Disney star Dove Cameron reveals her struggle with self-identity

The new TV movie Descendants is about the teenaged children of Disney's greatest villains: Maleficent (Kristin Chenoweth), Cruella de Vil (Wendy Raquel Robinson) and the Evil Queen from Sleeping Beauty (Kathy Najimi). But instead of focusing on the villains we all know and love, the movie is about their high school-aged offspring who seem to be following in their evil footsteps. Dove Cameron plays Mal, Maleficent's daughter, who's having a bit of an identity crisis.

More: Disney moves from princesses to single moms in new movie

While most young girls dream about being a princess, we asked Cameron if she could relate to Mal, given that she's a villain. For Cameron, it was Mal's inner struggle that excited her.

"I think people yearn to watch movies and television about worlds outside their own lives, to experience something new and exciting. If you're making a good piece of fiction, it should be outlandish and big and fantastical, but still relatable to everyday struggles. There's something very relatable in the idea that where you come from is no marking on where you’re going. Whether you come from an extremely privileged background or you come from a broken home, nothing can hold you back from who you want to be and that’s a very universal truth," said Cameron.

Cameron also admitted she was crazy about Mal's purple hair.

So, does Cameron feel pressure to be a role model because she works for Disney? Yes, but not the kind of pressure you might think.

"Disney is such an exceptional group of people, everybody that works for the company is so kind and lovely that it really is like a big family and no one’s telling anyone to say that."

Cameron says her loyalty and love for Disney comes from being treated so well. She also believes that anything expected of someone who works for the Disney Channel is expected from anyone in society.

"It is a wonderful position to be in, though, to set a good example, and that feels like a reward. So if I feel any pressure, it's a good kind of pressure. I feel very grateful for the position I’m in."

Descendants, directed by Kenny Ortega (High School Musical), is super fun with eye-popping colorful costumes, but it's also a bit edgy with its parkour dance moves and the characters' questionable motives. We asked Cameron how Disney continues to stay relevant.

"Disney has their finger on the pulse of what’s cool. Descendants is a little edgier than the stuff they’ve done in the past, but not scary — it’s still family appropriate. But Disney are geniuses about staying on brand when it comes to content, while still keeping it new and fresh, knowing that their audience is growing and changing. Disney grows and changes with their audience."

Just as her character is struggling to decide whether she wants to be a good or a bad person, Cameron claims she struggles with her own identity all the time.

"I'm 19, heck! I have identity crises every six months — who am I? Who do I want to be? That’s what it's all about for a lot of people who watch the [Disney] channel and for a lot of people who are on the channel. It’s a super-pivotal time, which is why I think the channel is super saturated with amazing messages like we find in the film."

If Cameron has any advice for young people, it comes from her favorite quote by Nayyirah Waheed, “The world has ended for me many times and began again the next morning."

"I think that’s really, truly gorgeous. How many times have any of us sat in our bed at 1:30 in the morning, completely unable to sleep, crying, thinking, 'Oh, my God, I’m not going to make it through this.' And then you do. You always, always do."

Cameron says she tries to look for the larger meaning when things go wrong in her life.

"Anytime you make it out of a challenge and you learned the lesson that you were supposed to is good. It's that whole thing about how you're never going to move on from where you are until you get what the universe is trying to tell you. There were so many times when I thought, 'Why does this keep happening to me?' And it's because I was supposed to learn a lesson from it. Then you do and you graduate from it and you don't have to go through that again."

Cameron admits she had her own issues with being too much of a people pleaser. "A lot of performers are, that's just the nature of performing — it completely relies on how people feel about you. I really dealt with that and trying to be someone else for every different crowd that I had. I felt like a different person at home, with my friends, with my boyfriend, classmates, bandmates, coworkers. It was hard for me, too, because I didn't know how to stop observing myself from the outside-in and being so self-conscious. You just kind of experience it enough that you get to a point where you go, 'Wow, no matter who I am or what I do, I cannot make myself into a million different people. There is one true version of myself and I feel really strongly that being anything but that is a disservice to myself.' That’s something that I'm learning right now."

Cameron says it's an amazing lesson to learn because it's so empowering and life-changing.

When we asked if there will be a sequel to the Descendants movie, Cameron said, "The actors are just as much in the dark in that conversation as anyone else."

Descendants airs July 31 on the Disney Channel.

Surprising things that could be affecting your sleep

$

0

I've actually been there myself, and it was something that I shrugged off as normal, but after my nutrition training, I realized it was a signal that something more was going on. Here are three common reasons that you might be waking up in the night.

