Daniel Craig shuts down reporter in embarrassing TV interview (WATCH)

More: Adele posts open letter to say 'I'm sorry' to her fans

Today’s This Morning aired a pre-recorded interview between Daniel Craig and the show’s showbiz reporter Sarah Powell, and it’s the kind of thing you can’t quite turn away from, but have to watch through your fingers.

Viewers were unimpressed to watch Powell repeatedly ask Craig to do the "James Bond pout" for her. Yes, that’s right. Of all the amazing things you could ask James Bond himself, she wanted him to pout.

Unsurprisingly, the 47-year-old actor was less than impressed himself. Initially, he politely declined to indulge in any pouting, but Powell wouldn’t let it go, and eventually he had to shut her down with a very firm: "I think you need to move on."

Unfortunately, it didn't get any better. Another cringeworthy moment saw Powell ask Craig why he didn't "strip off" in Spectre as much as he has done in his previous three Bond films.

"There's no swimwear, there's no tearing of the shirt off. What happened, why haven't you got your kit off?" she demanded.

The reporter then asked if "Bond has gone shy?" to which Craig replied, "He’s going shy now."

To add insult to injury, Powell also tried to give Craig a "gift" of a giant car sticker with his wife Rachel Weisz's name on it, before the interview abruptly ended and it was back to the This Morning studio.

Woman claims she can identify Parkinson's disease by smell only

More: IVF breakthrough gives women with fertility issues new hope

Joy Milne’s husband Les died at 65 earlier this year, following 20 years of living with the disease.

"I've always had a keen sense of smell and I detected very early on that there was a very subtle change in how Les smelled,” Mrs. Milne, 65, told STV News. “It's hard to describe but it was a heavy, slightly musky aroma. I had no idea that this was unusual and hadn't been recognised before.

"I watched with interest how research had uncovered distinctive smells associated with certain diagnoses and when I was attending a Parkinson's UK research lecture at the University of Edinburgh a few years ago I mentioned it to the researcher, Dr. Tilo Kunath,” she continued. "Tilo was interested and together we worked out ways to see if I could detect it from other people with Parkinson's and not just Les. It turned out I could."

More: 10-Second test helps you determine your skin cancer risk

Researchers believe that Parkinson’s may result in a change in the sebum, an oily substance in the skin, that leads to a particular smell.

A new study, funded by Parkinson’s UK, will take skin swabs from around 200 people in Manchester, Edinburgh and London, both with and without Parkinson’s. The researchers hope to be able to find a molecular signature responsible for the odour in people with Parkinson’s and use this to create a diagnostic test, which could be as simple as wiping someone's forehead with a swab.

To back up the testing process people with exceptional smelling abilities, like Mrs. Milne (known as “human detectors”) will also be involved.

Amazingly Mrs. Milne was able to identify people who had Parkinson’s simply by sniffing the T-shirts they had slept in. The first time she was tested at Edinburgh University, she correctly identified that seven people had Parkinson's (including one control subject who wasn't diagnosed for another eight months) and five other people didn't.

Professor Perdita Barran, leading the research at the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology, said: "It is hoped that these results could lead to the development of a non-invasive diagnostic test that may have the ability to diagnose early Parkinson's — possibly even before physical symptoms occur."

One in 500 people in the U.K. has Parkinson's for which there is no definitive diagnosis and no cure. For more information about Parkinson's visit Parkinson's UK.

Red velvet brain cake is the stuff delicious nightmares are made of

$

Specifically, we're talking the red velvet-y, raspberry jam-y, fondant-y creation of Yolanda Gampp. This brain cake is a moist, (literally) gutsy work of art that is totally perfect for your office Halloween party, Walking Dead viewing party or just on any night you feel like you might want to take a big scoop of gooey brains and shove it in your mouth, much to the horror and/or delight of whoever happens to be in the room with you at the time.

More: Spiderweb double-decker cheesecake makes a cutesy Halloween dessert

Gampp is the brain (pun totally intended) and talent behind the hugely popular How To Cake It YouTube channel, where she makes all kinds of real-life object cakes that will make you drool and wonder "how the heck does she do that?" at the same time. She was also a hit on Food Network TV's SugarStars and, oh yeah, she's completely self-taught.

So what do you need to make a hyper-realistic, completely delicious, deep red velvet brain cake?

You start with a red velvet cake that's been carved into the hippocampus and whatnot and coated in simple syrup, because of course no one likes dry, crumbly brains.

brain-cake-step-1
Image: How To Cake It/YouTube

Of course, a brain cake isn't a brain cake without some wrinkly matter that makes up the knowledge base, right? Gampp used ropes of fondant and "twizzled" them onto her brain cake, and yes, "twizzle" is an actual, totally real word used by people who make awesome brain cakes.

Of course, you can't even call what you've made a "brain cake" if it doesn't give you that delightfully squelchy feeling when you bite into a big, gooey hunk of it — or if it doesn't look sufficiently freshly harvested. That's why you need to make sure it's positively inundated with seedless raspberry jam. Make sure you pay particular attention to all the folds and squiggles of your brainy creation.

