My biracial daughter's going to a school where few kids look like her

Growing up, there were several years in elementary school where I was the only little black girl in my class. At that age, I was living blissfully in ignorance, only noticing when someone brought that fact to my attention. Oh, and they did. It wasn’t until my teenage years and into adulthood that I realized some of the implications of this.

More: 9 Terrifying thoughts every mom has on 'meet the teacher' night

Now having two children of my own and a daughter who just started kindergarten, I couldn’t help but scan the class for diversity during meet-the-teacher night. While our area has a heavy Hispanic and white community, the black population is quite small. It was a similar situation when I was growing up. In kindergarten, a little girl called me a brownie and said I was ugly because of my brown skin. A few years later, the topic of slavery made for some awkward looks in history class.

I can't help but worry my daughter may encounter some of the same, and I want her to be better prepared for those experiences than I was. My parents seemed to avoid talking to us about race growing up, but I want to embrace it with our children. I plan to teach her about our history and diversity in books.

But this doesn't change the make-up of her school.

After the second day of school, my little girl surprised me with a story about playing teacher for her class.

“I got to teach the car riders while our teacher helped the bus riders,” she told me.

“What did you teach them?” I asked.

“I said that my skin doesn’t burn as easily in the sun because I have brown skin.” I stifled a laugh.

More: Why I told my sons about their white privilege

“Were you the only one with brown skin?” I asked her, since she had brought it up.

“Yes… Well, actually no,” she said. “One of my other friends has skin like me.”

Her self-identification has varied over the last couple of years. When she was 3, she asked why my skin was brown. Then earlier this year, she described herself as being “a little bit like everyone.”

I’m so proud of my little girl and how far she’s come. I pray as she begins this new chapter that she’ll be brave and stand up for herself. That she’ll stand up for others who aren’t able to stand up for themselves.

I pray that she’ll continue to see the good in everyone and that any negativity around her won’t darken her spirit.

That she’ll be confident and love herself.

That she’ll learn to love learning and continue to devour new information.

I pray that she'll stand out not because of the way she looks, but because of her brilliance.

And I have a prayer for me too: I pray that I'll continue to find ways to teach her about the world, to appreciate the differences in others and learn to love people from all walks of life.

UnREAL Actress Ashley Scott's unusual baby name is a labor of love

Their baby was 4-days old before Ashley and Steve finalized her name: Iyla Vue (pronounced I love you). The name was Steve's idea, and it took Ashley those four days to decide that it was a perfect fit.

"I said, 'It's either the greatest name ever or the absolute worst," Scott told People. "I just love it." Now, every time the happy mom says "I love you" to someone, she'll think of her sweet baby girl.

Scott admits that not everyone is enchanted by the unusual moniker, but that doesn't matter to the happy mama. "She's delicate," gushes Scott. "Iyla reminds me of lace for some reason, the eyelet lace. She's just very delicate and quiet and sweet and precious."

More: Virtue baby names — from Faith to Justice

We've come to expect the unexpected with celebrity baby names, and Iyla Vue doesn't disappoint. But, isn't it maybe just a little unfair to saddle a child with this clever play on words? "Iyla," by itself, has a romantic quality about it... adding Vue as a middle name seems to make it less charming and more comic.

Not to mention, every mom says "I love you" to their baby ... but most of us don't bash them over the heads by putting it on their birth certificate.

In all fairness, Ashley's baby name choice is not nearly as outrageous as some of the celebrity names we've seen. Just last month, rapper Chief Keef named his son Sno FilmOn Dot Com Cozar, in a shameless attempt to promote an album. And chef Jamie Oliver has an entire brood of not-so-great baby names: Poppy Honey Rosie, Daisy Boo Pamela, Petal Blossom Rainbow and Buddy Bear Maurice!

More: Avoid baby names your child will grow to hate

A baby grows up, and it's important she have a name that will serve her well throughout life. While Iyla Vue is beyond precious for a 5-week-old baby girl, how will it fare on a college resume or job application? Giving a child a name that is too cute may, in the long run, turn out to be burdensome.

There's no doubt that Ashley and Steve (and big sister Ada!) are bursting with love for their new addition, and giving her a name that expresses their joy is such a sweet gesture. Let's hope the world can get on board with "Iyla Vue" and give it the respect that every person's name deserves.

Why we’re better off with Turnbull as Prime Minister

More: Tony Abbott is no longer Prime Minster, and the internet is saying goodbye

It's not that Malcolm Turnbull is a brilliant leader who's guaranteed to propel Australia into a secure and prosperous future; he may not even survive the next election. However, as far as the Liberal party is concerned, he is sensible, relatively ideologically steadfast and far more moderate and in-line with the Australian electorate than Abbott ever was.

