15 Quotes by Feminist Celebrity of 2014 Emma Watson every woman should read

$
0
0

Watson snagged the honor by receiving the most votes in an online survey by the Ms. Foundation and Cosmopolitan — and the distinction didn't exactly surprise us.

We're still feeling inspired by Watson's stirring speech at the U.N. back in September, where she issued an emotional call to arms on behalf of the HeForShe campaign for gender equality.

More: To hell with football, let's talk about Emma Watson

But every woman (even those inadvertent feminists she spoke of in her speech) would be well served by reading these smart, powerful and — yes — feminist words from Watson.

1. "The more I spoke about feminism, the more I realized that fighting for women’s rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating. If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop."

2. "The saddest thing for a girl to do is to dumb herself down for a guy."

Emma Watson

3. "I want men to take up this mantle so that their daughters, sisters, and mothers can be free from prejudice, but also so that their sons have permission to be vulnerable and human too, reclaim those parts of themselves they abandoned, and in doing so, be a more true and complete version of themselves."

Emma Watson

4. "For the record, feminism by definition is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of political, economic and social equality of the sexes."

Emma Watson

Image: Daniel Deme/WENN

5. "I'm a feminist, but I think that romance has been taken away a bit for my generation. I think that what people connect with in novels is this idea of an overpowering, encompassing love — and it being more important and special than anything and everything else."

Emma Watson

Image: Dennis Van Tine/Future Image/WENN

6. "I'm going to do what I want to do. I'm going to be who I really am. I'm going to figure out what that is."

Emma Watson

Image: Daniel Deme/WENN

7. "I think it is right I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should be able to make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decisions that will affect my life. I think it is right that socially, I am afforded the same respect as men."

Emma Watson

Image: Dennis Van Tine/Future Image/WENN

8. "I've probably earned the right to screw up a few times. I don't want the fear of failure to stop me from doing what I really care about."

Emma Watson

Image: WENN

9. "I don't have perfect teeth. I'm not stick thin. I want to be the person who feels great in her body and can say that she loves it and doesn't want to change anything."

Emma Watson

Image: Lia Toby/WENN

10. "If men don’t have to be aggressive in order to be accepted, women won’t feel compelled to be submissive. If men don’t have to control, women won’t have to be controlled."

Emma Watson

Image: WENN

11. "I don't want other people to decide who I am. I want to decide that for myself."

Emma Watson

Image: WENN

12. "Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive. Both men and women should feel free to be strong. It is time that we all perceive gender on a spectrum, instead of two sets of opposing ideals."

Emma Watson

Image: FayesVision/WENN

13. "As a younger woman, that pressure got me down, but I've made my peace with it. With airbrushing and digital manipulation, fashion can project an unobtainable image that's dangerously unhealthy. I'm excited about the aging process. I'm more interested in women who aren't perfect. They're more compelling."

Emma Watson

Image: WENN

14. "I think the actresses who are really successful are the ones who are comfortable in their own skins and still look human."

Emma Watson

Image: WENN

15. "Men, I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue, too."

Kim Kardashian sends Kris a mean message about her 11 "omish" looks (PHOTOS)

Kris is newly single and ready to mingle, but you wouldn't know it by the boring, covered-up looks she's been running around in. We appreciate that a woman of a certain age neither wants nor needs to let it all hang out all the time, but the Kardashian family matriarch could stand to brighten things up a bit. As it turns out, her daughter Kim agrees.

Kris shared an email Kim sent, calling out Kris's bland sartorial choices and commanding her to step it up — no more "pilgrim adams," "omish" outifts, please!

We love that Kimmie can't spell Amish correctly. She's adorable. But she's also right: Kris has been dragging this look out for years, and it's definitely time to move on — especially now that she's an eligible bachelorette!

Here's Kris wearing the exact same outfit for a Today show appearance in October:

Kris, we love you too, but may we humbly suggest that you add some color into your wardrobe, drop the Peter Pan collars, expose your lovely shoulders once in a while (that's what short hair is for!) and rock that incredible body you work so hard for!

