Why you need to convince the stubborn men in your life to see a doctor

$
0
0

To celebrate National Men's Health Month, I'm recruiting all the women out there to help get their boyfriends, husbands, dads, brothers and buddies into the doctor's office! Here are the top things most men miss out on when they skip the doctor and don't realize the significant health impact.

1. Skin cancer detection

Men are twice as likely to develop and die from skin cancer compared to women. Very few men wear SPF daily, while women tend to have sunscreen in their makeup and skin care products. Additionally, men spend more time outdoors than women do and of course, they avoid going to the doctor so chances of early detection are significantly reduced.

2. Blood pressure screening

Beginning at age 18, men should establish a relationship with a primary care physician. This can be an internist or a family physician. Getting blood pressure checks every two to three years helps catch borderline values early and gives us time to work together to modify any poor lifestyle habits and avoid medications. As men get into their mid and late 30s the likelihood of having high blood pressure increases. If he also has a family history of high blood pressure his risks continue to increase. Getting in to see a physician for screening is the best way to prevent heart disease and hypertension.

3. Prostate cancer screening

Among the medical community, prostate cancer screening is a controversial topic. Research shows that current screening tests may not always be specific for detecting cancers. What we do know is that certain risk factors including age, African-American race or a family history of prostate cancer increase a man's chance of developing the disease. Assessing his risk and beginning the discussion with his physician is the best way to assess a man’s risk and what type of testing he may need.

4. Waistline

Your guy may regularly hop on the scale to keep his gut in check, but you should be encouraging him to measure his waist as well. A waistline of 40 inches or greater is a significant risk factor for developing heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. Some studies believe that this value may be even more important to consider than a man's weight.

Encouraging men to see a physician regularly is the best way to keep them healthy and happy!

Lady Gaga's Disney princess shirt is disgusting on so many levels (PHOTO)

Lady Gaga's latest outfit has our jaws dropping. In the worst way possible.

I'm all for celebrities making statements with their outfits. Normally, I live by the mantra that it's your body so you should do whatever you want with it.

But don't mess with my childhood.

And not only did Lady Gaga ruin part of my fairy tale soul, she did it in public, where kids — and the rest of the world — could see.

The shirt shows Snow White scantily clad with her breasts and vagina bared for all to see, while the dwarfs fondle her in an orgy scene that is so perverse, it's important you are forewarned.

NSFW!

But... here it is.

Lady Gaga disgusting snow white shirt 3

Lady Gaga disgusting snow white shirt 3

I can't believe she even had the gall to purchase a shirt like this, let alone wear it out and about like it's a casual tee. What would inspire her to think this was a good idea? The only answer I can come up with is that she was in need of some good publicity, which is really the most pathetic excuse. But I guess it worked. It just cost her some serious respect and integrity.

Especially at a time when a lot of fans were thinking she had taken a turn for the genuine, this seems like a huge, disappointing step back for the pop star.

Now, I get that Disney princesses have lost a lot of their charm over the past decade. We've started to realize that all the stereotypes and unrealistic expectations the movies present really aren't all that healthy when they're embedded into your mind at such a young age. And I completely support productive discussions on how we can move forward and better the content we're giving to children.

But this is none of that.

This is horrifyingly offensive.

Excuse me while I go rinse out my eyes and try to forget the image that is brutally burned into my brain.

Restaurant offers $10,000 of food to whoever names their baby Quinoa

$

BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse is promoting the arrival of two new menu items with a rather unusual challenge. To celebrate two new dishes — a roasted chicken with spinach-quinoa bowl and roasted salmon quinoa bowl — BJ's is asking consumers to consider naming their baby Quinoa. Really.

“We are so excited to introduce these amazing new quinoa bowls that we wanted to do something big, maybe even a little crazy," said Kevin Mayer, executive vice president and chief marketing officer at BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse.

BJ's is betting on the trend of naming newborns after food items like Apple, Kale and Brie, and hoping that somewhere out there is a parent who is willing to allow their child to go through life with Quinoa as a name.