Paul Ryan slammed for family leave comments, but where does he stand?

More: No, my husband doesn't 'babysit'

See, Ryan is a father of three, and if he gets the votes to head up Congress, he made one huge demand of his party during a statement to the GOP Conference:

"I cannot and will not give up my family time. I may not be able to be on the road as much as previous speakers, but I pledged to make up for it with more time communicating our vision, our message."

Aww! A dad who really cares about his kids and believes in pulling his own weight. Whatta guy, right?

Well, maybe not. The Internet has exploded with memes knocking Ryan for being pro-family only when it serves himself, but being anti-family when it comes to legislation for America's masses.

More: Here's what feminists really wish Hillary Clinton would stand up and say

But is it true? Is Ryan really anti-family time?

Well, take a look at the Republican's record:

1. On June 4, 2009, Ryan voted against giving four weeks of paid parental leave to federal employees for the birth of a child or placement of a child with the employee for either adoption or foster care.

2. A list of Congress members who provide paid maternity or paternity leave to their staffers does not include Ryan.

3. As chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, Ryan delayed action on H.R. 1439, the Family and Medical Insurance Leave Act, earlier this year.

The Last Witch Hunter: 7 Fairy tales and movies that inspired the film

1. The Witch Queen's connection to Snow White

The Last Witch Hunter
Image: Lionsgate

Our hero in The Last Witch Hunter is Kaulder (Vin Diesel), who was cursed with immortality by the Witch Queen (Julie Engelbrecht). Though Kaulder thought he had defeated the Witch Queen, his deadly enemy Belial (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) actually stole the Witch Queen's beating heart to bring her back to life.

This is similar to the tale of Snow White, when the Huntsman is tasked with killing Snow White and bringing her heart to the queen. The Huntsman can't murder the beautiful young maiden and instead brings the queen a deer's heart. It seems a live, pumping heart represents the life force of a powerful creature all throughout fiction.

2. Michael Caine channels Alfred from The Dark Knight

The Last Witch Hunter
Image: Lionsgate

Best known to American audiences as Alfred in The Dark Knight films, British actor Michael Caine plays Dolan the 36th, a priest and protector of Kaulder. Caine himself best summed up the similarities by saying, "I'm rather like the elder statesman. He's much like Alfred, the butler in Batman. He and Kaulder have an extraordinary relationship, more like father and son."

3. Chloe as the Caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland

The Last Witch Hunter
Image: Lionsgate

Chloe (Rose Leslie) is a modern-day witch who operates a "Memory Bar," a place where people go not to forget their troubles, but to remember good times. At the bar, Chloe smokes a hookah pipe, just like the Caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland, perhaps suggesting that Chloe, like the Caterpillar, also has an impending transformation.

4. Dream walker inspired by the movie Inception

Chloe has a secret — she is a "dream walker" with the ability to enter other people's dreams. In this film, there is an important piece of information regarding the Witch Queen that Kaulder needs to retrieve from his unconscious, and Chloe offers to help him. This is similar to the characters in Inception, who enter other people's dreams to gather or plant information.

5. The gummy bear tree is a modern gingerbread house

Just like the gingerbread house that entices Hansel and Gretel, the tree created by Ellic (Joe Gilgun) boasts colorful gummy bears to attract children.

6. The witch's tree

The Last Witch Hunter
Image: Lionsgate

In The Last Witch Hunter, a thorny, knotted witch's tree serves as the Witch Queen's nest. It is no doubt inspired by the classic English fairy tale, The Old Witch, where a magical apple tree helped save a young peasant girl.

More: Crimson Peak isn't just about screams, it's about sexual freedom

7. The terrifying artwork of Zdzislaw Beksinski

This film has some truly twisted images, and the filmmakers were inspired by the paintings of the late Polish artist, Beksinski. The creepy art design of the witch's lair borrows from Beksinski's dystopian surrealistic art, giving the film a unique but truly sinister vibe.

The Last Witch Hunter opens today.

6 Body weight exercises you can do with a partner

$
0
0

The great thing about this body weight partner workout is that it requires absolutely no equipment — it can be done any time, anywhere, and is guaranteed to deliver a healthy dose of laughter while you work. Complete the full workout three times through for a heart-pumping, muscle-building circuit.

1.Squat and push-up

Squat and pushup
Image: Laura Williams/SheKnows

  • Assume a full push-up position on the ground, your arms extended and core tight. Your partner should stand behind you, legs slightly wider than hip-distance apart. Your partner bends down and grasps your ankles, lifting your feet off the ground as she returns to standing, holding your feet together at hip height.
  • As your partner continues holding your feet, she starts doing a squat by pressing her hips back, her weight in her heels, as she lowers her butt toward the ground. When her knees form a 90-degree angle, she presses back to standing. You remain in a push-up position throughout this portion of the exercise — your core engaged and your arms extended.
  • Once your partner is standing, perform a push-up by bending your elbows and lowering your chest toward the ground. Return to the full push-up position.

Continue performing the exercise for one minute, then switch roles and repeat.

