9 Signs your significant other is more like your roommate

$
0
0

Here are nine signs you're acting less like romantic partners and too much like plain ol' roommates.

1. You sleep in separate beds... all the time

Sleeping apart sometimes isn't a big deal. But if you sleep in separate beds and rooms every single night, you're acting more like roommates. While this alone probably won't make or break your relationship, if it's one of several ways you're not acting like a couple, it could be a red flag.

2. You rarely, if ever, have sex

Sex is part of what sets a romantic relationship apart from any other kind. It's what keeps two people connected and in love. Platonic roommates don't have sex. Neither do siblings (usually). Couples do. Or they should, anyway. If the sex has stopped, it's a bad omen. Get to the bottom of what's going on and try to fix it.

3. You spend a lot of time in separate rooms of the house

Do you frequently watch TV by yourself in the living room while he works on the computer in the office upstairs? Are you always in one room doing your own thing while he's off in another doing his? That's what roommates do, not couples. Though it's healthy to have some alone time even when you're paired off, if you're leading separate lives in your own house, that's not good.

4. You don't care enough to fight

If you've gotten to the point where you're so indifferent that you can't even be bothered to fight with your significant other, that's a sign you're acting too much like roommates. Roommates often brush problems under the rug and avoid confrontation to keep the peace. Couples need to argue to work out their issues and better understand each other. In a strange way, fighting (within reason) helps keep two people who are married or in a relationship connected.

5. You go to the bathroom, burp and do other unromantic things in front of each other

This might be a controversial one, as plenty of couples find it totally OK to do everything in front of each other. But it's important to draw the line somewhere. There need to be boundaries in the relationship. How unattractive is watching someone go to the bathroom or burp (or the other thing)? Exactly. Save the gross stuff for your brother or sister or keep it private. Spare your poor significant other the pleasure of seeing you in all your glory.

6. You don't have meaningful talks very often

If real conversation between the two of you has dwindled down to practically non-existent and you find yourself barely speaking, that doesn't sound like a healthy love relationship. It's what roommates who aren't all that close do sometimes.

7. You've stopped checking in during the day

Couples in good relationships check in with each other at least once or more during the day — whether it's to just see how everything is going, talk about plans for later or alert the other person about a late arrival home. Roommates and siblings don't feel the need for that kind of regular contact. So when it stops in your relationship, it could mean something's wrong.

8. You don't make each other a priority

If your relationship is constantly taking a back burner to your job, kids, parents and everything else in your life, you're not acting like you're part of a couple — you're treating him like a brother or a roommate. You need to refocus your energies on your relationship and put it back at the top of the list, not the bottom, or you're in danger of losing it completely.

9. You don't share big news with each other anymore

If the first person you feel like telling important news to isn't your significant other or spouse, that's a bad sign that you've crossed over into roommate territory. You both should want to share big life events with each other. If it's become a chore or an afterthought to do that, then something isn't right.

Demi Lovato hits a huge milestone, and we are psyched for her

She was so young, so famous and so addicted to cocaine that she couldn't go 30 minutes without it, Lovato said in an interview back in 2013. And as historically has been the case with so many child stars, she couldn't seem to keep up with the fame and the fast life, and it finally sent her to rehab back in 2010.

Since that time, the former Disney Channel star has been making up ground to getting control of her life. She has been open and honest with the public about her struggles and always candid about the path her life was and is currently on.

She said in that same 2013 interview, "I believed, wrongly, that my addictive behaviors were something that I was in charge of."

But now she is happily and humbly celebrating three amazing years of sobriety.

She took to Twitter to express her appreciation and support from her family, friends and fans.

And if that wasn't sweet enough, longtime boyfriend, Wilmer Valderrama, posted the sweetest tribute to her on his Instagram.

He said, "Today we lay another stone together… I am proud and honor[ed] to be front row to see the world you are about to change."

Lovato said during an interview with Fitness Magazine that were it not for the That '70s Show star she would have relapsed.

