Scream Queens' Dean Munsch and 8 top Red Devil suspects

More: Scream Queens: 7 Reasons the Red Devil is going to be as big as PLL's A

Moving on. First, it was revealed that there are two Red Devils. Yep, Scream Queens is totally pulling a Scream and I love every minute of it. Second, Dean Munsch might be the killer. Say what? That's right; Wes and Gigi suspect Dean Munsch to be the Red Devil. After they were both attacked (don't worry, they both survived) by the Red Devil with a chain saw, Wes immediately picked up said chain saw and declared to Dean Munsch's face, "You're the killer!"

It remains unclear why he thinks the college's serial killer is Cathy Munsch, but based on next week's promo, it looks like we'll get answers. Until next Tuesday's episode and more information is revealed, it's time to speculate about the top Red Devil suspects. Now that there are two it could be anyone, but here's who I've narrowed it down to.

1. Dean Munsch

She's been around that college campus for quite some time now, not to mention she seemingly helped cover up the death of that KKT sorority sister back in the day. Maybe she just wants to get revenge on all of the students for making her life a living hell. Or, you know, she could be the mastermind behind the Red Devils and is paying them to be killers.

2. Boone

It was revealed during the two-hour premiere that Boone isn't dead and is working with the Red Devil. Yep, he's totally one of the killers.

3. Chanel #2, aka Sonja

Is Chanel #2 really dead? According to Entertainment Weekly, Ariana Grande will return as Chanel #2, which means she could easily be alive and one of the Red Devils. As Ryan Murphy teased, "She’s recurring definitely. Everyone thinks she’s gone but she’s not gone. I wouldn’t say ghost. Nothing you think is happening is happening on the show. You think some people are dead — they’re not dead."

4. Denise

She's probably the least likely suspect out of this entire list, but the fact that she suggests there might be two Red Devil killers after viewers just learned themselves that very same fact sure seems fishy. Or, you know, she is just super smart and is going to crack this case wide open.

5. Wes

If Grace is that mysterious baby, then maybe Wes is getting revenge for the death of her mother. Also, the Red Devil just happens to start killing with a chain saw after Wes shows The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in class. Coincidence? Hmm... probably not. Oh, and there's the fact that he seems to be hiding something and is totally creepy at times.

Who is the Red Devil on Scream Queens?

Who is the Red Devil on Scream Queens?

6. Gigi

Just look at Gigi's face when Wes says he thinks Dean Munsch is the killer. Is that a smirk? It's almost like she seems happy about it and this was her plan all along. Or, you know, maybe she's just really annoyed with Dean Munsch and her awful white noise machine.

7. Pete

Not only did Chanel reveal Pete is seemingly a stalker, but he also had a Red Devil costume in his closet. He said he sometimes acts as the school's "mascot," but is anyone believing that?

8. Hester

She is obsessed with death, which is both terrifying and possibly a huge hint that she's one of the Red Devils.

Scream Queens airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on Fox.

Dwayne Johnson shows his soft side with post about his dog's death (PHOTOS)

After making the heartbreaking decision that pet owners are all too often faced with, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson posted a sweet tribute to announce the death of his dog, Brutus. Little Brutus suffered from poisoning after eating a mushroom in Johnson's yard and he and his longtime girlfriend, Lauren Hashian, were forced to end the pup's suffering by putting him down.

"Another reminder that we have to live and love as greatly as we can today, because tomorrow is never guaranteed," wrote Johnson. "At approximately 11:15pm last night myself and @laurenhashianofficial had to make the painful decision to end Brutus' suffering by taking him off life support and sending his soul to pup heaven. I held his lil' paw as he was finally at peace."

Johnson went on to clarify what happened to Brutus and warn fellow pet owners to be vigilant in checking the areas in which their dogs play for poisonous mushrooms so that others can avoid the same tragedy.

It's an especially sad ending for Brutus, who seemed to have no shortage of adventures in his short life.

Johnson posted an adorable photo of himself with Brutus and Hobbs over Labor Day weekend, telling the story of how he saved Brutus from nearly drowning the first day he was in the Johnson household.

"I set them both down and they both take off in a full sprint and fall right into the deep end of our pool," Johnson recalled. "HOBBS immediately starts doggy paddling while BRUTUS (like a brick) sinks head first to the bottom of the pool. I take off into a full sprint, fully clothed, dive in the pool, swim to the bottom, rescue my brick, I mean BRUTUS, and bring him back to the edge of the pool."

Then, just one week after his near-drowning experience, Brutus ended up back at the vet with some "north/south action," according to Johnson.

Childcare fees now rival private school tuition

The most expensive childcare centres in Brisbane include River City World of Learning in the inner city, which charges $125 per day for babies (discounted by $2 per day for five days), according to a report by The Courier Mail.

For full time care, this amounts to more than $30,000, minus the $7,500 government subsidy.

Meanwhile, Brisbane Grammar School, one of Brisbane’s most expensive and exclusive schools, charged $23,180 for year 12 tuition this year. Brisbane Girls Grammar School’s tuition was $21,700.

Of course, none of this is news to parents in Sydney, where childcare fees are routinely as high as $150 per day – in the suburbs as well as the inner city.

More: Government cracking down on child immunisation with new bill

Bianca, a financial planner based in Sydney, is currently navigating the childcare maze after having her first child earlier this year.

With over a decade of corporate experience, she negotiated six months’ of maternity leave with her employer and will soon return to work full-time, but her childcare options are exorbitant.