2. Assisted pistol squat

Assisted pistol squat
Image: Laura Williams/SheKnows

  • Both partners stand facing each other, a few feet apart.
  • Reaching cross-body, grasp your partner's right forearm with your right hand. Shift your weight to your right foot and extend your left foot. Your partner should do the same.
  • Using each other as support, you both begin performing a one-legged pistol squat. Keep your left leg extended in front of you and press your hips back, bending your right knee as you lower yourself toward the ground while keeping your chest lifted.
  • When both of you reach a "sticking" point, reverse the movement and press back to start.

Continue performing the exercise for 30 seconds before switching sides.

More: 3 Best buddy workouts

3. Resistance push-up

Resistance pushup
Image: Laura Williams/SheKnows

  • Start in a full push-up position on the ground, your arms extended, your palms planted beneath your shoulders. Your partner should stand to the side of you before placing her palms lightly on your upper back.
  • Bend your elbows and lower yourself toward the ground. When your elbows form a 90-degree angle, begin reversing the movement to press back to start.
  • As you start pressing yourself back up again, your partner presses lightly down on your upper back, adding resistance to the push-up. The goal isn't to keep you from pressing back up, but to make the exercise harder.

Perform eight repetitions, then switch.

Note: This can be done from a modified push-up position — on the knees — as well.

4. Plank and bridge

Plank and bridge
Image: Laura Williams/SheKnows

  • Your partner should assume a full plank position, palms planted beneath her shoulders, core tight and her body forming a straight line from head to heels.
  • Lie on your back, perpendicular to your partner and lift your legs, placing them fully extended so your calves are across your partner's back.
  • Your partner maintains her full plank position as you engage your core, glutes and hamstrings to lift your hips off the ground until your body forms a straight line from heels to shoulders.
  • Lower your hips back toward the ground and continue lifting and lowering.

Continue the exercise for 60 seconds before switching positions.

Note: If 60 seconds straight is too difficult, perform each exercise for 30 seconds, switch positions, then perform both exercises a second time through.

5. Wall squat and dip

Wall squat and dip
Image: Laura Williams/SheKnows

  • Lean against a wall, your back flat, your feet positioned about a foot in front of the wall, hip-distance apart. Bend your knees and slide your back down the wall, engaging your glutes, quads, hamstrings and core until your knees form a 90-degree angle. Hold this position.
  • Your partner should stand in front of you, facing away from you, before she squats down so her hips are just in front of your knees.
  • From here, your partner places her hands on your thighs, just above your knees, using them for support. She steps her feet out in front of her so her legs are fully extended, heels on the ground.
  • As you hold the wall squat, your partner bends her elbows and lowers her hips toward the ground. When her elbows form a 90-degree angle, she presses herself back to start by extending her elbows.

Continue for 60 seconds before switching positions.

Note: If you or your partner finds the dips too challenging with your legs fully extended, you can perform a modified version with your knees bent and feet flat on the ground. The exercise is otherwise performed as described.

6. Power leg lift

Power leg lift
Image: Laura Williams/SheKnows

  • Lie on your back on the ground with your legs fully extended.
  • Have your partner stand just behind your shoulders so you can grip her ankles.
  • Lift your legs straight up into the air, pressing your low back into the ground and engaging your core.
  • Keeping her core tight, your partner bends forward (almost as if doing a deadlift) and pushes your legs away from her, "throwing" them toward the ground as she returns to standing.
  • As your partner "throws" your legs down, engage your core and resist the throw, allowing your legs to lower toward the ground, but remaining in control of the movement so your heels never touch down.
  • Let your feet "hang" above the ground for a moment before you engage your core and lift your legs back into the air again.

Perform 15 repetitions before switch positions.

Note: Communicate with your partner about how hard she should press your feet away from you. If you're having a hard time maintaining control, ask her to ease up. If you're doing the exercise without a problem, ask her to push harder.

How to plump your lips without lip filler

$
0
0

Long before the #KylieJennerChallenge, pretty, pouty, puffy lips have been in vogue. Full lips showcase gorgeous lip color, but they're also a sign of health and fertility — one men apparently lust after just as much as women. In this day and age of quick lunchtime surgical procedures, all women (well, all women who possess a generous beauty budget) can walk into a doctor's office and, thanks to a variety of lip fillers, walk out with Kylie Jenner-like lips.

But just because they can do it, doesn't mean all women want to plump their lips with collagen or hyaluronic acid. Some crave the good old days when you could weave a few magical makeup tricks and then erase all evidence of your temporary painted face with a bit of soap and water. Grab your favorite lip liner and photo of Angelina Jolie (for inspiration) and prepare to create the pillowy lips of your dreams.

1. Exfoliate lips

Use either a sugar scrub, washcloth or a toothbrush. If lips are very dry, apply a good balm for five minutes and then remove.

2. Apply either a concealer, lip plumper or primer

Try Benefit's Lip Plump (Benefit Cosmetics, $22). And after apply the lip color, "The trick is to put a dab of gloss in the same color as the lipstick on top of the lipstick," says JoJo Gutfarb from Bella Sante Spa in Boston.

3. Use a lip liner that is darker than your lipstick

"Draw a line above your natural lip line to increase the size of your lips," says Beauty Vlogger Ashley Chennel. "Bright, bold colors also give the illusion of larger lips as well."

