The U.S. didn't 'voluntarily' end slavery and a public official should know that

0
0

She's concerned that Colorado's history classes don't spend enough time celebrating "American exceptionalism" and took to Facebook to argue the point.

"As an example, I note our slavery history," Mazanec wrote. "Yes, we practiced slavery. But we also ended it voluntarily, at great sacrifice, while the practice continues in many countries still today! Shouldn't our students be provided that viewpoint? This is part of the argument that America is exceptional. Does our APUSH Framework support or denigrate that position?”

Yes, you read that right. In a stunning demo of her own ignorance, she argues that the U.S. "voluntarily" ended slavery and that dwelling on all of these pesky, negative moments in our country's past somehow undermines students' ability to see how red, white, blue and awesome America really is. She wants high school history classes to help students understand about "American exceptionalism." Whatever that means.

As you can probably imagine, there were some folks who were pretty alarmed that someone in a position of authority over our education system could be so woefully uneducated herself, and started rallying around the social media hashtag #voluntaryhistory.

The hashtag was first started by historian, author and Duke University professor Laurent Dubois (@soccerpolitics), who calls #voluntaryhistory "a site for historiographical reflections on silencing of history and the costs of selective memory."

And boy-howdy has the social media universe taken up the challenge.

For instance...

In her defense, Mazanec has said, "When I made the statement, I assumed that all the readers of course knew that the Civil War was fought and that it was a long, bloody, difficult war that divided citizens and their families. I assumed that I didn’t have to explain or point out that the war was fought to end slavery, at least in part, in large part. And I was directly referring to the Civil War, the lives lost and the division among citizens by saying it came “at great sacrifice.” By “voluntarily,” I meant the passage of the 13th Amendment."

What do you think? Is this something that was just blown out of proportion? Or, is Mazanec being unsympathetic regarding America's true history with slavery? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.

The video features Lil Jon's "Turn Down For What" song with the performer heading into his local voting station to vote. He runs into famous faces like Lena Dunham and fitness trainer Tracy Anderson along the way. Other celebrities found in the polling place, include Natasha Lyonne, Ireland Baldwin and Glee actor Darren Criss.

Kendall Jenner is rocking the vote (VIDEO)

Each star explains why they are turning out to vote on election day. While Criss explains he is voting for education, Lyonne is there for prison reform and Sophia Bush is turning out for women's rights.

While the stars were all there for a great cause, the comments on YouTube certainly don't see it that way. Their views were filled with hate, vitriol and the assumption that everyone in the video was a Democrat.

BaneClandestine wrote, "I'm surprised at the end of the video it didn't say endorsed and sponsored by the DNC [Democratic National Convention], as that is what it was. A DNC advert."

Who's hotter: Darren Criss vs. Chord Overstreet

K Koenig said, "I'm turning out to counteract the votes of these idiots…"

Adam shared, "'Reproductive Rights.' Yeah, f*** letting the father have any say in the matter, or giving a s*** about the baby. I mean, it's not like you didn't both consent to having unprotected sex, and therefore accepted the chance of pregnancy from your actions."

Bess Byers had a more pragmatic approach. She said, "I'm turning out to vote because I believe politicians leaving us $17.8 trillion in debt is unacceptable and unpatriotic, although you don't hear celebrities singing about that…p.s.This video is everything wrong with Hollywood and politics."

Andrezej Sienko wrote, "Wow, I'm not certain what I just saw, but that was horrible. Was this supposed to motivate people to vote, or show us the reason democracy has failed in America? Whoever the hell the people in this video are, they should not be allowed [to] vote."

At least there was one voice of reason in the comments on the video site. garyto naptown summed up, "Vote independent people if your [sic] going to vote. Want to see things different do things different. Stop voting for the same two parries. Holla at your congressman clap the senators."

The official Cronut recipe is here, and it's as insanely difficult as you thought

Looking over the ingredient list, I'm starting to understand why so many people are willing to wait in line for one of Dominique Ansel's now-legendary pastries.

Cronut | Sheknows.com

For one, waiting in line for six hours is just a fraction of the time you would have to spend actually making these puppies at home.

It's a three-day process, and one that requires a fair amount of actual work. You have to make ganache, dough, glaze and flavored sugar. The dough has to be mixed, chilled, laminated, cut, fried and assembled. There are multiple chilling and proofing times, and my guess is that by the time you've actually managed to produce a finished Cronut, you'll be too tired to even enjoy it. Maybe just dip a croissant into some frosting and call it a day?

That said, if you're a serious home baker with a lot of time on your hands (like, 72 hours to be precise), the recipe does sound delicious. Ganache options include vanilla-rose and Champagne-chocolate, the flavored sugars boast maple and orange, and rose glaze and lemon glaze certainly sound tasty.

