What science really says about birth order

$

0

That is, does your place in your family and your number of siblings determine who you will turn out to be? There's a lot of hand-wavey pseudo-science out there that suggests you can extrapolate everything from your IQ to your future spouse's hair color based on whether you're the eldest, middle or youngest child, all of which is nonsense. But strangely enough, there are some predictions science can make about you based purely on where you fall in the birth order. (Only predictions, though — these are general trends, not iron rules.)

Some of these predictions are based on the differing social structure a baby is greeted with when being born into a family with zero, one, two or five pre-existing kids. Some of it is pure chemistry that happens during a fetus's incubation in a previously inhabited uterus. And some of it is a mixture of both. So how might your birth order be affecting you?

More: Clever dad uses Snapchat to turn his newborn baby into hysterical characters

1. Intelligence

Certain kinds of intelligence, at least — the kind that registers on IQ tests, where firstborn children enjoy a minuscule advantage (about 3 points, if you were curious). Firstborns get their parents' undivided attention, and possibly a big stack of expectations to go along with it. Plus, the amount of adult language they're exposed to isn't diluted by a bunch of preschooler babbling: "I wanna go toylut!" "I has cookie pweez?" They also get to act as teacher (and tyrant) to their younger siblings, which can help them practice the concepts they've already learned — some research suggests that it's probably family size, not birth order, that has the greatest effect.

As for baby No. 2, or 3, or more: By the time they arrive, Mom and Dad don't have time to drill them on their letters of the alphabet and multiplication tables. It's enough to stop them from eating paste, and that'll have to do. (Later born kids may, however, do better when it comes to other types of intelligence, as you'll see soon.)

More8 Things no one tells you pregnancy will do to your vagina

2. Sexuality

Are you a man with a lot of older brothers? Statistically, you're a little more likely to be attracted to men than the general population. This appears to hold up even for boys who didn't grow up around their older brothers; however, adoptive older brothers don't do the trick. The hypothesis is that the repeated exposure makes Mom's body start to develop an immune response to something produced by her male fetuses, but no one really knows why this happens, and there doesn't appear to be any equivalent effect on the sexuality of girls with a lot of older sisters.

More: Talking to your kids about their sexuality

3. Personality

In general, firstborns tend to be reliable, risk-averse perfectionists; middle children are most commonly resilient born mediators; and youngest kids are the family clowns. But why?

It has a lot to do with what the family already looks like when the newest kid arrives on the scene. Eldest children have their parents' undivided attention for a spell -—but they're also probably the ones subjected to the strictest rules and tightest control, before parents loosen up and realize the occasional scraped knee or food eaten off the floor is rarely fatal: a good recipe for creating a people-pleasing, cautious adult. Middle kids have to negotiate the tricky business of never being an only child, and not being the doted-on youngest for very long; hence their ability to grow up rolling with the punches. And those who grow up as the youngest tend to be quite independent thanks to growing up with the fewest rules and restrictions, which makes them the ones who are confident enough to seek the spotlight — and the role as "the baby" may just help them get away with a little bit more, too.

More: Parenting according to your child's personality

4. Health

Being a younger child is correlated to being involved in more accidents, while being the firstborn is correlated with having a higher premenopausal risk of breast cancer as well as a greater chance of being overweight. It's not 100 percent clear why these statistical differences exist (differences in the amount of estrogen in the womb between pregnancies? different lifestyles thanks to different socialization?) or how meaningful they really are; notice the key words above are "correlated with," not "causes."

Because as with the previous categories, these are predictions, not prophecies. Birth order personality types are based on the most common themes in families in our culture — they're not guarantees and they're not universally applicable. The actual statistical differences related to birth order are generally so small as to be almost totally irrelevant. And besides, some of the biggest effects of birth order on personality may be in how we perceive ourselves. So... who do you want to be?

More: Steve Harvey deserves forgiveness after announcing the wrong Miss Universe

There is no denying that host Steve Harvey slipped up when he announced the winner of the show, and Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, was unfortunately caught in the crossfire. But her recent comments about the situation are pretty surprising.

Gutierrez has addressed the scandal, and according to TMZ, she suggested that the show may have purposely tried to embarrass her and cause her emotional damage. "If that was the goal, they succeeded," she said.

And it wasn't just her who felt insulted by the situation.

More: Perez Hilton claims Miss Colombia was anything but sweet & gracious

"It was very humiliating for me, but also for the whole country, and for all the people not only from Colombia but the other Latinos that were in the auditorium," Gutierrez said.

The rightful winner of the crown turned out to be Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, and according to the gossip site, Gutierrez's comment "underscores" what pageant insiders told them about racial tension between Wurtzbach and the Latina contestants.

And for those wondering what Gutierrez thought of Vivid Entertainment's porn offer (which would earn her up to $1 million), she revealed there's no chance she'll be accepting it, exclaiming, "My parents would kill me."

Do you think that Ariadna Gutierrez's remarks are unfair? Or is she right to share her thoughts on the situation? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

10 Foods and drinks you need now to help cure a hangover

What causes a hangover?