Spicy vegan jalapeño poppers are a healthier twist on a favorite appetizer

These sweet and spicy stuffed poppers are filled with a rich cashew cream filling, replacing the cheese and keeping these poppers vegan and dairy-free. You can whip up the cashew cream up to 2 days in advance to save time.

The Interview: 9 Pros and cons of releasing it on demand

$

The Change.org petition from Aaron Escobar of Woodland Hills, California, asks Sony not to give in to the threats and demands of Guardians of Peace, the party responsible for the Sony hack and which the United States has confirmed is tied to North Korea.

More: Sony hacks: A full timeline of every dirty detail revealed

"I believe it is an act of cowardice to so easily given into [sic] the demands of such an anonymous group of individuals. Not simply as a company, but as artists, as Americans," Escobar writes. "As such I implore you to proudly embrace one of our most valued and sacred freedoms of all, the right to free speech."

In response to the petition, we've laid out some pros and cons of releasing the movie on demand. You be the judge and vote, sharing your stance on the film, in the comments section below.

Pros

1. Everyone can watch, free of North Korea being able to target one specific theater

The Guardians of Peace threatened an attack reminiscent of the 9/11 attack, should the film be released in theaters. By releasing the film on demand, Sony takes theaters out of the equation.

2. It's a way to strike back at North Korea and not let them win

By not releasing the film Sony is, in essence, negotiating with terrorists. No one wants to see the bad guy win.

More: The Interview — things the real Kim Jong-un will hate and things he'll love

3. The film would still make a profit

By charging for release on demand instead of racking up at the box office, the film will still garner a profit. Or, like Mitt Romney suggested on Twitter, Sony could donate the profits to fighting Ebola.

4. We would prove that Americans don't back down

In his petition, Escobar says that Sony's decision not to release the film makes the United States look cowardly. Instead of allowing Sony to be bullied into a decision, the studio should stand up against the threat.

Cons

1. North Korea could still target Sony

Just because North Korea can't target one specific theater if the movie is released on demand doesn't mean the country can't still target Sony and find a way to hurt the United States and its citizens.

2. The hackers could release more information

Guardians of Peace has threatened to release more inside information on Sony executives if they don't shelve the film for good. This could do even more harm to the company.

More: The Interview death scene: Did North Korea leak it?

3. The film would lose out on profits

Right now, there's still a chance the film could be released in theaters if the United States can contain the threat posed by Guardians of Peace. It won't make it in time for Christmas, but The Interview could still reasonably be released next year.

4. Sony isn't giving in; it's giving the government time to contain the threat

By not releasing the film per the demands of Guardians of Peace, the studio is not shelving the film indefinitely. It wouldn't be surprising at all if Sony was in fact working with the FBI and following the organization's advice on how to proceed in this matter. By delaying the release, Sony is giving the government more time to contain the threat to our nation.

5. By releasing the film, Sony threatens thousands of American lives

Sony would be liable if it had information about an attack and still chose to release the film. If an attack did occur as retaliation for The Interview being released, thousands of people could be killed. Furthermore, Sony would be ruined as a company, especially considering the lawsuits that would follow.

Do you think Sony should release the film on demand?

Rihanna's heartbreak revealed and it's not over Chris Brown

Fenty spoke openly with Daily Mail Online, admitting that he was escorted out of Rihanna's Diamond Ball last week for drinking too much.

More: Rihanna "wanted to kill everybody" when she watched Home

Turns out that Rihanna is well aware of her father's struggle and has been trying her best to help him for a while now.

According to Fenty himself, not only did his pop-star daughter pay $58,000 for him to go through a Malibu rehab program, but she also flies him to LA every three months for urine tests. Even more extreme: Every time he visits, Rihanna has the minibar cleared at the hotel before his arrival. She has also apparently cut off all ties with Chris Brown and ignored him at their last meeting.

Daily Mail Online describes Rihanna's relationship with her father as "a heartbreaking bid to save Ronald Fenty."

