Lisa Vanderpump sends heartfelt message to Kim Richards

More: Kim Richards' family is reportedly forcing her to be hospitalized

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alumna has been facing a myriad of legal troubles after she was accused of shoplifting more than 100 items, amounting to over $600 worth of products, from a Target near Los Angeles. She was also reportedly forced by her family to undergo a brief hospitalization, though no sources have been willing to say exactly why she needed medical care.

And now, Richards has another public supporter: former Real Housewives costar Lisa Vanderpump.

The two aren't filming together anymore and Vanderpump said they haven't been in touch during Richards' recent troubles. But she still sends her best wishes to her fellow reality star and said there's a good reason she hasn't reached out.

More: Kim Richards talks smack about Lisa Rinna, but it doesn't make sense

"It's a shame. I've been saddened by that and it's really not my place to comment on that now," she told reporters during Bella New York magazine's annual White Party. "Obviously, she's a friend and not family but it's out there… it saddens me to see her going in this direction."

She continued, "I think she has really good support but now her support needs to really step in and something needs to be done."

As for why she hasn't yet reached out to Richards, Vanderpump said she remains in "constant contact" with Richards' sister and costar, Kyle Richards, but that she doesn't consider it her place to impose.

"I haven't [reached out] because I feel there are people a lot closer to her than I am," Vanderpump said. "I send her well wishes and hope she's OK."

Richards is set to have her first court appearance later this month.

RHOC's Vicki Gunvalson, Shannon Beador are reality TV's most important friendship

Given how close Vicki and Shannon have seemed throughout the entirety of their time together on The Real Housewives of Orange County, it's hard to believe that they recently went through a rough patch. However, during tonight's episode of RHOC, the gals remained the best of friends, even when it meant trashing nearly every other RHOC cast member. Hey, at least they have each other!

More: Meghan Edmonds makes bold claims about Vicki Gunvalson's love life

Vicki and Shannon friends

Vicki manages to keep her mouth shut

Typically, when a Housewife shares a big secret about her love life, that revelation quickly hits the tabloids, or, at least, the Real Housewives rumor mill. Amazingly enough, Vicki actually was considerate enough to keep quiet about Shannon's issues with her marriage. In the Real Housewives world, this is an extraordinary accomplishment. It's a good thing Shannon didn't choose Tamra as her confidant, because her secret would already be old news.

More: Shannon Beador opens up about rewatching her husband's affair

Gratitude from Shannon

The ability to keep a secret is not exactly common on RHOC, but expressing gratitude for good friends is, if possible, even more rare. In a surprisingly humble move, Shannon decided to set the friendship bar high by telling Vicki that she truly appreciates her support.

Shannon's friendship

Whooping it up

Believe it or not, it's not always about drama on RHOC. Sometimes, the Housewives just want to let loose and have fun. Some of the cast members don't seem to know how to have a good time, but this is certainly not the case for Vicki and Shannon. The two take great pride in their ability to "whoop it up," especially when they're on vacation. These lighthearted moments are some of the best on The Real Housewives of Orange County.

More: Meghan Edmonds addresses Shannon Beador's negative comments

Twitter-approved friendship

Not everybody likes Vicki and Shannon, but few RHOC fans can deny that their friendship is genuine. And that's saying something — plenty of other Housewives "friends" have been accused of secretly hating one another but pretending otherwise. Vicki and Shannon's Twitter fans are relieved to see that at least one set of Housewives knows what real friendship means.

Sadly, Vicki and Shannon's seemingly genuine friendship may be at a crossroads. The preview for next week's episode of RHOC indicates that there could be plenty of drama in this dynamic duo's future. Let's hope they are able to get past their differences and get their friendship back on track!

Booster seats should be binned shocking video tells parents (WATCH)

Basically there's no comparison. During the crash test, the dummy on the booster cushion slips free of the seat belt and hits its head on the side of the car. Meanwhile the dummy in the high back seat stays far more upright.

More: Mobile phone rules for kids that will keep them safe and you sane

The footage was filmed at Britax's testing facility in Hampshire and has been released as part of a wider campaign to persuade parents to get rid of any cushion-style booster seats they might have.

