What to expect when you're not expecting

Although Teen Mom may be out to convince us that getting pregnant is as easy as a few wine coolers, some bad decisions and a pimply-faced partner, not everyone is so lucky.

In the great irony of life as a woman, infertility is often blamed on many different reasons that often rest on her shoulders: "You're too stressed!" Or "You're not eating well enough." Or "You just need to relax."

Of course, we know now that infertility isn't a divine punishment for women's sins or a sign from the heavens, but a condition with many different causes, some not even fully understood yet.

1. Physical causes

"Often couples present with a combination of female and male factors," notes Dr. Jamie Morris of Reproductive Medicine Associates of New Jersey (RMANJ). With so many planets that must come in alignment perfectly in order to achieve pregnancy, honestly it's surprising that anyone can ever get pregnant. Among physical deficiencies like sperm abnormalities and ovulatory dysfunction, Dr. Morris states that the No. 1 reason she sees for infertility is diminished ovarian reserve, or in other words, a decreased supply of eggs in a woman's body. "This happens when the quantity and quality of the woman’s eggs are reduced, and can occur from a variety of reasons," she goes on to explain, with the most common cause of a reduced egg supply being advancing age.

2. Weight changes

Like many things in life, a woman's weight is often blamed for infertility, but Dr. Morris explains that it's actually large shifts in weight— either a loss or a gain — that are likely to lead to problems conceiving. "Having and maintaining a healthy diet is very important for overall health and well-being," she notes. "Sustaining a healthy weight and not being under or over weight, is especially vital for people trying to conceive."

3. Damaged sperm count

When I came across this radiation blocking underwear that promises to block radiation that may be damaging sperm with an invisible force field, I thought it was a joke. But it turns out, it's not. Dr. Morris explains that a Sept. 2014 article in the journal Environment International suggested that mobile phone use does have a negative effect on sperm count. "However, the impact on clinical infertility has still not been studied so we don’t have definitive results," she cautions. She also mentions that other agents, such as chemotherapy, can damage sperm.

4. Pelvic disorders

Many couples wait six months to a year before seeking help from a specialist to conceive, but Dr. Morris warns that treatment should not be delayed, especially with any known history that could cause a problem. "If a woman is having irregular menstrual cycles, or has a known history of a pelvic disorder such as severe endometriosis or fallopian tubal blockage, or has a medical condition, then she may want to seek out an earlier evaluation," she says. She also mentions that any pelvic surgeries, chemotherapy or radiation treatment or abnormal semen analysis warrants a trip to the doctor's earlier rather than later. Time can be of the essence when it comes to conception.

5. Age

Unfortunately, we can't escape this one. In the end, age always gets us. "It is not a little-known cause but it is an under acknowledged reason women have difficulty conceiving," says Dr. Morris. "Even though it is a well-documented fact that as women age their fertility declines, most patients still don’t realize that it may be harder to get pregnant just because of age."

Dr. Morris advises that a woman under 35 years of age should seek treatment if she has been attempting conception for one year without success while a woman over 35 years of age should seek treatment after six months of failed attempts at conception. "With new technologies offering oocyte cryopreservation (egg freezing), women can now have more choices about their reproductive time line with some planning," she notes.

What's the real meaning behind Madonna's #rebelheart photos?

The following day, she posted a series of Instagram photos even her fans are having a hard time wrapping their heads around.

More: Madonna loses fans after altering photos of MLK and Nelson Mandela (PHOTOS)

In the Photoshopped snaps, Madonna transposes the art from the cover of her album Rebel Heart — which features her face bound in black cording — onto images of iconic figures Bob Marley, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr.

The reaction? Well, let's just say fans are exercising their rebel hearts by lashing out at Madge over the perceived publicity stunt. But let's talk about the real meaning behind Madonna's #rebelheart photos.

More: Madonna's latest Instagram caption reads: 'This is artistic rape!!'

In actuality, Marley, Mandela and King Jr. aren't the only historical figures the pop star gave the #rebelheart treatment.

Two days before Christmas, Madonna posted this picture of artist Frida Kahlo.

Madonna 1

Madonna 1

The caption — "One of my favorite Rebel Hearts!" — makes it clear this is someone Madonna admires and respects.

