Go Set a Watchman review: In defense of the 'new' version of Atticus

$

It's easy for readers and reviewers to shrug off or be disappointed with Harper Lee's sophomore release, especially given the history. The story goes that Lee actually wrote this "sequel" to To Kill a Mockingbird first. However, her editor at the time became fascinated with the family and asked that she set Go Set a Watchman aside in favor of telling the story of Mockingbird, set some two decades earlier. The original manuscript for Watchman was believed to be long-since lost or destroyed. And, for decades, Lee fans believed they'd never get another book from Lee as she was concerned it would look like a failure in light of the insane success of Mockingbird. And yet here we are: It's 2015, rumors pertaining to Lee's mental health fly around nearly monthly and there's a new book on the market. It's not To Kill a Mockingbird. But people expecting it to be would, honestly, be expecting far too much from anyone. If the power of To Kill a Mockingbird were repeatable, it wouldn't hold its value.

More: Our initial thoughts on the first chapter

What we were given upon finally being allowed inside the pages of Lee's first book is a truly wonderful first book. On a publishing level, this is a book that made it to about the fourth or fifth author-edit and then disappeared. We've been told that very little editing was done to Go Set a Watchman, which would be far from the case in any other circumstance. Already the publishing and editing flow are incomparable to Mockingbird.

More interesting, though, is the issue readers have with the contents of the book. It seems as though readers are having a hard time wrapping their heads around Watchman's version of Atticus. They're calling it an inconsistency. He's being written off as a first, less heroic version of the Atticus we fell for in To Kill a Mockingbird. It seems as though readers are so caught up in trying to find their heroes again that they're missing the biggest theme of Watchman: Change.

Our perfectly endearing narrator, who now prefers to go by Jean Louise, speaks of change from the very get-go in Go Set a Watchman. While traveling by train from her residence in New York City to her home back in Maycomb, Alabama, she sees it in the antennas attached to people's houses. She speaks of it by dropping the bomb of her brother's death. She admits to the change in her father from strong, heroic middle-aged Atticus to the arthritis-riddled, often dependent on others old man she's returning home to visit. The change continues at home when you realize, deeper into the book, Scout isn't at the home she grew up in but somewhere else. Her home was bulldozed and an ice cream parlor (run by a familiar face) stands in its place. Change runs rampant in town as new people move in and try to "spruce up" the familiar one-trick pony she calls home.

More: Is Harper Lee being tricked out of royalties?

And change, dear friends, comes to Atticus in the slightly disturbing news that he's now a member of a segregationist group. A visit to the courthouse finds Miss Jean Louise privvy to the railings of a white supremacist bitterly tearing apart black society while her father sits idly by. For a brief moment, we're even taken back to that moment in Mockingbird when Scout sat in that very balcony and watched her father defend a black man. Our narrator leaves the scene utterly sick from what she's witnessed and truly boggled by this change in Atticus. And it's this change that, just like Jean Louise, readers have the hardest time grasping. But make no mistake. This isn't an inconsistency between the first story and Lee's second, most famous work. This change is real and deliberate.

At the heart of the change, one thing remains the same between Mockingbird and Watchman and that's a father-daughter relationship. Not often explored but always present is the fact that, just as kids grow up, become their own people and change their minds about things a million times over, so, too, do parents. How many of our Tea Party-joining parents once voted for President Clinton? How many Dubya lovers once protested the Vietnam War? Our parents change, almost always to the surprise and dismay of their children. Go Set a Watchman illustrates that part of life beautifully. Atticus went from his daughter's hero to her biggest unsolved puzzle. Atticus changed. Like Scout. Like Maycomb. Like the world around us. Not by accident, but with deliberation. Atticus changed. And it makes perfect sense.

Lately, I've been witnessing these pants get some major action and I couldn't resist jumping on the bandwagon myself. It's refreshing to see pants from the 1960s era be the new modern-day bottom of choice. For ladies who have a day job that requires them to dress up a bit, this trend may just fill that void for the summer. We all know it's unbearably hot and some days can reach the 90s to 100s in temperature, so since shorts are usually not allowed, just go ahead and grab a pair of gauchos.

More: 6 Ways to wear the awkward culotte trend without looking awkward at all

Style should be about comfort and uniqueness, and when you are someone who needs to dash from work to play, dress up or dress down your funky pair of culottes. I did it my way with a pair of mint green pastel shorts and botanical floral blazer. I usually stick to basic colors when it comes to my trendy pieces but these were a steal at T.J. Maxx. Also, check out 7 ways to wear your culottes to the office without feeling too uptight and dressy.

Here are seven street-style looks to give your stylish brain some ideas for the season:

This color block sweater with a bold blue stripe detail looks great with a pair of crisp black culottes. It all feels casual but stylish.

Look 2

A formal sleeveless top in a bold pop of red really elevates a pair of tailored gaucho trousers. What makes this look über chic is the statement belt cinching at the waist. Complete your day to night look with a pair of high-gloss black pumps.

Your mood with culottes can be feminine with a relaxed vibe like this outfit above. The two-toned floral print screams chic while the oversized top is casual. Bring it all together with a pair of shiny dancing shoes. (Topshop, $60)

Go head-to-toe monotone to elongate your physique. To keep from looking too ordinary, add a contrasting pop of color for your shoes. I love this navy-blue and green outfit!

