3 double standards that make me believe in feminism

More: Women answer, Do you consider yourself a feminist?

The dating double standard

Men who never marry would be seen as cursed if they were women. Unmarried women are seen as old maids and spinsters. Instead of pitying guys who are still very single, they are celebrated. This type of man is seen as untrappable — a great catch — whereas a woman who is equally accomplished and successful in her life is left out of the dating scene altogether because men as we know them are highly afraid of these types of women. So they go for a girl who looks like Barbie, which makes the women who are left out even more productive, which in turn makes them more intimidating.

More: 11 reasons my dog is better than a boyfriend

It's OK for an older guy to date a younger woman, but when an older woman dates a younger guy, she is called a cougar.

Older women look more appealing to younger guys for a variety of reasons. Older women will not play love games and know exactly what they want. Some of them may not want the family and all that goes with the picket fence, but as a woman's biological clock ticks even louder, that idea may change. Younger men often find older women more interesting, experimental, fun to talk to, financially settled and more adept sexually. As one guy in his 20s told me, "I guess it could be nice to not hang around a ditz with no knowledge of life, music or something like that."

Age doesn't always determine maturity. There are men in their 20s who can give any guy in his 40s a run for his money. Maturity has nothing to do with age, but it is the actions and behaviors that you display in adverse situations that do. So, where does the term cougar come from? Well, the word conjures up images of a stealth hunter on the prowl for her next easy prey. It sounds empowering, but in reality the media has tainted us with the concept. The only thing a secure, established woman can control is her own life.

Most of the term's popularity stems from a 2001 book by Valerie Gibson called Cougar: A Guide for Older Women Dating Younger Men, which I'll admit I never read. But when the word cougar is used, it makes me want to gag. Why can't a woman just date whomever she wants, no questions asked? Why can't a woman in her 40s be attracted to a man in his 20s or 30s? Men don't seem to have a problem with this situation when it's reversed.

The restroom double standard

This one is behind the common joke, “Why do girls travel in packs when they go to the restroom?” This gets less funny when you realize that it's because women have had it etched and engraved into their minds that all girlfriends need to stick together because the bigger group we are in, the smaller the chances are of being harassed, abducted or abused by men in public. It's not that we can't pee alone, that we are sharing makeup tips or even chatting about the latest gossip. Hey, if only people actually sat back and thought about the real reason.

You don't hear any jokes about why some guys go to the bathroom at the same time.

The wage double standard

Then of course, there's the huge double standard that female full-time workers make only 77 cents for every dollar earned by men — a gender wage gap of 23 percent. This is unacceptable! Women should be getting paid the same amount as men do for doing the exact same job!

Feminism isn't a bad word. Trust me, I can come up with some doozies. What's bad is the fact that men hear the word and go on the attack, forcing women to defend themselves. Not all women bash men. But maybe men need to understand that if I want to date a younger guy, I will. If I want to be single, I will. If I wait to make the same salary as a man, then I will. I just want men to understand that me being a woman shouldn't mean I can't do the same things that they can.

I'm tired of hearing people use the word equality and then treat women differently than men. If we want to be equal, we need to be treated as such.

Klaus vs. Alaric vs. Stefan: Who should Caroline end up with on TVD?

More: The Vampire Diaries boss stuns fans with unexpected Klaroline remark

Sure, three years down the line we've seen blips of Caroline engaged to Alaric and raising his twin daughters as her own.

But now it's clear that engagement might just be for show and protection more than actual love.

Because Caroline and her family are heading to New Orleans in the future "to visit Mommy's friend." And who else could Mommy's friend be expect one brooding Original vampire who told Caroline he was her endgame. Cue the Klaroline cheers!

Of course, just because Caroline is going to visit Klaus doesn't mean they are reuniting in the love sense. More than likely, Caroline and Alaric are looking for help from the Original vampires with their Rayna problems.

Not only does Caroline's family in the future complicate her everlasting love with Klaus, but Stefan is also still very much in the picture in her present. And though it seems that they ended things on a seriously rough note, that doesn't mean all hope is lost for a reconciliation at some point.

SheKnows ran a poll last night during the show to get fans' thoughts on who was Caroline's actual endgame and the results were definitely heated.

Klaus did win by a pretty good margin, but that doesn't mean Steroline fans didn't make a valiant showing to cheer on their ship.

Poor Alaric was left in the dust and pretty much forgotten. Which is why I can't help but think that there is more to the Caroline/Alaric relationship than love. It seems like such an odd pairing, and I understand that they are raising their daughters together, but could their engagement be more of a sham than we know? Perhaps there's a deeper reason — maybe for their daughters' safety? — that these two needed to put on a united front.

More: Did [SPOILER]'s death on The Originals pave the way for a Klaroline reunion?