As far as super villains go, Abbott was brilliant — under his charge, the government demolished climate policy, slandered the renewable energy industry, attacked health, education, the disabled, the homeless and unemployed youth, violated human rights, blocked marriage equality and tried to silence the media. However, what Australia needed was not a villainous and arrogant ruler who sat on a throne and ordered decapitations, but progressive and collaborative leadership. And that is still what the country needs.

Will Turnbull deliver?

It's hard to say whether Turnbull is capable of righting the wrongs, ending the dissidence within his own party and moving forward with a clear and progressive vision. This is perhaps a touch unrealistic. However, from the past, we know that he has demonstrated himself to be among the most socially progressive ministers within the ranks of the conservative party and has supported climate policy and marriage equality — two divisive and important issues facing Australia.

More: 6 Reasons I'm ashamed of my government

What is clear, is that where Tony Abbott stubbornly ploughed through those who opposed his beliefs — with little regard for evidence, facts, economic viability or humanity — unaffected by persistently and catastrophically low polls, Turnbull at least offers a glimmer of hope. Even if he does not deliver new policy, he is also unlikely to do any more damage. Perhaps a touch cynical, but true nonetheless.

What to expect

The drama will surely continue. How Abbott will take his demise and what impact the reshuffling of the cabinet will have remains to be seen. The win was hardly a landslide (54-44 votes), which means that the party will remain divided and will have to be managed.

How Turnbull approaches policy will also be interesting. For now he's stated that he'll tow the party line on climate policy, however whether he said it in earnest or to secure the votes of more conservative-leaning members remains to be seen. He did promise to engage with experts and educate and inform the public when making policy decisions, which seems to at least hint at a desire to reengage with a more proactive stance on global warming.

One issue that is likely to see the light of day is that of marriage equality. According to opinion polls, the majority of the electorate is in support and if Turnbull manages to pass a fairer policy that includes all Australians, then his leadership — no matter how short or turbulent — will have been a good thing for the country.

The challenges

Turnbull is not without his challenges. Not only did he suffer from low opinion polls during his time as the leader of the opposition party, but was ousted to a large degree due to his support of climate policy. During his time at the helm, he was also perceived as being arrogant and out of touch.

It will be interesting to see, then, whether his approach to leadership will have changed as a result of his past and whether he'll tread more carefully. How he'll manage and be affected by Abbott's supporters and the more conservative members of his party is another question. Strong opposition and leaks from within the party could prove to be an obstacle too big to overcome and render Turnbull merely a new face on an old party.

Still, I can't help but think that even the lack of action by Turnbull will be better than the latest scheme, policy or gaffe spouted by Abbott and if Turnbull does live up to his promises, this dramatic story may yet see a happy ending.

More: #FacesOfProstitution selfies challenge the public perception of sex work

The woman, who goes by the user name Lyfet, made an "ask me anything" post, in which people asked her some interesting questions (that many of us may have wondered about prostitution at some point). Below are 12 honest truths from the post.

1. She earns between $80 and $1000 in a week

Answering the question about how much money she earns in a year, Lyfet revealed that she has not worked a year in the industry yet, but she did have a projected figure.

Classic roasted chicken gets a delicious makeover with oranges and fennel

Chicken is probably the most cooked meat, especially for families with kids. It's easy to cook, and it can go with so many other ingredients. We all know we can roast our chickens with potatoes, but sometimes it is good to get out of that comfort zone and experiment with diverse flavors.

Citrus and chicken make a very good combination, and one that you can expect to taste in my kitchen. This time, I also added a bit of sweetness from a vegetable we often overlook: fennel. Fennel is an incredible bulb that is great to eat raw, baked or sautéed. When cooked, it slowly releases its natural sweet juice (and I am telling you, it's delicious).

Imagine the incredible flavors that come together in this dish. Oranges, fennel, olives and a simple addition of oregano give this classic roast chicken a huge boost.

New reports state Heather Thomson quit RHONY to save her marriage

$

According to a source close to the reality star, Thomson and her husband, Jonathan Schindler, have been experiencing marital difficulties and she has no desire to broadcast them to the entire world on national television.

“Heather is a very proud person and has no intention of letting her relationship drama play out on the show,” a source told OK! magazine. “So she’s taking a step back to focus on her husband.”

This was vaguely hinted at in Thomson's statement about leaving the show, in which she said she needed more time to focus on her family and her business.

Probably a smart move on Thomson’s part. Over 20 Real Housewives franchise cast members have gotten divorced from their spouses since appearing on the show, including her RHONY costars Bethenny Frankel (whose split is still not finalized three years after filing) and Ramona Singer, who caught her husband, Mario, with his mistress in the couple’s Hamptons home.

More: RHONY's Carole Radziwill has a lot to say about Heather Thomson leaving the show

Neither of those sound like very appealing ways for a marriage to wind up, so we can’t really blame Thomson for stepping out of the spotlight to devote more time to her husband and children if that’s what she feels is best.

