Emma Stone and this year's Academy Award show host, Seth MacFarlane, will announce the Oscar nominations on Thursday, Jan. 10.

EmmaStoneOscarNominations

It was announced on Monday that Emma Stone will present the Oscar nominations on Thursday, Jan. 10, with this year's Academy Award host Seth MacFarlane. In fact, this is the first time since 1972 that a show host has participated in the nominations announcement.

During the past 40 years, it has been tradition for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president to announce the nominees with a Hollywood actor. Last year, it was Jennifer Lawrence with then-Academy president Tom Sherak.

The Academy has been trying to take some of its traditions and give them a fresh perspective to keep up with technology and bring in younger audiences. By naming MacFarlane as the host of the 85th Academy Awards, the motion picture group hopes to generate buzz around a nontraditional host.

The Family Guy creator may seem like an odd fit, but he brings legions of fans to the table and he had a successful year in film with the movie Ted. The irreverent flick starred Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis as a couple whose relationship is tested when Wahlberg's character must choose between his girlfriend or his crude and inappropriate teddy bear.

By having Stone join him at Thursday's Oscar event, the buzz for the nominations should be big. She has one of the hottest careers in young Hollywood with movies such as The Help, The Amazing Spider-Man, and the upcoming Gangster Squad with Ryan Gosling.

Some of the films duking it out in this year's race include Les Misérables, Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty, and Silver Linings Playbook, but the Academy has the opportunity to nominate up to 10 films in the Best Picture category. With such a strong slate of films for 2012, it is anticipated that the voting members will take advantage of this rule.

The nominations will be broadcast live on Thursday, Jan. 10, on ABC's Good Morning America at 8:30 a.m. EST/5:30 a.m. PST.

Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Beliebers

Justin Bieber's weekend marks a new high for narcissism and a new low for everything else.

Justin Bieber at concert

Why is Justin Bieber so bad for your family? Well, aside from the fact that the more your children love him... the more you're stuck listening to him. Bieber is also just a really bad example of a teenager.

I could focus on the less-than-stand-up citizens he calls "friends" or his incessant concert crotch grabbing . Instead, however, I'll just focus on two major developments from the weekend.

First, Bieber smokes. Now, TMZ and a lot of other people are going crazy and claiming he smokes weed. While it's not out of the question, I don't like reporting on something I can't confirm beyond someone else's "unnamed sources."

What we do know is that there are pictures that are undeniably of Bieber with some sort of cigarette/blunt between his fingers.

Even if it's a cigarette, I think we can agree that it's something we'd prefer not be portrayed as "cool" to our children. Legally, Bieber is old enough to smoke... but that doesn't mean he should.

Second, he's a little full of himself. Apparently, the Biebs is so desperate to party, he'll do so with complete strangers. Just one catch: Once you party together, he owns you. Or at least any pictures you take while in his presence. According to partiers, Biebs' bodyguards have taken to posting signs near the pop star that let friends/party-goers know that if they show up and take a picture, he owns that picture. They do that in an effort to keep kids from posting pictures of Biebs and to protect his privacy .

Prince Harry loading into an Apache

It's understandable. Especially when you consider the latest scandal involving Prince Harry, Las Vegas, his hotel room, and a lack of clothes. Except Bieber is not the prince. Even Harry's lackeys aren't going to such lengths.

Instead, they're letting the boy-man make mistakes to learn how one acts in public/your hotel room with strangers. Word to the wise: Don't get naked... or light up.

So, there you have it. Don't let your kids grow up to be Bieber fans. He's a bad example — not just because of the things he does, but because of his inability to keep himself from doing those frowned-upon things while in the public eye. It's called self-restraint and he has none. Also, he'll try to steal the rights to their pictures.

SheKnows hits the red carpet at the Palm Springs Film Festival Awards Gala to chat with this year’s hottest stars about awards season and their goals for 2013.

Diane Lane and Richard Gere, Palm Springs Film Festival

It’s considered the kick-off to awards season: The Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala. Saturday night stars like Ben Affleck, Helen Hunt, Richard Gere and Bradley Cooper were honored for their work in the best films of the past year.

SheKnows headed to the desert as well to chat with Hollywood’s hottest about their roles and what they hope to accomplish next. Check it out:

PSFF Awards Gala Red Carpet

Diane Lane, wearing a lacy purple cocktail dress and sans hubby Josh Brolin, was in attendance to present the Chairman’s Award to her friend and Unfaithful co-star, Richard Gere.

When SK asked her what her best memory with the swoon-worthy actor was, Lane revealed, “ a lot of kissing.” Hopefully, Brolin isn’t a jealous husband!