At $165 per day, in a childcare centre based in the CBD (where she lives and works), it will amount to a whopping $42,900 annually for childcare. Even once her $7,500 government entitlement is factored in, she’ll still need to find more than $35,000 annually in after-tax dollars to cover her childcare fees.

“It’s extraordinarily expensive, especially when this is for just one child!” she says. “I can’t imagine how much it would cost if we have another baby? In that case our only realistic option would be to hire a nanny for around $250 per day – or $65,000 a year.”

While Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane can command well above $100 per day, childcare centres in regional towns are generally much lower. Clearly, where you live has a huge impact on the amount you’ll pay in childcare fees.

For instance, Kids Academy at Spring Hill, Brisbane charges $115 per day, but it’s counterpart at Hope Island on the Gold Coast levies fees of between $80-$89 per child.

The average daily fee for long day care in WA is estimated to be about $85 (up to $150 in Perth), while more remote childcare facilities, in towns such as Gumeracha in South Australia, daily rates can be as low as $65.

The benchmark price that the Federal Government’s Productivity Commission uses for its funding model is between $72 and $74 per day, depending on the child’s age, which is substantially lower than the actual prices being paid for childcare in most Australian cities.

Proposed childcare reforms under former Prime Minister Tony Abbott may not go ahead and planned under Malcolm Turnball’s leadership, although Federal Education Minister Simon Birmingham said he was committed to implementing a new, almost $40 billion childcare package from July 1, 2017.

So in the meantime, what are parents to do?

  • Consider hiring a nanny
  • Share care with another family
  • Add an au pair to your family
  • If you work full-time, consider flex hours like working four longer days instead of five 8-hour days
  • Split the load with your partner

How to tell if your living room needs more seating

$
0
0

During a recent living room overhaul for Better Homes and Gardens, interior designer Elaine Griffin revealed a surprisingly simple (yet effective) formula for finding out the ideal number of chairs:

The number of chairs in your living room ≥ the number of chairs in your dining room

So you need to have at least as many seats in your living room as you have in your dining room. Sounds easy enough, right? After all, it's pretty logical. Should you host a dinner party, everyone will likely end up in the living room afterward for coffee and conversation. Naturally you'll want each of them to have a place to plant their body without anyone having to sit lotus style on your yoga mat.

Think about your lifestyle

Although Griffin's advice is a good rule of thumb, the ideal number is going to be different for everyone, depending on many different factors. Like, for starters, your lifestyle. In essence, the "right" formula for you might look a whole lot different from the "right" formula for someone else.

If you throw only one dinner party a year but spend nearly every night cuddled up with your family watching TV, it might not make sense for you to have eight seats. Or perhaps your tastes veer more toward minimalism — another reason you might not want to fill your living room with as much furniture.

Another major consideration is space. Sure, it'd be fantastic to have room for eight to 10 seats in your living area. But really, how many of us have a living space that would allow for that much furniture and the requisite 30-36 inches of walking space between said pieces without looking comically cluttered?

Option 1: Sofas

Image: Value City Furniture's Candice 3 Pc. Living Room with Accent Chair

If you need to maximize the amount of seating but don't have a ton of space or don't entertain a lot throughout the year, sofas are a smart way to fit in more seating without feeling like you are trying too hard. And despite the fact that they tend to get a bad rap in the interior design world, sectional sofas can be the perfect piece families with young kids (you know, at the sweet age when they still actually want to sit with you!).

At the very minimum, you should shoot for having at least four to five seats in your living room if space allows. In the typical home, this often looks like a sofa-and-two-club-chairs combo.

Then you can always build on that base arrangement with furniture appropriated from other areas — it won't hurt anyone's feelings if they sit in the same seat in your living room that they sat in whilst at the dining table.

Option 2: Multi-use furniture

Multifunctional furniture is another clever way to incorporate more seating. An ottoman that easily transitions from a coffee table to an impromptu place for guests to park it? Yes, please!

Image: Value City Furniture's Adele Ottoman

Nesting ottomans also work beautifully, as they don't take up too much space but can create several additional seats. Simply slide one or two beneath a console table, and pull them out on an as-needed basis.

Image: Value City Furniture's Tiffany 3 Pc. Storage Ottoman with Trays

And don't fret if your monthly book club ladies or some of the couples you host during game day parties have to squeeze in close or share a settee. If the furniture is comfy and the friendship is too, it doesn't matter if you have four seats or a million — your guests will have a good time.

Julia Gillard tells career women to rise above online haters

Our former Prime Minister has joined America's First Lady Michelle Obama and UN Messenger of Peace Charlize Theron to create a panel discussion about "The Power of an Educated Girl."

More: Michelle Obama's 62 Million Girls campaign

At the event, Gillard's was introduced as a "fierce" feminist, with the audience reminded of her now infamous misogyny speech that was directed to the then Opposition Leader Tony Abbott.

Her experience at the top, where she became the target of many "haters," led to her sharing some advice to the mostly-female audience about ignoring online bullies, according to The Daily Mail.

"We live in a world of instantaneous feedback and often it's instantaneous criticism. You don't have to be in a publicly exposed profession like politics to feel the sting of that," she said.

"Some of the poison that goes across social media after midnight, when people have had a drink or two, that stuff is not constructive criticism. Just forget about it, don't let it get into your head, don't let it get inside you, so build that sense of self."

