Sweet and savory popovers are an irresistible brunch dish

$
0
0

Here's the thing about popovers: They're a little finicky. You absolutely cannot open the oven while they're baking (something I did about 10 times as I was warming up other side dishes for our Thanksgiving spread), and you really have to preheat the tin, whether it's a muffin tin or a legitimate popover tin. Nothing crazy, but breaking either of these rules will result in a deflated, mushy mess, not a light, puffy, doughy inside, crispy outside piece of baked good perfection like they should be.

These popovers are a great balance of savory and sweet. With thyme and goat cheese in the popovers and a sweet mixed berry sauce to serve with them, they're an absolutely irresistible bite and worth the extra effort.

Goat cheese and thyme popovers with mixed berry sauce recipe

Puffy, crisp, doughy and savory popovers are served with a sweet mixed berry sauce, making them great for any time of day.

Yields 9

Prep time: 10 minutes | Bake time: 27 minutes | Total time: 37 minutes

Ingredients:

For the popovers

  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 ounce goat cheese
  • Butter or coconut oil, for greasing

For the mixed berry sauce

  • 1 cup mixed berries (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries)
  • 1/2 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon water

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.
  2. To a blender, add the milk, eggs and butter. Blend for 30 seconds on high until well blended.
  3. Add the flour, salt and thyme to the blender, and blend again on high for about 1 minute, until well blended and bubbly.
  4. Place a muffin tin in the oven for 2 minutes to heat.
  5. Remove the muffin tin, and grease 9 cups with a generous amount of butter or coconut oil. Make sure to grease up the sides of each cup as well. Using a paper towel to do this is easiest, since the muffin tin will be hot.
  6. Turn the blender on for 10 seconds just to blend the mixture again.
  7. Pour the batter into each muffin cup about halfway up.
  8. Add the goat cheese crumbles to the middle of each cup. Pour the remaining batter on top of each cup to cover the goat cheese.
  9. Place the muffin tin in the oven, and bake for 15 minutes. Lower temperature to 350 degrees F, and bake for another 12 minutes. Do not open the oven at all during baking time, or the popovers will deflate.
  10. While the popovers bake, make the berry sauce by adding the butter to a small saucepot over medium heat. Once the butter has melted, add the berries, and simmer over medium, stirring occasionally until the berries are broken down. In a small bowl, mix together the cornstarch and water, add the mixture to the saucepot, and stir. Remove from the heat, and set aside.
  11. Remove the popovers from the oven, and let them cool for 2 to 3 minutes in the tin. Remove the popovers from the tin, and place them on a cooling rack.
  12. Serve the popovers warm with the mixed berry sauce.

Slow Cooker Sunday: Beer-braised beef tacos for an easy dinner tonight

Get your hands on these slow cooker Sunday beer-braised beef tacos

What goes better together than tacos and beer? For this recipe, I've used the two ingredients to complement each other in the cooking process. The result is a flavorful taco that is fun to enjoy with a group. Serve these tacos with sides like salsa, shredded cheese and, of course, your favorite beer.

So many flavors and colors with these slow cooker Sunday beer-braised beef tacos!

I added orange juice and zest to the beef as it cooked (and a little more juice at the end) to give it a bit of bright, citrus flavor. When the beef has finished cooking, you simply shred it using two forks. It will fall apart nicely, and it makes a fab filling for tacos.

Slow cooker beer-braised beef tacos recipe

This recipe for beer-braised tacos is easy to make, and it yields big flavor. For more color and flourish for your tacos, consider adding radishes, black beans, shredded cabbage, bell pepper or Cotija cheese as toppings.

Serves 10-12

Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 8-10 hours, plus 5 minutes | Total time: 8-10 hours 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds top round roast, cut in half
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  • Salt and ground black pepper, to season the beef
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 (12 ounce) bottles dark beer
  • Juice and zest from 1 orange (reserve about 1/4 of juice to add just prior to serving)
  • 3/4 teaspoon dried cumin
  • 3/4 teaspoon dried coriander
  • 3/4 teaspoon dried ancho chile pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 6-inch tortillas
  • Toppings like diced onion, bell peppers, avocado, sliced radishes, sour cream, salsa and shredded cheese

Directions:

  1. Set the slow cooker to low heat. Season the beef with salt and pepper. Add 1 tablespoon of oil to a large skillet, and when it's hot, add the beef, and brown it on all sides. Transfer the beef to the slow cooker.
  2. Add the remaining oil to the skillet, and add the onions. Cook for a few minutes, then add the garlic. Cook the garlic for about 30 seconds.
  3. Add the beer, orange juice and zest, cumin, coriander, ancho chile pepper, salt and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil, scraping the bottom as it cooks.
  4. After a few minutes, pour the mixture into the slow cooker over the beef.
  5. Cover, and cook on low heat for 8 to 10 hours, until the beef is tender. Just prior to removing the beef from the slow cooker, add the remaining orange juice, and allow it to cook for another 5 minutes or so.
  6. Remove the beef, and use a fork to shred it into pieces.
  7. Serve the beef in the tortillas with your favorite toppings.

