Teenager with bone cancer told by several doctors she had a 'pulled muscle'

0
0

The painkillers prescribed for what Melissa’s GP assumed was a pulled muscle didn’t help and the pain eventually became so bad she couldn’t lie down or sleep at night, reported the Daily Mail. Over a three-month period, the 16-year-old from Rochdale, Lancashire, attended the same doctor’s surgery no less than 10 times and was seen by four different GPs — who all told her she had a sports injury.

More: Teen with cancer is "proud" of her bald head

When the pain became so intense Melissa’s mother Alison Brookes took her to A&E it was discovered that she had a collapsed lung. Scans revealed that she has Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer. She had an operation to remove four of her ribs and is now undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Mrs. Brookes told the Daily Mail that she feels that they were “fobbed off” by Melissa’s GP, who she believes missed several opportunities to diagnose her daughter’s cancer earlier.

More: 11 Inspiring quotes about fighting cancer

''She did a lot of trampolining so we had faith in the doctor's opinion at first, but soon the pain got so bad that she couldn't sleep at night," said Mrs. Brookes. "The painkillers did nothing to help Melissa. It gradually just got worse. I took Melissa back to visit the doctor time and time again but they always said the same thing. We saw four different GPs at the same practice in at least ten separate medical appointments and they all fobbed us off. Melissa would sit on the sofa crying in pain. She has never been one to moan or complain and it was awful to see her suffering. She felt as though no-one believed her."

"I am just glad I rushed Melissa to hospital that day," she added. "If I hadn't I could be telling a very different story."

Raj Patel, medical director for NHS England in Greater Manchester and Lancashire said: "We would like our express our sympathy and concern for Alison and her family during what must be a distressing time for them. Our priority is to ensure that patients receive the highest quality primary care services at all times. We have not yet received a complaint by Alison or her family but should we do so, we will take the issue forward and investigate it thoroughly (sic)."

Luckily most of the time our doctors get it right. But Melissa's story has an important message: if you think they haven't, don't give up. Sometimes instinct is just as powerful as medical training.

10 Things only introverts will understand

Our society is having a love affair with extroverts. There's a special place in our nation's heart for the life-of-the-party Bill Clintons, the whatever-will-he-say-next Charlie Sheens and the which-body-part-will-be-revealed-next Kim Kardashians.

Introverts are often mistaken for being shy, awkward and even unfriendly — labels we totally don't deserve! While a hundred million extroverts are out there in the world making new friends, we stayed home on a Saturday night to create this list of 10 things only the quietest, most contemplative members of our society will understand.

1. How it feels when someone sits next to you on a long flight or train ride

...and they talk and talk and talk.

2. When you get invited to another party

It's what you really wish you could say to another mom at the umpteenth birthday party your extroverted child has been invited to this month.

3. When a friend cancels on you

6. Someone schedules an impromptu meeting without notice

7. Going to the movies alone makes people look at you weird

Beef and zucchini tostadas with chipotle-cream sauce in under 25 minutes

These gluten-free beef and zucchini tostadas are fun for any night of the week

I went just slightly unconventional with this dish and included grilled zucchini in the mix. And why not? They’re everywhere you look right now and there is nothing better than eating seasonal produce. Change things up by including different veggies when the fall or winter hits.

Serve these gluten-free beef and zucchini tostadas any night of the week

These gluten-free tostadas are perfect for a festive dinner. Serve them with rice and beans for a complete meal.

Note: Gluten can be found in many different foods and products — from ketchup to soy sauce to candy and seasonings. While SheKnows.com tries to ensure these recipes are gluten-free, carefully read the ingredient labels of all food and food products you use for these recipes to ensure they are also gluten free.

Beef and zucchini tostadas with chipotle-cream sauce recipe

These tostadas are so easy to customize. Add corn or cubes of avocado. You could also add cheese to the tops and pop them under the broiler for about 20 seconds.

