In defense of Selfie: Here's why it shouldn't have been canceled

This show was one of the few new series that made me laugh out loud this season. Here are a few reasons I'm going to miss it.

6 Reasons Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is infinitely better this year

1. Eliza and Henry were good for each other

Though the story was initially about Henry teaching Eliza how to be a better person, it was also about Eliza teaching him to loosen up and enjoy life. Their advice to each other didn't always work out perfectly, but it was fun to see them try. Henry didn't like it when Eliza and Charmonique set him up on the biggest blind date ever, but he did accept that maybe he should try to find someone new. He was planning to hop into that cab even before Eliza told him to do it, which showed how much he learned from her.

2. Eliza had a huge journey ahead of her

Every character on a TV show has room to grow and transform throughout a series. But Eliza started out in a unique place: She was pretty darn hate-able. So where else could she go except up? I was looking forward to seeing Henry take her from a narcissistic twit to an intelligent and caring woman. Actually, she had already made some changes. In a recent episode, she actually did some babysitting when Charmonique needed to go to her high school reunion. Who would ever have expected Eliza to do that in the first episode?

3. The other characters were hilarious

Eliza and Henry stole the show, but the rest of the cast was spectacular as well. I loved in the episode "Even Hell Has Two Bars," where we got to see a bunch of people from the office interacting at the estate. Saperstein was my favorite part of that episode and it was great to see that he was just as into having fun as Eliza was. His cannonball into the pond (after Henry's glorious example) had me laughing out loud. I actually replayed both of those moments on my DVR, laughing harder each time.

4. The romance was just starting to ramp up

When Henry said that classic line from the original Pygmalion play, "I've grown accustomed to your face," I just about died. The original play this series was based on showed that two very different people from two very different backgrounds could fall in love, and I was excited to see how the show would play out that part of the story. I was glad it wasn't happening quickly, but that it was slowly being given to us in tiny bites. Just a few looks here and there, a few kindnesses between them (such as Henry eating his lunch over a trashcan with Eliza) were enough to show that they cared. In the latest episode, "Never Block Cookies," Henry met a woman who looked perfect for him. But I'm betting that relationship is going to prove to him that he needs something more in his life.

5. Eliza was a mirror no one wanted to face

I've seen a few comments here and there about how some people disliked Eliza and found her too conceited. The funny thing is, we all know an Eliza. In fact, more than a few of us are Eliza. She represents a growing trend in our society: people who are more interested in how their lives look online than interacting with real-life people. They're rude and sometimes bully people because they can do so anonymously. While it was sad and sometimes angering to see behavior like that, it needed to be done. By taking a current issue and wrapping it into a comedy based on an old story, the show was giving us a chance to look at the world we live in now.

For older children who can safely find and remove toothpicks, you can use additional toothpick halves to attach all the fruit pieces to the muffin, which will keep the muffin more intact. If you don't plan to serve all 12 muffins right away, then just use the amount of fruit needed to decorate the turkeys you'll be eating, and store the rest of the muffins for later.

Serves 12

Prep time: 40 minutes | Bake time: 20 minutes | Total time: 1 hour

Ingredients:

For the muffins

  • 1-1/2 cups whole-wheat pastry flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup melted butter (or coconut oil)
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree

For the turkey decoration

  • 2 red apples
  • 2 green pears
  • 6 toothpicks
  • 12 red grapes
  • 14 dried apricots
  • 24 whole cloves

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F, and line a muffin pan with wrappers.
  2. In a large bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and pumpkin spice.
  3. In a smaller bowl, whisk the eggs with the melted butter (or coconut oil) and honey.
  4. Pour the contents of your smaller bowl into the dry ingredients, and mix well.
  5. Gently fold in the pumpkin puree until just combined.
  6. Spoon the batter into the paper-lined muffin pan.
  7. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes, until the muffins are golden brown and an inserted toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Remove the muffins from the pan, and place them on a wire rack to cool.
  9. Once your muffins are completely cooled, prep your fruit by slicing the apples and pears into 1/2-inch-wide spears with visible peels.
  10. Use a knife to slice a slit in the back end of the muffin top, and then insert 5 of these spears into the slit, alternating colors and making sure the peels face the front.
  11. Break a toothpick in half, and poke it into the front end of the muffin top.
  12. Use your knife to poke a hole into the tip of a grape, and then slice a small strip from a dried apricot, and insert it into the hole.
  13. Poke 2 cloves into the grape, centered above the apricot beak, and then poke the grape onto the toothpick half that's in the muffin.
  14. Slice an apricot in half for wings, and use a knife to poke holes on either side of the grape head and slightly back. Insert the apricot halves.
  15. Repeat steps 10 to 14 with as many muffins as you wish to turn into turkeys.