Obviously, we all know at this point that I'm biased. Klaroline all the way! But I also understand that their respective shows are making a reunion a bit complicated, to say the least. Still, I absolutely appreciate the writers' efforts to tease the fact that they haven't forgotten about our love of their relationship, even though Klaus has moved on to a new series.

Why do you think Caroline is visiting New Orleans in the future?

SwanLuv backs out on promise to provide free money for engaged couples

$

And it turns out, it was.

SwanLuv gained a lot of publicity in late 2015 when the founder said they'd give out the loans starting in February 2016. Well, now it's February — and couples that applied to be first in line for the free wedding cash are feeling duped after the company pivoted from free money to a crowdfunding platform.

More: Couple celebrates wedding by taking photos at KFC

“Due to overwhelming demand (nearly two billion dollars at $10,000 per couple) and unanticipated legal regulations/restrictions in the lending space, rather than pull out we came up with a tool we believe still helps couples with their wedding financing... We sincerely apologize to anyone we have upset by adjusting our funding platform," CEO Scott Avy wrote on Facebook.

This isn't going over well with those who hoped to finance their nuptials with the promised loans.

“I was crushed,” Louisiana bride-to-be Keyanna told Yahoo Finance. “We were really looking forward to the chance of having money going toward our wedding."

More: Couple who met on Instagram marries minutes after meeting in person

Brandi Kinney of Las Cruces, New Mexico, was also disappointed because she wanted to use the money so her terminally ill mother could see her get married. “A wish of hers was to see us get married, but we don't really have a lot of money, nor do we have people in our lives who can provide us with a lot of money,” Kinney told Yahoo. The mother of two — including an autistic child — is currently 24 and a student. She and her fiancé live off a stipend she receives from a scholarship.

We've all heard that there's no such thing as a free lunch, but Avy received a ton of publicity for claiming SwanLuv was really going to give out the money. The skeptic in me wonders if that was the plan all along — crowdfunding platforms are pretty commonplace now, so a new one wouldn't make much noise in the media. But SwanLuv got a ton of attention — and web traffic — from the publicity, which helped it get name recognition and high ranks in Google.

Will SwanLuv find success as a raise-money platform? We'll see, but Kinney won't be participating.

"We didn’t raise a penny and it was a nightmare,” she told Yahoo of a previous attempt at raising money on GoFundMe. “They said it was trashy and that my my fiancé was less of a man because he couldn’t provide a wedding for his future family."

Self-proclaimed pickup artists are using this message on Tinder en masse

I don't remember the exact wording, but the guy said something like "women won't respect you if you treat them nicely and take them out to dinner... they'll think you're weak and not worth sleeping with."

More: Tindog is a dating app for dog lovers that will help you find true love

I quickly deleted the message after I picked myself off the floor from laughing, but it made me sad (and really, really worried) that more and more men are listening to this advice found on websites and on Reddit (just look at the subreddit TheRedPill and try not to freak out — it's impossible).

But while practices like negging — where guys insult you because it's supposed to make you interested — are pretty obvious, other tactics are more subtle and attempt to flatter you onto your back.

One great example: The brains behind Feminist_Tinder recently unearthed a message that many self-proclaimed pickup artists are using:

Tinder opener

Tinder opener

"Hey, I know this is kinda weird and pushy haha, but would you like to have sex with me? I’m not a creep or a pervert, just a genuine guy. I would treat you with respect and the sex would be good. I can even make you squirt if the connection is right haha. I will not judge you or think you’re 'easy.' So yeah, excuse me if I come across as a little uncalibrated but I think you’re attractive, so what do you think? :) Haha."

More: Binder, the app that helps you break up, is now available

According to BuzzFeed, the message originated from YouTube pickup artist Maximilian Berger. In his video "How to F*** Girls on Tinder," Berger explains how he scores with women in different cities by using the message, which he calls the "apocalypse opener."

He shows screenshots from a Tinder conversation that "proves" it works because the woman ended up giving her number. There are conflicting reports on its effectiveness in the wild, but hopefully this will go away for good now that it's received so much publicity.

And if you are on the receiving end of the "apocalypse opener" and aren't into it? Hit that report button, because accounts are getting banned for using it. Just view it as a service to other women.

Pop-up wedding company PopBliss is holding its "first ever" luxury wedding in New York City at the end of March. The event promises a luxury wedding and "lust-worthy Instagram-worthy photos to remember the day forever."

More: SwanLuv backs out on promise to provide free money for engaged couples

If you're one of the 10 lucky couples selected, you'll have to pay $5,000 but you and your guests will get a welcome party, "bliss" brunch, glam suite and a pop-up wedding. The wedding with also be live-streamed to an additional 300 guests.

"In true pop-up style, the location, vendors, décor, food and all other details are wonderful, whimsical and unique — surprising the couples with the best wedding money can buy without the hefty price tag," the company said in a statement.

