Smart home technology

After watching this video, we've really turned our backs on our own kitchens. How can we possibly go on pretending it's all fine when our kitchen doesn't see us or know our personal info? And how have we gotten by this whole time without an alarm clock that imitates sunrise? Our current alarm clocks are so lame. All they do is make loud noise and interrupt our Ryan Gosling dreams.

Not to mention, we are totally into this idea of a house that senses when we are awake and turns the lights on for us. We are busy people and we don't have time to spend on illuminating our homes ourselves. Plus, all of the stuff in this video is so pretty and sleek and stylish. We want it all. We want it all now. Christmas is only 11 months away; you know what to do.

Prankster dad fills entire house with thousands of plastic balls

A dad from Los Angeles, California, decided to have some fun with his kids and surprise his wife by filling his house with hundreds of thousands of plastic ball pit balls. And a trampoline.

ball pit prank

ball pit prank

This looks like a lot of fun and I wish someone would fill my house with a gazillion plastic balls, but I would also hate having to be the one to clean that mess up. Maybe they have some sort of specialized ball-sucker vacuum they use to get all the balls up so you don't have to pick them up armfuls at a time. I certainly hope Roman's wife didn't have to help because as you saw in the video, she worked all day and had a 40-minute commute. I kind of hope he served her a nice dinner while she relaxed in her brand-new ball pit.

Mom sets baby on fire

Mom sets baby on fire

Hyphernkemberly Dorvilier of Pemberton Township has been charged with murder. She is currently in jail with a $500,000 bail set. Police responded to a call at 11 p.m. on Friday night that led them to the scene of the fire in the New Jersey township, located roughly 30 miles east of Philadelphia. Police officers found the baby girl on fire in the middle of a residential road.

At the time of the rescue, the baby was said to be alive and breathing. The infant was flown to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, where she died two hours later. Dorvilier was arrested at the scene.

Members of the community are in shock over the horrific act. A Candlelight Vigil for Pemberton Infant Facebook page has been created to gather donations for the baby's funeral, with plans to hold a memorial service this week. Organizer Jenna Dilley has emphasized that the purpose of the Facebook page is to pay tribute to the young baby who lost her life, not to garner media attention or place judgment.

Dilley posted to the page, "We are starting to gain some major media attention and everyone is wanting to get a good story out there to help with donations and share in celebrating the life of this precious little angel. I don't really care about a story, what I care about is the baby. I want my complete 100% attention to be focused on the baby and vigil."

It's natural to want to judge a mother who commits this type of heartbreaking crime, but until police release a motive, we don't know the full story. Dorvilier is very likely mentally ill. She could be suffering from postpartum depression. She could be struggling with addiction or another serious issue that has irrevocably clouded her judgment.

Pemberton Township residents provide the perfect example of how to respond in the face of such a terrible event, evidenced by the community's Facebook page. The damage is done, and now it's time to honor this baby girl whose life was violently cut short.

Dilley defies the mob mentality and extends a message of hope for the young victim's mother and remaining family, "I pray she finds her forgiveness and that we send the message that love is not conditional. What I do want to see is all of us, as a community reaching out to that extended family, loving them, embracing them and letting them all know we are here for them."

Meatless Monday: Open-faced grilled cheese sandwiches with a fried egg

This grilled cheese sandwich with roasted red peppers, arugula, and fried egg is somthing special

Each of us has that one meal to pull out when we don’t feel like cooking or if we haven’t been to the grocery store in a while. For me, "that meal" is the grilled cheese. But check it out, because this Meatless Monday grilled cheese sandwich is a little different from the standard sandwich.

I love this sandwich because it still has that comfort feel to it, yet it includes a few ingredients, like arugula and roasted red peppers, to make it more of a special meal. To top things off, a fried egg served on the very top of this open-faced sandwich makes it even more complete.

This Meatless Monday grilled cheese sandwich with roasted red peppers, arugula, and fried egg is great for any meal of the day

This sandwich works perfectly for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Read the FDA's food safety information for how to safely buy, store and prepare eggs.

