Fresh Off the Boat: Don't be afraid to love this cultural comedy

$

This new ABC series isn't your typical TV sitcom. There's a bit of controversy around it, thanks to the guy the story is based on. Eddie Huang made waves when he decided to basically tear apart the network and everyone behind turning his book into a TV show. He even went so far as to say he didn't like the fact that they hired a non-Asian woman to run the series.

More: Bachelorette's Desiree Hartsock and Chris Siegfried are engaged no more

Let's just say it was one intense panel at the Television Critics Association tour. At one point, I wondered if Huang and a journalist were going to come to blows. Between the essay and that very intense panel, there was a lot of talk about race and diversity and drama, and frankly, I got fed up. That's when I decided to ignore everything else and just watch it. When I did, I discovered a funny, sweet series.

It's not a caricature

At the TCA panel, the cast and creators of the show were met with a question that left the whole room reeling.

"I love the Asian culture. And I was just talking about the chopsticks, and I just love all that. Will I get to see that, or will it be more Americanized?"

Yep, they were actually asked if chopsticks would be in the show. It was a moment I won't forget for a while. While you might expect that some tired, overdone drawing of an Asian would have chopsticks, this show isn't about playing up the culture. It has a lot more depth than that.

It's all about the characters

After watching the first three episodes of the series, it didn't take long for me to forget that this was supposed to be an Asian show. Of course, there were elements that were specific to the Asian experience, but I just started to see it as a show about a really funny family struggling to find their way in a world they don't recognize.

For me, it boiled down to each of the characters. If I'm watching a comedy, I want to laugh, and Fresh Off the Boat made me laugh. It doesn't get much simpler than that.

More: 9 Reasons My Big Fat Fabulous Life will be your new favorite show

Goofy dads are always funny

The dad on the show is kind of a dork. It's a characterization we've seen before, but who doesn't giggle at a dad driving a car while singing along to the latest pop song on the radio? I don't care what color your skin is or where you were born; chances are, one of your parents did that to you when you were a kid. Watching Eddie squirm as he's forced to listen to his family sing a song he finds embarrassing is hilarious.

The message that the show gets across is that you don't have to be the same to find a way to fit in, and really, it's applicable to anyone.

Eddie is my new hero

In the series, we see the world through Eddie's eyes as he struggles to find his place in a new city. The thing about Eddie is that he's going through something that a lot of kids do: being different. Whether you looked different, listened to different music or wore the "wrong" clothes, all of us can relate to what Eddie is going through. The more I watched, the more I dug how he didn't force himself to conform to the other kids in his school and yet still managed to find friends.

The little brothers will win your heart

Eddie may be the cool kid in the family, but his little brothers are adorable and steal a few scenes of their own. While Eddie has to fight to be understood in his new school, his little brothers are the kinds of kids who seem to fit in no matter where they go. They instantly make friends and even have a few young ladies interested in them. It's hard to know which is more fun, seeing the brothers become so popular or seeing Eddie's reactions to their popularity.

Does this sorority life exposé Dirty Rush take things too far?

$
0
0

In her book released last week, Bell has turned her true-life rushing experience at Central Delaware University into a fictional novel in which the lead character (Taylor) must choose to fulfill her family's legacy of pledging Beta Zeta or stick with being independent.

Taylor is attacked at her first party by BZ sisters, to whom she is a celebrity. They introduce her to the Greek life and don't give her much of a choice in the pledging department. Taylor is basically "one of them" from the get-go, no matter how much she might shy away from the attention.

More: Miss America so nasty even her own sorority didn't want her

Dirty Rush by Taylor Bell

Soon, she's just one of the girls, but Beta Zeta hides secrets even Taylor can't believe, which leads to the catty drama that surrounds most alcohol-induced 18-year-old female friendships.

I attended Ohio University, normally ranked among the top 20 party schools in the country. I was basically drunk for four years, and I still hold the record for most make-outs in one night (seven; thank you). In other words, I was That Party Girl who Jell-O wrestled and easily earned the most beads every Mardi Gras.

But here are my caveats. One: I never joined a sorority. Two: I'm now "old" at 32. Add these items together and they may explain why Bell's book was hard to swallow, sort of like a shot of 151.

More: Jennifer Garner and 30 other celebrities in sororities

Although there were certainly moments of humor (one involving anal beads), the dialogue and behavior of the characters in Dirty Rush made the book hard to fathom. Suspension of disbelief only goes so far. And I asked around. I emailed all my Greek girlfriends and read them excerpts, and even they were disturbed.

If you can make it through the unrealistic dialogue, you might get into the true "conflict" of the novel, which is pretty good. We all like seeing evil bitches get punished, but you have to first wade through immature parties and annoying characters. But again, maybe I'm just too dang old to get it.

