Teen Mom's Maci Bookout proposed to by ex Ryan?

Are Teen Mom stars Maci and Ryan considering a walk down the aisle? A recent exchange between the long-separated pair has led some to believe the parents of Bentley may be getting back together!

Maci Bookout

Maci Bookout cannot believe the tweets she's received from her ex, Ryan Edwards, over the past 24 hours. Marriage? Perhaps the father of Bentley has had a bit too much to drink, or maybe his Twitter account has been hacked?

"Maci Bookout marry me!" Ryan Edwards tweeted, seemingly out of the blue.

"Ur s**t got hacked BRO!" Maci Bookout responded in disbelief. "Outta ur mind haha."

Teen Mom 2's Jenelle Evans is married >>

Despite the surprise nature of the proposal, fans of Teen Mom likely know this is the first time in years both Maci and Ryan have been single. She split with Kyle King, who was often seen on MTV's Teen Mom as well, in September, while Ryan Edwards' relationship with Dalis Connell bit the dust earlier this month.

Ryan then mysteriously tweeted he "would never let that happen," which Maci failed to understand. He went on to explain, "It means that I want to get on one knee and tell you how much I love you."

"Twitter is not the place," the mother of 4-year-old Bentley shot back. "Ima kill u."

Nonetheless, Ryan added, "Never give up on what you believe is right... no matter what gets in the way!"

"Bentley" and other pop culture-inspired baby names>>

Even though Maci Bookout feared her ex's Twitter account may have been hacked, no further messages show evidence that was the case. However, when asked "you still drunk" by another Twitter user, Ryan replied in a typo-laden tweet, "iamready for are oarty."

Party? Sounds like someone may have had a little too much fun already!

Do you think Maci and Ryan should reconcile? Get engaged?

Against Me!'s Laura Jane Grace is enjoying her new life

When Tom Gabel made the announcement he was transsexual and decided to live his life as a woman, it shocked many people, including his fans. But seven months later, it looks like she doesn't regret a thing.

Tom Gabel

It was back in May when Against Me! lead singer Tom Gabel announced he would be, from here on out, known as Laura Jane Grace. The singer has made the transition and seems happier than she has ever been.

"Since coming out back in May, she's hit the road with Against Me! and begun work on the band's next album, reportedly called Transgender Dysphoria Blues," according to MTV. "She's also continued to undergo hormone therapy and settled in to her new life with her family in St. Augustine, Florida."

Grace and her wife, Heather, have stayed together as a couple, and they recently opened up their closet to MTV News and House of Style.

"I'm probably one of the luckiest transsexuals in the world; I have the same-sized shoe as my wife, so I can steal any of her shoes," she said.

Grace also said she has been transitioning to the lifestyle, including using an epilator for hair removal, and she can’t believe what women go through.

"It pulls the hair out," she told MTV. "I've been tattooed all over my body, nothing is more painful than this."

James Montgomery with MTV said through the entire interview, it almost seemed surprising how normal Grace's life is. In an interview in 2006, she seemed to foreshadow the struggle she would soon go through, telling MTV that "There is no pleasing everybody." But it looks like the Against Me! frontwoman is happy with her new life.

"My life improves every single day," she told MTV. "I try to make a step every single day, no matter how big or how small. It feels like I'm in control of my life, and I'm in control of my person, and that's empowering. Saying to someone 'I'm a transsexual,' is the most empowering thing I've ever felt in my whole life."

Nothing puts a damper on fitness faster than a boring exercise routine, so make your workouts stick by trying fun exercises this year. We've rounded up 10 fun possibilities, but the best routine is the one you enjoy — so keep trying new things until you find one you love. Hint: Look to all the fun activities you used to do during recess as a kid.

Nothing puts a damper on fitness faster than a boring exercise routine, so make your workouts stick by trying fun exercises this year.

Get a kick out of fitness

We've rounded up 10 fun possibilities, but the best routine is the one you enjoy — so keep trying new things until you find one you love. Hint: Look to all the fun activities you used to do during recess as a kid.

1

Kettlebells

One of the most effective fitness tools we've found, kettlebells will boost your cardio, sculpt your body and improve your strength with every move. Kettlebells come in a wide range of weights, giving you the ability to start easy and work your way up as your fitness soars. Our suggestion is to get the Empower Fitness 3-in-1 Kettlebell, which gives you five-, eight-, and 12-pound options. It also comes with Gin Miller's Swing Yourself Fit DVD, which features three different workouts that will change your body. Kettlebells will not only tone you from head-to-toe, they are also a fun way to bust fitness boredom.

Shape up with this kick-butt kettlebell workout>>

2

Rollerskating

Remember the good ol' days when all your friends had their birthday parties at the skating rink, and you spent hours racing around the floor? Recapture the fun by grabbing a pair of quads or inline skates and hitting the pavement. You'll love the feel of the wind in your hair, and you'll be psyched to know that the average 150-pound woman burns roughly 450 calories during an hour of skating.

3

Trampolining

Trampoline gyms like Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park are popping up all across the country. That's because jumping on a trampoline is excellent exercise — and it's just plain fun.

If you don't have a trampoline gym in your area, create your own jumping workout using a home trampoline. Representatives from Springfree Trampoline suggest performing a total-body strengthening workout incorporating straight jumps, seat drops, pike jumps, hands-and-knees drops and jumping jacks. A 20-minute routine will leave you feeling both exhilarated and worn out.

Try this trampoline workout for full-body fitness>>

4

Hula hooping

Hula hooping requires balance, coordination and core strength; plus, the constant movement boosts the heart rate for an effective cardio workout. Pick up a weighted hula hoop and hooping video to get moving.

