up being the last two teams trying to get past the roadblock, it was Scott who got the nod first — when his daughter struck again.

Trying to be a little helpful (for once), she picks up both her own and her father's backpacks, but she failed to inform him that she did so. When Scott bolted out the door, he grabbed the closest bag he saw... which ended up not being his.

Having to go back and give the bag to Korey and Tyler ended up being the Fowlers' fatal error, allowing the other team to pass them in their taxi and giving them the literal foot they needed to edge Scott and Blair out of the competition in a foot race to the mat.

Fans were sad to see the hardworking Scott go, but no love was lost for the shirking Blair.

Shark Tank's NoPhone is an insult to real entrepreneurs

There have been several terrible products featured on Shark Tank over the years, but tonight's NoPhone was one of the worst yet. Although marketed as a solution to the crippling smartphone addictions faced by so many millennials, the overpriced hunk of plastic featured during an ill-advised segment of the show was really nothing more than a bad gag gift.

More: Shark Tank's Sharks go overboard with health product critiques

Chris Sheldon and Van Gould's unusual pitch began with them staring at their smartphones — a familiar sight for anyone who hangs out with the under-30 crowd.

Once jolted away from their devices, the entrepreneurs made their pitch, and suffice to say, it wasn't very convincing. They referred to the product as "the pet rock of our generation," but they also billed it as a tool for helping phone addicts tune back into the real world. Later, they claimed that, although the NoPhone is technically just a piece of plastic, it's actually much more than a piece of plastic. Sorry guys, but the NoPhone really is just a piece of plastic — and at $18 for the selfie model, it's a huge waste of money. Those who desire a gag gift can find one for far cheaper, and those who wish to kick their phone addictions can find much more effective ways to do so.

The Sharks were both amused and annoyed by the product, which they politely referred to as "poop." Mark Cuban had an especially scathing critique; he claimed that the only thing he hates more than seeing people glued to their phones is a dumb patent.

The NoPhone was harshly criticized not only by the Sharks but also by viewers, who couldn't believe that such a goofy product was featured on the show in the first place. As a few pointed out, the segment felt a bit like a late April Fools' Day joke.

The Sharks are occasionally a bit too harsh with their critiques, but tonight, they were right on point. There are so many hardworking entrepreneurs developing products that people actually need, it's a shame to see two advertising experts highlighted for developing nothing more than a hunk of plastic.

More: Kim Richards is ditching RHOBH for a new show

On the latest episode of The Mother/Daughter Experiment, Courtney Stodden and her mom, Krista Keller, fought about the same thing they've been fighting about since the beginning of the season, and probably for years — the nature of Krista's relationship with Courtney's husband, Doug. After an early morning Mimosa, Heidi Montag's mom, Darlene, worried about her daughter's possible drinking problem, and it made things a bit too real for Kim Richards. The drill this week was a mother/daughter swap, which was like that show, Wife Swap, except way less sexist.

So Heidi may have a drinking problem, or she's just stressed out by being in a house with her mother and everyone else on this show — but, either way, it wasn't particularly funny when Jessica Canseco joked about her being an alcoholic. Heidi pointed out the not-awesome nature of that comment by reminding her that "some people" had actual alcohol problems. Kim assumed that Heidi was referring to her, and she wasn't happy about being discussed. I think we can safely say that Heidi was actually talking about Kim, but in case she wasn't, Kim made sure to remind Heidi, and America, about her time spent in rehab and her recovery.

More: Kyle Richards makes her feelings toward Brandi Glanville very clear

When it was time for the mother/daughter swap, Kim was paired up with Courtney and, this time the drill didn't elicit a freak out. It did, however, provide another opportunity for Kim to talk about herself when she gives Courtney advice about how to deal with her mother. (Lord knows the girl needs advice, but I'm not so sure she needs it from Kim!) Kim didn't name Kyle specifically when she talked about fighting with a family member, but I think we're all assuming that that's who she meant, although Kim's health issues over the last few years have definitely taken their toll on more than one of her sisters and children. Her fight with Kyle has been the most public, of course. In the context of her family stress, Kim urged Courtney to try and repair things with her mother.

I'm on the fence about this one. Courtney's mom had a super-inappropriate relationship with Courtney's HUSBAND and, until this week, has taken zero responsibility for it. Whatever happened with Kyle, we are definitely not talking about the same kind of thing (unless we are, in which case, yikes). The point is, most of this episode wasn't even about Kim — the focus was pretty intensely on Courtney and Krista and their unbelievable mess, and it seemed like Kim was trying to shoehorn herself in so she was more a part of things than she should have been naturally. Guess what? It totally worked, and that's why Kim's on TV, and I'm not.

The Vampire Diaries reminds us why being a vampire is awesome

The Vampire Diaries apparently wants Stefan (Paul Wesley) to learn the hard way that being human isn't all it's cracked up to be.

More: 9 best The Vampire Diaries couples through the years

I couldn't help but laugh along with tonight's episode as Stefan is thrown into the body of an alcoholic murderer after the phoenix stone was destroyed.