More: How Sorority Sisters is portraying women in a negative light

Oh, something else to consider: Taylor Bell doesn't actually exist. Although she has a full bio on the book, she's really just a made-up person created by Tanner and David Oliver Cohen of the Twitter account White Girl Problems. Surprise!

Anyway, I shudder to think who Tanner and David's audience actually is. It can't be adults, and if it's high school girls, I don't want them going to college expecting that the behavior portrayed in Dirty Rush is the acceptable norm. I don't want high school girls thinking sex with lots of "cool guys" makes them cool or that all the hot chicks pop fistfuls of Adderall.

College is about friendship and connection and — oh! Remember? Education! Maybe Dirty Rush is written for the college crowd? In that case, I guess it'll get some laughs and occasional nods of understanding.

I do understand that Dirty Rush is a love letter to Greek life and the great friends Taylor made as a member of Beta Zeta. I'm glad her character found her place at college and a supportive circle of friends.

But Taylor might be right when she says non-Greeks just can't understand. I can't imagine going through all the bullshit she went through to be part of a select group. So, I guess Dirty Rush's audience is members of Greek life, and hey, as is written, "College is insane."

Big Women: Big Love — Everything that's wrong (and right) about it

$

I can't say that I'm on the fence about this series because, even with its faults, I do love it. But there are also some things (and some people) I wish the show would get rid of.

More: Little Women's Terra Jole on the heartbreaking truth about her pregnancy

What I love:

The girls (well, most of them)

What I liked right away about this series was all (OK, almost all) of the ladies it features. There were a couple whose attitudes I wasn't sure I would like at first, but overall, I've enjoyed hanging out with all of them as they've gone on their dates. Most of them are gals that I could totally see having as best friends, and that makes a huge difference when deciding what TV shows I want to watch. I mean, who wants to watch chicks they can't stand?

An honest look at dating online

I feel OK admitting that I've tried online dating, and I can tell you from personal experience that it's just as insane as they depict it on the show. The truth is that online dating is a total crapshoot. You never know who's going to walk through the door when all you know about your potential date is what they've posted on their online profile. I love seeing that I'm not the only one having some terrible experiences in the online dating game.

Plus-size empowerment

There have been a lot of TV series about dating and finding romance, but I can't think of a single one where plus-size people were featured. So it's great to see a show acknowledging that it's not just the skinny model-sized people who are getting out there in the dating world. Being overweight doesn't stop you from dating unless you let it, and I think there's a lot of plus-sized people who might be feeling more confident about themselves by watching the ladies on the show struggle through being single.

More: Whitney, the Lifetime biopic, "dishonors" Whitney Houston

No fetishes, please

When I saw that Lifetime was creating a show about plus-sized people dating, I have to admit that I cringed inwardly a little bit. As a plus-sized woman, I've dealt with guys who treat overweight girls as some kind of fetish, and I hoped that the show wasn't going to feature people like that. Luckily, all the girls agree with me, and guys who have shown that kind of behavior have also been shown the door.

What I hate:

Jessica

Remember that I said I liked almost all the girls? Well, Jessica is not on that list. She's so hate-able, I almost need another word to describe her. Just because she lost a lot of weight, suddenly she thinks she's queen of the world. I have no problem with her losing weight and being proud of it — that's an awesome thing. But when she called the rest of the ladies "heifers," I was ready to smack a bitch. It's hilarious to me that she has such hatred for plus-sized women when she herself is still really large, despite her weight loss. I'm guessing she hates herself and just takes it out on the other girls, which is truly sad. The fact that she keeps actively going after men who make it clear that they will only date her if she's skinny also sickens me to no end. Wouldn't you want a guy in your life who loves you for you and not for what size your body is? Seriously, I could go on talking about her all day.

The blind dates

Even with my personal experience in the online dating world, some of the guys these girls have gone out with are downright frightening. Poor Jenn has gotten more than her fair share. First, she had the jerk at the bowling alley who alternately lusted after her and made fun of her weight. I couldn't tell if the guy had a fat fetish or if he was just an idiot. Then there was the one at the go-kart track who started the date by declaring he was going to beat her down on the track. Oh yes, and let's not forget the guy who was already drinking before the date started and was so drunk he dropped a beer in the bar.

More: 5 Reasons Little Women: LA will be your summer must-watch

The mixed message of the show

Sometimes when I'm watching this series, I can't tell if the message is supposed to be that women should feel good about themselves and go out there and date no matter what size they are or if it's that dating as a plus-size woman sucks and you need to be skinny in order to have a fulfilling relationship. I think most of the mixed messages come from having someone like Jessica on the show, and I can only hope that she decides to leave. I truly think the show would be more fun and have a better message without her there to spout off her poisonous thoughts. But hey, what do I know?

