Which Grey's Anatomy 'ship should Shonda Rhimes save: Japril or Calzona?

$

0

It's no secret Grey's fans get really into the show's many couples, or 'ships, as they are called. After all, up until this last season, the show was centered largely on a 'ship that started in the very first episode between Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd (excuse me while I go sob quietly in the corner for a few minutes).

More: Grey's Anatomy spoilers and other stuff to know about Season 12

So it only makes sense that, after a few seasons, the show is returning to its roots: relationship drama. Well, that and girl power, but that's a whole other recap. Two of the top Grey's 'ships — Japril and Calzona — had pretty telling moments tonight that made me wonder, "Who should Shonda save?"

So, let's compare. First up is Dr. Jackson Avery and Dr. April Kepner. Or...

Japril

Grey's Japril
Image: ABC

We can't imagine how difficult last season was for them as a couple, considering their arc gutted us. Between getting pregnant unexpectedly to not agreeing on fundamental belief systems to losing their baby, things were fragile (at best) when Kepner decided to extend her stay overseas as a trauma surgeon for the army.

Fast-forward to this season, where Kepner comes back but Avery will barely look at her. Then, tonight, as she is trapped in a glass containment unit, thanks to a suspicious rash, they have a brutal argument and Avery drops a bomb — "I'm not sure we are worth fighting for." Ouchie.

Later, he comes back to tell Kepner she has been cleared when she tells him she does believe they are worth fighting for. In a gripping scene, she asserts, "I know we are something worth fighting for, so I am going to fight for the both of us... I will fight to the death, because that is what I vowed to do."

So, here's the thing: I'm totally #TeamApril at this moment. Yes, she left when he asked her not to. But, wait, what world are we in? Homegirl left to go save lives. Not to mention, she tried so many times to explain to Avery why she needed to go — that was how she had to deal with the loss of her child, an unfathomable and profoundly life-altering experience.

I interviewed the lovely Jerrika Hinton recently, who plays Dr. Stephanie Edwards, and in watching tonight's episode, I couldn't help but recall a part of our conversation. She told me she never liked Edwards and Avery together, because she never felt like her character really knew who she was in that relationship. Plus, Avery obviously never truly appreciated her. This led to an epiphany... is Avery a tool? He seems to be the common denominator here. Alas, I suspect this will be an unpopular opinion, as fans are hard-core about Japril's fate.

Still, onto the next — Dr. Callie Torres and Dr. Arizona Robbins, or...

Calzona

Grey's Calzona
Image: ABC

Last season, Torres and Robbins decided to separate after a series of events that included Robbins straying. Ugh, it was the worst. On their final day of counseling, Robbins declared her love for Torres, explaining that the last 30 days had proven how much she needs her. But Torres explained that the last 30 days had been liberating for her; she even kinda equated working on their marriage to a slow death.

So, this season thus far, we have learned that Torres is seeing someone new — and she's pretty pumped about this chick. This, in turn, drives Robbins wild with jealousy. Which, in turn, gives fans hope these two will find their way back to each other.

And, to be honest, I'm on board. I, too, heart Calzona. Even when they aren't a couple, they seem to support each other reciprocally — in a way that Avery and Kepner can't seem to get the hang of. But what do you think? Which 'ship do you think deserves to be saved?

8 Flawless fall layering tips to perfect your look

$

But be warned: Layers gone wrong can leave you looking more hobo than boho. Just a few tweaks can be the difference. But not to worry, we've got you covered. Here's a guide to layering fall's freshest fashion that will have you strutting down the sidewalk instead of looking like you just might live there.

1. Menswear

menswear

menswear

Part preppy '80s, part utility and always so fun to wear, layering fall's menswear trend is tricky business. Here, menswear is layered, but impeccably tailored, which lets you add a jacket over a sweater without bulk. Also notice the light, feminine touches used to counter all the stark, heavy menswear lines, like the sparkly shoes and the light, flowy and hair, makeup and nails. If you love the menswear look, invest in a couple of staple items — like a great, crisp shirt or a beautiful overcoat — and splurge on getting the pieces perfectly tailored to your figure. And remember to balance any menswear-inspired looks with dainty, girly touches to lighten up the look.