On Dec. 30, it was Jesus' turn.

Madonna 2

Madonna 2

She captioned the pic, "One of the first #rebelhearts." Then, just two days ago, she posted a similarly Photoshopped version of blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe, proclaiming her "The most beautiful #rebelheart."

Madonna 3

Madonna 3

And although many people were none too pleased at the post of Jesus, it wasn't until Madonna revealed her #rebelheart interpretation of the black civil rights icons that social media collectively lost its cool.

I get it. I mean, racial tension in this country sadly seems to be at a fever pitch right now, so the fact that Madonna is using images of prominent black civil rights icons could easily be perceived as a distasteful marketing ploy.

However, as ill-timed as this string of photos seems to be, the meaning behind Madonna's #rebelhearts pics seems to be, well, rebellion.

I imagine the black wire binding her face is symbolic of the repression of expectations — being tied down and even suffocated by the limitiations society imposes. A person who has a rebel heart is someone who pushes the boundaries... who fights to free themselves from the binding.

In that respect, Madonna fits the bill. I don't think anyone can argue that she hasn't taken a stand over the years for feminism and against sexual repression and against censorship.

She obviously respects men like Marley and Mandela and King Jr. and admires how they stood up for what they believed in. She likely relates to them, too.

Just as she relates to Marilyn Monroe and Frida Kahlo.

While I understand the problem that people have with Madonna — a musician — comparing herself to these men who impacted the world in such profound ways, I'm not entirely convinced Madonna deserves all the ire being tossed her way.

More: Justin Timberlake sparks outrage for calling Madonna his ninja

Isn't it possible she was simply trying to pay these greats respect? Are are we so cynical that we can't fathom the real meaning behind her #rebelheart campaign might be about more than just album sales?

What do you think? Was Madonna totally out of line, or was she just honoring these iconic figures?

According to NBC news, Dickens — along with his band, the Country Boys — was credited with bridging the gap between rock and country music by being one of the first country stars to embrace the electric guitar. He died Friday in a Nashville, Tennessee, hospital of a cardiac arrest.

Dickens joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1948 and remained a member until his death. He most recently performed at the Opry less than two weeks ago, on Dec. 20, the day after his 94th birthday.

Short-statured Dickens, who also explained his nickname by saying, "I'm Little Jimmy Dickens, or Willie Nelson after taxes," had one No. 1 hit during his long, storied music career: "May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose," recorded in 1965. It incorporated electric and pedal steel guitars in its hillbilly sound, revitalizing classic bluegrass when rock music was overtaking its popularity.

But despite changing the sound of bluegrass, Dickens never completely left behind the hillbilly sound that had made him famous. He was a hero to generations of country stars, including George Jones, one of country music's most famous voices, who dedicated an entire album to Dickens in 1964: George Jones Sings Like the Dickens.

A 1983 inudctee into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Dickens was remembered by fellow country stars and others on Twitter and other social media Friday. The Grand Ole Opry released a statement following his death, saying, "The Grand Ole Opry did not have a better friend than Little Jimmy. He loved the audience and his Opry family, and all of us loved him back. He was a one-of-kind entertainer and a great soul whose spirit will live on for years to come."

#CongratsOnTheBabyNiall: Wait, what’s happening on Twitter right now?

More: 1D's Niall Horan singing in his Skivvies is making our Christmas very merry

The boy band's online "fandom" is tens of millions strong. It's made a name for itself all year for hijacking Twitter's trending section by making its own hashtags go viral. And we're not talking standard, predictable hashtags — Directioners are known for taking the weirdest, most esoteric things and tweeting the crap out of them.

And with the new year only a couple days old, they've already done it again. #CongratsOnTheBabyNiall started trending worldwide Friday and, by late Friday night, showed no signs of slowing down.

One Direction 1

One Direction 1

According to Epoch Times, the hashtag is just a big joke, and some of the Directioners' tweets allude to their confusing ability to make literally anything trend.

One Direction 2

One Direction 2

Now that we know Niall Horan is not, in fact, having a baby, let's take a look at some of the weirdest examples of hashtags that only a Directioner would understand:

#NiallTakeASelfieWithTheo

What Directioners want, Directioners get — they've proven that time and time again, like when they wanted Niall to take a selfie with his new nephew, Theo. The hashtag went viral, and — you guessed it! — Niall took a selfie with his new nephew.