Joe Giudice is doing his best to hold down the fort, but things just aren't the same without Teresa at home. In an emotional new clip for the RHONJ special, Joe struggles to handle all of the day-to-day affairs previously dealt with by his incarcerated wife.

Every cloud has its silver lining, and for the Giudice family, it has been Joe's ability to build closer relationships with his daughters. Also, Joe admits that, now that he's constantly chasing after the girls, he's managed to lose a good 10 pounds.

Teresa Giudice RHONJ clip

Perhaps the biggest silver lining related to Teresa's prison sentence is the minimization of drama between the Gorga and Giudice families. Prior to Joe and Teresa's legal issues, these two families were constantly fighting. Now, they have finally come together and let bygones be bygones. It's sad that it took a lengthy prison sentence for the Giudices and Gorgas to cut the bickering, but at least they are finally able to focus on the bigger picture.

More: Joe Giudice's new reality show may reveal some shocking truths

The rare moment of peace between the Giudice and Gorga families was touching, but the most emotional part of the preview was definitely Teresa praying on the phone with her family. Although Joe insists that she is the same strong woman running the household from behind bars, Teresa sounded broken in this video clip. She and Joe may have brought all of this on themselves, but it's still difficult not to feel at least a little bit of sympathy for this family. Teresa is obviously broken up about being away from her beloved daughters and the Giudice girls aren't taking it any easier.

More: The RHONJ twins reveal how Teresa Giudice's kids are really doing without her

In the clip, Teresa turns to her faith and asks God to bring her home to her family as soon as possible. Of course, her problems won't end when she finally leaves prison. Then, it will be Joe's turn to live behind bars and his sentence is far longer than Teresa's. That's too much for the Giudice family to worry about right now, however. At the moment, they can only bear to focus on one challenge at a time.

Do you feel bad for Joe and Teresa Giudice after seeing the clip for The Real Housewives of New Jersey special? Or is this simply the justice the Giudices deserve? Comment and share your opinion below!

RHOA's Kenya Moore’s boyfriend allegedly has a violent and scary past

Well, in Kenya Moore’s case, how much she did or did not know about her boyfriend's past is coming into question.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta star's boyfriend, according to Radar Online, was arrested for an altercation in a restaurant back in 2007. According to reports the website obtained, Moore's boyfriend Eugene Casciaro’s arrest stemmed from him making "terroristic" threats at a high-end Atlanta restaurant and then assaulting a follow dinner-goer.

More: RHOA Season 8 spoilers to help you get ready for the premiere

The event allegedly took place at Geisha House, an Atlanta sushi joint, where the victim, Grady Luckey, told police that he was minding his own business and eating his dinner with his girlfriend when Casciaro told him he was “going to f***ing kill him." Casciaro even allegedly said, “Even if you two get married tomorrow, I’d still like to kill you… I’ll kill every f***ing person in here."

Things escalated when Luckey asked Casciaro to stop yelling. He said Casciaro then “struck [him] in the back of his neck multiple times."

Naturally, the police were called and, when they showed up, they said, "He was being very uncooperative and had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person. He was arrested and charged accordingly."

He was charged with simple battery in addition to the terroristic threats charge.

More: The way RHOA's Kenya Moore handled the news about her ex is admirable

Radar reached out to Luckey for comment and he said, "I was eating a piece of sushi, and the next thing I know, I was being punched in the face!” He recalled Casciaro saying, "You don't know who I am! You don’t talk to me like that!"

The charges against the Real Housewives boyfriend were later dropped for unspecified reasons.

Fans seem to think that this either shouldn’t affect Moore very much, calling into question her own sanity, or that the Real Housewives star was just keeping Casciaro around temporarily anyway to keep her story line relevant on the show.

Do you think she knew about his volatile past? Or do you agree with fans that she’s got a screw loose herself so this is a match made in heaven?

13 Mind-blowing things in Trainspotting you never noticed

$

1. The color red

Trainspotting

Red has been used by visual artists for centuries to represent the life force that's literally inside our bodies — our blood. In Trainspotting, it represents drugs and danger — anything that threatens the character's life. The apartment where Swanney (Peter Mullan), the drug dealer who's also referred to as "Mother Superior," lives and any areas where drugs are taken are always red. The red shag carpet plays a bigger role later, as we'll see.

2. The color green

Trainspotting

Green light and green walls are seen when there is an absence of drugs or healing is taking place. The area where Dawn, the baby, resides is also green.

3. The color blue

Trainspotting

Blue is used in transitional spaces like hallways, hospitals, hotels and, of course, in the scene where Renton (Ewan McGregor) dives into the "worst toilet in Scotland" to retrieve his heroin suppositories. We see him diving into filth, but he sees crystal blue water.

