The exact day (and time) to log on for love in 2016

0

"Aren't your afraid of being alone forever?" your nosy-but-well-meaning aunt asks you at the dinner table. "Whatever happened to what's-his-name? I thought he'd make a good husband."

If you're over it (and I totally get it), then you might want to mark Jan. 3, 2016, on your calendar. That's the day online dating websites OKCupid and Match say is the best to find love, because that's when the most eligible men are online looking for love.

"This heavy influx of traffic falls within Match's 'Peak Season,' which spans from December 25 to February 14 annually, when the world's largest dating site sees a 60% spike in new members," a rep for Match said in a press release.

More: MouseMingle is the new dating site for Disney lovers only

Plus, it's the middle of cuffing season, the special time of year when people seek out cuddle partners to keep them warm during the frigid winter months.

While the online dating sites both agree Jan. 3 is the best day to find love, they don't agree on the perfect time. According to Match, the best time for love is at exactly 8:52 p.m. EST, while OKCupid says the best time is at 5 p.m. EST. So, what are we to do? Just split the difference and log on about 6:30 p.m., I'd say.

And if you don't find a potential partner that day? Well, you still have another 10 months before Thanksgiving rolls around again... and if all else fails, you can just rent a boyfriend for the day.

Slow Cooker Sunday: Loaded hot-and-sour soup is a complete meal in a bowl

This soup has so many goodies in it I hardly know where to start when eating it. The broth is slow-cooked with fresh ginger, garlic, soy sauce and sesame oil, which give it a wonderful Asian flavor.

And the taste of hot-and-sour comes from the red pepper flakes that seem to get spicier as they cook, along with the tang of the rice vinegar.

As a bonus, this meal also comes with noodles, which is one of my favorite things about the soup, because it tastes so good along with the broth.

The flavor of the broth complements the chicken, veggies and noodles with every bite.

Serves 2

Prep time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 3 hours | Total time: 3 hours 15 minutes

  • 1-1/2 teaspoons peeled and minced ginger root
  • 1 garlic clove, diced
  • 1/4 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 pinches dried red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce

  • 3 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 (8-ounce) can bamboo shoots, drained
  • 1 cup carrots, sliced about 1/4 inch thick
  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cooked and shredded
  • 3 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup shredded napa cabbage
  • 1/2 cup Chinese pea pods
  • 1/2 cup white beech mushrooms (or sliced regular white mushrooms)
  • 2 servings Thai stir-fry rice noodles, cooked al dente, according to the package instructions, for the serving bowl
  • 1/2 cup green onion, chopped, for garnish
  • 1 sliced red jalapeño, for garnish

Directions:

  1. To a slow cooker, add the chicken broth, ginger root, garlic, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, soy sauce, salt, rice vinegar, carrots and bamboo shoots. Stir together.
  2. Turn the slow cooker on to the 3-hour setting, and cover with the lid.
  3. After the soup has cooked for 2 hours, to a small bowl, add the cornstarch and water. Stir until a thick mixture forms. Uncover the slow cooker, and stir in the cornstarch mixture. Then add the egg through a slotted spoon to the soup. Add the chicken, stir, and cover with the lid.
  4. After the soup has cooked in total for 2-1/2 hours, add the cabbage, pea pods and mushrooms, stir, and cover back up with the lid.
  5. Just before serving, fill each serving bowl with cooked noodles.
  6. To serve, ladle the hot soup over the noodles, and top with green onion and slices of jalapeño.

From frenetic thrillers to female-centric comedy, there's something for everyone coming to a screen near your couch.

Mr. Robot: Shomi

Image: Giphy.com

I can't wait to get into Mr. Robot when Shomi streams the first season on Jan. 8. Directed by The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo's Neil Arden Oplev, the show stars actor Rami Malek, who plays the oddball hacker Elliot Alderson — a character with social anxiety disorder who forges connections to the world around him via a computer screen. Things start to go haywire in this cyber-thriller when Alderson is recruited by an anarchist organization, led by Christian Slater as Mr. Robot, to help destroy corporate America as we know it.

Grace and Frankie Season 2: Netflix

Grace and Frankie will be returning to their usual antics with a second season on Netflix Canada in 2016. Thrust together in an unlikely roommate situation when their husbands come out as secret lovers, the two mismatched women are forced to contend with each other on a daily basis in the first season — leading both to catastrophe and endearing moments of genuine female friendship. Hopefully, we'll get to see them getting into trouble with comical dates gone wrong and the cringingly awkward but hilarious moments that made Season 1 so fun to watch.

