Jason Derulo is on Tinder... sort of

$

Well, sort of.

More: Jordin Sparks trashes Jason Derulo on her new single — read the lyrics

The hitmaker announced Friday he's taking to the popular hookup app to try something totally new: It's where he'll debut the upcoming video for his song "Want to Want Me," which will drop March 23.

It's not a totally unprecedented idea — music videos have already debuted on SnapChat, another popular app. Derulo told Us Weekly he picked Tinder because of its serious up-and-coming status in the technology world.

"Social media and dating together is the new wave," he explained to the mag. "It is the source of one-half of the relationships in 2015, and I’m all about being part of the new wave."

OK, we can see that being legit. But what about actually using the app for its intended purpose? Will Derulo be doing any swiping any time soon? It's unlikely, he said. Despite his recent split from singer Jordin Sparks, Derulo admitted to Us Weekly he doesn't actually use Tinder... yet.

"I would if it wasn't so unpredictable," he said. "I'd probably meet some huge fans, but otherwise it's not a safe bet. Maybe if they come up with a version of Tinder for celebrities, then I would do it. I do think it is a beautiful thing and works."

Bad news for all of us who would totally swipe right on Derulo (who are we kidding, that's all of us).

Unlike SnapChat, though, Tinder doesn't really have any sort of video viewing feature built in, which makes us wonder exactly how Derulo is going to pull this off. Lucky for him, we're more than willing to keep swiping until we figure it out.

John Stamos has to fend off selfies after sex

Be honest: If you were with John Stamos, you'd want to take a selfie, right? Who wouldn't? You're with the iconic Uncle Jesse from Full House! Get that ish on social media, stat!

Apparently, that need to document being in the presence of a star is more problematic for Stamos than we ever could have guessed — in Ali Adler's new book, How to F*** a Woman, Stamos talks about how some women "have wanted selfies" after sex.

And that's not all they want. Some even try to snag a souvenir before leaving, Stamos said.

"One girl really wanted my shirt," he dished. "Like a souvenir."

Those aren't the only sexy secrets Stamos is sharing these days. He also opened up all about how he makes the magic happen in the bedroom.

"I'm 51 years old," he said. "I've had some experiences but it's about listening, asking, talking. Maybe some girls are afraid of communicating. But I find most aren't if you ask, 'Does this feel good?' Or listen to her body like an instrument. I guess I do approach sex in a musical way. With me it's more rhythm than melody with a woman... but it’s all listening."

And that's not all. It turns out Stamos is, shall we say, attentive to his partners.

"When music clicks you can feel it," he added. "You have to listen to other musicians. With women, you have to listen to their bodies. I'd rather have a woman have 10 orgasms than me have 10 orgasms."

According to Us Weekly, Stamos hasn't been publicly linked to anyone since his split with ex-wife Rebecca Romijn in 2005. That hasn't stopped him from dating, though it sounds like he could stand to work on those communication skills outside of the bedroom — he went on a dinner date with Amy Poehler last year, but she had no idea it was a date.

"I asked her out on a date and we had a really nice time," Stamos explained. "Then I hear she thought it wasn't a date. It was a date in my eyes."

Glee series finale: Why we're OK with how it ended

More: Scream Queens: 9 Things to know about Ryan Murphy's new series

And although the passing of Cory Monteith in 2013 meant the show couldn't quite go out the way Ryan Murphy had originally intended, we think that, ultimately, Glee's finale was a fitting coda to a show that may have lost its way somewhere along the line, but never lost its heart. Here are the reasons why we think it was as perfect as it could have been.

The tribute to Finn

Finn

There was never a question of whether or not Glee would pay tribute to its quarterback in its final installment, but there was a lot of speculation about what that tribute would look like. What we got was the most fitting and poignant commemoration we could have gotten. How difficult it must have been to include Finn Hudson without actually having Cory Monteith there to play him, but we love that we got to see him anyway — belting out "Don't Stop Believin'" with New Directions' original members in that scene from the pilot where anyone with any emotional capacity whatsoever realized they should give this show a chance.

And then there was the rededication of the Finn Hudson Auditorium. The collective tears cried during this final moment are enough to see California overcome the drought. This beautiful dedication backlit with the cast singing One Republic's "I Lived" ensured Glee went out exactly the same way it began: giving us chills.

Rachel wins a Tony

Rachel Tony

Damn straight she did. And we couldn't be happier to find out that the ultimate dream Rachel had for herself all the way back in Season 1 was finally realized. The best part about it was that it wasn't just alluded to — we actually got to see it. Her speech in which she dedicated her win to Will was just beautiful and even more beautiful was watching all of her friends cheer her on with complete unabashed joy. You did good, Rachel Berry; you did good.

