15 Cocktail trends you must try in 2015

$

In some areas, that will move us into new and exciting directions. In others, we'll reach back to the past for a nostalgic sip. Whether you prefer simple and refined or complex and sophisticated, there's a little something for everyone on your mixologist's radar.

1. Gin

Due to the rise in popularity of old-fashioned drinks, gin will be back at the top of the list. I like the new Nolet's Silver Dry Gin. Lower in the piney flavor associated with most gins, the flavors of peach, rose and raspberry make this gin easily sippable and perfect for a more refined cocktail.

2. Italian stallions

Look for several traditional Italian liquors to see a resurgence as the result of people's more adventurous palates. Sambuca, amaro, Aperol, Campari and more will be making a comeback.

3. Ice chunks

Ice is supposed to chill your drink, not water it down. Higher-end bars have been chipping ice right off the block for a while, but look for large-chunk ice to pop up everywhere. They may even be fun shapes or have drink-complementary flavors frozen inside. I've been using these Tovolo King Cube ice trays for everything from whiskey cocktails to ice tea. (Amazon, $8)

4. Medieval brews

If you're a hop hater, 2015 may be your year. Craft brewers are on track to start exploring medieval brew styles that use gruits instead of hops. Gruit herbs are things like yarrow (flowers and stems), marsh or wild rosemary and more. If you're a home brewer, check out the unhopped recipes over at Gruit Ale, or just try New Belgium's Gruit ale.

5. Pitch-black cocktails

Charcoal is soon to be one of the hottest cooking trends, so it's hardly a surprise it will also take over the high-end cocktail world.

6. Whiskey

Gone are the days when we bow to the clear, flavorless god vodka. We'll be moving away from focusing on the flavor of mixers and into how the mixer plays with the distinct flavors of various liquors, especially whiskey. But American whiskey's heyday is over for now. In 2015, focus on the smooth warmth of Canadian rye whiskeys, whiskeys aged in flavored casks and more.

7. Herbs

Look for herbal liqueurs this year, but you also shouldn't stray away from using fresh herbs in your brews. It's more than just mojitos when it comes to muddling, garnishing, flavoring simple syrups and more.

8. Nostalgic cocktails make a comeback

Don't be surprised to see a host of famous cocktails from days gone by. The old-fashioned and cosmo are already on everyone's radar, but look for other retro favorites, like the Pimm's Cup, the sage advice, Mama's little helper and more.

9. Local, local, local

That whole farm-to-table thing didn't end at food, people. We're all growing weary of paying top dollar for homogenized brews and vinos from the big boys who clearly spend more on advertising than expertise. Look for local growers who are turning their crops into wines, beers and even liquors.

10. Moonshine

This has been popping up on liquor store shelves throughout 2014, but it's usually purchased as a novelty item or gift. Distillers are getting creative now, putting out high-quality, flavored moonshine in bottles so gorgeous you'll have to keep them to make your own. Don't be surprised to see these incorporated into well-crafted cocktails in 2015.

12. High tea

Baileys and coffee is so early 2000s. This year, we'll be mixing exotic teas with even more exotic aperitifs or just plain old liquor. Try green tea with Aperol (see Italian liquors trend above) or jasmine tea and gin.

13. Tequila!

Tequila never exactly goes out of style — especially with the party crowd — but look for specialty and flavored tequilas this year.

14. Punches

This throwback to the early 1900s (and spiked punch at prom) will be making a comeback this year, often in place of signature cocktails at parties.

15. Sugar is out

In the past, there's been a serious focus on sugary-sweet drinks, but moving forward, bartenders will likely opt for darker, spicier flavors in taller drinks.

Target steps up their plus-size game with a whole new line

What about the plus-size women?

Back in August, curvy fashion blogger Chastity Garner finally had enough. She took a stance when Target launched their Altuzarra collection which, true to form, left out the plus-size range. She vowed to boycott Target and end what she called her abusive relationship with the retailer.

Well, Target took that to heart. Today they announced AVA & VIV, a beautiful new line designed for plus-size women by their in-house team of designers. And it's not just a one-time thing. The line will refresh monthly and will include items that range from $10 to $80.

The best part? Chastity Garner was one of three plus-size fashion bloggers invited to preview the line and offer her feedback on designs still in the works for fall. All three ladies will be featured in the look book for the collection, and if this video tells us anything, it's that they are thrilled.

