Darling DIY mini Minecraft Creeper felt toy

Supplies

Supplies:

  • Creeper template
  • Polyester felt in several shades of green, black and gray
  • Freezer paper
  • Embroidery thread (green)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue
  • Iron (not pictured)
  • Cotton ball (not pictured)

Step 1:

Print out the Creeper template. Tear out a sheet of freezer paper and trace the Creeper onto the freezer paper (make sure the "shiny" part is facing down). Trace the body of the Creeper twice (that will be front and back). Trace the face and the little squares separately from the body.

Step 2:

Step 2

Cut out the face and little squares of freezer paper into smaller squares. Set your iron to a low heat setting. Iron the freezer paper (shiny side down) onto the felt. The freezer paper will lightly adhere to the felt. Cut out the shapes for the toy. The freezer paper makes the felt much easier to cut out. Once the pieces are cut out, remove the freezer paper.

Step 3:

Step 3

Glue the face and the smaller squares onto 1 piece of the green body. Give it a few minutes to dry. While the glue is drying, prepare the tapestry needle and thread. Embroidery thread separates into 6 strands. Pull out 2 of the strands and thread them into your needle. Tie a knot at the end of the thread.

Step 4:

Step 4

The best way to sew 2 pieces of felt is with a blanket stitch. To begin, pin the 2 felt body pieces together. Insert the needle between the 2 pieces of felt. Pull the thread through until the knot is in between the 2 layers of felt. Insert the needle back into the felt about a 1/4 inch from where you first brought the needle up and push through both layers of felt.

Step 5:

Step 5

Before you pull the thread completely snug, insert the tip of the needle through the loop you just created and pull the thread through. This creates the first blanket stitch. Repeat around the body of the toy, stopping about 3/4 of the way. Tease out the cotton ball and use it to stuff into the body and head of the toy.

Step 6:

Step 6

Continue sewing around the Creeper, taking care to keep the cotton stuffing in place. When you are finished sewing, secure the seam close with a knot. Re-thread your needle and tie a knot at the end. Insert the needle through the top of the Creeper's head and pull it through.

Step 7:

Step 7

Cut the loop near the eye of the needle. Then, grab both ends of the thread and tie a knot. This will create a loop at the top of the toy. Give the little green guy to your kids to hang from their backpacks. They will love it!

From Barbies to Bratz: The debate over dolls

$

0

Growing up in the '80s, I loved Barbie. I had about 10 or so of the iconic dolls, with a Skipper and a few Kens thrown in for good measure. As a preschooler and then elementary-age kid, I concocted all sorts of fantasy play scenarios for my Barbies to act out. Then, as a middle schooler, one with burgeoning thoughts and feelings, my Barbies took on a different role, allowing me to act out more risqué scenarios in a safe space (and speaking with many women of similar age, it sounds like I was certainly not alone in this behavior). Throughout all that play, I can't recall thinking too hard about Barbie's body — unless it was to cut her hair or cover her in "tattoos." Yet, as an adult, I look at Barbie and a few of her contemporaries and wonder what impact she may have had without me even realizing it.

Look through the doll aisle in stores today and you'll see a range of options from softer, more baby doll types to ones that would seem more at home in a night club. Bratz and Monster High Dolls are both notorious for being hypersexualized. These plastic dolls have faces full of makeup, wide eyes, pouty lips, bodies completely out of proportion in a way that would put Barbie to shame and clothes that look like they came off the set of Pretty Woman. What types of messages do these dolls send to young girls about their worth and value, especially as it relates to their looks and body image? How much do these types of dolls — that litter toy shelves — impact young children?

Melissa Atkins Wardy, author of Redefining Girly: How Parents Can Fight the Stereotyping and Sexualizing of Girlhood, from Birth to Tween blogs about these issues frequently at her site Pigtail Pals and Ballcap Buddies. "When we look at what messages and influence a toy like a doll might have on a girl, we need to be mindful of representations that lack diversity in body type, race, hair type and style, ableness, etc.," Atkins Wardy shared with me. In addition to her blogging, Atkins Wardy consults and advises various toy companies to work on the limitations seen in current popular dolls. Speaking of these companies, she noted, "They have limits, which is why we see often only one body mold on a brand of doll. This is true even for the less problematic brands. But can these companies do better with diversity? Yes. Absolutely yes and I constantly encourage them to as representations of beauty and what is 'desirable' by society are far too narrow and damage the psyche of young girls."