Grilled cheese sandwiches with roasted red peppers, arugula and fried egg recipe

You don't often think about fried eggs when you think grilled cheese sandwiches, but this recipe will change that. The egg adds heartiness, flavor and fun to a classic sandwich. Swiss cheese pairs nicely with the other ingredients, but you can use your favorite.

Serves 4

Prep time: 5 minutes | Cook time: 15 minutes | Total time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 4 slices rustic-style bread, cut about 2 inches thick
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1/2 cup roasted red peppers, cut into strips
  • 1-1/2 cups arugula leaves
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 4 pasteurized eggs
  • Salt and ground black pepper, to season

Directions:

  1. Butter 1 side of each slice of bread. The buttered side will be placed on the griddle or pan.
  2. Add 2 slices of Swiss cheese to each slice of bread, followed by the roasted red peppers, then the arugula leaves.
  3. Heat a griddle or large skillet over medium heat. When the griddle or skillet is hot, carefully place the bread onto the surface to cook for about 4 minutes or until the cheese is melting and the bottom of the bread is lightly golden.
  4. As the grilled cheese cooks, to a large skillet over medium-low heat, add 1/2 the oil. When the oil is hot, carefully crack 2 eggs into the pan (keep the yolks intact), and try to keep them from touching. Cook for several minutes, until the whites and yolks of the eggs are firm.
  5. Use a spatula to remove the eggs from the pan, and transfer them to a warm dish. Repeat with the remaining oil and eggs.
  6. Transfer the grilled cheese sandwiches to plates, and top each with a fried egg. Season with salt and ground black pepper, and serve warm.

Miss Lebanon's selfie brings a firestorm of controversy

$

Miss Lebanon has claimed she was just trying to take a little selfie when "the enemy" jumped in to take her own photograph.

Miss Israel Insta

Miss Israel Insta

The photo posted to Instagram by Miss Israel shows four of the contestants and includes Miss Lebanon standing next to Miss Israel, and she totally looks like she might just be leaning in to take her own shot with the group, but who knows right?

More: The Miss World Pageant is changing, and men are likely going to be pissed

Why is this a big deal, you ask?

Well, the two countries are technically at war and have been for quite some time now, like decades. And it is still a very tenuous situation. For example, Israeli products are banned throughout Lebanon, and Lebanese people can be thrown into jail for traveling to or even calling Israel.

Saly Greige, aka Miss Lebanon, has claimed she was taken by surprise and has previously been trying to avoid Doron Matalon, aka Miss Israel, as most previous contestants have done (or have been instructed to do).

She said, "Since the first day of my arrival [in Miami] to participate [in] Miss Universe, I was very cautious to avoid being in any photo or communication with Miss Israel." She continued, saying, "I was having a photo with Miss Japan, Miss Slovenia and myself, suddenly Miss Israel jumped in, took a selfie, and put it on her social media."

More: SNL mocks Bieber and his junk in spot on Calvin Klein parody

But the photo tells a little bit of a different story, at least from what we can see. Of course, we weren't there, so this is just speculation, but Greige has no camera in her hands. One hand is free while the other appears to hold a water bottle. They could have just finished taking their selfie, right? Let's pick this apart a little further, shall we? (Read: sarcasm.)

To add to the scandal, Matalon tells a different tale.

She is "not surprised" by the whole affair. She posted to her Instagram, saying, "Too bad you cannot put the hostility out of the game, only for three weeks of an experience of a lifetime that we can meet girls from around the world and also from the neighbouring [sic] country."

More: Open letter to Kendall Jenner: Here's what happens in your 20s

But it seems to be much more serious for Miss Lebanon. People online are calling for her to be stripped of her title, which is what historically happens when gaffes like this occur. Huda al-Turk, the then-Miss Lebanon, posed for a picture back in 1993 with the then-Miss Israel and had her title stripped.

While still at war, the two countries' conflict has been largely quiet since 2006.

