Chrissy Teigen shuts down eating disorder claims with one perfect tweet

During the interview, the quirky supermodel revealed that she likes to "lick off the nacho cheese seasoning and put the chips back in the bag. You still get all the flavor, not all the carbs!"

Of course, the Internet took that as evidence she was not only advocating poor eating habits but also promoting eating disorders. And Teigen is not one to take unwarranted flak lying down.

She shut down the haters with a few perfect, sharp-witted tweets.

She said, "I can't believe I have to address this but my quote about licking the seasoning off doritos [sic] isn't 'promoting eating disorders' it's a hobby."

Everyone knows Teigen is not only a very large advocate for eating, but that she basically doesn't hold back when it comes to her tweets (seriously, you should follow her — it's hilarious). She followed up her first tweet with a stream of tweets that further bolstered her as not only a badass but also my new hero, saying exactly what I usually want to say to most Twitter "idiots."

She said, "I wasn't honestly saying licking the seasoning off doritos [sic] is my idea of diet, you morons." She also said, "It was in the context of 'it's a gross thing i do and i am disgusting but hey it's low carb HA HA' man social media you are the death of me [sic]!"

The supermodel has in the past revealed that she eats fast food several times a week because “there's something about LA, with the drive-thru — it’s too easy.” She has also in the past stated that she needs to work on keeping the figure she has because her family is not naturally thin and they put on weight quickly (I hear ya, sister).

I love, love, love Teigen's no-holds-barred sassy-pants responses. And, Twitter: Just pipe down before Chrissy needs to let you have it again.

Sister Wives premiere sneak peek: Meri & Robyn talk about the divorce (VIDEO)

Though Kody and Meri are only breaking their legal ties to one another so that the family can adopt Robyn's children from her previous marriage, it looks like it's anything but easy on Meri in the video. Robyn comes home to find Meri having an emotional moment and she soon reveals why: Her divorce from Kody is final.

More: Sister Wives: 6 Details about Kody and Robyn's relationship you never knew

In a behind-the-scenes interview, Meri reveals that she does sometimes ponder what she has lost, but then she reminds herself that it's not about her, but the kids. Fans were shocked last season when Meri revealed she was going to sacrifice her legal marriage to Kody so that Robyn could marry him instead, and it's still tough to see how that decision is affecting her today.

Once Meri tells Robyn her news, things get awkward when Meri also reveals that she hasn't told Kody yet. Robyn's reaction is a surprised one, which is clear from the look on her face. But rather than stop there and maybe try and find Kody to tell him about the divorce, the ladies decide to continue a conversation they apparently had the previous day.

More: Sister Wives fans are freaking out over Meri Brown's cryptic tweet

It seems that Robyn asked Meri to be a part of the ceremony when Kody and Robyn get legally wed. Understandably, Meri says she felt like her part in everything would be to just get the divorce and let Kody and Robyn take care of everything else. Who could blame her? After all, each step after that would probably only serve to remind her of what she has lost in her relationship to Kody.

But Meri's bravery shows itself once again when she says that she's now thinking that everything has become a team effort and she feels like she can actually be there. That sounds like a pretty big step and not one that a lot of fans might have guessed she would take.

"I'm realizing now, that while that divorce process was really hard — leading up to it and going through it — I feel like I've dealt with it enough that I can see a bigger picture," Meri says in the video.

At the end of the clip, Meri decides that it's probably time to let Kody know that they are legally divorced, which sends her into laugher at the ridiculousness of it all. It does seem crazy that she has to divorce her husband so that he can marry another woman and adopt her children. Then again, those are the laws of the country we live in and it looks like they've found the best way they can to abide by those laws while following their own beliefs.

"I just have to laugh about it because it just feels so stupid to me," Meri says.

In addition to the legal divorce, the family will also be dealing with beginning the adoption of Robyn's children. The entire process may get more complicated once Robyn announces her pregnancy to the rest of the family. One thing is for sure: It's bound to be another wild season of the show.

More: Khloé Kardashian just had a very scary encounter with ex Lamar Odom

And for a transgender celeb, it's even darker, as shown on Wednesday's episode of I Am Jazz, a new reality show following the life of transgender teen Jazz Jennings.

In a clip from the episode, 14-year-old Jazz is showing her brothers, Sander and Griffin, some of her YouTube videos. Some of the videos have racked up nearly 200,000 views, along with hundreds of comments. The three siblings start reading through the comments left by viewers.

"I'm pretty sure everything there is to know about me has been written online, whether it's in comments or articles or anything," Jazz says to the camera. "I think some of these people know more about me than I know about myself."

The comments start off pretty harmless. One commenter tells Jazz that it isn't "natural" to have to shave her legs as often as she does. The next one is a little more harsh.

"Sad that the devil is tricking you into believing that you are meant to be a girl," Jazz reads aloud from the screen.