Fuller House: Netflix

Fuller House

So this is happening... I'm not sure how long I'm going to last watching Full House's stars — Bob Saget, John Stamos, Lori Loughlin, Dave Coulier, Candace Cameron Bure and Jodie Sweetin — attempt to resuscitate the show two decades later. But I'd be doing my elementary-school self — and an entire generation of women who used to have inappropriate crushes on Uncle Jessie as little girls — a disservice if I didn't, at least, give Fuller House a chance when it premieres on Netflix Canada on Feb. 26.

CraveTV landed slick Showtime financial drama Billions, which features a stacked cast including Paul Giamatti, Damian Lewis, Maggie Siff and Swedish-Canadian Malin Ackerman. In this tense new series, expect to hear Giamatti — who plays U.S. attorney Chuck Rhoades — utter heavy dialogue like: "A good matador doesn't kill a fresh bull. You wait until he's been stuck a few times," as he goes after flashy hedge fund kingpin Bobby "Axe" Axelrod (Lewis). Pencil in Jan. 17 on your calendar, because that's when this fresh new series debuts.

I lived by my New Year's resolutions for a year and it changed my life

0
0

I put energy into the endeavor with intensity and consistency — for a few days in a row. Something happened, someone happened or I became tired and let it slip for the next few days.

My White Board of World Domination — and the shrinking checkbook balance — would catch my attention, and I would dive back into the endeavor with intensity and consistency — for a few days.

I let more of my choices and actions be directed by procrastination and worry than were led by my goals and dreams. My mediocre efforts produced mediocre results, and mediocre was not where I wanted to be in my journey.

“The place you are at right at this moment is the place you choose to be.”

I had heard these words at a conference in the spring, but I did not want to accept them. There had to be another reason I was not reaching my goals. Other people were getting better breaks. Other people had better situations to enhance their efforts. Other people were intent on sabotaging my efforts.

It was when I started reviewing my year and began planning for the New Year once again that I accepted the words and my responsibility in my journey.

How I made the change

  1. “The person in my way is me, and the way I am going to move forward is to get out of my way.” Once I accepted my responsibility and admitted my role in the problem, I made room for the focus to move forward.
  2. “I will get to a new place if I choose to take new actions.” The actions — or inactions — I am taking and have been taking are what brought me here. I have to do new and different actions and activities to get me to that next level or next place.
  3. “The person with my answer is the one looking at me from the mirror.” I can look to others to fix it. I can look to others to make the difference. But I am the one holding the power for my journey.
  4. “I can, if I will.” It can happen if I make the necessary investments. I have to take the actions. I have to make the choices. I have to have the will to get me to my desired destination.

It is not comfortable admitting my part in not reaching my dreams; but in admitting my part, I make the path possible for my dreams to become my reality.

How will you create the change in your New Year?

Why I choose a 'word of the year' to live by

0
0

Two years ago the pendulum started swinging the other direction. I started to realize when I don’t make any effort to change the status quo — do you know what happens? Nothing! Two years ago, I got tired of nothing happening. Stagnation sucks.

Around that time, I saw a blog post related to the concept of claiming a “Word of the Year.” The idea intrigued me. I liked the simplicity, and I was inspired by the possibilities that might make themselves available because of that lack of structure.

I thought long and hard about my word. I considered what irons I had in the fire: where I thought I was headed and what I’d like to accomplish. I spent time in prayer. I spent time talking to close friends and family members. I took this really seriously while at the same time fighting back cynicism and doubt.

I hoped for the best.

That first year my word was “foundations,” and it truly inspired and motivated me in ways that I had neither experienced before nor thought possible. That first year convinced me to try it again.

This past year, I went through a similar process — minus the cynicism and doubt — in trying to decide on a word. The word I operated under was “reach.”

It’s almost embarrassing to share that. It’s almost too simple and simplistic at first glance. I discovered so much about that word and how it deeply impacted my life this past year.

The word "reach" is a very active verb

Most obviously, it implies an outward movement, as in reaching towards a goal or an object. It also contains the potential for movement directed inside, as in digging inside for strength or determination or creativity. You can’t “reach” and be static — even just sitting in a chair and reaching up requires moving muscles and changing your focus.

Digging deeper into the word provided me with even more thoughts and ideas that were truly exciting, such as:

  • To encompass
  • Make an impression on and communicate with
  • To strain or stretch after something
  • To draw towards
  • To arrive at, implying the end of a journey of sorts — the result of travel and discovery

"Reach" is also a noun

Especially meaning...

  • The ability or power of someone to do or achieve
  • Growth, development or increase.

And the etymology of the word includes “to stretch oneself.” The definition explains quite a bit for me about the past year. After prayerful consideration, reaching was the “bar” I used for any activity I undertook or considered.

“Will this take me out of my comfort zone?”