Serves 4

Prep time: 5 minutes | Cook time 15 minutes | Total time: 23 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 chipotle pepper from a can of chipotle in adobo sauce
  • 1/2 tablespoon of the adobo sauce
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1-1/2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1/4 cup diced white onion
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon hot sauce, more or less to taste
  • 1 teaspoon salt, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper, divided
  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • 1 large zucchini, ends trimmed and sliced into 1/2-inch rounds
  • 1 large red bell pepper, seeds and membrane removed, cut into strips
  • 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, torn, as garnish
  • 8 (5-inch round) gluten-free corn tostada shells

Directions:

  1. Add the sour cream, chipotle, adobo sauce and milk to a food processor and mix until combined. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  2. Place a large skillet over medium heat on the stovetop. Let the pan heat up and add the oil. When the oil is hot, add the onion and cook for about 3 minutes. When the onion begins to soften, add the garlic, then the ground beef. Break up the ground beef with the back of a cooking spoon and cook, stirring, until browned.
  3. Once the ground beef is browned, add the tomato paste, water, coriander, cumin, hot sauce, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper. Cook for another minute or so, stirring, then remove from the heat and cover.
  4. Place a grill pan over medium heat on the stovetop. When it’s hot, lightly spray with the nonstick cooking spray. When the grill pan is hot, add the zucchini rounds and the pepper strips. Cook for just a few minutes on each side, or until dark grill marks form. Remove from the heat and sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper.
  5. When cool to the touch, dice the zucchini rounds and the red pepper strips.
  6. Assemble the tostadas by first adding 3-4 heaping tablespoons of the ground beef to each, followed by the zucchini and peppers. Top each tostada with a drizzle or dollop of the chipotle-cream sauce, and garnish with the cilantro.
  7. Serve immediately.

More: The Bachelorette's Andi Dorfman takes another jab at brokenhearted Nick Viall

Instead of blasting Viall for being a terrible guy, the former The Bachelorette star made a surprisingly nice comment about how he is genuine and really looking for love.

"I had my ups and downs with Nick, but the thing I will say about him is I know that he is genuine in what he wants and that is love," Dorfman told Us Weekly. "Whether or not he goes about it the way that everybody else would."

More: Nick Viall vs. Ben Higgins for The Bachelor (POLL)

Viall won over a lot of fans during Kaitlyn Bristowe's season, and though he ultimately lost out at a chance at love when Bristowe picked contestant Shawn Booth, there are rumors he may be returning to our screens — this time as The Bachelor.

So, what does Dorfman think about Viall potentially being the next Bachelor?

"I still definitely believe that his intentions are absolutely to fall in love. So I think that's another great characteristic that you need for a Bachelor, but we'll see," she confessed.

1. Amusement park nightmare

Amusement park horror stories are always terrifying since they happen in a place where we're supposed to be having good, clean fun. One man's mistake after riding a roller coaster ultimately led to his death at the Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio, last night. After riding the park's famous Raptor roller coaster, 45-year-old James A. Young II jumped the surrounding fence to retrieve some items he'd lost during the bumpy ride. Beyoncé has been unveiled as Vogue's September cover girl, and the Internet can't contain itself. Legal marijuana may be coming to a progressive Midwestern state near you. Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted has confirmed that the pro-legalization group ResponsibleOhio has collected enough signatures (320,267, if you're counting) to get the pot vote on the ballot for Nov. 3, for medical and recreational use. Now it's in the hands of the Ohioans: If this passes (as many expect it to), Ohio will be the fifth state to legalize recreational marijuana in the U.S. — CNN

4. Come on, Kentucky

Marriage equality has been the law of the land for a good month or more, but some Kentucky officials still aren't having it. Even in the face of a court order, a county clerk in Morehead, Kentucky, has refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Rowan County clerk Kim Davis claims religion, saying her Christian faith will not allow her to sanction — or provide licenses — for same-sex marriage. When her discrimination was brought to court, Judge Bunning heartily disagreed, saying that Davis' religious convictions don't give her the right not to perform her legal duties. Davis' lawyers are appealing. — The New York Times