However, the 54 year old wasn't done there. Glamour magazine, who hosted the event, also revealed that she discussed the importance of educating girls, particularly as part of her new role as the Chair of the Global Partnership for Education, an organisation dedicated to ensuring every child receives basic education particularly those in developing and conflict-affected areas.

"I know education has made my life. So, I'm passionate about ensuring every girl around the world has the same opportunities," said the former Labor leader.

"There is so much we need to do for the 62 million girls," the former PM said. "Your voices are very strong. Direct them to world leaders. What you should say to those leaders is that it costs, on average, $1.18 to educate a girl in a developing country in primary or secondary school each day. Developing countries are already financing this cost at 88 percent—which means that [they need] 14 cents for each of these girls each day. That's got to be doable."

However, if the importance of the night could be summed up in one phrase, this honor would have to go to the Hollywood star on the panel, Charlize Theron, who declared that "Education shouldn't be left up to the lottery of geography or gender."

Halloween doesn't have to be all candy, all the time

1. Give out non-food treats

One easy way to avoid doling out unhealthy snacks is to avoid food-based treats. Kids love keepsakes and treasures, so think stocking stuffer size. Check out party supply stores to find inexpensive trinkets.
• bouncy balls
• themed erasers or pencils
• coloring books
• print a Halloween picture for kids to color when they get home
• pennies or nickels
• stickers
• polished rocks or seashells

2. Hand out health Halloween snacks

For safety's sake, any snacks you hand out to kids need to be sealed and tamper-proof, so all of the following suggestions are available in individual packaging.

• pre-packaged single-serving bags of pretzels, cereal, crackers or trail mix
• microwave popcorn
• granola bars
• mini juice boxes (100 percent juice, of course)
• organic fruit cups or pre-packaged applesauce
• a packet of hot chocolate or hot apple cider mix
• string cheese
• organic fruit leather
• honey sticks (not for children under 2)

Pace the candy consumption

Your little pumpkin still managed to bring home a bag full of candy, but that doesn’t mean he needs to eat it all at once. Have him pick out an item or two, then store the rest away and limit how much he can have each day.

Even better, find a place where you and your child can donate some of the candy. At Halloween Candy Buyback, enter your zip code to find a participating dentist who will buy back your child's Halloween candy at a dollar a pound, and then send the candy to troops overseas.

4. Inspect the treats

Look through all of the items your child brings home from Halloween festivities. Scan through each item to be sure it is food-allergy friendly and has not been opened or tampered with.

5. Think "green Halloween"

You usually think of orange — not green — at this time of year. But many parents are looking for ways to participate in holiday traditions that keep the health of the environment in mind. Going green is as much about what you don't buy as what you buy, so opt for old pillow cases for trick-or-treating, recyclable decor and set up a costume swap with fellow parents.

Here's to a healthy Halloween!

Bill Cosby allegedly gave Kenan Thompson some disgusting advice (VIDEO)

The Saturday Night Live star, whose Cosby impressions were probably inspired by conversations like the one he describes in this story, told Seth Meyers that he always got a weird vibe from Cosby because of certain inappropriate things he would say while they filmed Fat Albert.

One anecdote is particularly disturbing in light of all the sexual assault allegations against the iconic comedian.

"There were little indicators of things that happened that you just go, 'Hmmm, that was a little different.'" Thompson told Meyers. "And one of them was this story that he told me where he was like 'You know, life is good in the movies but you just be ready because when this movie comes out you're gonna need two dicks because women are gonna be all over you.'

"I was just like, 'No. What? I'm sorry, Dr. Huxtable, what was that?'"

Meanwhile, three more women have come forward claiming Cosby assaulted them, including a retired chauffeur, a former jazz club waitress and former Miss America Lisa Christie, who admonished Cosby for using his image as a kindly dad to gain the trust of unsuspecting women.

"Shame on you, Mr. Father Figure of America," she said during a press conference with attorney Gloria Allred Wednesday.

Allred added, "Although it is too late for these three new accusers to take any legal action against Mr. Cosby because of the statute of limitations, these three courageous women want Mr. Cosby to be accountable for what they say was his misconduct towards them.”

Cosby has not commented on Thompson’s story or the new allegations.

Silky olive oil cake is the simple dessert you haven't tried yet

But I'm always intimidated by them. I feel as though cakes have a mind of their own; and, if it had a real face, there would be a constant smirk on it.

I think that if a cake could talk, it would tell you to go away and leave her alone. She would tell you that she is too pretty and too good for you to even try making her. Anyone else feel this way about cakes?

For that reason, when it comes down to baking a cake, I just go with something that sounds simple and delicious, but the really delicious part comes only when I add an awesome frosting to it. That stuff can always disguise a questionable food. Luckily for us, this olive oil cake and vanilla cream cheese frosting turned out to be amazing.

If I had to sum it up in a few words, it would be: silky, moist, sweet. A friend of coffee, tea or milk.

P.S. I had it for breakfast and loved it even more.