“At the end of the day, we think Quinoa could be a great baby name,"said Mayer. “And who knows? Maybe it will start a trend.”

No, Kevin Mayer. Just no. Now listen, I'm sure your quinoa bowls are delightfully tasty. And that's super generous that you'd be willing to offer up $10,000 worth of food to the winner. But there is no need to go on record as starting a trend of naming your child after a grain (and not that tasty of a grain at that, let's be honest). We don't need to see any little Sorghums or Groats or Lentils running around the playground anytime soon. There's only one acceptable person we could reach out to about naming your child Quinoa, and that comes from Tiffany Beveridge, who runs the Pinterest page 'My Imaginary Well-Dressed Toddler' and has a book available now. Tiffany had this to say:

I fully endorse the naming of children Quinoa. Not only is it a beautiful name that rolls off the tongue and a superfood that gets stuck in the teeth, but also a giant hipster flag that you can wave in the face of your peers.

While I'm sure this will raise some great promotion for BJ's quinoa bowls, I really hope people don't fall prey to this contest and saddle a little one with a name like Quinoa anytime soon. I mean, I guess if worse comes to worst, little Quinoa could have a nickname or go by his or her middle name. But is it really worth it?

In the meantime, those without impending babies — or anyone else who recognizes the complete ridiculousness of this publicity stunt but still likes cheap food — can change his or her first name to Quinoa on Twitter until July 6 and receive a $10 off of a $35 purchase coupon to BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse.

Tyra Banks reveals ridiculous expectations put on models today (PHOTO)

The supermodel shared a pic of herself in her younger days, backstage at a major fashion show, and included a long commentary on how different the industry is for models today.

More: Tyra Banks' #rawandreal selfie brings out the ugliness in fans (PHOTO)

We totally get her point. Young girls in the modeling industry are pitted against each other and only the thinnest survive. The skinnier the better, and if you don't look perfect 100 percent of the time, you won't get work. When Tyra reigned the runways, women were much curvier and were able to express more personality both on and off-duty.

But something about her phrasing is bothersome. While there is definitely a seedy underbelly to the modeling world, expounding on these types of problems seems disingenuous when she herself is still a major player in the industry and has the power to do something about it above and beyond America's Next Top Model.

Tell us: Should Tyra Banks use more of her power to change the modeling industry's scary-perfect standards?

If you’re looking for a way to show your favorite runner that you care and support their healthy choices, here are just a couple of great gift ideas to help you make sure their running season continues to go off in the right direction.

1. The Fitbit

Fitbit

This is currently one of the most popular fitness gadgets out there for any athlete. It is kind of like the Jetsons' version of a pedometer.

There are several Fitbit models that range in price from $60 to $250, but of course, the more you have to spend the more features you will get.

The Fitbit Zip is the most basic and least expensive model. The Zip tracks steps, distance and calories burned and is worn by being clipped to a belt, pocket, bra or sock.

The Fitbit Charge is similar to the Fitbit Flex, but also has a digital display that comes with caller ID when linked to your smartphone. Additionally, it has a heart rate monitor.

16-Year-olds tie the knot before terminal cancer takes groom's life

$

How young is too young to get married? While most parents would probably lock up their children before allowing them to enter holy matrimony, this high school couple received nothing but support.

Amie Cresswell and Omar Al Shaikh might look like your average 16-year-olds, but they faced a tragic set of circumstances that forced them to move up future plans. The Metro reports Omar was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia last year. A type of blood cancer, this form of leukemia can quickly spread throughout the body, making it fatal without treatment.

Omar was in remission when the two began dating. Over time, the cancer returned. "I'm absolutely heartbroken," said Amie. "When he was told it had come back it was just a massive shock. I knew I wanted to stand by him through it all."

Hopeful to find a donor, doctors searched for a match but experienced difficulty due to Omar's mixed heritage. By the time one was available, he was too ill to undergo the procedure. With less than a week to live, Omar asked Amie's mother for permission to marry her daughter.

