Supergirl: Will The Flash crossover take the show off the air for good?

$

CBS officially announced in February that universes will collide in the March 28 episode of Supergirl, when Barry Allen — aka The Flash — finds himself in National City. Crossovers on superhero shows are pretty much the norm these days, and it's been widely speculated that this crossover in particular was planned to help Supergirl ratings.

But after watching tonight's episode with Kara Zor-El and crew, I can't help but wonder: Could the Supergirl/The Flash crossover actually do more harm than good to Supergirl's cause?

More: Why Supergirl's James Olsen has totally got to go

I'm not so sure that after Barry pays his little visit to National City that more viewers won't step up and advocate for The Flash to just absorb Supergirl. Supergirl's story lines are redundant, at best, and Kara might work better as a secondary character on The Flash as opposed to running the show on Supergirl.

Although it would be a shame to watch primetime's first female superhero show leave the air, it's already starting to seem like Supergirl has run its course. Writers might have run out of places to take the show in Season 1, because we're beginning to see an awful lot of recycled plotlines.

Tonight's episode, "Falling," is a prime example. Wasn't this already the third time this season that Supergirl's powers have been compromised? Sure, she didn't lose her strength, like in "Human for a Day" and "For the Girl Who Has Everything," but she's definitely not effectively saving anyone after being exposed to Red Kryptonite.

Not to mention that Kara's behavior in tonight's episode was taking a page right out of The Flash episode that featured Rainbow Raider.

More: Supergirl fails its feminist mission by pitting women against women

As mentioned above, many viewers have already hypothesized that the crossover is a strategy to help strengthen Supergirl's ratings.

"LOL. I guess they think this is going to bring in more viewers and boost ratings. Too bad nothing can save the ridiculous mess that is Supergirl," "I like The Flash, but something about Supergirl did not click," "They originally said there would NEVER be a crossover, but I guess Supergirl's ratings must need a boost so now it's OK... it's funny how they're not too good for the CW shows when they need help," are just some of the comments Facebook users have made in regard to the crossover.

What if the best option is not an occasional crossover, but to just have Kara join forces with Barry and jump ship to The CW? With the exception of Alex, the secondary characters in Supergirl are meh at best and can totally be taken out of the plot.

Furthermore, viewers have been saying since the beginning of Season 1 that Supergirl seems like a better fit for The CW than CBS, so an absorption does kind of make sense.

Obviously, there are no plans in the works for Supergirl to join The Flash on The CW, and it's likely Supergirl will be picked up for a second season. I'm sure Supergirl fans will vehemently disagree, but if Kara and Barry do have the right chemistry, there's no doubt that it would be better for Supergirl's character development if she joined The Flash's universe for good.

Why do so many mums lie about sleeping with their babies?

More: Ultimate co-sleeping mum hacks her bed to fit 7 (PHOTO)

According to a new survey almost half of mums who sleep with their babies have lied to a midwife, heath visitor or GP about co-sleeping. Of the hundreds of British women who were asked, 46 percent admitted lying about their sleeping habits for fear of being judged for taking their baby into bed with them.

The new survey was carried out by Gentle Parenting whose owner Sarah Ockwell-Smith told The Sunday Times, "In this country we don't like co-sleeping because we think it will create clingy children. But all the research supports that both mums and babies get more sleep when they bed-share. And at five, children who co-slept are no more likely to be in their parents' beds than those who slept in a cot."

Ockwell-Smith's new book, Why Your Baby's Sleep Matters, claims that sharing a bed can be better than using a cot for babies because "everyone gets more sleep and the habit is safe if done correctly" — a view that is sure to reignite the long-running argument over the safety of co-sleeping.

More: 5 ways co-sleeping helped our sleepless infant

Both of my children slept in my bed as babies and my daughter — now 5 — still does most nights. It began as a practical solution for night-time breastfeeding, ensured everyone got the best possible night's sleep and it was also a fantastic bonding experience.

I've never lied about our choice but I can definitely see why lots of mums do. I've had my fair share of disapproving looks when I've spoken about my co-sleeping family. One parent even went as far as to tell me I was putting my child in danger.

Official advice doesn't tell mothers not to take their babies into bed with them. However it says the safest place for a baby to sleep for the first six months is in a cot in their parents' room.

In England and Wales more than 200 babies a year die unexpectedly in their sleep and some experts believe that co-sleeping, combined with other factors, might have a role in the deaths.

Mark Baker, director of the NICE Centre for Clinical Practice, said: "We don't know what causes these babies to die suddenly but we do know that if a parent smokes, drinks alcohol or takes drugs then SIDS is potentially more likely to occur if they then co-sleep with their infant."