19 Kids and Counting's Amy Duggar reportedly getting reality show

In an interview with Radar Online, Duggar said she'd be willing to take part in a spin-off show, but only if the producers and network met a couple of conditions.

More: Jessa Duggar's doing her to best to save your sinning soul

"If they film my real life in Fayetteville with my boyfriend, yeah, we would do that," Duggar said, referring to her boyfriend of three months, Dillon King. "If they wanted to, we would!"

Duggar has appeared on the hit TLC series featuring her aunt and uncle, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, and their family of 19 children. Jim Bob and Michelle are well known for their conservative Christian beliefs, but Amy has always marched to the beat of her own drum.

While Jim Bob and Michelle's kids dress conservatively and have strict rules for dating that include no kissing or even hugging (side-hugs only!) until the wedding night, Duggar believes that you can still be a Christian without conforming to those kinds of beliefs. Recently, she posted a picture of herself kissing her boyfriend, which evidently didn't go over well with her uncle.

"It would be a very different type of show," Duggar said of any reality TV show based on her life.

In addition to appearing on 19 Kids and Counting, Duggar has also appeared in two specials of her own. The episodes spotlighted her blooming career as a country artist, but she was quick to point out that singing is what she loves to do, cameras or no cameras.

"With the two specials that I did, it shows that I can sing. It doesn't show I can hold a note, though," she said. "I want to get that across. I want people to know that I'm not doing it for fame or the Duggar name. I love to sing. If the cameras follow me, cool. If not, cool!"

What parents need to know about their teens being lured to ISIS

$

Even amid the risk of rape, beheadings and death, young Australian women are reportedly being lured to war-torn Syria to potentially bag a bad-boy jihadist.

They're the claims of deputy commissioner of intelligence and counterterrorism for the NYPD, John Miller, who suggests ISIS founder, Omar al-Baghdadi, lures Western women by promising a jihadist husband or partner.

The Institute of Strategic Dialogue says approximately 550 Western women have so far packed their bags and made their way to Syria in support of ISIS, potentially in search of a man to call their own.

The foreign minister, Julie Bishop, says up to 40 Australian women have become jihadi brides and are fighting alongside ISIS in Iraq and Syria or are even supporting them from here.

"More women are either joining their foreign fighter husbands or apparently seeking to find partners, the so-called jihadi brides are otherwise providing support for terrorist organisations," Ms. Bishop said.

CCTV footage of three young girls has been released of three girls who fled England for Syria to become jihadi brides. They were just 15 and 16 years old.

But while the biggest numbers come out of the U.S. and the U.K., Australian women are also packing their bags. In December of last year, a 19-year-old and a 20-year-old were reportedly the first Australian women to board a plane for Syria to become jihadi brides themselves.

"They are seemingly young Australians who think they are going off on an adventure — well, they're not. They're joining terrorist organisations that are carrying out shockingly brutal attacks," Bishop said of the situation at the time.

It's a scary thought just imagining what these young girls are doing. But these are conversations worth having. Here are just some ideas of how to see the signs and stop young girls from being lured by the idea of becoming jihadi brides.

  • Talk about healthy relationships — what they are and aren't — and gauge how they feel about what they want from their own relationships.
  • Ask for support and guidance from local leaders in the community who mirror your own ideals and values.
  • Be aware of how and when they are using social media, who are they talking to and what their body language and attitude is like after using social media.
  • Engage in a dialogue about current issues to better understand their personal beliefs and opinions.

ARIES (March 20-April 19)

Venus is the planet of attraction in astrology. When she’s traveling through your zodiac sign (like she is now), then you’ll see your approval ratings rise. Venus makes you magnetic, appealing and absolutely irresistible. However, you also want to be careful because you can become someone that men fight over. It sounds flattering, but things could get ugly on March 4 when Uranus and Pluto are thrown into the mix. It will be up to you to manage their testosterone levels. And if that means hosing down the guys to break up the dogfight — then so be it.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

It appears as if you’re hell-bent on sabotaging yourself at every turn. It’s to be expected when Venus is traveling through that part of your solar chart that pertains to self-undoing. Simply put, you feel like a caged animal and you’re doing everything in your power to break out. Maybe it’s a joyless marriage, an unrequited love match or a friendship with benefits that stopped being mutually beneficial a long time ago. In any case, you want to be free. It won’t be easy and it won’t be nice but you will get your life back by March 16.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

On March 3 your partner will finally get that big break he’s been working for thanks to a propitious Jupiter/Uranus trine. It’s great news as he’ll feel like he’s back in the saddle again. However, part of you may worry that he won’t need you in the way he used to. It’s a perfectly natural feeling and it often happens when couples experience a dramatic shift in the balance of their relationship. In any case there’s nothing to fret about. Success won’t spoil your boo. If anything he’ll rely on you even more for advice, support and encouragement.

