Soon-to-be divorcee celebrates end of her marriage with a champagne party

Charlie, 26, held a divorce party to help her get over the end of the marriage, inviting all her friends along to the bash, which was decorated with "divorce balloons". She even dressed for the occasion, in a T-shirt with "I ain't no wifey" printed across the front.

Charlie and Lee were together for nine years before getting wed, but things quickly started to deteriorate shortly after they tied the knot. After Charlie accused Lee of cheating on her, he ended the relationship, and moved in with another woman three weeks later.

But Charlie was determined not to spend her time grieving, and kept busy organising a divorce party on what would have been their first wedding anniversary.

"I wanted to celebrate being a stronger woman, instead of wallowing," Charlie told the Daily Mail. "I was devastated when Lee broke up with me but I had so much fun at my party — dancing with my friends and enjoying being single."

More: Why your divorce party might hurt your kids

The divorce party is a trend that began in the U.S. and has been growing in popularity over the last few years, with party planners taking advantage of the demand with divorce party cakes, decorations and games (such as Put the Garter Back On and Trash the Dress Paintball). A divorce party "will help you to look forward to the future, put the past where it belongs and mark the end of era in style, with a view towards all of the new and exciting possibilities ahead!" says online retailer PartyPacks.co.uk.

As an alternative to the girls-night-out, no-men-allowed divorce party, couples splitting up amicably (yes, it can be done) might want to celebrate the occasion together. This is exactly what White Stripes frontman Jack White and his model wife Karen Elson did in 2011, throwing a joint party to honour both their 6th wedding anniversary and their upcoming divorce, and to reaffirm their "friendship and celebrate the past and future with close friends and family."

According to the invitation sent out to their close family and friends, the party was to include “dancing, photos, memories and drinks with alcohol in them”. Sounds like a damn fine party, divorce or not.

However, no amount of partying can take away from the fact that divorce is often an incredibly painful experience. Is the end of a marriage really cause for celebration?

According to Charlie — absolutely. In fact, she had so much fun, she's planning to throw a second one next month when her divorce is finalised. "I’ve hired a hot tub and will be having a prosecco party with my friends and family. I feel so much stronger now and might celebrate the anniversary of my divorce every year."

Kaitlyn Bristowe and Joel Madden couldn't possibly be hooking up — right?

The Season 11 leading lady was seen giving Joel Madden a hug after a concert, and suddenly they seem to have "a lot of chemistry."

More: Chris Soules' latest gig makes us think he's just looking for fame

One source who spoke with OK! magazine said Kaitlyn has a party girl reputation in her Canada hometown, so they wouldn't be surprised if she was hooking up with a rock star.

Another source said Madden has been having marriage trouble with Nicole Richie. "They've been fighting like crazy. Nicole hates that he acts like a single man when he parties at events," the source explained. "She knows what he's like when he drinks and she doesn't trust him. She's constantly checking up on him, and that only makes him want to act out more."

More: Chris Harrison teases explosive "Brokeback Bachelor" demise

And while divorce rumors have plagued the Hollywood couple for months, we're still not putting much stock in rumors that he and Kaitlyn are anything but friends. So she got a little flirty and put her hand on him at a bar. That doesn't mean they're cheating on their respective partners.

Plus, who wouldn't want to touch the Good Charlotte rocker? If I met him I'd probably give him a big hug, too. Those middle school dances just wouldn't have been the same without "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" — let's be real.

More: Ali Fedotowsky defends Nick Viall: He's the only man I like this season

The Madden rumors seem even more unlikely, especially given the fact that just yesterday, Bristowe sent a Snapchat that seemed to mistakenly reveal who wins her heart this season on The Bachelorette. And if that rumor is true (which is more likely than the Madden story), then she doesn't need any side nookie. She's already got a man in her bed.

Bristowe, for one, doesn't seem to be worrying about all the gossip today, since she's too busy celebrating her 30th birthday.

Angry woman hates sandwich, attempts to run over employee with her car

The Sonora Police Department in California is searching for a woman (seen in the surveillance photo above) who allegedly assaulted a fast-food worker. CBS Local Sacramento reports a Subway employee called 911 after being verbally and physically assaulted by an angry customer.

She didn't like her sandwich.

The employee reveals the woman became angrier about her dissatisfaction that led her to hurl both the sandwich and a soda. Things almost turned deadly once she left the restaurant.

"The clerk followed the customer out of the business while speaking with an emergency dispatcher on the phone," notes Chief Mark Stinson. "When the customer observed the clerk in the parking lot talking on the phone, she accelerated the vehicle and swerved at the clerk, in an attempt to hit the clerk with the vehicle."

Fortunately she was unsuccessful but is still on the loose.