“What am I straining towards here?”

“Will this new endeavor bring growth?”

Not surprisingly, most of my experiences centered around blogging. They included putting myself out there in ways I never have or would have thought of in past times such as:

  • Working under specific deadlines
  • Pitching ideas and concepts and words to editors and strangers who had no “heart” for the blood, sweat and tears that go into each piece
  • Learning challenging skills because I needed to know them
  • Meeting and talking to new and/or influential people about my endeavors
  • Portraying confidence when it was required and seeking help when it was necessary
  • Growing into the confident, capable woman God has called me to be!

I’ve started considering and praying about 2016 already, this time with excitement and optimism!

It’s amazing what one word can do!

Three steps to feeling confident dating a younger man

0
0

Drop the labels and the cats. Your pussy cat is whatever you choose it to be. It depends on your needs and wants at any age.

Now, if you are a traditionalist, you may wish to consider your children's feelings and not date their best friends or someone younger than them. For the single ladies, if they never put a ring on it, consider yourself a modernist. You are among a growing population of divas with full lives and entertaining stories to tell. This ain't your mother's coffee chat!

Many married ladies end up in arguments around this age that lead to divorces. Single ladies start to see their steady flames slow down.

Instead of having the traditional coffee chat and night out with the girls complaining about your journey into the puma and cougar life, it's time to shave the pussy cat and look for the passion of your tiger or panther from within. We are talking about the spirit of your passion. Remember the spirit that woke you up in the morning to put on lipstick and kiss your lips winking at yourself.

Step one: Flirt

Today's young men do not have the stereotypical issues as their elders. They aren't programmed by a Barbie image or stereotypes from yesterday. They are attracted to all different types of women: sizes, shapes, races, cultures and more. Young men approach me all the time. Some ladies may shy away with insecurities or stigmas from childhood. Let go, release and relax. There is nothing wrong with flirting and entering into a conversation. It may even lead to coffee, lunch or dinner — and dessert!

Step two: Find that dress that makes you feel like shaking your booty in a music video

Oh, stop! You know very well you grew up on things like MTV, Dancin' on Air and Soul Train. Now, get the young man in your life to show you how to download all your favorite music on iTunes. Try writing your own sexy theme song! What makes you sexy — your lips, hips or the way you sip? Find a recording studio, use step one and record your song. Now, it's time to shop for that dress or simply add accessories to your favorite one.

Step three: Get healthy and happy

Take care of you! If you don't eat well and exercise, you won't feel sexy, sensual or even friendly. Try something simple, like increasing your water intake by a glass or two. You will be amazed at how your energy will slowly build, cleansing from all those puma/cougar coffee chats. Find a fitness or wellness center. Take a stroll to appreciate the parks or explore a new town. Break your routine; this is how you restart, refresh and remember that you are happier with a healthy heart.

Step four: Just do it

Stop talking about it! Just do whatever the steps are for following your passion. It you don't know the steps, Google it or ask Siri. Write the book. Go to Europe. Start the business. Yes, it's that simple. If you think about all the times you have sat around talking about your journey into being a fierce cat, you have wasted a lot of time. You could be sharing, learning and growing with your young man, whom you have attracted by simply following these steps.

5 New Year's resolutions for your marriage

0
0

The new year is a perfect time to sit down with your spouse and set some New Year’s resolutions for revitalizing and improving your marriage. No matter where you are in your marriage journey — whether you are happy and healthy or experiencing bumps in the road — recommitting to your shared goals and identifying as a married couple is critical to your ongoing success. Below are five New Year’s resolutions for your marriage.

1. Recommit

Many marriage experts say successful married couples recommit to their marriages on a daily basis. No matter what has happened before, each morning is a new opportunity to love your partner and recommit to your lives together. Most of us just don’t have the time to do a daily recommitment. Instead, take the opportunity of the new year to remind each other that you are committed to your relationship as a married couple. Reminisce about your relationship from the very beginning and tell loving stories about how you met, your wedding and other joyful times. Also, take a moment to revisit difficult times, but look at them through the lens of, “Wow! We made it through! Isn’t that great? We must really love each other!”

2. Fight fair

Most married couples fight, and even if a couple doesn’t fight out loud, partners often have silent fights that can still be traumatizing to both. The key is not to avoid fighting entirely, but to fight fairly. Take the new year as a moment to set boundaries and rules about how you will approach disagreements. Remember that you both deserve to have your feelings respected and heard, but since you are in a marriage, you also need to respect your spouse’s communications, needs and sensitivities. Fighting is inevitable, but neither of you needs to endure long-term trauma or risk tearing the integrity of your marriage by being sloppy about it.