Clearly, the only thing that could make Stefan the "damsel in distress," as Damon (Ian Somerhalder) put it, in the brothers' relationship is an alcoholic, human murderer in the process of freezing to death. Otherwise, Stefan is the hero and Damon is the troublemaker.

The tables were definitely turned tonight. Which was good, since Damon had some serious redeeming to do after he left Stefan hanging with that X on his chest from Rayna.

More: 16 Vampire Diaries Klaroline moments that are swoon-worthy

This was a good episode to remember that the brothers really are at the heart of the show. And I was ready for some really good, witty one-liners from Damon, which we definitely got tonight. Aside from the damsel in distress line, Damon also had a poignant moment at the end of the episode.

He tells Stefan, "I'm selfish. I'm angry. I'm impatient. Until I met Elena, I wasn't interested in doing the right thing for anybody."

And Stefan, in turn, finally voices the pain he has at never being Damon's priority. Stefan has saved Damon time and time again, yet Damon would turn his back on Stefan in an instant it seems.

Until tonight.

More: The Vampire Diaries crossover delivered on an epic Klaroline moment

Damon wants to get his brother back into his rightful body — which means Stefan should eat a lot more of those donuts while he can. Because Damon is on a mission for his brother, and I have a suspicion that, this time, he won't fail him.

Did you think tonight's episode of The Vampire Diaries was the most heartwarming episode so far this season?

Don't let heartworms come between you and your pet

$
0
0

Heartworm is a serious condition that affects many pets, especially dogs, every year. It affects both domesticated and wild animals alike. Heartworm can lead to severe lung disease and heart failure, damage other organs in the body and even cause death.

What causes heartworm?

Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes. Dr. Marcus Smith, DVM of Chattahoochee Animal Clinic further explains that “heartworms are spread via mosquitoes that harbor microfilariae (baby heartworms). When the mosquito feeds, these baby worms enter into the dog or cat. If the dog or cat is not protected by a heartworm preventative, then they will contract the disease.” The microfilariae eventually grow up to a foot long and will live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of the host animal, causing slow damage to these areas unless treated.

Image: francok35/Pixabay

Who is at greatest risk for heartworm?

Every dog is at risk for heartworm. According the American Heartworm Society, heartworm disease has been diagnosed in all 50 states. Dr. Smith says, “Dogs tend to be outdoors more often, so technically they are at a higher risk than cats. Common carriers of heartworm, such as coyotes and foxes, live around urban areas, so the spread via the mosquito is quite easy for the average pet in this country.” If your dog goes outside at all, even just to eliminate, it is at risk. It just takes one bite from an infected mosquito for your dog to contract the disease.

What are the symptoms of the disease?

Dr. Smith says, “Many dogs in the early stages of [the] disease are asymptomatic. However, as the disease progresses, signs become more evident and common, such as weight loss, decreased appetite, exercise fatigue, [becoming] easily exhausted after minimal activity, and coughing. In severe cases, these patients present for labored breathing and heart failure.” Many dogs can go for several months before any symptoms show, which is why it’s important to get your pet tested yearly for the disease.

More: Why you should start paying attention to your dog's anal glands

How is heartworm diagnosed?

At your pet’s yearly vet visit, a heartworm test is usually routine. Dr. Smith says, “It is a very simple, fast, inexpensive test that can be run at almost every veterinary clinic. These tests detect the presence of heartworm proteins.” Your vet should be able to tell you in a matter of minutes if your dog is heartworm positive or not. If the test comes back positive, there are treatment options.

Image: Austin Community College/Flickr

What are the treatment options for heartworm?

Heartworm treatment is expensive and hard on the dog. If you get a positive test result, your vet typically follows up with an X-ray to see how much damage there is, and to determine the amount of adult heartworms that are present in your dog’s heart, blood vessels and lungs. Once you have agreed to have your dog undergo treatment, your vet will want to make sure your pet is healthy and stable before treatment.

“The treatment for heartworm disease is called Immiticide," says Dr. Smith. “This treatment is administered via an intramuscular injection. The shot protocol contains a total of three injections. After the first injection, a second is administered 30 days later, and the third injection on day 31. During this treatment process, it is vital for the pet to be on activity restriction to avoid complications while the worms are dying off.” It’s typical for vets to prescribe an antibiotic and steroids during the treatment to help lessen the chance of a secondary infection as the worms die off and dissolve into your pet’s bloodstream.

Your dog is then placed on restricted activity. All exercise and activity that would elevate your dog’s heart rate or increase blood pressure can force the dying worms through the blood vessels at a high rate. This can cause your dog’s blood vessels to clog with the worms, causing a blood clot. Six to eight weeks following the last injection of Immiticide, your dog will be tested again for heartworm proteins to make sure the heartworms are gone.

What’s the best way to protect your dog from heartworm?

