You can grab a Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks or eat that delicious pumpkin pie after a big Thanksgiving meal. If you love pumpkin and are considering a little twist to the usual pumpkin pie dessert, then this dip is a great alternative for you.

Loaded beer cheese fries are the game day treat that keeps on giving

Oftentimes my husband and I frequent sports bars on football Sundays and order cheese fries and beers (not healthy, but delicious!), and that's when the little voice inside my head starts telling me I need to create a dish combining beer and cheese fries. Ta-da! It does take a bit of time to make the homemade fries, so if you don't want the hassle, then there are great frozen brands you can substitute with. The sauce is very rich, very good and perfect for sharing with your man (or not!) during the games.

Loaded beer cheese fries recipe

Homemade french fries are covered in a creamy beer cheese sauce and topped with tomatoes, onions, olives and fresh cilantro. For an extra kick, add a few dashes of your favorite hot sauce.

Serves 4

Prep time: 45 minutes | Cook time: 20 minutes | Total time: 1 hour 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 quart canola oil
  • 4 large russet potatoes
  • Sea salt, for seasoning
  • 1 cup beer cheese (see recipe below)
  • 2 medium-size tomatoes, diced
  • 1 small red onion, diced
  • 2 green onions, sliced thin
  • 1/2 cup sliced black olives
  • Chopped fresh parsley or cilantro, for garnish (optional)
  • Hot sauce (optional)

Directions:

  1. Peel the potatoes, and slice them into french fries or wedges.
  2. Place the potatoes in a large bowl of cool water, and soak them for 30 minutes. Drain the potatoes, and pat them dry with paper towels.
  3. To a large, deep pot, add the canola oil, and heat over medium-high heat until the oil reaches about 275 degrees F.
  4. Drop batches of the potatoes into the oil, and fry for about 6 to 7 minutes or until the fries turn a golden brown color. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the cooked fries to a baking sheet lined with paper towels to drain. Repeat with the remaining potatoes.
  5. To assemble the dish, place the prepared fries on a large serving platter.
  6. Generously spoon the warm beer cheese sauce over the top, and then top with diced tomatoes, red and green onions, black olives and parsley or cilantro (and a few dashes of hot sauce, if desired).
  7. Best served warm.

Homemade beer cheese sauce recipe

Spoon this thick, super-rich and creamy beer-infused cheese sauce on top of homemade fries.

Yields 2 cups

Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 15 minutes | Total time: 25 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup beer
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 (12 ounce) block sharp white cheddar cheese, grated

Directions:

  1. To a pot over medium-high heat, add the butter and flour. Cook the mixture for about 3 minutes, whisking constantly.
  2. Add the milk, heavy cream and beer, and bring the sauce to a light simmer for about 2 minutes.
  3. Reduce the heat to medium-low, add the remaining ingredients, and whisk until the cheese has melted and is thick, about 5 minutes.
  4. Pour the sauce into a bowl, and set a aside.

Slow Cooker Sunday: Cranberry barbecue pulled pork sliders

$

With this recipe, though, I let the slow cooker do its thing overnight and woke up to the most succulent, fall-off-the-bone pork, with the delicious smell of cranberries and barbecue sauce permeating the house. Way better than dealing with a 5-pound hunk of raw meat at 8 a.m. any day.

Barbecue sauce and cranberries are really the perfect combination. The smoky sweetness of the barbecue sauce goes so well with the tart pop from the fresh cranberries. It's a simple and festive dinner that's prepped and ready in no time and that everyone will love.

Slow cooker cranberry barbecue pulled pork sliders recipe

This slow cooker pork is prepped in just 5 minutes. Eight hours later, you have a sweet, smoky and tart dinner ready to be piled high onto a slider bun.

Serves 4

Prep time: 5 minutes | Cook time: 8-10 hours | Total time: 8 hours 5 minutes-10 hours 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 5-pound pork shoulder, bone-in
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1-1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1/2 cup cranberries
  • 4 slider buns
  • Chopped green onion, for garnish

Directions:

  1. Season the pork generously with salt and pepper, and place it into the slow cooker.
  2. Pour the broth, barbecue sauce and cranberries on top.
  3. Cook on low for 8 to 10 hours, until the pork is falling off the bone.
  4. Remove the pork from the slow cooker, and shred it. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker, and toss in the cooking liquid.
  5. Pile the pork onto a slider bun, garnish with chopped green onions, and serve.