We are beyond thrilled for Lovato. She is a style icon with her edgy looks and awesome hair. She makes songs we love to sing out loud with the car windows down, and she has taken control of her life. We wish her all the love and happiness in the world and can't wait to see what else she has in store!

Clean & Clear's new teen model is a big step in the right direction

Clean & Clear

Clean & Clear made a bold move by naming 14-year-old transgender activist Jazz Jennings as the face of their "See The Real Me" ad campaign. #SeeTheRealMe is Clean & Clear's new social media buzz that focuses on personal coming-of-age stories. Who better to represent the campaign than Jazz, a young girl who has had to break through stereotypes, criticism and hate in order to express her true self?

Jazz was assigned male at birth but began to identify as female as early as 15 months old. By just 2 years old, Jazz could say that she was a girl. At the age of 5, Jazz was one of the youngest children to ever be diagnosed with gender dysphoria. Today, at age 14, Jazz is the co-author of the enlightening children's book I Am Jazz and was named one of Time's "25 Most Influential Teens of 2014." She even has a new TLC series about life as a transgender teen, All That Jazz.

In the Clean & Clear ad, Jazz explains, "I've always known who I am. I was a girl trapped in a boy's body. Growing up has been quite a struggle being transgender — especially in middle school ... Sometimes, I've even been called an 'it.'"

She continues, "This year I decided to make a change and put myself out there and make new friends. The real me is happy and proud to be who I am, and I'm just having fun being one of the girls."

Jazz Twitter

Jazz Twitter

I cannot express how wonderful it is to see this ad as a parent. I could have a transgender child, you could have a transgender child, and now these kids have an empowering role model to look up to as the face of a popular teen product line.

Jazz has made amazing strides as a teen in the LGBTQ community, and Clean & Clear deserves credit for making much of that possible. Jazz's identity is now mainstream, as it should be, but her message is much broader. As a teen who understands what it is like to feel rejected, her face provides a message of hope that all teens need to hear: The real you is good and valuable and worth sharing.

Meatless Monday: Lemony tempeh scaloppine with shallots

$

Serve a classic on a Meatless Monday: lemony tempeh scallopini with shallots is a delight

Scaloppine is a traditional Italian dish that typically calls for chicken or veal, but I thought tempeh would make a great Meatless Monday option for this lemony classic. The tempeh is cooked golden and crispy thanks to the breading, and the citrus in the sauce truly brightens the flavor of this dish.

You'll enjoy every forkful of lemony tempeh scallopini with shallots

Shallots are very flavorful and similar to onions, but with more of a mild taste. They add just the right touch to this recipe. Serve this dish with rice and a small salad for a well-rounded meal.

Lemony tempeh scaloppine with shallots recipe

Classic recipes often get left for a night out to dinner, but this dish is so easy to make at home. It makes a lovely meal for a special occasion or even as a weeknight meal to enjoy with the family.

Serves 4

Prep time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 12-15 minutes | Total time: 27-30 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 (8 ounce) package tempeh, cut into large triangles, then sliced in half lengthwise
  • 1/3 cup panko
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 small shallot, sliced thin
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon lemon pepper
  • 1/3 cup vegetable broth
  • 1/4 cup dry white wine
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • Zest from 1/2 a lemon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 3 teaspoons capers
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • Lemon slices, for garnish

Directions:

  1. To a shallow bowl, add the panko, salt and lemon pepper, and mix to combine. Set aside. To a separate shallow bowl, add the flour, and to another, the egg.
  2. Place the tempeh pieces near the bowls, along with a platter. One at a time, dip each piece of tempeh, first into the egg mixture (allow the excess to drip back into the bowl), then into the flour, then into the egg mixture again and finally into the panko mixture. Use your fingers to lightly press the panko mixture onto the tempeh, and then place on the platter. Set aside.
  3. Meanwhile, to a skillet over medium heat, add 1-1/2 tablespoons of olive oil. When the oil is hot, add the shallots, and cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Add the broth, white wine, lemon juice, lemon zest, salt and pepper to the skillet. Stir, and bring the mixture to a boil. Add the capers, then reduce the heat, and allow the mixture to cook for a minute or so.
  4. Remove from the heat, but keep it warm.
  5. To another skillet over medium-high heat, add the remaining 1-1/2 tablespoons of olive oil. When the oil is hot, add the breaded tempeh to the skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes on each side, or until golden.
  6. Serve the tempeh warm on individual plates. Spoon the liquid mixture over each piece of tempeh, and garnish with lemon slices.

Rescuing is the only ethical way to bring a new pet home

$
0
0

Soon after we lost him, our family made the decision to bring two new cats into our home: Pirate and Panda. Pirate is about 5 years old and is missing one eye; Panda is a kitten. Both were found outside, disheveled and nearly dead, and nursed back to life at our wonderful vet's office. If I hadn't come along when I did, maybe someone else would have taken them. Maybe. But adult animals have a lot of trouble being rescued, and Panda was only getting older. What's even more likely is that they would have become some of the many animals still living in shelters (or put down by shelters) because there are just simply not enough homes to go around.

According to the ASPCA, 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats. Of the dogs entering shelters, approximately 35 percent are adopted, 31 percent are euthanized and 26 percent are returned to their owners. Of the cats entering shelters, approximately 37 percent are adopted, 41 percent are euthanized and less than 5 percent are returned to their owners.

Anyone looking at those grim stats would have a hard time justifying buying an animal. Obviously, all animals need homes, but the truth is, if no one bought from breeders, breeders would simply cease to exist. And while there are many reputable breeders and not all breeders are puppy mills, the fact is, puppy mills do exist and pet stores sell sick puppies, and good animals lose out on homes because of it. It's terrible.

Very few things in life are black and white, but with pet adoption, there really is only one ethical way to bring a new pet home. Anyone who buys a pet may love it every bit as much as someone who adopts from a shelter, but he or she didn't save a life in the same way.

Now, obviously, we are not under any obligation to save the world. I eat meat and wear leather, and I do all kinds of things that would make vegans balk. But, even so, unless you are showing your pet, there is really no reason to have a purebred, other than wanting one.

So, instead of supporting organizations that bring more pets into the world, why not give a home to the many sheltered animals who need one?

Pirate is the most loving cat I have ever had. All of my four cats and my one dog have been rescues. But Pirate is the most appreciative. He knows exactly where he comes from, and he loves our home. I can't guarantee all animals will be as appreciative as this one (our kitten is pretty darn entitled, even for a shelter cat), but I can guarantee that knowing you saved a life in that way only makes the love that much richer.

Adopt pets. Don't buy them.

The Jinx's Robert Durst arrested during bizarre documentary filming

The Jinx, which aired in six episodes on HBO, chronicled the life (and deaths) of Robert Durst, as the show's subtitle said. But on Sunday night, in the very last moments of the very last episode, Durst, in a crazed and bizarre twist, seemed to have confessed to all the murders he was accused of and tried for. Now the millionaire finds himself, once again, in police custody.

More: 5 Facts about The Jinx that make it terrifying to watch

The night before the final episode aired, Durst was picked up by police in a New Orleans hotel, where he was staying under a false name.

During the show, Durst walked into a bathroom, apparently forgetting his microphone was on, and muttered, "What the hell did I do?" He then whispered, "I killed them all, of course."

D & G call IVF babies 'synthetic;' Elton John calls for boycott

Sir Elton has two sons, Zachary, four, and Elijah, two, with husband David Furnish, both born to the same surrogate mother.

During the interview Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, who were a couple for 23 years before they split up in 2005, spoke about the "traditional family" set up they support, declaring that they oppose "gay adoptions," "chemical offsprings" and a "rented uterus."