Police describe the woman as a white female in her 20s with medium-length blond hair. She and an unknown man left the scene in a gold, late-1990s model Honda sedan.

This has to be one of the craziest stories about an angry customer I've ever heard. It's bad enough many have to deal with irate and shady co-workers that one has to now be careful about people trying to run them over in parking lots.

I'm a pretty big fan of Subway restaurants. It was my first job and continues to hit the spot when I need a quick meal for lunch or after the gym. Sure, there have been times when my sandwich resembled a Jackson Pollock painting, but doesn't eating fast food mean you sometimes have to take the good with the bad? Unlike many fast-food establishments, Subway makes your meal in front of you. If this woman didn't like something about her order, she could've easily asked for some changes.

A bad sandwich is certainly not the end of the world — though I can recall getting flustered while pregnant because the lines were too long. Regardless, it would've been much easier if she had calmly addressed her dislikes instead of throwing both her sandwich and the drink. Sorry, honey, but you won't get a refund that way. No 6-inch or foot-long sub is ever worth the well-being of someone else. If things were really that bad, speak to the manager, or leave a poor review online.

I guess a bad meal is worth an attempted assault with a deadly weapon charge.

9 Things we learned about Channing Tatum from his Pinterest board

As if his sweet, sweet dance moves and the fact that his email to Amy Pascal about 22 Jump Street was the only good thing to come out of the Sony hack weren't enough, Tatum participated in a Reddit AMA earlier this week that introduced us to a whole new world of information about him. Of all the vital data presented about magical seashells always filled with bourbon and the power of getting lost in Matt Bomer's eyes, one little nugget of wisdom seems to stand out from the rest: Tatum is an avid Pinterester.

Of course, upon learning this, we ran right over to Pinterest to check out his boards. We typed in the URL with visions of pins about recipes for PB&J/Cheeto sandwiches and tips on how to fight the zombie apocalypse dancing in our heads. Instead, we found boards similar to what you might see on the Pinterest of a 22-year-old sociology major who recently moved out of her dorm and is looking to redecorate a little. I can make that judgement with full confidence because I, myself, was once a 22-year-old sociology major looking to redecorate a little. Channing Tatum, did we just become best friends?

More: Channing Tatum spent his weekend supporting the LGBTQ community (PHOTOS)

Tatum's unexpected Pinterest situation is totally messing with our heads. Of course it's hilarious, but is it hilarious because he assembled such non-Channing Tatum boards in jest and is trying to be funny, or is it hilarious because he's dead-ass serious and really has a penchant for dishes and other domestic items? Our minds haven't been this blown since Inception.

Though we are thoroughly confused, we're going to make the conscious choice to believe that Tatum's Pinterest is, in fact, not in jest and we'll take the boards as a serious look into the life of this ever-captivating celeb. Here's what we learned.

1. He's into sculpture

Channing Tatum Pinterest

In fact, he has an entire board titled "Sculpture," and it's filled with both existing pieces of art and photos of dancers that we are assuming Tatum even wants to sculpt himself.

2. He loves ceramic dishware

In a weird twist of events, Tatum's board titled "Plate, dish, and cup." is full of hand-painted glazed dishware, mostly adorned with little birds, flowers, baby deer and other dainty animals. Maybe he had a bigger hand in decorating his perfectly styled Beverly Hills home than we thought!

3. He really likes Segways

Tatum pinned links to a single-wheeled electric scooter that hopes to be "cooler than a Segway" and electric skates that claim to be "like Segways for your feet."

4. He wants to fly

On a board titled "Dog Dream," Tatum has pinned a ton of pictures of falling or flying. The pics of people in freefall are actually really artsy and beautiful.

5. He's into sketches

6. He's a history buff

6 Ways I've learned to overcome fear and anxiety over the years

1. Educate yourself on a daily basis

Learn as much as you can when it comes to dealing with your fears and anxieties. The key is to learn those techniques that will help you overcome your fears and phobias. Go to your local bookstore and find a book that can help you find those techniques that work for you. In addition, talk to a professional counselor who can also help you.

2. Manage your anxious thoughts

A person should visualize a red stop sign in their mind when they encounter a fear-provoking thought. When the negative thought comes, a person should think of a red stop sign that serves as a reminder to stop focusing on that thought and to think of something else. A person can then try to think of something positive to replace the negative thought.

3. Your goal is to improve your life

Your goal is to get better. Don't waste your time arguing with your friends or relatives who are giving you a difficult time. In addition, put the time and effort in finding the ways that will help you overcome your persistent fears and stresses. Remember that this is your life so don't get frustrated and give up. There is hope for your situation.

4. Pace yourself

Instead of worrying about how you will get through the week, try to focus on today. Each day can provide us with different opportunities to learn new things and that includes learning how to deal with your problems. Do not try to do too much so that you become overwhelmed. The key is to take it one step at a time.