More: Sniff your way to a love connection with this weird new dating service

Translated, this means you'll get a destination wedding for next-to-no money, but you won't get any say in the planning. This sounds like a dream to me because I hate planning things, but it might be anxiety-inducing to others who like having a say over everything.

The PopBliss team is hoping that this type of event — planned in conjunction with wedding expert Racquel Kristi — will become "the next big thing in bridal." Interested? Sign up on the PopBliss website. But, act fast: The pop-up nuptials are planned for March 30 and 31, 2016.

Slow Cooker Sunday: Shortcut salsa verde chicken with just five ingredients

Chunky green salsa verde and sour cream are the base for these fall-off-the-bone slow cooker drumsticks. By happy accident, I chose drumsticks because it was all my butcher had at the time, and they turned out so juicy and tender. No boring white meat here, but if you'd rather, you can substitute with breasts or thighs.

Serve this chicken on a bed of Mexican rice for a flavorful dinner that takes minimal effort.

5-ingredient slow cooker salsa verde drumsticks recipe

Serves 4 – 6

Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 6 hours | Total time: 6 hours 10 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds chicken drumsticks
  • 2 (16-ounce) jars salsa verde
  • 1-1/2 cups sour cream
  • 1 small handful fresh cilantro, plus more for garnish
  • 1 envelope taco seasoning

Directions:

  1. To the bowl of the slow cooker, add the chicken drumsticks.
  2. To a blender, add the remaining ingredients. Blend on high until the mixture is very smooth and creamy.
  3. Pour the mixture on top of the chicken, and place the lid on the slow cooker. Set the cooker to cook on low for 6 hours (or on high for 4 hours).
  4. Once the chicken is done cooking, transfer it to a baking dish, and broil for 5 minutes to give the chicken a crisp, golden exterior. (This step is optional but makes the dish look really appetizing.)
  5. Garnish the chicken with fresh cilantro, and serve warm over Mexican rice alongside vegetables or any other side dish desired.

Why you shouldn't give up on your fitness goals

More: How I'm making my travel dreams come true

Real-life challenges

For me, it was running. When I had two unexpected breast surgeries followed by another necessary surgery that didn’t turn out as expected, I lost my fitness. Not only that, I couldn’t get it back.

Despite how hard I tried, I couldn’t regain my endurance. When I got on the elliptical, I sweated out 200 calories, not the 350 minimum I’d easily completed before. Instead of seven hours hiking, I pushed hard to walk two or three miles. Running? Ha, a distant dream.

Up 10 pounds, no matter how I dieted, I wondered if I’d need to settle for this new, more rounded body and this decreased level of fitness. Was this really all I could do?

So on a sunny day last month, as I walked and thought, I remember running, I suddenly wondered, Could I jog/run for a minute? Just a minute?

I wasn’t sure, but I tried — and there it was, the ability to jog for a minute. I fixed my eyes on a shadow farther up the path and tried for it. And then thought, Could I make it to that bend in the path? Yes!

Six minutes. Not the jock I once was but once again a woman who could run.

More: Why you should be your own Valentine this year

Why should this be important to you?

When you settle, you stop trying. When you don’t try, you cheat yourself. Instead of saving yourself from the disappointment of trying without success, you sentence yourself to true disappointment in yourself, because you’ve given up.

Your life narrows from what it could be to what you let it be. Six months from now, will you wish you’d trusted in yourself, settled less often and taken more chances?

Four secrets for starting:

  1. Stop the excuses: When we tell ourselves, “It’s not so bad the way things are,” we forget that the real risk lies in things staying the same. When we stagnate, our lives grow smaller rather than larger.

  2. Just start: Do you not begin something because you hesitate? Hesitation amplifies worry. If you stall, will you ever start? Possibly not. Is it fear that stops you? Fear erodes confidence. If you allow fear to take over your brain, it owns you.

How do you start? You just start. In Beating the Workplace Bully, I wrote, “Think what a brave person would do, and become that brave person.” Don’t tell yourself you lack courage — grow your courage by thinking your way through fear.

  3. Create achievable goals or action steps: If you want to start your own business but can’t quit your day job because you need the income and insurance, set a smaller, more realistic goal. How about creating a small sideline business on the Internet? You could do that and get your entrepreneurial sea legs even as you keep your day job.

If you want to lose weight or gain fitness, create action steps. For the first, perhaps it’s renting three exercise videos from the library. For your second step, work out to each of the three videos. For your third, select the video you enjoy most, buy it and work out three days a week for the next month. You’re on your way.

  4. Enjoy the process: Once you start, you develop your strength, talents and discover new things about yourself. You stretch, grow and move toward your dream.

So, what have you decided you can’t do or have? Stop your excuses, set a realistic goal, create an action step and start. You’re the author of your life. Don’t give up on yourself.

