Family traditions and building wonderful childhood memories that last a lifetime is what is really important during the holidays. So when I heard of the Elf on the Shelf idea a few years back, I knew this was a tradition I wanted to incorporate in our own family Christmases.

Elf on the Shelf ideas

The premise behind the Elf on the Shelf is that Santa sends a special elf to your house to keep an eye on your children to make sure they are behaving. At night, when everyone is asleep, the elf, with his magic powers, goes back to the North Pole to report to Santa on who was naughty and who was nice. The fun part is that before sunrise the next morning, your elf comes back from his nightly report to the big guy and appears in another location in your house whether it is something as simple as sitting in the Christmas tree or something quite mischievous as making “snow” angels on the kitchen table. There is one simple rule — no touching! If you touch your elf, his magic will disappear and he will no longer be able to travel back to the North Pole. This has been a great way to keep little hands off of our elf, which the children lovingly named Elfie Rojo. Rojo is the Spanish word for red. You think they’ve watched too much Dora the Explorer? This is definitely the highlight of our holiday season and with each Christmas Eve, which is the day Elfie goes back to the North Pole to stay until next year, the kids tell him goodbye and we talk about all the fun memories we’ve had with him over the past couple of weeks.

Elf on the Shelf idea 1: Elfie Rojo with floss and toothpaste

Idea 1

Elfie Rojo has good hygiene

Our sneaky lil’ Elfie Rojo was found in the children’s shower up on the towel rack this morning. Elfie looked like he had just finished taking a bath and flossing his teeth. For this set up, I took an old rag and fashioned it around Elfie’s head and then slipped in a flossing stick for good measure. Of course, upon finding him, I commented on how it looked like Elfie was trying to remind the children to take baths at night and to keep their teeth brushed so they won’t get cavities. Not all of Elfie’s pranks have to be silly; with some of them I try to throw in a life lesson or two.

Elf on the Shelf idea 2: Elfie Rojo sitting on a butterfly decoration

Idea 2

Elfie rides a butterfly

Elfie was found in my daughter’s room riding one of her butterfly decorations that hangs from the ceiling. Our family had just recently watched the movie Avatar so the kids thought that Elfie looked just like Jake Sully, the main character in the movie, riding one of the mountain banshees.

Elf on the Shelf idea 3: Elfie Rojo making snow angels

Idea 3

Elfie makes snow angels

In this Elf on a the Shelf idea, the kids found Elfie making “snow” angels on the kitchen table this particular morning and didn’t know whether to laugh or worry that Elfie would be in trouble. I pretended to be scolding Elfie for making such a mess, but the kids defended him and happily agreed to clean up the snow so that he wouldn’t get in trouble. Here’s a little tip: Double-sided tape helps to get your elf’s hands to stay where you need them to.

Elf on the Shelf idea 4: Elfie Rojo trading stocking for undergarments

Idea 4

Stocking Exchange

Once again, Elfie Rojo was quite the prankster on this day! He decided to take down all of our Christmas stockings and switch them out for each family member’s underwear. Maybe he wanted to start a new trend? The kids thought this was quite hilarious! I was a bit mortified when my neighbor decided to pay me a visit and my undies were out for the world to see.

Elf on the Shelf idea 5: Elfie Rojo reading a book

Idea 5

Elfie reads a book

I have a little doll bed that I use for my newborn photography sessions but Elfie thought it made for the perfect snuggle spot for him to read a book in front of our Christmas tree. I think we bought this little Christmas board book from the dollar store but it was the perfect size for Elfie to read. This can also be a good reminder for children who are at a reading age to practice their reading.

Elf on the Shelf idea 6: Elfie Rojo playing music

Idea 6

Elfie plays the guitar

Elfie Rojo was practicing the guitar when the children found him this day. I love to play guitar, although I find I haven’t had the time to play lately. Nestled into my guitar strings and with my music book opened to what else — ”Jingle Bells,” Elfie was ready to play and sing! A few days later, the kids and I took Elfie’s advice and sang ”Jingle Bells” while I clumsily fumbled through chords. It had been too long since I last played, and my fingers were so sore. Nonetheless, the kids didn’t care that I didn’t hit every note; they just enjoyed having Mommy time and singing!

Elf on the Shelf idea 7: Elfie Rojo zip lining

Idea 7

Elfie was found zip lining through the boys’ room

This one was a bit difficult to do. I knew the boys had to be completely asleep for this one since I was going to be setting this up in their room. I hung ribbon from the ceiling to the other end of the wall and then taped Elfie’s hand to a candy cane creating a zip line. We had recently spent a weekend at the Longhorn River Ranch where there was a zip line over the river which the kids really wanted to do but it was just too high for them. The kids thought it was neat that at least Elfie got to zip line even though they didn’t get to this past summer!

Elf on the Shelf idea 8: Elfie Rojo eating ice cream

Idea 8

Elfie Rojo loves ice cream — who knew?

After searching and searching that morning for Elfie Rojo, my daughter finally found him in the freezer holding an ice cream cone! The cone was one of the little food items that was a part of my daughter’s kitchen play set.

Elf on the Shelf idea 9: Elfie Rojo pretending to be Santa

Idea 9

Elfie impersonates the “Big Guy”

I hung the tail end of a Santa hat into the kitchen cabinet and then sat Elfie into the mouth cut out of the beard attachment. Not sure Elfie fooled any of us with his disguise but the children thought it was funny. This made it difficult getting to our plates and bowls in the cabinet since you aren’t supposed to touch or move Elfie, but we managed for one day.

Elf on the Shelf idea 10: Elfie Rojo playing Scrabble

Idea 10

Elfie Rojo plays Scrabble with friends

Elfie Rojo, along with Hulk, Raggedy Ann and T-Rex, were found playing an intense game of Scrabble this morning. All the words on the board had something to do with Christmas — deer, trees, Christmas, hat, Santa, snowman, and of course, Elfie Rojo! Hulk was mad because he had all vowels and couldn’t play. Don’t you hate it when that happens?

Elf on the Shelf idea 11: Elfie Rojo writes a letter to the children

Idea 11

Elfie writes a cautionary note to remind the kids to be good

The kids were particularly bad one day so the next morning Elfie was found by the front door holding a pencil with which he wrote the kids a note reminding them that they needed to behave to be on Santa’s Nice List. Here’s a little tip: I wrote this letter with my left hand in fear that my kids would recognize my handwriting. It took a little longer but they didn’t recognize it and the writing almost looks childlike which I think looks authentic.

Elf on the Shelf idea 12: Elfie Rojo takes a nap

Idea 12

Elfie takes a siesta

All that traveling back and forth to the North Pole and back has made Elfie Rojo very tired so he decides to relax and have a fruity umbrella drink. I hung a bandana between two poinsettias to make the hammock. The yellow game piece from our Trouble game became the glass and a toothpick with a small round piece of decorative paper became the drink umbrella. I think at this point, Mommy was ready for a little R & R too.