5. Talk to a professional

Take advantage of any assistance that is available around you. If possible, talk to a professional who can help you manage your fears, phobias, and anxieties. They will be able to provide you with additional advice and insights on how to deal with your current mental health issues. By talking to a professional, a person will be helping themselves because they will become better able to deal with their problems in the future.

6. Find and join a support group

There are many kinds of self-help support groups in your area that can help you relieve your mental health struggles. Talk to your doctor or go to your local church to find out which support groups are in your area. Once you find a group, the next step is to go to all of their meetings and be active. This will help you in finding answers to your problems.

I find these techniques very useful when it comes to overcoming my fear and anxiety. If you have any trouble using these techniques, talk to a qualified counselor.

Tamarind and limoncello cocktail puts an exotic spin on happy hour

My choice of fruit right now is tamarind. It's a sweet and sour fruit found in Asia and Africa that has already gained popularity across the globe because it's so good and used frequently in cooking. In Asia, it is used as a souring agent in savory dishes and as candies when they are ripe and sweeter. Another way to enjoy it is by drinking it as juice, which is readily available in lots of stores. (You can also buy it online or make your own.)

With the heat in mind, here is a drink I made that's so quick and easy that it takes less than five minutes to put together. I love the refreshing, sweet combination of tamarind and lemon in this super-simple cocktail.

Take this test to find out if you could suffer from depression

$
0
0

If you've ever suffered from depression, you know how impactful it can be on your outlook on life. You experience everything in a more negative way, and you tend to jump from zero to emotional pretty quickly.

Sadly, depression has become a much more common illness in America over the last decade. One out of every 10 Americans will suffer a bout of it at least once in their lives. While you can live with various forms of depression, it does affect every aspect of your life, and can seriously impact your productivity and personal relationships.

MoreAre you depressed? Know the signs

Without thinking about it, which face from the image above did your eyes land on first? If it was the angry-looking one, you may have a greater chance of becoming depressed at some point in your life. Essentially, the study at Binghamton took 160 women and performed this same test with them several times over. A computer would generate the images, and the women would have to click on the picture they instinctually looked at first. There was also an eye sensor monitoring their eye movements, in case the women weren't giving perfectly honest answers.

Out of the 100 women, 60 had a history of depression. Overall, the results showed that the women who had already experienced depression at one time or another in their lives tended to pick the angry faces over the neutral or happy ones. This is pretty eye-opening, because it means that how we receive emotional information in our lives can tell a great deal about our own emotional make-up.

However, the research went a bit deeper than that. They kept tabs on the previously depressed women who tended to look at angry faces first and found they were more likely to get depressed in the two years following the study. This makes sense, because 80 percent of people who've previously suffered from depression relapse at some point in the future.

MoreStudy reveals the Mediterranean diet naturally fights depression

The silver lining here is that depression is very treatable. According to Mental Health of America, over 70 percent of people diagnosed with clinical depression are cured with the help of therapy and prescription medication. However, less than half of those affected actually seek out treatment. It's common for people to think depression is just something you deal with on your own, and doesn't require medical attention. Oftentimes, this has to do with people thinking it's a weakness, and are thus ashamed to get help.

The scientists at Binghamton hope to be able to use the elements of this study to help refocus those who have a higher risk of depression on happier images. Perhaps if the mind is retrained before the onset of depression, the likelihood of contracting the illness will diminish? Just a positive thought.

Men describe the first moment they really felt like dads

$

0

When I heard my son say,"Why does Daddy always take so long in the bathroom?"

"Becoming a dad isn't some switch you flip. It's just a new title and a new responsibility to add to the myriad others you accumulate as an adult. It's the most important one, obviously, but it's only as transformative as you allow it to be, for better or worse. I have a kid, but I'm not so much a capital-F father as I am simply the same me I've always been, just much busier and a lot more stressed. I take pride in that.

Yeah, I became a dad the instant I held my son in my hands, but after nearly five years living with a mini-me I helped create, I still don't always feel like one. Then I hear: "Why does Daddy always take so long in the bathroom?" And I realize that as far as my son is concerned, I've always been a dad. And that's what matters. That and having enough toilet paper."

– Mike Julianelle of Dad and Buried

When I first looked at my son

"We were alone in Arizona and we turned into zombies; we were on remote control when our son was born, I do not ever remember any particular feeling of being a dad, there was no space in my head for that, we just had to keep this creature alive! We were in charge of him as we took him out of the hospital after one day.

The only feeling that stands out for me is from when he was born. Immediately after the C-section, they drugged his birth mother up and I was able to move from keeping her calm to look at my son. I immediately had a feeling of recognition, that we had been together before, and we were together again. Then I cried for an hour.