This new line will be available mid-February through March and available to purchase online Feb. 22. The look book is set to 'air' Jan. 22.

Husband films crying pregnant wife: 'Why are you making fun of me?' (VIDEO)

Pregnant wife crying

Pregnant wife crying

Yes, not all pregnancy stereotypes are true, and many women don't appreciate them. But I, for one, can tell you that most pregnancy clichés rang true for me, especially the raging hormones and the mood swings. For nine long months, I was not myself. I found myself getting irrationally angry, followed by some ugly crying, at the smallest things.

This adorable viral video made me feel better about my wild pregnancy moods. Kevin Reams captured pregnancy drama at its finest. He filmed his nine-month-pregnant wife in a funny clip that has now gone viral, with over one million views.

In the video, you can see an all-too-common pregnancy scenario play out. Husband and pregnant wife banter. Pregnant wife gets frustrated and doesn't know how to communicate her feelings. Pregnant wife cries for no reason at all. Husband laughs and is reprimanded for it.

As Kevin and his wife are performing a normal household task of separating vegetables into Ziploc bags to store, Kevin's pregnant wife begins cry-laughing because she doesn't like his vegetable packing method.

All Kevin can do is laugh, which prompts his wife to say, "Why are you making fun of me?" Kevin's wife cries harder as she laments that people will remember her crazy pregnant mood swings forever — which might now be true because of this viral video.

Boy, have I been there before, in both of my pregnancies. Some may say that Kevin is a bag of douche for filming his wife at a sensitive time in her life, but through her tears, it seems like she has a decent sense of humor. If my husband had ever filmed me one of the many, many times I was caught in a pregnant she-bear rage, you'd better believe I would have laughed about it later.

Most women don't like pregnancy stereotypes because they are true. Pregnant women be crazy. Pregnant women say the darndest things. Pregnant women are unpredictable. This cute video captures pregnancy insanity perfectly.

2015 Kitchen Designs 1

This year, it's time to bid adieu to the chrome and brushed nickel of your past. Kitchens everywhere are expected to be popping up bronze. And we're not just talking faucets — kitchen accessories are also likely to be replaced by a lovely bronzed hue. If you're not completely sold on the idea, maybe we can change your mind with this gorgeous copper-colored Kitchen Aid.

Shaker-style cabinets

2015 Kitchen Designs 2

The classic and stylish look of the colonial days is expected to make a huge comeback in 2015. The simple style is appealing to the eye and proves itself as a timeless design. Using American woods, the more expensive Shaker-style cabinets also have durability that will last you centuries, which makes the splurge worth every hard-earned penny.

All-white everything

2015 Kitchen Designs 3

2015 Kitchen Designs 3

Typically, we're used to seeing a white kitchen with stainless steel appliances. This isn't going to remain the case in 2015. Designers are taking a trip back to the '90s and opting for white appliances. Enjoying the seamless look from wall, to cabinet, to fridge; the design is clean, crisp and surprisingly inviting.

Sleek & sophisticated black

Had enough of the white trend? Go in the opposite direction toward 2015's craziest, yet classiest, trend yet — black. Looking sexy yet modern, black cabinets are popping up in homes all over the country. And how could you resist? The sleek design hides dirt, grime and looks absolutely astonishing with stripes, checkers and pretty much anything and everything.

13 Photos that will break your crush on white kitchen cabinets

Noteworthy cabinet shades

Like black, unconventional cabinet shades are definitely a common thread in 2015. Homeowners are leaning more toward grays, blues, teals, greens, beige and even shades as wild as red or pink. If not the entire kitchen, a statement set of cabinets is also rising in the ranks as an appealing choice for homeowners.

Farmhouse sinks

This year, the stainless steel sink is expected to go to the wayside. In its place are the charming farmhouse sinks that us French country kitchen addicts have been drooling over since 2012. The white chunky style is anticipated to be more than a fad and rather a staple in kitchens everywhere.

Open shelving

2015 Kitchen Designs 7

In 2015, it's time to show off your china! Exposed shelving is becoming all the rage and for good reason. And although one would think that open shelving would make the kitchen look crowded, the style does the exact opposite. Instead the space is given a cozy and relaxed spirit, which is exactly how a kitchen should feel in a home.