Abigail Breslin tries to school haters on cyberbullying but gets attacked (PHOTOS)

Even after looking at the lengthy amount of tweets she's made in the past 12 hours, it isn't exactly clear why Breslin got so frustrated with the the blogosphere's overwhelming amount of trolls and vicious words, especially from girls, but she did.

Things started when Breslin confessed to her followers that she'll never understand the age-old question, "Why can't girls just support other girls?" She explained that she's lucky to be surrounded by some strong female companionship, but all the mean-spirited words women exchange between one another really need to stop. We totally support her message, but for Breslin, it would have probably been best to maybe send out a few vent tweets and walk away from her phone. Instead, the actress fell into the trap that the haters thrive on, and that's all about giving them attention. Plus, we didn't even mention Breslin's subtle shade toward Taylor Swift in December.

As you might have already guessed, Breslin's words sparked a rather bold response from her fan base, which resulted in an even greater response from the actress. While some supported her thoughts, others were quick to slam the actress and even brought up her diss song "You Suck," which she released late last year and which was reportedly directed at her 5SOS ex-boyfriend, Michael Clifford. Breslin defended her stance, calling the record a "joke song." However, at that point, Clifford even got into the mix, tweeting to Breslin and telling her that he didn't find the track funny. Ouch!

If anything, Breslin's rant went full throttle after the unexpected response from Clifford. She tried to specify that her rant isn't a "girl" hate rant but instead a human hate rant, but she then brought up the cult classic Mean Girls. We get what you mean, Abigail, but you can't say this isn't a girl-on-girl issue and bring up a film that completely centers around adolescent female drama.

After a ton of replies and retweets, Breslin concluded her blowout by telling her followers that she does do her research and visits the accounts of some of these people only to see "how young and beautiful and smart" all of them seem to be. "Don't ruin that by taking cheap shots," she said before wishing everyone a good night.

It might be just a little too early for all of this Twitter aftermath on a Sunday morning.

Throngs of people took to social media to express concern over Rancic's weight as she covered the awards show from the red carpet. Admittedly, I was one of them.

But for every fan who was genuinely worried (like me) about the E! News correspondent, there seemed to be five more haters who viciously attacked Rancic's weight — pointing out her protruding collarbone and sinewy arms.

In the wake of the event, we can't imagine how Rancic must have felt.

It's hard enough to hear one person make a derogatory comment about you, much less thousand of people. Honestly, I don't blame the star if the body-shaming inspired her to be a no-show at this year's SAG Awards.

And perhaps she chose not to attend in order to make a statement that she truly doesn't have to deal with that kind of hateful criticism. It seems telling that she posted a casual picture to Instagram a few days ago with the caption, "No place to be. Nowhere to go. #thegoodlife."

Giuliana Rancic post

Giuliana Rancic post

I mean, let's get real for a minute — the red carpet simply wasn't the same without her. For me, in fact, it was pretty dreadful without her. Sure, she has her awkward moments like anyone, but she is endearing and warm and seems to share a genuine rapport with the stars she's interviewing.

More: Giuliana Rancic knows the secret to having a perfect life/work balance (VIDEO)

Maria Menounos gave it a good shot, but she had some big (and fancy, natch) shoes to fill. She flailed a bit, perhaps due to nerves or to the pressure of living up to Rancic.

Which leads to another potential reason Rancic wasn't at the show this year. Could it be that it wasn't her choice at all, but rather a deliberate decision by E!?

Since Menounos made the move from Extra to E! last summer, rumors have circulated that the claws are out between the new hire and the veteran Rancic. (An E! rep denies any bad blood.)

More: Maria Menounos is leaving Extra, going to E!

According to Confidenti@l, Rancic originally planned not to renew her last contract — but decided to do so last-minute after going through the heartbreak of her surrogate suffering a miscarriage. Menounos, who was allegedly hired as Rancic's potential replacement, likely had her sights set on the top E! News anchor spot.

With so much hysteria surrounding Rancic's appearance at the Golden Globes, we wonder if the network could, in fact, be testing the waters for Menounos to take over as lead.

Whatever Rancic's reason for not rocking her usual red carpet coverage, though, we hope it gets resolved before the Grammys on Feb. 8 and — my goodness — certainly before the Oscars on Feb. 22.

It's just not the same without you, G!

More: 7 Times women were asked shallow questions on the Golden Globes red carpet

The hashtag #AskHerMore was started last year by the Representation Project in an effort to get reporters on red carpets to focus less on what actresses are wearing and more on their achievements and their work — you know, the kind of questions men routinely get asked on red carpets.