I found the picture above from when Paul was 8 days old. I am in the middle and my Italian Catholic spouse is holding our new baby. This was taken at the Bris, the Hebrew circumcision ceremony. I guess I could say I never thought I could be a dad because I was a gay person, so I was particularly choked up at that. Instead of being an attendee at this type of service, I was finally participating at one where it was my own son being welcomed into my religion, just as I had and my people have for thousands of years."

– Mitch Chaitin of Gay Dad NYC

When my pregnant wife started having food cravings

"Fatherhood hit me even before I even was a father. Six months pregnant, my wife, Sarah, shook me awake at 2:45 a.m. and said, "I'm sorry to wake you up, but can you go buy me a pear?" She'd never expressed much of an interest in pears before. Of course, I said. The woman at the all-night grocery store looked at me, then down at the lone, green pear on the conveyor belt, then back up to me. "My wife's pregnant," I said. Without another word, she just nodded... a nod that seemed to speak to the absurdity, the love and the shared sense of purpose that make up modern parenting. Looking back, though, I realize what her nod really said: Welcome to the other side, honey."

Right after my twins were born prematurely

Image: Lauren Kren

"I felt like a dad right after my twins were born; they were delivered three months prematurely because of complications my son was having and only weighed two pounds at birth.

The day after their birth, I had to go two hours away by car to participate in a three month startup accelerator, and I only got to see them in the NICU on the weekends. I was rooting so hard for them to pull through, and would get excited every weekend to see how much better they looked and hear the stories about how well they were doing.

I thought about the twins every day and loved spending time with them and my wife on the weekends during their two month stay in the NICU."

Larry Wilmore trashes Fox News and the Duggars over Charleston (VIDEO)

$

On Thursday's Nightly Show, Larry Wilmore blasted Fox News's coverage of the massacre — and managed to get in a great dig at the Duggars, too.

The major issue? Fox is trying to spin the vicious murders into an attack on Christianity instead of a racially motivated attack, despite the fact that the killer himself said he chose his victims specifically because they were black.

"I know you guys don't want to admit that racial stuff isn't going on, but how can there be any doubt when it came out of the gunman's mouth?" Wilmore said. "He told his victims, 'I want to shoot black people.' I think when he says black people, he means black people — and not Christians."

More: Jon Stewart was the only person in the word who made sense last night (VIDEO)

"I know we talk about race a lot on this show, but I think we can all agree this time that this is a racially motivated attack," Wilmore said. "It couldn't be clearer when it comes out of the killer's mouth. But even with all of that evidence, on a day like today, Fox News just makes my f***ing head explode."

"He's being very clear," Wilmore said. "Nobody thinks Christians are going around raping everybody and taking over the country. That's not a thing — unless you're a Duggar. Then it's a thing."

Zing!

Wilmore then showed a clip of conservative pastor E.W. Jackson disputing the racial angle of the killings by saying that if they were truly a hate crime, the killer would have chosen "a bar" or "a basketball court" instead of a church.

"He didn't choose a basketball court? What the f***, man?" Wilmore said. "Oh, you mean typically black areas like basketball courts. Why didn't he choose a recording studio? He could have gone to a chitterling farm, (or a) breakdancing class (or) roller rinks. Why wasn't he at a watermelon stand? Why didn't he go there? Any literacy centers? He could have gone there. Look, if he wanted to target a high concentration of black people, why didn't he choose any prison in the United States? Why didn't he do that?"

In fact, Wilmore said, conservative media's refusal to acknowledge the shootings as anything but an anti-Christian act shows that people's understanding of racism may have gotten worse in the last 50 years, not better.

"Let me give you an example," Wilmore explained. "Four black girls were murdered in a church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963. Back then, no one pretended to wonder what the motivation was. If you tried to say it was about religion, even the perpetrators back then would have corrected you. ‘No, we killed them because they're n*****s — that's why we did it.'"

7 Food-inspired baby names that aren't weird

1. Basil

Basil as a baby name

Image: Alden Chadwick/Flickr

Meaning:

If you look back far enough, you can trace Basil to the ancient Greek word for "king". More recently, however, it's associated with the tasty herb of the same name, which — coincidentally — was named as a consequence of its ancient heritage, at which point we come full circle.

Last popular:

While the last time this name was wildly popular was during the 1910s (when 126 per every million babies were named that way), it's about time it made a comeback!

Why it's great:

Not only is it short, snappy and hard to mispronounce, but it also makes a pretty great international name; there are variations in many languages. But perhaps most critically, it doesn't rhyme with anything too terrible. Razzle dazzle Basil?