19 Ferret facts that will either freak you out or make you want to get one

$
0
0

Unfortunately, they're not as simple as you might think. In fact, there's a lot you probably don't know about those funny, adorable little creatures. Consider these facts before deciding whether or not a ferret is the perfect pet for you.

1. Their name says it all

The scientific name for ferrets is Mustella putorius furo, which basically translates to "stinky weasel thief." That tells you some pretty important info about this critter.

ferret-dance

ferret-dance

2. They are not rodents

They might look a lot like rats and hamsters, but ferrets are actually members of the mink family, closely related to the weasel. And they're ridiculously cute.

ferret-rodent

3. They sleep a lot

Ferrets are sleepy creatures, sometimes snoozing up to 20 hours a day.

ferret-yawn

More: 8 Facts you didn't know about hamsters

4. And they sleep hard

Sometimes they slip into a deep sleep, often called a dead sleep, that they just can't be woken up from. You can shake them, pinch them or thump them on the chest, and they just don't budge. Inexperienced owners panic, thinking their precious pet has passed away, only to have it open its eyes and look around like nothing happened.

ferret-sleep

5. They need their space (and some of yours)

It could be all that sleep they get but when ferrets finally wake up, they need to run and play. Ferret owners need to be able to share their space with their pets. They need 3-4 hours of supervised playtime each day, and without it, they may start to act out. But who wouldn't want to play with these furry critters for a few hours a day?

ferret-bounce

ferret-bounce

6. They stink

Ferrets have a musky smell that can be very offensive to some yet is tolerable to others. Having your ferret spayed or neutered may cut down on the smell, but it won't eliminate it completely.

7. They will take your stuff

And you might not get it back. Stealing and hoarding items is part of a ferret's nesting instinct. There's not much you can do to deter this behavior, so it's best to learn its hiding spots for the next time you can't find your keys.

ferret-steal

8. Breeding ferrets is nasty business

When a male ferret is ready to breed, he becomes violent and often takes it out on the female. Males have been known to drag females around and bite them enough to cause bleeding, all during the mating process. They can also be violent toward other males and humans during this time, making them less than the ideal pet when they come into heat.

mean-ferret

mean-ferret

9. Females can actually die from not mating

Seriously. Dying from a lack of sex is an actual thing. Female ferrets reach sexual maturity at 4-6 months of age. Once they go into heat, they stay that way indefinitely until they breed. Over time, prolonged high doses of estrogen lead to aplastic anemia — a serious condition that can lead to death. Luckily, a veterinarian can help bring a ferret out of heat if breeding doesn't happen.

ferret-dying

ferret-dying

10. They're usually "fixed" when you buy them

Now that you know all the problems associated with breeding ferrets, you shouldn't be surprised to learn that most ferrets you buy, either through a pet store or a breeder, have often been spayed or neutered before the adoption process.

ferret-fixed

11. Ferret babies are so tiny

In fact, a newborn ferret can fit inside a teaspoon. So adorable.

ferret-baby

12. They can get almost anywhere

They may appear wide, but most of that is just fluff. Ferrets can squeeze into any opening that's just over an inch wide.

ferret-escape

13. They spread the flu

Keep your distance from your ferret when you're under the weather. Ferrets can not only spread around human influenza, they can catch it, too. Symptoms are pretty much the same as when people get the flu, and they're treated with antibiotics and decongestants.

ferret-sick

ferret-sick

14. They're not great with (human) babies

Ferrets do not like to be handled roughly or restrained, and since small children don't usually know the proper way to handle the critter, they may end up being bitten.

ferret-bite

ferret-bite

15. They need their shots

Just like cats and dogs, ferrets need to stay on a regular vaccination schedule to avoid serious, contagious diseases.

ferret-shots

16. They're all business

Or at least someone thought they were. A group of ferrets is referred to as a business of ferrets.

ferret-party

ferret-party

17. They overheat

Ferrets do not sweat, and for that reason they do not tolerate heat well. Heatstroke is a very real and possible deadly threat to these cold-loving creatures. To reduce risk, ferrets should never be exposed to temperatures above 80 degrees.

ferret-hot

18. They can be litter trained

It takes some time and effort, but ferrets can be trained to use a litter box. Easier cleanup for you.

ferret-litter

19. It may be illegal to own them

You may think they're cute and cuddly but in some places, they are considered pests or wild animals — and completely banned. The only statewide bans on ferrets are in California, Hawaii and the District of Columbia. There are also bans in New York City, Salt Lake City and other, smaller locations.

6 tips to read tarot cards without any experience

More: How to ask the right questions for tarot readings

1. Acknowledge you are a born storyteller

Guess what? Every single one of us tells stories — all the time. You needn’t be a published author. We tell ourselves internal stories all day long. If I asked you to describe your day, you could do it. If I asked you to tell me about your childhood, you could do it. If I showed you an editorial spread in a high-fashion magazine and asked you to tell a story of the photos, you could. If I placed a tarot card in front of you and asked you to tell me the story of what you see, you could do it… but only if you released the fear of getting it wrong.