The pair exchanged vows during a bedside ceremony in front of family and friends. "As he put the ring on my finger, he said he wished he had more time with me," recalls Amie. "I wish we had too, but I'm so glad we had the chance to make this happy memory."

Omar passed away three days later, holding his wife's hand.

This story reminds me of the Nicholas Sparks novel A Walk to Remember. Perhaps you saw the movie that starred Mandy Moore and Shane West as a high school couple who deal with love and tragedy (Moore's character died of leukemia).

I can only imagine what it must feel like to be the parent of a terminally ill child. There's nothing you wouldn't give to protect them, and yet you feel utterly helpless to remove their pain and suffering. It's hard to say what I would do or how I would feel if one of my sons was in this situation. Marriage should certainly not be entered into lightly, but could I say no to a last request?

What would you do if your family was in this situation?

More: Glee's Darren Criss infuriates fans with transphobic Caitlyn Jenner 'joke'

Except this time, it wasn't her own actions that earned the spotlight. The I Am Cait star got a historic mention by President Barack Obama during his taping of Logo's Trailblazer Honors.

In a video message to air during the event, Obama spoke at length about how far LGBTQ issues have come in the U.S. in the last decade.

"Tonight is a chance to celebrate, not just ten years of Logo, but ten years of extraordinary progress for our country," he says. "When this network aired its first show, gay marriage was a political wedge issue used to divide us. Today the majority of Americans live in states where they can get married, no matter who they love. Today ‘Don't Ask Don't Tell' is history. We passed the hate crime law that bears Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr.'s name. And all you have to do is look at this month's cover of Vanity Fair to see how America is more accepting of people for who they truly are."

After giving Jenner the shout-out in reference to her cover shoot for the magazine, Obama continues, "We still have plenty of work to do together, but tonight is a reminder that when everybody does their part, when every voice is heard, change is not just possible—change is inevitable. So here's to ten extraordinary years, and all the years to come. Let's keep standing together to make sure every American is treated with dignity and respect they deserve."

Obama isn't the only celebrity who will appear on the special. E! News reports that the show will open with a video message from Miley Cyrus, and many other celebs will make appearances, including Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sir Ian McKellen, Jack Antonoff and Bleacers, Adam Lambert, Tyler Posey and Orange is the New Black actress Samira Riley. Martin Luther King III and Raven-Symone will present a tribute to legendary gay rights activist Bayard Rustin.

Trailblazer Honors will air on Logo this Saturday at 8 p.m. ET.

The Walking Dead: 7 Clues about the new season (VIDEO)

$

The Walking Dead is lurching back to TV for Season 6 in October, but thanks to a set tour video from Michael Cudlitz (Abraham), a few secrets have already been revealed. Most of the video is devoted to watching the cast goof around. Trust me, it's a nice change of pace from the usual dour mood of the show. The best moment is definitely when Norman Reedus locks lips with an unsuspecting Danai Gurira and makes all of our Daryl/Michonne fan fiction dreams come true. There are also a few legitimate teases for Season 6 tucked in amongst all the hijinks though, as long as you look closely.

TWD Season 6 Set Video

TWD Season 6 Set Video

1. Rick's group is on the road again

Will the first episode start with a flashback, or is Rick's group on the move again? The group is supposed to be setting up base in Alexandria, but they appear to still be roughing it when the season begins. Maybe they're moving through the woods on a supply mission. They are surrounded by quite a few huge trucks that could be holding resources.

2. Morgan's skills with his staff will come into play

Cudlitz asks Lennie James (Morgan) if he knows the backstory to Morgan's cool staff, and James hints that he thinks he knows the origins. Please let that mean there is a Morgan-centric episode on the horizon.

More: Could Morgan's return actually be bad news for Rick?

3. Michonne is definitely coming back

There were rumors swirling that Gurira had not been seen shooting with the rest of the cast, but she is seen here laughing it up with the rest of the gang. That doesn't mean she's safe. It is comforting to know Michonne is not missing just yet though.

