Grey's Anatomy: Why it's cool Arizona reclaimed the word 'slutty' for women

More: Grey's Anatomy: Why the Japril episode worked despite all the weirdness

As Arizona emerges dressed and ready for her date with a casual dalliance only known to us as "Artisanal Soap" for the lovely smell lingering on said woman, something is obviously nagging at Richard.

Richard tenders, "Someone like you deserves someone very special, a quality person. And I worry if you squander your heart with all of these many, many more frivolous..."

Naturally, Arizona stops him there. You can't be a wing man and a father figure, dude. Then the good lady doctor delivers by far my most favorite line of the night: "I'm too young and too fun to spend the rest of my life alone, and I was too scared to try. But you helped me remember what it was like when I was open and fun and confident and a little... slutty. You helped me be slutty again."

Oh, Arizona, how I love thee in this moment. Here's the thing about Arizona's use of that specific word — it was intentional. It was spoken with intent by her character and it was written with intent by the writers.

Is it a word that can be polarizing? Sure, but that's precisely why her use of it is so very relevant and important. In using the term in such an empowered way, Arizona reclaimed it. She is shifting the paradigm of power back in women's favor.

Bear with me for a minute while I draw an analogy here. There's a line in one of my favorite movies, Practical Magic (come on, you know you love it, too), where Sheriff Hallet says, "Curses only have power when you believe them."

This principle can be roughly applied to sexist and derogatory terms used against women. When used with malicious intent, these words can carry weight — if we let them. I say roughly, of course, because this in no way excuses or justifies the use of these words as weapons against women.

More: Grey's Anatomy cliffhanger means Meredith's love life may be steaming up

But what if we take those words back when opportunity presents, as Arizona did? An intended barb from someone does far less damage when the insult they're slinging is a term we've flipped the script on. A good example of this in everyday vernacular is the term "bitch."

Whereby bitch was once solely viewed as an expletive of sorts aimed at women, we've taken to using it with each other almost as a term of endearment. Or as a compliment, i.e. "She's a bad bitch."

So what is the definition of slutty? Merriam-Webster defines the adjective as "having loose sexual morals." But, really, what does that even mean? Who defines what sexual morals are loose?

The movement to reclaim this specific slang term has actually been underway for a while now. In the book The Ethical Slut, the word is defined as "a person of any gender who has the courage to lead life according to the radical proposition that sex is nice and pleasure is good for you."

In this context, a slut is simply a person who is in control of their sexuality and refuses to conform to societal standards as opposed to doing what feels best and is best for them as an individual.

In my opinion, one of the most refreshing things about this season of Grey's Anatomy is the sense of sexual liberation among the women. Sure, in the past there have been many steamy sexcapades in the on-call room.

However, there was always the hint of impropriety in regard to the women who were sexually brazen. This season, there is no stigma. As the conversation between Arizona and Richard so smartly illustrates, being "slutty" doesn't make Arizona any less of an "outstanding surgeon" or "extraordinary woman."

More: Shonda Rhimes: "I hope my daughters grow up to have amazing sex"

She is a grown-ass woman who enjoys sex. Why is that an issue for some people? A woman can still be virtuous and, in many ways, demure and still enjoy sex. Just look at April Kepner. Most would consider her character to be perhaps the most conservative on the show, but she has had her fair share of hot romps — yes, even before marriage.

The fact that Arizona chose to use the term slutty in such an innocuous way goes to show that it doesn't have to be pejorative. Here, it's simply a slang descriptor. The implication has migrated from negative to positive.

Just think of it as the female equivalent of, what's that they call sexually experienced men? A playboy? A stud? A Lothario? Yeah, it's like that.

Starbucks' latest initiative proves they value breastfeeding mums

More: Mums asked to move to back of restaurant to make room for men

The coffee chain is taking huge steps in a bid to become more appealing to breastfeeding mothers, offering them a place where they can enjoy their beverage of choice without getting nasty glances and being made to feel unwelcome (at least not from the baristas), as they roll out a new programme which will see staff being trained on how to deal with breastfeeding mums.

According to The Huffington Post, Starbucks is the first company to have partnered with the National Childbirth Trust's Parent Friendly Places Charter to provide bespoke training for the thousands of baristas it employs in over 800 stores across the U.K.

The initiative is an admirable one and hopes to offer parents a space where they feel welcome and supported with access to all relevant facilities, where possible, as well as providing assistance from staff should they need it.

But more than that it's an opportunity to eradicate the negativity that so many women face while trying to perform one of human nature's most natural acts in a public space: trying to feed their child. It's a heated topic and one that has seen many women asked to stop breastfeeding their child in public as it offends other patrons. Hopefully the implementation of this programme is the first step in the right direction and the chance to provide some much needed change.

More: Starbucks barista's flirty message backfires horribly

"We want all of our customers to have a good experience at Starbucks and we recognise that parents out on their own with very young children, sometimes for the first time, appreciate some support," vice president of operations for Starbucks Rhys Iley said.

"Through working with NCT we have already refreshed our training and improved our facilities," he added. "We hope parents of young children visiting our stores will let us know, there and then, if there is anything we can do to improve their experience."

It seems that the programme will be warmly welcomed by new mums as mum-of-two Tori Chubb shared her thoughts with The Independent, saying, “I was very self-conscious when I was out with my daughter and I imagine many new mothers feel the same way. It will be nice knowing there is somewhere everyone can go where they will be comfortable and the staff won't be shocked seeing someone breastfeed. It will help those with toddlers as well — staff on hand putting young children into high chairs and things like that.”

More: Oscars breast pumping story highlights the plight of all mothers

Dr. Sarah McMullen, head of research and quality at NCT expressed her excitement at the partnership.

"We are proud to launch the first Parent Friendly Places partnership on the High Street with Starbucks, so that parents with young children feel welcome and supported when they walk into a store," she said. "We know from our members that many struggle with unwanted attention and comments on their feeding method whether it's by breast, bottle or in a high chair, when out and about with their baby or child. It's important that parents feel reassured they have the support of staff and won't be judged.

"We also know that it can be a challenge for establishments to understand and assist with the needs of parents with very young children. We believe this Charter will address the challenges parents face on the High Street and hope that other retailers will follow suit in becoming more parent-friendly."