More: 5 Ways to get creative with 1 lipstick shade

4. Try contouring your lips

Similar to how you would contour your face — using your lip liner and lipstick. "Apply the darker color in the creases on your lips and blend it into the lipstick as well as over line your lips with the same color [as your lips]," Chennel says.

If lips are really thin, create the appearance of a fuller lip by putting a dot of a lighter color in the center of the bottom lip.

5. Highlight the Cupid's bow

Targeting the area above your lips where the lip line has a dip in it, use a highlighter pen of lighter concealer to accentuate your lips.

More: 13 Lipstick shades to know and love

6. Try a colorless lip definer

If a darker lipliner gives you '90s flashbacks and you're not prepared to go there again, consider a colorless liner. "Since it is colorless you can slightly over draw your natural shape, which will give the appearance of a larger, more plump lip," says Makeup artist Liz Evenson from Pyara Aveda. One to try: Aveda's Nourish-Mint Lip Definer (Aveda, $20), which has natural ingredients like peptide technology, organic jojoba and spearmint to plump up lips and smooth fine lines, Evenson says.

9. Apply a lip-plumping gloss

Opt for a product that does double-duty by giving your lips a boost of color and hydrating and plumping them. Aveda's Nourish-Mint Rehydrating Lip Glaze comes in 15 bright and neutral shades and uses peptide technology to plump lips by an average of 13 percent, Evenson says (Aveda, $18). Another lip plumper that is all the rage among makeup artists? Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme (Too Faced, $28), a clear gloss and serum that can be used during the day or at night to boost collagen and moisturize lips.

Chocolate graveyard cupcakes: An adorable treat with a surprise inside

These chocolate graveyard cupcakes are easy to make, incredibly delicious and come with a spooky surprise! Coffins!

The cupcakes themselves come together in a pinch. I used individual Kit Kat Bites for the coffins, and Milano cookies for the tombstones. You can find these at your local grocery store.

Tombstone Cupcakes
Image: Christina Ozon/SheKnows

First, you'll want to start with any chocolate cake mix, or your favorite chocolate cupcake recipe. I prefer Devil's Chocolate — very Halloween-appropriate — for a rich flavor. Bake the cupcakes as per the instructions on the box or recipe.

Make sure they cool completely before you start cutting them, or you will have a mess on your hands!

You'll want to make two incisions in the cupcake, using the picture below as a diagram. One long, deep line to place your cookie inside to be the tombstone, and a circle that will be the hole for your coffin!

Tombstone Cupcakes
Image: Christina Ozon/SheKnows

Make sure to cut the circle at an angle, so it makes a cone. You'll want to save the "cap."

Tombstone Cupcakes

Place the Kit Kat piece — your "coffin" — inside the hole.

Tombstone Cupcakes
Image: Christina Ozon/SheKnows

Place icing on the bottom of the cap, and re-seal to hide the coffin.

Carefully wedge the tombstone cookie into the other incision you made with the knife. If it breaks the cupcake a little, it's OK! We can hide that delicious mess with icing.

You can use any chocolate icing you like to frost the cupcake. Make sure to hide any cracks or lines. If you really want to get creative, you can use green decorating icing to make grass on the edges.

Now, the dirt for our grave. You can use crumbled cookies or an extra cupcake.

Spooky graveyard cupcake recipe

Yields 12 cupcakes

Ingredients:

  • 12 Chocolate cupcakes (can be from a box or your favourite recipe)
  • 1 Container chocolate icing (or your favorite recipe)
  • 12 Milano cookies
  • 12 Kit Kat bite pieces
  • 1 cup crumbled cookie or cupcake
  • 2 cups whipped cream
  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips

You will need a sharp knife for this recipe.

Directions:

  1. Bake your cupcakes and allow them to cool completely.
  2. Using a knife, cut the cupcake as directed in the diagram above: 1 straight line at the top of the cupcake for your tombstone, and then a circle for your grave. Make sure to create a cone when you cut the circle, keeping the part you cut out.
  3. Carefully press a Kit Kat piece into the hole. Place some icing on the bottom of the cone you just cut out, and press it back into place to hide the coffin.
  4. Carefully wedge a Milano cookie into the straight line. If you break the cupcake a little, it's okay! We can hide it with icing.
  5. Frost the cupcake, making sure to hide any cracks or lines. If you really want to get fancy, you can add some green icing around the edges for grass.
  6. Add your crumbled cookie or cupcake over the top for dirt.

