6 Tips for perfect buttercream frosting

The Robicellis are a husband-and-wife team of cupcake gurus and owners of the famous Robicelli's Bakery in Brooklyn, New York. They're also the co-authors of Robicelli's: A Love Story, with Cupcakes, which, in addition to featuring 50 grown-up recipes for their favorite cupcakes, features sometimes sentimental, sometimes funny and always entertaining stories about their lives, their love and their insights. I'm also fairly certain it's the only cupcake cookbook featuring cursing and buttercream recipes in the form of hilarious comic strips. As you might imagine, they're expert buttercream makers. As you might not have imagined, they're more than glad to share their buttercream ninjutsu skills with the whole world.

French or American?

There are actually two kinds of buttercream: French and American. The Robicellis use French, but it's very labor-intensive and can be unstable in hot weather. So they've developed what must be the world's most superior American buttercream recipe, which we include here. If you think American buttercream is too sweet, this is for sure the recipe for you. If you do want to try their French buttercream recipe, I recommend checking out their book (actually, I recommend that regardless).

1. Splurge on ingredients

Remember, there aren't that many ingredients in buttercream, so what you put into it really does matter. High-quality butter is especially a must, since that's where a majority of your flavor comes from. In fact, Allison says she wouldn't shy away from the more intense flavors of European (cultured) butter just because it's "American" buttercream. According to Allison, "Since we're using butter in our frostings in its raw form, the flavor of the cultured butter will really shine through." She does caution that if you choose European butter, you should taste for richness as you go, as European butter has a slightly higher fat content.

2. The great buttercream controversy: Shortening

Overall, Allison thinks you should avoid using shortening for frosting because it doesn't taste good at all. That said, even the Robicellis have to rely on it occasionally for outdoor events because it's more stable in higher temperatures than butter is. In that case, they substitute no more than 30 percent of the butter for shortening. Sometimes you really do have to consider factors other than flavor, so don't feel guilty if you do use it, but maybe try it without once too.

3. Add sugar slowly, and taste as you go

You probably know you should add the powdered sugar slowly. You don't want to have an I Love Lucy moment with your stand mixer. But you should also taste as you go to ensure you aren't adding too much. Subtle differences in ingredients can make a slight change to how much of any ingredient you might need.

4. Add mascarpone cheese

It's hard to not freak when you see the amount of powdered sugar in buttercream recipes. That stuff is sa-weet! But the Robicellis have figured out the perfect way to get the right balance of sweetness and depth without that cloying flavor: mascarpone cheese.

You had to know they were going to sneak in some fancy foreign ingredient somewhere, right? Professional bakers are well known for their sneakiness (no… I made that up). But I think you should hear them out here. There's actually a very good reason for it.

"Mascarpone will keep it very rich tasting, as it tastes like a solid version of cream," Allison says. "What it does is cut the sweetness of the frosting, making it taste more luxurious than cloying." There's already heavy cream in many buttercream recipes. Using mascarpone is just using a solid version of it. If you can't find mascarpone, you can just substitute with more butter.

5. How to make it pretty (a note on food coloring)

If you check out the Robicellis' cookbook carefully, you'll start to notice that most are, well, cream colored. Any that do have color come by their hue through added natural ingredients like strawberries.

As Allison points out, "I would never make a roast chicken blue because it was my favorite color, so why a cake?" She goes on to explain, "We try to put [the focus] on flavors and textures, decorating the cupcakes with things like nut brittles, fresh fruit compotes and homemade candy."

That said, sometimes food coloring is just a must. The Robicellis know that sometimes you have to have cupcakes that, say, perfectly match the exact shade of green on Princess Tiana's dress. Far be it for her to destroy your little one's dreams of princess party perfection! When that's the case, Allison recommends gel food colorings. You can find them at baking and craft stores, and they're much more consistent in color, so you use a lot less (since the ones you buy at the grocery store are so watery).

5. Whip it till it hurts

Allison wants you to know that it's all about the air. In the comic strip version of the recipe, the exact words are, "Beat the f*** out of that shit!!! Beat it like we beat the Russians in Rocky IV!" Allison explained what that means: "It's all about beating well and incorporating enough air till it's very fluffy, but not so much that you end up melting it. Best way to find this point is the old-fashioned way: Taste as you go. When it feels light like whipped cream, nearly melts on the tongue and doesn't feel so heavy like something that will sit in your stomach for days, you know you're good."

6. Help! My buttercream broke!

Just like a hollandaise or mayo, buttercream can break. Allison explains that it's because the emulsion of butter has separated into fat and water. But if you beat it until you break it, all is not lost. Allison shared some tips for those with buttercream disasters.

Put the frosting in the refrigerator, and allow it to harden for a bit, then beat it again on high speed until it comes together.

Continue beating while adding a little bit more butter, tiny pieces at a time.

Worse comes to worst? Frost the cupcakes anyway, then coat the whole shebang with crumbled-up cookies or chopped nuts. No one will know!

Robicelli's basic American buttercream frosting recipe

If you can't find mascarpone, just replace it with 8 ounces of butter.

