Cancer-detecting saliva test could be available in the UK by 2020

More: New blood test may detect breast cancer sooner than mammograms

U.S.-based scientist Professor David Wong and his team, who developed the system, found that saliva contained fragments of the genetic messenger molecule RNA linked to cancer, reported MailOnline.

Professor Wong spoke about the so-called "liquid biopsy" at the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s annual meeting in Washington.

Patients who buy the test, which would cost around £15, would have to send a small amount of saliva to a laboratory, where it would be analysed to see if it contained fragments of tumour DNA.

Professor Wong revealed that the test is to undergo full clinical trials later this year.

"If there is [a] circulating signature of a tumour in a person's blood or saliva, this test will find it," he said. "We need less than one drop of saliva and we can turn the test around in 10 minutes. It can be done in a doctor’s office while you wait. Early detection is crucial."

Right now in the U.K., a blood test or tissue sample is used to diagnose cancer and the results can take up to two weeks to come back.

More: Scientists may have discovered how to stop breast cancer from growing

So far, the test has been trialled on lung cancer patients with "near-perfect" accuracy, however Professor Wong thinks it could be successful in detecting other types of cancer, such as pancreatic cancer, which has no "effective early screening capabilities".

Dr Áine McCarthy, Cancer Research UK’s science information officer, told Huffington Post: "Developing new techniques to diagnose cancer earlier is an important part of global efforts to tackle the disease. Detecting tell-tale signs of cancer in blood, saliva or urine, instead of taking tissue samples, is one area that’s showing a lot of promise and could speed up diagnosis. Researchers are working to get these tests ready for routine use — it’s crucial to understand how accurate they are and how doctors can best use them alongside current scans and tests."

Warning signs of cancer you should never ignore

  • Sudden weight loss when not dieting
  • Blood in your faeces or urine
  • Coughing up blood
  • A lump in the breast, groin, testes, side of the neck or armpit
  • Severe, unexplained pains or aches
  • Indigestion or difficulty swallowing
  • Obvious change in the size, colour, shape or thickness of a wart, mole or mouth sore
  • Persistent fatigue, nausea or vomiting

Korean beef lettuce wraps — a sticky-sweet twist on the low-carb appetizer

$

Now they're one of my favorite ways to enjoy meals with just a little less guilt than normal (usually involving carbs of some sort).

Korean beef is crazy delicious. If you're a fan of that sticky-sweet thing so many Asian-inspired dishes have, you'll love Korean beef. That said, it's usually served over noodles of some sort (or white rice). To keep things a bit lighter, crispy bibb lettuce wraps make an excellent substitution and a fun way to enjoy this dish in a lower-calorie way.

Korean beef lettuce wraps recipe

Serves 4

Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 15 minutes | Total time: 25 minutes

Ingredients:

For the sauce

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/2 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 tablespoon red chili paste
  • 2 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon minced fresh ginger

For the lettuce wraps

  • 1 head bibb lettuce, outer leaves carefully torn off, washed and patted dry
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 tablespoon sesame oil
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish
  • Chopped green onion, for garnish

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, combine all the ingredients for the sauce, whisk them together, and set aside.
  2. Into a large skillet over medium-high heat, pour the sesame oil.
  3. Once the oil is hot, add the beef, and cook, breaking it into small pieces with a spatula until browned.
  4. Drain any excess fat from the pan, and then add the sauce. Reduce the heat to medium-low, and cook for another 2 – 3 minutes until reduced and thickened, fully coating all the beef.
  5. Spoon the beef into the lettuce leaves (doubling up the leaves is a good idea to limit the dripping), and garnish with sesame seeds and green onions.

More: Mob Wives' Angela Raiola's reaction to her cancer is devastating

According to the Associated Press, Angela "Big Ang" Raiola will appear on The Dr. Oz Show this week to give fans a new update after she was diagnosed with cancer for the third time in under a year.

Raiola, who is now battling stage 4 brain and lung cancer, said in the tearful new interview that she's still fighting to improve her health, keeping her family in mind all the way.