"Life has a natural flow," they said. "There are things that should not be changed."

Dolce went on to say that creating children "must be an act of love." "You are born to a mother and a father — or at least that's how it should be. I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Uteri [for] rent, semen chosen from a catalog." [sic]

Their comments have infuriated people all over the world and Elton John didn't take long to make his feelings about them public.

He posted a picture of the designer duo on his Instagram page yesterday with the caption: "How dare you refer to my beautiful children as 'synthetic.' And shame on you for wagging your judgemental little fingers at IVF — a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana"

The fuss doesn't seem to have bothered Gabbana, who responded with his own Instagram image of a mother embracing her children with the hashtags "#dgmamma" and "#dgfamily."

Gabbana also posted a picture of Elton John on his Instagram page and asked his fans, "Who wants to see him dressed in Dolce & Gabbana?"

Several celebrities have tweeted their support for Elton John and voiced their own concerns about Dolce and Gabbana's comments, even Victoria Beckham, who tends to stay out of social media feuds. She posted: "Sending love to Elton David Zachary Elijah & all the beautiful IVF babies x vb."

Ricky Martin, whose twin sons were carried by a surrogate mother, wrote: "Your voices are too powerful to be spreading too much hate. Wake up, it's 2015. Love yourself guys."

Entertainer John Barrowman tweeted: "I just read the article. @dolcegabbana sound IGNORANT and STUPID. I agree with @eltonjohndotcom #BoycottDolceGabbana"

And comedian Matt Lucas chipped in, "Just read Dolce and Gabbana's weird, bigoted comments about raising kids. Ugh, those guys are so creepy."

Courtney Love said: "Just round up all my Dolce & Gabbana pieces, I want to burn them. I'm just beyond words and emotions. Boycott senseless bigotry! #boycottD&G"

Gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell backed the boycott and voiced what so many of us have been thinking, telling The Guardian: "It's quite outrageous that two gay fashion designers who have relied on the gay community for much of their success are opposing gay equality."

Bizarrely in 2006 Gabbana revealed that he had asked a female friend to be a surrogate mother to his children but added, "I am opposed to the idea of a child growing up with two gay parents. A child needs a mother and a father. I could not imagine my childhood without my mother. I also believe that it is cruel to take a baby away from its mother."

Adorable lesbian couple hijack Ryan Gosling's SxSW panel with proposal (VIDEO)

More: 15 Videos of a young Ryan Gosling to make your inner 13-year-old swoon

Ryan Gosling is in Austin, Texas, this weekend promoting his directorial debut Lost River and, of course, even the SxSW hipsters aren't immune to his sweetness, charm and floppy blond hair. Or at least that's what we thought until his Lost River panel ended with a tearjerker proposal.

Gosling was joined on the stage by Christina Hendricks and Saoirse Ronan for a panel on his new film and he did a decent job of staying on topic. That was, of course, until the moderator opened up time for a Q&A. One female fan (and hopeless romantic) waited until most others had had their turns and Gosling's time was almost up before taking the microphone to ask a question. However, after complimenting Gosling on his film, she quickly found herself overcome with emotion. No, she wasn't swooning over Gosling. She was just head over heels for the gorgeous girlfriend at her side.

More: Did Beauty and the Beast offer Ryan Gosling the wrong role?

"I think your film was amazing and I'm going to kind of take away from it for a bit if I can and ask my girlfriend of 11 years if she'll marry me," stated the overwhelmed festivalgoer.

Gosling, in all his cuteness, seemed to swoon just as much as the crowd and quickly came to the aid of the woman asking for her girlfriend's hand. He even scurried to the edge of the stage and gave her his mic so the entire audience could hear her heartfelt proposal. Her long-term partner, of course, said yes... and apologized profusely to the talent watching from their spot on the stage.

We still can't believe there's a single person on Earth who isn't under Gosling's spell. It must be true love for these lovely ladies. We're in awe of their devotion... and a little jealous of the breadth of their love. Let's be real: We at SheKnows would definitely trade in our partners for even just a kiss from Gosling. Are we terrible people? Uh... probably.