It turns out Directioners' hashtags aren't all weird. They got #CongratsJohannah trending when Louis Tomlinson's mom, Johannah, got married. Cute!

But seriously, most of their hashtags are pretty weird, like #Larryshippersonstrike, which was meant to organize groups who think Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles have a secret relationship — "Larryshippers" — and get them to unfollow One Direction's social media accounts to protest the stars' supposedly keeping their relationship under wraps.

Gone with the Wind turns 75: Super fans share their favorite memories

$

The costumes, the spectacle, the curtains — Gone with the Wind is turning 75 and all I want to do is sit on the porch sipping lemonade with a Clark Gable look-alike and watch the movie on repeat.

The first time I saw Gone with the Wind, I was 12, and duly unimpressed. It was playing on TV and my parents were convinced that watching the nearly four-hour-long Civil War romance would be good for me. Rather than give in to their ridiculous suggestion that I "enjoy" the film, I sighed and rolled my eyes and fidgeted mercilessly until they excused me for being a completely unbearable teenager. I'm sure they enjoyed the movie much more without me.

More: QUIZ: How well do you know your classic novels?

But I had no idea what I was missing. In my obstinance, I had removed myself completely from the film's cinematic scope, its hypnotizing score, and its incredibly maddening characters, and it wasn't until college that I'd find myself giving the movie another chance — and only then because I had to watch it for film studies class.

I'll never forget the feeling that the movie's opening scene conveyed. From the first frame to the last, I was completely mesmerized by the camera work and the beautiful, non-CGI settings. The score was haunting and perfectly suited the backdrop reeking of man's inhumanity to man. And I'll never forget holding my breath in outrage as Rhett leaves Scarlett with a wagon full of tragic people to care for, so that he can (finally) join the battle.

Which brings me to Scarlett. Complicated, miserable, defiant, manipulative, resourceful and continually contrary Scarlett.

Scarlett O'Hara is an inspiration — and not because she's a "good" person or a feminist or anything admirable like that. No, Scarlett is a deeply flawed person who makes a series of unbelievably frustrating choices (Ashley, anybody?) that left me alternately wanting to save her or throw her from Tara's highest roof. But here's the thing — she's a total survivor! And as a woman and a storyteller, I wish there were more women like her on screen today.

More: 15 Strongest, most jaw-dropping and fearless female performances of 2014

Scarlett is not neat. She is not tidy. She does not love who she is supposed to love when she's supposed to love them. She's selfish and weak when you think she oughtn't be, but then she's selfless and strong when you expect her to fall apart. She's not superwoman, but she's also not a terrible woman — she's just one woman trying to make the best of a series of really unfortunate events. And that's a woman that, tragically, we don't get to see on screen very often.

As someone who has admittedly has seen one too many rom-coms in her youth, Scarlett O'Hara brought the ridiculousness and futility of those films into stark focus against the complexity and breadth of her role. As the credits rolled, I was left completely stunned by both Vivien Leigh's performance, and by the roller coaster of emotions I'd felt as I alternately cheered and cursed Scarlett.

More: Netflix adds 33 shows and movies in January, cuts 60 favorites

We sat down with a few Gone with the Wind super fans (and one who is not a super fan) and got their take on the movie. The fact that the film can still have such an effect on people 75 years later is a testament to the power of the film. We're not saying you have to watch the movie every year like one of our super fans, Allison English, does, or that we expect you to sit through it 25 times like William Knight has, but if you haven't seen Gone with the Wind, you really ought to. You might be surprised by just how powerful it still is.

Iggy Azalea announces TMJ diagnosis: What does it mean?

$

Iggy Azalea TMJ

Iggy Azalea TMJ

What is TMJ?

TMJ is a jaw joint condition that involves pain and soreness from damage within the jaw joint. Along with TMJ, the muscles of the face and neck can hurt. TMJ symptoms include headaches, jaw popping or clicking, neck pain, pain or tenderness in the face, eyes, neck, head, your jaw locking, and pain when you chew or open wide.

How do I know if I have TMJ?