1. Adrenal fatigue

After a prolonged period of stress, adrenal fatigue can set in. Adrenal fatigue is a cluster of symptoms resulting from chronic stress, one of which includes altered cortisol levels. Cortisol, one of your stress hormones, is released during bouts of stress. When it's only every now and again, there is no issue with it; the problem comes when it's released chronically as it can upset your body's natural cortisol levels, and abnormal cortisol levels can interrupt your sleep cycle.

For adrenal fatigue, while everyone is different, certain adaptogenic herbs can be a good fix and help you sleep through the night. The first is Ashwaghanda in tincture form. Take one dropper of the tincture up to three times daily, once being before bed. Another is Rhodiola, an herb that helps to lower cortisol levels over time. Take 150mg twice daily, away from food.

2. Blood sugar problems

Your body's blood sugar levels naturally rise and fall with food. In an ideal world, if you are eating a proper diet, it stays within the normal range. If you are eating too many refined carbohydrates or sugars, though, it gets too high and excess insulin must be released. This extra insulin results in a subsequent dip below your normal levels which causes you to feel fatigued, sluggish and possibly in need of something sweet to boost you back up into the normal ranges.

When you're sleeping, if your blood sugar levels drop too low, it is often cortisol, the stress hormone, that works to bring your blood sugar levels back up. Your cortisol levels should be low when you are asleep, and if they start to rise this can wake you up.

To solve this, focus on eating more protein throughout the day which will help balance your blood sugar and help you avoid the peaks and dips.

3. Caffeine

Many studies show there are health benefits to caffeine, but what these studies fail to look at is the effect they can have on your sleep. If you are an average person, the half life of caffeine in your body is six hours. This means that it takes you six hours to metabolize half of the caffeine in your system. If you have had a coffee at 3 p.m., you could still have half of the caffeine in your system at 9 p.m., and one quarter of it there at midnight, which may cause you to wake up in the night.

4. Chocolate

If you are a chocoholic and have sleep problems, you might want to go easy on the chocolate consumption in the evening, as it is a stimulant too and can cause you to have problems sleeping.

What you'll notice is that your sleep quality has a lot to do with your stress levels and your blood sugar balance. By taking steps to balance your blood sugar and eat foods that help to reduce your stress, you will truly be able to start sleeping more soundly through the night.

The Mamafesto: We need to dig ourselves out of the 'motherhood trap'

$

New Statesman's cover story on the "motherhood trap" looks at the idea that women are at a disadvantage because of their connection to mothering (whether they are actually mothers or not). They focus both on the notion that capitalism at its core relies on unpaid labor — usually from women of color — to sustain itself and that this labor harms women at the expense of their career opportunities and earning potential.

While this particular article focuses on the lack of women in politics in the U.K., the concept of the "motherhood trap" can be seen in many careers and in places all over the world. There are clearly motherhood penalties when it comes to work, whether in the form of pregnancy discrimination, the pay gap due to lost time during maternity leave (and the whole issue of lack of paid maternity leave in the first place for most women) or the stereotype that women workers who are mothers are seen as less committed to their jobs or unreliable because they may be more distracted by home and family concerns. Because of this, they can fall into the motherhood trap, being passed up for certain projects or promotions.

More: The Mamafesto: A look at what's been happening with birth control choices

Childless women aren't immune to this either, however. While they may not be affected while younger, once they hit a certain age, then there's the potential for being penalized for not having children, as employers and higher-ups question what's "wrong" with you. Along this line of thinking, New Statesman notes that many of the childless British female politicians had their childless status used against them. And this phenomenon is seen worldwide: "In June last year, a 35-year-old Tokyo City assembly member called Ayaka Shiomura was heckled during a debate on support for working mothers with cries of 'Go and get married' and 'Can’t you give birth?'. In 2005, when Angela Merkel first seemed to have a chance of leading Germany’s ruling coalition, the wife of her main rival, Gerhard Schröder, commented acidly that she 'does not embody with her biography the experiences of most women', going on to mention childbirth and school admissions."

More: The Mamafesto: Why are schools asking if you had a vaginal birth?

You're damned if you do (have kids), and you're damned if you don't. Yet the same is never true for men. The article points to a 2014 study done out of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where researchers found that employers viewed fathers as more stable and committed to their work, since they have a family to provide for, so they’re less likely to be flaky. Yet women who were mothers were looked at completely differently.

More: The Mamafesto: Kudos to NYC Mayor de Blasio on Commission on Gender Equity

Workplace culture doesn't stand a chance of changing if actual policies don't change, like paid maternity/family leave, paid sick time and flexible hours. For now, we need to help one another dig out of the motherhood trap, whether by gently or more boldly alerting co-workers when they're falling prey to stereotypical ideals or thought patterns, and supporting one another as women, whether we're moms or not.