Our favorite misheard Adele lyrics

"Come On Eileen" – Dexys Midnight Runners

"Come on Eileen
Oh, I swear what he means (what he means)
At this moment you mean everything
You in that dress
My thoughts I confess
Verge on dirty
Oh, come on Eileen"

Easy enough to decode.

"Take On Me" – A-ha

"Today isn't my day to find you
Shying away
I'll be coming for your love, OK?

"Take on me (take on me),
Take me on (take on me)
I'll be gone
In a day or two"

Y'all, they're basically singing about a one-night stand. And you know we used to shriek along to the high notes.

"Walk This Way" – Aerosmith

"Backstroke lover always hidin' 'neath the covers
Till I talked to your daddy, he say
He said, 'You ain't seen nothin' till you're down on a muffin
Then you're sure to be a-changin' your ways'"

This, legitimately, is the least inappropriate part of the entire song.

2014 Song lyrics interpretations

"Dancing in the Dark" – Bruce Springsteen

"Hey baby I'm just about starving tonight
I'm dying for some action
I'm sick of sitting 'round here trying to write this book
I need a love reaction
Come on now baby gimme just one look

"You can't start a fire sitting 'round cryin' over a broken heart
This gun's for hire
Even if we're just dancin' in the dark"

The Boss is looking for a rebound. Interested?

"Like a Virgin" – Madonna

"Like a virgin
Touched for the very first time
Like a virgin
When your heart beats next to mine."

Who was singing this song before they even knew what a virgin was?

"(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party!)" – Beastie Boys

"You pops caught you smoking and he said, 'No way!'
That hypocrite smokes two packs a day
Man, living at home is such a drag
Now your mom threw away your best porno mag (Busted!)"

Man, we screamed this so loud and thought we were so cool. (Busted!)

"Faith" – George Michael

"Well I guess it would be nice
If I could touch your body
I know not everybody
Has got a body like you"

Years later, a whole new generation sang this song when Limp Bizkit covered it.

"White Wedding" – Billy Idol

"Hey little sister, what have you done?
Hey little sister, who's the only one?
Hey little sister, who's your superman?
Hey little sister, who's the one you want?
Hey little sister, shotgun"

Shotgun wedding, right?

"I Want Candy" – Bow Wow Wow

"Candy on the beach, there's nothing better
But I like candy when it's wrapped in a sweater
Someday soon I'll make you mine,
Then I'll have candy all the time"

Clearly not talking about candy.

"I Want Your Sex" – George Michael

Do we even need to quote this song? You know the lyrics.

"Never Say Never" – Romeo Void

"The slump by the courthouse
With windburn skin
That man could give a f***
About the grin on your face
As you walk by, randy as a goat
He's sleepin' on papers
When he'd be warm in your coat

"I might like you better
If we slept together"

We've felt this way about a lot of people now that we're adults. Is it possible Romeo Void brainwashed us in our youth?

Jonathan Knight walks offstage during NKOTB show

NKOTB will be setting sail on Jan. 14, 2015 with their brand-new show that will take place aboard a cruise ship. The series will chronicle the group's five-day journey with about 3,000 fans from New York to Bermuda.

"Every year, my bandmates and I go on a cruise with 3,000 of our wildest and most adoring fans," NKOTB's Donnie Wahlberg said. "For the first time ever, we're gonna take you behind the scenes to see what it's like. Three thousand fans, 20 cameras — that equals a whole lot of potential chaos."

NKOTB at sea on your TV

The show will debut with a one-hour premiere that promises to be a wild ride into a crazy trip full of insane fans. The NKOTB annual cruise trips are so popular that they sell out way before they even have a sail date. The waiting list is in the thousands and some have to wait years until they can book their trip with the group.

The boy band (or now, man band), made up of Jordan and Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Danny Wood and Wahlberg, has been enjoying these trips long after their initial success in the '80s and '90s. Their famous classic hits include "I'll be Loving You (Forever)" and "Step by Step."

Nick Carter and Jordan Knight merge worlds with new song

To make the wait easier until the show airs in January, you can see a Meet the Castaways special with the members of NKOTB on Monday, Nov. 24 at 8/7c, and an ET December special as well that will feature the history of the band from the time they first became famous in the 1980s.

The thanklessness of motherhood

$
0
0

Just last week, I had to turn around immediately after school drop-off, drive back home to find Lily's cleats, and return to school just to deliver them to her. Did I get so much as a thank you?

No, I got attitude for forgetting her socks.

Back when I brought my laundry to the wash and dry in college, I certainly mustered up a smile and a thank you as it was presented to me all clean and folded in my plastic laundry basket (those were the days). My children, however, seem to think the clothes magically end up clean and organized in their drawers while they sleep. If only.

