Ben & Jerry's celebrates SCOTUS ruling with 'I Dough, I Dough' ice cream

$

In honor of the Supreme Court ruling, Ben & Jerry's announced that the classic Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough will be renamed "I Dough, I Dough." That's right — Ben & Jerry's is using their signature flavor. There's something truly touching about this choice; this flavor has always existed, it has been beautiful from the beginning and the only thing that's changed is the legal stuff. But the legality is important — it is an official, undeniable step that no one can ignore.

But this isn't even the best part — 100 percent of the proceeds go to the Human Rights Campaign. In other words, Ben & Jerry's is honoring this historic day by celebrating and continuing to fight, as they share in the video below. That is what we all need to do. When it comes to gender and sexual freedom in this country, we have a long way to go. This step is an example of what more needs to come. So let's rejoice, and keep going. And eat some ice cream.

7 Apps that make moving to a new city a breeze

1. Meetup

Looking for a way to meet up with like-minded groups of people to grab some coffee or take an outdoor adventure? Meetup is your answer. It helps you meet new people in the area who share common interests. The best part is that there is no romantic context. Sure, you can keep your Tinder for the occasional date (or whatever you use Tinder for... ), but this app offers a great alternative to help you find some friends.

2. How Much Speed do I Need?

Wi-Fi is essential. Unfortunately, that makes the process of finding reliable Wi-Fi essential too. The "How Much Speed do I Need" tool can help here by providing a custom internet speed based on the number of devices you will be connecting and how you intend to use them (for Netflix, music, games, etc.). Once you've got your speed, you can enter in the zip code of your new home to find a comparison list of providers who offer what you need in the area.

3. Uber (or Lyft!)

Uber and Lyft allow you to "call" for a ride with just the touch of a button. They provide you with notifications for when your ride is on its way, when it's close and when it has arrived at your location. The best part? Both apps store your payment info for easy management of fares. On top of this, the fares are typically cheaper than taxi fares.

4. Walk Score

This nifty tool "WalkScore" provides a score for how easily you can walk or bike around the city for your daily activities. It also helps you scope out your new neighborhood for apartments, attractions, restaurants and more. If you're new to town, this is an incredible resource to help you plan out daily transportation needs and potential hot spots for shopping and dining.

5. Like a Local

You can use this app "Like a Local" to check out local favorites for cafes, restaurants and bars in your area. All content is provided by locals, so you're getting the straight, unbiased opinions of people who have actually been to each location.

6. Gas Buddy

GasBuddy could be a lifesaver for you if you plan to commute to your job in your new city. It helps you locate nearby gas stations and compare them to identify your cheapest options. You can view full maps and charts with gas pricing and calculate your trip cost to determine how much you will be spending on gas as you commute each day.

7. Offer Up

Once you've settled into your new spot, you might realize that you need some smaller furniture items and/or a few gadgets to fill up extra space. The Offer Up app gives you access to a feed of items being sold near you. You can connect with others to purchase gently used items like electronics, furniture and jewelry at a great price. On the flip side of this, if you find that you need to sell a few things to accommodate smaller square footage, you can do so easily through Offer Up as well!

Slice-and-bake firework cookies you'll ooh and ahh over

You can buy colored sugar in the baking aisle, but I find it's much cheaper to make your own for these cute and colorful cookies.

fireworks sugar cookies

Start by making the cookie dough. This recipe uses egg whites instead of whole eggs to make the dough white rather than yellow.

Spread the dough out between 2 pieces of plastic wrap on a cutting board, rolling it into a rectangle about 1/8 inch thick. Refrigerate the dough for about 30 minutes.

colored sugar

While the dough is chilling, mix up your red and blue sugars. Add gel food coloring to the sugar, and mix really well with a fork until it's uniform and bright in color.

patriotic slice and bake cookies

Pull out the dough, and remove the top piece of plastic wrap. Sprinkle the dough with patches of red and blue sugar. Maybe it's because I read a lot to my toddler, but doesn't it look like a Seussical character?

easy slice and bake cookies

Now start at one end, and use the plastic wrap to help you roll the dough tightly. Wrap the log in the plastic wrap, and refrigerate at least 30 minutes. You can also refrigerate it overnight.

Unwrap the log, and use a sharp knife to slice off sections about 1/2 inch thick.