"After watching this footage, parents will think twice when choosing a Group 2-3 car seat as it is incredibly haunting and really demonstrates the importance of deep protective side wings, head support and seat belt guides to ensure that seat belts are correctly positioned and fitted," said Mark Bennett, safety expert at Britax. "We are calling for all parents using booster cushions to switch to a high back booster option and help us further spread the word about the inadequate protection these cushions provide — it could save precious lives this summer!"

Good Egg Safety, which provides safety advice for families in the U.K., supports the "Bin the Booster" campaign. Jan James, its CEO, said: "We welcome this powerful footage from Britax which really drives home the dangers of booster cushions. What makes this so poignant is the fact that when using these, parents are at least trying to protect their children by lifting them up to ensure a better fit of seat belt, not realising that their child is still in significant danger in an impact. The nerves in the neck don’t stretch well and a collision which throws the head forward with the force demonstrated here could potentially result in catastrophic injuries to their child as a result. Good Egg Safety highly recommends the use of a high back booster for that extra vital protection. As witnessed here; it will really make the difference."

The law on child car seats

  • Children must normally use a child car seat until they're 12 years old or 135 centimetres tall, whichever comes first.
  • Only EU-approved child car seats can be used in the U.K. These have a label showing a capital "E" in a circle.
  • Car seats may be height-based or weight-based.
  • Height-based car seats must be rear-facing until the child is over 15 months old, at which point they can use a forward-facing car seat.
  • Weight-based car seats must be rear-facing until the child weighs over 9 kilograms.
  • Children can use booster cushions when they weigh more than 22 kilograms.

Booster cushions are still sold because it's not a requirement under current EU safety standards to conduct tests for side collisions on Group 2-3 seats. However, after watching this video, how many parents will be willing to take the risk?

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Once Upon a Time cast talks Frozen's Elsa and overcoming fear

More: OUAT casts Ursula: 7 Reasons Merrin Dungey is a perfect choice

The first half of Once Upon a Time's fourth season took us on a journey with the characters from Frozen, bringing Elsa, Anna, Kristoff and the Snow Queen to the small screen and exciting us in the process. But even with the chilly aspect of Frozen's title and the predicament of its lead character, OUAT had us feeling warm with its exploration of Elsa's fears and how those fears impacted the now-iconic and much-loved character.

In the exclusive video above, Elsa's Once Upon a Time portrayer, Georgina Haig, talks about the parts of Elsa that really resonated with viewers.

"The main struggle of Elsa's is that she's afraid of who she is and that she can't accept who she is, and she feels like she doesn't fit in and that she's isolated from the world around her. I think that's a feeling a lot of people can identify with," she says, noting that Elsa's fear is perhaps the most unique "villain" the show has seen thus far.

More: Once Upon a Time Season 5: A new king is set to rule

"The villain isn't a witch or a wizard or a monster; it's an emotion — it's the emotion of fear that's the villain, and that's a new thing," she explained.

Costar Jennifer Morrison, who plays Emma Swan, was quick to sing Haig's praises, saying she did "an amazing job of taking an iconic character... and infusing that with life and putting her own personality into it, but really staying true to what the character was in the movie."

More: Jennifer Morrison admits life as an actress isn't always a fairy tale

If all of this praise and talk of isolation and not fitting in doesn't hit you right in the emotions, then perhaps your heart is frozen, and revisiting Once Upon a Time's Frozen foray might be just the remedy for unfreezing it.

Once Upon a Time Season 4 is available on DVD and Blu-ray on Aug. 18.

More: Cutting ties with the Duggar family doesn't come cheap

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Jessa posted a picture on Instagram with the words, "It is appointed unto men once they die, but after this the judgement [sic] - Hebrews 9:27."

She accompanied the post with a very lengthy caption, part of which reads, "...'You must believe or be damned,' saith the Bible. And hark, the threat of God is as unchangeable as God himself. And when a thousand years of hell's torment shall have passed away, who shall look on heaven and shall see written in letters of burning fire, 'He that believeth not, shall be damned!' 'But Lord, I am damned.' Nevertheless it says 'shall be,' 'still,' until a million ages have rolled away and you are exhausted by your pains and agonies. You shall turn up your eyes and still see, 'SHALL BE DAMNED.'"

The post has not received a warm reception from her followers.