And while we could certainly see some improvement from interviewers at this year's SAG Awards red carpet, it's apparent we still have a long way to go. Here are 12 times tonight we wished interviewers had made more of an effort to #AskHerMore.

When the interview with Laverne Cox focused on her "bangin' body" and nails

Laverne Cox

Laverne Cox

Cox may be bringing a lot of attention to issues faced by the trans community, and she may be a part of a show that has changed the television landscape, but what we really want to know about is her nail polish brand of choice.

Every single time an actress was asked to do the mani cam instead of being asked about her performance

Mani cam

Mani cam

We have a wonderful idea: Less mani cam, more legitimate questions.

More: See all the 2015 SAG Award winners here live!

The constant mentions of Brad Goreski

Brad Goreski

Brad Goreski

There was added incentive for E! to mention Brad Goreski's name whenever they knew an actress they were interviewing had been styled by him. However, it's one thing that all the ladies get asked incessantly about who they're wearing — do we really need to start hearing about their stylists as well? How about we ask them about their work instead?

The unfortunate stream of questions for Natalie Dormer

Natalie Dormer

Natalie Dormer

"What are you wearing? Can we do a mani cam on you? Tell us about your jewelry. I hear you like to wear designers that are based in London. Is that true?" There was also, "Do you enjoy award shows? Are they fun for you? Are you going to party or do you have to get back on a plane?" Probing questions, these are not.

Pretty much Taryn Manning's whole interview

Taryn Manning

Taryn Manning

Yep, it was great that Manning was able to mention the Lifetime movie she worked on where she played one of the Cleveland kidnapping victims. What wasn't so great was Ross Mathews' segue after Manning finished speaking: "I can't wait to see you bring that story to life and tell that amazing story. We're going to catch up, talk a little more fashion and fun, and throw it back to Maria."

And Amanda Peet's entire interview

Amanda Peet

Amanda Peet

Amanda Peet was introduced as the star of Togetherness and as the wife of the creator of Game of Thrones. Then, instead of being asked about her work, she had to spend the entire interview talking about Game of Thrones.

More: Giuliana Rancic skips SAG Awards — why her haters may be to blame

The first question Julianne Moore was asked after "Who are you wearing?"

Julianne Moore

Julianne Moore

To be fair, Moore was eventually asked about her performance in Still Alice and what it's doing for Alzheimer's sufferers. It's just sad that before she got to speak about that, she was asked, "Obviously it's hot, but are you excited to be here today?" We can't imagine she would say she wasn't excited to be there.

When Keira Knightley was asked about her pregnancy

Keira 2

Keira 2

Yes, baby bumps are always the talk of the red carpet, and we think it's a little sad. Surely, there are more interesting things to ask Keira Knightley in relation to the SAG Awards, even, than "Does being pregnant make it harder?"

Every time a Modern Family cast member was asked about Sofía and Joe

Sofia

Sofia

Oh, we get the fascination, but we just don't understand why every Modern Family cast member was asked to comment on their relationship. To be fair, this wasn't specific to the female cast members; Rico Rodriguez was also asked for his thoughts (Ty Burrell wasn't, though). But how about Sofía and Joe get asked about Sofía and Joe and everyone else gets asked about themselves?

When Emma Stone, a first-time Oscar nominee, was not asked about being a first-time Oscar nominee

Emma Stone

Emma Stone

She was, however, asked a lot about who she was wearing, if she gets nervous performing when there is a famous person in the audience and about that infamous photobomb. But no mention of the Oscar nomination or the role that garnered said nomination.

When Maggie Gyllenhaal was asked about her brother

Maggie

Maggie

Maggie Gyllenhaal was nominated for a SAG Award for her performance in The Honorable Woman. She happened to win a Golden Globe for the same performance. But rather than being asked to talk about that, she was asked if she was bummed her brother, Jake, didn't get an Oscar nomination, and now all anybody can talk about is what she said about him and the fact she used the word "meritocracy" while doing so. Shouldn't we be talking about her performance, though?

When Rashida Jones was told she looked tanned

Rashida

Rashida

Um, yeah, that happened. A little less island getaway, a little more "I am actually always this color."

