How my daughter's self-weaning helped me hand-express my breastmilk

0
0

More: I'm pro-breastfeeding — but I am ready for it to be over

My deeper emotional charge around hand expressing says a lot about how my labor and delivery affected my own breastfeeding initiation. I was 43 and had experienced four pregnancy losses before I finally delivered my only child. That final, fifth pregnancy was great, albeit tentative. I wanted my birth experience to be similar, but despite my best efforts, it wasn’t. After three days of labor, I had an unplanned C-section and was in a lot of postpartum pain. My milk was delayed due both to the drugs used during my C-section and the edema I had from being overhydrated.

During my hospital stay, there was a race to try and get my newborn daughter latched. On the second day, a lactation counselor tried to teach me how to hand-express. I couldn’t figure it out and was still groggy, in shock and in a lot of pain. Ouch! She hand-expressed for me, getting out the tiniest drop of colostrum. Oh, it hurt. I did not want to do that again, and I didn’t for a long time.

After that, a longer breastfeeding nightmare ensued. It was a rough go, but we eventually prevailed, and after two weeks of formula feeding and pumping, my daughter effectively latched and is still nursing today. I have tried to hand-express a few times since then, but that painful incident stuck in my mind as the first step of a hellish trajectory that echoed the trauma preceding it. Each time I tried, I bruised myself, as if I was unconsciously repeating the pain and harshness with which I had learned to associate hand-expressing.

More: What I've learned about the power of motherhood

Then recently, for the first time ever, my three-year-old independently decided not to breastfeed upon waking. This was after she had been home for nearly two weeks with a virus and nursing constantly. It happened that I was going on a business trip and would be gone all day long, and by then, I didn’t even know where my pump was. I was in the shower, and it was also two days after my first ever lactation counseling webinar, which focused on breastfeeding and self-care, including the importance of relaxation and empowerment. So I decided to follow some of my own advice, to relax and try hand-expressing again despite my past experiences.

This time around, I had some key advantages: I much better understood the mechanics of the breast; I knew how not to bruise myself; and I knew how to hold better posture. I didn’t feel much pressure, internal or external, to accomplish this task because I knew that somewhere in my home I had a pump if need be. I wasn’t engorged, just a little uncomfortable. I didn’t need to worry about my milk supply or even saving my milk, I just needed to take a wee comfort measure to take the edge off.

I thought about it more as an adventure than an effort — a little personal Mount Everest, a hill I wanted to climb because it was there. I knew how to be kinder to myself in all kinds of ways.

With all of that in mind, I actually did it! I hand-expressed in the shower. I didn’t have an amazing stream spray out like what I remember seeing the woman in the movie Breast Milk do. (At 15:11 in BreastMilk: The Movie, Part Six” on YouTube, she sprays her milk into a bowl while cooking — wow.) Mine were just little drops coming out in sporadic plops, but I did it! Both breasts were relieved, and I got to check off a little box on my personal list of breastfeeding accomplishments.

Do I wish I was that mom who could spray it out, that I had a stronger supply and mostly that I never had initiation problems or an unwanted C-section? You bet I do. What hand-expressing gave me back was a sense of knowing at least it was possible. It might have happened just this once at the beginning of the end, at our third-year mark, but it was there, and I did it.

20 Quirky foods facts about our nation's presidents

0
0

1. Bill Clinton's allergies

Bill Clinton is allergic to both chocolate and milk. In a cruel twist of fate, it turns out he is also allergic to flour. Those three allergies combined must make things pretty rough on this dessert-loving president.

2. Andrew Jackson's milk love

Andrew Jackson kept a cow on the grounds of the White House to ensure he could have fresh milk at all times.

3. Ronald Reagan's jelly beans

Reagan sure did love his jelly beans. Not only did Jelly Belly craft a blueberry flavor just for him, but his 1981 inauguration featured over 3 tons of sweet beans. We can only assume he didn't eat them all himself, but as the president, that was certainly his prerogative. In fact, a portrait using 10,000 of the sweet little treats now hangs in the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.

4. Dwight Eisenhower's tamales

Dwight Eisenhower sold tamales on the streets of Kansas to help provide for his family.

5. Barack Obama's chili preference

Who doesn't have a chili preference or two? Obama eats his chili over rice.

6. Andrew Jackson's popcorn parties

Andrew Jackson was a true family man. He hosted popcorn parties at his horseshoe-shaped table in the state dining room, where he indulged in popcorn with extra butter.

7. Thomas Jefferson the gourmet

Thomas Jefferson was a well-known gourmet who brought french fries to America and helped to popularize ice cream.

8. Ulysses S. Grant's bread quirk

Ulysses S. Grant wasn't as serious as he seems in his pictures. He loved rolling up bread into balls and throwing them at his kids at the dinner table.

9 . George W. Bush's simple menu

"Dubya" had a short list of items on his weekday lunch menu: BLTs, peanut butter and honey sandwiches, an occasional burger and grilled cheese sandwiches made with Kraft Singles on white bread. That concludes the "that makes sense" portion of this list.

10. William Howard Taft's stew

William Howard Taft kept a chef on staff, whose only duty was to cook his Teenage Mutant Ninja stew. Sorry for that mental image, but in fairness, Michael Bay ruined it first.