You’ve moved around appointments to accommodate his schedule, talked him through his insecurities and even put up with an underwhelming love life because you knew that his mind was on other things. Unfortunately it’s made him even more self-absorbed. On March 4, Venus conjoins Uranus and squares Pluto. This is when you’ll let him have it — and in no uncertain terms. Afterwards you’ll want to patch things up and make nice, but don’t. Leave him alone to stew in his own juices. He needs to understand just how good he’s got it.

It’s amazing how quickly things click into place when you’re with the right person. You can’t keep your hands off each other, you get each other’s humor, and most importantly you share the same values. It feels like you’ve just met yet have known each other forever. This is the beautiful gift that the Jupiter/Uranus trine on March 3 brings. Friends will point out that you’ve said these things before and so what if you did? What’s important is that you’ve found your mate and given the alignment of the planets, it’s truly a match made in heaven.

As a Virgo, you’ve spent years in love with the wrong men or the right men, but at the wrong time. Thankfully the sun/Pluto sextile on March 5 shows that everything is coming together splendidly and that there’s nothing to fear. You’ve done your time in the trenches, healed your emotional wounds, and now you deserve to experience one of the rarest things of all — a healthy relationship.

#AbbottsolutelyHopeless: The anti-Abbott poster goes viral

It was an image of leadership, new direction and strength during Barack Obama's presidential campaign in 2008, but the iconic blue and red pop imagery has been pumped with new meaning.

Graphic designer, Michael Agzarian, has put his money where his mouth is and has spent more than $3,000 of his own cash to create and erect an image of Tony Abbott, paying homage to Shepard Fairey's Obama poster, on the streets of Sydney.

The image is of Tony Abbott, with the word "Hopeless" beneath it instead of "Hope", which the original Obama poster featured.

The idea sprang forth from Agzarian's Wagga Wagga studio, from which he created the website, Abbottsolutelynot.com, revealing to BuzzFeed that he finds Prime Minister Tony Abbott "aloof and out of touch."

"Our poster depicts the grim situation Australia finds itself in with Tony Abbott as Prime Minister leading an equally inept and uncaring ministry," the AbbottsolutelyNot website says. "We want more posters up around Sydney and other major cities like Canberra and Melbourne."

Here's how the public has reacted to the posters so far:

Passion is a wonderful thing, and you should never apologize for it. The fact that you get more excited than most, that you’re the first to sign on for a cause or campaign and that you won’t take cynicism for an answer are the very qualities that make you so attractive and appealing. Secrets and Lies: Ben isn't guilty, he's being crucified

$

More: 96 New TV shows in 2014-2015: Watch all the shows!

Whether it set out to do so or not is unclear, but Secrets and Lies certainly sheds light on the dangers of trial by media, tunnel-visioned police investigations and how these two things are turning the "innocent until proven guilty" principle on its head.

The show's pilot episode opens with Ben Crawford (Ryan Phillippe) having found the body of 6-year-old Tom. Ben's neighbors — all of whom are his friends — are immediately sorrowful for him because he was the one who made the gruesome discovery, and all the media wants is to interview the poor guy who found a dead child. All of those sentiments last for what seems like less than 24 hours. For all we know, Ben may very well be guilty, but isn't he meant to be treated as innocent until proven guilty?

Right from the get-go, the lead detective on the case, Andrea Cornell (Juliette Lewis), seems to doubt Ben's innocence. For reasons that aren't exactly crystal clear, she zeroes in on him. She treats him as a suspect immediately, appearing desperate to catch him in a lie and using seemingly benign holes and confusion in Ben's story as a reason to suspect him of murder. The only evidence she seems to have — Ben's missing flashlight and the fact that DNA testing shows he's the boy's father — is circumstantial and doesn't prove a thing. Yet she's hellbent on the idea that Ben is guilty.

More: 15 Celebrity divorce stories that totally break our hearts

As soon as it becomes apparent to the media that Ben might be a suspect (not to be confused with actual confirmation from the police that Ben actually is a suspect — confirmation the police never gave to the media), there's no holding back. All of the reporting skews toward the idea that mere suspicion of Ben is absolute proof that he is guilty.