This is the key point: co-sleeping can be safe if done correctly. And the risk with lying about co-sleeping to healthcare professionals is that new parents don't receive the important advice they need about how to sleep safely beside their infant.

For starters you should never sleep beside your baby if you or your partner are smokers (no matter where or when you smoke and even if you never smoke in bed), have recently drunk alcohol or have taken medication or drugs that make you sleep more heavily, warns the NHS.

The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) offers the following guidelines for co-sleeping safely with your baby:

  • Make sure your baby can't fall out of the bed or become trapped between the mattress and the wall.
  • Keep your baby cool by using sheets and blankets rather than a duvet.
  • Ensure bedding does not cover your baby's face or head.
  • Always put your baby to sleep on their back rather than their front or side.
  • Never use a pillow — babies don't need a pillow until they are at least a year old. They should also be kept away from parents' pillows.
  • Never risk falling asleep with your baby on a sofa or armchair.

Joan Bakewell apologises for 'anorexia is narcissism' comment

More: Learning more about anorexia may help you save someone's life

"I am alarmed by anorexia among young people, which arises presumably because they are preoccupied with being beautiful and healthy and thin," Bakewell, 82, told The Sunday Times. "No one has anorexia in societies where there is not enough food. They do not have anorexia in the camps in Syria. I think it's possible anorexia could be about narcissism.

To be unhappy because you are the wrong weight is a sign of the overindulgence of our society, over-introspection, narcissism, really."

Bakewell also said in the interview that the current fashion for psychotherapy and counselling — even for children — "can get out of hand."

Young men and women who have battled anorexia criticised Bakewell for her comments and suggested that they showed a misunderstanding of eating disorders in society.

On Monday the Labour peer and veteran broadcaster apologised for her comments, acknowledging the "enormous upset" she had caused, reported MailOnline. She used her platform as chairman of the Wellcome Book Prize — which focuses on books with medicine, health or illness as themes — to apologise.

"I naively participated in a speculative conversation, expressing off-the-cuff remarks, without reference to evidence or current thinking," said Bakewell. "Now that has caused enormous upset and I am deeply distressed that it should have caused so much pain."

When asked if she had changed her mind she replied, "I'm withholding my opinion… I'm keeping it to myself until I know more."

However many spoke out in support of Bakewell's comments including comedienne Jenny Eclair, who had anorexia herself in the late '70s and early '80s, and TV presenter Dr. Christian Jessen.

Eclair said her own experience had been caused by "self-obsession and sheer panic" and Jessen pointed out that some studies suggest eating-disorder sufferers do display "elements of narcissism."

The Supersize vs Superskinny presenter said: "Joan [Bakewell] was a victim of the usual Twitter Offended. She was actually right. I’m amazed no one said so. I posted a study showing up to 15 per cent do [display such signs]. So clearly she wasn't completely wrong. It's a fact. I'm merely pointing out the evidence. It's not all, but it is some. If she was guilty of anything then it was oversimplifying and making generalisations.

"I strongly suspect much of the indignation came from a lack of understanding of the word narcissism," he added. "I also think that to many narcissism equals vanity. I use it in the psychiatric sense of narcissistic personality disorder. Please show me research showing that narcissistic personality types play no part in anorexia. Then you can call me an idiot."

James Arkwell, consultant psychiatrist and specialist in eating disorders among young adults at the Nightingale Hospital in northwest London, told The Sunday Times: "Anorexia is really driven by a need for control, not by narcissism."

Bakewell is entitled to her opinion — as we all are. Rather than get angry about her comments, we should use this opportunity to raise awareness of what anorexia actually is: a serious mental illness. That's a fact and not something that should be up for debate. So let's make that the big news story — not the fact that an 82-year-old woman has offended people on Twitter.

The boldness of this new trend is arguably a sign of body love. Makeup artist Afton Williams says that, while the contour palette still has its place, the emphasis on hiding "flaws" strips women of their individuality. "We shouldn't have to paint a pie chart of browns and whites on our faces to feel beautiful — or worse yet, to feel like someone else," she states.

The bare-face trend is one way of fighting against social norms. But so too is a unique pop of colour.

The Bachelor totally lied, and I'll never trust Chris Harrison again

Tonight's finale of The Bachelor was romantic, I'll give it that, but it was seriously lacking in the drama that Chris Harrison and the show have been promising all season long.

More: Ben Higgins' ex has some bad news for The Bachelor contestants

These were all the things said by Harrison and the show at one point or another that didn't end up delivering.

First, Ben's conflict between the women? Easily decided after their final dates. He knew who he was going to propose to by the time he picked out the ring!

Then the promised big decision from Ben's mom? Not so much of a decision as an encouragement.