"I look at my kids and my grandchildren and I know how much they need me," Raiola, who is a mother of two and grandmother of six, tells Oz.

More: Mob Wives' Big Ang's life-threatening cancer diagnosis revealed

Since she was first diagnosed with throat and lung cancer last year, Raiola has undergone extensive treatment, including several surgeries. She's been declared cancer-free twice since beginning treatment, only to have her cancer return and spread each time. According to her interview with Oz, radiation and chemotherapy have not been effective this time around, and she's beginning a new kind of treatment aimed at strengthening her body's immune system. Throughout the treatments and setbacks, Raiola admitted that her diagnosis has had a negative effect on her mental strength.

"Sometimes I feel I’m gonna be fine, and sometimes I just don’t think I am," she says.

Raiola gained fame as a star on Mob Wives, which later resulted in the spinoff shows Big Ang and Miami Monkey. Raiola, who smoked cigarettes for 40 years, has said previously that she was told by doctors smoking was almost certainly the cause for her cancer. She has since quit and now speaks publicly to encourage others to drop the habit or avoid beginning to smoke in the first place.

Raiola's interview with Oz is set to air Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

Over the weekend, West claimed to be $53 million in debt and begged Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for $1 billion to fund his art — but now he says his bank account is flush. So what gives?

For the record, $53 million is less than the estimated individual net worth of his wife Kim Kardashian, listed at approximately $85 million.

General Hospital’s Nathan Varni caught gossiping about a cast member

The debacle began when rumors surfaced via Daytime Confidential that longtime cast member Rebecca Herbst had reached an impasse with ABC during contract negotiations. She has been public about her struggles with the way the storyline for her character, Elizabeth Webber, has been written in the past few years.

More: 7 Things to know about General Hospital's Matt Cohen

It is crucial for studio executives to lock in her contract, because she has a main storyline with Jason Morgan (Billy Miller) regarding their disturbed son. To add more flames to the fire, the website also mentioned that NBC was eager to sign Herbst as a possible replacement for the character of Abby, formerly played by Kate Mansi, on Days of Our Lives.

With the rumors going around about Herbst, all hell broke loose on the journalistic side once it was revealed that Varni had broken network code. He talked in a private message with a fan on Facebook about the actress’s contract negotiations and then @WubsNet, a General Hospital fan account, published that message on Twitter.

Nathan Varni's Facebook message

Nathan Varni's Facebook message

"We’ve done everything we possibly can to entice her to say [sic] and now it is Becky’s final decision,” Varni wrote to the unnamed fan. “I would hope the fans of GH would be more mature to stick with us if a certain actor or actress leaves. But at the end of the day I respect people’s decision not to watch and we can all watch GH sail into the sunset.”

The executive goes on to say in the message that the soap needs as much support as possible and encourages the fan to keep watching.

Once that message was made public on Feb. 13, Varni took action by posting a rebuttal on Facebook, claiming his account was hacked. He mentioned that he will no longer be answering private messages.

Most networks have a strict policy with the media regarding contract negotiations. Most journalists find themselves met with the stereotypical response of “no comment.” So why was Varni allowed to run his loose lips on this matter?

There has been no official word from ABC Daytime, so it is unclear if Varni was punished for his misdeed or the hacked excuse was a plausible one. Fans sit around waiting to hear about Herbst’s next move: will it be back to GH, or over to DOOL to hang with residents of Salem?

Stay tuned — this drama isn’t over yet.

Man's Valentine's Day proposal turns out to be a mean trick (VIDEO)

More: Sexist man dumps girlfriend on Valentine's Day and films the entire thing

But it appears that his long-suffering partner Jenny Davies was caught up in the seemingly romantic moment, covering her face in shock as Holmes goes down on one knee.

"You know you make me the happiest man in the world. I’m shaking but I love you to bits, you know that, right?" he says to her. "I want you to make me the happiest man in the world. I have got a question to ask you," he goes on, as he produces a small box from his pocket.