Do you think this partnership should be adopted in all big restaurant chains? Do you think it will help eradicate the stigma attached to breastfeeding in public or are women still bound to face prejudice? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.

How parents can help kids understand their emotions

More: How mindfulness meditation teaches children to manage their emotions

There are so many wonderful explanations for our feelings, with great pictures to accompany them: “Eek! When I see something scary, my heart beats fast. I feel cold, as if a chilly breeze has crawled up my neck, and I run away as fast as I can. This is when my heart is afraid.” I really like the way she describes fear with the physicality of feeling cold and the heart beating faster. These are great explanations to help kids understand their own physical responses to emotions. On this particular page, the illustrator draws what "afraid" looks like.

The writer also looks at sadness and helps the child understand that sadness can occur at times: “But my heart doesn’t stay sad.” I think it's so useful that the book allows for the child to recognize that negative emotions do not have to last. The book really allows for feelings to be described in ways that teaches the child that emotions can change and move. It's descriptive and really easy to understand what each feeling means. I would also add in using this book as resource to teach young children about feelings to also learn about coping tools and emotional management skills.

More: Are your kids emotionally prepared for the school year?

Books, art and music are great tools to help children learn about emotions and understand some difficult concepts. Books, especially, are wonderful instruments as they see the pictures and process concepts that even adults have difficulty grasping.

Feelings and emotions are challenging to manage for some people, so starting to teach children when they are young will help them through the emotional development process. Being able to master emotional management is a skill they will need way into adulthood. I've written before about how sharing your own emotional language with children will help you encourage their emotional awareness.

Feeling development and learning occurs in the family and home even when a child is an infant. We can see a baby smile or cry and can know what feeling are they experiencing even though they cannot tell us verbally. (The website Zero to Three is an excellent resource for parents of little ones.) Learning about feelings and coping tools are very important topics and should be discussed often. As the child grows up, the conversation might change, but the process of being able to open up and share feelings and thoughts is so imperative for good mental health and healthy relationships.

In My Heart: A Book of Feelings is a resource on my office shelf and is often used to help teach little ones about feelings.

5 reality stars who are actually inspiring

0

More: Why 'Vanderpump Rules' is the most fun reality show ever made

Back then, we never would have imagined a day when TV shows would be primarily of the reality genre, yet here we are. Decades away from the gritty realness of a new broadcast experiment, today's series have us keeping up with some very famous, yet vapid, people and observing lifestyles we either envy — or, even more entertainingly, pity.

We watch along as girls are summoned to hilltops thinking they're about to get engaged, only to find out they're runners-up in a real-life love contest. Our eyes stayed glued to the screen as families way more screwed up than ours dealt with pregnancy, cheating, scandal, bigamy, racism and sexism. These days, reality shows have a formula and, whether you believe it or not, some kind of script. There are few truly real moments and even fewer inspirational ones. Something that began as a revolutionary idea has become a three-ring circus. Granted, it's one with millions of fans but a circus none the same.

In a world oversaturated with reality personalities, it might be hard to believe there are actually some truly inspiring ones out there. Much like a needle in an online haystack, these stars can be hard to locate and extract through the surrounding fluff. But make no mistake, they're out there, even if their ability to inspire might be a bit unconventional or atypical. In the 1980s classic Say Anything, Lloyd Dobler's best friend, while advising him on the love of his life, famously said, "The world is full of guys — don't be a guy, be a man." Anyone can be a reality star today; there are a million out there. Don't be a reality star, be an inspiration.

1. Michael "The Miz" Mizanin, The Real World

Bringing it back to the original reality show,The Real World, season 10, Back to New York, introduced us to Michael Gregory Mizanin. Back then, Mizanin was a young, raucous frat guy whose antics were caught onscreen over and over as we followed along with him and his temporary roommates. We also saw a guy running around, perfecting wrestling moves, screaming, "I'm the Miz," while pretending to be a WWE star. What makes this story so cool and shockingly inspiring is that today, Mizanin is exactly that: a famous star in the wrestling world. He's not on MTV All Stars #94 or doing some Z-list show for older reality stars. Instead, he parlayed his fleeting fame into a career he was clearly passionate about from the beginning. If that's not something to aspire to, I don't know what is.

2. Roh Habibi, Million Dollar Listing

Habibi, one of the stars of Million Dollar Listing San Francisco, Bravo's fourth spinoff of its iconic franchise, told Andy Cohen before he ever starred on the show that he was already calling himself a cast member. Apparently, the fake-it-till-you-make-it mantra worked wonders — Habibi got the call from producers last year. With only a few years of real estate under his belt, Habibi already ranks in the top 6 percent in the area. He's another example of manifesting success, and that's what makes this story so inspiring. It's proof that not only can you successfully change career direction, but you can even bring your dreams to fruition, something to which we should all strive, even if a reality star prompts us to do it.

3. Christian Siriano, Project Runway

Back when Project Runway was an exciting, new, stylish spin on reality shows, truly talented designers were harder to spot. Now with dozens of knockoffs and even kid versions, anyone can be a TV fashion designer. What makes a true mark isn't if you can win a soon-to-be-forgotten reality-show finale, it's having staying power. With so many shows, simply taking the top prize is meaningless unless you can do something with it. Dozens of designers earn the acclaim, but few manage to hold onto the success. The complete opposite is true of Siriano. The season-four winner worked his way up to gain the respect of fashionistas. Now, he's officially a go-to for red carpets and for some of the top stars in Hollywood. You wouldn't necessarily correlate the Bravo show with being truly inspirational, but Siriano proves you can still take something special away from a onetime win.

4. Mar Ortiz, Big Women: Big Love

Earlier this year, the star of Lifetime's Big Women: Big Love headed to Instagram, like millions of other women, to post a (supposedly) impromptu selfie. The sexy shot, which captured her getting undressed, prompted an onslaught of both praise and criticism (as is usually the case when celebrities of any level snap an Insta). As the conversation continued, Ortiz was forced to speak up for herself, proclaiming, “I’m overweight, yes. I know that, but I’m not obese and I think there’s a big difference.” Fitness expert Bianca Jade saw things differently, saying the reality star's selfie is inspirational and sends a message of honesty. Truth be told, with so many Photoshopped images in our feeds everywhere, it should seem to follow suit that Ortiz's picture be lauded, not scrutinized. What do you think — is her shot inspiring or too much?