5. Might want to hold your breath

Air pollution in China has always been a cause for concern, but now it's reaching epidemic levels. A study published by the Berkeley Earth independent research group in the journal PLOS One from the Public Library of Science confirmed that air pollution in China is killing an average of 4,000 people per day. Researchers blame coal burning for creating the tiny particulate pollutant behind this major problem: PM2.5s are responsible for 17 percent of China's mortality rate, known to cause asthma, lung cancer, heart attack and stroke. 6. More jail death controversy

On the heels of the mysterious death of Sandra Bland, who died in police custody after a routine traffic stop, everyone's asking questions about what happened to 37-year-old Ralkina Jones of Ohio. Jones was arrested by the Cleveland Heights Police Department in late July after she had a fight outside of a bar with her ex-husband. Jones was found dead in her jail cell just two days later. Authorities now say the medical log sheet and jail log don't match up — Jones may have been dispensed too much medication. — NBC News

Now all of us science geeks have even more street cred: Big science news is trending in the Facebook feed. The journal Science reports that "Young Jupiter," a.k.a. 51 Eridani b, is the first exoplanet to be discovered by the new Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) on the Gemini South telescope in Chile. This planet is 100 light years away and looks remarkably similar to how Jupiter once did — hence, the nickname. A practical guide to traveling abroad with a pet

0
0

Let’s break down the basics: pet passports, microchips, vaccinations and airline policies. These are requirements for some of the most popular destinations, such as the UK, Australia and Spain.

1. Pets must be microchipped

Your pet should already have a microchip, but make sure it's the right kind. Your pet must be microchipped with an ISO 11784-compliant 15-digit pet microchip, which is accepted by most major countries.

2. Get a pet passport

Similar to your own passport, your pet’s passport is a must for international travel. It comes in the form of a pet's health certificate. Because each country sets its own requirements for pet travel, the process of obtaining certification varies slightly depending on the destination. Here are the three steps to take as outlined by USA Today.

  • Request pet travel information from the local consulate or embassy of the country you and your pet are traveling to as the specific requirements are different for each country. For example, ask what forms are required and what vaccinations your pet must have, and determine if the country has any other pet restrictions, such as a home quarantine period.
  • Make sure the veterinarian you're working with is certified by the USDA as an Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service veterinarian, or ask for a referral to one. Have the veterinarian give your dog or cat the required vaccinations, including a rabies vaccine, and inspect it for good health before asking him or her to complete the health certificate.
  • Send the completed health certificate to your state's USDA Veterinary Services center to have it endorsed by the state veterinarian. Then include a signed rabies vaccination certificate and an original copy of any lab work that is noted on the health certificate as supporting documentation. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time — often several months — in advance of your trip to complete this.

3. Follow the foreign country's vaccination guidelines

The timing of vaccinations is extremely important, so read the rules carefully. In Australia and the UK, the blood titer test (RNATT) should be completed no sooner than 180 days prior to entry. Make sure your veterinarian scans your pet's microchip prior to the titer test.

Before your dog or cat can enter Australia, for example, it must be treated against internal parasites twice with the second treatment administered within five days of transport. Two treatments against external parasites must be administered to your cat 14 days apart with the second treatment within five days of transport. Dogs must start treatments 21 days prior to Ehrlichia blood sampling. Your pet must have had a rabies vaccination within one year of entry.

If your pet is entering Spain from a rabies-free or rabies-controlled country, it will need a rabies vaccination after the microchip is implanted and more than 21 days prior to entry but not more than the expiration date of the manufacturer of the vaccine. If your dog or cat or ferret has not been vaccinated after it was fitted with a microchip, it will have to be vaccinated again after the microchip is implanted. Once you have entered Spain, a 21-day waiting period is not required for subsequent visits, provided rabies boosters are kept up-to-date and the other entry requirements are met.

4. Read airlines policies carefully

Check reservation timing and fees (depending on route and whether or not your pet will be flying in-cabin or cargo) and the specific carrier requirements for your pet (material, weight and dimensions of portable crates), including rules on proper food and water receptacles in transit.