5 Fun alternatives to yoga and meditation for stress relief

$

Life is full of pressure and frustration; in other words, it’s stressful. Sitting in traffic, racing against deadlines, fighting with loved ones, all of these things make you tense and tired. We are all familiar with the traditional ways to relieve stress such as deep breathing, meditation, exercise and massage but there are also unconventional and fun ways to say goodbye to stress. If you’re feeling stressed, don’t despair; use the following practical tips to help you handle it!

1. Play

Have fun! Do something you used to do as a kid before you had so many responsibilities. Paint a picture. Play a board game. Ride your bike. Shoot some hoops. Go bowling. It may seem silly at first but recreation is a great way to decompress and reduce or eliminate the effects of stress.

An entire therapeutic field called Recreation Therapy has been developed based on these principles. Recreational Therapists use play, pleasure, sports, social activities, arts and crafts to treat patients in all sorts of health-care settings. In addition to reducing stress, play can give you more energy and increase your overall sense of well-being. Go make a play date for yourself and have some fun!

2. Shake a leg

Music and dance have long been linked to health and happiness; they can relieve stress, lower blood pressure and help manage pain. In many forms of meditation, dance is used to bring about a peaceful mental state and to generate positive energy. Simply switching on the music and shaking a leg can work some magic. Find your favorite CD. It doesn’t matter if it’s Lady Gaga or Gangnam Style. Stand in the middle of the room, close your eyes and let the music move you. Let yourself go! Before you know it, your body will start to sway and find its own movement. After 15 minutes, you will forget why you were stressed out. Dancing is a fun, energizing and free way to keep fit and stay tension free.

3. Laugh yourself calm

Laughing is a great strategy and a powerful tool for coping with stress. Looking for the humor in a situation gives us the ability to experience joy and release tension even when faced with difficulties. However, laughing isn’t always easy, especially when you are too stressed out to find anything funny about your problems. It can help to watch a good comedy or seek out people with that special flair for making you laugh. Buy a CD with your favorite comedian doing stand-up and keep it in the car for stressful traffic jams. Humor and laughter can foster a positive and hopeful attitude. We are less likely to succumb to feelings of depression and helplessness if we are able to laugh at what is troubling us.

4. Smell the sweet stuff

Essential oils are an excellent way to help you relax and relieve stress and they can be used in many ways. You can put a few drops into an oil burner and let the scent spread through your home or office. Essential oils can be added to your favorite lotion and massaged into your skin. You can put a few drops on a handkerchief, hold it under your nose and breathe deeply. They can also be added to the water in the tub for a warm aromatherapy bath. Oils such as chamomile, jasmine and lavender create a calming feeling while rosemary and peppermint can help your mind become clearer and more focused. Essential oils can help us attain a balanced emotional state and have a positive effect on problems that are stress related.

5. Write it down

If you’re having one of those crazy days when nothing goes right, it’s a good idea to write things down in a journal to get them off your chest. Writing about stressful life events helps put things in perspective and has a beneficial effect on well-being. It has even been shown to reduce disease symptoms in chronically ill people. There are many ways to keep a journal. You can write about things that happened during the day and how they made you feel, as if you were venting to a friend. Another approach is shifting the focus from unpleasant events to happier things by writing about what you appreciate in your life. There are also many guidebooks to journaling that help you explore your personality, creativity, life story and more.

If you are suffering from severe or chronic stress, you may have difficulty trying to change your thoughts and behavior with these simple methods. Psychiatrists and psychologists are trained to help you break free of those patterns.

Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC movie: Everything we know about the zombie film

The news broke at San Diego Comic-Con, where Nick Carter — from the beloved Backstreet Boys — made an appearance to promote the film. Here's everything we know so far.

1. Nick Carter will be the star

Nick will now be a quadruple threat by adding screenwriter to his résumé. He will write the screenplay as well as play the lead in the film — Jack, the unsung hero.

2. It's about... zombies

Originally, the film was supposed to be a zombie-Western genre mix. But Nick told E! News that he "wanted to make it more modern and apocalyptic than an old Western." According to Rolling Stone, it's about a "'ragtag band of gunslingers fighting a zombie plague."

3. The Asylum is set to produce

The Asylum, the production company for Sharknado and dozens of other sci-fi films, will produce the new film. David Latt, cofounder of The Asylum, told Rolling Stone that several distributors he works with responded immediately to Nick's idea.

More: Elizabeth Banks' epic Tara Reid, Sharknado dis is feud-worthy

4. It's called Dead 7

Nick explains to E! News, "I started writing this screenplay, Dead West, close to five years ago but it wasn't till about two years ago that we really started to make it happen. It was first called Dead West but was told that could be too limiting [...]." So, for now, it's Dead 7.

5. Boy bands will unite!

Currently, Backstreet's Howie Dorough and A.J. McLean and *NSYNC's Joey Fatone are on board with the project. But it's still in its early stages and "Nick's vision is to bring some other people in that genre that have never really done a lot of film but that were in music in the nineties and 2000s," Fatone tells Rolling Stone.