His neighbors, who were at one time his friends, casual acquaintances and even people he's never met, certainly take the suspicion as an indication of guilt. Ben seems to immediately become shunned by his community — an unknown person paints "child killer" on his gate, his daughter becomes the victim of online abuse and he loses all of the work he had lined up. Only his family and his best friend entertain the idea that Ben is innocent. And this is all before any charges have been laid or a trial in court has taken place.

If there's one thing I know from the amount of crime shows I've watched, it's that a cloud of suspicion hanging over you will inevitably make you do things that only make you look more suspicious in an effort to rid yourself of the cloud of suspicion. Basically, once you are suspected of something, you'll always be met with suspicion by other people, regardless of whether or not you are ultimately acquitted. Once you've been labeled as something, shaking that label is an uphill battle.

I realize this isn't the best example, but O.J. Simpson was acquitted of murder, and I have yet to meet one person who has taken that acquittal to mean he isn't a murderer. If you're looking for a more lowbrow example, perhaps you could reach out to Katherine Heigl and ask if the general perception of her is still that she's difficult to work with.

More: 16 Hollywood dads who are uncomfortably attractive

Personally, when I think about the combined damage a tunnel-visioned police investigation and irresponsible reporting by media outlets can do, the first person who comes to mind is Amanda Knox. She was convicted in Italy of the murder of her roommate, Meredith Kercher, had that conviction overturned and then was once again found guilty in a retrial. Putting aside some of the most concerning aspects of Italy's justice system, Knox stands as a potent example of what happens when police zero in on evidence that can easily be explained and use it to imply guilt.

Also of concern is how the media never once genuinely questioned the reliability of the evidence, failing on multiple occasions to report that Knox's DNA was nowhere to be found in the room where Kercher was killed or that the police mishandled the collection of evidence, resulting in its contamination. Putting aside for a moment the question of how Knox was ever convicted in the first place, let alone twice, let's instead ask why the media's reporting was so intensely skewed toward the presumption of guilt. Why, during Knox's initial trial, were her hygiene habits and sexual history exploited by the media, instead of the focus of their reporting being the lack of DNA evidence against her? And when she was acquitted, I never saw a single interview with Knox that didn't require her to once again defend herself against the suggestion that she was a cold-blooded killer.

Knox's predicament, while different in terms of detail, does echo a lot of what took place in the Secrets and Lies premiere as well as what we can only predict will happen in future episodes. The biggest takeaway here is that criminal investigations that lack any sort of peripheral vision are incredibly dangerous, but they are even more diabolical when coupled with the media's almost-inevitable biased coverage of such investigations.

So, while the more obvious question to contemplate after the Secrets and Lies premiere is whether or not Ben did, in fact, kill Tom (and if he didn't, who did?), I'm way more concerned about whether our culture's determination to uphold the law and see justice done has meant we have completely abandoned one of the law's founding principles. Have we really become a society that requires defendants to prove themselves innocent rather than one that requires proof of guilt? And at what point will the general public begin to question media reporting and demand better than simply being spoon-fed a narrative without appropriate proof of its truth?

What did you think of the Secrets and Lies premiere? Let us know in the comments!

Alana Jones Tinder

Yesterday, 24-year-old Alana Jones appeared in a Brisbane court on charges of assault and possession of a dangerous drug following a first date with a 30-year-old she met through Tinder turned sour. Jones' date was taken to hospital in a stable condition and she was given bail on the condition she doesn't use Tinder or Facebook to meet people.

Falling from a Gold Coast apartment building

Twenty-eight-year-old Gable Tostee is behind bars after being charged with the murder of 26-year-old Warriena Wright in August last year when she fell from the 14th floor of a Gold Coast apartment building. The pair met through Tinder, but he claims he's innocent.

Rape and abductions

In October last year, a 28-year-old New Zealander in Sydney on business was allegedly gang-raped after meeting up with a man at a Kings Cross restaurant.

In the U.S., a 30-year-old man from Georgia was assaulted and had his car stolen by someone he met via the popular app. In July in Louisiana, a man was arrested for raping a woman he had met through the dating app.

In Dublin, Ireland, a woman was abducted and raped in September after meeting up with a man she'd met via the app.

In New Zealand, media outlets are reporting that police are investigating several rape complaints from women who met guys through Tinder.

And these are just a fraction of the Tinder-related crimes that have been reported.

How popular is Tinder?

Tinder app

Tinder app

The hottest dating app, Tinder claims to make 1 million new matches every day and, with over 10 million users worldwide, it seems to be the new, innovative way to hook up. For the happily matched who haven't ventured into the world of Tinder, the app allows you to flick through profile pictures of registered users, which can be filtered to those in your immediate area. You swipe right if you're interested, left if you're not, and if your swipes match, then you can start chatting straightaway.

Is Tinder safe?