Be sure to note restrictions on certain breeds as outlined by the respective airline. Spain's Iberia Airlines, for example, requires certain breeds to be muzzled even when flying in cargo, like the pit bull terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier and American Staffordshire terrier. On Australia's Qantas Airlines, some breeds (full and cross bred) aren't allowed at all, such as the Brazilian Fila, Dogo Argentino, American pit bull and pit bull terriers.

Assistance dogs have slightly more leeway. You can bring your assistance dog into the UK without quarantine as long as it meets the rules of the EU pet travel scheme and in Australia, only service dogs can be carried into the passenger cabin of the aircraft.

Blake making his dress on Project Runway

The designers meet Tim at a Hallmark store, where they learn the challenge is to create clothing from, that's right, Hallmark cards. Everyone is being extremely generous with one another, trading materials, and saying so far, this feels like a big family. (A big family on a TV show who are competing with each other for $10,000 and various prizes.) The timing of this proclamation is nothing less than ironic because when Blake doesn't understand what Swapnil is explaining about big machines and heavy machines, he says, "I don't speak Indian."

In his stroll around the designers' workroom, Tim uses the word "constipated" to refer to David's design but seems pleased overall. Edmond makes everyone want to get married in his paper wedding dress before it even hits the runway, and Amanda freaks out and cries, and freaks out some more.

Unfortunately, you can't kick someone off a show about fashion for saying something racist (yet). You can kick them off for making something awful, even if they had to make it out of paper, but guest judge Ashley Tisdale loved Blake's dress, and he lived to design another day. The consensus on Twitter is that he should have been eliminated this week due to both his behavior and his design.

Ultimately, David was sent to clean out his space, and Edmond and his fantastically risky paper wedding dress won the challenge.

Do you think someone should have called Blake out on Project Runway for his racist comments? What looks did you love this week? Did the judges make the right decision?

Former View cohost dishes on how she was really treated on the show

Wallace learned about her termination from an article in Variety magazine, and in a follow-up interview with the same publication, she is now revealing how shocked she was to learn about it in such a manner.

"They never called me," she exclaims. "I had never heard one note from anybody inside the entire organization during the entire season. No one said a word to me… It was like being invisible." She continued, "The night [Variety's] story ran, they summoned my agent and told me they'd like to consider me for a contributor's role, and they also made me an offer at ABC News to do the conventions and debates."

All of this, seemingly out of nowhere, the former George W. Bush communications chief was blindsided and the part-time, seems a lot like damage control commentary gig they offered her, she wasn't interested in. "If it had been two days a week or enough time to have more of a presence, I'd consider it," she said of the offer. "They weren't interested in negotiating with me. It didn't make sense for me."

More: Rosie Perez walked off The View for one stunning reason

Wallace had been brought on the show to be the resident conservative Republican and provide the viewpoint of and take stances for the far right. But according to ABC, Wallace was "not offering enough dissent about political issues and continually voicing her lack of knowledge about celebrities."

Wallace quipped back in July when the firing was still a rumor, saying, "They called me Kardashian illiterate."

There were rumors that the axing stemmed from friction between Wallace and fellow former cohost Rosie O’Donnell, but Wallace claims that while volatile, her relationship with O'Donnell never reached a fever pitch. Wallace's comments about her former coworker were — not surprisingly — pretty politically correct.

More: Joy Behar has a great reason for not returning to The View

She said about O’Donnell (who exited the show in January for health reasons), "She was really intense, and that intensity could really be uncomfortable… And listen, maybe this is where I failed in the eyes of the executives who hired me. Maybe this combustion is what they were seeking."

O’Donnell oftentimes was viewed by the public as being a little too abrasive in her opinions, to the chagrin, one would think, of the executives. But given this information, maybe it was exactly what they were looking for and Wallace wasn't giving them enough heat.