Quirky workouts that get serious results>>

5

Dancing

Dancing is a great way to exercise while having a blast, and the best part is that you can do it anywhere there's music. Simply turn up your stereo and create your own routine to your favorite playlist.

If you need a little help to get your hips swaying, take a Zumba, hip-hop or barre ballet class at a recreation center. Leigh-Ann Plac, P.T., D.P.T. at The Hospital for Special Surgery's Rehabilitation and Performance Center points out that Zumba's incorporation of a wide variety of dance styles requires whole-body movements that help develop coordination, power, balance and aerobic fitness. Likewise, she notes that barre ballet helps boost balance, flexibility, core stability and strength using body weight resistance. Plus, you can do it practically anywhere.

6

Suspension training

Suspension training using a TRX or Jungle Gym XT trainer can help you gain excellent full-body balance and strength wherever you are. These easily transportable devices engage large and small muscle groups while you perform pushups, squats, lunges and other body-weight exercises.

Toned arms with the TRX>>

7

Water exercise

Practically anyone can take part in and benefit from water-based fitness activities such as water aerobics, water jogging and lap swimming. You'll love the weightless feeling of water exercise, and you'll be amazed at how your body can move when it isn't constrained by gravity. Try classes like aqua Zumba, Ai Chi and aquatic group cycling for a break from the usual water exercise routine.

8

Yoga

Yoga has been around for thousands of years, and its following continues to grow because of the fun challenge that it presents. Yoga instructor Maria Fratus says, "Yoga has amazing effects on the mind and body, and you can't ignore the fact that participants get into positions their bodies have not seen since the fifth grade: handstands, wheels, down dogs! Now that's fun!"

How to get the most out of your yoga classes >>

9

Outdoor cycling and alternatives

Indoor spinning classes can be fun, but nothing beats the thrill of a real ride. Pick up a bike and hit the roads and trails for a consistently fun challenge.

If you shy away from cycling because you can't stand the butt burn, check out a few of the new outdoor cycling alternatives such as the Trikke and the ElliptiGO. The Trikke engages your legs and core as you power the three-wheeled standing cycle around town, while the Elliptigo functions as an outdoor elliptical machine, allowing you to run on wheels!

10

Punk Rope

jump rope

Sure, you could grab a jump rope and get a great cardio workout by yourself, but nothing will get you huffing and puffing faster than the full-out Punk Rope fitness class. The great thing is you'll be having so much fun that you won't care how hard you're working. Find a class near you by scoping out the Punk Rope website.

Friday's Fashion Obsessions: Stacy Keibler and Jessica Alba

Stacy Keibler and Jessica Alba's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Stacy Keibler

Stacy Keibler

Wow. I don't usually pay much attention to Stacy Keibler, but I couldn't keep my eyes off her this week when she showed to up VH1's Divas concert rocking this oh-so-sexy ensemble. This, my friends, is how you do a revealing pantsuit. Stacy's cleavage-grazing navy blazer could have taken a disastrous turn had she chosen to pair it with a revealing bottom, but instead, she cinched it with a nip slip-saving belt and total coverage pants.

Speaking of those pants... aren't they fab? At first glance I thought they were just leather; however upon closer inspection, I realized that they are partial leather, partial navy and that they totally make a perfect set when combined with the blazer.

The final verdict? If you've got it, flaunt it — in a respectable way, of course! Stacy created a magical rocker moment on the red carpet here and it was only amplified with her simply glowing makeup and sexy beachy waves. Am I the only jealous gal here?

Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba

Pretty in pink, Miss Jessica! The actress dazzled in this pink Dior dress at the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards nominations last week. There are many reasons this look works, the first being the vibrant color. This shows all you naysayers that a gal can  wear hot pink in the cold months! Forget the drab black and navy looks, girls, there's no reason you can't light up a room in a bold hue this winter — just avoid any blatantly summery neon shades.

Another reason I'm loving the ensemble? The subtle peplum detail! This is a nice example of how to work a different shape of a peplum because as you'll see if you zoom on in, it's not a typical one. One last thought: Since she was rocking such a statement hue, Jess was wise to keep her shoes neutral and her hair beachy and breezy.

The final verdict? If I had Jess' disposable income, I would most definitely be heading to my nearest luxe department store to stock up on this adorable number!

Celeb Hairstyle of the Week: Jana Kramer

We have a total crush on Jana Kramer's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!
Jana Kramer

We're obsessed!

We have a total crush on Jana Kramer's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

Aww. That was my first reaction when I saw Jana Kramer's recent look at last week's American Country Awards! She just looks so pretty and elegant! Jana always looks amazing, but this 'do is a step above the rest, if you ask me. The curls are so delicately placed and frame her face perfectly. Her makeup is quite darling too!

I headed straight to the source to get the scoop on how to steal Jana's 'do and asked her stylist, Kelsey Deenihan, for a how-to. Here we go!

Get the hair look!

  1. I started out by blow drying Jana's hair with a large round brush to smooth out any flyaways.
  2. Next, in small sections, I used a 1-inch curling iron and wrapped sections around the barrel going away from the face, spraying each section with a light hairspray to hold the curl.
  3. I let the hair set while I did makeup, and about 45 minutes later, I took a flat boar bristle brush and brushed all the curls out giving it a ton of volume and an Old Hollywood look.

Last-minute gift picks

We’re here to help guide you to gift-giving success with our last-minute ideas for things he’s sure to love.

Gift card

gift cards for him

Gift cards might seem impersonal but they’re definitely the quickest gift solution. Go to a couple of his favorite stores and get him some gift cards so he can shop for what he wants most. Starbucks or iTunes cards can be equally useful.