There are those who completely disagree with her message, with comments including, "That's your opinion Jessa not everyone needs to have the same beliefs as you. Religion is a choice some of us choose to believe in other things...," "humans created God, not the other way around. Think about it," and "religion is control. That's all it is."

But there are also those fans who think Jessa is trying to spread fear when she should be reaching out and spreading love — and they believe that is the true message of the Bible.

One fan wrote, "It's His kindness that leads us to repentance So if you're trying to reach out to people and spread the message of salvation, it's time to start loving people as they are and letting God come and transform their lives instead of trying to 'frighten' them away from hell.@jessaseewald."

Other fans agreed, with one writing that Jessa should not be telling people they'll be damned, but rather she should show everyone love.

The person wrote, "@jessaseewald as much as this is true there is so much more to God then [sic] this!! God is not about believe and go to heaven or don't believe and 'be damned'. The Bible says the GOODNESS of God brings people to repentance. We need to be showing the world LOVE not telling them they will be 'damned'. Gods [sic] love is so amazing and powerful! He's got such a huge heart for all of his kids!! Please remember that we need to be posting LOVE!! And not scaring people into heaven but leading them by His grace and Love!"

Face Off judges give 9 teasers for the 100th episode wedding challenge

"It's really great. Our models are actually not our normal models," Face Off judge Ve Neill explained. "They're actually couples that are getting married. And each one will be in themed makeup. We have a small audience with us, and it's going to be, like, the mothers and fathers, and so they'll be there. And McKenzie was ordained as a minister, so McKenzie is actually going to marry these couples on the show in makeup. It's going to be really cool. It's really cool."

More: Q-and-A with Face Off's McKenzie Westmore on staying fit

And don't expect fairies and pretty things like I did initially.

"It wasn't at all wedding cake topper classic," judge Neville Page explained. He added, "Each of the couples' personalities came through in all of the choices. So they got to work specifically with a makeup artist and what it is that they wanted their wedding to be like and the character they wanted to be."

Westmore described the makeup as, "Unbelievable, not what you would think. Full-on creatures."

Westmore herself had the honor of officiating all seven of the couples' wedding ceremonies. She explained she couldn't get over how impactful her role was as a minister.

"It struck me, and it got me emotional," Westmore admitted.

She added, "One of the couples that was standing in front of me, she started to cry, and the blue makeup is just streaming down her cheeks, and that's when it clicked for me, and I was like, 'OK, snap out of it yourself, this is about them. It's not about you.' And just making that eye contact with her and seeing the tears streaming, it just like completely brought me back to, wow, this is what it's about. It's about these seven couples, and here we go!"

They were also all big fans of the show going into the episode, which made the ceremonies all the more meaningful.

More: Face Off: Jaws drop during shocking double elimination

"They're all beautiful couples. You'll see," Westmore said. "They're gorgeous couples, but they're not like our typical Face Off models, so they're fans of the show and that's what was like, even cool, because I got to sit at the judges' table and officiate, sign their legal documents, which was even trippier to me."

As for Westmore, who is currently planning her own wedding, she said there won't be any surprise creature elements when she ties the knot this October. She and her soon-to-be husband are going full-on traditional at a vineyard. And, guys, I got a sneak peek at her dress! Let me just tell you, it's absolutely stunning and gorgeous!

Face Off Season 9

Image: Syfy

Judge Glenn Hetrick said the most exciting part of the 100th episode was the involvement of the family members.

"My favorite thing about it was they had family members since they were getting married. We've never done this before. So we had people on stage as our models, and then right in front of them as an audience were their families to witness the weddings," Hetrick explained. "So that was another entire dimension to the show that I've never experienced where the people modeling the makeups, because they were getting married, had families sitting right in front of them and reacting to them in these makeups, and that was so great."

"I'm sure their relatives and stuff have no idea what's going to be happening to them," Neill added.

"The thing I recall most vividly is, what an honor that something that I'm involved in, that our team has put together here, what an honor that the Face Off producers have created something that means so much to some of our core audience that they would make a commitment like getting married on the show," Hetrick said.