Actress Sally FieldSally Field was also looking lovely in a lacy black number, braving the cold to talk to us. The Lincoln actress and Career Achievement Award winner informed us that she has a lot of interests outside of acting that she hopes to pursue this year.

“I’d like to be five pounds thinner,” she told SheKnows. “I’d really like to conquer a few piano pieces and learn to play the piano, and I’m thinking I really want to learn to speak French, finally. I’ve always wanted to.”

Inside the gala, Field received a standing ovation from the crowd for her work over the years and her most recent portrayal of first lady Mary Todd Lincoln, which is rumored to earn her an Oscar nomination this year.

While Field’s plate seems completely full right now, her Spider-Man co-star and the presenter of her award, Martin Sheen, had a simpler goal in mind for the coming year.

“Just to stay alive one more year,” he laughed. “I’ll give thanks and praise.”

Bradley Cooper was clearly the most in demand man of the night. The actor, who was being honored with the Desert Palm Achievement Award for his role in Silver Linings Playbook, was the last to arrive at the gala and was greeted by screaming fans, who had spent hours waiting outside the Palm Springs Convention Center to get a glimpse of him. Cooper was celebrating his 38th birthday that evening and was serenaded with “Happy Birthday” inside the gala, led by host Mary Hart.

Bradley Cooper and David O. Russell, Palm Springs Film Festival

Cooper’s Silver Linings director, David O. Russell, told SheKnows that he knew from the start that Cooper was perfect for the role.

“I knew he was a very soulful guy who had been through a lot of trials himself and had not shown that as an actor yet,” Russell said.

You can catch all of these hot stars again this Sunday as SheKnows hits the carpet again at the 70th Annual Golden Globes.

Morning-after pill: Should teens carry one?

The debate over the morning-after pill has heated up again. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently recommended that all teen girls be given a prescription for the morning-after pill at their regular physicals. Should teens be counseled about emergency contraception in advance of needing it? Does presenting these pills as an option make teens less likely to use birth control?
Teen taking morning-after pill

The debate over the morning-after pill has heated up again. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently recommended that all teen girls be given a prescription for the morning-after pill at their regular physicals.

Physicians recommend advance prescription

Should teens be counseled about emergency contraception in advance of needing it? Does presenting these pills as an option make teens less likely to use birth control?

The morning-after pill is a form of emergency contraception used to prevent unintended pregnancy when a woman has had unprotected sex or experienced a birth control failure. Pregnancy prevention after unprotected sex is possible because conception doesn’t usually happen immediately. According to the Mayo Clinic, morning-after pills do not terminate a pregnancy that has implanted in the uterine wall, but they act to prevent a pregnancy from occurring. This is done by preventing or delaying ovulation, preventing the fertilization of the egg or preventing the implantation of a fertilized egg.

Teens and the morning-after pill

There has been ongoing debate as to whether or not these pills — also referred to as Plan B — should be available to teenagers without a doctor’s prescription. Currently 17-year-olds can get emergency contraception by showing identification at any pharmacy, but teens under 17 need a prescription.

Read why clueless teens are getting pregnant>>

Pediatricians take a stand

The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that all teen girls be given an advance prescription for the pills, and doctors can start talking to patients as young as 10 years old about emergency contraception.

Cora Collette Breuner, M.D., M.P.H. is a professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine and Seattle Children’s Hospital. She is also a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Adolescence. We asked her if all teens should be given an advance prescription for the morning-after pill, or only those who are known to be sexually active.

“The advance provision of emergency contraception should ideally be provided to teens before they become sexually active but this is not always possible,” says Dr. Breuner. “We know that unprotected sexual activity may occur in teens at any time — and not necessarily near a time when they will be seeing their health care provider.” Dr. Breuner feels that the pill should most certainly be provided to teens that are already sexually active. According to the AAP Policy Statement on emergency contraception, adolescents are more likely to use emergency contraception if it has been prescribed in advance of need.

Are teens playing it safe, or still taking risks?>>

Crossing a line?

For parents of teen girls, these recommendations may feel a bit invasive — crossing the line between providing medical care and parenting. Yet as children head into their tween years, their relationship with the pediatrician or family physician changes to reflect their different needs. “All teens should have a conversation with their health care provider about sexuality — as well as other issues including texting while driving, seatbelts, alcohol and depression,” says Dr. Breuner. Opening these lines of communication early can help your teen take better care of herself as a young adult.

Won’t they have more sex?

Some argue that with increased availability of the morning-after pill, teens will have more unprotected sex — and become sexually active at an earlier age. Dr. Breuner disagrees. “We have no data to suggest that,” she shares, and those who advocate for the prescriptions agree. Sarah Brown, of the nonprofit National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, says, “Good information, in fact, has a protective effect. What we’ve learned from good research is that talking about these issues helps young people have a plan, understand it and know what they would do.”