A monthly heartworm prevention medication is the best way to protect your dog from the disease. Most heartworm preventative medications contain ivermectin, selamectin, moxidectin or milbemycin oxime. The medication works by eliminating the larval stages of the heartworm parasite. This includes the heartworm larvae deposited by the mosquito as well as the following larval stage that develops inside the animal. Heartworm preventatives are the most effective and inexpensive method for preventing the disease. According to the American Heartworm Society, you should keep your dog on the preventatives year-round, no matter where you live.

Although heartworm is a serious disease, it’s treatable and preventable. Keep your fur baby protected with monthly preventatives, and hopefully you will never have to deal with the extensive treatment.

Kate Hudson admits she sometimes feels like a bad mom

If there's one celebrity mom who always looks confident, happy and like she's having the most fun of anyone in the room, it's Kate Hudson, a single mom of two boys — Ryder, 12, and Bingham, 4. But the actress recently penned an honest and brave essay for InStyle magazine in which she confessed a thought that keeps many moms awake at night: Hudson says she sometimes feels like a bad mom. As it turns out, being an unconventional mom in Hollywood may fill some of us with envy (I mean, she gets to date Nick Jonas and bring her trendy boho style to her very own athletic line, Fabletics), but that doesn't mean Hudson doesn't question her own parenting skills from time to time.

In the essay, Hudson explains how difficult it is for her to bridge her "wild" ways with her sons' need for a traditional mom. "I was really young, like 23, when I had Ryder," Hudson writes. "So, our relationship has always been [a little unusual]. I mean, we're close, and I am his mom. I'm big on manners. I'm big on politeness. I'm big on gratitude. But I'm a bit of a wild mom."

More: Kate Hudson reportedly tried to make Nick Jonas jealous with a naked pic

Three cheers for Hudson and her "wild mom" ways. Three cheers for any woman, mom or not, who follows her dreams and refuses to hold herself back because society wants her to act a certain way. It's unclear why the Pretty Happy author labels herself "wild" — because she's a free spirit whose Instagram is filled with sexy photos? because she isn't afraid of ending romantic relationships that no longer suit her? — but she doesn't hold back from revealing other mom truths we've been taught to bury.

So far, this one is my favorite: "Some days I feel like I should win best mom of the day award, and some days I find myself doing strange things that don't have any real purpose, in faraway corners in my house, and I realize I am literally and deliberately hiding from my children."

And guess what? Hudson also admits she'd rather be binge-watching The Bachelor than helping her children with their math homework. Bad mom? More like normal human being.

More: Kate Hudson's 14 sexiest Instagram pics

I think women are intrigued by Hudson's freedom and the way she unapologetically lives her life and chooses paths that don't always fit the traditional mom mold (whatever that means nowadays). Perhaps some have questioned whether she's a little too bohemian to give her children the structure and stability they need. But the fact that she's so self-aware and giving of herself in this essay proves she is a thoughtful person who can do both: raise her sons with lots of love and stay true to herself.

Hudson deserves a round of applause for saying some of the things a lot of moms think but would never admit aloud: that motherhood is sometimes boring, other times the greatest challenge of our lives, but always worth it in the end.

Make your food taste exactly like spring with this secret ingredient

What does spring taste like? Strawberries, rhubarb, asparagus and peas, right? Those are the standard springtime ingredients you already know all about. But what about the unsung hero that truly captures the fresh snap and bite of spring?

Ladies and gentlemen, may I reintroduce the radish.

More: 23 spring recipes that will make you fall in love with veggies

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like radish is having a moment right now. It's fresh and crisp and cool, with just the right spicy burn. Something about that just says spring to me.

Your gateway to appreciating radish could be the French way: eaten raw, dipped into softened, sweet cream butter with a sprinkling of sea salt flakes (or salted butter, if that's easier). Ooh la la, that's a lot of fancy with zero effort.

With barely more effort, you could also make this quickie shrimp salad from The Southern Vegetable Book by Rebecca Lang.

Georgia shrimp and radish salad recipe

Serves 4

Hands-on: 20 minutes | Total time: 50 minutes

Shopping for radishes at the farmers market can bring you a choice selection nearly as endless as the colors of Easter eggs. Using two different radish varieties automatically gives this salad a vibrancy of textures, colors and flavors.

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds unpeeled, large, raw shrimp
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon table salt, divided
  • 3/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, divided
  • 1 (4-ounce) watermelon radish, cut into fourths and thinly sliced
  • 4 ounces d’Avignon radishes, thinly sliced
  • 4 green onions, sliced
  • 1/2 cup diced fennel bulb
  • 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh mint
  • Garnish: fresh mint sprigs

Directions:

  1. Peel and devein shrimp, and pat dry. Sauté in a very hot cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat 4 minutes.
  2. Combine shrimp, olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper and next 4 ingredients in a large bowl.
  3. Whisk together orange juice, next 4 ingredients and remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Pour over shrimp mixture, and toss. Serve chilled.

Sage advice: Radishes should be eaten fresh, as the taste is not only impaired by lying a day or two after they are drawn but tough and heavy, which makes them hard on digestion and of course renders them unhealthy. — Mrs. Lettice Bryan in The Kentucky Housewife (1839)

The pope opened a door for divorced women — and that matters a lot

$

In a 256-page statement on family life released just yesterday, Pope Francis signaled that it's time for divorced and remarried couples to be treated differently in the church.