TMJ is poorly understood by doctors and dentists alike. Many healthcare practitioners are not trained to treat it. It’s not an acute disease that goes away with antibiotics — it's a chronic condition you have for the rest of your life.

There's really no surgical cure for TMJ, so it's a matter of managing it and not creating further damage to the jaw joint, which would create more pain. TMJ requires a lifetime of management.

Most TMJ is caused by grinding and clenching, which is an indicator for sleep apnea — more on that in a bit.

How is TMJ treated?

If you have TMJ pain, it's not a clear-cut path to managing and reversing those symptoms.

In many cases, giving your jaw joint a break can help relieve symptoms — like dropping a chewing gum habit or cutting your food into smaller bites. A lot of us stress and abuse our jaw joint without even realizing it and these overworked muscles and joint just need a rest.

Checking your stress levels, using muscle relaxation exercises, medical marijuana, acupuncture and a TMJ support group are all great ways of treating your symptoms, but you'll have to determine what works best for you and experiment with different treatments.

It is now understood that grinding and clenching are an innate, instinctual response by the body to a small or collapsed airway. Grinding and clenching open your airway and save you at night, but there's a cost — clenching and grinding every night damage the jaw joint and your teeth, leading to TMJ symptoms.

This is why, if you have TMJ symptoms or grind your teeth, it's imperative you get a sleep study.

A mandibular advancement device, which is made by your dentist and pushes the jaw forward with a retainer-like device worn while you sleep, positions the jaw in such a way that your airway is kept open while you sleep. This eliminates the need to grind and prevents any further wear and tear on the jaw joint and your teeth.

In more severe cases of sleep apnea, a CPAP will be required because a mandibular advancement device alone may not be able to fix it.

Is TMJ life threatening?

It can be, yes. If TMJ symptoms are a result of grinding and clenching at night, this is very likely an indicator for sleep apnea. A lifetime of even mild sleep apnea, untreated, can cause dementia, high blood pressure, heart damage, diabetes, anxiety, a lack of focus, erectile dysfunction, and problems with long term memory consolidation.

If you have TMJ symptoms, you must:

Get a sleep study. Young people with TMJ symptoms need to be getting screened for sleep apnea. Even mild sleep apnea can build up over the years to some serious side effects.

See a dentist and have your bite checked. Make sure there are no occlusion issues. Occlusion is how your teeth mesh together and poor occlusion can cause TMJ.

Deal with it. Left unchecked, your joint will continue to be damaged. TMJ is difficult to cope with as the headaches and facial pain cause you lose your ability to focus.

In Iggy's case, the music industry requires her to be at the top of her game at all times. You can't be at your peak with chronic TMJ symptoms. TMJ, left untreated, will also affect her ability to speak and rap, as it becomes painful to open your mouth when your muscles are cramped. TMJ can also cause a change in facial expressions, and as a public figure, this could affect how people respond to her. The stress of dealing with chronic pain is incredibly distracting.

We take our jaw joint and facial muscles for granted every day when we chew our meal or smile — these muscles are constantly in motion, even at night. How much can one little joint take? Be kind to your jaw joint — it will affect everything from how you speak, look, function and even digest your food.

Slow Cooker Sunday: Classic cioppino is a seafood stew done right

Dish out a bowl of classic cioppino made the easy way... in the slow cooker

The slow cooker is your friend when it comes to making cioppino, so give it a go at home. This fish stew is full of seafood and veggies, and it makes a hearty, delicious meal, with pretty much no fuss thanks to the slow cooker.

What makes this dish nice is that you can choose the type of hearty white fish you'd like to use: cod, striped sea bass or halibut. Then add frozen, precooked shrimp and either (or both!) precooked, canned clams or crabmeat at the very end. Cleanup is a cinch too.

Slow cooker classic cioppino recipe

This dish might get mispronounced, but there's no question about its robust flavor and heartiness. This is a meal great for a crowd or for your family on a cold night. Toss it together the night before (or early in the day), and let it cook to perfection.