2. Don’t be afraid to get it “wrong”

Fear of getting tarot meanings wrong is the number one biggest impediment of all potential readers. Nothing throws up a wall like fear. Are tarot meanings steeped in hundreds of years of esoteric theory and a rich structured meaning? Yes. Do you have to know this rich history and memorize all these meanings to draw insight from the cards? Nope, not at all.

3. Trust what you see

Tarot’s power lies in its fine, bonelike structure and how it reflects the human psyche. Standard meanings exist, but you don't have to worry about them at first. Tarot's power also lies in the abstract nature of its symbols. In abstraction, all meanings hold importance. If something strikes a chord in you, then it has meaning for you. This is your golden ticket — this is your message.

Start with a single card. Shuffle and draw randomly. Take a breath. Allow the images to wash over you. Which part of the card catches your attention? Is it a crown? A handsome man on a horse? Is it a golden chalice or a soft furry lion?

More: 5 ways to stretch your intuition muscles

4. Find your meaning

Once an item or action in the card has caught your attention, figure out what it means to you. Is a rainbow capturing your attention? Decide how you feel about rainbows. Is it a figure lost in work? What does your work mean to you? Are two people looking at each other lovingly? What does romantic love mean to you at the moment?

5. Tell the story

Once you’ve deciphered a meaning, reflect it back to yourself in the form of a story. If the rainbow caught your eye, your story or “message” might be, “I need to look for the beauty in my day.” If you are struggling at work you love — the figure working hard — your message might be, “I need to keep doing the work I love. It will lead to great things.” If romantic lovers appear, your message might be, “Spread the love to invoke love.”

6. Begin your journey

Take a leap of faith, listen to your inner voice, and you’ll be shocked at how quickly you will feel confident with the cards. Who knows where they will take you? Tarot has been used for divination and advice for hundreds of years, and it's more popular than ever. It just might change your life — it sure changed mine. Good luck!

ARIES (March 19 - April 18)

You may not see yourself as a role model, but you are. Your unique blend of straight shooter, coach and go-to gal makes you someone that people want to emulate. You won’t give up when the going gets tough and you have an easygoing way of keeping your cool when everyone else is losing theirs. It’s important to understand that the traits you take for granted about yourself are highly valued by those around you. You may never believe in yourself in the way that you should, but believing that others believe in you might be the next best thing.

You’re not getting it. This is nothing new. You often take longer than most to recognize the merits in a different way of thinking. And this isn’t because you’re thickheaded and stubborn. You happen to believe that if something isn’t broken then it shouldn’t be fixed, and right now it sounds like certain people want to mess around with your established way of doing things. This could pertain to a business model, a health regimen or switching smartphones. Take a deep breath on Feb. 26 and ask them to explain again. You have all the time in the world.

You have to start getting pickier about those golden apples that keep rolling across your path because chasing after each and every one of them only leads to an armload of rotten fruit in the end. Identifying and then prioritizing your opportunities is the key to keeping them fresh and crisp, which is what the Mercury/Saturn sextile this week is all about. Yes, you will have to leave a few shiny objects right where you found them (never easy), but this will clear your mind so that you invest less energy in what could be and more energy in what is.

It’s hard to tell if a new player at work will help or hinder a project you have in the pipeline. She seems to be asking a lot of leading questions and poking around in places that you feel are better left alone. You’ll want to get protective, but don’t. Getting territorial won’t help you now and could even hurt. Go ahead and smile sweetly because she’s in a position to halt or even reverse the recent progress you’ve made. As it is, she’ll want some kind of credit for her input, so find something to praise on the 25th.

Once again you find yourself being saddled with making the decision that nobody wants to make. Co-workers have passed the buck for so long that it’s beginning to cost the company, which is why you must take action on Feb. 26. Yet it’s also an action that will prove unpopular and that you may be vilified for. Perhaps it’s time to tell people how painful this is and how much you resent being put in this position. It doesn’t hurt to show your human side during times like this. It pricks people’s conscious and inspires them to be more sensitive.

Answers that don’t come easily can teach us to reach outside our repertoire of quick fix solutions. It appears as if you’ve been grappling with a certain problem (maybe it’s a project) for weeks and it has thwarted your best efforts. Well-meaning friends have encouraged you to move on, but that’s no way to talk to a Virgo. This only increases your motivation to get to the bottom of things or to master your situation. Thank heavens that a propitious Mercury/Saturn sextile on Feb. 25 shows you discovering the missing piece that promises to unlock the entire puzzle for you.