And the potential for damage is all too real. A recent study out of Oregon State University that explored the influence of fashion dolls (like Bratz and Barbie) found that girls who play with these types of dolls see fewer career options for themselves than for boys.

According to Atkins Wardy, one way to combat the negative stereotypes and lack of diversity in the more popular dolls is for parents to ensure that there are a variety of dolls in their homes. To that end, there are many new dolls emerging that stray from the problematic pattern of their predecessors. Companies working on shifting the limited offering of dolls include Lottie Dolls, Go! Go! Sports Girls, Moxie Girlz, Hearts for Hearts Girls and even Goldieblox, which recently announced a new action figure.

A Pirate Lottie Doll.

Image: Lottie Dolls/Arklu Toys

Lucie Follett, co-founder and creative director of Arklu, the toy company behind Lottie Dolls, said that she purposefully went against the stereotype when designing Lottie. "Lottie is different in that she represents the realities of a real child, and all the multifaceted ways to be a girl," Follett explained. "We believe that children shouldn't be vilified for not fitting a certain ideal; we have incorporated choice and diversity, so that girls can enjoy Lottie dolls which engage in a wide range of activities to fit every personality, be they activities typically perceived as 'girly' such as ballet, fancy dress or tea parties, or science-based themes, as well as those which are engaged in sports and literacy, amongst others."

Lottie, as well as some of her new contemporaries tend to have a wider range of body types, ethnic backgrounds and interests that better reflect the girls (and boys!) that play with them. Hopefully this new wave of dolls will offer more options for both parents and children alike.

Kim Kardashian and North West involved in a car crash

And this afternoon was just the cherry on top of a really crappy sundae. The family, including Kim, Khloé, younger sister Kylie Jenner and, most terrifyingly, Kim's toddler daughter North West, were involved in a seriously scary car accident.

While driving in Bozeman, Montana, Khloé Kardashian reportedly skidded on a patch of ice and then slid into a ditch. According to TMZ, who broke the story, Khloé was driving her family when a semi truck passed their vehicle, kicking up snow and blinding her. When she couldn't see, she began to swerve, hit a patch of black ice and slid, finally coming to a stop in a ditch.

Police did show up on the scene, but there was reportedly no damage to the vehicle and it was a passing motorist who called the authorities.

No citations were issued, and apparently the family was calm by the time police arrived.

The incident seems to be much more of a scary situation than an actual accident, thankfully. But any time you are in a potentially serious position with your family and especially with a small child, it can be super-scary and stressful.

The older girls have broken their silence, letting their fans know they are OK and thankful for God's good graces during such a scary time. Both Kim and Kourtney posted beautiful photos of scenic Montana with thankful captions.

This comes right on the heels of Bruce Jenner's involvement in a fatal car accident and in the midst of an annoying amount of Twitter drama between the Kardashians and model Amber Rose.

We are just so glad to hear that everyone is OK! What a scary day.

Puppy Chihuahua plays with bubbles

Puppy Chihuahua plays with bubbles

We're not sure if this is a teacup Chihuahua, but her tiny size makes her just squeezable. In fact, I should have never let my kids watch the video as I wrote this article... because now they want a dog. And this cute little gal is kind of making me rethink my boilerplate answer of "No."

Slow motion effects and perfect background music make this simple video of the tiny Chihuahua puppy bounding at bubbles even that much more adorable. If watching this little gal's hind legs practically surpassing the front ones as she leaps for bubble after bubble doesn't put you in a feel-good mood, we're not sure what will.

Here's why I let my daughter stay up late to watch the Oscars

My daughter is 10 years old, and I'm raising her to have a highly critical eye when it comes to the media she consumes. I work in journalism, my husband works in advertising, and we are all too aware of how media not only the affects the self-image of our own daughter but that of her brothers and peers as well.

You can't hide from the media.

You can't censor every TV show or magazine or commercial your kid is exposed to. You can do everything in your power to try and ensure that your young teen doesn't come into contact with out-and-out pornography, but chances are, they'll run across a Carl's Jr. ad or see a Sports Illustrated with one of their favorite toys on the cover. I believe it is our job as parents to teach our kids to approach the media they consume with a critical eye, and the Academy Awards are the perfect classroom for that.

During the Emmys, I introduced my kid to the concept of #AskherMore, and we spent the show asking the red carpet celebs not just what designer they were wearing, but what their favorite books are and how their best friend inspired them. We booed loudly when celebrities were only asked who designed their gowns and jewelry. I made sure to point out the stars who were more diverse than the Jennifer Lawrences and the Emma Watsons, and we talked about how gorgeous stars like Kathy Bates and Viola Davis looked in their gowns, even though they may be a bit older than Lupita Nyong'o. And we talked about the advertising shown during the award show and whether or not it was effective in terms of wanting us to buy a product and showcasing the brand it was advertising in a positive way.