More: Jenelle Evans' critics claim her slender frame is due to drug use (PHOTOS)

As she continues down the screen and reads more comments, they get darker and darker.

"This individual is a man," another commenter writes. "There's no such thing as transgender. That word is something made up to make homosexuality sound like something good and better than what it really is."

Sander interjects, "I think we're done reading these."

But Jazz's face falls as she begins to read the next comment: "Someone please shoot it, if not I'm going to kill it myself and make it die a horrible, painful death."

Sander asks, "Is 'it' referring to you?" and Jazz nods.

In an interview, Griffin says to the camera, "I didn't think anybody could be so cruel, to say that they would shoot my sister. That's insane."

Alicia Keys reveals she struggled to accept her femininity

Alicia Keys is no exception. The singer posted an emotional blog post to her Tumblr explaining how street harassment made her want to hide her body and herself — something we've all experienced.

"I started to notice a drastic difference in how men would relate to me if I had on jeans, or if I had on a skirt, or if my hair was done pretty," she wrote. "I could tell the difference, I could feel the animal instinct in them and it scared me. I didn’t want to be talked to in that way, looked at in that way, whistled after, followed. And so I started hiding. I chose the baggy jeans and timbs, I chose the ponytail and hat, I chose no makeup, no bright color lipstick or pretty dresses. I chose to hide. Pieces at a time. Less trouble that way."

And because of her hiding, Keys said, she struggled with others questioning her sexuality.

"I remember feeling that same way when I first started to get recognized as an artist. I had the baggy/braided/tough NY tomboy thing mastered, that was who I was (or who I chose to be) and I felt good there. Then, because of the way I spoke or carried myself, people started calling me gay and hard and I wasn’t gay, but I was hard and although I felt comfortable there, it made me uncomfortable that people were judging me and so slowly I hid that side of myself. I put on dresses and didn’t braid my whole head up, so people could see more of the “real” me, even though at that point I’m sure I was more confused then ever of what the real me was."

More: Alicia Keys is going to be a mom again, baby No. 2 on the way

But Keys, who ties the post to her new song, "28,000 Days," also has an uplifting message for other women who are hiding their true selves.

"You are allowed to be smart," she writes. "You are allowed to be beautiful. You are allowed to be radical and have strong thoughts that others might not agree with. You are allowed to be tough. You are allowed to be sexy. You are allowed to be bold. You are allowed to be shapely. You are allowed to be kind. You are allowed to be yourself!!"

7 Hair removal techniques ranked from worst to best

$

Since there's no point in removing unwanted hair if it's only going to expose skin that we're damaging in the process, it's high time we find out, once and for all, whether we should be shaving, waxing, getting electrolysis treatments — or none of the above.

Hair removal methods

We spoke with Dr. De Fiori, consultant and research dermatologist with the Rosacea Treatment Clinic, and esthetician Felicia Alva of Flutter Beauty, and got the scoop on the best and worst ways we can remove hair on our legs, bodies and faces.

7. Shaving

The easiest, and one of the cheapest, methods we rely on is also one that can leave our skin bumpy, stubbly and even bloody. "Because the razor cuts the hair at an angle, it has a tendency to regrow inward (causing ingrown hairs), particularly if hair is curly," De Fiori said. "The result is bumpy and inflamed, infected skin which will not resolve until the ingrown hair is removed."

More: What happened when I shaved with coconut oil

De Fiori adds that possible complications from shaving can include scarring, breaking fine capillaries when removing the hair and permanent dark marks (hyperpigmentation) after healing has completed. One possible benefit? "The razor itself does have a moderate exfoliating effect, removing dead surface skin cells as you shave, which leaves skin smoother."

6. Hair removal creams

Products like Veet and other hair removal creams are similar to permanent solutions, according to De Fiori, and can dissolve hair at the skin level. Since the hair remains in the follicle and is burned away evenly, there is less chance that ingrown hairs will develop. Sounds great, right? Hold that thought. "The main risk with these products is chemical burns because they are strongly alkaline," De Fiori said. "A burn is more likely if you leave the product on for longer than directed on the packaging. Some hair types are not removed effectively within the directed timeframe for use therefore patients will leave them on longer. By the time the hair is dissolved the skin is also burnt." Know your skin — if it's sensitive, it may be best to stay away from these creams. And, if you do use them, make sure you're removing them thoroughly or you risk developing a "slow burn." Ouch!

5. Electrolysis

De Fiori says electrolysis has pretty much been replaced by lasers, which are "faster and more efficacious." If you're still devoted to this method, be aware that risks include "scarring, infection and hyperpigmentation."

4. Threading

A lot of women are opting to have their eyebrows and/or the little annoying hairs on their faces removed using threading instead of waxing or shaving. De Fiori says this is the method least likely to damage skin, as it is gentler on skin than tweezing, but it has a major downside: It's only feasible for use on small areas of the skin. Unless, I guess, you're one of few women who love torture and can deal with the insane pain of getting your legs threaded (we won't judge you).