Perhaps you’ve been waiting for opportunity to come knocking when it should be the other way around? Aquarians are astrology’s great communicators. Endeavoring to understand the other person’s point of view is very important for you. It’s so important that you will help people to articulate what they want to say — even if the views they are trying to express are ideologically opposed to your own. This stems from the belief that feelings and thoughts should be totally transparent and if people are meant to be together — whether it’s in love or at work — then they will naturally find their fit. ARIES (March 19 - April 18)

You are undergoing a tricky period when unconscious aspects of yourself are being reflected in the actions and attitudes of others. This explains why you're experiencing such intense likes and dislikes toward the people in your life. If anything, these will be exaggerated to make the point abundantly clear. Think of it as being locked inside a house of mirrors for a week. But instead of becoming accusatory and defensive, you can use this time constructively to take back those attributes you're projecting and to own them. This will make you the master of your mind, heart, body and soul.

Why Downton Abbey's showdown between Edith and Mary needed to happen

More: Downton Abbey's Lady Mary may never find happiness thanks to Matthew

Just what moment am I referring to? The Crawley sisters had it out, and the fight was everything I imagined and hoped it would be. Like Edith said, "We had the row we all knew was coming." Isn't that the truth? Despite the unfortunate circumstances that caused it (more on that in a bit), the argument was glorious, especially seeing Edith ream out Mary. Now, let's get to it.

The catalyst

Before I get to their fight, let me explain what caused it in the first place. Ever since ending things with Henry Talbot, Mary's been quite bitter. Obviously, Mary is in pain, because she is in love with Henry and just can't admit that she's terrified of being with someone who could easily die in a car accident like Matthew — and rightfully so. I really do feel for Mary here. But, when Mary is unhappy, that means she has to make everyone else around her miserable, including the one person she's picked on her entire life — Edith.

If it wasn't bad enough that Mary was trying to stomach the thought of living without Henry, she soon learned that if Edith and Bertie Pelham married, her sister would outrank her entire family by marrying the new Marquess of Hexham. Well, that's exactly what may happen, especially since the current Marquess (Bertie's cousin) died, leaving Bertie to inherit everything. As Lord Grantham excitedly declared, "Golly gumdrops!" I couldn't have said it better myself.

Lady Mary
Image: Tumblr

In typical Mary fashion, she was in denial over the whole thing (jealous much, Mary?), which led to her officially crossing the line with Edith. Even Edith was trying to respect Mary's heart by waiting to tell her that she and Bertie were going to marry, but that didn't stop Mary. As Edith said, "The one thing that Mary can't bear is when things are going better for me than for her." She added, "I'm getting married and you've lost your man and you just can't stand it."

The break up

For some time now, Edith has gone and back forth over whether she should tell Bertie the truth about Marigold. Well, all of that came to a head. Rather than letting Edith tell her secret in her own time, Mary basically told Bertie and pushed Edith into admitting it out loud. Obviously, this didn't go over well with Bertie and led to him breaking up with Edith. Just when Edith is on the verge of blissful happiness, it's snatched from her in a matter of seconds.

As Bertie told Edith, she wasn't fair in not trusting him and he can't spend his life with someone who not only he doesn't trust, but who doesn't trust him. It's hard to find fault with Bertie here, but did anyone else want to shake him and tell him to just forget all of it?

More: Downton Abbey's Carson is officially the most infuriating character ever

The cowardly moment

Like Edith, Branson was more than angry with Mary. She tried to justify her actions, but Branson told her to forget the "I'm so innocent" act. I'll let Branson's words do the talking. He said, "You can't stop ruining things. For Edith. For yourself. You'd pull in the sky if you could. Anything to make you feel less frightened and alone. How many lives are you going to wreck just to smother your own misery? You're a coward, Mary. Like all bullies, you're a coward."

The fight

Eventually, Mary mustered enough courage to go see Edith. Of course, she tried to apologize, but Edith wasn't having her crap of an apology. Not only did Edith tell Mary to "just shut up," but she also called her a bitch. Finally, Edith let Mary have what was coming to her for a very long time. Over the course of the series, Mary has treated Edith like dirt on the bottom of her shoe. It all bubbled over to this very moment. Thank goodness Edith stood up to Mary, because it was a long time coming and Mary needed to be put in her place once and for all.

Lady Edith

Edith ended up leaving and heading off to London, because, well, can you blame her? But before she departed, she so effortlessly told Mary, "And you're wrong, you know, as you so often are. Henry's perfect for you. You're just too stupid and stuck up to see it. Still, at least he's gotten away from you, which is something to give thanks for, I suppose."

The guilt

While Mary and Edith were having it out, sadly, Thomas tried to kill himself by cutting his wrists. Thankfully, Baxter, Mrs. Hughes and Andy were able to get to him in time. After learning about Thomas' suicide attempt, Mary's guilt set in about Edith. So much so, she even said to Lord Grantham, "Do you still think dismissing Mr. Barrow is a useful saving, papa?" To which he replied, "That's rather below the belt, even for you."