Bake for about 15 minutes at 325 degrees F, until the edges just start to turn golden. These cookies will keep in an airtight container for several days and are perfect for eating while watching fireworks.

Slice-and-bake firework cookies

For this cookie recipe, you really want white dough to contrast with the red and blue sugar. If you can't find white salted butter, you can sub coconut oil plus 1/2 teaspoon of kosher salt. You can save time on July 4th by making the rolled log of dough in advance and keeping it wrapped in the fridge up to three days before slicing and baking.

Serves 20

Prep time: 10 minutes | Inactive time: 1 hour | Bake time: 15 minutes | Total time: 1 hour 25 minutes

Ingredients:

For the cookie dough

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup salted butter, at room temperature
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large egg whites

For the sugar

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • Red gel food coloring
  • Blue gel food coloring

Directions:

  1. Into a medium bowl, sift the flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
  2. Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
  3. Mix in the egg whites.
  4. Mixing on low speed, add the flour mixture just until it is incorporated and a soft, smooth dough forms.
  5. Spread the dough out between 2 pieces of plastic wrap on a cutting board, rolling it into a rectangle about 1/8 inch thick, and then refrigerate the dough for about 30 minutes.
  6. While the dough is chilling, mix up your sprinkles by dividing the granulated sugar into 2 bowls and using a fork to whisk blue gel into one and red into the other.
  7. Pull out the dough, and remove the top piece of plastic wrap.
  8. Sprinkle the dough with patches of red and blue sugar.
  9. Starting at one end, use the plastic wrap to help you roll the dough tightly. Wrap the log in the plastic wrap, and refrigerate it for at least 30 minutes or up to 3 days.
  10. Heat the oven to 325 degrees F, and line a baking sheet with parchment.
  11. Unwrap the log, and use a sharp knife to slice off sections about 1/2 inch thick. Spread the cookies an inch apart on the baking sheet.
  12. Bake for about 15 minutes, until the edges just start to turn golden, and then place on a wire rack to cool.

Once you see how easy my truffles are to make, you'll be making them year round, for teacher and hostess gifts, holiday parties, birthday parties and more. Let's start with this Fourth of July American flag!

Dark chocolate truffles

Ingredients:

  • 20 ounces semisweet chocolate
  • 16 ounces cream cheese, softened at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 36 ounces white chocolate (preferably chocolate melting discs)
  • Red and blue food coloring

Truffle Flag

Directions:

1. Melt the semisweet chocolate in the microwave, double boiler or bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Set aside.
2. In a mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese until light and fluffy.

Truffle Flag

3.Beat in the powdered sugar and vanilla.

Truffle Flag

4. Beat in the melted chocolate.

Truffle Flag

5. Transfer the mixture to a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover with plastic and refrigerate until firm enough to shape into balls (about 30 minutes).

Truffle Flag

6. Shape about 1/3 of the chocolate mixture into 48 small (marble-size) balls and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Shape the remaining chocolate mixture into 48 larger balls. If your hands get sticky, rinse with a little water and keep them a little damp (this prevents the chocolate from sticking to your hands). Place the baking sheet in the freezer for 15 minutes.

Truffle Flag

7. Melt the white chocolate in the microwave, double boiler or bowl over a saucepan of simmering water.

8. Divide the melted chocolate three ways, placing about 1/3 in one bowl, almost 2/3 in another bowl and about 1/3 cup in a pastry bag fitted with a writing tip (or plastic freezer bag with one corner snipped). To the bowl with 1/3 of the melted white chocolate, add several drops of blue food coloring and mix well. To the bowl with about 2/3 of the melted white chocolate, add several drops of red food coloring and mix well.

Truffle Flag

9. Drop the smaller balls into the blue chocolate and turn to coat. Remove with a fork and transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet to harden. Do the same with the larger balls and red chocolate. If the chocolate starts to harden, making it difficult to dip, add a little vegetable oil, and reheat in the microwave for 10 seconds. Stir until smooth. Arrange the red and blue truffles on a foil-lined baking sheet as pictured below.

Truffle Flag

10. Using the white chocolate-filled pastry bag, place one white dot on each blue truffle (to represent a star) and draw a line across the red truffles, to resemble white stripes.

Truffle Flag

Enjoy!