Kelly Rowland names her baby boy after Saturn's moon

Just two day after news broke that Rowland and her husband Tim Weatherspoon welcomed their first child, Bey wasted no time in congratulating her Destiny's Child sister by sharing the very first glimpse of the baby boy with the blogosphere. On Thursday, Oct. 6, Bey took to Instagram to post a very special message for Rowland and her child. Admitting that there's "no better feeling" than holding her beautiful nephew, she thanked God for allowing her to witness Rowland's path to motherhood and even admitted that she's always dreamed of the day when her baby girl Blue Ivy would have a companion to grow up with.

Aside from the sweet words, the post included a professional black-and-white photo, which showed off Titan's tiny hands being held by a pair of adult hands, which we can only assume are Bey's hands. We can't blame Bey for getting so excited and posting the very first photo, though. We can only imagine how adorable Kelly's mini-me must be. At time of press, the photo had garnered more than 736,000 likes, so you know Rowland is just feeling all the love. Bey continued to support Rowland's monumental chapter with a second upload on Instagram. This time she chose a stunning photo of Rowland sporting a gorgeous maternity gown and cupping her pregnant belly.

Why I kept keepsakes after divorce

$

0

Divorce is complicated enough for adults to deal with, so I can imagine how confusing it can be for kids. Luckily, my ex-husband and I filed for divorce while we were pregnant and he completely disappeared out of our lives long before my son could miss that man. And while my son and I have since been blessed with a wonderful husband and father who makes our family whole, I still have photos and marriage keepsakes from our former life.

I'm not trying to dwell in the past or weep over memories of love lost. I'm way past that. I am completely in love with my husband, who has adopted my son and given me a beautiful daughter. And I don't really worry that my son feels there is anything missing from his life, but I still fear that in the future he may wonder about the biological father who left him behind.

So, in a box are keepsakes from my first marriage including wedding trinkets, my engagement ring and many photos that tell the story of the relationship that brought him into the world. I keep this box of memories for him so he never has to question whether he was made from love. But, I also secretly hope that he never asks.

Many people may say to toss all the marriage mementos after divorce and not to focus on the past. But I assure you, I never take a trip down memory lane or swoon over photos of the life that once was. I kept keepsakes after divorce strictly for my son. And I have the full support of my husband to do so.

But, regardless of what you think about my decision, it's something only you can decide for you and your children, advises Judith Orloff, M.D., psychiatrist and author of The Ecstasy of Surrender: 12 Surprising Ways Letting Go Can Empower Your Life. Dr. Orloff suggests keeping the treasure box private until the conversation with your child leads to an appropriate opening to mention the mementos, but cautions not to push it on your son or daughter.

Just go with your heart and let your child's needs guide you in the future. You can always toss those marriage keepsakes after divorce down the road when your kids are old enough to make decisions about whether they want to keep them. Until then the keepsakes will sit in a box and I'm confident about my decision.

McDonald's owns McRib Twitter hater by showing him how it's made (VIDEO)

McRib

McRib

So I, for one, am glad that McDonald's has posted a video that finally allows me to come out of the McRib closet. The fast-food giant launched a campaign last month, in which real customers are invited to ask questions and make comments about their food. One guy (cough, hater, cough) tweeted a photo of what was purported to be a frozen McRib, and McDonald's invited him to tour its factory. The point? To prove that the McRib actually is made of real meat. I, for one, didn’t need a video to convince me. I mean, the McRib has all the delicious, saucy taste of barbecue without the hassle of bones (who really likes tearing the meat from a rack of ribs, anyway, amirite?). Throw it onto a bun with the trademark onions and pickles, and dear God, we have what is the most perfect food ever.

So for all of you McRib virgins and haters out there, take a look at the video. For my fellow McRib lovers, it's time to shrug off the shroud of secrecy. Hold your heads and sauce-covered fingers high, my friends. We've finally got our moment.

Cara Delevingne's American accent needs a little help

The couple caused dating speculation when she took to Instagram on Thursday to post a picture of what appears to be O'Connell with his neck covered in love bites. The snap of the two large red love bites was also accompanied by a short, cryptic caption.