5. Tyler Ford, The Glee Project

Typically, we can barely remember who wins reality shows, let alone who participates. But some non-winners stay relevant in other ways, sometimes based on a desperate need and other times due to real talent. Ford, who went by Brittany in high school, was the reality show's first transgender contestant. Though during the show he was undergoing testosterone treatments for his continued efforts to be fully male, things have now changed. Ford, a writer, has stopped treatments and is still inspiring others by using his writing as a platform to tell a different story, one he told in a poignant piece in Rookie mag as well as a New York Times series. In a world where transgender acceptance is continuing to grow, Ford is clearly intent on being part of the message.

12 expert packing tips to try on your next vacation

0

Then there are the ninja-level tricks for packing the perfect bag, which inevitably will include one of these expert tips.

1. Roll, don't fold

Rolling clothes instead of folding them will save space and prevent wrinkles.

2. Wrap it up

Put a piece of plastic wrap over the openings of bottles before screwing on the cap to prevent leaks.

3. Dust covers

Use those cute (and free!) dust covers that came with your new shoes or purse to organize your suitcase. Use one for undies, another for jeans, etc. Once you get to your destination, use your largest one to hold dirty laundry to save digging through your bags instead of having fun.

More: How to pack carry-on luggage

4. Add a plastic bag

For clothes that wrinkle really easily, put a plastic grocery bag in the middle of the garment, then fold as usual. The extra plastic will keep it from getting totally flattened and stop wrinkles.

5. Boxed and folded

My dad is a career airline pilot, and he gets off every flight looking fresh and crisp. His secret? He takes his uniform shirts to the dry cleaners and asks to have them folded and boxed. The shirts come folded and ready to throw in his suitcase and stay wrinkle-free.

More: How to pack your beauty bag for traveling

6. Pick the right bag

There's no pack hack that can overcome picking the wrong bag. Ideally, you want something light, durable and easy to spot in a crowd of black bags on rollers coming off the plane. I love to travel with Vera Bradley bags like this cute Lighten Up large wheeled duffel bag for all those reasons.

7. Straws

Once you get to your destination, you'll want to change your clothes and start having fun. There's no time to sit around untangling a giant wad of necklaces. String your necklaces through straws to keep them from getting hopelessly tangled inside your bag.

8. Pill organizers

Stash smaller jewelry like rings and stud earrings in a pill organizer to keep it all together and ready to wear.

More: Stress-free vacation packing

9. Shower caps

There's nothing like unpacking your favorite dress to find that it's now complete with a shoe print. Pick up a cheap pack of disposable shower caps and use them to cover the dirty soles of your shoes before sticking them in your suitcase.

10. Sock protection

Perfume bottles and other small, fragile items stay safe stuffed inside of your thickest socks, and then packed as close to the center of your suitcase as possible.

11. Stuff shoes

Get the most out of big shoes that take up precious suitcase real estate by stuffing underwear, socks or anything else that fits inside.

12. Bra + panties = genius

Keep bras and underwear together by rolling up underwear and sticking them in your bra cups, then folding the cups together. This will keep all your undergarments together so you can find them, and keep your bra cups from getting crushed and losing their shape.

1. Life began with Ronald Reagan

"When I say my life began with Ronnie, well, it's true. It did. I can't imagine life without him."

Ronald and Nancy Reagan were a team, but before they joined forces, they were both actors. They had the capability to accomplish great things on their own, but the two admitted that they were always better together.

2. One of many letters from Ronald Reagan

"You should...be aware of how essential you are in this man’s life. By his own admission, he is completely in love with you."

Being on the road was often a lonely ordeal for Ronald Reagan, who comforted himself by writing his wife adoring letters. His chief goal was to show his wife just how much he loved her.

3. An appreciation for Ronald Reagan's letters

"Whenever Ronnie went away, I missed him terribly, and when his letters arrived, the whole world stopped so I could read them."

Nancy Reagan loved her husband's letters so much, she published the entire collection in 2000. As her husband fell victim to Alzheimer's, these letters brought her great comfort, just as they had done in earlier years when he was on the road.

4. Cupid had him in a chokehold

"My request of you is: could you on this day whisper in her ear that someone loves her very much and more and more each day."

A few weeks before their silver anniversary, Ronald Reagan wrote an adorable letter to Cupid. It felt like something a newlywed would write. This letter exemplifies how, as the years went by, he never ceased being loving and playful.

5. An important job

'My job is being Mrs. Ronald Reagan."

Nancy Reagan never thought of herself as an actress or as the First Lady. In her opinion, Mrs. Reagan was the best job in the world.

6. A love that grew with time

"The nicest thing a girl ever did for me was when a girl named Nancy married me and brought a warmth and joy to my life that has grown with each passing year."

Although Ronald and Nancy's relationship was amazing from the very beginning, it only got better with time, as he made abundantly clear in the above quote.

7. The secret to happiness is love

"Each day is different, and you get up, put one foot in front of the other, and go, and love; just love."

Life was not easy for Nancy and Ronald Reagan after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Through this painful period, she was able to remember her commitment to being by his side in sickness and in health.

8. A guy who knew just what to say

"What do you say about someone who’s always there with support and understanding, someone who makes sacrifices so that your life will be easier and more successful? Well, what you say is that you love that person and treasure her."

True love is about sacrifice, and the Reagans were constantly making huge sacrifices to ensure one another's well-being. They also made a point of expressing their gratitude whenever possible.

9. Love from beyond the grave

"I go to the library or work for the library all the time, because it’s Ronnie. I’m working for Ronnie."

Nancy remained committed to her husband and his presidential library long after he passed away.

10. Ronald and Nancy's greatest treasure

"We haven’t been careless with the treasure that is ours — namely what we are to each other."

Ronald wanted everybody to know that the greatest treasure was not his successful career or the fortune he amassed. Rather, his greatest treasure was his marriage.

GH star Kristina Wagner gets frank with Oprah about her divorce

In an episode of Oprah: Where Are They Now? on Saturday, the daytime star reminisced about being a part of an '80s soap-opera super couple, after the Luke and Laura storyline concluded.

