4 Reasons Manhattan Love Story shouldn't have been cancelled

Dancing With the Stars offers up eclectic cast for Season 19

ABC definitely should have given this show more of a chance. Of course, networks see the ratings and cancel from there. Instead of trying to expend the effort to bolster a show's ratings, they just ship it to the chopping block. Such is the case for Manhattan Love Story — but here's why we think the network should have given this hidden gem more of a chance.

1. It's relatable

I'm a 20-something dating in Los Angeles, and let me tell you: It sucks. Manhattan Love Story felt my pain. It didn't sugarcoat the beginnings of romance. Instead, it opted to glorify all its awkwardness. And that isn't something we should brush under the rug because, like the show told us so perfectly in the last episode, those awkward moments are often the ones that bring new couples closer the quickest.

3 People who make Death Comes to Pemberley worth watching

2. It's clever

The inner monologues between the characters are spot on. Of course, I can't speak for my male counterparts, but I find Dana's thoughts to be hilariously accurate.

3. It embraced the New Adult popularity

I love that we're seeing an influx of television and books for people in their 20s. Publishers and producers used to be unsure how to breach this age group in television. It was either for kids or for families. Everything else was kind of confusing. Luckily, we live in a generation where all those barriers are falling away, and Manhattan Love Story is one of these "edge" shows because it embraces a nontraditional audience.

4. It's unpredictable

Each week I have no idea if Peter and Dana are going to have sex or break up, and I love that (see No. 1). New relationships are volatile. And though these two like each other, we have no idea where it's heading. Of course, the show is called Manhattan Love Story, but is that because Dana is falling in love with the city? Or is it because she's falling in love with Peter? We don't know yet, but hopefully we will find out before ABC pulls the plug on these brilliant episodes.

Are you sad Manhattan Love Story has been cancelled?

Benedict Cumberbatch attempts the Beyoncé walk (VIDEO)

Cumberbatch proved this perfectly when he showed off his sassiest walk during an interview on The Graham Norton Show, and we're loving it.

TRAILER: Benedict Cumberbatch is an enigma in The Imitation Game

English comedian Miranda Hart was also on the show. One of the things she's known for is her sketch on walks and the different styles of walking she's observed in life. (Catch where this is going?)

"I think the king of all walks is when you walk purposefully in one direction," Hart explained, "and you immediately realize you're going in the wrong direction, but you can't suddenly turn around because that would look really odd. And we've all felt that, and we all turn into something."

Hart graciously and beautifully demonstrates.

But, of course, Norton also calls out Hart for her ultimate walk, aka the pop star walk.

Who's hotter: Benedict Cumberbatch vs. Tom Hardy

"So you have to be very careful," Hart admitted, "because it's sort of a one foot in front of the other walk."

Hart demonstrated that the walk is easily done wrong and looks like you're, "scratching an awkward itch."

And she's so right!

After Hart is done, the big finale arrives: It's Cumberbatch's turn. He struts across the stage, and we have to give him props because it doesn't look like he's "scratching an awkward itch." But it does look like he's stepping over some kind of horrible bear trap with the way his legs flail. Quickly, his awkward strut turns into an awkward dance move as he sways and pumps to "Crazy in Love" playing in the background.

SK Confessional: I'm obsessed with Benedict Cumberbatch and here's why

"Like that?" the actor asks, making his way around the stage.

Yup, perfect.

Watch the segment from Cumberbatch's interview below and let us know what you think of his Beyoncé walk.

8 Facts you didn't know about Oscar de la Renta

Bruce's family revealed the sad news on Facebook Saturday morning, saying, "It is with great sadness that we, Jack's family, announce the passing of our beloved Jack: husband, father, granddad, and all round legend. The world of music will be a poorer place without him, but he lived on in his music and forever in our hearts."

Bruce was best known for being a member of Cream, what most people consider the original rock supergroup, in the '60s. Eric Clapton played guitar for the band, and Ginger Baker was the drummer. They were known for the hits "I Feel Free" and "Sunshine of Your Love," among others.

5 Reasons why Iggy Azalea's 'Beg For It' is our new anthem

Iggy Azalea in another Twitter feud?

Shhhhhhhhoot. We had the best of intentions of staying in this weekend, devouring pumpkin spice everything and watching Gilmore Girls on Netflix. Azalea is ruining all of our laid-back plans, though, in favor of something much more fun: time dancing with the girls. We're putting on our spandex and glitter, adding a few more layers of mascara and hitting the club. So what if we're 30? We want to live in this track all weekend.