11. Harrison's and Garfield's special stew

William Henry Harrison and James Garfield loved themselves some squirrel stew.

12. George Washington's love of cherries

Washington never cut down their tree, but he did love cherries. He had to remove his false teeth to eat them, but those teeth weren't wooden. They were made of teeth from dead solders and hippopotamus ivory. Now you know why they told us they were made of wood.

13. Thomas Jefferson and his cheese

The town of Cheshire, Massachusetts, gifted Jefferson a 1,235-pound block of cheese made from the milk of every cow in the city. The cheese then spent two years ripening right in the White House.

14. Richard Nixon's ketchup quirk

Richard Nixon enjoyed ketchup over cottage cheese and pineapple for breakfast.

15. Calvin Coolidge's raw wheat

Calvin Coolidge liked boiled raw wheat and rye for breakfast — which he enjoyed while some poor bastard had to rub his head with Vaseline. Can't make this stuff up, people.

16. Lyndon B. Johnson's Fresca

After Lyndon B. Johnson stopped drinking, he developed such an obsession with Fresca that he had a button installed in the Oval Office so he could get it on demand.

17. Woodrow Wilson's raw eggs

Woodrow Wilson's breakfast often consisted of two raw eggs mixed in grape juice. Yum?

18. Franklin Delano Roosevelt's serving faux pas

In 1939, Queen Elizabeth became the first British monarch to set foot in the States since that whole messy revolution thing. FDR served her hot dogs with beer, which they enjoyed alongside White House blue-collar staff. Queen Elizabeth didn't know how to eat it, and rumor has it FDR got an earful from his mommy.

19. John Adams' cider-drinking abilities

Quick! What do you drink the minute you get out of bed? If you're John Adams, it's a large tankard of cider. Probably not the hard stuff, but jeez!

20. Gerald Ford's odd lunch

Gerald Ford enjoyed a scoop of butter pecan every day at lunch… on a scoop of cottage cheese covered with A.1. Steak Sauce and a sliced onion or quartered tomato.

How to Get Away with Murder: seven spoilers for the rest of Season 2

1. We'll learn more about Annalise's baby

Annalise HWTGAWM
Image: Giphy

One of the biggest bombs from the HTGAWM midseason premiere was learning via flashback that Annalise was once pregnant with a baby boy. Of course, now the big question is, what happened to him? Nowalk says the show will be answering this and other lingering queries about Annalise's past in the second half of this season.

"We’re going to be flashing back to 10 years ago and revealing a big part of her past. So we’ll see [late husband] Sam again," he told Entertainment Weekly. "We’ll see other characters from our show from 10 years ago. I don’t want to say who. It’s her past coming back to haunt her, but it’s also how you can’t ever run away from your past — like the scars that you have always show up again if you haven’t really let them heal properly. She has not healed properly. "

2. The truth about Wes' mother will finally be exposed

The midseason premiere featured a revealing flashback in which a pregnant Annalise meets Wes' mother, Rose, for the first time on a playground. As we learned earlier this season, Rose supposedly committed suicide when Wes (then named Christophe) was young. The now grown-up Wes is left grappling with the fact that Annalise not only knew his mom, but has also been keeping tabs on him ever since her death. It's a pretty tangled web, but thankfully, the show will unveil the connection between Annalise and Rose (and the role that the former might've played in the latter's death) sooner rather than later.

"We’re going to be telling the story of what happened to Wes’ mother over the back six episodes, so we’ll see flashbacks in each of those episodes," Nowalk said, also confirming that the details of Rose's death will serve as the new "murder mystery we’re trying to solve."

3. Wes won't ever be the same

how to get away with murder wes
Image: Giphy

It might be time to get "The Puppy" a new nickname. Having accidentally killed Sam in the first season and purposely shot Annalise earlier in Season 2, Wes isn't exactly the same innocent boy we first met in the pilot. This irrevocable change in him will be a factor going forward. "Like Annalise is traumatized in the first episode, we’ll see that Wes is completely traumatized too," Nowalk teased. "I think the only thing that actually makes him want to move on is to find out answers, but they’re both bonded in their complete, disturbed, psychological state. "

4. Asher will show a more serious side

We know Asher as the lovable goofball who can always be counted on to bring a little comic relief to an otherwise highly intense show. But that will change this season, following his dad's death (which Asher firmly believes was a result of murder and not suicide, as presumed). "He is trying to cover up his pain. Asher is very young emotionally and has never dealt with something this heavy, so he’s really leaning on everyone else to tell him: how does he do this?" Nowalk explained.

In order to cope, Asher will set off on his own investigation into his dad's death. "We’re going to see a much more serious, heavy side of Asher, but I think he still resembles himself. We’ll see who he has to lean on," Nowalk said.

5. Laurel will be torn from all sides

laurel hwgtawm
Image: Giphy

As we saw in the midseason premiere, Laurel is being pulled in all kinds of directions — checking on Wes, being Annalise's new Bonnie and dating Frank. This makes her life very complicated the rest of this season, as Nowalk acknowledged to EW. "[Laurel] was the only one in the room with Wes when he shot Annalise and witnessed the things that put her in the middle of Wes and Annalise. She’s also involved with Frank and she’s basically torn between all these alliances, and who does she protect and who does she trust and can she handle it all is the question," he explained, also promising there will be "some big bomb-drops for her" in the back half of the season.