Cara Delevingne Instagram

Cara Delevingne Instagram

While this is not clear evidence that the pair are dating and O'Connell's face is not visible in the snaps, you can see what looks to be the two small moles on his neck. But according to E! News, a source confirmed the dating rumors, saying that the couple have been together for about a month and that "they're having fun."

So, who is Jack O'Connell? Well, we have everything you need to know.

1. He is British

Delevingne and O'Connell are both British stars, and the actor was born in Derby, England, on Aug. 1, 1990. That makes him 24 years old.

2. He hasn't made it really big in America — yet

O'Connell is no stranger to the showbiz world and has starred in several popular British shows, including the role of James Cook in teen drama Skins and This Is England. He's also been in Starred Up and 300: Rise of an Empire, among several other films. However, the gorgeous actor is about to come onto your radar in a big way.

3. He's starring in Angelina Jolie's directorial debut Unbroken

O'Connell is set for superstardom after Angelina Jolie's much-anticipated film Unbroken hits theaters on Christmas Day. He will be starring as the late Olympic track star and World War II veteran Louis Zamperini.

4. He previously dated an X Factor judge

Among O'Connell's ex-girlfriends is The X Factor judge Tulisa Contostavlos, whom he dated back in 2012. And he rocked her world!

5. He's also starring in a film with Delevingne

O'Connell is working on a film called Tulip Fever, set for release in 2015. He will star alongside Glee's Matthew Morrison, Zach Galifianakis and rumored new girlfriend Miss Delevingne.

Whoa! Are Michelle Rodriguez and Cara Delevingne hooking up?

And according to the Irish Independent, he has been singing the praise of his rumored flame.

"She knocked my socks off with the work that she did on that set," he revealed. "In fact, she helped me by turning up and just doing it. I'm excited for it, Tulip Fever. I think that's another integral piece of work that I look forward to seeing."

Tell us what you think. Do these two make a hot couple?

A live broadcast of A Few Good Men will not work and here's why

$

0

As a playwright, I'm the first to applaud theatre-television crossover events. NBC's live production of The Sound of Music starring Carrie Underwood was by no means perfect, but I loved how enthusiastic the company was about bringing a live theatrical event to viewers. With 22 million viewers tuning in to watch, the event was a huge success for NBC as well as a boon to theatres across the country who (let's be honest here) can always use a boost.

It's no surprise, then, that NBC immediately set to recreate the ratings magic with Peter Pan Live!, slated to air Thursday, Dec. 4. The upcoming event stars the ever-impressive (and multitalented) Christopher Walken as Captain Hook with Girls' Allison Williams playing Peter Pan. Between those tuning in with genuine enthusiasm for the musical and those tuning in just to hate-watch (not everyone loves the idea of a celebrity tackling iconic theatre roles. Just look at how some people railed against Underwood's performance), odds are good that NBC will land another ratings bonanza.

Is that you, Christopher Walken? Here's his first pic from Peter Pan Live!

So why oh why is NBC planning to deviate from the formula by producing a live broadcast of Aaron Sorkin's stage play of A Few Good Men?

Yes, you read that correctly... A Few Good Men.

The 1992 film adaptation has grossed over $140 million domestically, was nominated for a busload of awards and has become a staple repeat on cable television, but who wants to watch the live stage version in 2014? Our guess? Nobody. And here's why:

The cast

Jack Nicholson
GIF credit: Giphy

I'm sorry, but no one wants to see anyone besides Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson square off together in what is probably the most quoted courtroom scene of all time. "You can't handle the truth!" coming from anyone but Jack Nicholson's mouth is just plain wrong. Yes, the phrase has been parodied and quoted to death, and yes, I understand that Jack Nicholson doesn't "own" the role in the truest sense, but for millions of television viewers who have already seen the film, he does.

It's not a musical

Singing in the Rain
GIF credit: Giphy

Let's be honest: American audiences love to watch people sing and dance on TV. Television shows like American Idol, The Voice and Dancing With the Stars are all hugely popular, and putting a handful of celebrities on a sound stage with promises that we're going to see them sing and dance is completely in line with our zest for spectacle. Add in the factor that they're doing it live, and we get even more excited, anticipating those inevitable flubs.

A Few Good Dance Numbers

But A Few Good Men is not a musical, there aren't any big dance numbers, and the costumes are super boring. If television audiences want to watch a courtroom drama, they've already got a ton to choose from including Law and Order, The Good Wife, Boston Legal, and of course JAG.