3. Get closer

Intimacy within marriage goes through many phases, but all agree that some form of intimacy is a core element of a happy, healthy marriage. Intimacy can mean many things, from a loving hug when you’ve had a bad day to good, old-fashioned sex. It’s no surprise that men typically think in terms of sex and, therefore, sometimes miss their wife's cues that they need more physical connection in addition to bedroom time. Talk about intimacy in your marriage. Tell your partner what you really want and listen when he tells you what he would like. Don’t get defensive or start putting numbers and restrictions on each other, but just listen deeply and commit to making an effort to adding more intimacy into your lives so that you both get what you need.

4. Make time

Many married couples find themselves spending more time apart, especially when there are kids and jobs to juggle. Date night, which might have been something you did years ago, might have fallen by the wayside, and instead, you sit in separate rooms scrolling through your individual technical devices. No matter how tired you are at the end of the day or on the weekend, remember to nurture your marriage by making time for each other. It can be doing something simple like going for a walk together or grabbing a coffee, or it can be a formal date. It can even just be a commitment to sit together on the couch and talk to each other without devices for 15 minutes. Whatever you do, make time for your marriage.

5. Give appreciation

It’s completely natural to fall into habits in a marriage and forget to verbally appreciate your spouse. All of us do this from time to time, especially when busyness overtakes us. We start to just assume that our partner “should” take out the trash or “should” cook dinner, instead of remembering to appreciate the fact that he did. Using words of appreciation seems like such a simple thing to do, but it slips away in many marriages. Make a resolution together to appreciate the little things you do for each other. It might feel a little bit silly or forced at first, but do your best to stick with it and genuinely speak words of encouragement, thanks and love to your partner.

The New Year is a perfect time to work on some goals for improving your marriage. I wish you much luck and success in this endeavor!

What you need to know about essential oils

0
0

Research is conclusively showing more and more benefits may be obtained from their topical and aromatic usage. Major medical centers, including Johns Hopkins University, Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic, have nursing staff trained in the use of therapeutic essential oils. I have personally witnessed some astounding benefits with proper and directed usage.

What many people forget, however, is that an essential oil is the true “essence" or "extract” of a plant. While wholly natural, this extract is one of nature’s chemicals and needs to be respected as such. Some oils have major contraindications, such as wintergreen. Did you know that wintergreen is actually salicylic acid or aspirin? As such, it is the oil that should never be used by someone on any type of blood-thinning medication.

However, with increased consciousness around healthful living, fraudulent products claiming to prevent, treat or cure a disease almost always appear. Remember the term "snake oil salesman"?

So, how do you know what to purchase? And how do you know you are purchasing premium oils? How do you trust what you are told about them?

First, we recommend purchasing oils from certified aromatherapists, preferably associated with the National Association of Holistic Aromatherapy. An aromatherapist is someone who has been trained in the art and science of essential oils and maintains an eye toward purity and safety. Experienced and knowledgeable aromatherapists have ideally completed at least 200 hours of training, which include the study of anatomy and physiology. The knowledge of oil components and their effect on specific regions of the body cannot be underestimated.

Second, there has been some upheaval in the essential oil world with two well-known distributors receiving warning letters from the FDA in regards to making both purity and pharmaceutical claims about their oils. The addition of non-aromatic compounds or blending with cheaper oils from different parts of the plant or species to help reduce price is common.

Here are a few examples of how purity may be measured:

  • Gas chromatography. Identifies individual organic components of the oils, which validate purity.
  • Specific gravity. Measures the weight at 25 degrees C and compares to known pure gravities.
  • Refractive index. Measures the speed at which light passing through the oil is refracted.

These tests and others can determine the authenticity and purity of an essential oil — however, they are very expensive to run. The average consumer cannot pick up a $20,000 mass spectrometer at the corner drugstore to test what they have brought home. A savvy, concerned consumer should, instead, inquire what steps the distributor takes to ensure purity before oils are brought to the market. You have the right to ask!

Are there any other ways of doing a quick check on the oils you may have already purchased? You will often see Internet recommendations to freeze the oils so see separation of components — however, this is nonsense that is unfortunately propagated by those without a chemistry education or firm understanding of essential oils. There are oils that will freeze solid or at the very least crystallize at low temperatures and become cloudy. This is not an indication of inferiority.

Here are two tests you can do at home to help you weed out any obvious pretenders:

  1. Texture and feel. Place a drop of oil between your fingertips. It should feel oily, not water based. There should be no evaporation. However, this test alone is not a guarantee.
  2. White paper test. Place a few drops of your essential oil on a white piece of paper and let sit overnight. The next morning, check for any residue. Pure essential oils will not leave a residue, where as petroleum-based extenders and solvents will.
  3. Contrast and compare. Educate yourself by contrasting and comparing essential oils from various brands. Check the species of plant used on the label as there are differences in which plant is used — for example clove leaf versus clove bud.