And what about that dramatic phone call? Not so dramatic. It was to Lauren's dad asking for his official permission to propose to Lauren.

Finally, that seemingly big cry session from Ben? Short-lived and quickly turned to joy by Lauren's arrival.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that all parties involved found their happily ever after. So stoked that JoJo is going to be The Bachelorette. But that doesn't make up for the show's lies and clever editing. Let. Down.

More: The Bachelor's Emily Maynard throws shade at the franchise

Now, let's get into the After the Final Rose special where Harrison propositioned the couple with an impromptu wedding. Rather than calling this the most dramatic The Bachelor finale, maybe we should call it the most awkward. I know I wasn't the only one who thought that rose arch was tacky! And the pastor just kinda chilled in the shadows.

But leave it to Ben to make an awkward situation shine. Ben re-proposed to Lauren so they could do it in front of their families, and he and Lauren proudly displayed their new big, beautiful family. Now that's how you honor a new proposal.

Listen, I know I said in my title that this was a breakup article. But this might be an on-again, off-again relationship, just so you know. But right now, it's definitely off.

Were you as disappointed with the lack of drama on The Bachelor finale as I was?

Madonna has strange, sexual breakdown during concert (VIDEO)

Madonna's personal troubles seem to be weighing heavily on her mind, and during her show at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia, her behavior took a very strange and unexpected turn.

More: Madonna's Philippines concert is a spectacle of TMI

Madonna was performing on stage and riding around on a tricycle before falling off, and then taking a swig of the closest drink to her. But the large bottle, of what looked like vodka, was actually not alcohol (she even told the crowd as much when she exclaimed, "This isn't even real."). She then took out a fan's hip flask and began to chug, sparking rumors that she had been drunk during her performance.

Madonna reportedly drunk onstage

Apparently, Madonna's recent mood swings stem back to the custody loss of her son, Rocco. As reports previously revealed, the teen made the decision to live with his father, Guy Ritchie, much to the disappointment of Madonna — and according to Oh No They Didn't!, she addressed her problems while on stage in a pretty NSFW way.

More: Madonna furious over Guy Ritchie’s latest ploy to keep their son

According to the publication, she called Ritchie "a son of a bitch," and then and begged, "Someone please f*** me."

Madonna reportedly also made an emotional plea during the concert, saying, "Somebody take care of me, please. Who is going to take care of me?"

Watch the full video below (be warned: it contains a lot of swearing).

But it should also be noted that Madonna's sexually charged jokes were just that, jokes. Madonna is known to be sexual, so this is nothing new. Could people have misinterpreted what she said? Could it have been taken out of context?

Many publications and even fans claimed that Madonna had a boozy meltdown, but this is something she has been quick to refute — again, it's important to note that Madonna's shows are heavily choreographed and near-perfect every time, something that would be incredibly hard to pull off drunk.

Taking to Instagram, she reposted a comment from a fan who was defending her from the recent media onslaught. She captioned the post with, "Thanks for supporting me. Too bad people don't know the art of acting and playing a character. I could never do any of my shows high or drunk.

"And yes underlying all of this is sexism and mysongony [sic] which proves that not only do we not get equal pay bUt [sic] we are still treated like heretics if we step out of line and think outside the box! Sexism is alive and kicking but i am #livingforlove."

Pretty Little Liars star teases Uber A's identity reveal

Pretty Little Liars' Season 6 finale is tomorrow and it promises to be, like usual, full of big answers that lead to some more big questions.

More: 14 things Pretty Little Liars gets wrong about your early 20s

But this finale will be different in that the answers we're getting are happening much more quickly than fans are used to, namely the reveal of Uber A is coming in hot.

We chatted with the show's new it-girl Kara Royster, who plays Toby's love interest Yvonne in Season 6, to get the scoop on the finale. She said, namely, that it's going to be more surprising than anyone expects.

"If you think you know, you don't," she teased, which sounds to me like the PLL motto.

Royster added that she thinks Uber A is "someone that we haven't seen a lot, someone who's going to kind of pop out and it's going to be like, 'Oh, right! I forgot!'"

Could Uber A also be the twin? It's possible since showrunner I. Marlene King said the twin reveal in the finale will be the "biggest reveal of all," according to TV Line. Even bigger than the CeCe reveal, apparently.

More: Pretty Little Liars cast dishes about the new relationships in 6B

"It's huge, it's nuts!" Royster said about how she thinks fans will react.

Of course, Royster said the finale will stick with the feel of all Pretty Little Liars' season finales.

"I mean, it's still Pretty Little Liars," Royster explained about the scale of the answers. "Where there are answers there are more questions."