And though the manner in which things unfolded seems unprofessional from the outside, Wallace maintains there are no hard feelings. She says, "I don't wish them anything but roaring success. But it's sort of like a breakup. If you're dating the quarterback and then you go out with the hockey player, you just go to the hockey games. I don't think I'll still go to the football games."

6 Best self-tanners under $15

For easy application:

L'Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze Pro Perfect Salon Airbrush Self-Tanning Mist

L'Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze Pro Perfect Salon Airbrush Self-Tanning Mist (Ulta, $11)

PROS: The benefit of a misting spray like this is that you keep your hands and fingers out of the mix. This superfine mist goes on so easily, and it’s really very low-fuss — no rubbing-in required. The color is great and streaking is minimal, if at all. Impatient girls, take note: It takes a good several hours, or even overnight, for the full effects to show.

CON: It’s almost impossible to not get any spray on your floor (or furniture), so it’s best to cover any surfaces you don’t want to “tan” with old towels or similar. No biggie!

THE SMELL: The scent is interesting ... it’s kind of woodsy, or cigar-like, which sounds odd but isn’t bad. And it fades quickly!

TIP: Don't spray your feet. Enough of the mist will land on your feet anyway.

For dark, pro results:

Cocoa Brown 1-Hour Tan Mousse

Cocoa Brown 1-Hour Tan Mousse (Rickysnyc.com, $14)

PROS: This is a cult favorite — you can check online for all the glowing beauty blogger reviews! A quality product for an affordable price, this light mousse formula is really easy to apply. The longer you leave it on, the darker the tan, so the first time you try it, you can kind of test it out. The color is great.

CON: Though it makes the formula flexible in terms of darkness, having to leave it on for at least an hour,  and then wash it off, makes for a bit of a time commitment.

THE SMELL: It advertises a “Floral Tahitian Gardenia” scent, which is fair enough, I guess. To me it smells like someone’s roommate’s nice conditioner, which works!

TIP: Use gloves when you apply so you don’t have to worry about washing your hands.

For an instant bronze:

Sephora Collection Tinted Self-Tanning Body Mist

Sephora Collection Tinted Self-Tanning Body Mist (Sephora, $6 for 1.5 oz)

PROS: You can see exactly where you’ve applied this mist because it delivers a soft bronze glow immediately! Then the self-tanner develops over time, creating a nice, light tan. Pretty cool.

CON: None!

THE SMELL: Smells great! It’s quite tropical, but not overpowering.

TIP: It’s very fast-drying, which is great, but be ready with a soapy washcloth if you make any mistakes. This stuff works well to layer; start with one application and then add another the next day to go darker.

For gradual build-up:

Nivea Sun-Kissed Radiance Gradual Tanner & Body Toner

Nivea Sun-Kissed Radiance Gradual Tanner & Body Toner (Rickysnyc.com, $15)

PRO: Great for self-tanning ‘fraidy cats (like me), this stuff works sloooooooowly and graaaaaaadually builds up coverage over time (like, over days), so you never have to worry about suddenly resembling an Oompa Loompa or someone’s crazy card shark granny in Florida. The formula is more lightweight than what you might expect from a Nivea product (it feels almost gel-like), which means it smoothes on really easily. Just wash your hands and let your color develop over time.

CON: Hmm. Not really any cons here, unless you’re looking for a fast-acting, dark tanning solution, but then you should try a different product altogether!

THE SMELL: At first it’s just a nice, light scent — almost a little tropical/coco-buttery. After several hours, I did notice a lingering scent that anyone who has used a similar type of gradual tanner will recognize, but it’s not overpowering, and I actually like it. It was gone by the next morning.

TIP: Rub this on at night, and wake up to a new glow!

For an instantly glowing face, plus SPF:

Australian Gold Faces Sheer Coverage Kona Infused, With Gradual Self Tanner, SPF 45

Australian Gold Faces Sheer Coverage Kona Infused, With Gradual Self Tanner, SPF 45 (Walgreens, $9)

PRO: This 3-in-one product (self-tanner, bronzer and SPF 45) is an Allure Best of Beauty Winner, and for good reason. You’ll get an immediate glow, while the self-tanner works its magic, and you’ll also be protected from the sun!