Yields 24 cupcakes' worth of frosting

Total time: 5 – 10 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 3 sticks (1-1/2 cups) unsalted butter
  • 8 ounces mascarpone
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (plus more for thinning, if necessary)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Directions:

  1. With a hand or stand mixer, beat the butter, mascarpone and heavy cream until it becomes fluffy.
  2. Add the powdered sugar 1/4 cup at a time. Taste the frosting frequently to ensure you're not adding too much.
  3. Once it's all incorporated, increase the mixer speed to high, and beat it until it's fluffy and light. Taste. If it seems heavy, you can add a little extra heavy cream a little at a time to thin it.
  4. Scream "'Merca!" because you now have the perfect American buttercream.

More: Sofía Vergara stands up to advertisers who stole her photo

In an incredibly candid new interview with The Edit magazine, Modern Family actress Vergara opened up about her massive boobs, her aging body and what the future holds for her and her new hubby Joe Manganiello, including whether a second baby is in the cards for the couple.

"I wouldn't mind another child," she shared. "My husband is younger than me and he wants kids, so we’re trying to figure out what we’re going to do. The idea of doing it all again doesn’t scare me but, hey, it’s not like it’s going to happen naturally, is it?"

Speaking of natural, Vergara mentioned how her huge boobs are likely to need surgery soon.

"People will often say that I wear the same thing on the red carpet, but I know my body: it's very voluptuous and I’ve got the boobs of a stripper," she said. "They’re a 32DDD and because they’re real, they’re everywhere, so I need my dresses to have structure — and under-armor. There is so much going on under my dresses that I bleed at the end of award ceremonies."

More: Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello got intimate on their honeymoon (PHOTOS)

She continued, "In 10 years, I think it would be good to have a reduction. I don't think it's even going to be an option not to, because I'm going to start having back pains. I wouldn't make them too small — just enough that I don't end up looking like an old stripper."

Though we can't imagine Vergara aging in any way other than gracefully, she doesn't seem to agree.

"Watching myself age on screen is awful!" she said. "There is nothing more disturbing than watching an episode of Modern Family from the first season, then one from seven years later, but what can I do?"

Former The Real Housewives of Atlanta star Zolciak is often accused of Photoshopping her Instagram photos of her tiny waist, and this is far from the first time she has gone off on the haters, but this particular rant is especially vicious. It is obvious that Zolciak has had enough — and we can't say we blame her.

Zolciak is on what looks like the world's most relaxing beach vacation with her husband and kids, and since it's the beach, she is rockin' a teeny-weeny bikini. She looks incredible — especially considering the woman has six kids — so of course she is being accused of Photoshopping her body yet again.

Logan's Gilmore Girls return could mean an engagement for Rory

More: 8 Details about the Gilmore Girls revival that'll get fans excited

As Gilmore Girls fans recall, near the end of Season 7, Rory turned down Logan's proposal. He then jetted off to California, where he accepted a job offer. At the time, it was the right choice for Rory, who was making a career for herself and looking to the future. However, things really didn't end well between the two, who were together for two seasons. I think it's safe to say that their reunion is probably going to be quite awkward.

That said, and even though eight years have passed since the final episode, I assume neither of them has kept in touch. Will they randomly run into each other? Will they mutually decide to meet up after all these years? Will Logan return to Stars Hollow after hearing about Richard's passing? The options are endless.

There is probably one question fans are thinking about now that Logan is returning, and that is, "Will Logan and Rory end up together?" Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino told TV Line that Rory is "single in the sense that she’s not married. But she’s dating like any young woman with that face would be."

More: Gilmore Girls: 6 Things we know so far about the revival

Well, if Rory is dating, she could easily fall back in love with any of her suitors, including Logan. Or maybe she'll find her way back into love with Jess or Dean (if either of them returns). Or she might choose someone completely different. Or maybe she'll remain single.

At this point, so much is unknown when it comes to Rory's love life and Logan's return (it's still unclear how many episodes he'll appear in), but I'm sure Logan and Rory shippers are hoping they finally get engaged.

In a teaser for Monday's episode of The Bachelor, we see Higgins pull aside Olivia Caridi for a little conversation; she's been making enemies among the other girls thanks to her manipulative behavior and snide comments, and some of the other ladies even felt so strongly about her that they decided to share their true feelings about her with Higgins.

But just when you think things are going down with Caridi and Higgins, (one woman even exclaims, "She's going down,") something completely unexpected happens.

The video claims that the upcoming episode will be "The! Most! Dramatic! Sorry, but what just happened?

20 Crazy ways we show love to our kids

We do things for our kids that would be considered totally weird and strange if we did them for anyone else, but for us they're just another part of the life of being a parent. Here are a few of the many crazy ways parents show their love for their kids.

More: 11 Free things people give kids that drive moms up a wall

1. When you come across another adult who's sick, you keep a healthy distance lest you too start sneezing. But when your child is ill, you let them snuggle up against you even though you know it means you're sentencing yourself to the same stomach bug.

2. You let your child have the last slice of pizza even though you've been dreaming all day about pepperoni.

3. You hold it until your bladder is about burst because you don't want to risk waking the sleeping baby in your arms.

4. When your baby gets constipated, you aren't afraid to pull on a pair of gloves and take matters into your own hands.

5. You do what it takes to get your toddler to eat — even if that means pre-chewing their food.

6. You do serial killer-esque things like save lost teeth and locks of hair because you can't bear to let go of a single bit of your child.