2. Flannel shirt

flannel shirt layering

flannel shirt layering

Helloooo? Oh, it's 1992 calling and it's so excited to see the flannel shirt trend come back. But be careful! You can't just throw on a flannel shirt and call it a day or you'll look more like the Northwestern lumberjacks who first inspired the flannel shirt craze among the Seattle grunge set. Fashion-forward flannel is made for layering. Here, a slim-fit flannel is unbuttoned to keep an unflattering print from cutting off the eye and is then topped off with a cream cardi to keep the print from overwhelming the whole look. A master class in flannel layering for fall.

3. Kimono

kimono layering for fall

Light, flowy kimonos in rich, beautiful colors are all the rage and are an effortless way to dress up your fall basics. Here, a black dress and biker boots are treated to a little fun, courtesy of a cute kimono. What makes this look work? The plain, substantial pieces worn underneath keep the look grounded and let the kimono really shine. Don't pair fall's kimono with anything too flimsy underneath or you'll look like a crazy person who wondered out of her boudoir. Keep anything worn underneath simple or the whole thing will just look like a big mess.

4. Jewelry

layered necklaces

layered necklaces

There's an art to layering lots of jewelry together and making it look hopelessly cool. Done wrong, you can look like a girl playing in her mom's jewelry box. Check out this set of strands from Pam Jackman of Bloom Boutique. What keeps this set from looking like a mess? The similar colors and materials. Layer pieces in your own collection by color and texture and make sure to look for necklaces of varying lengths. Ditto for rings and bracelets. The trick to pulling off the look is making it look like a curated set, rather than just a bunch of stuff you threw on in a hurry.

5. Tights

tights, tunics, boots fall

tights, tunics, boots fall

Today's tights are made to make a statement. And if you remember nothing else, remember this tried-and-true fall layering formula: Tunic + boots + tights = perfection. And don't be afraid to go a little cray with your tights. Between the tunic and the boots, you can put just about any pattern on your legs and it will flatter. Promise.

6. Shorts

layer shorts for fall

layer shorts for fall

Give those trusty summer jean shorts one last hurrah this fall by layering tights underneath and a cardigan on top. But one tip: Since you'll have lots of visible layers at the same time, keep the color palate basic — like this beauty does here with her black and white outfit that seems like something she just threw on but looks oh, so cool.

7. Color

white layers

white layers

Monochromatic layers are a great way to add drama and texture to your look without a lot of bulk. Check out this luscious winter white getup with loads of layers that still look light as air. Swoon.

8. Scarves

fall layered scarves

fall layered scarves

Scarves are the hardest-working pieces in the fashion business. Functional and beautiful, scarves should add an element of texture and interest to your outfit, rather than overwhelm it. Here, scarves help outfits easily transition from summer to fall and offer a low-commitment way to add trendy colors and patterns into your wardrobe.

5 Things you probably didn't know about Julie Andrews

$

I know about her in a more personal way: My maternal grandmother, a talented seamstress, worked as one of her dressmakers. She always said that Julie Andrews was a kind, fair employer who was interested in keeping up with the times. No wonder Julie Andrews became a social media sensation this year in a surprise appearance at the Oscars, when she greeted Lady Gaga — who had just paid homage to her with a medley of songs from The Sound of Music.

In honor of Julie Andrews' 80th birthday, here are some of my favorite, lesser-known things about her.

More: Julie Andrews is down for a Fifty Shades of Grey-style spanking (VIDEO)

1. She's a children's book author

Most people don't know that she is the author of over 20 books, including several children's books. My favorite and the focus of many childhood memories is The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles, which is now available in a 30th anniversary edition, with a foreword from Andrews. I love the fantastical world she created where the Whangdoodle lives among other creatures without any contact with humans, who have forgotten him. That is, until one human family makes an astounding discovery.

2. She's royalty (for real)

We loved watching her in The Princess Diaries where she played the role of Queen Clarisse Marie Renaldi of Genovia, but did you know that in 2000 Andrews was actually made a dame (that's Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth II for services to the performing arts?

More: 2015 Oscars winners: See the complete list here live!

3. She's the mother of reinvention

When her career faltered in the 1990s, she found a second wind in the 2000s by starring in The Princess Diaries movies alongside "it girl" of the time Anne Hathaway. More recently, she played Queen Lillian (married to the frog king) in the Shrek animated films and followed them with Despicable Me, where she gave voice to Gru's soul-crushing mother Marlena.