What men and women really want when it comes to online dating

Dating website, eHarmony, recently surveyed more than 100,000 of its members to find out what people are attracted to when it comes to online dating.

According to them, there are certain hobbies and interests that both men and women are more attracted to when it comes to developing that first spark of attraction online.

So what do women look for when it comes to online dating? Well, I can tell you one thing, it's not dick pics.

The findings reveal women are more interested in politics than pictures of guys' penises. Write that one down, guys. Seriously, that's got to stop.

An interest in travel, health, exercise, food and theatre are also considered pretty sexy. Don't these people sound like a classy bunch?

Men, though, are more interested in things like personal growth, health, food, family and dancing.

"What really matters is genuine compatibility," says eHarmony dating and relationship expert, Melanie Schilling.

"While it's nice to have some hobbies in common, it's important to look beyond this and be true to yourself," she says. "Take the opportunity to highlight the activities you participate in that link to your highest values, the stuff that really matters to you."

The study also found that men who include more information in their profiles, including their interests and hobbies, receive 125 per cent more interest than other candidates who don't.

Traits most attractive to women:

  1. Political knowledge
  2. Travel
  3. Health/exercise
  4. Food
  5. Theatre
  6. Learning
  7. Photography
  8. Finding love

Is discrimination in the workplace keeping you from having another baby?

$
0
0

According to a report released by the Australian Human Rights Commission, one in two Australian women face discrimination in the workplace because of parenting and pregnancy obligations.

But something equally worrying seems to be emerging from the workplace, with more bullying complaints coming from women who are either expecting their second child or who already have two or more children.

Victorian equal opportunity and human rights commissioner, Kate Jenkins, says she has noticed a pattern emerging: Women returning to the workplace after their second child often face discrimination, bullying and being left out.

She says that while first-time mothers often return to their jobs, perhaps into part-time roles, it's when the second child comes that they are scrutinised about their level of commitment to both their roles at work and at home.

"You can't win either way," said Jenkins, according to news.com.au. "If you want to return part-time you get lesser work. If you want to return to full-time people question whether you are really a committed mother and none of these things happen to men who have children."

According to the Fair Work Australia Ombudsman, employees are entitled to their pre-parental leave position upon returning to work, and if that role is no longer available, another available position which they are qualified for must be made available.

And while regulations are in place to ensure equal opportunity for mums returning to the workplace and to curtail discriminatory behaviour, mothers have reportedly been left behind at work because of their family commitments.

"Meetings of importance were scheduled on the days I was not there and then I was harassed for not attending, even though my children had been sick," mum Marie told News Ltd.

"My loyalties were questioned and in the end I requested a voluntary redundancy and received it, because I had no intent of ever returning to that place."

The Australian Bureau of Statistics warned in their report on Pregnancy and Work Transitions that businesses who fail to find flexible work arrangements for women are missing out on their untapped potential. Because, while women's social situations may change, their work ethic and productivity isn't compromised as a result.

"Research has found that women employed in highly flexible roles are more productive than the rest of the working population," the report says. "Organisations that fail to provide flexible arrangements may be missing out on the opportunity to harness the skills, experience, and productivity of women who need to balance work and family responsibilities."

If you find yourself in a similar situation, be sure to take the following steps:

  • Keep a diary of the events happening at work.
  • Do some research and find out if your workplace has an anti-bullying policy.
  • Talk to someone if you need support, or contact support services or your union for further assistance.
  • Take the issue up with someone at work, either the HR department or the health and safety representative.
  • Make a formal complaint.

8 Reasons to marry a younger man and drop the 'cougar' stigma

$
0
0

Love isn't just blind; it's ageless (assuming that love is between two consenting adults. Um, always).