Serves 4-6

Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 10-12 hours | Total time: 10-12 hours 10 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 pound hearty white fish (cod, striped sea bass, halibut), cut into 2-inch cubes
  • 1 green bell pepper, seeds and membrane removed, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, ends trimmed, diced
  • 2 carrots, peeled, ends trimmed, cut into thin rounds
  • 1 large baking potato, peeled and cut into even, 1-inch cubes

  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 pound frozen jumbo shrimp, thawed, tails removed
  • 4 ounces cooked crabmeat
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce, more or less to taste
  • Grated Parmesan cheese, as garnish

Directions:

  1. To the slow cooker, add the fish, bell pepper, celery, carrots, potato, onion and garlic.
  2. Add the broth, tomatoes (in their juices), tomato juice, water, salt, black pepper, oregano, rosemary and red pepper to the mixture.
  3. Cook on low heat, covered, for 10 to 12 hours.

ARIES (March 20-April 19)

Act fast because that window of opportunity will only be open from Jan. 6 to noon of Jan. 8. This is when you’ll receive an invite or offer to travel outside your usual stomping grounds. It will prove to be both educational and enlightening. It may seem like a fluke, but there’s so much more going on than you know. In fact, this could lead to a change in outlook, philosophy or residence. All of this from such a trivial event, you ask? Big adventures come in small packages when there’s a grand trine in fire involved.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

There are exciting developments taking place just outside your field of vision. It’s tempting to search for them, but don’t. You have Jupiter angular in your solar horoscope, which means that you can sit back and let all the good fortune come to you. Indeed, the less you do, the better because you want developments to unfold organically on their own. Otherwise, your impatience could lead you to kill the goose that’s laying all of these golden eggs by selling too early or cashing in on something right when it’s about to make a big jump in value.

Just because the road is blocked for now doesn't mean it always will be. If anything, you respond more resourcefully to situations that remain beyond your grasp than you do to ones in easy reach. News that you were a runner-up for a long-sought prize shouldn’t dishearten you. It should embolden you because it means you made the right impressions with the right people, and you’re someone that people are talking about. Keep this in mind when you try again. The week of April 5 would be the perfect time to resubmit a bid, proposal or application.

You may be surprised by the unexpected turnabout in fortune that takes place this week. It’s so out of the blue that you might be tempted to not take it seriously. You should take it seriously. The unique alignment of Saturn, Uranus and Jupiter on Tuesday and Wednesday with your ruling planet, the Moon, playing such a pivotal role means that you can expect a dramatic breakthrough. This will alter the landscape significantly as you see your earning power transformed overnight. But keep in mind that breakthroughs are a dime a dozen. It’s what you do with them that matters most.

LEO (July 22-Aug. 22)

There’s a lot of fiery energy coursing through your horoscope this week, and that’s just the thing you need to banish the winter blues. Typically this is a low point of the year for you, but with the Moon in Leo conjoining Jupiter on Jan. 7, you’ll soon see prospects and opportunities appear before you. Now it may take until April 8 for you to make good on them, but just knowing that they lie there ahead in your future is enough to bolster confidence and embolden you to make the changes you’ve been wanting to make.

It may feel like you’ve reached a dead end at work, but nothing could be further from the truth. A Mercury/Saturn sextile on Jan. 5 shows you how to speak to a stick-in-the-mud supervisor, uncooperative coworker or pigheaded client. You won’t get anywhere by telling this person what he or she is doing wrong, but if you were to introduce your plans for change in easy-to-follow steps, then you’ll capture his or her attention. Think of laying down a trail of breadcrumbs that lead to the conclusions you want this person to make, and you’ll see progress where there was once gridlock.

You need to ask if you want to receive. The difficulty with being born under Venus (named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty) is that you feel like you can never just come out and say what it is you want. There’s something so rude and inappropriate about that. It’s why you’ll drop hints, suggestions and innuendos in hopes that the person you need help from will catch on. Do yourself a favor and just ask. The Moon/Jupiter conjunction on Jan. 7 shows that you’re surrounded by admirers who will happily jump to your aid.

ARIES (March 20-April 19)

You may surprise loved ones and friends with your uncharacteristic munificence. In fact, you'll be so generous of spirit that you could wind up making them uneasy. Now this isn't to say that you are typically hardheaded and hard-hearted, but you're not exactly the touchy-feely type either. Nevertheless a benevolent moon/Jupiter conjunction on Jan. 7 shows you extending the benefit of the doubt, picking up the check for someone else unprompted and even laughing off an unexpected setback. Is this new side of you here to stay? Anything's possible with Jupiter in Leo for eight more months.