4. There's more info on The Wolves coming

Sonequa Martin-Green is as curious about the lawless, kidnapping Wolves as everyone else is. While she remains tight-lipped about what is ahead, she does suggest there's more to come with these baddies. I don't know if that's a good thing or not.

5. The group is stocking up on tools

Is there already trouble brewing in Alexandria? Nearly the entire main cast is seen trekking out of the forest with shovels and other tools. It looks like they could be prepping for walkers… or maybe they're just starting a garden.

More: Take a look back at Carol's most unforgivable moments (so far)

6. The first episode is going to blow your mind

Hey, Cudlitz's words, not mine. Since the video was filmed during the first day of shooting, it's safe to say the cast will be involved in something big. They are all together and out in the open, instead of at the Alexandria base. That has to mean walkers or Wolves. Either way, there will probably be blood.

Selena Gomez dishes on her close relationship with a surprising A-lister

More: The reason Selena Gomez keeps everyone at arm's length is sad

Except this time, it's not Taylor Swift or Demi Lovato. It's someone even better: Jennifer Aniston.

We already knew the two were friends, because it's definitely come up in the past on Instagram, where Gomez has never been shy about giving shout-outs to the former Friends star. But in a recent interview with KTU's Cubby and Carolina, she got into some more intimate details, and let's just say we're a little jealous of this celeb BFF-ship.

Honestly, she’s amazing,” Gomez shared. "We met through my management. They manage her as well, so it was kind of like a friendly meeting and instantly she's, like, inviting me to her house.”

And here's the part that has us really jealous. What do they do when they hang out? Only one of the best possible pastimes.

“She has a pizza oven,” Gomez added. “Like, we've made pizzas at her house."

More: We applaud Selena Gomez embracing her curves in unedited Instagram photo

More than that, it sounds like Aniston is just a good role model to have around. She's been a star for almost as long as Gomez has been alive, so we can only image the kind of advice and guidance the 46-year-old actress has to offer the 22-year-old "Good For You" singer.

And it sounds like she's not shy about that advice, either.

"She's very cool and very sweet. She kind of gives me a lot of, like, maternal advice," Gomez said.

Just try to tell us you wouldn't want that kind of relationship with Rachel Green.

15 Disney World foodie finds you probably don't know about but should

OK, it's true. Many of the stories you've heard mixing food and Disney World tend to end with small children having upset stomachs and some nasty results. That's kind of unfortunate, because Disney World is a magical place that caters to the young, the young at heart and all peoples in between. That includes those who love to go on vacation and eat.

There are literally hundreds of places to get a bite in Disney World, so there are probably dozens you've never heard of. That's OK, we'll be your guide to the Disney eats you're missing but shouldn't be.

1. Flatbread with spreads at Sanaa

sanaa flatbread disney

sanaa flatbread disney

Sanaa is Walt Disney World's African-themed restaurant, featured prominent at the African villages resort. With windows that look out onto a large nature reserve, diners are treated to a number of African dishes, including curries, salads, drinks and the best flatbread you'll ever eat. Basically a 2-foot-long piece of naan, Sanaa's flatbreads come in different flavors, like plain, coconut or spicy, and can come with three or nine different spreads, like tamarind, spicy chili sauce and coconut. You can order the flatbread as an appetizer, but it's more than enough to make a meal. For three people.

2. Savanna S'mores at Sanaa

sanaa smores

If you're not overloaded on carbs from the flatbreads, Sanaa has the best dessert in all of Walt Disney World: the Savanna S'mores. These s'mores, which are really just pudding, graham crackers and whipped cream, bring the flavor of a wild campfire and are so much more than the sum of their parts.

3. Guarana soda at Club Cool

epcot soda

epcot soda

Epcot is a tale of two different parks. The first part, with its trademark geodesic dome, focuses on technology and science. The second part is an homage to the peoples of the world. In the science and technology area, you'll find Club Cool, a Coca Cola-sponsored soda bar that offers free samples of drinks from all around the world. Try them all, but come back for as many shots of guarana (a fruity Brazilian drink) as you can fit into your little sample cup.