4. She inspired a fun phenomenon

Sing-Along-A Sound of Music became a social sensation in the United States, shortly after it started in the U.K. in 1999. That's when a night at the movies became a party — The Sound of Music would be screened in color, along with subtitles (and requisite bouncing ball) so the audience, dressed up as their favorite characters, could sing along. I actually had my birthday party at one of the screenings and got into the spirit by dressing like Maria herself, in a blond wig and dirndl (minus the chintz). Although it's no longer in most major theaters, the screening events are still going strong on some college campuses today.

5. Here's "something good" — she has more to do

Although Julie Andrews is 80 years young, she still has dreams to fulfill. For example, this past August, it was announced that she would direct My Fair Lady in 2016 at the Sydney Opera House. If that's not a great reason for all of us to head to Australia, I don't know what is.

I think we can all agree, the best word to describe Julie Andrews is a word she knows well — supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Sleepy Hollow Season 3's new ladies: Evil Pandora vs. seductive Betsy

Who will be the best new addition to the show? Read on and find out.

Warning! Spoilers ahead. Consider yourself warned.

Evil Pandora

In the first minute of the episode, Pandora (Shannyn Sossamon) managed to do something that not many others had before her: She made The Horseman of Death her bitch. Like, seriously, she waved her hand at his red-eyed horse, started to sing a song and, before you knew it, Death and his trusty steed were in a box. Talk about making an entrance. No one is likely to forget that one anytime soon.

From the moment she appeared onscreen, viewers were intrigued and Twitter was bursting with comments about the mysterious Pandora. She's evil, but that didn't seem to stop fans from instantly falling in love with her — and we can't blame them. She's set to bring a new kind of evil to the show, one that is also sexy. It's a different vibe than other nasty characters, such as The Horseman or Jeremy (John Noble). Right now she's one big mystery, but the fact that she's located right in our little town of Sleepy Hollow means we're bound to get answers about her really soon.

More: SPOILERS: How Sleepy Hollow is pushing more boundaries in Season 2

Badass Betsy Ross

This episode brought a new light to the person we've all known as the lady behind the American flag. As Ichabod (Tom Mison) said, Betsy (Nikki Reed) was much more than the "flag woman," and though we only saw a few brief moments with her, it appears that's quite the understatement. She, too, made a big impression her first scene, proving that she was a partner worthy of Ichabod. Dare we say that Betsy might even compare to Abbie?

Sleepy Hollow gif
Image: Giphy

Plus, there's the tantalizing knowledge that Betsy and Ichabod shared some "moments" in the past. Ichabod sidestepped Abbie (Nicole Beharie) and Jenny's questions, but it certainly looked like there might be more to them than just glances and that good luck kiss.

Sleepy Hollow - Nikki Reed as Betsy Ross
Image: Ian Somerhalder via Instagram

Unlike Pandora, Betsy is, unfortunately, stuck in the past and in Ichabod's memories for now. If this show has taught us anything, though, it's that characters in the past don't always stay there. Even if she is destined to only be brought to us via flashbacks, that still makes her an intriguing character. After all, who doesn't love spending some time in Ichabod's rich history? And though Pandora may seem like the tougher of the two ladies at this point, let's not forget that Betsy was one of Washington's top spies, who single-handedly managed to penetrate the British frontline.

Designer Edmond's win upsets Project Runway fans

More: Project Runway fans are furious because judges made wrong decision

Edmond's red dress

The challenge this week was to design a look that was both high-end and affordable for JustFab, which led to a skirmish among the judges, who couldn't even agree on who deserved the highest and the lowest scores. (Judge Nina García admitted on Twitter that they were all over the place.) Because the judging was so chaotic, some viewers suggested that there shouldn't be a winner. There was, though, but the decision to pick Edmond's look as the winner didn't go over well with fans, who thought it was unoriginal and boring.

This was Edmond's third win of the competition, and for Ashley, it was another time she was in the top but didn't win. Twitter was frustrated, not just because she didn't win (again), but because her design was more accessible to women who weren't models.