From all outward appearances, the Diamond Ball went off without a hitch. Rihanna arrived in a gorgeous rose-colored gown, practically dripping with glitz and glam jewelry, befitting the night. The singer had a big smile on her face and was joined on the carpet by several members of her family.

More: Tom Ford just wants one thing — more naked Rihanna

The event was coordinated to raise money for her Clara Lionel Foundation charity, which was named for her grandparents. The star-studded event even included a six-minute stage introduction from Brad Pitt.

But Rihanna's father wasn't there to see any of the events of the night unfold. Though Fenty made it to the red carpet, he started drinking. He said that he tripped over a chair, which spurred security to ask him to leave. Fenty tried to object, since Rihanna had yet to arrive, but security reportedly told him, "Don't matter, man."

To make matters worse, Fenty admitted the drinking didn't stop there. When he arrived back at the hotel room, he had another couple of drinks and then fell asleep, according to his account of the night.

More: Rihanna's return to Instagram was not what we were expecting

Though Rihanna seems to currently be working to support her father, the two have also had periods where their relationship was rocky due to her father's addiction.

"I only start[ed] drinking, once I come back here in December," Fenty, who has a thick Bajan accent, explained.

"I feel bad because I let her down because she spend all that money putting me in rehab, then find me drunk somewhere. It is not good. What can I say but I'm sorry. It's me who f***ed up."

Are you surprised to hear about Rihanna's relationship with her father? Should he return to rehab?

More: Man Crush Mondays: 16 Things to love about Brandon Stanton

The comedian, who's visiting New York with his family, posted on Instagram that after waiting six hours for "the Humans of New York guy," he decided to take matters into his own hands, posting his this pic:

Image credit: Hamish Blake / Instagram

The caption, though, is what really makes it perfect.

"I grew up on a ketchup farm in Mississippi. We would go out all day and dig up bottles of ketchup then sell them by the side of the road for 10 dimes, which most people just call a dollar now. It wasn't till I was 18 that my pappy told me there's no such thing as a ketchup farm, he was buying those bottles in town and burying them in the middle of the night just to give us something to do the next day. They cost him two dollars a bottle, so we were losing a solid dollar every bottle, plus the time spent digging them up and him sneaking out every night to bury them. After I found out I moved to New York to become a jazz dancer. I became a hit and danced privately for many well known celebrities and world leaders. I would sometimes dance quietly for Einstein in his study, he said it helped him think. I was dancing softly in the corner when he came up with the E equals Mc Squared stuff."

Hilarious, right? That is, it's on point if you're familiar with Humans of New York, or HONY. If you're not, allow us to get you caught up on one of the most popular photo blogs in the world. Here's everything you need to know:

hony 1

hony 1

1. It's massively successful

HONY has well over 11 million likes on its Facebook page. Its first book sold more than 30,000 presale copies and was No. 1 on the New York Times best seller list in November 2013. In 2013, it won Webby awards for Best Use of Photography and Best Cultural Blog. HONY's founder was named one of Time Magazine's 30 People Under 30 Changing the World.

HONY 2

HONY 2

2. It's the brainchild of amateur photographer Brandon Stanton

Stanton, 30, is a completely self-taught photographer who's only been snapping photos for about five years. He started by taking photos during his breaks from his bond trading job in Chicago. When he lost that job, he started traveling and photographing people all over the country. He landed in New York, where he came up with the idea to take 10,000 photographs of New Yorkers and plot them on a map of the city. But as Stanton started talking to his subjects as he was photographing them, he became fascinated with their unique stories. He started including a quote from each subject with his or her picture, and Humans of New York was born.

HONY 3

HONY 3

3. It's not just Humans of New York anymore

In late 2012, Stanton traveled to Iran and included portraits of people there on the blog. After the April 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, Stanton did a series featuring street portraits in Boston. He did the same in Austin, Texas, during 2014's SXSW Conference. And last summer, he departed on a two-month world tour sponsored by the United Nations, taking portraits and recording stories in 12 countries in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia.