A hangover is a notorious condition caused by drinking to excess. Hangover symptoms can range from a splitting headache and a queasy stomach to dry mouth, dizziness, lethargy, dry heaving and even depression. You feel super sick, drained of energy and foggy-headed.

Any food or drink (we don't recommend more alcohol, though some swear by a hair of the dog!) will replenish nutrients and rehydrate you, especially if you happened to throw up. Here are some things that help cure a hangover in a hurry.

1. Water first

That foggy-headed feeling can be relieved by staying well hydrated; excessive drinking causes dehyration. In addition to drinking water along with your alcoholic beverages, be sure to drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up.

2. Sports drinks

If you feel like your stomach can't handle any food or mass amounts of water right away, then try sipping a sports drink. Not only will it rehydrate you, but it will also replenish your electrolytes, which can be depleted thanks to alcohol's diuretic properties. Just try to choose a low-sugar option.

3. Fizzy drinks

Is nausea your big hangover problem? If so, cracking open a can of seltzer or soda could do the trick. A caffeine-free option like ginger ale works especially well — without caffeine (a diuretic), you'll rehydrate faster, and ginger has been used for centuries to settle upset stomachs.

More: Foods to eat if you have a headache

4. Bananas

Due to alcohol's diuretic effect, noshing on bananas the morning after can replace potassium and other lost electrolytes. Blend a banana into a fruit smoothie if your stomach is feeling rebellious against solid foods.

5. An egg and whole-wheat toast

You can combat the hangover fatigue by eating a light breakfast. The combination of protein and carbohydrates in an egg with toast is a good source of recovery nutrients as well as easy on the stomach. In addition, eggs contain the amino acid cysteine, which can break down the toxins that cause hangover symptoms, and whole grains contain magnesium, which alcohol can deplete.

6. Herbs

An herbal approach can also offer relief. Willow bark is nature's answer to aspirin, while evening primrose oil can help nurse your alcohol-riddled liver back to health. Dosing with milk thistle oil or chewing fennel seeds is another aid in liver function. Herbal teas can help with rehydration, particularly peppermint tea, which will soothe your tummy. Talk to an herbalist or naturopath for the best herbal hangover prescription.

More: Foods that help burn fat

7. Greasy foods

Though a plate piled high with greasy pizza or a burger and fries might give you the dry heaves the morning after too much alcohol, eating high-fat foods before imbibing can reduce your risk of a hangover, because the fats line your stomach and intestines. A healthier approach is to eat foods high in healthy fats, such as olive oil, salmon or avocados, and keeping your alcoholic drinks to a minimum.

8. Spicy foods

A lot of people swear by spicy foods as a hangover cure. They jump-start your metabolism, and believe it or not, the spiciness itself gives you something to focus on other than how hungover you feel. But be careful: If you have trouble with spicy foods in general, then during a bad hangover is not the time to try them.

9. Soup

If the thought of chewing is a little too much for you in your weary state, then a warm bowl of soup could be the perfect hangover cure. You can try a low-sodium option from a can or box, but it's also simple to make your own. Heat up some low-sodium broth, add whatever veggies you have on hand (and some noodles if you're feeling adventurous), and cook until they're soft. The broth will rehydrate you, while the veggies will replenish the nutrients you lost the night before.

More: Foods that relieve PMS cramps

10. Plain crackers

Low-salt, low-fat crackers can be a godsend if your stomach is too queasy to keep down a big breakfast. Nibble on a few plain crackers to help soak up whatever nastiness is left in your stomach from last night, and after eating a few, you should start to feel better.

More: Is David Foster's wandering eye the reason he and Yolanda Foster are divorcing?

"I am trying to watch the show with an open heart and no judgement of anyone in it as I choose to share my journey in order to bring awareness to Lyme disease and invisible chronic disease in general," Foster wrote. "I'm well aware that it opened up a storm of debate, but as long as we can speak with kindness and good intent, I believe that my quest for a cure will be rewarded one day."

Foster then went on to speak about the difficulties of dealing with "an invisible illness," and the complications she has endured, including coming close to death.

She wrote, "Last June, David woke up one morning and said, "We are not doing any more treatments until you get a full body scan.

"That scan probably saved my life, as doctors found free-floating silicone under my left arm pit, under my right clavicle bone, and under my rib cage...None of these findings changed my late stage Lyme disease diagnosis, but it was a good explanation of why three years of hard work had not paid off yet. It was a big breakthrough in my case at a time that I was just existing. At that point I honestly was not sure how and if I was going to pull through."

Foster and David may have decided to go their separate ways but they remain on good terms, and it looks as though Foster has him to thank for helping her through a very bad time.

Mark Salling insiders say he's innocent of child pornography charges

And you weren't the only one. While most of the world has been shaking their heads, and their fists, at the heinous accusations against Salling — which include being in possession of more than 1,000 images of "child sexual exploitation" on his computer, according to police — those close to him refuse to believe he's capable of such horrific crimes.