3. Waxing

Both De Fiori and Alva are in agreement about waxing, especially when it comes to the eyebrow area: It can cause major skin damage. "Waxing removes a top layer of skin every time you use it," Alva said, adding that the thin, delicate skin around the eyes has no oil glands and requires as gentle a method as possible. "It's OK on the body, but it's too rough on skin in the eye area." Alva recommends tweezing, which gives an esthetician more control over your brows and gives you a fuller, more natural brow.

More: Retinol products and the dangers of use when waxing

De Fiori cautions women with rosacea and other inflammatory skin disorders, such as psoriasis and eczema, to avoid waxing altogether because, although it weakens hair growth, it causes hair growth to actually accelerate during the first three to six months, which increases the need to wax more and can lead to hyperpigmentation.

2. Eflornithine hydrochloride cream

Women who feel they have been plagued by little chin hairs or thick facial hair can now benefit from this effective, but costly, prescription product. After approximately two months of twice daily use, the cream slows down hair growth, according to De Fiori. "Some possible more common side effects are temporary redness, stinging, rash or folliculitis (inflamed, bumpy hair follicles)," De Fiori said. "This is a rather expensive product, however it is FDA approved and reduces the need for other hair removal methods."

1. Laser treatments

Ding, ding, ding — I think we have a winner! De Fiori says that, although older lasers can damage darker skin tones and weren't effective on very light hair, modern lasers can be used to treat an individual's skin and hair type. After a treatment, hair remains in the skin, but will fall out after four to eight days. And how is this for an incredible added bonus: Depending on the laser used, you may even experience some skin rejuvenation due to the formation of new collagen. A method that removes hair and can fight fine lines? Yes, please.

So, let's review: Modern lasers are De Fiori's preferred method, shaving beats out depilatory creams, waxing should only be used on skin types that do not have a history of reacting to it, and a killer, long-lasting combo worth trying on facial hair: threading and eflornithine hydrochloride cream.

Adios, unwanted hair!

The trouble with relationship labels when you're pushing 30 (and up)

$

Unless, of course, we are talking about my favorite pair of relaxed-fit jeans with the permanent guacamole stain on the left leg. I'm nearly 30. "Boyfriend" just isn't a word that makes sense anymore.

I never thought I'd be dating at 30-ish. I was supposed to still be married and raising a brood of adorable, well-behaved children with matching overalls and well-planned chore charts. But life happens, divorce happened, and I found myself launched back into a world of online dating with a cohort of humans that seem just as perplexed as me. You know those first few episodes of The Walking Dead where the survivors realize that all they have is each other? Yeah, dating is like that.

More: Being friends first really is the new law of attraction, says science

And since dating as a real grown-up is eerily reminiscent of The Walking Dead, the term "boyfriend" doesn't exist anymore. I'm not saying it shouldn't. But it doesn't.

I've had "that guy who calls me once every three months because he is trying to have sex tonight." There's also been "chauvinist d-bag who I keep around because he can occasionally be funny." I've spent several months with a "38-year-old who doesn't like labels because commitment is scary." And let us not forget "super fun dance partner who — hey, what the hell, is that a wedding ring?!"

I've dated a ton, and the reality is that even with all the activities and all my expended energy, I still haven't had a "boyfriend" since I was 22 and my ex asked me to marry him.

More: New study reveals how to like your partner a lot better

Depressing? Only on a Saturday night when all I can find on HGTV is an Island Hunters marathon.

As I've thought about the new dating landscape, I've determined that my fearless cohort doesn't readily use the word "boyfriend" because it's not very functional anymore. Adults don't need to claim the object of their affection by using a label straight from the halls of high school. We don't need to lay claim to anything at all. If, in the course of a million online dates, we decide that there's someone worth spending time with — we should just go for it.

We should stipulate which expectations are important to us when the relationship turns exclusive, and stick to those agreements. Because we're g-d grownups. It's OK to shut down the games and labels that keep us acting like high school kids even though we have mortgages and jobs with retirement plans.

When we find that there is a person worthy of the label "boyfriend," we shouldn't land that beloved person in the purgatory of boyfriend-hood. Instead, we need to ask ourselves if he is a man worth forging a partnership with, and just go for it.

Coronation Street signs first Down's syndrome actor

Liam will arrive on the cobbles as Alex, nephew of Roy Cropper’s new love interest Cathy Matthews (played by Melanie Hill), later this year. The actor, who used to be part of the Mind The Gap theatre group, said he would jump at the chance to be on ITV — although he had his sights set on a rival soap: “I would love to be on ITV, maybe playing a Dingle on Emmerdale!”

Mind The Gap is England's largest learning-disabled theatre group. Based in West Yorkshire, the award-winning company aims to bring equal opportunities to actors with learning disabilities and produce work that challenges audiences to "think differently."