More: 11 Predictions for How to Get Away with Murder Season 2

5. Some new characters will surface

According to Nowalk, a new family known as the Mahoneys (played by Adam Arkin, Roxanne Hart, and Wilson Bethel), will show up later this season as a pivotal part of a murder case. "They will appear over the back six of the series, and they’re an investment banker, rich family who play a big part in Annalise’s life," he teased.

6. We'll learn exactly why Frank killed Lila

lila hwtgawm
Image: Giphy

Yes, after all this time, viewers will finally learn why exactly Frank owed Sam enough that he'd kill Lila on his request. "That was always a goal and something we knew we had to answer by the end of the season. Why did Sam have Frank kill Lila?" Nowalk said. "We will be answering that in a way that kind of links a lot of our storylines. We’ll see exactly what that favor is and where it comes from by the last episode."

7. The Hapstall parents' murder mystery will be solved

As fans know, this season originally started off with Annalise and the Keating Five taking on the defense of the Hapstall kids, who were suspects in the murder case of their parents. But things have gotten a lot more complicated since then. In the midseason premiere, Catherine is in court, facing accusations of shooting Annalise and Emily Sinclair (which we know she didn’t do). However, after some master manipulating on Annalise's part, Catherine admits to shooting Annalise — but only after getting drugged by the now-missing Phillip. Thanks to her (false) confession, Catherine is able to strike a plea bargain, only getting five years in a minimum-security prison in exchange for her testimony against Phillip.

But while Phillip might be getting fingered as the culprit by Annalise and her gang, that doesn't mean he actually is the real murderer. So who did kill the Hapstall parents? "Right now, the world thinks that Phillip did it and maybe Catherine was involved in some way," Nowalk teased. "So we’ll reveal whether that’s true."

Clearly, fans are in for a whole lot of jaw-dropping revelations in the coming weeks (and in true HTGAWM fashion, probably just as many more questions).

How to Get Away with Murder airs at 10/9c on Thursday nights on ABC.

Amid grim stories of Syrian refugees, some rays of hope emerge

There is some good news amidst what's being called the worst humanitarian crisis of our age. Many Syrian refugees are getting a warm welcome in Canada. Take a look at some of these inspiring stories that highlight the resilience of these refugees as they start over in an unfamiliar country:

Community groups welcoming refugees

Welcome PEI

Welcome PEI

PEI has attracted several Syrian refugees with the hope that they'll choose to stay to bump up the island's population — 128 refugees have arrived in PEI since November. According to the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada, these refugees are successfully integrating into the community: "The kids are getting into school, the parents are starting their English classes at the English schools, and I would say the resettlement process is going very well at this point," Craig Mackie, the association's executive director, told CBC News. The association works with the provincial government to welcome refugees through The Welcome Project, coordinating donations and helping newcomers get to know their new communities.

Gay Syrian refugees finding freedom in Canada

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, single men who identify as gay, bisexual or transgender are among the most vulnerable if they remain in Syria. This couldn't be more true for 32-year-old Syrian refugee Rasheed, who left his country following homophobic threats from police. He tells The Star that police beat him and blindfolded him, saying things like, “‘We’re going to castrate you... We’re going to rape you. You’ll never see this world again.'" He's adjusting well to life in Toronto, where he finds people are much more open-minded about his sexuality: “I find it very respectful,” Rasheed said. “Whenever I say I’m gay, or whenever I go to gay places, in the society itself, they respect you for being gay.”

Teen refugees overcoming trauma in Canada

A program working to help teenage refugees from Syria in Burnaby, BC, Body Worlds and the Brain, is using unconventional methods to help Syrian youth overcome traumatic experiences, eschewing counselling for activities like rope climbing and kung fu. "We're approaching trauma with play," settlement worker Haval Ahmad tells CBC. This program is crucial because these youths have had experiences that Canadian kids can't even fathom — many have experienced bombings and bloodshed first-hand. "The impact is huge," said Ahmad.

Refugees welcomed with flowers and gifts at airport

Right to refuge

Right to refuge

In Thunder Bay, Ontario, a refugee family was recently shocked and pleased to find a welcoming party waiting for them at the airport. Thunder Bay's Right to Refuge group from the Grassroots Church greeted Nassim Al Kweyder, his wife and their four children with flowers, a teddy bear and signs with welcoming messages in both Arabic and English. "They're amazed," Al Kweyder told CBC News using a translator. "They did not expect any of this, and they're very surprised, and they're thankful that they're in Thunder Bay, surrounded with all these nice people."

Syrian refugees opening new businesses

People across the globe were shocked and saddened by the death of Alan Kurdi, the toddler whose lifeless body, photographed on a beach, made headlines everywhere. But Canadians were happy to hear his extended family has settled into a new life in British Columbia. The Kurdis recently opened a new hair salon, which received warm support from the community. Alan's aunt, Tima Kurdi, worked with her community to sponsor her brother Mohammad, his wife and five children to come to BC. Tima told CBC that the family was overwhelmed by all the positive support from Canadians during this difficult time in their lives.

In Calgary, organizers and volunteers with the Syrian Refugees Support Group were overwhelmed by the number of donations they received from locals at a donation drive before Christmas. "The treatment from the Canadian people and all the welcome — it is overwhelming," refugee George Nachef told CBC News through his brother, who translated. "I feel like home here," he said.