6. An NKOTB member may join

Nick would like to have Jordan Knight from New Kids on the Block join the cast. According to Rolling Stone, Nick explains, "I want it to be musically based. I might reach out to Jordan [...]"

7. McLean is the villain

McLean — always the baddest of the boys — will fill the role as the villain in the post-apocalyptic film.

8. Nick will have a brother

In the movie, a love triangle forms between Nick and his brother — but, no, not Aaron. For this role, Nick has called out to One Direction's Niall Horan via Twitter.

9. Nick tweets a lot, actually

Niall isn't the only celeb Nick has his eye on. He has reached out to several candidates — including Mel B from the Spice Girls, Sisqó and even Paul McCartney — to star in the film, again, via Twitter.

10. Nick's wife will debut

According to E! News, Nick's top choice for the ingenue caught in the love triangle between him and his brother would be... Hilary Duff! Hmmm... she's Aaron's ex-girlfriend, remember? But, in any case, Nick's wife, Lauren, will be appearing in the film.

We love that she didn't post a staged photo — with perfect lighting and everyone smiling sweetly at the camera. Instead, she shows how things really are those first few hours after a baby is born. The Hart of Dixie star sits in a hospital chair, covered in blankets, as her robe is pulled down so her son can breastfeed.

Not what we've come to expect in a world of flawless magazine cover announcements from celeb moms, but it's absolutely perfect! Jaime looks fresh-faced and make-up free, as she smiles sweetly at her family.

1. Tile

The tile in your bathroom is most likely ugly and outdated. Head over to your local hardware store and pick up some peel-and-stick tile. It can go right over the existing tile and you can pull it back off when it's time to move out. Just heat it with a hairdryer and pull it off.

2. Wallpaper

Image: Etsy

You can't paint the ugly white walls but you can cover them with temporary wallpaper. These are some beautiful options.

This peel-and-stick paper can be used on walls, the ceiling, the back of your bookcase, even in place of a backsplash. When you move out, just peel it back off.

3. Hanging window treatments

Want to hang some window treatments but aren't allowed to drill holes into the wall? Why not use 3M Command hooks? They adhere right to the wall and come in a wide variety of colors. Buy panels or valances with grommet holes and hook them right onto the hooks. You can also use 3M ceiling hooks to hang up your coffee mugs or kitchen utensils!

4. Area Rugs

Area rugs are a great way to cover what is usually ugly apartment carpet. You can also use them to add a pop of color and personal style to your place.

5. Live plants

Plants bring life to the space. If you're worried about keeping them alive, try succulents, which require little attention. If you absolutely don't want the responsibility of a live plant, fake plants work too.

6. Contact paper for drawers

In the kitchen, use peel-and-stick contact paper to line your drawers and cabinets. There are a lot of fun patterns to choose from and it gives another non-permanent personal touch!

More: Kim Zolciak flaunts her breasts — much to her haters' disapproval (PHOTOS)

On Monday, Zolciak took to Instagram to share a selfie, along with the caption, "LA bound!! Up at the crack of dawn glam early this am thx@marinarumppe @nikitpressley I'm feeling fly as hell.. loving my lashes today@pinkminklashes in "lash addict" which describes me perfectly!" And the reaction to the picture has been overwhelmingly negative.

Critics have once again blasted Zolciak for having had plastic surgery — rumors which she has previously slammed — with comments including "Looking plastic, just stop! You f***ed your face up," "Did she get a nose job??????," "Why can't you just be a little more natural?" and "I don't understand why TV personalities feel the need to think they need plastic surgery... you were so beautiful naturally, now unfortunately you can see you had work done I just don't get it!!!"

And, unfortunately, the backlash did not end there. There are also some nasty comments picking apart Zolciak's appearance, including one that compares her to a character from the 2000 film, How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

"She looks like shea [sic] one of the characters in the Grinch," the comment reads. Seriously? This negativity needs to stop.

As women, we should be encouraging and supporting one another, not bringing each other down, and this is something that is clearly starting to bother Zolciak's fans, as one passionate person took the time to write a little message to all the haters out there.

Be nice or be quiet! You're beautiful Kim and unfortunately the hate never seems to go away," the fan wrote.

But her fans are not the only ones getting annoyed: Zolciak is also biting back.

Responding to a comment that reads "Hate the white liner, they give you doll eyes, you look better without it..." Zolciak wrote, "@magdalena7.0 did anyone ask you wtf u thought about my eyeliner?! No."

Men Tell All: 8 Moments that reminded us we could have been kinder to Kaitlyn

MoreThe Bachelorette: Kaitlyn meets her final two's families in, uh, Utah

But watching the Men Tell All special, the following moments made us realize how unfair most of that scrutiny was — and how we could have been kinder to Kaitlyn throughout the process.