Famous Basils:

  • Basil Onomagoulos — 8th century Byzantine usurper
  • Basil of Naples — 7th century Duke of Naples
  • Basil Rathbone — 20th century British actor

2. Rosemary

Rosemary as a baby name

Image: Andrew Fogg/Flickr

Meaning:

If you take the Latin course, then Rosemary means "dew of the sea" and is associated with faithfulness, which is quite nice. Of course, it also bears strong ties to the lovely aromatic herb.

Last popular:

At its peak time in the 1940s, 1,128 babies in every million were named Rosemary. It has tapered off a bit since, but has remained on the radar and, in recent years, has risen to about 200 babies per million.

Why it's great:

There is a heap of really cool ways to shorten the name and turn it into adorable nicknames: Rosie, Mary, Rose, Ro, Romy, Rory — take your pick.

Famous Rosemaries:

  • Princess Rosemary of Salm-Salm — 20th century royal
  • Rosemary DeCamp — 20th century actress
  • Rosemary Shrager — 20th century chef

3. Sage

Sage as a baby name

Image: Alice Henneman/Flickr

Meaning:

You can take Sage two ways — to mean "wise", "prophet" and "all-knowing" or "herb", like the one you use to add some flavour to your dishes.

Last popular:

Here's something interesting: Sage as a girls' name only burst onto the scene in 2005, but has remained pretty steady (about 210 per million babies) since then. The boys' version (spelled the same way) took a little longer to get going, showing up on the radar in 2012, but has been consistent since then (about 80 per million babies).

Why it's great:

Aside from a cool meaning, it's a great, snappy unisex name and — from a typographic point of view — is a pretty name to write and read.

Famous Sages:

  • Sage Francis — 20th century hip-hop artist
  • Sage Kotsenburg — 20th century snowboarder, Olympic gold medallist
  • Sage Stallone — 20th century actor, son of Sylvester Stallone

4. Ginger

Ginger as a baby name

Image: Chandrika Nair/Flickr

Meaning:

Pure, virginal, chaste — that is actually the meaning behind the name, but it's also associated with the zesty (and edible) root and a strong and lively spirit that comes part and parcel.

Last popular:

A real hit in the 1970s where it represented 351 per million babies, Ginger disappeared into the abyss soon after, which is a shame really.

Why it's great:

Ginger Rogers, anyone? It's a fun, retro name that is also an important ingredient in some of the world’s best cocktails.

Famous Gingers:

  • Ginger Rogers — 20th century American actress, dancer and singer
  • Ginger Pooley — 20th century rock musician (Smashing Pumpkins, anyone?)
  • Ginger Molloy — 20th century Grand Prix motorcycle road racer

5. Kale

Kale as a baby name

Image: Mervi Eskelinen/Flickr

Meaning:

As a shorter version of "Kalen", it has a Gaelic heritage and when pronounced "Kah-lei" it means "strong and manly" in Hawaiian. However, in its pure, one-syllable form, it shares its moniker with the leafy super food.

Last popular:

While it existed in other forms for much longer, in its modern version, Kale hit the peak of its popularity in 2008 with 128 per million babies.

Why it's great:

Who doesn't love kale? It's a super food for a reason. It's also a fun unisex name and unisex names are — just by their very existence and definition — cool.

Famous Kales:

  • Kale Browne — 20th century actor
  • Kale Kyetaungnyo — 15th century king of Ava
  • Kale Williams — 20th century American civil rights activist

6. Coco

Cocoa as baby name inspiration

Image: Kim Becker/Flickr

Meaning:

In French, Coco is an endearing way you might call someone you love. Deliciously, it was influenced by the word "cocoa" as well as by the French word "cocotte" (kept woman).

Last popular:

In truth, the name never made any great waves worldwide, however, the effortless chic of Coco Chanel has made it an everlasting and ever-current presence.

Why it's great:

It's playful, in some way related to chocolate, it was Coco Chanel's name and, because it never dominates name lists, there probably won't be three Cocos in every class.

Famous Cocos:

  • Coco Jones — 20th century actress
  • Coco Chanel — 19th century fashion designer
  • Coco Rocha — 20th century model

7. Kamille

Chamomile as baby name inspiration

Image: Takashi Hososhima/Flickr

Meaning:

"Perfection" (in Arabic) or "noble" (in French) — no matter how you slice it (or whether you spell it with a "c" or a "k"), it ain't bad. What's more, in German, Kamille means "chamomile" — the daisy-like flowers that make spectacular tea.

Last popular:

Although it doesn't have a long history in the English-speaking world, the name Kamille did hit a peak recently — in 2011 — when 65 out of every million babies were named that way.

Why it's great:

It's a German word that isn't terrifying in the least and also a tasty tea. In addition, it works in several languages and comes with a range of great nicknames: Kammie, Kam, Millie, Mils, Mila.