So, as you can see, let the buyer beware. Premium, pure essential oils are very expensive for a reason. If you are dedicated to the use of essential oils in your life, pursuing aromatherapy education is a very wise move. The National Association of Holistic Aromatherapy offers a list of approved schools and educators. Visit NAHA to learn more.

Your sex life undergoes a dramatic transformation when ruling planet Mars enters Scorpio on Jan. 3. You could discover that your bond is more physical than emotional, that you have a problem opening up emotionally, or you may decide that changing sex preferences or gender is the answer. Mars in Scorpio demands a deep and uncompromising honesty with your partner and more importantly with yourself. You can no longer pretend to be happy being someone you don't recognize in the mirror. Bold moves and decisions near your birthday will give you a whole new lease on your love life.

You're understandably gun shy around the issue of relationships given what you went through from October 2012 to October 2015. Many Taurus people broke up or divorced during this period. However, you're on a fresh page and can't afford to live in fear of someone walking out on you. If your current partnership is going to work, then you need to be who you are without apology — and that includes making decisions that won't always be copacetic. Learning to compromise without compromising yourself is the secret to any lasting partnership. It's a practice you'll be struggling to perfect throughout 2016.

Saturn in Sagittarius signifies a time of reckoning in your relationships. It will force you to repeat the same familiar patterns until you wake up and smell the coffee. You may think you know where things are heading in a relationship but expect a rude awakening when Mars turns retrograde on April 17. This could be a time of drama and tears or it could be when you choose to fight for someone you love. It all depends on whether your feelings are true or not. You'll say it's up to him, but actually it's up to you. The reason you're drawn to unavailable men is because you tend to be unavailable yourself. This is something that will be put to the test from May 27 to June 29. You'll want to save the day, but you mustn't. Focus instead on being in their corner and showing them the faith they can't show themselves. Meanwhile it looks like you'll be learning from your own mistakes on Aug. 24. You need to reach out more in 2016. Challenging Saturn aspects in March, June and September will be stirring up isolationist tendencies and you don't need to be any more of a hermit than you already are. Counterbalance this energy by making yourself get out and about. Meeting and greeting needn't be superficial. In fact, these are the months when spiritual connections with like-minded people will deepen your friendships and associations. You don't have to retreat to a cave to connect with the divine — not when it will show up in the faces and souls of people you see every day.

Mars retrograde from April 17 to June 29 stirs up trouble with men in your life. This could be your dad, your boss or your partner. Once again you'll be expected to jump through the hoops to prove your love and loyalty. Skip it. You've done two-plus years of this and if this person is still finding fault, then you'll never win him over. In fact, the less you react to his needling the more likely he'll stop it. Remember: Negative attention is still attention. Only respond when he says something nice and you'll see him change his tune.

Are you more in love with being in love than love itself? It's a question worth asking in March and September when eclipses push your relationship to the limit. Your first reaction will be to leave. It's what you do when things don't go your way. However, Saturn in Sagittarius insists that you stay put and work things out. Being forced to be there for your lover or spouse forces you to be there for yourself. Pisces people often search but rarely find, so it will be nice to discover that love the reality is better than love the fantasy.

On March 3 you will feel like you have finally accomplished what you set out to achieve. It could be a professional success, an amazing relationship or a trip to some exotic locale. It will be an extraordinary moment, and you should memorize the feeling because Mars turning retrograde on April 17 will throw all of that into question. This is when you'll be dragged back into a situation you thought you had freed yourself from. No worries. Instead of defeating you, this will serve to galvanize you. Vanderpump Rules' Schwartz and Sandoval make a permanently bad decision

More: Vanderpump Rules' Tom was completely insensitive to Ariana on her birthday

Sandoval and Schwartz really wanted to show how committed they are to Ariana and Katie, respectively, by getting tattoos (whilst drunk) in their honor. Where did they get the ink? Oh, you know, on their butts. That's right, Sandoval got "A" for Ariana and Schwartz got "Bubba" for Katie.

I don't know what's worse. The fact that Sandoval's tat looks like bacon (Ariana agrees) or that the Toms followed in Jax's footsteps by permanently etching their significant others' name/initial onto their bodies. What were they thinking? Granted, this definitely shows just how committed they are to Katie and Ariana, but doesn't everyone know that getting some ink is basically a relationship curse? Also, it's kind of tacky, but to each his/her own.