Elf on the Shelf idea 13: Elfie Rojo plays with toilet paper

Idea 13

Elfie plays with toilet paper

Elfie reminded the kids that there were only five more days until Christmas. He hung toilet paper from the top cabinet and used Momma’s lip stick to write his message.

Elf on the Shelf idea 14: Elfie Rojo has a snowball fight

Idea 14

Snowball fight!

Using Lego blocks for barriers and marshmallows for snowballs, Elfie and Bumblebee set out to have a very fun time with a big snowball fight. Although, by the time I was able to get my camera out that morning to get a quick photo, half the snowballs had disappeared! My three little snowball eaters had already cleared out a bunch of the snow before this picture was taken.

Elf on the Shelf idea 15: Elfie Rojo turns the kids into Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

Idea 15

Elfie turns the kids into Rudolph

This Elf on the Shelf idea was so much fun, but a little tricky to pull off. I initially thought about using lipstick, but the thought of it smudging off during the night and getting on all the pillows, was not pleasant. So I decided to use a washable craft paint instead. But then again, I struggled with the idea that the paint might still rub off in the middle of the night. So plan B, instead of painting their noses at the beginning of the night, I woke up early that morning and painted the red dots on about an hour before they typically wake up. At the most, if they did have that one last roll-over before getting out of bed it wouldn’t be too bad of a smudge and hopefully the paint would be dry within a minute or two after I applied it. I set up Elfie on the counter so when the kids walked into the living room they would see his note. The squeal of excitement from all three kids from this little red dot could be heard from the next house over!

Elf on the Shelf idea 16: Elfie Rojo plays pirate

Idea 16

Elfie plays pirate

Elfie Rojo, or should I say pirate Rojo, was found hiding in the kitchen cabinets in the Treasure Island skull mug my husband bought during one of his trips to Las Vegas. His pirate eye patch is made from a tiny piece of black craft paper and tied with some elastic string.

Elf on the Shelf idea 17: Elfie Rojo hides in a wreath

Idea 17

Elfie impersonates the “Big Guy” again

Elfie brought his own red Santa bag with little gifts for everyone. Each child received small do-it-yourself Christmas ornaments to make that morning after breakfast. Note: These types of ornaments can be found fairly inexpensively at any craft store or dollar store. For Elfie’s Santa beard, I first cut a small paper beard. Next I pulled off tiny bits of cotton ball and rolled them into smaller balls to glue to the paper beard. And once again, a good sized piece of double sided tape kept the beard on Elfie’s face.

Elf on the Shelf idea 18: Elfie Rojo plays I Spy

Idea 18

Elfie plays I Spy

I spy with my little eye... Elfie Rojo! This particular morning, it took the children forever to find Elfie because he was hiding so well and even disguised himself as a girl complete with a pink bow! After what seems like several minutes and some discouraging comments from the children, I announced “I spy with my little eye, Elfie Rojo!” They all came running into my daughter’s room searching and searching until finally my son exclaimed, “There he is!”

Elf on the Shelf idea 19: Elfie Rojo doodles on a photo

Idea 19

Elfie was naughty and doodled on a photo

The children found Elfie perched up on one of our framed photos and he had drawn a silly mustache and other doodles on my oldest son’s picture. The kids thought this was a riot and laughed hysterically! I actually used a sharpie marker which I tested beforehand to make sure it would come off. However, if I would have had a dry erase marker, it would have worked better and saved me a little bit of scrubbing.

Elf on the Shelf idea 20: Elfie Rojo plays twister

Idea 20

Elfie plays Twister

Elfie Rojo and his friends stayed up late playing Twister. He was actually in a sitting position when I went to bed that night, but by morning time, he was slumped over. Fortunately I think it made him look more genuine because it looked like he couldn’t stay on his color and fell over which is fairly typical in the game of Twister when you’ve got arms and legs going everywhere and your balance is off.

Elf on the Shelf idea 21: Elfie Rojo rides a candy cane sled

Idea 21

Candy cane sled in the snow

Elfie was found riding a candy cane sled in some marshmallow snow! Once again, the “snow” did not last very long with three hungry munchkins in the house. What was once a large mound of snow was whittled down to just a few snowballs by the time I came back with my camera. The candy cane sled was easy to make. Just hot glue a couple of candy canes together and set to dry.

Elf on the Shelf idea 22: Elfie Rojo hanging under the mistletoe

Idea 22

Meet me under the mistletoe

Elfie Rojo hung mistletoe in the middle of our hallway which is the busiest area of our house because it connects our living room to the bedrooms. We found ourselves giving lots of hugs and kisses to one another that day — a perfect reminder of what Christmas is all about.

Elf on the Shelf idea 23: Elfie Rojo taking photographs

Idea 23

Elfie impersonates me

I am so flattered! The kids found Elfie in my office taking pictures with my old Iloca camera. His models were five McDonald happy meal figurines.

Elf on the Shelf idea 24: Elfie Rojo eating chocolate chips

Idea 24

Elfie loves chocolate chips

Oh our crazy Elfie was found in the pantry this morning head down in a bag of half eaten chocolate chips in this Elf on the Shelf idea. This was actually a great cover up for me. You see, I love chocolate too and the night before I found myself eating chocolate chips by the handful and watching a movie. Thanks for taking one for the team Elfie and covering for a fellow chocoholic!

Elf on the Shelf idea 25: Elfie Rojo hanging from Christmas lights

Idea 25

Elfie decorates the house with lights

Once again, Elfie Rojo proved very hard to find this particular morning. The kids searched and searched all over the house not realizing that he was outside! It looks like he was trying to hang Christmas lights on our house and also trying to drop a subtle hint to Daddy that it needed to be done. Being the little Elf that he is, he just couldn’t quite make it to the roof!

Elf on the Shelf idea 26: Elfie Rojo is captured by Army men

Idea 26

Elfie is captured by the Army men

The Army has captured Elfie and they are holding him hostage. With a little bit of rope and a Shake Weight , the army men try to keep Elfie Rojo from disappearing that night to go back to the North Pole. The mission was unsuccessful. Elfie escaped and was found in a different location the next morning.

Tailgate cooking tips

For some people, tailgating during home games is a way of life. It's easy to get a bit sick of hot dogs and chips and dips. You can amp it up with gourmet food if you know the tips and tricks to help you serve more complex dishes easily and safely.

Friends tailgaiting

Tailgating can be a foodie's worst nightmare! Cheap hot dogs on the dollar buns from the discount bin? Ew! And let me guess... they forgot the napkins . This year, take control of the tailgate yourself and use these tips to keep your guests satisfied the gourmet way.

