Margaret Cho plays the 'rice card' at the Golden Globes — was it racist?

0
0

In a bit that was meant to mock the whole Sony e-mail hack/The Interview uproar, Cho played the uber-serious North Korean — complete with uniform, teen mag featuring Kim Jong-un on the cover and pale white makeup — in a little reprise of her Kim Jong-un/Kim Jong-il from Tina Fey's 30 Rock.

While Fey, Cho and Amy Poehler meant it to be satirical, some saw it as something much more insidious: racism.

But today, Cho smacked back at those people who don't understand the difference between racism and satire.

"I'm of North and South Korean descent, and I do impressions of my family and my work all the time, and this is just another example of that," she told BuzzFeed. "I am from this culture. I am from this tribe. And so I'm able to comment on it.

"I can do whatever I want when it comes to Koreans — North Koreans, South Koreans. I'm not playing the race card, I'm playing the rice card. I'm the only person in the world, probably, that can make these jokes and not be placed in a labor camp.

"I feel if there's negativity, it's other people's judgments about what they feel that Asian-Americans are allowed to do, really," she said. "You're putting expectations on us that we have to remain Asian-American, that we can't actually play people from Asia. When we have British people playing American icons, there's no backlash. But for Asian-Americans, it's a very particular set of expectations that we are set to maintain, and that in itself is racist."

Why The Bachelor girls riding tractors in bikinis shouldn't be on TV

0
0

We get it. Season 19 Bachelor, Chris Soules, is a farmer, so that means this season will be themed with help from lots of cowboy boots, hay bales and cutoff shorts.

More: Chris Soules is in love before The Bachelor even starts, but with whom?

But what were the producers thinking when they decided the girls should wear bikinis and race around on tractors?

They were thinking about ratings. And they weren't thinking about the women.

The Bachelor

In a cultural climate that is so sensitive to the depiction of women and men on television, I think the reality show's decision to go forward with this group "date" was far from a good one. In the wake of Miss America deciding to eliminate the bikini portion of its competition and Marvel changing Thor's gender, The Bachelor should be more conscious of the message it is sending to young women across the nation.

More: The Bachelor — amazing facts about the 30 contestants you must know

Girls shouldn't think they need to flaunt their bodies in order to win a man's attention. And, as it's the first group date, that's exactly the message the show is sending.

The Bachelor Season 19

Furthermore, the show is rubbing salt in the wound during the episode in how it handles the news that Ashley I. is a virgin. And Mackenzie thinks that's great, not because Ashley I. has some morals, but because "men love virgins." Mackenzie, who is only 21, might have a lot of growing up to do despite having a son if she thinks like this. We hope Chris doesn't go for Ashley I. purely for the reason that she's "super pretty, you have a good personality and you're a virgin."

The Bachelor Season 19 Episode 2 Sneak peek

The Bachelor Season 19 Episode 2 Sneak peek

I'm all for a good tractor race, but why did the girls need to be in bikinis? Come on, ABC, we're better than this. Stop objectifying the ladies and start depicting relationships that young viewers can look up to and use as a healthy basis for their own lives. That is far from the show we're seeing right now.

The Bachelor airs tonight at 8/7c on ABC.

Do you agree that this "date" objectifies the women and portrays dating in a negative way?

Eminem makes a dying teen's final wish come true

Seventeen-year-old Gage Garmo has a rare form of bone cancer and is spending his last days at home, but friends knew how badly he wanted to meet his idol. They started spreading the word through social media, then the local news picked up the story and it wound up drawing the attention of Rainbow Connection, a Michigan-based organization that grants final wishes to local kids.

The group's spokesperson, Ingrid Todt, explained what happened when Eminem walked into the house. "Gage sat up with a grin on his face. His family hadn't seen their son do that in such a long time."

Rapper and Shady Records label mate, Royce da 5'9", was on hand for the special meeting, and he shared his thoughts about the special moment on Instagram.

"It was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen," Todt said. "The stars aligned, and Gage's wish came true."