Arming your teenager with as much knowledge as possible is the best way to raise a healthy, competent adult. Take the time to speak with your teens about sexual activity often, and keep those lines of communication open.

Does Newt Gingrich have a crush on Snooki?

Since transforming herself from a hard-clubbing "Guidette" into a happy mommy, Snooki Polizzi has found friends in new places — including one in the Republican Party.

Snooki and JWoww

Does conservative politico Newt Gingrich have a thing for Snooki? Or is he just trying to turn her into a Republican?

The former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives sent Snooki Polizzi a baby gift, which viewers get a look at on the Season 2 premiere of Snooki & JWoww, airing Tuesday at 10/9c on MTV.

Snooki hugs and cuddles a plushy stuffed elephant in the first episode, The New York Daily News reports, telling fiancé Jionni LaValle, "Look, Newt gave this to me — that political guy."

Newt who? Looks like LaValle doesn't really follow politics. Granted, LaValle is only 24 and was a grade-schooler during Gingrich's heyday as House speaker from 1995 to 1999, but still.

When her man professed puzzlement as to who Gingrich was, Snooki tried to explain. "He, like, tried to run for president or something. He's really cute, though."

Gingrich and Polizzi met back in the summer, when both were booked on The Tonight Show on the same night.

New mom Snooki offers Kate Middleton parenting advice>>

"I saw some of your interviews when you did your first book," Gingrich told Snooki pleasantly. "Congratulations on having two New York Times best-sellers."

"I am trying to be like you," Snooki responded, while the audience cracked up.

Hmm, if that's so, maybe Gingrich was just trying to recruit Snooki into the Republican Party. He did send her an elephant, the symbol of the "red state" party. A coincidence? I think not!

The premiere also shows Snooki's country club baby shower, where Snooki was notably uncomfortable in the upscale environment. Snooki disliked the valet parking, calling it something only rich people do, and said that the "classy joint" needed more animal print.

The baby gifts were all Snooki, though — JWoww bought her alcohol test strips for breast milk while Deena Cortese brought a onesie that read "Party, my room. 2 a.m. Bring your own bottle."

Spaghetti Squash with Tomato-mushroom Sauce

If you've never had spaghetti squash, you might be surprised by this recipe. After it's cooked and scraped out of its shell, spaghetti squash looks almost identical to traditional spaghetti, hence the name. What a fun — and delicious — surprise!

This is an easy, meatless meal that is filling and nutritious. Spaghetti squash is a fall/winter vegetable, so try it while it's in season!

Spaghetti squash with tomato-mushroom sauce recipeSpaghetti Squash with Tomato-mushroom Sauce

Serves 6

Ingredients:

  • 1 large spaghetti squash, cut in half vertically
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1-2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups prepared tomato sauce
  • 1/3 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese for garnish

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 450 degrees F.
  2. Place the squash in the microwave and cook for about 3-4 minutes to soften it. Remove from the microwave and cut in half, vertically. You'll want to use a very sharp, large kitchen knife, as the squash will be a bit hard to cut.
  3. Scoop out the seeds and discard .
  4. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
  5. Drizzle the olive oil on the cut side of the squash, and season with the salt and pepper. Place the squash, cut side down, on the baking sheet and cook for 40-50 minutes.
  6. Remove and allow it to cool to the touch, about 5-10 minutes.
  7. Meanwhile, add the mushroom slices to the tomato sauce and simmer until warmed through.
  8. When the squash is cool to the touch, stand each half up vertically, and use a fork to scrape the insides in a downward motion. The flesh will fall out like strands of spaghetti.
  9. Serve on individual plates, topped with the pasta sauce and garnished with the grated Parmesan cheese.

Gloria Pall, the too sexy for TV actress, dies at 85

Gloria Pall, the 1950s actress who was called "too sexy" for television, has passed away at age 85.

Gloria Pall

The life and times of Gloria Pall were pretty interesting, especially when you consider the storm of controversy the TV vixen kicked up while still fully clothed.

Pall was never naked or even nearly naked on television, not like you often find actresses now, five decades later. Instead, as she called herself on her website, she was "just suggestive — corny not porny."

Yet, just weeks after her show first aired on television, it was canceled amid a public outcry. What, exactly was her show? She hosted a romance-themed movie program once a week on Wednesday nights.

From the beginning to the end of each movie show, Pall would occasionally pop up and do introductions and have pointless discussions with the camera. All this happened while wearing strapless, lower-cut dresses that were pretty scandalous at the time.