More: Katy Perry, John Mayer were spotted doing something very exciting together

The "Roar" singer just showed she has some serious love for '90s girl band, TLC, by giving a $5,000 donation to their Kickstarter campaign. They're using it to raise money to hopefully record their final album in 2015. What better way to put that Super Bowl paycheck to use?

TLC band member, Tionne "T-boz" Watkins, tweeted a thank you to Perry Wednesday, saying, "A BIG Special THANK YOU 2 @katyperry for her pledge to our #Kickstarter Campaign! Your [sic] awesome!"

The Kickstarter pledge came just one day after TLC announced their Main Event tour, which will kick off May 1 in Las Vegas, along with '90s boy band, New Kids on the Block, and rapper, Nelly. Time for a trip to Sin City, obviously.

More: Ain't too proud to beg — TLC asks fans to donate to release final album

Luckily, even those who can't make any Main Event tour dates will likely be able to hear the sweet, sweet sounds of TLC very soon. By Wednesday evening, with four weeks of fundraising still go to, the "Waterfalls" singers were only about $11,000 short of their $150,000 goal.

"We wouldn’t dream of making our final album with anyone BUT our fans," they wrote on their Kickstarter page. "Come on y'all, BE A PART OF TLC HISTORY!"

The upcoming tour is already a dream for '90s kids, but this may make it even better: E! News reports that New Kids on the Block teased at some onstage collaboration.

"We're going to come out on some of their [songs]," Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas told the site. "We're going to study [their dance moves] every day and then we are going to pop up."

Maybe on their favorite TLC songs? Jonathan Knight said his fave is "Scrubs," while Joey McIntyre said he loves "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg."

"I mean, 'Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg' was like the one that set it off and just exploded," he said. "I still love that one. That's my favorite."

Anne Hathaway's New Year's resolution shows off her distorted body image

More: Anne Hathaway is scared of people from Third World countries

The Interstellar star wants to be more like Jessica Chastain in 2015. There are so many great reasons to want to be like Chastain — she's talented, intelligent and philanthropic — but Hathaway's reason proves a sad stereotype.

"I remember we were both at a luncheon, and I was sitting next to her and I asked her: 'So what's the first thing you're gonna eat Monday?' And she said, 'What do you mean?'" Hathaway said in a recent interview with Us Weekly. "I said, 'Monday when we can eat again — what's the first thing you're going to eat?'" Hathaway continued of their conversation. "And she goes, 'Oh, yeah. I don't do that!' She doesn't worry about it. She just shows up, and is who she is, so my New Year's resolution is to be more like Jessica Chastain."

More: Jessica Chastain delivers serious speech about Hollywood's diversity problem (VIDEO)

Giving up food to look better for award shows? A resolution to leave that behind is a very healthy change.

As a '90s kid, I grew up learning self-confidence from Hathaway's Princess Mia in The Princess Diaries. Did Hathaway not learn anything from her own movie? Because giving up eating until Monday just to look good for an event doesn't sound like something Mia would do.

It's hard for me to say I understand the unique pressures that come with living a public, Hollywood life. But I can say that Hathaway is thin and gorgeous by any sane person's standards. Her choices about her body are sending the wrong message — healthy is pretty. Confident is pretty. Anne can easily be both of those things — Chastain is, so striving to be like her is a great first step.

Good for Anne for making the decision to be better to her body this year. It's been 14 years since she taught us to love ourselves — and our flaws — in The Princess Diaries. It's about time she listened to her own message.

Man live blogs his wife's cheating on Reddit

$

0

The thread is long. Like 10,000 words. And it details with incredible precision, the horrible experience this man had of going through learning his wife was cheating after seeing her texts, hiring a private investigator and then spending days unable to tell her he knew while he was gathering evidence. All of this played out over the weekend on Reddit. The full thread is long, heartbreaking and riveting.

Some excerpts:

I decided to open up the phone and reply something stupid and funny in order to embarrass Jenny. So I opened up the iMessage app and went to read their previous conversation to see what was happening, so I could tell a relevant joke. 2nd to the top of the list of conversations was a chat with a guy/girl named Zack. I didn’t know who Zack was, but the most recent thing he sent her was “<3 gn”. I was curious, so I put off replying to my brother and opened up Jenny and Zack’s chat.

To my horror, there was sexually explicit talk of what he wanted to do to Jenny when she “crawled up next to his sack.” What a filthy beast. I scroll up, and there are multiple nudes from both of them waiting for me to discover. Most of them are dated sometime between 1-4am (usually I’m sleeping then, smart.) so I knew she was obviously trying to hide it from me.

