Mom story: My daughter has cerebral palsy

0

Lisa Viele, 39, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, talks about juggling life with three kids — one with cerebral palsy — and making sure that each child feels special.

My mom story

by Lisa Viele
as told to Julie Weingarden Dubin

Thirteen years ago, following a great pregnancy, I became a mom via an emergency C-section. I didn’t know this at the time, but my baby girl’s heart rate wasn’t fluctuating during contractions. After spending time in the NICU at a local children’s hospital, visiting several doctors and doing research, it was determined that my beautiful daughter, Lizzy, was going to be delayed. Lizzy was profoundly mentally disabled .

Accepting the truth

Lizzy has cerebral palsy , an incurable and permanent condition that affects the brain. Lizzy has seizures and she drools because her brain doesn't tell her to swallow. For months, I pulled away from everyone. I was mad and my anger eventually turned to horrible sadness. I felt like the daughter I dreamed about and hoped for was dead. I was so depressed. My marriage to my husband, Damon, a high school teacher and football coach, suffered. I felt like I had done this somehow.

But when Lizzy began smiling at 12 months, I started feeling differently. She’d come off of some strong seizure medicine and started acting like a baby. Eventually, I began telling myself that Lizzy was perfect and I wouldn’t want her any other way.

In 2002, I had another daughter, Emily. Lizzy was almost 3 and was our “special needs” child. I found it difficult to accept that Emily was meeting all the milestones that Lizzy wasn’t. Every time Emily hit a milestone that Lizzy didn’t, it felt like a punch in the gut. But, life had to keep going forward. I learned to grieve those milestones and move on.

By the time my son Jack was born in 2007, Lizzy was 8 and had just learned to walk. I felt like I had two babies. Both in diapers, both spoon fed, and both in strollers. We didn’t go out much. I have no clue where our energy came from.

Loving Lizzy

I’m a stay-at-home mom and a parent advisor for the CP Family Network, a website to help empower CP families. Damon is a hands-on dad — he has to be in order for this family to function. Our two younger ones are into sports and Lizzy comes with us to practices and games.

"Lizzy’s love language is touch."

Lizzy is a happy girl — she loves music and snuggling. She depends on us 100 percent of the time. We get lots of looks and questions about Lizzy — she often draws attention by squealing loudly. She has seizures that are not completely controlled with medicine. She doesn’t chew so all meals have to be soft and easy to swallow. She is legally blind so she needs help with walking. She’s mostly nonverbal — though she recently said “Mama” — and she’s still in diapers.

Lizzy likes and needs to have a routine. She attends middle school with adapted hours. She goes to school at 9:00 and I pick her up at 3:00. She takes a two-hour nap when she gets home from school and is back in bed by 8:00 p.m. Her room is filled with baby toys that vibrate, light up or play music.

Lizzy may not know what is going on around her, but she has a heart and she needs respect just like any other human being. Lizzy’s love language is touch. Hugging or wrestling, it doesn’t matter, she loves both.

Seeing the joy

One thing that I’ve really tried to do with my other two kids is spend time with each of them, alone. My biggest fear is Emily or Jack growing up and resenting me for giving Lizzy all the attention and barely any to them. Emily and Jack have learned a lot about a “special needs” life. They are more aware of other kids with needs. They aren’t afraid of them.

That warms my heart more than anything. I know they would stand up for these kids. My kids have learned patience and it’s something that I really only learned when I had Lizzy. We feel blessed to have Lizzy in our family. Lizzy’s touched more lives in her short 13 years than I have in almost 40! Lizzy has taught us compassion, unconditional love, and the understanding that things could be worse.

Black Friday beauty preparation

Black Friday is days away and we have a feeling there are going to be a lot of tired ladies out there early Friday morning. Don't hit the sales before checking out our Black Friday beauty preparation tips!

Black friday beauty preparation tips

Avoid a hairy situation

The last thing you want to think about at the crack of dawn this Black Friday is what to do with your hair! To avoid a hair disaster the morning of, prepare the night before.

Instead of waking up in the morning and washing your locks, wash the night before and throw in a little texturizing cream — we like Bb. Texture Hair Dressing Crème from Bumble and Bumble — to create gorgeous texture for the next day.

Or, if your hair is dry Thanksgiving night and you can hardly summon the energy to drag yourself into bed , braid your hair to create loose waves. Secure with snag-free elastics like Goody Ouchless Elastics and you'll be good to go on Black Friday!

If your hair is looking a little worse for the wear in the morning, a great go-to beauty product is Fresh Start Smoothing Dry Shampoo from Tresemme . Spray it in your hair and look fresh and clean in under 5 minutes.

Nail the deals with ease

We know that long, fake nails are fun to wear, but they're also a pain in the butt when you're grabbing deal after deal on Black Friday! Avoid any broken nail trauma this Black Friday and go natural with your nails. You don't have to forgo polish, ladies. In fact, we recommend painting your nails for Black Friday in this pretty Heart of Gold shade from Topshop .