Ashley and Edmond are favorites whom viewers want to see at Fashion Week, and some on Twitter suggested that both could have won — Edmond's dress and Ashley's jacket. At this point in the season, the competition is about to get fiercer — after this week, there is no more immunity, although the Tim Gunn save still has yet to be used.

That's it!

How to make a fresh flower garland

Supplies:

  • A floral wire, cut to length of table (green would be best)
  • Green twigs with leaves from your garden
  • A few wild flowers from your garden
  • String
  • Scissors

Directions:

  1. First, measure the size of your table length and cut the wire accordingly — make it a bit longer than the table so that the garland can fall over both ends.
  2. Start making your garland by twisting the greenery twigs around the wire. Choose the number of twigs depending on how big and rich you want your garland to be. Then wrap the string around the twigs to keep them in place. Don't worry about the visible wire and string. We will take care of it at the end.
  3. Add flowers, tuck the flowers in between the twigs and wire, and secure with the string.
  4. Now add more twigs by twisting them around the garland to cover up the wire and string.
  5. Display your garland as a table centerpiece.

This simple DIY flower garland will make even the simplest table look so stylish.

One-pan veggie taco skillet makes healthy weeknight meals a cinch

Rather than using ground beef as in most taco dishes, I opted to use crumbled veggie burgers. They mimic real meat perfectly, and who knows? Some may not even realize it’s vegetarian if they aren’t paying attention.

Along with the "meat," there are beans, taco seasoning, cheese, crushed taco shells and all the toppings. Lime sour cream is optional, but it really gives the dish a nice, tangy flavor. It's a one-pan meal with everything you love about tacos.

  • 1/2 cup black beans
  • 1 envelope taco seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable broth or water
  • 4 crushed taco shells

McDonald’s to offer table service and self-service kiosks

CEO John Betts says lining up to pay for the same old burger will soon be a thing of the past.

More: McDonald's finally reveals the secret behind its fries

"It used to be uniformity, reliability, consistency, now everybody's got their own way of connecting with the world," he said.

McDonald's is also adding a premium-priced “Create Your Taste” burger to the menu, with nearly 30 different options, including five types of cheese and a dozen different toppings, allowing customers to fully personalize their orders.

Of course, self-serve kiosks come at a price. According to The Globe and Mail, this customized burger is more than 15 per cent higher than the cost of a regular Big Mac. In fact, a burger can cost as much as $50, depending on the extras.

Furthermore, according to University of Toronto marketing professor Avi Goldfarb, people tend to order more complex and higher-calorie items when ordering digitally, such as adding more toppings to a pizza. His research has found that digital ordering "often removes inhibitions that customers may have in ordering food from a person rather than a computer. They’re essentially not embarrassed.”

However, with Canada’s dismal unemployment rate holding steady at 6.8 per cent, it’s encouraging to see the franchise creating 15,000 jobs. This will translate roughly into 10 to 15 new employees per restaurant to fill new roles, including a greeter who will guide customers through the ordering process and new chefs to make the more complex made-to-order meals.

Customers who use the self-serve ordering system to get those personalized goodies can have their orders delivered directly to their table, and Betts said more employees will be needed to deal with the food delivery and clearing. The new job creation is timely, as it comes at the heels of federal adjustment to raise the minimum wage for five of the country's provinces.

RHOC’s Brooks Ayers take drastic measures to clear his name

It all seemed to surround the now ex-boyfriend of Vicki Gunvalson, Brooks Ayers.

Ayers has been plagued by accusations he is faking his cancer diagnosis. Fellow Housewives cast members have gone so far as to call his doctors' offices pretending to be potential patients and ask intrusive questions about the types of procedures they do to try to decide if they think Ayers is being treated there.

More: Brooks Ayers talks cancer and the night of drinking that resulted in backlash

Leading the witch hunt is most definitely Meghan King Edmonds. During an interview with Us Weekly, Ayers claimed that Edmonds and the other women are "manufacturing drama," and maintained that he is, in fact, currently fighting non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

"The only people in my life that I've been battling have been the women this year. And it’s nothing more than a manufactured storyline," he said, and continued, "It creates drama and relevance for them to be able to challenge somebody else's illness. I simply want to share with people that you can survive a relationship in the public eye and be there to nurture each other — Vicki through the loss of her mom, me battling cancer for a third time — and it turned into a circus."