“I do believe there is such a thing as chemistry. I don’t think it’s something you can create as an actor,” she said. “I do believe it’s something that happens or it doesn’t happen. It’s just a lucky situation that Jack and I were paired up and there was chemistry — on-camera and off-camera.”

The GH actress knew she couldn’t deny there was something between them even when the cameras stopped rolling.

"In being thrown together on-set in a romantic way, I think it was inevitable. I don’t think you could avoid it,” Wagner shared. “Jack’s fun. He’s an entertaining guy.”

The couple carried on a relationship behind the scenes and eventually went public with their love affair when she became pregnant with their son, Peter.

The duo married in 1993 and had a second son, Harrison, in 1995.

Their fairytale story didn’t have a happy ending after filing for divorce in 2001, only to reconcile for a few years. They eventually divorced in 2006. For Wagner, their final split was a personal game-changer for her.

“This was an awakening. I realized that I really needed to figure out what was going on with me in order to move forward. It’s easy to lose yourself when you are only in your young 20s," she explained. “You are just doing what is expected of you and not thinking about your own needs.”

While many people crumble under the emotional weight of a breakup, Wagner thrived.

“I think the divorce was the best thing that could have happened to me,” the mother-of-two said. “And for my children as well because I don’t think I was being a good mother at the time either. I wasn’t making good choices.”

While Wagner didn’t reveal the nature of her bad choices, she knows she emerged from the divorce as a stronger and healthier person.

“I had to deal with myself first,” she summed up. “We ultimately have to take care of ourselves before we help others.”

The exes are still good friends and they are currently starring together on the Hallmark Channel's show, When Calls The Heart.

If there’s one thing GH fans can’t deny, it's that the couple still has that sizzle every time they appear on-screen.

Jupiter in Virgo can be a mixed blessing. On one hand, it infuses you with a higher purpose that propels you forward into life. You feel like you've been singled out to serve the greater good. Jupiter leads you to take bigger risks and bolder gambles because you feel like the winds of fortune are at your back. But winds have been known to change as you'll discover on March 8, when the sun opposes Jupiter. This is when you'll see if you've been living in a bubble or if there truly is something to that invisible agency called Providence after all.

If you want to move on to a different job or seek employment elsewhere, then own that decision. It doesn't help to cite a negligent boss or uncaring client as being the reason for why you're making this unexpected move. Certainly they played a part, but vilifying them robs you of your choice and gives them too much power. It may feel like you're taking a step off the ledge — these types of life changes always do — but trust in the energies that are coursing through your horoscope. They are guiding you to the place where you need to be.

Savings and investments could be doing more for you if you'd only stop sitting on your assets. It's a terrific time to meet with an investor. Once Upon a Time's Robin Hood might not make it out of the Underworld

0
0

More: Once Upon a Time: Will going to the Underworld really save [spoiler]'s life?

In addition to the return of many familiar faces, introducing the terrifying Hades for the first time, and still having no clue of Hook's whereabouts, the episode presented something very worrisome. Ever since it was announced that OUAT would be heading to the Underworld, I'm sure many have suspected that someone might not return to Storybrooke.

If you recall, in the episode prior to the 100th, "Swan Song," after Emma told her friends and family she wanted to go to the Underworld to save Hook (by finding him and giving him half her heart), Charming said that in order to get Hook back someone would have to die.

Then, during "Souls of the Departed," upon a not-so-loving reunion between Peter Pan and Rumple, Peter told his son that he hates the Underworld and wants to come back to the land of the living. However, the only way he can do that is by trading places with a living soul. If that doesn't say foreshadowing, I don't know what does.

Robin Hood and Regina
Image: Tumblr

For some time now, Oncers have been worried for Robin Hood's fate. Apparently, there have also been rumors that Sean Maguire, the man behind Regina's one true love, is leaving the series. So, does that mean Peter will swap souls with Robin? Or, worse, Robin will be the one who dies in order to save Hook? TV Line asked Maguire about his alleged departure, and, of course, he didn't really give an outright answer.

"We’re going to the Underworld, so I don’t expect much good stuff is going to happen! But as to where it’s going to lead [for Robin], I can’t say," he said. "There are obstacles everywhere — a lot of bad people from the past are coming back and they are not too happy with our heroes. If Once Upon a Time was the Star Wars franchise, this would be Empire Strikes Back. It’s going to get dark, it’s going to be scary, and there will be surprises."

What the heck does that mean? Are dark times ahead for Robin? Here's hoping Robin doesn't get stuck behind in the Underworld and leave the series for good. Not only would I hate that for the character I adore so much, but let's also think about Regina.

Isn't Robin supposed to be her "soulmate"? She's already been through so much when it comes to love, not to mention she's worked extremely hard to become a better person. The last thing she deserves is to have something horrible happen to Robin. With that, Oncers, keep your fingers crossed that only good things are ahead for both Robin and Regina.

10 American cities you should definitely see in the spring

0
0

Not to mention, certain cities just have a certain je ne sais quoi in the spring — be it from weather and foliage to festivals and other fun annual affairs. So in planning your next spring excursion, put these American cities at the top of your travel list.

1. Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston
Image: Sean Pavone/Getty Images

In full disclosure, I live in Charleston... so I may be a bit partial. But coming from a local, let me assure you the springtime is one of the best times to make a pilgrimage to the Holy City. You can tour our centuries-old architecture, cobblestone streets, historic cemeteries and thriving restaurant scene without struggling to adjust to the heat and extreme humidity that plagues the summer months. Plus, springtime in Charleston is jam-packed with festivals, fairs and outdoor markets. Just ask a local to point you in the right direction — we're nothing if not friendly.

2. Kane County, Southwestern Utah

Utah

Located less than 90 minutes to three national parks — including the Grand Canyon — Kane County offers something for everyone in the springtime, and especially for outdoor enthusiasts. You can venture through narrow canyons, indulge your inner explorer at paleontological sites, marvel at polychrome cliffs and so much more. Aim for May, when Kane County's unique natural and cultural wonders are celebrated during the weeklong Amazing Earthfest.

3. Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C.