Klaine forever

Klaine

We couldn't have Finchel, but we got Klaine. And Rachel carrying Klaine's baby. And I'll be damned if that baby doesn't come out singing a show tune.

The glee club lives on

ND

All anybody really wants when one of their favorite shows ends is to know that things will go on just the way they were. Glee did just that with the reveal that New Directions will live on, but they also gave us some changes that we are totally cool with. Sam is now at the helm of New Directions, and we are more than OK with Will losing his gig as the group's leader because he's now the principal of McKinley — which is now a performing arts school. Gosh, that guy came a long way from being a really mediocre Spanish teacher with a penchant for vests and seemingly only having high schoolers for friends.

Overall, the Glee series finale was a beautiful and touching end to a show that started out as a juggernaut and changed the landscape of what a TV show could be. While at its end it wasn't the phenomenon it was in the beginning, Glee was a show about possibilities and following your dreams, and its finale couldn't have stayed more true to that vision.

What did you think of Glee's series finale? Are you happy with how it went out? Let us know down in the comments!

This healthy chicken salad is a warm welcome to spring

$

For this healthy salad, I marinated chicken breast in a citrus champagne vinegar marinade. If you can't find champagne vinegar, then substitute with apple cider vinegar since it has a slightly sweet flavor. I like to marinate my chicken overnight, but aim for at least 2 hours to ensure the best flavor. Once the chicken is grilled, I slice it and serve it over fresh, organic spring greens topped with sweet dried apricots, crunchy roasted cashew pieces and Gorgonzola cheese. If you are not familiar with Gorgonzola, while delicious, it has a pungent flavor and taste, so a little goes a long way.

Apricot walnut Gorgonzola grilled chicken salad recipe

Chicken breast is marinated in a sweet and tangy champagne vinegar, then grilled and served over fresh greens topped with dried apricots, walnuts and creamy Gorgonzola cheese.

Serves 4

Prep time: 10 minutes | Inactive time: 2 hours (minimum) | Cook time: 12 minutes | Total time: 2 hours 22 minutes

Ingredients:

For the chicken

  • 2 large chicken breasts
  • 1/4 cup champagne vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey
  • 1 sweet navel orange, juiced
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the salad

  • 8 cups fresh, organic salad greens
  • 2 cups cooked quinoa (optional)
  • 1/4 small red onion, sliced thin
  • 1 small cucumber, diced
  • 1/4 cup dried apricots, diced
  • 1/4 cup toasted cashews
  • 1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion
  • 1/4 cup dried cranberries or dried cherries
  • 1/2 cup crumbled Gorgonzola cheese

Directions:

  1. Place the chicken breasts into a plastic zip-top bag. In a bowl, combine all the ingredients for the marinade, and mix well.
  2. Pour the marinade over the chicken, and close the bag. Shake the bag to evenly coat the chicken, and place in the refrigerator for several hours or overnight.
  3. Heat a grill pan to medium-high heat. Place the chicken breasts on the grill pan, and grill for about 6 minutes per side or until the centers of the chicken are no longer pink and the juices run clear.
  4. Remove the chicken from the pan, and allow it to cool for 2 to 3 minutes. Slice the chicken breasts into strips, and set aside.
  5. To arrange the salad, place all the organic greens into a large salad bowl, add the cooked quinoa, and toss well.
  6. Top the greens with the red onions, cucumber, dried apricots and cashews, and finish off with the Gorgonzola cheese.
  7. Finally, add the grilled chicken on top of the finished salad, drizzle your favorite salad dressing on top, and toss well. Divide among salad plates, and serve immediately.

5-Ingredient cookie butter fudge is a delicious spin on a sweet treat

$

Cookie butter — also commonly known as Speculoos — is an amazingly delicious treat found in Europe, especially in areas such as the Netherlands, Germany and other neighboring countries. With an appearance and consistency very similar to that of peanut butter, Speculoos is made from crushed cookies and tastes almost like a gingerbread cookie.

I took the idea of fudge but swapped out the peanut butter and instead used cookie butter in its place. This rich and very decadent treat is perfect when you want a little something sweet to get your sugar fix. The spices and gingerlike taste add a nice contrast against the sweet flavor, creating something super satisfying.

5-Ingredient cookie butter fudge recipe

Inspired by Savory Nothings

Speculoos is used as the base in this fudge recipe, yielding a sweet and spicy mix of contrasting flavors to this bite-size dessert.