As for Royster's character Yvonne, she said that things with Spencer are going to get a little more heated in the finale as Yvonne begins to questions where Toby's heart really lies.

"I wouldn't be surprised if coming up she gets a little more suspicious," Royster said.

Though she doesn't think Yvonne is bad or has any secret motives, she did add, "It's the first time in five years that I [my character] thought that he still might have feelings for Spencer. I think the reason that Yvonne is so nice to Spencer is that she thinks she isn't even a threat."

More: Pretty Little Liars' Ezra can't possibly be CeCe's killer

As for whether Spencer and Toby will reunite? Well, probably not in this episode since Royster said she's in talks to return in Season 7, which means she'll still be in the picture.

But it could be the beginning of the end for these two.

Is it bad that the thought of Spencer and Toby reuniting has me feeling kinda sad? Caleb and Spencer are actually really growing on me!

The Voice's Christina Aguilera sends the wrong singer home

The audition process on The Voice has already come to a close, so now, it's time for the chosen singers to duke it out with one another. At this point in the competition, viewers still don't know a whole lot about the members of the coaches' teams, but even so, many of the show's superfans have already grown attached to this season's singers. If it's already this hard to see deserving musicians sent home, it's only bound to get worse as the season continues.

More: The Voice's Pharrell astounds with unexpected drum performance (VIDEO)

One of this season's early eliminations was particularly painful, as the unfortunate contestant definitely did not deserve to be sent home so early. Christina Aguilera upset many viewers when, after a spectacular battle featuring Chelsea Gann and Kata Hay, she decided to stick with Hay. Sadly, none of the other coaches were smart enough to pick up Gann for their teams, so she was sent packing.

Although a few viewers are relieved that Hay gets to remain in the competition, most are very, very unhappy about Aguilera's decision — and the other coaches' failure to give Gann the opportunity she deserves. These disappointed viewers took to Twitter en masse to share their outrage, with a few even claiming that Gann was set up to fail.

There is no denying that both Gann and Hay have serious vocal chops. Their rendition of "I'm the Only One" was nothing short of spectacular. However, Gann arguably had the better vocals. Yes, Hay always has great stage presence, but Gann had a nice presence as well — and in the very short time she worked with Aguilera, she made great progress in that regard.

It might be a bit far-fetched to say that Hay's victory means the show is rigged, but it definitely demonstrates some questionable judgment on Aguilera's part. After all, had it been another coach's choice (for example, Pharrell or Blake Shelton), Gann would not have had to depart the competition so soon. In order to win, Aguilera needs to choose the contestant who appeals more to fans, and if tonight's Twitter response is any indication, the obvious choice was Gann.

Jill and Jessa: Counting On premiere upsets viewers over Josh Duggar comments

More: Jinger Duggar may get married on her own TLC spinoff

The Duggars are back! Well, the older ones, and Ben and Anna, and also Spurgeon, and Jill and Derick via video phone from Central America, where a cougar has been sighted in their backyard. On the premiere of Jill and Jessa: Counting On, giant amounts of food were prepared, which included stuffing enormous slabs of butter into a turkey, Jessa and Ben discussed who does what in terms of baby chores (apparently, he's in charge of "output" and she's in charge of "input"), and Anna went to visit Josh in "therapy."

More: Jessa Duggar's adoption plans put on hold

There was no way a show about the older Duggar siblings was going to be able to avoid mentioning Josh — after all, this whole 19 Kids and Counting spinoff business started because of the abuse scandal that befell the family and, in particular, Jill and Jessa. While some fans praised Anna for sticking with her marriage, the majority of those tweeting during the first episode of Counting On were disgusted when Josh's name was mentioned early in the episode when Anna was seen preparing to visit him — and when she returned, still determined to stick with her marriage (despite Josh having made some "wrong choices") and continuing to love her husband when others had deemed him unlovable.

There are many things that are likely to happen in this season of Counting On: Jana and/or Jinger and/or one of the older boys might start courting/being courted. Jessa and Ben will have various parenting adventures. Large quantities of food will continue to be prepared and served to large quantities of people. The family will take a trip to Central America to visit Jill and Derick. The girls will probably go shopping and then talk about how when you're from a big family, you have to make sacrifices and sometimes it's difficult. Josh's name is going to keep coming up — his siblings are still talking to him (his brothers admitted that they are, despite the fact that it's hard), and TLC is more than aware that one of the reasons people are watching the show is because of Josh and his impact on the family. But one of the things that definitely won't be happening, however, on or off the show, is Anna leaving Josh. It's a sad truth, but one we're going to have to accept, at least for the foreseeable future, which means viewers are going to have to decide if they can enjoy Counting On knowing that Josh is going to be taking up space on it, even if he's not actually onscreen.