Dinner is met with eye rolls rather than appreciation and, God forbid, I not have their favorite cereal stocked in the pantry. But when I do have it stocked, 99 percent of the time, do you think I get so much as a "thanks?" No. I do not.

Obviously, I do these things because I love my children and taking care of them — asses and all — is what I signed up for. But every once in a while, a sincere "thank you for everything you do, Mom" would be nice.

That's why, once I became a mother, Thanksgiving took the cake as my favorite holiday. A day to really reflect on all that I'm grateful for, and even better, a day to be lavished in gratitude myself. None of the Hallmark cheesiness of Mother's Day and no messy breakfasts in bed to clean up after. Just one day a year to truly be thankful for my three biggest blessings, and to be celebrated by them, as well. Sign me up!

Except it never seems to happen like that.

"What are you thankful for?" I asked the kids a few years back, desperately fishing for compliments when they weren't flowing as I'd hoped.

"Poop," Evan enthusiastically responded. Poop? Oooookay, strike one. Luckily I have three kids.

"Eating ice cream," Ben followed up with. Ice cream? None for you today, punk.

"Ummmmm..." Lily was thoughtful. This was what I'd been waiting for. She was my new favorite, perhaps for life.

"Daddy," she finally pronounced.

Daddy? Daddy?

Daddy, who was napping on the couch and hadn't or wouldn't lift a finger to prepare the delicious dinner you're about to inhale? Daddy? Daddy didn't carry you and birth you and sure as hell isn't sporting stretch marks because of you. Daddy? And ice cream? And poop?! Who the hell raised these children and did they come with a return policy?

"That's nice," I mustered up. "What about me?"

"Of course, you," she responded.

Well, OK. Of course me.

After Daddy, poop and ice cream.

That's motherhood for you.

The Thanksgiving Project

Proceeds from my book will go toward supporting The Thanksgiving Project, an official 501(c)(3) charity that has helped over 4,000 families celebrate the holiday. Keep reading to find out how Jill Smokler and the Scary Mommy Nation started this worthy cause!

Scary Mommy has always represented the honest side of motherhood. We believe there is no shame in admitting parenting is far from easy and the gig is not always all it's cracked up to be.

Together, we struggle with feeding babies, not getting nearly enough sleep and showering far less frequently than we'd like. We commiserate over sending kindergarteners to school in the fall and groan when the year comes to a screeching halt in the spring. We vent about our tweens' attitude problem, the smell of our sons' rooms and our husbands' snoring. Motherhood is easier because we share it — the good, the bad and the scary — with one another.

But for all the struggles we share, being able to provide the basics for our children shouldn't be one of them. Back in mid-November of 2011, I read several upsetting confessions on the Scary Mommy Confessional:

I can barely afford to feed my family. It's humiliating.

I am so broke I went to get a food box. They told me I make too much money and I just cried and cried. I have no food. I don't live extravagantly. I work at the welfare office. I can't even tell my family how bad it is.

Thanksgiving dinner? Ha. I can't even buy a loaf of bread.

My husband just lost his job. I have no idea how we are going to put food on the table.

As I began the preparations for my own Thanksgiving dinner, I couldn't shake the fact that moms — moms just like me — wouldn't be able to have celebrations of their own. Thanksgiving, a holiday that should be about nothing but love and gratitude, was anything but for these moms. On a whim, I turned to my community: If these women (or others who were struggling as well) could step up and ask for help, would the community join me in helping them?

Some quick research told me that the average Thanksgiving dinner costs $50. I offered to buy the first two people who needed help a grocery store gift card and hoped to match up anyone else I could. I thought maybe we'd be able to help a dozen or so families. Instead, I learned just how amazing the Scary Mommy community is: In four short days, we raised $18,000, buying dinner for almost 400 families in need. It was one of the proudest moments of my life.

Thanksgiving is never going to be perfect; the turkey will be overcooked, someone will forget to add sugar to the cranberry sauce or the pie will fall on the floor moments before serving. But, like the low moments in motherhood, those things are quickly forgotten as we remember what really matters: our children, and our great love for them. Because that's what the holiday is all about.

In her all-new book, Scary Mommy's Guide to Surviving the Holidays, Jill Smokler and other Scary Mommy Nation contributors talk of all the highs and lows of the holiday season.

Workout not working? This is probably why

$
0
0

Where do I get my claims? Through hours and hours of teaching workouts to people, men and women, all over the globe. No, this was not a verified scientific study; rather it is my personal observations through experience.