She could do the pretty girl sexy walk like a model, and she wasn't afraid to strip into new clothes behind a black-lit dressing screen, exposing viewers to her — gasp! — shadow. It all seems so trivial and innocent now. But in 1954, standing around in men's pajama's on national television was downright appalling.

The next year, all the scandal landed her invitations to pose for Playboy and Life magazines. Never one to back down, Pall took them up on their offers.

For further proof of Pall's go-get-'em attitude, one need look no further than the rest of her career. Pall started her working life as an airplane mechanic when she was just a teenager in New York City. From there, she became a secretary at the company.

She eventually moved out West and first landed jobs as a showgirl in Vegas and Reno, Nevada. When she hit Hollywood, she was soon landing small roles alongside guys like Elvis and Kirk Douglas. She even once played a stripper .

When work in Hollywood was slow, Pall took up real estate. Back in the '40s and '50s, falling back on "reality television" just wasn't an option.

Pall, who was nearly always a vision in lavender , continued to go after making a life for herself, seizing life one adventure at a time. At 85 years old, in a hospital in Burbank, California, on Dec. 30, 2012, her loved ones were no doubt sad to see her go, but it was a life well-lived.

Nurturing an edgy teen

Love unconditionally
Mom with edgy teen

If you have a child who doesn’t fit in, don’t focus on the negative aspects of being different. Embrace your child’s unique qualities and mold-breaking behaviors. Learn how to support a teen who doesn’t color inside the lines.

Support your child’s unique choices

It’s harder than ever to classify teens into types, and this is a good thing. Instead of labeling your kid, learn how to embrace the behaviors, hobbies and choices that make him unique. Edgy doesn’t mean bad and being different isn’t a warning sign. Nurture your edgy teen as you learn about his sense of individuality.

Never tease your teen for being different

Does your teen prefer fashions that don’t fit in with what other kids are wearing? Does he spend more time playing role-playing games than he does playing sports? If your teen seems different from other kids or he has interests wildly different from your own, never tease him. Even kids who have a solid group of friends can be teased and ostracized for being different. As a parent, the last thing you want to do is contribute to your child’s insecurities. Be a source of support and understanding. Act as your child’s advocate when other family members question his interests or behaviors. Be there for him instead of making him feel like being different is bad.

Make an effort to understand your teen’s interests

Teen at anime festival

Is your teen into anime, Tumblr blogs or larping? Do those words sound like Greek to you? Make an effort to learn about what your teen loves. Whether she sews her own costumes or listens to indie bands you’ve never heard of, you should show interest in her interests. You don’t need to become an aficionado yourself, but you should communicate clearly that you admire your teen’s dedication to her hobbies and that you’d love to learn more about them. Don’t be condescending. If and when your teen opens up, give her your full attention. Ask questions. Admit when you’re confused or befuddled. Give your teen a chance to share what she loves. You may be surprised by the depth of her enthusiasm, and that’s OK.

Develop balance between being a mom and a friend>>

Readjust your expectations

Always pictured yourself with a teen on the varsity team? Consider why you might feel uncomfortable with or disappointed in your teen’s choices. If you’re trying to slot your teen into your own expectations or your experiences as a teenager, adjust your expectations. Your teen is an individual who shouldn’t be expected to conform to anyone’s expectations. As long as you know your teen is healthy and safe, you should offer nothing but nurturing and acceptance. You may end up learning something from your teen as he embarks on a different lifestyle than the one you knew at his age.

Be supportive when it comes to bullying

Every kid experiences bullying at one time or another. Kids who have mainstream hobbies and behaviors may be less susceptible to bullying than kids who deliberately avoid the mainstream. If your teen is an outsider, by choice or not, support him when other kids treat him poorly. Help him make friends with similar interests and never ignore or blow off his sadness. Be aware of warning signs of depression and anxiety, such as declining performance in school and insomnia. However, don’t assume that being different or having unique tastes is a sign that there’s something wrong with your teen.

How to shop for healthy foods at the grocery store

$

Shopping for healthy foods seems simple enough — buy whatever says “low fat,” “zero trans fat” or “all natural,” right? Wrong.
Woman shopping for produce

Shopping for healthy foods seems simple enough — buy whatever says "low fat,""zero trans fat" or "all natural," right? Wrong.

Be a smart shopper

With the start of the new year, it's time to start changing the way we eat — which begins at the grocery store. Many brands use fancy packaging and deceiving words to get you to think their product is actually healthy, when in reality you may as well be buying a carton of ice cream. Educate yourself on food labels, nutrition facts and what brands do to be able to use the words "can help reduce cholesterol," plus learn what aisles to avoid and which ones to spend most of your time in.

Tip: Never shop hungry. Always shop the perimeter first and the inner aisles at the end.