4. Volcano Nightclub with Taxi Driver paintings

Trainspotting

At one point, we see Renton standing in front of a large painting of Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro). Renton's head is squarely between the barrels of Bickle's guns, suggesting he, like the irreverent Bickle, is dangerously existing on the fringe of society and constantly flirting with death.

5. Diane's sexual power

Trainspotting

Renton meets Diane (Kelly Macdonald) at a club called Volcano, which is its own sexual metaphor. But she's not passive like the other women. We see her take two drinks from a man, drink them both and leave him in the dust. When Renton approaches her, she verbally tears him apart, emasculating him before getting into the taxi and leaving the door open. Renton doesn't know what's going on until the cab driver asks if he's getting in or not.

6. Clues that Diane is underage

Trainspotting

Inside Volcano, the women's restroom has a life-size painting of Jodie Foster as Iris from Taxi Driver. This is a metaphor for an oversexualized, underage girl, perhaps alluding to Diane being just a schoolgirl.

Trainspotting

Diane's bedroom is adorned with a Warhol-esqe portrait of her, suggesting she's still in her self-centered teen years. But if you look closely, you'll see a red stuffed dog on the dresser, which only a child would have.

7. Renton's monologue in profile

Trainspotting

As Tommy (Kevin McKidd) attempts to lead Renton, Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller) and Spud (Ewen Bremner) on a sober hike in the Scottish highlands, the guys protest. Tommy suggests that being in the countryside should make them feel proud to be Scottish, but Renton rejects that notion, saying, "It's shite being Scottish, we're the lowest of the low. The scum of the f***ing earth." To demonstrate visually how worthless Renton feels, he's seen in profile through most of the monologue, proving that his Scottish mug doesn't even deserve the full screen.

8. Low camera angles when characters are on drugs

Trainspotting

9. Renton escapes jail, but gets high and sinks down below the floor

Trainspotting

Mother Superior looks down at him as if he's in a grave. Renton is overdosing. He drags him down the stairs and puts him into a taxi. Renton's POV is still from six feet down, even as he's taken to the hospital.

When the nurse injects Renton, he immediately rises out of the grave.

10. Train wallpaper on Renton's bedroom wall

Trainspotting

Renton is forced to detox in his parents' home, in the bedroom where he grew up. The trains on the wall are a reminder of the act of "trainspotting," which refers to heroin users watching the dark marks on their veins, often called tracks, left by the intravenous drug use.

11. Pea soup and a green mattress

Trainspotting

As Renton detoxes, his parents bring him pea soup, the green metaphorical elixir that will help him get clean. If you look carefully, you'll also see that his mattress is green.

12. Predicts the acceptance of transgender people

Trainspotting

Renton has a voiceover when he's out at a nightclub while Begbie (Robert Carlyle) unknowingly hooks up with a transvestite. Renton says, "Diane was right. The world is changing. Music is changing. Drugs are changing. Even men and women are changing. One thousand years from now, there will be no guys and no girls, just wankers. Sounds great to me." But Begbie didn't agree.

13. Image of Renton tied to the train tracks

Trainspotting

In this image, we see Renton is literally tied up on the railroad tracks. This is the perfect metaphor of what will happen to him if he doesn't get off drugs.

Are you looking forward to Trainspotting 2? Let us know in the comments section below.

1. Tie-dye onesie

This tie-dye onesie comes out with fun, sporadic blotches, but you can mix it up by folding and binding the onesie differently or by incorporating more than one colour.

Supplies:

Tie-dye onesie: Supplies

  • Plain onesie
  • Pencil
  • Rubber bands
  • Fabric dye
  • Rubber gloves
  • Cling film
  • Fabric dye sealant (optional)

Directions:

Step 1. Wet and scrunch

Tie-dye onesie: Step 1

Wet the onesie, wring it out, so it's only slightly damp, and scrunch it a bit so it's not too smooth.

Step 2. Spin

Tie-dye onesie: Step 2

Place a pencil (or another sharp object, like a chopstick) in the centre of the onesie and spin it around so that the material twists around it.

Step 3. Bind it

Tie-dye onesie: Step 3

Using rubber bands, bind the twisted onesie together so that it ends up forming a tight ball.

Step 4. Dye

Tie-dye onesie: Step 4

Put gloves on and follow the directions on your fabric dye to prepare it. Then pour the dye over some of the sections created by the rubber bands, wrap it up in cling film and allow it to rest for at least 12 hours.

Step 5. Dry

Tie-dye onesie: Step 5

Once the time is up, unwrap the onesie and hang it up to allow it to dry completely.

Step 6. Wash and wear

Tie-dye onesie: Step 6

Wash the onesie before you allow your baby to wear it (fabric dyes can be harsh on baby skin). If you are concerned about the tie-dye fading, you can also use a fabric dye fixative to seal it.