Added Rainbow Connection executive director, Mary Grace McCarter, "We're so glad we were able to reach Eminem's people and they were able to respond, and Eminem was able on such short notice to go and see this boy in his own home. It says something about everybody, really. I hope all the students and friends of Gage feel good about their well-wishes too."

Eminem has not publicly commented on the visit.

6 Celebs speak out on what they want for the women of Hollywood in 2015 (VIDEO)

From Joanne Froggatt's plight to make sure survivors of rape are heard, to Patricia Arquette honoring all of the strong single mothers of the world, and back to Amy Adams recognizing her peers who serve as awesome female role models to her own 4-year-old daughter, this year's festivities were all about women inspiring women.

Maggie Gyllenhaal used her emotional speech to give a shout-out to Hollywood for starting to create more complex roles for women. "When I look around the room at the women who are in here and I think about the performances I've watched this year, what I see actually are women who are sometimes powerful, sometimes not, sometimes sexy, sometimes not, sometimes honorable, sometimes not, and what I think is new is the wealth of roles for actual women in television and film," said Gyllenhaal. "That's what I think is revolutionary, evolutionary, and that's what's turning me on."

More: 7 Times women were asked shallow questions on the Golden Globes red carpet

Gyllenhaal very eloquently summed up the changes that people are beginning to notice in television and film. SheKnows caught up with some celebs after Sunday's big event who agreed with Gyllenhaal's assessment and have high hopes for the future of women in film. Catt Sadler, Laura Vandervoort, Grace Helbig, Azie Tesfai and the producers of Jane the Virgin chatted with us about their pride in the way Hollywood is heading and how they are more than happy to help fan flames of female empowerment.

"I hope for the women in Hollywood to keep doing what they're doing," said E!'s Sadler. "I feel like there's this real resurgence of really strong, powerful roles. Julianne Moore is an example of that. What a hero. An intelligent, beautiful, accomplished woman. She won tonight and for me fuels the fire for the woman in all of us who has a lot to get done, regardless of the boundaries that we all have to survive in, the limitations and what not."

More: Giuliana Rancic was viciously attacked for her appearance at the Golden Globes (PHOTOS)

Vandervoort, of Syfy's Bitten, echoed Sadler's sentiments about keeping the ball rolling. "More women," the actress said of what she wants for females in 2015. "Leading women. I want to see women doing flawed characters, strong characters. Just more of that. I'm so proud of what women have done this year and Meryl Streep is everyone's role model. So if we could have more Meryl Streeps in the world, that would be amazing. Women struggle with being taken seriously sometimes... which is why I try to do a lot of the stronger women who are in action."

Tesfai, who plays Nadine Hansan on Golden Globe-lauded Jane the Virgin, is justifiably excited to be part of an amazing show that is smashing through walls in Hollywood. "Coming from the Jane family, our showrunner is a woman, 80 percent of our writers are women," said Tesfai. "Jennie Urman, our showrunner, is very women-oriented and for us to be nominated tonight, I think just shows that women are brilliant and can raise that bar and come from a place of emotion and love and be technically talented and with that combined is so powerful." Tesfai did note, however, that our work to make women viewed as equals is not completely done. "I do think there is a stereotype that they're not as capable. I think the only way to break through that is to show capable work."

Jane the Virgin producers, Gary Pearl and Jorge Granier, share Tesfai's warm fuzzy feeling for the Jane family and how it's an amazing example of what women are capable of, but said they feel sexism in Hollywood follows a law of attraction of sorts. "Sexism exists in life, but it starts with the individual," they said. "If the individual man or woman is willing to accept that, then it will exist for them forever. When you look at someone like Gina [Rodriguez], who looks at it and says, 'This isn't the world I want,' she doesn't attract that.  [We] don't attract people who still live in that old world."

And while Pearl and Granier feel sexism isn't real for those who don't want it to be, YouTube sensation, Helbig, is beyond considering that inequality factors into her work at all. "I consider myself a person in comedy," Helbig said. "My perspective just comes from a female point of view because I'm a lady. So I hope that everyone continues to succeed and find cool stuff to do."