Supermarket logistics

The healthiest foods in the grocery store are always located on the outer edges. Hit the produce section first — stocking up on the freshest, most natural ingredients in the store. Next, head over to the meat department where you can load up on fish and other high-protein meats, such as chicken and beef. Finally, make your way around to the dairy and eggs. For eggs, organic and cage-free are the healthiest, and the color of the shell makes no difference. For dairy, stock up on Greek yogurt , natural low-fat cheese and 1 percent or nonfat milk .

Be aware of food labels

Food labels can be deceiving and can mislead the consumer into thinking their product is healthy. Everything must be approved by the FDA, but that doesn't mean there aren't ways around it. Making generic statements or zoning in on one healthy ingredient that the food may contain are just a few examples. Most bread says "whole wheat" or "multigrain," but unless it says "100 percent whole grain," you may only be getting a small amount of nutrition mixed in with a bunch of fillers.

Check out these 5 misleading claims on food labels>>

Read the nutrition facts

Some key things to look at are the serving size, grams of fat and sugar per serving, vitamins and minerals, and the ingredients.

  • Tip: Stay away from junk foods and foods targeted for children. Always shop with and stick to a list to avoid the temptations of candy bars, potato chips and other high-fat, high-calorie items.
Serving size— Look at the serving size and how many servings the product has. It's very easy to overlook this. Did you know that a serving of ice cream is only half a cup? Most of us fill our bowls to the tip top, which is probably about two cups worth. Manufacturers are able to manipulate the serving size to make their product appear healthier for you.
  • Grams of fat and sugar per serving— Always check these two items before buying. A product may be low in fat or even be fat free, but that doesn't mean it doesn't contain sugar. Sugar converts to fat if it's not burned off — remember that!
  • Vitamins and minerals— These are necessary to feeling good and looking your best each day. Look at the percent daily value to see how much you're getting from that food. The goal is to get to 100 percent every day. Keep in mind that percentages are based on a 2,000-calorie per day diet, so adjust as needed.
  • Ingredients— Anything that can't be pronounced is never a good thing, nor is anything that is artificial, such as high-fructose corn syrup. As a general rule, don't buy anything with more than five ingredients as the food is too processed and no longer good for you.

Shirley MaClaine talks Downton in The Saturday Evening Post

This is just a reminder: Shirley MacLaine is bloody brilliant! If you don't believe us, catch the Downton Abbey season three premiere.

Shirley MacLaine

Shirley MacLaine is on the cover of the Jan/Feb issue of The Saturday Evening Post, but it's what's on the inside that's so good. The entire interview is sheer brilliance — MacLaine is one of the wittiest women out there. But we especially love what she had to say about her new gig on Downton Abbey.

MacLaine plays the American mother of Lady Cora who comes for a visit and then never seems to leave. She's a little crass, always mocking British culture and quite funny. MacLaine adds just another touch of subtle humor to the classism and snobbery that practically define Downton Abbey. The actress says she wasn't an early fan of the show, but she's quickly become obsessed.

“Actually I hadn’t even watched it until my hairdresser told me how much she loved it," she told ThePost. "So I tuned in. Shortly afterward, they signed me to play Martha Levinson so I sat down and viewed them all… and I just became addicted.”

She went on to talk about the necessary evil of the classism that took place during the time Downton Abbey is said to take place.

“Those authentic costumes took some work. The corsets were really demanding and the buttons on everything were so small," she explained. "I understood the class system after getting ready every morning to go on set. I realized women of that time couldn’t get it together without a couple of servants.”

Shirley MacLaine and Robert Duvall

Please. Some women still can't get it together. Shirley MacLaine, though, has rarely seemed like one of those women. She's one classy comedienne, which is probably why she gets along so "famously" with the lovely Dame Maggie Smith, who also plays on Downton Abbey. MacLaine shared Smith's memory of the first time the two women met.

“She told me that we had met 40 years ago backstage at the Oscars next to the catering table," she recalled to The Post. "I was up for something, and there was this big chocolate cake sitting there. And somebody else won. Maggie said, ‘You know what you did, dear? You tucked right into that chocolate cake and said, “#*&% it. I don’t care if I’m ever thin again.’ I didn’t remember it. Maggie has a better memory. She’s one year younger than I am.”

Brooke Burke's scar has made its television debut. After frequently turning to scarves to hide her throat post-surgery, the mom of four braved it and bared it on Good Morning America!

Brooke Burke

Brooke Burke's scar debut on Good Morning America came just over a month after the 41-year-old underwent surgery for thyroid cancer.

"No makeup,"Brooke Burke shared proudly. "This is a first for me today, I've been scarfing it up. But you know what, it's fresh, it's a month old and I think scars tell a story and I am so fortunate."