Tinder app 2

Tinder app 2

Asking if Tinder is safe is like asking if swimming with sharks is safe? Yes, it's safe as long as you take precautions, but even if you follow the advice of experts, there are no guarantees you won't get eaten alive.
Keep in mind that there are other ways to meet the potential love of your life without the use of an electronic device.

How to stay safe on Tinder

Don't use provocative profile pictures

Posing in your bikini or showing off your cleavage will attract the wrong sort of men.

If they look too hot to be true, they probably are

Beware of profiles with photos that are so hot they take your breath away. These are likely to be profiles set up by scammers. If you suspect a profile is a fake, take a screenshot and drop it into a Google Image search to see if there are duplicates online. You need to be realistic; if a bloke has washboard abs and is ridiculously good-looking, it's unlikely he's going to need Tinder to find a date.

Run a background check

Make sure they are who they say they are before agreeing to meet up by doing a background check. This should turn up any previous criminal records and records of marriage and divorces.

Meet in a public place and take a friend with you

If you're meeting up with someone you've met online, take a friend with you and make sure you meet in a very public place or politely decline if they ask you to go somewhere private, like a park or their apartment. Even if you go with a friend, make sure another family member knows when to expect you home. It may seem a little over the top, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Don't leave drinks unattended

Buy your own drink, and if you must excuse yourself to go to the bathroom, make sure you take your drink with you.

This married couple has never had sex, proving sex isn't everything

In an article published in the Courier Mail over the weekend, Michaela and James Reece revealed how for nine years, since they married, they haven't been able to have sex because of a painful condition Michaela has called vaginismus.

The rare disorder, which Michaela now suffers after contracting an infection, causes the vaginal muscles to tighten, resulting in extreme pain during sex.

The Brisbane couple, who waited to have sex with each other until they were married, were mortified to learn they weren't able to have sex without Michaela experiencing unbearable pain. The pair has since created a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for treatment in New York.

"Jimmy made a decision at the age of 14 that he would wait for his wedding night to have sex with his wife," they wrote on GoFundMe. "We met, fell madly in love and dated and waited for 21 months before we got married. Imagine our heartbreak when sex was excruciatingly painful — to the point of impossible — and ended up in infection," they wrote.

The couple, after years of not knowing what was wrong, finally received news from a specialist that it was the uncommon vaganismus disorder. Now that it has a name, though, they have hope of finding a cure.

"Every birthday, every anniversary, every new year that goes by means I still can't be with my husband properly and it's torture," the couple said.

"Our 10 year anniversary is coming up in December this year. It'd be lovely if THIS was the year that we could be together in 'that way' for the first time."

While it's devastating for a couple to learn that they cannot engage in the intimate act of penetrative sex with each other, there are other ways couples can enjoy pleasurable intimacy in their relationships.

  • Talking: Engaging in open discussion with your partner can be an incredibly intimate activity, especially as we use technology more and more to communicate. Look your partner in the eye when you talk to them, turn off the television and the smartphones and just be in the moment, paying attention to each other.
  • Touching: Simply running each other's hands and fingers over your bodies will have you breathing heavily and realising the connection between you is alive. Take note of your partner's body and allow them to do the same with yours.
  • Kissing: Kissing is said to be such a powerful form of intimacy that some even claim that orgasm can be reached just through heavy pashing alone.
  • Outercourse: Being sexual beings, pleasuring ourselves and our partners is a primal urge and can be explored without penetrative sex. With heavy petting, physical intimacy and other forms of stimulation, intimacy can be shared together.

Some celebrities are much better Twitter value than others. The Harry Potter novelist is one of the few who actually takes the time to read (and often reply) to her fans' messages. Follower Andrea Brutto caught her attention over the weekend, when he replied to Rowling's tweet ahead of the Scotland vs. Italy Six Nations clash at Edinburgh's Murrayfield stadium on Saturday.

7 Yoga poses for when you're too tired to workout

Yoga poses for when you're too tired to workout

Sometimes less is more. Case in point: Here are some simple, yet effective, yoga poses, which help keep you in shape even when you're not in the mood for a killer workout.

Sounds almost too good to be true, right? Thankfully, it's not. In fact, yoga is known to improve overall fitness, promote weight loss, relieve stress, increase energy and flexibility, improve immunity and better intuition and relationships, among many other things. And you don't even need to engage in vigorous forms of yoga to reap these benefits. Not too shabby for some simple stretching if you ask me.

All it really takes is around 15-30 minutes of yoga daily, or an hour-long practice a few times per week, to notice changes in your mind, body and spirit.

A consistent yoga practice changes your mind and shifts the way you approach your life, your body and your eating habits — thus resulting in weight loss and an overall healthier mentality. Yoga teaches you to appreciate your body and fill it with the best fuel and nutrients possible.