7. No parent wants their child to be uncomfortable in a soiled diaper, which is why you don't think twice about sniffing a butt in public.

8. You spend hours in stores or online in the quest to find the one gift that will make their birthday extra special.

9. You don't even like to shake hands with strangers, but you let your kids use you as a human tissue.

10. If your breastfeeding baby requires it, you'll give up delicious foods like spicy tacos and cheese, all in the name of love.

11. Keeping a stash of singles on hand and taking the risk of waking your child up in the middle of the night seems crazy, but it's what you do to keep the joy of the Tooth Fairy alive.

12. Whether it's a costume for the school play or cupcakes for the bake sale, if it's important to them, you'll stay up until dawn to make sure it gets done.

13. If there's no time to get to a bathroom or trash can, you'll catch vomit with your bare hands rather than have it get all over your kid.

More: I use TV as a babysitter, and my kids are just fine

14. You check under beds, in closets and behind doors carefully each night under their watchful eye even though you know there's no such thing as monsters.

15. You can't remember the capitals of all 50 states, but you've memorized every song from every episode of their favorite cartoon, because singing them together makes your child happy.

16. You may bemoan teens for spending too much time on Instagram, but you spend hours looking at photos and videos of your kids after they fall asleep.

17. Five words: the Elf on the Shelf.

18. You'll wake up an extra hour early to put together a bento lunchbox in hopes that it brings a smile to their face during the day.

19. You'll wear a feather boa and tiara to the store, because your child wanted to play dress-up.

20. You show up hours early with a tripod, camera, GoPro, iPhone and an iPad — all to capture a two-minute-and-37-second-long ballet dance.

Messer, who dated T.R. Dues for nine months and quickly moved him into her house, got tongues wagging last week when she tweeted about being a single mom.

While to most the phrase "single mom" simply means unmarried, people started talking that Messer had dumped Dues — and in fact, she told friends last month that the couple was done.

"Leah said they broke up a little while ago," a source told Radar Online. "She said it just didn't work out. He wasn't a good boyfriend."

Others said the couple was still living together and that Messer was just trying to put on a show for the judge in her contentious custody case.

"Leah knows it doesn't look good for her to have a new man in the house already," another source revealed. "She wants to look like a stable single mom to the judge in order for her to get her girls back."

But now Dues is confirming the breakup.

"If she says she's single, then she's single," Dues told Radar Online, adding that they live in different homes. "I just see her every now and then."

If the breakup was a calculated move, it worked. Messer and her ex, Corey Simms, resolved their custody battle last week, agreeing to share custody of their daughters.

"Both sides are very happy with the new plan," a source said.

Woman’s Instagram pics removed by boss who claimed she was too big to model

Sherene Zarrabi, a 21-year-old college student in Oklahoma, was just doing what lots of young women love to do — snapping pics of herself in cute outfits and posting them to Instagram. As a bonus, she worked at the Dainty Hooligan, a boutique clothing store found in the South, and so had access to all the latest fashions. Her manager loved Zarrabi's snaps so much she posted some of them to the store's own Insta.

But her stint as an unofficial spokesmodel quickly ended — and in the most humiliating way possible. Store owner Jessica Issler yanked the pictures and sent this email to Zarrabi and her manager:

"Something I want to make sure you keep in mind. I want size small, the stereotypical 'model' to model our clothes. Please use our pictures of our models if Stillwater store can't find someone who would be considered 'model material.' This is not to put anyone down but to communicate expectations of presenting our brand. Don't take it personal, all I ask for is really good representation. In exchange for the freedom, I ask you to take down all pictures of anyone that doesn't fit the criteria."

Zarrabi rightly took exception to this and quit. But instead of going on a crash diet or crying over her "not model" body, she showed confidence and courage, explaining her feelings on Facebook:

"I am fully comfortable with who I am and the way I look. I have recently been attacked and discriminated against by the owner of Dainty Hooligan. She went on our stores Instagram and deleted all of the pictures where I was modeling the clothing and then sent this email to my manager. I do not want to represent or support a business that has such archaic values and beliefs. THIS is the reason young girls have body image issues. This is disgusting. I quit immediately and I suggest that my friends and family do not support Dainty Hooligan. Love yourself, no matter what you look like."

Her honest response struck a nerve, and women everywhere celebrated her body positivity and unwillingness to take any crap.

Issler, on the other hand, doubled down on her policy, saying, "I'm not apologizing for the unsaid fashion rule." Then she added in an interview with O'Colly, the Oklahoma State University paper, "My No. 1 priority is the safety of my staff, so the evil and lack of positivity is terrifying. This girl has now created a hostile work environment because she has a sad body image of herself." She even added that she thought Zarrabi was not "mentally healthy."

Yes, we live in a world where a girl is being called mentally ill for loving her body the way it is.

An outcry against Issler and the Dainty Hooligan erupted all over social media as people rushed to Zarrabi's defense. As more and more called for a boycott of the store, Issler finally sent an apologetic email to Zarrabi, saying she doesn't wish her former employee any ill will and thanking her for a "humbling experience."