Need proof that "Beg For It" is meant for girl time and promotes girl power? Just take a closer look at the lyrics.

Iggy freaks out on the papz

"Pulled up looking picture perfect, baby
High price, but I'm worth it, baby"

There's hitting the bar in this afternoon's jeans but a fresh shirt. Then there's rolling up in a brand-new too-short dress. In one instance, we're happy for a dude willing to buy us a Stella. Tonight, though, don't even look at us unless you've got bottle service.

"I know you like the way I turn it on
I'm out here with my friends
Imma make you beg, Imma make you beg for it"

Is there anything more satisfying than standing in a circle with your friends and dancing your asses off? The dance floor is full of judging girls and obnoxious drunks. But your forcefield of friendship in impenetrable.

"P-p-p**** power"

This. This might be the ultimate modern update to the somewhat tired and overplayed "Girl Power." And when we hear it, all we can think is...

Powerpuff Girls

GIF credit: Giphy.com

"You can look, boy, but don’t you touch
If you want my love, make me give a f***
Make you beg for it, Imma make you beg for it"

OK, OK. We get it. Sex is a two-way street. We want it just as bad as most dudes do, so holding out only makes us wait for it, too. Still. Sometimes we need a dude who will work for it. We need to feel like we're worth the effort. And, more importantly, we need to know the guy is worth our time.

"Iggy, Iggy, Iggy, Can't you see?"

What?! Was that a Nortorious B.I.G. reference? Oh, yes it was! Hello, again, sixth grade. It's been so long.

Doctor Who: All the feels felt during Peter Capaldi's first season

$

0

We've always known that the Doctor was old. Very old. However, during Doctor Who's most recent run, he's been portrayed by much younger men. Eccleston was my first Doctor — the one everyone says will always be your favorite. He looked too much like an ex-boyfriend, though. When Tennant came along, I fell fast and hard. Then, despite what friends told me, I was in no way, shape or form prepared for his regeneration into Matt Smith's version of the Doctor. He was so young. His hair was too floppy. He was too goofy. That first episode was good, and he was absolutely brilliant with young Amelia. But it still took a few episodes to fully pull me in. And then it happened. I was hooked.

And then it was time for a new Doctor. I was a bundle of mixed emotions. So far, I had yet to be let down. But how long could that last? Then again, it was hard to see Smith's Doctor with anyone other than the Ponds. Clara and Eleven weren't doing anything for me. Something had to change. As an American girl, I knew nothing about Capaldi when they announced him as the new Doctor. So I was still uneasy. It's been a wild ride, but it turns out getting used to Capaldi was easier than I thought... despite all the feels along the way. Wanna follow me through the phases?

Phase 1: Oh, look! He's in the 50th Anniversary Special

Doctor

GIF credit: Giphy.com

The first flash of those eyes was a lot to handle. On the one hand, it was a reminder that we'd reached the end of Matt Smith's time. On the other, it was pretty cool to see him for just a split second, breaking the timey-wimey time travel rules to help out.

Phase 2: God, no! It can't be time to regenerate already!

Doctor

GIF credit: Giphy.com

It felt so sudden! Despite the months of notice I had, the regeneration felt too soon. I didn't get enough time to say good-bye. Things weren't ending like they should. I wasn't ready for this old man.

Phase 3: "Attack eyebrows," huh? That's pretty funny

Doctor

GIF credit: Giphy.com

That first episode, though. There were so many amazing jokes. So many great lines. It's as if Moffat knew we weren't properly ready for Capaldi's premiere and decided to help us out with witty banter. "These are attack eyebrows! You can take bottle tops off with these!" might just be the best line of the season.

Phase 4: Recognizing the Doctor's internal struggle

Doctor

GIF credit: Giphy.com

"Clara, be my pal and tell me: Am I a good man?" With just one question, I fell for the Doctor. Not so much in love, but in a best friend sort of way. I wanted to be his friend... to help him answer the blasted question that was plaguing him.

Phase 4: Oh, really? You hate soldiers? Screw you!

Doctor

GIF credit: Giphy.com

"I think you're probably nice. Underneath it all, I think you're kind and definitely brave. I just wish you hadn't been a soldier," the Doctor explained to Danny. It was like the biggest hill on the roller coaster for me. After weeks of building Capaldi's Doctor up so high, I came plummeting back down. Sure, I knew the Doctor had never liked guns. He'd always been a little cold and distrusting of soldiers. He seemed to truly detest Danny, though, and it was a lot to swallow. And, yes, for a few minutes, I had a hard time separating the actor from the Doctor. It was a rough episode, OK? Don't hate.