2. Printed onesie

Although, personally, I find it adorable, you don’t have to use this template on your baby's onesie. If there's a different shape or silhouette that you prefer — there are lots online — use it instead and follow the steps.

Supplies:

Printed onesie: Supplies

  • Plain onesie
  • Template
  • Scissors
  • Washi tape
  • Sponge
  • Textile paint
  • Textile pen

Directions:

Step 1. Centre onesie

Printed onesie: Step 1

Fold the onesie in half to figure out where the centre is.

Step 2. Print and cut template

Printed onesie: Step 2

Print and cut out the hand template and centre it on the onesie. Then place washi tape on the back.

Step 3. Stick template

Printed onesie: Step 3

Using washi tape, stick the template to the onesie and flatten it as much as possible.

Step 4. Secure the area

Printed onesie: Step 4

Stick paper scraps around the template so that no paint can escape.

Step 5. Sponge paint

Printed onesie: Step 5

Dip the sponge into the textile paint and dab at the template, creating a print on the onesie.

Step 6. Peel off template

Printed onesie: Step 6

Peel off the template and allow the print to dry.

Step 7. Place writing under

Printed onesie: Step 7

Lift up the top of the onesie and place the writing underneath so that you can see it through the material.

Step 8. Trace writing

Duggar and her new hubby, Dillon King, are soaking up the rays in Cancun, Mexico, following their Sept. 6 nuptials — and the bride is definitely not sporting the knee-length bathing suit her aunt Michelle Duggar favors.

King posted a video and a photo of Duggar rocking a turquoise two-piece in their honeymoon suite’s private plunge pool, and he couldn’t be prouder to have such a beautiful, exuberant wife.

Salter stunned fans with a lightning-fast engagement announcement just months after she appeared on the show.

The quirky 25-year-old just reunited with her college sweetheart back in June, but that didn’t stop him from popping the question on a stunning rooftop. She posted a photo announcing her new relationship status with the caption, "My one and only love."

Celebrities at Burning Man: 10 Ways the festival changed their lives

In that respect, the Burning Man festival of 2015 was like any other. But this year, some of the celebrities in attendance seemed to expand their horizons in more ways than one. Here are 10 free-spirited stars in attendance, along with the ways their lives were presumably changed forever.

1. Susan Sarandon

Burning Man - Susan Sarandon

Burning Man - Susan Sarandon

When Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon goes to Burning Man, she goes all in. This year, that included embarking on the journey a week early in order to erect the Totem of Confessions chapel that would house the ashes of her late friend/the godfather of LSD, Timothy Leary. Well, the portion of Leary's ashes Sarandon and her pals didn't water down and imbibe, that is. "I think he'd be so happy. I think he would have loved the chaos. He would have loved it," she said to USA Today. "And all these people honoring him with LSD." Accordingly, Sarandon credits Burning Man 2015 for finding herself. Unbeknownst to her, she also just became our imaginary, peace-loving patronus.

2. Derek Blasberg

Burning Man - Derek Blasberg 2

It's no shock that beloved fashion journalist Derek Blasberg spent the entirety of Burning Man 2015 cavorting all over the desert in a blur of long-limbed supermodels like Karlie Kloss and Kasha Zhukova, (pictured here). And it looks as though Burning Man was truly a revelation to Blasberg in that it affirmed there is a place in the world where gold lamé leggings and an iridescent 10-gallon hat are considered acceptable sartorial choices.

3. Sophia Bush

Burning Man - Sophia Bush

Burning Man - Sophia Bush

Chicago P.D. actress Sophia Bush has long been an advocate of women championing women — the last time we spoke with her, she emphasized the importance of empowering each other. And that, it would seem, is precisely what Bush learned while at Burning Man this year: that her tribe of "witchy warrior women who dance in the desert and leave trails of magic wherever they wander" always have her back. And, you know, would make great allies if she should ever wind up in the Thunderdome.

4. Suki Waterhouse

Clearly, Bradley Cooper's ex knows how to embrace the mind-altering vibe of Burning Man. Her weekend may have been wild and it's entirely possibly she won't remember much of it, but — thanks to her social media-savvy friends — she'll never forget just how good a sandwich can taste when all the stars align just so.

But, more importantly, Burning Man changed Waterhouse's life in that she gained the kind of perspective that comes with a life-or-death experience. This, according to her hyperbolic Instagram feed.

5. Jared Leto

Is there anything Jared Leto can't do? Let us rephrase that. Is there anything Jared Leto can't do to get us all hot and bothered? Short though this incendiary video may be, it's beautiful in a way that is equal parts disarming and enchanting. Much like Leto's face. But the hottest thing about this vid is the caption: "Mind on Fire #burningman #MarsIsComing." Oh, yes, dear friends — it would seem that Burning Man 2015 inspired Leto to create another album with his stellar band, Thirty Seconds to Mars.