Recalling how her four children reacted to the news their mother was ill, Burke hinted that the emotional scars her family with David Charvet have incurred may take longer to heal than her neck.

Brooke Burke's happy news: She's cancer-free!>>

"All the children really handled it differently," the Dancing with the Stars co-host shared. "My husband and I chose not to share it with the children too soon because I was waiting several months before I scheduled my surgery."

Speaking of Shaya, her youngest, she recalled, "My son actually said, 'Is Papa going to get it?' In his mind, at 4-years-old, he doesn't know what 'cancer' means."

"My 6-year-old just thought, 'Mommy, I'm going to go with you, I'm going to hold your hand, I'm going to go to every appointment," Brooke Burke, seen above with her family in September, added of daughter Rain.

Speaking of Neriah, she went on, "My oldest daughter — it was really difficult for her, when it was in the news and her friends had to come and say, 'Oh, we heard about your mom and we're so sorry.' She cried, she wanted to know if I was okay, she made me promise her that nothing was going to happen."

What Brooke Burke really wants to do in hotel beds>>

Thankfully, that turned out to be a fairly easy promise to keep!

"I'm one of the lucky ones," Brooke Burke went on, giving thanks for being "responsible enough to do a regular physical and then take action."

"The message really is about preventative health because I have no symptoms and generally, thyroid cancer has very subtle symptoms," she added.

There's one major surprise in this week's episode of Vegas. Ralph Lamb got kidnapped! I don't even know how that could happen. He's like the John Wayne Superman of the desert. He brings convicts to their knees with his death stare and is always ten steps ahead of the meager criminals who surround him. He's not supposed to get kidnapped!

Buried Alive

Ralph finds himself six-feet under ground with piles of dirt being shoved on top of him — and no idea who's to blame. Fifty-eight hours earlier there was just chaos in Vegas. There was a group of murderous brothers seeking revenge for their father's financial demise and death. They were taking hostages all over town and when the Lamb men went to straighten things out, Ralph actually killed one of the brothers.

It would make sense that the surviving brother was the kidnapper, but as Ralph tears open the ropes that confine him and manages to climb to the top of the grave he discovers the truth: The kidnapper is a card shark from Providence who's been scamming the Savoy. Ralph's in the middle of fighting the kidnapper when Jack arrives and shoots the guy. Even superheroes need sidekicks.

Unlikely Partners

Mob Boss wife, Laura Savino , has officially joined forces with ADA Katherine O'Connell as a confidential informant. She's trying to gather all the evidence she can to prove hot-head Johnny Rizzo murdered his finacée. This, of course, is self-serving because with Rizzo out of the way Laura's husband can regain his position at the top of the food chain in Vegas.

Laura was able to get Vincent to say that Rizzo was probably guilty and that was enough for Katherine to get permission to tap the phones at the Savoy. She may be well-intentioned and it all may work out for him in the end, but I can't imagine Vincent being too happy when he discovers the truth.

Things You Should Know

Jack and Mia have finally sealed the deal! The exceptionally beautiful couple showed up a little late to work after walking up in Mia's lavish bed. This will definitely spark some trouble in the Rizzo and Lamb households!

Also, Vincent Savino and Johnny Rizzo were held hostage by a band of desert vigilantes who are trying to clean up Vegas . To get out of the fix, Rizzo actually signs away the Tumbleweed to them. And there goes Vincent's dream of being the biggest casino owner in the desert. Until he plots another scheme, that is.

Ryan Gosling is on every lady's list

Ryan Gosling is given the cover treatment from People as one of the hunkiest and most lovable actors in Hollywood. Let's face it, the ladies love him.

RyanGoslingPeopleCover

If you're obsessed with Ryan Gosling like most women these days, then you know that the Hollywood hunk's success is global and it spans all ages.

In a new People cover story, the magazine focuses on "America's Most Wanted Man." Ruben Fleischer, director of Gosling's new film, Gangster Squad, explains, "When you're with him you feel different. He has a magnetic quality — larger than life."

If guys are explaining his magnetism, what do women think? Well, one insider to the magazine says, "Women love him because he's just kooky. He's definitely in touch with his childlike side."

That means plenty of dates to Disneyland if you're his girlfriend, Eva Mendes. The couple has been dating since September 2011 and they seem to have a pretty easy relationship. As one source said, "[They] get along so well because she's not needy or smothering. They just work."

It also helps that Gosling "is an incredibly sweet boyfriend," says the source. The magazine just rubs it in to women everywhere that not only is the Drive actor handsome, he's kind, he's talented and yes, he's taken.