1. This is the hearing that never ends...

Yesterday, Hillary Clinton spent 11 hours getting yelled at by the Benghazi committee. They questioned her about everything from her emails — those damn emails, as Bernie Sanders would say — to holes in Benghazi security. This is the eighth congressional investigation into what happened in Benghazi and almost no new information was revealed at the hearing. Clinton remained calm and poised throughout. Some might even say she acted, ahem, presidential. — The New York Times

2. It's official

Paul Ryan is officially running for House Speaker. Earlier in the week, he set forth demands for the Republican Party, including changing some rules, allowing him more time with his family than the average Speaker and supermajority support within his party. The Republicans nodded and said, "Whatever you say, Honey." Next week they'll vote to make it official. Meanwhile, Sheryl Sandberg took some heat for giving Paul Ryan her "Lean In Award of the Day." She publicly praised his concerns about family time, while forgetting that he also voted against equal pay for women and has a horrible voting record on equal rights. Oops. — Washington Post / Gawker

3. Back off, Patricia

Hurricane Patricia, the strongest hurricane ever measured, is currently barreling towards southwest Mexico. The storm has been upgraded to a Category 5 and is sustaining winds up to 200 miles per hour. Experts warn it could trigger catastrophic flooding and waves over 40 feet. It's headed directly for the Mexican tourist capitals of Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta. It should make landfall late this afternoon or in the early evening. RHONY's Heather Thomson addresses company's unfortunate lawsuit

More: New reports state Heather Thomson quit RHONY to save her marriage

Thomson's business, Yummie by Heather Thomson, is reportedly planning to fire manager of the company Eric Rothfeld over claims that he barred filming of the show in the company's offices, a decision that, according to Us Weekly, negatively impacted her company's revenue.

"Our lawyers have asked me not to talk about the case until it is resolved," Thomson told Us Weekly in a statement. "All we can hope for is a speedy result so I can get back to the business of running this wonderful brand."

More: RHONY's Carole Radziwill has a lot to say about her castmate's exit

Thomson may be suing Rothfeld for allegedly hurting her brand, but he is not going to be easy to replace, especially since he is part owner of Thomson's company — which focuses on creating shapewear and athletic wear that fits and flatters.

Thomson also spoke about the lawsuit with Entertainment Tonight, referring to it as "an unfortunate distraction."

"I'm hoping for a positive result in a very short time so I can get back to focusing on what's important: the business of my ever-expanding Yummie brand," she added.

A motions hearing is set in the case for Oct. 30.

Thomson previously revealed that she was leaving The Real Housewives of New York to concentrate on her business, but we don't think she had dealing with lawsuits in mind when she made those comments.

I make my sister pay for it. But it's always the epic party, and everyone goes all, all out. I can't wait for Halloween."

How can Hudson possibly top this theme? We hope to find out.

2. To heck with the rabbit — your pet could be a Trix cereal box star

General Mills is removing artificial flavors and colors from Trix cereal, and in celebration, it figured it might as well get rid of its cartoon rabbit mascot in favor of the real thing too. For the next three weeks, General Mills is hosting an open casting call for a real pet rabbit to be featured as the honorary Trix mascot on a limited run of cereal boxes in the winner's hometown. Best of all, other pets are invited to apply, so long as they're in a bunny costume (now if only I could find a pair of bunny ears that fit my goldfish, Marvin...). Upload your pet picture here, and who knows? Maybe they'll get a chance to be a star. — General Mills

3. Yelp is not suing South Park (though it totally sounds like something they would do)

In yet another case of satire going completely over our heads, a parody article on NBC.com.co had everyone thinking Yelp was going to sue South Park to the tune of $10 million after a recent episode lampooned users of the restaurant review site. But the "news" spread like wildfire — maybe because, well, it really seemed like something Yelp would do (I mean, the South Park episode was pretty on point). To everyone's surprise, Yelp then actually responded to the satirical article's viral status with a good-humored response and told Eater, "We have no interest in legal action against the fantastic team that makes the South Park magic happen." — Eater

4. Subway's Sandwich Artists will be forced to measure your sub. Yes, really

We knew that somehow the people who complained about Subway's sandwiches being slightly shorter than the stated 12 or 6 inches were going to make our lives more difficult, and we were right. After a series of lawsuits over its 11-inch "footlong" subs, Subway will now require employees to measure all of their bread to make sure it's really 6 or 12 inches long. Because having to tell the person making your sandwich every single ingredient you want (even though the ingredients are listed on the menu board) doesn't already take enough time. We would gladly forgo the last inch of flavorless sub bread if it meant getting out of the store before our clothes were permanently tainted by that unique "Subway smell" for the rest of the day. But hey, at least we're not getting lied to by those corporate sub-heads anymore, right? — Delish

It's the moment maybe, like, three of you have been waiting for: Wu-Tang Clan is finally getting its own craft beer. From Philadelphia craft beer makers Dock Street Brewery, the Dock Street Beer Ain't Nothing to Funk With is a golden saison that was aged in red wine barrels while being serenaded by the Wu-Tang Clan's music on repeat using special headphones that fit the barrels. The beer allegedly has a "new level of tart and funk," along with a 6.7 percent ABV. If you live in Philadelphia, you're in luck, because the brew will be available only at Dock Street's brewpub in West Philly and to limited markets online. — Philly.com

5 Common ailments that might not require antibiotics

$

Antibiotic resistance is when infectious organisms adapt to the antibiotic intended to kill them, rendering the antibiotic useless. There are about 23,000 deaths from antibiotic resistant superbugs in the United States per year, a number that is expected to rapidly grow, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The reasons for superbugs are complex — and aggravated by inappropriate use in both human patients and livestock.