Movie night package

Couples movie night

Pre-pack a movie night date by picking up some movie gift certificates, some popcorn, candies and anything else that screams “movie night” and packing it all up into an oversize popcorn box or bucket. You can also swap the movie tickets for a bunch of DVDs of his favorite flicks and have your movie date at home.

Nice bottle of wine

Gift of Wine

Is he a wine snob? Splash out on a couple of really nice bottles for your guy. Do some research on a site like Decanter to find out what’s been topping the best-of lists lately, or ask equally wine-obsessed friends or family for recommendations and surprise him with something he’ll be thrilled to uncork.

Gourmet treats

Gift tin of fudge

Whether you bake them or buy them, most men will appreciate a basket of yummy sweet or savory treats. No time to slave over a hot oven? Visit a gourmet grocery store or specialty food shop and pick out some unique items you know he’ll enjoy. Sauces, dips, spice rubs, candies and other fun stuff he doesn’t normally buy for himself makes for an ideal last-minute gift for your foodie guy.

Magazine subscription

Stack of magazines

What magazines does he pick up regularly? Choose one or two and order him a subscription. The first one won’t arrive before Christmas, but you can buy the latest copies of the ones you’ve ordered a subscription for and wrap those up for a quick but totally thoughtful last-minute holiday gift.

Friday's Fashion Fails: Krysten Ritter & Liv Tyler

$

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Krysten Ritter and Liv Tyler's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Krysten Ritter

Krysten Ritter

Happy 31st birthday, Krysten Ritter! The actress attended a dominatrix convention birthday party at The Bank nightclub in Vegas, and it looks like the birthday girl was inspired by Anne Hathaway's S&M style last week in this Hervé Léger by Max Azria dress. Hervé Léger made the bandage dress famous, but this is more like the bondage dress.

Don't get us wrong — leather dresses are very in style this season — but there's a right and wrong way to wear this edgy material. When in doubt, keep it chic and simple. Instead, this dress has patterns, piping, a belt, a harness and long sleeves to boot. Speaking of boots, Krysten finished her look with a pair of Rachel Zoe ankle booties.

We actually think this look could be salvaged if she lost the sleeves and choker harness neckline that simply screams, "Take me to the torture chamber!" But all of this together is just too much.

The final verdict? We're cracking our virtual whip at Krysten for this painful ensemble. When rocking a leather look, try this strapless and sexy version from Zara.

Liv Tyler

Liv Tyler

Let's start with the positives when it comes to Liv Tyler's look she chose for An Intimate Night of Jazz in NYC. We think the black silk dress she's wearing has potential. But why did the designer have to add an oversized vest to the gown?

Liv, who's currently the face of Givenchy, is a tall, statuesque girl, but you can't tell under all of the fabric she's drowning in. As we mentioned, the baggy vest isn't adding anything to her ensemble. And with the long train and hemline of this gown, we simply can't even see what shoes she's wearing.

The final verdict? If you're going to accessorize a dress with a vest, we'd suggest a fitted one with a pop of color. We also think a bright, tailored blazer would have looked great with this getup instead. This isn't our favorite look of Liv's, but her hair and makeup are pretty.

10 TV and movie couples we wish would get together like Mila and Ashton

$

We all have favorite on-screen couples, whether they’re on TV or in film. So when Ashton Kutcher hooked up with his That '70s Show co-star Mila Kunis, we started thinking about all the other fictional lovebirds we’d like to see reunite in real life.
1

Rachel McAdams
and Ryan Gosling

Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling

Allie and Noah from The Notebook will go down in history as one of the most beloved on-screen couples of all time. When McAdams and Gosling did hook up, the fans went nuts with excitement over the screen to real life romance. We know it didn’t last, but we still have a soft spot for this former couple.

2

Katie Holmes
and Joshua Jackson

Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson

Pacey and Joey remain one of those TV couples that make fans of Dawson’s Creek swoon when they think back about the show. We know Jackson is firmly rooted in a long-term relationship with Diane Kruger, but in an alternate universe, how amazing would it be for these two former on-screen loves to create some real life romance?

3

Claire Danes
and Jared Leto

Claire Danes and Jared Leto

My So-Called Life was undoubtedly one of the best shows on television about high school life and what it feels like to be a teenager. Claire Danes and Jared Leto as Angela Chase and Jordan Catalano made for a fascinating on screen pair, and though it’s not really feasible, seeing these two reprise their roles in real life would be pretty cool.

4

Keanu Reeves
and Sandra Bullock

Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock

Speed remains one of those movies we have to watch if it ever comes on television, and the main reason for that is the cute chemistry between Reeves and Bullock, who we always wished would find romance off-screen. As far as we know, they’re just friends, but we still think they’d make a great couple.

5

David Duchovny
and Gillian Anderson

David Duchovney and Gillian Anderson

We know we’re not alone in our desire to see Scully and Mulder from The X-Files get together in real life. Seeing these two become more than past co-stars is a veritable online obsession for legions of fans. Are they or aren’t they? Rumors continue to swirl about whether Duchovny and Anderson will ever be more than friends.

6

Colin Firth
and Renee Zellweger

Colin Firth and Renee Zellweger

Who can ever forget Bridget Jones and her bumbling hookup with straight-laced Marc Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary ? While Firth is married and we’re not sure what Zellweger’s romantic status is, those two were so hilarious in both films that we can’t resist wanting to see them together off-screen.

7

Kate Winslet
and Leonardo DiCaprio

Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio

Our hearts do go on for these two, the ultimate romantic pairing from mega-blockbuster Titanic. The minute Jack and Rose locked eyes on board the ill-fated ocean liner, we were smitten with their light-hearted chemistry and passionate love for one another. We’re still holding out hope that longtime friends DiCaprio and Winslet will one day make a real life go of their movie romance.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt
and Zooey Deschanel

Joseph Gordon Levitt and Zooey Deschanel

There were brief rumors a while back that 500 Days of Summer co-stars Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel were more than friends, but we’re pretty sure nothing ever came of that. However, we’d love to see these two quirky cuties , hook up in real life.