I realized my wife is cheating on me. I took a moment to realize that this was the end of our marriage. All of our happy times, our foreign trips, and our romantic nights must have meant nothing to her. I put the phone down and went to the bathroom to freshen up while Jenny was still sleeping.

Heartbreaking, right? I mean who does this to a person they are supposed to love and cherish? It's beyond cruel. And then more:

Just my lucky day. Zack was dropped off at his flathouse and Jenny got out of the car followed him up the driveway. In plain sight, they passionately made out/kissed for 10-15 seconds, like a farewell kiss. Jenny then went back to the car and is driving again. That's enough proof for my case. I've got:

  • Nudes
  • Sexually suggestive texts
  • Sexual texts
  • Video and picture proof of them kissing and hanging out together.

Feels good that I now have more than enough proof. I'm devastated about what I've discovered. Hats off to the PI.

It's just horrible.

Of course, there is also the question of whether this helps or not. And it's a good one. With so much at stake and so much pain, it seems like he may have been happier if he'd just not read her texts. Or maybe not put it on Reddit. But then who are we to judge? If this was cathartic for him to have an audience, then he has every right to do that.

If you are going to cheat, hide your evidence better, stupid people. Better yet, don't cheat. It's not worth it. Someone's heart will always get broken.

E-cigarettes may be a lot more likely to cause cancer

$

0

In fact, the study found e-cigarettes contained up to 15 times higher levels of cancer-causing formaldehyde than regular cigarettes did. In the past, vapor cigarettes have been touted as the healthier way to smoke. So, why has science had a sudden change of heart?

Blame it all on the heat. As CBS News explains, e-cigarettes were thought to be healthier because they didn't require fire which eliminated the release of toxic chemicals due to combustion. However, many newer models of e-cigarettes have the ability to operate at higher heat levels and that heat is what releases the formaldehyde-containing compounds.

Critics of the study claim that the findings are unrealistic because smokers would not actually use the cigarettes at such high voltage. And on the bright side, the research found that when operated at low voltages e-cigarettes did not release the formaldehyde.

James F. Pankow, co-author of the study, clarifies that it's still too early to really know how bad they are, but the bottom line is simply don't smoke e-cigarettes at high voltages. He told NBC News, "We are not saying e-cigarettes are more hazardous than cigarettes. We are only looking at one chemical. … The jury is really out on how safe these drugs are."

For now, keep voltages low. Or to really err on the side of caution, just quit smoking.

But whether or not you agree with those tasting notes, I think we can all agree with one of the intrepid snacker's comments on Cheez-Its: "Seriously, though, this would be the bomb with alcohol."

Hope Solo in hot water again, will miss next 2 games

$

It was just six days ago that Solo got off the hook for the alleged domestic violence incident involving her sister and nephew. And now she will miss the next two USWNT matches after being suspended for 30 days.

Solo, whose middle name seems to be trouble, got all hot and bothered, as is her style, when her husband, Jerramy Stevens, was pulled over and was subsequently arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.

There has been no official report of her behavior, but TMZ has reported that they were told Solo was "acting belligerent" and took out her cell phone to record the officers while they arrested her husband.

Solo was not arrested or charged with anything.

More: Hope Solo weds man accused of assaulting her

According to TMZ, the Olympian and U.S. Women's National Team goalie was a "major pain" and the cops came close to arresting her for disorderly conduct. They also report that Stevens, a former NFL player, refused a breath test, and after being taken to the hospital for a blood test, the police became "convinced he was wasted."

Police say he was initially pulled over for having his headlights off just before 2 a.m. on Monday.

Solo had been attending a two-week training camp with the U.S. Women's National Team when the governing body decided it was time for her to take a break.

U.S. coach Jill Ellis said in an official statement, "During our current national team camp, Hope made a poor decision that resulted in a negative impact on U.S. Soccer and her teammates. We feel at this time it is best for her to step away."

More: Solo slams press, new husband lands in jail

Solo will miss the team's next matches against France and England, and her suspension will be reviewed after 30 days.

Solo released an official statement, saying, "I accept and respect the federation's decision, and more importantly, I apologize for disappointing my teammates, coaches and the federation who have always supported me. I think it is best for me to take a break, decompress from the stress of the last several months and come back mentally and physically ready to positively contribute to the team."