Here's the deal. Either the girl got busted for taking a selfie with the wrong chick and is backtracking in a CYA attempt, or she was bum-rushed for a photo and is telling the truth.

Either way, maybe we can use this as a bridge. Should we really be getting mad at young girls at a pageant contest for taking pictures with each other? Isn't that what they are supposed to do?

These countries have been at war longer than they have been alive. If they can see that this person who should be "the enemy" is really just another person, why on earth is that a bad thing? Maybe the internet should be promoting that? This conflict runs deep, there are tons of history behind it and I don't pretend to understand all of it, but can we, just for a little while, try to remember that these are just girls taking a selfie?

Ali Larter welcomes a baby girl: Find out her vintage baby name

The 38-year-old Legends actress shared the first photo of her daughter, as well as the baby name on her website. Larter made sure to include her son, 4-year-old Theodore (or Teddy, as they like to call him), in the sweet announcement.

"It's a girl! We couldn't be more excited to share news of the arrival of Vivienne Margaret MacArthur on Thursday January 15th 2015," she wrote, sharing a photo of her daughter wrapped in a blanket and sleeping sweetly.

"She came bearing gifts for her brother: Batman sheets and lots of Gummy Bears!!!  7.5 lbs of love," she gushed.

Vivienne is a beautiful name of French origin that means "lively." According to the Social Security Administration, this name first became popular in 1914; however, it dropped off the top 1000 popular baby name charts after 1930 and didn't become popular again until 2009, when it was ranked at number 531. This name continues to climb the charts and is currently ranked at 280. Sophia is the most popular name this year.

Larter isn't the only celebrity to pick this name, as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt picked this name for their daughter, Vivienne Marcheline. NFL star Eric Decker and Jessie James chose the same name with a slightly different spelling (Vivianne), as did Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady (Vivian).

Her middle name of Margaret is of Irish origin that means "name of a saint." This name peaked in the early 1900s; however, it has stayed on the top 1000 baby name list which proves this American classic name is here to stay. Margaret is becoming a popular middle name choice for many celebrities, with stars like Nicole Kidman (and her daughter Faith Margaret), Mark Wahlberg (daughter Grace Margaret) and Tori Spelling (daughter Hattie Margaret) all choosing this middle name.

The Heroes alum, who showed off her baby bump on her Instagram page, revealed they were not finding out the sex of the baby until delivery.

30 Telltale signs Mom needs a night out

You know you need a night out when…

1. The last adult conversation you had revolved around poop.

2. You don't even remember the last time you were out of the house past dark.

3. Your version of dressing up, versus dressing down, means choosing between yoga pants, and your "good" yoga pants.

4. Your last night out resulted in the conception of your youngest child.

5. You've been watching Disney Junior for over an hour and there are no children in the room.

6. Talking to yourself in the mirror is the closest thing to adult conversation that you've had in several days.

7. The most action your bed has seen in months is when the toddler vomited all over it.

8. Your coworker is cranky, so you ask her the last time she made poopy.

9. You know every word to every animated entry in your Netflix queue.

10. Your trash can goes out more than you do.

11. You can't remember the last time you had a conversation with an adult that didn't involve telling a child "no," "stop," or "don’t."

12. The baby pukes in your mouth, and you're just happy it still tasted like milk instead of puke. And you know what puke tastes like.

13. It's been six months since you've used your hair dryer, put on makeup or waxed your eyebrows.

14. You've contemplated writing "Free Puppies" on a box and putting your kids in it.

15. You don't know what day of the week it is. You don't even know what time it is. It's either daytime or nighttime, and either a school day or not. That's it.

16. The FedEx guy leaves your packages out by the curb, because ringing your doorbell has resulted in a 45-minute conversation the last three times he's delivered to you.