9

Adam Brody
and Rachel Bilson

Adam Brody and Rachel Bilson

If we could magically get Seth and Summer from the The O.C. together in real life, we would. Brody and Bilson made an ultra-cute couple on the show and dated in real life for three years. We even found a Tumblr dedicated to their on-screen romance!

10

Sophia Bush
and Chad Michael Murray

Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray

The real life couple from One Tree Hill couldn’t make it work off-screen . But that doesn’t mean we don’t want them to give it another try now that they’re both older and more mature. They were so cute on the show and we would hope they might be able to get back some of that on-screen spark in the real world.

The best beauty oils: More than argan oil

$
0
0
If you are a beauty product lover, by now you are familiar with argan oil and its benefits. The precious ingredient derived from the green nut of the argan tree is sold in hair care, skin care, body care and even cosmetic products. While its uses and benefits are well-documented, there are other oils that have similar or complementary beauty benefits. Read on to learn about oils you might not have heard of and even some that, although common, have amazing benefits.

Mango oil

Mango oil

You might think of the mango as a great fragrance but not truly a beauty ingredient. Mango oil contains high levels of antioxidants and beneficial vitamins A, C and E. Just one cup of mango contains 80 percent of your vitamin C for the day and 25 percent of vitamin A. Studies have shown that vitamins A and C have a direct influence on hair growth, making these vitamins a vital contributor to healthy hair. Mango oil also is excellent to add and retain hair's moisture. Try a product like Klorane's Mango Oil .

Tahitian Monoi oil

Tahitian Monoi oil

Monoi oil takes coconut oil to the next level. The Tahitians place a fragrant flower  into coconut oil for a process called enfleurage. The result is an oil you can use to strengthen your hair, moisturize your body, use as a bath oil or even as a perfume. To deep condition, fortify and add shine to your hair, try using it as a pre-shampoo treatment. Simply apply it to your dry hair, massage into your scalp and let sit for 10 minutes before shampooing hair. One to try is Moana Monoi Oil .

Marula oil

Marula oil

Marula oil from East Africa contains high levels of omega-3 and 9 fatty acids for amazing skin hydration. It also helps to trap moisture on the skin so your skin stays supple longer. This fast absorbing oil contains higher levels of antioxidants than argan or grape seed oil, making it a great choice for anti-aging skin care. Try Pure Marula Oil by The Leakey Collection .

Emu oil

Emu oil

Emu oil from Australia comes from an indigenous ostrich-like bird. This oil is rich in omega-3 and 6 essential fatty acids and omega-9 essential fatty acids . It is great for dry skin, eczema and psoriasis. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, it is widely used for sore muscles and massage. One to try is Thunder Ridge 100 percent Emu Oil .

Hazelnut oil

Hazelnut oil

Hazelnut oil is lightweight and great for sensitive skin. It has astringent properties that help to tighten the pores and limit oil output, which makes it a good choice for people with oily skin. Look for it in Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil .

Maracuja oil

Maracuja oil

Maracuja Oil comes from the Amazon and has been used for its beauty benefits for hundreds of years. It is extremely rich in vitamin C and essential fatty acids, making it a great choice to nourish the skin and revitalize damaged hair. This oil is sold pure or integrated into skin care and makeup. Try Tarte's Pure Maracuja Oil .

It's not glamorous, but it's enough for Molly to get by. And that's all she's doing — getting by, living one day at a time. Romance? Ha! That's the last thing on Molly's mind right now.

That is, until Molly meets the incredibly sexy pastry chef at the bakery. All of a sudden, Molly is juggling the thought of a budding romance with the demands of single motherhood and her brand-new job that she desperately needs. It's time for some festive flirting

How to do you feel about holiday romance? A recent survey revealed that the festive season is an ideal time to get a little flirty, and we wanted to delve a little further into these festively frisky results. Are you feeling flirty this Christmas?

Festive flirting survey

The survey, called Festive Flirting, was conducted in late November 2012 by Tagged, a social network for meeting new people. Tagged surveyed its users to find out how they felt about finding love this holiday.

1,400 adults participated nationally and revealed a few interesting opinions about flirting and finding romance during the holiday season. "In the past, singles often found the holidays a very lonely time of year. Now, as sites like Tagged make meeting new people easy, the potential for new friendships, fireside flirting, midnight kisses and other holiday fireworks finds singles from coast to coast more open than ever to connecting with someone new,” says Steve Sarner, VP of Marketing, Tagged.

And the survey says…

We took a look at the results and pulled out some of the most interesting stats below.

  • 60 percent of the respondents said that during the holiday season, they are more likely to flirt casually online, meet new people to have fun or find a relationship.
  • 85 percent said they would ask out a fellow online flirt for a holiday celebration.
  • 68 percent said they would/might hook up or have sex with someone they met online during a winter holiday.
  • Only three percent said they avoid online romance during the holiday season.

What you said

With those results in mind, we thought we might ask around to see if festive flirting is on everyone’s mind this holiday.