More: Newborn photos of baby with Down's Syndrome go viral for the sweetest reason

The announcement was made during a “Corrie Press Day” and posted on the official Coronation Street Twitter account: “Cathy’s nephew Alex to be played by Liam Bairstow who was cast during ITV’s #breakingthroughtalent #CorriePressDay.”

Corrie producer Stuart Blackburn told Digital Spy: “We ran a workshop called Breaking Through a while ago, which was for actors with disabilities. It was recognising that they get so few auditions, and actually we found a young guy there called Liam Bairstow, an actor with Down's syndrome.

“It's not some politically correct thing,” he stressed. “We actually found there a really great actor with a wonderful sense of timing. The cast have been really enjoying working with him.”

Whatever part political correctness has played in the decision it’s a good one. Fans on Twitter praised the channel for its “exciting new approach to casting” and for bringing “diversity” to the long-running soap.

It could be argued that EastEnders has always led the way when it comes to diversity in British soaps, featuring several major characters of different ethnicities and receiving praise for its portrayal of characters with disabilities, including Janet, daughter of Billy and Honey Mitchell, who was played by a child actor with Down’s syndrome. In 1987 EastEnders was responsible for screening the first ever gay kiss in a U.K. soap. It has also featured a young Asian struggling with his sexuality and domestic violence in a mixed-race lesbian relationship.

Earlier this year EastEnders writer Tony Jordan teamed up with actors Jimmy Akingbola and Fraser Ayres to help set up a new production company aimed at promoting diversity both on screen and behind the scenes.

“The issue with diversity in the industry is not a lack of talent, just a lack of avenues for that talent to be reached," said Jordan. "We are delighted to provide creative backing to TriForce Productions, to help broadcasters access that talent and engage their audiences with programming that better reflects our contemporary culture.”

However Coronation Street isn't far behind its BBC counterpart when it comes to diversity. It was the first soap to introduce a transgender character (Hayley Cropper in 1998), although she was played by a cisgender actor. Nonetheless Julie Hesmondhalgh’s portrayal of Hayley — including her trip to get gender-reassignment surgery and her frustration that she had insufficient legal status as a transgender person and so initially couldn’t marry Roy — helped spark a national debate that led to the 2004 Gender Recognition Act, a law that changed the lives of trans people by granting them full legal status.

How to upgrade from 'girl' push-ups to full push-ups

Perfect your push-up for Pinterest

Working the progression

If you're brand new to strength training, start with the wall push-up and work your way through all six progressions, as described. If, however, you're comfortable with knee push-ups, skip the wall push-up and start with the incline push-up before continuing through the progression.

Note: All proper forms are demonstrated below!

Week 1: Perform three sets of 10-12 wall push-ups, allowing one minute of recovery between sets. Do this on three nonconsecutive days (for instance, Monday, Wednesday, Friday).

Week 2: Perform three sets of 10-12 incline push-ups, using a bench or step that's at least 24-inches off the ground. Allow one minute of recovery between sets. Do this on three nonconsecutive days.

Week 3: Perform two sets of 8-10 incline push-ups using a bench or step that's between 12 and 24 inches off the ground. Allow one minute of recovery between sets. Then, perform as many negative push-ups as you can, lowering yourself as slowly as you can on each push-up. Do this on three nonconsecutive days.

Week 4: Perform one set of 8-10 incline push-ups using a bench or step that's 12 to 24 inches off the ground. Perform one set of 8-10 negative push-ups, lowering yourself to the ground as slowly as possible through the full range of motion. Perform one set of four to six lower-and-hold push-ups, holding each push-up as long as you can with your elbows bent at 90 degrees. Allow two minutes of rest between sets. Do this on three nonconsecutive days.

Week 5: Perform two sets of 8-10 lower-and-hold push-ups, holding each push-up in the lowest position for three to five seconds. Rest two minutes between sets, then rest three minutes before performing one set of positive push-ups, doing as many as you can while maintaining a tight core and good form. Do this on three nonconsecutive days.

Week 6: Perform two sets of 6-10 positive push-ups, focusing on form as you press yourself up. Allow two minutes of rest between sets. Finish with one set of full push-ups, doing as many as you can (even if it's just one!), focusing on good form through the downward and upward phases. Do this on three nonconsecutive days.

Week 7 and 8: By now you should be able to do at least one set of "guy" push-ups, even if you can only do four or five at a time. Over the next two weeks, challenge yourself to do three sets, with one minute of rest between sets. Set out to simply do as many as you can with good form for each set.

More: 10 Push-up variations worth trying

1. Wall push-up

Wall pushup

Stand a few feet away from the wall and place your hands flat on the wall directly in front of your chest, roughly shoulder-width apart. Lean forward and tighten your core, keeping your body straight from head to heel. Bend your elbows and lower your chest toward the wall, reversing the motion when your elbows bend slightly more than 90 degrees.