Yields 24

Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 10 minutes | Inactive time: 2 hours | Total time: 2 hours 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1-3/4 cups pure cane sugar
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1-1/4 cups Speculoos or cookie butter

Directions:

  1. Line an 8-inch baking dish with aluminum foil, and set it aside.
  2. To a pan over medium-high heat, add all the ingredients except for the cookie butter, and bring to a light boil, about 5 minutes.
  3. Reduce the heat to medium-low, and carefully stir in the cookie butter. Continue simmering the mixture until it becomes nice and thick, about 4 to 5 additional minutes.
  4. Carefully pour the hot mixture into the baking dish, and allow it cool for 10 minutes.
  5. Place the dish into the refrigerator, and chill it for 2 hours or until the fudge is very firm.
  6. Remove the fudge from the baking dish, and cut it into desired-size pieces.
  7. Store in an airtight container for up to a week.

Eggheads with Hair

Eggheads with hair - Easter crafts for kids

These eggheads with cress hair would look so cute sitting on your windowsill —  and the kids are sure to love them. You simply clean out an egg and use a marker to create a funny face. Place some moist cotton inside for the seeds. Sprinkle with cress seeds (or grass seeds will work also). The seeds will sprout in only a few days. Cress is also considered a superfood, so snip it off and sprinkle it on a salad or sandwich.

You can also use plastic eggs as planters for your eggheads. How cute is this?

Place another piece of contact paper on top to enclose the artwork and hang it on the window with a pretty piece of yarn.

Texture eggs

I'll admit it — dyeing eggs isn't as fun as the box makes it appear. It is messy, it stains your hands (and the countertops) and the eggs always turn a weird brown color instead of the colorful tie-dye creations you are attempting. I love this idea of gluing fabric, sequins, yarn and buttons to eggs to make them not only colorful, but furry as well. Check out Twodaloo for the tutorial and to find out how these texture eggs also aid in development.

Companies preying on fear of Down syndrome owe women the truth

$
0
0

With the advent of NIPS tests, more expectant women than ever are receiving test results from companies preying on their fear of the unknown, marketing enlightenment about genetic "abnormalities" without providing information about the realities of genetic conditions such as Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome).

Sequenom was first to market in 2011 with MaterniT21. Competitors soon followed: Ariosa’s Harmony (now owned by Roche), Verinata’s Verifi (now owned by Illumina) and Natera’s Panorama. Each test of the mother's blood promises high detection rates and low false negatives.

Most expectant women don't walk into their first ultrasound expecting and eager to research genetic conditions. They're excited or nervous or afraid or a combination of all those things — but rarely are they expecting to learn their unborn child has a genetic condition.

That's where NIPS test manufacturers see their sweet spot: a pregnant woman seeking to learn everything possible about her unborn baby without understanding what that information might mean. "As long as my baby is healthy," many women say.

And so women ask for or are offered these groundbreaking tests (which, notably, are not conclusive). The results arrive as a mere mathematical probability, and the black hole of information begins to widen.

On whom is the onus to explain the test results and educate an expectant mother about what each condition really means today? OBs, genetic counselors, medical geneticists and midwives should provide expectant mothers with accurate, balanced information about Down syndrome and other genetic conditions.

Mark Leach blogs at Down Syndrome Prenatal Diagnosis and shares the guidelines and resources for medical providers delivering a Down syndrome diagnosis. Stephanie Meredith, whose teenage son has Down syndrome, couldn't find what she felt other expectant parents deserved to access, so she and her husband created the Lettercase booklet, a resource considered the gold standard by the medical community.

"Our goal with the Lettercase booklet was to make sure that every expectant parent receives the kind of support and accurate information that was so meaningful to us," Meredith shares.

Despite Meredith's and Leach's efforts, medical professionals too often have zero or outdated information on hand, fail to introduce adoption as an alternative to raising a child with Down syndrome or have a blatant bias either toward continuing or terminating the pregnancy. An examination room is no place for personal bias, and a mother receiving an unexpected test result should not be sent on safari to the World Wide Web without professional guidance.

What's the solution? Why shouldn't we demand more from companies marketing to expectant mothers' fear of the unknown and profiting from resulting uncertainty?

March 21 is World Down Syndrome Day, a timely opportunity for companies making millions from NIPS tests to commit to informing the women who receive their results. Providing accurate, balanced information seems a small price to pay for raking in mindboggling profits that are only increased by fear.

As for Maria, after scheduling the abortion, she and her husband discovered the Down Syndrome Diagnosis Network (DSDN), a group formed by moms of children with Down syndrome who saw the need for support and information at every phase of having a child with Down syndrome.

"Accurate, unbiased information helped us decide against abortion," Maria says, also crediting social media interactions with other parents and research she and her husband did about Targeted Nutritional Intervention.

She found those resources on her own, and today, her 3-month-old daughter is thriving.