Although the document — titled Amoris Laetitia, or The Joy of Love — covers many topics related to family life, one of the more noteworthy segments of the sweeping piece addresses how the church must open the pathway for divorced and remarried couples to take communion, which is a central sacrament of the Catholic faith. Until yesterday, a divorced person could take communion. but if he or she remarried without obtaining an annulment from the first marriage, the couple would then be barred from taking communion in the future.

More: 11 things we learned about real relationships

Let me say this: I'm not Catholic. I'm a lifelong Protestant, and I know there are significant differences between my faith tradition and Catholicism, including how we understand and participate in communion. To me, though, the pope's statement is still momentous. There are more than 1 billion Catholics in the world, including many of my friends. The pope's reach, however, extends beyond his own church and influences the way that Christians from many backgrounds understand the compassion and love of God. So, it's a big deal when the pope writes, "The church is always called to be the open house of the Father... No closed doors! No closed doors!"

More: We've been a couple since our teens — but spent most of our 11 years together apart

When I was going through my divorce, I dealt with some pretty awful pushback from my church. I don't think that anyone was intentionally trying to hurt me in the process, but there were a handful of people who didn't know me well and questioned my decision. Furthermore, church leaders sided with my ex-husband because he was vocal with them about what was going on — even though he didn't even go to the church until I moved out of the house — and I wanted to deal with the fallout privately. I ended up leaving my church to go to one that felt safer and that my ex-husband didn't know about.

I remember sitting in a pew one day with the priest's words going in one ear and directly out the other. My head was full of confusion, fear and sadness. I didn't want to be divorced. I didn't want people to think less of me, and I didn't want to be a failure. I didn't know what to think anymore about a God who would allow me to go through the present suffering. I certainly hadn't wanted my former church to know all of my business from the lips of an ex-husband who was controlling, vindictive and occasionally frightening.

The only thing that made sense that morning were the words the priest spoke when he placed communion bread into my outstretched hands. "The Body of Christ, broken for you," he said. His eyes twinkled a little bit. I ate the bread and knew that whatever suffering I was going through, Christ had gone through it, too. And he knew me.

For this reason, communion was all I could hold onto from my faith for quite some time. It was a lifeline in my pain and confusion. Beyond my own story, communion is a symbol of God's love for all, no matter the decisions — good or bad — that led them through the church doors.

The pope's encouragement that local parishes consider offering communion to divorced and remarried couples is an important step toward making the life of faith available to all — including those who are perhaps the most keenly aware that they need the love and compassion of God.

Barry Manilow married his longtime manager: 6 things to know about him

It's never too late to find love and make things official. By now, you may have heard the wonderful news: Barry Manilow married his longtime manager Garry Kief at a wedding celebration that took place at his Palm Springs home in 2014. Manilow and Kief pulled a Jennifer Aniston/Justin Theroux on guests, who assumed they were invited to the home for an ordinary party, unaware that the party would suddenly transform into a wedding extravaganza.

Well played, Barry.

More: Barry Manilow's unexpected wedding secret revealed

The famously discreet star may be opposed to living his life like it's an open book, but that doesn't mean he hasn't given fans enough of himself over the years to convince everyone that he has led a colorful life filled with love and interesting experiences. Here are six things you may not know about the happy newlywed.

1. He was married once previously — Manilow married Susan Deixler in 1964 and, although things didn't work out, he once called her the "perfect wife." Deixler, in turn, has had nothing but nice things to say about her ex's relationship with his new husband. The two tied the knot when she was only 19, and he left her two years later to pursue what would ultimately become a hugely successful musical career. It speaks volumes about your character when a woman you hurt years ago hasn't simply forgiven you but also thinks the world of you and supports your choices.

2. He had a high-profile relationship with another woman for many years — In the '80s, Manilow dated a TV production assistant named Linda Allen. Since their split, and despite speculation that followed him everywhere throughout the years afterward, Manilow remained a very private person who didn't divulge details about his dating life. Even after being outed as gay in a biography, he refused to comment about his sexual orientation. Amazingly, few details have been leaked about his relationships, which proves that the people nearest and dearest to Manilow value him enough not to cash in on a cheap story.

3. He is unapologetically private — In 2012, he told The Telegraph, "I am a private guy. You can only come into my world if I invite you in. From the very beginning that was the rule. I learned how to deal with the publicity/press thing. You just say, 'I'm not interested in talking about [that].' Even the names of my dogs! They are my kids, my friends are my friends and my family, they are mine. That's the only way I can survive. I have to keep that to me. I don't want strangers knowing everything. If that happened, that would drive me crazy."

It's refreshing to hear about a celeb who doesn't crave 24/7 attention.