"This isn't the guy I know at all," a close friend of Salling reportedly told People magazine. "I have to believe his computer was hacked."

More: Glee's Mark Salling admits to injuring a woman, but the charges are bizarre

Another insider told People that, while Salling's reputation is not squeaky clean, the accusations against him are still extremely hard to believe.

"He loves going out and has always been a big flirt — constantly hitting on women at parties," the insider told People. "He came across as skeezy but I never would have pegged him for something like this."

Police were reportedly tipped off by Salling's ex-girlfriend, so it could be theorized that the woman was trying to set Salling up. However, according to information released by TMZ, it seems that police were very thorough with their investigation before obtaining a warrant and raiding Salling's property to make sure the ex-girlfriend wasn't plotting some kind of revenge.

Though the amount of evidence against Salling seems to be piling up, Adi Shankar, the director of Salling's upcoming movie Gods and Secrets, isn't ready to throw the towel in on Salling just yet  — but he will ax Salling from his film if the allegations turn out to be true.

"Today I was made aware of the serious allegations against Salling as a result of numerous media outlets hounding me as to whether he would remain in Gods and Secrets," Adi Shankar told E! News. "I won't feed our growing pitchfork culture. I'm going to wait for all the facts to arrive and if in fact these allegations are true, I will immediately take action which includes removing his scenes from the project."

Of course, in the court of public opinion, Salling has already been tried and convicted.

6 Awesome comebacks for when you get 'mansplained' at the gym

And yet, the other day, as I was dropping it low (in the fitness sense), a man came up behind me. "Excuse me," he started. I immediately cringed.

As I re-racked my loaded bar and turned around, the young man continued, "I was watching you from across the gym." (What up, creeper?) "And I have to tell you that you're doing that all wrong. In fact, I was worried you were going to hurt yourself. I almost ran over and grabbed that bar away from you!"

More: Hilarious 'documentary' calls out types of gym goers every gym has (VIDEO)

I bristled as he then proceeded to give me a bunch of unnecessary and wrong advice, "mansplaining" to me how to do squats. He even threw my weights on the floor (!) and moved me out of the way of the bar so he could demonstrate.

After he left me to pick up the mess he'd made, I fumed — because, of course, I couldn't think of anything good to say in the moment! Instead, I'd offered a meek, "Oh, thanks," to which he nodded and pointed a finger at me like I was a disobedient child before strutting away.

But, what I wish I could have said was, "Actually, I've been lifting weights — and successfully back squatting — for longer than you've had facial hair. And also, you're doing it wrong. Both the squatting and the facial hair."

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time this has happened to me, and my experience isn't unique. Almost every woman who's spent any time in a gym, especially on the weight floor, has a similar story to share, and it's one of the top reasons ladies give for not wanting to lift weights at the gym. But lifting weights is fantastic exercise and women need it every bit as much as men do.

More: How time of day affects your workouts

So, in the spirit of good relations between the sexes, here are six responses you can use the next time someone tries to mansplain something to you at the gym. (Disclaimer: Of course, not all men do this. Most men at gyms are wonderful and kind and polite. But, there are enough men that do do this to make it an issue.)

Option No. 1: Ask them a question back. “Oh, that’s really interesting! Why do you say that women should never do headstands while on their period?” Often advice-givers are trying to tell you something about themselves (like that they ran track in college and miss the good ol’ days). This will take the pressure off of you to actually use their advice and yet still make them feel heard.

Option No. 2: Give them a hard no. Sometimes the only way to stop the advice-giver is to give them an answer they can’t argue with. My personal favorite is, “God told me not to” because who can argue with the Big Guy, amirite? Other responses include, “Wow, that workout powder sounds really cool, but my doctor says I shouldn’t take supplements that list explosive diarrhea as a side effect.” Or, “I’m pretty sure that’s illegal in all 50 states, but if I ever visit American Samoa, I’ll give it a go.” OK, or you can just be reasonable and cut to the chase by saying, "No, thanks."

Option No. 3: Take their advice. If it can’t hurt and the giver seems to know their stuff, then why not use their free expertise? This is how I learned the proper way to do Olympic lifts when I first started CrossFit. A man saw me about to do serious damage to myself and butted in with a polite, “Excuse me, but I used to be a competitive lifter and if you keep doing cleans that way, you’re going to crush your windpipe.” It can be hard to swallow your pride at not having thought of it first or your embarrassment at having been caught doing something wrong, but sometimes people are smart! The key is knowing that you only have to accept advice that you find accurate and valuable.

Option No. 4: Laugh. If their advice is utterly ridiculous, pretend like you think they are just messing around with you and laugh. The key here is to laugh with them, not at them. (If you must laugh at them — and sometimes you really must — then save it for when they’re out of earshot. Plus it’ll give you time to make the story really good for your friends.) The more insistent they get, the louder you laugh. Eventually, they’ll either start laughing too or run away because they’ve clearly provoked your seventh personality, the one with all the inner demons.