The tension builds during the next few seconds… before Holmes opens the box to reveal a tea bag and asks Davies, "will you make me a cup of tea?"

Ouch.

But it's been great for Holmes’ online fame, as the clip has been viewed over 10 million times in 24 hours.

The video shows Davies react as you would expect her to: taking the box and chucking it behind her while she storms out of the room swearing.

However, Holmes insists his girlfriend has already forgiven him, telling MailOnline: "I grovelled for a bit and played it back to her and she saw the funny side. I got my cup of tea within 15 to 20 minutes. She was a bit annoyed about it but she knows what I’m like."

He even posted a picture of his cup of tea to Facebook to prove he was back in Davies' good books.

According to MailOnline, Davies was already considering the possibility that Holmes would propose because it was Valentine's Day.

But she said: "I calmed down when he told me 'I wouldn't do it like that'. I was in my pyjamas sat on the sofa. I thought after I was glad it hadn't happened like that, not to be ungrateful."

Davies admitted she started crying when Holmes got down on one knee, but said: "Brad didn't mean to hurt or upset me in the video."

But this is the Internet, people, and who really knows the truth? Perhaps Davies was in on the joke. Perhaps Holmes had to make his own tea. Or perhaps he will soon give Davies the (genuine) proposal she's longing for.

Researchers work to normalize sex and intimacy for women living with HIV

More: 21 Staggering HIV/AIDS facts that prove awareness is still so important

"This is not cancer, and nobody's ever going to make it a pretty disease," says one Vancouver woman living with HIV. The woman shared her feelings of hopelessness with Simon Fraser University researcher Allison Carter. "Twenty years ago maybe we thought that there was some hope. There is no hope. This will always have a stigma..."

Carter says that the pained words of this woman — who for obvious reasons opted to stay anonymous — drive her in her work to challenge misinformed public perceptions of HIV-positive women. Carter is not your typical HIV/AIDS researcher — she has a fresh, unusual agenda. While other researchers have focused on public health issues, such as prevention, Carter focuses on happiness and pleasure, with the hope that her research on HIV will help women with the disease have fulfilling sexual relationships.

"All too often, disclosure of one’s HIV status can result in insults and rejection. This makes it really hard for women (and men) with HIV to find love and many continue to live in silence and isolation," she tells SheKnows.

Carter chose to focus on HIV-positive women because they've been historically underrepresented in studies on people living with the disease. Using the data of 1,425 Canadian women collected over time by the Canadian HIV Women’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Cohort, Carter found that only 22 percent of HIV-positive women are in long-term happy sexual relationships. While their happiness should be celebrated, she hopes to see an increase in the numbers of women living with HIV in fulfilling relationships.

Though medical advances may make the disease manageable, people living with HIV in Canada find that it's the stigma — more than the disease itself — that can hurt the most. In a study of Canadians' attitudes about HIV/AIDS, 22 percent of respondents admitted to stigmatizing people with HIV/AIDS a "moderate" amount — a number that is probably a lot higher in reality, as it only includes people who actually admit to having negative views of people with HIV/AIDS.

More: Charlie Sheen makes dark confession in open letter about HIV diagnosis

Carter says the stigma Canadian women living with the disease face "stems from a number of factors, including research, cultural and media representations of people with HIV as 'dirty,' 'diseased' and 'criminal.' As a result, many times the public view is uncompassionate and misinformed."

But she's working hard to re-educate the public about the disease and help HIV-positive women have better sex lives: "All women, including those living with HIV, are deserving of fulfilling, pleasurable (and safe) sexual experiences and relationships." Plus, with medical advances, your risk of contracting HIV from your partner can be practically eliminated. if medications are taken correctly.

"The advances in HIV treatment have been phenomenal," Carter explains. "People living with HIV who are on treatment have an undetectable viral load, meaning the virus in the blood is so low that our current technology is unable to even detect it. Research unequivocally shows that with an undetectable viral load, the chance of transmitting HIV is almost zero." Of course risks can't be wiped out completely, so she encourages anyone considering having sex with an HIV-positive partner to talk to their doctor about how best to manage treatment.