Note: When melting the chocolate in the microwave, use the defrost power setting and stir the chocolate every 30 seconds (some chocolate will keep its shape until stirred).

Woman bites into a Krispy Kreme doughnut and gets an unexpected filling

Her first gooey, much-anticipated bite wasn’t quite what she expected. In fact, it was quite rubbery. What should have been a flood of caramel coming out of the fried pastry, was inhibited with a strange blue material that turned out to be a latex glove.

Rubber glove in doughnut

Rubber glove in doughnut

"I picked their new edition one as I'd not had one [of the ones] without the hole in it before, so the filling was going to be a surprise," Ria Findley told the Evening Standard. Mistake. There’s a reason I have a strict no-filling policy when it comes to baked goods, and this incident proves my theory.

More: Krispy Kreme's KKK Wednesday proves to be a major marketing FAIL, obviously

"Three bites in and we are discussing the cream fillings when I notice a bright blue inside. I poke around and that's when we realised it was a prep glove," she said. To make matters worse, Findley is seven months pregnant. And she notes that her gag reflex was fully engaged.

Findley contacted Tesco, where the doughnuts were purchased, and Krispy Kreme to report the incident. Both Tesco and Krispy Kreme responded and offered her a refund and free doughnuts, respectively. But, as you might imagine, Findley has no intention of indulging in her free pastries. "It's always tradition in our office to get Krispy Kremes in on your birthday... Not any more," she said.

In a statement to the Mirror, a spokesperson for Krispy Kreme said, "Krispy Kreme has an exemplary food safety record and we endeavour to take care at all stages of our food production process to ensure that products are produced in a hygienic and safe manner."

We give them points for at least attempting to use gloves during food prep, however we'd recommend that they keep better track of them.

If any lesson can be learned here, it's that doughnuts should have holes. Plain and simple. Avoid the ones with filling, you never know what you are going to get.

Grodd hinted at the celebration when he sent this anniversary tweet with a photo of what looks like Faddoul getting her bride on.

While any other details are pretty much nonexistent, the couple has spoken about their wedding plans in the past.

"We actually really want to customize our wedding to contribute to the Bachelor Nation. And, so, we’re planning in the process and we actually are designing a perfume line. My perfume is actually what I’ll be wearing on my wedding day so I’m really excited about that," Faddoul told Us in January.

"Clare Crawley, Michelle Money, there are several Bachelor people who will definitely make the list as well as our bridal party."

Grodd competed unsuccessfully for Andi Dorfman's affections on Season 10 of The Bachelorette. Faddoul escaped the clutches of the most hated Bachelor of all time when she failed to nab the final rose from Juan Pablo Galavis during Season 18.

Terminator Genisys: Emilia Clarke talks "being naked in a harness"

Terminator Genisys isn't so much a sequel or reinvention of the Terminator franchise that made Arnold Schwarzenegger a star but more of an alternate timeline. It takes place within the well-established world of the time-traveling war machines and those they protect.

More: Emilia Clarke's nude stage debut titillates Broadway

Clarke takes over the role of Sarah Conner, first inhabited by Linda Hamilton way back in 1984, when female action heroes were just entering mainstream cinema. But of course, Clarke has plenty of experience being a woman warrior, given that she plays the Khaleesi on Game of Thrones. We asked Clarke if her experience as the Mother of Dragons helped her in any way.

"I'd grown up watching the Terminator movies and being continually inspired by Linda's incredible performance, so I jumped at the chance to take on this role. It was after that fact that the daunting realization of the enormity of the part sunk in," Clarke said.

"There were many elements of my work on Game of Thrones that were helpful to try and harness her inner badass. But the difference between the two is that in Game of Thrones I do a lot of delegating and here, in this movie, I really have to get down and dirty and do a lot of the stunts and gun work and everything. There are silmilaries, but Sarah Conner is a whole other kind of badass."

Terminator Genisys

But the biggest help came from the Governator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, when dealing with the weaponry and stunts.

"[Schwarzenegger] was very helpful! I definitely needed a lot of help," Clarke said. "I spent most of my training hoping that he would be impressed. Getting a good response from him was a helpful thing to give me the confidence to continue on."

One peculiar quirk about the time traveling done in the Terminator universe is that the characters must travel naked, creating the potential for some real awkwardness on set. But the male actors didn't seem to mind.