Multiple outlets are reporting that The Hunger Games actress Lawrence will donate $2 million to the Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville, her hometown.

Lawrence has visited sick kids at the hospital, most recently in December, when she paid a holiday visit.

News outlets report that her gift is specifically for the hospital's children's heart center. Photos on Twitter show Lawrence's mom revealing a rendering of a new cardiac intensive care unit that will be named after Lawrence.

Social media lit up Friday afternoon with praise for Lawrence's actions.

"god bless jennifer lawrence," one user wrote. Another tweeted, "On behalf of a parent of a child with #CHD I applaud Jennifer Lawrence for her donation."

Khloé Kardashian slams speculation about relationship with Lamar Odom

0

Kardashian has stuck by Odom's side through thick and thin, even after making a legal move to end their marriage — when the poop hit the fan and Odom OD'd in Vegas, his almost-ex-wife was one of the first by his side. She has stayed there ever since.

Now, hot on the heels of her relationship with basketball star James Harden officially ending after months of speculation, Kardashian and Odom are spotted looking super chill and happy together at West's New York Fashion Week showing — and people absolutely cannot handle it.

Commentary ran the gamut from speculation that the pair is rekindling their romance to the whole thing being nothing more than another Kardashian publicity stunt to keep their name in the papers.

And guess what? Girlfriend is not having it.

Kardashian went off on social media today, criticizing those who would question that there is any motive besides love and friendship behind the pair's obvious amity.

For real. People just really loved this pair together. Odom's addiction led him down a very dark path, for sure, and we can't imagine the pain Kardashian went through while dealing with the cheating and the lying. But Odom was always presented as a happy-go-lucky, loving character on Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and the love they shared — even if it was presented on television — was obviously very real. Kardashian never seemed as wildly happy as she did when things were good between her and Odom, and people just want her to have the happy ending she deserves — they just think it should be with Odom.

But at the end of the day, only she can decide what's best for her, and only Odom can get himself right.

10 tips for finding budget-friendly fashion trends

0
0

1. Polish up

One of the easiest ways to upgrade and add some spice to your style while on a budget is to change your nail lacquer. It’s something that’s inexpensive and can be done instantly. For a more elegant look, go for a soft pastel or nude shade. If you're aiming for more of a grunge or rock look for a night out on the town, try a black or dark blue. It looks great on every skin tone!

2. Score designer discounts

Let’s face it: Though we're on a budget, there still may be a desire for some great designer pieces. The good news is you don’t have to break the bank to do so. Places like Saks Off 5th or the online store Trendlee are great places to find designer goods marked down — tremendously.

3. Shop smart

Buying can be fun even when you're watching your money. I love scoring my next fashion finds at places like Zara, H&M and Topshop, which have a variety of quality clothing picks. Many times these stores will have designer-inspired pieces that will keep you right in trend without breaking the bank.

4. Buy versatile clothing

Shop for items that can go with anything. Things like a black leather jacket, jeans, black slacks and staple pencil skirts are items that are interchangeable and can make a whole new outfit when mixed and matched. Great places to get staple items for your wardrobe are Express and Gap.

More: How to take a denim skirt from day to night

5. Mix and match

One of the best ways to look like a million bucks without spending it is to mix high- and low-cost pieces. This means having at least one great-quality piece — designer or not — and pairing it with lower-priced items. For example, you could take a designer item like a Gucci bucket bag and pair it with a budget-friendly chiffon dress — here's one under $30! — to achieve a super feminine, posh look.

6. Have a closet sale

Take some time to go through your closet and analyze what you need more of, what you dislike or pick out things that don’t fit. I know this feeling all too well, as it can be hard to let go of certain items because of the attachment to them — things like a sweater from a friend or jeans you hope to fit back into after losing those 15 pounds. It’s time to just let it go and make space for the new. Places like Plato’s Closet sell your used clothes for cash. Another, Poshmark, allows you to sell your clothes right from your phone. With this site, I have found you are able to get more cash for your used items, especially for higher-end pieces. Either way, both are great for getting additional income to shop for things you need in your wardrobe.

7. Use discount codes

Don’t be afraid to use discount codes when shopping online or in the store. Retail Me Not is an amazing site that allows you to search current coupon codes. You can also Google discounts happening at your favorite stores.

8. Sign up for email lists

Take some time to register for email alerts from your favorite retailers. You’ll be first to know about discounts, specials and exclusive offers available only to subscribers.

9. Shop outlet malls

Outlet malls give you a great opportunity to shop some of your favorite stores at a discounted price. Special days, like Black Friday, offer extra savings that make shopping on a budget serious fun.

10. Follow discount and budget blogs

The Budget Babe and Penny Chic are both great blogs to watch for fabulous finds on a budget, with items usually under $100. These trendy shoppers take the frustration out of finding discounted and affordable items by posting links on where to find amazing pieces for your wardrobe.

Broad City's Abbi Jacobson & Ilana Glazer put reporter in place over sexist questions

More: Neon Moon's new lingerie ad celebrates all of our flaws

That's exactly what Broad City stars Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer did when they were interviewed by Playboy about the upcoming third season of the show, presidential candidates and, of course, feminism.

Broad City has been described by some media as being sneak-attack feminism, and that's one of the first things interviewer Eric Spitznagel asked about: "Why are you so sneaky?"