More: Downton Abbey's Anna and Bates finally find some peace, but will it last?

The sisterly bond

To make a long story short, Branson called upon Violet to come home to London and talk some sense into Mary about marrying Henry. Well, she did, and the two tied the knot. That's right, Mary got her happiness, while Edith's was destroyed. Yeah, that sounds about right.

Anyways, Edith came home to see her sister get married. The two had a heart-to-heart, where Mary gave an actual apology. Once again, Edith was on point and said, "I assumed you'd be fairly sorry, unless you're actually insane." Edith admitted that even though Mary is sorry and being nice to Edith because she is so happy, she probably won't be nice to her forever, because that's just who Mary is.

Then Mary asked the question most fans were wondering: Why did Edith come back? As Edith said, "Because, in the end, you're my sister. One day, only we will remember Sybil, or mama, or papa, or Matthew, or Michael, or granny, or Carson, or any of the others who have peopled our youth, until at last our shared memories will mean more than our mutual dislike."

Edith, you will forever be above Mary in so many ways. Here's hoping she finds some happiness in the series finale, because she so deserves it. Lord Grantham said that Edith is filled with surprises, and he's certain they haven't seen the last one yet. Well, my fingers are certainly crossed.

Edith and Mary
Image: Tumblr

With that, let's all say it together, "Poor Edith."

Downton Abbey's series finale airs Sunday, March 6, at 9/8c on PBS.

One of the best moments of tonight's episode involved Leakes showing Kim Fields how to throw shade. Leakes believes that every woman should be able to make sarcastic quips about friends and foes alike. Her shade lessons may eventually come back to haunt her, but that won't stop her from showing Fields how it's done.

There's nothing quite like hearing NeNe Leakes describe herself in the third person. This is one of those small things that people really missed while she was gone and are so glad to witness now that she's back. Even better, however, is when Leakes mentions her alter ego NayNay.

4. She has the best RHOA interviews

Phaedra Parks comes across as incredibly fake in her interview segments, Cynthia Bailey is boring, and the other ladies aren't much better. Leakes, on the other hand, knows how to keep viewers amused, even when she's the only person being filmed. All she needs to do is make a funny face, and she immediately has viewers in stitches.

"Start going to the gym regularly, and even though you don’t know that much about exercise and you’re way too weak to do pretty much anything but lift 5 lb weights and use the elliptical machines with the old people, do it until your sweat makes a puddle on the floor," Bleyaert writes. "Then go home and go to bed early and the next day do it again. And then again. And then again."

Eventually, you'll find some purpose outside your old relationship that inspires you to move on. That purpose, for Bleyaert, was his newfound strength — and a new ladyfriend he met at the gym.

"Her name is Melissa and she works in the building next to you," he writes. "She’s worked there for two years. She asks you out to dinner on Friday, promising it’ll be healthy."

And while it's told from a male perspective, this holds true no matter your gender. The lesson is this: Life will get better after even a brutal breakup — and you'll probably find a way to improve in the process.

Oh, but don't forget step four in there, too. "No fruit juice. Too much sugar!!"

On the latest episode of the Real Housewives of Potomac, a number of things happened that might make one think that the show is amping up to some serious confrontation — Karen refused Katie's invitation to be on the host committee for a Rost Foundation event, Ashley and Katie did some more gossiping, Giselle got annoyed by everyone, and the ladies drank heavily on a yacht (everyone knows nothing good ever happens at sea.) What else could happen? The season is so young, and so many bananas things have happened already — here's a brief look at some of them.

1.The Time Michael Almost Took His Pants Off in Front of Everyone

On Sunday's new episode, Karen decided she'd throw a party on a yacht so she could show Ashley how to entertain correctly. (She and the other ladies are still so mad about the lack of open bar at her birthday party.) Of course, when one takes to the sea, removing one's pants is on the list of things to do. At least, it is if you're Ashley's husband, Michael, who fully tried to take off his pants and jump in the water. The ladies intervened and stopped the madness, but more than a little part of me wishes they hadn't.

2. The Time Katie and Andrew Took Their Make-Out Tour on the Road

Katie wants to marry Andrew. Andrew doesn't seem like he wants to marry Katie, but this did not stop them from engaging in one long PDA throughout Ashley's birthday party. I guess you might need an open bar after witnessing that.

3. The Time Ashley Admitted to Googling Everyone

Everyone Googles. But you don't tell people that you Google them, and you definitely don't tell people what you found out about them. Apparently, Ashley feels differently and had no problem admitting what she'd been up to online to Katie, who passed it on to the other women, because of course. The odds that the ladies are ever really going to let that go? About the same as anyone ever forgetting the aforementioned pants incident.