Pre-game preparation essentials

First, you need the right tools. Obviously, you'll need a portable grill, but depending on how often you tailgate and what kinds of foods you plan to cook, you may also want to invest in a camping oven . You can even find oven/grill combos . And don't forget to buy a couple of large coolers or portable refrigerators .

But you'll also want to make sure you have other cooking utensils. You can purchase kits for camping that come with a selection of spatulas, knives and other must-haves — and invest in a set of pots and pans that you can place on an outdoor grill. If you're really serious, think of investing in a portable kitchen cart to hold all your gear in one place so it's always where you need it.

Check out this tailgating checklist>>

Gourmet game-day grub

Now, just because we said gourmet doesn't mean you need to break out your grandma's famous lasagna recipe. Tailgate parties are for mingling. And while there are usually chairs, table space is limited or nonexistent. You still want foods people can easily hold with their hands and that won't be awkward to eat from a hand-held plate or bowl.

Try doing gourmet spins on traditional tailgate specialties. Instead of hot dogs, try beer brats . Instead of plain burgers, try a bleu cheese bacon burger or a delicious hot sandwich. On a cold day, gourmet grilled cheese and tomato soup or some beer-spiked chili will really hit the spot.

Here's our list of gourmet recipes, fit for tailgating>>

While we love indulging our kiddie side with corn dogs, leave the yellow mustard and fancy ketchup at home. Go with some gourmet condiments from companies like Boar's Head or Dean & DeLuca.

Quick tip: If you just can't cook out without traditional grill or barbecue sides, try serving them in edible containers: pre-crisped tortilla bowls, biscuit or croissant cups baked in muffin tins or edible spoons are good options. For example, make potato salad and spoon it into halved boiled eggs, a la deviled eggs.

Think "better beverages"

Don't forget to properly pair your beers with your food. Why spend all that time making a delicious gourmet meal just to pair it with a cheapo pilsner? Spend some time learning how to pair beers and make your selections accordingly.

But don't feel limited to just beer. Wine is a popular option at foodie tailgates, too. And instead of bringing ingredients for several cocktails, make up a single cocktail themed with your teams' colors. For example, if you follow the Packers, try a drink using absinthe. But your theme doesn't have to be color. If you scream for the Saints, try a Mardi Gras-inspired libation.

Write out a game plan

NFL coaches don't leave anything to chance, and neither should you. You'll want to plan to have everything ready by kickoff .

Every stadium has rules about tailgating. They may prohibit certain types of containers . Some have electrical outlets and some don't. You may be required to fill out special paperwork or reserve a space on your credit card.

Write out your menu, noting prep and cook times. Decide what you'll do ahead and what you'll do at the game; then determine what time you need to start cooking to get it all done. Don't forget that space is limited, so think about what you can fit on the grill together. Don't be afraid to delegate, either. Assign different dishes to your fellow foodie friends with specific tips on making them tailgate-friendly .

Also, when you get there, introduce yourself to the people tailgating next to you. Try to bring extras of the supplies people tend to forget — you may need a favor from them a little later!

Kim Kardashian divorce drags on

It looks like Kris Humphries isn't going down without a fight as he battles the prenuptial agreement and Kim Kardashian fights to end the marriage as soon as possible.

KimKardashianDivorce

Can't a girl like Kim Kardashian just get a good old-fashioned divorce? Not if Kris Humphries can help it. The former couple, who split in October 2011 after just 72 days of marriage, continues to battle it out over the prenuptial agreement.

The Brooklyn Nets basketball player seems intent on trying to squeeze money out of the agreement which basically gives him nothing. The ironic thing is that he and Kardashian both made a fortune out of their short-lived marriage thanks to the E! TV special and a host of sponsors for their wedding.

The latest player dragged into this mess is none other than Kardashian's current boyfriend, Kanye West. Yes, Humphries and his legal team have deposed the rapper even though his ex-wife has yet to be deposed. At this rate, the divorce proceedings have lasted eons longer than the actual marriage.

The reality show's lawyer, Laura Wasser, is not too thrilled about the latest development in this divorce case. As Wasser told the court on Wednesday "She [Kim] is now handcuffed to Mr. Humphries."

It should also be noted that Humphries is still seeking an annulment while his ex just wants a traditional divorce. With the case going on its second year, it looks like Kardashian will have to wait even longer to get engaged to her music mogul. She has made no secret that West will be her next husband and hopefully, the father to her first child.

The next time the attorneys will face off is Feb. 15 when they all return to court to officially set a trial date to hopefully resolve the nuptial woes. If not, one of Hollywood's shortest marriages will become one of Hollywood's longest divorces.

Vegas recap: Havana nights

The stakes are getting high in Vegas. From past lovers to what really happened to Lamb's wife, this week's episode may be the best yet!

Lamb and Savino

Vincent Savino is in some trouble. Eight years ago he spent time in Havana and had a steamy affair with the sexy and troubled singer Diane Desmond. Now she's back in Vegas, and because of new boss Johnny Rizzo, she's got a full-time gig at the Savoy. It's too bad for Vincent that she didn't leave her feelings for him back in Havana. Instead, she has no qualms about hitting on him right in front of his wife or dropping her clothes on the floor when they are alone. This won't lead anywhere good.

Vincent really is in love with his wife Laura and is doing everything he can to get rid of Diane, but that woman is stubborn. He does trip up, however, when he asks Diane for a favor to distract Rizzo for the night. Their conversation gets heated and Laura walks in just in time to catch the tension. She may play dumb, but she's a smart woman and figures out quickly that Diane is his old mistress from Havana.

Now, Laura wants nothing more than to get rid of Diane and she's already proven she's a woman who gets what she wants. Since it's Rizzo who's controlling everything in the Savoy now, she knows Vincent can't just fire Diane. So instead, she goes to our favorite ADA Katherine O'Connell and agrees to start giving information on her husband's associates. Johnny Rizzo better watch his back.

On the law-abiding side of Vegas, the Lamb brothers are on the case of a murdered airman and have to work with an Air Force lieutenant who isn't exactly fond of Ralph Lamb's investigation tactics. It isn't until the lieutenant discovers Ralph's past as a military police investigator that some mutual respect is established and the two are able to work together to make some headway in the case..

After talking to the victim's girlfriend they were able to establish that the airman was preparing to propose in their "special spot" that evening , but by 3 p.m. he had completely changed his plans. Not long after he was found murdered. So what happened in those four hours to set the victim so off course from his original plans? Ralph and the Lieutenant stop at nothing to find the answer, but they land in dangerous territory when they uncover a government conspiracy to cover up an outbreak of radiation poisoning. After being held at gunpoint by the corrupt government officials twice, Ralph is able to outsmart the men and get a confession.