More: Barry Manilow sidelined for bursitis surgery

4. He has been nominated for and won countless awards — Manilow's hot awards streak hit in the '70s, when he won Grammys two years in a row for "Copacabana" and "I Write the Songs" (the latter went to songwriter Bruce Johnston). Throughout his career, he has been the recipient of too many awards to list. Notably, Manilow was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1978 ("Ready to Take a Chance Again" from Foul Play) and, most recently, a Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album in 2016 — that award went to Tony Bennett and Bill Charlap for The Silver Lining.

5. His famous friends include Lana Del Rey and Marilyn Manson — After a photo surfaced a few years ago showing Manilow chatting it up with Lana Del Rey and Marilyn Manson backstage at a German awards show, everyone wanted to know what they could all possibly have in common. Never judge three books by their covers. "We had a great conversation and really connected," Manilow told The Telegraph. He says he wrote Manson a "gushy fan letter" and adores Katy Perry, a celeb he calls "ear and eye candy."

6. He gives major props to his therapist — Manilow has also been more than giving with press over the years about his time spent in therapy, where he says he learned who he was, what impact he has on others and how to forgive people in his life — most notably, his mother, with whom he admits he had a strained relationship growing up. He once even suggested that everyone interview their own parents and take time to learn about them so that they can view them as flawed humans trying their best, not deities.

Manilow may not be standing outside waving a rainbow flag in the pride parade, but he is living life as his authentic self, both by marrying the person he loves and by staying true to himself as a person who craves privacy and security. Sure, Manilow would serve as a fantastic vocal role model in the gay community, but not everyone is comfortable in that role, and that's OK. Congrats to him and Kief for making their statement of love official. Manilow is a legend and a class act.

Kim Kardashian's Snapchat videos reveal how she feels about Rob Kardashian

Perhaps you're wondering how the Kardashian clan is handling Rob Kardashian's engagement to Blac Chyna. Are they holding secret emergency family meetings and discussing what this means to their future? Are they positively fuming? Or are they simply content to use Snapchat to express their feelings about this significant news?

Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner!

Rob shared two funny Snapchat vids taken by Kim that tell you everything you need to know about her DGAF attitude toward her little brother's unexpected engagement. And then, just for good measure, he also posted a Snapchat video showing his bride-to-be twerking — because what else are you going to do on a Friday night when you're young, wealthy and could be dashing off to Brunei for a weekend date, just for the hell of it?

More: You'll never guess where Rob Kardashian & Blac Chyna celebrated their engagement

The first video shows Kim ready for baseball season with the help of special effects. Her greeting: "In honor of Rob's big day," spoken in what could only be described as a voice that reeks of boredom and despair, kind of says it all. She's so over all of this engagement news and gossip.

Kim's sense of humor really comes out in this second video, though. Her fake crying, accompanied by "Rob, we really need to talk," has to be her way of poking fun at the engagement and at the assumption most people have that soon-to-be Chyna Kardashian is about to destroy the fabric of their existence.

Rob and Chyna were best friends until Kylie Jenner hooked up with Chyna's ex-fiance Tyga (with whom she has a baby). Naturally, that complicated matters, but in Chyna's defense, she has maintained when asked that she thinks Kim is "cool." In other words, there is hope yet that these two can move forward for the sake of Rob and keep things civil. Given Kim's lighthearted take on the matter via Snapchat, I feel even more certain this will happen.

But really, I'm just delaying showing you the video you really want to see. Or don't want to see. Either way, here is it — Rob filming Chyna twerking while throwing dollar bills at her derriere. Because, again, Friday night in Beverly Hills, people. Nothing to do.

So, that kind of explains the whole proposal idea in the first place.

Guy sends facts about pandas to Tinder match for 100 straight days

"I matched with a girl this past Christmas but messed up on my first message," Imgur user msang12321 wrote. "I panicked so I did what any sensible person would do...I sent her a panda fact. And then another...and another...for 100 straight days."

He posted every screenshot of the exchange in a (very long) Imgur album, complete with every single one of her reactions. After a while, he wanted to stop, but he kept going because he figured that "maybe this is the highlight of her day" and it would make her happy to know that each day "she will look at her phone and get a new panda fact..."

"Not going to lie. I felt like she was trying to take over..." he said.

Eventually it became a joke between him and his buddies. "I would meet up with some of my buddies and ask how 'The Panda Girl' was doing," he wrote. They'd all laugh, but his buddies advised him to meet her.

His response? The ultimate cop-out: "I like to live in the shadows."

Mmmkay.

Damn, dude… we were with you at first, but now it's time to either put up or shut up. It's obvious she's somewhat interested because otherwise she would've stopped replying — or unmatched you — long ago.

We need to talk about the F-word — no, not that one

$

If you were hanging around Central Park in 1967, you would have been treated to an absurd but delightful sight: over 500 people gathered together to stage a "fat in" to protest the discrimination faced by obese and overweight people by eating junk food, burning diet books and effigies of Twiggy and wearing horizontal stripes. But nearly half a century later, the fat acceptance or fat positive movement is still a fringe movement — even among people and companies in the plus-size fashion industry.