More: RHOC fans are sick of the cancer storyline

And that circus got so out of control that Ayers is actually threatening to sue the ringleader, Edmonds, if she doesn’t "change her ways."

He has already taken steps to get Edmonds to stand down. He said, "Meghan has scoffed that, 'Oh my God, Brooks is threatening to sue me.' But what people don't know is that I have sent her a formal letter from my attorney… demanding certain things, and I do have significant ground if she doesn’t change her ways, and she’s got an opportunity to do that."

His cease and desist isn't the only thing he is dishing on. He weighed in on why he thinks she is attacking him so badly, saying, "[Meghan] doesn't really care about me sincerely, she cares about being relevant on the show. And that saddens me, and that’s immaturity on her part."

As for his health, Ayers revealed that he has gone against his oncologist’s wishes and has begun trying alternative methods to fighting his cancer after months of chemo treatments did not improve his numbers. He said, "I decided I would attack my body in a natural way.” He said he did his research about the new approaches he is trying, exclaiming, "What would I have to lose?"

"I don't think people understand the level of hurt," Beador continued.

"One day, David handed [our daughter] Stella his wedding ring and said, 'Give this to your mother, I don't want it anymore,' and that was a knife in my heart," she confessed.

Gone are the days when kids would pass notes in class to share secret messages. In 2015, it's all about the cellphone. The great thing about the advent of texting is that it allows parents to keep an eye on who their kids are talking with and what they're chatting about, but unless you know the meaning of all those acronyms, it can be hard to keep tabs on what's actually being said.

Here's a list of 25 commonly used texting abbreviations to help you increase your parental coolness level and keep your child safe at the same time.

Deen recently deeded her $1.3 million Savannah, Georgia, home to her husband Michael Groover, leading some to speculate that it was part of a financial settlement in a looming divorce case. A statement from Deen's rep explaining that the deed of gift was merely part of Deen's estate planning process did little to dispel the rumors.

But now Deen is speaking out — and she is defending her marriage.

"My marriage has always been good," she told Radar Online. "My husband is so supportive. He has a huge career. He is a harbor pilot. All these ships come in from all over the world and he gets on them and he parks them on the Savannah River. He has been so good about taking time off for me.

"This morning, two of our grandchildren came out to visit," she revealed. "So he took them to San Diego to the zoo and to SeaWorld. He said, 'Paula I am gonna do you a big favor, honey! I am gonna take those children and entertain them.' He has always been so supportive to take his things and put them aside to be with me."

More: Paula Deen tries to play up her sex appeal in new DWTS promo

Deen even said that Groover appreciates the changes in her body that her tough Dancing with the Stars fitness regimen is causing.

"My husband hugged me the other night and said, 'Paula, I feel changes.' That is good too, because I have a tire that I'd like to get rid of," she said. "Physically it's tough, because I hadn't been in a structured exercise program since I was 18 years old. So it is hard, honey! It is hard.

"Let me write cookbooks. Let me do cooking shows. It's all easy," she said. "But that dancing is challenging and I am certainly out of my comfort zone there."

Maybe Deen's success in her marriage will somehow translate to success on the dance floor.

More: Was the Princess Diana storyline still too soon?

In the nearly minute-and-a-half clip, Abby storms through the halls of the White House, racing to stop Fitz and Mellie's interview, which is supposed to assure the country that their marriage is amazing and Olivia is just a dear friend. But Olivia had just announced to the media and the world that she is, in fact, Fitz's mistress.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like she gets there in time, as Fitz can be seen telling the reporter, "Our marriage is stronger than ever, but we're human. It's hard when they attack our friends."

More: Shonda Rhimes claims motherhood isn't a job: Is she right?

And Mellie says the rumors "have no basis in the truth."

Even though Fitz, Mellie and Olivia will now have to deal with all their lies on top of the infidelity, Abby might actually have it worse.

She was the one, after all, who first dropped the absolute and utter lie that Mellie was still at the White House while she and Fitz were working things out, which then prompted the White House to take the sweeping-things-under-the-rug approach, which turned into this major fail.

More: Shonda Rhimes reveals the big picture all Grey's Anatomy fans are missing

The only thing that might save Abby at this point is Olivia's loyalty to her, which might mean that Abby could keep her job. And, if not, she can always become a gladiator again, and that wouldn't be a terrible thing. It's been a long time since we've seen the gang back together.