So then, why is it that men constantly marry women who are 10, 15, 20 years their junior, while we get called cougars or are told we're robbing the cradle when we dare date or settle down with a younger man?

People will talk no matter what. Never mind them — they're too focused on a number to see the bigger picture. Here are eight fantastic reasons why marrying a younger man you love is a great idea.

1. He has endless energy

A younger man will surprise you at 10 p.m. by suggesting you put on heels (heels — at 10 p.m.!) and hit up a restaurant and club. At first, you'll look at him like he's crazy and pull your Snuggie over your head. But then you'll get flashbacks of a time, not so long ago, when you didn't leave your house before 11. Those were some damn good times and your younger guy is more than happy to bring them back.

2. Pure fun

There's a certain kind of fun that I like to call Dumb Fun that can only be had when you're spending time with someone who isn't afraid of embracing his inner young and foolish. You'll play video games together, attend concerts held in grimy venues and eat nacho chips out of a bag while listening to music you've never heard before. Life will feel like an adventure.

3. Less baggage

Life experience transforms people from blank slates into canvases rich with color, shadows and highlights. But it also creates baggage. With a younger partner, you're less likely to inherit the past pain of several failed relationships or the complications that come with being in love with someone who has children and a not-so-nice ex-wife.

4. Your success may matter more

There's a fairly good chance, depending on how many years apart you are in age, that you will be the breadwinner in your relationship, at least until he catches up. This can be thrilling for many women, who feel successful and powerful in their marriage and enjoy the opportunity they have to serve as a mentor and role model to their spouse.

5. Your experience is sexy to him

Maybe you traveled extensively before you met. Read a lot of books. Raised a child on your own or closed on your house before you were 28. In some men's eyes, your life experiences are baggage, but in the minds of a lot of younger men, your experiences set you apart from women his age and make you incredibly interesting and sexy.

6. Sexual endurance and experimentation

Do we even have to add this one? The same boundless energy that drives younger men to stay up all night translates like a dream to the bedroom. Expect a younger partner to be willing to go to great lengths to please you and to last a long time.

7. They remind you to slow down

Younger men aren't always looking 30 years into the future; they're thinking about this weekend. While your younger spouse will benefit from your advice about why it isn't always good to live for the moment (you should also get on him pronto about contributing to his 401k!), think about the comfort you'll derive from being with a person who can teach you how to live in the moment and really appreciate the way that sip of wine tastes instead of thinking about calories and the gym time you'll have to put in tomorrow.

8. They're more optimistic

Younger folks, in general, are more apt to still believe that people can change and goals can be attained. At some point, we lose a bit of that hopefulness — and a great many of us are a lot less happy because of it. If you bring a few slices of pragmatism to the table and he brings a few slices of optimism, you’ll create a delicious cake.

African-American job applicant turned down because of braids: ignorant or racist?

$

South Londoner Simone, 25, applied through the Elite Associates agency for a job working at various department stores. She was surprised when the agency came back to her with a request: could she take her braids out? Apparently the companies they represent "go for a more natural look" to suit their "high end products."

But what could be more natural for African-American hair than braids?

The BBC spoke to the editor of Black Beauty and Hair, Irene Shelley, who expressed concern over the department stores' response to Simone's hair. "It's very different wearing a nose ring to wearing braids," Shelley said, when asked whether braids were simply an extreme look, like facial piercings or a mohican. [With a nose ring or a mohican] you're making a style statement. Afro hair is what grows out of your head. People are saying your hair texture isn't good enough, you have to do something about it before we take you on."

A few weeks ago, E!'s Fashion Police host Giuliana Rancic caused a major fuss when she made offensive comments about Zendaya Coleman's dreadlocks at the Oscars. In response Coleman posted a statement on her Instagram page, highlighting the "harsh criticism of African American hair in society" due to "ignorant people who choose to judge others on the curl of their hair."

Perhaps Elite Associates should circulate Coleman's statement among its clients to ensure that they think twice before rejecting an otherwise qualified job applicant because she wears her hair in braids. Whether they reacted to Simone's hair out of ignorance or racism, it's not good enough.