2. Incline push-up

Incline pushup

The incline push-up is performed just like the wall push-up, but this time you're placing your hands on a sturdy, raised surface, such as a bench or the back of a couch. As you get stronger, you can choose a platform that's closer to the ground. The goal is to keep your body as tight and straight as possible as you do the exercise — preventing your butt from sagging or tilting up toward the ceiling. Your chest doesn't need to touch the platform you're using, but it should come within an inch or two of touching down.

3. Negatives

Negatives

When you think about push-ups, you probably think the "up" part of the push-up is the hardest part, right? And while that is the part where you apply force to press yourself back to start, the downward — or negative — phase of the push-up is actually the part that causes greater muscle damage (which in this context is a good thing) and builds strength.

This is because the downward phase requires more muscle control — your muscles have to work harder to support you as you lower yourself toward the floor. So, if you train the negative portion of an exercise, it may feel easier, but it pays off dividends when it comes to strength building. (Negatives are also a popular exercise when working your way to a full pull-up.)

The trick is doing negative push-ups as slowly as possible while maintaining good form. Simply start in a high push-up position with your core tight and body straight from heels to head. As slowly and with as much control as possible, lower yourself all the way to the floor. Aim for each negative push-up to take at least four to five seconds.

More: The power ab workout you can do in 10 minutes

4. Lower-and-hold push-ups

Lower and hold

Also referred to as a "Chaturanga push-up," the lower-and-hold will help build strength during the negative phase of the push-up, while also forcing you to isometrically build strength at the bottom point of your push-up. This bottom point represents the transition from the negative to positive phases, which can be particularly tricky to navigate when you're learning to master a push-up.

Simply start in a full push-up position, then bend your elbows and lower yourself until your elbows are bent slightly further than 90 degrees (your chest should be a few inches from the floor). Hold this position for three to five seconds before lowering the rest of the way.

As you get stronger, you might want to play with the transition point — hold at the low spot for one second, then bend your elbows a hair more, then press through your palms and raise yourself an inch. Do this two or three times before starting over.

5. Positives

Positives

Positives are the exact opposite of negatives. You're now training yourself to press yourself back up to a high push-up position while maintaining good form. You needn't do these slowly! Simply start in a prone position on the floor — your palms slightly wider than your shoulders and your toes planted to the ground. Tighten your core and press yourself up while maintaining a tight core, preventing your back from swaying or your hips from pointing upward.

6. Push-up

Pushup

You're officially ready to combine your negatives and positives. Start in a high push-up position, breathe in and tighten your core before lowering yourself toward the floor. When your chest is a few inches from touching down, exhale and press yourself back up to start. Focus on form first! Even if you can only do one with good form, you're well on your way to becoming a push-up queen.

EXCLUSIVE: See which new track Luke Bryan likens to The Wallflowers

So, in celebration of Bryan's new album, Kill the Lights, we found seven new reasons to fangirl out — including an exclusive clip of the crooner opening up about one of his new tracks, "Just Over."

1. He's got nothing but love for Miranda and Blake

We're all still reeling from the recent string of high-profile heartbreaks in country music, and Bryan is no exception. Proving just how genuine of a guy he is, though, he had this to say about Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton's split: "In my life, I've dealt with a lot of permanent loss where you know you can't get people back, and I just always pray — certainly in Blake and Miranda's case — that they'll be happy, you know, however, whatever shakes out."

2. He channeled his inner Barry White on Jimmy Fallon

Is it hot in here, or is it just Luke Bryan? Listening to him perform "Strip It Down" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon has us ready to, well, strip it down. With lyrics like "Let it out, tell me right now/Everything I need in them white cotton sheets/Dirty dance me slow in the summertime heat/Feel my belt turn loose from these old blue jeans," this sultry single is the perfect track for winding down the summer.

3. He Smule'd with Jason Derulo

What happens when the reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year joins forces with R&B star Jason Derulo? Apparently, magic. Bryan looped Derulo in for a duet of the latter's single "Want to Want Me" via the highly addictive karaoke app Smule. And, you know what? Their Smule made us smile. Even when Bryan couldn't quite hit the high notes, it made him all the more endearing. We particularly like the way he called Derulo's range "filthy" — that's a good thing, y'all.

4. He gushed over his wife

Despite the fact that we <del>not so</del> secretly wish he was hitched to us, hearing Bryan get sentimental about his bride, Caroline Boyer, kind of makes us go weak in the knees. Talking to Entertainment Tonight about the track "To the Moon and Back," Bryan confessed, "I played it for my wife and I had butterflies, her hearing it for the first time, because it was my attempt through song telling her how much she means to me." Say it with us — aw!