17. Going out and having fun seems like too much work, and you'd rather just go to bed.

18. You begin making philosophical insights into SpongeBob episodes.

19. You are marking TV show premieres on your calendar, because that's the highlight of your social life.

20. Fixing your hair or putting on jeans has your kids or husband asking "What's the occasion?"

21. You just muttered "WTF" under your breath for the 20th time today, and it's only 8:30am.

22. You start having deep conversations with the infant and/or cats.

23. It's the 473rd Saturday night in a row you've been in your pajamas by 6 p.m.

24. A co-worker has something on their face, and you've licked your finger and started to wipe it off.

25. You wake up in the morning counting down the hours until bedtime.

26. The cops have been to your house because a neighbor thought you were being murdered, but it was just you, yelling at the kids.

27. A trip to a Target with Starbucks inside it, without the kids, constitutes the last date night you had.

29. A dental cleaning visit seems like a trip to the spa, and a weekend in jail sounds like a reasonable getaway at this point.

30. You understand why rodents eat their young.

How running boosted my self-confidence

$
0
0

But after watching last year's New York City Marathon, I decided that I was tired of telling people that I wasn't a runner. The next day, I registered to train for an April 2014 half marathon (13.1 miles) with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. My dad and brother are cancer survivors, so I knew running for a cause that has impacted my family would be great motivation.

Training for my first half marathon, especially during the winter, was very difficult. Still, one benefit of running is the opportunity to constantly reach new goals. Every day is a chance to run farther or faster than the day before. After crossing the finish line of my first race in Washington D.C., I discovered that reaching so many small goals along the way had renewed my self-confidence. Since then, I have run another half marathon in San Francisco and am about to run my first full marathon at Disney World. I am also registered for at least two more 2015 races.

For me, running has become a lifestyle. The self-confidence that I've gained from racing has carried over into my career, my relationships, and other areas of life. Even when I've just finished a sweaty 18-mile training run, I feel strong, capable and beautiful. However, I don't necessarily think that running is the key to this feeling. I think it's more about setting a big goal and consistently training to reach it. Join an intramural soccer team, ride your bike across the state, complete a Tough Mudder. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

Make it official

To begin, choose a race, event or activity and officially register for it. This will give you a date to work toward. It's especially motivating to choose a destination and make a trip out of your goal.

Recruit a friend

Having a friend train along with you is great accountability. It can also make the experience twice as fun. Soon, you'll find yourself trading group happy hours for team workouts.

Invest in the gear

Purchasing the right gear, whether it be new shoes or a bike, is not only an incentive to begin but is also safer for you. You'll prevent injury by having a professional help select your gear.

Celebrate small victories

If you focus only on your end goal, it will make the training process feel long. Give yourself weekly mini goals to achieve along the way. This will remind you of your progress.

No matter the goal, training to accomplish it will leave you with boosted confidence. There's nothing more beautiful than working toward a physical accomplishment and owning it. In the end, you'll walk away with more than a medal and will be ready to set the bar even higher. Cheers to a healthy new year!

4 Easy ways to promote inner well-being

$

Trying to find the balance between what needs to be done, versus what has to be done. When life gets hectic, I try to carve out some time for myself and indulge in a little pampering. Some the things that I do include:

1. Schedule "me" time

Book a mani-pedi or a relaxing massage. Stress goes down and you'll feel more relaxed. And you'll look great too. Making yourself a priority helps to increase your self-confidence and happiness.

2. Keep moving

Go for a walk or head to the gym. Getting your exercise on will increase endorphins and give you a natural, healthy glow. You'll feel better knowing that you're engaging in an activity with positive health benefits. If exercise isn't your thing, look into a yoga class. Renewing yourself in mind, body and spirit helps to achieve inner balance and beauty.

3. Turn your bathroom into your personal spa

Have an at-home spa night. If you have children, arrange for your partner to watch them for an hour. Light a candle, put your hair up, soak in the tub, put on a face mask and enjoy. There are so many beauty products available now that allow you to duplicate a spa experience at home. Some of these products include sheet masks, exfoliating treatments, hair masks, aromatherapy candles and massage lotions/oils.

4. Healthy skin starts from within!

The best inner glow comes from being happy and well-balanced. Make sure that you're practicing good self-care by eating right and drinking eight glasses of water a day. Having beautiful skin, looking and feeling healthy and having a nurturing skincare regimen will help you look and feel your best. That translates into an inner glow that you won’t have to fake... it will be real!