Phase 5: He's being protective? That's cute

Doctor

GIF credit: Giphy.com

The Doctor might still hate Danny, but he's swallowing down those feels. Like Danny figured out, it didn't matter if he's good enough for the Doctor, he need only be good enough for Clara. Most of the Doctor's saltiness is only because he's looking out for his friend.

Phase 6: What's next? How much longer must I wait?

Doctor

GIF credit: Giphy.com

All right. We know it's coming: The Doctor is slowly pushing Clara toward Danny. She will eventually do the opposite of what Rose did and choose her human over her Time Lord. While I've certainly shed tears at the loss of past companions, this one can't come soon enough. Capaldi has redeemed himself, but the Clara/Twelve team is still not enough. I'm ready for more.

How much longer must I wait?

Slow Cooker Sunday: Middle Eastern-inspired lamb stew for a cozy meal

$
0
0

This is hands down one of my new favorite fall recipes. It's as comforting as your favorite stew but has so much more flavor than the stuff you grew up on (that is, unless you grew up eating this — in that case, lucky!).

Lamb stew

Slow cooker Emirati lamb stew recipe

Adapted from Saveur Magazine

If you can't find bzar seasoning, which is a Middle Eastern spice, then use your favorite exotic seasoning blend (za'atar works great too).

Serves 4-6

Prep time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 8 hours | Total time: 8 hours 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2-1/2 pounds prime-quality lamb shoulder, trimmed and cut into pieces
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2 large carrots, chopped
  • 5 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 2 small zucchini, sliced
  • 1/2 head cauliflower, cut into florets
  • 1 can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 2-1/2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 can chickpeas, drained
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoons bzar seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 4 cups cooked rice
  • Fresh basil, for garnish

Directions:

  1. Liberally salt and pepper the lamb. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat the olive oil. Add the lamb, and cook until just browned on each side, about 3 to 6 minutes.
  2. To the slow cooker, add all the ingredients (except the rice and basil), and mix.
  3. Turn on low, and cook for about 8 hours or until the lamb is fork tender.
  4. To serve, pour the stew over the rice, and garnish with fresh basil.

Will Hayden arrested for allegedly molesting a child

TMZ reports that Stephanie Hayden and Kris Ford were arrested Friday in Louisiana for allegedly beating a 9-year-old boy.

The report says Kris beat the boy, Stephanie's son, so hard with a belt that it left bruises. According to TMZ, Parish of Livingston officials are saying the boy was Stephanie's son from a previous relationship and the incident happened last month. Kris is accused of hitting the boy on his lower buttocks area.

TMZ also reports that Stephanie was taken into custody but is not accused of hitting the boy. Reports say the boy told police his mom was in the same room at the time of the beating but she didn't participate.

Sons of Guns' Will Hayden hit with another rape charge

Stephanie's dad, Will Hayden, was taken into custody in August for allegedly molesting his other daughter. At the time, Stephanie told police, "There was never any impropriety in our home. He was and is a good father." Will claimed his ex-girlfriend accused him of molestation as retaliation for their breakup.

But in the time since then, Stephanie has changed her story and accused her father of sexually abusing her, too. After Stephanie said she would meet with investigators to recount the abuse she allegedly suffered when she was young, Kris posted a poem on Facebook, seemingly directed toward Will, that read, in part, "I dare you to say my wife is a liar."

Stephanie commented that she had given her husband permission to post the poem, but both posts were later removed. An attorney for Will told TMZ, "Her complaints arose only after her income from the show and [gun] shop stopped. She's still Will's daughter, and he loves her."

Will Hayden's daughter makes shocking revelation to Dr. Phil

Sons of Guns was canceled in August.

ARIES (March 20-April 18)

This is a good week to review accounts. You’ll like what you see on Tuesday when numbers show that you’re getting a wonderful return on your investment dollars. You have the Sun/Neptune trine to thank because trines often bring good luck and fortune. In your case, the “fortune” will be literal because Neptune is the planet of revenue streams in astrology. When Neptune’s powerful, then you will see your coffers fill and your cash flow "flow." But just because you’re in the money doesn’t mean others are as well. Beware of people reneging on their debts on Oct. 30.