Option No. 5: Wear headphones. Crank the tunes, go to your happy place and get your sweat on. People generally won’t try to give you advice if they know you can’t hear them. Just give a cute smile and that I-wish-I-spoke-your-language shrug and move on. Even if you don’t actually have your music turned on.

Option No. 6: Say exactly what you've always wanted to say. Be sarcastic, funny and awesome if you want to! And if you think of the perfect response in time, then tell me about it because I really, really want to hear all about it.

But even if someone suspects you watched Toy Story for baby name inspiration, who cares? It's your baby, and if you want an awesome Pixar baby name for him, then go for it. There is nothing wrong with getting baby-naming inspiration from a film, even if it's an animated one, and it will make a cute story to share with your little one when he gets older, too.

Jill Duggar's babyproofing for little Izzy comes under fire

In the image, the little boy (who was born in April) is shown grinning while sitting on a blanket in front of a bunch of Christmas presents ... and an electrical outlet.

Duggar baby

Duggar baby

Not surprisingly, the Duggars' fanbase has quickly jumped on the fact that the outlet does not have any safety caps to prevent little Israel from sticking his fingers -- or something else -- in the open slots.

More: The one time kids should not be saying 'thank you'

Some went as far as calling them "neglectful" parents.

But is this yet another mountain being made out of a molehill?

Well, yes. And no.

There are some babyproofing steps that parents may choose to skip because of their own child's individual needs. However electrical outlet safety is one parents should take seriously. According to statistics from the National Fire Protection Association, some 2,400 kids suffer "severe shock and burns" each year from sticking things into the slots of electrical receptacles. They estimate anywhere from six to 12 kids even die every year because of this hazard.

More: Jessa and Jill Duggar share big plans for their growing families

That said, there are some pretty easy explanations that take Jill and Derick out of "neglectful parent" territory. For starters, many safety experts now advise against the plug-type safety covers as they can be wrested off by baby and become a choking hazard. In their place, there are safety plates that look much like the traditional outlet.

What's more, it's highly possible that the baby was not at the Dillard house. It's not unheard of for parents to take photos of their babies at homes other than their own ... homes that are not babyproofed. Often that means parents need to keep a closer eye on their kids at these homes, but if every parents were bound to take their babies only to babyproofed homes, can you imagine how many friends and family members would never actually see them?

And even if they are at home, well, who knows where that outlet is located. Is it in a spot the baby can often get to? Do his parents watch him like a hawk when he's near it?

Baby safety is certainly something parents need to make a priority, but every child and every home is different. Some parents never put up gates or put locks on things, and their children turn out just fine, while other parents lock down everything in sight, only to face a little Houdini who manages to break through it all anyway.

Teen Mom's Amber Portwood bashed after winning custody of her daughter

Portwood confirmed in a recent interview that she has finally come to a custody settlement with her ex-fiancé, Gary Shirley, and the former couple will share custody of their daughter Leah. Shirley was previously granted full custody of Leah in 2012, after Portwood received a 5-year prison sentence for drug related offenses. Portwood was released from jail in 2013.

"We finally came to an agreement and I’m very happy that Gary and I are going to share joint custody of Leah," Portwood said in a statement to OK! Magazine. "This is something I’ve been waiting for. The time is perfect."

"We talked for 30 minutes and I said, 'This is not healthy for any of us, this is not healthy for Leah, let’s just be adults and do this,'" she added. "There are certain things I did that made him feel a little better about it."

But some Internet users were not sharing Portwood's warm sentiment.

"Give me a break. She chose drugs over this kid," one Radar Online reader commented. "Both her and her fat, disgusting baby daddy are garbage. This child will only have a life of misery."

"Neither one of them is a prime example of parenting. The garbage they spew in front of that poor child, should be criminal," wrote another commenter.

It wasn't all that long ago that Portwood was very publicly feuding with Shirley, as evidenced by the new clip from Teen Mom OG in which Portwood says she thinks Shirley is trying to brainwash Leah to turn her against her mother.

"It was in the beginning of the custody battle," Portwood said in the recent interview of the preview clip. "Things were being said over there. We have a great relationship and then all of a sudden she didn’t want to come over she had never said that before. I said something to Gary and she hasn’t been that way since. We’re back to normal."

More: Teen Mom's Amber Portwood's ex apparently has no plans to share custody

It has been a bumpy road for Portwood as she bravely faced her addiction battles, but she seems to have a handle on her demons and Leah's best interest at heart. Furthermore, her comments to OK! about sitting down with Shirley might be the most mature statement we've heard from her so far. There's no reason she doesn't deserve a second chance to be a good mom to her daughter.

What do you think? Are the haters comments about Portwood unfair?