I'll let my kid stay up late tonight, even though it's a school night, to watch the Oscars with us. She'll nap this afternoon and probably still be tired tomorrow morning, but I think it's worth it to spend this time talking to her about sexism in the media. Plus, we both love seeing the pretty dresses.

Are you planning on watching with your own daughter? Leave us a comment on how you watch the Oscars with your own kids.

Sean Penn's 'green card' Oscars joke causes Twitter to bring up his dark past

More: Sean Penn wants to be a daddy for the third time, with Charlize Theron

Penn announced the Best Picture award at Sunday night's ceremony, and just before he announced that Mexican-born director Alejandro González Iñárritu was going to win film of the year for Birdman, he made an insensitive comment.

"Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?" Penn said.

And although Penn and Iñárritu are good friends, with Penn even starring in the director's film 21 Grams, Twitter has been whipped into a frenzy by this comment. Many people have been calling Penn "racist" and "tacky" and there have even been some who have brought up the accusations that he is a woman-beater — Penn was reportedly very violent toward his ex-wife Madonna, and in one incident, he allegedly hit her across the head with a baseball bat.

1. Margot Robbie's matte red lips & sexy hair

Margot Robbie red lip

Va. Va. Voom. Seriously. The lips are courtesy of Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Raven. (Sephora, $10 for the mini size) And her hair is by Garnier — that silky, sleek texture was created with a combo of Garnier products. First, stylist Renato Campora prepped Robbie's hair with Sleek and Shine Sleek Primer Style Prep ($5) and thickening lotion. Then, he created a deep side part, dried her hair 80 percent, sprayed in some Full & Plush Root Amp Root Lifting Spray ($5) and finished drying with a round brush. To smooth out the ends, he used a tiny amount of Marvelous Oil Frizz Defy. HOT! (GarnierUSA.com, $6)

2. Lupita Nyong'o's soft gray eyeshadow

The Lancôme Ambassadress is, obviously, wearing Lancôme makeup. I can't tell you how she gets her otherwordly skin to glow like that, but I can tell you that a pretty, light gray eyeshadow is a beautiful idea to steal. The exact products used:

3. Chrissy Teigen's black cherry lips

Another super-sexy look, Chrissy's makeup is all Maybelline New York. Props to Master Glaze Blush Stick in Just-Pinched Pink (CVS, $6) and Face Studio Master Hi-Light in Coral (Ulta, $10), she has a really gorgeous glow. But the number one item I'll be snapping up ASAP: Color Sensational Creamy Mattes in Divine Wine. (Ulta, $8)

4. Dakota Johnson's saucy ponytail

Dove Celebrity Stylist Mark Townsend did the Fifty Shade of Grey starlet's hair, and the key to that great texture? Dove Refresh+Care Invigorating Dry Shampoo (Drugstore.com, $5).

5. Jessica Chastain's soft & sexy cat eye (and creamy skin)

Jessica Chastain

Another flawless all-over beauty look, but that gorgeous two-toned cat eye is divine. Kristofer Buckle for Kiehl's did Jessica's makeup, starting with a layer of Kiehl’s Creme De Corps (Kiehl's, $11) to make sure Jessica’s arms, legs and décolletage were as flawless as her face. Next, he prepped Jessica's skin with Hydro Plumping Re-texturizing Serum (Kiehl's, $58), which works as a primer and is extremely moisturizing. Then, he added a thin layer of Ultra Facial Cream (Kiehl's, $27), applied Creamy Eye Treatment With Avocado (Kiehl's, $29) and followed by BB Cream in Light. (Kiehl's, $38)

Bonus tip: To create that soft winged eye, he used eyeshadow instead of liquid liner — brilliant!

6. Emma Stone's coral lips

Emma Stone Oscars

Celebrity makeup artist Rachel Goodwin created this gorgeous look to complement Emma Stone's bold chartreuse dress. Those soft, smoky eyes were created with Revlon PhotoReady 3D Volume Mascara in Black (Ulta, $10); and CHANEL Limited Edition Lumières Facettes Quadra Eye Shadow (Chanel, $59) and Écriture de Chanel Eyeliner Pen in Brun (Chanel, $35).