6. Karlie Kloss

Taylor Swift's bestie Karlie Kloss exhibited model behavior in the Nevada desert, hanging out with fashion journalist Derek Blasberg — who snapped this shot — and mingling with other runway stunners. While we can't deduce any deeply profound revelations on her part, Kloss determined that with the right light, the right wig, the right crop top and the right expertly placed hair accessories, she could easily pull off a mean Britney Spears circa "Hit Me Baby One More Time" in a pinch.

7. Cassie

Burning Man - Cassie

Burning Man - Cassie

Triple threat dancer, actress and model Cassie nearly outshone the beaming desert rays at Burning Man, thanks to the man she called her "sunshine on a cloudy day." The man, obviously, is none other than her main squeeze, Sean "P. Diddy" Combs. So, how did Burning Man change Cassie's life? It looks to us like she realized she didn't need to sojourn to a festival in the desert to channel her inner goddess — she's got her own personal catalyst for happiness right beside her.

8. Kevin Connolly

Burning Man - Kevin Connolly

Burning Man - Kevin Connolly

Kevin Connolly has plenty of reasons to be smiling these days. For starters, news broke last week that the Entourage star will be directing the biopic of infamous New York mobster John Gotti, starring John Travolta. But that's not what we suspect the 41-year-old actor was grinning about at Burning Man. Nay, we suspect it has everything to do with the fact he noticed draping a supermodel (in this case, Sabina Gadecki, 10 years his junior) over your back serves as an effective shield against dust storms and — surprise! — isn't an altogether unpleasant experience.

9. Diplo

Burning Man - Diplo 2

DJ/producer/Katy Perry ex Diplo made the most of his time at Burning Man, doing all manner of desert activities and documenting most of them via selfie. Because he is so generous, he naturally took time to share this photo, which confirmed to the world how amazing he is, how adorable Zedd is and that Ruby Rose looks even more gorgeous in the desert light... if that's even possible.

The most important contribution Burning Man made to Diplo's life, though, was undoubtedly that it reminded him it's perfectly acceptable to wander around shirtless in extremely low-slung pants. Or, wait. Maybe that was the most important contribution Burning Man made to our lives.

10. Katy Perry

Burning Man - Katy Perry

You know, it's hard to look extremely cool and hipster-like in front of a giant futuristic desert ship when your Segway refuses to cooperate. Obviously, Katy Perry learned the importance of two things here: protective face gear and familiarizing yourself with the modus operandi of the vehicle upon which you'll be riding.

Who says girls aren't good at STEM?

$

0

And it isn't just men who fuel the stereotype that women are not as drawn to these subjects. Deep-rooted societal stereotypes suggest that girls, math and science don't mix. While research has proven that these are indeed myths, the struggle to get girls into STEM fields persists.

According to the National Girls Collaborative, young women receive just 18 percent of bachelor's degrees in computer sciences and 43 percent of degrees in mathematics and statistics in the United States. How do we reverse this trend? That's sort of the million-dollar question. What is certain is that our world would be a better place if there were more women scientists, mathematicians and engineers.

While most people know me as the Emmy-nominated actress on the hit comedy The Big Bang Theory, I also have a Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA. I arrived late to science, actually. It wasn't something I had a natural affinity for — and growing up, I always thought it was for boys. Both of my parents were English teachers, and math and science just never came easily to me.

But when I was about 15 years old and filming Blossom, I had a tutor who was the first female role model in science I ever had. She showed me that someone could be as passionate about biology as I thought you could only be about art or poetry. She was young and hip and made the sciences truly come alive. She inspired me and gave me the confidence and the skill set to go on to pursue my bachelor's degree… and eventually a Ph.D. in neuroscience.

But girls like me shouldn't have to wait until high school to meet a female role model in the sciences! We should be exposing female students to strong female STEM role models as early as possible — in elementary school.

In my role as brand ambassador for Texas Instruments calculators, I have traveled to classrooms around the country as a role model for students, especially girls, inspiring them to pursue careers in the exciting and fulfilling STEM arena. Girl students need to know being a scientist doesn't mean being stuck alone in a lab in a white coat, and being a mathematician doesn't mean crunching numbers on a calculator for the rest of their lives. We must show young women, from a young age, the varied and creatively driven fascinating careers available to them in science, math and engineering.

Although I returned to acting after my second son was born, a STEM education never leaves you, no matter whether you stay at home as a full-time mom, pursue a different kind of career or even act on a television sitcom. A strong STEM education is important — not only because the fastest-growing jobs require a math and science background, but also (and more importantly) the training puts students on a path to solid employment and job security.

Working with students for the past several years has confirmed for me that students not only need role models they can relate to, but they need to see how STEM relates to things they are interested in, whether it's sports, music videos, social media, the environment, animals — whatever.