While that is nice, unfortunately the Dainty Hooligan's backwards model policy isn't the problem. The real issue is that this type of "You're not worthy if you don't look like a model" message is pushed on girls and women everywhere, all the time. And most of us don't stand up for ourselves. We accept the poison and let it infect us until we hate ourselves, until we believe that our bodies really are the problem instead of our greatest gift.

This is so much bigger than a small-time clothing store.

Which is why I want to give @OKStateProbs the last word, who tweeted:

"Props to Sherene for being confident. I love that. But my stand isn't for Sherene. It's for the girl in the gym trying to lose weight to feel better. It's for the girl who eats lunch by herself because she's self-conscious. It's for the girl who goes to these boutiques or stores because she loves their clothing, only to embarrassingly find out they don't have their size. My stand is to say you're beautiful no matter what you look like. Because beauty is not your appearance, it's your interests, love for others, and who you are."

8 Facts you didn't know about hamsters

$

While it's true that hamsters are a lot less work than a dog, they're not as simple as you might think. Consider these facts carefully before adding a hamster (or two) to your family.

1. Hamsters are nocturnal

Yes, this does mean they're not annoyingly loud while you're trying to help with homework or eat dinner. But it also means they wake up ready for a workout just as you're putting the kids to bed. A word to the wise: If you're going to get a hamster, do not keep it in a bedroom.

2. They're almost blind

In fact, hamsters get around more by smell than by sight.

3. Their teeth never stop growing

How creepy is that? Hamsters chew on hard things like twigs to file down their teeth. If they don't, they can actually injure their own mouths with their long teeth.

4. They multiply...

The gestation period for hamsters is only 18-22 days, and they can have up to 12 babies in one litter, with multiple litters in a year. If you don't want an entire gang of hamsters, maybe stick to just one.

5. ... and they just keep multiplying

Hamsters reach sexual maturity in less than two months — so it's not long before large litters of babies begin having babies of their own.

6. They cannibalize their young

Gross but true. In cases of crowded spaces, stressed-out mamas or too much outside interference, hamsters have been know to eat their young. Take it from me — that's not a sight you want your kids to come home to.

hamster-eat

7. They hibernate

Hamsters like it to be between 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit, and if it gets colder than that, they hibernate. For hamsters, that just means sleeping a lot and waking up every now and then to eat.

A custody hearing was scheduled in New York today, but it was postponed for an undisclosed reason. It is just as well, because Madonna might need some time to counteract Richie's influence on the teen.

Madonna has always said she is a stern disciplinarian and holds her children to high and rigid standards. Turns out, Richie is the exact opposite, and she believes he is using this to turn Rocco against her.

"It's really horrible," says a source close Madonna told Us Weekly. "She feels incredibly hurt."

"Madonna thinks Guy is turning her son against her," the insider said, claiming Ritchie badmouths Madonna in front of their son. "He's telling Rocco he should stay with him. It seems like he's trying to brainwash the kid."

The source said Madonna believes that Richie is tempting Rocco with a rules-free lifestyle, in stark contrast to her strict household. The biggest point of contention? Ritchie is not making Rocco study for his high school qualification exams coming up in May, and he is homeschooling him instead.

More: 9 Times Madonna made out with other performers on camera (VIDEO)

"Madonna wants him to do those exams," the source revealed. "Madonna thinks Guy has pretty much told Rocco that if he wants out of education, he can quit now."

"You can't blame him for wanting to live with someone who will let him run wild."

Ritchie himself has said he doesn't believe kids should go to school. Back in 2011 he told Details, "I am anti-school. And I am anti people putting so much pressure on kids and robbing their childhood by giving them so much homework. I think if kids want to arse around, then they should."

No word yet on when their hearing has been rescheduled.

More: Party Down South's final season starts rocky for one heartbroken housemate

Tonight's episode picks up with Lyle crying in the cab: real talk — it sucks. Poor Lyle! No one wants to think the worst about the person they love, and it has to be hard when the intel comes from friends you love, too.

Party Down South

Some may disagree with Tiff's decision to spill the beans, but I say more power to you, baby girl — ain't nothing wrong in this world with looking out for your friends.

Still, Lyle is obviously wrecked, so the girls leave him in the car to process his emotions. But put a pin in that sentiment for a sec, because Daddy is still back at Social Club and he's got a marlin on the line.

He's caught the attention of a pretty little blonde, so much so they slip into the bathroom to "get things goin'" a little — at which point they wisely decide they should head back to the house.

Only when Walt, Murray, and their girls are ready to go, Daddy can't seem to find his marlin. It's like the drunken Southern version of "Where's Waldo?" Eventually Daddy finds her and they head to the cab.

Party Down South

Five minutes later, his real marlin emerges from the bathroom — where she told him she was going shortly before beer amnesia pickled his brain.

Back at the house, the stand-in marlin looks more than uncomfortable. Not even Walt's, ahem, stellar guitar playing skills could save the day, as Daddy's marlin jumps ship. If it weren't for Walt, in fact, Daddy might not know to this day that he reeled in the wrong one.