The Fosters sacrificed Callie's future to teach a lesson about right & wrong

$
0
0

The feeling that you have nothing left to lose is weirdly freeing as anyone who has ever found themselves in such a situation can attest. In that light, Callie and Brandon indulging in the fantasy that they could be together doesn't look wrong. These are two teenagers who will never see each other as sister and brother, whether a court decrees it or not, and in the moment, in the cabin, Callie and Brandon believed they would never face a reality where they would be siblings in the eyes of the law.

More: Season 3 of The Fosters has been all about Callie's boy mistakes so far

For Callie, having sex with Brandon was the absolute worst choice she could have made, though. The sacrifice she made for Rita was monumental, and so purely Callie, nothing else made sense. The sacrifice she makes to be with Brandon is far more frustrating. I want nothing more than for Callie to learn from her past mistakes. As much as she loves Brandon, the home she has with the Fosters is worth fighting to the bitter end for.

Callie has come so far in such a short amount of time. Her anger has slipped away, along with her desire to run. Brandon is the one thing she cannot truly let go of, and as beautiful as the scene they shared was, it was too heartbreaking to be romantic. The Fosters put Callie's future in a precarious situation again simply because she chose to do the right thing by Rita and the wrong thing for herself.

At a certain point, Callie is going to have to learn to put herself first. Choosing to help Rita was the only choice Callie could make, but she had options where Brandon was concerned. She gave up on herself when she let her romantic feelings take control, and it is so disappointing to see her go down this path. Brandon and Callie's Romeo and Juliet routine has consistently been Callie's undoing.

More: Would it really be so bad if Callie went to live her bio dad Robert?

I wanted to see her believe she still had a shot at being adopted because it would mean Callie still had hope. Brandon may look like a pretty sweet consolation prize, but he is nothing compared to having a family who loves and supports her. Yes, she will always have Robert, but he can't give her what Stef and Lena can. Brandon definitely can't give Callie the safety and security she needs to flourish.

Teenagers do stupid things, and I knew Brandon and Callie would give in to their feelings eventually. Their night in the cabin was inevitable even as their lives diverged. The chaos they found themselves in over the summer was always pushing them back to each other. It's what they do next that truly matters. Callie doesn't have to tank her future; she can withhold the truth from the court and Stef and Lena. She can choose to lie, and, just this once, she should.

Even though she feels like there is nothing left to lose, Callie still has a shot at getting everything she has ever wanted minus Brandon. Any romantic future with him has to be scrapped. The Fosters showed Callie making a positive self-sacrifice, but she has to stop throwing herself on every pyre she finds. My one hope for the finale is that Callie finally chooses Callie, even if it means being dishonest. No fling should end a young girl's future, and no boy is worth everything. The Fosters can either show that Callie still has some fight left in her, or they can let her pick honesty and Brandon over her home.

More: The Fosters takes on sexism and virginity in a flawed episode

The latter is the only choice that signifies progress. Callie needs to keep moving forward and get Brandon out of her system. She's come too far to run this time. Callie deserves to come home, no matter what it takes. The last sacrifice she has to make is giving up Brandon; then she truly can start over as a teenager who can afford to make bad choices without risking everything she's worked so hard to attain.

Mom visiting her sick baby finds out stranger paid her parking ticket

This mother, who chose to remain anonymous, posted a picture of the parking ticket she got outside the hospital, along with a note from a kind stranger named Laura, to the Canberra Mums Facebook page this weekend:

Stranger parking ticket

Stranger parking ticket

This unbelievable and random act of kindness came on the heels of good news: The parking ticket was paid as the mother was picking up her infant son from the Canberra Hospital after he had been discharged on Sunday. In just a few days, the post has received more than 80,000 likes and 11,000 shares.

What's so beautiful about this gesture is that it wasn't just any parking ticket. A stranger recognized the fact that a car parked outside the hospital was probably not there for the best reason. The odds were, the owner of the vehicle was struggling and could use some relief.

Instead of a young mother of a sick baby coming out of the hospital to face yet another frustration, she was met with a message of hope. Even during this lonely time as she played the waiting game, there were strangers looking out for her.

If a stranger like Laura could do something like this for a struggling new mom, just think of how much we can help the parents we already know. When a child goes into the hospital for a health issue, most of the focus is on them. Parents stay by their side day and night, often sacrificing food, sleep and work, until that day when they can finally take their sick child home.