One of the most common misconceptions about antibiotics is that they are effective against all infections — the truth is, they’re not. Antibiotics only kill bacteria. The harms of inappropriate antibiotics use go beyond resistance — there are multiple side effects, a high cost, allergic reactions and more.

But doctors and patients can curb antibiotic resistance through a better understanding about when these medications should be used. Here are the top ailments when unnecessary antibiotics are prescribed — and what you can try instead.

The common cold

No one likes having a cough, runny nose, sneezing or fever, but the average adult will have two to four colds per year. Since the culprit is viral, antibiotics won’t shorten the duration or improve the symptoms of a cold.

Try instead: humidified air, zinc lozenges, rest, hydration, products with antihistamines, decongestants, Pelargonium sidoides extract, Andrographis paniculata or analgesic properties (Tylenol/NSAIDs)

Pinkeye

Also known as conjunctivitis, the majority of pinkeye infections are caused by viruses. So, those antibiotic eye drops are likely not doing anything. Even some bacterial pink eye infections resolve on their own with time. But, be careful — pink eye can also be caused by other things, like allergies or herpes, so it’s best to see your doctor.

Try instead: artificial tears, cold compresses and frequent hand-washing since this is highly contagious

Sinus infection

Sinusitis strikes more than 30 million Americans per year, often resulting in nasal stuffiness, facial fullness, pain, headaches and fevers. Again, the cause is often viral. High fevers or symptoms lasting longer than seven to ten days could indicate a bacterial infection and warrant antibiotics.

Try instead: nasal saline irrigation and Tylenol for fevers

Skin abscess

A collection of pus under the skin is usually caused by bacteria. The key here is that just opening the skin and draining the pus out is often the best cure. Antibiotics are not routinely needed and should only be given to certain patients, like those with a fever, older/younger ages, or with surrounding skin infection.

Try instead: Warm compresses to promote drainage following the “incision and drainage” procedure

Ear Infection

This one may come as a surprise since 15 million antibiotics prescriptions are written for ear infections annually. Turns out, children who are older than 2 years often get better without antibiotics, regardless of if the infection is caused by a virus or bacteria. There are instances that require antibiotics, so be sure to consult a doctor for an ear infection.

Try instead: over-the-counter pain reliever, like Tylenol (seeing a trend here?)

Keeping track of when you need and don’t need antibiotics can be confusing so it’s best to have a trusting relationship with a primary care physician that can help you navigate this medical maze.

Evangeline Lilly is not 'flaunting' her post-baby bikini body

Lilly is a beautiful actress (most famous for her role on Lost) and yes, much of her fame is based on her looks. But she is also a mother. She has a 4-year-old son, Kahekili, with her partner Norman Kali. And now she has the second baby, too. She has been notoriously publicity shy about her kids and now, it is easy to see why.

Because it would be really great if we could get past the notion that any woman who dares to wear a bathing suit post baby (or ever, really) is "flaunting" her body. Sometimes they are just wearing a bathing suit. Sometimes (gasp!) they might just want to swim.

The truth is, this happens to every woman and every actress all the time. And it's high time it stopped. As women, we already feel scrutinized and analyzed when we are in our bathing suits. Believe me, I know every flaw. I know the places I could use some "work" and I know I don't feel comfortable in a bathing suit at my community pool because it always feels like a balancing act between looking too weirdly conservative and prudish or, alternatively, being accused of "flaunting" something. All we really want to do is go to the pool, for goodness sake.

More: Why white tattoos are a terrible idea

Luckily, I am not a celebrity. So I can only imagine how Lilly and all other women feel. The post-baby body is strange and confusing. Nothing is where it was before and every woman feels a little self-conscious whether she is famous or not. For an actress, it is that much worse. Yes, Lilly looks amazing, but that is really beside the point. The point is she just pushed a baby out. Her body just did an amazing thing and is now recovering. It is normal to not have super-tight abs and be soft in places that were not before. It is fine.

Even so, we feel self-conscious about it. Every woman does. It takes enormous courage to put on that bathing suit again. No one is "flaunting" anything. Most of the time, we are just trying to enjoy our time with our family and get used to the bodies that have been altered so drastically.

More: 5 Things I’m scared to tell my daughter about her period

Magazines need to get past this stuff. Congratulations to Lilly on the birth of her child. She is a strong woman who has so much to look forward to with her family. Seeing her happy on the beach is empowering and great. How she looks is completely secondary. The only thing she is flaunting is her radiant happiness.

Gillian Flynn’s 'The Grownup' is a creepy short story worth picking up

The Grownup by Gillian Flynn

When an opportunity presents itself to start working as a “psychological intuitive,” the narrator meets Susan Burke, a woman who is afraid her house is haunted. From there, a series of strange events and lies puts the narrator in a precarious situation.

One of the most admirable parts of Flynn’s writing is that she allows her characters — many of which are female narrators — to be flawed, often fringe individuals, and they refuse to be self-pitying or ashamed. The narrator of "The Grownup" is not unaware of the judgement toward her sexual profession and is willing to poke fun at herself and her means of getting by. “I’d say, ‘I’m in customer service,’ which was true. To me, it’s a nice day’s work when you make a lot of people smile. I know that sounds too earnest, but it’s true. I mean, I would rather be a librarian, but I worry about the job security. Books may be temporary, dicks are forever.”