Jack Nicholson crashes Jennifer Lawrence interview

A different audience

Bored Child
GIF credit: Giphy

If NBC is hoping to ride the wave of the (presumed) success of Peter Pan Live! into Sorkin Land, they're going to be sorely upset. The Sound of Music and Peter Pan are both family-friendly fare. A Few Good Men will bore the socks off young children, if they're even allowed to watch it. The play's subject matter and use of coarse language is probably too dark for many parents to feel comfortable letting their kids watch it at all.

Plays on TV are boring

Bored cat

I'm probably going to catch some flak for saying this, but stage plays on television are boring. That's why they get adapted into teleplays or screenplays. It's why Sorkin's stage play, A Few Good Men, was turned into a movie. When you walk into a theatre, you embrace the suspension of disbelief that is required to experience the transformation of live theatre. You can see the curtain, the lights, the strings... but you tell yourself it's OK because it's theatre. But when you sit down to watch something on TV (or on film), you want things to look really, really real. The musical form can distract us from the artificiality of staging something on film, but a straight character drama "live" is just... meh.

NBC and Sorkin are still in the planning stages for this live broadcast, but you can bet we'll be keeping our side-eyes on the negotiations.

Ellie Goulding posts photo, people call her racist, we roll our eyes

It's getting ridiculous and out of hand.

4 Celeb controversies this week that prove people are getting too sensitive

Now Ellie Goulding is under fire for a picture she posted near Halloween that shows her dressed in a stunning tribal headdress. She accompanied the image with the caption, "Chief."

The initial image was quickly removed from her account after being called "insensitive" and "racist." Goulding replaced it with a more close-up shot of the outfit in black and white.

Ellie Goulding Instagram Photo 2

Ellie Goulding Instagram Photo 2

"I wore that beautiful unauthentic headpiece for about 5 minutes," the singer responded on Nov. 1 to a Twitter user who commented on her controversial look. "I haven't worn my costume for Halloween yet."

Lena Dunham accused of being a molester, goes on a Twitter "rage spiral"

Why anyone would propose this gorgeous outfit is racist is completely beyond me. Because Goulding has lighter skin should she not be able to celebrate other cultures and pay respect by enjoying their icons?

If I wear a sari-inspired dress is that wrong? If I dress in a kimono is that incorrect? What if I wear a kilt?

I am of European heritage, mostly, but my family's history is rich and diverse. I don't identify with one culture in particular, as is the case with a lot of my peers these days. Yes, I have fair skin, but it doesn't begin to define what I wear or what cultures I choose to draw inspiration from when dressing myself, whether it be Halloween or on a daily basis. To say that I don't have the right to wear a certain garment simply because of the color of my skin is unacceptable and doesn't constitute a socially acceptable standard of the way we should view human beings.

Furthermore, these beautiful and iconic pieces of history and culture deserve to be celebrated and displayed by anyone and everyone who wants to pay homage to our ancestors, no matter if they're in your direct bloodline or not.

Rob Lowe is now hated by "shy bladder sufferers"... wait, what? (VIDEO)

Aside from that, to me, racism has a lot to do with intent. Goulding was not in any way, shape or form trying to maliciously put down anyone of any sort of ethnicity. She put on a headdress, felt like she was looking good in it and wanted to share. If she had meant to hurt feelings and cause distress that would be a different story. Nor can you claim she was ignorant of harm. How could she have anticipated that by donning that headdress people would accuse her of being racist, as though she didn't have the right to wear it?

I understand that racism is a serious and sensitive issue, and it is something we should be aware of. But between this situation and all the other controversies that have arisen this week, it's really starting to feel like people are getting offended just to make a stir. Don't be a victim. And don't make criminals out of people who don't deserve it.

Whoever made that headdress created it to be shown off and displayed. Goulding seems like the perfect model to me. She looks stunning. And I think she should post as many photos as she likes.

Do you think people are becoming overly sensitive?

Robin Williams' official cause of death revealed

Why Robin Williams was a significant part of my life

The big news is that no illegal drugs and no alcohol were found in Williams' body. His death was officially ruled a suicide. It was determined that Williams died from asphyxia due to hanging.

According to the Huffington Post, Sheriff's Deputy Stewart Cowan said that no other information from the report would be released.

Though his family and friends insisted that Williams was not abusing any substances at the time of his death, it was still an unanswered question until now, given the actor's history with illegal drugs.

20 Lessons Robin Williams taught us about life and love

Williams famously struggled with a cocaine addiction in the late '70s and early '80s. He then fell into abusing alcohol in 2003, which ended with him checking into rehab in 2006. Though Williams had checked himself into a rehab facility shortly before his death in 2014, his family and friends said it was not due to drug abuse. They explained that the actor simply needed time to regroup.