But the real star of this beauty look is that pretty coral lip — something we can all copy, especially as spring draws near. Get the exact look with REVLON Ultra HD Lipstick in HD Tulip. (Target, $8)

7. Jenna Dewan's sleek, low ponytail

Jenna Dewan Tatum ponytail hairstyle

Celebrity hairstylist Derek Williams created this chic pony with just the right amount of texture and body. To get this look, first Derek applied KMS California FREESHAPE hot flex crème (Ulta, $20) to her towel-dried hair, and blew it dry straight using a flat brush.

Next, Derek went over Jenna’s hair with a flat iron, and ran a dime-sized amount of SILKSHEEN polishing serum (Beautybay.com, $19) throughout her hair. Once he brushed it back into a low, sleek ponytail, Derek sprayed Jenna’s ponytail with HAIRSTAY dry xtreme hairspray (Ulta, $18) to give the ponytail some slight texture and movement.

Settle tagged Rutherford in this pic and captioned it, "things are never black and white." Does this prove they are dating? No, but it does prove that they are very content in each other's company.

Before we dive right in, there are a few things you need to know about broccoli. Why are parents so adamant that their kids eat it? According to The World's Healthiest Foods, broccoli is an all-star vegetable because of its fiber content, rich levels of vitamins A and K needed to support vitamin D metabolism and prevent deficiency and its detoxifying ability that comes from a specific combination of phytonutrients.

For kids and for adults, broccoli is kind of a big deal. Here are 12 creative ways to serve this overlooked veggie and make it a family favorite.

Teen from 'laser cat' yearbook photo takes his own life

How completely heartbreaking.

"He made friends wherever he went," Jonathan Stewart, Draven's father, told the local news. "He had friends all over the country — people he'd met at youth leadership conferences, online, just around town."

Draven Rodriguez Laser cat photo

Draven Rodriguez Laser cat photo

How could this beautiful kid, who had the creativity and humor to come up with the most epic high school yearbook photo ever, find himself in such darkness that he would take his own life? We'll never know.

Which brings to mind last night's touching speech by Oscar-winning screenwriter Graham Moore, who used his few seconds standing in front of the world to reveal his own suicide attempt at 16 years old and reach out to kids at home just like him.

"I tried to commit suicide at 16, and now I'm standing here," Moore said during his speech. "I would like for this moment to be for that kid out there who feels like she doesn't fit in anywhere. You do. Stay weird. Stay different, and then when it's your turn and you are standing on this stage, please pass the same message along."

I couldn't help but wish that Draven could have heard that call to just hold on until it was his "turn to stand on this stage."

People who are quietly suffering are all around us, and both Draven and Graham Moore remind us to stay involved and vigilant in taking care of those we suspect are struggling with depression or having thoughts of suicide. And so often it is the "weird" kids — the ones who are the most complicated and creative and sensitive — who need us the most. And sadly they're too often the least likely to ask for help.

In case you missed Moore's moving Oscar speech, watch it now.

Rest in peace, Draven Rodriguez, you beautiful soul. We've all lost the opportunity to watch you assume your place on that stage. Hopefully this will remind us to help convince the next Draven to hold on just a little longer.

Still, they remain friends and she even steers her one great love to William's door to help William land his article in Rolling Stone.

From The Blind Side to American Pie and even our favorite TV show Friday Night Lights, the dumb jock stereotype always comes into play. Everyone knows, though, that Riggins wasn't dumb, just lazy.

The guy whose father makes all his decisions

MoxImage: Giphy.com

Think Mox from Varsity Blues. He doesn't really care for football and feels incredibly under pressure once he finds himself off the bench and on the field. Sure, football is what his father wants for him, but what does Mox want?

The bad boy (who usually turns good with the love of a sweet girl)

10 ThingsImage: Giphy.com

So, technically, the premise behind 10 Things I Hate About You was to make a modern-day Taming of the Shrew. At the end of the day, though, this was also a movie about how bad boys are changed by the lovin' of a good woman. In this instance, we learned most of his bad ways were just rumors. But Kat still changes Patrick for the good, if only by convincing him to give up cigarettes.

The wild and crazy dumbass

Stifler Image: Giphy.com

Seann William Scott perfected this role as Stifler in American Pie. No one does it better.

The well-meaning idiot

KelsoImage: Giphy.com

Ashton Kutcher nailed it in That '70s Show. But, again with American Pie, Jim also did an excellent job of holding up the trope.