Terminator Genisys

Jai Courtney, who plays Kyle Reese in the film, said, "It was totally liberating doing the stunts naked." However, Clarke didn't seem quite as thrilled.

"Being naked in a harness is... fun," she said, clearly a bit embarrassed.

But bodybuilder Schwarzenegger had his own take on it, saying naked stunts really are fun. "They're embarrassing and they lead to funny conversations. Inevitably, you have to do it, and so what? I don't think there's anyone here who has anything to hide."

Clarke bashfully disagreed. "I can think of a few things I tried to hide."

We feel you, girl!

DIY color upgrade for your frames

taped frame

If you are dying for a little bit of color around you but are not ready to commit to any permanent changes, which would require painting or buying new items, I have an excellent solution for you. Simple ideas are always the best, which is why using masking tape to change colors of your wall decor is so great. You can transform any of your frames into bright and cheerful statements by adding a bit of washi tape to the edges. What's so great about it? You can remove it anytime you want, or try a different color and it won't leave any marks or make permanent changes. Never underestimate the power of masking tape!

taped frame 2

The application is very simple: All you have to do is apply one or two rows of masking tape (depending on the size of your frame) to the edges. It looks really neat, the colors are rich and the desired effect is achieved. If you are not sure what color to use, try doing a test by sticking a few different masking tapes to the border of your frame to see which one you like most. It doesn't have to be colorful tape. You might as well try with black and white.

Jill and Derek Dillard allegedly distancing themselves from the Duggars

According to RadarOnline, the young couple filled paperwork to begin Dillard Family Ministries on June 17. Derick also quit his job at Walmart, where he worked in the accounting department, not too long before that on June 10.

More: Josh Duggar is back on social media for one reason (PHOTO)

"This new ministry is their 'Plan B' now that it's unlikely their reality show will be coming back," the outlet's source revealed.

The business filing shows that the couple plans to co-direct the new company, though the purpose behind it all remains to be seen. Fans have speculated that the couple might be planning a mission to Nepal, which is where they first met.

More: The Duggars' lies might go deeper than the molestation scandal

But, with a newborn baby, that trip might just be a work in progress. The couple welcomed their first child, a baby boy named Israel, back in April.

Since that happy news, things have unfortunately gone downhill for the Duggar family. News surfaced in May that Josh Duggar had inappropriately touched his sisters and other young girls when he was a teenager. Despite countless public appearances and social media statements from the Duggar family to attempt to mitigate the situation, their time as a picture-perfect family has seemingly come to an end.

More: Jill Duggar's one-year anniversary pics spark unnecessary debate (PHOTOS)

And while it's justifiable that Derick and Jill would be ready to move on to a new adventure, their new business has also caused speculation that it isn't just a career change, but also a path change — away from the rest of the family and the scandal that still haunts them.

Do you think the timing of the career change is just coincidental, or is it because Derek and Jill are hoping to distance themselves from the family?

Bella Thorne opens up about interacting with heroin addicts for upcoming film

$

Thorne is as talented as she is beautiful. At just 17, she already has dozens of films and television projects under her belt and is in high demand in Hollywood, giving her the freedom to be very picky when it comes to choosing roles. We asked her why she wanted to play Amanda in Lifetime's new film Perfect High, about a high school girl who gets addicted to pain meds, then heroin.

More: Chelsea Kane on why #PopFan was utterly terrifying

"People just don’t know how easy it is to get addicted to prescription drugs," Thorne said. "A large percentage of heroin users start off by becoming addicted to prescription drugs given to them by their doctor for an injury. Heroin is becoming a street drug, which is really crazy. I just want people to know, especially parents, that if they think heroin is done by dirty, bad people in a crack alley, that's just not how it is."

Thorne said everyone is vulnerable. "It happens to innocent, good people all the time. It’s so, so hard to stop. In this movie, we not only show how it happens but where it comes from. A lot of other movies don’t want to show you that part. They don’t want you to experience it, but we do. We show you how it feels and why the characters get addicted so you understand."

Perfect High

Image: Lifetime

To portray a heroin user, Thorne did a lot of research. "We interviewed heroin addicts, we interviewed their best friends. We watched people on it," she said, adding that there was even someone on set who had experienced heroin and who she could consult when she needed to.