Make shopping bags the only bags you're holding

Black Friday leaves us beauties very little time to apply a full face of makeup and some of us are lucky if we can even manage to swipe on some concealer after missing our early morning wake-up call. Spare yourself a few minutes of concealer application by prepping your peepers. Avoiding salt can help reduce dark circles and so can some good old-fashioned shuteye! Do yourself a favor for Black Friday and hit the sheets a tad early, avoid late night leftover noshing and consider popping on some soothing eye pads like Recover-E Cucumber Eye Pads before you go to bed.

On average, Thanksgiving dinner typically consists of one side dish per person. That's a lot of food! That being said, there's no getting around all the fabulous leftovers that are certain to come.

Leftovers galore!

Other than the famous turkey-stuffing-cranberry sandwich, which no one wants to eat for weeks on end, what else can be done with all these Thanksgiving leftovers? We're here to share some of the best ideas and recipes that will make you excited for all the soon-to-be leftovers from Thanksgiving this year.

Donate it

Since Thanksgiving is a holiday of giving thanks and being grateful for what we have, consider donating the leftover food to those in need. According to a study by Feeding America, an astounding 49 million people in the U.S., or 1 in every 6, do not have enough to eat. Make a difference in someone's life this holiday season by donating your leftovers to families in need.

49 million people in the U.S., or 1 in every 6, do not have enough to eat.

tupperwareGive it to your guests

Prepare in advance by purchasing large plastic bags and airtight containers . Before everyone leaves, have them fill up a bag with Thanksgiving goodies. This lets everyone enjoy the leftovers, prevents the food from going to waste, and helps with the cleanup and food storage on your end.

Create new recipes

Instead of reheating the same meal night after night, consider venturing out and making some new dishes involving the same traditional foods. Try these unique leftover turkey recipes, including a turkey mole and a turkey artichoke salad. A turkey casserole is a great way to eat up stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and turkey in one. With cold weather finally upon us, whip up some delicious corn chowder with spiced turkey. This is perfect for chilly afternoons by the fire with the family!

Unique uses for leftovers

Make baby food

Consider pureeing Thanksgiving leftovers to make homemade food for your little one. Foods that work the best are sweet potatoes, turkey , squash, pumpkin and green beans. Freeze in an ice cube tray and transfer to a freezer bag. Food will last about one month.

Have an eating contest

This one's just for fun, but why not get the family, or at least the kids, together again for an all-out eating contest the day after Thanksgiving? Make everyone's plate the same size with the same amount of food on each plate. Don't forget about dessert! See who can eat their plateful the quickest, with the winner getting a special prize .

Fashion revival

The style spotters at SheKnows are always watching for the next big thing, and sometimes what we spot has already been around the style block. In this trend report, we’re sharing three trends that happen to be coming back from the past — with a vengeance.

Oversize sweaters

Big is back and just in time for the inevitable drop in temperature. What better way to stay cozy than in an extra-large cardi or slouchy sweater? Whether with leggings, long skirts or skinny jeans, bigger is better this season. Look for chunky knit, bold buttons and graphic patterns, or do as we do and just borrow from your boyfriend’s stock of sweaters.

Our pick: Stay toasty and on trend with this oversize plaid cardigan .

90s-inspired denim

'90s-inspired denim

Rebecca Taylor and See by Chloe both showed off some blast-from-the-past denim during fashion week, but we’ve had our style-eye on the loose fitting, faded jeans from our teen years for a while. But don’t fret — this season’s incarnation of '90s denim is much more fashion-forward. Think of these jeans as an update to the baggy boyfriend styles we’ve already been sporting for the past few seasons.

Our pick: Test out the trend by wearing a pair of these light wash boyfriend jeans .

Ruffles

Ruffles

Believe it or not, that '80s party dress staple is back for fall, but it’s not as scary as you think. This season’s ruffles are more ravishing than retro-overkill and they’re much more toned down and stylish this time around. Whether you opt for a shirt with ruffle detailing or a skirt with a slight touch of fashionable flounce, get ready for a ruffle revival.

Our pick: Pair this simple ivory bow ruffle top with dark skinnies and riding boots for an easy-wearing way to sport the trend .

Pizza grilled cheese

This is one grilled cheese that will knock your socks off! It's perfect for lunch and perfect when dipped in marinara.

pizza grilled cheese

Oh yes! You have just met your new favorite sandwich! Delicious crispy grilled cheese filled with your favorite classic pizza toppings. We left it simple this time around by doing just classic sliced mozzerella cheese and thinly sliced pepperoni. However, it would be totally amazing with anything you call your favorite — sausage, green peppers, onions and even pesto! Add a side of marinara for dipping and turn this sandwich into a delicious pizza sandwich treat!

Pizza grilled cheese recipe

Yields 1 sandwich

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices fresh sliced bread
  • Unsalted butter
  • 2-4 slices mozzerella cheese
  • 8-10 pepperoni slices
  • 1/4 cup marinara sauce
  • Optional fillings: sausage, green peppers, onions and mushrooms

Directions:

  1. Lightly butter one side of each slice of bread.
  2. Flip over butter side and cover each nonbuttered side with one or two slices of cheese. Add sliced pepperoni over the cheese and put the sandwich together. If adding any other fillings make sure to add them now. Note, all meat products should be cooked fully and vegetables should be lightly sauteed. The sandwich will only warm the fillings, not cook them fully.
  3. Add to hot pan and cook on medium heat until bread is browned and the cheese is melted.
  4. Slice in half and serve with warmed marinara sauce.