The neglected husband/boyfriend

Sex TapeImage: LiveForFilms.com

Have you seen Sex Tape yet? It's basically Marshall Erikson (Jason Segel) feeling unloved and unwanted by his wife, Cameron Diaz. He sulks a little and tries really hard. Eventually she gives in and plans a special night. Pretty much any movie or show that features a working woman also features a neglected husband. Ugh.

The alpha male who ignores/mistreats his partner

The ShiningImage: Giphy.com

The flip side of the neglected husband is the alpha male: the breadwinner husband who is too caught up in providing for his family to give them any love.

Ugh. Poor guys really get a bad rep in romantic comedies. Sorry, brosephs! We're sure plenty of you are more multidimensional and suck way less than the boys in movies.

The Vampire Diaries: 6 Things are going to change now that Sheriff Forbes is dead

$

0

Executive producer Julie Plec gave us the inside scoop at the show's scope for the remainder of the season, assuring us that quite a few characters will be heading in new directions for the final half of the season.

More: Will The Vampire Diaries' Steven R. McQueen get his own spin-off show?

WARNING: Spoilers below. Do not continue reading unless you want to know all the vampirelicious dirt on Season 6.

1. We're switching focus

Now that Sheriff Forbes is dead, we're going to get back to the supernatural heart of the show. Caroline (Candice Accola) losing her mom was a very human story line for the show. I'm really hoping that the next half will be all about the bloodsucking bad guys we know and love. They've been kind of absent from this season of the show thus far, but if Enzo has any say about it, they're sure to make a comeback.

2. Enzo's big purpose

Though we've only gotten teases of his big motive so far this season, Plec assured us that we are going to get to the heart of Enzo's goals once the show returns. "It's not going well for him at the moment," Plec said of Enzo's master plan. "Ultimately, Enzo's a guy who's deeply rooted in loyalty. And we still haven't scratched the surface of learning why: What makes him tick, why does he feel that way, why was Stefan's betrayal of Damon (Ian Somerhalder) in Enzo's mind so profound that it makes Enzo want to just go out of his way for sport to do things that will mess up Stefan's life?"

3. Enzo's backstory

"One of the things that we do in the final chapter of the season, once we get through what we call 'the Sheriff Forbes chapter,' is start exploring the backstory of Enzo and understanding what makes him tick and why he is the way he is," Plec promised.

4. Matt has a new direction

Matt is about to "embark on a new path for himself," Plec shared. We saw that he'll be joining the police academy, and we would be surprised if he'll eventually take over for Sheriff Forbes, though Plec was sure to say that her seat would remain vacant until Season 7.

5. Alaric and Jo

While Plec said producers initially had no idea who would win the merge, they were always "rooting for Jo because we have a plan for Jo."

Thanks to last week's episode, we know that plan is a little bundle of joy and a wedding for the new lovebirds. And while that romance definitely happened quickly, we have a feeling these two have what it takes to make it work. We just hope to see more of Jo in the future. She seems like she could be the perfect mentor for Elena (Nina Dobrev), who is embarking on a medical career (if she ever goes back to school).

6. Caroline's emotions

The big drama of the last episode was Caroline, who decided to switch off her emotions just as Stefan decided he really did want to pursue a long-term relationship with her. (Why are they always just a little too late?)

Although we didn't actually see Caroline flip the switch, we did see her snap Elena's neck and make a run for it. And, thanks to the preview for the next episode, we know she's definitely going off the deep end.

The Mamafesto: Are we getting closer to equality in the home?

$

The annual Economic Report of the President includes one chapter that focuses on the economics of the family home, and the most recent report shows some interesting data. Today's families are seeing more mothers working outside the home than ever before. The reality is that most families need more than one income to stay afloat (and you know, there's also the fact that many women actually enjoy working outside the home!), and more than 40 percent of mothers are the primary source of income for their families. That's pretty significant.

And for the most part, in addition to bringing home the bacon, these mothers are cooking it up and washing all the accompanying dishes. Because although times have changed and we've moved far from the stereotypical image of June Cleaver, there are still traditional ideas about who does what work inside the home. Thankfully it seems like those are slowly changing.

According to the Economic Report, there has been a noticeable rise in fathers helping out at home. Vocativ sums up the findings:

"Over an eight-year period, the number of dads who helped with homework, read to their kids, and bathed and diapered their infants rose by at least five percentage points in all categories."

Five percentage points! OK, that's not a huge increase, but let's focus on the positive — at least they're helping out more. And the report notes that fathers are spending more time at home in general. In homes where both parents work, it just makes sense that the household duties get split in an even and fair manner.