More: Breaking the rules of plus-size fashion

This couldn't have been clearer when a sales associate at an Edmonton plus-size women's retailer, Addition Elle, used the F-word — "fat," that is — on Facebook, landing herself in unexpected hot water. Connie Levitsky proudly wrote in her bio that her position at Addition Elle entailed "Conquering the world, one well-dressed fat lady at a time." But her district manager at the Reitman's-owned store wasn't happy and demanded she take it down (according to Levitsky's account of the situation on Facebook). The consequences didn't stop there, though. First, Levitsky found out her shifts had been suspended, and the next thing she knew, she was fired — all for using the word "fat."

Facebook- Connie Levitsky

Facebook- Connie Levitsky

"Friends, in case you have failed to notice, I am fat. I have been fat my entire life," writes Levitsky in a powerful Facebook post that's since gone viral. She explains that when she uses the word "fat," she's attempting to cast the word in a positive light. But if getting fired proved anything to her, she writes, it's that "internalized hate and stigma against fat bodies still runs rampant." She says that she was "so excited" to work at Addition Elle, given that they cater to women with diverse body types, but following her termination, she was left feeling "angry and disheartened."

More: Plus-size women to Victoria's Secret — We're here too!

Levitsky says she has had some negative feedback on social media for her attempt to reclaim the word "fat."

"My comments regarding the clientele of Addition Elle were not meant to harm anyone in any way," she explains. "I also understand that not everyone is OK with being fat or being referred to with that particular word."

For Levitsky, accepting her body type has been a painful but rewarding process: "I have spent years hating the way I look. The word 'fat' used to cut me like a knife," she writes. But now she encourages other women to embrace the fat acceptance movement, too, using the hashtag #‎IAmFat.

I am fat

I am fat

Levitsky is certainly not the only fat positive social media user to deal with negative backlash about her online presence. While the hashtag #fatpositive may turn up tons of fierce photos on Instagram shared by users proudly showing off their curves, the comments on those posts almost always inevitably have people trolling these users. For instance, Instagram user @shayracha says that while she received plenty of positive messages about photos she posted about herself, she still receives several messages from people suggesting that she kill herself. So, given the extent to which fat positive bloggers and social media users are trolled, Levitsky is adding to a much-needed conversation about body positivity.

Fat acceptance

Fat acceptance

After her initial post went viral, Levitsky says Addition Elle contacted her to apologize, assuring her that the company did not condone the handling of her particular situation and had taken steps to prevent other employees from having a similar experience. They even offered Levitsky her job back, but she declined the offer.

"I think this has become so much bigger than me getting fired from my job this morning," says Levitsky in a video on Facebook. "I honestly can't tell you how amazing it feels to have so many positive comments and people sharing my status."

It looks like, in her own way, Levitsky is still managing to "conquer the world" and inspire others by spreading the word about body positivity "one well-dressed fat lady at a time."

How to arrange a swank-looking cheese board like it's nothing at all

$

0

My husband and I love to entertain. We are constantly hosting weekly meetings, parties, impromptu get-togethers with friends and large family gatherings. Give us any excuse to invite people over, and we will.

When it comes to entertaining, I've learned that appetizers are essential. And when it comes to appetizers, there's nothing that will excite guests quite like an artfully arranged cheese board and glass of wine.

Five Steps for Creating an Amazing Cheeseboard 1
Image: Elise Whittenburg/SheKnows

Oftentimes I just make a last-minute rummage through the pantry and fridge for whatever cheese, crackers, deli meats and olives or pickles we happen to have on hand and arrange it all on a pretty platter.

Five Steps for Creating an Amazing Cheeseboard 2
Image: Elise Whittenburg/SheKnows

Other times I put a lot more thought into planning and hit the local grocery for some special ingredients. Add a bottle of wine, and we’re good to go..

Five Steps for Creating an Amazing Cheeseboard 3
Image: Elise Whittenburg/SheKnows

Here are my five easy steps to plan the perfect party cheese board:

1. Get a quality board to display all your tasty offerings. I simply used a cutting board, but if you want to be a little more snazzy, try something like this pretty wood board that includes three knives. Use the largest size board you have, or plan on serving some of the ingredients on the side like I did.

Now that you have something to build on...

2. Choose a variety of cheeses, from soft to hard, mild to strong. Set the cheeses out 30 minutes before serving to remove the chill and let the aromas come to life. Arrange them in an organized way from mildest to strongest. Add some charcuterie, like different varieties of salami, also arranged in an organized way. Label your cheeses so guests know what they are sampling.

Five Steps for Creating an Amazing Cheeseboard 4
Image: Elise Whittenburg/SheKnows

3. Choose at least two varieties of crackers — at least one plain and one a little more fancy. A plain water cracker is always a great choice, then add something with interest all its own. I chose a fig and nut cracker and presented both on my chunky marble tray. I like to keep crackers separate so they don't compete for space with the cheese as people start reaching in to start slicing and spreading.

4. Provide a variety of knives. You could use a slicer for hard cheeses, an open blade with holes for soft cheeses and a paring knife, which is a great all-purpose knife for anything on the tray. This mouse knife I used was too cute to resist!