How do you feel about the future of women in film?

6 Things to know about Topher Grace's fiancée, Ashley Hinshaw

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis (otherwise known as Kelso and Jackie) welcomed their first child last fall and Laura Prepon is still riding high on the success of her Netflix hit show, Orange Is the New Black. Now, Topher Grace is engaged!

Grace and his girlfriend of one year, Ashley Hinshaw, showed up to the Art of Elysium Heaven Gala in Los Angeles last weekend and Hinshaw seemed pretty happy to be showing off her new bling.

"She was totally in shock and so happy," a source told Us Weekly of the proposal, which reportedly went down last week.

Hinshaw may not be a household name, but the girl has a whole lot more going on than just being a celeb's fiancée. Here's a little more about her:

1. She's a thespian, too

And a successful working one at that. Hinshaw had a four-episode arc on True Blood and has also appeared on shows like Fringe and The League. In 2014, she starred in The Pyramid with fellow True Blood alum, Denis O'Hare, and according to Deadline, she's set to be in several episodes of True Detective next season.

2. She's a huge Bachelor fan

Apparently, a little part of Hinshaw dies each time a Bachelor couple calls it quits.

3. She's a relative newcomer to Hollywood

Hinshaw revealed in a recent Twitter Q&A that she's been acting pretty much her whole life, but the Hollywood scene is new to her. She hails from La Porte, Indiana, according to IMDb.

Which actor are you most excited to see return to the show?

Kelly Clarkson, is that you? Or is this Jimmy Eat World?

Admittedly, "Heartbeat Song" is catchy. It's a bit more bubblegum pop and less pop rock than some of Clarkson's past up-tempo tracks, but it's predictably addictive nonetheless.

More: Kelly Clarkson breathes a little soul into Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off"

Only, it sounds... familiar.

Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson

Listening to the song for the first time, we had a sneaking suspicion it bore an uncanny resemblance to something else. But what? Sure, it's a little Taylor Swift circa 1989 (the album, natch) with a little Jessie J thrown in the mix, but that's not it.

The chorus — "This is my heartbeat song/And I'm gonna play it/Been so long I forgot how to turn it up up up up all night long" — sounds just like another song.

After failing to pinpoint it the second go-round, a quick cursory search revealed that a smarty-pants at Vox had, in fact, managed to recall the source of the similar sound.

Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle," y'all.

C'mon, you remember the song. Released in 2001, the infectious track went on to become the band's biggest single to date.

The cadence to Clarkson's "Heartbeat Song" gives us major nostalgia for "The Middle," especially that line of the chorus we were never quite sure of but sang the hell out of anyway — "It just takes some time/Little... in the middle... hmm, hmm, ride/Everything, Everything will be just fine."

Jimmy Eat World

Jimmy Eat World

Don't hold back. You know you did it, too.

Still, it doesn't actually bother us that Clarkson's new song sounds so much like Jimmy Eat World's old one, for a few reasons.

More: Kelly Clarkson to get the ultimate honor at Musicians On Call

Firstly, we're just happy Clarkson is back to making music — we've missed you, Kel! Secondly, "The Middle" is still our jam, so anything that sounds like it is A-OK with us. Third, uh, we don't hate it. And by that, we totally mean we'll be scaring other commuters by belting it out on the road every morning. See also: Best song for dance-cleaning, ever.

Fourth, Clarkson posted a teaser vid to Instagram showing that her too-cute-for-words daughter, River, is definitely a fan. How can you dislike anything with this kind of endorsement?

Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson

And, lastly, it's not as though she stole the song. Perhaps she's actually paying homage to the band with the subtle similarity.

"The Middle" must be Clarkson's jam, too.

When friends 'solve' your miscarriage by telling you to try again

0

I hadn't intended to get pregnant, and the news of my pregnancy came at an extremely challenging and inopportune time. But in the weeks between the positive test and my first sonogram, I came to love the life that was growing in the secret of my belly. She — although I had no idea if the baby was a boy or girl — was a promise for the future and my heart's unveiled desire.