Carter points out that while some women have come to terms with their diagnosis, several haven't: "It truly saddens me to know that there are some women who, in 2016, are living in total silence. These are women who have never spoken the word 'HIV' aloud or haven't told a single person that they are living with the virus."

Carter is building a website to help educate the public about HIV, and says that her biggest hope is that her research will "help foster more understanding, acceptance and compassion towards women with HIV, so that the next time a woman discloses she’s met with a second date!"

"I think what's happening is more women who probably didn't even think to pick up the issue are actually going to say, ‘Wow, I'm being represented here today. I'm gong to take this, look through it and hopefully be empowered,'" she added.

Graham also explained that she really objects to the term "plus size" as a comparison to other models.

"I hate a label," she said. "I think that when we introduce Hailey [Clauson, another cover model], we don't say, ‘This is skinny girl Hailey, and this is plus-size Ashley,'" she explained. "We're both models. At the end of the day, I just want to be recognized as a model. Yes, I got curves. Yes, I got things that I like to flaunt and talk about and be called curvy, sexilicious, but at the end of the day I don't want a label."

Graham said she is pleasantly shocked that SI chose her for their famed cover.

"I knew the fact that I was going to be in the pages of Sports Illustrated was going to be a huge deal, just because the fact that I'm a size 14-16 sexy lady, but to actually be on the cover, I didn't think that Sports Illustrated was going to take that risk," she said. "But right now what they are doing is they are setting the standard for what everybody else — magazines, designers, people in Hollywood, should be doing."

Graham shared the cover, and her palpable excitement over it, on her Instagram page.

This isn't the effortless, tousled bob we've come to see on trendsetters at red carpet event after red carpet event. Taylor is taking it back to a straight, single-layer bob reminiscent of the '20s (and Daisy Buchanan from The Great Gatsby for all my literary fans).

What did I say?

While you can't go wrong with a good messy bob, it's hard not to love this classic and elegant style Taylor is bringing back. It makes me wish she had showed up with a cigarette holder and a flapper dress.

Though, maybe Taylor's crop top and big skirt is the new picture of glamour. It has the perfect touch of tradition, her bob a nod to classic beauty, yet it makes a statement for modern style with the crop top, colorblocking and peek-a-boo legs.

More: Kanye West takes aim at white media in latest Twitter rant

According to a new report, Kanye West's recent feud-igniting rants on Twitter are not sitting well with Kim Kardashian.

A source close to the family reportedly told People magazine that while Kardashian "is a very supportive wife" and "rarely complains," she wishes West would stop running his mouth on social media.

"What causes friction in the marriage, however, is Kanye's compulsive tweeting," the insider said. "Kim can't stand it. She is all for self-promotion, but doesn't approve of Twitter drama."

The source reportedly added that Kardashian was particularly upset about West's recent decision to bash his ex-girlfriend Amber Rose during a Twitter feud with rapper Wiz Khalifa.

"She was very mad about Kanye's Amber Rose drama," the source said.

More: Selena Gomez weighs in on Kanye West's controversial Taylor Swift lyrics

Kardashian was the one who later tried to patch things up with Rose, taking a selfie with her. Another source said she did it because "Kim is a mom and wants to be a role model. She doesn't want to be involved in ridiculous drama."

West's latest drama involves Taylor Swift, who appeared to throw shade during her Grammys acceptance speech after winning album of the year.

"As the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice, I want to say to all the young women out there: There are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame," Swift said, seeming to reference West's new song "Famous," which says about Swift, "I made that bitch famous."

West denies that his lyrics were dissing Swift, and explained in a series of tweets that he had her permission for the line, something Swift's rep denied.