1. Listening to Corey with an "e" call her a disgrace

The Bachelorette Men Tell All: 1

The Bachelorette Men Tell All: 1

Seeing the way some of the guys spoke to Ian throughout the season was hard enough, but hearing Corey jump on the bandwagon after the fact and call Kaitlyn's behavior disgraceful just made us feel dirty. And when both Jared and Ben H. quickly and eagerly jumped to Kaitlyn's defense — "I won't sit here and let someone bash Kaitlyn," said Ben H. — it makes you realize if guys as wonderful as those two feel that way about Kaitlyn after everything that transpired, she's obviously good people. And then that thought makes you realize, "Hey, chick, that means she was good people prior to getting that validation from a bunch of dudes."

2. Watching JJ's playback of bizarre moments

The Bachelorette JJ

During JJ's time in the hot seat, we saw a recap of his most memorable moments on the show. This included four-hour Jacuzzi soaks with Clint, sobbing in the bushes and slapping himself in the face. Come to think of it, Kaitlyn had quite a few jackalopes to deal with this season. We can't imagine dating that many guys at once, let alone that many eccentric personalities, without making a few missteps.

3. Having Jared point out that there was no easy decision for Kaitlyn

Oh, Jared. This kid was already a perfect gentleman and, now that he has shaved his spotty beard, he's damn near perfect all around. So it wasn't exactly a surprise when he sang Kaitlyn's praises during his time center stage with Chris Harrison. However, he did make us think when he pointed out that — although, sure, he had hoped for a different outcome — there was no simple, pain-free decision for Kaitlyn at the point she sent him packing. He respected her journey. We could have, too.

4. Learning that she has been receiving death threats (!)

Kaitlyn Bristowe

When Kaitlyn finally came to the stage, Harrison did something unprecedented in that he paused before delving into the drama to discuss the very real and hurtful ways Kaitlyn has been received by people (namely, internet trolls). And, to be honest, it was hard to watch as the laid-back brunette emotionally described getting death threats. What is wrong with people? And, pointedly, does our sometimes-snarky commentary contribute to this negativity?

More: 4 Guys from Kaitlyn Bristowe's season who hope to be The Bachelor (VIDEO)

5. Seeing some of the scathing social media commentary

The Bachelorette Men Tell All: 3

The Bachelorette Men Tell All: 3

Had it not been clear the messages were lifted straight from Twitter, it would almost have been hard to believe the hateful drivel Harrison shared was even real. Hashtag slut? Really? A mother calling Kaitlyn a whore and hoping that serves as a moral compass for her kids? Women attacking Kaitlyn for her behavior in a way that goes beyond passive-aggressive trolling to outright threatening? This is not acceptable. This is wrong. This is literally making us feel sick. These comments say much more about the women making them than they do about Kaitlyn.

6. Hearing Chris Harrison support her personally and proudly

Kaitlyn Bristowe

Following the gut-wrenching moment Harrison read the hateful commentary aloud, the audience and the recently rejected suitors stood and clapped in solidarity for Kaitlyn. For his part, Harrison embraced her, telling her he was proud to call her his friend. I've had the pleasure of interviewing Chris Harrison and the man is a straight shooter. He doesn't put on any affectations — if he says he is proud to call Kaitlyn his friend, I believe him. And that confirms in my mind that Kaitlyn is getting a raw deal in the court of public opinion.

7. Being made to reconsider the Nick situation

The Bachelorette Men Tell All: 2

The Bachelorette Men Tell All: 2

Admittedly, we've not been the biggest fans of Nick (although, also admittedly, we understand it a bit more after seeing him shirtless). But — and we never thought we'd say this — Clint, JJ and Cupcake actually made us see the whole Nick thing from a new perspective, and it has given us a greater understanding for Kaitlyn. Not to mention empathy. What they pointed out was that the connection between Nick and Kaitlyn was undeniable, so she had to explore it. "She had to turn over every rock," said JJ. And, you know, we get it. If they could sense that connection was real and intense, Kaitlyn couldn't let it be a lingering question in her mind.

The Bachelorette Men Tell All

One of the best parts of the night was the blooper reel at the end. Why? It gave us the ultimate reminder: why we loved Kaitlyn so much to start with. She's funny and frank and real to a fault sometimes. She is unapologetically herself and, yes, she's hilarious. Plus, she knows how to make light of herself, joking about the hullabaloo over her bird tattoos, "I'm like, 'I can't see them!'" Finally, the truth is known — and we kind of love it. Kudos for staying true to yourself, Kaitlyn. You do you, girl!