Thorne told us the one thing that most surprised her in her research was that people can live for years as a heroin addict and their best friends don’t know. "Heroin addicts are really good at covering it up, let me tell you. They're so ashamed, they'll do anything to hide their injection sites, using makeup or their hair to make it look different — it's scary," she said.

Another shocker for Thorne was the easy way so many teens get their drugs. "A lot of kids get addicted going through their parents' medicine cabinets," Thorne said. "Hello! Go lock up your medicine cabinets. That's why we made this movie, to shine some light on it."

More: Is Lifetime's violence, murder, incest what women really want to watch?

Perfect High

Image: Alec Watson

The film's director, Vanessa Parise (#PopFan), helped Thorne with the research as well as guiding her emotional performance. "We watched lots of documentaries and news footage of teenage kids doing heroin, and we Skyped with former addicts. That way, we knew what we were going for from the outside in," Parise said. "From there, it was my job to help Bella get there emotionally, in a way that was real and personal for her."

But Thorne's incredible talent made Parise's job much easier. "Bella is amazing. She’s uber-smart, incredibly mature and thoughtful, and beautifully open. She works hard and she also knows how to have fun. She is serious, and yet doesn’t take herself too seriously," said Parise.

Despite growing up in the limelight, Thorne says she’s never felt pressure to take drugs but that she does’t really hang out in the Hollywood scene: "I'm pretty much with my besties all the time, hanging out at my house or chilling in my loft room, watching Netflix, slurping a big Cup o' Noodles."

  • 12 chicken drumettes
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

  3. Add the wings to the prepared baking sheet. Cook for 20 minutes, flip, and cook for another 20 minutes until fully cooked.

6 Common dog ailments all pet owners should know

$
0
0

1. Periodontal disease

"Dental disease is the most common disease in dogs and cats with most authorities reporting that the majority of cats and dogs over the age of 3 years old have some degree of dental disease," states Starkey. "All pets should have a physical exam with a veterinarian at least once a year to maintain optimal oral health."

Watch for:

  • Bad breath. Many people come to expect this from their pet; however, a pet with no dental disease should have largely inoffensive breath.
  • Visible buildup on teeth (known as calculus)
  • Red, inflamed gums with or without discharge
  • Loss of gums around the base of teeth and potentially loose teeth

2. Arthritis

According to Starkey, osteoarthritis, or simply arthritis, is a common canine malady that occurs when cartilage in a dog's joints wears down, causing joint inflammation. "The condition mostly affects the knees and hips in dogs and may occur as part of the aging process, or it may occur secondary to a traumatic incident, such as a fracture extending into the joint or a cruciate ligament rupture," the pet expert explains.

Watch for:

  • Stiffness, especially in the morning, when getting up after lying down and/or during cold weather
  • Lameness (abnormal walking or running characterized by favoring one or more legs), usually worsens after exercise

3. Ear infection

An ear infection is a common canine condition that may be caused by mites, fungus, allergies and foreign bodies like foxtails and grass awns. Ear infections are particularly common in dogs with long ears that hang down, such as cocker spaniels, or pups with large amounts of fur in their ears, like poodles, and in dogs that swim frequently. Starkey says dogs with upright ears are at less risk because the upright position helps keep the ear canal dry.

Watch for:

  • Frequent head shaking
  • Vigorous scratching at one or both ears
  • Bad smell from one or both ears
  • Redness and discharge from the ear that is infected
  • Pain, typically noticed when one touches the ears or base of ears

4. Hot spots

Hot spots, also called moist dermatitis or pyotraumatic dermatitis, are painful, intensely itchy skin lesions typically characterized by fur loss and discharge. "They are more common in dogs during the spring and summer months as both heat and humidity levels rise," Starkey explains. Hot spots can be caused by many things, from allergies to anxiety, and it's always important to have them examined by a veterinarian. "The lesions may by more extensive or more serious than they first appear to the untrained eye."

Watch for:

  • Sudden development of a painful area of fur loss with redness of underlying skin and possible discharge
  • Excessive scratching of the affected area. The pet may scratch with a paw and or rub the affected area on carpet or furniture.

5. Overweight and obesity

Even though you may think portly pets are cute or funny, obesity or being overweight is an epidemic health problem in dogs. "Certain dog breeds, such as Labrador retrievers or corgis, are more prone to obesity, but the condition is widespread among all dog breeds and mixed breeds," said Starkey. Excessive weight may contribute to diseases like arthritis as well as certain heart and lung conditions.