Famous Kamilles:

There weren't many famous people who spelled their name with a "k", but switch it with a "c" and it's a veritable list of movers and shakers.

  • Camille Desmoulins — 18th century French journalist and revolutionary (a man)
  • Camille Munro — 20th century Miss World Canada winner
  • Camille Grammer — 20th century, one of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills

Fantasy-inspired girls' names are rising fast in popularity

It’s official — parents love unique baby girl names. Each year, the Social Security Administration releases a list of the most popular baby names of the year, compiled from birth certificates from babies born in the United States. This year, the most popular baby girl name is Emma, followed by Olivia. You can see the list of the top girl names of 2014 here. However, if you are looking for a unique name, you may be interested in their list of names that are climbing the charts the fastest.

This year, the baby girl name that made the largest jump in popularity, climbing an amazing 3,000 spots in one year, is the name Aranza. The sudden popularity of this name could be due to the popular Mexican singer Aranza, who sings the theme song for the Spanish soap opera Mirada de Mujer.

The next two names that are increasing in popularity the fastest are also from a famous Spanish soap opera actress — Montserrat is No. 2, followed by the alternate spelling of Monserrat at No. 3. The popularity of these names is probably due to actress Angelique Boyer who plays the character Montserrat Mendoza in the Spanish soap opera Lo que la vida me robó.

Check out the list of the baby girl names climbing the charts the fastest:

Fantasy-inspired names are all over the chart, with Game of Thrones being the show that has inspired the most baby names. The name Maisie is No. 4 on the list, which is probably inspired by actress Maisie Williams who plays Arya Stark in the hit HBO show.

Can you imagine naming your daughter Khaleesi, after the Game of Thrones character played by Emilia Clarke? This unique name jumped 265 spots this year. The name Freya from Witches of East End and Elsa from Frozen are also on the list.

Some of my favorites include Remington (you can call her the cute nickname Remy), Jessa and the lovely name Nova. It is interesting to note that Teen Mom names almost always make this list. The name Paislee is what Teen Mom 2's Adam Lind and Taylor Halbur named their daughter.

Parents who practice BDSM have greater risk of losing kids

$

It's an unfortunate thing that's been going on for decades now. Good parents who happen to have a yen for a less traditional sex life have lost their kids on many occasions when an angry ex or parent decides to make that personal side of them public. When a judge hears a parent described as a "sexual sadist," or having "multiple partners" it tends to tilt the favor away from them. I for one find this deplorable, because unless sexual behavior is enacted on a child, it is personal business, and should hold no weight in a court of law.

MoreFifty Shades quiz: Are you a dom, sub or something in-between?

According to The Daily Best, a woman named Samantha fell victim to this unnecessary targeting back in July 2013. She lost her children because her ex-boyfriend told social services she practiced BDSM. He exaggerated things by saying Samantha and her new boyfriend involved the children in some of their sexual escapades, and the social worker believed the allegations despite there being no proof.

MoreKinkiest city revealed, and it's not Vegas

After her children had been taken away by social services, Samantha asked for a second evaluation and this time, she sought out the counseling of the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom. This not-for-profit does everything they can to help "less traditional" parents in similar situations including those who engage in BDSM and polyamory. They connected Samantha with like-minded legal representation. In no time at all, social services dropped the case of child abuse, and Samantha got her kids back.

However, this case may not have turned out so favorably for Samantha if it had happened just four years ago. NCSF spokesperson Susan Wright told The Daily Beast, "Four years ago, the NCSF had about 115 parents asking for their help and Wright said four out of five of them lost their custody battles." However, according to Wright, those numbers are starting to turn around.

Oddly enough, she says the mass appeal of the novel Fifty Shades of Grey has helped these parents enormously. Wright told The Daily Beast, "It's a silly romance novel, it doesn't accurately represent the BDSM community, but yet it really spread the word that the BDSM community exists because of the active engagement by the media.' Essentially, it made the idea of BDSM less taboo and more mainstream.

MoreBrisbane woman fired for having too many sexual partners

I have close friends who participate in these so-called "kinky" sexual relationships, and just as any parent's sexual experiences are kept hidden from their children, so too are theirs so it's hard to see how sexual preference makes anyone a bad parent. Not to mention, calling something "kinky" is also completely subjective. What once might have fallen under that term (vibrator use, fellatio, anal sex), no longer does. Who's to say what's acceptably kinky and what's unacceptable in today's world?

However, some parents are still having a hard time because their form of "kink" is relatively misunderstood. The poly community would definitely benefit from some mainstream support. Perhaps we can get E L James to write a polyamorous-based sequel? It may sound silly, but if it worked so well for BDSM parents, it's certainly worth a try.