Now, seeing as Katie and Schwartz are engaged, I guess the tattoo isn't getting in the way of their relationship. As for Ariana and Sandoval? Well, they are still together, but she definitely didn't dig her man's tat in her honor. Actually, she referred to it as a piece of bacon and wants him to get rid of it, stat. Can you blame her?

Clearly, Jax has a lot of influence over his buddies. OK, not really, because it was done of their own volition, but still. I mean, Jax is still getting tattoos of names. Most recently, he got both the Toms' names inked on his body. His tat reads: "Tom, Tom & i". No, that isn't a joke.

There is something about SUR workers getting tattoos and those of people they really care about. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for a great tattoo (I myself have a few), but the Toms getting "A" and "Bubba" tattooed on their butts? Maybe not the best move.

That said, they definitely could've done something much worse. Plus, now Ariana and Katie know how much they truly care. Oh, and Sandoval will probably constantly be asked by Pretty Little Liars fans why he has "A" on his ass. Hey, that's the price you pay, right?

"So hopefully something will be happening pretty soon... I can't tell you what it is yet," she said.

"There were talks in the past about it and we had done the New Kids On The Block and Backstreet Boys tour in the past," he told to E! News. "I think this would be the last hurrah — the two big groups from the late '90s. Maybe do a world tour, stadiums, stuff like that and do a package together."

RHOA's Porsha Williams scares off her new man

0

Porsha may not meet the traditional definition of housewife, but she is determined to find a guy to replace Kordell Stewart. She might not have much luck in this department if she continues to spend time with the current man in her life, as he unfortunately does not appear to be all that interested in commitment.

More: 5 Reasons why the RHOA ladies can't stand Porsha Williams

As fans may recall, Porsha met her new beau, Oliver, while she and her fellow Real Housewives of Atlanta stars were living it up down in Miami. Oliver seems to be smitten by his new girl's assets, including the one that she so brazenly twerked in his general direction on their first night together. Fans of the show can't help but wonder if he's only in it for the fringe benefits and not for the long haul.

RHOA's Oliver

Oliver certainly didn't do much to quell RHOA fans' fears. He adored Porsha's casual, around-the-house outfit that she just so happened to be wearing during their Skype call. And when Porsha mentioned that she'd recently lost seven pounds, Oliver worried that this might have a negative impact on the shape of her butt.

More: Kim Fields gets surprisingly good advice from Phaedra Parks

Although both parties engaged in a lot of playful flirting, Oliver froze up the moment Porsha mentioned the possibility of a serious relationship. The connection on the Skype call suddenly deteriorated, and that was the end of that. While it's entirely possible that technology failed Porsha, RHOA fans on Twitter believe that Oliver used one of the oldest tricks in the book in hopes of avoiding any talk about settling down with Porsha:

Porsha's Bad Connection

It's entirely possible that the connection really did drop out at the worst possible time... but it's not likely. Oliver's intentions seem suspect. That being said, Porsha is clearly head-over-heels for her new Latin lover. Any remaining feelings she may have had for Duke Williams were clearly left behind in Miami.

It's hard to say whether Oliver will stick around after filming for RHOA ends, but things don't look too promising for Porsha. It might be time for Porsha to cut her losses and look for a new guy.

Jessa Duggar's home birth on Jill and Jessa: Counting On stirs outrage

0
0

Fans of the Duggars are very familiar with the concept of home birth, as they've witnessed Anna successfully deliver multiple children. Michelle has also delivered several kids at home, and she believes that this approach to childbirth allows for a much faster recovery. However, home birth is accompanied by numerous risks, the chief of which is the lack of proximity to life-saving equipment. According to several Duggar critics, the risks of home birth outweigh the rewards. These concerned viewers believe that the Duggars are putting others at risk by using their television show to promote home birth.

The delivery of Spurgeon Seewald certainly made for an interesting episode. Fans of the show enjoyed seeing Jessa (who previously received praise for her commitment to remaining active while pregnant) try to kick-start labor by power walking with her siblings. The delivery was long and exhausting, but its aftermath was even more terrifying. Jessa bled way more than anticipated and was forced to visit the hospital.

More: Anna Duggar may have sad motives for appearing on Jill & Jessa: Counting On

Many fans found the scene featuring Jessa's childbirth emergency very disturbing, but for different reasons. While several were concerned about Jessa's health, others felt that she was paying the price for her decision to pursue home birth. According to these critics, it would have been much better for Jessa to spend the entirety of the delivery at the hospital. A few especially vocal individuals took to Twitter to claim that, by advocating for home birth, Jessa had (in addition to putting herself and her baby at risk) put dangerous ideas into the heads of viewers, who may be more likely to pursue home birth after seeing it featured on Jill and Jessa: Counting On.