Watch for:

  • Overweight in appearance
  • Increased weight or a weight that is unusually high for the breed as measured by a scale
  • Loss of your dog's waist when it is viewed from the side (loss of the normal upward angle of the belly as it runs from the chest to the hips)
  • Loss of or inability to see or feel your dog's ribs

6. Diarrhea

Though diarrhea isn't a disease, it is a common symptom of a number of other diseases. Starkey says, "Diarrhea has one of the largest number of possible causes of any clinical sign seen in dogs.

"Apart from your dog having an occasional or very short-term bout of mild diarrhea, this symptom needs to be evaluated by a veterinarian," Dr. Starkey advises. Regardless of the cause, the sooner your pet is seen by a vet, the sooner it will be diagnosed, treated and relieved of the condition.

Vogue just made a wildly homophobic statement about Cara Delevingne

$

We are living in such a pivotal and important time for LGBT rights, which makes it all the more distressing that Vogue, a magazine that would not be the force it is without the LGBT community, would have made the astonishing and distasteful decision to publish an anti-gay profile. The piece in question is written about famed rising-star supermodel Cara Delevingne's homosexuality, characterizing her lesbianism as "a phase."

The term itself is paternalistic, dismissive and condescending. It supposes that female sexuality is not as serious as male sexuality. Therefore, whatever we do together can be construed as a "phase" or a "whim" and the idea that two women can enjoy real love is not anything serious, but something that we will soon get over once the right man comes along.

This is an idea that lesbians have been fighting against for centuries. In his book Homosexuality: A History, Colin Spencer paints a very vivid picture that female homosexuality was not even considered since there is no penetration, therefore, no actual sex could be taking place. Plus it's two women, so who cares about them anyway?

The insult is threefold. It supposes that two gorgeous women, Cara Delevingne and her girlfriend singer Annie Clark (better known as St. Vincent) couldn't be a serious couple because they're beautiful and successful. It also supposes that their youth means they aren't careful decision makers and whatever is going on between them is not authentic and it further supposes that Vogue, the arbiters of all things fashion, are also the arbiter of all things... period.

Annie Clark lives in my neighborhood. I have seen her with Cara and the connection between them is indisputable. Further supported by Cara Delevingne's Instagram and Twitter pages where she professes her love for Annie.

The Vogue piece by Rob Haskell goes on to suggest that Cara loves women because of a damaged relationship with a parent. He says, "When I suggest to Cara that to trust a man, she might have to revise an old and stubborn idea of hers, that women are perennially troubled and therefore only women will accept her, her smile says she concedes the point."

In response, author Julie Rodriguez emphatically stated that to equate same-sex relationships with childhood trauma "is a harmful (and false) stereotype that lesbian and bisexual women have been combating for decades."

Even if their relationship doesn't endure the rest of their lives (the vast majority of our relationships do not), even if that is the case this singling out is still belittling, inappropriate and unfair. Their relationship is just as legitimate as any other couple, gay, straight or otherwise.

Come home to the delicious smell of baked beans that are cooked and ready to eat thanks to your personal chef, the slow cooker. Baked beans make the best side dish because they're one of those comfort foods that is always a crowd-pleaser. They also make a great main dish. Just eat them as is, or add some leftover meat to the beans for a super-quick and easy meal.

slow cooker baked beans with honey mustard

These slow-cooked baked beans are made with two types of mustard — good old yellow mustard and Dijon mustard — which taste wonderful when combined with the sweet flavor of the honey and brown sugar.

My favorite part about these baked beans — besides how delicious they are — is how easy it is to make them. Just add the ingredients to the slow cooker, put the lid on, set the cooking time, and I'm done. My friend the slow cooker takes over from there. How great is that?

How to make your precious pet part of your wedding

In fact, the only other person who might rival the place it holds in your heart is your fiancé. To that end, it would only be right to want to share one of the most important days of your life with your furry buddy. Yes, sometimes involving pets in wedding plans can be hokey or problematic, but there are plenty of ways to avoid issues and create some seriously adorable moments.

Here are some super-cute and creative ways to incorporate your fluffy friends into your impending nuptials. And, yes, I intend to steal at least two of these for my own wedding.