Get space ready for your newborn

With a baby on the way, there’s lots to do and prepare for. So much so, that sometimes the baby's room gets left to the last minute. In these tough penny-pinching times, some people may feel that they don’t have enough room for their growing family. Remember, it’s not the size of your home that matters. It’s the amount of love that counts and this will be what will truly help your baby be happy and calm.

For the first six months, the baby can share your bedroom, especially during breastfeeding. This will help you conserve your energy because nursing your baby can leave you exhausted. Keep in mind, requirements will change and grow as the baby does. Making room in your home can be achieved in a stress-free manner. Here are some of the best ways to have your baby's space ready in time for the joyous arrival:

Clear clutter

If the baby’s nursery is currently being used as a storage space, sort out the things you want to keep and the things you want to throw out. Organization is the key to a calm start. The great part about clearing clutter is that you will also end up with fewer items that will have to be stored in other rooms, the garage, storage unit, etc.

Keep your baby healthy

You will want to rip out any old carpeting in the baby’s new room. Also, if painting the room is necessary, be sure to use a lead-free and eco-friendly brand. You should also give time for the odor of new paint to be fully gone by keeping the windows open. If no proper ventilation is available, keep a bucket of water in the middle of the room to absorb the extra paint smell. A humidifier is also useful to keep the room's air perfect for the baby.

Plan room sharing

If the older sibling's room is big enough, have him or her share their room by putting up a partition to separate the two children. If the older child has to move to a new room, get the transition going early so he or she has ample time to get used to the new space. If this is not done in a timely manner, your child will have to deal with too many changes once the baby arrives home and unpleasant resentment could develop. Making a change early will make the adjustment period more tolerable.

Eliminate street noise

If Baby's room is close to the street, add a white noise machine to help block out some of the outside distractions. Also, pick up some dark blinds, which block out unwanted outside light. This will help the baby fall into an even deeper sleep. And if the baby sleeps deeper and longer, so will you.

Clean furniture

Be sure to clean your furniture using plain water and a sponge or just a dry duster, keeping all scented and potentially dangerous products out of your home. If you don’t use environmentally safe products to start with, during allergy season it's hard to pinpoint why your baby may not be doing well.

Keep your language clean

Babies learn from the cradle, so keep in mind the words you would like them to hear and speak. If your friends and family tend to have “potty mouths,” simply ask them to make the necessary adjustments.

New American Idol promo: Is Mariah the new Paula?

0
0
Let's be honest: When the new cast of American Idol judges was announced, we all thought Nicki Minaj would be the emotional replacement for Paula Abdul. The new promo suggests otherwise...

American Idol judges

In recent seasons, the American Idol judges' table has been a rotation of faces. It saw the end of Simon Cowell & Paula Abdul. It also saw the beginning and the end for Steven Tyler. Our dawg, Randy Jackson, has stuck it out, though. Three new judges will join the table this season: Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey. In an effort to get viewers as stoked about the upcoming season as the network is, Fox is all about the promos. Mariah dominates the newest one.

In previous seasons, Paula Abdul was the emotionally charged cheerleader at the table. Fox's latest sneak peek suggests that role will be taken over by Mariah Carey. The onetime pop princess is giddy about the concept of the show and speaks of her former life as a struggling musician. We also see multiple clips of her emotionally moved during auditions, including one clip where she's actually crying. Unlike Simon Cowell's cutting remarks or Randy's laidback attitude, Mariah isn't afraid to show whatever feelings the music may evoke.

While the preview doesn't show anything too crazy, the singer hasn't had the most stable of pasts.

Mariah Carey performing

Every little girl from the '90s loved Mariah Carey. We knew all the words to "Fantasy" and sped around on our rollerblades trying to hit those dolphin-pitched notes. Long before Kelly, Carrie or J-Hud, Mariah was our American idol.

Then, somewhere between 1999's Rainbow and 2001's Glitter, MC got a little weird. In mid-2001, following a few strange voice messages left for fans on her website, our beloved Mariah was admitted into the hospital where she spent two weeks recovering from a "physical and mental breakdown." Her mental turmoil prompted the delayed release of Glitter. When the album was finally made available it just. Wasn't. Right.

Mariah had a brief comeback with the ghetto-fabulous Emancipation of Mimi in 2005. But then it was back to her strange black hole of not enough clothing and random belly paintings on her pregnant stomach. With her hubby, Nick Cannon, once against healthy and her twins , it seems Mariah is in a good place now. At least personally.

The new season of American Idol premieres on Jan. 16, 2013. We'll find out soon after if the AI gig was the right choice for Mariah's career.

Light that fireplace and put on these tunes — your Christmas season is about to get a whole lot better!

SheKnows would like to help you bring it home for the holidays with a little help from some of the top names in music and five amazing albums in stores now. Any of these could have taken the top spot, but we'll begin our list with Mr. Blake Shelton.