Maybe it's because I grew up in a household where both parents worked, but both also chipped in equally around the house. While my father usually left for work before we were even up in the mornings, he was the one making breakfast on the weekends. And while my mother cooked dinner most nights, my father was always on dish duty (something I suspect to this day he actually enjoys!). When it came to cleaning, you'd just as easily see my father with the vacuum or duster as you would my mother, and whoever remembered was on garbage duty. This translated into my life as well. Both my husband and I work, and we equally share — and ignore — household chores. Sometimes I cook, sometimes he does, and sometimes we split the difference and eat out. Same with dishes, cleaning, garbage and groceries.

It's not always equal, but it's always fair. While statistics aren't quite showing an even 50/50 split yet when it comes to who does what around the home in two-working-parent households, I have faith that we're getting there. The more we talk about it and break down the myth that the household is the feminine domain and that parenting is by default a mother's job, the more we can anticipate and expect men to step up and rise up to share in daily life demands.

Any woman who's ever had a baby can relate to that late stage of pregnancy, when the little things we used to take for granted become almost impossible. Watching television, tying shoelaces, walking…

Catherine, who is due to give birth in a couple of weeks, is currently on maternity leave from the ITV soap and although she's been trying hard to keep her ever-expanding belly hidden from the paparazzi, she's clearly more than happy to let her fans see her bump in all its glorious naked glory.

How Clarissa Explains It All proved gender roles were complete BS

Sure, you can look back over time and find examples of rebellious girls and tomboys on TV. Punky Brewster wore a belt across her forehead, for goodness' sake. However, that fashion seemed more like a spectacle and less like something illimitable. By the time Clarissa came along, though, we were older, wiser and itching for something new to latch onto. Tired of matching our shorts with our shirts, of playing with horse figurines and Barbies and downright nauseous from all the rose prints in our bedrooms, Clarissa gave young girls hope of a life, wardrobe and bedroom that fit our insides, whether our parents liked it or not.

More: Clarissa was only the tip of the iceberg for Nickelodeon's diversity drive

Fashion

ClarissaImage: Giphy.com

In the early '90s, preteens were surviving on pretty denim skirts, Kelly Kapowski-inspired tiny prints and so, so many matching bottoms and tank tops from the likes of Limited Too. Seriously, did anyone else have that hideous bold yellow-and-white striped shorts/T-shirt combo?

Clarissa entered and with her came a new sense of style. Clarissa (played by Melissa Joan Hart) didn't dress like a little girl — she often dressed like she belonged at a concert for a grungy garage band. On any given day, there wasn't much difference between the holey jeans she rocked and the ones pulled up high on her best friend, Sam. Her clothes were looser, more androgynous and 10 times more fun than anything we were wearing. And we wanted to cop the look.

Relationships

Clarissa and FergusonImage: Giphy.com

Clarissa's relationships also redefined how girls were seen on television. She was hardly Daddy's little girl or Mother's helper. She (mostly) got along with her parents, but only because they treated her like an equal instead of a princess. And, after decades of watching sisters being picked on by brothers, we finally saw a reversal in the brother-sister dynamic. Clarissa and Ferguson butted heads a lot, and while Ferguson may have sometimes seemed smarter, he was often easily outwitted by his big sis. And then, of course, there was Clarissa's relationship with Sam. While it often seemed like Sam may have liked Clarissa, she never played the swooning girl. At worst, they were equals. At best, Clarissa seemed smarter and cooler than Sam.

That bedroom

ClarissaImage: Giphy.com

Clarissa's bedroom was insane, but it truly defined what parents had to see as a "new" type of girl. Yes, the familiar family quilt was on the bed. Yes, one wall had pink-flowered wallpaper. No, Clarissa did not let that define her. In a moment of sheer genius, set designers painted black checks over the wallpaper, to show Clarissa rebelling against her girly past. Hinting at truly inspired and cool hobbies, the pretty dollhouse was loaded with video equipment — something you'd never expect to find in a girl's room. And, on another wall hung hubcaps and license plates. Whether Clarissa was a car aficionado or just liked the look/travel inspiration didn't actually matter. All that mattered was that it went against the grain of what people expected from a teenage girl.

The pet

One silly little thing that always rocked our world was Clarissa's pet. It's a stereotype as tired as the rest that says boys are supposed to like rodents and reptiles and girls are meant to like kittens and horses. (Dogs go both ways). The creator turned that cliché on its ear by saddling Clarissa with a mini alligator-like creature named Elvis.