So WHAT IS this "big obstacle?"

Ready, here it comes... intensity, aka level of physical exertion.

Sounds obvious right? However, it's the culprit keeping so many of us from achieving our goals.

Lack of intensity comes in many forms and can be cured through a variety of ways, but the bottom line is, people are OK with getting "moderately uncomfortable," but we rarely push ourselves to the extent we can.

Our bodies are at least 50 percent stronger than our minds let us believe; however, it’s human instinct to pace ourselves down to preserve our energy and "make it through." That's the problem with most 45 - 60 minute workouts, the levels of intense segments are too long for us to really push the limits, Rather, we lower our effort level to a state that allows us to preserve ourselves.

What can you do? Here are a couple ways to Get more out of your workouts:

Think "get uncomfortable"

Don't be afraid to get breathless and keep the goal at the front of your mind. For example: run faster! Cardio lovers may prioritize time but try adding sprint bursts to your runs. Not running? You can do this with anything. Bike? bike faster! Elliptical, go harder... you get the point.

Have a plan

Without a plan, a trip to the gym can quickly become a complete waste of time. To avoid wandering aimlessly from one piece of equipment to the next, sketch out your workouts ahead of time and set clear training goals. When you go in with a purpose you will maximize your time.

Exercise "in the moment"

Rather than trying to work out for a long period of time, focus on what you are doing, rather than what's still ahead. It's better to go so hard your first couple intervals and need more recovery time than to breeze through the workout. You can do anything for a limited period of time, and it allows your body (and mind) to push harder than it could for unknown time intervals.

Don't multi-task your time

It's tempting to fire off emails on the stationary bike (or browse Instagram on your phone), but a trip to the gym should be the time you disconnect from all of this and focus on working your body. Up the intensity by using the timer on the machine to do intervals (full steam ahead).

Exercise does work, but you have to work it; it's the one thing someone else can't do for you.

Here are five awesome "go-to" interval workouts (no equipment required).

Note: These workouts give you the framework; you decide how hard you can work.

Please note, there are several other factors that could be obstacles in keeping you from results, such as consistency, diet, etc. but this is the number one problem I notice when it comes to the time people actually spend working out.

So next workout, know what you're doing and really work it!

The 5 stages of grief upon hearing we may run out of chocolate

Mars, Inc. and Barry Callebaut Group, the world's largest confectionery producers, have warned of a potential chocolate shortfall by 2020 due to the fact that we're apparently eating way too much chocolate. (Is that a thing?)

I'm not ashamed to say that upon hearing this news, I had some feelings that can best be described by the five stages of grief.

Denial... Oh no you didn't, chocolate!

oh no you didn't GIF

GIF credit: Giphy

Chocolate shortage? These words do not compute. Supply and demand, right? I'll pay $100 for a candy bar. Really, I will. But I will not allow there to be a chocolate shortage. Nope.

Anger... Fine. Chocolate, we're no longer friends.

angry Amy Poehler GIF

GIF credit: Giphy

You want to play like that? Fine. I don't need you anyway. Think of all the money I'll save. And the pounds I'll shed. This will be great.

Bargaining... Wait, just let me smell it one more time?

Van Damme chocolate GIF

GIF credit: Giphy

Let me just get one more whiff of that chocolaty goodness. Maybe one tiny bite? If I can have just one more Hershey's bar, I'll give up my firstborn, I promise.

Depression... But what about birthdays?

Grumpy Cat GIF

GIF credit: Giphy

A birthday without chocolate cake is not a celebration. It's just not. So friends, take note. Unless there is a ginormous chocolaty confection with candles on top, my birthday is canceled.

Acceptance... In the form of cookie butter.

cookie butter GIF

GIF credit: Giphy

OK, fine. I guess if I can't have chocolate, then there's always cookie butter. Plus, we've got a good six years before this shortage even happens. By then some evil genius will have likely invented something even better than chocolate, and we'll be all, "Chocolate who?"

After all this talk... I need all the chocolate, please.

Celebs 101: 7 Things to know about OITNB's Diane Guerrero

$
0
0

Guerrero is on her way to the top now. That's evident by her back-to-back roles, first on Netflix's prison dramedy Orange Is the New Black, followed by The CW's breakout comedy Jane the Virgin, where Guerrero plays Jane's BFF. Before she makes it huge and you're just another one of the millions on her bandwagon, get to know her now and be the first to share your adoration with your friends. We have some must-know knowledge about the Colombian actress.

Diane Guerrero opens up on how her past influences her OITNB character

1) How much did she struggle before nabbing these roles?