More: Party Down South: Insider reveals Walt's embarrassing problem

In an exclusive interview, SallyAnn Salsano — 495 Productions president, and founder and creator/executive producer of Party Down South — told us, "The next morning, Daddy really thought it was the same girl, but Walt told him what really happened. Then Daddy insisted they must have been twin sisters. But, after Walt made it crystal clear, Daddy reluctantly accepted that he brought home a completely different girl."

Of course, even Daddy's seeing double faux pas couldn't compare to the kind of night Lyle was having... especially when Tiff decides to call Santana. Lemme tell ya — it's hard to look menacing with a cheeseburger phone in your hand, but Tiff pulls it off like a boss.

Party Down South

After a rough night with no sleep, Lyle decides to get the full story from Lauren before he calls Santana to confront her, and Lauren all but confirms Santana did stray.

Leave it to Walt, oh wise one, to put things in perspective (it's so sexy when he gets logical) by pointing out the only thing that really matters is what Santana tells Lyle — which, to be honest, wasn't much but was good enough for Lyle.

More: Party Down South sneak peek hints that Lyle's proposal doesn't go as planned

Naturally, the roommates weren't buying Santana's story, and the tension in the house was no better during the daylight hours.

Revealed Salsano: "Actually, it was just as tense sober as it was when they were drinking. Just a lot more... subdued. They both felt the same way sober and — as you will see this season — drinking or not, Tiffany makes her opinion known and is not shy or subtle about it in any way, shape, or form."

Unfortunately, true to Salsano's hints last week, Lyle isn't the only one who winds up "destroyed" this season. After walking around the yard visibly distraught, it's Murray's turn to drop an emotional bomb: he's leaving due to some family issues back home.

No. 1, prayers to Murray's Mama. No. 2, nooooo, not Sugar Bear! But, but, but... he's coming back, right?!

Salsano says we'll have to wait and see, but she did confirm that it came as "a major shock to all of us behind the scenes" and affected the house even more deeply than shown.

"It totally changed the dynamic of the house. The cast was upset; we were upset. But family always comes first. Sugar Bear is a Sugar Bear to everyone behind the scenes as well, and our hearts just went out to him at that point. It for sure saddened and affected all of us," said Salsano.

Party Down South
Image: CMT

Obviously then, the mood in the house is somber after Murray leaves. Somber, y'all. So Walt does the only thing he can to lift everyone's spirits — he "poufs" Daddy's balls in Murray's honor. If that's not love, I just don't know what is.

Just don't expect a repeat pouf-ormance.

"One hundred percent, that was a one-time thing. Walt is about as manly as men get, in my book," said Salsano. "What's awesome about it is that it is something Walt would never have done in the first season. Everyone has grown so much throughout this show in their own ways, and Walt has definitely let his guard down and learned to have fun with things he wouldn't have before."

Party Down South
Image: CMT

Later, at the bar, Lyle decides to leave early to go home and call Santana. When the rest of the house gets home, Tiff flips out when she realizes who Lyle is talking to.

More: Party Down South: An insider spills on Tiffany's two explosive fights

Tensions boil over and, well, things aren't looking so good as week two comes to an end. And according to Salsano, that's just the tip of the iceberg.

"Without giving too much away, you can tick all the boxes: fights, tears, hookups, tears, more fights and more hookups," she hinted. "It's a pretty wild ride. At a certain point, everyone has some tough times... it's definitely the biggest emotional journey for all of them we've ever seen."

'Gay cake' lawsuit takes an unexpected turn

More: Bakery fined $150,000 for refusing to serve lesbian couple

In 2014 the McArthur family, who run Ashers Baking Company in Belfast, refused to bake a pro-gay rights cake for activist Gareth Lee. Lee requested a £36.50 cake featuring Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie and the slogan "Support Gay Marriage" for a private function celebrating International Day Against Homophobia.

Lee paid in full when placing the order at Ashers, but two days later, the company informed him over the telephone that it could not be fulfilled.

In March last year the high-profile case was heard over three days, and two months later District Judge Isobel Brownlie found that Ashers directly discriminated against Lee on the grounds of his sexual orientation as well as his political beliefs. While accepting that the McArthurs had "genuine and deeply held" religious views, Judge Brownlie said those beliefs could not dictate the law and ordered the bakers to pay Lee agreed damages of £500.

Stating that they were appealing against the court ruling to protect all family businesses with deeply held convictions, the McArthurs took their case to the Belfast High Court, where it was scheduled to be heard this week in front of three of Northern Ireland's most senior judges.

It has now been adjourned until May following the dramatic intervention by the Attorney General, whose office wrote to the court setting out issues around a potential conflict between Northern Ireland's equality legislation and European human rights laws.

Outside the court, Ashers manager Daniel McArthur said the company "does not discriminate against anyone" and had taken "issue with the message on the cake and not the customer".

"As a family we do believe we should retain the freedom to decline business that would force us to promote a cause with which we profoundly disagree," said McArthur. "As Christians we cannot simply switch off our faith when we enter the workplace on a Monday morning. To be a Christian at all is to strive to live for Christ in every corner of our lives."

While the majority of gay rights activists and campaigners have supported Lee throughout the lengthy legal process, one of them doesn't, and he wrote an article in The Guardian explaining his position.