Little girls and the little lessons that make them love themselves

$
0
0

As a single mom to three girls, I have come up with some ways to help my girls love themselves even when others act like they don't.

Change the way they see it

When my oldest was at the pool and swam up to her friend that she has had forever and asked her to swim, only to be turned down despite being the only kids in the pool, I was devastated. Having gone to college with the mother, who was chatting on her phone on the deck not paying any attention, I was a little more than angry as well. When my daughter, feelings clearly hurt, got out of the pool to cry on the bench, I had to hold back my instinct to cause a scene. Instead, I got out of the pool myself and went and sat by my daughter. Instead of telling her that is it OK and she will make other friends, I told her to think about it from the girl's perspective. Maybe she was having a bad day. Maybe she was feeling sad and didn't feel like playing. Or maybe she was not the kind of friend my daughter wanted because she could not play nice. When my daughter chimed in that, "Yeah, maybe she lost a favorite toy today!" and visibly seemed to regain her happy, I was glad. She bounded back into the pool and ignored the girl and played with her sisters and me with smiles! Taking the issue away from them and giving it a new face can often help them to not take it personally.

Destroy the image of perfection

It is hard enough for grown women to feel beautiful and worthy in the world of Photoshop and auto-tune, so watching little girls soak up the "perfect" image is hard, too. The only way I know how to destroy that image and show that everyone deserves love no matter what, is to use myself as an example. Despite the fact that I have graying hair, dry splotchy skin, a belly that makes people ask if I am pregnant (I so am not) and a little too much weight for my short frame, I am beautiful. I have amazing eyes, a smile that shines brightly and the confidence to walk with my head up. We always talk about the awesome things about ourselves as opposed to what's wrong. Real life will trump plastic life any day.

It's OK to need improvement

I think that it is OK for kids not to be the best at everything. I, personally, don't think a kid needs a ribbon just for showing up. However, I see the smiles on their faces when they win something for giving it their best shot. I think that sometimes we parents want our kids to be the best or at least feel like they are the best at anything they do. The truth is, my kids have things they just will never do well, and that is totally OK. But if they need improvement in an area, it is OK to constructively tell them so. There is no shame in hiring a tutor, having extra practices for a skill or going back to the basics to improve their reading. Insulting them is bad. But guiding them to learn to improve is a great thing!

Love yourself

As I mentioned in my self-esteem article, showing by example is a powerful tool for teaching kids. Getting them to love themselves while you tear yourself down is contradictory. Even if you have to fake it, love yourself in front of your kids. When your friends are around and the kids are in sight, refrain from tearing down your smallest flaws. I am amazed at what my girls have overheard that I thought they didn't. Love yourself and allow yourself to thrive as you are and they can not help but to want to do the same!

Little girls are sugar and spice and everything nice. But they are also the women of tomorrow. Teaching them to count on themselves, to love themselves and to rely on their inner voice will be with them their entire lives!

Breakfast portobellos are the 20-minute brunch you've been waiting for

There's just something about the thought of veggies first thing in the morning that makes me want to gag. Spinach? No thanks. Bring on the eggs, bacon, bread, potatoes, cereal, oatmeal — anything except something green.

But then I was met face to face with a portobello explosion in my fridge (four for $1 got the best of me at the grocery store), and the idea to stuff them for breakfast came to be.

Weirdly, I'm very much OK with this veggified breakfast. I think it's the cheese and bacon doing their part to make me forget I'm eating spinach and mushrooms. Oh, and the runny egg. Runny eggs cure all.

Here's how much an emergency vet visit can really cost

$
0
0

When we reached out to get some numbers, we were shocked. We aren't talking about hundreds of dollars but rather thousands! How do those costs add up so fast, and what can you do about it?

How much can a pet emergency cost?

Many of the people we asked quoted multiple thousands of dollars.

  • Lisa Martin's ex's dog racked up a bill of $4,000 after being hit by a car.
  • Gayle Carson has had three animals (of many) over the years with pet emergencies that racked up charges of $5,000 — each.
  • Amy Krakow's Weimaraner needed emergency surgery for bloat (a very serious condition), which cost around $3,000.

Why so expensive?

When we take our pets to the vet, it always seems like their appointments are so much cheaper than ours, but when it's an emergency, the tab can get out of hand. Kristen Vance, a veterinarian with Homeward Bound Mobile Vet, says there are many factors involved. She tells us that in an ER setting, there are often more expensive supplies needed to treat animals. They'll need diagnostics like blood work and X-rays done and may even need IV medications.

Another emergency vet reached out to us to explain even more. Melanie Galanis of Artemis Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Services gave us a little breakdown of prices. The prices she gave are specific to the mid-Atlantic area, and at least one other person noted that even in the same city, prices can vary greatly, so you can't "take these to the bank," but the info she provided us is invaluable in showing how it gets so expensive so quickly.