5 signs Maddie Ziegler has already checked out of Dance Moms

Maddie Ziegler's eventual ALDC departure has seemed like an inevitability for ages, and yet, many Dance Moms viewers were shocked when she recently announced her intention to move on to bigger and better opportunities. But during tonight's episode (which was filmed long before she made the official announcement), several signs made it seem obvious that Ziegler was getting ready to say goodbye.

1. She's so over the drama

Having worked in a constructive environment, Maddie Ziegler was exposed to all kinds of different choreographers and producers, none of whom were probably half as unprofessional and obnoxious as Abby Lee Miller. Why would Ziegler deal with Dance Moms drama if she doesn't have to?

2. She and Abby Lee Miller don't seem nearly as close

Miller and Ziegler used to be best buds, but that certainly hasn't been the case during the latest season of Dance Moms. In fact, in one episode, Miller actually seemed to be jealous of her once favorite student's success.

3. Melissa Gisoni no longer plays ball

At one time, Melissa Gisoni was the biggest teacher's pet on Dance Moms. Recently, however, she has begun to stick up for her daughters — especially Mackenzie, who, unlike her big sister, has never been Miller's favorite. Perhaps Gisoni's newfound animosity toward Miller made it easier for her and her daughters to ditch the show.

4. She just doesn't seem invested in the team

Throughout the entirety of the latest season, Ziegler has been as eager to win as ever... but something has just felt different. She no longer truly feels like a member of the ALDC. And, prior to the official announcement regarding her departure, her insistence that she was a lifetime ALDC dancer seemed really disingenuous.

5. She's way too busy

Perhaps the biggest reason for Ziegler's departure is that she can no longer juggle the demands of filming Dance Moms with her numerous other gigs. After all, she's constantly shooting TV shows and movies. What's more, she's now the youngest judge on So You Think You Can Dance. Clearly, she has other, more important projects to occupy her time.

When it comes to fan reactions to Ziegler's departure, it's a mixed bag. Some are happy to see her go and others... not so much. Many are questioning whether Ziegler is leaving both the ALDC and Dance Moms or just the show. The following are a few of the many reactions to the big news.

Dance Moms will definitely not be the same without Ziegler, but she has a very bright future. It will be fun to follow her career and see what she accomplishes as she takes her next big step toward stardom.

Kerry Washington addresses rumors that she's headed for divorce

Remember when Kerry Washington gave birth a few years ago? Me either, because she kept it a secret. Despite her starring role on a network show with Scandal, Washington is notoriously private. In lieu of discussing any actual personal details in a new interview with Elle, she opens up about her policy not to share her private life — and it makes for a fascinating read. We can all learn what it's like to have (or raise) a child. A celebrity talking about the lengths she'll go to to shield her life from media coverage? Now that's newsworthy. Celebs, they're not just like us.

Washington discusses her choice to use her social media primarily to promote her projects — and she does promote, as those who follow her live tweeting of Scandal each week know — as opposed to crafting a personal brand. "Social media has actually been great for [other celebrities'] relationships with the weeklies or the gossip sites because people say things and they say, ‘That's not true! Just so you know, that's BS!' I say ‘BS' because it's Sunday. So I'm thinking in some ways, it's been great because people are able to maintain their voice," she says.

Recently, rumors bounced around that Washington was divorcing her ex-football player husband Nnamdi Asomugha. True to form, she stayed silent. "If I don't talk about my personal life, it means I don't talk about my personal life," she said according to E! Online. "That means not only did I not tell you when I was getting married, it also means if somebody has rumors about what's going on in my marriage, I don't refute them, because I don't talk about my personal life."

Of Kings and Prophets: Would Ahinoam be more likable as a modern woman?

ABC's new Biblical drama Of Kings and Prophets has largely been panned by critics as a "swords-and-sandals slog" — a dizzying world of epic drama that fails to achieve the sharply drawn narrative of the show it's repeatedly been compared to, Game of Thrones.

In case you missed it, the show follows King Saul as he tries to unite the 12 tribes of Israel. When a shepherd/lute player crosses his path in the form of young David, the prophet Samuel withdraws his blessing of Saul. As we now know from next week's teaser — and the Bible, too — David is the future king.

But while so many of the main characters thus far feel watered down or over-reaching, one character has achieved enough emotional investment to have viewers form a strong opinion: Saul's wife, Queen Ahinoam.

More: Of Kings and Prophets is a religious show that won't fly with Christians

Various reviews and recaps have described her as scheming or manipulative. She is painted as a power-hungry woman just trying to pull the strings as though she is her husband's puppet master. Clearly, she is emerging as a polarizing character.