And another perk: You always have the option to tailor your yoga practice to suit your mood on any given day, which is especially handy when you're too tired to workout. So if you're looking to stretch it, but not strain it, try giving these yoga poses, in order, a go and repeat as many times as you want.

1. Downward-Facing Dog

Downward-facing dog

Pose benefits: Stretches the shoulders, hamstrings, calves, arches of the feet and hands, as well as strengthens and tones the arms and legs.

From Mountain pose (standing position), reach your hands down to the floor, bending your knees if need be. Walk your hands out about three to four feet in front of your toes. Pushing into your palms, lift your hips up toward the sky and press back into your heels, trying to get them flat to the ground. Keep your gaze toward your legs and continue pressing your chest toward your thighs to create a nice flat back.

2. Warrior II

Warrior 2

Pose benefits: Strengthens the legs and opens the hips.

From Downward-Facing Dog, step your right foot through and place it in between your hands at the top of your mat, aligning your front heel with the inside of your back foot (front toes should be facing the front of the room, while the back foot is parallel with your yoga mat, toes facing the side). Keeping a deep bend in the front knee and making sure the knee is directly in line with your ankle, cartwheel your arms up as you raise your chest off your thigh, reaching your arms in opposite directions. Hips face the side of the room, while your gaze remains over your right shoulder, toward the front of the room. Repeat on opposite leg.

3. Tree pose

Tree pose

Pose benefits: Strengthens the thighs, calves, ankles and spine, while also stretching the groin, inner thighs, chest and shoulders.

Starting off in Mountain pose, clasp your hands around your right knee and bring it in toward your chest. From here, grab a hold of your right ankle and rest the inside of your foot along the inside of your supporting leg, either up above the knee on the thigh, or down below the knee along your calf. Bring your hands to a prayer position at your heart or raise them up towards the sky, creating branches with your arms. Hold for four to eight breaths.

Note: Make sure to avoid resting your foot directly on your kneecap as this can lead to injuries.

For an extra challenge, grab a hold of your big toe with your middle and index fingers and extend your leg out to the side, straightening it as much as possible. Keep your supporting leg straight and extend your opposite arm out to the side. You can also twist the direction of this pose by taking the extended leg across your body towards the opposite direction and switching the grip of your foot with your hands.

4. Plank/Chaturanga

Plank/Chatturanga

Pose benefits: Plank pose increases the tone of your deltoids, entire abdominal wall and quadriceps. Chaturanga strengthens the arms and wrists, as well as the abdomen.

From Downward-Facing Dog, raise up onto your tiptoes, and rolling over them, come into a high push-up position. Hold here for a few deep breaths, making sure your wrists are directly in line under your shoulders, heels are lifted towards the sky and hips are lowered and in line with the rest of your body. Keep your gaze a few inches in front of your finger tips, creating one straight line with your head, neck and back. Then, begin to slowly lower your body down to the ground through Chaturanga. Try to lower your body in one straight line, keeping your gaze forward and elbows in towards your sides and pointing back behind you.

For an extra challenge, alternate lifting your legs and holding for five to eight breaths on each side. You can also keep one leg lifted as you lower down through Chaturanga.

5. Side Plank

Side plank

Pose benefits: Builds arm, shoulder and core strength.

From a high Plank, lift your hips up slightly, then shift your weight into one hand as you roll your whole body open to the side. Stack your hips, knees and ankles vertically on top of each other. Your shoulders, hips and ankles should be in one straight line. If you find it hard to balance, try placing your top foot in front of the other on the ground. Reach your top arm straight up, forming a line from your planted wrist through your top fingers.

For an extra challenge, bend your top leg into a Tree pose and use your index and middle fingers to grab a hold of your big toe, trying to extend the top leg straight up towards the sky. Make sure to press through your supporting leg and foot, raising your hips up as much as possible.

6. Crow pose

Crow pose

Pose benefits: Builds strength in your arms, inner thighs and abdomen.

Come into a squat position with your feet about as wide as your mat, toes facing out to the sides. Plant your palms on the ground under your shoulders. Bend your arms slightly, keeping your elbows pointing towards the back, and squeeze your knees firmly around your elbows or upper arms. Rock your weight forward into your hands, coming up high on your toes. Lift your feet off the ground.

7. Boat pose

Boat pose

Pose benefits: Strengthens the abdomen, as well as the back, neck, quadriceps and hamstrings.

Sit down on your mat with your knees close to your chest, feet planted on the floor. Keeping your body close to vertical, hold behind your knees and lift your feet to bring shins parallel to the ground. Release your hands and stretch arms straight forward.

For an extra challenge, try straightening your legs and raising your arms up towards the sky.

How wearing red shoes can help educate a community on HIV prevention

$

What made you start The Red Pump Project?”