The daring among you can check out the recipe here and decide if you're up for the challenge. The rest of you? Well, you can always join me on a field trip to Jack in the Box.

We just ranked the top seven versions of Supernatural's Sam Winchester

0
0

The youngest (and tallest) Winchester has been through many incarnations since the first season. Here's a look at all them ranked in order from worst to best.

Supernatural: 8 Reasons I'm already in love with Demon Dean

7. Ezekiel Sam

I had a rough time with this version of Sam because I like Tahmoh Penikett so much that I really wanted to see him play Ezekiel the whole season. So when Ezekiel possessed Sam, I was disappointed. I also kind of hated that it was yet another secret between the brothers that led to yet another falling-out between them. So while it was still interesting to see another version of Sam, he wasn't my favorite.

6. Demon Blood Sam

My feelings for this incarnation of Sam are similar to those I had about Ezekiel Sam. This version represented a lot of things that were going wrong during that time. Sam was talked into drinking blood by Ruby and it turned him into a different person who was scary... and not in a good way. Sure, he was kind of ripped and looked pretty good when he was on the demon blood, but that was about the only positive side of this version, at least for me.

5. Body Swap Sam

One day Sam found himself swapped into the body of a teenager and that teenager inhabiting his meat suit. The swap made for some absolutely hysterical moments and though I realized it wasn't actually a "version" of Sam because Sam wasn't in his body, I still had to add it to my list. Part of the fun of seeing different versions of Sam is seeing how Padalecki plays those versions, and Teenage Sam was a triumph. Padalecki captured that spirit of a kid and made us believe that a teenager had truly taken up residence in his long and lanky body.

4. Demon Meg Sam

This version of Sam was the first time we got to see the younger Winchester with someone else inside his body. It took a while to realize that something was off, but once I did, I couldn't help but be enthralled by him. Meg Sam was frightening, and yet I couldn't keep my eyes off of him because I had to know what he was going to do next. I still remember gasping in terror when he slammed Jo's head into the bar. In that moment, I had no idea what was going to happen next and how far he would go, and I have to admit it was thrilling. Plus, like Dean said, the coolest part of this version is the fact that he had a woman inside him for a week.

Supernatural sneak peek: Why so bloody, Sammy?

3. Lucifer Sam

Though we didn't get to see him for very long, the Lucifer version was an odd mix of sad, strong and perhaps even a touch of sexy. The chat that he had with Michael-Adam was one of those scenes that I watched again and again, crying harder every time. Through Lucifer Sam, we got to learn more about Sam and Dean's relationship and how their family dynamic was achingly similar to one so ancient. At the core, their stories were just that of two brothers trying to get their father's attention and do what was right for the world.

2 Soulless Sam (aka RoboSam)

When Sam was rescued from Lucifer's cage, he came home missing a vital part of himself: his soul. I enjoyed this version of Sam because, well, he was kind of a badass. He didn't waste time worrying about anyone else's feelings and just did what he needed to do to get the job done. While I don't think he necessarily always made the best decisions, he was still a blast to watch. Plus, he was hilarious. Hands down, I think RoboSam had the best sense of humor of all of them.

1. Regular Sam

After all these other manifestations, coming back down to regular, plain old Sam might seem going backwards. But the truth is that no matter how mesmerizing these other versions are, nothing beats the original. Sam Winchester is a man who has grown up before our eyes, from the law student who wanted nothing do with the hunter's life to the hunter who has been through so much it would make another man weep. Yet he always does his best to keep that integrity we saw in him in Season 1 and, like his brother, tries to do everything for the greater good. In a word, Sam Winchester is a hero.

Here are six things we think will happen during The Walking Dead Season 5

0
0

The new about the renewal is fantastic for all fans. This series shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon and it's great to know that fans have another season to look forward to once this one is complete. That news, plus the companion series that's still in the works, means that there are going to be plenty of zombies to enjoy for years to come.

Carl's rap in new Walking Dead lip-dub is hilarious beyond words (VIDEO)

Now that we've celebrated Season 6, let's turn our attention back to Season 5. Grab your crossbows and other weapons you can get your hands on, for the walkers will be back in just a few days. We've rounded up every spoiler and teaser we could find and put them together into a list of predictions we think could happen on the show this season.

From Zap2It, we've gathered a few teasers about the premiere, which also might give some hints about the rest of the season.

Secrets of Terminus will be revealed

According to that article, a whole lot about the people at Terminus will be discovered within the first few minutes of the premiere. But we think that there will still be a lot of secrets about them that will continue to be revealed throughout the season. They don't seem like the kind of people who will show all their cards up front, not by a long shot.