Before the lieutenant leaves, he asks Ralph if everything has become an investigation since he's taken on his sheriff's role — does he find himself obsessing over every detail until he finds the answer? Ralph says not, but we know he's lying. Later, over a glass of scotch, he looks at his deceased wife's police report and discovers that there was suspicion of foul play in her car accident. Pity the fool who murdered Mrs. Lamb — Ralph will not rest until he finds him and serves up his famous and unique brand of justice.

Get them while they last! Land yourself one of the first seats at the IMAX midnight Hobbit premieres and you could walk away with some awesome artwork!

Hobbit poster

In case you live under a rock in the Shire and haven't heard, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is nearly upon us.

As if the experience couldn't get any more epic, participating IMAX theaters will be giving away limited-edition posters at their midnight premieres.

In the running are four beautiful pieces featuring Bilbo Baggins, Gollum, Gandalf and Thorin Oakenshield.

If free posters are this intricate, we can only imagine how amazing this movie as a whole will be!

Peter Jackson has crafted the predecessor film to The Lord of the Rings saga: the story of one hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, and his unexpected adventure deep into the darkness of Middle Earth and ultimately an exploration of himself.

Although the burden of the ring rests on Bilbo alone, his travels place him within great company like that of the wizard Gandalf, dwarves, elves and all the monstrous creatures on the fringes of his peaceful land.

The Hobbit may be cast across a medieval plain but it ultimately tells of the troubles we must all overcome on the path to courage, sacrifice and strength.

Cheesecake recipes

Cheesecake is so dense, creamy, sweet and luscious, it's no wonder it inspired an entire restaurant franchise! Yes, the calorie-count is high, as is the relative fat content. But it is so, so good. When you do have it, you should go all out.

Cheesecake

The delicious versatility of cheesecake

Cheesecake is not really a cake at all. It's more a custard tart made with soft cheese and other sweetened dairy ingredients, and there are variations in numerous world cuisines, from European to Asian. If you treat a cheesecake like a custard, you'll like your results even more.

The really great thing about cheesecake, though, is that once you learn a good basic recipe, you can dress it up, add to it and generally make it different — but just as wonderful — each time you make it. You can experiment with crusts and additions to the filling and sauces to finish it off.

Imagine a standard graham cracker crust, a little amaretto added to the filling, and the whole thing topped off with caramel and toasted almonds. Or, a cheesecake with a gingersnap crust, topped with a warm pear compote. What about a cheesecake with chocolate cookie crust, nothing added to the filling, topped with a fresh raspberry coulis. One basic recipe, three very different results.

The only special equipment you need to make a cheesecake is a springform pan, however, some even dispute that. We do find them easier to manage than straight-sided pans, though.

Cheesecake crust options

Your cheesecake crust is as individual as you are. You can use:

  • Graham crackers
  • Chocolate wafers
  • Gingersnaps
  • Lemon or orange wafers
  • Coffee-flavored wafers
  • Ground nuts

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups crumbs, or mix of crumbs and nuts
  • 3-4 tablespoons melted butter

Directions:

  1. Combine the crumbs and the butter.
  2. Press evenly along the bottom and half way up the sides of a springform pan, and set aside until your filling is ready.

Cheesecake filling

This basic filling is a terrific foundation recipe for building many different flavors of cheesecake.

Ingredients:

  • 2 packages cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups sour cream

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare a springform pan with your desired crust ingredients and wrap the bottom of the pan in heavy-duty aluminum foil.
  2. In a large bowl, beat together cream cheese, sugar and cornstarch until very smooth. Beat in eggs one at a time. Add the lemon juice, vanilla and salt. Beat in the sour cream until just incorporated and very smooth.
  3. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan. Place the pan in a larger baking pan, and then add very hot water to the outer pan, so it goes about 1 inch up the springform pan.
  4. Bake for 45 minutes. Turn off the oven and let cheesecake sit in the oven for another 45 minutes. Remove the cheesecake from oven and let it cool completely. Refrigerate overnight before removing the sides of the springform pan.

Cheesecake additions and variations

Once you have the basic cheesecake recipe down, experiment with different ingredients.

Here are just a few cheesecake additions and variations:

  • Chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, butterscotch chips or other baking morsels
  • Crystallized ginger, finely chopped
  • Liqueurs and liquors — Amaretto, Frangelico, Grand Marnier, rum, bourbon and more. If you add more liquid here, cut down on the sour cream slightly.
  • Pureed fruit, such as banana, berries, mango and other tropical fruits are lovely... again, cut down on the sour cream if you add a particularly wet fruit
  • Floral and herb infusions, such as lavender and mint

Cheesecake toppings

Toppings for cheesecakes are where you can really go to town:

  • Hot fudge
  • Whipped cream
  • Caramel or dulce de leche
  • Fresh berry coulis with fresh berry garnish
  • Chopped nuts
  • Chutneys and compotes
  • Crushed cookies
  • Liqueurs, such as Chambord, Bailey's Irish Cream, Godiva
  • Fresh lemon or lime curd
  • Fresh fruit

With the countless ways to make cheesecake, you can always have a novel cheesecake dessert.

Bobbi Kristina ends engagement with "brother," crashes car

The daughter of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown has been in the news a lot lately, and not always for good reasons. The latest question: Is she engaged to her adopted brother?

Bobbi Kristina

Whitney Houston's daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, has been generating more questions than answers about her relationship with her "adopted brother,"Nick Gordon, for months now. Whom should we believe?

The rumors started back in March when Brown posted a photo of herself on Twitter with a large diamond ring. And then when her family's reality show, The Houstons, premiered, a preview showed Brown announcing, "We're engaged!"

But it looks like the engagement was over just as soon as it started. Gordon tweeted on Nov. 18 to announce the news.

"@REALbkBrown and I are not engaged or dating," he tweeted. "Just close like we have always been."

However, it's possible this isn't the scoop at all. Tracey Baker-Simmons, executive producer for The Houstons, replied to Gordon's post.

"@nickdgordon @realbkbrown watch to see how it all unfolds on#TheHoustons on @lifetimetv," she tweeted.

Since the couple has kept quiet about their relationship, except in the promos for the new show, this all may be a publicity stunt aimed at getting people to watch.

On Nov. 26, Brown posted a cryptic comment on her Twitter page, which may or may not be related to Gordon and their relationship.

"I guess it's time 4me2stop depending on anymore," she tweeted. "It's my time2follow what Mom&The Lord put out on this path for me.#Thankful. Mom xxo."

Brown may have bigger problems on her hands though. According to the New York Daily News, she crashed her car near her home on Wednesday.

"On Wednesday, Brown was involved in a frightening car crash while leaving her apartment in Alpharetta, Georgia, after allegedly losing control of the car while making a left turn," reported the newspaper. "Officials say the reality star likely drove over the curb and down the embankment, where her car hit a number of small trees before coming to a rest on a local park trail."