This is the question that people tend to ask us the most. The second most frequently asked question is, “With so many causes and issues in the world, why HIV?” The short answer is HIV continues to affect women of color in a disproportionate way yet people aren’t talking about it. Every 47 minutes, a woman in the United States will be diagnosed with HIV. More than likely, she will be a woman of color.

The Red Pump Project was created out of a desire to empower, educate, and motivate action by boldly driving conversation online and offline around HIV prevention. We use the Red Pump as a symbol of empowerment to represent the strength and courage of women affected by HIV/AIDS. We use red shoes as a conversation starter and while we have people’s attention, we talk about the epidemic.

In March 2009, we tapped into our online networks with a request to feature our custom-designed blog badge on their websites and to devote their social voice to the topic of HIV and women on March 10. Within eight days, over 100 bloggers signed on and our first-ever “Rock the Red Pump®” campaign was entered into the history books.

Both of us had friends who were impacted by HIV and we both had the desire to do something around the issue. “Do something.” Those two words have always been at the core of Red Pump. Every day, we strive to do something or say something to help educate others about HIV. That is how you challenge stigma and bring these important conversations to the forefront.

What started as a small idea has blossomed into a movement that has grown beyond our expectations.Six years later, we are a nonprofit organization witha great team who works incredibly hard at building our presence in Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, New York City, and Washington D.C. We continue to be motivated by the support, honesty, and openness demonstrated by our Red Pump Rockers across the country. With every tweet, blog post, and photo, they are telling the world in their own stylish way that they aren’t afraid to talk about HIV and that they stand with their sisters who have been impacted by this disease. That is beautiful. That is powerful. That is bold.

So, now that you know why we #RocktheRedPump, we want to hear from you. Today begins our annual campaign leading up to National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. Over the next ten days, follow along with us on social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook) as we highlight personal stories, share educational information, and, of course, rock our red pumps (and flats). After all, AWARENESS IS ALWAYS IN STYLE.

Why a mom of four resents the childless

$

0

While there, she gave me an encouraging pep talk about why I should come more often.

"You could totally do it!" she gushed to me, as my mind flashed to the war-like strategic planning it would take for me to find an hour and a half out of every day to make it to the gym with two full-time careers and four children.

So I just looked at her and thought, with only the teeniest bitter twinge of resentment, Oh, honey. You have no clue.

It's kind of like how I feel when first-time couples announce that they are having a baby. Or maybe even when they announce their second baby, because that's really when shit gets even more real. It's like you want to warn them what's coming, what life can really be like, but what's the point because no one can understand until they're there anyways?

I don't want to sound too bitter, because I swear I'm really not. I fully grasp the concept that I am the one who chose to bear and birth my children into the world and I fully know that we all have our own strengths and weaknesses as parents. (Mine, apparently, just seems to be, um, everything is hard.) And I certainly don't want to create the impression that life without children is just a life not worth living. There are a million and one things harder than being a parent in this world and, in many ways, parenthood enriches our lives beyond measure.

But when I see the childless of the world, those thin and energetic people like my sister, I want to shake some sense into them. I want to tell them to embrace it, to live it up and soak it all in while they can and, for crying out loud, just appreciate the experience of being able to wake up in the morning at your own pace. To be able to actually go to bed if you want at night and not hold your breath, hoping that tonight will be the night you will be able to sleep more than an hour in a row. (Keep dreaming.) To eat a meal in relative leisure and to not have to worry about SIDS or bouncing back or whether it's time to nurse the baby again or if you've ruined your child's health and future forever because you fed him McDonald's.

I know that I was once a childless person and that I didn't appreciate how much I could get done in that time in my life. In the bittersweet perfect hindsight that is time, I can't help but wonder if every future parent could only get a taste of parenthood first, how much more motivated and appreciative we would all be of everything. Holding doors for everyone. Coffee for all. Maternity leave a must-have and not considered a vacation!

If only we could all experience the struggle of learning to live not just for ourselves, maybe, just maybe, what a wonderful world it would be.

Sex tips to remember if his member is too big or too small

$

To be honest, it really isn't that big of a deal. We've all dated guys who have underachieving penises and have been a little scared of how that would affect the relationship especially if it was a micro penis.

Many of us have had been with men who've been "well endowed" and we know that sometimes that can feel like the police are trying to beat down your cervix with a battering ram. Then there are the men who are hung like horses, 13-inch penis? No thank you, sir.

First, a little pertinent information, the normal size penis is 3-6 inches when fully erect, with the average being around 5.5 inches, so if your man falls into that range he is perfectly normal. Did you know it only takes about 3 inches to "fill" a woman and most nerve endings are within the first inch?