The Fosters airs its most controversial episode yet — all about religion

$

0

There is no subject more personal or controversial than religion. Most television series either shy away from the topic or, if it comes up, reveal their characters align with some sort of faith, even if they don't mention it much. The Fosters took a different approach by taking a brave, straightforward stance on the subject when Mariana told her moms she wanted to be baptized in the Catholic Church in order to be Isabella's godmother.

More: How do you think The Fosters handled Mariana's guilt over losing her virginity to Wyatt?

Stef was raised by a religious father, and it was previously established that a big part of what drove a wedge between them was Stef's refusal to be part of a church that believed she was going to hell because of who she is. She made a choice for herself to not take part in organized religion. Lena's beliefs were less defined, but if her statements in "Faith, Hope, Love" were any indication, she is a spiritualist. She believes in a higher power and she believes in love, but she is unwilling to define her beliefs any further.

This was Mariana's first brush with spirituality and, at first, Mariana did not grasp the enormity of what she was committing to. She wants so badly to be a part of her biological family that she let her grandfather's desire for her to be part of the church and her own desire to stay close to her biological sister cloud her judgment. Although Stef and Lena admitted they had always planned to let their children choose their own spiritual path, when confronted with Mariana being baptized as Catholic, their first reaction was to simply not allow it.

More: Relive The Fosters' excellent argument for young girls being involved in STEM and dance

It is understandable that Stef and Lena would want to shield their daughter from a religion that is opposed to their marriage and to so many other truths that they hold dear. However, they ultimately let Mariana make her own decision and she came close to being baptized — then the priest told her the church would accept her mothers because it "accepted all sinners." For a strong-minded feminist like Mariana, that was all she needed to hear in order to know the church was not for her. She came to the conclusion that taking part in a ritual she didn't believe in was not necessary for her to look after Isabella's well-being.

Throughout the scene in the church, Mariana kept focusing on the words printed across a sign hung among the usual Christian iconography. The sign read "faith, hope and love," three tenants which the Foster family has always let guide them along with compassion and acceptance. To further illustrate the hypocrisy that can exist within organized religion, Mariana had to force her grandparents to truly open their hearts and help Ana with her battle with postpartum depression instead of expecting the worst from her. To paraphrase Mariana, she may not go to church, but she knows that the true mark of being a good person is believing in a person's ability to find their best possible self.

The Fosters very firmly presented the notion that organized religion and a belief in God with a capital "G" are not the only paths to goodness. The only guidance Mariana found in the church guided her right back out of it. The hypocrisy of her grandparents only added to the overall message that organized religion is a messy road full of fear for many people, instead of a comforting place of inclusion.

More: Callie and AJ's relationship is leading them both down a dangerous path

Stef and Lena don't want their children to fear anything or to limit themselves in any way. In their eyes, the church is a place of oppression where the good messages are drowned out by talk of hell and damnation. It may not be the way everyone raises their children, but Mariana's strength and capacity for love prove it is just as valid as raising a child to be religious. The Fosters' take on religion, although firm, was respectful and refreshing. While it may raise ire from some viewers, Stef and Lena's family is built on a foundation of love and they would never interfere with someone else's beliefs; they only asked for the same respect when it came to guiding their own children spiritually. In a country built on freedom, what better message could the show send?

Critical conversations all couples should have after 10 years of marriage

$

Successful couples, on the other hand, know that a successful marriage requires daily and weekly care, plus occasional pauses for more heavy-duty maintenance. According to New York City couples' counselor Janet Zinn, anniversaries can serve as a wonderful reminder for couples to pause and maintain their relationship.

Surprisingly, the best types of marriage maintenance conversations do not begin with fraught discussions about how the relationship ought to improve, or how to obliterate the relationship's weaknesses. "First and foremost, a talk about appreciation and gratitude is essential for the long-term," Zinn says. "Let your partner know how he's made a difference in your life, and be specific." This makes a lot of sense, since the best kinds of relationships are ones in which there is shared respect and fond memories as the basis from which to tackle concerns.

More: Woman confronts ex-boyfriends to find out what they really thought

Once you've enjoyed a walk down memory lane, Zinn suggests that you turn the conversation toward the future you want to build together. "Have a talk on how you would both like to grow in your lives, and what type of support you may need from one another to do so," she says.

Finally, and only once you and your partner feel edified, you should discuss relationship patterns you don't like, and how you can work together to break those patterns. "For instance, it could be that one spouse is critical, and the other feels that whatever he or she does isn't good enough. The core is that the critical one doesn't feel heard and respected, while the criticized one doesn't feel appreciated," Zinn explains.

More: People of all ages say what love means to them and it's so perfect (VIDEO)

If you're not sure where to begin, Zinn suggests the following prompts to start your conversation on the right path.