TAURUS (April 19-May 19)

Last week was probably the most challenging time of the year for you; however, adversity introduces you to strengths you never thought you had. Now that you’re through the worst of it, you should have no problem figuring out where to go from here. It’s becoming abundantly clear that some kind of major move, upheaval or alteration in your lifestyle is in the works, and it would be a good idea to start planning for it. You want to take the lead with changes like this and not have to race to catch up to them.

It looks like you’ll happen upon a solution to an ongoing health matter this week. It won’t be what you expect. In fact, your first reaction may be to turn the magazine page or click to the next link. Nevertheless, there’s something about this alternative remedy that says something to you and you’ll want to try it out. There’s no harm in exploring. You’ll also be making a breakthrough at work on Oct. 30. Maybe the message sunk in or you finally recognized the constructive criticism for what it is. In any case, your performance will improve.

The Venus/Neptune trine on Monday followed by the Sun/Neptune trine on Tuesday brings good news pertaining to a creative venture or heartfelt endeavor. Indeed, given the double bump you could see the initial pledge on the first day followed by an increase in funds or a sweetening of the terms on the second. In any case, this is the green light you’ve been looking for, and it will surely make you feel confident about yourself and what you’re doing. You are now in a position to showcase your talents and abilities for all the world to see.

LEO (July 22-Aug. 21)

Things are wrapping up — whether you want them to or not — between Oct. 30 and Nov. 18. Expect to sign off on unfinished business, sales, projects and relationships. It’s funny how you can have something in mind, a vision for the way you always saw life playing out, and then suddenly you’re dealing with the messy reality. There isn’t enough time for this, circumstances won’t permit that, etc. You’ll be flying by the seat of your pants, but afterward you’ll discover that it all comes together in the way that you hoped it would all along.

People born under Virgo have often been called the landlocked builders of ships. You can create the vessels that will carry others to distant shores where they can pursue their dreams, while you remain squarely in place. Thankfully, this is changing. It’s time to put aside your role as teacher or coach and to become that artist or healer you’ve always wanted to be. Let yourself benefit from the same means that you’ve made available to everyone else, and you’ll fulfill your hopes and ambitions. If you can do it for them, you can do it for you.

It’s time to put everything out on the table with a coworker or supervisor. Simply put, one of you screwed up big time, but it’s useless to play the blame game because the only way to escape this tight corner that you find yourselves in is by working together. Thankfully, the profusion of Neptunian energy this week will allow both of you to put aside your frustrated expectations and disappointments and to discuss figures rather than feelings in an objective yet sensitive way. Thursday is the perfect day to collaborate and to draw up a financial plan.

Thursday would be the ideal day to take stock of where you are vis-à-vis future plans and to map out what you would like to achieve over the next three weeks. You have a lot going for you in terms of contacts, resources, imagination and ingenuity. Your only problem is that you may be taking some of these things for granted and, therefore, not maximizing their potential. But ask yourself, what would happen if you stopped trying to paddle free and let yourself float along the current of events? Every ending brings a fresh start, as you’ll see on Thursday. But this is more than just a new list of chores replacing that old to-do list. You’re being given an opportunity to build on the accomplishments of the past two years. You can take what you’ve done and make it bigger and better. The question is: Is this what you see for yourself? The difficulty with being born under the zodiac sign of the rebel is that you don’t always recognize when the fight for freedom is over and when the exercising of freedom has begun.

Put your imagination to work, and you will discover ways to swim under and/or around the barrier that stands between you and where you want to go. This only goes to show that limitations — as most people define them — are just a land mass thing.

ARIES (March 20-April 18)

Did anyone ever tell you that you make love like a man? This isn't necessarily a physical thing — although it could be given the popularity of toys and role playing. It's more of an emotional thing. It stems from the fact that you were born under Mars which means that once the lovemaking's over, you're out of bed and on to the next thing. This week's planetary transits encourage you to stay in bed a little longer with him so that you can cuddle together and drink in that quiet time. This will do a lot to deepen your bond.

TAURUS (April 19-May 19)

Everyone likes the guy you're seeing and they think that you're the luckiest person on the planet. He's great looking, makes a good salary, helps old ladies cross the street and rescues cats from trees. So why does this leave you feeling unmoved? The simple answer is that you suffered a lot of heartbreak these past two years and you're probably still shell-shocked. It's going to take a while longer to lower your guard and learn to trust again. What's nice is that he's not going anywhere and wants to prove that he's not like the rest.