  • Emergency visit: $90-$120
  • Diagnostics (i.e., radiographs, blood work, etc.): $200-$250 each
  • Outpatient treatment: Starts at $200
  • 24 hours of Hospitalization (including IV fluids and meds, etc.): Starts at $1,200

She goes on to note that larger dogs (over 80 pounds) could be more expensive because they need more of things like meds and fluids. She also warns that if the emergency requires anesthesia and surgery, the cost could easily exceed $3,000 to $4,000 for things like bloat or a C-section.

How to afford an emergency

When we put our call out for input on this, we asked if there was anything people could do to lower the cost. We even asked about negotiating the price (you can do it with human doctors, so why not?). But the vets noted that they're unlikely to negotiate (at least not as much as you'd like). They don't charge as much markup as human doctors, but they still have bills to pay.

We also asked about payment plans, but that's unlikely, too, it seems. Since you typically only see an emergency vet when you have an emergency, they don't have the relationship with you your normal vet may, and it just isn't good business sense. They have a building to pay for, equipment they need and the supporting employees they pay. And that's fair.

But that's not the end of it. In fact, several of the people who responded (including the vets) did have advice.

Communicate. Dr. Galanis said that it's imperative for owners to communicate with the vet about their finances. They can work with you to find cheaper alternatives without compromising your pet's health when at all possible. She also suggests staying current with your wellness visits and to consider (for medications that apply) having them filled at human pharmacies where they may (or may not) be cheaper. But that's not the only option.

Get pet insurance. Jim Angleton, president of AEGIS FinServe Corp., had several emergency vet situations with his animals over the years. While it's not a product his company sells, Angleton took the time to respond personally in the hopes his own personal experiences could help other pet owners. According to him, pet insurance "is a must and worth every penny." He says his premiums are only $59 a month with a deductible of $500 and that his meds cost much less.

Get specialized credit. Another secret several respondents (including vets) noted was CareCredit. And it's not just for your pets but for you, too. It's built-in financing for medical needs (even your pet's). Lisa Martin, who you might remember from an example above, says her boyfriend had CareCredit and it saved him (and his dog). She's not the only one who recommended it, but she spoke so highly, she had to close with, "And no, I do not represent the company! I am just a huge fan."

Slow Cooker Sunday: Chicken burrito bowls with a tropical flair

$

In this recipe, I took the concept and flavors of a stuffed burrito and transformed them into a burrito bowl (minus the tortilla). Chicken breast is slow-cooked in a homemade tropical pineapple salsa, shredded and then served over fluffy rice and finished with sautéed peppers, onions and fresh fixings. The slow-cooked chicken makes great leftovers that can be doubled and used in salads, wraps or healthy soft tacos.

Tropical slow cooker chicken burrito bowls recipe

Chicken slow-cooked in a tropical salsa is shredded, served over rice and finished with fresh toppings for a super-easy burrito bowl. Tip: Use the leftover chicken on top of a big green salad, or prepare a wrap, and enjoy it for lunch the following day.

Serves 4

Prep time: 30 minutes | Cook time: 4 hours | Total time: 4 hours 30 minutes

Ingredients:

For the pineapple salsa chicken

  • 1 cup fresh pineapple
  • 1/2 cup fresh lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons agave or honey
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce
  • 1 sweet onion, diced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 jalapeño pepper, halved, seeds removed
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 tablespoon taco seasoning
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 large chicken breasts

For the burrito bowls

  • 2 cups cooked white or brown rice
  • 1/2 cup tomatoes, diced
  • 1/2 small red onion, diced
  • 1 cup green or red salsa
  • 2 avocados, sliced
  • Sour cream, cheese, fresh cilantro and pineapple wedge, for garnish (optional)

Directions:

  1. Place all the pineapple salsa ingredients (except for the chicken) into a food processor, and blend until smooth.
  2. Lay the chicken breasts in the bottom of the slow cooker, and pour the pineapple salsa on top. Set the cooker on high for 4 hours.
  3. Once the chicken has cooked completely, remove it from the slow cooker, and shred it using 2 forks. Return the chicken to the slow cooker, and mix it with the salsa and chicken juices.
  4. To assemble the bowls, divide the cooked rice among 4 bowls. Top each bowl with the shredded pineapple salsa chicken, and finish with your toppings of choice (tomatoes, onions, salsa avocado, sour cream, cheese or fresh cilantro).
  5. Garnish the burrito bowls with a fresh pineapple wedge, and serve warm.
  6. Store any leftovers for up to 3 days in the refrigerator.

British men are domestic gods, but what about Aussie blokes?