A lot. It turns out, Guerrero was just about to throw in the towel.

"So when I got the audition, I remember I was talking to my dad, and I was like, 'This is not going to work!'" Guerrero told Stylecaster. "I'm sure everyone will tell you when they get a part in something really special everything that happened that day, and I'm pretty sure everyone will tell you that they were ready to throw in the towel that same day, and that's exactly how my experience went."

2) So what was the audition like for Orange Is the New Black?

"It was cool because the breakdown [casting call] said to not wear any makeup, and to not do your hair, and to look like you just rolled out of bed," Guerrero shared. "So I remember I just wore a T-shirt and sweatpants and put my hair up, and that was it!"

3) How does she stay cool on the red carpet?

Turns out she doesn't. "This is why I say no to a lot of events, because I get really overwhelmed and scared, and just feel like I can't do it," Guerrero shared. "It's a hassle finding something to wear and getting makeup and hair ready, and I do a lot of it myself. And then, when I am with everyone else who had their hair and makeup done, I end up feeling like, oh well, I didn't use enough hair spray, clearly."

4) What shows is she binge-watching?

She's basically our television twin. "I just binge-watched New Girl," she said. "I know I'm late to the game, but I've been binge-watching a lot of those shows that I let slip through my fingers. I also love Parenthood. It's such an emotional show and I'm always thinking, 'Can I just stop crying or can they just stop crying?' I'm also really into Red Band Society. You'll cry and you'll laugh."

Everything we needed to know for OITNB Season 2

5) How has life been as a Colombian-American?

Not entirely good. When Guerrero was 14, her parents were deported back to Columbia and she was left alone in the States. "It's something that happened where I just felt so alone and sort of abandoned," Guerrero admitted to Fusion. "Obviously, you go through different stages of being angry at your folks, being angry at yourself, being angry at America, at your country. You go through different things and then you learn to accept it."

6) Were there any particularly hard moments she faced on her own?

"You have no supervision, you're kind of doing it on your own and you're forced to just make all of these decision on your own," she shared. "I mean, for me, picking a college was really difficult. I wish I had had my parents there kind of supervising me. But I chose well, I did OK."

7) What's one of the biggest celebs she's met?

For Guerrero, it has to be Latin singer Juanes, who did the theme song for Jane the Virgin. "When he came in, I just I lost it," Guerrero told Latina of the time Juanes dropped by the set. "And I was like, 'Diane, just get it together, you're fine, you're good,' and then he was standing right next to me!' And all of a sudden I forgot how to speak Spanish, which was my first language — apparently, it's not anymore. I forgot how to speak Spanish, and then all of a sudden Spanglish started coming and then that's when I was like totally bugging out 'cause I was just bugging out. And he was so sweet to me and just so lovely, and he was telling me congratulations and I was like, 'Umm, you're kind of the biggest person that I've ever met.'"

What can we say? We're absolutely enthralled by Guerrero's story and her energy. We're sure big things are ahead for this one-time craigslist-trolling actress. Jump on the bandwagon early and enjoy her ride to the top.

Sinéad O'Connor's comments about U2 are so harsh, we're still not over it

The move was heavily criticized, with many saying U2 forced their music on people as the album appeared in users' music libraries automatically. And Sinéad O'Connor appears to be offended by this, because she has compared it to terrorism.

During an interview with the Daily Mail, the "Nothing Compares 2 U" singer revealed that she is unforgiving of the rockers "for not standing by their album [Songs Of Innocence] and just putting it out," and that they instead chose to "force it on people who didn't want it in the first place."

U2 frontman Bono won't be cycling in Central Park again anytime soon

"What they did with iTunes was a badly judged move," she added. "There was something almost terrorist about it. I'm really not a U2 fan but it wasn't at all kosher invading people's lives like that. It was bad management."

That's a pretty hectic comparison, and it's evident O'Connor is no fan, much like many of the users who got the free album, because Apple was forced to create an app that allowed users to remove the album from their music libraries.

"Funny thing is, the kid who devised the app that removed the U2 album from people's computers, he made a fortune, apparently," O'Connor confessed to the publication, with a laugh.

However, U2 is not the only band O'Connor is not a fan of: If you don't remember, she had a rather public feud with Miley Cyrus, and the singer explained just why she has a problem with the former Disney star.

VIDEO: Sinéad O'Connor is still talking about Miley Cyrus

"I was right when I said the Catholic church sexualized minors and I'm right about the music business doing the same. I know what I'm talking about," O'Connor told the publication.