“I think the holidays are the perfect time to flirt and try and meet someone. Everyone’s out having a good time and going to parties, so it’s easier to make a connection.” Katherine, Orlando, Florida

“I’m actually normally pretty shy, but the holidays somehow make it OK to flirt, or ask someone out who I might not normally feel brave enough to talk to.” Ceri, Denver, Colorado

“I met my husband at a Christmas party six years ago, so I’m living proof that the holidays are a great time to find romance!” Madeline, San Diego, California

Brown butter brownie recipe

Recipe adapted from The Catalyst: Cupcakes Blog

Ingredients:

  • 1 stick + 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • 1-1/4 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teapoon espresso powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablspoons water
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup + 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup walnuts
  • 1/4 cup white chocolate chips

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Grease an 8 x 8-inch baking pan.
  2. In a small bowl combine sugar, cocoa powder, espresso powder and salt. Whisk to combine.
  3. In a small bowl whisk together eggs, water and vanilla.
  4. In a medium saucepan over medium heat melt butter. When it starts to foam, slowly stir for 2-4 minutes until you brown bits of butter forming in the bottom of the pan. Remove pan from heat.
  5. Add dry mixture to butter and stir until combined. It will look gritty. Let mixture cool for 5 minutes.
  6. After cooling, add in half of the egg mixture. Stir until well combined. Add the remaining egg mixture and stir until well combined.
  7. Add flour and stir vigorously for 20 strokes, scraping down the sides of the bowl. Stir for another 20 strokes. The mixture should be glossy and smooth.
  8. Lightly fold in the nuts and white chocolate chips. Pour mixture into prepared pan.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick inserted into center comes out nearly clean. Brownies will be fudgy.
  10. Cool completely before cutting, about 2-3 hours.

The Jade Hotel

The Jade Hotel

Opening in New York City's Greenwich Village in January, The Jade Hotel takes inspiration from an era of speakeasies and literary salons. In the sunken lobby, an alcove of New York-themed books is complemented by a rotating selection of local artwork. It's a similar story in the hotel's Grapevine Restaurant, which will source ingredients from nearby Hudson Valley for its Mediterranean menu and be a laid-back spot for specialty cocktails, imported beer and wine. The 113 hotel rooms are French art deco and the Greenwich Penthouse comes with a few hard-to-find New York City amenities like a walkout balcony and soaking tub with separate shower. But, of course, it's all about location. You're within walking distance of Washington Square Park and other neighborhood hot spots.

The Alexander

The Alexander

From guestroom wallpaper to meeting room names, everything at The Alexander is tied to its hometown of Indianapolis. Set to open in mid-January, the 209-room hotel will feature an art collection curated by the Indianapolis Museum of Art with an all-new work from Madame Walker, a local legend and the first self-made African-American female millionaire. Its signature restaurant, Cerulean, is already open to the public and is the second location for Chef Caleb France. At the tri-level bar, Plat 99, mixologists use fresh, local ingredients and snacks include artisanal charcuterie and regional cheeses. The Alexander Hotel is part of City Way, downtown Indianapolis' new mixed-use development that neighbors the Cultural Trail, which you can explore using one of the hotel's free bike rentals.

Capella Washington D.C., Georgetown

Capella Washington D.C., Georgetown

Capella Washington D.C., Georgetown comes to you from one of the co-founders of Ritz-Carlton, so it's not surprising that service is a focal point. Guests have access to their own personal assistant and check-in and checkout times are flexible. The urban hotel is opening in pedestrian-friendly Georgetown in February near the Kennedy Center, Rock Creek Park, and Georgetown and George Washington Universities. Design emphasizes charming details — the Living Room's antique parquet floor is reclaimed from a European castle, and the hotel is filled with specially commissioned artwork. On the rooftop, you'll find a laid-back lounge as well as a relaxation pool with rainfall showers. And the main restaurant, tucked along Georgetown's historic C&O Canal park, specializes in quality meats, fresh seafood and tableside prep.

LEGOLAND Hotel

LEGOLAND Hotel

This one is for the families ! Opening in April, LEGOLAND Hotel in Carlsbad, California, is a child's dream come true with 250 rooms decked out as "pirate,""kingdom" or "adventure" to match the theme park. A stay at LEGOLAND Hotel means exclusive early admission to the park itself, but there's plenty at the hotel to spark your little one's imagination, too. Rooms feature brightly colored LEGO decor and are set up for a treasure hunt with a LEGO prize. It's truly a kid's kingdom — from secret whoopee cushions and tightrope walking guards to quirky elevators, exploding toy boxes and even dragons! In the atrium, a giant burping ogre protects the knight's castle and a 32-foot-high pirate shipwreck sounds the canons at the raise of a flag.

Discover real strategies that help work-at-home moms walk the tightrope between home life and work time. In 2013, increase your productivity and decrease your stress as you hone your stay-at-home career.

Balance your home life and your work at home

Working from home has its benefits, but it’s still work. In order to gain flexibility and freedom, moms who work at home have to sacrifice free time and learn to juggle the responsibilities of parenthood and career-oriented tasks. Use these alpha-mom strategies to streamline your New Year working at home.

Get dressed for work every day

As tempting as it is to work in pajamas or sweatpants, try to get dressed for work every day. You don’t need to dress up, but you should try to look as put-together as you would going to the store or even meeting with a client. Brush your teeth, do your hair and put on makeup if you’re a woman who wears makeup. These rituals will help you get into a work mindset. When you sit down for work, you’ll feel energized and focused and less likely to waste time idly browsing on the computer or fiddling with housework. Cut yourself some slack when needed, but try to stick to this habit as regularly as possible.

Try these 4 stress-less tips for working moms>>

Use child care whenever you can

When it comes to working while your children are at home, set reasonable expectations. Even the most well-behaved, hands-off children will need your attention often enough to distract you from work. Structure your work time around school hours or times when your partner can watch your children. If you do need to work with the kids in your care, be gentle with yourself and with your children. Plan for noises, delays and kids who require your attention. Try not to communicate to the kids that work is more important than they are. This is a tough line to walk, and one that takes practice. It gets easier the older your children get.