Car stolen with boy inside

Car stolen with boy inside

It's something many parents have done before. When it's long after bedtime and you're driving alone with kids, it makes sense to carry them in one at a time so they don't wake up. When Clearwater mom Elizabeth Rivera found the car missing, she contacted authorities who quickly launched a massive overnight search for 6-year-old Theron Fields.

Any parent can imagine the panic and horror Rivera must have dealt with not knowing if her son was safe or if his kidnapping had been intentional. Police reached out to local news outlets, helping spread word of the stolen vehicle with a child inside.

Fortunately, the police located Rivera's rented Ford Mustang just two miles from her apartment. They approached the car along with Rivera, and discovered Theron in the back seat — sound asleep. Even surrounded by several police officers with flashlights, the boy struggled to wake up. He had no idea the car had been stolen and never saw the thief.

Police believe the suspect may have realized he or she had a sleeping child in the car and quickly abandoned it. It's the best possible ending to every parent's worst nightmare.

12 Unusual 'safe' words people actually use in the bedroom

A safe word is probably going to come into play when things are getting rough and kinky. You may not think that you need one before you embark on your erotic night of fun, but in the heat of the moment, you'll be glad you planned ahead.

Clarisse Thorne, author of BDSM & Culture: 50 Shades of Stereotype and The S&M Feminist, explains the intended use of a safe word, "When two (or more) people have a BDSM encounter together, generally they set a safe word — a word that anyone can say at any time to stop the action."

Safe words can work for any couple, in any relationship, in any scenario or kink. It's all about feeling relaxed in knowing that you are giving your partner consent. The best and most fulfilling way to explore sexual fantasies is when both partners are comfortable in the arrangement.

The next time that you get wild in the bedroom, consider one of these 12 real safe words when the going gets rough:

Ain't too proud to beg: TLC asks fans to donate to release final album

You know who I'm talking about. You still know every word to Waterfalls and What About Your Friends. Yes, TLC is trying to record their fifth and final album, and they are using crowdfunding to get it done.

The now duo released their fourth album just seven months after the tragic death of their third bandmate Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes in 2002 and they have been relatively quiet ever since.

The group's remaining two members, Chilli and T-Boz, launched a Kickstarter campaign on Monday and are hoping to rake in $150,000 to fund the recording process, production and promotion of the album.

The No Scrubs singers say they have already started writing the album and want to release it in May, just ahead of their tour.

Chilli explains they are doing this to involve their fans in the creation and creative process. She said to the New York Daily News, "People may say, 'Hey, you are celebrities. Why can't you just pay for it yourself?' But it doesn't work that way. There's a lot that goes into it. We want to bring our fans into the process and see how it's done."

They also say that in doing the project this way, they can maintain "creative control" over their music. They say, "While major labels offer artists multimillion dollar recording and marketing budgets, they don't often give artists complete control of their own music. It is ESSENTIAL that we create our final album completely on our own terms, without any restrictions, with YOU."

Of course, they mention their missing member, saying, "This final album will be the first studio album by the two of us. Of course, Lisa's spirit will always be present in our music. That will never change."

And about that music.

TLC says they think they make timeless and universal music that transcends trends. They say their music is for everybody, and that is the kind of music they are going to create with this final album.

Now, TLC knows the key to reaching their fans is mutual respect and a little give and take. So they are offering "rewards" to "backers." Their campaign page has tons of different donation levels and a different reward for each level. For example, if you donate $100, you get a signed vinyl. If you donate $5,000, you get a slumber party with one of the members!

To date, TLC has just under 500 donors and has raised about $55,600.

That's crazy, sexy and cool.

Check out all the awesome things they are giving away with the donations made and keep up with their progress here.

It was just two weeks ago we got to see the ghastly photos of Teen Mom star Farrah Abraham's "botched" lip injection procedure that sent her to the emergency room. But everything seems to be back to its (semi) natural size now.