She — my beautiful baby — had no heartbeat.

Tears burst from my eyes when I saw her unrealized life on the shady sonogram screen, and I wailed for my lost child, my lost promise. The sonographer, nurse and doctor all handed me tissues and stood in awkward silence. Inevitably, though, when the silence grew too heavy, they chimed in with some variation of the following most-reviled words:

"It's OK, honey, you can try for another."

No, I can't. The pregnancy was an accident and I can't just magically snap my fingers and wish that the father of my unborn dead baby would impregnate me again. She was an accident, and the thing about accidental pregnancies is that they are accidental. They cannot just happen again. The sudden and brilliant intrusion of an unexpected life in a dark season isn't so easily replicated.

Image: Mary McCoy

Just don't say those words to me as though another pregnancy could erase the pain and confusion of my dead baby. Another baby cannot erase the monumental ache of the loss of a child. Time might comfort those wounds and nurture the sting so that it doesn't command my attention at every moment of the day, but another baby cannot.

If you say those words to me — or to any mother who has lost a pregnancy or a child — you're wishing my dead baby and my grief away from the world because it's uncomfortable for you. It's not because it brings me comfort. Know that.

And if you really want to be a friend or a physician, sit with me in the stark light and let your only sound be weeping, for me and my dead baby.

During a recent trip to Sin City, the "Love Me Harder" collaborator was accused of punching a police officer in the face, Entertainment Weekly reports. The site says the incident happened early Saturday morning. According to EW, its reporters were told by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department that patrol officers responded to a call at 4:42 a.m. at the Cromwell Hotel, where they were asked to assist special events officers already on duty there with what sounds like a pretty good-sized brawl — it was described in the police report as a "large verbal or physical altercation."

According to EW, when officers arrived to the scene, the special events officers there were attempting to break up the crowd. One officer reportedly pulled The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, to the side, where the singer punched the officer in the head, according to reports. Then, the report continues, the responding patrol officers took The Weeknd into custody and booked him for misdemeanor battery of a protected person.

"She will always be part of our Dance family and we wish her continued success."

Macklemore's 'trash popping' parody on Sesame Street has us so confused

More: Macklemore brushes off anti-Semitic claims

Macklemore is a surprising guest to have on Sesame Street to begin with, but we honestly don't know what to think about the parody of "Thrift Shop" he performed with Oscar the Grouch on the show. It's all about hunting through the trash — to find something to wear. Um, what?

"I'm gonna pop some trash, only got seven bags in my trash can," the Sesame Street characters sing, while Macklemore dances behind them in his famously ridiculous "Thrift Shop" getup. "I'm shopping, looking for some rubbish. This is gross and awesome."

So, let us get this straight. Sesame Street, the beloved children's show that's been airing on public television for almost half a century, is using a song about shoplifting to create a parody about wearing garbage? Is that actually what's happening here?

More: 10 Celebrities who stand up for gay marriage

The lyrics only get weirder from that point.

"Wouldn't you like to rock a fish on your noodle?" asks Macklemore from a Sesame Street front porch.

"One grouch's trash: That's another grouch's outfit. I had a broken scooter, I bought a broken scooter," he continues. "I got a dented sax and a banged-up computer."

The song also lauds wearing "grouchy clothes" to "look deplorable" by wearing "fishy hats from the grouch shop down the street."

So, who even knows what's going on here. Part of the song is about wearing trash, part of it is about broken scooters and electronics, part of it is about shopping like a grouch — but it's all a pretty weird parody. Sure, it was written for toddlers. But Macklemore is one of the better musicians around, and with his progressive views about marriage equality, he's not a bad role model for kids. We just wish he could do better than this weird parody.

Is this CW show about to get canceled?

If you have invested your time and happiness in Arrow, Jane the Virgin, The 100, The Originals, The Vampire Diaries, Reign, The Flash or Supernatural, you can rest easy — all of these shows will make their way to our screens for another season come the fall.

However, if Hart of Dixie is your jam, you might not be so lucky. The perennial bubble show was conspicuously left off the list of renewals.