As much as we want to send flowers to a baby or young child in the hospital, or promise we're praying by liking a Facebook update, these struggling parents need our help. On Bump to Bean, Erin Halper, a mother of a 15-month-old child who has had two open-heart surgeries, says that while balloons and flowers are appreciated, they may also be useless since they aren't normally allowed on the intensive care floor.

If you know a parent who has a child in the hospital, it's really quite easy: Think practically. Think about what you would want if you were in their shoes, constantly worrying about your child's health. Halper suggests home-cooked meals, cozy socks and blankets for cold hospital rooms, entertainment for hospital downtime and offers of babysitting or transportation to help other children in the family. Even the smallest gesture can make a big difference — like offering help for basic household tasks that can pile up during a hospital stay. Buy groceries, mow the lawn, water the plants, walk the dogs or do a load of laundry.

More: Your kid could have Lyme disease and you might not even know it

Laura's kindness to a mom visiting her baby in the hospital had bigger repercussions than she may ever realize. But for the rest of us, we don't have to wait to find a stranger to help. The next time someone on your Facebook feed posts a picture of their sick child in the hospital or a link to a GoFundMe page, don't just like or donate. Go that extra mile.

Face Off 9 contestant Sidney Crumbie

Age: 31
Hometown: Pace, Florida
Residence: Burbank, California
Occupation: Special FX instructor

Check out Sidney’s past work

You can follow Sidney on Twitter @sidneycumbie

SheKnows: How are you doing?

Sidney: Just hanging out here at work.

SK: Talk about that. What is your day-to-day life like?

SC: I actually teach effects makeup at EI, which is a school of makeup in Hollywood. It’s awesome just dealing with a lot of people who want to become makeup artists. I love it.

More: Face Off judges dish on the 100th episode and real life weddings

SK: What was the reaction from your students when you landed a spot on Face Off?

SC: [Laughs] It’s pretty funny. Some of them watch it, but it’s weird. I don’t know where the people that actually watch the show live. I’m thinking, hell, they can’t be in California. A lot of my students are like, “Yeah, I watch it now because you were on there, but I didn’t originally watch it.” Usually, if you’re out here, you watch it because you know somebody on it. It’s cool. They liked seeing me on the air, but they were also super sad that I went home.

SK: Were you a fan of Face Off before you got on it?

SC: Everybody would talk about it. “Hey, if you want to do makeup, you’ve gotta watch Face Off.” I guess, but if I’m gonna have TV shows, I’m gonna limit myself to two. I already have my two, so I didn’t really get into it that much. But I know a lot of people that [were] on it because of being out here. Most of the makeup artists [live] out here, so I knew a lot of people that were on it already.

More: Omar Sfreddo talks about his Face Off elimination

SK: How did you get on the show?

SC: I was working as a model. I modeled for every makeup artist, any makeup artist that needed me. Keaghlan [Ashley] from Season 7, I modeled for her. I just knew so many of them… When nobody needed me as a model, I was like, “Man, I’d just like to turn myself into a monster.” I sat down and started doing it, and that’s really how I learned how to do makeup.

SK: Tell us about your elimination. You found yourself in the bottom with Omar, but how confident were you? Did you think you were safe?

SC: The whole episode, I was just thinking how I didn’t want to do a beauty makeup. I really didn’t want to do it at all. Omar was doing the cowl, and I was like, I gotta do this. We had this moment in last looks where we’re like, “Man, we did it. This looks great.” We looked around the room and we’re like, “No. We’re not getting kicked off. We’re safe.” I had no clue we would be in the bottom. We might have been a little nervous, but for me, I was looking at it and the paint job was killer. We got everything done that we needed to get done. I really had no clue. Once it happened, I didn’t know what to think. I was so shocked because [the judges] were like, “You guys didn’t do enough work.” How much is too much and how much is too little? That’s all opinion. It just got me thinking that I don’t get judging. But in the end, they know what they’re doing. Whatever happens, happens, you know? It was shocking, though. I would say at least have one from each team go home. If you’re in the bottom looks two weeks in a row, why doesn’t somebody from the other team [Missy and Libby] go home? Right? That’s just me, though. I would have sent one person from each team instead of making it look like they were going to pick one from us and one from the other. Just name us both together so we can go out as a team instead of as individuals.