Believe it or not, using your Fitbit can become unhealthy

$
0
0

“When the Fitbit owns you instead of you owning the Fitbit, that’s when it becomes a problem,” says Dr. Stephen Graef, sports psychologist at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Indeed, some people find themselves obsessing over goals. Becky D’Angelo-Veitch, a Fitbit owner, found herself with 10 minutes the other night, so she walked laps around the downstairs of her house to get the extra 1,000 steps she needed. She’s started leaving her iPad home when she goes to work, because she only has the app on her iPad and was checking it too much during the day.

More: 6 Yoga stretches to help you get rid of neck pain

On the other hand, not all users consider fitness trackers to be stressful. Julie Grisham, owner of a Fitbit One, says the Fitbit has become a motivator for her; she sets small goals and ties them to specific activities.

Joke Slagle says she competes only with herself, and if she doesn’t meet a goal one day, she tries to make sure to meet it the next. “It just keeps me motivated to keep moving and take an extra walk or play outside with our kids/pup,” she says. She doesn’t use it for calorie burning statistics or sleep, just activity levels.

And that's the right idea.

One downside to this kind of technology is considering it a scientific tool when, in reality, it’s only an accountability tool, says Eliza Kingsford, licensed psychotherapist, group fitness instructor and executive director of Wellspring Camps. “People shouldn’t be exercising as a way to ‘earn’ extra calories, and this inherently works against them,” she says. She adds that the algorithms used to determine calorie consumption are based on height, weight and age, which vary widely by person.

More: BMI is a lie — here's why

Another downside is becoming too externally focused and motivated, says Dr. Graef. “Rather than just being mindful of eating or exercising, we are instead too focused on the outcomes,” he says. We’re not enjoying the process.

If you’re exercising through pain just to make goals, then you’re making decisions based on technology instead of what your body is telling you, which isn’t always good. “Keep in mind that the Fitbit isn’t responsible for your success,” says Dr. Graef. “You are! It’s just a data tracker.”

He preaches moderation: “Go some days of exercise or eating without using [a fitness tracker]. Park far away in the parking lot because it’s healthy, not to get your '10,000' steps. Go outside for a run, and actually notice the sounds of nature, the feel of your breath, rather than constantly looking down at the digital reader. By not using [the fitness tracker] on some days, it reduces the addiction.”

More: How to tell which vitamins and minerals you're lacking

If you’re prone to exercise addiction or have a more addictive nature in general, you may want to avoid this technology. If you use it, set realistic goals. And always be aware.

“Are you starting to notice that you feel a bit of anxiety if you forget your Fitbit?” asks Dr. Graef. “Do you never exercise without it? Do you rely too much on the data and use this data and only this data to determine success? Treat this exercise monitor as any other piece of technology (laptop, cellphone, TV). Know when too much is too much, and balance it out.”

Think beyond salad dressings: Add a few slices of avocado to your salad, drizzle some high quality olive oil over your butternut squash soup, or add some nuts and seeds to salads, soups, and roasted vegetables.

Heating lycopene, a carotenoid found in tomatoes and other red- and orange-hued vegetables, increases its bioavailability, which means that your body will absorb more of the cancer-fighting compound. Enjoy tomatoes in sauces, soups and stews; you can even add roasted tomatoes to a salsa for a smoky flavor.

Some nutrients (polyphenols, glucosinolates, beta-carotene, lutein) are increased in broccoli when it’s cooked, while others (vitamin C) are destroyed — so you can enjoy broccoli raw or cooked.

Chopping garlic to a fine mince and letting it sit for 10 minutes allows for more allicin, a sulfur-containing compound with anti-inflammatory benefits, to form. Chop garlic at the start of your prep work and then move on to any other vegetables. By the time you're done with all of your chopping, your garlic will be much more nutritious!

The folate in asparagus, broccoli and Brussels sprouts is sensitive to heat. Lightly steam these vegetables to preserve the most folate.

The vitamin C in spinach and other veggies is water-soluble, so it can leach out in the water if you steam or boil it. Serve vitamin C-rich veggies raw, or, if need be, lightly sauté them.