Clarissa

Whether the showrunners meant to or not, when they created Clarissa, they created a new sense of freedom from gender stereotypes for girls across the globe. We're still in love with this all-time classic.

2 New deadly superbugs announced in the U.S. — what you need to know

$

0

The Bourbon virus may sound like something from South Park but there is nothing funny about the deadly new germ, according to the CDC. A Kentucky man contracted the virus, named after the county of Kentucky he lived in, after getting several tick bites. He quickly came down with severe symptoms, including a fever, tiredness, rash, headache, other body aches, nausea and vomiting. After 11 days in the hospital, he died of a heart attack brought on by the bug. Blood tests and a post-mortem exam showed that the virus has not been seen before.

Most people are aware that you can get illnesses like Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease from tick bites but this is a new type of illness, say the researchers. The Bourbon virus is part of a class of germs called thogotoviruses, previously only seen in Africa, Asia and Europe. Since this is the first and so far only known case of the Bourbon virus, the CDC is recommending people take typical precautions to avoid tick bites and to see a doctor immediately if they start to feel sick.

In addition to the Bourbon virus, the CDC also announced more deaths from a new antibiotic-resistant bacteria called carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, or CRE. Similar to other antibiotic-resistant superbugs like the scarily famous MRSA, the bacteria moves very quickly and doesn't respond to any known antibiotic treatments.

Officials announced three deaths from CRE and 18 new cases this year. In the past several weeks 15 people showed up at a North Carolina hospital already infected with the virus while the rest picked up the bacteria in the hospital. While it's not yet known how the 15 patients contracted it, seven patients in Los Angeles last year became ill with CRE after having a routine endoscopy, a procedure where a tube is inserted down the throat to look for ulcers or growths in the esophagus and stomach. It's thought the bacteria was spread via contaminated equipment even though the doctors say that proper disinfection procedures were followed. Two of the L.A. patients died from complications related to the infection.

Justin Bartha was creepy and sexist 4 times in less than a minute (VIDEO)

In a recent sideline interview at a New York Knicks game, the actor repeatedly ignored social cues that he was making female reporter Jill Martin extremely uncomfortable during her "New York Minute" segment. Martin very politely deflected Bartha's physical advance and rude comments at first, but the actor persisted with his line of joking with Martin, even after she made it obvious that she felt he was being inappropriate.

Jill Martin/Justin Bartha interview

Social media commenters have defended Bartha by insisting he was just joking around, and saying Martin was doing her job improperly by not playing along with the actor. True, it's in a journalist's job description to roll with some punches and be able to improv while live. However, the line is drawn when an interviewee is making unwanted advances and sexual implications about the interviewer. Bottom line, the exchange wouldn't have gone down the way it did if Martin was a man. If Bartha didn't want to answer the questions presented during the interview, he could have politely declined to talk with the reporter in the first place.

More: The Hangover's Justin Bartha is married

We can speculate that Bartha was drinking a bit during the basketball game, which is never an excuse, but might be the reason for these four times he was super-sexist and creepy in a very short amount of time.

1. He immediately puts his arm around Martin

We have a feeling that's not how he starts off most interviews. Martin was very obviously caught off-guard and tries to brush off both the physical advance and the comment Bartha makes about her appearance.

2. He references his own child

While talking about your new baby during an interview is usually endearing, in this instance it just ups the creepy factor. Bartha says, "I just had a kid, so I haven't gotten out much," which makes it even more strange that he continues to harass Martin, despite his own daughter being on his mind.

3. He implies that Martin is infatuated with Bradley Cooper

Yes, it's a common opinion that Bradley Cooper is hot. Bartha's joke about Martin chasing his Hangover costar might have been acceptable if he left it with a one-line quip. Martin's not cool with the reference, and Bartha killed the joke. Like, ran it over with a steamroller, backed over it again in reverse and then ran over it again, killed it. All in all, Bartha says Cooper's name six times during the interview and references the American Sniper actor even more than that.

More: Bradley Cooper's diet could include 11 Crunchwraps and 17 other foods

4. He alludes to a threesome with Martin

When Martin tries to change the subject from her alleged obsession with Cooper by asking about the possibility of another Hangover sequel, Bartha quickly answers, "No. There's no chance. No. There may be, you know, maybe we can do something, like, me and you and maybe we can get Bradley to come and do..." Super classy.

10 Genius coffeemaker cooking hacks for when you don't have a kitchen

$

It turns out this one appliance can open you to a world of culinary possibility, from American classics (hot dogs, anyone?) to date night fare (poached salmon for dinner, chocolate fondue for dessert!).