Students who have even a fledgling interest in STEM and a knack for social media (what young person these days doesn't?) can get psyched about this new contest I'm participating in with TI, ilyTI, where we ask you to show me how you love your TI calculator. Students can even win a classroom visit from me this fall to inspire the next generation of female scientists, mathematicians and engineers!

One mom's hilarious attempt to explain women's periods to her sons

As uncomfortable as periods are, sometimes talking about them can be even more awkward.

I grew up in a household of all men, and I felt embarrassed at the mere mention of menstruation. They -- being card-carrying penis-owners -- tried their best to be sympathetic, but couldn’t understand the very real struggle of a 10-year-old girl who had cramps akin to birthing a baby whale. When it came time to ask how to get blood stains out of my panties, or whether pads were better than tampons, well, I just didn’t.

More: 5 Things I’m scared to tell my daughter about her period

Thankfully, I had my grandmother to (kind of) talk to. When I asked about tampons, her solution was to make me wear one, even though I wasn’t on my period. I still have cringe-worthy flashbacks of her pulling the string out of my body because I didn’t know how to remove the compact cotton plug.

Flash forward a few decades and there I was, once again in a household of all men -- this time with a husband and two sons. I hadn't really made a decision about when I would initiate the "girls have periods" talk with my boys, and I hardly ever mentioned menstruation to my husband -- although he knew enough about female cycles from his three sisters to express the appropriate amount of sympathy when needed.

Yet I knew my boys needed to know about periods because half the population has, or will have them, and they can impact the way a woman functions. At some point boys will either date, mate with, marry or befriend a woman who menstruates and they need to know what's happening, without losing their s--t.

My litmus test for whether or not our kids were ready to know about any mature subject was when they were old enough to ask or express interest. If a question about body parts, baby-making or even erections came up, I knew I would respond truthfully and factually. I envisioned these talks happening when my sons were pre-teens, not when they were just 6 and 8. Life, however, had different plans for us.

Our talk was spurred by our then 6-year-old who noticed a pretty pink wrapper in my bathroom trash can. Being a boy, he didn't hesitate to reach in the recepticle, withdraw the wrapper, and unfold it -- revealing a used maxi pad. The site of blood didn't gross him out, but it concerned him. With the pad clutched firmly in his fist, he ran to the kitchen (where I was entertaining friends), held it up and asked if I was hurt.

After the searing-humiliation, I decided to sit my boys down and have a frank, age-appropriate discussion with them about the menstrual cycle. Surprisingly, they took the news pretty well, even though most of what I said was hard for them to grasp.

“Boys, I want you to know something about women. We have eggs inside our tummies.”

“Like a chicken?” my oldest asked.

“Sort of, just way smaller. Anyway, we have these eggs, and every month, if a woman doesn’t get pregnant, her body pushes an egg out – ”

“Out of their butts?” my youngest yelled.

“No, not out of our butts. We push that tiny egg out of our vaginas, but in order to get the egg out, our body mixes it with blood. All we can really see is the blood, but it’s not a boo-boo, it’s normal.”

More: Why I won't teach my kids the word 'fat'

They both went silent on me and stared with their mouths open, so I went into over-explain mode, mentioning the lining of my uterus and vaginal secretions, all in an effort to make things better. Before I knew what happened, we were discussing fertilization, what ejaculation was, and how old they had to be to make sperm. It wasn’t my finest hour.

Thankfully, my sons are like goldfish when it comes to things like this, and they mostly forgot all of what we talked about. That’s why a few years later, when they were 11 and 13, I had the chance to re-explain and do it in a way that didn’t leave all of us traumatized.

This time, because they were older and desensitized to pretty much everything (thank you Internet!), they managed to not take our discussion like a spear to the gut.

We covered the basics once more and this time (thank you again, Internet!) we got to watch funny, informative videos that helped us both feel at ease.

My best advice for talking to your boys about periods is to keep it simple. It turns out very few boys will truly want to dive deep into the world of sloughed endometrial linings and viscous vaginal fluid.

But do talk to them -- lest you be responsible for the panicked scream of a grown man seeing a used feminine hygiene product for the very first time.

Every single man and woman that has attempted the challenge is an athletic beast of epic proportions, yet after seven seasons and 3,500 contestants, not one single American competitor has ever been able to complete all four stages of the course — until now.

Fort Collins, Colorado, resident Isaac Caldiero went down in history on Monday when he became the first American Ninja Warrior champ and walked away with the show's handsome $1 million prize after completing the brutal course in just 26.14 seconds.

Caldiero tried his best to take down the course in 2013, but ultimately failed. He gave it his best shot again in 2014, when he was taken down by the salmon ladder in stage two.

2. He's a professional rock climber

Caldiero is an avid climber, a skill that is obviously integral to overcoming the Ninja Warrior obstacles, and he gives it huge credit in his training for the show.