More: Hope Solo says her name will be cleared after arrest

You might be wondering why she wasn't suspended when the domestic violence incident was going on. During that time, Solo was not active on the U.S. team and since she was not on duty and the facts were still being disputed, USSF was waiting to decide what actions, if any, to take once the legal issues had been settled. Since that case was dismissed, due to witness noncompliance, no actions were taken.

Toddler dies after shooting himself with father's gun found in the car

2-year-old shot

2-year-old shot

The tragic event occurred amid the chaos of the family moving out of their East Lake, Florida, home. According to authorities, Kaleb's father, Kevin Ahles, had stored a .380 caliber handgun in the vehicle glove box.

At around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Kaleb found the gun in the car and shot himself in the chest. Sheriff Bob Gualtieri explained that the toddler was able to access the gun, turn it to his chest, pull the trigger and shoot. After that fatal shot was fired, Kaleb's mother and aunt attempted CPR. However, Kaleb died at Trinity Hospital soon after.

Sheriff Paul Gualtieri spoke of the incident, "It was a tragedy… where everything lined up the wrong way."

Stories like this are utterly heartbreaking, especially for parents of toddlers. I have two toddler sons very close to Kaleb's age, and I promise you that they can open any drawer and get into any cabinet in a minute flat.

You can't watch your kid every second. It's just not possible. But no matter how you feel about gun ownership in a home, you can secure a gun safely and store it in a place that no child could access.

If Kaleb was anything like my two sons, then he was already at the age where he naturally wanted to pick up gun-like objects and say "bang." After finding a loaded gun in his father's car, the little boy didn't stand a chance. There was no way he could have known that playing with a real gun would come to this tragic end.

According to the sheriffs at the scene, the family took "reasonable steps" to secure the small gun. In this case, I have to disagree. The gun was stored in an unlocked glove compartment that was easily accessed by a child. Though it is hard to blame parents who will certainly blame themselves for the rest of their lives, there is no way that this gun was stored safely.

Gun ownership may be up for debate, but here is what isn't: gun responsibility. Gun owners with small children need to take even more precautions, given the curious nature of toddlers. If you keep your gun in a car or another location where a toddler can get to it, it is not secured.

Empire: 15 Times Cookie stole last night's episode

More: 16 Things viewers had to say about Empire's premiere in tweets

Last night's episode did nothing to slow down our love for this woman. She is a powerhouse, and we cannot take our eyes off her when she is on the screen. And when she's not on the screen, we are annoyed that she's not on the screen.

We could try to recap the episode, but instead we're going to recap Cookie, because this show would not be what it is without her. Fun fact: Cookie, the food — delicious. Cookie, the person — even more delicious.

Here are 15 Cookie-related things from last night's installment of Empire that made us desperate to be her best friend/prodigy/person with whom she shares her clothing.

1. When she could have shut it down, but didn't

Cookie's first scene was one of pure beauty. Obviously, she looked amazing, but after being rebuffed by Lucious, she elected not to make a scene. But as she herself put it, she totally could have, and she totally would have won the battle. Lucious did tell her she looked nice, though, and she responded by taking a boot to the side of one of his vehicles.

2. This face

Cookie sunglasses

Unfortunately, most people look absolutely ridiculous when they wear sunglasses inside. Cookie, on the other hand, basically says, "I am queen, bow down," when she dons some shades indoors. She basically looks like she's throwing shade from behind the shades.

3. Anytime she spoke to Porsha

Porsha, while hilarious, is a little too eager to chime in at times. But the fun of seeing Porsha butt in is getting to watch Cookie tell her to butt out. The way Cookie says, "Go sit down," is something we're working on emulating.

4. Her vulnerability

Cookie is one tough, well, cookie, and she is at her most entertaining when she's being a badass. But the quieter moments, the ones where she's vulnerable — like when she's standing over Bunkie at the funeral home or defending herself to Lucious — are when we get to see at the core of who she is. And we like what we see.

5. Her funeral outfit

You guys, I can't even articulate this one in a way that does it justice. But basically, the dress code, whenever we happen to go to the big recording studio in the sky, will be Cookie funeral chic. Hats with a net are compulsory.

6. When she told Carol to work on it

And Carol knew she best get to working on it. Such is the power of an instruction from Cookie.