Check out the 10 delicious coffeemaker hacks below, and rest easy knowing that the next time you're stuck with nothing but a coffeemaker, you can still eat like a queen.

1. Ramen

keurig coffee pot ramen

Image: Reddit

This trick makes total sense, especially since the college set (who are most likely to be dependent on a coffeemaker for their cooking needs) pretty much have ramen, cheap and tasty, at the bottom of their food pyramids. If you're using a cup of noodles, you can simply brew hot water (this works both with a Keurig and regular coffeemakers) and pour it into the cup. If you have a packet of ramen, put the noodles in the carafe of your regular coffeemaker, add 2 cups of water to the back of the machine, and let it run through a cycle. Leave the noodles in the carafe on the burner until they're cooked to your liking, add the seasoning packet, and enjoy.

2. Hot dogs

coffee pot hot dogs

Image: Cooking with Your Coffee Maker

You can make hot dogs or any precooked sausages in your coffeepot. This method calls for wrapping your carafe in foil to help evenly distribute the heat, running your water through a cycle twice to "super heat" it, then letting your 'dogs cook for 25 minutes in the carafe on the burner.

3. Grilled cheese

spinach goat cheese and avocado grilled cheese

Turns out the burner on your coffeemaker can be used for much more than heating up water! You can make basically any grilled cheese on the coffeemaker's burner (like this spinach, goat cheese and avocado masterpiece!). Line the burner with foil for easy cleanup, then cook away. It will take a little longer than the traditional stovetop method, but the results are just as delicious.

4. Hard-boiled eggs

coffee maker pot hard boiled eggs

Image: Carla Birnberg

This one is super easy. Place your eggs in the carafe of your coffeemaker, fill the machine with water, and run through a cycle. Leave the eggs in the water for 7 to 10 minutes (7 will be softer; 10 will be fully hard-boiled), then drain the eggs, and rinse with cold water until cool to the touch.

5. Rice and couscous

coffee maker couscous

The key to cooking rice in your coffeemaker is to use instant rice. Add the rice to the carafe, then run the amount of water specified on the package through the coffeemaker. Leave the rice on the burner until it is tender and most of the water has been absorbed. Couscous is easy too. Add the couscous and any seasonings to the carafe, run the required amount of water through the pot, remove from the burner, and cover the top with foil so that no steam escapes. Let it sit for 5 minutes, then fluff with a fork, and enjoy. Try this spicy harissa couscous with chickpeas using water in the machine and some bouillon instead of chicken broth in the pot.

6. Fondue

coffee pot fondue

Image: Coffee Machine Cuisine

You can make cheese or chocolate fondue in the coffeemaker. To make dessert, turn on the machine, then add some heavy cream to the carafe. Once it's warm, add some dark chocolate, and stir until the chocolate has melted and incorporated with the cream. The nice thing about this is that if the mixture starts to cool down too much, you can just set it back on the coffeemaker's burner for a few minutes to reheat. You can make this cheese fondue too if you're more into savory than sweet.

7. "Steamed" veggies

veggie people

Make a nice, crisp-tender side of broccoli or snap peas (basically any veggie!) by putting them into the filter basket where the coffee grounds usually go, filling the machine with water and running through one or two cycles (until the veggies are done to your liking).

8. Poached salmon

coffee pot poached salmon

coffee pot poached salmon

You'll want to clean your coffeepot really well after this one, but imagine being able to create a meal of delicate poached salmon in your dorm or hotel room! Chow recommends using a flavorful poaching liquid of sake, miso, brown sugar and aromatics in the coffeepot along with a filet of salmon. Add enough water to the coffeemaker so that when the cycle runs, the fish will be fully submerged in water. Set a timer for 20 minutes, and voilà — you have a flavorful salmon dinner.

9. Oatmeal

oatmeal

Making oatmeal in your coffeemaker couldn't be easier. Add instant oatmeal to the carafe, pour the required amount of water into the machine, and let it run through a cycle. No more rushing to the free continental breakfast at your hotel that seems to be served only from 6 to 6:10 a.m.

10. Beer

beer gif

Image: Giphy

The (literal) geniuses over at Southern Fried Science have put together a guide to brewing beer "using only materials commonly found on a modestly sized oceanographic research vessel," which includes a coffeemaker as the main brewing instrument. If you aren't on board a seafaring vessel, with no beer, then this method isn't very practical, but if you like experimenting with your food and beverage, then by all means, dedicate that old coffeemaker you have stored in your basement or under the sink to this project, and have at it!