The bitter battle between mother and daughter goes back years, but after Kendra called Patti a "sadistic abuser" and likened their relationship to rape, Patti dropped hints on her Facebook page that she planned to get a lawyer involved. Now those plans are solidifying.

"Patti is looking to get an attorney not to sue for badmouthing her, but serve Kendra with a cease and desist to get Kendra to just stop talking about her altogether," a source close to the family told RadarOnline. "She's not looking for monetary (compensation) — she just wants it to stop."

"For Kendra to say the cruel and hurtful things she is saying about her mother (is unfair). They are not true," the source said. "She's trying to make her mom sound like this villain, but Patti is not this nasty person."

"Patti is absolutely devastated over this," the source continued. "She wants nothing more than to have a relationship with her daughter and grandkids. At this point, Patti would like nothing more than for Kendra to not talk about her and just wants Kendra to keep her mouth shut about her."

But the source has a prediction for what will actually happen if the papers are served: Kendra will use it as material on her reality show.

"Kendra will take it and run with it," the source said. "That will be a whole other bunch of episodes drawn out."

Kendra has not commented about her mom — off-camera, at least.

Spicy shrimp and freekeh soup — the ancient grain you're not using enough

This soup is so filling you can serve it as a meal on its own. If you haven’t tried freekeh yet, this is the perfect introduction to its heartiness and versatility. Spicy shrimp tops a bowl of this soup that also includes black beans and peas. It’s not only super flavorful, but it’s interesting too.

If you can’t find freekeh for this soup, then use rice, barley or farro instead. If you don’t have romaine lettuce on hand, then add spinach or another leafy green in its place. To make this soup a real breeze to get on the table quickly, cook the freekeh in advance. It takes only about 25 minutes to make, but when you’re short on time, this really helps.

Freekeh and spicy shrimp soup

Adapted from AARP

Serves 4

Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 19 minutes | Total time: About 30 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1-1/2 cups cooked freekeh
  • 18 large, precooked, frozen shrimp (thawed)
  • 2-1/2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 1 tablespoon chili-garlic paste
  • 2 teaspoons lime juice
  • 1/4 cup white onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 cups vegetable broth
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 (15 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas
  • 2 cups (packed) torn romaine lettuce
  • Nonstick cooking spray

Directions:

  1. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Lightly spray with the nonstick cooking spray, and set it aside.
  2. To a medium bowl, add 1/2 the olive oil and the chili-garlic paste, and mix to combine. Pat the shrimp dry with a paper towel, and then add them to the mixture.
  3. Use your hands to ensure the shrimp is well coated with the mixture. Place the shrimp on the foil-lined baking sheet, and place under the broiler of the oven for 2 minutes. Flip the shrimp over, and cook for another 2 minutes. Remove, and set aside.
  4. To a pot or Dutch oven over medium heat, add the remaining olive oil. When the oil is hot, add the onion, and cook for 3 to 4 minutes or until it begins to soften. Add the garlic, and cook for another 30 seconds.
  5. Add the vegetable broth, water, salt, ground black pepper, thyme, red pepper flakes, black beans and peas to the pot.
  6. Increase the heat, and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to simmer, and cook for about 10 minutes.
  7. Remove from the heat, and add the romaine lettuce. Stir to combine.
  8. Serve in individual bowls, and top each with 4 to 5 pieces of the shrimp.

Why Swedish scientists are advising you to stop feeding kids rice cakes

This warning comes from the Swedish National Food Agency (Livsmedelsverket) after researchers tested 102 rice products and found rice cakes to contain the highest level of arsenic. As rice cakes are a popular choice for children's snacks, experts felt parent's should be warned of the potential risks.

More: High levels of arsenic found in red wine, but don't panic

Sweden isn't the only country monitoring arsenic levels in rice products. According to Consumer Reportsrice cakes supply close to a child's weekly limit in one serving. And in line with this report, the Food Standards Agency advises that children under 5 years should not consume rice drinks in place of formula or breast milk, or as a dairy substitute. This stems from concerns regarding the volume of milk that children of this age consume, in proportion to their bodyweight.

More: How to encourage kids make smart food choices

What is the concern?