He doesn't only dote on his girlfriend, he also takes his mom, Donna, as his date to red carpet premieres. In fact, it was Mendes who helped his mom get ready for a recent Hollywood event by allowing Donna to raid her designer closet.

The 32-year-old actor got his big break alongside Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera in the Disney Channel revival of The Mickey Mouse Club back in 1993. However, it was The Notebook in 2004 that earned the actor his swoon-worthy status.

His on- and offscreen then-relationship with co-star Rachel McAdams made their romance even sweeter. Audiences ate up their performances and Gosling cemented his dreamboat status.

But he wasn't one to rest on his laurels, and the actor went straight to work putting in strong performances in movies like Half Nelson, Drive, and Crazy, Stupid, Love. In fact, it was his role as a drug-addicted teacher in Half Nelson that got him his first Academy Award nomination in 2006.

Audiences will get a chance to see Gosling on the big screen again this coming weekend in Gangster Squad. The crime film also stars Emma Stone, Sean Penn and Josh Brolin and opens on Jan. 11.

Bethenny Frankel talks divorce with Ellen DeGeneres

"Skinnygirl" mogul Bethenny Frankel appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to talk about the elephant in the room. Yep, the divorce.

BehennyFrankeltalksdivorce

All eyes have been on Bethenny Frankel since she announced her separation from her husband, Jason Hoppy, on Dec. 23 and then filed for divorce on Jan. 5. Now, she's opening up to her broadcast mentor, Ellen DeGeneres.

On Wednesday's The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the Skinnygirl mogul appeared with the talk show host to discuss the recent demise of her marriage.

She told DeGeneres, "I feel like a failure. I really put it out there — I wanted the fairytale, I thought I had it. And [my daughter] Bryn is my fairytale... but I don't know how people go through [divorce] because this is excruciating."

Frankel has been very open about the problems in her marriage and it doesn't seem like she is stopping now, especially with her new talk show set to debut in the fall. The 42-year-old also seems to understand that many of her fans have taken clear sides.

The reality star said, "I get letters. So many people have been so supportive and some people are judgmental. And I really understand."

Even with her underlying strength, the former Bethenny Ever After star knows that the challenges that lie ahead aren't easy. "I'm scared of the unknown future. You know everything, and one day you don't know. So I'm scared. I'm older."

The Bravo TV personality continued, "I never thought I'd be a role model but I think to some people I am or have been. So this is an important time because it's about what I do next. How I handle myself now with grace, with dignity. This is the time now that matters."

Hopefully, the divorce won't be fought out publicly, but there are reports that Hoppy was blindsided by Frankel's request for sole custody, child support and health insurance in the divorce filing.

Either way, she seems to have a strong ally with DeGeneres in her corner and she has a relatable story to share with her viewers when her talk show debuts next September.

Rosie O'Donnell and her wife are the proud parents of a new baby girl who was born on Jan. 5.

RosieO'DonnellBabyGirlRosie O'Donnell is a mom five times over as of Jan. 5. The comedian and her wife, Michelle Rounds, adopted a baby girl. The new bundle of joy was a petite, but "happy and healthy" 5 pounds, 5 ounces at birth according to O'Donnell's rep who spoke to Access Hollywood.

The newborn was named Dakota and she's already made her first public appearance on Wednesday when O'Donnell shared a photo of the family on Instagram. She said, “we r thrilled to announce the arrival of r daughter Dakota -#withloveandthanks — AMEN.”

While this is the first child for Rounds, it is the former talk show host's fifth child. She had four children with former partner Kelli Carpenter. Parker, Chelsea and Blake were adopted and Vivienne Rose was delivered by Carpenter in 2002. Her children now range in age from a newborn to 17 years of age. That is one busy household!

The former OWN star and her wife were secretly married in June 2012 after a health scare for Rounds when she was diagnosed with desmoid tumors that needed to be surgically removed. O'Donnell then had her own health issues in August when she suffered a heart attack.

At the time, the comedian definitely had babies on the brain. She told People, “I will gladly stay home. I want to try to work hard at getting myself healthy, on Mich and I getting started and maybe finding a baby.”

Now that everyone is healthy and on the mend, they can focus on caring for their beautiful new baby. Congrats to Rosie and Michelle!