$

A new survey has found that British men are more open to doing chores around the home than they've ever been before. And you know what gets a woman hot under the collar — a man who doesn't mind getting elbow-deep in dishwater. Ooh!

But that's because no-one likes to do the dishes, really, and with men and women both putting the same amount of hours in at the office in many cases, the push for equal distribution of home chores is a necessary shift that can't happen soon enough.

The guys in the U.K. are getting on board, though, with research showing one in five men are in charge of cooking dinner every night, while one in 10 men regularly do the washing up.

And the gender balance is going both ways, too, ladies, with the women in the study admitting to taking on chores their mothers might not have attempted or just left to the man of the house.

But how do Australian men stack up? Are they just as open to sharing the workload at home?

The latest Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey, released late last year, shows that between 2000 and 2011 women were the main breadwinners in one of every four households, but were doing more than twice the amount of housework as their partners.

Women spend around 16 hours per week doing housework, while male partners only do around eight. So why aren't guys spending more time doing the washing? It turns out that both men and women are spending less time maintaining the home. Weekends aren't spent doing spring cleaning, but rather, enjoying the time off or planning weekends away. People are more conscious of time and so prioritise it differently to, say, how our parents did. Overall, we're either outsourcing help around the house or we're living in messier homes.

What do you think? Who does the most around the house in your family? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

How to fix Wi-Fi the next time it goes down (INFOGRAPHIC)

$

1. Check for a software solution

Most computer operating software offers a tool to troubleshoot connectivity issues. For Windows, you can find the troubleshooter on the "control panel" under "network and sharing" and "troubleshoot problems."

2. Double-check cable connections

Once you’ve ruled out a software problem, check all of the cables connecting your router to its power source and your computer.

3. Reboot the router

If the router is properly connected, the next likely culprit would be the router itself. Reboot the router by disconnecting it completely from its power source for a full 10 seconds. No cheating! You really do need to leave it unplugged that long. After 10 seconds, plug it back in and see if your connectivity returns.

4. Splitters

If your Wi-Fi signal unexpectedly drops on the reg, check out your splitters. If you have a -3.5dB splitter to your broadband modem (cable or FIOS) upgrade it to a -7dB version to boost the signal. If you have a three-way splitter coming to your router, but only use it for two cables, consider replacing it with a two-way splitter for a better signal.

5. Intermittent router shutdown

If your router is shutting itself down intermittently, for no apparent reason, you might have an older router that’s overheating. Check the vents on the router and clear out the dust with compressed air to maximize ventilation and cooling.

6. Test for speed

If your Wi-Fi is operating but still running slow, consider running an easy test to make sure you’re getting the right amount of bandwidth from your internet service provider (ISP). There are free diagnostic tools you can use to run a speed test on your home internet signal, including Speedtest.net, Speedtest.org and apps like WiFi SweetSpots.

7. Consider making the call

Most internet service providers have diagnostic tools to help you troubleshoot your Wi-Fi problems, including pinging your router remotely to make sure it’s receiving a signal. You might have to wait on hold, but once you get the right person on the phone, they can be very helpful. Also, if you have access to a working internet connection through your cell network provider, consider the live chat options with your ISP customer service, which often have shorter wait times and can be much more effective in solving your problems.

Could video games cause your child to commit a sex crime?

$
0
0

There's nothing worse than hearing about a child who has become the victim of sexual violence, but hearing that the perpetrator was also a child just turns this horrific topic even more incomprehensible.

With video games, music videos, pornographic content and other adult material becoming so easily accessible by children, it seems children have been influenced to the point where they're unable to determine what sort of behaviour is appropriate and socially acceptable.

They're Hetty Johnston's sentiments, too. Johnston is the CEO of Bravehearts, an organisation that works to stop child abuse.

"I think they are being exposed to adult messaging and sexualised messaging at very young ages, so they're exploring and acting out," she told the Daily Telegraph.

According to the Daily Telegraph's report, sex attacks between school students have increased exponentially in the last 10 years because children don't know exactly what appropriate behaviour even is.

If a child plays a video game where bashing and killing prostitutes is rewarded, if they come across pornographic content that shows women being used for the sexual gratification of men, if ideas of sexual consent are not explained or discussed, then of course children are going to watch that content and think that it is okay. Especially if there is no-one there to guide and explain to them the social context for adult content.

Child sexual assaults have reportedly increased by almost 20 per cent over the last decade, while indecent assault has increased by 60 per cent, resulting in 75 sexual assaults and 280 indecent assaults reported by schools last year.

According to one study, early exposure to pornographic material, at 14 years of age or under, has been linked to inappropriate sexual practices and even rape.

Children are like sponges. They soak up all the information that is put in front of them, often imitating and replicating what they see, hear and read.