Rice absorbs more water when growing (up to ten times more than other grains), leading to a higher uptake of arsenic from both the water and soil. Arsenic is present in both organic (naturally occurring) and inorganic (from pesticides) form. Inorganic arsenic is a known carcinogen and it is this form that causes the most concern.

What can we do to reduce the risk?

Rinsing rice well before cooking and then boiling in a large volume of water can reduce the level of arsenic, however, according to Consumer Reports, rice cereal and rice pasta may contain more inorganic arsenic than their original study suggested. The FSA are currently carrying out a survey on infant foods, including exposure to rice products and arsenic. At present, there is no evidence to suggest a risk from baby rice, due to the small volume babies consume. Further advice for parents is expected once the findings of this study are known.

This may confuse you — it certainly seems to confuse, or even upset, other people who realize that this is a little girl wearing yellow, green or blue. To clarify, and to save us time arguing with strangers in the dairy aisle at the local grocery store, here are a few of the reasons my daughter doesn't happen to be wearing pink today.

1. Because all the pink stuff is in the laundry right now

With the true identity of A now (finally!) revealed, the second half of the season will pick up after college, following Ali, Hanna, Aria, Emily and Spencer as they figure out their post-grad future. As audiences will remember from the last season finale, at least a couple of the girls — including Ali, who stayed behind in Rosewood — are engaged or married, while several of the others are busy pursuing their careers. The entire group is brought back together after a major event forces everyone back to town.

More: 4 Major events we might see after the PLL Season 6 time jump

Fans have been looking forward to seeing what the time jump will bring for some time now, so it's exciting to learn that the season has wrapped. But I also can't help but feel a little nostalgic. After all, can you believe that PLL has been on air for six whole years already?

More: The Pretty Little Liars Season 6 flash-forward will likely upset fans

From the looks of things, the cast feels the same way. To celebrate the end of their work on Season 6, many of the show's stars, like Lucy Hale, Troian Bellisario and Tyler Blackburn, shared some emotional snapshots from their final filming days on Instagram. The photos, seen below, are guaranteed to remind you why you love this show. Check them out:

7 Ways Scott Disick's new girlfriend compares to Kourtney Kardashian

$

Scott Disick has been seen galavanting around New York City with a much younger blonde, and we immediately had to know not only everything about her but how she compares to ex-girlfriend Kourtney Kardashian.

The long-time pair, who share three young children together, split this summer after Disick was unable to keep it together, going on the "bender of his life," and getting caught getting cozy with another woman.

So what about this new woman?

Scott Disick's GF 4

Scott Disick's GF 4

The mysterious blonde, thanks to internet sleuths, we now know is Lindsay Vrckovnik. And here are a few things we know so far.

1. She’s 18

Vrckovnik graduated from high school with the Class of  2015. She posted this photo back in May. Vrckovnik is the one holding a can of beer in the black dress. She captioned it, "high schools dun [sic]."

More: Scott Disick continues to party so hard it's concerning fans (VIDEO)

And not only is she 18, but she lives in a dorm.

2. She’s a co-ed

She attends Parsons School of Design, a private art and design school located in the Greenwich Village neighborhood in NYC. Similar to Kardashian, she is ambitious and for all accounts, seems like a driven young woman. She has said she has plans of becoming a professional photographer and artist.

3. She's Canadian:

She is from Toronto, but is currently living in NYC while she goes to school.

Yet with youth and co-eds, comes partying.

4. She’s a party girl

Which is perfectly fine (and exciting!) for Vrckovnik. But for the 32-year-old father of three battling with addiction problems, probably not a recipe for success in getting your life back on track after an apparent spiral out of control.

Disick and Vrckovnik have been spotted spending late (very late!) nights together around bars and hotels in NYC. Recently the pair was spotted ended a bar-hopping session by going back to Disick’s hotel room around 6 a.m.

A peek at her Twitter account reveals she and her friends sure know how to throw down. They are in college now after all. Kardashian, on the other hand, with three young children and not being 18 years old isn't out all night living it up like Vrckovnik, but that doesn't mean she doesn't still have a good time.