I'm a firm believer that everyone should travel to our nation's capital at some point in their lifetime, and what better time to do it than the spring? This time of year in D.C. is a true treat thanks to temperate weather and the glorious display of bright pink cherry blossoms dotting the scenery. Expect to spend a bit more if you travel to the area during the Cherry Blossom Festival, but don't let it deter you — you can easily recoup the cost by setting out on foot for the many free things to do.

4. San Diego, California

San Diego

My husband hails from San Diego, and to be honest, it's pretty lovely year-round. However, there are fewer school breaks between March and May, meaning a springtime trip will minimize crowds at family-friendly attractions like the beloved San Diego Zoo. Plus, if you wait until the weather warms up in the summer, you'll find yourself battling the influx of tourists wherever you go. I recommend hitting Torrey Pines State Reserve for a hike, soaking up the sun at Mission Beach, dining in the Gaslamp Quarter district and — oh! — don't miss Balboa Park.

5. Denver, Colorado

Denver
Image: moosebitedesign/Getty Images

In addition to the breathtaking backdrop of the majestic Rocky Mountains, Denver boasts plenty of sights to see, from the Denver Botanic Gardens to Red Rocks Park. Although the city is known for its unpredictable weather transitions, your best bet is the spring, when the temps are mild and the snow isn't so overwhelming. When you need a break from the great outdoors, head to Denver's bustling downtown, where you can take cover in the area's many restaurants, museums and art galleries.

6. New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans

Much like Charleston, New Orleans isn't just a top tourist destination in the South — it's a world-class travel destination, and rightly so. The city is a mesmerizing mix of culture, arts, food, entertainment and Southern hospitality. However, the humidity during the summer months can be stifling. Get to know New Orleans' inimitable French Quarter in the spring during the annual French Quarter Festival in April. Tip: No trip to New Orleans would be complete without a plate of beignets at Café Du Monde.

7. Point Pleasant, New Jersey

Point Pleasant, New Jersey

If you've never been to the Jersey Shore, don't let the stylized MTV version scare you off. Point Pleasant — which is located about 70 miles south of New York City — is a truly charming town. You can stroll down Jenkinson's Boardwalk and take in the beautiful beach vistas, or you can hop on one of the rides and partake of some classic boardwalk fare, like cotton candy. The summer months are a madhouse thanks to New Yorkers and Philadephians trying to escape the sweltering city temps, so plan your visit in the spring, when you can bogart the boardwalk.

8. Austin, Texas

Austin
Image: David Sucsy/Getty Images

Calling all music lovers! Austin is the destination for you. They don't call it the "Live Music Capital" for nothing, you know. But don't just visit to attend the world-famous South by Southwest (SXSW) in March — this eclectic city is full of life in the spring, from the annual Austin Fine Arts Festival to the Austin Food & Wine Festival, both in April. There's so much culture to enjoy that you'll want to carve out a few extra vacation days.

9. Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville
Image: George Rose/Contributor/Getty Images

I can't say enough good things about Asheville in the spring, but I'm admittedly partial — this lovely city has been our family's spring getaway for more years than I can remember. Make the trip, and you won't be disappointed! Start things off with a bang with a trip to the 8,000-acre Biltmore Estate, and mosey from there to the North Carolina Arboretum and Botanical Gardens to take in the seemingly endless rows of colorful blooms and blossoms sprouting up everywhere. Downtown Asheville is ideal for walking around, but if you're feeling adventurous, a quick car ride with take you to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where you can immerse yourself in outdoor activities like hiking and fishing.

10. Boston, Massachusetts

Boston
Image: Paul Marotta/Contributor/Getty Images

If you like to be in the middle of everything, a springtime trip to Boston might just be the ticket. The third Monday in April, which is known as Patriots' Day, kicks off a three-day weekend celebration including some of the most iconic events on the city's calendar — think the Boston Marathon, the return of Red Sox baseball and a reenactment of the opening battle of the American Revolutionary War held at Minute Man National Historical Park.

Why Downton Abbey's Edith's happy ending was long overdue

0
0

More: Why Downton Abbey's showdown between Edith and Mary needed to happen

Thankfully, the final episode of Downton mainly focused on Edith and what would become of her and Bertie. While visiting London and her Aunt Rosamund, Edith unexpectedly ran into Bertie. For once, Mary righted her wrong by notifying Bertie of Edith's whereabouts in hopes of reuniting the two. I guess you could say that Mary is somewhat responsible for her sister's happiness, but I'm sure eventually they would've found their way back to one another without any help.

Whatever the case, Bertie confessed he made a mistake by walking away from Edith. Yet again, he told her wanted to marry her and would wholeheartedly welcome Marigold into the family, despite the scandal or what his mother would think of it all. After some thought, Edith accepted his proposal. Of course, before tying the knot, Edith just couldn't walk down that aisle without confessing to Bertie's mother the truth about Marigold. She wouldn't be able to live with herself or marry Bertie without being honest.

To Edith's surprise, his mother accepted her. How could she not respect Edith for being so forthcoming about something so scandalous, especially when Edith knew there would a be chance she might be denied a prestigious title and the chance of marrying Bertie. In the end, Edith and Bertie finally said "I do." Can you believe it? Edith walked away from Downton extremely happy.

Violet Crawley
Image: Giphy

I want to thank Downton Abbey for giving the series finale to Edith. Yes, there was focus on other characters, but everything revolved around Edith. I don't know if this was the intention of the showrunners, but it almost seems that they rushed Mary and Henry's wedding in the penultimate episode so the series finale could be all about Edith. Either way, it was the right choice.

I've adored Edith since the beginning, but the sixth season made me even fall even more in love with her. Season 6 really was Edith's season. Despite being unlucky in love over the course of the series (that is until she met Bertie), Edith never let it affect her as a mother or as a working woman. It's been wonderful seeing her make a name for herself in the newspaper world and change the stigma of what a woman should be, especially during the 1920s.

Watching Edith build a future for herself professionally and ensuring Marigold would never be without, all while never forgetting to focus on herself personally, proves she is truly fantastic.

More: Downton Abbey's Lady Mary may never find happiness thanks to Matthew

Bertie and Edith
Image: Tumblr

Like Edith, pretty much every other character found their happy ending, too. Here's a brief summary.