7. When she wore a cape

Forget Batman, Cookie is the real Caped Crusader. And you can forget about a sidekick; Cookie is so self-sufficient that if she'd had her own Robin, he would have quit out of boredom.

8. When she tried to use the FBI to help her find someone to write songs for her son

Um, and the FBI acquiesced to this request. We repeat: The FBI agreed to help Cookie do something that is not remotely in their realm of duty or at all relevant to them. Don't think this is amazing? Get back to us when the FBI starts doing favors for you. Spoiler: It's likely you'll never get back to us.

9. "I was loadeeeeed"

Cookie should get a spin-off, and it should just be footage of her having staged meetings with her fake parole officer. Cookie is one smart, um, cookie, and Lucious is a gullible douche canoe.

10. Her dancing

Not only can Cookie bust chops, but she can bust a move, too.

11. When she took her place at the head of the table

And refused to move. Not going to lie, we're currently planning to pull a Cookie at our own family dinners just to spice things up. Hopefully, Grandma won't take it personally.

12. When she used prayer to make a statement

Do you think Jesus cares that she referred to someone as a "hole" during said prayer? Hallelujah, indeed.

13. Her enthusiasm for Jamal

Sure, Jamal may be part of Cookie's plan to outdo Lucious, but she truly loves and accepts her son for who he is and supports his potential. While Lucious' investment in Jamal is limited on account of Jamal's sexuality, Cookie's pride in her son knows no bounds. It was particularly satisfying when Cookie told Lucious in no uncertain terms that he is going straight to hell, and once again, Cookie was right on the money.

14. Her understanding of what a "debutante" is

"A bougie ho with a lot of money." Well, that's one way to shut down someone who thinks they're better than you.

15. When Naomi Campbell was in the episode and we didn't care

Move over, Naomi. We want Cookie (kinda sounds like the Cookie Monster is speaking, hey?).

How long does it really take for food to go bad?

See, food producers don't have to put any dates at all on their food (unless we're talking baby food and formula, in which case, those dates are federally mandated, and you should never serve food past that date). So, while some packages still have an expiration date on them, others have entirely different dates that are there to let you know when food is at its freshest and when stores should get it off the shelf.

We're not saying you should eat foods well past their date, but if you know what the dates mean, then you can eat food longer than you maybe thought.

Reading dates on a package

Confusion

Image: Giphy

While there may be some parts of commercial packaging that are intentionally misleading (like 7UP being "all natural"), dates are straightforward if you know what to look for. Again, the only true expiration date appears on baby food and formula. Just about everything else is a "sell by" date (which tells the store to sell the product by that date so that the product will be at its freshest), "best used by" date (which tells you when to use the product for maximum quality) or "born on" or packaging date (so you know how old your beer… er, food… is).

Each of these dates is useful, but rarely does it mean that once the date has past the food is bad. Each food has its own shelf life after that date has past.

Eggs

Eggs

Image: Giphy

While Americans love to refrigerate their eggs, they're actually fairly spoil-proof and can sit out for a while before they go bad. WebMd states that, when stored in a cool, dry place, eggs can last up to five weeks before going bad. If you're concerned they've gone bad, the good news is that the lovely smell of sulfur will give you your first clue.

Famous condiments

We love mustard!

Image: Giphy

Surprisingly, mustard, mayonnaise and ketchup can all last a long time unopened and months opened. Who knows? Maybe a jar of mayo you buy today will mature over time and be even better in 10 years?

Canned goods

Kitty cans

Image: Giphy

As long as the can isn't dented (which could allow in outside bugs) or bulging (due to bacteria growth), canned goods have a shelf life of at least 18 months. Some inacidic foods can last years with going bad.

Milk

It's bad milk

Image: Giphy

Milk is good for about a week after its "sell by" date as long as little chunkies don't form.

Meat and fish

Meat robot

Image: Giphy

Meat spoilage will vary based on type, and quite frankly, it's tough to know how long meat has sat on a shelf before sale. Still, for delicate meats like fish and chicken, you should pretty much cook it and serve it in 24 hours. For red meat, you can have a few days to serve it. Of course, meat that smells or that has a funny color is bad no matter how old.

Bread

Bread!

Image: Giphy

Bread will go "bad" after a day or so, but it is still edible as long as it's not growing mold. Sure, most bread can be used as a hockey puck or baseball bat after a day or two, but you can eat it as long as it's not green.