Appreciation and gratitude

1. What are at least three ways in which you have become a better person with your partner?

2. Thank you for teaching me _____.

3. You have added value to my life by _____.

4. I really appreciate the time(s) that you ____.

Toward the future

5. Together, I am looking forward to _____.

6. Could I please have your support to try ______.

7. Something new I'd like to try together is ______.

Shared memories

8. I fell in love with you when you _____.

9. Remember when ____?

10. It was so meaningful when you _____.

Repeated patterns

11. What do you see as a new way to work through some of our differences?

12. How can we listen to each other without becoming defensive?

13. What is one thing you would like to change to enhance our relationship?

14. What steps can I take to help our relationship thrive? (This question can either be shared or private.)

Even if the discussion time seems a little daunting at first, try to remember that the conversation is first and foremost a happy one. If you've made it to 10 years, there is so much to celebrate, and so much to look forward to in the future.

6 Times You're the Worst nailed modern 'complicated' relationships

More: Our initial review stands — this is the absolute best show

1. Watching your ex marry someone else

Season 1 starts at Jimmy's ex-girlfriend's wedding to another man. He meets Gretchen when he has run out of the reception and she's standing on the corner, a stolen wedding present under her arm. Within seconds, they realize they have a connection: They're both equally cynical human beings in equally bad places.

We've all been there. We've all said terrible things to people we loved. We've all ended up making bad choices during bad times.

2. Post-wedding hook-up

Post-wedding. Post-breakup. Post-time-to-get-my-life-back-together moment. At some point in our lives, we'll make a major decision, and we'll follow it up by doing something everyone else would consider reckless. It'll be fun. And we may or may not regret it afterward. But, for that brief moment in time, it will be a relationship with give and take, awesomeness and awkwardness.

More: Have you caught all the cameos in the new Wet Hot American Summer?

3. Wanting love... but wanting to be independent

Gretchen and Jimmy's biggest issues are themselves. Throughout Season 1, we watched them come together and fall apart all because of their own uncertainties and stubbornness. There's a preset notion that you can't be independent and in a relationship at the same time. Lord help the person you're dating when you first start trying to find that balance.

4. Thinking you want to be married and then realizing you married the wrong guy

Poor Lindsey. She's the epitome of the girl who is convinced she needs to get married young and start a family. She's also the epitome of the girl who married the first boy to propose only to realize she married the wrong person. More importantly, she realized she wasn't ready to settle down. At some point, you're going to have some form of this relationship. You're going to come face to face with a person completely in love with you and realize you moved too fast or too soon. It sucks. But you'll be OK. And so will the other person.

5. Post-college roommates

You probably thought that when you graduated college you'd be done with roommates, didn't you? Sadly, especially in today's economy, that's probably not the case. Being an adult and having a roommate doesn't make it easier. As a matter of fact, it often operates on a whole new level of frustration and awkwardness, just like Jimmy and Edgar.

6. Trying to relate to your entirely unrelatable BFF

Talk about relationship woes. As we get older, sometimes the hardest relationships are the ones we have with our best friends. No matter how much you used to be on the same level, you're each going to reach your life goals at different times. Linds and Gretch dearly love each other, but they're in different places in life. Sometimes that just makes things complicated.

Woman furious over what she sees at Target, Warns others immediately

I clicked open, positive I was about to read something about discriminatory practices at my favorite store; something social-justice centric.

I was wrong.

More: 5 Ways to get a jump on back to school madness

A group of New Jersey students are wagging their collective finger at Target for displaying shirts with the word "trophy" on it in the junior department, where girls might shop as early as middle school. As a mom, should I be upset that a major retailer is trying to entice girls and women to label themselves as trophies? Is it okay for a 13-year-old to wear the words trophy on her chest? Is that demeaning?

My daughter is now old enough to shop without my supervision, but I remember the bane of my existence when she was in the eighth grade:  those cutesy-poo loungewear ensembles with Angel or Pink stamped on the butt in glittery letters. It was my wake-up call that my little girl wasn’t a little girl anymore and that she had ideas about expression that clashed with mine. It went beyond "I don't like what you're wearing." I had concerns that her clothes were sending the wrong message to people who saw her wearing them and then dimly recalled that time my dad and I argued over a pair of satin shorty shorts I wanted to wear to the roller skating rink.

As a mom, I don’t like to see young girls in clothes with provocative or vapid sayings… I don't like seeing anyone wearing them, actually, but Target showcasing a "trophy tee" in the junior department? Meh. It doesn't make me want to jump on the feminist bandwagon and chat "I am woman hear me roar."

If you have a daughter, you can set boundaries on what type of clothing is acceptable. When tweens and younger teens shop in the same place as adult women, there may be times when mom has to make the call on whether there should be rules or limits about clothing… you know, to be a mom.