That split between who you are deep inside and who you think you should be in order to achieve success often gets highlighted when the moon forms an opposition to Venus. Yet what makes the opposition on Jan. 6 so important is that it's the first time in a long time that you'll side with family over career. You've put in the long hours too many times to the detriment of your life at home and you need to reverse that equation. Ironically you'll make a lot more headway in your career now that you're being truer to yourself.

Sibling rivalry is as old as Cain and Abel and we all know what happened to them. There will always be someone who's prettier, smarter or more beloved. 7 Tips to cook and eat lighter after the holidays

1. First things first: Be sure to eat breakfast

Oatmeal-raisin cookie dough overnight oats are fab for breakfast

Running out the door without eating breakfast, with just your coffee in hand, might seem like a good way to cut calories, but it's not. Eating early in the day helps give your metabolism a boost, which helps produce enzymes to metabolize fat to lose weight.

Try this recipe for oatmeal-raisin cookie dough overnight oats. It might sound like dessert, but it's full of good-for-you ingredients and tastes great too.

2. Select a satisfying and healthy smoothie

You'll enjoy this mixed berry banana and nut oatmeal smoothie

It can be tempting to run to the corner juice or smoothie shop and grab (what you think is) a healthy drink to keep you full. Truth is, many smoothies and juices are full of sugars and fat (and sometimes who knows what else). When opting for a smoothie or juice, be sure to check the ingredients and choose those made with yogurt, nondairy milks and fresh or frozen fruit. Keep the calories and fat on the lower end, and be sure to include healthy ingredients that include protein and fiber.

Follow these tips to learn how to make a healthy smoothie, and consider this recipe for mixed berry, banana and nut oatmeal smoothie.

3. Reach for a few healthy snacks

Whip up a batch of healthy vegetable chips to snack on

Picking a healthy snack doesn't have to be difficult, but you should know how to choose wisely (not just the type of snack, but portions too). Check out these options for healthy snacks that will satisfy you. If you'd like to make your own crunchy, healthy snacks, check out these recipes for three homemade veggie chips.

4. Fill up on fiber

This is a convenient and tasty dish: slow cooker 3-bean butternut squash chili

Foods that are high in fiber have a list of benefits (like potentially reducing your risk for certain diseases and obesity). They also help you feel full faster and keep you satisfied longer. That's a good thing when it comes to eating more than you need or want. Pick whole grains, legumes (which includes beans), fruits and veggies for your fill of fiber. If you need extra help, check out these three tips to help you sneak fiber into your diet. And when you're ready for a tasty and filling meal, try this recipe for slow cooker three-bean butternut squash chili.

5. Go meatless… at least once a week

Going meatless can be super-tasty, like this dish for vegetarian green Thai curry

There are many benefits to cutting back on meat. Just ask the folks at the Meatless Monday Campaign. According to the organization, "going meatless once a week may reduce your risk of chronic preventable conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. And going meatless once a week can also help reduce our carbon footprint and save precious resources like fossil fuels and fresh water."

What a great way to really make an impact! You won't miss the meat in this delightful vegetarian green Thai curry.

6. Spice things up in the kitchen

Spicy and healthy: picy chicken curry-stuffed pitas with creamy yogurt sauce

When your food is seasoned well, you won't have to include ingredients that include fat, salt or sugar for flavor. Not only do seasonings and spices taste great, but they have health benefits too. Read about these seven super spices for super health. When mealtime rolls around, try this recipe for spicy chicken curry-stuffed pitas with creamy yogurt sauce.

7. Drink up… water, that is

Water doesn't have to be boring: try this recipe for cucumber lemon-mint infused water

Water is great for keeping you hydrated… duh! But it's also good for your skin, your kidneys and, ahem, for keeping your bowels working properly. Water can also help you feel full, and that can keep your calorie intake down. Water doesn't have to be boring. Give this recipe for cucumber lemon mint-infused water a try. Yum!