Look 5

A lightweight boxy, crop top pairs well with wide-leg culottes. Another monochrome work look to flaunt with a funky pair of animal print pumps.

6 Scream Queens spoilers that will make you squirm

We already knew that Scream Queens takes place on a college campus that's rocked by a series of murders that are eerily connected to an accident that took place 20 years ago. Thanks to the insightful panel at San Diego Comic-Con, viewers now have even more details about the freshman season of the series. Here are just a few scary, fun spoilers we've learned about Season 1.

More: Scream Queens' new teaser reveals exciting new twists

1. Jamie Lee Curtis will pay tribute to Halloween

Jamie Lee Curtis

Image: Giphy

The star will give a wink to her iconic Halloween character, Laurie Strode, in the second episode of the premiere season. “There is a wordless homage that I threw in," Curtis teased at the show's San Diego Comic-Con panel, which she also described as "a tipping of my hat to all of you Laurie Strode lovers out there."

2. Curtis will have a fling with someone much younger

Murphy teased a sex scene between Curtis and an 18-year-old. "I wanted to see something irreverent and fun and her being powerful and large and in charge so that’s what we did," he said of the scene. Sounds juicy!

3. You'll see a different side of Lea Michele

Scream Queens Lea Michele

Image: Giphy

As Michele herself put it earlier this year, her character Brittany is “out-of-control crazy, insane and hilarious.” In fact, when she showed up to set on her first day, the actress says many of her costars didn’t even recognize her. "This is like my Charlize Theron in Monster moment,” she said of the role.

4. This is a different kind of anthology than American Horror Story

Though Scream Queens will have a similar format to AHS, there is one major difference. As Murphy explained, "On Scream Queens, there are survivors who go on to a different location, but the characters that you have grown to hopefully love will continue. People will live and people will die. I'm already getting many, many bribes."

5. No one knows who the real killer is

Scream Queens

Image: Giphy

Perhaps the craziest spoiler revealed at Comic-Con? Even the stars of the show don't know who the murderer is yet. In order to keep the mystery hidden, Murphy had each of the series stars do one take where their character is the killer. "So every actor had to get into that mindset," he said. Now that's the way to keep a secret.

6. The killer will show up early on

Though the actors don't know who the killer is, Murphy did reveal that whoever it is will appear in the very first episode. "You definitely meet the killer in that premiere," the show creator said. "And I think if you go back at the end and watch that premiere it's very clear." In other words? Watch very, very closely.

Scream Queens premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 22 on Fox.

Laverne Cox opens up about cultural appropriation and Amandla Stenberg

More: What Laverne Cox wants society to know about straight men dating trans women

The 16-year-old Hunger Games star has long been an outspoken critic of appropriation of black culture by white women, most recently when she slammed Kylie Jenner for wearing her hair in cornrows.

Cox, as a black and trans woman, has plenty to add to the discussion, but she's largely stayed quiet until now.

In a long post to her Tumblr, Cox shares her own thoughts about cultural appropriation, as well as why she's stayed out of the debate until now.

"Whenever I have spoken up and out about issues that are important to me I have tried to do so in ways that illuminate the discussion, put it in historic and cultural perspective with love, empathy and understanding," she writes. "I have never been interested in interpersonal attacks, feuds or ‘checking’ individuals publicly. Whether people perceive my work in that way or not, my intention is always to have conversations with love, empathy, nuance and understanding."

More: Laverne Cox receives a standing ovation from fans for her recent pics

She goes on to give a nod to a viral video created by Stenberg for a high school class. The video highlights the history of cultural appropriation, ultimately asking the question, "What would America be like if we loved black people as much as we love black culture?"

Cox continues, "For me this is the question at the heart of the discussion about cultural appropriation. What of the people whose culture is being mined for the ingredients that can be used in mainstream contexts to spice up the otherwise familiar recipes?"

And Cox hopes her words will inspire others to speak out, listen and learn about appropriation.

"I am writing this in the hopes of continuing a dialogue about this issue in a loving, empathetic way that is not about individual attacks but about individual accountability," she says. "I always hope we can celebrate cultural differences without erasing those from whom the culture originates."

Cosby Show actor opens up about Bill Cosby and how guilty he is

More: Whoopi Goldberg has a change of heart on Bill Cosby's innocence (VIDEO)

Joseph C. Phillips, who played Cosby's son-in-law on The Cosby Show, wrote a powerful blog post about the rape allegations surrounding Cosby that he titled "Of Course Bill Cosby Is Guilty!" In it, Phillips details his experience working for Cosby, who he calls his idol.

"He was my boyhood idol. His influence on my life has been profound. I owe much of who I am to Bill Cosby, so the idea of love seems to fall short of exactly how I feel," begins the post. "The Cos was a ladies man, but also a good father and husband — devoted to his wife and children. Bill was educated; he collected art and was fluent in jazz. After my father, Bill Cosby was the man I aspired to be. Few get an opportunity to meet their idol, much less work with them. I was blessed in that regard, and even more blessed that I found my idol as clever, kind and brilliant as I had imagined."