But we can now confirm addiction did not play a role in his death. Instead, Williams' wife Susan Schneider said publicly that at the time of his death, the comedian was struggling with depression, anxiety and the newly discovered information that he had Parkinson's disease.

Williams' personal assistant found him dead in his Northern California home on Aug. 11.

Robin Williams’ 5 best TV appearances before The Crazy Ones

The toxicology report from Williams' autopsy was initially scheduled to be released Sept. 20, approximately six weeks after his death, which is typical. The results were then delayed to Nov. 3 and further delayed until their official release today. The reasons for the delays were not immediately known.

Jared Leto eyed as the next big super villain

Jimmy Fallon trims Jared Leto's bush (VIDEO)

According to The Wrap, who first reported on the news, a source close to the film said Ryan Gosling was initially sought to play the Joker but wasn't willing to sign a contract for multiple movies (most likely due to scheduling conflicts). When that deal fell through, Warner Bros. set its sights on Leto.

The film is set to be directed by David Ayers. Tom Hardy, Will Smith and Margot Robbie are also rumored to be in negations for starring roles in the film. Jesse Eisenberg is expected to reprise his role as Lex Luthor, also according to The Wrap, though the outlet made sure to add that no casting announcements have been made official at this time.

The iconic character of the Joker most recently won Heath Ledger a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in The Dark Knight. Ledger took on the character not long before his death in 2008.

Jared Leto calls Ukraine fight "something really beautiful"

Suicide Squad is expected to be a different kind of superhero film than we've ever seen. It is based on the DC comic of the same name and finds the government granting a group of super villains a second chance if they take on a risky mission.

If Leto does take on the role, it will be his first film since Dallas Buyers Club, which won the actor an Oscar at the beginning of this year. With his band 30 Seconds to Mars and a successful, longstanding movie career under his belt, Leto is known for being picky about the films he joins, though it does look like either way we'll see the actor on the silver screen again in the very near future.

Jared Leto & Lupita Nyong'o add fuel to romance rumors

The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Leto recently and the actor did say he was already eyeing a specific role for his next project. Though saying he was sworn to keep his mouth shut, Leto did tease that "very shortly there will be something to talk about, that's for sure."

Could Suicide Squad be the project he meant?

"I was scared to tell her that this didn't happen or this job didn't go through or that didn't happen, because when I would say something was going on, it was hard because of the way she would go off on me, and I just got to where I could close up," he said.

The camera then cuts to two years ago, when Baskett is visibly excited to tell his wife about his dream of becoming a host. With only a few words, Wilkinson reduces Baskett's dream to rubble.

Of course, Wilkinson didn't have the benefit of taking that revealing walk down memory lane. In the now, she's livid.

"That's interesting that he said that, because he's still not telling me what happened. He's not giving me any answers," she shouted. "Why the f*** would you agree to having a baby if you're f***ing lost in your head?"

Yikes.

Emotional baggage

Wilkinson insists she is just an honest person, but the therapist points out that Baskett may be holding back out of fear for how Wilkinson might respond.

And, to play devil's advocate, Wilkinson doesn't really seem to be listening to anything Baskett has to say.

When he talks about how he has been struggling since leaving the NFL, Wilkinson inwardly laments the loss of the confident, strong man she married. Even when he starts to open up, saying, "I'm just trying to find a way to be able to tell her that the way things are said is not what happened," Wilkinson cuts him off.

Kendra on Top: Hank admits he did something wrong — sort of

Might she have been a bit more empathetic had the cameras not been rolling? SheKnows Dating and Relationship Expert Andrea Syrtash says it is possible, but not likely in their specific case.

"People do behave differently when cameras are rolling," she said. "However, when cameras are rolling to the extent that they are on this kind of show — 24/7 — people inevitably let their guards down."

Plus, there actually is some truth to Baskett's talk of becoming closed off over time. "If your partner senses a lack of support or that he will be judged when he's honest, communication generally breaks down," said Syrtash.

"In my research, I've found that the top reason men cheat is because they feel a lack of approval at home. This doesn't excuse cheating, of course, but it shows how necessary attention, approval and acceptance are in a relationship."

And, in all likelihood, Wilkinson is bringing her own baggage into the marriage due to lingering doubts about her absentee father.

Her sudden trip to make amends with her dad, it would seem, could ultimately be good for her relationship with Baskett, too.