1

Blake Shelton — Cheers, It's Christmas

Blake Shelton — Cheers, It's Christmas

Gather 'round for an Oklahoma-dose of Christmas cheer, The Voice's Shelton has released a brand-new album with 14 twangy hits. The album stays true to Shelton's roots, and features a song with his wife, Miranda Lambert, and one with his mother, Dorothy Shackleford. If you call yourself a country fan, it doesn't get much better than this!

Key tracks include: "Oklahoma Christmas,""Home,""Blue Christmas,""Winter Wonderland" and more.

2

CeeLo Green — CeeLo's Magic Moment

CeeLo Green — Magic Moment

The Voice seems to have had a contagious festivity as co-coach CeeLo Green joins the ranks with Shelton. Green generates a fun twist on the spirit of the holidays with his trademark soulful take on a bunch of classics like "White Christmas,""Run, Run Rudolph" and "This Christmas." To complete The Voice trifecta, the album even contains a brand-new version of "Baby It's Cold Outside," featuring Christina Aguilera.

3

Scotty McCreery — Christmas with Scotty McCreery

Scotty McCreery — Christmas with Scotty McCreery

So it's not the most creative album title in the world, but the latest American Idol winner delivers where it counts. He may only be 19 years old, but Scotty's got the talent to keep up with some of country's best and he's doing it all while balancing a college workload. Somewhere in between classes he managed to grace us with 10 Christmas songs, including two originals.

Key tracks include "First Noel,""Winter Wonderland" and "Let It Snow."

4

Lady Antebellum — On This Winter's Night

Lady Antebellum — On This Winter's Night

The Tennessee trio may have recorded this album last summer, sporting fake trees and Christmas lights in the studio to distance themselves from the harsh humidity and roaring heat right outside, but whatever the formula, this album works! On This Winter's Night presents 12 Christmas classics including "Silver Bells,""I'll Be Home For Christmas" and "Silent Night," to name just a few.

5

Colbie Caillat — Christmas in the Sand

Colbie Caillat — Christmas in the Sand

This album begs a convertible driving down the coast. Granted, most of us couldn't dream of doing that for fear of frostbite, but this Caillat collection is packed full of California sun and all the warmth that comes with it. Caillat delivers 10 classics and five originals, including duets with Brad Paisley and Gavin DeGraw.

Key tracks include "Baby It's Cold Outside" and "Christmas in the Sand" .

The best part about Christmas is that it's the season that keeps on giving.

If our top 5 don't suit your ears, be sure to check out This Christmas, the new album that reunites Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta, or Merry Christmas, Baby, from Rod Stewart.

A foodie's guide to Washington state

0

If you haven't ventured to the stunning Washington state, you are missing out. This state has unrivaled beauty, constant temperatures, and the laid-back vibe you crave when visiting the Pacific Northwest. But most importantly, they have some of the best food, restaurants, coffee and wine in the entire country.

washington state

What makes a trip to Washington a must this year is all it has to offer. Washington is home to a vast collection of boutique wineries, hipster coffee shops, top-rated restaurants and breathtaking views of snowcapped mountains, icy blue water and thick forests filled with big-leaf maples and Douglas firs. No matter where you venture here, you'll be welcomed with open arms, a plate of amazing food and views you only see on postcards.

Did you say coffee?

You can't go to Washington without making a pit stop in Seattle, the birthplace of Starbucks. Although there are Stabucks shops on every corner in most of America, there's something so inspiring about grabbing a cup at the first Starbucks in the country at 1912 Pike Place. If you'd like some donuts with your joe, head to Top Pot, another Seattle institution with 12 cafes in the greater Washington area.

For something a little less mainstream, stop at Bauhaus in Pike Place. This cozy little shop is decorated like a library with towering shelves of books. On the other side are floor to ceiling windows so you can watch passers-by while you enjoy one of their homemade espressos. For another Seattle favorite, stop by Cupcake Royale in West Seattle. After a few visits the baristas will know your name and you can pair your joe with locally made cupcakes.

breakfast at salish lodge

Best breakfasts in the state

For an authentic country breakfast, get out of Seattle and head to Snoqualmie Falls and stop at the Salish Lodge. This luxury resort's restaurant not only has breathtaking views of the falls from almost every seat, their country breakfast is top-notch with four courses. You begin with fresh Seattle coffee, a baker's basket complete with their homemade honey and juice. Then they bring you a big, fluffy stack of buttermilk pancakes with Devonshire cream and maple syrup. Next you get a bowl of their fresh-made steel cut oats and for the finale, you get a giant plate of scrambled eggs made with Tillamook cheese, bacon, sausage and a biscuit the size of your coffee cup. Even though it's a lot, you'll want to try everything.

Another popular breakfast place is the Oak Table Cafe in Sequim, Washington. Not only is all the food made from scratch and to order, you'll get sweeping views of the peninsula and Olympic National Park. According to reviewers on Urban Spoon, the porridge is a must-have and their quiche changes daily with seasonal, fresh ingredients. You also can't go wrong with a big stack of their buckwheat or fresh potato pancakes.