Olive oil cake with vanilla cream cheese frosting recipe

Serves 12 to 14

Prep time: 20 minutes | Cook time: 1 hour | Total time: 1 hour 20 minutes + cooling time

Ingredients:

For the cake

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1-3/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil (choose one that is very light in color)
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2/3 cup heavy cream

For the vanilla cream cheese frosting

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened (I use 1/3 less fat cream cheese)
  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup milk (you may need less or more)
  • Walnuts, halved, optional

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Prepare a bundt pan by greasing it with cooking spray and dusting with flour; shake off any excess and set aside.
  3. In your mixer's bowl, combine eggs and sugar; beat at medium speed for 3 minutes or until pale yellow.
  4. Slowly pour in the olive oil; continue to mix until thoroughly combined.
  5. Add vanilla.
  6. With the mixer on low speed, alternately add flour and heavy cream, 1/3 of each at a time, beginning and ending with the flour.
  7. Pour cake batter into previously prepared bundt pan.
  8. Bake for 45 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Remove cake from the oven and let stand at room temperature for 10 minutes.
  10. Invert cake on a cooling rack and let completely cool before adding the frosting.
  11. In the meantime, prepare the vanilla cream cheese frosting.
  12. In your mixer's bowl, combine the cream cheese and butter; beat at medium speed until completely smooth.
  13. Add powdered sugar and continue to mix until thoroughly combined.
  14. Mix in the vanilla.
  15. Add milk, about a tablespoon at a time, beating the mixture until it is smooth and just thin enough to pour. The frosting should be very thick, but thin enough to be able to pour it over the cake.
  16. Slowly pour the frosting over the cooled cake.
  17. Add halved walnuts over the frosting.
  18. Cut and serve.

8 Essential types of fall footwear you need in your closet

$

From retro thigh-high boots to classic Oxfords, you'll discover modern updates to shoe styles that have stood the test of time. Check out the following types of footwear to find out which ones to add to your shoe closet before the weather turns brisk.

1. Thigh-high boots

thigh-high-boots

Whether you call these beauties thigh-high or over-the-knee makes little difference at all. Boots that travel to unprecedented heights are gorgeous, warm and can draw attention to the shapeliness of your legs. We especially love the trend in jewel-toned suede for an update to a neutral black or brown boot. (Nordstrom, $199)

2. Ankle booties

ankle-booties

Booties are surprisingly versatile for the highs and lows of fall weather. You can wear a casual pair with boyfriend jeans or even shorts, or channel some glam with a studded or metallic pair for a night out on the town. Of all the boots you can invest in, booties are the easiest to wear, with trendy details like fringe, studs and even patchwork. (Free People, $128)

3. Mary Janes

mary-jane

The classic Mary Jane has come out of hiding this year — and we couldn't be happier. You can wear the Mary Jane trend in a classic black flat or go a little wild with a heel or bold color. (Zappos, $109)

4. Loafers

loafers

Menswear-inspired loafers have popped up all over the fashion world — and they look particularly good with straight leg jeans or trousers. If the style leaves you longing for a touch more femininity, select a colorful pair with clean and narrow lines, rather than the chunkier versions that are also available. (Urban Outfitters, $59)

5. Brogues and Oxfords

brogues-and-oxfords

Similar to menswear-inspired loafers, brogues and Oxfords have also made a splash of late. The difference is that brogues and Oxfords look a little more like a man's wingtip shoe and often contain laces and cut-out detailing. Wear them with a sweet little A-line skirt for a sporty mix of masculine and feminine. (DSW, $110)

6. Mules

mules

Yes, any shoe that's called a "mule" doesn't sound particularly sexy, but they totally are. Mules look great with work trousers or an evening dress, so they're versatile for any weather or event that autumn presents to you. If you feel bored by a mule, find a pair with a high and slim heel. (6pm, $88)

7. Mid-calf boots

mid-calf-boot

The mid-calf boot looks simply divine with a bohemian tunic or a casual A-line skirt. We love slouchy styles in both suede and leather because they are wonderfully comfortable and casual. If you dare to try a cowboy-style boot or one with fringe, definitely give it a go with the mid-calf. (Steve Madden, $70)

8. T-strap heels

t-strap-heel

When in doubt, squeeze your beautiful feet into a pair of strappy heels and watch what happens. A strappy heel never really goes out of style, but you can give the look a subtle update by opting into a T-strap version. We love the way the T-strap highlights the slenderness of the ankle. It's the little things, folks. (Anthropologie, $138)

'Pumpkin spice season' is loathsome, and I can't wait for fall to end

$
0
0

The pumpkin spice mania needs to end.

It was bad enough when Starbucks started this nonsense with the pumpkin spice latte. A whole, large subsection of this country went berserk over it. In subsequent years, they began counting down the days until the annual “fall” (now typically happening BEFORE it’s actually fall) release of the sugary-sweet concoction that contains some form of pleasure receptor stimulators for the brains of many of my fellow humans. I finally gave in, after a few years of hype, and tried one — and well, it’s just not for me.

More: Dear Starbucks, pumpkin spice lattes do not belong in August

But really, I felt that if people wanted to drink that kind of thing, it’s not like I really cared, or deserved an opinion on the matter. I saw people happily posting pics of their hallowed cups on Facebook and Instagram (#PSL, natch) and clearly they were happy. So what the heck, no problem.

The hype around the pumpkin spice latte continued to grow, and other companies wanted to cash in on the pumpkin spice love. The first product extensions didn’t seem too bad: waffles, pancakes, muffins, that kind of thing. And again, no big deal: No one was forcing me to eat any of them, and using pumpkin spice in these types of products didn’t seem outrageous.

For some inexplicable reason, however, the list of products being pumpkin spiced just keeps growing and growing. You can now find yogurt, almonds, cereal, granola bars, gelato, English muffins, bagels, cream cheese. I wonder, do people put pumpkin spice cream cheese on their pumpkin spice bagels while sipping their pumpkin spice lattes in front of a lit pumpkin spice Yankee Candle?