Mary and Henry: Not only did they remain head over heels in love, but Mary became pregnant with their first child. Oh, and Henry even quit the race car driving business for good, but not due to Mary. It just wasn't the same for him after Charlie's death.

Robert and Cora: They walked away blissfully happy with their lives and knowing that their children were also happy. As Robert said, "What more could we ask?" Cora responded, "A long and happy life together just we two to watch the children grow. That's all I want." To which Robert replied, "Then, why not?"

Branson: He and Henry started their own automotive business. Oh, and it was also hinted that Branson and Edith's editor, Laura Edmunds, would have a future relationship.

Bates and Anna: Finally, these two found even more happiness with the birth of their baby boy. Unfortunately, his name remains a mystery.

Carson and Mrs. Hughes: Despite Carson having to walk away as butler, due to a debilitating illness in which his hands shake, Carson stayed at Downton in the role of elder statesmen. Oh, he and Mrs. Hughes also remain married and supportive of one another.

Violet and Isobel: Not only did Isobel realize she was very much in love with Lord Merton (sorry, Dr. Clarkson), but the two actually tied the knot. The final episode also dedicated wonderful scenes to Violet and Isobel's beautiful friendship.

Barrow: Despite leaving Downton for another job, he found his way back by taking over Carson's position. That's right, Barrow became the butler of Downton Abbey.

Baxter and Mr. Molesley: A future relationship was also suggested between Baxter and Molesley (duh), in addition to Molesley taking on a full-time teacher role at the school.

Daisy and Andy: After Daisy being horrible to Andy, she finally gave into her feelings for him. Who knows if they will last, but it appears they will pursue a romance.

Mrs. Patmore and Mr. Mason: It's been hinted at for a bit now, but the series finale most definitely suggested that Mrs. Patmore and Mr. Mason would have a future relationship. So I guess Daisy and Mrs. Patmore will forever be family, and I can't complain about that.

That's that. Thank you, Downton Abbey, for being such a huge part of so many fans' lives and bringing such joy. You will be missed.

Behold, the ultimate beauty packing list

0
0

Sometimes you're lucky and it's an item readily available at a local convenience store (hello, cheapo eyelash curler!), but other times, it's something you simply have to learn to live without for the duration of your travels.

And that's no fun, right? So before you haul your luggage out the door, feast your eyes on this ultimate beauty packing list.

More: 9 beauty products that will make you Instagram-ready

First and foremost, though, you'll need to check current travel regulations regarding liquid items if you're flying — no one likes being told they have to chuck a brand-new beauty product because the bottle is too big. Even if you're just taking a road trip, it's wise to consider transferring products to smaller size containers for maximum portability and to minimize product loss should you lose your luggage or suffer a spill.

Skin care

Once you've got your travel containers squared away, you'll want to make sure you bring the essentials needed to keep your skin healthy and dewy during your travels. Make sure to include any of these items you use on a regular basis:

  • Face wash
  • Face scrub
  • Toner
  • Anti-aging serum
  • Morning moisturizer
  • Makeup remover
  • Sunscreen
  • Cotton pads
  • Eye cream
  • Night cream

Makeup

I'm a bit of a minimalist when it comes to makeup while I travel, largely because I somehow always manage to make a huge mess of the makeup I bring — which is precisely why I recommend packing makeup in smaller bags (Ziploc snack bags work wonders). That way, everything you own doesn't end up in shimmer when your eye shadow compact apparently explodes in your bag.

More: My husband hates my makeup choices and I don't care

I also recommend packing your makeup kit as you're applying it. This way, you won't mentally skip a step and leave behind the primer that makes your pores miraculously small. Of course, everyone's makeup bag will look a little bit different, but grab any of these products that you use even a little bit regularly:

  • Primer
  • Foundation or tinted sunscreen
  • Concealer
  • Powder
  • Bronzer
  • Blush
  • Lipstick
  • Lip balm
  • Eyeliner
  • Eye shadow
  • Mascara
  • Highlighter and/or a contouring kit
  • Brow pencil
  • Brow powder
  • Brow gel
  • Tweezers (if allowed)
  • Spoolie

More: The ultimate pack hack to get a week's worth of outfits into one carry-on

Body

Especially if you are traveling by plane, you'll need to pack a beauty bag to help combat the dryness of stale cabin air. And, in general, everyone wants to glow on vacation, right? Include these items to make sure it happens:

  • Daily moisturizer
  • Body wash
  • Body scrub
  • Shaving gel or cream
  • Razor
  • Perfume

Hair

Are the odds good that if you forget to bring your hair products, the hotel you're visiting will have some handy? Sure, but there's no accounting for quality — those tiny bottles of off-brand shampoo and conditioner can turn the tamest hair into an unmanageable mess. Bring your own trusted brands of in-shower products, along with anything you use to style your hair after the shower. Consider these items:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Hair oil
  • Holding product like mousse or spray
  • Dry shampoo
  • Texturizing pomade
  • Bobby pins
  • Elastic bands

More: How shampoo can damage your hair and how to prevent it

Tools and accessories

Every woman knows that the right tools can make or break a beauty routine. Make sure you have these somewhere in your bag:

  • Eyelash curler
  • Hairbrush
  • Makeup brushes
  • Heated hair styling tools such as a dryer and flat iron

Extras

While there are several other helpful beauty items you could pack, there is at least one absolute that doesn't necessarily fit into the above categories: your toothbrush. Outside of that last essential, though, the rest of your ultimate beauty packing list is largely determined by personal preference. If your travels include logging lots of air time, toss in a rejuvenating serum or rosewater spritz so your skin doesn't look quite so parched upon arrival. For de-puffing eyes — and drinking, if you so desire — include a couple of chamomile tea bags. And it never hurts to have a fabulous bag so your beauty goods can travel in as much style as you do.

RHOP ladies make the worst vacation guests ever

More: Real Housewives goes international, but you can't watch

It was meant to be a lovely gesture — Ashley inviting the rest of the RHOP crew to her house in Delaware. On Sunday's new episode, the women descended on the youngest member of the cast's summer home, and it all seemed innocent enough at first, with some glaring and foreboding exceptions: On the ride down to the beach, Karen told Ashley that she was, under no circumstances, allowed to hang out with her daughter; and in another car, Katie got into it about her personal life with the other passengers, include Charrisse and Gizelle. But all that was just the beginning.