More: Face Off deals a shocking double elimination

SK: How did it feel hearing the judges compare the finished makeup to a Cabbage Patch fish?

SC: [Laughs] When they said cabbage, I was like, “Yeah. Yeah, it does look like cabbage.” [laughs] That was true. If something’s dead on — especially if it makes me laugh — why hate on it? It was a good comment. It was really cool.

SK: Is there one particular movie makeup or character that you use for motivation?

SC: This one’s tough. I am a huge zombie fan. I know that’s sort of a stereotypical sort of thing. I absolutely love zombies. Maybe it’s the survival aspect of it. There’s a million zombie movies, but right now The Walking Dead, for me, as makeup, is my favorite. They cast the slimmest people and [make] really gnarly stuff. Greg Nicotero and those guys over there are really killing it. It’s so amazing. Just like everybody else, I just can’t wait for the next episode. I don’t watch it for the drama — it’s just all about the makeup.

SK: If one of your students wanted to audition for Face Off, what tips would you give them?

SC: Remember that it’s a TV show. Know that they have to sell ads. It’s a story, too. You have to tell a story. Don’t get into it thinking it’s based solely on talent. It’s based off personality. It’s based off how you handle the pressure. You can be the most talented person in the world and slip up one time. You can allow a cabbage to go onstage… Just relax and have fun with it. Again, it’s a TV show. Have fun.

SK: Have we ever seen your work in television or movies before?

SC: Really not. I’m relatively new to this… I’m working on a pretty large zombie movie in October. We’re trying to work out all the details and the budget on that. This should be sort of my debut into the feature film world. I hope this works out and something big comes out of it.

SK: How would you describe your overall experience on Face Off?

SC: It was definitely good! You can’t leave anything with a sour attitude. No one did me wrong. Even though I felt like our makeup, overall, was better than some of the others ones, I can’t hate on anybody. It’s all the judges and their opinions. They’re going to be different than mine. I’m biased because I did the makeup. There’s no hard feelings at all. I got to meet really cool people on the show. The whole cast, I love. They’re so nice. Meeting these people is just furthering me with makeup to be inspired by everybody. Even though I felt slighted, I still left with a smile on my face.

How to win the whining wars with kids

$
0
0

Kids whine when they're frustrated, when they're bored, when something seems unfair (often involving a sibling who got something they didn't!), when they're experiencing change (transitioning to a big-kid's bed or potty training) or simply when they feel disconnected from you and they want you back. And it often seems that children wait for the most inopportune moment to start whining: when you're in the supermarket, when you're cooking dinner or when you're on the phone. That makes sense, if you think about it — you've got a distracted parent and a child asking for something they need or want. The parent doesn't listen, the child asks again and pretty soon it escalates into a full-fledged whine.

The key is to nip whining in the bud the moment it happens — or better yet, ward it off in the first place — while giving your child the words to express what he's really feeling. Think of it as a four-part strategy: prevention, detection, distraction, education.

1. Prevention

To ward off whining, start by modeling the desired behavior you expect from your child. Even adults "whine" from time to time; and if you do it, you can be sure your child is picking up on it. Does she hear you yelling at other drivers on the road? Does he see you getting impatient and cranky in the checkout line? Whether you're conscious of it or not, you are your child's role model; and if you can manage frustrations in a calm, good-humored, non-whiny manner, your child is better equipped to do the same.

Younger children who are whining are often feeling disconnected, so try to find times to focus on emotionally connecting with your child. Scoop them up for an impromptu "cuddle time," or set a story time when you read a book together. And rather than focusing exclusively on bad behavior, "catch them" doing something good, and reward their good behavior. "I like the way you asked for a cookie with your polite voice!" Reinforcements and rewards are more effective than punishments.

2. Detection

You want to spot a potential whining situation before it escalates. If your child is asking you a question, be responsive: Give her eye contact, put your hand on his shoulder to show that you're listening and that you care. If you're on the phone, use a cute, eye-catching egg timer and tell your child, "I'll be off in five minutes." Then let them watch it count down so they can tell you when "Time's up!" (But then you really have to do what you say: If you stay on the phone for another 20 minutes, that child will be on the ground wailing, guaranteed.)