How to butcher chicken, save money and feel like a real chef (INFOGRAPHIC)

When you butcher your own chicken, you get plenty of meat no matter what you're making, plus those leftover bones for homemade stock.

Besides, when the zombie apocalypse comes, being able to break down a bird will make you a valuable asset to your group. The good news is, it's not that tough. All you need is a good, sharp knife, a pair of kitchen scissors (optional) and a little chicken anatomy know-how.

Breaking down a chicken has several steps. Stop anywhere along the way depending on the preparation your recipe calls for. Before you begin, make sure you have all your tools out.

Step 1: Prepare the chicken

Remove the neck and giblets, which may be stuffed inside the cavity. Use a paper towel to blot any moisture off the bird.

Step 2: Remove the backbone (spatchcock/butterfly)

Position the chicken on a stable cutting board on its stomach (wings facing down) with the cavity facing you.

Locate the spine (down the center of the back).

Use a pair of kitchen utility scissors or a sharp knife to cut all the way down either side of the spine, inserting one blade into the cavity and carefully cutting down the back as close to the spine as possible. If you're using a knife, push the blade away from you. This should completely remove the spine, but if not, you can use your scissors or knife to just cut any extra pieces of meat holding it on.

Flip the chicken over with the wings still facing you, locate the triangle of cartilage at the top of the breastbone, and use your knife to cut about 1/4 inch down. Use your fingers to open up the hole it creates to expose the breastbone. This will allow it to lie flat during the rest of the process.

If your recipe calls for a spatchcocked chicken, you're finished. Just lay it with the skin side up, and tuck the wings under for more even cooking.

Step 3: Halve the chicken

With the chicken still skin side down, use your knife to carefully cut around and underneath the breastbone on either side. It should pull out fairly easily. Use your knife to gently cut the chicken in half, following the line where the breastbone used to be.

Step 4: Remove the wings and legs (six pieces)

Flip the bird over so the skin is facing up, and pull the wings away from the body so you can see the joint that attaches to the body. You can either cut down through the joint where it moves or just above it, taking just a little of the breast meat with you (which leaves the bones more intact and makes it a meatier cut).

Many people prefer to remove the wingtips because they aren't very meaty but are great in stock. To do so, pull the wingtip away from the rest of the wing. You'll see clear demarcation where the joint of the wingtip is. Just put your knife along that, and use your free hand to help you push down through the joint to remove it.

By now, the legs are hanging on by nothing but skin. Flip the chicken back over so the skin is facing up, pull the drumstick away from the body, and carefully cut through the skin between the thigh and the body. This will leave the thigh still attached to the drumstick.

Your chicken is now broken down into six pieces: two full breasts, two legs (consisting of the thigh and drumstick) and two wings (consisting of the wing itself and what's called the drumette).

Step 5: Break down the legs and breasts (10 pieces)

Take each leg, creating a V shape on the cutting board, and use your finger to locate the joint, then place the blade of the knife where you believe the joint is. Lightly cut through the skin at the apex of the V (where you felt the joint) until you locate the joint, and cut through. If you hit bone, just move the knife back in the direction of the lower part of the V.

Place the breasts skin side up on the cutting board, and place your knife to cut it in half in two equal pieces. Gently cut through the skin. When you feel bone, use the palm of your other hand (keeping your fingers out of the way of the blade) to help you cut through the bones.

Your chicken is now broken down into eight pieces: four breast halves, two thighs, two drumsticks and two wings (consisting of the wing itself and drumette).

4 Grocery budget basics to keep you financially fit

One area I always tend to struggle with regarding our budget is groceries. I'm not sure why, but it seems to be the area that I stray from most often. This year, I've resolved to stay on track with our grocery budget and watch it a little more closely. There are some great tips from Chase Bank in this article.

Here are the basics I'm trying to stick to this year to keep me on track:

1. Create a plan

Each Sunday, I make a meal plan and one trip to the grocery store for the week. Multiple trips to the grocery store, due to lack of planning, always gets me off track. Going to the store just once, means I'm purchasing just what we need and not mindlessly making trips throughout the week. I find that avoiding those unnecessary trips saves a good bit and keeps us closer to our budget. I also find that having a plan keeps us from eating out as much — which is always great for the budget.