HONY 4

HONY 4

4. People either love it or hate it

Or maybe it's a mix of both. But it seems like everyone familiar with HONY has a strong opinion about it, and that love/hate relationship most people have with the blog has spawned a number of parodies, spoofs and spin-offs. There's now a Humans of _____ for just about every major city in the world, though none are as successful as Humans of New York.

HONY 5

HONY 5

5. It's been behind some highly successful charity events

In 2012, fashion label DKNY asked Stanton for permission to use some of his shots in an ad campaign. He declined, and when the label used the photos without permission, all he asked in retribution was that DKNY donate $100,000 in his name to a YMCA chapter in New York. DKNY issued a public apology and made a $25,000 donation, and Stanton used the crowdfunding site Indiegogo to raise the remaining $75,000. It ended up raising more than $100,000 on its own. That was just the beginning. In 2013, Stanton featured a family on his blog who were trying to adopt an orphan from Ethiopia. He started another Indiegogo campaign to help the family pay for adoption costs — and surpassed their fundraising goal in 90 minutes. Earlier this year, Stanton photographed a young boy in New York named Rumi who dreamed of owning his own horse. Stanton started an Indiegogo campaign to raise money for Rumi and his family family to go on vacation to a Colorado ranch. Within seven minutes of posting about the campaign on his Facebook page, Stanton was able to pay for the family's vacation, and by the end of the campaign, he had raised an additional $20,000 to donate to the New York Therapeutic Riding Center.

HONY 6

HONY 6

6. It seems to bring out the best in people

In addition to charity projects, HONY has helped countless New Yorkers by connecting people through Facebook. On posts where the subjects confess that they struggle to find jobs, employers comment and offer them work. On posts where the subjects share that they have nowhere to spend the holidays, families comment to offer to set them a place at their own table.

There's even more to the Ray Rice elevator video than you thought

More: 15 #WhyIStayed tweets that'll give you goosebumps

ABC News revealed Friday it had obtained 45 minutes of footage that shows what happened after the infamous clip we've all seen — when former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray punched his now-wife Janay hard enough to knock her out cold in an Atlantic City elevator earlier this year.

In the new footage, Janay can be seen pushing Ray away when he tried to approach her after the incident, until hotel security step in to keep the couple separated. But as the tape goes on, Janay's emotions seem to change. She's angry immediately after the assault, then starts to cry. By the time she and Ray are escorted, both handcuffed, into another elevator, ABC reports that Janay appears to nuzzle and kiss him.

More: Janay Rice gives heartbreaking interview about domestic violence (VIDEO)

According to ABC, both Ray and Janay were arrested that night, but Janay's charges were dropped while Ray's were upgraded to aggravated assault. The NFL suspended him for two games, but once the video appeared online and circulated widely, Ray was suspended indefinitely and ultimately fired by the Ravens. He recently won an appeal that will allow him to return to playing, and the whole incident put public pressure on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to resign, as it became more and more apparent that Goodell had seen the footage before handing down as lenient a punishment as a two-game suspension.

ABC reports that Ray went to court to prevent the outlet from obtaining the additional footage, but he lost. His attorney said in an interview, “This is a time of healing and he, quite naturally, doesn't want another media showing of what must have been the worst event of his life. What the media ought to be focusing on is the issue of domestic violence."

Scientists prove you shouldn't listen to Dr. Oz

More: Dr. Oz asked Twitter for health questions and it went horribly wrong

The talk show doctor has already been subject to a number of scandals this year, like when his fans took him down on Twitter and when Senator Claire McCaskill scathingly scolded him for peddling weight loss methods that have no basis in actual science or medicine.

Now, the British Medical Journal has joined the growing number of Mehmet Oz's critics. In an article published this week, health experts analyzed a random sampling of episodes of a pair of syndicated shows, one of which was The Dr. Oz Show. What they found? Real medicine supports less than half of the advice Oz gives viewers on his show.

By watching 40 random episodes of The Dr. Oz Show, researchers identified 479 recommendations Oz made to his viewers. After weighing those against medical research, it was found that more than one in three had no supporting medical evidence at all, and only 33 percent were supported by "believable" medical evidence.