And while I’m listing things out, beware the beverage aisle: Tea, soda, beer and vodka have all fallen victim. (Nooo! Not the alcohol! This is insidious!)

They also messed with treats from my childhood that really didn’t need any embellishment: M&Ms and Oreos, complete with shocking orange filling, have been tainted. Last fall, I took what I thought was a caramel Hershey’s Kiss and popped it in my mouth… only to feel like a toddler with the desire to spit that chocolate/potpourri mash-up right back out of my mouth. (True story: I actually did. See what pumpkin spice does to a girl?)

Pumpkin spice has even come for the Peeps. And I know that Peeps are pretty polarizing. I happen to like them, and I know that grosses some people out. But even I’m out on the pumpkin spice ones. Shudder.

More: 10 Pumpkin spice foods that have no excuse for existing

The only rules about pumpkin spice mania are that there are no rules. Tortilla chips. Potato chips. Kale Chips. No really. Pumpkin spice kale chips. Let that sink in a minute. It’s like the product development people are just trying to see how ridiculously far they can take the latest "it" trends. Pumpkin spice is the new black, and no one is stopping until they’ve conquered it all.

Think I’m wrong? People on Etsy have created an all-natural pumpkin spice vegan deodorant. I love Etsy and I think crafty people are amazing. But this? What’s the expression I’m looking for? Oh yeah: I. Can’t. Even.

I feel like we are living in a remake of a classic movie, updated for 2015. Soylent Green is pumpkin, people. Good luck with that.

Don't let your flu shot cause a permanent injury

$
0
0

You may not know about the small chance your flu vaccine could be injected improperly, which can result in a condition known as shoulder injury related to vaccine administration (SIRVA). This condition is defined as persistent shoulder pain and dysfunction, starting within 24 hours of vaccine administration, with limited range of motion and pain for a prolonged period.

It's caused when the vaccine is injected too high up, into the soft tissue of the shoulder joint instead of into the thick part of the deltoid muscle, causing inflammation and bursitis. For some, SIRVA can last for months, but for others, it can be a chronic issue causing reduced or total loss of function in the shoulder.

As of 2010, SIRVA is recognized as a known type of vaccine injury by the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the Centers for Disease Control and the Institute of Medicine. This led to the creation of new vaccine recommendations that "the upper third of the deltoid muscle should not be used for vaccine injections, and the diagnosis of vaccination-related shoulder dysfunction should be considered in patients presenting with shoulder pain following a vaccination."

I developed SIRVA after receiving a flu shot at a retail pharmacy in early 2014, and I have endured X-rays, an MRI, physical therapy and several steroid shots in my shoulder to reduce the inflammation and pain. Surgery will be my next step, once the most-recent steroid injection wears off. SIRVA is painful, it can limit your daily routine and it's frustrating to have an injury caused by something as simple as a flu shot.

SIRVA is something no one should have to go through, so here are a few tips I've learned about how to reduce your risks when receiving a flu shot — or any other vaccine injection.

1. If the needle position seems too high, say something

A shot should be given at least two finger widths down from your acromion process (the knobby end of your shoulder). Not sure how to bring it up? Try this when the alcohol pad is rubbed on the spot, "Wait. That seems really high on my arm. I don't remember getting any other shots that high. Can you position it lower down?"

2. Ask if you can stand while the shot is given.

If you're required to sit, ask the vaccine administrator to sit as well, so you're both at the same level. The person administering the vaccine should be seated if the patient is seated to reduce error. Injecting from above tends to result in the injection being given higher on the deltoid, which increases your risks.

3. For the flu shot, ask if you're eligible for Flumist.

The Flumist version of the vaccine is sprayed into your nose — no needles! Not everyone is a good candidate for this version of the vaccine, since it's a live vaccine. If you're eligible, you'll prevent any needle injury by avoiding the poke altogether.

4. Consider who administers your shot.

Pharmacies are convenient for flu shots, but how much experience does your pharmacist have with shots? Many pharmacists have a short training on giving injections, but may not give them regularly depending on the demand in their area. On the other hand, you may know your pharmacist better than your doctor's office nurse. Ideally, you want someone who has a good amount of experience giving shots and who gives them with some regularity.

However, sometimes, you get a bad shot, no matter the person giving it. I've had flu shots at pharmacies, student nurse clinics and doctor's offices without any issue, but nearly any medical professional has a risk of giving a bad shot. That's why it's important to pay attention and ask questions if something seems wrong, even if the professional is someone you trust.

This advice isn't meant to warn you away from receiving vaccinations. I do think it's vital to consider each injection as a careful medical procedure. Any medical procedure has the ability to help, but most also have the ability to harm if done improperly. Be cautious in who you choose to give an injection, and don't feel dumb or bossy about speaking up and asking questions if you're uncertain. It's your health.

How to get prepared before your adopted baby comes home

$

But as an adoption consultant, I also see many cases of adoptive parents getting a call about a baby that was already born or is due imminently. So, it's never too early for adoptive parents to start preparing their home. Here is my checklist of items that you should prepare so you and your baby are ready to step into your new life together.

Prepare the nursery

Everyone knows about this one! Get the nursery ready. For the fun decor, consider incorporating your baby's adoption history. For instance, you can frame your paperwork or the profile from which the birth mother selected you. If you have a close enough relationship with the birth mother, you can add a photo of her.

Outside of the decor, you also need to have the essentials set up in the nursery to be ready for the baby. You will need a crib and, if you'd like, a rocking chair. You will also need a changing table with all the changing supplies, and you’ll need baby clothes, bibs and burp cloths washed and ready to be used.