1. Put them on your Save the Date

Image: MyPrimativeBoutique/Etsy

The signs are great on their own, but the hat and veil...oh, the hat and veil.

2. The perfect engagement photo accent

Image: Jennifer Longaway/Flickr

Or the star of your engagement photos. Sorry, this pup's just way cuter than your love.

3. Give your pup the job of ring bearer

Image: Ryan G. Smith/Flickr

Putting the rings on the side of his head like that means he probably won't eat them.

4. Make your cat a groomsman

Image: Steve Jurvetson/Flickr

The only trick will be keeping him from running off after cute bird wedding crashers.

5. Put your pet's picture on the seating card table

Image: Susana Lin/Flickr

It's a great way to keep it involved without having it accidentally pee on the train of a dress.

6. Make a fun mock wedding video with them for the rehearsal dinner

Image: Giphy

Just be warned, they'll probably show you up by doing a better job than you do on the actual day.

7. Let them share your first dance

Image: Giphy

My cousin and her new husband held their giant bulldog between them as they danced, and it made for the cutest pictures, if not slightly slobbery.

8. Bring them out just for pictures

Image: Catalin Budusan/Flickr

If you're nervous about having them in the actual ceremony, this is a great alternative that still allows you to share the moment with them.

9. Put them on your wedding cake

Just a little gesture that says, "We ruff you guys."

10. Give them the best seat in the house

If you have a bird that won't suddenly fly away, it would create a lovely picture to have it up there on a perch while you say your vows. Just make sure you aren't standing directly beneath said bird. Bird poop on the head may be good luck in Italy, but it would definitely put a damper on your wedding day.

Help! My child is into drugs!

$

It might be a sudden lack of interest in sport, a decline in grades, a rapid drop in weight or a bong sticking out of your kid's backpack that sets alarm bells off. Understandably, you may feel out of control, confused and — possibly — a little angry. How you react is important. According to psychotherapist and addictions counsellor June Lake, your response is critical. Here is what you should, and shouldn't, do.

1. Speak with your child

Communication is everything. Ideally, you already have a loving and trusting relationship with your child, which means that you should be able to openly discuss your fears and concerns with them. The key in broaching the subject is to keep calm and come from a place of love.

"If you fly into a rage and throw out the evidence, what you're doing is blaming and shaming your child and they might retreat totally from you," June explains, "so it is so important to remain calm, remain focused and speak to your child in a very loving manner."

In the event that your child turns confrontational or even aggressive, stay calm and do not engage them.

"Explain that you do not feel safe or comfortable with the way they are acting. You need to let them know that you'll draw a line but no drama."

2. Don't play investigator

You're not Sherlock Holmes, so leave the detective work to someone else and don't invade your child's space, no matter how sure you are that they have drug paraphernalia under every cushion and in every drawer.

"Please do not go snooping unless it's a matter of life and death," says June. "This is an invasion of boundaries and will break any trust that might have been established."

Moreover, discovering drugs in this manner won't actually do anything to make your child stop. On the contrary, it's likely to make them sneakier and more secretive.

3. Teach consequences

It is important for children to understand that actions have consequences and to broaden their minds to what those might be. However, your approach should draw a distinction between consequences and punishment.

"What we're trying to teach our children is consequences for their actions versus punishment for their actions, and in order to speak to them about consequences, you need to stay in relationship with them," says June.

So while dealing out some punishment — such as grounding younger children — is perfectly fine, be aware that it will be the trust and relationship that you have with your child that will ultimately enable you to get through to them.

4. Don't change schools or friends

Uprooting your child from their friendship network will not make them quit drugs. It's simple: Geography is not a barrier for a determined child.

"Today there are drugs available around all schools and kids know where and how to purchase them," June says, adding that by transferring kids to another school, you're just dragging them away from an environment where they have established relationships.

Likewise, you cannot prevent your child from spending time with undesirable friends — your child will still call, text, email or use social media to stay in touch. A better approach, though one June admits is a point of debate, is to acquaint yourself with your child's group of friends.

"This cuts down on dualities and you're able to shine more light on the behaviour of their friends, which will give you far more information about the circle they're mixing in," she says. "Young teenagers' peers are very, very, very important so it's far better to include friends than shun them."