More: Dr Oz sued over a hunk of burnin' rice

But that's not even the worst part. According to the research, 58 to 59 percent of the time, Oz didn't even tell his viewers what the benefits might be if they followed his advice — they were supposed to just follow it because the TV doctor told them to.

"Anyone who followed the advice provided would be doing so on the basis of a trust in the host or guest rather than through a balanced explanation of benefits, harms and costs," researchers wrote.

Not all of the advice Oz peddles is harmful, obviously, but the scary implication of this research is that if there are harms associated with what he's telling his viewers, he probably won't disclose them.

The ultimate finding of the research was this: "consumers should be skeptical about any recommendations provided on television medical talk shows."

White Christmas sangria recipe

This beautifully festive holiday cocktail is perfect for parties, brunches or even Christmas morning! You can also sub in your favorite fruits and herbs to really make it your own.

Serves 8

Prep time: 10 minutes | Inactive time: 30 minutes | Total time: 40 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 3 tart Granny Smith apples
  • 1 large orange
  • 1-1/2 cups fresh cranberries
  • 1 cup fresh raspberries
  • 2 bottles dry white wine (I used an unoaked chardonnay)
  • 1 cup white cranberry juice
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 16 ounces ginger ale or club soda
  • 2-3 sprigs fresh rosemary

Directions:

  1. To begin, chop the apples into slices, discarding the cores. Place into a large pitcher. Slice the oranges, and add them to the pitcher. (I sliced the orange whole so they would be circular slices for a prettier final product.) Add the whole cranberries and raspberries. Using a spoon, carefully stir so as to not break the raspberries.
  2. Pour in the wine, white cranberry juice and sugar, and stir to combine. Let the sangria chill for about 30 minutes. When you're ready to serve, top the pitcher with ginger ale or club soda, and add fresh rosemary to garnish.

Your baby's needs and your happiness shouldn't be mutually exclusive

There is a mythical mother that I'd like to meet; she's written about by incensed bloggers everywhere, who all seem to know her through a friend of a friend of an acquaintance of a co-worker. This mother is hardly worthy of the title, and her offenses are many. She goes clubbing. She wears slutty clothing. She has a nanny, even though she stays at home. She hates Daniel Tiger. She lets her baby cry it out. She feeds her kids Lunchables. She's the worst. Why did she even have kids?

This mythical mom disappeared from my radar for a while, and then showed up again, unannounced, in a blog post I read about how if you aren't surrendering your identity and desires at the altar of sainted motherhood, you are a monster. Worse, you're selfish.

It takes issue with the phrase "happy mom, happy baby," which the author contends is a cop out, and an excuse. If you've heard the phrase, you know it's meant to encourage mothers (and fathers, in my opinion) to make sure that their mental health and security ducks are in a row, because it will ultimately benefit their children. It's a reminder to cut yourself a break once in a while so you can be your best, happiest self for your kids.

The author of this particular post takes a dump all over that, and falls prey to what I recognize as the "hey, this is so easy and natural for me, why do you suck so bad at it when everyone is exactly the same?" line of thinking that comes from a certain subset of parents who are high on the smell of their own farts.

Here's my favorite part:

"Today 'happy mom, happy baby' is a euphemism for parent-centric parenting. (And that applies to dads too.) It represents leaving a young baby to cry it out because a mom wants her beauty sleep. It represents schedules that fit the mom's life while ignoring the natural rhythm (and needs) of the baby. It represents the false idea that our lives should continue as they were before baby and that the onus of adaptation is on the baby and the baby alone."

So first of all, eyeroll.

Secondly, this is so catty I can barely stand it. She addresses dads for like, half a second before getting all verklempt about how moms just want that "beauty sleep" and for their kids to fit their schedules. Dads can get up, too. If they want to sleep train their babies does that also make them shallow garbage people, or is that just moms or what?

Finally, it assumes that people all want their babies sleeping through the night because it's a nice, convenient luxury, which is ignorant and tone-deaf and smacks of privilege.