Phillips also says that it was "common knowledge that Bill played around" on the show's set.

"When I say common knowledge, I mean that it was just something that people seemed to know without anyone saying anything. Bill sleeping around was a fact that, like, the air, seemed to just be. You didn’t have to see it or hear it to know that it existed... there was also the seeming unending parade of pretty young women that streamed through the studio."

More: Bill Cosby's Walk of Fame star stirs up a huge debate

Phillips says a chance meeting with one of Cosby's former mentees, a woman who says "her body and her trust" were violated by the comedian and longtime TV star, made him start rethinking his opinion of Cosby in recent years. He ends the post with a passionate plea to Cosby, saying, "The good Bill has done over the years is real and enduring. I am not prepared to simply dismiss his brilliance, his wisdom, or his legacy... it is with all of the love I still have for him and the reverence of one who has idolized him for a lifetime that I offer this plea. Bill, you have a family who loves you, a wife who is devoted to you; you have more money than you can spend. Please, go live a quiet country life. Allow those of us who truly love you to preserve just a bit of our enchantment."

Sinead O'Connor blasts Kim Kardashian for killing music

More: Rihanna disses her music, even though it launched her career

The Irish singer has never been shy about voicing her opinions, however abrasive they may be, but after her latest outburst, she might want to try some new anger management techniques, because her reaction is a little strong for the situation. Maybe just take a deep breath and count to 10?

O'Connor posted the rant to her Facebook Tuesday about the latest Rolling Stone cover, which features reality star Kim Kardashian.

"What is this c*** doing on the cover of Rolling Stone ? Music has officially died. Who knew it would be Rolling Stone that murdered it? Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh can no longer be expected to take all the blame. Bob Dylan must be f***ing horrified. #BoycottRollingStone (sic)," she wrote.

More: Sinead O'Connor's comments about U2 are so harsh, we're still not over it

While Kim K is definitely a love-her-or-hate-her kind of celeb, O'Connor seems to have gone a little too far with the c-word, at least as far as fans are concerned.

"You know Sinead O'Connor I freaking adore you... however calling anyone the C word especially on social media, and especially given your status in the music world its disappointing (sic)," one fan wrote. Another chimed in about O'Connor's Bob Dylan comment, saying, "Bob Dylan released an album which could only be bought at Starbucks," she wrote. "I don't think Bob Dylan would be as horrified as you think. Rolling Stone is about selling magazines."

This is far from the first time O'Connor has written something extremely inflammatory about another celeb. She's made headlines in recent years for butting heads with Miley Cyrus by claiming Cyrus is "stigmatizing" mental illness. She also famously spoke out about Justin Bieber's role in the music industry, which is "nothing but vampires and pimps," she said.

"The sounds of the records and the videos and how artists look has all been taken over by the industry," O'Connor told Time magazine at the time. "In a way, music's all been silenced. That's why I feel strongly about the oversexualizing of young women. As long as you're visually distracted, you're not really listening. Male artists too. Justin Bieber, he's being sold on his sexuality, but he's too young to even understand what's going on."

11 Dallas hot spots locals absolutely love

$

I never imagined that I would end up calling this city my permanent home — but 2015 marks my eighth year as an official Dallasite. I'd even venture to call myself a local. If you happen to travel towards Dallas sometime in the near future, I suggest that you skip the tourist traps and head to the following locally loved hot spots.

1. For a big time, country style

Never mind that I met my ex-husband at Cowboys Red River — like the classy broad I am — this giant honky-tonk is home to a giant good time. Lace up your boots and step right in for a night of two-stepping with real cowboys. There's even a disco ball made out of a saddle.

2. For killer barbecue

Image: Dave Hensley/Flickr

Skip the barbecue chains and head to Deep Ellum for real Texas barbecue from Pecan Lodge. This joint is a perennial favorite for the best barbecue in Texas. Just make sure you show up early for lunch, since Pecan Lodge closes for the day when it runs out of meat.

3. For an ice-cold beer

Image: Nicholas Henderson/Flickr

Going for a jog through the middle of Dallas? Make a pit stop at Katy Trail Ice House for a cold beer under the live oaks. Beer is great for exercise, after all.

4. For world-class shopping

Dallas is well-known as a shopper's dream come true, and for good reason. It is home to stunning boutiques and internationally recognized designers and artists. If you can only visit one shopping location during your visit, I suggest Highland Park Village. You won't find many deals, but you'll find a beautiful outdoor center that is rich with high-quality shops and unique finds.

5. For an urban oasis

Image: Colette Ngo Ndjon

The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens is nothing short of an oasis in the middle of the big city. The gardens are breathtaking and year-round special events are sure to pique your interest, no matter when you're visiting.

6. For beautiful people

In addition to beautiful shopping, Dallas is known as a home for beautiful people. Check out the sights by hitting Uptown for its nightlife. Hotel ZaZa will not disappoint when it comes to gorgeous people — and the poolside parties in summer are pretty great, too.

7. For respite and a view

Image: Keri Trinkle/Flickr

Need a break from your Dallas adventures? Head to the city center's Klyde Warren Park for food trucks, music and a view of the famous Dallas skyline. The whole park is contained on a downtown overpass.