Of course, Jacobson and Glazer, both pretty outspoken feminists, had the perfect response to his pretty misguided question.

"We’re both totally up-front and proud feminists. We’re not being all secretive about it. I feel we’re pretty blatant in our approach," Jacobson said.

Glazer added, "I think it’s kind of crazy that we’re still calling comedians 'female comedians.' That seems more like a sneak attack."

"I mean, sure, if you play the episodes of Broad City backward, there are hidden messages," Jacobson interjected.

Glazer chimed in, "'Diiiie, men.' If you play any Broad City episode backward, that’s all we’re saying."

More: Kanye West is in the wrong for encouraging woman-bashing

As for the assumption that TV viewers apparently make that Broad City is just like Lena Dunham's HBO hit Girls, Jacobson and Glazer had the perfect response once again.

"It’s so weird that that’s a thing... You’ve got the one show about some vaginas," Glazer said, with Jacobson interrupting: "And then there’s that other show with the other talking and walking vaginas."

Glazer continued, "I’m not going to watch two TV shows with vaginas in them unless somebody tells me why they’re different!"

Keep slaying, queens.

RHONJ's Teresa Giudice thinks Donald Trump would be a great president

Real Housewives of New Jersey star Giudice has thrown her support squarely behind one presidential candidate, and we can't say we're surprised.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Giudice told Andy Cohen that she wholeheartedly supports the candidacy of her former Celebrity Apprentice boss, Donald Trump.

"Of course I'm gonna vote for Donald Trump," she told Cohen. "I think he's amazing. I think he'll make a great President."

But Giudice seems to have forgotten about one important detail: She is no longer eligible to vote.

According to New Jersey law, Giudice has at least temporarily lost her right to vote after being convicted of bankruptcy fraud charges and spending 11 months in prison — a felony. Due to the voting laws in her home state, she is ineligible to vote while incarcerated, on parole and on probation, meaning the absolute earliest she can rock the vote is the year 2018.

That is two full years after the next Presidential election this fall.

So while Trump has been endorsed by an unusual mix of celebrities, including Ted Nugent, Tila Tequila and Sarah Palin, he will not be able to count on Giudice's actual vote after all.

The endorsement does not go both ways. Trump did not vote for Giudice during her turn on Celebrity Apprentice, and in fact fired her on episode 12 of her season. That did not sway her opinion.

"I don't think that Mr. Trump fired the right person, but I'm very proud I got this far," she said at the time.

I was so happy with my performance that day, and after reading all the comment cards that the guests had filled out (rating the dishes for lunch and dinner as well as service) I realized that if my team was on top, I was probably going to take the win but even if we were on the bottom there was no way I was going home.

I was so happy that I actually cracked a bottle of champagne after dinner service of Restaurant Wars to celebrate my best performance of the season of Top Chef. Amar and Kwame both pulled me aside separately to congratulate me on for-sure winning Restaurant Wars (if our team was on top).

Then the judges basically did what they always did, tell me I suck but this time they told me to go home too.

So yeah I was pretty surprised.

SK: What was it like working with all of the judges on the show?

PFL: I was surprised to see that the judges really didn't speak to or interact with us until the cameras were rolling. It was cool to see a lot of chefs I know in real life, 'cause when you're shooting and don't get to see a familiar face for months, it's kind of nice to see someone you recognize. So that was kind of cool. But otherwise, yeah they barely make eye contact unless we're filming.

SK: Which contestant do you think deserves to win? Or who are you rooting for?

PFL: I got my money on my roommate, Amar. He's a great cook and they seem to like him.

SK: Who did you consider your biggest competition?

PFL: I always have viewed myself as my biggest competition in these types of situations. More often than not, your demise doesn't stem from being beat, it stems from screwing up and losing, but this time, my biggest competition were the judges, or whoever it is that decides who wins and loses. Because in all my years doing food competitions, this is the first time where I was bewildered by the reaction I would get from the judges. I'd feed 200 people who would rave about the dish and I'd feel super good and proud then the judges would just tell me I sucked. It was really bizarre.

More: Top Chef's best and worst reactions to cheftestant dishes

SK: Was there anyone on the show you really clashed with? Who was it and why?

PFL: I didn't really think so. The rest of the chefs say Tom and Padma hate(d) me, I guess I can see that. But otherwise I got along with everyone. I still talk to and see the rest of the chefs often. I've already done dinners with Jeremy and Kwame at Scratch|Bar & Kitchen, and Kwame and I just cooked with Chad in Spokane last week. I love all of the chefs.

SK: Who is your favorite out of the judges and why?

PFL: Richard Blais, maybe it's because he's been in our shoes, but he actually seems to respect what it is we do and what we go through. I never found him to speak down his nose at any of us and he seems to appreciate outside-of-the-box thought.

SK: Who do you think deserved to go home on last night's episode?

PFL: I thought our team did fantastic, so I thought someone from Pallete deserved to go ;)

But... If it had to be someone from our team and this is based purely on performance and on customer feedback (all the guests filled out comment cards rating our dishes that specific day), it was pretty clear that it should have been Jeremy. Sorry dude. I love you, but lunch didn't finish because he refused to let us cook for anyone aside from the judges, his steaks were repeatedly sent back for being under and the judges said his risotto was the worst risotto in the history of Top Chef.