There's an ongoing hate-boner in the piece for cry-it-out in particular (complete with studies!), the realm of selfish mothers of future serial killers. And sure, the studies are a little problematic, but who cares when there are other parents to denigrate?

I will never understand why people can't just be happy that their parenting jam works for them. They always have to put someone else's down to feel completely validated, which is ridiculous.

I am so tired of the idea that once you have children, you have to shackle yourself to them, but not for the reason you think. If my kid let me, I would superglue her cute little face to mine and walk around like that, but she's not into it for some reason.

My issue is that if you make your entire personality about your kid, eventually they will resent you for it. They have their own identity, so they don't need to be yours, too. Plus, I'm going to guess that being a really vocal judgy jerk is going to be worse for your kids in the long run than a little Ferberizing. But hey, they haven't done a study on that — yet.

For an almost identical look to this overpriced scarf, buy similar fabrics from your local supplier and use this video guide on how to sew your own. Or for an extremely thrifty DIY, use fabric paint and an old T-shirt to create an infinity scarf with no sewing at all.

2. Burberry painted ankle boot and bag ($1695)

burberry painted bag and heel

Image: Neiman Marcus

The best thing about this DIY is that the instructions are pretty much right there in the photo. Take one pair of light colored peep-toe ankle boots and one bag, add some spray-painted flowers and, presto! You've got yourself a gift set just like this one.

3. iPad stand ($35)

ipad holder

Image: etsy.com

This item can be used as both an iPad stand or a cookbook stand and it's pretty easy to make. All it takes is a cutting board and a couple of extra pieces of wood and you're done. You can also personalize it by adding a fun accessory or maybe some initials.

4. Kate Spade crystal sneakers

Kate Spade sneakers

Not that everyone doesn't love some Kate Spade in their closet, but sometimes we can't all afford the price tag that comes with it. Just get some black sneakers and add crystal beads and you've got the same look for less.

5. Glitter Mason jar light ($25)

glitter mason jar

If you don't have the time or skills to create a lamp, you can still easily create this gift for someone on your list. Just get a Mason jar from a thrift store (or even a 99 Cents store), add glitter and a bow, toss in a votive candle and you're done. It'll look expensive, but no one has to know you made it for pennies.

6. Menorasaurus Rex ($85)

7. Gold candle holders ($95)

Cheap candle holders can be found in almost any store. You can buy them used at a thrift store or even find them new for next to nothing. Just add some gold paint and you'll have one fancy gift to wrap.

8. Jackson Pollock style sneakers ($565)

Just take a look at that photo and you'll see how crazy easy it would be to DIY these sneakers. Gray leather sneakers plus some red, blue, white, orange and yellow paint. The best part is you don't even have to worry about being neat. Just splatter away to your heart's content.

9. Gold shoelaces ($19K)

This gift can either be DIY'd by buying standard laces and dipping them in gold paint. Or you could just buy gold-colored cord (seen in many gift-wrapping departments) and use that instead. Either way, you get the same look for a lot less.

HGTV's Genevieve Gorder shares highlights from her stunning home renovation

Tip #1: Mix it up

Genevieve Gorder - HGTV

Gorder says, "Mix high-end pieces with lower-end finds to give any space contrast and a unique aesthetic." Got a room you need to fill but not a big budget? Don't be afraid to set that Ikea coffee table next to the beautiful antique you got from your grandmother.

Tip #2: Tone it down with white

Genevieve Gorder - HGTV

When decorating a room that you know could get cluttered, such as an office or a kid's play room, use white walls and furniture to keep it looking neat and clean.

Tip #3: Keep it bright

Genevieve Gorder - HGTV

Gorder says, "In rooms that lack natural light, decorate with white and add neutral accents, like gray and gold, to keep it bright." If you've got a dark room in your house, lighten it up with white accents and golds that reflect light.

Tip #4: Put the TV on the wall

Genevieve Gorder - HGTV

Gorder says, "Mount televisions on the wall. It saves tabletop space and can serve as the centerpiece for a beautiful, eclectic art display." Even if you have a flastscreen TV, you still need a piece of furniture to put it on, which can use up valuable space. Clear up floor space by anchoring the TV to the wall.