8. For legendary Tex-Mex

You have many choices when it comes to great Tex-Mex, but your best choice is El Ranchito in Oak Cliff. The place doesn't take itself too seriously, the line is always out the door and mariachi music plays at a deafening level.

9. For the love of nature and science

Image: dickdavid/Flickr

I recently took my daughter and nieces to the Perot Museum of Nature and Science and, as they stared at a gemstone display, they all said, "This place is so cool." It is. And it's educational.

10. For a dirty dive bar

Image: Sheri/Flickr

Deep Ellum is charmingly disgusting, so it's the place to go for a dirty dive bar. I suggest Adair's Saloon for live music, graffiti, strong drinks and a piece of Dallas history. The Dixie Chicks, Jack Ingram and Deryl Dodd have all graced Adair's tiny stage.

11. For local vendors

Image: Steven Legget/Flickr

Finally, peruse the Dallas Farmers Market near Fair Park for fresh food and delightful local wares. If produce isn't your thing, you can pick up beautiful jewelry and unique pieces that will remind you of your trip to this wild metropolis.

Scream: Why Brandon James is not the killer we thought he was

$
0
0

I wish I could say I was surprised Riley was the masked killer's latest victim, but I called it last week. Scream really is strictly adhering to old-school horror movie logic standards. Since the show hasn't thrown us any major curveballs yet, then I think it is safe to assume poor, misunderstood Brandon James was no killer at all. That's right; I'm saying all this talk of Brandon is a major red herring. Brandon didn't go on a killing spree that night, but someone wanted to make it look like he did.

More: Take a look at our Scream killer theories and see if they're holding up

The first clue is in the cold open. Scream took us way back to the massacre by showing us two victims, one of whom admitted to "giving the freak what he deserved." They were both swiftly killed, but the killer was never shown. What would the show have lost by showing us Brandon James' face? It's not the old murders that are supposed to be suspect here, it's the new ones.

I admire the attempt to create suspense by teasing the idea that Brandon James is still among the living, but I think it is safe to say the guy who fell in love with Emma's mother is dead and gone. It's not Brandon James we should be focusing on. If we want to look for a troubling connection to the past, it's Emma's father — the mystery man who taught Emma how to play piano and who is currently being tracked by the police — that we should be thinking about. I propose that he was the original killer and that he set up Brandon out of jealousy or just plain cruelty.

Our modern-day story started with an act of bullying. Emma allowed Nina to film and post Audrey and Rachel in the car. This started the chain of deaths and the killer taunting Emma. Is it because, in the killer's eyes, Emma is no better than her mother and father, both of whom may have been complicit in the bullying and vilifying of Brandon James? After all, the killer insists Emma's mother is a liar. Brandon wasn't Carrie at the prom, but the modern-day killer likes that narrative because it suits his purposes.

The more the show turns our attention to Brandon by dropping hints about how he looked before his surgeries (suggesting he could still be among the living with a different face) and breaking out those dusty old case files, the more likely it seems Brandon is a red herring or, if you will allow me to get Hitchcockian, a McGuffin. I am proposing pursuing Brandon theories is a waste of our theorizing energy. Brandon is just a cover for a modern-day madman, one who is standing right in front of Emma. The killer can only be one of two people: farm boy Will who packs a knife in the back of his pants (too obvious) or new guy Kieran who went out of his way to save Noah, a young man perceived to be an outcast when he first showed up in town.

More: Will is creepy on TV, but here's why Scream star Connor Weil should so be your summer crush

Kieran presents as a hero, but the facts are these: He's new to the community and has an outsider's perspective, he showed an instant and intense fascination with Emma, he has access to boxes full of gruesome case files, thanks to his father being the sheriff, and he doesn't want Emma to come over to his house. Going back to the original Scream, there were two killers, one with a vague motive and the other who was just susceptible to peer pressure. The rule Scream the movie broke was the need for the killer to have a compelling motive. The history lesson the movie gave on a past killer was all for naught because the man in jail for killing the heroine's mother was innocent of the crime. In other words, he was a McGuffin, just like Brandon.

There is no solid motive, just a boy obsessed and ready to take down a group of entitled rich kids one by one. Brandon is just a cover, a decoy to take our attention away from the present day. He was never a murderer, and Emma's life is shrouded in a lie that is causing even her to focus on the wrong clues. Maybe Kieran pieced together the truth about what happened to Brandon, and if he did, he may be deluding himself into thinking he's killing out of a perverted sense of justice. Either that or he and his father are tag-teaming this whole serial killer deal and we've got ourselves a two-for-one crazy special.

More: Looking for your next horror obsession? Check out these spoilers for Fox's Scream Queens

Let's let Brandon rest in peace. It's clear he was a victim in a cruel game, just like Nina, Tyler, Rachel and Riley. He is not the villain of this piece; he's just distracting us from the person behind the mask.

Amy Schumer - Star Wars cover

CNBC's Josh Brown put it best: Amy Schumer's Princess Leia look really is the best thing on the internet today. Schumer will be on the cover of August's issue of GQ, set to release on Monday. So far, very little is known about what's inside the cover. We're not even sure what inspired these geek-tastic pictures. All will be revealed next week, it seems.