2. Plan around savings

I look at the weekly ad for the grocery store each week and attempt to plan based on savings. Which meats and produce can I find the best price on? Those are the items that will be the stars in our dinner dishes for the week. The great news is that everything in the store eventually cycles through, so you'll never get bored with your choices by planning around the savings.

3. Shop full

I know that sounds crazy, but I spend more money when I shop hungry. Everything looks delicious and it gets me off my plan. If I shop when I feel full, then I'm less likely to purchase impulse items and more likely to stick to the list of things I really need. It also ensures I don't end up with a shopping cart full of snacks for the week.

4. Shop the best deals

Do you have a store in your town that is notorious for their great prices? Or maybe in the town over? It may take a little extra driving or planning, but we'll be shopping at grocery stores with lower prices and quality products, rather than overpaying each week.

The Bachelor contestant Lex McAllister dies after alleged drug overdose

Lex McAllister, who appeared on Season 14 of The Bachelor with Jake Pavelka, died Tuesday morning in a Columbus, Ohio, hospital after an apparently purposeful prescription drug overdose.

Local law enforcement received a 911 call Saturday afternoon after McAllister was found unresponsive. She was initially listed in stable condition, but took a turn for the worse and by Tuesday, her family decided to remove her from life support.

A source close to McAllister told TMZ that she suffered from depression and bipolar disorder. The information she shared publicly on her Facebook revealed no signs of her struggle, and she lists herself as being in a relationship with a man named Matt Danielson, who, although originally from Columbus, now lists his home as Indianapolis, Indiana.

McAllister was active on Instagram as recently as a week ago, when she wished her longtime best friend a happy birthday.

Although McAllister was eliminated in the first week of her The Bachelor season, she hit the spotlight once again when she spoke out against rumors that Vienna Girardi cheated on Pavelka, causing their breakup.

"I find it hard to believe that she is guilty of anything negative in the breakup... except for falling in love with a man whose heart was clearly not available for her in the first place,” she told TMZ.

McAllister is not the first of Pavelka’s rejected ladies to commit suicide. Gia Allemand, another Season 14 contestant, took her own life in 2013 after an argument with her boyfriend. Pavelka, who tweeted very emotional messages after Allemand's passing, has not commented on McAllister as of this writing.

If you suspect someone might be considering suicide, or you have struggled with those thoughts yourself, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Move over argan, there's a new facial nut oil on the skin-care scene

Cacay oil comes from the cacay nut, which grows in South America, and it’s being touted as the new skin-boosting, anti-ageing skin-care ingredient set to knock argan oil off its pedestal.

In the U.S., skin-care product Cacay Naturals' oils are in high demand. (Mail Online reported that Amazon alone has seen an astounding 9,000 percent spike in sales of its 30ml bottles.) According to Cacay Naturals, the product contains three times more retinol than other popular oils, such as rose hip, and 50 percent more Vitamin E than plant-based argan oil, which comes from the Moroccan argan tree.

Here in the U.K., luxury beauty company Bamford uses cacay in its Restore Elixir (£75) and Olixia Skincare adds it to its Brilliance Facial Oil (£31.45).

Reviews of Brilliance are certainly positive.

"This is seriously the best facial oil I have ever used," posted Jade Taylor. "It leaves skin non greasy & doesn’t feel 'icky' on your hands either. My skin didn’t feel oily and I had no spots… it was perfect as a moisturiser before makeup and even when not wearing makeup it didn’t look greasy or have a sheen to it. This is the ONLY oil I will use now. Seriously."

"This beautifully scented face oil is so light and easy to apply, it's non greasy and left my skin feeling super soft. My complexion has been clear for months since using it ... A beauty product I would definitely recommend!" commented Jeanette Young.