SK: What was the best experience you had on the show?

PFL: Having Jose Andreas tell me that my dish was "Surf and Turf at its absolute finest, bravo."

More: Top Chef: Where are they now?

SK: What was the biggest challenge for you on the show?

PFL: Knowing that no matter how hard I would try or how good I would cook, I was not going to win.

Were you glad to see Phillip Frankland Lee finally leave the show?

Queen Elizabeth gives Kate Middleton her most public endorsement yet

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, is scheduled to give her first official television interview since she and Prince William sat down to discuss their engagement in 2010: She will appear as part of a two-hour documentary celebrating her grandmother-in-law's 90th birthday.

More: Prince William teases Kate Middleton over 'embarrassing' flirting (VIDEO)

The really cool part of that is that the queen herself personally approved of Kate's appearance, which can mean only one thing: The top Royal has thrown her support fully behind the woman who will one day wear all her fabulous tiaras.

"The queen thinks Kate is doing a great job as a young mum and is a wonderful wife to William," a courtier told Closer Weekly magazine.

The Queen is said to be particularly impressed with the way Kate has managed to successfully balance her life as a young mother with her responsibilities as a working Royal. In addition, it has become increasingly clear that the younger generation — including William, Prince Harry and Kate — are integral to keeping public opinion of the Royals high, and she knows the stunning brunette will cause younger viewers to tune in to the special in droves.

"She wants younger viewers in particular to learn more about her work over the best part of 70 years," says the courtier. "To be blunt, the queen wants some of Kate's stardust to rub off on her!"

"When Kate speaks, people listen," the courtier told Closer. "The queen knows that she will boost ratings."

While we think Queen Elizabeth has plenty of star power in her own right, there is much to be said about the point of Kate bringing in more viewers, if only because of the rarity of such an interview.

Why it is possible to date someone with different political views

0
0

The months before November are filled with debates, political articles and discussions about the political scene. Upon thinking about all the dating ups and downs that singles go through, I thought "why not throw in some politics" and decided to literally delve into the question of whether the difference between two people on a date with different political affiliations can pan out or cause tension? What does it look like with a donkey and an elephant on a date? Can people with two different political ideologies find a compromise and succeed in creating a relationship, or do birds of a feather flock together?

More: Why even small lies on your online dating profile mean big trouble

A recent survey by Match.com looked at some of the political affiliations related to dating. First off, it says that the largest group of singles were, "Democrats with 40 percent, Republicans at 19 percent, independents 15 percent and Libertarians 2 percent.” Their findings also noted that it was OK to talk politics on a date. So, if politics are no longer taboo, how can daters navigate this territory and still end up with a second date?

A study by Dr. Helen Fisher, PhD discusses the differences between what Republicans and Democrats seek in their significant others. "We found that significantly more conservative Republicans singles say they must have someone of the same religious and ethnic background, someone with the same values and attitudes about money, and someone who wants to marry. Liberal Democrat singles, on the other hand, must have someone with a sense of humor and who has a life of their own, someone who can communicate their wants and needs, someone comfortable with their own sexuality and with the same level of education and someone who respects them. And while conservative Republicans are turned off by a date 'with strong opinions,' this trait turns a liberal Democrat on.” So, that gives us some information to delve into, from a sample of 5000 singles.

More: Why technology might actually be making dating worse

Depending on if you lean red or blue, your beliefs in politics might be an interesting discussion on a date with someone who believes differently. Being able to have a talk where two people don’t necessarily agree on everything can be exciting and insightful. The differences between daters or those in a relationship do not mean that this couple is doomed. If the two can listen and validate the other’s opinion and feelings, half the battle is over.

According to an article by Drake Baer, conflict between couples is useful for growth and a well-rounded connection. John Gottman’s research tells us that there are four components to getting good at these uncomfortable conversations: putting your emotions into words, asking open-ended questions, making open-ended statements and empathizing with your partner.

Being able to go on a date or be in a relationship with someone with different opinions or politics is not a recipe for disaster. Clearly, the research tells us that the objective in having differing views is about the way you discuss it and listen to the other person. There might be fundamental beliefs that two people cannot move on from, but then this is not the right match for you if you can’t respect the differences.

Having healthy conflict and problem resolution skills is something that anyone can learn. Communication can be built upon. A couple can enter couple’s therapy to help build the connection between them. So remember, just because you find yourself on a date with someone with different political views does not mean that you should not try and find common ground. It’s not the differences that break up the relationship — it’s the way they are dealt with.

Democrats and Republicans can have harmonious dates after all.

The way you lean in for a smooch may indicate your true feelings

0
0

Chalk it up to cultural or generational differences, but I was not prepared for that lip-lock. (OK, OK, more of a lip-brush.) Ever since then, I've paid close attention to how people who lip-kiss hello or goodbye go about it. And I'm not the only one fascinated. This idea of how adults kiss — whether it's a lover, a child, a parent or a friend — is the subject of a new study published in the journal Laterality.

More: New service helps you break up with your sig-o on Valentine's Day

Scientists scoured the Net for pictures of people locking lips (good gig if you can get it!) and analyzed the smooches in context of the people's relationships. They discovered that regardless of gender, culture or even age, there is one major similarity: The direction people turn when they kiss indicates their feelings about the person.