GEMINI (May 20-June 19)

You know that guy you blew off because you were totally infatuated with somebody else? Well, it looks like he's still available. Naturally you'll be reluctant to open the lines of communication. It's hard to admit that you were wrong. Don't let pride get in the way of something that could make you happy. A wonderful Mercury/Jupiter sextile on Nov. 1 gives you a rare chance to go back and take the path you should have taken the first time around. Not only will he be good-humored about it, but he'll be really glad to see you.

CANCER (June 20-July 21)

It's hard to tell if things are improving in your relationship or if you're getting used to having lower expectations. The truth lies somewhere in between. Trines and sextiles involving Venus and Mars show that your partner has taken to heart the things you said and is consciously working on showing more affection. It could also be argued that lowering your expectations allows you both to be more spontaneous. A good thing to keep in mind is that it always feels awkward when you introduce these kinds of changes. Give yourself time and it will feel organic soon enough.

LEO (July 22-Aug. 21)

You say that you and your partner have insurmountable differences, yet neither of you looks like you're ready to call it quits. Maybe it's pride that forces you to keep locking horns or a competitive streak. In any case, you'll frustrate as much as bedevil each other and this could very well be the secret power behind your relationship. Too many relationships fall apart because there's no underlying need to be together. Your need to get the last word may not seem very romantic, but it will keep the fire going long after other romances have cooled.

VIRGO (Aug. 22-Sept. 21)

Nothing comes for free in this world — especially love. This is why you will work so hard to earn a lover's affection. You'll endeavor to be a constant source of support, encouragement and comfort. And sometimes when you focus on him more than yourself, you can make love more labor intensive than necessary. The beauty of the Venus/Neptune trine on Oct. 27 is that it puts you on the receiving end of this cosmic love energy. Be open to his appreciation and gratitude and let him be there for you for a change. You might grow to like it.

LIBRA (Sept. 22-Oct. 21)

Your sex appeal gets more appealing when Venus is in Scorpio. Scorpio is the zodiac sign of sex and money so you can expect these twin themes to dominate your life through Nov. 16. It will be fun having men lavish love, attention and riches on you but remember that there's also a hidden agenda. Venus in Scorpio tends to bring out people's covetous and obsessive sides. Men will want you for themselves and this could get ugly if you aren't careful. Don't lead anyone on for the sake of leading them on or you'll get stung.

SCORPIO (Oct. 22-Nov. 20)

Venus trine Neptune this week transforms you into a sex magnet. Scorpio is the zodiac sign of secret intrigues and covert operations so Venus here will add an element of danger and risk to your love affairs. This can be a lot of fun if you know what you're doing. Taking a walk on the wild side can be thrilling and exhilarating. However, if you don't feel confident about your command of a situation, then you'll want to tone it down over the next three weeks. You don't want to find yourself out of your depth.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 21-Dec. 20)

Not all romances are romances of the heart. There are romances of the mind, the spirit and the soul as well. Mercury's sextile to Jupiter on Nov. 1 points to you meeting a kindred spirit. You two will have many interests in common ranging from humor to philosophical outlook. The only catch is this relationship will be platonic. That means he's already in a relationship, gay or he lives in an altogether different part of the world. What you lack in sex you'll make up for in other departments — perhaps to the point of making people envious.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21-Jan. 18)

Falling in love with someone who's going through a life crisis is very seductive. Circumstances are volatile and every decision feels like it's a life or death one. It's exhilarating and erotic if you think about it. And thinking about it is something you should do on Nov. 1 when the Venus/Pluto sextile pushes you to act on unexpressed feelings. If you can accept the moment of need for what it is, then enjoy. If you have fantasies of creating a future together, then pass. He's in no place to think that far ahead right now.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 19-Feb. 17)

Nowadays you can pretty much tweet, message or text just about anybody ranging from an old crush in high school to the Pope. It doesn't mean this person will respond, but there's still a fun "message in the bottle" kind of randomness. On Nov. 1 you'll be surprised to hear back from someone you sent a greeting to long ago. It's someone that you always wondered about. Evidently this person's been wondering about you too. Things can stay light and breezy, but if you're looking for something more, then this is your chance to check it out.

You're all shark and no minnow while Venus is in predatory Scorpio (Oct.23 to Nov. 16). People who think of you as a sweet little guppy will be surprised when you start baring some piranha-like teeth. You'll set your sights higher, target what you want (nothing under six figures) and you won't stop until you get your man. There will be times when you'll ask yourself: Who is this person? Enjoy it while it lasts because the cosmic climate changes on Nov. 16. That's when you can go back to living life in a fishbowl if you'd like.