4. Fish and chips at Rose & Crown

epcot fish and chips

epcot fish and chips

Once you get out of the science and technology area, take a right turn, and you'll soon find yourself in Merry Olde England, or at least a reasonable facsimile of it. Feel free to stop in and get some authentic English tea, and then grab some fish and chips. They're greasy, salty, and they smell like the best food you'll ever have in your life.

5. Sushi at Tokyo Dining

epcot sushi

By the time you've finished your fish and chips, you will have walked through several more areas of the (Epcot) world, and you should be entering Japan. There, you can devour mochi balls and a two-bite sushi combo that's covered in sweet eel sauce that makes all the walking you've done more than worth it.

6. German sausages at Biergarten

epcot sausages

Did we mention the world is a big place? Did we also mention that Epcot is a big place too? It's OK, though, because the good folks at Epcot will make sure you can keep your strength up by offering an array of German sausages in their German area. Tossed on a bun and slathered in mustard, these sausages are the next best thing to traveling to Munich and feasting on meat in your lederhosen.

7. The Yak Attack at Yak & Yeti

yak attack

Disney's Animal Kingdom park is awe-inspiring with its homage to The Lion King's home, zoo and the yeti ride. Of course, after all of that exploring, you're sure to work up an appetite. That's why we recommend the Yak & Yeti. The food is simple Chinese fare, but the smells alone are worth it. Plus, you can sip on a Yak Attack, a delicious mango daiquiri with wild berry flavors.

8. All the pork at Whispering Canyon

pork whispering canyon

pork whispering canyon

Whispering Canyon is the place where food goes to have fun. It's a barbecue restaurant in the Fort Wilderness Lodge that features all-you-can-eat barbecue, stick "horse races" and lots of ketchup, if only you ask… Anyway, there's some good 'cue at Whispering Canyon, but really, it's the "eat pork products until the waitress's legs fall off" platter that really sells the meal.

9. Cobb salad at The Hollywood Brown Derby

brown derby cobb

brown derby cobb

The Hollywood Brown Derby is an exact replica of the famous Brown Derby in Los Angeles. Taken straight from a movie scene, it's got old-school charm, white tile floors and famous people's pictures on the wall. It's also got the best darn Cobb salad you're likely to ever have. One might say it's legendary.

10. Lump crab Florida rock shrimp cakes at The Wave… of American Flavors

crab shrimp cakes disney

crab shrimp cakes disney

Nestled at the bottom (the very, very bottom) of Disney's Contemporary Resort is a half sci-fi/half underwater restaurant known as the The Wave… of American Flavors. The restaurant, though given an unwieldy name, features fantastic eats, including the lump crab Florida rock shrimp cakes, which is also an unwieldy name. Still, no matter how you order them, you will love them, since they're the type of seafood cake that's all seafood and very little anything else.

11. The cheese course at The Wave… of American Flavors

After you're done enjoying the rock shrimp cakes, stay for the cheese course dessert. Sure, The Wave… of American Flavors has the traditional sweet dessert, but the array of cheeses, spreads, dried fruits and nuts is a great way to end your meal before heading back out into the Florida sun.

12. Reubens at Earl of Sandwich

the earl of sandwich

Called the best Reuben ever by one enthusiastic diner, the Reuben at the Earl of Sandwich has to be tried when you go to Downtown Disney. It's got the perfect mixture of rye bread, meat, kraut and Thousand Island dressing so that each bite is perfectly balanced. Even better, the Earl of Sandwich has fast service, which is important, because Downtown Disney gets crowded when the sun goes down.

13. Beijing-style candied strawberries from China Pavilion

Make your way to the China Pavilion at Epcot, and reward yourself on your walk with this cold, refreshing treat. This skewer of Beijing-style candied strawberries has a perfectly crunchy sugar shell and a smattering of sesame seeds. You'll never feel the same way about chocolate-covered strawberries again.