ARIES (March 20-April 19)

The more something is kept out of reach, the harder you'll fight for it. It's what comes from being born under the most heroic sign of the zodiac. But there are times when the planets show that there's a good reason why a certain someone is unavailable and it's more than just him playing hard to get. Venus and Mars are traveling through the most mysterious and potentially deceptive part of your solar horoscope which means that you don't know the full story behind the guy that you're attracted to. It's a story worth unearthing before going further.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

We all have certain past "relationships" we'd rather not talk about. Maybe it's that regrettable one night stand or maybe it's the one night stand that went on 13 months longer than it should have. Be forewarned that this fellow will be circling back into your social orbit this week. He may know someone who knows the guy you're seeing or he's buddies with a pal of yours at work. It would be wise to put your best spin on things. That way if he goes negative, then people will see him as the sore loser and not you.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

This would not be a good time to play games. That's what you tend to do whenever you feel overlooked. In truth he'd much prefer to give you all the love and attention you deserve, but Saturn heavy in his horoscope points to other demands on his time. Be supportive and give him his space. And remember that just because he can't go out doesn't mean you have to be under house arrest. Go out with friends this weekend. It's been a long time since you hit the town and there's a lot of catching up to do.

CANCER (June 21-July 21)

It's hard to feel romantic when you feel like you're walking on eggshells with the man in your life. Most people would advise making your own fun — and that could take care of things in the moment — but you still have to deal with him. What can be done? Treat him like a knotted muscle. He's feeling tense and likely to bark at anything. Respond by lowering stress levels and putting out those negative ion energy particles that people born under Cancer are famous for. This will get him to unwind, relax and act like a human being again.

LEO (July 22-Aug. 22)

It's difficult to gauge how you come across to others during that time of year when the sun (your ruler) is in your opposite sign of Aquarius. Aquarius sits six signs away from you on the zodiacal wheel and this is when you're likely to feel underwhelming, uninspiring and just plain flat. This could lead you to withdraw or worse — to overcompensate by pumping up the volume on everything you do. Take it easy and go with the flow. You're just as charismatic as always even if it doesn't feel that way. The pall will lift on Feb. 17.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Why can't you say something positive? That's the question you'll be asked by loved ones and friends when Venus forms a square to Saturn on Jan. 30. It's hard being born under the most critical sign of the zodiac. It's your job to point out the faults and foibles in people's thinking so that they don't set themselves up for disappointment, but there's more to criticism than poking holes in people's ideas and visions. You must be prepared to help them to make something of what they have. This is when criticism becomes constructive instead of prohibitive.

This is why people accuse Libras of being unable to make up their minds, but what it really comes from is trying to do what's best for the relationship. Perhaps you're creating more work for yourself? Focus on your side of the fence, let him worry about his, and somehow you'll work out the proper give and take.

You hate to play the heavy but you'll have no choice when Venus falls afoul of Saturn on Jan. 30. It's your nature to give people what they want. It comes from being born under Jupiter, the most benevolent planet of astrology. However, it's clear that a loved one is being too demanding and that if you don't draw the line then this person will drain you dry. Do what needs to be done. However, you'll learn about a hidden complication on Jan. 30. You have the Venus/Saturn square to thank for sprinkling flies in the ointment. However, Mercury retrograde is also famous for re-introducing past flames into your life — and in the most unexpected way. Such a thing could happen to you on Jan. 30. However, the planet isn't all that discriminating and given your enormous capacity for empathy and understanding, you could find yourself pulling in a host of users and takers. Figure skater Ashley Wagner responds to critics who said she couldn't win

The veteran figure skater did so by winning the U.S. Figure Skating Championship title — and while it's her third, it's arguably her most meaningful.

More: 10 Mighty women every girl should know

"This, of my three titles, this one tastes the sweetest. This is the one that means the most to me because this is the one that shows every single person that doubts me, every single person that says I'm too old, every single person that says I am not capable of being a leading lady," she said.

And, really, how fantastic is that?

This year's championship was held Saturday night in Greensboro, North Carolina, and was rife with talent, including Wagner and two other 2014 Olympians.

Thanks to a stunning routine, Gardner shut down the competition with a score of 221.02 — silver medalist Gracie Gold trailed by a considerable gap with 205.4.

More: 15 Inspiring movie quotes from strong female characters

Not only was Gardner's score the highest score for a woman at a U.S. championships event, but it also made her the oldest figure skater to snag the championship title since Michelle Kwan — then 24 years old — in 2005.

The win marked a beautiful upswing for Wagner, who turned in a fourth-place performance last year at the U.S. Championships. (Still impressive to us!)

Combined with Wagner's record-breaking score of 148.98 in Saturday's free skate program and the highest score in Thursday night's short program, this win makes it crystal clear that you just can't put an age limit on true talent.

Or, as Wagner so eloquently put it, "This shows them that they need to shut their mouths and watch me skate."

Cop has his girlfriend pulled over for a life-changing traffic stop

He was really part of a romantic, elaborate scheme orchestrated by Wolff's boyfriend Gregory Parris, another police officer on the force.

Specifically, Parris had his fellow cop pull Wolff over so he could propose to her. And the whole thing was caught on a police dash cam.

"They both deserve Academy Awards," Wolff told KHOU-TV.