Although many critics have spoken ill of Jessa's decision to deliver little Spurgeon at home, others believe that it is important for her to retain control over the birthing experience. If the hospital is deemed necessary, it is always an option — and it's an option both Jessa and Jill decided to pursue. The series did not necessarily glorify home birth, as it showed the very scary situation in which the new mom found herself. After seeing the final episode of Jill and Jessa: Counting On — and a few previous home birth situations on 19 Kids and Counting — viewers should have a good idea of the risks that can accompany a home-based delivery.

What U.S. Customs does with our confiscated food will break your heart

0
0

As an avowed food lover, my first thought on vacation is usually about what snacks and delicacies I can bring home. Unfortunately you can't bring home any foods you want. Many edibles, especially produce, cheese and meat, are illegal here and may be confiscated by U.S. Customs upon your return. This is mostly done to protect U.S. crops and livestock from different insects and diseases they don't have immunity from.

More: 9 Foods you can't bring back from your overseas vacation

So what happens to your painstakingly selected French cheese sampler that was confiscated, cooler and all? Or that expensive serrano ham you were going to give to your bff as her "I'm sorry I invited my husband to Spain instead of you but you're still my #1" gift?

First, here's what we wish the Customs agents did with that food:

Have an elaborate feast

Airport food is notoriously overpriced and tasteless. Hopefully all that confiscated food is being enjoyed by hungry Customs officials, who can forgo the Chili's Too at lunchtime in favor of some fresh pineapple, Parma ham and Greek feta.

Shower their friends and family with gifts

Customs officials work long hours, especially during the holidays. But they could show their families they care (and save time spent shopping) by re-gifting the items that are confiscated. Missing your friend's daughter's 1st birthday will seem like less of a travesty when they're gifted with a package of Chinese beef candy (hey, they don't get to choose what people are trying to smuggle into the country).

christmas present
Image: giphy.com

Donate it to the poor

Food pantries are overloaded with boring stuff like plain pasta and canned peas. But add some donated Italian prosciutto and Parmigiano-Reggiano, and suddenly those pantry staples turn into one heck of a meal.

More: Alyssa Milano takes on airports and their breast milk laws: Is she right?

Recycle it into airplane food

Instead of a $4 bag of chips, Customs officials could create Lunchables-style delicacy packs filled with confiscated charcuterie, tropical fruits and cheese to be sold on flights. Slightly suspicious smuggled treats are still probably more palatable than the random selection of goods you get in the cheapest snack box available on most planes.

Sell it on the airport employee black market

"I'll trade you this wedge of French Brie from Terminal A for those 3.2-ounce travel-size shampoo bottles you nabbed in Terminal C." Hey, it could happen!

Image: giphy.com

All of these would be cool with me — at least those confiscated goods are still being used, right? But as far as we know (ahem!), U.S. Customs agents aren't doing any of these things with our confiscated food. Here's what they are doing with it instead: They're destroying it.

food confiscated by customs

food confiscated by customs

It's certainly sad that all that food goes to waste. But I guess realizing that if it gets confiscated, literally no one will get to enjoy your smuggled passion fruit makes it easier to resist trying to bring some home in the first place — and gives us an excuse to really indulge in those exotic foods while we're on vacation. You literally can't take it with you, folks.

5 Food trends to watch in 2016

0
0

Food and drink trendspotters and industry folk recently shared their predictions for what Canadians will be seeing more of on restaurant tables in 2016. Take a look:

1. Eat your vegetables

Kale may have reigned supreme for a while, but it's safe to say Canadians can expect more variety in the new year as the craze for meat-free mains hits tables. "It was kale on everything, kale this and kale that, kale chips. I think squash is going to come back with gangbusters. There's so many varieties. It's easy to grow here in Canada," Donna Dooher, president and CEO of Restaurants Canada, tells The Canadian Press.

Global food trendspotter Christine Couvelier adds that Canadians should expect "a continuation on understanding fresh and local and being very innovative and creative in the kitchen." And what kind of vegetables should we look out for? Expect dishes to feature everything ranging from sunchokes to Jerusalem artichokes.

2. Toast, toast and more toast

Toast

Toast

Think toast is just a quick, easy meal? Think again. Restaurants across Canada have been giving the humble breakfast staple a makeover, topping it with everything ranging from upscale bone marrow spreads to pickled anchovies. "It is certainly a very innovative dish to develop recipes and thoughts around. I'm watching it as the ingredient of the year," says Couvelier.

More: We tried toast broth so you don't have to (and it was surprisingly good)

3. Bone broth is the new black

When you think of broth, if you're anything like me, you probably imagine OXO cubes. But Canadian foodies are expected to go nuts over a broth more like the old-school type your grandmother would make, as chefs roast then boil bones to release a healthy, protein-dense broth. The trend has already hit New York, where chef Marco Canora serves takeout cups of bone broth at his new bone broth bar, Brodo.