Brown tweeted soon after the accident: "My#PersonalGuardianAngel•• thankumom•miss&loveumre u'lleverkno. NotAScratch&ok ••• Wow,PraiseGod. @nickdgordon •••#SeriousChangeswithinME."

Weight Watchers tells everyone to ask Jessica Simpson

Weight Watchers weighs in on the Jessica Simpson pregnancy rumors by telling everyone to ask the spokesperson herself.

Jessica Simpson

After Us Weekly broke the news on Wednesday that Jessica Simpson is possibly pregnant with baby No. 2, almost every online outlet has speculated about the fashion mogul's baby bump. Most importantly, how does this pending baby affect her contract with Weight Watchers?

It has been reported that Simpson was paid $4 million to lose her post-pregnancy pounds with the help of the weight loss company. E! News talked to Weight Watchers' public relations manager, Stephanie Schulman, and received a non-answer.

Schulman told the news outlet, "Any questions related to Jessica's personal life can only be answered by her team. We do not disclose financial details about our relationships with any of our ambassadors."

In other words, the Fashion Star judge might be pregnant, and she might have signed a $4 million contract. If so, it throws the company into an awkward position.

The former singer had a tough time initially losing the weight, so her first commercial focused on her face instead of her body. Simpson has been very open about her struggles and even spoke about it on Katie Couric's talk show.

Back in September, she told Couric, "Every day it's a struggle for me. Weight Watchers is not intimidating. It's not a diet. It's a lifestyle."

Now that her daughter Maxwell is 6 months old, Simpson has started to see the fruits of her labors of diet and exercise. She filmed her latest Weight Watchers commercial just before the Thanksgiving holiday.

If another bundle of joy is on its way, neither Simpson, fiance Eric Johnson, nor employer Weight Watchers is saying a word. It looks like we will have to wait, just as we did last time, for her official Twitter announcement.

Hope Solo slams the press, new husband lands in jail

For Hope Solo and Jerramy Stevens, the road to wedded bliss is turning out to be a bumpy one. The soccer star finally spoke out about her "happy" marriage, only for her husband to be locked up the next day.

Hope Solo

Hope Solo's new husband, Jerramy Stevens, has been taken to jail for allegedly violating the terms of his parole.

Yet despite a string of apparent poor decisions leading up to his arrest just before their wedding, domestic violence charges being filed against him and now a trip to jail, it's the press this soccer star is peeved at.

"My life is great. My life is happy,"Solo, who wed Stevens on Nov. 13, told Larry Brown Sports after a training session Tuesday before her husband's latest arrest.

Appearing to reference the domestic violence charges filed against the former Seattle Seahawk player stemming from an incident Nov. 12 — the day before the pair exchanged vows — Hope Solo vented, "It's unfortunate what the media can do to really judge before the facts are out there."

She added, "It's hard to see, but it's a hard truth and it's part of life. I'm happy. I'm happily married."

Maybe sex should be an Olympic sport, too >>

Despite what was stated in police reports, Hope Solo insists she has no regrets about walking down the aisle and that violence isn't an issue in their relationship.

"We never stand for domestic violence. I've never been hit in my life," the 31-year-old went on to say. "It's unfortunate, and that's what the media can do."

Jerramy Stevens' latest trouble with the law occurred on Wednesday, Nov. 28, when he was taken into custody in Tampa, Florida, for purportedly violating his probation, E! News reports. The probation, in turn, stems from an October 2010 incident, in which cops found marijuana in his equipment bag while he was playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Jerramy Stevens remains in a Florida jail, awaiting an appearance before a judge. Meanwhile, Hope Solo is in Oregon training with the U.S. National Team for an upcoming game against Ireland.

Is this a case of the honeymoon being over before it even began?

Adele's 21 hits the 10-million-album mark

We knew the singer was popular, but no one predicted this. Adele's second album becomes only the 21st album ever to hit the diamond mark.

Adele

Adele's album 21 lived up to its name this week, as it became the 21st album to hit 10 million copies sold since Nielsen Soundscan began tracking record sales in 1991.

"Adele's sophomore studio album debuted in 2011 and featured such hits as 'Rolling in the Deep,' 'Someone Like You' and 'Set Fire to the Rain,'" according to the Associated Press.

And even though this is only the 21st album to reach the mark in the last 21 years, 2012 has been a landmark year for "diamond" albums. Adele's 21 becomes the third album already this year to hit the mark. Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park and Confessions by Usher both also passed the milestone this year. However, Hybrid Theory was released in 2000 and Confessions in 2004. 21 is not even 2 years old yet .

"Adele won in all six categories she was nominated in at the Grammys earlier this year, including album of the year," said the Associated Press.

According to MTV, a diamond-selling album may be mostly a thing of the past, with the easy access to online listening, YouTube videos and downloading.

"There is no set of events that can be duplicated [with 21]," Keith Caulfield, associated director of charts/retail for Billboard magazine told MTV. "Every blockbuster album has its own set of unique circumstances that propel it to that status and I don't think anyone would have expected 21 to sell as extraordinarily well as it has."

Adele's music has something a lot of other albums don't, including the ability to cross over to different genres and different target audiences. Jeff Rabhan, chair of recorded music and an arts professor at New York University's Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music, told MTV his guess about the reason for the album's success.

"The 20-year veteran of the music business, who has worked with everyone from Kelly Clarkson to Linkin Park and Jennifer Lopez, said the thing Adele did that, say [Linkin] Park's Hybrid Theory didn't, was that it reached an older demographic that is much more likely to buy a CD rather than a digital single," said MTV.

The Olympians take over! America's medalists from the London Olympics keep popping up all over television. This week, Gabby Douglas makes a guest appearance on The Vampire Diaries.

Gabby Douglas guest stars on The Vampire Diaries

The all-new episode of The Vampire Diaries looks like it's going to be a good one! It's time for the annual Miss Mystic Falls Pageant, and the town is aflutter in preparation. All while dealing with all the usual vampire/witch drama, of course.

On the pageant front, everyone is teaming up. Elena and Caroline are helping April decide which dress to wear. Meanwhile, Tyler and Hayley are working on a "secret project."The Vampire Diaries crew has been pretty hush-hush about what's in store for Gabby Douglas' role. Is it possible that she'll be in the pageant? Could she be Tyler and Hayley's project? We may be completely off base on those guesses, but we SheKnows girls can dream, right? Who wouldn't want to see The Flying Squirrel all dolled up?

During all of the pre-pageant scurrying, Elena's boys have their own things going on. Damon and Stefan are working on "projects" too. First, Damon is still leery of Professor Shane. What exactly is he up to in Mystic Falls? When Damon tries to coax Stefan into helping him figure out and confront Professor Shane, Stefan refuses. He's working on something else with the creepy and untrustworthy Klaus.

Tension between the brothers continues to mount, especially now that Elena is single again.