Five Steps for Creating an Amazing Cheeseboard 6
Image: Elise Whittenburg/SheKnows

You can stop here if you want something quick and simple, and I'm sure no one will complain. However, to make it even more special, finish with step 5.

Five Steps for Creating an Amazing Cheeseboard 7
Image: Elise Whittenburg/SheKnows

5. Add something tart and something sweet. Olives and pickles are perfect for their complex and tart flavors. Nuts add a nice little crunch. Dried cranberries add sweetness, which elevates the flavors of the cheeses immensely. Present these on separate dishes to keep juices from mingling with the cheeses and meats. If you're lucky enough to find a chunk of honey in the comb, it's not only sweet but also a great conversation piece.

Five Steps for Creating an Amazing Cheeseboard 8
Image: Elise Whittenburg/SheKnows

Now that you have a beautiful cheese board, choose your wine. Wine and cheese are a perfect pair. Although I am not a huge wine drinker, I recently had a change of heart while on a food tour in Healdsburg, California. One of our stops was a specialty wine pairing bar, where I learned how important small bites like crackers with cheese, mustards or relishes were in the whole wine tasting experience. Now I regularly purchase special cheese and crackers to nibble with some small sips.

Since I’m admittedly a beginner in the wine department, I sought the advice of local winemakers Folie à Deux for today’s cheese board pairings. They picked out a Russian River Valley chardonnay and their Alexander Valley cabernet sauvignon for me. Both were delicious with all of these wonderful flavors, aromas and textures.

15 not-so-spooky campfire stories kids can hear before bedtime

$

Whether you're camping out in the wide-open wilderness or under a bunch of blankets in the middle of the living room, one of the best parts of the entire experience is gathering around the campfire (or a few flashlights and construction-paper flames) to tell a tall tale or two.

Usually, when you think of campfire stories, bloody hooks and calls that come from inside the house are the first things that come to mind. But if you've got littler kids — or if you yourself have a horror threshold that hovers somewhere between Goosebumps and The Blob — you might find yourself at a loss when the marshmallows-on-sticks come out. Well, we've got you covered with these 15 stories that leave the fright behind, and you're sure to find one that's perfect no matter what age your fellow campers happen to be.

More: 30 inspirational quotes about sportsmanship to share with your kids

For the littlest campers (under 6)

1. "Five Little S'mores"

This easy and quick rhyme is great for the preschoolers who might not have the attention span necessary to sit for a long story hour. Make sure you keep the marshmallows handy though — this one's sure to give them some ideas about dessert.

2. Curious George Goes Camping

George makes his usual monkey mischief while camping with the Man in the Yellow Hat and meets a special forest friend along the way.

3. "A-Camping We Will Go"

Upbeat and cheerful, this music and movement song will help kids get in the camping spirit and get their wiggles out at the same time.

4. "Over in the Meadow"

Kids will catch on quickly to the words of this soothing song. It's perfect before bedding down in your tent, camper or cabin and has the kind of outdoors and nature theme that makes it perfect for roughing it.

5. The Very Lonely Firefly

While this one isn't camping-specific, Eric Carle's illustrations and story will keep kids riveted, and afterwards you can all grab a few jelly jars and see if you can catch some fireflies of your own after dark.

More: Kids desperately need to play alone — here's how to make them do it

For big kids and tweens (7-11)

6. "On the Train"

This silly story about a man making fruit salad is best enjoyed by fans of cheesy dad jokes and will have your kids groaning in no time.

7. S Is for S'mores

Perfect for kids that are in-between "babyish" books but wouldn't be into anything spooky, S is for S'mores is a straightforward camping alphabet that could come in handy if you have a troop of scouts in tow.

8. "How Bear Lost His Tail"

This Ojibwe story of how the bear came to have a short, bobbed tail is a campfire classic and a great way to sneak a moral into the campfire stories; plus, the tale of trickster otter will give kids something to chuckle about.

9. "The Ant and the Grasshopper"

Speaking of morals, Aesop's fables are always worth a retelling, and we've all heard the one about the wise ants and foolish grasshopper so many times that it isn't necessary to memorize the entire thing perfectly. Not a bad way to encourage your kids to help gather kindling and supplies for the campsite, either.

10. "The Rope"

Another great one for the dad-joke connoisseurs out there, The Rope tells the tale of a sneaky poker-playing rope that uses a terrible pun to get out of trouble.

More6 best coding camps for computer-crazy kids

For the older set (12 and up)

11. "A Porker in the Family"

Dark but not overly morbid, this silly tale of an extraordinary pig that saves a family's life is one that the littler kids might not like but older campers will get a chuckle out of.

12. "Why Cats Always Land on Their Feet"

This one's equally twisted without being too messed up, but proceed with caution anyway. Spoiler: this isn't actually a scientific explanation as to why cats land on their feet.

13. "The Neverending Story"

This story is done just like that repeating-verse road trip anthem "This is the Song that Never Ends." It's good for pulling one over on your kids the first time, but once they catch on it might be time for the adults to break out whatever adult refreshments they might have packed for the trip.