3. Distraction

If the prevention methods have failed and you hear that whine cranking up like an air-raid siren... Squirrel! That's right, distraction is the key to greatness. Preferably, make your child laugh; nothing offers a better distraction or throws the whining off track more effectively. Here are a few methods I like:

  • I used to make my kids laugh by saying in an overly dramatic fashion, "I have very funny ears — when they pick up whining, they can't hear at all!"
  • Or, "I'm sorry, but I can't understand you when you whine — it sounds like this," followed by silly nonsense sounds.
  • Open the window wide, gather the (invisible) whiny feelings in your arms, and say, "We're going to throw these bad feelings out the window," which provides children with a strong visual image that makes the concept more tangible.
  • Start a new activity: play a board game or read a book.
  • Grab a mirror or a video camera, so that children can see what whining behavior looks like from the outside — often they have no idea, and they're surprised when they see it. And surprise leads to laughter.
  • Keep a whining jar, and every time your child whines, have them put in a nickel or a quarter. When the jar gets full (and hopefully it never does!), take the money and donate it to a charity — teaching them two lessons: managing their emotions and helping others.

Granted, it requires patience, humor and energy to use these approaches — qualities that are often in short supply when your child is whining! You may need to take a deep breath and use self-talk ("I'm going to be okay," "Everything's under control") to keep yourself grounded and calm.

4. Education

It may not feel like it in the shriek of the moment, but whining actually offers a good opportunity to teach your children some valuable skills. Little kids don't even know they're whining — it's simply a form of communication for them. So we want to show them other alternatives for getting their needs met: "When you use your polite voice, I will listen to you. Here's how to ask nicely." Older children who should have the proper vocabulary can be asked to "please rephrase that."

This is also an excellent time to teach your children emotional intelligence (EQ) skills. Preschoolers don't understand the emotions that are rolling through them like waves, but even children as young as two can learn "feeling words." Help them learn to identify happiness, sadness, anger, frustration, love, fear. Use a mirror to see what those emotions look like on your face, or have them pick out illustrations in children's books. Then talk about strategies that can help them deal with those feelings in a more positive way (talking about them, taking deep breaths, counting to ten).

EQ skills are vital when children go to school and of course later in relationships and in their careers. Teaching your child the language of feelings and the positive strategies to manage their emotions will benefit them not just in the short term, but throughout their lifetimes.

Face Off celebrates 100th episode with zombie weddings (PHOTOS)

Working in pairs, each Face Off team chose a real-life engaged couple with the task of transforming the lovebirds into a whimsical — and macabre — bride and groom. Then, in full makeup, the engaged undead would wed on the reveal stage with McKenzie Westmore (yes, she’s really an ordained minister) presiding.

Wow! Talk about pressure!

Best of the best

The following makeups were labeled as the "top looks" of the challenge.

Ben and Jasmine

Ben and Jasmine showcased their couple’s love of cats for this feline-inspired makeup. The judges especially loved the male character’s horns. “This is exactly what whimsy means,” judge Glenn Hetrick said. “Yarn horns? C’mon! What can be more whimsical?”

Jasmine and Ben's finished makeup

Judge Ve Neill was more enthralled with the female’s facial paint job, which is why Jasmine was named the overall challenge champ. “To hear my name right now on the 100th episode is literally breathtaking. I’m so happy.”

Ricky and Jordan

This was my personal favorite because the colorful, glowing characters looked as if they could sit among the ghouls in the infamous waiting room scene from Beetlejuice. Ricky and Jordan really nailed this one by turning their gaming-loving couple into zombies who died in a swimming pool electrocution accident. Ve compared the finished makeups to “pop-art zombies.”

At risk for elimination

The following makeups were labeled as the “bottom looks” of the challenge.

Jason and Missy

Prior to the judges weighing in, Jason and Missy thought their finished makeups were going to be ranked among the best that week, but that didn’t end up being the case. “The paint job just killed you guys,” Ve said. There was also some concern that the male’s broken neck gag looked more like he was suffering from a disability.

Meg and Nora

With a gay couple as their canvas, Meg and Nora based their characters on a cartoony suicide theme — and the judges weren’t pleased at all. “The idea of this living painting is too subtle to help carry the whimsy. And the female character was poorly executed drag makeup,” judge Neville Page said. Ve doubted that they even knew what the definition of “whimsical” truly is.