If you so much as swear in the carpark one stressful afternoon at the shops, you can bet little Bobby is going to remember that and start dropping F-bombs around the house when you least expect it. How can we expect the same level of attention not to be placed on things such as pornography and graphic adult content in video games?

Children act out and replicate the world around them. And if pornography and violence is what they're witnessing, then they, too, will act that out in their lives.

Have you talked about the adult content in video games and television programs with your own children? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

The great naked experiment: Why 7 days without clothes was so worth it

$
0
0

There's an unmatchable freedom that comes with letting it all hang out. Just thinking about it makes me long for the time when I could pull my dress over my head in front of everyone and not be judged. But, low and behold, after a little research, I discovered nudity can actually lead to improved emotional and physical health. Told you, Mrs. Lincoln, homeroom really should've been naked time.

There have been several studies on the benefits of sleeping naked, and yet according to a national survey, only 8 percent of Americans do it! This was hard for me to come to terms with because aside from the fact that the majority of our nation has no idea how fantastic sheets feel on bare skin, it can help you sleep better, lose weight and even improve your relationship. This got me thinking, if sleeping naked can enhance my life so significantly, what if I spent more time naked on a day-to-day basis? Could it possibly make a difference in just one week?

I spoke with Dr. Fran Walfish, Beverly Hills relationship psychotherapist, author of The Self-Aware Parent and co-star on WE TV's new show Sex Box, and she thought it was a great idea, as long as my boyfriend (who I live with) was willing to go along with it. She told me, "sleeping naked can be good for your health because it can reduce blood pressure. It can also be a wonderful antidote to stress and depression." Dr. Fran's done a bit of naked experimentation herself and said, "the more I walk around naked, the more I become more familiar, more comfortable, and the more things I can like about my body." All this made me that much more excited to try it out myself.

Thus, began my week-long naked study where anytime I was home, I'd lose all the clothes and carry on life like normal. Here's what transpired and what you'll learn if you try it, too.

1. You'll realize it's cold without clothes (but only for a bit)

My first day in the buff was definitely an adjustment. I had neglected to consider just how much colder it would be while spending the majority of my at-home time sans clothes. So, that situation needed to be rectified first. I turned the heat on high in every room and made myself into a human ball until it started to get warmer. Once that happened, I felt fabulous. I immediately connected to that naked kid inside — and she wanted to take up as much space as possible. I found myself spreading my body wide wherever I went, which was weird because I honestly thought I'd be a bit demur at first. Nope. Not this guy.

2. Cook bacon at your own risk

I work from home, and thus had plenty of time to explore this wondrous, newfound freedom. While there were lots of joys I experienced in the nude, there were also several... interesting challenges, one of which was cooking breakfast.

First of all, breakfast foods are known to spatter. And one is never so aware of that fact until one is without the protective barrier of clothing. Needless to say, I had to stand pretty far from the stove, which made flipping bacon tricky. Our kitchen also has a large window facing a school, and this was around the time when all the buses let off kids in the morning. I came up with some interesting dance moves to avoid being seen.

3. You'll understand couple bonding in a whole new way

Not surprisingly, my boyfriend (also my lovely and talented photographer) was thrilled that I was doing this experiment. He let me know this often by following me around wherever I went, and even joining the naked club himself. If I learned anything that day, it's that more nakedness is a big ol' check in the couple bonding column.

4. You'll put a metaphoric magnifying glass to your "imperfections"

I have to be honest, by the third day, I was getting a bit frustrated with being naked all the time. I'm pretty comfortable with my body, but soon little imperfections started to bug me, especially because I couldn't hide them behind a layer of clothing. I focused on dimples that never bothered me before, chicken pox scars I didn't even know I had and became obsessed with finding and removing errant dark hairs.

To combat these anxiety-producing feelings, I did what I always do: clean the apartment.

5. You'll feel freer than ever when cleaning

For some reason, doing this naked was very therapeutic for me. I felt like I had more range of motion, and catching my reflection in our glass shower and mirrors with just my rubber gloves on never failed to make me chuckle. I also became a bit of an exhibitionist while cleaning the windows. Really did not think that was an aspect of my personality, but there you have it. And FYI, cleaning the litter box naked isn't that gross.

6. Something will try to come between you and your naked time, but persevere

I had to leave the comfort (and warmth) of my apartment and head to New Jersey for "family time." At first, I had no idea how I was going to squeeze any naked time into that day because while they're pretty chill, I didn't think my parents would be comfortable with me traipsing around their house naked. But, thankfully, they ran out to do some errands, and I quickly disrobed to experience being naked there. Now, this was fun because I felt like I was breaking the rules, and there's nothing like being naughty when you're naked.