5. He's a swooner over Lady Liberty, too

God love a man who loves the good ol' U.S. of A. Bryan is proud to be an American, and that couldn't have been clearer than when he let his patriotism get the best of him on Tuesday. Sharing a picture of the Statue of Liberty, Bryan tweeted, "Spiritual," and, moments later, "Swear I couldn't not cry. Amazing feeling."

6. He serenaded Lionel Richie (yes, Lionel Richie)

As part of the social media storm to promote his new album, Bryan teamed up with Target on a project called #LukeBox, whereby fans could request a personalized song from the country superstar. As you might expect, there was no shortage of submissions — including the celebrity kind! In response to his CMT Artists of the Year duet partner Lionel Richie, Bryan churned out some lyrics about "sweatin' just thinkin' about duetin'" with the iconic entertainer-slash-country-fan.

7. And, finally, he revealed he's a Jakob Dylan fan

Anyone who can reference The Wallflowers in casual conversation is a winner in our book. Check out this exclusive clip of Bryan talking about his new track, "Just Over"!

  • NBC: Zero of four

But are we really surprised by this? According to a recent study by The Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film in 2014, titled "Boxed In," 40 percent of all speaking characters and 40 percent of all major characters (on broadcast networks, cable and Netflix programs) were female in 2013-2014 — a 1 percent decrease from 2012-2013, but a 3 percent increase from 1997-98. Also according to this report, the programs airing on ABC featured the highest percentage of female characters (44 percent), followed by CBS (42 percent), Fox (41 percent), The CW (40 percent) and NBC (39 percent).

As for race, 77 percent of female characters were white, 13 percent were African American, 4 percent were Latina, 4 percent were Asian and 2 percent were of some other race or ethnicity.

How do these stats compare to this year's shows? Based on the calendars above, here's how they rank:

  • The CW leads the charge, with 50 percent of their premieres featuring a female protagonist. Compared to last year, looks like this has increased by 10 percent.
  • ABC comes in second with 36 percent — decreasing by 8 percent, compared to the aforementioned 44 percent.
  • Then CBS with 33 percent — decreasing by 9 percent.
  • NBC has 23 percent — decreasing by 16 percent.
  • Lastly, Fox rounds out the list at 21 percent — a decrease of 20 percent.
Here's hoping next year's TV lineup will have more strong, female leads — and diverse ones at that!

These three smoothie recipes are full of healthy, natural ingredients that are good for your body. Each drink has its own unusual ingredients such as aloe juice, hemp seeds or flavored coconut water. Believe it or not, these little add-ins make these drinks taste even better. Use up any produce you have on hand and blend your way to health.

1. Absolutely terrifying

A series of massive explosions in Tianjin, China, left 500 people injured and 44 dead yesterday. The explosions reportedly took place at a warehouse full of "hazardous goods," though investigators have yet to name an official cause. Dozens of people are still missing and at least 60 of those injured are in critical condition. Our hearts go out to the people of Tianjian as they bounce back from this awful tragedy. — CNN

2. A devastating diagnosis

Former President Jimmy Carter has announced that he has cancer. He didn't say what kind of cancer he has, but did reveal that it's advanced and that he had a mass removed from his liver earlier this month. The 90-year-old said he will rearrange his schedule to undergo treatment. President Obama released a statement saying, "Jimmy, you're as resilient as they come, and along with the rest of America, we are rooting for you." Best of luck to Carter and his family. — NBC News

3. Not lovin' it

McDonald's plans to close 59 locations as the company continues to be plagued by poor sales. McDonald's currently has 14,350 U.S. locations — basically one on every corner — but their same store-sales have been in decline for seven straight quarters. They've tried a number of marketing campaigns to combat their slumping sales, but none seem to be working. Diners appear to be more interested in fast-casual restaurants like Chipotle, where they can get higher quality food for around the same price and level of convenience. — Bloomberg

4. California is throwing shade at this whole drought situation

Yesterday, California began turning their reservoirs into what look like the world's largest ball pits. What's actually going on is they're using 96 million black plastic balls to preserve the state's water supply. The "shade balls" float atop the water and protect it from algae growth while simultaneously slowing the rate of evaporation. The balls do not emit chemicals into the water and they look super cool, so it's a win-win that will help California as they struggle to recover from one of the worst droughts in the state's history. — The New York Times

5. Do you want to build a snowman sand castle?

The director of Disney's Frozen, Chris Buck, says he thinks Anna and Elsa are related to Tarzan. The theory first became popular among fans during a Reddit AMA with Frozen's co-director, in which she revealed that Anna and Elsa's parents did not die in the film's shipwreck, but instead washed up on an island somewhere and had a baby. In a recent interview with MTV, Buck confirmed the theory, saying, "In my little head, Anna and Elsa's brother is Tarzan." So, there you go. Now you don't have to explain death at the hands of a turbulent sea to your kids. You can just say they washed up on a beach and had a baby. Oh, and then got eaten by a leopard. Darn. — Entertainment Weekly