The fake traffic stop proposal began with the first officer pulling up behind Wolff, lights flashing. He came to her window and told her she was driving with a broken tail light. After he ran her license through the system, he said she also had outstanding warrants.

"Are you serious?" a shocked Wolff asks, getting out of the car and starting to cry. "What are the warrants for?" A lieutenant then arrives to help and says he's calling for backup. He is really calling Parris to swoop in for the grand finale.

"He said, 'Do you want her in handcuffs?' and I said, 'No, don't put her in handcuffs,'" Parris said.

Parris then drives up like a knight in shining armor to rescue his princess. He hops out of his patrol car and gets down on one knee before Wolff, who is even more stunned than she was before.

"He said, 'Sara Jane Wolff, will you be my wife?'" she told the station. She quickly said yes — luckily.

"She might have gone to jail otherwise," joked Parris.

The couple are planning a July wedding. And though Parris said he was "very nervous" the day of the proposal, his now fiancée couldn't be happier with how he chose to pop the question.

"I can't imagine being proposed to any better than that," Wolff told KHOU. "It was perfect for us."

How a man asks his future wife to marry him says a lot about the kind of husband he'll be. A creative, well-thought-out proposal like this one suggests Parris will be a fun, romantic spouse who is full of surprises — the kind of guy who will handle special occasions with finesse and be good at planning rather than throwing things together at the last minute. And those are all important qualities for a happy marriage. We wish them well!

Naturally competitive, you enjoy a good battle of the wits and wills. These sparring matches are really more sporting than they are anything else. However, Pluto at the top of your solar horoscope can escalate things without you knowing it, so that what starts out as good-natured ribbing devolves into something provocative and hostile. On Jan. 30, take a moment to check in that the people laughing with you really are laughing with you, and that they’re not looking around for a blunt instrument to clobber you with. Most people would throw up their hands and storm off, but what would be the point? Chances are that the disappointment you feel is shared by the other party as well. Stay positive and upbeat. You’re drumming up all kinds of excuses for putting off making that all-important phone call. Nobody really knows why people born under Pisces have such a difficult time taking action. Your penchant for procrastination makes Hamlet look like a multitasker. It would be a good idea to seize the day on Jan. 30. Wait any longer and this opportunity will pass you by.

How Viola Davis, in under two minutes, moved SAG viewers to tears (VIDEO)

Accepting the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for her role on the gripping show, Davis was visibly choked up. And then, in less than two minutes, she completely blew us away.

She started her speech by sharing a sweet, personal look into her life at home.

"When I tell my daughter stories at night, a few things inevitably happen. No. 1, I use my imagination," she said. "I always start with life and then I build from there. And then the other thing that happens is she always says, 'Mommy, can you put me in the story?' And, you know, it starts from the top up."

How true! As the mother of a daughter the same age as Davis's, I love that sentiment — little girls need women who look like them and sound like them and who are them on screen to help spark their own imaginations and envision their future stories.

The creative minds behind How to Get Away With Murder undoubtedly helped launch many dreams with Davis's character, prompting the actress to offer up her gratitude. "So I'd like to thank Paul Lee, Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers, Bill De'Elia and Peter Nowalk for thinking that a sexualized, messy, mysterious woman could be a 49-year-old dark-skinned African American woman who looks like me," she said.

Her words? Moving. The raw vulnerability Davis brings to the role? Brilliant. Exhibit A, this powerful scene:

Or Exhibit B (and my personal favorite), this gut-wrenching moment when Annalise strips off the facade society expects of her. Literally.

Clearly, Davis — who won a SAG award in 2011 for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for The Help — has a wonderful knack for bringing to life characters that challenge the way audiences view outspoken women and, particularly, women of color.

In closing her speech, the actress sent out a heartfelt thanks to a few very special supporters.

"Thank you to all the people who love me exactly how God made me," she said, "and that's my beautiful husband, Julius, my 4-year-old daughter at home, Genesis, and my mother, Mae Alice Davis."

We love you too, Davis, exactly how God made you — fearfully, wonderfully and completely inspiring to us all.

2015 SAG Awards: OITNB proved women are taking over Hollywood (VIDEO)

In fact, they kind of hijacked the whole award show, if you ask us... and we mean that in the best way possible. Need convincing? Here's a quick rundown of all the reasons OITNB dominated the SAGs.

More: 2015 SAG Awards: See all the winners here live!

1. Lin Tucci's hilarious red carpet antics

In addition to totally hamming it up for photographers on the red carpet, Lin Tucci won our hearts with the cheeky interview she gave to People.com. In response to being told she looked lovely this evening, the actress — who plays Anita DeMarco, one of Piper's (Taylor Schilling) first cellies, on OITNB — told TNT correspondent Danielle Demski, "You do, too. You need to be my prison wife!" Still. Laughing.