Expect chefs this year to take full advantage of the potential of different bone broths in cooking: "You can put them in soups or stews," says Couvelier. "Chefs are putting them on their menus, and they can add things to them like coconut milk or beet juice or ginger juice. And just a couple of months ago, bone broth started showing up in the stock section of grocery stores."

4. Ice isn't just ice anymore

Expect to see more ice cubes infused with flavours that get slowly released into your drink as the cube melts this year, says Couvelier. She anticipates that the new craze in ice cubes, flavoured with everything ranging from smoke to alcohol, will give you a more dynamic flavour, as you're getting "a different flavour at different times when you sip the drink, because it would change as the ice melted a little bit."

5. Yogourt goes savoury

Forget vanilla. Chefs are starting to take advantage of the full flavour potential of yogourt. "When you think of it as an ingredient application, it's brilliant," says Couvelier. Expect to see yogourt in everything ranging from salad dressings to innovative sauces, as yet another breakfast staple gets dressed up for dinner in 2016.

Renée Zellweger finally opens up about those plastic surgery rumors

The actress came under fire last year when she revealed her new look at the Elle Awards. While she insisted the changes were the result of only weight loss, the dramatic change caused plastic surgery rumors to abound. Now, Zellweger is finally addressing the controversy in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly.

"What good comes from knowing that something like that happened?" she said, answering herself, "Less fear. Sure."

She continued on to say that even though her appearance was trending on Twitter at the time, she avoided getting caught up in the coverage.

More: Renee Zellweger comments on speculation she’s drastically altered her appearance

"All that I know about is what friends and associates would send in texts and emails," she said. "They were sending support, which means that I must have needed it, and I prefer it that way. So when people come up to me to ask, 'How did that feel?' — I don’t know, and I like it like that. I don't know. I know it sounds pretty unlikely that a person might be able to make herself, I guess, keep clear of those words or of that experience, but I have and it takes effort, but I have succeeded."

Zellweger, who is set to star in Bridget Jones' Baby, the sequel to her breakout role Bridget Jones' Diary, said her weight loss will be used in the film's plot.

"We all really loved the notion that Bridget, 15 years [since the first film], had finally reached her ideal weight... somewhere between a UK size 10 or 12," Bridget Jones' Baby director Sharon Maguire explained. "But still hadn’t solved any of her issues about love and loneliness."

Harmful bacteria may be hiding inside your favorite cookies

0
0

Even though I'm meticulous about cross-contamination, put my leftovers in the fridge right away and wash my fruits and veggies thoroughly before cooking them, I'm pretty nonchalant about dry packaged goods. But new findings show that eating dry packaged goods can come with some unwelcome consequences, by way of bacteria.

Researchers at the University of Georgia recently discovered that salmonella and other harmful bacteria can live in dry goods like cookies and cracker sandwiches, which is strange, because it was previously thought that such bacteria preferred a moist environment. Even worse, these contaminants can sometimes survive for up to six months.

More: More bad news for Chipotle: 120 New illnesses strike college students

So where does that leave us? There are a few things you can do to protect yourself from contaminated dry goods.

Buy from sources you trust

If you're concerned about buying contaminated goods to begin with, you should make sure you're purchasing your food from sources you trust. Think grocery store down the street, not the dude hawking Ritz crackers outside the entrance to the subway.

Check before you chow down

Sometimes just taking a sniff of or look at your food can help you determine if it's safe to eat. You do the same thing with a package of chicken or carton of milk; taking the extra few seconds to check out your packaged dry foods is a good idea too.

More: Dove holiday chocolates recalled thanks to Grinchy allergens

Wash your hands before touching your food

It's obvious that you should wash your hands after handling raw meat, but it's a good idea to wash your hands before you touch any foods too. If you have any germs or bacteria on your hands and then go open up a pack of Oreos, that matter can be transferred to your food. And, as we now know, it could live there for up to six months, putting your health at risk every time you reach for a midnight snack.

Throw away compromised food

If you're thrifty, it can be hard to throw away food. But if the packaging of your dry goods has been compromised — whether you realize it has a tear and shared a grocery bag with some chicken or you go to eat it and realize there's a hole in the bag — you should toss it.

Stay up-to-date on recalls and food safety

Sometimes there's no way to tell if your food is safe or not (scary, I know!). To keep yourself and your family safe, make it your business to stay abreast of food recalls and food safety news. What we know about keeping our food safe is changing all the time, but keeping yourself informed can help prevent any illnesses.