14. Sandwiches from Sunshine Seasons

sandwich sunshine seasons

Quick counter service can be found just about anywhere in Disney parks and resorts. However, we have to give a shout-out to the sandwich service at Sunshine Seasons at Epcot. Found indoors near the environmentally focused rides in Epcot, Sunshine Seasons' sandwiches were nearly over a square foot and 4 inches tall. With chips and a cookie, they were more than enough to feed two hungry Epcot tourists.

15. Really, anywhere with the deluxe dining plan

disney magic band

disney magic band

There are lots of great places to eat at Disney, but really, anywhere is great if you have the deluxe dining plan. If you do, every meal (which includes an appetizer, a meal, a nonalcoholic drink and a dessert) and every snack can be had for the scan of a MagicBand. It turns every meal into a gourmet experience and lets you try things like flatbreads and Savanna S'mores that you might otherwise pass up.

But be careful, because the Disney folks will try to run everything as a snack if they can, so be on the lookout. If you let them run your meals as snacks, you will end up paying for snacks and having unspent meal points on your plan. All you have to do is tell them you want to run your meal as a meal instead of a snack, and the cashier will be happy to do so (though they often tell you to go back and get more food), and you will end up with all the right points when you need them.

Safe and natural ways to suppress your appetite

$

1. Drink (lots of) water

The cheapest and healthiest appetite suppressant is lots of fresh water. Drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day is necessary for a variety of health reasons: staying hydrated, clearer skin, elimination of body toxins... but doing so also helps curb your appetite. Drinking an 8-ounce glass of water when you start to feel hunger pangs, or before sitting down to a meal during which you might be tempted to overeat, can help you get a temporary handle on a growling stomach.

If drinking 64 ounces of plain water every day sounds like a monotonous hell, there are a number of ways to remedy this. Try adding freshly shredded mint leaves, slices of citrus or slices of cucumber to your water to impart a little flavor. Unsweetened, uncolored seltzers also count as water intake, though carbonated water should account for no more than one or two glasses per day.

2. Leafy greens, apples and pickles

Eating something to curb your appetite might seem counterintuitive. If the food in question is a high-fiber, no-fat, low-calorie food that gives you a "full" feeling for hours, however, then go for it!

Leafy greens like cabbage, bok choy, kale, spinach or arugula contain enough fiber to convince your stomach that it's done eating for a while, even though they barely register on the calorie radar. To give them a little more pizzazz, add a low-calorie vinegar for dressing.

Pickles that are sugar free are also low calorie and filling; fashion models eat them frequently as a snack. Apples are also low calorie and filling because of their high fiber content. Opt for organic apples, whenever possible.

3. Start the day with protein

Your parents were right: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, particularly if you're trying to control your weight. A recent study carried out by the University of Missouri's Department of Exercise Physiology determined that women who ate a breakfast high in protein felt fuller and ate less not only in the hours leading up to lunch, but during lunch as well. There's nothing wrong with the occasional bowl of natural cereal or plate of French toast, but scrambled eggs and/or Greek yogurt sprinkled with walnuts will pack more of a protein punch, keeping you satisfied through the better part of your day.

4. Limit variety per meal

This trick sounds odd, or at the very least dull, but essentially this method involves limiting the different types of flavors during a meal. Why would this work as an appetite suppressant?

According to David Katz, physician and head of the Yale Prevention Research Center, the areas of the mind involved with appetite become overwhelmed when there are a number of different, competing flavors in one meal. This leads you to indulge more than you normally might, because the brain has a harder time keeping track of which flavors have been satisfied fully.

Katz has devised what he calls a "flavor point diet," in which each meal has one specific flavor. Unhealthy, processed foods are also completely eliminated from the flavor point diet, not only because of their lack of nutritive value, but because they confuse the mind's appetite centers with their simultaneous, extreme flavors.

Beetroot juice is a superfood that doesn’t get talked about enough

$
0
0

1. It's a natural multivitamin

The vitamin and mineral content of beetroot juice is impressive. In terms of vitamin content, it contains high levels of vitamin C, folic acid, beta carotene (vitamin A) and vitamins B1, B2 and B3. Mineral wise, beetroot juice boasts a long list of valuable nutrients: potassium, phosphorus, manganese, zinc, copper, selenium and iron. Additionally, beetroot juice contains protein in the form of a complete set of amino acids. Not too shabby!