6. Walk like an Egyptian

A British archaeologist thinks he's located the lost tomb of Egyptian Queen Nefertiti. Nefertiti ruled Egypt around 1350 BC and the location of her tomb has always been the subject of speculation. Now, through studying scans of King Tut's tomb, Nicholas Reeves believes he's solved the mystery. Apparently King Tut's tomb is really tiny for a king — something that's always perplexed archaeologists — and Reeves thinks that's because it's actually an antechamber leading to the queen's tomb, which is hidden behind the walls. If he's right, it would be a huge discovery. My inner nerd almost can't handle it. — NPR

Big Brother fans hurl insults at Steve for ridiculous eviction decisions

The very surprising eviction

The first eviction came quickly on the double eviction episode of Big Brother. After all of Becky's plans and all the smack talk this week, everyone thought that Vanessa would finally be walking out the door. Surprise! The house unanimously voted out Shelli. If #BB17 fans were shocked at that, they were even more shocked at what happened next.

Big Brother Steve wins HOH

The Head of Household competition was one of those where the houseguests had to remember small details of videos they watched throughout the week and then answer true or false. It didn't take long for Steve to win! Fans were shocked but were rooting for him, and everyone was sure that he would put up Becky and Vanessa. Of course he would, right?

Steve's extremely bad decisions may bite him in the behind

Wrong! Steve surprised everyone and put up Meg and Jackie. Twitter was on fire with comments from fans bashing Steve for his choices. They called him every name in the book. And everyone hoped that he had a big backdoor plan.

Johnny Mac won the veto and speculation remained. Would he use it on someone and let Steve put a plan in place to backdoor possibly Vanessa or Becky? Johnny Mac chose to keep the veto and let the nominations stay the same, which seemed to shock Steve. Steve mumbled an apology to both Meg and Jackie, said something along the lines of "I need a minute" and then proceeded to walk off-camera.

The same things the rest of us think about, apparently. Just ask Tyra Banks.

The America's Next Top Model host did a recent Q&A with The New York Times and revealed that when she met Hillary years ago, they didn't talk politics at all.

"Oh, my God, she was so relaxed and so cool. We talked about cellulite and she was like: 'Yeah, I’ve got cellulite, and I look in the mirror, and I don’t have any clothes on, and I don’t like everything I see,'" 41-year-old Tyra told the paper. "It was that kind of conversation."

More: Ellen DeGeneres, Hillary Clinton reach out to gay teen on Facebook

Hils was a guest on The Tyra Banks Show all the way back in 2008, where the two talked about Hillary meeting her former president hubby, Bill Clinton, at Yale Law School.

And the former secretary of state and New York senator dished on forgiving Bill after his highly publicized affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

"I really had to dig down deep and think hard about what was right for me and what was right for my family," Hillary said. "And I never doubted Bill's love for me, ever. And I never doubted my faith and my commitment to our daughter and extended family. But I had to decide what I had to do. And I think it's so important to be able to hear yourself at a moment when it's hard."

That revealing interview really stuck with Tyra, it turns out. She told The New York Times, "I actually like Hillary personally. She was just so free-flowing."

Teen Mom 2's Leah Messer's battle with drug addiction alarms fans

It's nearly impossible for MTV to keep up with its stars' rapid changes in relationship status. Since filming for the current season of Teen Mom 2 ended, Jenelle Evans has called off her engagement, put a ring back on her finger and then promptly kicked Nathan Griffith to the curb!

Jenelle is by no means the only reality star struggling with instability — Leah Messer has also dealt with her fair share of relationship issues, not to mention poor mental health. Although she admitted to battling depression during tonight's episode of Teen Mom 2, Leah didn't seem willing to acknowledge the elephant in the room: her rumored drug addiction.

Jeremy Calvert knows what he's talking about

Jeremy may not be always be a super-likable guy, but he's at least able to offer a few valuable insights about Leah's current issues. He brings up two topics Leah doesn't care to chat about: addiction and divorce. He also claims that it is not possible for Leah to love her husband until she loves herself. Still in denial, Leah insists that she does, in fact, love herself, but viewers know better. This gal clearly has some major self-esteem issues — and they're not going away until she gets help.

Drug addiction?

In one exasperating scene, Leah tells a friend that she thinks she's done everything she needs to do to turn her life around. That seems hard to believe, because Leah is looking and behaving worse than ever. Leah might think she's making plenty of progress, but her mere appearance suggests otherwise. The reality star looks awful — and fans are willing to bet that the problem isn't simply a poor night's sleep.

Not only has she managed to ditch her usual nail salons, Leah appears to have made progress since filming for Teen Mom 2 wrapped. According to the rumors that took over social media earlier this summer, the reality star finally decided to address her problems and visit rehab. Let's just hope there's some truth to these rumors and that, for the sake of her poor kids, she's managed to get the help she so desperately needs.