More: Rachel Bilson's baby name is fit for a (Disney) princess

When speaking about the other eight shows, Pedowitz noted their contribution to the network. "Each of these series have helped define what The CW is today, a network that is home to smart, provocative, quality programming, targeting a savvy adult audience."

None of these renewals are surprising, with each of the shows delivering viewers and/or acclaim. Supernatural will enter its 11th season, making it one of the longest-running shows currently on television. The Flash premiered to powerhouse ratings and its crossover with Arrow was the stuff superhero-themed dreams are made of. And Jane the Virgin is riding the wave of critical acclaim, not to mention its star, Gina Rodriguez, just nabbed a Golden Globe for her portrayal of the show's eponymous character — the network's first Golden Globe win!

Hart of Dixie, meanwhile, will begin airing on Fridays this week (it aired its first — and so far only — episode of Season 4 back in mid-December), a move that is never overtly positive. Per TVLine, Pedowitz insisted at the TCAs that this may "not necessarily" be its final season.

"We have to see the ratings. If [Dixie] ends, [the fourth season's finale is] a great series finale. And if it doesn't end, it's a great season finale," he said.

More: Rachel Bilson gets an awesome, star-studded baby shower

However, those ratings have never really been all that stellar, and we can't imagine they're going to be much better on a Friday. Throw in the fact that Rachel Bilson's pregnancy limited the fourth season to 10 episodes as well as two of the show's stars, Scott Porter and Wilson Bethel, tweeting what appeared to be confirmation that we'll no longer be privy to the antics of the fictional town of Bluebell.

"And the sun sets on #BlueBell. Thanks for an amazing four years. #HartofDixie," Porter posted. While Bethel echoed his sentiments, saying, "Thank you, Wade Kinsella, for these four wonderful years. It's been a mighty pleasure knowing you."

It certainly seems like the writing is on the wall, but we can always live in hope.

There was also no word on a renewal for Beauty and the Beast, but we won't get too worried about this one just yet given its third season won't begin airing until later in the year.

10 Birth show ideas inspired by outdoor childbirth reality TV

Born in the Wild

Born in the Wild

Right about now, you might be asking yourself, "What's so interesting about childbirth?" especially if you've popped out a baby or two. Of course, Born in the Wild is the double dog dare show of reality TV — they just had to do something different to get noticed.

In the show, you'll meet a variety of couples interested in home birth. But not just any home birth… a natural birth outside the four walls of their home.

One expecting mother Audrey Bird explains, "I’ve attended many births, dealt with many complications. We were very prepared, we didn’t anticipate anything going wrong that we couldn’t handle. I trust birth, I trust the process, I trust my body, I trust my husband, I trust my training. People have this idea that birth is so dangerous — birth in most cases is perfectly safe."

As a mother who has also had a home birth, I see where she's coming from. I can't say that I would ever personally squat down by a tree to get my birth on, but you can't deny the ratings appeal.

If my predictions are correct Born in the Wild is only the beginning. Here are 10 extreme birthing show ideas that would make for even better guilt-watching TV:

1. Born at the DMV

The lines are long, the place is crowded and you know you have hours to wait. Why not kill some time by updating your driver's license in the early stages of labor?

2. Born in the Starbucks Drive-Thru

The only place more crowded than the DMV is the Starbucks drive-thru at 8 a.m. on a Monday morning. Pro tip: Don't stop for a latte on your way to the hospital.

3. Call the Midwife: My Wife Is in the Minivan

Arrested Development

The car salesman may have left out this key detail when you signed the papers: Minivans are super roomy and great for birthin'.

4. Chick-fil-A Baby: Home Birth Edition

Chick-fil-A

The thing about a home birth is that you're going to want some delicious food the moment you finish pushing. Sadly, Chick-fil-A doesn't deliver… I'm sure you see where this is going.