1. All things fitness

Great news for anyone with fitness-oriented New Year's resolutions: January is hands down the best time to purchase home gym equipment and gym memberships. According to Glaser:

"Retailers love to take advantage of those New Year's resolutions to get in shape by offering deals on sports and fitness equipment. While we don't necessarily see more deals or all-time lows after Christmas, we definitely saw better site-wide discounts from a range of stores. Last year, stores like Dick's Sporting Goods, Target, Sears and NordicTrack had after-Christmas discounts of 25 percent to 50 percent on select sporting and fitness goods, sometimes on top of clearance discounts. Groupon even had sales of up to 90 percent off fitness deals. This is also traditionally a good time to get deals on gym memberships... You can often grab perks like no sign-up fee, or extended introductory rates."

2. Apparel and Accessories

As stores work to move all of the inventory that wasn't picked up by gift-givers, you can scoop up the benefits by taking advantage of after-Christmas sales, says Glaser:

"On the other hand, January is great for after-Christmas sales on apparel, accessories and sporting goods. Those department store sales on accessories — like jewelry and fragrances — are good for getting a jump on Valentine's Day shopping."

3. Valentine's goodies

Speaking of which, don't wait until the shelves are picked clean the night before Feb. 13. The best deals on treats for your sweetheart will happen at the end of January, so that's the time to buy:

"Jewelry sales might be better in early February, but January is good if you want to beat the rush. Check site-wide and storewide after-Christmas sales for gifts.

"Look for Valentine's Day flower sales from 1-800-Flowers and Teleflora to start just before the end of the month, as well as chocolate sales from Harry & David and Godiva... Flower and gift basket retailers will also begin their Valentine's Day sales at the end of the month."

4. Video games

Indulge in a little playtime with your favorite gaming blockbusters, or pick some up for the gamers in your life by taking advantage of January discounts. Glaser expects they'll make the short list on DealNews' Editors' Choice list, which compiles all of the best finds:

"This will be a great time to stock up on your favorite video game titles, especially for older systems... over 40 percent of video game deals are expected to be Editors' Choice during the upcoming after-Christmas sales. Last year, we saw Xbox One games starting at $8!"

More: 3 Things to buy for yourself after Christmas

Better buy it later:

Of course, not everything is a hot buy, and just because a store markets a sale doesn't mean it's the best deal possible and you can't pick up the goods at a later, better date. Among the things to avoid? Electronics and appliances, according to Glaser:

"Following the rush of Black Friday and holiday sales, and with Memorial Day and back-to-school sales still far off, this is not the best time to buy major electronics and appliances like televisions, laptops and washer and dryers."

Up in the air:

Furniture purchases have traditionally been a good bet in the month of January, but Glaser urges caution:

"We've often heard that furniture inventory turns over in January. And January does have some clearance sales from stores like Target, Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Kmart. But last year, these deals did not impress us with their quality; in fact, January 2015 did not have a single Editors' Choice furniture deal."

Still need to make a major purchase in the New Year like an appliance or living room set? Worry not —there is a way for you to get the best possible deal on those items:

"If you absolutely need to make a major purchase, there are always ways to save and at least some deals available; tips and discounts can always be found at DealNews."

5 Very real lessons motherhood taught me this year

$

0

1. The agony of motherhood does not go away; it just switches into something else.

As my 1-year-old son finally started sleeping through the night, he also learned to break things, to treat the car seat as the ultimate devil, to breastfeed like his life depended on it and not to breastfeed at all for a day, or two or ten. He also learned to say, “No” to any question — even if it’s not a yes or no type of question, like "Why are you crying?"

2. Even as a mother I am still sexy.

I am still fun. I still love to go out for drinks with my friends and for fancy dinners with my husband. I even developed something mothers don’t usually develop after becoming mothers: a love for fashion. Blame it on scanning Instagram for cute toddler outfits.

3. The mind of a mother is very different than the mind of a non-mother.

A mother’s mind is a mind that thinks of others, feels with others, understands others and cooperates with others. How else would you explain a mother’s remark like, “He’s just sleepy,” to a completely raging, crazy, screaming and angry toddler at the supermarket?

4. Motherhood is more enjoyable with a supportive partner.

My absolute biggest joy is seeing my partner and son playing together. Nothing compares to seeing the happiness and laughter on my baby's face, especially when I am not the reason behind his laughter. Seeing and enjoy his happiness from the outside doubles the joy. This year I realized why it takes two partners to create and raise a child. This year, I appreciated partnership in parenting, and I am so happy I did.

5. I shouldn’t judge myself so harshly.

I love my son unconditionally and I need to understand that he has his own personality and temper. I will make mistakes, and I will learn. One can not know the right way to do every single thing. At the end of the day, I cannot be a nutritionist, teacher, therapist and doctor for my baby. Parenting is not black and white. There is no one right way to do things. I can just try my very best to figure out how to be the best mother to my son. As long as I love my baby, try to provide a nurturing environment for him to reach his fullest potential and try my best to help him avoid danger, then I am a good mother.

This year has been tough as hell. I have cried more than I had hoped, I have doubted myself more than I should have; but in the end, I have triumphed. I have learned that I am a damn good mother. I won’t let myself think otherwise.

2016, here I come: stronger, more determined and more hopeful. This year I will hear a yes.