But above all else, remember to trust your senses

What stinks?

Image: Giphy

No matter what we said above, trust your nose, your eyes, your tongue and your gut (both figuratively and literally). If a food looks wrong, has a powerfully bad odor (and isn't blue cheese), or if the texture is wrong, then toss it. There's no reason to make yourself sick over a bottle of mustard or a piece of meat that turned before its time.

The anatomy of a creepy Tinder profile

Picture? Check. Cute little tagline? Check. Swipe left 50 times for every swipe right? Check and check. Within a few days, though, you'll start wondering which strange galaxy you've fallen into. It's like sitting in an emergency department waiting room.

Here's the thing: Tinder is far more science than art, and you'll pretty quickly realize that there is a science to the creepy Tinder male profile. Avoid at all costs if you see a man sporting the following profile characteristics.

1. Overdoing it with the Halloween pictures

halloween

Image: TinderCreeps.com

We'll give a pass to one Halloween picture. One. Any more than that, though, and the dude is looking less quirky-cute and more into fetishes.

2. Slightly parted lips and big hair

big hair

Image: TinderCreeps.com

Any guy who thinks this is a good look has clearly spent too much time studying Justin Bieber. You're not a Calvin Klein model. Go home. We're not looking for the Biebs.

3. Bad nudity

bad nudity

Image: People On Tinder

What is behind that gnome? Drats, it's probably just more body hair.

Seriously, Tinder nudity is always a bad thing, especially if the guy has cropped out his face from the image.

4. Trying too hard

don't grow up

Image: The Tinder Files

This guy says that the "key to staying young is to never grow up." We're guessing that his other, unmentioned key to staying young is dating 18-year-olds.

5. A couple's profile

couple profile

Image: People On Tinder

Either JimnKatherine don't know how to Tinder, or they're spicing up their love life with a little swinging. Couple's profiles are a huge red flag — unless that's exactly what you're looking for!

6. Shirtless selfies

selfie

Image: The Tinder Files

Is this guy looking to meet new people in a hotel? Is that why he's taking his shirtless selfie in what is clearly a hotel lobby bathroom? We don't understand the shirtless selfie, and we don't understand the angry face.

7. Blood or weapons or both

blood

Favorite hobby? Murder.

8. Any version of this guy

narcissism

Image: TinderCreeps.com

Let's give 22-year-old Dominic the benefit of the doubt, and assume he's trying to be funny. Even if he is, though, a guy who opens his profile with how awesome he is and how you should be privileged to respond to his text is extremely questionable.

If a Tinder guy passes the creepy Tinder profile test, go ahead and text away — at least until he blows it with a creepy message.

Zooey Deschanel engaged!

Just a week after Zooey Deschanel announced she is expecting her first child with producer boyfriend Jacob Pechenik, the couple has officially announced they are engaged.

Her website, Hello Giggles, said, "So, it's been a HUGE month for our amazing co-founder and fearless leader, Zooey Deschanel. First, she announced she's expecting her first child with her boyfriend, Jacob Pechenik. Then, she celebrated her birthday last Sunday. And, TODAY, she's told us that she and Jacob are engaged! We are SO beyond-ecstatic, and we wish them all the very, very best. We love you, Zooey! Happy wedding planning!"

Deschanel's rep has confirmed the couple's engagement as well.

The couple, who began dating shortly after Deschanel's relationship ended with screenwriter Jamie Linden back in 2014, are said to be "over the moon" about expecting their first child.

This will be Deschanel's second marriage. She told Cosmo UK back in 2013 after the breakup of her first marriage that she still believes in true love. Let's hope she has finally found it!

We don't have a ring shot yet, but hopefully one will surface soon. For now, we are on high ring alert.

Baby and blender

Baby and blender

When we saw this baby's amazing facial expression upon hearing the buzzing of a blender, our faces also generated what we're sure were equally amazing looks of bewilderment. Also amazing? All it took for him to stop crying was for someone to switch on a blender. We did spend some time pondering what got him crying in the first place. We briefly considered that perhaps he didn't enjoy being on the washing machine, but he clearly likes appliances so that can't be it.

We can guarantee you this, though: It won't be long before they're selling blenders next to strollers in baby stores. OK, we can't guarantee that, but if it does happen, you heard it here first.