Elite Associates is investigating the matter and said diversity is "at the core of its business."

So far 3,433 people have signed the "Cancel Kanye West's headline slot and get a rock band" petition, which reads: "Kanye West is an insult to music fans all over the world. We spend hundreds of pounds to attend glasto, and by doing so, expect a certain level of entertainment. Kanye has been very outspoken on his views on music… he should listen to his own advice and pass his headline slot on to someone deserving! Lets prevent this musical injustice now!"

Somehow we don't think any petition will prevent this from happening. Brace yourselves for the June 2015 leg of the Kanye West/Kim Kardashian world takeover. Wonder if she'll wear wellies?

Peekaboo

You know how usually it's the adult who does the hiding and the peeking? Yeah, this toddler is way advanced. She's playing peekaboo with her mom and dad and not the other way around — let's be clear about that.

And, to add insult to injury, this toddler is multitasking! Not only is she playing peekaboo with maximum dexterity (amazing wrist-flip action when she takes the bucket off her head), but she's playing with that little gray accessory of hers at the same time. Based solely on this video, we can tell that this toddler is destined for great things — you heard it here first.

Born in the Wild stars on why they gave birth outdoors

$

There are a few things two of the show's stars, Amy Hammond, and her husband, Jeff, want people to know right off the bat.

 1. Yes, they did have their baby in the middle of nowhere.

 2. No, they didn't get paid for it or do it to "get famous."

 3. And they would do it again in a heartbeat (except maybe on the beach next time).

Amy and Jeff were one of six families featured on the show in which women literally give birth, well, in the wild.

And, I have to admit, the cheesy trailers left me feeling like the show was nothing more than a gimmick. I mean, who were these hippies who wanted to give birth in a forest and allow someone to tape it? Were they doing it for the money? For fame? Then I met the Hammonds.

Sweet and steadfast in their faith, the Hammonds say the experience has been bittersweet, saying they enjoyed their "reality TV stardom" (when you have a camera crew following you into the gas station, it's kind of hard not to feel like a Kardashian), but were shocked by some of the backlash they've gotten.

"It's stressful thinking about what you want to show and, obviously, by the comments (online), there is a lot of negativity toward us, like we are dumb for doing what we do," says Jeff.

Amy added, "I would hope that people would realize that this is not just for hippies. It's educated, middle-class, upper-class families that are choosing to do this. We did a lot of research on this and it's not something that we've taken lightly; we didn't just wake up one day and say, 'You know what, I'm just gonna pop one out in the woods.' It's something that we put a lot of thought into."

The couple even started a Facebook page to help educate the public on their decision.

Turns out, the couple had already decided they wanted to have the baby outside before they'd ever heard of the show. And when Amy saw a casting call for it, it was a perfect fit.

More: Born on the Wild takes natural childbirth to the extreme

"I had wanted to have a baby outdoors for a while and I'm a pretty quiet birther, so I thought I could so easily be in my own backyard, but I wanted to take it one step further," Amy said.

Born in the Wild

Of the couple's nine children, only one was born in a hospital. So, for Amy, having a baby in the wild was a logical next step.

But her husband had just one stipulation — the midwife had to be there.

"He doesn't like to catch," Amy said, laughing.

And although the TV audience will see much of the process condensed from about two hours to 20 minutes, Amy said the entire birth was relaxing.

More: 10 Birth show ideas inspired by outdoor childbirth reality TV

"It was a very quick labor, very quiet. You can hear the elks bugling in the distance. It's all very surreal."

The baby, now 6 months old, was fittingly named Levi Silas — Silas means "man of the woods." A fitting name indeed.

Born in the Wild airs Thursdays at 4 p.m. Would you give birth in the wild? What do you think about the concept?