Grossness will abound

We're sort of basing this on what was said in the article above, but we're also throwing this out there because, well, this is The Walking Dead. The show has been grossing us out for four season so far and just when we think things couldn't possibly get more disgusting, they always do. So it's probably a good idea to skip eating dinner until after you watch each episode.

The Walking Dead's Sonequa Martin-Green is pregnant: Is Sasha expecting, too?

Bring on the tears

Along with the gross, this show has always delivered on the tears. Just because the series is about the zombie apocalypse doesn't mean it can't have heart. In fact, the apocalypse just adds to the heartbreak. Anyone remember Lizzie and Mika from last season? Yeah, so do we and we're sure that TWD probably has something even more tragic up their sleeves for Season 5.

Death becomes them

It wouldn't be another season of The Walking Dead if people we cared about didn't die in horrible, bloody ways. It's hard to pick who might be lost this season as we love so many of the characters, but if there was a gun put to our head (or a zombie sent after us) we'd probably predict that some of the likely candidates would be Abraham or maybe Bob, since they always manage to put themselves in a lot of danger. Since there's always at least one shocking death per season, we have to wonder which of the main characters could go next. Could it be Carol or maybe Glenn, or what about Beth or Maggie? Any death would be hard, but those would kill us.

Rick is out of control... or is he?

In a recent article on EW, "the group prevents Rick from taking [a] certain action that could come back to haunt them later." Could that mean that Rick might again be close to going feral and murdering someone? If that's the case, then we have to wonder if he could end up learning from whatever the group says to stop him and calms down. We already know from the previews that Rick is going to kick some major tail to get his people out if he has to, but will he learn to control those violent tendencies as well?

Another baby?

Glenn and Maggie's love has survived the zombie apocalypse, but is it strong enough to bring a new life into the world? Rick's baby girl has made it so far, but it's been far from easy, and who knows how long it will be before father and daughter are reunited. Yet we can't help but hope that maybe somehow Maggie and Glenn could make it happen. After all, if no one has any children then what are they ultimately fighting for?

The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 9/8c on AMC. What are your predictions for the upcoming season?

Mini apple pie ice cream sandwiches are an adorable autumn treat

To create pie ice cream sandwiches, you'll need to start off by creating miniature hand pies. To create hand pies is simple, but takes some planning ahead since they need to be completely cooled before placing the ice cream in the pies.

Apple hand pie ice cream sandwiches

I made a homemade pie crust because to me they are the best and no store crust can compare. However, if you are looking for an easier recipe, a store-bought crust will definitely work too.

Using the top of a jar or a circle cookie cutter, cut out dough in the shape of circles. Place the circles on a tray lined with parchment and then spoon some pie filling onto the dough. You can use whatever pie filling flavor you would like or even use a homemade one. I used a store-bought apple pie filling for this recipe.

After spooning on the apple pie filling, place one more crust on top of the other crust and crimp the edges by using the ends of fork. Press the fork down into the two pieces of the dough to firmly seal the hand pies.

After an easy egg wash and a light sprinkling of sugar, these hand pies get baked for 12-15 minutes. Then remove from the oven and allow the pies to completely cool.

Meanwhile, prepare the ice cream centers. Line a Mason jar or shallow baking cup with plastic wrap or tin foil. Scoop slightly softened ice cream into the cup or jar and press it down, smoothing the top. Place the ice cream in the freezer to harden again.

Once the pies are cooled, place the ice cream center on one pie and peel off the aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Place the other pie on top and enjoy immediately. These are sure to be a new favorite dessert.

Apple hand pie ice cream sandwich recipe

This apple hand pies are so easy to make and such a fun way to serve pie with all the fresh fall apples that are in season right now. Although this tutorial teaches how to do a homemade pie crust, you can always use a store-bought one making these hand pies even easier.

Serves 6

Prep Time: 30 minutes | Cook Time: 12-15 minutes | Total Time: 42-45 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1-1/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup + 1 tablespoon butter flavored shortening
  • 4 tablespoons water
  • 1 egg white
  • 1/3 cup apple pie filling
  • Sugar for sprinkling
  • Vanilla ice cream

Directions:

  1. Combine flour and salt in a medium-sized bowl. Add shortening in small cubes. Cut the shortening in with two knives until you get pea-sized pieces.
  2. Stir in the water and then knead the dough.
  3. Roll out the dough and cut out circles.
  4. Place about 1/2 tablespoon of apple pie filling in the middle of half of the circles. Top the apple pie-filled covered circles with remaining dough circles and crimp with a fork to seal.
  5. Slice an X shape in the top of the pies and then spread a lightly beaten egg white over the pies with a pastry brush. Sprinkle sugar lightly over the top.
  6. Bake in a 350 degree F preheated oven for 12-15 minutes. Remove and allow to completely cool.
  7. Place ice cream in between two pies and enjoy immediately.
  8. Check the notes for an ice cream tip.