2. Danielle Brooks spilling deets on her and Uzo Aduba's slumber party

While chatting with E! correspondent Maria Menounos on the red carpet, Danielle Brooks (aka Tasha "Taystee" Jefferson) couldn't stop singing the praises of her co-star Uzo Aduba. Telling Menounos how much she adores Aduba, Brooks revealed that she'd just had her sweet co-star over for a girls' night and that she was truly rooting for her to win. Can we guest on the show? 'Cause we want these gals for pals.

3. Tatiana Maslany's OITNB crush

There's just something about Uzo! Interviewing Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany, Menounos said, "Of course, I'm not the only one crushing on you. A lot of people are crushing on you, including Uzo Aduba from Orange Is the New Black." To which, without skipping a beat, Maslany replied, "Well, I'm crushing on her. I think I crushed on her first, so it's mutual — it's great. She's amazing. She's such a strong actor. She plays such a huge character with such grounded truth to it. And she's hilarious. I really love her."

4. Laverne Cox, y'all

Laverne Cox could be seen all over the SAG Awards coverage tonight. From strutting her fabulous stuff in satin on the red carpet to presenting an award alongside her adorable OITNB costar Matt McGorry, Cox captivated us every minute she snagged some screen time.

5. Aduba's opening reel spiel

The whole "I'm an actor" opening reel at the SAG Awards wasn't our favorite part of the night, by any means, but Aduba was certainly one of the bit's redeeming qualities. "I originally auditioned for the imprisoned track star, but they told me I was not quite right for the part — even though I ran track in college," she said of OITNB, laughing. "Instead, they said, 'We think you might be right for the part of the slightly off-kilter, mildly obsessive Crazy Eyes.'" Ha ha, classic. And, may we say, they were right!

6. Aduba nabbing the first win of the night

I mean, really. Could this woman be any more amazing? When the stunning Orange Is the New Black star took the stage to accept the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series, she gave an emotional and gracious speech that moved her, us and many of her co-stars (did you see Lea DeLaria, aka Big Boo, bawling in the audience?) to tears.

"I want to thank Jenji Kohan for writing a show like this and putting something like this on television, not just for myself but for our incredible team of actors to be seen in such a beautiful way," she said of the show, in which she plays the inimitable part of Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren. Aduba also gushed about her co-stars, "without whom this is not possible." Aww!

7. OITNB packs the stage with powerful women for their ensemble win

OITNB 3

OITNB 3

Another big moment for the binge-worthy show came when the award was announced for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, and they landed top honors. As Aduba (wo)manned the mic for the second time of the night to thank SAG and the show's creators, her co-stars formed a formidable huddle around her. And, my God, the sight of so many talented women — Aduba, Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, Natasha Lyonne, Dascha Polanco, Taryn Manning, Lolita Foster, Jessica Pimental, Lea DeLaria, Vicky Jeudy and more — on stage at once seriously took our breath away.

8. Aduba fangirling over Viola Davis and other peers

It's always so moving to hear actors speak highly of one another, and Aduba is a master of doling out praise for her peers. In the press room following her wins, she pointed to another woman making history with her win: Viola Davis. "[She's] been incredible and an inspiration and a reflection of what it is that one can achieve if they remain disciplined in their craft," she said.

OITNB 1

OITNB 1

She also gushed about Julianne Moore, Meryl Streep and Bryan Cranston — all actors, along with Davis, who Aduba has "loved and [has] found so tremendous in their performances and their ability to craft. It's been thrilling."

An open letter to the Oscars: SAG Awards could teach you a thing about diversity

$

0

There's been a lot of rightful discussion recently about your failure to acknowledge a number of deserving artists in this year's list of Oscar nominations — and the common denominator among those who were overlooked is that they are not white.

As it stands, John Legend is the only African-American to have received a nomination — in the Best Original Song category for the movie, Selma. And while Selma received a nomination for Best Picture, it didn't fare so well in any of the acting categories or the directing category. How is it possible that a movie can be deemed Oscar-worthy, yet the person responsible for commanding the movie — the director, an African-American woman in this case, Ava DuVernay — and the people who performed in it are not deemed Oscar-worthy? This just doesn't make any sense to us. It seems almost laughable that David Oyelowo, who played Martin Luther King Jr. in the movie — a man who fought tirelessly for equality and race recognition — wasn't recognized for his performance.

More: 2 Reasons Selma's Ava DuVernay may have been snubbed by The Academy

The only positive to take from this oversight is that we're not the only people who are perplexed by this unfortunate and concerning snubbery. The complete lack of diversity among those in the running for an award on show business' night of nights sparked the hashtag, #OscarsSoWhite, to trend on Twitter.