The Pretty Little Liars actress is set to exit the show in the fall, and she's already looking forward to what's next.

But first, she's exploring her darker side in a sexy new photo shoot for V magazine.

The photos, shot by James Lee Wall, show Hale dressed in a strappy black dress and lingerie, posing in dark hallways and a dingy-looking apartment.

"I was really excited to do something a lot more grown up and show a different side of me," Hale told V in an interview about the shoot. And it turns out the dark, sexy photos are an indication of what's to come.

"I'll be done next October with [Pretty Little Liars] forever, which is exciting, but also scary at the same time because it's the next chapter of my life and so I'm really looking forward to exploring different and darker roles," Hale shared.

First up? Her first leading role in a movie, which she says will be very different from TV-appropriate PLL.

"There hasn't been a press release, so I can't say the title or anything, but I am doing, like, a really cool indie film in October," she said. "That's sort of the direction I want to head in. It's a little raunchy, so it'll be exciting."

The movie hasn't begun filming yet, but Hale said she's looking forward to getting started.

"Most indie films shoot in 30 days," she said. "It'll still be… you know, the fans of the show have sort of grown up with me, so it's a movie they can watch, but we'll push the envelope a little bit on it. It's a movie that's got a lot of heart, and morals, but the language! I get to drop the f-bomb every other line, which will be fun. This will be my first lead in a movie, which will be very exciting for me."

6 Clues about Britney Spears' Jane the Virgin cameo

$

0

1. There will be drama

According to Jane the Virgin's (brilliant) showrunner, Jennie Snyder Urman, Spears is set to star as the foil to Jane's superficial-yet-endearing telenova dad, Rogelio De La Vega — played, of course, by Jaime Camil. And, let's be real: Where Rogelio goes, drama follows.

More: Britney Spears' new TV gig will make Jane the Virgin fans rejoice

"We are so thrilled that Rogelio's 'nemesis' — Britney Spears — has agreed to appear on Jane the Virgin in episode 205. Personally, after hearing about their long standing feud [from Rogelio's point of view], we are eager to hear Ms. Spears' side of the story, which we assume is quite different," said Urman.

2. Spears is a singer...

So surely she will grace us with a musical cameo, right? Since Urman references Spears by name, it seems safe to assume she will be playing herself. And Xiomara's desire to become a mainstream singer has been central to the show's storyline, so it only seems fair that Spears and Xiomara end up singing a duet or, at the very least, join in a dazzling musical number with Rogelio.

3. She tweeted at Gina Rodriguez

Britney Spears on Jane the Virgin

Britney Spears on Jane the Virgin

When Spears confirmed the guest spot on Twitter, she looped in Jaime — naturally — and Gina Rodriguez, who plays the title character. Because she specifically tagged Rodriguez in the comment, one can only hope it means the two will be sharing scenes together and are possibly already becoming besties off-set. Because that would undoubtedly lead to some pretty fantastic on-set selfies come filming this fall!

4. Her feud with Rogelio means one of two things

Again, Rogelio is a man of many emotions and, thus, much drama. However, most of his major conflicts last season revolved around two things — women and his work. Because Urman implied Spears will essentially be playing herself, it's possible Rogelio hates her because she beat him out for a role at some point or got in the way of his career in another fashion.

More: Britney Spears cusses out a body-shamer at a show and it's glorious (VIDEO)

But what we're really hoping is the drama between Spears and Rogelio has to do with affairs of the heart. I mean, c'mon. How much fun would it be to see Spears in character as one of Rogelio's jilted ex-lovers? This could also lead to some excellent onscreen sparring between Spears and Xiomara, too.

5. She'll be bringing her twang game

Whether Spears does, in fact, play herself as Urman suggested or she ends up portraying a fictional character, we're placing our bets now on the odds Ms. Spears will be a Southern belle, y'all. From small-town Georgia teen Lucy in Crossroads to Will & Grace's "Amber Louise from Alabama," most of Spears' film and TV experience has stayed true to her Southern roots. And why not? Everyone loves a Southern girl.

6. The role could be recurring

Based on the feedback the cameo announcement is getting from Jane the Virgin's talented cast, Spears' guest spot could very well segue into a repeat performance.