Never take calls or send email when you’re distracted

Working from home can be distracting. From kids to pets to unexpected visitors, you never know what might pull your attention away from your work. If you use the phone for work, be very conscious of your own state of mind and the background noises that may occur. Don’t attend virtual meetings or take calls if your kids are in the other room. Kids have an uncanny ability to get loud and upset when you need them to be quiet. Don’t send emails when you’re frazzled or distracted. Be aware of your stress levels and how focused you are. You should always be in “work mode” when sending work emails.

Schedule work hours as strictly as possible

Sometimes working from home feels like working 24/7. If you carry a smartphone around, you may get emails from clients and work associates all the time. Avoid the bad habit of reading and answering work emails from bed, the grocery store or the car. Regardless of the kind of work you do, you should set realistic hours as if you’re a place of business. If you start answering emails late at night, you’ll set unrealistic expectations and you’ll make yourself crazy. Your hours don’t need to be 9 to 5, but they should be somewhat consistent. It’s OK to work very early before the kids go to school and very late after they go to bed as long as you’ve consciously decided that these are the best work times for your health and productivity.

Mane Event Mondays: How to protect your hair from heat

$

We're partnering with some of the hair industry's top talents to bring you answers to your hair questions. Up today? Master stylist Nick Arrojo is showing us how to protect our vulnerable strands against heat damage.

Woman with flat iron

Your question

Can you create a guide for protecting your hair from heat? Is it OK to use heat tools every day? How can you lessen the damage? How bad is blow drying?

Nick's answer!

Blow dryers, curling and straightening tools are a great addition to your styling arsenal because they allow you to shape and style your hair quickly and easily — an effective modern solution for our time-short lives. The price you pay, however, is the heat-induced damage to your hair. Sure, you’ll look great today and tomorrow, but constant use, especially of hot-tools, does damage the hair shaft, unless you take the proper precautions. And if hair is damaged, it gets increasingly harder to style effectively from day to day, which is when dealing with your locks gets frustrating.

If that happens, it’s really tough to get your hair looking good, no matter what cut you have, or product or tool you are using. So let’s look at some tips and tricks to using heat, without beating down on tresses.

A thermal protector

This is a must-have if you use heat tools regularly. They come in various guises and are designed to absorb and deflect heat, creating a protective barrier for locks. Most come in spray form and you should generously mist it into damp hair anytime you are using heat tools. Look for a thermal protector with added styling benefits. ARROJO protective thickening lotion, for example, features UV protection for hair, light hold and it helps to thicken and plump the hair shaft, which makes it a great all around prep product.

Handle your hair

For both curling and straightening irons, take thicker sections of hair into the iron all at once. Doing this means heat is being applied directly to fewer individual hair strands, reducing the amount of heat stress in the process. Take finer sections and you’ll encounter more heat and more stress.

Keep on moving

Another great way to diffuse that stress-inducing heat: Keep your heat tools moving as much as possible, no more than 15 or 20 seconds before moving on to the next section. It's better to repeat than to hold on too long.

Watch the settings

Buy irons that have a thermometer gauge and keep your heat tool on the lowest setting possible. Yes, a super-hot iron will make your hair straight and smooth right away, but do it a lot and you will soon encounter dried out, frazzled hair that will never go smooth and straight again until you’ve cut off the damage.

Color cues

Remember, if you use heat tools often, the damage can make it more difficult to achieve a successful color service. That’s because the cuticle can become dry and damaged and won’t open up as much when you or your colorist applies the color. This means the color fails to lock in to the hair shaft as well, reducing the short and long-term effect of color. If you do use a lot of heat tools and you’re going in for a color service, be sure to let your stylist know so they can account for it in the color process.

Choose your battles

As a general rule, avoid subjecting your hair to excessive heat whenever possible. Remember, a well-executed straight blowout will last you three days. And it's likely to look even better on the second or third day because your hair will be less susceptible to frizz and flyaways. So there’s no need to blow dry every day. If you’re curling your hair, remember rollers are a superb way to introduce brilliant, bouncy curls without the heat of a curling iron.

Repair and rebuild

If hair does get heat-stressed, it can be cured with the right care. A deep conditioning treatment restores life and luster, bounce and brilliance. To do it at home, use ARROJO hair repair masque. Packed with keratin, it offers intensive replenishment, perfect to restore radiance and make styling easy. The trick for the deep treatment is to leave it in hair for at least 10 minutes — run yourself a deep bath, put the masque on, lie back and enjoy!

Autism and the special, special education

The burials began Monday, Dec. 17, just three days after evil rained down upon Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Connecticut. On Saturday, Dec. 22, just two days before many of the massacred would have, should have, celebrated Christmas Eve with their families, the last of all 26 innocent victims were laid to rest in peace — their souls bound up in the bonds of eternal life.

Sandy Hook Funeral Home, Newtown, Connecticut

Twenty-six souls — 20 of them forever 6 and 7 years old — lost amidst a haze of gunfire, gunpowder and violence. Within minutes, they were gone. Within hours of hearing that their loved ones had perished, families, still in the throes of denial and anger, began to compose stories of their loved ones. These were based upon the Pulitzer Prize–winning New York Times"Portraits of Grief" section, which was created in response to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The profiles were "stories, anecdotes, tiny but telling details that seemed to reveal something true and essential about how each person lived.... The profiles... were closer to snapshots — concise, impressionistic, their power at least as much emotional as intellectual. And, they were utterly democratic." And yet, "each profile is only a snapshot, a single still frame lifted from the unrecountable complexity of a lived life."*

Like an onion, layer by layer the stories and faces of the Sandy Hook School victims came into focus. And, like an onion, each individual story brought tears to our collective eyes as we learned about each person unfairly robbed of the chance to reach his or her full potential and each family robbed of helping make those dreams a reality. We learned about the child who wanted to be a firefighter... the teacher who hid students in the closet... the boy who idolized the New York Giants... the teacher who idolized the Miami Dolphins... the girl whose mother finally allowed her to wear her favorite dress to school that fateful day... the boy who enjoyed playing baseball with his dad... the extraordinarily smart and cute boy gunned down, while his twin sister survived... the first-grade boy with special needs found cradled in the arms of his special education aide, who also died as she tried to shield him from harm.