"People like Kendra who are generally non-confrontational or who haven't worked through their own family issues from the past will face problems in their relationships since an issue that isn't confronted will manifest and become larger," Syrtash said.

An unexpected sojourn

Wilkinson does trust Baskett enough to leave the kids with him, which SheKnows Parenting Expert Vera Sweeney says is important.

"I am a firm believer that children need to spend equal time with their parents. Society expects the mother to do the majority of the nurturing and raising, but Dad should have some time to shine alone without any assistance," Sweeney said.

Kendra on Top: Are Hank's tears real or is he manipulating her?

"If Kendra felt like she needed to be with her estranged father, then lucky for Little Hank, there was another parent to hold his hand. As a working mother, sometimes I feel the pull of my little children," Sweeney said. "They don't understand my need to leave the house and take care of my responsibilities. But at the same time, they get to have experiences that they wouldn't have had if I was home. It's part of their growing process and it strengthens their relationship with their father."

And so off Wilkinson goes to Costa Rica to meet her long-lost dad... and is greeted at her hotel by its hunky owner, Federico.

When Wilkinson calls Costa Rica an "untouched piece of heaven," we totally catch her drift.

Impressively, though, Wilkinson isn't deterred. Although she does mention to Hall how cute Federico is, she doesn't dwell on it nearly as long as we would have, which suggests she really is still very much in love with her husband.

Daddy's girl

Kendra On Top

The remainder of the episode is devoted to Wilkinson's emotional reunion with her father, Eric.

They both seem legitimately nervous and overjoyed at once. Surely even the haters can thaw their hearts for a hot second and appreciate the courage it took for Wilkinson to reach out to the man who — as far as she knows — abandoned her as a child.

Besides, it's cute how much the two seem to have in common.

"I have found my twin," gushed Wilkinson. "We're the same — he's a free spirit. He's just like me. I am my dad's daughter."

As the episode nears its close, Eric offers Wilkinson a little fatherly advice.

"Any decision that you make right now is going to affect you, your family, your children for the rest of your lives. You know, maybe what you need to do is try to find a way to give it a good shot and work your way through it, and from there make your decision when all the data's in," he said.

Kendra Wilkinson finally tells us the truth about the cheating scandal

When Eric cops to having made "a hell of a lot of mistakes" in his life, it placates Wilkinson.

As the sun sets in Costa Rica, she and her father sit on the deck drinking beers and pondering the possibility of bringing Big Hank, Little Hank and baby Alijah out for a visit.

Should Kendra bring Hank and the kids to Costa Rica to meet her father? Or is it too much, too soon? Check out this sneak peek from next week and let us know!

5 Promising shows that have already been canceled this fall

INTERVIEWS: Red Band Society crew promises rivalries, hookups and soapy goodness

OK, maybe that's a bit dramatic, but this year there were a handful of shows that had quite a bit of potential yet didn't really make the grade.

Here's a look at some of the programs that we were pulling for that didn't make it past the chopping block.

1. Selfie

Despite the fact that this ABC sitcom got people talking about its commentary and critique on the culture of modern-day social media, this show just could not get high enough ratings in its Tuesday night slot to move forward.

2. Bad Judge

With Kate Walsh anchoring this NBC comedic courtroom sitcom, it seemed to be a shoo-in to see another season. Walsh has certainly created a fan base for herself with her character Addison Montgomery in Grey's Anatomy and her spin-off, Private Practice, but the network pulled the plug.

3. A to Z

A to Z stars Cristin Milioti and Ben Feldman seemed to have great chemistry in the promos for the NBC romantic comedy. We loved her in How I Met Your Mother and him in Mad Men. The two certainly have acting chops and were great in the shows mentioned, but perhaps audiences weren't quite ready to see them carrying their own series yet.

4. Manhattan Love Story

ABC's Manhattan Love Story had a cute premise and sought to comedically highlight the inner thoughts of men and women as they navigate through modern dating. It takes place in New York, though, and it's possible that people are a bit tired of watching singles trying to make it work in the Big City. The show's ratings never really got off the ground.

5. Utopia

All right, we admit that the cancellation of Utopia was no big shocker. It was painful to watch the couple of minutes we were able to sit through, and longtime running reality TV favorite Survivor is barely keeping our interest piqued at this point. It's no surprise audiences weren't buying this show.

Beyoncé shared this sweet photo on her Instagram of what appears to be her hand holding onto the fingers of Kelly Rowland's newborn son, Titan Jewell Witherspoon.