World's best market fare

If you're more of an "eat on the go" type of person, you'll love the amazing selection of bite-size edibles at Pike's Place Market in Seattle. Since you could easily spend hours foraging for grub inside the bustling square, we've picked out a few places you have to go. Start with Beechers handmade mac and cheese. It's gooey, decadent and tastes they way mac and cheese should taste. After that, stop by Le Panier for a fresh-baked croissant or French baguette. Once you've had your fill of pastry, get a few hearty sausages at Uli's Famous Sausage. Get the German Bratwurst; it's one of the best we've had this side of the pond. For some fun visit the Pike Place Fish counter and watch the butchers toss 50 pound wild salmons over patrons’ heads.

For some of the best wine in the state, head to Lake Chelan, which is about four hours Northeast of Seattle and home to 18 wineries. Start off your tour with a trip to Nefarious Cellars. This winery sits on top of a slight hill so you get a sweeping view of the mountains and lake. Grab a bottle of the Viognier, which is a little fruity with hints of peach. Another winery you must check out is Tildio. Winemaker Katy Perry has caused quite the stir with her wines . Lastly, stop by Chelan Ridge Winery, which offers the best views of Lake Chelan from the porch. Not only that, winemaker Lynn Munneke is an absolute joy. You feel like you're chatting with your mom over a few glasses of wine. We loved the 2010 Chardonnay.

A little farther South is another top wine producing region, the Yakima Valley. The valley is home to a whopping 43 wineries, all a little different than the next. One of our first stops in the valley is Gilbert Cellars, which has a stunning new tasting room, a lineup of award-winning vintages and a great vibe. Another must-stop is the Bonair Winery in Zillah. They've been making wines since 1985 and their new tasting chateau is absolutely stunning. We love the White Port. Finish your tour with a trip to Willow Crest, where winemaker Dave has been making wine for more than a decade. Try the Mourvedre, which has hints of black and white pepper.

dinner

Decadent dinners & local hot spots

If you're near Lake Chelan, don't leave without eating dinner at the quaint and cozy Cafè Manson. The small restaurant seats only a handful of people, so you need to make reservations ahead of time. The staff of three is made up of the owners and a chef, and sometimes, another staffer during high season. The food is seasonal, local and healthy, with a selection of gluten-free and vegan options. Start your meal with the fried green tomatoes , which are out of this world.

If you're in Seattle, go to the SeaStar restaurant located in the posh Pan Pacific hotel. The food is fresh and local. When you are there, order from the Raw Bar. They have an incredibly fresh selection of shucked oysters, ceviche and sushi. Another top Seattle restaurant is Wild Ginger, which has won a James Beard award and is the No. 1 Zagat restaurant in the area. The food is Asian inspired and the fragrant duck is a must-have. You also have to dine at one of restaurant empire Tom Douglas' places, like the Bravehorse Tavern, which serves low-key but delicious dishes like homemade pretzels and peanut butter bacon sauce and juicy burgers.

If you're lucky enough to visit the stunning San Juan Islands, grab a bite at The Bluff, which is located inside the Friday Harbor House hotel. The food is innovative and comforting, with dishes like fresh caught salmon with a sea salt foam and heavenly rosemary apple pie. Another place you must eat on the San Juans is the Duck Soup Inn. Rated a "must see" by Rachael Ray, this cozy restaurant about 10 minutes from the harbor has incredible options, like crispy duck confit, sea scallops with ceviche and Lopez island pork meatballs.

Woman touching face

As if stress, genetics and hormones don’t work against our skin enough, winter is fast approaching. So while you’re out stocking up on those new boots and comfy cute sweaters, don’t forget to give your skin some lovin’ as well!

Skin care for the changing seasons

Dannielli Marcelino, Suddenly Slimmer’s licensed medical esthetician and certified laser technician, has a few helpful tips for making this transition as smooth as possible.

Why zits happen between seasons

According to beauty experts, when your skin is transitioning from summer to fall, it has to work harder to regulate moisture for the much drier season, in turn causing more breakouts. While on the surface your skin is being dried out because of the cooler air, it is still trying to produce the same amount of moisture as in the summer beneath the surface. This causes your skin's natural oils to be trapped beneath the surface, causing the increase in acne.

Switch up your products

The last thing most think to do in the midst of a breakout is switch to gentler products. “People have a tendency to be aggressive the minute they see a zit forming,” says Marcelino. But Marcelino says that in the transition from the scorching hot summer to the crisp, dry fall, it is important to use nourishing products. Marcelino says to stay away from the drying products as well as any containing SD alcohol 40 or sodium laureth sulfate. These ingredients aren’t ideal for already-dry factors.

People have a tendency to be aggressive the minute they see a zit forming

The nitty gritty

Little factors can make a huge difference and this holds true for our skin as well. Changing your pillow cases more often will wash away the bacteria and oils that accumulate and in turn cause breakouts. Also, washing your linens with a gentle detergent can help keep your skin free from irritation. Oh, and actually sleeping on those freshly washed pillow cases will help your complexion as well! Do your best to get the recommended eight hours of sleep a night.