While people globally were expressing their dismay at the glaring oversights, the Academy's president, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, an African-American woman, stood in contrast to these opinions, saying, "the good news is that the wealth of talent is there, and it's being discussed, and it's helpful so much for talent — whether in front of the camera or behind the camera — to have this recognition, to have this period of time where there is a lot of publicity, a lot of chitter-chatter."

What recognition is she referring to? Because the Academy certainly didn't see fit to provide the "wealth of talent" with any such recognition this year.

You know who did? The SAG Awards. This year, Uzo Aduba and Viola Davis made SAG Awards history in that both lead actress categories were won by African-American actresses. Davis spoke to race in her acceptance speech, noting that the ability of someone like her — a 49-year-old dark-skinned African-American woman — to be a part of the stories we see on television "starts from the top up."

While you, the Academy, might like to see yourselves as "the top," it's clear you have such a long way to go. At this point in time, SAG has you well and truly beaten. While SAG is making history for the right reasons, the Academy is shaping news headlines for the wrong ones. The SAG Awards, voted on solely by actors, has shown us where those who bring film and television to life place value. Why has the Academy not done the same with its Oscar nominations this year?

Our message to you, the Academy, is this: Not only can you do better, but you have to do better. A lot more than a statuette is at stake here. The entertainment industry should strive to be a diverse industry, intent on representing all kinds of people — male, female, LGBT, Caucasian, African-American, Hispanic, Asian and a whole gamut of other races we are yet to see effectively represented on the big and small screens — not only because of the obvious financial incentives that come with giving viewers the opportunity to watch things that reflect who they know themselves to be. But the entertainment industry should see this representation of people of all walks of life as its responsibility.

What we see in the movies and the television shows we watch has the power to shape and change perceptions, perceptions that are often incorrect and misunderstood. The entertainment industry has a pivotal role to play in closing the gap that currently exists in relation to issues of race, gender and sexuality, among others.

More: Oscar nominations: 7 Women the Academy failed to acknowledge

The Academy should be at the forefront of this mission, not lagging far behind it. If the Oscars are truly going to own the title of Hollywood's most coveted and prestigious award, then you have an obligation to set yourselves apart from the rest by encouraging, promoting and rewarding diversity, rather than failing to acknowledge it at all. We hope you'll get it right when it's time for 2016's Oscar nominations.

1. Once upon a time while on vacay with the fam, James met Kirk Cameron and Candace Cameron Bure, who invited him to visit them in Los Angeles.

Was this what sparked his eventual move into acting? Hmmm...

2. He majored in broadcast journalism at Oklahoma State University.

james marsden gif

After almost two years, he decided to move to L.A. to pursue an acting career (and women of the world rejoiced).

3. He was originally offered the lead role in 54, which later went to Ryan Phillippe.

james marsden gif

Let's imagine that for a minute...

4. He's quite the singer.

james marsden gif

GIF credit: Giphy.com

He sang two songs in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Hairspray, he sang a duet with Amy Adams in Enchanted, and who can forget his drunken rendition of "Bennie and the Jets" in 27 Dresses?

5. He once worked as a Versace model.

Annnd I'm spent.

6. He has three kids.

james marsden gif

Two sons and one daughter, to be exact.

7. He doesn't do mediocrity.

In a Men's Health interview, he said: "I hate being mediocre. If I really want to learn something, I immerse myself in it. That consumes every ounce of my thoughts until I'm really good at it."

8. He also doesn't do first class.

james marsden gif

Nope, James flies coach while traveling with his family. He feels he has a responsibility to let his kids know he isn't special because of what he does, but who he is as a person. Swoon.

9. Get ready to have your mind blown: The character of Griffin on Party of Five was originally played by James.

Yep. How about them apples?

10. He auditioned for the role of Brian Fantana in Anchorman.

But we're much happier with James as Jack Lime, Ron Burgundy's adversary in Anchorman 2 — since you know, James and Paul Rudd in the same movie is everything.

11. His latest flick, The Loft, drops Jan. 30.

The Loft James Marsden

I'm so excited for this movie. One, see above. (Dayuuum.) Two, I realized I've actually been patiently waiting for this movie to come out for years.

Before binge-watching was as common as breathing, I managed to watch every episode of Prison Break, starring Wentworth Miller, in a single weekend (and by managed, I mean so-hooked-I-had-no-choice-in-the-matter). Afterward, during my severe Wentworth Miller withdrawal, I did what any self-respecting woman would do: I creeped his IMDB profile to find out what he was working on next — and stumbled across The Loft.

When I checked out the cast list and found out James was starring in it too, I was all...

Let's just say I already have my seat picked out at the movie theater.

12. And finally...