As well as cacay oil, Brilliance Facial Oil contains 17 naturally sourced oils, including jojoba, apricot, camellia and patchouli, which also deserve some credit for the positive reviews.

The key ingredients of Restore Elixir, which are 79 percent organic, are rose hip and cacay oils. The company says the cacay is "sourced through a project to establish the cacay tree crop as an alternative for sustainable economic development in Colombia," which supports "communities in conflict zones" and has "facilitated the reforestation of 5,000 hectares in the Amazon."

As well as cacay oil's skin-care properties, it's sure to appeal to the health-conscious beauty consumer. BeautyMart’s Anna-Marie Solowij told the Sunday Times Style magazine, "It’s cold-pressed and doesn’t require a preservative."

Alas, for 100 percent natural and organic cacay oil, the only option so far is Cacay Naturals, which is currently unavailable on Amazon U.K. But if the buzz continues, the range of cacay products is sure to grow.

Why Younger makes me want to be young again

More: 8 reasons I wish I'd gone to high school on One Tree Hill

For most of us, reliving our 20s is not an option, but that is exactly what Liza Miller, the title character in the TV Land series Younger is doing. Played by Sutton Foster, Liza is a 40-year old, recently-divorced mother. Liza left the workforce to raise her now-teenaged daughter, but her ex-husband’s gambling debts leave her in desperate need of a job. Ivy-League educated, Liza finds that no one wants to hire a “middle aged” woman who hasn’t worked outside the home in over a decade.

After another dead-end job interview, Liza goes out with her BFF Maggie (played by Debi Mazar) and complains that everyone wants to hire someone much younger than her. Maggie suggests she become just that.

With thrift store clothes, a new hairstyle and a new attitude — Liza becomes a younger version of herself. Ah! If only it were that simple. All the beauty companies selling anti-aging creams would be on the unemployment line, chatting with all the plastic surgeons of the world. Immediately, with her new look and changed dates on her resume, she is hired at a publishing company.

In truth, Foster does look younger than 40 years old — her real age — but playing a 26-year-old is a stretch — especially in this day of high definition TV. Even if her face didn’t give her away (one co-worker does ask about her premature “crows feet,” and she says it is a hereditary trait), it is hard to believe that the inevitable sagging of naked lady parts wouldn’t raise suspicion that she is not actually in her third decade.

Since Liza is fulfilling a fantasy of so many women my age, I am willing to let that all slide. After all, who doesn't wish they could go back in time and live as their younger self with the knowledge that maturing brings?

More: 9 funny reasons my son thinks I grew up in prehistoric times

Watching the charismatic Sutton shave 14 years off her life and go from Tuesday night snoozing to midweek bar boozing is a lot of fun. I especially relate to Liza’s struggle to be current. Even though she has a teen daughter and has heard of Snapchat and Twitter, she still needs to ask if “trending” is a good thing.

One of the funniest scenes is when Liza is seen naked by some female co-workers at the gym and they are horrified to see that she is not bare down there. Fifteen years of marriage and fidelity have left her in the dark about the modern woman’s grooming rituals. But Liza is no “old dog,” and she picks up new tricks quickly. Soon, she is setting up Twitter accounts and off to the bikini waxer.

I also connect with Liza's journey as she goes from being a spectator in life to a more active participant. In an early scene, 40-year-old Liza video-chats with her daughter, who is spending a high school semester in India. It is clear that Liza is thrilled to support her daughter having an incredible adventure and very interested in hearing about it while sitting at home alone in her half-packed suburban living room.

Conversely, as 26 year-old Liza, she lives her own adventure. While not as exotic as India, her days and nights in Brooklyn give her own life excitement and purpose. She takes chances, makes mistakes, meets new people and has more fun.

As my own children go off on new adventures, I want to watch and support them, while also setting off on my own adventures. I don't have to be 26 years old to learn new things or stay current. I too want to make some changes, not be afraid to make mistakes, continue meeting new people and have some more fun. I may not be able to get “younger” like Liza, but I can become younger at heart.