6 Things you swear you'll never do... before you have kids

Then I had kids.

Six things I said I’d never do as a mom:

1. My kids will never use an iPad at the grocery store

I was certain my children would sit quietly in the cart and wouldn’t need to be pacified by Angry Birds to get through a shopping trip. They’d be Mommy’s helpers, holding coupons without wrinkling them or getting them out of order.

I bet you’re wondering what I was smoking.

Taking my kids grocery shopping is a desperate move forced by critically low food supplies. Period. And couponing? Whatever. My kids are glazed out and glued to their screens while I shop for food to fill their little bellies. I am unashamed.

More15 Fierce female-empowerment songs every mom should teach her daughter

2. I’ll never feed my kids crap

No Kraft mac and cheese or anything made by Chef Boyardee for us. I remember gazing at my beautifully organized cabinets, thinking: My little darlings will eat organic beetroot pasta with Gorgonzola cheese sauce. None of that blue box crap for us.

Riiiight. Last week, we had scrambled eggs and Diet Coke for dinner because I was too tired to go grocery shopping. Go me.

MoreNo child-free woman wants to hear this question, ever

3. My house will never look like a train wreck

There won’t be a plastic tub filled with soap scum and headless, naked Barbie dolls in my bathroom. Our Zen living space will not contain ugly, plastic toys. We will have vintage wooden playthings that provide age-appropriate mental stimulation while contributing to the aesthetically pleasing environment in our home. Guests will be comfortable sitting on my couch to enjoy a glass of wine without having to check to make sure they’re not about to park their asses on part of what used to be a banana.

Are you laughing at me yet?

My house looks like the plastic toy fairy puked in every single room. And while I strive for my living room to be a comfortable and food residue-free place to hang out, best to look before you sit.

4. I will never look like a train wreck

I won’t be that mom who lets herself go. I’ll never drop the kids off at school in my jammies with visible remnants of yesterday’s mascara. My nail polish will never be chipped and I’ll only wear yoga pants for actual yoga.

Snort. While I still make a reasonable effort not to look like a hag, my bar for everyday cuteness is lower. I don’t drop my kids off wearing visible remnants of yesterday’s mascara because although I probably do own mascara, I’m not exactly sure where it is.

And, while not my norm, I did once leave the house in pajamas and my husband’s raincoat. It wasn’t raining but it helped conceal that I wasn’t wearing a bra.

5. I will never overshare

I used to scoff at those parents who posted potty play-by-plays on Facebook, but you know what? Sometimes, the fact that my kid didn’t crap his pants is the biggest freakin’ news of my day, and I want others to bask in my triumph. Roll your eyes at my oversharing… zero shits given... pun intended.

MoreBefore baby, after baby: 10 Things that used to gross you out

6. I will never do disgusting stuff

I used to be appalled when I saw moms doing the public poop check: the not-so-discreet back-of-the-diaper sniff.

OMG, she just sniffed that kid’s ass!

Ditto scooping a pacifier off the floor, licking it and shoving the germy gobstopper back in the kid’s mouth. Talk about 50 shades of gross.

Um… yeah. Moms have special immunity against the grossness of poop, snot and anything else that comes out of a small human. And seriously, who has time to actually look inside your kid’s diaper? The nose knows.

Moms-to-be, never say never. Karma will sneak up to bite you in your smug little behind.

Rob Kardashian shuns those who love him most in wake of health crisis

Kardashian has returned home after being hospitalized over the holiday weekend due to abnormally high blood sugar levels and reportedly receiving a diabetes diagnosis, but instead of leaning on the rest of the Kardashian clan for support, he's instead shunning them and refusing to see or talk with anyone.

"Rob does not want to see anyone and he has made that very clear to the whole family," a "family insider" said to Radar Online. "He is not answering calls or returning anyone’s text messages."

The exception, of course, is sister Khloé Kardashian, who has always shared a special bond with Rob and has also welcomed him into her home as a roommate for a number of years. "The only person that can even see him right now is Khloé," the source said.

Khloé has had her share of concerns for her own well-being in 2015, as the horrible stress of dealing with estranged husband Lamar Odom's drug-related accident sent her own health into a downward spiral this fall.

As for Rob, Radar's insider claims that the entire Kardashian clan is extremely worried at this point and urging Rob to seek treatment at some kind of facility — and that Rob's health situation is actually much more dire than the public even knows.

"Everyone is urging him to go to rehab, whether it be a physical rehabilitation rehab or a drug program," the source said. "Rob is scared right now and he should be... his health is the worst it has ever been and, diabetes aside, he has to overcome the mental health issues that seem to be at the center of all of this.

"The kid needs help and if he does not get the help he will not be around to see 2017," the source added.

Rob may not be particularly active on social media, but that didn't stop well-wishing fans from coming out in full force this week.

Louisiana couple's message about love is inspiring thousands

The Monroe, Louisiana, pair wore matching T-shirts — with Mrs. Bell (for her) and Mr. Bell (for him) etched on the back.