Peter Tatchell, who initially backed Lee but has now changed his mind, said: "I profoundly disagree with Ashers' opposition to same-sex love and marriage, and support protests against them. They claim to be Christians, yet Jesus never once condemned homosexuality, and discrimination is not a Christian value."

However, he went on to say: "On reflection the court was wrong to penalise Ashers and I was wrong to endorse its decision... [Lee's] cake request was refused not because he was gay, but because of the message he asked for. There is no evidence that his sexuality was the reason Ashers declined his order."

"In my view, it is an infringement of freedom to require businesses to aid the promotion of ideas to which they conscientiously object. Discrimination against people should be unlawful, but not against ideas," Tatchell concluded.

Some believe that this case is a simple one, whatever side you take. Either the bakers were happy to make a cake for Lee (regardless of his sexuality) but took issue with making a cake supporting a cause they disagreed with (gay marriage). Or they indirectly discriminated against gay customers because they are the ones most likely to be affected by the bakery's policy.

What do you think of this case? Let us know your thoughts below.

How to handle unsupportive team members at work

More: How to become the secret leader in your company

Question:

When my company promoted me two months ago, I was stunned but excited. My manager’s faith in me made me desire to do my very best.

One of my former coworkers, “Ted,” thought he should have received the promotion, as he had a master’s degree. When I reached out to Ted to tell him I thought we’d be a good team, he rebuffed me, saying, “Your promotion’s a joke,” and “Hope you don’t mess things up too bad.”

I didn’t tell my manager about this exchange because I didn’t want him to think I couldn’t handle things. Instead, I brought the team together for a meeting and told them the changes I planned to make. Ted questioned everything I said, rolled his eyes and snorted when I made key points.

I’ve never been able to think of a snappy comeback when put on the spot and didn’t know how to respond to him. I know my face turned red and I forgot much of what I’d planned to say. Worse, I stammered. It was awkward for everyone.

I had planned to hold weekly staff meetings, and I’m dreading the next one. I'm even thinking of calling it off. What do I need to do?

More: How to handle a difficult employee on your team

Answer:

First, talk to Ted in private and give him a chance to get all his concerns on the table. Learn if he can translate his personal attacks into productive ideas. Let him know any drama between the two of you needs to be handled outside staff meetings, and if he tries the eye-rolling, snorting antics again, he's just making a fool of himself and you’ll excuse him until he can pull himself together.

Second, give your manager a heads-up. You had kept silent fearing what he’d think, but he probably expected what’s happening and may have positive suggestions for you. Don’t sell him short. He promoted you for a reason and could have chosen your former coworker.

Third, while some employee or peer critics attack in private, others pounce on their targets in front of an audience, knowing the pressure of watching eyes makes handling snipes more challenging. Your coworker realizes he gets under your skin when you redden or stammer.

If you learn to handle his questions, he won’t be able to foot-sweep you into reacting. In the coming week, practice slowing and deepening your breathing whenever you feel tense. When we breathe rapidly and shallowly in response to being put on the spot, we can’t easily simultaneously access the left and right hemispheres of the brain. The left controls language and problem-solving, while the right controls reaction and creativity. We need both to handle public confrontation.

Get ready for your next meeting by imagining statements Ted might make and preparing an arsenal of responses. For example, say he asks, “Where’d you come up with this crap?” when you propose how you plan to move your department forward. If you respond, “What are you getting at?” you take control of the interaction.

Two can work the crowd game, and your employees depend on you to lead your department forward without time-wasting drama. Take charge by distinguishing between legitimate attacks on your proposals and personal sideswipes. Welcome the former from Ted and other employees. Handle the latter by saying, “I’d like the rest of the employees to have the chance to make up their own minds about what I’m proposing,” “Let’s take the rest of that discussion offline” or “Please find a more professional way to express your thoughts.”

Finally, followers can grow into excellent leaders — if they work at it.

According to The New York Times, Lady Gaga is going to honor him with a tribute performance. "Numerous other artists wanted to participate," said Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich, but he settled on Gaga.

Ehrlich tells The Times that Gaga's performance will be "a true homage to who David was, particularly musically, but not ignoring his influence on fashion and pop culture in a broader way." It'll likely last "six or seven" minutes and span three to four Bowie songs. Celebrity gossip site Oh No They Didn't! has the rumor that one of these covers include Bowie's "Lucifer."

"He is a true, true artist and I don’t know if I ever went, 'Oh, I’m going to be that way like this,' or if I arrived upon it slowly, realizing it was my calling and that’s what drew me to him."

But Herold never expected her role as a caring and committed mom to her children, ages 3 and almost 2, to be used as a strike against her by her opponent. That’s exactly what happened when Patton was interviewed on America’s Work Force Radio, where he tossed around words that belong back in the ‘40s and did us all a favor by shining a spotlight on a very real bias against women that still exists.

“The gal that’s running against me is a 30-year-old, you know, mom, mother of two infants,” Patton said on-air. “And I don’t know if anybody explained to her we’ve got to spend three nights a week in Columbus. So, how does that work out for you? I waited until I was 48 and my kids were raised, and at least adults, before we took the opportunity to try.”