Watching tonight's episode, though, I couldn't help but wonder, would Ahinoam be considered so unlikable now? And the more I watched, the more I began to feel that viewers are seeing her through an anachronistic lens.

Many of the things that Ahinoam does would not have been viewed kindly during ancient times. In fact, some likely wouldn't have even been allowed. At the time, women were still considered second-class citizens. Actually, less than that really — we were essentially property or commodities.

Women weren't expected to have a voice.

So when Ahinoam interjects during a particularly tense meeting of the tribes tonight to speak on her husband's behalf, she is cast as calculating.

Really, though, I found the moment to be pretty empowering. She was able to articulate the needs of her people in a way the king could not manage. She struck me as a strong and capable woman standing there unflinching as she faced a sea of angry men.

Sure, she comes off as stern with her daughters at times. This seems to fall in line with the notion that she is tough because she has to be — for a woman in a position of power, any softness during that time would have been interpreted as inferiority or weakness.

Of course, Ahinoam arguably created the most controversy at the episode's end when she propositions and subsequently beds David, the very man her youngest daughter is obviously falling for.

Image: ABC

She'll likely be lampooned for this by viewers, but c'mon. For starters, her husband openly lives with his concubine and routinely chooses to bring her into his bed over the queen. To Saul, Ahinoam is a political pawn or a placeholder of power.

So in a seeming moment of vulnerability, she reaches out to a man she sees something desirable in. As for the connection between David and her daughter, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't know that Ahinoam realizes what's been brewing there.

A complex woman who is sexually liberated, smart and strong? Today, she'd probably be branded a badass or a feminist. She'd be viewed in a favorable light in all likelihood (at least the portion of her character we've seen so far; it remains to be seen if she turns truly nefarious).

Does the fact that Ahinoam comes from the Bible have further bearing on the negative perception of her actions? If this show took place in modern day — imagine Ahinoam as a political figure — would she still be considered so polarizing?

It's interesting to look back and consider how the passage of time has shifted the narrative on what is deemed appropriate behavior for women.

All of this to say I'm kind of digging Ahinoam. As a modern woman, I admire her moxie and wonder what history would have looked like if more women were allowed to flex theirs or given due credit for the accomplishments their moxie netted the men in their lives.

Why The Real O'Neals' use of the F-word is genius

Tonight’s episode of The Real O’Neals was a make or break episode for the series, and it definitely passed with flying colors. Kenny headed back to school after outing himself to the world — and if you know anything about TV, you know that the gay high school character’s life is always handled like a PSA. The show could have lost its humor while it tried to teach a lesson, but it addressed the subject in a completely new way and remained really funny.

More: 7 times the show put a new spin on old sins

During the first couple minutes of the show, we see Kenny freaking out so much about returning to high school now that he’s out. His anxiety gets to be so much so that he calls himself the terrible F-word to one of his classmates. It was such an unexpected way to handle the entire situation. I’ve seen so many shows depict the topic of bullying, especially of gay students, but I’ve never seen a gay kid call himself that word. By doing so, however, The Real O’Neals avoided trying to be educational and could simply be a normal sitcom dealing with real issues in a funny way.

More: The Real O'Neals totally steals a Modern Family plot — but stays original

The difference The Real O’Neals makes by taking gravity away from the word is subtle but so important. The only way to send the message that being gay is not only normal, but a non-issue, is to treat it like that — in comedy and real life. The writers on The Real O’Neals understood that they had to make an episode about being gay in high school, but they also were smart enough not to fall into the same traps almost every show before them fell into.

More: Modern Family drops the F-bomb

Unfortunately, they could not handle the story line of the parents' divorce with the same freshness. But if the show sticks to the story of Kenny and tells it in a fresh way, there’s no end in sight for them.

Diverse Playmobil toys could help children to accept different cultures

The conflicts in war-torn Syria and Iraq have brought an influx of immigrants to the U.K. and it's often difficult for children from different countries to settle into school.

However psychologists may have found a simple way of encouraging pupils to welcome children from unfamiliar cultures.

More: New poster campaign celebrates immigrants in the U.K. (VIDEO)

Psychologists at Goldsmiths, University of London, believe ethnically diverse Playmobil figures will help pupils overcome a fear of difference and embrace friendships across racial divides, reports the BBC.

Psychologists were inspired by the results of research they previously conducted on Playmobil figures in wheelchairs.

Dr. Sian Jones, a psychologist specialising in the way children cope with diversity, said, "It seems to work very well in terms of getting them to think about engaging with disabled children and getting over any issues or perceived problems about playing with them."

More: Parents can now opt their kids out of classes involving Muslims

Assumptions and generalisations about the ethnic origin of immigrants often leads to stereotyping and hostility, which has presented schools with new challenges as they attempt to tackle these issues. The hope is now that role play with these toys could help promote more diverse friendships between British schoolchildren.