"Me and my husband, we are a happy couple, so we did silly poses with the photographers," Tynedria told Good Morning America. "He [photographer Keyston Harris] uploaded them on Facebook."

The happy photos — including one where Tynedria is giving Pendarius a piggy back ride — were meant to be a keepsake for their family, but the photos went viral on social media after they were posted online. The reason: The Bells don't fit the "typical" idea of what a couple should look like because Tynedria is plus-sized while Pendarius is thin.

But so-called norms don't fit the pair, who has been together for eight years and married for four. Tynedria and Pendarius are in love — and now they are inspiring others.

More: The sweet thing one man does nightly for his diabetic girlfriend

“I got all these messages, saying ‘They say plus-size women don’t have any hope in relationships, but if we could do it, anybody else could do it.’ Some said it inspired them to keep pushing when they were thinking about giving up,” Tynedria told The News Star, adding that she's received several thousand messages and friend requests over the past few days.

Tynedria Bell 2

Tynedria Bell 2

One woman told Tynedria that the "fact that you all don’t mind taking pictures, doing silly things and posting them online is amazing. This is a beautiful relationship and I am truly happy for the both of you.”

"Just last night I was telling my aunt I'm never gonna find love because of my weight," another follower wrote. "You and your husband inspired me to know there's someone out there for me. Thank you."

And it's about time. We've made strides toward being a more size-accepting society, but there's still a rather large stigma that questions why a man would want to date a woman who weighs more than him. Those who do are viewed as fetishists or "chubby chasers," when that is definitely not the case for many men in love with plus-sized women. People of all sizes deserve to be and feel loved and not have it questioned or dismissed.

All of the positive messages make "me feel excellent," Tynedria told GMA. "When I was young I was so negative and now I see people looking up to me. For the people that didn't have faith in themselves, they didn't need me to boost their ego, but I thank God that they paid attention to me to help do that. They have nothing more to hide or have to be depressed, or stressing. Everybody's got to be loved."

8 Real estate photography tips to make your listing stand out

$

If you have ever been in the market for a home (or if you have ever bookmarked your dream homes on Zillow at two in the morning), then you understand this well. Some homes look like they’ve been shot by a professional who is used to working with supermodels, while others look like someone’s child got ahold of the camera.

As any real estate agent will tell you, selling a home quickly and for a good price is all about presentation (and often location). You can dress up your home by improving curb appeal and decorating for showings, but all your hard work will go to waste if you don’t have attractive listing pictures to get prospective buyers in the door. As the National Association of Realtors points out, the modern house hunt has gone largely digital — most, if not all, browsing takes place online, and people are immediately drawn to pretty pictures. A recent international case study using IMOTO real estate photography confirmed that homes with professional photos sold 50 percent faster and 39 percent closer to their original listing price.

More: How to sell your house quicker than you ever thought possible

Professional photos can be a great option to help your home stand out if you want to move your property fast, but don’t despair if a photo shoot isn’t in your budget. You can still bring your listing photos up to professional standard with these insider tips:

1. Clear the room

Real estate photography 1

Real estate photography 1

You’d think this would go without saying, but people and pets continue to pop up in real estate pics time and again. The best listing pictures focus on a clear, clean and well-designed room — without anyone hanging out in it. Joshua Jarvis, realtor at Jarvis Team Realty in Duluth, Georgia, keeps it short and sweet, “Don't allow people or pets in a photo.”

2. Don’t use your phone

Real estate photography 2

Real estate photography 2

Here’s another no-brainer from Jarvis that happens more often than he’d like to admit. People take the convenient route and use a cell phone camera for home photography, when these lenses were designed for portraits and not real estate. Jarvis considers a real camera to be nonnegotiable for real estate listing photos, saying, “A wide angle lens is invaluable. I'm not talking about fish-eye. Those are not what you want. It's an actual wide angle. You're looking for a 10mm-18mm range. You can google this relatively easy — just say no to fish-eye.”

3. Go wide

Real estate photography 3

Real estate photography 3

Approach the exterior of your home the way you would want a prospective buyer to see it. As Jarvis explains, this involves going wide to capture an impressive front shot that can be done with a regular camera, no special equipment needed. “It could very well be the most important photo, and it needs to capture not just the home but give the home some sort of appeal. A quick search in most MLS will reveal who's taking good photos and who isn't,” Jarvis explains.

4. Improve your lighting

Real estate photography 4

Real estate photography 4

Rain on a wedding day may be bad luck, but an overcast sky works wonders for photography. Jerry Grodesky, degreed photographer and managing broker at Farm and Lake Houses Real Estate in Loda, Illinois, explains, “Contrary to popular belief, a rainy or overcast day does have its benefits for photographs. Color saturation is often better than a sunny day with fewer highlights and shaded areas that detract from the image.” Grodesky suggests improving indoor pictures by using different indoor lighting in a process of trial and error, “Ranging from colorations of orange to purple to blue: that bedroom lamp, the fluorescent shop light, the sunlit window and your flash are wreaking havoc on your image. Try taking multiple pictures using the different lights or a combination of them. Then pick the most pleasing pic when you review them at your desktop.”