"There's no better feeling than holding my beautiful nephew," she captioned the photo. "I thank God for the honor of witnessing my sister's journey into motherhood. I've always dreamt of our little ones growing up together. I'm so thankful for our bond," she wrote, referring to her own daughter Blue Ivy.

Rowland, who named her son Titan after one of Saturn's moons, welcomed her first child this week with her husband, Tim Witherspoon. "Titan was born at 1:30 pm [PT] and weighed 7.5 lbs. We are blessed to report everyone is healthy and happy!" Rowland announced in a statement.

Pregnant Blake Lively showed off her chic maternity style in this photo that was posted on the Instagram page of her lifestyle website, Preserve. The actress, who is expecting her first child with Ryan Reynolds, has loved dressing her new pregnancy curves in bold prints and bright colors.

Lively looks ready for winter in a Lindsey Thornburg Reverse Raven Trench Cloak, which just happens to be available on her website for the hefty price of $1,350. Hey, at least you could wear it long after you are no longer pregnant. She pairs the trench with black skinny pants and black boots.

It looks like Mariah Carey was getting an early start on Christmas shopping as she posted this photo of her standing in a toy store next to a toy soldier as her daughter Monroe held a toy doll in her hand.

Carey, who is separated from her husband of eight years, Nick Cannon, posted another sweet shot with Moroccan and Monroe as they cuddled with Edmond the Koala Bear at the Cleland Wildlife Park in Australia.

Robert Downey Jr.

Yes, we are aware he is not a celebrity mom, but we had to include Robert Downey Jr. in our list of buzzworthy celebrity moms (and dads) because he welcomed a daughter and gave her the sweetest name.

RDJ

RDJ

The name Avri is pronounced like Avery, while the middle name Roel is a combination of a Downey's father and his wife (Robert Downey Sr. and Rosemary), and his mother (Elsie) and his wife's father (Eliot). Very clever — although we could expect nothing less from Ironman.

Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson posted a picture of her mini-me daughter, Maxwell, as she tried on mama's lip gloss. With her blond hair and blue eyes, she is the spitting image of Simpson. "I need to move my lipgloss drawer! My favorites always get taken by this 2yr old!" she captioned the photo.

Simpson posted another picture of Maxwell, with the caption "Someone got into Mommy’s lip gloss. #poser."

One commenter, however, didn't believe that the toddler was able to apply her lip gloss with that much precision on her own.

"Steals her lipgloss. Really? All on her own? Has anyone else ever seen a toddler put that much lipstick on without it getting all over their face?" wrote one of Simpson's Instagram followers.

Well, maybe she had a little help from mom.

Jerry Seinfeld’s self-diagnosis is a hallelujah moment for autistic adults

$

As Seinfeld has learned more about autism over the years, as we all have, he was able to identify markers that lead him to the conclusion that he may be autistic.

"Basic social engagement is really a struggle. I'm very literal, when people talk to me and they use expressions, sometimes I don't know what they're saying," he said. "But I don't see it as dysfunctional, I just think of it as an alternate mindset."

I’m not surprised that Jerry Seinfeld could be on the autism spectrum. He was born in 1954 when doctors were convinced that autism was a subset of schizophrenia, a misdiagnosis until the 1960s. The 1970s brought a bit more clarity steering researchers towards the idea that autism was its own, separate, unrelated disorder, yet, despite this clarity, treatments in the 1970s bordered on barbaric. LSD, electro shock therapy and a wide variety of medications were used to treat this misunderstood developmental issue. Unless young Jerry was exhibiting behaviors that were wildly out of the norm-even for him-there was no chance that his parents would have sought out a diagnosis, let alone treatment. His was likely mild enough that his family could have thought, “well, that’s just Jerry.” An important observation on their part (in my imagined Seinfeld home in Brooklyn, circa 1960), since many adults with autism are, indeed, high functioning.

A pivotal paper published in 1997 by Cambridge University investigated high functioning adults diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and concluded that in some ways (short term memory, for example), autistic adults and non-autistic adults are indistinguishable. The difference between those adults and Mr. Seinfeld is that they had been diagnosed. That is a key distinction since anecdotal evidence shows that many people with autism view a diagnosis as a relief. They finally have an explanation for why they are incredibly adept at some things while other tasks or social interactions are inexplicably difficult. Over the years Mr. Seinfeld may have suffered through countless relationship difficulties without knowing why therefore, this latest revelation could be of some comfort to him and his family.