"We are going to get them to imagine they are in 'golden time,' and then to ask them to pick up the Playmobil and tell them that the figure is a recently arrived pupil and get them to imagine what playing with them would look like," Dr. Jones said.

Dr. Jones and Professor Adam Rutland will spend a year working with children between the ages of five and nine across various London schools, TES reports.

They intend to ask children to play with these diverse Playmobil figures just once, for about three minutes.

Researchers will then evaluate how the children felt before and after they played with the figures and measure their anxiety levels to determine how the new experience has affected them.

More: 15 Inspiring life lessons teachers have passed on to their students

After playing with the toys, the schoolchildren will be asked to look at profiles of immigrants online and answer a series of questions about their feelings towards them, including whether they would share toys with these children. The reactions will be measured against children who have been asked to "imagine a friendship with an immigrant child."

Hopefully the toys will have a positive influence on children and encourage them to pursue a real-life friendship with their new classmates.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if something as simple as a tiny plastic toy could help bridge social divides?

Fans react to Henry Cavill's comments about double standards

As a good-looking man, it's no wonder Henry Cavill gets so much attention from the opposite sex but the actor recently claimed that this attention often crosses the line into harassment.

More: Henry Cavill's rumoured new girlfriend is the last celebrity we'd expect

Speaking during an interview with The Sunday Times Cavill spoke about catcalling, a form of street harassment that many women experience on a daily basis, and the "double standards" he believes exist for men and women.

"I do think there's a bit of a double standard, you know," Cavill stated.

"I mean, if a girl shouts something like 'Oi, love, fancy a shag?' to me as I walk past I do sometimes wonder how she'd feel if a builder said that to her. Although, of course, I wouldn't feel physically threatened, as she might."

Cavill's statement raises two issues. Firstly, harassment is harassment and women should not be harassing men. However the difference is that men do not typically fear for their safety when walking alone — a point acknowledged by Cavill himself. Nor are men's body parts often called into the equation whereas women often have to deal with comments like "nice breasts" or "nice ass," which can make them feel intimidated or insecure.

Secondly, it's not just women who are harassed on the street but also underage girls. According to The Independent, a study conducted across the world by Hollaback charity and Cornell University found that 84 percent of women had been harassed on the street before they reached the age of 17.

Many people didn't agree with Cavill's statements and took to Twitter to voice their opinions.

Other comments in support of Cavill include one from Tom Blakeney who wrote, "Finally, someone in the spotlight has said it!" And Peter C. Barnes tweeted, "I think Henry Cavil has a point here #catcalling #sexism."

And it's not just men who agree. Jennifer tweeted, "i am in total agreement with Him!! #HenryCavill got it right. Nobody should harass! [sic]"

Chicken, bacon and leek pot pie recipe

Makes 4 individual pies or 1 large

Ingredients:

  • 5 medium potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 1 leek
  • 200 grams bacon lardons
  • 500 grams chicken
  • 1 tin Campbell's condensed mushroom soup
  • Olive oil (for frying - approx. 1 tsp)
  • Large knob of butter (optional)

Time saving hack: you can find ready-made mash and chopped leeks in the prepared vegetable or freezer section of most major supermarkets. A pack of around 400g of mashed potato is sufficient and you will need around 100g of ready chopped leeks. Buy diced bacon lardons and chicken so the preparation is already done for you.

Directions:

  1. Set the oven to 180 degrees C (Gas Mark 4).
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large non-stick frying pan and add the chopped leek. Fry until softened.
  3. Whilst the leek cooks, add the chopped potatoes to a large pan of boiling water. Boil for around 30 minutes or until soft.
  4. Add the bacon lardons to the leek and continue to fry until the bacon begins to brown.
  5. Next add the diced chicken and cook through, turning the pieces regularly to ensure they cook on both sides.
  6. Add the can of condensed soup to the pan and stir until all the ingredients are thoroughly coated.
  7. Whilst the pie mixture simmers, drain the potatoes and mash them with a large knob of butter.
  8. Transfer the pie mix to either 1 large or 4 individual pie dishes and top with the mashed potato.
  9. Use a fork lightly to make straight, wavy or diagonal lines across the top of the mash before transferring the pie(s) to the oven and cooking until the potato is browned (around 20 minutes).

What I've learned from getting pampered at spas in over 50 countries

$

0

As a globetrotter and self-confessed spa junkie, I’ve experienced pampering in more than 50 countries. I go to every spa with an open mind and a go-with-the-flow attitude.