More: 9 Taboo topics we hope Alec Baldwin doesn't shy away from in new memoir

The model was seen out and about in Los Angeles on Friday with several bruises on her face, including on both of her cheeks and her nose.

According to Hollywood Life, the 19-year-old daughter of Alec Baldwin was brutally attacked by three men while out with her boyfriend in Malibu.

"A week ago, a crew of guys were following Ireland around Malibu, tailing her car super close," a source revealed to the Daily Mail. "So Ireland came back to Soba Recovery Center and got one of the bodyguards at the center to come out and say the harassment needs to stop."

More: Ireland Baldwin's girlfriend blabs to the press about romance

Baldwin checked out of the rehab center less than two months ago, after checking in to receive treatment for emotional trauma. She announced the three-week stay on Twitter back in April, explaining she was "getting the intensive therapy" she needed and adding that "someday I'll feel ready to share my story."

If the reports about Baldwin getting attacked are true, we hope for her safety that the men were caught and arrested.

And while this is a happy day for the Baldwin family, since Alec and his wife Hilaria just welcomed Rafael Thomas, their first baby boy together, Ireland Baldwin's mood was understandably somber as she was out and about in a peach-colored sweatshirt and long leggings, despite the hot summer day.

Though Baldwin has yet to publicly address the rumors of her attack or explain the bruises on her face, she did write a curious tweet on June 15, when the attack allegedly occurred, that might just sum up what she went through.

'Relentlessly Gay' yard complaint gets best response possible

She started a Relentlessly Gay GoFundMe campaign to raise money to make her yard the gayest yard anyone’s ever seen!

Here’s the note:

relentlessly gay note

relentlessly gay note

I'll give this to her neighbor, she might be a petty bigot, but she has a real knack for words. "Relentlessly Gay" should be the name of a band or memoir or brand of cologne or something.

Here was Relentlessly Gay's response on her GoFundMe page.

"Needless to say... I need more rainbows... Many, many more rainbows..." Relentlessly writes. "I am a widow and mother of four children, my youngest is in high school and I WILL NOT Relent to Hatred. Instead I will battle with whimsy and beauty and laughter and love, wrapped around my home, yard and family.

"Thanks for your relentlessly gay support!"

The project has captured the attention of people across the world. In fact, Relentlessly has already raised a staggering $33,058 so far, and she'd only asked for $5,000. One paint contractor in Baltimore offered to paint her entire house like a rainbow. Others suggest naked water features and unicorns might be nice additions. Others just offer to come dressed colorfully and dance in her yard. Bet that would have her neighbor clutching the old pearls, huh?

Relentlessly also says she's going to post a tutorial on her rainbow light project that started this whole thing. It's always nice to see humor and love winning out over hate wrapped in religion. If that's relentlessly gay, then count me in.

Creamy comfort food with less guilt: Lightened-up mushroom fettuccine

$

There's nothing I love more than a big bowl of creamy pasta comfort (it's the Italian in me), and this creamy mushroom fettuccine is no exception. A few twirls of the fork might've been sneaked in while I was cleaning this up, and I can tell you one thing: This will be the first indulgence I enjoy after the challenge is over. Twenty-eight days ago, I would've told you it'd be chocolate, but today I'm saying pasta beats chocolate, and that's how you know this is good. And bonus, this lightened-up version uses Greek yogurt in place of heavy cream.

mushroom fettucine

Creamy mushroom fettuccine recipe

Dig into this bowl of creamy comfort, but leave the guilt at home. Made with crème fraîche and Greek yogurt, this fettuccine is incredibly creamy, yet there's no heavy cream in sight.

Serves 4

Prep time: 5 minutes | Cook time: 15 minutes | Total time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound fettuccine
  • 20 ounces sliced mushrooms
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3 shallots, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • Salt and pepper
  • 8 ounces crème fraîche
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/4 cup chopped parsley

Directions:

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Once the water is boiling, add the pasta, and cook according to the package directions.
  2. Meanwhile, heat the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once it has melted, add the shallots, and cook for about 2 minutes, until softened.
  3. Add the garlic, cook for 30 seconds, and then add the mushrooms. Give a quick stir, and let the mushrooms cook untouched for about 5 minutes, until softened.
  4. Stir the mushrooms, season with salt and pepper, and then stir in the crème fraîche and Greek yogurt.
  5. Drain the pasta, reserving about 1/2 cup of the pasta water. Add the pasta to the skillet, and toss with the mushrooms until fully incorporated and coated with the creamy sauce. Add some pasta water as needed to thin out.
  6. Garnish with parsley, and serve immediately.