CON: None.

THE SMELL: Like all Australian Faces products, it’s got a strong tropical scent. Cha cha cha!

TIP: Don’t go crazy with this — if, say, you’re going out to the beach for the day, bring along some regular sunscreen to use when it’s time to reapply protection.

For face, with skin care

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta® Glow Pads

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta® Glow Pads (Sephora, $12 for 6 pads)

PRO: Self-tanner plus anti-aging! Build up a pretty, natural-looking tan while delivering some major skin care ingredients to your face. These pads are soaked in a formula that contains beta-hydroxy acids, which exfoliate, tighten pores, eliminate blackheads and help fade existing sunspots. Meanwhile, active vitamin D gives you a sun-kissed glow while enhancing the benefits of the other vitamins and antioxidants.

CON: These might be too strong for super sensitive skin; definitely do a patch-test first. And, if you use more than a couple a week, it could get expensive.

THE SMELL: There is a faint “self-tanner” smell, but it’s not bad at all

7 Heroes Reborn spoilers to get you more excited for the revival

1. One of the original major characters is dead

Heroes Gif

Image: Giphy

Sorry to break it to fans of the original Heroes, but it looks Claire Bennet, the cheerleader character played by Hayden Panettiere, didn't make it. “She died a year prior to where the Heroes Reborn story picks up,” Kring said. Though we don't know exactly what happened yet, Kring did say that Claire's adoptive father, Noah Bennet aka the man with the horn-rimmed glasses (played by Jack Coleman), will be the one to reveal the story of her death.

2. The focus will be on the new characters

Despite the return of some of the original cast in guest roles (including Greg Grunberg's Matt Parkman, Masi Oka's Hiro, Sendhil Ramamurthy's Mohinder and Cristine Rose's Angela Petrelli), the show will largely focus on the new characters and their origin stories.

"This is closer to [my] original idea of origin stories," Kring said, per IGN. "The primal existential questions of why and what’s my purpose? I always thought of it as a show that could repopulate itself. Falling in love with new characters is just as important as returning cast."

3. Reborn is set five years later

Heroes Reborn GIF

Image: Giphy

Kring confirmed that the amount of time that the show has been off the air is also "the amount of time that has passed in the story world." As he described it, "We’re not treating it as the fifth season, we’re treating it as the 10th season, as if there are five seasons in between."

4. The new season will tie up some loose ends

The Season 4 finale (which ended up also being the series' final episode) ties directly into the opening of the next season. "We end on a scene where basically [Claire] outs the idea that she has powers, in front of the whole world, news cameras," Kring explained. "That was literally the last scene of the series." Viewers will get to see the repercussions of that in Reborn, in which the heroes aren't doing so well (as seen in the trailer below).

"It was a baton pass of where to go from there," Kring said of how this season will pick up where the last left off. "Since we didn’t get to have a fifth season, I always had in my mind that we had some unfinished business there."

5. Zachary Levi and Judith Shekoni will be playing bad guys

Levi has remained pretty tight-lipped about his character on the upcoming show, but during the panel, he did imply that he's a villain. Well, sort of. "We’re bad. We’re misunderstood. We’ve been given this really cool world to play characters that are ambiguous," he said, also adding, "As far as Judi and I are concerned, you very quickly learn why they are on that journey and will that journey ultimately pay off for their souls, for their psyche."

 6. Time travel will be big this season

Masi Oka GIF

As if Heroes didn't already contain tons of cool sci-fi elements, the show will also be doing even more with time travel this go-around. “As you know, [Masi Oka’s] character is a time-traveler and — spoiler alert — that could become a very useful power for us,” says Kring. “[But] none of the former characters except for [Jack Coleman’s] character is in every episode.”