4. The Crab Boil Incident

There are just so many layers to this, it can hardly be counted as just one moment. Charisse had a crab boil. Crabs were boiled, but not by a chef? At her crab boil, Charisse spent a lot of time not in the same room as her guests, complaining about Gizelle and her friend Kal (who were downstairs preparing the crabs because there was no chef) and raging about a comment Kal made about Charisse's hair. Gizelle and Kal were ejected from Charisse's house, but there was a really awkward follow-up conversation in which Gizelle tried to apologize and was rebuffed and reprimanded by Karen.

5. The Time with the Birthday Seat

At Karen's birthday party, Gizelle sat in the wrong seat. This did not go over well with Karen, who thought it should have been obvious to Gizelle that you don't sit at the center of the table, and decided to gift her with a framed list of 5 Rules of Etiquette. (Moment 5b: Gizelle uses Karen's "gift" to fix her bangs.)

The Walking Dead: 6 reasons Rick and Michonne are perfect for each other

I've not been shy about my hope that these two would hook up. I have no shame in my shipping, and I was shipping Rick and Michonne hard. So while tonight's magic moment wasn't necessarily surprising (especially in light of last week's spoiler), its timing did catch me off-guard.

That was kind of the brilliance of it, right? We've all been waiting for it to happen for so long, we kind of just stopped thinking about it very actively. So, in a way, we weren't expecting our favorite apocalyptic duo to, uh, du-o it this week.

But they did, and it was brilliant.

In case you missed it, Rick returned from a supply run with Daryl — another great relationship that progressed tonight, all hail the Rickyl bromance — and sunk into the sofa in the Alexandria home he and Michonne are apparently sharing now.

A few minutes later, Michonne joins him, and they watch Judith on the baby monitor for a few moments before Rick reveals he brought something back for Michonne. He slips a pack of mints into her hand, their hands kind of clasp and then, well, you know how these things go.

Later, as they lay naked in bed, the guy Rick and Darryl picked up that day bursts into the room. As The Talking Dead's Chris Hardwick put it, the sex was so good they saw Jesus. Ba-dum-tish!

So, in honor of Richonne officially becoming a ship and making the dreams of all Richonne shippers come true, here are a few reasons Rick and Michonne are perfect for each other.

1. It's a natural evolution

When I watch The Walking Dead, I'm always struck by two thoughts. No. 1, sh*t, I need to step up my cardio if I'm going to survive the zombie apocalypse and, no. 2, why aren't more people having sex in the zombie apocalypse? Aside from Maggie and Glenn (who've obviously been doin' it, 'cause baby) and Abraham's prior sexcapades, we haven't seen a whole lot of intimacy. And while I get that this is, like, worst-case life scenario and all, I think that almost makes it more likely people would seek physical connections. Rick and Michonne have always had such a palpable chemistry that it seems only natural for that to translate into something physical.

2. Michonne feels deeply for Rick's kids, too

One of tonight's most heart-rending moments happened between Carl and Michonne. When she approaches him about going out into the woods alone — and specifically leading walker-fied Deanna to Spencer to kill — she asks him why he would do such a thing. He explains that he couldn't kill her because he felt it should be someone she loved who did it. He then shared, "I would do it for you." Michonne hugs Carl close and says she would too. The bond between these two is so very sweet! In many ways, Michonne has served as a surrogate mother for Carl and Judith. She truly loves those kids, which only intensifies the connection between her and Rick.

3. They are finally ready

In an interview with TVLine, showrunner Scott M. Gimple reveals that this is a story he was "interested in pursuing for a long time, even before I was running the show." He admits he had some reservations about solidifying the relationship so soon after Jessie's death, but that actually also made the timing right. "The Jessie relationship was critical for Rick in opening up that side of himself, for having a larger personal world, to have something more than survival. Jessie's impact on Rick was making him see that he is a whole person and he can live a full emotional life, despite the state of the world, despite the history he's had."

4. I mean, look at them

Right? C'mon... right?? Yes, this is superficial. In my defense, it is but one of many reasons, most of which are not superficial. Having said that, seriously you guys — they are both so so beautiful. It's only fitting that if two people that gorgeous end up in the same orbit during the zombie apocalypse that they would collide.

5. They understand each other

TWD

Although everyone seems to be on the same page that this can't be a one night stand, given their history, you also get the sense that Rick and Michonne could just go back to the ways things were if that's what one or the other needed. They've been through so much together that they've come to better know each other than perhaps they know anyone else. Even before their tryst tonight, there was a real sense of intimacy to their friendship in how much they had allowed each other into their lives. That kind of foundation is hard to come by in relationships, much less in the zombie apocalypse.

6. They make fans feel some kind of way

Obviously, I am one of them. However, let the record show I am most certainly not alone in my elation over the official ship-dom of Rick and Michonne. Here are some of my favorite responses from fellow Richonne shippers in the Twittersphere.