"In the moment, when you finally see the course, it's too late to go train, so you just have to be ready," he said of his regimen to Esquire magazine. "Most of it, year-round, we're rock climbing and developing our grip strength and a lot of our coordination skills... I built a couple of the obstacles in my parents' backyard as well as just basic gym-type training. Pull-ups, push-ups, cardio, intertwined with rock climbing and ninja-specific obstacles."

Caldiero's significant other, Laura Kisana, made it to the American Ninja Warrior Season 5 finals in Las Vegas and also competed in Season 6 and Season 7, according to her Instagram.

Like her boyfriend, Kisana is also a master rock climber.

4. He moonlights as a busboy

While Caldiero's passions clearly lie elsewhere, he pays the bills by working as a busboy. We're assuming those days might be behind him, however, considering his newfound fame and the addition of a cool $1 million to his bank account.

"I've worked a lot of hard jobs. Just to begin rock climbing, I was cleaning bathrooms in a trade for a climbing membership," Caldiero told Esquire when asked about his prize money. "Over the years, I've never made more than $10,000 a year. Even now that it's me and Laura, together we've never made more than that. So all of [a] sudden, now we just have this huge pot of gold. The world is our oyster. It's going to be an amazing ride."

Isaac Caldiero just made history by becoming the first-ever American Ninja Warrior winner from America. What's he going to do now? He wants to hit the happiest place on earth, of course.

"At the end of the day, all we want to do is go rock climb," he said to Esquire. "I mean, we'll upgrade our RV. We have an old 1970 RV; we might get a new engine for it. Also, I've never been to Disneyland — maybe we'll go there."

Gendered packaging really does influence how we buy food

More: Fast-food kids' meals have too much salt, according to study

A new study titled "Macho nachos: The implicit effects of gendered food packaging on preferences for healthy and unhealthy foods" was conducted by the University of Manitoba and published in the Social Psychology journal, and it has revealed some very interesting things about the way consumers think — and what they want from their food packaging.

Food is marketed differently to different sexes, and we have come to expect that healthier food products are associated with femininity, while unhealthy foods have a more masculine appeal. This study examined exactly how the cultural stereotypes about gender influence our food choices and possibly even the way we think it tastes.

More: Lime and raspberry ice cream cupcakes are the perfect no-bake treat

The study conducted a series of experiments using 93 adult participants, Time magazine reports. The first experiment, conducted by lead researcher Luke Zhu, asked the participants which foods they thought were masculine and feminine (for example, baked chicken versus fried chicken or baked potatoes versus french fries). The results found a link between food and gender perception, with unhealthy foods deemed masculine and healthier options considered feminine.

The second experiment extended these effects to food packaging. When the packaging and the healthiness of the food had clear gender packaging (feminine for healthy food and masculine for unhealthy), "both male and female participants rated the product as more attractive, said that they would be more likely to purchase it, and even rated it as tasting better compared to when the product was stereotype incongruent," the study states.

More: The Five Bite Diet trend: friend or foe?

Lastly, the third study wanted to prove that "packaging that explicitly appealed to gender stereotypes ('The muffin for real men') reversed the schema congruity effect, but only among participants who scored high in psychological reactance."

According to Time, researchers used mini blueberry muffins packaged in a way that was considered either feminine, with an image of a ballerina and the slogan "healthy" emblazoned on it, or masculine, with the slogan "mega" and the image of men playing football.

The study also used packages that had the "healthy" slogan and the image of men playing football, and vice versa. But this packaging proved less popular. What this means is that people respond better to clear signals about gender marketing and do not like when the packaging sends mixed messages, like healthy food in masculine packaging or junk food in feminine packaging.

This study really makes you think about your purchasing decisions, and as much as we want to believe we make our decisions freely, it turns out marketers have an even bigger impact on our food than we originally thought.

Again, there was never any question that Wonder is "the coolest cat since the saber tooth" as a friend of mine notably remarked when I said I was writing this article. But there's something about this skit that brings that coolness into the 21st century for a whole new generation to enjoy.

Not to mention, all of the road-trip sing-alongs of Wonder's biggest hits including, "Isn't She Lovely," "Superstition" and "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" make us need to go to a Wonder concert ASAP.

Even better, Corden gleefully calls his wife Julia Carey during the segment to have Wonder sing her another infamous hit, "I Just Called to Say I Love You." While Wonder talks to and then sings to Corden's wife, Corden is jumping up and down, laughing like a 5-year-old getting bike on Christmas. Wonder even personalizes the song, changing it to, "I Just Called to Say James Loves You."

And after the call, Corden remarks just like any other young married dude would, "Oh, my God. You've just won me so many brownie points with my wife."

Like that moment couldn't get any better, Corden even cries! Like, actual tears, which he wipes away once the car stops. Yes, they were still driving through all of this.