Kissing an acquaintance, friend or family member? Lean to the left. Kissing someone you're romantically interested in? Lean in to the right. (And if you try to kiss someone straight on, then you're a psychopath. Kidding. Sort of. Either you have no spatial awareness or no respect for other people's noses.)

More: 100 Romantic ways to show your love with simple gestures that mean a lot

Often if you're comfortable enough to kiss someone hello, you're already well aware of the nature of the relationship. But if you're unattached and hoping for a love connection, this one little physical sign can give you a clue as to your date's true feelings. A kiss good night coming toward your right (meaning they're turning to the left) likely means they're just being polite. But if it lands from your left, there may be a second date in your future.

A good example would be the stock photo at the top of this article. It may seem like a super-romantic beach kiss, but they're both leaning to the left — likely because they're actors paid to pose like that and aren't really in love with each other! Who says there's no truth in advertising?

More: Why being married to your best friend is awesome

The researchers think this phenomenon has to do with the reward systems in our brains. As infants we're often cradled in our parents' left arms, and so moving left feels more natural for close, platonic relationships. But leaning right activates the reward system in our brains associated with romantic love.

Clearly this isn't an exact science, so I say you should do a little field research of your own! (Except maybe not on your mother-in-law.)

The Walking Dead's Lauren Cohan sobs over the death of a beloved character

As Maggie Greene on the hit AMC series, Cohan may be able to kick some zombie a** — but, appearing on a special edition of Inside the Actors Studio, she couldn't fight off her emotions.

More: Lauren Cohan discusses her new role and why she embraces being 'complicated'

It became clear Cohan was struggling to keep her composure when a clip began playing of her character with her onscreen father, the now deceased Hershel Greene (Scott Wilson). As the video cued up, Cohan closed her eyes, put her fingers in her ears and tried to hold onto her cool.

Spoiler alert: It didn't work. When host James Lipton asked about the measures she was taking to block out the clip, Cohan admitted "I'm trying to do all these breathing exercises, because when I found out we were going to come on your show, the first thing I promised myself was I wasn't going to cry."

And with that, she couldn't hold it in any longer.

"I covered my ears because this is one of my favorite moments on the show for more reasons than I have fingers and toes," she explained through tears. "I just love Scott so much," she added, confirming that it's always "hard to lose the people that we've lost."

Which is, in a weird way, good to hear. You obviously suspect and hope the stars share a genuine closeness. As a fan, you get so emotionally invested in these characters that you feel the loss when someone leaves the show. So it's validating in a way to know the stars of the show experience the losses right along with you (on a much more personal level, obviously).

More: Steven Yeun reveals why The Walking Dead trolled its fans

During the special, Cohan — who appeared alongside fellow cast members, show creator Robert Kirkman and showrunner Scott Gimple — revealed the decidedly non-glamorous way she auditioned for her role as Maggie.

She read for the part, she said, "in this tiny room in my parents' house." What's more, she had never watched the show prior to auditioning for it. It wasn't until she made the journey from England to America that she binged as part of her research.

"I watched the show on the plane over here, the first season, and I got here and thought, 'Oh, don't screw this up. This is really good,'" she said.

Obviously, she didn't screw it up and has gone on to become one of the most beloved characters in the series — and should anything ever happen to Maggie, Cohan certainly won't be the only one crying.

7 things to know about Johnny Depp's band, Hollywood Vampires

The announcement that the legendary combo of Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper and Joe Perry will be making its television debut at the Grammy ceremony on Monday night has left us asking, "How the heck haven't we heard more about this band before?"

Here's what you need to know about Hollywood Vampires.

1. They were founded to honor rock history

The original Hollywood Vampires were a group started by Cooper in the '70s. Though the OG vampires were comprised of rock 'n roll royalty such as Cooper, Keith Moon, Harry Nilsson and sometimes John Lennon and Ringo Star, their goal was not to make music. Instead the '70s version of Hollywood Vampires liked to hang out and drink. Cooper started the new Hollywood Vampires to pay homage to his buddies that had all met untimely deaths back in the day. There's even a song on their self-titled album called "My Dead Drunk Friends."

"These are historical characters," Cooper told Rolling Stone of his fallen comrades. "When you're talking about a John Lennon, that goes beyond being a guy you drank with and into Abraham Lincoln. You're over the sadness of it, and you're now going, 'All right, if John were here, what would he do?'"

2. They've already been playing shows for a while

Depp, Cooper and Perry have played a handful of shows in Hollywood and also hit the stage for Rock in Rio last fall. Though the the group didn't officially form until 2015, the guys have been messing around on stage together as far back as 2011, like in the video below.

"It’s gonna be a matter of schedules," Perry answered when asked if Hollywood Vampires could do a large-scale tour, according to radio.com. "Johnny’s schedule runs differently than ours. He has to promote [his films]. He has some movies coming out that are really good."

Smart vibrator will send you data on your orgasms

0
0

However, a vibrator has come along that could change all that. It's called the Lioness, and boy does it sound like it lives up to the name. Not only is it a powerful vibrator, but it can teach you a great deal about your body's sexual response using five advanced sensors that reside inside.