Decide where the baby will sleep

Your baby may not be sleeping in the crib for the first few days or weeks. Parents often want their new baby closer for wake-ups in the middle of the night. You will have to decide if you want the baby to sleep in his own room or in your bedroom in a bassinet or a playpen. If you'll be traveling for your adoption, you may need one plan for while you’re in a hotel and another plan for after you return home.

Purchase baby and household supplies

The baby will need a lot of items, and you will want to stock up on them so you are not constantly running to the store with a new baby. Consider having a stash of common baby items:

  • Diapers
  • Wipes
  • Diaper rash cream
  • Baby shampoo
  • Baby lotion
  • Baby Tylenol
  • Laundry detergent for sensitive skin
  • Coffee! (obviously for you, not the baby!)

Choose a pediatrician

You will want a pediatrician selected and ready to go when your baby is placed with you. As a new parent, you may have many worries that can be answered by someone at your pediatrician's office — even if you call a few times a week! Ask your friends for recommendations for a great pediatrician and get an appointment set up to meet the doctor and explain your adoption background. It’s often best to select a pediatrician who is familiar with adoption and whose office is 'adoption friendly.' Don’t be shy about interviewing several offices and office staff members and asking them these questions directly.

Clean and baby-proof the house

Trust me, your house will never be the same kind of clean after your baby arrives. Try to keep it clean before baby comes, so you can focus entirely on your new baby instead of the dust on the end tables. Not only should you perform your routine cleaning, but think about shampooing your carpets, cleaning on and under the furniture and changing your furnace filter.

The house will also have to be baby-proofed. Make sure all low cabinets have safety latches and all hard corners have rubber grips to protect from head bumps. You will also want a baby gate for the top and bottom of all staircases.

Get a car seat and diaper bag

When you travel to the hospital to pick up your new bundle of joy, you will need to have a car seat ready to carry the baby out and take him or her home with you. You will also need to choose a diaper bag and have it packed with all the essentials, including:

  • Bottles
  • Formula
  • Bibs
  • Burp cloths
  • Extra clothes
  • Diapers
  • Wipes
  • Changing mat

There is a lot to prepare for, but these essentials will help you start out your life as new parents on the right foot!

Try this trick to book a European vacation without all the hassle

$

I'm not suggesting you take an escorted tour on a bus with 30 other people. You can do that, if you want to be led around to the most touristy places, and you're afraid of venturing out on your own. If that's how you like to travel, then by all means, but you won't have too much freedom to explore on your own. Many of these companies are going to take you to spots that give them a commission for bringing travelers there.

If you like to explore more independently and make your own schedule, I would advise buying a vacation package from a company that groups together airfare, hotel and rental car or train transportation. This allows you to focus on what you're going to see and do. Let's face it, you are not going to be spending all day in your hotel room. You are going to be out and about seeing the sights, eating in cafes and wandering museums and shops.

Of course, you want a clean place to sleep in a good neighborhood, but you don't really need to waste your time researching where those hotels are. The same goes for the airfare. In reality, you are probably not going to find the best deals by shopping around on your own. Tour wholesalers buy in bulk, and they have better negotiated rates with airlines and hotels than you could ever find. In most cases, you are not going to beat their deals.

What to research before you book a vacation package

  • Check out which hotel your company is using, and read about it on TripAdvisor. Are people complaining that it is old and outdated and dirty, or are they saying it is well located, with good service? If the reviews are mostly positive, you are good to go.
  • Ask the tour company if they are going to use nonstop flights. Some people don't mind changing planes, but if an eight-hour trip is going to take you 14 hours instead, you need to weigh the value of the time lost.
  • See if the tour company is a member of USTOA (United States Tour Operator Association). If the company goes bankrupt, at least you have some protection for your money spent, as USTOA has a $1 million traveler's assistance program. If you want to double insure your hard-earned travel dollar, buy trip insurance, which will cover if you get sick and can't make your trip.
  • Be very sure about your travel dates and details before you book with a tour operator. If you start changing your arrangements and plans, the change fees can add up, taking your trip from affordable to too expensive. Oftentimes, these fees are assessed by the airline for changes, not just by the tour company.
  • Another great hack is to check LivingSocial, Groupon and TravelZoo to see if they have any special deals for the destination you want to visit. In order to take advantage of those special flash sales, you need to buy the trip exactly as it is offered. If you want to make any changes, those additional fees will add up.

If you are going to Europe to visit family or have been to the country before, you might want a more relaxed visit. If you want to spend more time in your hotel and want to be in a particular area, you may be better off booking everything independently. This is particularly true if you are using your airline mileage for free flights. But if you're paying your way and you want to see a particular place at an affordable price, a tour wholesaler or vacation packager is definitely the way to go.

3 super-powerful time management tips for when life is just too much

The bad news: There will always be more to do than you’ll have time for.

The good news: You can’t manage time, but you can manage yourself.

Repeat after me: "I will never get everything done!"

Nor should you want to! Some things are simply not worth doing, Once you can accept this, it's extremely liberating.

This is not about controlling time so you can race around madly and get everything done. Prioritizing the important things gives you peace of mind, so that the stuff left undone won't have a massive impact on your life. This is about you, your habits and your attitude.

3 sanity-saving time management tips

1. Use a to-do list

It’s amazing how many people don’t. As new things pop up, add them to your list.