For a group of women who are obsessed with manners, all of the concern about etiquette flew out the window when they learned that they'd not only have to sleep in twin beds in shared rooms, but that some of them would have to share bathrooms. (Can you even imagine subjecting human beings to these conditions? The nerve!)

While some of the ladies tolerated the situation, others, like Gizelle, threw what might be classified as a hissy fit and spent a lot of time looking up hotels on their phones. While everyone ended up staying the night — and miraculously survived — the whole thing was a mess that made Ashley feel thoroughly horrible.

More: Real Housewives of New York star cleared

Ashley's made no secret of the fact that she has an agenda in making friends with the rest of the cast. She's definitely interested in social climbing, but not at the expense of trading in her personality. So far, we've seen her throw herself a cat-themed birthday party and invite the women to a whiskey-tasting party in a basement, which, for all intents and purposes, might have been a dungeon, as far as everyone else was concerned.

Inviting the women to her beach house was another generous gesture that failed, and it looks like Ashley's tolerance is starting to wear thin. While she, Katie and Robyn went surfing, Charrisse (who got super mad when her name was wrongly spelled on her place card, stating that she wasn't going to sleep there because the bed wasn't for her), Gizelle, and Karen lounged on the beach with champagne. In an interview, Ashley didn't hold back when she referred to them as "old."

According to the previews for next week's episode, the second half of the Delaware vacation doesn't seem to get much better. I'm just saying — if I was Ashley, I would probably never invite those folks anywhere again.

RHOA's Phaedra Parks runs out of excuses to tell her kids about Apollo Nida

Shockingly, Phaedra Parks has managed to avoid most of the drama that has dominated this season of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. This is especially surprising as, at the time of filming, she was dealing with a lot of bad publicity surrounding her divorce from her incarcerated ex-husband, Apollo Nida. That all changed this week, as Parks came under fire from viewers who criticized the way she told her children the truth about their father's current home behind bars.

It would be nearly impossible to completely hide the details of Nida's incarceration from her two sons, but Parks has seemingly done her best to make sure they know as little as possible. Parks claims that one of the major reasons why she hasn't brought her children to visit Nida is that she doesn't want them to be subjected to the prison system and think of it as a normal way of life. Her opinion that African American boys have it hard enough without being exposed to the workings of the American justice system is certainly valid. However, this seems to be a bit too convenient as an excuse. According to viewers, Parks has nobody but herself to blame for exposing her children to the world of incarceration.

Phaedra keeping secrets?

Phaedra keeping secrets?

This is by no means the first time one of the RHOA ladies has attempted to shield her kids from the harsh realities of life. Several weeks ago, Kim Fields did the same thing when she yanked her kids out of an important congressional meeting. This quick departure was in response to a comment about how "people do not like African American boys". However, while there are plenty of similarities between the two situations, Twitter users just aren't as sympathetic about Parks' plight.

Parks' critics seem to forget that her sons are very young and likely would have a hard time understanding the full scope of their dad's legal issues. However, by the time he leaves prison, they won't be so young anymore. Parks will eventually have to be a bit more forthright and, during tonight's episode, she took a big step in that direction.

The Walking Dead: All signs point to the survivors finally losing their humanity

More: Lauren Cohan nearly left The Walking Dead over this heinous moment in Season 3

Don't get me wrong; it's not as though the survivors haven't had to tread dodgy moral ground before. But, for the most part — for a band of wayfaring people trying to get by in the bleakest of times — they've managed to remain remarkably unscathed morally.

So much so, it's even been part of their codified initiation into the group — asking someone how many walkers they've killed versus how many non-walkers (aka regular people).

Those who have strayed too far from this moral high road haven't exactly fared well. When Carol made the decision during Season 4 to kill Karen and David in the prison under the guise of protecting the group, it got her (temporarily) banished. When Shane's questionable ethics started spiraling, well, we all know how that ultimately wound up.

Still, there's always been that lingering question as you watch Rick and the crew make their way in the zombpocalyse: will there come a point when the extreme choices they have to make don't include an option that is clearly morally sound? Can you survive in this world and keep your humanity intact indefinitely?

Tonight, we found out.

Last week, we saw Maggie barter a deal with the Hilltop Colony by which the Alexandria survivors would virtually exterminate Negan's cronies who have been terrorizing Hilltop. This was the first time we'd really seen the survivors cross the line in the sand from defensive fighting to straight-up assassination.

More: The Walking Dead: All the beloved character deaths so far

Sure, they've all killed a metric ton of walkers at this point. Most of the survivors haven't killed many people along the way though and, if they have, it's been in the heat of the moment or to save a life, whether it be theirs or someone else's.

Now we're wading into new waters. Tonight's episode forced the survivors to decide what they were willing to do — how far they were willing to go — to protect the civilization they were trying to build (or rebuild, in a sense) at Alexandria.

Is murder ever justifiable?

Such is the question everyone in Rick's camp is faced with when he and the gang return from Hilltop and unveil their plan to sneak into Negan's camp and slaughter a bunch of his "Saviors" in their sleep. Yikes.

Naturally, there is some resistance. It's no surprise that Morgan doesn't want to kill anyone — thanks to his hour-long story arc in the first half of the season, we understand his deep aversion to lethal force. Interestingly, despite her recent tumultuous history with Morgan, Carol seems to side with him. She's settled quite nicely into her domestic role in Alexandria (even sparking up a potential romance), so she's none-too-keen about traipsing off to kill a bunch of random strangers.

Most notably, Glenn and Heath had trouble coming to terms with the mission. Neither of them have actually taken a non-walker life up to this point, and the idea of doing so is clearly haunting them.

Given that Glenn has been the moral compass of the group for a solid stretch now, it was intriguing to see which side he'd land on after the deliberating was done. Would he be able to hold on to hope that one could reconcile living in this world with being an authentically good and pure person?

More: The Walking Dead: 6 reasons Glenn is the next major fatality

Sadly, it doesn't appear so. Is Glenn still a good person? Absolutely. He obviously struggles with what he has to do leading up to doing it and during the act. But I have to admit: watching him plunge a knife into the heads of two men who are asleep and totally unaware was hard to stomach.