10 Rules to eating healthy when none of your friends do

$
0
0

Here's the thing. I am borderline obsessed with clean eating, exercise and supplements because I love how they make me feel and how easy it has been to lose post-baby weight. But, just like any other fundamental religion, I know by now that most people don't want to hear it — especially when they are about to bite into a nice, juicy burger.

If you are a fellow health fanatic, here are 10 ways to live clean without turning everyone against you:

1. Follow the rules of Fight Club

Fight Club

Image: Giphy

The first rule of clean eating is: You do not talk about clean eating. No matter what unholy, processed pile of crap your friend puts in her mouth, you keep your trap shut.

2. Do not talk about kale

Kale

Image: Giphy

This will give you away immediately. I love kale so much that I drink three green smoothies a day, but do you think anyone in my life wants to hear about it? Kale screams superiority. Keep this "clean" little secret to yourself.

3. Do not talk about what's "in that"

Gag

Image: Giphy

"Do you know what's in that?" Most people are well aware that hot dogs are made of chicken lips and pig buttholes, but they eat 'em anyway because it makes them happy. Pick your battles.

4. Do not "like" the Cooking Quinoa Facebook page

Supernatural

Image: Giphy

Don't you know that all of your friends see your Facebook activity? Cooking Quinoa already has over 100,000 likes. They will survive without you.

5. Do not humble brag on social media

Guns

Image: Giphy

Here's the perfect litmus test: If your post includes #cleaneating, you've gone too far.

6. Do not invite your friends to a juicing seminar

Witchcraft

Image: Giphy

This is the equivalent of inviting a friend of a different religion to your church on Sunday — again and again and again. Clean eating evangelism is not a good look.

7. Refrain from taking pictures of your food

Stop

Image: Giphy

This is a tempting one, since everyone and their mom snaps shots of what's for dinner. But, line up your tofu kelp salad next to your bestie's Hamburger Helper on Instagram and you have essentially gifted her a cloak of shame.

8. Be open minded about where you eat

Laugh

Image: Giphy

Your friends are going to straight up murder you if you make them eat at a vegan restaurant again. Eat before you go out, check nutrition facts online or plan a cheat meal once a week. Everybody wins.

9. Wipe that smug smile off your face

Smug

Image: Giphy

Clean eating makes me feel smug too — I get it. Practice using a normal facial expression when nibbling on gluten-free pizza or get used to eating lunch alone.

10. Join a support group

Kitty

Image: Giphy

By now, you are saying: "But, surely there is a time and a place to talk about clean eating? If I can't share my secret healthy lifestyle with my loved ones, then who can I talk to?" The answer is — the internet. There are literally thousands of forums on clean living, health, bodybuilding, you name it. Join one and pester people who really care.

Make a chili cheddar panini with your leftovers for dinner tonight

$
0
0

So, with that in mind, leftover chili got a makeover. A messy, cheesy, comfort food decadence kind of makeover. But I can assure you, every bite and all the napkins you'll need while eating this are worth it. Because thick buttered bread makes everything better, even chili.

Chili cheddar panini recipe

Chili leftovers are sandwiched between bread with lots of melted, gooey cheese. Comfort food in panini form!

Serves 1

Prep time: 5 minutes | Cook time: 5 minutes | Total time: 10 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices thick bread
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/4 cup warm leftover chili
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella
  • 1 green onion, chopped

Directions:

  1. Preheat a panini maker or griddle.
  2. Spread butter on the outside of both slices of bread.
  3. Lay 2 slices of cheddar on the opposite side of each piece of bread.
  4. Spread mozzarella on top of the cheddar.
  5. Place the bottom slice of bread buttered side down onto the panini maker.
  6. Spoon the chili on top of the cheese, sprinkle green onions on top, and carefully place the other slice of bread on top.
  7. Press down on the panini maker (or cook for 2 minutes on 1 side, and carefully flip the sandwich if using a pan or griddle), and cook for 3 minutes, until the cheese has melted and the bread is toasted.