More: Amy Schumer wants to make these three changes to The Bachelorette

We do know, though, that once again Schumer is proving you can be funny and sexy at the same time. The pictures are every bit as provocative as you'd expect from a Schumer photo shoot. From orally pleasuring a lightsaber to sucking on C3PO's fingers, Schumer is putting it all out there in an effort to prove sex sells... and that she can still be funny and smart while wearing a Slave Leia bikini. In the photos we've seen, Schumer also spent time in a limo with Yoda and a Wookie. She then hit a cool, seedy bar and danced atop the counter while surrounded by an onslaught of characters from our galaxy and beyond.

We do know Schumer teamed up with GQ during her promotional blitz for the new film Trainwreck, starring Schumer, Bill Hader and, um, LeBron James. The hilarious rom-com hits theaters on Friday, much to the dismay of boyfriends everywhere. This nerdy shoot, much like a trainwreck, is hard to ignore. Perhaps while Schumer shows off what her mama gave her, a few dudes will be more willing to go see the film.

George & Amal Clooney take big steps to get ready for a baby

It appears Clooney really is settling down. The 54-year-old actor has long said that he didn’t want kids and they weren’t a priority to him, but his marriage to Amal Alamuddin has got him feeling paternal.

The 37-year-old human rights lawyer is reportedly undergoing fertility treatments to get pregnant as soon as possible.

More: Jennifer Love Hewitt gives birth, names her son after a literary character

"They recently visited a fertility center," a source told Us Weekly. "This is something they really want."

In fact, the couple, who got married 10 months ago in a celebrity-packed ceremony in Italy, are spending $15 million to remodel their 9,000 square foot mansion in the English countryside — and they have included a baby in their plans.

"The building plans include a nursery," the insider reveals. "They hope to have all the work done by Christmas."

With nine bedrooms and eight bathrooms, there will be plenty of room for more than one baby.

Alamuddin is also slowing down her workload to prepare for motherhood, as the couple decided they didn’t want to wait any longer for a baby.

"They decided that it would be the right time," a source says. "Amal isn’t taking on extra work at the moment and just continuing with the cases she has."

More: Singer Sophie B. Hawkins gives birth at age 50

Just a few months ago in May, Clooney didn’t seem like he was ready for fatherhood, telling Charlie Rose in an interview that he really hasn’t been thinking about kids.

"I've been asked [about kids] a lot lately because I've gotten married and I'm doing a movie with kids in it," he said. "I mean, I've thought about it, I suppose, but it hasn't been high on my list."

What changed his mind? Perhaps seeing his good friend Brad Pitt enjoying his close relationship with his kids or perhaps it was Amal who changed his mind — or he could have wanted kids all along but didn't want to talk to the media about it.

More: Stephen Curry shares sneak peek of adorable baby girl (PHOTO)

Whatever it was, it appears he is taking the plunge. "George is ready for this step and he thinks that Amal will be a great mother," the source confided.

One thing is for sure, if the rumors are true and Amal gets pregnant, you know she will totally rock the maternity fashion.

Or, you know, just be a pleasant flying companion. That is, after all, what businessman Richard Lloyd had in mind when he created it. He claims it is simply a tool you can use to network with others who are on your flight, and might make good business or social connections. However, he does acknowledge its potential to spark something more.

According to the Daily Mail, Lloyd said in the press release, "This is a business tool aimed at making life easier for those wanting to share a cab perhaps into a city or find out who on the flight is going to the same conference as you. But I’m sure there will be some who find it perfect for networking in a social way, all with the best intentions of course. MileHi by name but very much saying hi by nature."

Yeah, right, Mr. Lloyd. We see right through that polite, British exterior.

The app already has the nickname "Tinder of the sky" because it connects people in a very similar way. It uses your location to find nearby users and allows you to swipe right or left based on whether you want to, ahem, engage them or not. You can even find out who your potential flying mates are before you get to your seats, so if you want to sit next to one of them, you can message them ahead of time. This will make that "meet me in the bathroom in five" conversation a lot easier.

More50 Thoughts you have when you finally sign on to Tinder

Lloyd claims he came up with the idea while watching travelers returning from holiday, but I think how he met his wife had something to do with it. He met her when they were in a departure lounge back in 1995, so you can see why he saw potential in an app that helps facilitate the same effect.

MoreJohnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow joined the Mile-High Club (VIDEO)

The app works on both iPhones and Androids — you set it up by plugging in your personal details (occupation, marital status) and your flight details. You can swipe left and right on fellow users in the vicinity, or, if no one's doing it for you on your flight, you can swipe left or right to see passengers on yesterday's or tomorrow's flight. That way, if you like the looks of someone flying into the same city the next day, you can wait for them at baggage claim and pull the old airport pickup line, "business or pleasure?"

Lloyd says the MileHi app is "‘perfect for those who happen to be holidaying at the same destination or city. For example, users could arrange to share a taxi from the arrival airport, exchange tips and ideas on what to visit and where to explore." Or just cut to the chase and grab a hotel room together. The point is, the sky's the limit with this air travel app. OK, I'll stop with the puns.

Vine also gives a bizarre description of Kate as being "under house arrest, lactating like a prize Friesian," while William goes to work with his "glamorous new colleague."