Everything will finally come to blows during the pageant . Damon will confront Professor Shane with his suspicions. We'll also find out that Jeremy may have waited too long to call attention to his slightly disturbing dreams when we discover their source during the big event.

Will we be right about Gabby Douglas and Tyler and Hayley's top-secret project? What will Damon find out about Professor Shane? And, most importantly, can any good come out of Stefan working with Klaus?

You'll have to tune in to find out! The Vampire Diaries' new episode, "My Brother's Keeper," airs Thursday at 8/7c.

Celebrities who think the world is ending next month

Dec. 21, 2012, is a date people in many cultures have been waiting for. Whether the predictions are true or not, some celebrities aren't taking any chances.

Mel Gibson

With the supposed end of the world fast approaching, there are all sorts of theories about what might happen, and the believers are not just ordinary people. Mel Gibson, who released the film Apocalypto, may be one of those who believes.

"The precursors to a civilization that's going under are the same, time and time again," he said at a conference recently, according to Yahoo!. "What's human sacrifice if not sending guys off to Iraq for no reason?... I just wanna draw the parallels. I don't wanna be a doomsayer, but the Mayan calendar ends in 2012. So have fun, boys and girls!"

Woody Harrelson seems to be another believer. He appeared in the film 2012 and has thought about the possiblilities of an actual impending apocalypse.

"I think that there is a real sense in our culture that we are heading towards some kind of apocalypse — maybe it is part of the Christian concept of the apocalypse, but I am not saying that is an exclusively Christian concept," Harrelson said in 2009, according to Yahoo!. "Maybe that is one of the things that make people resonate with these apocalyptic movies."

Actor Tom Cruise may be one actor whose wild antics do not surprise anyone anymore, and he may be the one who is preparing for Dec. 21 better than anyone.

"Tom Cruise reportedly dropped $10 million to build a bunker under his Telluride, Colorado, mansion — just in case," said Yahoo!. "According to Star magazine, the state-of-the-art safe house, featuring a high-tech air-purifying system, was said to have room for 10 people and would have enough supplies and equipment so that they could survive down there for several years."

Other stars who have commented on their preparation for the end of the world include Lil Wayne, Ashton Kutcher , Isla Fisher and George Lucas.

Whether or not the world ends on Dec. 21, 2012, it looks like quite a few celebrities may survive because they'll be ready.

Fox has put a hit out on The Mob Doctor. The network has confirmed that it won't order any additional episodes. The freshman drama has run its course.

Mob Doctor

It had to happen sooner or later. The Fox Network is cutting its losses. After months of struggling in the ratings, The Mob Doctor has been canceled. The series is one of the least-watched dramas on the major four networks.

Canceled: The latest shows to say "bye-bye" >>

According to Zap2it, The Mob Doctor averages 4.4 million viewers and a 1.3 in the 18–49 demo. With numbers like that, critics assumed it would have been pulled a while ago. But Fox stuck with it — until the network's hand was forced.

The Mob Doctor takes "the best of both worlds" to a new level>>

If you're one of the few who tuned in, here's some good news. The network plans to air its entire 13-episode order. But not all the episodes will premiere on the show's regularly scheduled Monday time slot. Following the holiday break , The Mob Doctor will return with one of its final four episodes.

Revolution vs. Mob Doctor: Which should you watch tonight?>>

Then starting Dec. 29, the remaining three episodes will air as follows: Dec. 31, Jan. 5 and Jan. 7. Two of those dates are Saturdays, which tells you that Fox can't wait to wrap things up.

The network also confirmed that Kiefer Sutherland's latest project, Touchhas been delayed — again. The series was scheduled to return Feb. 1, but now it's been pushed back a week. Instead of a one-hour premiere, Fox will air a special two-hour episode on Feb. 8 to compensate.

Review: Kiefer Sutherland has the magic Touch >>

It looks like Fox is trying to clear some space for its midseason arrivals. Hopefully, some of them will fare better than The Mob Doctor.

Are you sad to see The Mob Doctor go?

Anna Nicole Smith gets the Lifetime movie treatment

Move over Elizabeth Taylor. Anna Nicole Smith is the next celebrity getting the Lifetime movie treatment. The model will be played by Private Practice star Agnes Bruckner.

Agnes Bruckner

If you thought the Liz & Dick biopic on Lifetime was enough already with Lindsay Lohan's questionable portrayal of Elizabeth Taylor, get ready for another celebrity treatment from the same channel. Lifetime just completed production on the life of Anna Nicole Smith.

This time around, Private Practice star Agnes Bruckner will fill the role of the big-bosomed, curvy Southern model. Bruckner needed a little assistance to portray the role credibly, including lots of makeup, prosthetics, and the platinum-blonde hair Smith was so famous for.

The star also had to research Smith's life to get down her mannerisms and accent. As Bruckner recently told Entertainment Tonight, "It's such a fascinating story to me. There were so many different layers to her, and she was so iconic and so larger-than-life."

There were a lot of challenging aspects to the GUESS model's story since she suffered from a prescription drug addiction; she lost her beloved son, Danny, just after her daughter, Dannielynn, was born; and then she succumbed to a fatal drug overdose.

Bruckner revealed, "She had so many ups and downs. She was messy and crazy, and then she was really put-together at times."

Joining her for the made-for-TV-movie is Adam Goldberg, who plays Smith's trusted lawyer and boyfriend, Howard K. Stern. His role in her demise is a complicated one, involving years of court battles due to his enabling her prescription drug addiction.

Goldberg also told Entertainment Tonight, "I think it's a very difficult role to play, because there is just so much tape on this woman that it [would be] very easy to just do an impression.... You have to find something in it that is honest for yourself, and I think that's what Agnes is doing."

As for Smith's 6-year-old daughter with ex-boyfriend Larry Birkhead, she is making her own news this week. The little girl is following in mom's footsteps by modeling for GUESS Kids' spring 2013 campaign. Birkhead swears this is a one-time gig, but the blonde model is a natural in front of the camera.

The Anna Nicole Story will air on the Lifetime network in 2013.

Angus T. Jones will finish out ...Men season, future unclear

With Jones' apology received, his future with the show is in question. But will he return even if the show wants him?

Angus T. Jones

The controversy surrounding Angus T. Jones and his comments about Two and a Half Men is settling down, but Jones' future with the show is still in question. Will Jones decide to stay with the show, and if he does, will the show let him? According to Access Hollywood, Jones will remain with the show for at least the immediate future.

"Despite Two and a Half Men star Angus T. Jones' recent rant against the CBS show, the 19-year-old actor will finish out the season alongside series stars Jon Cryer and Ashton Kutcher," a source told Access Hollywood. The source continued, saying that "Angus intends to fulfill his contractual obligations for the current season."

But there is no word on his future after this season. When Charlie Sheen left Two and a Half Men, the producers did what they could to keep the show afloat. It seems likely they will do the same in this case. However, with or without Jones' rant, it's possible they knew he could be leaving in the near future.