5. She's funny

Mark this as strong similarity between the young ingenue and Kardashian, because if anyone has ever watched KUWTK you know that those girls love a good prank. Looking at more of Vrckovnik's tweets, I can't help but laugh. Quips and one-liners abound. Like this one:

Scott Disick's GF 3

6. She's a model

She is model for the Toronto-based Spot 6 Management agency, which was launched in 2009. She can be seen modeling backpacks in this video for Venque's Kickstarter video.

Scott Disick's GF 2

Scott Disick's GF 2

With the success and longevity of her reality show and with a mother like Kris Jenner, Kardashian has done her fair share of modeling, too. And of course you know she and her sisters run a successful clothing store, Dash.

More: Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick finally agree on a custody agreement

7. She’s a feminist

Vrckovnik isn't just a young ambitious model, she’s also a feminist artist after our own hearts.

During an interview with Daughter Runs, Vrckovnik’s response to the question about her art and her fascination with the recurring theme of distorting women is everything. She said, "I hate to sound very cliche Petra Collins / Tavi Gevinson and the whole Rookie 'feminist art' movement, but no one represents young women better than young women themselves. So really, I'm just sticking to what I know. I think females are very complex beings that are too often dumbed down in the average representation that society delivers of us. So I like my work to focus on that complexity and depth of feeling rather than their physical attractiveness."

Seriously, I wish I had that kind of forethought at 18 years old.

She seems like a girl who, were I 18 again (and I don't ever wish to be 18 again) I would like to hang out with, too. But what is Lord Disick thinking? It appears that the reality TV star still doesn't have his head on straight. He has three children, one still very young, and leaving your family to hang out with young blonde co-eds, no matter how much money or support the mother of your children has, is simply not cool.

And while Kardashian has said on several occasions that she is not only perfectly fine, but that she is taking this time to focus on her health and her children, it is hard to not think back to that KUWTK trailer of her crying over her former flame.

How to perform a self breast exam

How to do self breast exam
Image: Terese Condella/SheKnows

Step 1: Observe

Breast self exam step 1
Image: Terese Condella/SheKnows

Stand in front of a mirror with your shoulders straight and your hands on your hips. Examine your breasts for the following:

  • Breasts that are their normal shape, size and color
  • Breasts that are evenly shaped without visible distortion or swelling

If you observe any of these changes, bring them to your doctors attention immediately:

  • Dimpling, puckering or bulging of the skin
  • A newly-inverted nipple (one that goes in instead of pushing out) or a nipple that has completely changed position
  • Swelling, redness, rash or soreness

Step 2: Observe with raised arms

Breast self exam step 2
Image: Terese Condella/SheKnows

Still looking at the mirror, raise your arms above your head and examine your breasts using the directions in Step 1. Again, if you observe any of the changes listed above, bring it to your doctor's attention immediately. Many women find that performing this exam in the shower is the best method because their skin is wet and slippery.

Step 3: Watch for fluid

Examine your breasts to see if fluid is coming out of one or both of your nipples. It could come in the form of a watery, milky or yellow fluid, or blood. Healthy breasts should not secrete fluid (unless you are lactating).

Step 4: Lie down and examine

Self breast exam laying down
Image: Terese Condella/SheKnows

Next lie down on your side. Use your right hand to feel your left breast and then your left hand to feel your right breast. Use the first few finger pads of your hand; keep your fingers flat and together to use a circular motion (about the size of a quarter) on your breast. Keep your touch smooth but firm.

Make sure to feel the whole breast from top to bottom (collarbone to the top of your abdomen) and side to side (armpit to cleavage).

To ensure that you cover the whole breast, perform the circular motion in a steady and regular pattern. One way to do it is by beginning at the nipple, moving in larger and larger circles until you reach the outer edge of your breast. Or you can move your fingers vertically, in rows, as if you were mowing a lawn. (Hint: The vertical, up-and-down approach seems to work best for most women.) Using light pressure, feel all the tissue from the front to the back of your breasts and for the skin and tissue just beneath. Use medium pressure for tissue in the middle of your breasts and use firm pressure for the deep tissue in the back. Once you've reached the deep tissue, you should be able to feel down to your ribcage.

Step 5: Sit and examine

Self breast exam sitting down
Image: Terese Condella/SheKnows

Finally, sit or stand up and examine your breasts using the directions from Step 4. Again, be thorough in your examination, as early detection is the best way to beat this disease!