Tip #5: Don't be afraid of dark colors

Genevieve Gorder - HGTV

Gorder says, "Position décor items against black pieces to make them look more beautiful, dramatic and noticeable." A black wall in a small room may sound like a bold choice, but just look at how it makes everything else in the room pop.

Tip #6: It's okay to use big furniture in a small room

Genevieve Gorder - HGTV

Gorder says, "Use reflective services and oversized furniture wherever possible to make the space look bigger." Don't be afraid to use large pieces of furniture in a smaller room, it actually can help make the space look larger.

Tip #7: Mirrors are your friend

Genevieve Gorder - HGTV

Have a tiny room in your house? Borrow Gorder's idea for her bedroom and install a huge mirror to make the room appear bigger. Check out how much more light there is in the room, thanks to the mirror she has above her fireplace.

Tip #8: Have fun with holiday decorating

Genevieve Gorder - HGTV

If you're worried that your living room is too tiny to fit a Christmas tree or other holiday decorations, think again. Adding festive decorations is the best way to bring happiness and cheer into your home during the holidays.

Kristen Bell welcomes a daughter and totally nails the baby name

Bell and Shepard announced on Friday, Dec. 19 that their second daughter had made her arrival. Their adorable baby name choice?

Delta Bell Shepard.

The hilarious couple didn't make the traditional baby announcement, as Bell posted this picture of a mama ape holding the hand of a baby ape.

Not to be outdone by his wife, Shepard also made an announcement via Twitter:

Dax Shepard

Dax Shepard

What is the meaning behind the name Delta Bell? The middle name is obviously from Bell's maiden name or last name. Delta is a southern-sounding name that reminds us of Designing Women star Delta Burke. Perhaps southern baby names will be a new trend, as Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are reportedly looking at these types of names as well.

Delta is actually the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet, which is fitting since Delta is the fourth member of their family. The couple also has a daughter, 20-month-old Lincoln.

Back in September, the 34-year-old Veronica Mars star told People.com that she and Shepard were "completely stumped" over baby names, before finally picking the perfect one.

"We had a little bit of a breakthrough. We've settled on one, thankfully," she revealed. "It's a lot of pressure, especially because we felt Lincoln was so perfect."

Bell admitted that they choose the name Lincoln for their older daughter before they knew if they were having a boy or girl. "He (Dax) always wanted his first to be named Lincoln and so we got lazy when we found out she was a girl and say, 'Hey, why not Lincoln?'"

The name Delta is a unique choice, as the Social Security Administration, the organization that keeps track of baby name popularity, does not have it in the top 1000 for the last 14 years.

Whether they call her Delta Bell or just Delta, we think it is pretty darn adorable.

Tell us: What do you think of the name Delta Bell?

George Clooney's absolutely fabulous on Downton Abbey (VIDEO)

More: Downton is set ablaze!

Whether you call it a spoof, a parody or a one-off, there's no denying the sheer brilliance behind Clooney's visit to Downton for the "Text Santa" initiative.

Downton Abbey George Clooney

Downton Abbey George Clooney

In the five-minute skit, Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) is quickly shaken from a perfect afternoon with a note that he has (once again) lost the family fortune. Needing to take a stroll and think things through, he wanders off but soon runs into the Ghost of Downton's Parallel, played by Absolutely Fabulous's Joanna Lumley. She quickly zips him off to an alternate universe in which Grantham is nowhere to be found. Instead, Lady Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) is in Downton and living a completely different life. Namely: She's married to "George Oceans Gravity"... played by Clooney. One of the best parts is definitely when Grantham scoffs at "Lord Hollywood" and ponders what Cora could possibly see in him. "Seriously?" Lumley's ghost says, throwing plenty of her classic side-eye. Cora isn't the only one swooning for her handsome "husband." At one point, Dowager Countess of Grantham (the amazing Maggie Smith) crumples to the floor at the slightest touch from Hollywood. Now that's some serious dedication on Smith's part! (And exactly the reaction we'd have if Clooney touched us.)