"As for rumors claiming the young actor will not return for the comedy's 11th season, the source tells Access nothing has been decided as of yet, but when he signed his current contract, the... star put off going to college to do right by the show and its crew, but his intention was always to go to school."

It's easy to forget that the 19-year-old is just that...19. And he may want to be a normal kid for once. He has been on Two and a Half Men since he was a child. But for at least a month or so, Jones won't have to deal with it.

"Angus T. Jones wasn't expected at rehearsal Tuesday because he is not going to be in the episode they are filming," said the Associated Press. "Jones wouldn't be expected back at work until after the New Year.... His character has been largely absent because he has joined the Army."

Will Rider Strong also sign on for Boy Meets World sequel?

$

Fans of the original are waiting to hear who else might sign on to Girl Meets World. But there is one original star who might be missing.

Rider Strong

With Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel officially on board for Girl Meets World, the sequel to the '90s sitcom Boy Meets World, fans of the original show are wondering which other original cast members will sign on.

Rider Strong, who played Shawn Hunter in the original, said he doesn't plan on it — at least not yet. The actor released a statement to TMZ today discussing the possibilities.

"There might be a chance to see some of the BMW cast in a guest spot, and I think it would be nice to find out where our characters have been all these years," he said. "But Girl Meets World will be, and I think it should be, its own show."

He added, "At this point, I have no official involvement."

But just because he may not be involved as a full-time cast member doesn't mean he's not really excited about the news of a sequel to the show that helped him grow up.

"It will be about Cory and Topanga, their daughter, and a new set of characters," he told TMZ. "And I, for one, can't wait to see it evolve."

Ironically, even though Strong was a supporting character in the original show, he may have ended up with a more successful career than both Savage and Fishel. He has directed, produced and written numerous films and has appeared in even more TV shows and movies.

After Boy Meets World ended in 2000, Strong appeared on Kim Possible for two years and the TV show Pepper Dennis for a season. He has also guest-starred in shows like Law and Order: Criminal Intent, Veronica Mars and Bones. The actor is currently working on two movies.

Only time will tell if Strong will make an appearance on Girl Meets World. But as he said, even if he does, he won't be a central character since the show is based on Cory and Topanga's daughter, not her parents.

Could chiropractic care benefit your child?

Joint dysfunction and nerve irritation can impact young people in big ways — from causing headaches and sleeping troubles to bed wetting and asthma. Can chiropractic care help?

Joint dysfunction and nerve irritation can impact young people in big ways — from causing headaches and sleeping troubles to bed wetting and asthma. Can chiropractic care help?

Improved child health with... a chiropractor?

Chiropractic care is a branch of medicine that focuses on the musculoskeletal system and nervous system. Chiropractors focus on adjusting the spine to allow the proper functioning of the body via the nervous system.

Have you ever been to the chiropractor? This growing field is becoming an important part of maintaining optimal health — for kids and adults. Yes, seeing a chiropractor could really help your child.

Really? Children? Yes! Believe it or not, minor things like bumps and falls can actually harm joints and nerves — creating dysfunction and irritation that leads to ailments like headaches, sleep troubles, bed wetting and more.

Who is chiropractic care for?

Chiropractic care is really for everyone — from babies on up. "It can benefit kids just as it can benefit adults," says Dr. Katie Pinkus of Pinkus Family Chiropractic in Manchester, Vermont.

Pinkus says that chiropractic care focuses on healing the body, so that it can better communicate with itself — something that can be interrupted by misaligned vertebrae.

Dr. Carrie Getzmier, chair of the Minnesota Chiropractic Association communications committee agrees. "Gentle chiropractic care not only removes this nerve interference, but also stimulates the immune system, enhancing the child's overall health," says Getzmier. She says that babies with colic, difficulty breastfeeding, reflux and more could benefit from it.

The first appointment

The first appointment will vary based on the practice you choose. However, Pinkus says that in her office, the appointment is really a thorough evaluation. "We usually talk about nutrition and diet. We talk about prenatal and in utero and delivery care," says Pinkus. They also use special technology to do a neurological screen to see how the nerves are behaving — and which ones "are firing off too hard, what nerves are not firing off enough."

They also look at posture and gait.

Getting adjustments

When it's time for the adjustments, there is nothing to fear. Pinkus says that adjustments can be as minor as sustained pressure in a certain area, which varies in strength depending on what's needed. "It is not painful. If a child is young enough — most of my babies don’t wake up while I am adjusting them," says Pinkus. "We usually talk to the kids before the adjustment."

This non-painful, non-invasive branch of medicine could really help your kids. Why not give it a try?

Breaking news:

Liz Lemon
is getting married!

30 Rock fans may be bummed that this is the final season of the show, but at least they're getting a wedding out of the deal! The smart but hapless Liz Lemon is tying the knot. We can't tell you exactly what will happen, but here are some of our predictions...

Jack -- Alec Baldwin

The guests

This is easy! Everyone loves Liz Lemon... even her exes. Expect to see everyone from the set of TGS with Tracy Jordan. Of course, we expect to see Tracy Jordan . And we think his co-star, Jenna Maroney , will be Maid of Honor — no doubt wearing something highly inappropriate. We're sure all the TGS writing staff will be there, as well as everyone's favorite NBC page, Kenneth . Liz's parents and little brother will also be there.

Curve ball: What if her boss, Jack , decides to chime in when the preacher calls for objections to the marriage? We know there are quite a few people out there who "ship" Jack and Lemon!

Lemon and daisy vase

The decor

Liz's invitations were, of course, lemon-themed. Since most sensible brides will try to coordinate their invites to their decorations, we expect a few more lemons to be spotted. That means lots of yellow. Can you get any more bright and yellow than daisies? She could even class it up with a fancy lemonade-inspired cocktail. Yum! She may as well get as much use out of her last name as possible before she possibly changes it.

Sliders

The food

Liz Lemon is not a fancy girl. She likes hot dogs from the stands outside work and can chow down on Chinese takeout with the rest of the writers any time. Of foods Lemon really loves, ham seems to be her favorite. We wouldn't be shocked to find a ham-carving station. However, to class it up she could go with some bacon-wrapped scallops on skewers for hors d'oeuvres. Then, for laid-back yumminess, we think fancy hamburger sliders are the way to go. Maybe even with, ya know, bacon.

Nothing says Midwest girl like a hamburger, and sliders are just a little less messy to eat.

Donut cake

The cake

Lemon's Pinterest boards full of wedding inspiration are full of crazy cake ideas! From the R2D2 cake and the massive cake of the 30 Rock building, she's a fan of crazy cakes. She also really, really loves doughnuts! She certainly wouldn't be the first person to have a tiered cake made of Krispy Kremes. Because she also likes bacon... and chocolate, a chocolate cupcake topped with bacon crumbles may not be out of the question, either. Of course, she could stick with the lemon theme and do some pretty lemon poppy seed muffins. But, we know Lemon and we expect glazed goodness.