More: Mom has epic response to man who attacked her photos online

If you’re ready to shoot off an angry email at Patton, hold that thought — because Herold doesn’t feel bitter resentment toward him. In fact, she told SheKnows she considers him a “nice man” whom she “respects,” and is actually grateful that he has helped make this a national conversation worth having. Furthermore, there’s a piece to this that isn’t making headlines: Herold feels Patton’s words aren’t doing men any favors either.

“My first reaction was surprise and shock, because I couldn’t believe this was still a conversation that was being had in 2016,” Herold says, referring to the moment her husband, Robert Jerowski, played the radio segment for her. “My second gut reaction? I think my husband was almost more upset by it — are they saying my husband isn’t capable of staying at home? Dads are parents too — they’re not babysitters. It’s almost opposite discrimination.”

More: Mom shares her fight to get cruel meme of her son wiped from the Internet

Herold says that, in her household, she and her husband try to be equal parents and split duties like cooking, cleaning and doing art projects with the kids. They both describe themselves as “political junkies” who know a great deal about a variety of important issues, so when the opportunity presented itself for Herold to run for the House seat, Jerowski stepped up and assured her it was her time to follow her passion and that he would handle more of their household duties — the same conversation that is taking place in millions of households across America, despite what Patton’s comments might make you think.

As a political candidate, Herold is focused on bringing a fresh, new perspective to issues such as health care, education and mental health. Her decision to run for the seat came about after she lobbied her local city for a new outdoor pool and kept getting blocked at the local level. She currently works with children at a school, where she provides occupational therapy, and says she has the flexibility to commit herself full-time to a political role and that she doesn’t feel doing so requires that she make the ultimate trade-off and never see her children. And can we stop for a minute and think about how backward it is to even have to ask her about her schedule? Would we pose the same question to her male opponent?

"There’s a commitment, and obviously it’s not just a three-day-a-week job, but that’s not to say I can’t be home, flexible or take the kids to an event,” Herold says.

Instead of viewing parenthood as a liability in the workplace or within politics, Herold says her hope is that the publicity she and Patton are receiving can be used for positive change by encouraging men and women to focus on how being a parent only enhances your ability to perform your job and pursue your passions.

"As a mom, when you are multitasking, folding laundry while on the phone and simultaneously entertaining your children, your mind just runs,” she says. “You can prioritize, delegate... You learn a lot of things that you might need. I know my strengths — in health care, education and areas I’m really passionate about — areas that could use a fresh perspective. Being a younger woman, a mom, I think you see every day the issues at hand. My child is in pre-K, and I’m very aware of Common Core and what’s coming up. I don’t think it’s looked upon as positively, being a mom and having that inner strength.”

More: Popular author tells moms to 'meditate' their postpartum depression away

In Patton's defense, the majority leader did apologize to Herold for his remark, and something as small as an admittance of wrongdoing in this area is a teeny positive step forward. Whether or not she wins the election, Herold says she will use this experience to help draw attention to both the women and men in politics who are balancing their roles as parents and elected officials. She also wants to help influence other women with political aspirations to not feel confined to one role in their lives, but to feel comfortable embracing all the many facets of their lives, parenthood being a big one, as they embark on their careers.

"I hope people will vote based on issues and whether you’re qualified and that you are not disqualified based on being a mom,” Herold says. "It is a good topic to bring into the spotlight, campaign aside, and everyone I talked to said this is such a great national discussion, because it exists everywhere."

11 Early signs of pregnancy you can't ignore

$

How soon can you find out you’re pregnant?

Most of us are familiar with the fact that a typical pregnancy is 40 weeks. And as the American Pregnancy Association explains it, the first two weeks of your pregnancy don’t even count because you technically aren’t pregnant yet. Weeks one and two of a pregnancy (or pre-pregnancy) include menstruation, followed by preparation for ovulation. During the third week, the body will ovulate and conceive. It isn’t until the fourth week that a very early pregnancy can be confirmed, though a negative pregnancy test is still possible at this time. In weeks four through seven, most women learn they are pregnant, usually after experiencing a few pregnancy symptoms.

More: Women confess the craziest reasons they've faked a pregnancy

If it’s not time to test yet and you simply must know whether or not you have a baby on board, these early pregnancy signs could clue you in. While many of them point to a possible pregnancy, it’s still important to visit your doctor for an official blood test:

1. Bloating/gas

Here’s a fun one to kick off a potential pregnancy — you might have a bun in the oven, or it could be something you ate. Feeling gassy is a possible sign of pregnancy, according to Sherry Ross, MD, OB/GYN and women's health expert at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California. “Very early in pregnancy, complete chaos with bowel function occurs. Hormonal changes and prenatal vitamins create bowel pandemonium, causing bloating, gas and constipation,” says Ross.

2. Changes in urination

Running to the bathroom nonstop? It could be you’re really hydrated, or maybe your bladder is reacting to body changes caused by a new pregnancy. Dr. Gerardo Bustillo, MD, OB/GYN at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California, explains how common this early pregnancy symptom really is: “Increased frequency of urination without burning or other difficulty urinating is one of the most frequently reported symptoms, occurring in over 50 percent of women in all stages of pregnancy. It reflects the fact that the increased volume of blood during pregnancy is filtered by the kidney and results in the bladder filling more frequently. Also, as the uterus grows, the bladder’s capacity to fill is decreased since the uterus and bladder compete for space in the pelvis.”