5. I Knew I Was Pregnant

6. My Family Is Against My Home Birth

This destination made the list on Reddit world travelers' thread, where one tourist describes his experience in detail. "It really is just a big rock and not the country it technically claims to be. The hotel sucked. A car had washed up into the swimming pool. That was despite a very clear sign that you weren't supposed to throw your car off a cliff into the ocean. The food was disgusting, and I wasn't the only one who refused to eat it. Everyone who decided to eat it anyway got sick. I also got peed on by a monkey."

6. Leaning Tower of Pisa

Miley Cyrus' disturbing pics: Is it time for us to finally be concerned?

0
0

Since for all intents and purposes murdering Hannah Montana and leaving the vultures to pick at her cold, dead body, Miley Cyrus seems to be using sexuality as a goof — she's not using her sexuality to be sexy, she's using it to get people to talk about how over the top she's being.

We're getting a little afraid that "over the top" is rapidly becoming "out of control."

Miley Cyrus V Magazine

Image: Cheyne Thomas/V Magazine

In the latest issue of V magazine, Cyrus poses for a series of photos that look like Terry Richardson's wet dream. They all have a distinct barely-legal porn feeling to them — in one, only a fluff of perfectly placed soap suds prevents us from seeing if she goes full Brazilian (although, she does look like the vajazzling type) and there's a lot of nipple-baring. But none of it looks artful or confident or daring. In fact, like most of her Instagram pics, the photos look more frantic and chaotic than anything.

Miley Cyrus V Magazine 1a

Miley Cyrus V Magazine 1a

If taken by themselves, it might not be so bad, but consider photos obtained by the National Enquirer (yes, yes, but you'd be surprised by how often they're right) that show Cyrus at a recording studio allegedly surrounded by drugs and paraphernalia.

The pics show Cyrus chilling with a pair of headphones on, looking at her laptop, and on a table in front of her there are large rolling papers, a rolled-up dollar of unknown denomination, a small vial of white powder and a pile of what looks like marijuana.

It's no secret that Cyrus loves to toke — she has never been shy about that — but the harder stuff leaves us worried for her, especially considering the photo she posted right after the so-called cocaine pics leaked.

Miley Cyrus bloody nose 1a

Miley Cyrus bloody nose 1a

So here's what we're worried about: This isn't some brilliant marketing ploy and it's not a strangely manufactured image. We're worried that the scary truth is she needs help, and needs it fast.

What caused Ann Curry to exit NBC early?

Curry was a fan favorite at NBC's Today since she started the hosting gig in 1997. In 2012, she transitioned to a different position with NBC News.

More: Matt Lauer blames bad reputation on lazy media

"I am sincerely grateful to NBC News for allowing me to offer viewers a vast and diverse body of work," Curry said in a statement, according to the Los Angeles Times. "It has been a privilege to work with so many good and talented people at the network and I look forward to what we will do ahead."

The past few years haven't been easy for Curry at the network. After replacing Meredith Vieira as coanchor in June 2011, ratings dipped as it became clear that Curry and fellow coanchor, Matt Lauer, weren't jiving as a team.

More: Who should play Ann Curry, Matt Lauer in the new Lifetime movie?

After a tearful and emotional goodbye, Curry was replaced as coanchor by Savannah Guthrie. The sudden replacement didn't bode well for Today, NBC or Matt Lauer, who was viewed as the villain by a lot of people upset about Curry's replacement.

Ann Curry Today show goodbye in 2012

Morning show competitor, Good Morning America, managed to trump Today in the ratings following Curry's replacement and it has remained in the top spot since.

Curry, on the other hand, was given her own production unit covering international stories, but it seems like her work — after so long on the show — failed to garner the recognition it once received.

More: Dirty details of Ann Curry's tortuous last days on Today

Curry is expected to leave NBC to become the founder of her own media startup, which is reportedly going to focus on international news like her position at NBC News.

"This is about reaching for the edge of the future in journalism, which we know is undergoing an irrevocable transition," Curry continued in the statement about her future plans. "I am excited about working to become a valuable link between traditional media and what is to come."

According to USA Today, the startup will be seeded by NBCUniversal but will allow her to report on any platform and on any network.

Are you surprised to hear Ann Curry is leaving NBC News early?