Later, when he and Heath have to defend themselves using guns, the ensuing carnage is equally disturbing. While it's very likely that the people they mowed down were terrible, it tarnished our heroes ever so slightly.

Not to mention the mental and emotional aftermath they'll inevitably grapple with. As Morgan cautioned the group, "They come back when they're dead, too — I don't mean the walkers."

It raises an interesting dilemma. In this new world they're living in, who decides what is right and what is wrong? Survival is paramount and, so it would seem, morality comes in a distant second. Most pressingly, though, what cost will they ultimately pay for the decisions they make in the name of the "greater good"?

With Carol and Maggie currently being held hostage, we might just find out next week.

The Family theory: Fake Adam has a secret link to real Adam

0

And though there are plenty of questions to be answered in Season 1, the biggest is obviously if "returned" Adam is the real Adam.

More: The Family: Why Adam might not be who he says he is

My theory is that the answer is "no."

But just because the impostor Adam might not be the real Adam, doesn't mean fake Adam doesn't have good reason for being there.

He has clearly been through a lot. The detectives' investigation proves that the kid has at least experienced a trauma since he was right on about that basement with the view of the "dragons."

Perhaps the man who held him hostage also held the real Adam down there. And the two of them were assaulted and tortured together until Adam eventually died, while this impostor survived.

If this theory is correct, impostor Adam must have a really solid reason for pretending with the Warrens.

Maybe he doesn't have any family to go home to.

More: HTGAWM spoilers: New cast additions could hold the key to Annalise's past

Or maybe someone is offering him a chunk of change to pretend.

My guess is that impostor Adam is actually completely innocent, and it's really Willa and Claire who are the villains of this story.

They are clearly desperate to win this election to the point that they will even put the victory ahead of family.

Plus, we found out tonight that Willa already took Adam's old dental records before Danny could get to them. Is this because she's running her own test? Unlikely, since she and Claire have been so insistent that he's the "real" Adam, even though it's all so suspicious. Rather, I think she stole the records so no one would be able to investigate deeper into his past.

The series' sneak peek teaser, "But if you think you know where this story is going, you don't know this family," have me believing it's less about Adam and more about the dirt the Warrens are hiding.

Do you think the returned Adam is the real Adam or an impostor?

8 new Quantico storylines that are too confusing for their own good

0

Whoa, Quantico — what happened? The midseason return kicked off with a three-month time jump that left Agent Parrish (Priyanka Chopra) completely on her own against the tide of public opinion, FBI agents and congressional hearing members convinced that the twin bomb blasts which devastated NY and the FBI were the work of one sole ex-FBI agent.

More: Quantico's clues that prove the FBI is behind the terrorist attack

Of course, we know better than everyone else on the show that Parrish is right and not just too bereaved to think clearly... right? In the meantime, the return episode introduced a lot of new subplots and twists that kind of left us scratching our heads.

Quantico - WTF

Quantico - WTF

1. Why doesn't anyone believe Parrish?

At every turn, Parrish has proven herself to be right, and yet still no one believes her. Instead of rallying around her, everyone — including Booth — has turned their back on her. So now all of the friendships she had built up over the course of her fugitive investigation are on the rocks again. Even more confusing is that, once Parrish tells the congressional committee that she no longer believes there was a second terrorist, her "friends" get even more upset with her.

2. Simon's meltdown

Quantico - Simon's Meltdown

Quantico - Simon's Meltdown

What happened to Simon? Sure, the mid-season finale left him the victim of a terrorist kidnapping... and sure, he woke up clutching the remote control to the bomb that blew up 32 FBI agents — but wouldn't that make him more determined to get to the truth instead of laying all the blame on Elias like a patsy? Also, has everyone forgotten that is was Simon's weird fantasy bomb plot that set this whole thing in motion in the first place?

3. New cast members

Quantico - new cast members

Quantico - new cast members

Who are these new NATs and will we grow to care about them or are they just a distraction? It feels weird to suddenly see new faces causing all kinds of frustration for our original cast members. But even weirder is the fact that they're supposedly the "upper" classmen, and yet Shaw combines both groups of trainees — even making them room together — for reasons completely unknown.

4. Shaw's son and the twins

The kidnapping of Shaw's delinquent son, Charlie, has been cropping up all season. But why are Nimah and Raina suddenly getting involved? And what does it mean that Nimah contacts Charlie's kidnappers? Is this how they get involved with the terrorist cell they eventually infiltrated at mid-season end?

We have to admit though, the scene between Nimah and Charlie commiserating about racism in America felt particularly relevant.

Quantico - relevant

5. Shelby's non-sister

So now Caleb and Shelby (who's no longer working with the FBI) are going to do an off-the-books investigation into what happened to Shelby's fake sister? OK... except, why and how and really? So another pair of agents are going to head off in a completely different direction, proving that the rest of the season really is going to be very different from the first.

More: The Walking Dead: All signs point to the survivors finally losing their humanity

6. Who's blackmailing Parrish?

We still don't know why Parrish has been at the center of the terrorist's plans. The most likely theory is that it has something to do with O'Connor and her ex-FBI agent father, but that's just conjecture. It's all so personal and yet still too vague. And now, at the end of tonight's episode, Parrish gets a creepy Scream-esque phone call that draws her out into the dark to find a fellow agent wearing a bomb...

7. The bomber is changing style

Anabelle Acosta in Quantico
Image: Phillipe Bosse/ABC

We admit, Vasquez isn't our favorite NAT, but she has come through for Parrish more than once and doesn't deserve to get blown up. But there she is, at the end of the episode, wearing a bomb vest and looking only mildly concerned about it. Is she somehow connected to the terrorist, or is she just too cool to freak out like a normal person? Either way, it looks like the bomber is changing tactics and it's super confusing. Why go from blowing up buildings to using individual bomb vests?

8. We still don't know who died

At the end of the episode, the only confirmed death from the mid-season finale's bomb blast is Clayton Haas, Caleb's dad. We know that Shelby was there when he died, and that she's got serious survivor's guilt but, other than that, there were no further confirmations of who was lost.

Even with all of tonight's plot twists, we have to admit that the show has us super curious about what will happen next. And that's probably exactly what the show's creators want.