Soaking in a vat of beer in the Czech Republic? Sure. Tiny fish nibbling away at dry skin on my feet in a Malaysia? Tickly, but bring it. I’ve been covered with avocados, honey, crystals, crushed grape seeds, smelly mud, seaweed, Jamaica coffee, seashells and chocolate. I’m game as long as it feels good.

More: 10 most luxurious spa treatments

But, when during a facial at a spa in Bath, England, my facialist said I should drink my own urine, claiming it would clear up the pimples on my chin, it was truly a moment of monumental weirdness. Not a chance. I draw the line there. She did her best to convince me that was a credible way to boost my health — even writing down websites and book recommendations to check out. I was too shocked to utter a word and left the treatment room as quickly as I could.

Awkwardness seem to be a kind of norm when you put yourself in the hands of strangers who will be touching you, sometimes while you’re naked. Sometimes, it makes colorful memories, like the massage therapist in Budapest who couldn’t stop farting while she dug her thumbs into the knots in my back like she was mining for diamonds. Or the hamam attendant at a spa in Winnipeg, Canada, who concluded my rub down with olive oil soap with one firm slap delivered to my bare bottom.

More: I tried the bird poop facial that promises beautiful skin

At a resort on the coast of the Red Sea in Egypt, my male massage therapist took things further and massaged my breasts — without asking. While it’s not normal practice, on occasion, I’ve been asked if it’s OK to treat my décolleté — usually during a facial. I grabbed his wrist and moved his hand to a more appropriate area. My travel companion also had a strange experience during his massage here. The woman doing his treatment tickled the hair of his underarms and whispered “I love you” to him at the end of the session. Later, once the shock subsided, we couldn’t stop laughing about this for days.

Other times, I have been the one providing comic relief. In Evian, France, the spas are hydration obsessed, since this is where chi-chi Evian water comes from. Even at the reception desk, the staff was handing me bottles of the stuff to down, then more in the locker room, and even more as you wait for your therapist in the relaxation room. My facial involved some sort of elaborate masque of paper strips and clay carefully arranged on my skin that would do its magic over 20 minutes.

More: 10 spas around the world to get gorgeous at

Soon after my aesthetician left the room, I had to pee — desperately — thanks to all that freaking water. “Madame? Madame!?,” I called, but to no avail. I got up and went in search of her and a washroom, while holding my face held up toward the ceiling to ensure whatever miracles were happening to my skin would be undisturbed. I gingerly navigated my way down a spiral staircase and to the front desk. When the aesthetician saw me, clutching towels around my naked upper body and head twisted skyward like I was trying to spot a rare bird in a tree, all she could say was, “Mon dieu! (My God!),” before she and her colleagues started chuckling.

I caused a similar reaction when I accidentally stumbled into a locker room of naked Hungarian men at the Szechenyi Baths in Budapest while navigating my way through the maze of hallways and staircases to get to my massage appointment. The men just laughed at my horrified face and pointed me to the exit. There were more man bits on show when I was in Baden Baden last summer. I thought my friend and I were going to Friedrichsbad, the traditional, i.e., naked, bathhouse, on ladies’ day. When we got halfway through the circuit of steam rooms and soaking pools, we suddenly realized it was co-ed time, as a parade of bouncy penises went by. We tried not to gawk and to act German. That means not noticing, or caring, about the naked flesh in front of you.

My spa time has not all been pleasant. On occasion, I have felt like I paid for the privilege of being tortured. At a hair salon that also offered aesthetics in Toronto, I was left with burn marks all over my back after a brutal hot stone massage. In Maui, my nose was badly bruised, courtesy of a forceful therapist who went after a blackhead like it was a matter of life or death. Luckily, my spa-induced injuries have been minimal.

At a really good spa, I can lose myself in the experience. That doesn’t happen often because I have a busy brain that won’t shut up but I did manage to do it in Bali. I went there a month after my mom died from ovarian cancer. As I lay in a stone bathtub in a private courtyard at the spa at the Four Seasons at Jimbaran Bay, I could hear chanting from the Buddhist temple next to the property. The sound seeped into my core. I cried, letting the grief I had stuffed down pour out of me.

I often get asked what is my favorite spa. I couldn’t pick just one. Besides those in Bali, I feel wonderfully content at the Willow Stream Spa at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess (fabulous pool area), or the Ancient Cedars Spa at The Wickaninnish Inn near Tofino on Vancouver Island, British Columbia (foot soaks next to the roaring waves of the Pacific). But good spas don’t have to be fancy. In December, I had an excellent pedicure for $5 with a head and neck massage for $3 in a simple, one-room place in Yangon, Myanmar (Burma). All I ask of a spa is that you treat me nicely — and if you don’t ask me to drink my own pee, I’ll be happy.