Flynn also doesn’t shy away from social commentary, even in a piece as short as this. The narrator comes from a rough childhood and says, “I have an arrest record for a few petty thefts, dumb stuff I did at eighteen, nineteen, twenty, that will ensure I never ever ever get a decent job…” while still maintaining that her circumstances are largely a product of choice, or at the very least, finding a way to survive.

The story is wry and funny, briefly spooky and thrilling in the very particular way that Flynn likes to surprise her readers.

Boy's violent reaction to girl's rejection is going viral (VIDEO)

The video starts with a pretty typical preteen scene: There is a young boy playing basketball as two girls ride past on bikes. The boy greets the girls and is met with a sour response: "F*** you." The boy's immediate reaction is to chuck his basketball at one of the girls as she rides by on her bike, causing her to crash in the street.

Warning: NSFW — video clip contains strong language

This 24-second YouTube clip is quickly gaining viral attention because something about it doesn't sit quite right. We're not just seeing boys and girls acting up when they play together — we're seeing the first signs of a much bigger problem.

More: 4-Year-old girl nails response to a bullying boy after she was called ugly

Now, to be crystal clear, we don't know anything about this young boy. He could be a fine and upstanding Boy Scout type who made a mistake and acted immaturely, with his aggressive actions unfortunately caught on video. We also know these girls weren't on their best behavior either, but using strong language doesn't mean a person deserves a physical attack.

It's the bigger picture that's the real problem here. We've seen these boy-meets-girl attacks before that are normally brushed off by parents as "boys being boys" or "kids being kids." But what happens when the 4-year-old girl who was punched by a boy at school "because he liked her" grows up into the 18-year-old YouTube vlogger who says her boyfriend hits her because he loves her?

That's the big problem we're talking about. After watching a viral video like this of a boy hitting a girl because she didn't like him back, it's easy to brush it off or even get defensive. Why does everyone keep making a big deal out of small childhood moments? Isn't this just one more story that triggers parents to overreact?

More: 10 Domestic violence facts we all should be taking very seriously

For parents of boys and for parents of girls, this viral video is important. Parents of girls can look at this clip and realize how critical it is to teach their young daughters to respect themselves — and to respectfully stand their ground when rejecting a come-on — before things get physical. And as much as we don't want to hear it, parents of boys have an even bigger responsibility here. While no one's accusing this young boy of anything more sinister than being a teenage jerk, we can't ignore the fact that we're living in a culture where rape and domestic violence are routinely swept under the rug.

Fast-forward 10 years, and one young boy's "innocent" altercation with another young girl quickly becomes part of the problem if we choose to not talk about it.

More: 'Slap her' viral video misses the mark with violence against women (VIDEO)

Yes, this is uncomfortable to talk about, but it doesn't make a situation where a boy hits a girl because he doesn't get what he wants any less dangerous. The best way to approach this is the way we've climbed every other parenting mountain so far, starting with those sleepless newborn nights: one step at a time. Whenever a story like this comes up in the news, talk to your sons about it, and explore more appropriate ways to react. And when your sons get older, don't let "rape" and "abuse" be the taboo words that you never bring up in your house.

It's not overreacting to take any and every opportunity to teach our boys to respect women.

Cop to breastfeeding mom: 'Have more respect for yourself' (VIDEO)

This time, however, the interloper intent on forcing a mom to go home or feed her kid on a toilet? A police officer.

Rosalyn Mizzell of Omaha, Nebraska, has a 4-month-old son, Calvin, who, like many babies, feeds on demand. He's also exclusively breastfed, which means that when he got hungry while Mizzell was attending a town hall meeting on Wednesday night, she fed him, never expecting that there would be fallout for something so simple.

There was.

Breastfeeding complaint

Breastfeeding complaint

A man, who was "offended" by Mizzell feeding her child, went and tattled on her to a police officer, who bravely stood up to ensure that the fragile sensibilities of the other forum attendees wouldn't be likewise offended by the sight of a stray bit of side boob.

More: Even Disney princesses can't breastfeed in public without harassment

According to Mizzell, here's what the officer said to her: "Don't do that in front of me. Have more respect for yourself and everybody else here."

First of all, wow.

Second, there's something profoundly wrong with someone whose entire job is to understand and enforce the laws of their state not knowing that the laws in their state specifically mandate that as long as a mother is allowed to be in a place, she's also allowed to pop her breast into her child's mouth and feed them, without regard to some random dude and random cop's feelings on the matter. We can only conclude that the officer didn't know the law, considering the fact that she told Mizzell she would cite her for indecent exposure if she didn't comply with her directive.

More: How to wean a breastfeeding child

Her directive, let's remember, for Mizzell to "have more respect" for herself, brings us to this: Just because you don't respect somebody for breastfeeding doesn't mean they don't respect themselves. That's called projection, and it's positively ridiculous to do.