More: Why we're hoping Branson will just steal Mary's heart already

We'd be remiss not to mention the silk undergarments floating around one of Downton's dressing rooms, too... and the man who delivers them. In a nice crossover event, Jeremy Piven also appears on the Downton spoof, showing up to deliver fancy and fresh undergarments to the Crawley sisters. Lord Grantham is, of course, appalled. But not nearly as shaken speechless as everyone else in the room when Selfridge proceeds to return Isobel Crawley's bra to her. Apparently she left it in his office. Scandalous!

If it's possible for more Mr. Selfridge and Downton Abbey crossovers, we'd be down. We also wouldn't mind seeing more of Lord Hollywood. Let's not get rid of Grantham just yet, though!

Slow Cooker Sunday: Easy General Tso’s chicken

$

My kids love getting Chinese food, but it's not always the best option, since many of the chicken dishes are battered and fried. In this idiot-proof version of General Tso's chicken, I lightly browned organic chicken breast and added it to the slow cooker along with a spicy Asian sauce. This is such a simple recipe and perfect for busy families. I recommend serving this dish over steamed rice or a veggie fried rice.

Slow cooker General TSO’s chicken recipe

Slow cooker General Tso's chicken recipe

This is a simple and easy, foolproof recipe for Asian takeout at home. Organic chicken is browned and slow-cooked in the slow cooker for this tasty takeout-inspired family meal. Serve over steamed white or fried rice.

Serves 6

Prep time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 6 hours 5 minutes | Total time: 6 hours 20 minutes

Ingredients:

For the chicken

  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or canola oil
  • 4 organic chicken breasts, chopped into pieces

For the sauce

  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
  • 1/2 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup rice wine vinegar
  • 4 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh garlic paste or 3-4 fresh garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons honey or brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the cornstarch, sea salt, garlic powder, onion powder and crushed red pepper flakes, mixing well.
  2. To the bowl, add the chicken pieces, and using your hands, toss well to evenly coat, shaking off the excess mixture.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium heat, and add the oil.
  4. Add the chicken to the pan, and lightly brown it on all sides for about 3 to 4 minutes (the chicken will not be fully cooked).
  5. Remove the chicken from the heat, and place it in the bowl of the slow cooker.
  6. In a mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients for the sauce, and mix well. Pour the sauce over the chicken pieces, and cover the slow cooker with the lid.
  7. Set the cooker to low, and cook for 6 hours or until the chicken is completely cooked.
  8. Serve warm over steamed or fried rice.
  9. Store leftovers for up to 2 days in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Abby (Lisa Edelstein) starts dating a man who is a dad, married and the same guy she once had an affair with while she was married. In other words, this is a completely normal, healthy relationship. Meanwhile, Phoebe (Beau Garrett) finds herself getting close to one of the dads at school, which could get complicated. Lyla (Janeane Garofalo) is looking find a new way to "release some tension," and it's anyone's guess as to what methods she'll find to do that.

More: EXCLUSIVE: First look at Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce (VIDEO)

In our exclusive clip from the episode, Max and Ford are being honored at the Family Equality Gala with an award presented by LGBT activist Adele Northrop (Laverne Cox). But not everything goes according to plan at the ceremony.

Adele tells the audience that Ford and Max aren't an example of what a gay family should look like, but rather an example of what all families should look like. It's a great honor, but when their names are called, Adele is left holding the award for a while as the moment gets more than a little awkward. Finally, Ford comes out — looking pretty darn snazzy in his shiny blue coat and unique, um, tie? Or would that be an ascot? Whatever it is, he looks great in it.

Where is Max, you ask? Well, according to Ford, his husband is having a "wardrobe malfunction." That brings to mind so many intriguing possibilities, but it also makes one wonder if that's the true story. Is Max really behind the scenes dealing with some sort of wardrobe disaster? Or could it be there was another kind of disaster that kept him from taking the stage with Ford? Did the newly wedded couple get into a lovers' spat backstage? We'll all have to watch the episode to find out what happens.