"Miley even looks like a kid herself. She's a very young-looking young woman. She's come up through Disney, she was Hannah Montana, the whole thing. The music industry is sexualizing the artists that look most like kids. Lady Gaga, who knows that half her audience are minors, was inviting them to simulate masturbation. What kind of people do that?

"As an artist you have to be conscious of minors," O'Connor continues. If she [Miley] wants to stuff dollars down her throat and wear next to nothing — fine. But not in an environment where minors are going to be exposed to it."

This 'art' is $450 at Anthropologie, but you can DIY it for $20

Have you ever paged through a catalog or been online shopping and come across something and wondered, "Umm... what the heck?" That was my reaction to a current wall hanging for sale at Anthropologie. I love the store, but hey, $450 is a little steep for a piece of tangled wool wrapped around some sticks. Here's how to make it for under $20!

Supplies

anthropolgie wall hanging knock off

  • A piece of sturdy cardboard at least 10 x 20 inches (Repurposed from an old calendar — cost, free)
  • 1 yard of wool roving (you could probably use batting or pillow stuffing) — you can buy it on Amazon for less than $10
  • Raffia (I used dried ornamental grass from my yard — cost, free)
  • Black yarn — cost can range from $4 to $8 a skein
  • White thick and bumpy yarn
  • A 10-inch dowel rod — costs less than $3 at a hobby store
  • Cotton twine — costs 50 cents for a small skein
  • Scissors
  • Music (this takes a while to weave, so grab some tunes)

The black and white yarns I used were repurposed from scarves I purchased from a thrift store. I paid $1 a piece for the scarves and unraveled them for the yarn. My total cost for materials was $16 plus tax.

Step 1

Athropologie wall hanging knock off

  • First, we need to make a loom. Measure half-inch increments across the top and bottom of the 10-inch sides of the cardboard rectangle.
  • Cut down about a half an inch on the markings. With several yards of twine, notch one end of the twine into one of the end slits.
  • Pull the other end of the twine to the opposite slit in the cardboard.
  • Continue to wind the loom, wrapping the twine around the cardboard until you reach the end. Cut another few yards and repeat. You will need to have two strings in each slit.

Step 2

Athropologie wall hanging knock off

  • Cut 3 yards of the black yarn. Fold it in half. The yarn will be double thickness when you weave.
  • Leave a 2-inch tail and begin to weave. The yarn needs to go under or over each string. When you get to the opposite end, weave back the other direction, being sure to weave in the opposite position of the row above (if the prior row is under the twine, then weave over the twine and vice-versa).
  • Weave three rows then tie off the yard at the end.

Step 3

anthropologie wall hanging knock off

  • Add the raffia/grass layer. In the original, it looks like the raffia is one long piece. My dried grass was shorter, so I had to do two separate sections. In the end I trimmed the "bends" on the ends to make the hanging even. But you will need to do four rows of raffia.
  • Next, add the white yarn. Double the yarn before you begin as well. The white yarn section should measure 2-1/2 inches. Weave loosely and pull out loops here and there for a tousled look.
  • Tie off the ends when you are finished with this section.

Step 4

Athropologie wall hanging knock off

  • Next, add another layer of black yarn. This area is done in a "u" shape. I weaved a 4-row layer and tied it off. I followed with a two-row layer, two vertical rows in and finished off with another two-row layer one vertical row in.
  • Now add the wool roving. You'll need to be gentle with this stuff; it will come apart. I loosely wove 4 rows of this. Tuft the roving in various places and push the roving up on the sides to fill in any gaps in the loom.
  • At the end of the 4th row, tuck the end of the roving into one of the back loops of the previous rows.

Step 5

Athropologie wall hanging knock off

  • For this section, I used the tassels off the white scarf I unraveled. But, to make your own, you will need to cut 12-inch lengths of yarn. I laid two pieces of yarn together and folded it in half.
  • To add the fringe, insert the loop end under one of the twine rows. Bring the loop end over the twine then grab the tails and pull it through. This makes a "lark's head" knot. Slide the knot head up towards the base of the roving. Tie 2 layers of fringe on each vertical row.

Step 6

Anthropologie wall hanging knock off

  • To finish, insert your 10-inch dowel rod through the loops at the top of the loom. You can now cut the twine at the top of the loom and tie knots at the back of the woven piece to secure the dowel.
  • At the bottom of the woven piece, cut the the loom and tie a knot as close as possible to the fringe. I tied a double knot at the base of each fringe and cut off the excess twine.
  • Take an 8-inch length of twine and tie an end on each side of the dowel to hang.
  • Trim off any excess yarn and grass off the sides.
  • Ta-da! Hang up your garbage art and marvel at your designer hack that cost hundreds less.