2. It's a stamina booster

A recent British medical study at the University of Exeter shed some light on the properties of beetroot juice that can increase stamina. Specifically, the study showed that athletes were able to exercise 16 percent longer than normal, because the nitrates in beetroot juice reduced oxygen uptake. This reduced uptake, in turn, had the effect of making workouts less fatiguing.

Professor Andy Jones, who organized the study, was quoted as saying: "Our study is the first to show that nitrate-rich food can increase exercise endurance."

3. It lowers blood pressure

As it turns out, the nitrates in beetroot juice may not only increase stamina, but lower blood pressure as well. The evidence is courtesy of yet another British study, this time courtesy of The London School of Medicine. Professor Amrita Ahluwalia's study determined that the nitrate levels in 500 milliliters of beetroot juice a day had a measurable effect on blood pressure reduction. The findings further showed that not only did the nitrates in the beetroot juice reduce blood pressure a mere few hours after ingestion, but that the positive effects still registered a full day after ingestion.

How nitrates reduce blood pressure is still under scrutiny, but the researchers believe that nitrite may act as a blood vessel expander, thus improving circulation.

4. It's good for the cardiovascular system

The widening of blood vessels caused by nitrate ingestion not only improves circulation, but also decreases the risk of heart disease, artery hardening and vascular disease. In short, by expanding the blood vessels, the nitrates in beetroot juice supply more blood to the heart, and along with it, more oxygen. Improved blood and oxygen flow through the heart keeps it healthy, and also reduces the chest pain that accompanies heart disease and hardened arteries. For years, doctors have recommended a different form of nitrate to patients with chest pain and heart disease: nitroglycerine. While the body makes nitroglycerine already, the production of it slows and eventually stops with age, leading to the heart and artery diseases associated with aging. Two cups of beetroot juice daily are recommended for increasing nitrate levels to a degree that's beneficial for the cardiovascular system.

Best ways to get beetroot juice:

Aside from growing your own beets, the cheapest way to get fresh, organic beetroot juice is to juice them yourself. Organic beets can be picked up at your local farmers market (when in season), or in the organic produce section of a supermarket. Pre-packaged beetroot juice is available, but it's pricey: As of this writing, costs average around $6 or $7 per bottle. A case of six 16-ounce bottles tends to sell for about $40, so buying in bulk doesn't seem to offer any cost savings. If you decide to go the store-bought route, well-known companies like Lakewood, Biotta and Eden Organic sell beetroot juice.

Lena Dunham celebrates marriage equality with a big request

The Girls star revealed that she and her boyfriend Jack Antonoff made a very Brangelina-esque decision (which Brad and Angie didn't even hold out for, by the way) to remain unwed until everyone had the right to marry.

"Well, it's something that… the idea of having a celebration that can't be fully shared among all the people in my life and all the people that we love just doesn't really feel like a celebration at all," Dunham shared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in March.

"So, until that's something that everyone can join into with no sense of being left out on any level, politically, emotionally, it's just not something that we're gonna do," she said.

But guess what? In case you hadn't heard, the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage on a national level today — and now Dunham is ready for Antonoff to put a ring on it.

I hate adult-only weddings

$

Let me tell you a little story.

There was once a woman who hated children. She hated children so much, in fact, that she vowed not a single child should wipe his snotty nose or step one dirt-crusted foot into the venue on the day of her wedding nuptials. While a lot of couples don't invite children to weddings, for obvious reasons, or leave them out of the reception invites to save on costs, this woman took things one step further.

She banned children from her wedding and even got into a pretty dramatic fight with one of her bridesmaids, who had just had a baby and was still breastfeeding. She didn't even want her bridesmaid to have her baby anywhere near her special day at all. This particular bridezilla demanded that her poor friend find a stranger to watch her baby at her out-of-town wedding, even though her husband was perfectly willing and able to care for the baby during the day and the festivities so the baby could be around when she needed to feed him.