My take? Clothing is a form of self-expression and a temporary one at that. I would certainly not encourage my teen to wear a shirt that said trophy;  in fact, I’d probably strongly steer her away from it because it’s kind of tacky — in my book. I might even refuse to purchase it with my money. But would I outright forbid her to have it?

I don't think I would.

More: 6 Tips for (practically) hassle-free trips with kids

Let's pretend for a minute that the thing your child wants most in this whole, wide world is a "trophy tee" from Target… I know, barf, right? I mean, I'd certainly hope not, but what if she wanted to buy it using her birthday or babysitting money?

I think I'd roll my eyes and use some kind of folksy expression about picking battles or frying bigger fish… and let her have the damn shirt. There would be discussions about what the words on the shirt really meant and how that might cause others to use her wardrobe choice as a way to define her in a way that might make her uncomfortable. Depending on her age, there would probably be limitations on where she could wear it.

But, I don’t think Target is leading the charge on sexism because they sell this shirt. A young woman wearing it probably doesn't send the most progressive message but I think saying that it objectifies the wearer is a bit of a stretch.

More: Things you say that make you sound like your mom

Target is a big store that sells a lot of things that don't mesh with my belief system or ideals on child rearing, such as fad diet aids or violent video games. Are we going to accuse Target of being pro-eating disorder or responsible for violence? I don’t think so.

To be clear, I'm not a fan of the piece of fabric that caused this kerfuffle: not as a woman, a mom or a consumer. But at the end of the day, it's not a label, it's just a shirt.

Why blueberries do wonders for your skin, plus 2 DIY face masks

$

Why add them? How do we know they provide any benefit at all? Of all the botanicals we could have chosen to add to a soap, the addition of blueberries was a no-brainer. Natural antioxidants, natural vitamins A, E & C and beta-carotene are all present in copious amounts. But what is even more amazing... the benefits remain in the soap.

Research has shown that the antioxidant power of blueberries is retained even after freezing and heating. Individual-quick-frozen (IQF) blueberries retain as much antioxidant power as fresh-picked berries. By holding its shape and texture in a quick freeze, the phtyonutrients, the color and the anti-oxidant properties are still intact.

In cold-process handcrafted soap, the process of saponification (converting fat to soap) generates heat which is typically damaging to nutrients. However, this is what makes the blueberry all the more incredible!

In terms of cooking and applying heat, research in 2009 by the University of Berkeley found no substantial loss of antioxidants even after baking, simmering or microwaving! So even with soap-making temperatures rising to 200 degrees F during saponification, we know that the blueberry antioxidants are still intact in the final bars.

Since 2004, there has been a massive amount of research on blueberries by the FDA, scientists, universities and blueberry growers themselves. They have shown that blueberry antioxidants protect the skin from cellular damage. The vitamin C content helps strengthen blood vessels and reduce the appearance of spider veins under the skin. Also rich in vitamin A, blueberries have been successfully used in the treatment of acne.

The next time you pick up blueberries at the market, set a few aside for the following skin recipes. Treat yourself to one of these blends and feel the difference for yourself.

The harmful preservative you didn't know was in your body products

$

According to Consumerist.com, there is a preservative possibly sitting in your medicine cabinet as we speak that is more than likely to be the reason behind the frequent, painful rash you've been experiencing as of late.

More: 12 Chemicals that can hurt your child's brain

Methylisothiazolinone, otherwise known as MI, is a common preservative found in personal care products such as body wash and shampoo. If you start to notice your skin drying out, red splotches beginning to form and/or are experiencing stinging sensations, facial swelling, blisters and crusting, it would be wise to scan the product's label for MI.

According to Consumerist, after a series of tests and multiple doctor visits when an 8-year-old girl suffered a rash for months, it was found that MI was a key ingredient in the child's Suave Kids Body Wash, which is ironically labeled "hypoallergenic" and "safe for kids' delicate skin."

More: The top 10 preservatives and additives to avoid

It is important to note that the term "hypoallergenic" actually means nothing. According to the federal government, "there are no federal standards or definitions that govern the use of the term 'hypoallergenic.'"

"It was known that that could be an allergen," former head of dermatology at St. Luke's Roosevelt in Manhattan Dr. Vincent Deleo told Consumerist, "but it was fairly safe to use in things like shampoos, which are washed off and so diluted."

MI is increasingly being seen across body care product ingredient labels due to the high demand from consumers for companies to discontinue the use of parabens, so it's a chemical you'll definitely want to look out for. It has been incorporated into many leave-on products as well, such as lotions and moisturizers.

More: Chemical sensitivity in children

It is scary to think that every day products such as shampoo and body washes could cause us more harm than good. Now more than ever, it's important to make sure you are educated in what exactly is being used on your body, considering that the harmful chemicals being removed from products are just being replaced with other chemicals.