More: Why following Kensington Palace on Instagram will be so bloody cool

Loyal fans of the young royal couple have taken to social media to express their disgust at the article, branding the piece as "rubbish" and "ludicrously suggestive." Some have started referring to the columnist as "Sarah Vile."

We seriously doubt the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are losing any sleep over the column. As a young royal couple, they'll always have the eyes of the world (and its media) upon them, ready to speculate and fill the pages of newspapers.

The notion that Prince William would have his head turned by a woman who vaguely resembles his wife is laughable. What's more grating is the fact that the article warns that "a young father savouring his first taste of freedom since the birth of his second child [...] needs to tread carefully." Isn't it possible that any man in this position adores his wife and children, and doesn't rejoice that he can go to work to escape the chains of family life, but longs to return to them?

State refuses to put both of baby's parents on birth certificate

Specifically, same-sex, legally married couples are finding roadblocks that heterosexual couples are not. Three couples are suing the state of Arkansas for what they feel is an improper delay on issuing correct birth certificates for their children.

The issue seems to be one of language, as birth certificates in Arkansas specifically ask for the mother's name and the father's name. This has caused some families grief because they are not simply allowed to add their partner's name because she is not a "father." And this is causing serious headaches. One couple — Leigh and Jana Jacobs — haven't been able to get their little boy's birth certificate straightened out for nearly a month!

MoreCompany offers breastfeeding moms a surprising new benefit

Now, before you say, "Well, why would they add another parent's name who is not biologically related to the child?" According to the lawsuit, Arkansas does — but only for heterosexual couples. In fact, Arkansas mandates that a hetero spouse is placed on the birth certificate, unless there is a sworn statement that says otherwise. Also, in the case of an unmarried couples, the mother can provide the baby's father's name with a signed affidavit. No other proof is required.

So while the state deals with this lawsuit and contemplates a change to the birth certificate form to reflect gender-neutral parentage, we have to acknowledge the hassle and annoyance these families are going through.

As it stands, same-sex parents are required to get a court order for both of them to appear on a birth certificate. How fair is it, honestly, to expect a family to have to jump through these hoops when their heterosexual peers simply have to put the other parent's name on the form to be considered a legal parent?

A delayed birth certificate can cause all sorts of issues, and whether you're in a same-sex relationship or not, it's easy to understand the frustration that stems from a bureaucratic holdup when such a vital document is on the line. You generally need a birth certificate for things like social security numbers, travel, school registration and sports, so you can see how it can be a pain to have to wait months for a court order.

MoreWaiting too long to name your baby could be dangerous

With only one parent on a birth certificate, it becomes more difficult for the other parent to act on the child's behalf, and we all know how important it is to have a birth certificate as a child moves through life. If there is a delay in issuing one, it can cause all sorts of issues, and having the state government interfere in what should be an easy process is infuriating.

Since same-sex marriage is legal across the United States, issuing birth certificates in this manner should be a no-brainer. Hopefully, some day, it will be.

No-bake mango-chocolate cheesecakes: The cutest party trick ever?

$

I made a simple version that can easily be made in under half an hour and with no cooking or baking involved, just a bit of mixing. Just be mindful of the kind of mangoes you use. I use the Philippine carabao variety, and if you are in other parts of the world, get a variety that is similar to it, like Manila mangoes. The cream cheese you choose has to have a very mild taste — nothing cheesy, or it will taste too heavy. In the end, with a choice of good ingredients, you can have a delicious, simple dessert.

Mini mango cheesecake with chocolate crust in jars

Mini mango cheesecake with chocolate crust in jars recipe

Sweet, ripe mangoes are delicious fruits to eat as is or mixed with desserts. With this no-bake cheesecake, in under half an hour you will have one good reason to keep on having mangoes.

Yields 6

Total time: 25 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 6 ounces chocolate cookies
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 2 cups mild cream cheese (like Philadelphia)
  • 2 tablespoons icing sugar
  • 3 lemons, zest only, divided
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 cups fresh sweet mango pulp (like Manila mangoes), small diced

Directions:

  1. In a food processor, grind the cookies until they become fine crumbs.
  2. To a medium bowl, transfer the cookie crumbs, then add in the cocoa powder and butter, and mix well. Divide the mixture among the 6 jars, and compress it well by pressing with the back of a spoon. Refrigerate while preparing the rest of the cheesecake.
  3. In another small bowl, mix together the cream cheese, icing sugar, 1/2 the lemon zest and the lemon juice well, until the mixture becomes compact. Distribute the mixture among the 6 jars, on top of the cookie crust, and refrigerate again.
  4. Mix the mangoes with the remaining lemon zest. Distribute the mixture among the 6 jars.
  5. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Sherlock's new promo serves as a reminder that Moffat's still sexist (VIDEO)

More: Benedict Cumberbatch talking about sex is what (wet) dreams are made of

The new trailer for a time-jumping, bowler hat-wearing Sherlock promo is everything a giddy fangirl could want. There's talk of missing limbs. The boys are quibbling. Benedict Cumberbatch looks as stunning as ever as Sherlock and Martin Freeman is absolutely huggable as the well-meaning Watson. Even Mrs. Hudson is there to open the door and usher them upstairs.