Two powerful tweaks for getting the most out of your to-do list:

  • Focus on what’s important, not what’s urgent. Don’t just make a long list of everything you need to do. Instead, draw an Eisenhower Grid with four quadrants and two axes: "important" and "urgent." The important and urgent things need to be done first. The secret is to do the things in the "important and not urgent" quadrant. Usually, people spend a lot of time on the "urgent but not important" tasks. They feel a sense of failure and frustration, because they're not moving forward. Not you!
  • Always number the first three items on which you should focus, to avoid getting sidetracked.

2. Know your priorities

Do an 80/20 analysis on the things keeping you so busy. The 80/20 rule states that 80 percent of your results come from just 20 percent of the tasks you do. Which tasks really make a difference? Which ones are just time wasters? This will help you decide what deserves to make it into the "important" quadrant of your to-do list.

3. Create your ideal week

If you’re constantly struggling to get to the gym, see your friends or keep on top of your business, it’s probably because you’re flitting from one thing to the next. It’s OK — don’t be too hard on yourself. We all tend to panic when we get overwhelmed.

To avoid this happening, create a calendar of your ideal week. This is your ideal average week, so please don’t just create one where you spend all week sitting on a beach and drinking cocktails!

  • Get a large pinboard. Draw a week’s calendar and segment each day into three-hour blocks. Add time for breaks. Time out will make on time more productive.
  • Use a color-coding system to denote what you'll do in each three-hour block. Use one color for exercise and down time, another for family time, etc. Where appropriate, split up your work time into categories, such as business planning and client appointments.
  • Make sure your week looks balanced and allows enough time for all the important things.

You can now relax, knowing there are enough hours in the week. When things crop up, swap the bits of paper on your board around to ensure the other important parts of your life still get attention.

Spend some time looking over your board at the start of each week. You will feel like the master of time — your time!

Now you have three simple (but super-powerful) sanity-saving time management tips. Practice using them, and you will never look back.

Empire: Ludacris puts Chris Rock's cameo to shame, while a Dynasty is born

Dare I say, Empire managed to best itself. As a fan of the show, I can say with all certainty that I much preferred tonight's episode to last week's premiere. While some of the reasons tonight's episode was strong are obvious (*cough* Cookie!), the show managed to pull a few new tricks out of its bag, too.

To recap, the premiere last week started off with a #FreeLucious concert that mimicked the real-life rallies held by the Black Lives Matter movement. While that ruffled some feathers, fans did enjoy getting a glimpse of how Lucious was adjusting to life behind bars — and how the rest of the family's coup backfired. It was a strong showing, for sure.

But I still think tonight's episode stole its thunder. Here's how.

Cookie

In news that surprises no one, Taraji P. Henson can do no wrong, y'all. From Cookie's fashion to those barbs she was slinging in every direction (the ones aimed at Boo Boo Kitty were particularly classic), the matriarch of the Lyon family was in true Cookie Monster form. And, seriously, can we just talk for a minute about how Empire's Twitter emoji tonight is a cookie in a fedora? Be still, my heart.

Empire Week 2 - Cookie

Empire Week 2 - Cookie

And I am loving the idea of Cookie creating her own "Dynasty." After all, this chick was the driving force behind Empire and never got her dues. It's her time!

The cameos

No disrespect to Chris Rock, who I think is hilarious, but tonight's cameos made the comedian's role, uh, kind of the laughing stock of the prison yard. Exhibit A: Valentina. Played by Becky G, this feisty diva auditions for Hakeem's budding girl group, only to tell him, "With or without you, I shine," upon realizing she wasn't going to land a solo recording contract.

Empire Week 2 Becky G

Empire Week 2 Becky G

Or, my personal favorite (on the show and, you know, in life), Luda! Sure, his character was, for lack of a better word, a total dillhole. Or is? It's hard to tell his fate after being jumped by a henchman hired by Lucious' new lawyer — played by the fantastic Andre Royo, another guest start to add to the list of tonight's top-notch cameos.

Empire Week 2 Cameo

Empire Week 2 Cameo

The music

Don't get me wrong — the premiere's concert was cool and all. Real talk, though: A huge part of the reason the audience fell for this show in the first place was the Lyon family. And tonight, we were treated to insane performances by Jamal and Lucious.

Empire Week 2 Music

Empire Week 2 Music

We would have loved to see Hakeem, but he's focusing on forming the next Destiny's Child. To that end, though, we got to enjoy stellar stylings by Valentina (Becky G) and Tiana (Serayah McNeill).

Empire Week 2 Tiana

Empire Week 2 Tiana

We were even treated to snippets of a song from "V" (Veronika Bozeman) and Kelly Rowland as a young Lucious' mom who — in an interesting twist — seems to share Andre's bipolar disorder. Basically, I'd happily buy every track from tonight's episode and impatiently wait for more next week.

The depth

One of the most pleasant surprises of the night was also a brilliant strategic move on Empire's part — adding depth to existing characters. In the show's first season, fans fell fast and hard for Lucious, Cookie, Jamal and Hakeem. We only really got to see the kind of intensity eldest son Andre (played by Trai Byers) and his wife Rhonda (played by Kaitlin Doubleday) were capable of. So seeing them move closer to the forefront tonight really rounded out an already rich cast. And other fans were feelin' the shift, too.

Hungry for Abi

Jeff, one of her Ta Keo tribemates, summed up her strange attitude the best by labeling her "the Brazilian soap opera." He viewed her as the dream choice to bring all the way to the end of the game.