Abraham was spotted at a nightclub in Long Island, New York, this past weekend, and her lips looked fine.

According to Us Weekly, the reality-TV-turned-porn-star has admitted to having a lot of work done before the lip disaster. She is said to have had her nose, chin and breasts worked on. But when she tried to have implants placed in her lips, she apparently had a bad reaction to the anesthetic.

5-Year-old accidentally shoots and kills his baby brother

Baby shot by brother

Baby shot by brother

In a small, northwest Missouri town, a baby has died after his 5-year-old brother picked up a loaded gun and accidentally shot him in the head. After a woman frantically called 911 and reported that her son had shot her 9-month-old in the head with a paintball gun, emergency crews sped to her Elmo, Missouri, home. Instead of a paintball injury, they found the baby suffering from a gunshot wound. The child was life-flighted to a large children's hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, but he unfortunately didn't survive his injuries.

The case is still under investigation, but initial reports show that the baby was in a playpen when the older boy found the loaded .22 caliber Magnum revolver lying on a nearby bed. It's said that he picked it up and it discharged, sadly into the head of his little brother. The gun is reported to belong to a family member, not the boys' mother. No foul play is suspected in this incident.

Had this family practiced gun safety in the home, they would not be in the news, they would not be being discussed, their baby would be alive, and their young son wouldn't be completely traumatized and scarred for life. This mother wouldn't be grieving, this family member wouldn't be kicking himself for leaving a loaded handgun within reach of a child, and there wouldn't be a funeral to plan.

This tragedy is even greater because it was completely preventable. This wasn't a random stranger breaking into the house and taking shots at children. This was a family not practicing gun safety. You have to keep firearms unloaded and locked away, with ammunition also locked away in a separate location. It may be a pain in the butt to constantly unload your gun every time you come into a home, but that's part of the responsibility of owning a firearm. If you don't feel like keeping people safe, just don't bother buying a gun. Just don't.

I can't imagine the horror this mother experienced when she heard the shot and discovered the scene. I myself have a 5-year-old child, and I know the terror she'd experience if she accidentally shot a baby in the head. This situation is so tragic and so horrifying. Please, if you have a firearm, don't leave it loaded anywhere in the house, even where you don't think a kid can get to it.

Yields 6

Prep time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 15 minutes | Total time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

For the patties

  • 1 (15 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 6 ounces canned white beans, drained and rinsed (you could also use cooked chickpeas, peas, lentils or additional black beans)
  • 2 green onions, ends trimmed, finely chopped
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, seeds and membrane removed, diced
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro leaves, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable broth
  • 1/2 cup panko
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons Thai red curry paste
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 6 slider-size buns
  • Parchment paper

For the slaw

  • 1/3 cup shredded purple cabbage
  • 1/3 cup shredded green cabbage
  • 1/4 cup diced cucumber, seeds removed
  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter (creamy or crunchy)
  • 1 tablespoon chili garlic sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1-2 teaspoons lime juice, to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon agave, more to taste
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Chopped peanuts, as garnish

Directions:

For the patties

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and set it aside.
  2. To a large bowl, add the black beans and white beans (or whatever option you're using), and use the back of a large spoon to mash them.
  3. Add the green onions, bell pepper, garlic, cilantro and vegetable broth to the bean mixture. Mix well to combine.
  4. Add the panko, Thai red curry paste, salt and black pepper, and mix to combine. Shape the mixture into 3-inch-round patties about 1 inch thick. Place them on the baking sheet, and bake for about 15 minutes or until lightly golden and crispy on the outside.

For the slaw

  1. As the patties cook, to a bowl, add the vegetable broth and peanut butter, and microwave for about 30 seconds. Remove, and add the chili garlic sauce, sesame oil, soy sauce, lime juice, agave, salt and pepper. Mix well to combine.
  2. Taste, and adjust the seasoning as needed.
  3. Add the cabbage and cucumber to the mixture, and toss to combine.
  4. Serve the patties on the slider buns with the slaw over the top.