5 High-intensity workouts guaranteed to get your heart pumping

$

0

HIIT is a training method that alternates low- to moderate-intensity intervals with high-intensity intervals. The workouts consist of short, but intense, bursts of exercise with less intense exercise in between. The idea can be applied to most exercises, such as running or even squatting.

Interval training is considered to be more effective because the intensity allows your body to increase both its aerobic and anaerobic endurance, while burning an optimal amount of fat. HIIT is known for getting your heart pumping and metabolism burning. And the best part? You can squeeze in a HIIT workout in less than 20 minutes!

According to an article by The New York Times, past studies have shown that HIIT training "may improve aerobic fitness up to 10 times as much as moderate endurance training." Although studies are still being conducted, Martin Gibala, the chairman of the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster University and senior author of the study, said "'it would appear that there is something important, even essential, about the pulsative nature' of on-off HIIT training if you wish to reap sustained physiological improvements."

Of course, those benefits don't come without a few precautions as well. Steve Edwards, vice president of fitness and nutrition at Beachbody, said that some high-intensity workouts, such as P90X, are not intended for beginning exercisers.

"These were always meant to be 'graduate programs' from some of our other workouts," he told ABC News. "Our target audience may have been deconditioned when they started with us, but for P90X, we see them as someone who has been dedicated to another program for awhile and aspires to go further."

Edwards also mentioned that exercisers should "check with their doctors and not overdo it" before starting such workout programs, and the doctors agree.

Dr. Stephen Fealy, an orthopedic surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, told ABC News that he started seeing a spike in HIIT-related injuries over the recent years, mostly involving muscle sprains and tendon strains — particularly of the calf, chest and shoulder — which is a result of overusing explosive movements and heavy weights.

"I think these programs are quite good," Dr. Fealy said. "But if someone goes from couch to full throttle without any preparation, there's a good chance they're going to get hurt."

Moral of the story? If you're just starting out, high-intensity programs might not be right for you just yet. But, if you're already a workout warrior and looking to up your game, perhaps HIIT is just what you need.

Are Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden really getting married tonight?

$

The couple reportedly held a rehearsal dinner in Beverly Hills on Sunday and will tie the knot Monday, Jan. 6, 2015 at the bride's home just weeks after Diaz was spotted wearing what many have speculated to be an engagement ring.

"It happened a few nights ago," a Madden pal told People about the pre-Christmas proposal. "All of Benji's friends are aware and happy for him. Her mom is a fan of his as well and gave her blessing."

Spies spotted party rental trucks and loads of flowers being delivered to the couple's house Monday morning, and celebrity wedding planner Yifat Oren was seen entering the home — plus a huge tent has been erected in the backyard.

More: Nicole Ritchie says she's responsible for Cameron Diaz, Benji Madden coupling

"There is a lot of security and they are trying to keep the wedding hush-hush by telling neighbors that Cameron is having a pre-Golden Globes party tonight," another source told People. "It will start past dark tonight. They are setting things up in the lush backyard."

The couple has only been dating since May, but friends say they are a match made in heaven.

"Everyone thinks it's wild, but are so happy for them," a pal told Us Weekly. "Benji tends to fall in love easily, but this time it's for real and he landed a great girl. They obviously both make each other incredibly happy, and there's nothing better than that."

Congrats to the happy couple, and we want to see the pics tomorrow!

WalletHub recently released its list of the best and worst cities for singles. That is, even if you suck at the dating game, you may not be completely to blame — your city could be putting a damper on your dating ability, according to their data.

Want to know if you're stuck in a dating desert, or if your city is the prime place to find love? The following are the top 10 "best" and "worst" cities for singles:

After seeing how your area measures up, it may leave you feeling a little hopeless. Don't be — there is plenty you can do if you're living in an area that isn't exactly bustling with prospects. We reached out to some dating gurus to find out how to get a date no matter where you live.

1. Start living

"Follow a life of interest and passions," suggests John Keegan, a dating coach from New York City. "Design your life around enthusiasm. Join classes and groups that will better your life and also have other like-minded people in them." He said that fitness classes, language courses and other activities are a great way to meet like-minded people and enjoy life while you're at it.

2. Go online, but don't rely on it

Keegan advises not to make online dating the primary way to meet people. "It's very dangerous, because it withdraws you from being social, and real great people walk by you all day every day," he says. "You're missing them because you're too busy entertaining several people on the internet that you haven't even met and most likely don't have any chemistry with."