Don’t over treat

It is hard to resist slathering a nasty red bump in your go-to zit creams, but Marcelino warns to use discretion with any over-the-counter acne medications. These can most definitely dry out your skin which will cause even more damage in the end.

exfoliantExfoliate

Since dead skin cells are a factor in these seasonal breakouts, unclogging pores is that much more important this time of year. Marcelino recommends chemical exfoliants like glycolic acid and fruit enzymes as well as physical exfoliants. Also, getting a regular professional facial will prove useful, according to Marcelino.

All in all, Marcelino stands by her advice of just keeping your routine simple. “If you use gentle products and maintain a good, simple routine using sunscreen regularly and incorporating chemical peels/exfoliants, your skin will transition smoothly,” she said.

Leftover turkey transformations

Leftover turkey can be included in casseroles, soups, potpies, shepherd's pie and sandwiches, or tossed with pasta, rice or another grain. For an ultra-indulgent meal, turkey can be battered and deep-fried; for a lighter take, saute turkey with vegetables.

Next-day desserts

What were on the minds and Twitter feeds of some of our favorite celebrity moms? Jenny McCarthy talks about her “cougar attack” on Justin Bieber at the AMAs, while Jessica Simpson tweets about her Weight Watchers commercial. Snooki shares photos of baby Lorenzo, while Vanessa Lachey writes about her first Thanksgiving with Camden. Lastly, Kendra Wilkinson shares her Thanksgiving plans with baby Hank.

Jenny McCarthy at the AMA AwardsJenny McCarthy

Jenny McCarthy didn’t just present an award to Justin Bieber at the American Music Awards, she gave him a little kiss on the cheek — and smacked his backside as well.

“Cougar rape? #poorjustin,” she tweeted, with a link to a hilarious photo of her kissing Bieber and him with a tortured look on his face.

“My cub @justinbeiber brought his acceptable and beautifully aged beauty Selena to the AMA after party. Guess I'm back on the prowl. Rww!” she later wrote.

The 40-year-old McCarthy explained herself further on her blog.

“When Cougars Attack,” she tweeted, with a link to her blog, which said in part:

“As he moved toward me, I decided to give him a juicy lipstick kiss on the cheek. I thought it would be kind of funny because he would be delivering his speech with my lipstick remnants on his face, but Luke Bryan blew it. He started wiping the lipstick off, thinking I did it by accident. I knew I had to step up my game and turn my G-rated joke into a PG-13 one. So I cougar-attacked Justin Bieber,” McCarthy wrote.

“When I first saw press photos, I giggled. The look on his face was like he was being choked to death, and then suddenly I had a flashback. Oh no! I did actually choke him! Poor guy. Sometimes I don’t realize my strength, and I didn’t want him to get away too quickly so I held him by his neck. Once I did let him out of my grip, I decided to give him a little smack on the butt.”

Jessica Simpson

“That's a wrap on the @weightwatchers commercial!” Jessica Simpson tweeted, with a link to a photo of her looking slim and trim in black leggings on the set of her commercial.

Simpson has reportedly lost more than 60 pounds since welcoming her daughter Maxwell Drew on May 1.

The new mom has also been dealing with the divorce of her parents, and tweeted this message from Inspirational Women that possibly addresses all the rumors surrounding the separation of Tina and Joe Simpson.

“Eventually all things fall into place. Until then, laugh at the confusion, live for the moments, and know everything happens for a reason.”

Snooki

Snooki

“WOHOO my birthday is this Friday, on Black Friday! Turning 25 & sales everywhere? YES#Sagittarius,” tweeted Snooki.

The new mom also shared this adorable photo of her baby boy.

“My son is so handsome he's my heartbreaker,” she tweeted. “Lorenzo is such a little Jionni amazing.”

What a cute little smirk Lorenzo has on his face!

Vanessa Lachey

“Man, I don't know what's worse; crying hungry baby or whimpering dog who needs to go out? Oh I know, BOTH at the same time! Ahh, my boys!” Vanessa Lachey tweeted.

Vanessa and her husband Nick Lachey welcomed their first son, Camden John, and it sounds like she is gearing up for a fun Thanksgiving with her family.

“Can’t wait to spend Camden’s first Thanksgiving with our family this week! What are your Turkey Day plans?” she tweeted.

“Brine is made, cooled to room temperature & now in fridge. Camden had his last feed of the night & now this mama is off to bed!” she later wrote.

Kendra Wilkinson

“So excited to get my grub on for #Thanksgiving! I can’t wait to eat this,” tweeted Kendra Wilkinson, with a link to her website describing her Thanksgiving plans.

“Here around the Baskett household, we each have our favorite dishes we love to eat during this time of year. Lil Hank’s is definitely the mac and cheese, Hank’s is the turkey and mine is the stuffing! I'm into a lot of flavor, which is why it's my favorite, with gravy allllll over it!” she wrote. “I can’t wait to get my grub on with my family and watch some football!“

“Looks like we'll be heading out of town for #Thanksgiving,” she later tweeted.

“This year we are going to my mom’s house for Thanksgiving so again we will be abandoning our dining room, which we’ve never even used!” she wrote on her website.

This creative breakfast idea is perfect to serve to overnight guests. Not only is it fun, but it will keep everyone full and satisfied for the day's adventures.