Note: The finished size of my wall hanging was 9 x 18 inches. The Anthropologie piece is 9.5 by 20 inches. I tried to make is as close as possible, but I'm not a master weaver and I am not willing to fork out $450 for the original. I can live with it a couple of inches shorter.

Guardians of the Galaxy cast's epic dance-off (VIDEO)

Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn: Bonus clip during credits adds "entire new element to the Marvel universe"

Buzzfeed News have shared the video of the epic dance-off that didn't make it to the big screen, but you'll be happy to see it now.

The scene is when Chris Pratt's character Peter Quill tries to distract villain Ronan the Accuser, played by Lee Pace, from destroying an entire planet — and he does this all by using some good old '80s dance moves.

"Dance-off, bro — it's me versus you," Quill tells Ronan the Accuser, who gladly accepts the challenge.

The details and planning behind this hilarious cut scene were revealed by Star-Lord himself.

Chris Pratt gets in character as Star-Lord at children's hospital

"We were filming what was essentially, you know, the climax of the entire movie… and I was dancing," Pratt told Buzzfeed News with a laugh. "I was standing there… in front of 200 extras in full alien makeup. And none of them knew what the hell was happening either. They thought they were on a serious movie because of all the time and the effort that had been put into their makeup. So I just had this energy of, like, 'What am I doing?'"

The script didn't specify how Pratt should dance and he got no help from a pro, so he did some of his own research.

"I did have a pretty good sense of the era from which I would be drawing dance moves, given that Quill draws all of his pop-culture references from a certain time frame of basically 1985 and earlier," he explained. "So I thought he wouldn't necessarily be doing the Dougie because he wouldn't know what that is… I did some research on ['80s dancing], and it happens to be right in my dance wheelhouse anyways."

9 Details about Marvel's Black Panther, female superhero and more

Pratt is not the only one who shows off his dancing skills during the film. Zoe Saldana, who plays Gamora, also gets in on the action.

"I was just trying different things, because I was just so nervous that what we were doing wasn't going to work. I'm not even sure whose idea it was, but they just sprung into the idea that we would [all] do the entire dance-off. At that point, [we thought] if this whole thing doesn't work, at least we're going to have a helluva time and a lot of fun doing it," Pratt confessed.

The exclusive outtake from the summer blockbuster will available on Blu-ray edition out Dec. 9, but for now you can watch the video below.

The Mamafesto: Why this mom says #ThxBirthControl!

Thanks, Birth Control: The Song

Thanks, Birth Control: The Song

Birth control has many wonderful features. It helps prevent pregnancy, regulates hormones, relieves cranky period symptoms, alleviates issues associated with a range of things like PCOS and more! And, most important, for many women, it has been instrumental in helping form the family they want. Newsflash: Most of us (yes, even the married ones!) enjoy sex. But that doesn't mean each time we have sex we are looking to reproduce. So the fact that birth control exists — and in many forms — is a wonderful, wonderful thing.

I can't imagine having gotten pregnant while in college. I was knee-deep in academia, I had a plan and goals, and neither of them included a kid right at that moment. Thanks to birth control, I was able to plan to get pregnant with my husband. I was also able to plan how many kids we were going to have as well. I put out a quick call on Twitter to see what other moms were up to when it came to birth control. While a couple of them tweeted back that their husbands got "the snip" (aka a vasectomy), pretty much everyone else let me know they were on some form of birth control, from the NuvaRing to an IUD and everything else in between.

This year, Bedsider.org, an online birth control support network for women 18 to 29, operated by The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, created a video that's all about thanking birth control for being so awesome and allowing women control over their lives and how and when they can make a family. The video, done in the spirit of Schoolhouse Rock and Free to Be... You & Me, features a catchy song that looks at all the reasons there are to love birth control. You can also check out their #ThxBirthControl hashtag and postcards to declare your love for birth control!

So, #ThxBirthControl for allowing me to decide when to have a child and for allowing me to form my family and life in a way that works best for us!

Bacon-wrapped Italian meatloaf is a fresh take on dinner tonight

If you eat it immediately after it comes out of the oven, then you will be in for a delicious treat as the melted cheese oozes out from the center of each slice. The base recipe for the meatloaf, which comes from my husband's Sicilian mom, is one I've tweaked constantly, and this is one of the family's favorite versions.