Perhaps the best part of the trailer, though, is how utterly self-aware it is. Upon returning to 221B, Watson is immediately inundated with sass from the lovely Hudson, telling him she's already read his newest story and that, frankly, she doesn't appreciate how she's treated. All she does is open the door and usher people in. It's exactly what Sherlock fans have complained about for some time now. Watson's response?

"Well, within the narrative, that is, broadly speaking, your function."

More: Obviously, Moffat is pushing for a Doctor/Clara romance

Oh, Moffat, you wry, wry fellow. For years this is exactly what women (and the men we love most) have accused Moffat of doing and it seems that, in just 10 words, he's acknowledged our complaint. It's a complaint, of course, that he's long disputed. Complaints of a lack of females on the production side of things has led Moffat to the atrocious remarks that women don't seem to want to write for Doctor Who and that we need to grow up more first. After asking for a stronger, less flirtatious female on Doctor Who, we were given Moffat's Sherlock rewrite of "The Woman." In Arthur Conan Doyle's tale, she was an adventuress and one of the few humans who could outwit Sherlock. In Moffat's version, she was a dominatrix. That's worthy of neither a #YouTried or a #CloseEnough. It's sexism at its ugliest and Moffat at his usual.

Think we're alone in this belief? Up until the most recent season of Sherlock, a smart, lovely blog was maintained on Tumblr, called STFUMoffat, that brilliantly picked apart and showcased his biggest affronts to women's equality. The newest season was so littered with annoyances for any intelligent female fan that even the moderators said, "F*** it. He's not worth it." They stopped writing. And if you google "Moffat Sexist," you will find page after page of rants of this very type. It's too much.

Mrs. Hudson sasses Watson, "I'm your landlady. Not a plot device." And we'll take it one step further. Mr. Moffat, we are your viewers, not your sex appeal. This new, self-aware trailer better be the beginning of something new, honest and actually kind toward women. Or we may not be your viewers for much longer.

INTERVIEW: How UnREAL gave Johanna Braddy a new respect for women

More: UnREAL will make you never, ever want to go on The Bachelor

Although these two series are incredibly different, Braddy was able to gain some unique perspective on the pressures women face in all types of situations. Filming a show about the behind-the-scenes of a reality show taught Braddy just how misrepresented a woman can be. Braddy's character, Anna, experienced this manipulation firsthand, giving Braddy insight into what happens to so many women on these shows.

SheKnows: Was it empowering getting to reveal what this industry is really like?

Johanna Braddy: Yeah, I think it's something the world needs to see. Reality shows are everywhere... and for years the public has no idea there's so much manipulation. I mean, I didn't. I learned so much just from reading the first episode. I think it's really something that needs a lot of light shed on it. I find that a lot of people will pre-judge a lot of the characters when we really don't even know what the whole story is. So much of it is editing of who they're making look like a bad person.

SK: Do you have more sympathy or understanding for women on these shows now?

JB: I watched one season of The Bachelor and found myself kind of disliking the person they villainize and then after reading the episode where they did that to my character, I was like, "Oh, my gosh, we have no clue what's really going on in this woman's life. She could be the kindest person and we have no idea." But I also don't understand why anyone would sign up for these shows.

More: 6 Ways Lifetime's UnREAL seems totally unreal

SK: Dating shows like this are often said to be solely based off looks. How do you think this affects the women competing for love and the women watching at home?

JB: I think there's way too much priority put on looks these days for women. But I hope people realize it's all fake. Hair, makeup, lighting and Photoshop only do so much... the right guy is going to love what's inside and not just what's outside. And if you do get with someone just because of their looks, it just puts a pressure on the relationship in the future and brings a whole other bucket of insecurities. Focus on the inside and being a good person and loving other people. That's key, too — not getting so self-involved.

Johanna Braddy in UnREAL

Filming Quantico, Braddy was able to experience how women are sometimes underestimated and overlooked, especially in a setting like an FBI training camp. Braddy's character in Quantico, Shelby, is much different from Anna and much more suited to Braddy's personality, in her opinion. Having grown up in the South around guns and the outdoors, Braddy believes she fits the character of Shelby perfectly.

SK: Did you have trouble proving yourself as someone who could play such a tough character?

JB: I think that's why I fit this character. That's kind of the whole deal with Shelby. Completely underestimated. She's this Southern debutante and people assume she's not going to be successful based on her looks. I think I definitely fit her character.

SK: Did filming Quantico give you a newfound respect for female recruits?

JB: Oh, my gosh, yeah. We got to work with federal agents every day. It's a crazy process for women, proving themselves every day. In this community, they don't have makeup or anything. It's exposing. They're stripped down to the basics and thrown into these challenges with men. There are frustrating different physical expectations. In the pilot episode, one of the characters wanted to do the men's physical fitness test, so we showed some of that.

Whether you're fighting for a man's heart or fighting to be a federal agent, it seems that women can face challenges and disadvantages in any competitive atmosphere. Knowing now what goes into both, Braddy feels confident about which obstacles she would rather face.

SK: In both shows there's an element of competition — people being voted off one by one. How do the two differ, and how are they similar?

JB: Similar in the sense that you're fighting for your life. In UnREAL it's more personal because it's not about career or abilities; it's who you are as a person and how you affect this one man. It's way more exposing why you'd get eliminated. Quantico is survival of the fittest. Not about personality but skill set.