And, finally... the dress

Liz Lemon Dress ideas

You may remember the last time Liz got "married." It was accidentally to Jack and she was wearing an oversized white polo shirt. Here's the thing: Liz can be hot when she tries, but she hates to try. For that reason, we're not sure which way she'll go on the dress. On the one hand, she pinned an Elie Saab vintage-inspire lace gown with a Peter Pan collar. She'll look gorgeous in it! Then again, she'd also look super-cute and be far more comfy in a white cotton shirtdress. She could go for short and modern or something more poofy, like the ballgown-esque version Evan Rachel Wood wore to an Ides of March premiere. No matter what, we're sure her future hubby will love it!

Last but not least, if you ever wondered how Liz & Criss became engaged, we've got a sneak peek of that super-romantic story! Check it out!

Warm Salads for winter

You may think salads are a spring or summer dish, but winter can also be prime time for fresh salads. Not only are fruit and vegetables plentiful in winter, but you can prepare warm winter salads that are hearty, healthy and delish!

Winter veggies for warm salads

Some of the best ingredients to use for warm salads are tubers, leafy greens and squash. For example, radicchio, fennel, spinach, cabbage turnips and pumpkin are all tasty ingredients for a warm winter salad, and these veggies should be plentiful at your farmers market during the next few months. Simply walk around your farmers market and pick out a few vegetables you enjoy and that work well together to add to your salad.

Winter fruits and nuts

Another addition to your winter salad is fruit and nuts. Fruits like figs, pomegranates, persimmons, cranberries and rhubarb are some perfect additions to warm winter salads. Sprinkling pomegranate seeds or fresh cranberries overtop a warm salad adds freshness and brightness to a pile of sauteed vegetables. For some added crunch, you can add any kind of toasted nut; walnuts, pecans, pine nuts and Brazil nuts are just a few examples. Again, walk around your farmers market and pick a few fresh fruits to mix in for extra sweetness.

Protein

Most salads often include a protein like grilled chicken or tuna, so of course you can add these to your warm salad. But instead of adding cold, leftover chicken, prepare some fresh chicken, and keep it warm to top. You can also add some crispy bacon, freshly cooked ahi tuna, shredded pork, grilled salmon or even tasty fried oysters. Whichever protein you choose, make sure to keep it warm. You don't want warm veggies mixed with a cold piece of chicken. If you're really adventurous, add even more interesting proteins like pork belly, lamb or beef.

Additional ingredients

Besides the main ingredients, you should add a few additional items for flavor and texture. Cheeses like Gorgonzola, Parmigiano, Gruyere or Comte are perfect for warm salads. These are all hearty cheeses in flavor and texture. You can crumble, shred or grate these cheeses right overtop as a final garnish, or you can add them in larger portions by placing a large chunk overtop the warm vegetables and letting it slightly melt. Additionally, seeds and dried fruits, such as sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds or raisins, are great for adding texture. Be sure to keep similar flavor profiles in mind throughout the salad; you don't want to add too many ingredients that go off in too many different flavors.

Dressing

You have two options for the dressing: warm or cold. The ingredients in your warm salad can help determine if a cold or warm dressing is more suitable. A warm bacon dressing is a classic topping for a spinach salad, so for a first-time warm salad, this might be the way to go. You can also do a simple warm oil-and-vinegar dressing overtop a fresh veggie salad to highlight the wonderful flavors of the winter vegetables. A cold yogurt- or mayonnaise-based dressing will work for a salad with heavy protein like pork, chicken or lamb. If you already have a warm vegetable base topped with a warm protein, adding a chilled dressing will be just perfect to create a unique sensation in your mouth.

Keeping balance

What's most important when preparing your warm winter salad is that you keep balance in flavors, textures and temperatures. First, make sure your vegetables pair well with your fruit or cheeses and your dressing. The flavors should blend well, but you should also be able to taste each individual ingredient without masking flavors. As far as textures go, a salad should have a nice blend of silky, crunchy, even chewy mouthfeels. Don't add too much of one or the other texture to get a nice balance of each per bite. Finally, temperature is of course a concern in a warm salad. You definitely don't want steaming-hot vegetables or proteins; you want to shoot for just warm. Let your ingredients cool off a little before mixing them together. However, if you're using leafy greens, be sure they don't wilt and lose their color before being served.

  4. Remove the rosemary sprigs from the tenderloin, then slice the tenderloin into 1/4-inch-thick slices, and place it on top of the salad. Drizzle with dressing, and serve.

Never heard of a baby sprinkle? Instead of "showering" the mother with gifts, as in a baby shower, you "sprinkle" her with just a few necessities. As the name suggests, a sprinkle is a light shower. If the child is a second or third child, mothers typically already have most of the supplies needed to care for a baby.

Sprinkle with the daily essentials

A sprinkle stocks repeat parents with basic replenishable items they'll need right away and go through quickly. For example: Diapers, diaper cream, baby bathroom essentials and wipes. New outfits, toys, bedding and books are lovely gifts too and guests of a sprinkle should not feel restricted from buying big ticket items, but a sprinkle is mostly about family and friends celebrating a new addition. If there is a big gap between children or a different gender is expected, a full baby shower might be in order, but always consult with the mother to see what she is comfortable with, what items are needed and create your invitation accordingly.

Since a baby sprinkle doesn't have the formality of a baby shower, it isn't necessary to go all out when compiling the guest list, decorating, catering, providing entertainment and offering baby shower favors. A coed celebration with children is perfectly acceptable in the case of a sprinkle, so that the expecting mom's husband and child/children can be there, too.

What's a shower without games?

Games can liven up a party and break the ice and most guests will expect to play a game or two, but leave this the mother's discretion. One fun game to consider and a great way to include big brother- or sister-to-be is to ask guests to write their best advice for the sibling on a 3x5 card, which can make a nice keepsake book. Another game for repeat parents is “Remember When"— where guests share stories of their personal experiences raising their children and/or of pregnancy. These can be categorized into “funny,” “embarrassing,” or “sweet,” among others and the mommy-to-be plays judge as to who gave the best stories in each category. This game is great for gleaning a few tidbits of advice about parenthood.

Whatever you do, don't forget older siblings!

A new baby is very exciting, but it can also be very worrisome for a child. Some simple ways you can help ease their insecurities are by including the name of older siblings on the invitations, give the big brother or sister a special role at the sprinkle or a project they can be in charge of, encourage guests to greet the older sibling and if you are hosting a Meet and Greet sprinkle, allow the older sibling to introduce the new baby. A small gift will also go a long way. Becoming a new mom for a second time is always exciting and a sprinkle is a perfect way to celebrate!