Blueberry crepes with creme fraiche

Crepe buffet

Crepes always strike a delicate balance between light and satisfying for breakfast and can be sweet or savory. The French are so smart. We recommend making two crepes for each guest and offering them a variety of homemade and season-appropriate fillings.

Follow this simple crepe recipe and add one-half cup of pumpkin puree to your crepe batter if you want just a touch of pumpkin flavor. They're delicious and enhance the crepe's overall flavor, regardless of what your guests put inside.

What you'll need for serving:

  • Honey
  • Powdered sugar
  • Nutella
  • Whipped cream
  • Brown sugar

Main filling ideas:

1

Fresh seasonal fruit
& creme fraiche

Go to your local farmers market and pick out a variety of seasonal fresh fruit. Make sure they're at the peak of ripeness, diced into tiny cubes and served in separate dishes. Guests can spoon out and fill their crepes with their desired amount of fruit and other fillings, including creme fraiche, as it goes delectably with fruit.

2

Scrambled
eggs

If someone prefers a savory crepe, whip up some scrambled eggs . Add whatever you'd like to your eggs, including bacon, sausage, cheese and fresh diced veggies like onions, green peppers or tomatoes.

3

Baked apples

Baked apples taste best when wrapped in a warm and perfectly sweet crepe. Here is a crepe-friendly baked apple recipe.

Baked apples recipe

  • 4 apples, peeld and diced into cubes
  • Water
  • 1 cup brown sugar

How to talk to your child’s peers about Down syndrome

0
0
Parents of children with Down syndrome share advice on the pros and cons of addressing disabilities with classmates in an ongoing effort to help their child live an inclusive life in a sometimes exclusive world.

When I was 18 weeks pregnant with my son, Charlie, I learned he had Down syndrome. Over the course of my pregnancy, I grew accustomed to a much more heightened sensitivity to the "R" word and jokes people made at the expense of people with disabilities.

Nowadays, I can bat down the use of the "R" word with my eyes closed and one pinky on the tweet button.

But since Charlie's infancy, I've consistently faltered with simple, sincere questions I don't feel prepared to address.

Take this story, for example. One characteristic of babies with Down syndrome is tongue thrusting — almost like they’re licking ice cream, almost constantly. I had read about it, but until I noticed Charlie’s own tongue thrusting as he lay in his NICU isolette, it didn’t occur to me that my child may have that characteristic.

We’re used to it now, enough that I forget it might stand out to others. When a kindergartner first asked me why Charlie was sticking his tongue out, I was not proud of my reply. I said, very simply, “Well, he must be thinking about ice cream!”

What should I have said? What is the best way for parents to speak to their children’s peers about Down syndrome? When is it helpful?

Pros and cons

Parents have mixed reactions and philosophies on whether it's helpful to address a child's disabilities with his or her peers.

Stephanie is Mom to 8-year-old Ivan, who has Down syndrome, and 7-year-old Angelina, who has cerebral palsy. Ivan is in a mainstream second-grade classroom, and Stephanie says it never occurred to her to speak to his class about his Ds diagnosis.

“I am a firm believer in ‘we are more alike than different,’” she says, “and the last thing I want to do is make Ivan feel like he's different.”

The story Stephanie shares reaffirmed her belief that Ivan’s classmates accept him exactly as he is.

“About halfway through last year, his first-grade teacher told me they had a little classroom revelation. I'm not sure how it came up in conversation, but it came out that the class had no idea Ivan had Down syndrome.

“[His classmates] thought, because of his smaller stature and delayed speech, he was just a really smart preschooler who was smart enough to be in the first grade with a little help! The thought of that conversation still delights me.”

Raising awareness

Chase and Zeke

Laurie is a fourth-grade teacher and mom to two sons with Down syndrome, Chase and Zeke, who are both 5 years old. She recently presented at a Down syndrome Association of Greater Charlotte seminar on speaking to a child’s peers about Down syndrome.

The seminar covered a range of scenarios, from speaking with younger children to discussing disability etiquette with high school students.

Laurie shared the lesson plan she used with Chase’s and Zeke’s kindergarten class, as well as her oldest son, Ian’s, kindergarten, first- and second-grade classes.

“We knew [Ian’s] classmates knew Chase, and we wanted to start building that awareness and acceptance and understanding from day one,” she explains.

Advice born from experience

Laurie offers two primary tips to parents considering talking to a child’s class or reading one of many wonderful books available that address disabilities:

  1. Build rapport with your child’s teacher before you ask to talk with the class about your child’s disability. “It's easier to go into the class when you have already built support,” Laurie says.
  2. Practice, practice practice!“Even though you think you may not be emotional about your child's diagnosis, your feelings may be amplified when you are reading [a book] in front of a group of your child's peers,” Laurie points out.

“You need to almost desensitize yourself from the book. If you cry — even tears of happiness — you’re going to make the kids think that Ds is something that you are sad or scared about. [Remember,] your message is about acceptance, not sadness!”

Laurie reports a consistently positive response when she’s spoken with the boys’ classmates. “If you give the students a glimpse into the life of your child, they will be compassionate. [In fact,] talking about Ds brings awareness to the classroom that makes it OK to ask questions in an honest, supportive light,” she says.