There's a lot of bacon in it, I know, but after cooking Italian meatloaves — or polpettone — for years, I have gone through much trial and error, taking away an ingredient or adding a new one until I liked what I had. If you are not a big bacon eater and worried about the amount of bacon in this recipe, then just peel it off your slice of the meatloaf and enjoy the tender meat inside.

Bacon-wrapped meatloaf with ham, cheese and spinach

Bacon-wrapped meatloaf with ham, cheese and spinach recipe

Using my basic meatloaf recipe I have been using for years, I wrapped the meatloaf in a layer of thin, woven slices of bacon. The result was a tender and moist meatloaf with crispy bacon skin outside.

Serves 4

Prep time: 25 minutes | Cook time: 35 minutes | Total time: 1 hour

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices sandwich bread, crusts cut off
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 9 ounces ground pork
  • 9 ounces ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 1-1/2 small onions, grated or finely chopped, divided
  • 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Salt and pepper
  • 9 ounces (more or less) very thin, long slices bacon
  • 4 big slices cooked ham
  • 6 thin slices cheese (individually wrapped cheese for sandwiches works well)
  • Handful fresh spinach
  • Olive oil
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 3 sprigs fresh rosemary
  • 2 cups frozen peas

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, soak the slices of bread in the milk.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, ground pork, egg, 1 onion, Parmesan cheese, the milk-soaked bread, salt and pepper. Mix very well until very compact like a ball of dough.
  3. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  4. Place a big piece of parchment paper on your work table.
  5. Onto the parchment paper, place the ball of meat, and then flatten it evenly until you have a rectangular shape.
  6. On top of the meat, place the slices of ham, the cheese and the spinach.
  7. With the help of the parchment paper, roll carefully the meat around the filling to close up the loaf. Make sure the roll is very compact and none of the filling is sticking out. Set aside.
  8. On the same parchment paper, lay 3 slices of bacon horizontally, adding more slices to attain the same length as the loaf. Make sure the bacon slices overlap at the edges so they don't open while cooking.
  9. Weave more bacon slices vertically into the horizontal bacon strips. Measure the size of the roll so the bacon weave corresponds with its size.
  10. Place the meatloaf onto the woven bacon, and wrap the bacon tightly around the roll.
  11. In a hot Dutch oven or large saucepan with a little olive oil over medium-high heat, brown all sides of the meatloaf. Turn it carefully with the help of a fork and a spoon.
  12. If you're using a Dutch oven, then distribute the rosemary around the meatloaf, and if you're using a saucepan, then transfer the meatloaf to a baking pan before adding the rosemary. Place the Dutch oven or baking pan into the oven, and roast for 20 minutes or until the meatloaf is cooked through. Halfway through the cooking time, pour the wine onto the meatloaf.
  13. While the meatloaf cooks, in a saucepan with olive oil over medium heat, sauté the remaining 1/2 onion, and then add the peas. Cook for 10 minutes, and then season with salt and pepper.
  14. Serve the meatloaf with the peas.

I'm not inviting my toddlers to Thanksgiving dinner

$

While I am technically a new parent with young children, this isn't my first rodeo. When I think about planning an elaborate holiday meal for what truly is my favorite time of year, all I can think about is one vivid memory of taking my two sons to a restaurant on family vacation last year.

The scene was typical. We waited to be seated, then crowded around a long table with extended family and put our two toddlers in highchairs. In under 10 minutes, the toddlers were trying to stand up, jump overboard and run through the restaurant. My husband and I each took a kid and focused all of our attention on him.

While this was a brilliant strategy to get them to shut up and stop embarrassing us, it meant we didn't get one hot bite of food. We didn't get one drink of an adult beverage without a kid trying to stick a dirty hand in the beer glass.

A few weeks later, my sister complimented our family on how well-behaved the kids were when we went out to eat. To that I said, "Ha, ha, ha, you have no idea what you're talking about." We were the proverbial ducks in the pond — calm on the surface and swimming furiously underneath.

That is not happening this Thanksgiving. Gorging myself on delicious carby food is something I look forward to all year long. I don't want to spend the meal letting my deep-fried turkey get cold while I bounce a toddler on my knee or cut up his food and beg him to eat it. Like I said, my kids aren't crazy monsters. They just haven't mastered the art of multicourse dining yet.

The good thing about my toddlers is that they have a rock-solid nap time from noon to 3 p.m. every day, no exceptions. While I do look forward to making Norman Rockwell memories with my family as my husband carves a glistening turkey at the head of the table, it's not happening this year.

The kids will nap. I will eat and drink. I'll wake them up when it's time for a turkey sandwich.