You can be sure that Mizzell respects herself just fine, thank you. She told the officer that she was going to take a hard pass on her request to stop feeding her hungry child, and no charges were filed against her, because she wasn't doing anything wrong.

Here's the thing: It really doesn't matter what you or anyone else thinks or feels about public breastfeeding. Forty-nine states have laws in place that allow women to breastfeed wherever they damn well choose, as long as they're authorized to be there (what's the deal, Idaho?). If something about a mother feeding her child is offensive to you, you basically have a standing invitation to rage internally and rant on Facebook, but you can't compel them to stop, and you can't enlist the police in your crusade.

Or you can, but unlike this police officer, most will likely tell you to cry some more, build a little bridge and get over it, because the mother isn't doing anything wrong.

More: Woman shares her memories of being breastfed until she was 5

Recognize that your discomfort is your problem and yours alone. You don't get to tell women that they aren't respecting themselves just because you're antsy about it. And you definitely don't get to write yourself a free pass to actually be disrespectful and then try to offload it onto them because OMG boobs.

As for Mizzell, she's filing a formal complaint against the lawbreaking officer, despite the stunning fauxpology she got from her, which Mizzell summarizes as essentially being, "I was offended. Other people were offended. If you wanted to breastfeed, you could have done it in the bathroom or stayed home."

Nope.

Listen, if you're going to choose to be a police officer, at least have a little respect for yourself and learn about the laws you'll be enforcing. If you can't do that, maybe it would just be better to just stay at home.

School forced to apologize for teaching sixth-graders about gender identity

In fact, Derek Grafton went to the news with the story, saying he felt that the art teacher's decision to lead a class discussion on gender identity was way out of line. The school has since apologized, saying the poster is intended for staff use and shouldn't be displayed in the classroom. Staff there use the poster for professional development so teachers have a better understanding of gender identity — so they can help all students feel welcome as they walk through the doors each day.

MoreTransgender waitress's post about family eating in her restaurant goes viral

However, the poster was still hanging up, and when a student asked about it, the art teacher had a long conversation with the kids about it. Gender identity was the only thing discussed — there was no talk about sexuality or sexual attraction. Grafton still wasn't cool with it and said his big concern was that the school had taken a step into territory he wasn't comfortable with — that schools shouldn't be teaching morals, ethics and values. That's the parents' job, he explained.

Of course it's a parent's job. But does that mean it's not OK or necessary for schools to supplement?

Schools do teach morals, values and ethics. They always have, and they always will. Children are taught to not cheat, to not put their hands on other students, to be responsible and to work hard. Who says that broadening a child's ideas of gender identity is immoral or unethical?

MoreMom captures moment transgender teen gets first hormones in amazing video

Teaching kids about different ways people identify themselves is not going to make them transgender. It's not going to make them gay. But it may open them up to the possibility that it's OK to be those things and to be more loving and accepting of those who aren't cisgender and straight. And for those whose genders don't quite fit with their biological sex, this can pave the way for self-acceptance as well, which is crucial for well-being and a better outlook on the future.

As people are becoming more aware of different gender identities and being transgender (which is only a part of that), this has become an important piece of a national conversation. If a school ignores that fact, then it really isn't doing its part to reduce bullying, which can have (and has had) tragic results. The more education kids have and the earlier they have it, the better outcomes can be for those who have had to work very hard to deal with how society treats those who are different.

MoreTransgender homecoming queen makes school history

The hate many have for those with nontraditional gender identities is horrifying to behold, and the consequences can be shattering. Yes, it would have been better for this school to have informed parents before such a talk took place (after all, you can opt your kids out of sex ed), but since a teacher decided to answer a child's question honestly, without the baggage that such a charged topic can bring along, it's hard to find fault with him.

More: Women wage war on Jeremy Renner over pay gap comments

They've denied there being any chance of a real-life relationship in the past, and now, Bradley Cooper is speaking out again to reassure us all that he's never, ever going to fall for Jennifer Lawrence.

The two play on-screen lovers pretty much all the time. They're also off-screen buddies, and their chemistry is pretty undeniable — just ask anyone who's seen Silver Linings Playbook. They've also co-starred in American Hustle, Joy and Serena, giving audiences plenty of chances to see them in action together. It's no wonder everyone's constantly wondering when they'll make it official.

More: Jennifer Lawrence could end up dating Rob Kardashian... seriously

But when Howard Stern asked Cooper that question, the answer was the same as it's ever been.

"When are you two going to have sex?" Stern asked during an interview with Cooper on his SiriusXM radio show.

"Never," Cooper immediately responded.

He continued on to explain it was director David O. Russell who first introduced the two.

"We did Silver Linings Playbook together. We got along great," Cooper explained. "It just didn’t happen. It’s not the way we are together."

40-year-old Cooper has previously said he can't date Lawrence because, in her early 20s, she's too young for him. But soon after making those comments, Cooper started dating 23-year-old model Suki Waterhouse.

"I said that once on the carpet as a diffuse thing and then it became a thing because the girl I was seeing was as young as she was," Cooper told Stern.

Cooper has since broken things off with Waterhouse and is now linked to 29-year-old supermodel Irina Shayk.