7. You'll exercise better and feel sexier

I had been pushing off exercising naked because I was nervous about feeling my wobbly bits more intensely than I do in clothes. But, man, do I wish I hadn't, because working out naked is awesome.

I felt stronger, less vulnerable and sexier than I had in a long time, and that feeling lasted the rest of the day, which apparently is no coincidence. According to Natasha Turner, author of The Hormone Diet, being naked actually can make you look sexier. When you're naked, your body temp drops, and "as your body temperature drops, growth hormone is released and works its regenerative magic." AKA, your cells regenerate faster and you look fresher.

8. You'll appreciate your birthday suit a lot more

I was legitimately sad when I reached the end of my experiment and had to return to a life of wearing clothes (how droll). But then I realized, I don't have to do that at all! I can do this whenever I want because I'm an adult, and I say every day can be naked day! By the end of the week, I was feeling so much more confident about my body. I think I may have even lost some weight because it didn't feel so good to be ridiculously full while naked.

All in all, nakedness is good. And I highly recommend it if you want to feel better about yourself, your relationship and your cleaning habits. However, if you decide to try prolonged naked time and you're going to cook bacon or trim your cat's nails, proceed with extreme caution.

Don't go on The Voice if you want to be famous admits Ricky Wilson

It's hard to believe we're almost at the semi-final stage of The Voice already. The acts have been whittled down to eight and all decisions are now in the hands of the public.

The coaches had one final say last Saturday with each of them choosing one of their remaining three acts to fast track to the semi-final.

Rita Ora backed Welsh teenager Karis Thomas, Tom Jones put through Sasha Simone and will.i.am gave opera singer Lucy O' Byrne the news she wanted to hear.

Ricky Wilson chose Scottish fireman Stevie McCrorie, who has definitely won the hearts of the British public, but does he have what it takes to hit the big time? Because the thing is, as brilliant as The Voice is, it's not got a great track record for creating superstars.

More: 12 Reasons The Voice is so much better than X Factor

The Kaiser Chiefs frontman admitted on Alan Carr: Chatty Man that the talent show has yet to launch a successful music career but suggested that fame isn't a priority for the hopefuls. "[The contestants] are not there to be famous, that's why they come on The Voice. Sorry, producers of The Voice!" he said.

Wilson went on to say that he is still in touch with every one of his acts from last year and that "they are doing much better but there is a sliding scale. Obviously they are not Beyoncé or Chris Martin but they are having a career in music."

Maybe this year will be the year of The Voice superstar.

Toddler miraculously 'fine' after 101 minutes of CPR

Gardell Martin

Gardell Martin

While playing outside with two of his brothers, the unthinkable happened: On March 11, Gardell Martin fell into a nearby stream on his family's five-acre property outside of Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania. Gardell was found a quarter-mile away a half hour later by a neighbor in a search party. The lifeless toddler was caught in a tree branch with icy water from the creek rushing all around him.

Thankfully, help was already on the way. An ambulance crew arrived within moments after Gardell was pulled from the 34-degree water. When the paramedics couldn't find a pulse, they started CPR and continued without interruption for a total of 101 minutes. CPR lasted through the ambulance ride, at the community hospital, on board a medical helicopter and into the Geisinger Janet Weis Children's Hospital's emergency room, where a pediatric ICU staff awaited his arrival.

According to Dr. Richard Lambert, Geisinger Pediatric Critical Care Physician, "He was dead."

Lambert explained, "He did not have a pulse, and he wasn't breathing on his own and he had no neurologic function. All of those things were being done for him... the CPR and the breathing that was being done through the E-T tube."

How did this child make a full recovery after being technically dead for an hour and 41 minutes? Was it a miracle? Was it science? Depending on who you ask, the answer may be a little bit of both.

Gardell's family prayed, and the doctors worked. Geisinger Director of Pediatric Intensive Care Dr. Frank Maffei said that, in this case, Gardell's dramatically low body temperature at 75 degrees, 25 degrees below normal, was actually a good thing. A lowered temperature put the toddler's body into a hypothermic-like state that gave him a second chance at life.

The medical team warmed Gardell's body as CPR continued, and his pulse returned at around 82 degrees. Though there is a medical explanation for the toddler's recovery, doctors say that this case is one for the record books. Dr. Maffei said that he had never seen a child in northern Pennsylvania survive without a pulse for this long before. As for Gardell, the boy was released from the hospital, and doctors believe he has made a full recovery.

For every negative and horrifying parenting story you hear in the news, there's at least one positive story to put in your back pocket. The next time you find yourself worrying about how you could possibly protect your child every second of the day, just remember Gardell. Some stories do have a happy ending.