Different approaches

For parents who decide a classroom session will be helpful, approaches range from reading a children’s book about disabilities to sharing a homemade “book” about the child that illustrates many common characteristics the child with special needs shares with his or her peers.

Laurie and her husband, Bryan, compiled a pamphlet . The cover includes a picture of Chase and Zeke, side-by-side and all smiles. “Meet Chase and Zeke [last name],” reads the title. “They are part of ________’s kindergarten class this year. They both have Down syndrome, but they are more alike than different.”

Inside, the pamphlet includes a paragraph about what the boys like to do when they are in school and when they are at home with their family. “When they are not in school, they both love the playground, jumping on trampolines, swimming and watching movies, just like most other kindergartners.”

The third page of the pamphlet includes quick facts about Down syndrome in simple language, and the back page lists resources for more information about Down syndrome, as well as the family’s contact information and an invitation to reach out and ask questions.

“I don’t know if it is the lessons, or the school, or the fact that my boys are rock stars, but I can't leave the after-school program without all of their classmates giving them hugs and high fives,” Laurie shares.

Engaging children

Besides reading a children’s book, experts recommend getting children involved in understanding what it might feel like to have the disabilities or challenges that accompany a diagnosis like Down syndrome. Because children with Ds often have speech and fine motor delays, these activities can help typically developing children understand what those delays feel like:

Demonstrating speech delays

Pair children in teams, and give each a large marshmallow. One by one, ask the child to place the marshmallow on the tip of their tongue, inside their mouths, and then talk to each other about their favorite hobby or movie.

This helps the children understand what it feels like to know what you’re trying to say but to struggle with being able to say the words clearly.

Understanding fine motor challenges

Have each child place a sock on one hand. Then ask the child to use their “sock hand” to pick up a pencil and write their name. This exercise helps them understand how difficult it can be to have to work harder at skills many children can do much more easily.

For more information and tips on speaking to your child’s peers, contact your local Down syndrome association or the National Down Syndrome Society.

A Bright Idea: Amorepacific Luminous Effect Brightening Serum & Masque (Review)

Luminous Effect Brightening Serum

Get brighter, clearer skin

Beauty trends from Asia have always been the rage in some way, shape or form. From lengthening mascaras to brightening creams, Asia has given the Western world much gorgeous bounty. We put Amorepacific's latest Luminous Effect Brightening Serum to the test. Read our review below to see how it measured up to its price tag.

From BB creams to water-based moisturizers, Asia has long been an area that women looked up to for their beauty inspirations. Skin-lightening creams are extremely popular with Asian women, and many makeup items, including powders, toners and masks, have some form of lightening agent.

The whitening obsession was driven mainly by a desire from women to reduce heavy pigmentation, and to ensure their skin stayed as soft, flawless and white as a baby's. Amorepacific's new Luminous Effect Brightening Serum and Masque pays homage to these trends.

Amorepacific's new Meladefying Complex, a blend of Asian botanicals, was used to create this serum. The blend includes Milk Thistle, Ginko Leaf, Orange Peel, Magnolia and Lonicera Japonica, which work to inhibit the excessive melanin in the skin. The idea behind this blend is to target the existing melasma to create a brighter, more radiant complexion. The botanicals create a fine net that promises to envelop the skin with a protective veil that boosts moisture levels and helps increase the rate of absorption.

The blend is supposed to work so well that even in the face of environmental stressors, the melanocytes are desensitized, so that melanin is produced only in smaller quantities. And the serum itself is highly concentrated, so it delivers the Meladefying Complex deep into the skin.

After applying the light, non-tacky serum, I was pleased to see how well my skin responded in terms of radiance: It brightened the complexion up immediately, just as the bottle promised. The moisture levels were visibly improved as well. The bottle indicates one to two pumps of the Luminous Effect morning and evening onto cleansed and toned skin. It's also a smart idea to reapply on heavily pigmented areas and to pat the skin for optimal absorption.

The serum retails at $220 for one ounce and it's definitely on the pricey side. However, I have not encountered too many serums that are this light, concentrated, moisturizing and brightening in one convenient bottle. The Luminous Effect Brightening Masque retails for $120 for a set of six, and they are a true luxury. Each sheet is a highly concentrated whitening treatment, and is equivalent to one bottle of serum, which in itself is nothing short of incredible. It's also light as gossamer, made from a soft fiber material and hugs every area of the skin beautifully. The best way to apply this mask is to use right after cleansing and toning, and let it sit for 10 minutes before you remove it. You can follow with a moisturizer and serum if you need the extra whitening and moisture. It's best to use the masque one to two times weekly.

The Future Response Age Defense Cream, another new launch and perfect for environmental skin aging, is a good follow up to the serum, and retails for $195.

The brand has been busy with other launches too. The new Advanced Time Response Intensive Skin Renewal Ampoule Set is the latest breakthrough skin care launch with a new formula which taps into the power of concentrated green tea. Green tea has always been beneficial to skin, whether it's ingested or applied topically. The chief benefits of green tea in a topical treatment include increased collagen density and reduction of cell decomposition. Each ampoule is active and consists of two individual vials mixed together right before application, so it's really potent. You may balk at the $550 price tag, but quality always comes with a price tag.