How exactly our breast cancer charity dollars are spent each year

We all want to save the ta-tas

Have you ever stopped to wonder, though, about the impact of all that money? We've looked at five of America's top-grossing breast cancer charities to find out what your dollars really mean for breast cancer survivors and their families.

  • There are over 1,000 breast cancer charities in the United States alone.
  • The five highest-grossing charities blow the others out of the water in terms of overall revenue.
  • The five highest-grossing charities are the American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. (Several of these provide services beyond breast cancer.)
  • Each year, these charities bring in nearly $2.4 billion earmarked for cancer support, research and awareness. A large chunk of this total is dedicated to breast cancer support.
  • Although it's challenging to parse out breast cancer support from other types of cancer support, consider the following highlights of breast cancer initiatives provided through these charity dollars:
  1. 750,000 free breast cancer screenings — including diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds and biopsies — for young, low-income women
  2. Over 100 clinical trials to evaluate emerging treatments for high-risk breast cancer patients
  3. Several clinical trials related to an emerging focus on breast reconstruction and its relation to emotional health
  4. 100 additional research grants to further understand and someday cure breast cancer
  5. Over 1 million free rides for patients who have difficulty driving to treatments
  6. A $300 credit for wigs, prostheses or medical supplies for each patient who earns under 250 percent of the federal poverty guidelines
  7. 90,000 supportive and/or referral phone calls for patients and survivors throughout their treatment process
  8. 157,000 patient referrals to community resources for further financial or social assistance
  9. Housing assistance, medical care and social services for 100,000 uninsured women and men with breast cancer
  10. Advocacy at over 400 congressional meetings, to promote funding and policies for preventative diagnostics, adequate insurance coverage and quality treatments for breast cancer patients
Get excited. These numbers are just the tip of the iceberg for the support and prevention services available to breast cancer patients and their families.

**Author's note: There are many breast cancer charities in the United States, but we developed this infographic based upon the revenues of America's five top-grossing breast cancer charities. These charities include the American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Some of these charities provide services that aren't solely specific to breast cancer. Their status on this list of top-grossing charities is based upon 2013 data from Forbes, and is not a statement about the effectiveness of each charity's programs. Since 2012 was the last year of complete tax information for all included charities, we've used each organization's 2012 Form 990 to create this infographic.

Confession: I don't want mommy friends

$
0
0

It's not that I'm trying to be rude or that I don't want to talk to you. It's really quite the opposite. I get nervous in large crowds — such as the one that gathers outside my child's class before the kids have been dismissed. I feel awkward standing silently next to other parents but even more awkward making random small talk in a group. (Oh, how small talk makes me want to crawl into a hole.)

I'm not sure if I'm shy, introverted or just a little cray, but if I have a casual conversation with other parents at my child's school, I could ruminate for hours on whether or not I said something stupid (which, in my mind, is always the former) and what said parents think about me now.

In reality, those parents probably don't even have the time or energy to care about our small conversation. Maybe they even think I'm nice. Funny? A stretch, but it could happen. But it's painstaking for me, so I'd rather avoid the situation altogether. I prefer one-on-one real talk. It's the way I've formed friendships my entire life — one true relationship at a time.

When my kids started school (starting four years ago with my son going to preschool), I longed to be a part of the "cool moms group" — you know, the fit ones in their yoga pants (that actually go to yoga) who drop off their kids then go to coffee or shopping for the three "free" hours until pickup time. I even managed to get invited to a few of these coffee/shopping sessions, but I never really felt like part of the clique, which just builds upon the anxieties that have been brewing since I became a mom... and back to my high school days, if we're being honest.

As my son got older, I noticed he's a bit like me. Kind of an introvert, maybe a bit of lone dove, by choice, but happy in that choice. At this point, he doesn't have the desire to play a team sport or have a friend over every day. He'd rather play LEGOS with me or chess with his dad after class. I worried at first that he wouldn't make friends or that he'd get left out. But then I began to take notice of how kids in his grade just naturally gravitate toward him. These are not friendships formed out of convenience, as I feel mommy friendships sometimes can be. The friendships he has are genuine. That's what really counts to him. And come to think of it, that's what really counts to me, too.

I decided I don't have to chat up every mom waiting to pick up their kid from school just because we're in the same place at the same time. I can just be, and if a real friendship develops with another mom on campus, then that's simply a bonus. So if you see me at school, please, skip the small talk. Let's get right down to the nitty gritty — that's where real friendships are formed anyway, right?