14. "The Unlucky Man"

The tale of the man who just couldn't take a hint starts out seriously enough, but once you get to the end, the story gets sillier and sillier and your kids won't be too sad to see the dense protagonist meet his fate.

15. "Dogs in the Wild West"

This short and groan-worthy story ends with a pun that some adults won't fully catch the first time around. It's a great way to end the night, and either your kids will get it immediately and beg you to stop telling stories, or they'll obsess over it all night. Either way, you're off the hook.

Forget about making any headway over the next 2-1/2 months. Ruling planet Mars turning retrograde on April 17 shows that the life path that seemed so straightforward weeks ago will now become a long and winding road. Moreover, there's no guarantee that following it will amount to anything. The easy answer would be to blame fate for your troubles. And that might even be the case, but success isn't served on a silver platter. Like fortune, it depends on what you make of it. Make the most of what you have to work with and you will wind up making progress of a different kind.

Mercury trines to Jupiter and Pluto on April 14 and 17 respectively show you positioned to make quite a killing on a sale or deal. It's been a long time since you've lined up so many ducks in a row and you could profit enormously. However the opportunity to collect isn't now. Wait until the first week of May when the sun traveling over this same patch of sky shows you taking in a bigger haul. It will be hard to do because the carrots being dangled under your nose are crispy and delicious, but why settle for sticks when you can have bunches?

Grand trines are triangles in the sky that appear when you have at least one planet in each of the three zodiac signs that shares the same element. In your case it will be your ruling planet Mercury that will be triangulating with Jupiter and Pluto. These are the two "deep pockets" planets in astrology, which means that you could secure some major funding, patronage or heavy-hitting sponsorship this week. But believe it or not, there's more to come. The wind is at your back fortunes-wise, which means that you'll want to steer that ship with a firm hand over the next four weeks.

Thankfully things will turn out splendidly insofar as the successful sale, merger or once-in-a-lifetime signing is concerned. Take advantage of the spirit of adventure that this week's Mercury/Jupiter trine brings and pursue something that's off the beaten track. You might want to sign up for salsa lessons, a cooking class or learning another language. Anything that mixes up the routine and gets you two out and about would be a good thing.

LIBRA (Sept. 22 - Oct. 21)

You have this way of hanging back to see what people are going to do next. Some say this is cautious while others say it's cagey. In truth it's smart. Letting people take the lead allows you to decide if you want to follow or not. It also gives you some much-needed maneuvering room. However, the time has come for you to put your cards on the table, to speak your mind and to make your intentions clear on April 13. This includes saying goodbye to that person you weren't all the serious about and hello to the one that you clearly underestimated.

SCORPIO (Oct. 22 - Nov. 20)

A lucky break for your partner this week means putting future plans on hold. It's quite an about-face. You were expected to pull stakes and maybe even leave your job when he was going through a rough patch but now that things are looking up for him career-wise, he suddenly wants to stay put. It's hypocritical, but what's important is that he feels back on solid ground again. Give him time to get used to life in the winner's circle. You'll know when it's time to revisit some of those choices, and when you do, you'll find it's not as bad as all that.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 21 -Dec. 20)

Mars turns retrograde in your zodiac sign on April 17. Be ready to experience a drop in confidence — particularly where your relationship is concerned. For weeks Mars has pushed you to assert yourself in ways you haven't before and now its backwards motion could lead you to doubt all of that. You might feel like you've gone too far and that you should backtrack and make "nice." This would not be a good idea. If anything you need to keep on pushing forward or you will risk losing all the ground you've gained. Mars will be retrograde from April 17 to June 29.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 19)

You can see that things will work out in the end, but it will take a while. Thank heavens you were born under Saturn, a planet accustomed to taking the long view of matters. Whatever your present set of challenging circumstances (and they are considerable), you have the faith, stamina and perseverance to go the distance. And thankfully your partner or loved one does too. It's funny that for someone who often dwells on the negative, you have a unique ability to see the positive in the slimmest of margins and to focus on that. Goes to show you're a closet romantic after all.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 17)

It's funny how people's idea of what's romantic rarely meshes with yours. You've been a good sport as loved ones, relatives and friends tried to fix you up will a variety of potential partners. And it's certainly been enlightening about the way they see you. However, you've had your fill and of course it's when you hit the wall that you actually meet someone who could rock your world on April 12. But hold that thought because he won't be available until Mars re-enters Sagittarius in August. It's just as well. It gives you plenty of time to marinate in the juices of anticipation.

PISCES (Feb. 18 - March 18)

Water signs have a hard time with love. It's ironic considering that water is the element that rules over our emotional lives in astrology. Cancers love too much, Scorpios obsess about the one that got away, and Pisces long for people they can't have. Thankfully Mercury in grounded Taurus forming a sextile to Neptune in Pisces on April 12 will make you see that the person in your life now is the person you're meant to be with. And that's not saddled with, but meant to be with. It's time to trade in a history of heartbreak for a future full of happiness and fulfillment.