SK: So which competition would you rather be in?

JB: FBI for sure! No way would I ever want to be on one of those dating shows. Also, I've always wanted to be an FBI agent. It's my dream job. I was an FBI agent for Halloween last year and my friends made me a fake badge. It was awesome.

6 Ways Robin Williams' last film trailer ever will break your heart (VIDEO)

Robin Williams Last Film Trailer

Robin Williams Last Film Trailer

1. It's a poignant reminder of how truly talented — and versatile — he was

The world knew and loved Robin Williams primarily as a man whose talent to incite laughter was relatively unparalleled. In short, he was hilarious. While we loved him in the dramatic roles that were a marked departure from classically funny fare like Mrs. Doubtfire, it sometimes slips our minds how fantastic he was in those darker roles. In this clip from his final film, Boulevard, we see a man who is broken. We see a man who is breaking someone else. We see a brilliantly faceted actor.

More: Fans prepare for heartbreak with Robin Williams' final film (VIDEO)

2. It forces you to consider that he, too, was hiding part of himself

It's almost impossible to watch this sliver of the film and not draw comparisons to Williams' personal life. In Boulevard, Williams stars as a suburban husband and father struggling to come to terms with his sexual orientation. His character is hiding part of himself, and it became evident with the end of Williams' life that — although he had openly discussed his depression — he was hiding part of himself from the world as well. It's a heartbreaking parallel.

3. It makes you wonder what kind of emotional toll it took on him

Knowing Williams' history with depression and the undercurrent of sadness that he lived with, it's not hard to imagine that tackling a role that required him to dredge up so much visceral emotion would have been a painful process. In the trailer, he looks defeated — not his character, but Williams himself. Is this simply a projection? Or did the role require more than Williams had to give?

More: Zelda Williams is struggling to return to a happy life after Dad (VIDEO)

4. You realize he poured the last bit of himself into a role that could help others

The film looks phenomenal. It looks like the kind of movie that will eat you up and spit you out, in the best kind of way. That's typically only true of movies in which the actors left everything on the stage, so to speak. It's clear Williams did just that and, considering the emotional toll it may have taken on him, he did it for a role that could very well open doors for a lot of people to have the hard-yet-necessary conversations with loved ones that preface the healing process.

5. It drives you to take a hard look at yourself

The truth is, seeing Williams in this capacity again — onscreen, entertaining others and in a role that speaks to the masks people wear — reminds us all that we never know what someone else has going on under the surface. Although many of us never got to know Williams on a personal level, there is likely someone like him in all our lives. Someone who constantly treads water to keep afloat, someone who puts on a happy face but suffers immensely on the inside. Could we be kinder? Could we be less judgmental?

6. It makes you want more

And it makes you realize there will be no more. This was, indeed, Williams' last role. With a 59-second clip, he makes the world fall in love with him all over again. And, for that suspended minute in time, we can't wait to see what he does next.

People of all ages say what love means to them and it's so perfect (VIDEO)

That's what happened to many of the people who were asked that question on camera by Soul Pancake. It's such an all-encompassing word, that few knew how to articulate their thoughts on it immediately. A few found themselves totally stumped, while others started quoting the iconic movie Love Story — "Love means never having to say you're sorry." Everyone had a moment though, whether it be a reflective moment, or a spurt of laughter, or genuine shock at the sheer weight of the word "love".

MoreThe best marriage advice from those who’ve succeeded — and failed

I found some of the most honest answers came from kids (naturally), because they weren't afraid to admit that the answer is "complicated." The range of answers was as wide as the spectrum of ages represented. Some had a cynical perspective — one guy said, "Love is the greatest marketing campaign ever invented" — while others connected the word to doing something you wouldn't do normally just to be with the person for which you feel it. However, while no one definition was the same, everyone agreed in one way or another that love is a powerful thing. Check out all the various definitions below.

love is

love is

More9 Pictures capture what it feels like to be young and in love

I love so many of these responses, but my favorite was the 31-year-old girl who really took her time to come up with an answer, and just managed, "I don't know, it's pretty great, I guess you can't describe it." I feel the same. Love to me holds so many different meanings, it's impossible to sum up in one definition. Just grammatically speaking, it's a noun, it's a verb — you can use it to affect others, or it can easily be turned around and affect you. If we feel like we're lacking it, we search for it endlessly everyday. As a writer, there's never a time I'm not writing on an aspect of it, and even though I feel like I've found it, keeping it strong and flowing is a constant effort.

Like fire, it's difficult to contain, and even if you have, it's so intense and intangible, you feel like you might lose it at any moment. But, I suppose, that's what makes it so powerful. If we could nail it down easily, and pin a meaning on it, we wouldn't strive for it so relentlessly.

I'm one of those people who says "love" a lot, maybe in part because I think if I spread it around it will keep coursing stronger in my life and in the world. Love has bound me to people who have made my existence better and brighter, and based on this video, I think it does the same for many many others. From 5 to 105, people know it's a strong, beautiful, complicated, wonderful thing. So even if you don't know how to define it for yourself, if you feel it, don't be afraid to say it out loud.