Quinoa burger recipe

Adapted from: How Sweet It Is

Yields 12 sliders

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup uncooked quinoa
  • 2 cups vegetable stock
  • 1/2 cup grated chipotle cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup carrots, grated or finely chopped
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup canned black beans, chopped
  • 1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon chipotle chili powder
  • 12 slider buns
  • 2 avocados, sliced
  • 1/2 cup sriracha mayonnaise

Directions:

  1. Rince quinoa and add to pot with vegetable stock. Bring to a boil, cover and let simmer for about 15 minutes. It will be done when it's fluffy when tested with a fork. Let quinoa cool and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl add in cheese, carrots, green onions, garlic and black beans. Give it a toss and then add in panko and combine. Once the quinoa is cooled, add it to the bowl and give it a quick toss. Add beaten eggs, salt, pepper and chipotle chili powder. Mix together until well combined.
  3. Depending on your slider bun size, press together patties to fit your bun. You really have to squeeze all that goodness together in order for it to form tightly. Once all patties have been formed started heating your oil.
  4. In a large skillet heat about 1-1/2 tablespoons olive oil. Let it get hot and then add in about 6 patties and cook till crispy on one side and then flip. Add to a plate and continue cooking the rest of your patties, adding more oil to pan if needed.
  5. Add quinoa burgers to your buns and top with sliced avocado and sriracha mayonnaise.

Mark Millar is pumped for Fantastic Four reboot

The Fantastic Four are getting a makeover. It's been six years since Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Ioan Gruffudd and Michael Chiklis played the heroes on the big screen. Now, Fox is rebooting and recasting the Marvel franchise.

Jessica Alba

The Avengers and the Justice League aren't the only superhero teams around. The comic book genre is filled with properties waiting to be plucked. Marvel's Fantastic Four, which hit theaters in 2005 and 2007, is gearing up for a reboot.

According to Mark Millar, who oversees everything Marvel at 20th Century Fox, the new series will be better than ever. He spoke to SciFiNow about director Josh Trank's vision for the team.

"From what I’ve seen and from talking to him — he and I have had dinner a couple of times and we talk quite regularly as well — he’s contemporising it,” said Millar. “I think he’s just making it work for the screen – he’s a great storyteller."

Move over Avengers! A Justice League movie is coming>>

Trank made a splash last year with his indie film Chronicle, which had similar subject matter. “Chronicle, if you think about it, was similar to Fantastic Four in that it was a bunch of people who were transformed into something more than human —  that turned out almost his calling card to come and do something like Fantastic Four."

The previous Fantastic Four films have been action-comedies that bordered on camp. Millar says Trank's script is tonally different. "There’s some moments in this — not to be specific — that are actually gonna be phenomenal on screen and stuff you haven’t seen in a superhero movie before.”

Considering the glut of superhero movies, we hope he's right. Between Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Batman, Green Lantern, Spider-Man, the X-Men and Superman, there's no room for error.

Shawty Lo on All My Babies Mamas: drugs led to 11 kids

Shawty Lo defends All My Babies' Mamas. He says selling drugs and money-hungry women resulted in 10 kids by 11 different women — and it isn't his fault.

Shawty Lo on stage in Atlanta. All My Babies' Mamas star Shawty Lo defends his 11 kids by 10 different women and his new Oxygen reality television show. In case you haven't heard, All My Babies' Mamas is an actual reality show that focuses on the inherent drama of being Shawty Lo: living in a house with 10 women who are all Lo's "baby mama"— a term used to describe the relationship of between a man and a woman who have a child together but are no longer romantically involved. Lo has 11 children by 10 baby mamas, in addition to a 19-year-old girlfriend whom all the baby mamas seem to dislike, at least according to the show's preview.

Shawty Lo defends All My Babies' Mamas and spoke exclusively to MTV News about his upcoming reality show. "You can hate all you want to, I didn't ask for it. It just happened. Now that it happened, I'm supposed to turn my back against it?" he said. "If I wasn't taking care of my kids then you would really dog me out, but I'm taking care of my kids, providing for my family. I don't know what else to say." .

The controversy surrounding All My Babies' Mamas isn't from Shawty Lo skipping out on his fatherly responsibilities. The issue many people have with the show is that Shawty Lo and all his babies' mamas seem so undisturbed by the potentially dysfunctional and perhaps even reckless disregard for child and family development. We applaud Shawty Lo for providing the means for his family to survive and live financially well Lo but misses the point. All My Babies' Mamas showcases petty drama and an indifference to commitment and stability — while attempting to glamoroize having 11 kids by 10 differen women — all because Shawty Lo is a local celebrity.

Shawty Lo's baby mama situation might be a product of his rough childhood. In remembering his youth, he says, "I came to be one of the largest drug dealers to come from Atlanta, Bankhead area and I started haven' kids. When the money came, a lot of women came," said Shawty Lo. "Once you feel like a girl was your girlfriend or whatever, the rubber probably came off." He continued, "They wouldn't have an abortion. They used to take the money and run with it, and they'd have a baby by the most popular guy in the street, and that's how I had all them kids."

You can watch the full preview for All My Babies' Mamas starring Shawty Lo below.