More: The evolution of vibrators as a milestone of female empowerment

The Lioness is the brainchild of CEO and co-founder Liz Klinger. She and her team developed it at SkyDeck, UC Berkeley’s incubator for startups. Klinger told Berkeley she was inspired to create the vibrator because of her conservative upbringing. “I grew up in a more conservative family from the Midwest, and we never talked about sex,” says Klinger. “And because I wasn’t able to ask questions early on, it only made me more curious to learn more about what was out there.”

Klinger's story is unfortunately a common one. Most women learn about their sexual response through exploration with sexual partners — not on their own. In the throes of sexual activity with someone else, it's difficult to stop and take stock of how you're feeling and responding. And once you've had sex a few times, it's even harder to ask questions, because no one wants to come across as inexperienced. Thus Klinger thought it would be good for women to have a tool that would not only give them pleasure but that would teach them a lot that they probably didn't know about themselves.

More: I learned the art of awesome orgasms from a virtual vagina, and so can you

Klinger actually worked passion parties (those fun gatherings where you can find out about the newest sex toys on the market) to get a sense of how versed women were in their orgasms. She found that so many had questions they'd kept inside because they were embarrassed. “It affects their lives — their stress levels, their relationships — and that there wasn’t anything that was addressing that, I wanted to do something about that,” Klinger told Berkeley.

So how does it work, you ask? While in use, the five sensors record what's happening inside your vagina, from contractions to temperature to movement. That data is then uploaded to your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth, where you can access it. Over time, you should start to see patterns in how you react to sexual stimulation depending on your mood, time of the month or stress level. It really is like a fitness tracker for your vagina — you're learning your rhythms so you can improve your sexual health over time. Here's a helpful video on the design and functionality of the Lioness by the lovely CEO.

The Lioness

The Lioness

Pretty cool, right? Aside from teaching you how to pleasure yourself, it's also a great way to open up a dialogue between you and your partner if you've been having sex-related issues. It will help them understand what's actually going on inside you so they can figure out the most effective way to get you off.

High street giant launches range of clothes for kids with special needs

More: Don't be afraid to invite the kids with special needs to that birthday party

Caleb Kutt from Ossett in West Yorkshire has dystonic quadriparesis cerebral palsy, which means he is unable to sit, stand or walk, and has little control of his head. He also has epilepsy and a condition which has no official name but is known as 15q 112 microdeletion, which has caused developmental delays.

After Caleb’s mother Zoe Hardcastle struggled to source clothes to fit her young son, who still wears nappies and is fed through a tube in his stomach, his grandmother Rita Kutt decided to approach M&S for help.

And the retailer has now created bodysuits in a range of colours for children who have special needs like Caleb, reported the Wakefield Express.

More: 15 Gifts to help parents of kids with special needs

The pink and blue striped short sleeve sleep suit without feet (£6; available in sizes for 3 - 8 years) is sold out in several sizes already, proving that there is definitely a gap in the market for this type of kids' clothing.

To help promote the range, Rita has set up her own Facebook group, M&S and Me: Special Needs Clothing For Children, which has had more than 30,000 shares."We are delighted," Rita told the Wakefield Express. "The clothes which are suitable for Caleb are sold by smaller retailers but cost up to £12 each for a vest, which is expensive for any family. M&S will sell the items at between £3 and £7 which will make a huge difference."

"We always listen carefully to our customers and our Kidswear team worked in close consultation with the customer and other families on adapting some of our Kidswear products to meet their needs," a spokesperson from M&S told the Daily Mail.

The Amazing Race: Has social media popularity already decided the winner?

Being dubbed the #OffTheGrid season, with a cast full of social media influencers, it is out to prove just how much the digital age has changed the way people are connected. Phil Keoghan told The Hollywood Reporter, "It’s like a giant social experiment."

The season premiere was doubly different in that, not only is the audience familiar with the teams already from their various social platforms, but also in that they began the race from their homes, setting out in search of the Monument to the Revolution in Mexico City, Mexico.

More: The Amazing Race: 5 reasons this might be the worst season ever

As the teams converged in Mexico City, they were tasked with detours that included either building a tort (or bull) out of fireworks and lighting it ablaze or picking out the fake mariachi band member out of 100 mariachi players.

The first detours had most of the teams fairly evenly matched, but it was clear from social media that there was an overwhelming favorite to win the whole thing already running well out front: Team Tyler and Korey.

The YouTube sensation duo, Tyler Oakley and Korey Kuhl, ended up finishing second for the episode, behind other Twitter favorites, The Dancers, Dana Borriello and Matt Steffanina. The pair impressed even themselves by how well they built their firecracker bull. At one point you saw Oakley stand back and with admiration of their craftiness say, "It looks pretty good!"

Twitter was awash with fans of the show and fans of Tyler and Korey, so much so that #TeamTylerAndKorey began trending only halfway through the episode.

If their strong performance and clear fan strength is any indication of things to come, it looks like it will be Oakley and Kuhl’s game to lose.

Coming in last in the premiere episode (but not being eliminated as it was a non-elimination leg) was the father-daughter team of Scott and Blair Fowler. Daughter Blair is a YouTube sensation, having started posting fashion and beauty videos at the young age of 14 and amassing almost 1.5 million subscribers. The two hit major roadblocks when Scott struggled to finish the last detour.

It will be interesting to see if Oakely and Kuhl can stay as calm, cool and collected as the game continues — and the stakes get higher!