5. Speak to other parents

Chances are that if you're worried about drugs, so are the parents of the other kids. This offers a tremendous and multifaceted opportunity. By reaching out to the parents of your child's friends, you can potentially discuss concerns, find a support network, share ideas and come up with a group strategy to overcome the problem.

"Invite the parents onto neutral territory somewhere for a meeting of concern about the children, their drug use or drugs at school," June advises, "and then develop some strategies as a group."

6. Don't treat it as a phase

"This line of thinking is dangerous," says June, "very dangerous."

She explains that while kids — and teenagers, in particular — are drawn to experimentation and thrill-seeking, you can never be certain which way it's going to go.

"You have to look at the development of drug use," she says. "Experimentation happens across many areas. It will eventually either lead to heavy social use, which leads to abuse, which leads to addiction and dependency, or the kids will step back from the experimentation and get on with their lives. However, if you have a trusting, open, transparent relationship with your children, you'll be talking to them about these things."

In short, any and all drug use should be treated as a problem and something to be addressed.

7. Seek education and professional help

Drug abuse and addiction is a disease and should be treated as such. If you were concerned that your child had a physical ailment — such as diabetes or cancer, for example — you would research and seek medical help. This should be no different.

"There is so much information available today that there's no excuse for parents not to be knowledgeable about drugs. There are also local community health centres that sometimes run classes educating parents on drug use," says June. "[Parents] really and truly need to treat it as if it were cancer because it is a disease that is fatal if it's not checked."

She advises parents to use web material, family, drug and alcohol counsellors, youth centres, NGOs and narcotics and alcoholics anonymous groups.

"You have to accept a certain level of powerlessness [with drugs]. So if you think that your child has crossed that line, seek out professional help," she says.

8. Don't dispose of drugs or paraphernalia in secret

Throwing away a bong or flushing crystal meth while your child is not present will not stop them, but it will, in all likelihood, cause conflict. Instead be direct and transparent.

"You can ask the child to bring the paraphernalia to you because you're going to destroy it or you can ask them to destroy it," says June. "If they refuse, then you have a decision to make."

Think carefully about your approach. While you're likely to have a sphere of influence over your child, the underlying message that you want to send is that they can talk to you about anything.

9. Encourage alternative activities

While it isn't always a successful strategy, trying to direct your child's attention towards a more productive pastime, such as a sporting activity or a theatre group, is always worth a try.

"Foster whatever that young person shows interest in," says June, "and look for ways to strengthen family relationships by doing things like camping."

Strong family ties, she adds, foster confidence and self-esteem in children and position parents as powerful role models.

10. Don't be afraid to involve law enforcement

Although this is a drastic last resort, sadly sometimes it is necessary.

"If you think your kid's got problems and you've got evidence, you may need to resort to consultation with law enforcement officers," June says, "particularly if you know who the dealer is."

As always, discuss this with your child first and keep calm, logical and transparent. But if you're concerned for their safety, don't be afraid to act.

BET Awards: Tamar Braxton, K. Michelle end feud thanks to women empowerment

More: 2015 BET Awards live winners list

According to Global Grind, R&B artists Tamar Braxton and K. Michelle, who have been famously feuding for years, are going to make up on stage during tonight's awards.

The site says the two have actually never met, but they've been "throwing shade at each other" on social media since 2013. Tonight, however, in the name of women's empowerment, they've agreed to put that all behind them and collaborate on a special performance during the Awards.

Tamar explained to Entertainment Tonight how and why she and K. Michelle decided to make amends.

"There's a very special performance coming up," she said. "With the whole women's empowerment and everyone coming together, and everyone coming from a a place of where we all can understand each other, I'm doing a very special performance with myself and K. Michelle. In the past, we've both had a lot of disagreements about life in general."

She continued, "This actually the first time we'll be meeting each other. I'm just really excited because I'm really about girls sticking up for each other and being there for each other. And it's time for the nonsense to stop. Let's just empower each other and be great."

Amen, girl.

Last year, K. Michelle admitted in an interview that she was ready to put their past issues behind her.

"I don't want to fight with her," she said. "I bought her album. I even reached out. She, for some reason, wants to fight with me. I really just want us to sing. We come from reality. It's already hard enough for us as it is. We did it. We both did great things this year to come from reality. We overcame a lot of things this year. So I feel I don't mind. We can have a sing-off. Like, that's fun. Let's get on stage and have a good time."