Dylan Hockley and Anne Marie Murphy

Sandy Hook Memorial, Newtown, Connecticut

The. First. Grade. Boy. With. Special. Needs. Found. Cradled. In. The. Arms. Of. His. Special. Education. Aide. Dylan Christopher Jack Hockley, age 6, and his special education aide Anne Marie Murphy, age 52, entered into eternity together. Like Dylan, whose family lives 20 minutes from my own, my son is a first grader with autism spectrum disorder. Like Dylan, my son is in a typical classroom and has a one-on-one aide by his side. And my heart and soul believe that Ethan's educators and paraprofessionals, as did Dylan's, would sacrifice their lives to protect his. There but for the grace of G-d go I...

Just as Anne Marie had loved and protected Dylan during his short life, she loved and protected him during what was, hopefully, a death without suffering.

"We take great comfort in knowing that Dylan was not alone when he died," his parents, Ian and Nicole Hockley, said.

They went on to say that "Dylan loved Mrs. Murphy so much and pointed at her picture on our refrigerator every day.... Though our hearts break for Dylan, they are also filled with love for these and the other beautiful women who all selflessly died trying to save our children.... We cannot speak highly enough of Dawn Hochsprung and Mary Sherlach , exceptional women who knew both our children and who specifically helped us navigate Dylan's special education needs.... Dylan's teacher, Vicki Soto , was warm and funny, and Dylan loved her dearly."

At Dylan's funeral, his mother told a story about asking Dylan why he sometimes flapped his arms, as some children with autism do. Given Dylan's limited language, she expected no answer. But Dylan surprised everyone when he said, "Because I am a beautiful butterfly."

Catching up

Outside, after Dylan's service, the mourners watched as Jake, Dylan's brother, released 26 symbolic balloons — 20 purple for the children, six white for the adults. After a beat, another purple balloon was released, which drifted up to the others, in a proverbial game of catch up. You see, when you have a child with autism, you learn that your child's life will be one long symbolic pursuit of catching up.

A woman of valor

At Anne Marie Murphy’s funeral Mass, led by Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York said, "Annie's life and death bring light, truth, goodness and love to a world often shrouded in darkness, evil, selfishness and death."

Her Mass began with a reading from the Book of Proverbs : "She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.... Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.... Honor her for all that her hands have done and let her works bring her praise."

Even in death, Anne Marie will protect children with autism; her family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Autism Speaks.

"Annie's life and death bring light, truth, goodness and love to a world often shrouded in darkness, evil, selfishness and death"

Divine intervention

While the Hockley, Murphy and 24 other families mourn their loved ones, here I sit in my own home, blessed to faintly hear my son playing the piano in another room. I am moved and awed to hear him play Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven," a song he's never played before. Perhaps Divine Intervention, or Anne Marie's and Dylan's spirits, are responsible. There is no logical way to explain how my son, out of the blue, plays a new song whose apropos lyrics talk about "a lady we all know, who shines white light and wants to show, how everything still turns to gold."

Surely, Anne Marie is the lady who shines light and goodness, as she continues to assure Dylan that everything will be all right. Except this time, Dylan no longer needs to be cradled in the safety of Anne Marie's loving arms. Now, Dylan truly is that beautiful butterfly he always wanted to be. And this time, when he flaps his wings, he can ascend the stairway to Heaven all by himself. He is, after all, a butterfly. And butterflies are free.

Postscript

Throughout the year, especially during the holiday season and in the wake of the Newtown tragedy, my husband and I would like to recognize and thank the Anne Marie Murphys in our world, our very own "Women of Valor." Their love and light protects Ethan every way, every day.

Eddie Redmayne on taking on the coveted role of Marius in Les Miserables

Eddie Redmayne received film acclaim last year co-starring alongside Michelle Williams in My Week With Marilyn. Now he reveals to SheKnows what it was like to fall in love at first sight with Amanda Seyfried's Cosette and be carried through the mud on the back of Hugh Jackman.

Eddie Redmayne

Eddie Redmayne may be new to film musicals and you may not have known he was a singer, but he is definitely not new to the stage or to the big screen. Starring in various productions in London, Eddie got his biggest recognition last year when he starred opposite Academy Award nominee Michelle Williams in My Week With Marilyn.

Now just a year later, he is sharing the big screen with more powerhouse actors like Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried in Les Miserables.

SheKnows sat down with the talented Brit to find out what it was like to bring the famed role of Marius to the big screen, what role in the story he always wanted and what it was really like to be carried on the back of Hugh's Jean Valjean.

SheKnows: Were you a fan of the musical before this film?

Eddie Redmayne: I saw it when I was seven. I wanted to be Gavroche when I was a kid, the idea of being a part of it was beyond imagination. So when we saw the film for the first time and I saw it with Samantha [Barks, Eponine] and Amanda [Seyfried, Cosette], we are as big fans as anyone.

Anne Hathaway & Hugh Jackman transform for Les Mis>>

SK: Did you ever think you would play Marius?