5. Tie up loose ends

Real estate photography 5

Real estate photography 5

Shopping for homes is one time when buyers are encouraged to judge a book by its cover. Meaning, sloppy photos that don’t look finished will make potential buyers click right on by. While Melissa Assael, associate real estate broker with Douglas Elliman in New York, says she could write a book on these messy little snafus, her top photo polishing picks include, “Close the toilet. Pick up, clean up and de-clutter: Clear the counters, make the beds, remove knick-knacks and personal items as much as possible, and close the drawers and closet doors.” She adds, “Remove cars from the driveway and in front of your house when shooting the exterior.”

6. Shoot the whole room

real estate photo tips 6

real estate photo tips 6

To give your home that “good angle” edge, it may be tempting to take pictures of one focal point in a room that seems the most attractive, but Christy Edgar, contracts specialist at Pierce Murdock Group of Keller Williams Alexandria-Kingstowne, cautions against this practice. She says, “I found that the most important pictures are generally the ones that show the entire room. Often, we see listing photos that are focused on a corner or a doorway or something that the agent must have felt was important but that, taken out of context, becomes meaningless.”

7. Focus on the best upgrades

Real estate photography 7

Real estate photography 7

While you do need to take photos of every room in your house to present a complete picture, most home-shoppers are looking for something specific. In a recent Owners.com survey of more than 1,000 adults in the U.S., an updated kitchen and a good school district were the two most important features prospective buyers were looking for, at 21 percent and 20 percent respectively. So, if you’ve got a remodeled kitchen or another attractive home upgrade, make sure to capture a crisp shot for your listing pictures.

8. Edit your final picks

Real estate photography 8

Real estate photography 8

Take a quick moment before you hit “send” on your final photos and ask a trusted friend or family member to review your photo shoot. Grodesky encourages sellers to keep their listing pictures in balance with a minimal emphasis on the less important rooms of the house. He explains, “Out of the 10 to 25 images that your MLS lets you download, we do not need to see three pictures of the bathroom!” As a general rule, buyers are looking for meaningful shots, Grodesky says, without lingering too much on one part of the house.

Why the secret to getting healthy is not a lifestyle overhaul

$
0
0

It's the new year and that always means you'll want to get healthy — again. January is like the Monday of all Mondays: It's really hard not to want to be inspired to change some part of our efforts to get healthy.

Let me help you build momentum so you can still desire to get healthy come February — because the average person who sets an intention to get healthy in January gives it up by mid-February.

I totally get it, by the way — why we give up in February. Change is hard and it can be exhausting without seeing any successful results for all the effort you are putting forth. I have a small feeling that if we were to change our approach to getting healthy this new year, we might be more successful come February.

What if we decided not to wipe the slate clean and start over, but rather we decided to only change one behavior?

Let me give you a few ideas that come to my mind:

  • What if we decide to just start drinking water when we reach for the juice or soda?
  • What if we decide to change into our exercise clothes before we leave the office and go for a walk around our neighborhood when we pull into the driveway?
  • What if we decide to always put a vegetable on our plate for dinner, regardless of how "unhealthy" our meal might be?

Success is contagious

It's such a good feeling to have inside. When was the last time you felt successful? Didn't it feel really good, positive and motivating?

What if the only secret we needed to keep our New Year's resolutions was to pick only one small change to implement? It's super easy to start completely over, to fill our grocery cart with only organic and non-GMO foods. It's super easy to join a gym and go to group exercise classes.

You know what's hard? Sticking to your plan when life happens.

Life is going to happen. I'm sure you know what I mean.

  • Your kid is going to forget his lunch, and you'll have to give up workout time to go deliver it during your lunch.
  • Your in-laws are going to want you to come over when you had planned to go grocery shopping.
  • Your boss is going to want you to finish the project by the end of the week, so that means you'll have to work on it tonight and not pop in the Insanity DVD.

Life happens, and when it does, we trade in our plans to accommodate. What if we didn't have to trade in our plans because our plan to get healthy was only one thing — not a whole lifestyle we had to change. Yes, getting healthy is a lifestyle change, but what the successful don't tell you is that lifestyle didn't change all at once. Those that are successful built momentum with one change at a time.

Make one change at a time

That's the secret to success that lasts: Make one change at a time.

Don't fall into the temptation to change everything at once. That never works — you could probably tell me that, right? Pick one behavior and do that. Get really good at it and then (only then!) consider adding another new healthy behavior.

Here are a few things that my clients have chosen:

  • Go for a walk in the morning.
  • Drink one less teaspoon of sugar and cream in their coffee.
  • Drink a glass of water in the morning.
  • Eat some type of protein for breakfast.
  • Stretch before going to bed.

There really are a million ways that you can start being healthy. Pick one that is simple and doable. Be successful at it, and then add in another. One day, you'll wake up and realize that you have completely changed your lifestyle and you're the healthiest person you know.