Autism advocates are applauding Jerry Seinfeld’s courage and his candor for coming forward and discussing this highly talked about disorder, and I am with them. The stigma surrounding autism for adults is limited to Dustin Hoffman’s role in Rain Man. Sure, he can count like amazing, but he was a low functioning individual who didn’t seem destined or deserving of the success and joy we all are entitled to. Rain Man painted a sweet but bleak picture of adults with autism and while it certainly did accurately reflect a portion of the population with Autism Spectrum Disorder, it left most of America with the idea that all adult autism looks like that.

Jerry Seinfeld saying, “I’m on the spectrum” is such a hallelujah moment for adults living with autism, as well as their families, who are apprehensive about revealing their diagnosis to those around them. Perhaps this will open a dialogue in unexpected ways.

How to use flowers as a natural alternative to tie-dying fabric

$

Nature provides us with a ready palette of lovely colors. Throughout history, plants and vegetables were used to dye fabrics. There are several ways to extract the color from plants in order to add color to a piece of fabric. Steam dyeing is a quick and simple way to add a splash of color to fabric.

Supply list:

  • A piece of natural fiber fabric (cotton, silk or wool)
  • Fresh or Dried Flowers (rose petals, hibiscus, golden rod, pansies)
  • Rubber bands
  • Large pot with with a steamer rack

Natural fibers take color better than synthetic fibers. Silk or wool dye better than cotton. In this tutorial I used cotton flour sack towels. Before you begin, it’s better if you wash the fabric first. This will help remove any residual chemicals or dirt from the fabric help it absorb the dye better. You can also use a fabric fixative. You can make a fixative by mixing 4 parts water to one part vinegar prior to dyeing. Any type of flowers will stain the fabric during steaming. Try a combination of petals and leaves. Flowers that are already dried will work as well.

  • Lay the fabric flat.
  • Sprinkle the flowers and/orl leaves all over the fabric. You can leave more or less space if you want.
  • Fold the fabric over the petals, Do a section at a time to make sure that you care getting a layer of petals in each fold.
  • Bind the ends with rubber bands. Add a rubber band in the middle to secure the bundle.
  • Set the flower bundles on a steamer rack in a pot of water. Place on a burner and set to a low heat.
  • Let the bundles steam for about an hour. Periodically check to make sure the pot has an ample amount of water.
  • After an hour, turn off the heat and allow the bundles to cool.
  • Once cooled, remove the bundles and unroll. Remove the flowers. Don’t get too excited at this point. The colors look vivid right now, but they will dry lighter.
  • Give a quick rinse in cool water. Hang to dry. The colors will dry significantly lighter.

Use these eco-dyed fabrics for decorative purposes. Since I used cotton with no fixative, the colors will eventually fade. I use these flour sack towels to wrap bundles of bread or a small tablecloth. Try experimenting with other types of plant materials and with silk or wool.

Dear furniture stores: Your catalogs don't look like real life

The rooms aren't the same size

Photo credits: West Elm Tillary Collection / baddiejey0 via Instagram

Showrooms are staged to look perfect and awesome, but homes in real life come with quirky angles, ridiculous layouts and built-in features that can't easily be changed. So while you may have fallen in love with that sofa you saw in the catalog, check the measurements. It might be too big (or too small) for your space.

It doesn't go with what we have

Photo credits: Urban Outfitters / Mlem06 via Instagram

Naturally, if we all had infinite budgets and could buy everything we see in the store, our homes would look just as amazing as in the catalog. But in reality, our decor is pieced together bit by bit as the budget allows. This is why choosing the right items — pieces that will last and that you'll love for a long time — is important. Additionally, having a color scheme in mind will help guide your choices as you bring in new items over time.

They don't have children, do they?

Photo credits: Z Gallerie / Laurenmcollins_ via Instagram

Seriously, all that chrome, those sharp, pointy edges and that glass have got to go! There's no way a room like this catalog piece would work in real life, even if you don't have a toddler.

Who do they think we are? Martha Stewart?

Photo credits: Crate & Barrel yumcrispypata via Instagram

I can't remember the last time I left my loafers perfectly placed at the foot of the bed and prepped a water tray for when I get thirsty. There's only one person I know of who lives this way, and her name rhymes with Cartha Newart.

The hipster home decor essentials

We're just not that hard to please

Photo credit: Restoration Hardware / randidawn via Instagram

It's all overkill, don't you think? I mean, are the people you invite into your home really going to judge you if your curtains don't match or if you're serving dinner on paper plates? OK, maybe some will, but what truly matters is how you feel in your home. If you feel comfortable and happy with your decor, then consider yourself right on trend.