"I see Abi as somebody everybody hates, which makes her somebody that I know I can beat," Jeff said. "She is the perfect tool to help me win $1 million. Oh, my God, this is delicious! Who needs food when you have Abi?"

But her evil-like stare washed away when those she felt aligned with were laughing at her. Terry felt sorry for her, so he went and had a bonding moment with the Brazilian baddie. The next morning, Jeff told her that he didn't want her to go anywhere because he thinks she's "fabulous." No, Jeff. You think she's your golden ticket. Smart dude.

Tension-filled Tribal Council

Ta Keo went to their second Tribal Council in a row after a crazy close immunity challenge. Once back at camp, Abi straight out told Shirin that the tribe was gunning for her and Spencer. Shirin was devastated that she went from being in the majority alliance to the minority. After trying to make a play on Woo, who wasn't, well, wooed, the stage was set for a Spencer/Shirin showdown at Tribal Council.

Although neither wanted to vote against the other since they were strongly aligned, Spencer and Shirin did just that in an effort to spare themselves. In a tension-filled, stressful tally of the votes, Spencer was spared by a slim margin as Shirin was snuffed out of the game.

Car seat safety: Has anyone borrowed your car lately?

$

We were rear-ended when he was two. The paramedic who checked him over said he was even safer than we were, because of his car seat. I felt so proud! I was the awesome mama taking care of her baby the right way! I was endorsed by professionals!

But one day, after someone had borrowed a car my son rode in daily, I got in next to him and realized the top belt wasn't secured — at all. Only the lap belt was attached. He'd been riding around in that seat all afternoon!

A couple of years later, he was getting into that car on the driver's side and everything looked normal from that side. An adult went around to the passenger side to put in a bag of toys — and found a huge mess. The car-borrower apparently took the seat out and couldn't figure out how to reinstall it, so they faked it. If no one had gone around to the passenger side, we might not have known for days.

Should I have learned my lesson from the first incident? Absolutely. I consider that second incident one of my lowest parenting moments. We are beyond lucky nothing happened to my son as a result of my carelessness.

In both cases, we weren't told that the car seat had been removed while the car was out of our control. I don't think the folks who did it were malicious, but they were irresponsible. So I'm telling you what I wish I had known: even if you don't know the car seat was moved, recheck it! Every time. No matter who borrowed your car or how much you trust them.

Movie Review for Parents: Hotel Transylvania 2

I still see myself as Angela from 'My So-Called Life,' but I guess I'm her mom now

$
0
0

That one line from My So-Called Life left me reeling. During a recent late-night binge of one of my all-time favorite shows, I realized I am almost the same age as the teen lead character’s mom.

I could be Angela Chase’s mom, not Angela Chase anymore! How did this happen?

I can totally recall empathizing with Claire Dane’s melodramatic response, "This life has been a test. If this had been an actual life, you would have received instructions on where to go and what to do."

Her words could have been my anthem, like it was for so many other '90s teens. Part of the reason I enjoyed the show was the similarities it had with my own tumultuous, monumental teen years. I clearly and fondly remember being a hormonal, teenage girl, just like Angela. Now, like all the girls who crushed heavily on Jordan Catalano, I am all grown up.

The more I viewed this classic show, the more overjoyed I felt that I no longer have to deal with all my former teen drama.

Why (almost) 40 is better than 16

I stopped chasing after the bad boy.

I am mostly happily married with kids. I no longer crush on the bad boy of the month. He broke my heart over and over, but it took me time to learn I could live without him. He never would have been in it for the long haul. Ultimately I gave the good guy — my now husband — a real chance. and I couldn’t be more elated that I did. My husband is not only in it for the long term, but he's my friend, my lover, the father to my kids and more.

I stopped being so insecure.

It might have taken time, but I am secure in my own skin. I don’t constantly worry what my friends or those in the once-popular crowd think of my every move. In my youth, I wouldn’t have had the guts to be a free thinker or to walk away from a high-paying job to become a stay-at-home-mom. I would have feared what others would have thought of my decision. I am overjoyed I had the confidence to listen to my heart and make priceless memories with my kids instead of worrying about what other people would have suggested I do.

I stopped being scared to speak up.

I have finally mastered the ability to speak my mind without fear of saying something that could be mocked. Don’t get me wrong, I think before I speak so I don't say something hurtful I am not be able to take back. I have a voice, though, and won’t let it get stifled. Whether I'm standing up for my own beliefs, supporting my husband or being my kids’ advocates, I have experienced enough in my years to open my mouth and let my words be heard.

I stopped obsessing about my looks.

I once spent hours on end consumed as to what in my closet would make me look pretty or skinny enough. I worried about how my hair or makeup looked for that hottie in my algebra class and wouldn’t dare leave the house without looking my best. Now I have been known to walk my girls to the bus stop in the sweats I wore to bed the last night, with slippers, bedhead and no makeup. Years of self-doubt had to be squashed in my inner psyche to get to this point of self-contentment.

I stopped wishing today away.

I don't constantly worry about the future, because I want to stop and enjoy the roses. As a teen and in my early twenties, I kept thinking, “If only I was older.” or “If only it were next week, next month, next year, then... ” I now know the years go by too quickly all on their own without me wishing them away, so I want to enjoy the present with my husband and kids.

Still, as Brian Krakow put it in his now-infamous love letter to Angela, “The whole truth is so much more than” I could even begin to crack the surface to share here, but this is my own so-called life, and I love it.