Why unschooling is the next wave of home-based education for kids

$
0
0

It's an experience that is available to families who choose to forego more structured forms of education for the opportunity to unschool their children. When I first heard about unschooling, I felt a little suspicious of the practice. How could children meet their educational needs if they were truly self-directed in their learning? Wouldn't they just sit around and watch television all day?

More: Parents punish kids by making them watch TV

Unschooling and attachment parenting coach Laurie Couture is adamant that the exact opposite occurs when children are truly free to explore their educational interests. She unschooled her son through his adolescence and all the way to his high school graduation, and she observed him reap incredible benefits from his nontraditional education. "There were few 'typical' days in our adventurous family," she says. "As a single, working mom I built my career around my son and being able to open the world up to him." Their weeks consisted of involvement in home-school groups, exploring natural habitats and involving themselves in the neighborhood through art, speaking engagements, volunteering and spending time with extended family.

According to The Natural Child Project, Couture nailed the unschooling trend with the style of her son's education. "Unschooling is a unique opportunity for each family to do whatever makes sense for the growth and development of their children," the organization explains. "If we have a reason for using curriculum and traditional school materials, then we use them." Any curriculum used in unschooling, however, is a supplement to the learning experiences that children and their families undertake on a daily basis to foster a lifelong love of learning and fascination with the world.

More: Things this extravagantly rich kid has that I want

The constant stream of field trips and fun experiences certainly sound fun, but Couture states that they also served as a foundation for her son's life and future career. In fact, she sees unschooling as an effective way to set a child on course for the career he or she will want as an adult. "My son ran his own business starting at the age of 12 and began his music career at the age of 14. He had media interviews, he joined me for public speaking gigs around the country and he recorded music," Couture says. She believes that he would have missed out on these creative career opportunities if he had been pigeonholed into a one-size-fits-all public education. "He was safe from the bullying of public schools that especially target boys for negativity, labels and failure. The vibrant and dynamic life experience my son has had would have been impossible in the traditional public school system," she says.

More: Parents outraged over Princess Leia action figure

But what about college, and what about a child losing interest in his or her own education? Couture states that if a parent undertakes unschooling effectively, these questions answer themselves. "When a child follows his own passions and interests, there is no need to force him to stay engaged in his learning," she says. "Learning happens naturally." She also added that her son's unschooling perspective helped him compete and earn college scholarships for his continuing education.

If you want to learn more about this interesting educational perspective, Couture suggests that parents check out Life Learning Magazine for a crash course in unschooling and self-directed learning.

Why men are turned off by powerful women — experts weigh in

$
0
0

He grew quiet. A little too quiet. For the rest of our conversation, I pretended that the tense moment of silence had only existed in my own mind. Within a week, however, he had all but ended our fledgling relationship.

Although I won't ever know the whole deal with this particular guy, the experience made me wonder if some men are freaked out by powerful and successful women. To be clear, I don't feel all that successful most of the time — but neither did I make up my date's awkward reaction to my statement of personal goals and career aspirations. So, is this really something we have to contend with? Goals, accolades and — gasp — personal opinions as man-repellent?

Relationship coach Hunt Ethridge says that this dynamic is an unfortunate reality for some women. "I just had a special session at Saks Fifth Avenue where these beautiful, well-dressed, powerful and awesome women were all single and complaining about how difficult it was for them to get a date," Ethridge explained. "One woman even shared a story that a man she liked finally asked her out on a date only to tell her he couldn't date her because he'd be too scared to lose her."

The evidence that men often shy away from successful women extends beyond dating anecdotes, though. Psychotherapist Ellen Boykin explains that this dynamic is a common one that she sees in her practice, and our society in general. "The truth is that men are often not afraid of her achievements or confidence, but how that influences his sense of self in the relationship," she explained. According to Boykin, many men struggle to feel necessary to their wives or girlfriends, and this feeling of deficiency is pronounced when a successful woman ostensibly doesn't need a man to provide for her. "They just don't know what their role is supposed to be."

Of course, most women balk at such a statement. We don't want a man to provide for us monetarily. We want a man who is an emotionally available partner, and willing to weather life's storms with encouragement and love. "Unfortunately, many men are not raised to see their self-worth in those traits first," Boykin said. "The intimidation is really about self-doubt and uncertainty about their role."

Well, that's distressing. Thankfully, Ethridge states that all is not lost for confident and successful women. The trick is to grow more approachable for that first meeting, in order to give a prospective date a chance to feel encouraged and confident, too. "By no means do I suggest that women dim their stars," Ethridge said. "But there are ways to learn to be approachable." First, he tells women to forego handshakes on a date, and instead greet their dates with a peck on the cheek. "Are your arms crossed? Uncross them. Meet eyes, smile, look away and look back." It's all simple, really, and doesn't diminish your power or success — and it might just make you a little more approachable for the guys with fragile male egos.