12 Plants that are poisonous to cats (INFOGRAPHIC)

$
0
0

There are over 700 varieties of plants that can be harmful to your cat if ingested. However, since such a comprehensive list would be a bit hard to digest, here’s a list of the most common plants you might have in and around your house that you should keep out of your cat’s reach. Tina Wismer, DVM, medical director of the ASPCA’s poison control center, suggests if you suspect your cat has eaten any part of them, regardless of whether or not it’s showing symptoms, call your vet immediately.

1. Lilies (all varieties)

Just one bite of a leaf or the flower’s pollen could cause lethargy and vomiting within one hour of consumption. If left untreated, your cat could go into kidney failure. The pollen alone can be lethal to your feline friend.

2. Any calcium oxalate plants — including philodendrons, Chinese evergreens, Virginia creepers, spinach, agaves, tea leaves, rhubarb and taro

The poisonous part of these indoor and outdoor plants are the microscopic needle-like barbs on their stems and leaves. If bitten, they cause inflammation in the mouth and gums and result in excessive drooling and vomiting.

You can take care of the symptoms yourself by giving your cat calcium in the form of milk, yogurt, sour cream or ice cream. In rare cases, the swelling could inhibit breathing, so keep an eye on your pet for 48 hours.

3. Dracaena plants

There are about 40 varieties of this popular, leafy houseplant, including the dragon plant. If cats eat the long fronds typical of these plants, they’ll become depressed, lose their appetites and possibly even vomit blood. However, it’s usually not a fatal reaction, and symptoms tend to go away after 12 to 24 hours. Still, you should keep an eye out for worsening symptoms, and take your cat to the vet if it doesn't start to recover after 24 hours.

4. Autumn crocus

Eating any part of this flowery plant can cause an intense burning sensation in the mouth, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, liver damage, kidney damage and even heart arrhythmias. Get your pet to the vet immediately if you suspect he/she has snacked on it.

5. Daffodils

If you have an outdoor cat, be very wary of its tendency to get into your or your neighbor’s daffodil beds. Ingestion of any portion can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, arrhythmias, convulsions and a major drop in blood pressure. Call your vet ASAP.

6. Tulips

If you have them planted outside, or in a vase inside, they’re a big no-no for cats. While not fatal, taking a bite of them (especially the bulb) can cause oral irritation, excessive drooling and nausea.

7. Sago palm

This long-leafed, tree-like plant is extremely poisonous to cats. It used to be mainly an outdoor plant, but now it’s often found on indoor window sills. While the seeds and pods are the most poisonous, any bite can cause bloody vomiting and diarrhea, bleeding disorders, liver failure and death. This is definitely worthy of an emergency vet trip.

8. Azaleas/rhododendrons

Even just a few leaves can result in oral irritation, vomiting and diarrhea. In severe cases, ingestion can cause a drop in blood pressure, coma and death, so you’ll want to at least give your vet a call if you notice symptoms.

9. Kalanchoe

Also known as the “mother-in-law plant,” this common indoor plant has a bunch of small, very dense flowers and is thus super-tempting to cats. However, if a cat eats any part of it, it can cause vomiting and diarrhea. In rare cases, heart arrhythmias can occur, so while not a dire emergency, a vet appointment should be made to assess the situation.

10. Marijuana

While you might think it would be funny to get a cat high, ingestion of cannabis can cause a whole host of problems. It will affect the nervous system and your pet’s coordination, then cause vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, increased heart rate, seizures and could even put it in a coma.

If you suspect he/she ate even one bud, get him/her to your vet pronto.

11. Aloe vera

It may cure your burns, but it’ll set your cat back significantly. Symptoms of ingestion include vomiting, depression, diarrhea, seizures, change in urine color and can even cause anorexia (for real). Again, not life-threatening, but the side effects if left untreated could severely affect your pet’s quality of life, so call your vet.

12. Ivy (all forms)

This is certainly relevant if you have an outdoor cat. Symptoms of ingestion include vomiting, abdominal pain, hypersalivation and diarrhea. Not fatal but certainly distressing. Make sure your pet gets lots of fluids if it eats any of the ivy leaves especially, and keep an eye out for worsening symptoms.

What to expect from your vet

Obviously, a vet will want to know what your cat ate that made it sick. If you’re not sure, take pictures of the plants in your house and any nearby that are on this list to help your vet narrow it down. If your cat ingested a toxic plant but the symptoms are not life-threatening, she/he may suggest inducing vomit at home via charcoal tablets, so it’s a good idea to have some on hand for emergencies. However, even if you suspect a poisoning, don’t just go for the charcoal without contacting your vet first.

If your cat ingests something more toxic, like lilies, your vet will most likely put it on intravenous fluids for a few days to flush out the toxins. If you don’t have a vet on hand, call the ASPCA’s 24-hour emergency poison hotline number at 1-888-426-4435 for help.