More: Fuller House and all other TV revivals are a bloody awful idea

7. There could be more than just one season of Heroes Reborn

Right now, the revival will only consist of 13 episodes, but Kring says there is potential for the series to continue beyond that. “It’s 13 episodes, so you’re going to get a beginning, a middle and an end. It allows us to do a very aggressive kind of storytelling,” he said. “We have only spoken about doing this [series]… That being said, I always felt that the brand was elastic enough, a broad enough premise… I feel confident that we can find other stories to tell with new characters and some recurring characters.”

Heroes Reborn will kick off with a two-hour premiere on Sept. 24 on NBC.

12 Incredibly American habits that make the rest of the world hate us

0
0

Thankfully, I'm not the only loud, uncoordinated American that experiences this. Apparently, there are many random things we do without thinking that are terribly offensive to people in various countries around the world. But that's not even the worst part — the worst part is, the offensive actions vary quite a bit from country to country, so it's that much easier to look like a jerk. They should really list them in the index of translation books so we don't accidentally start a war on foreign soil.

You'll be surprised how many of these things you do everyday without thinking. While we may not see them as rude, just think of all the silly little gestures we get so bent out of shape over that foreign folks might not even notice. It's truly fascinating to think about which social gestures stuck around, and why; but what's even more fun is learning some new ones!

Here are 12 offensive gestures from around the world that might get you into serious trouble if you use them accidentally. However, if you choose to use one on purpose, do it at your own risk.

1. Crossing your fingers

Image: Giphy

Country: Vietnam

Now this is kind of funny, because we do this for luck in America. However, it says something very different in Vietnam. Crossing your fingers signifies a vagina, and is thus an insulting gesture.

2. Smiling at strangers

Image: Giphy

Country: Russia

I would get in so much trouble in Russia, because I have "nice girl face," and thus a smile is my resting pose. Apparently, smiling in Russia is a super intimate thing. So, if you do it to strangers, it makes you seem disingenuous.

More: Mind your manners at the gym

3. Firmly shaking hands

Image: Giphy

Country: The Philippines

My dad always told me a firm handshake was a sign of strength and confidence, but not in the Philippines. They see it as extremely confrontational and aggressive — two big no-no's in this country.

4. Being punctual

Image: Giphy

Country: Argentina

OK, seriously?! I am not doing well in this game so far. Argentinians find it rude if you show up within an hour of a suggested start time to a party or event. I suppose that's what we call fashionably late, but to them it's just the right thing to do.

5. Talking with your hands in your pockets

Image: Giphy

Country: Germany

So, I'll be wearing a lot of pocketless dresses when I go to Germany, because this is considered rude, and it's my go-to stance when I'm nervous.

More: Ms. Manners: A guide to modern email etiquette

6. Tipping

Image: Giphy

Countries: Japan and Korea

Well this one isn't too bad, is it? These countries are quite proud, and being tipped is insulting, no matter how great the service was.

7. Giving thumbs up

Image: Giphy

Country: Thailand

Again, what's good in our country is rude in Asia. Thumbs up isn't really obscene, but rather the equivalent to sticking out your tongue at someone. So you probably shouldn't do it as an adult.

8. Doing anything with your left hand

Image: Giphy

Countries: Asia, Africa and part of the Middle East

I am a lefty, and thus should probably steer clear of these places. These countries associate your left hand with wiping your a**, so anytime you gesture with it, it's (naturally) insulting.

9. Opening a gift in front of the giver

Image: Giphy

Countries: China and India

While opening gifts in front of the giver is sort of a ritual in America (showers, Christmas), in these countries it looks impatient and selfish. I never thought of it that way, but I'll totally own up to that.

More: Teaching kids lunchtime table manners

10. Giving the "OK" sign

Image: Giphy

Countries: Greece and Turkey

Simply put, it's the equivalent to calling someone gay, and not in the nice way. It also means "butt hole" in Germany and Brazil, but that feels far less offensive.

11. Chewing gum

Image: Giphy

Countries: Luxembourg, Switzerland, France and Singapore

Now, I've never thought this was a terribly attractive habit, but in these countries it's considered vulgar; and in Singapore it is actually illegal.