3. Dizziness

A little lightheadedness right around the time of your expected period could point to pregnancy because of a rise in the hormone progesterone, says Dr. Kecia Gaither, a maternal fetal medicine specialist with a master's degree in public health. “This hormone causes the blood vessels to dilate, which in turn lowers the blood pressure. During the early stages of pregnancy, the cardiovascular system undergoes changes, which may lead to an increased heart rate and water retention. It is good to point out that the red blood cells don't increase as much, which causes a pregnant woman to become anemic — a ‘physiologic anemia.’  This is one of the reasons your health provider will prescribe iron supplementation to offset this naturally occurring process.”

Gaither adds, “It is generally recommended that should a woman experience dizziness, she should immediately lie down and elevate her feet. This allows more blood to flow through the body and brain and may prevent fainting.”

4. Extreme fatigue

Almost every pregnant woman agrees: If you feel like the blood in your veins has been replaced with glue, you very well could be pregnant. But according to Ross, this early sign is easy to miss: “Feeling extremely fatigued or tired is a common early sign of pregnancy that first-time moms may not associate with pregnancy. Most of us feel tired from our everyday life, so it can be confusing to separate normal fatigue from early pregnancy fatigue.”

5. Feeling emotional

PMS or pregnancy? Pregnancy or PMS? This is the question women have been asking themselves for centuries. Feeling a little weepy and weird could mean it’s almost that time of the month, or it could indicate that you’re about to miss your period for another reason altogether. Ross notes early hormonal changes in pregnancy are likely to make a woman feel more emotionally fragile and sensitive. “Anxiety, depression and feeling emotionally vulnerable may be your first sign of pregnancy,” she says.

6. Getting your period

Just when you thought you had it all figured out, Mother Nature goes and throws you yet another curveball. Defying all logic, getting your period can actually mean the opposite of what you would expect — indicating pregnancy, in some cases. “Just around the time you are due for your next period is the same time the embryo implants into the lining of the uterus, causing spotting or light bleeding lasting one to two days and mild uterine cramping,” says Ross. “Implantation bleeding occurs in about 30 percent of pregnancies and is often the first sign of pregnancy.”

7. Missing your period

Finally, finally, something about pregnancy makes sense. Orange Coast Memorial's Bustillo lists amenorrhea — which simply means a missed period — as a possible early sign of pregnancy. “Whenever a woman in her childbearing years notes she is late by at least a week, she should suspect pregnancy, especially if she has not been using birth control. But even in women who faithfully use contraception, pregnancy is possible because no method is 100 percent effective.” Still, he says, “A missed period may be a difficult symptom to evaluate because some women have irregular and prolonged cycles, and some vaginal bleeding occurs commonly in early normal pregnancy.”

Dr. Jonathan Schiffer, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Ohio State University College of Medicine, confirms, “Obviously, that is the most common sign of pregnancy, but if a woman is used to having irregular or light periods, she may not be aware that she is pregnant.”

8. Nausea

Here’s another familiar one most associated with the early pregnancies portrayed on TV: morning sickness. In reality, this pregnancy-related nausea can occur with or without vomiting and at any time of day. “When nausea and vomiting recur daily, especially with no other signs of intestinal problems such as fever or diarrhea, pregnancy should be suspected,” Bustillo says.

More: I hated being pregnant, and I won’t apologize for it

9. Sensitivity to smell or taste

If you suddenly can’t stand the smell of your favorite foods — say, grilled chicken or eggs — something might be amiss. Following right on the heels of nausea is an increased sensitivity to specific scents or food for many women, says Schiffer. “Nausea usually hits a little later, but I have had patients who say their nose gives them the first tipoff to being pregnant, and this might be ignored.”

10. Tender breasts

Similar to the sore boobs you may experience before starting your period, Gaither notes this is one of the easiest early-pregnancy symptoms to ignore. Here’s the subtle distinction between PMS boobs and pre-pregnancy boobs, according to Gaither: “Due to rapid hormonal changes [in pregnancy], the breasts may become swollen, heavier and tender to touch. Many women may notice darkening of the areola. These changes are common and prepare the woman's body for milk production.”

11. Vaginal discharge

For the many women out there wondering if they are pregnant, there's a built-in compass that can point you in the right direction. It’s your vagina, and as Ross tells it, the vagina can take on a personality of its own when a woman becomes pregnant, adding one of the most common vaginal changes associated with early pregnancy is “an increase in vaginal secretions, which look milky white in color and more watery in consistency.”

The bottom line

If more than a few subtle signs are pointing to yes, it may be time to schedule a visit with your doctor. In the early days of pregnancy, most women experience this confusion, where they can’t decipher the signals their body is sending them. Gaither says, “Surprised you're pregnant? Don't be. A lot of women experience this, as early-pregnancy symptoms can mimic what happens right before and during the monthly period.” She advises, “As with any noticeable changes or symptoms that may be out of the ordinary, it's best to visit your healthcare provider. Early prenatal care offers the best care for you and your baby.”