So maybe your guy has a micro penis or maybe he is large and in charge; it doesn't matter. I'm here to tell you that with a few tips you can have amazing sex with your partner no matter what size his penis is.

Foreplay

Whether your partner has a huge penis or a tiny one, foreplay is the key to unlocking your big O! Either way, have lots of foreplay. If he's tiny, a few key foreplay moves will make you not even notice. An eager lover skilled in the use of his fingers and mouth will make you forget all about what he may be "lacking" down below. Most orgasms happen before the penis ever comes into play anyway.

If your lover has a little more than you're used to down below, a good amount of foreplay will get those juices flowing and make penetration easier. Believe me, you want lubricant. If your lover is not one to like to spend a lot of time with "formalities," make it a game. Propose a game or tie him up, so that you are in charge of when penetration happens. Tease him; he'll be willing to ravish you the minute he's free.

Cock rings

I don't recommend cock rings if your partner is large in girth, but if you feel like you could use a little more "width" it will offer you a more full feeling. You can both have a lot of fun putting it on and it will help him maintain his erection longer and harder. If you really want to up the pleasure factor, try a vibrating cock ring.

Positions

If your partner has a small penis, you may want to guide him to use positions that allow for deeper penetration like the hound. Lower yourself onto your forearms and really push back into your partner as he enters you from behind or the Sphinx. Lie on your stomach with your weight on your forearms with one leg outstretched behind and the other bent out to the side. Your partner will then be slightly on top of you, weight on his arms, entering you from behind. The pressure of his body on your pelvis creates extra pleasure for you while enabling him to penetrate you more deeply.

Or try a favorite position for all sizes, reverse cowgirl. Have your partner lay on his back as you sit on top of him, facing the opposite direction.

For the guy with the above-average member, try the galley position. Get your partner to sit with his weight on his right arm and his legs out in front of him. Sit astride him, with your back facing him as your lean forward. You'll be in total control, as well as being perfectly placed to get some extra attention to your clitoris.

The simple truth of the matter is that the size of a man's penis doesn't have to affect the quality of his lovemaking. With these three tips, you'll never have to worry that his penis won't be fulfilling ever again.

Ben Affleck on daddy duty: Jennifer Garner says "it's my turn" to work

$

Batman Ben Affleck is back on daddy duty, as Garner says she is ready to go back to work after being home with their three children.

"I've been home for a long time," she recently told reporters. "It's my turn, and I'm going to go to work this spring. I think I'll work the spring and summer, maybe the fall too, as long as some of it's at home. I don't think my deals are done yet, so I can't say, but yeah, I'm about to go to work."

The 42-year-old actress has had a few roles recently, including those in Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and Dallas Buyers Club — but nothing compared to Affleck's career, which is going full steam.

"Ben is super busy, and I'm super happy for him," she said. "I chose to stay home this year and just said, 'Go for it, babe. Do it all. Do Gone Girl, do Batman, do The Accountant. Do everything.' I want that for him, and I'm happy for him. And he says the same to me. Except that he's really busy. But he understands that when I really have to do it, we figure it out."

Garner joked that even though Affleck's career is red-hot right now, all of Seraphina's friends think she is the main movie star and he is a regular dad, thanks to the Alexander movie.

"My kids really got a lot of juice out of the fact that I was in that movie. I heard about a little kid saying to their mom the other day at school. The mom said something about Ben, and the little kid said no, Sera's mom is a movie star, and her dad just comes along. I was like, that's awesome, because she saw Alexander," she said.

Garner admitted that despite having a supportive husband, figuring out her filming schedule can be tough, because she doesn't want to be away from her kids for very long.

"You'd be amazed how we figure it out. I've never been away for more than I think four days," she said. "I sit down at the beginning of the movie and say to the people making the schedule, 'Let's look at this.' Then I figure out where I'm going to take the kid and when I can get home."

Garner and Affleck aren't the only celeb parents that takes turns working, as Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr., who have kids Charlotte and Rocky together, do the same. "We fight over who gets to stay home," she said. "You'd think it would be the opposite, that the parents would be like, 'No, I'll go to work!' But he’s like, 'You stayed home for two years! It's my turn!'"

The comment was quickly rebutted by fellow readers, "Sounds like YOU are the one who shouldn't be raising children," one responded. "When you get a chance, pull your face out of your religious book — thousands of years have passed! People have evolved. Catch up."

"If you have nothing nice to say, ZIP YOU (sic) MOUTH!!" another chimed in.

And more than news and a photo of that precious little baby boy, the comments also served to warm my heart. Because it shows that people are becoming more accepting. Families come in all shapes and sizes. Parents don't all look the same. And that is amazing!

Of course, we still have a long way to go and there is still progress to be made. But the vast majority of comments on the news have been full of love and praise for Gilbert, Perry and their growing family.