12. Laughing out loud

Image: Giphy

Countries: Japan

I'd be kicked out of Japan before I left the airport. An open-faced, teeth-showing laugh there is thought to "sound like horses," and is thus rude and unladylike. Whatever. Who needs ladies when we have jokes?

Vanderpump Rules' Kristen Doute has new, unexpected project post-Sur

But she wants her fans to know she's back — and she's got a brand-new bag.

Just a little over two months after she declared her new fashion T-shirt line was her new baby and that she was devoting all her time to it, the reality TV star is now adding a new position to her résumé: that of comedian.

In addition to her work with James Mae in the fashion industry, Doute and best friend Rachael O'Brien were the stars of their own show onstage at The Parlor in Hollywood just a few days ago.

On Aug. 11, the duo, along with Jaclyn Marfuggi and Gabi Conti hosted, directed and produced a sketch and stand-up comedy night, a show they called Carb Free [sic] Comedy.

The biggest shocker wasn't the reality starlet onstage doing stand-up — it was her Sur crew coming to stand by her side in support.

Doute's ex, James Kennedy, and Scheana Schay, Jax Taylor and Stassi Schroeder all stopped by. One of the main reasons Doute was let go by her former employer was because of all the trouble she stirred up at Sur (and for causing quite the commotion between Kennedy and Taylor for her cheating antics).

An onlooker claimed everyone was civil, though. "Everyone actually got along well,” they said. And even with former flame Kennedy (and former side-guy Taylor) in attendance, the witness claimed Doute was making eyes with a new man. "Kristen was even flirting with a hot new guy!"

Kim Kardashian makes a great point about gun control in four simple tweets

The reality star tweeted her dismay and disgust after learning about the murders of eight people allegedly at the hands of David Conley, who is accused of the shootings of his ex-girlfriend Valerie Jackson, her husband and her six children — including his own son. In her posts, Kardashian revealed some gruesome details of the killings.

Kardashian's point is a valid one. Conley has a long criminal record dating back at least 15 years, including auto theft, drug possession, evading arrest and domestic violence. In 2000, he was sentenced to five years in prison for assaulting Jackson with a knife. He was arrested again in 2008 for disorderly conduct, and in 2013 for threatening Jackson once more. He served nine additional months in jail.

So how does someone with such a lengthy criminal record get their hands on a gun, legally? As Kardashian points out, corroborated by a police source, Conley bought the gun online within the last two weeks. The details of the transaction are unclear.

Conley has been charged with capital murder and could face the death penalty.

Britax recalls more than 200,000 car seats

If you own one of the "ClickTight" Britax car seats manufactured between Aug. 1, 2014 and July 29, 2015 then you may be affected by the huge recall which affects over 200,000 car seats.

Britax has determined that the harness adjustor button has been getting stuck in a release position, which allows the straps to become loose when your child moves. These loose straps may not protect your child or keep them contained as needed in case of an accident.

More: Child safety locks: When should you disable?

How can you tell if your seat is included in the recall? Look for the model number under the front corner of the seat, as pictured below.

You can also visit this website to determine if your seat is recalled and to register your car seat to receive the remedy kit.

Prefer the phone? Call Britax customer service at 1-888-427-4829 (option 3) or email Britax.Recall@britax.com.

More: When can kids move to the front seat?

Once you determine your seat is recalled, Britax will mail you a free "remedy kit" within 7-10 business days, which will have a non-toxic food-grade lubricant, a label indicating the correction has been completed and an instruction sheet for correctly applying the lubricant to the harness adjuster button correctly.

While you wait for your remedy kit, should you continue to use your car seat? Britax makes this suggestion:

"If a consumer confirms that their harness straps remain securely tensioned, they can continue to use their car seat until their remedy kit arrives. If an owner cannot get the shoulder straps to remain in place, then Britax recommends against using the car seat until the lubricant has been applied."