"I just don't get it," the bride complained to me one day at work. "Why is she acting like I'm doing something wrong? Leave the brat at home and have a day off! I just don't want the thing crying and ruining everything."

Cruel, right? But maybe a teensy bit excused because sometimes people without kids really don't have a clue? Also, to be fair, I'm paraphrasing and she may or may not have used the word "brat."

As the wedding inched closer, the bride didn't let up in her desire to have precisely zero children at the wedding. She reiterated, over and over, how kids were a pain and they would mess something up on her big day and, for the most part, I didn't argue with her, because what's the point? I knew there was no way I would be attending the reception since I couldn't afford a sitter, so I happily marked my regrets and went along my merry way.

When the day of the wedding arrived, me being a mere spectator and, of course, having a baby of my own, arriving late to the party, I snuck in the back of the church. Lo and behold, who did I see in the back, but the bridesmaid's baby, all dressed up in a dapper little suit and hanging out happily in his dad's arms. I gasped inwardly, a bit horrified at what my friend's reaction might be, while also applauding the bridesmaid's decision to stand up to the absurdness of the bride's demands. And really, what other choice did the poor girl have? I wouldn't have left my baby with a stranger either and dragged around a breast pump all day, wasting my liquid gold in the process.

The wedding went on, with me sneaking furtive glances at the baby the whole time during the ceremony. Would he cry? I worried. Scream for his mother? Throw a fit right when they exchanged vows? I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, sweating bullets for the baby's dad, who must have been worried too. Although he didn't look it and maybe I just looked insane.

As the bride and groom turned to each other and began repeating their vows, I breathed a little sigh of relief when the baby continued sleeping right through it. Phew, I thought. This is going to be OK.

And then, it happened.

At the exact moment — and I do mean the exact moment — that the bride opened her mouth to swear her undying love to her groom on her picture-perfect, kid-free, special day, someone's cell phone rang. And it rang loud.

And rang. And rang. And rang. I don't know if it was an old person who genuinely didn't hear it or someone was too embarrassed to admit they left their phone on, but no one stopped it and the shrill audio bounced off of the walls and seemed to fill up that whole church. O.M.G.

The bride and groom laughed it off and those of us in the pews let out some nervous titters, but all I could marvel at was the intense, crazy irony of that situation. For a person who had worked so hard to pull off a wedding free from any child interruption and alienated friends and family in the process, that karma had to suck, man.

Moral of the story?

Don't stress about kids being at your wedding. If you can't afford them, fine, but be cool when parents can't come because they can't afford a sitter or have to duck out at 9 p.m. for bedtime.

Also?

Make sure people shut their phones off at your ceremony. Just a suggestion.

Disneyland just banned selfie sticks

$
0
0

Disneyland just announced it has banned selfie sticks — the irritating narcissist's favorite smartphone accessory — effective July 1 at all Disney theme parks worldwide.

"We strive to provide a great experience for the entire family and unfortunately selfie sticks have become a growing safety concern for both our guests and cast," Disney spokesperson Kim Prunty said.

The selfie sticks have been causing chaos on rides throughout the parks. Big Thunder Mountain had to be shut down for more than an hour just this week thanks to riders pulling out their selfie sticks on the roller coaster despite signs and warnings against it.

Now Disneyland is ratcheting up its offensive against selfie sticks with a full ban. Any selfie sticks being brought into the park will be confiscated during the mandatory bag check. Visitors will have the option of checking their selfie sticks with park officials while they’re in the park or taking them back to their cars or hotel rooms.

They aren't messing around.

Disneyland wants people to be safe. I’m worried about people so vapid that instead of just enjoying the day at Disneyland, they spend the entire time trying to document the experience to make their friends on social media jealous.

Have we really lost the ability to just be in the moment? Why are so many people compelled to take themselves away from a fun — and expensive — day at a Disneyland park to fuss over taking the right selfie?

No matter — they're banned now. Selfie addicts will have to go back to obsessing over which Instagram filter makes them look the most tanned.