3. Embrace strangers

Keegan says the main reason people aren't meeting people in the desert or in a major metropolis is because they're closed off or they're not open to the people around them. "Be open, make eye contact, smile, wave, and say hello to easily connect with new people," he says. In fact, try to connect with at least five strangers a day, he adds. "It's so simple yet it can start off an amazing relationship."

Melani Robinson, a dating specialist and writer from New York City, agrees that it can pay off to pursue a stranger that you have some sort of connection with. "We randomly see someone we're attracted to, our eyes meet and we smile. Then we walk on by," she says. "Don't do that anymore." She says it's important to have the courage to approach the stranger, who is probably interested in you as well.

4. Forget the numbers

Laurie Davis, founder of eFlirt and author of Love @ First Click, said not to get too caught up in rankings like the one mentioned above — in other words, just because your city is on the list of "worst" places to date, or you think it should be, it doesn't really matter. "These things are statistic-based — the percentage of singles in a city, the ratio of men to women — but you don't fall in love because of numbers," Davis says. "I've seen women in some of the 'best' cities struggle and women in some of the 'worst' thrive."

Suzanne Oshima, a matchmaker at Dream Bachelor & Bachelorette in New York City, says it's important to get out of the mindset that your location is "bad."
"I find that when singles have that in their mind that it's 'bad,' they are using that as an excuse as to why they can't meet the right man and are setting themselves up for failure," she says. "No matter where you live, you can meet the right person, you just have to be more creative in ways to meet single men if your city is considered 'bad.'"

Barbecue chicken-stuffed sweet potatoes are a super easy dinner tonight

$
0
0

Baking or roasting sweet potatoes really brings out their naturally sweet flavor. And rather than cooking the chicken myself, I picked up a prepared rotisserie chicken from the grocery store, shredded it, then added my favorite barbecue sauce to it. Talk about a time-saver. To take it up one more notch, I whipped up an easy slaw topping using bagged broccoli slaw I already had on hand.

Not a fan of sweet potatoes or broccoli slaw? No problem! Simply use Idaho potatoes in place of the sweet potatoes and regular shredded cole slaw mix in place of the broccoli.

chicken stuffed sweet potatoes

Barbecue chicken-stuffed sweet potatoes with broccoli slaw recipe

Baked sweet potatoes are roasted until soft, then stuffed with shredded barbecue chicken and topped with creamy slaw for an easy, simple and healthy meal.

Serves 4

Prep time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 45 minutes | Total time: 1 hour

Ingredients:

  • 4 medium-size sweet potatoes, washed and dried
  • 2 chicken breasts from a rotisserie chicken, shredded
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1 cup apple cider slaw (recipe follows)
  • Fresh cilantro, for garnish

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Puncture each potato several times, and wrap in aluminum foil.
  2. Place the potatoes on a baking sheet, and roast in the oven for 45 minutes or until soft.
  3. Heat a skillet over medium heat, and add the chicken and barbecue sauce. Heat just until the sauce starts to simmer, then remove from the heat.
  4. Carefully remove the potatoes from the foil, slice through the middle lengthwise (but not all the way through), and place them on a serving plate.
  5. Divide the barbecue chicken among the potatoes, and top with the apple cider slaw.
  6. Garnish with cilantro, and serve warm.

Apple cider slaw recipe

Crunchy broccoli slaw is tossed in a creamy apple cider vinegar dressing and is perfect served on top of barbecue chicken-stuffed sweet potatoes. Let the slaw chill for several hours if possible. It really helps bring out the flavors, but a minimum of 30 minutes will also do the trick.

Serves 6

Prep time: 5 minutes | Inactive time: 30 minutes | Total time: 35 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup fat-free mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (or more if you desire a sweeter slaw)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 (12 ounce) bag broccoli slaw

Directions:

  1. In a bowl, combine the vinegar, mayonnaise, mustard and sugar, and season with salt and pepper. Taste the dressing, and adjust the flavor as needed.
  2. Add the bag of broccoli slaw to the mixture, and toss well.
  3. Chill for a minimum of 30 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