ER: Tom [Hooper, the director] wanted a young 17-year-old, so I started auditioning for Enjolras and did a bit of Marius. I never thought I would get Marius. Then I had to put my actor hat on and find how I am going to play this. On stage, the problem with Marius is that all these people are dying for him. He is just wandering through it, you just need something to grab onto. So we put more moments in the film to make him more complicated. He is not just a hero, he is a damaged human being.

SK: What did you think when all the big names were cast?

ER: Exciting. When I was auditioning for it, I knew that Hugh was doing it and I knew Annie [Fantine] was doing it. I was cast early on and then I auditioned Samantha and Amanda for chemistry tests. Of course, it was an intimidating group. When we arrived on day one, we had all been through this hard-core auditioning process. None of us knew what we were doing. We knew what the process was going to be of singing live, but what was the best way at making that work was new to all of us. Everyone was so supportive of each other, and I would go up to Hugh and Russell [Javert] and ask for advice and we would find ways to help each other.

SK: The whole cast seems like they got so close while making the movie?

ER: A lot of films, people come for a week here or there, and the director has to adhere to how an actor works because they are only there for a little bit. It was more like in theater, you have a big rehearsal process, so it’s more ensemble-based. We had nine weeks on this and also this idea of all of us helping with each other. It was great.

SK: After My Week With Marilyn, you got Les Miserables, two great movies for you. Are you shocked to have such great films on top of each other?

ER: I feel very lucky. There are some films that you think are wonderful, but don’t hit an audience or don’t find a place in the world. Les Miserables has something that appeals to you and your mom and me as a 7-year-old. It deals with this idea of redemption and starting to change the world by loving the person next to you. It deals with the emotion of humanity and watching it with an audience, there is that cathartic thing that comes with seeing it with people. If we just take it one day at a time, we can do something.

Les Miserables film releases extended first look>>

SK: Do you think there is a strong message for women with this story with all the struggles with Fantine and Eponine?

ER: I never thought about whether it is stronger for women or men. I think it deals with motherhood, fatherhood. It certainly does have a strong female message. I certainly learned a lot with Marius’ character.

SK: Do you believe in love at first sight like with Marius and Cosette?

ER: I believe in the notion of love. That is what excited about doing this on film. In the book, he sees her and he pursues her for seven months. I never believed in love at first sight with Romeo and Juliet on stage until I saw the film where they look at each other through a fish tank. So I got excited that it could work better on film. It is a strong conceit, his world changes in a look.

SK: It was such a big cast, unlike with Marilyn. Was it more difficult to work on?

ER: It came with a load of challenges and a lot of those were technical and emotional. The stakes are so high. I thought with Marilyn, it was so different, because Michelle was playing someone so different from herself. I went to Eaton, I was playing this young English guy. I find the more close it is to yourself, the more difficult it is. I found Marilyn really challenging. Compared to what she and Kenneth [Branagh] were doing, I didn’t have a leg to stand on. This one as far as muscle-acting wise, I think it was the most challenging.

SK: Hugh carries you through a dirty sewer in the film. What was that gross stuff and was he really carrying you?

ER: It was horrid. You have a wetsuit on under your costume. It’s freezing cold water with clay and mud in it. It was rank. It got to a point after 15 hours of shooting, where you get so cold. There was a bit where I am lying dead and Sacha [Baron Cohen, Thernardier] comes and steals my ring and we’ve been in there for eight hours, and Tom was like, "Eddie, you have to stop shaking." I’m like, "I can’t control my body." That being said, I just had to lie there dead, Hugh had to carry me. Anything I can complain about, it feels like nothing compared to what Hugh had to do.

SK: So I bet you bonded after that scene?

ER: Yes, that was our last scene, the last scene we shot. I think Hugh’s great. My girlfriend was like, "You got carried by Hugh Jackman!" He was wonderful to work with.

Les Miserables hits theaters on Christmas Day. What are you most looking forward to about the movie?

A child with Asperger’s, often fondly referred to as an Aspie, focuses on a narrow set of behaviors and interests. Oftentimes a child with Asperger’s struggles to carry on meaningful conversations about topics outside of those interests. This can come across as a lack of empathy and a lack of interest in others. Let your child know that her classmate with Asperger’s syndrome isn’t being rude or mean on purpose.

Aspies are just like other kids

While a child with Asperger’s syndrome isn’t exactly the same as a neurotypical child, she’s still just a kid. She has hopes and dreams and a sense of humor and a genuine desire to make friends. She loves her family and her toys and may not have any concept of her neurological differences. While children with Asperger’s may be socially awkward, with atypical speech patterns and high intelligence, they’re just as eager as other kids to fit in. Let your child know that it’s OK to be confused or frustrated by his classmate, but that he should never bully, tease or call attention to different behaviors.

It’s OK to ask questions

If your child goes to school with a classmate who has Asperger’s syndrome, don’t hesitate to ask questions. It’s best to approach the other parent instead of the teacher, who isn’t allowed to share private information about another student. Find out how you can encourage a friendship between your children. Ask what you can do to make the other child more comfortable in your home or on a play date. Find out what your child’s friend is interested in and see if those interests coincide with your child’s. Sometimes common interests can be the best jumping off point for a friendship.

Parents want you to be aware of misconceptions

In the aftermath of the tragedy at Sandy Hook School, parents of children with autism and Asperger’s syndrome were dismayed to see Asperger’s being mentioned in relation to the perpetrator. MyAutismTeam.com surveyed over 2,000 members and found that parents were concerned with misconceptions and a greater potential for bullying and judgment toward children with autism. Seventy-nine percent of responders indicated that it’s important for others to know that autism is not a mental illness but a neuro-developmental disorder. Parents also wanted others to know that autism is not linked to violence, and that children with autism are more likely to be victims of violent behavior.