Pit bull bonds with baby

Pit bull bonds with baby

For so long the innocent little fellows have been trained, beaten and forced by humans into fighting each other because of their natural strength. It's cruel, and as a result, people still view pit bulls as wild, mean and unpredictable dogs — the last pet you'd want around your baby. Well that's foolish, and now we've got a video to show to any doubters. Just look at how happy this baby is to being playing with his puppy pal!

The baby is not the only one having a grand old time. Look at the animal grin! It's strange to think of a dog expressing happiness through a smile, but that exposed vulnerable belly paired with that upturned grin is proof that this is a dog that is totally content having a tiny human friend to play with all the live-long day.

Can you steal a baby name? Mila and Ashton reportedly did

0

The name Wyatt is a fairly common name for a baby boy, but it is a modern and much more unique choice for a girl. Where did Kunis and Kutcher get the inspiration for their unusual baby name choice? The couple reportedly received gifts of baby clothes from a baby boutique in New York City that is owned by Rachel Uchitel, who happens to the ex-mistress of Tiger Woods.

The name of the store? Wyatt Lily. Uchitel named the store after her own 2-year-old daughter named Wyatt Lily.

We jumped over to Uchitel’s Twitter page and she did send a tweet to the couple calling out their copycat baby name.

Rachel Uchitel tweet

Rachel Uchitel tweet

Do you think Uchitel was sincere — or a little annoyed?

This isn't the first time there was copycat baby name drama among celebrities. Kristin Cavallari gave birth to a son she named Camden Jack — and just a few weeks later Vanessa Lachey and Nick Lachey welcomed a son they named Camden John.

Cavallari's somewhat snarky response? "Apparently Camden is a popular name!" she tweeted.

This leads us to another question: Can baby names really be stolen? There is etiquette involved when searching for the perfect baby name. For example, if your sister-in-law or your best friend told you about their favorite baby name and you turned around and named your own child that same name before they were able to, then you may cause some hurt feelings.

If you hear a cool name from a baby boutique owner that you have no personal connection to and will probably not be hanging out the in the same circles with? I say that all bets are off and the baby name is fair game.

In case you missed it, Kutcher made the baby name announcement on his website, writing: "Mila and I would like to welcome Wyatt Isabelle Kutcher to the world. May your life be filled with wonder, love, laughter, health, happiness, curiosity and privacy."

He then posted a series of baby photos (including baby animals) and wrote: "Can you guess which one is ours, or does it really matter? All babies are cute."

Well played, Kutcher.

Tell us: What do you think? Can baby names be stolen?

The long-term effects of eating red meat are not in our favor

0
0

According to a new study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, eating processed and unprocessed red meat is linked to a higher risk for death.

Swedish researchers looked at nearly 75,000 people to see if there was a link between eating red meat and mortality. The scientists looked at people's eating habits, exercise regimen, booze consumption, smoking intake and other lifestyle factors. They asked participants about different types of red meat and had patients note how frequently they consumed the meats. They then followed up 15 years later.

During the 15-year span, they noted that about 20 percent of the people died. Compared to those who never ate red meat, those who had about 10.5 ounces of processed and unprocessed meat or so a day had a shorter lifespan by about two years. Processed meat was the worst — those who had about 3.5 ounces of it a day had a shorter survival of about nine months. High and moderate intake of unprocessed meat was linked to shorter lifespans only when the people also ate a lot of processed meats.

"It is reasonable to assume that processed and nonprocessed meat might have different biological mechanisms, resulting in different effects on mortality," the authors said in their report. "Red meat is a rich source of zinc and dietary protein, which might be responsible for the positive effect of red meat consumption. On the other hand, meat processing involves different potentially adverse components that could counteract the positive effects of the beneficial nutrients in meat."

"The consumption of nonprocessed meat alone was not associated with shorter survival," the researchers reported.

Thinking of becoming a vegetarian? You don't have to go to extremes; you can phase out red meats in order to improve your health. And seeking out organic choices is another option to make meat-eating a bit better for you.

Popular processed meats to avoid include:

  • Sausages
  • Hot dogs
  • Salami
  • Cold cuts

Unprocessed meats, which you also might want to limit, include fresh and minced pork, beef and veal.

Can't give up your occasional burger? Why not start with Meatless Mondays and see how it goes?

"Just give up meat one day a week. All you’ve got to do is eat a meat-free dish, which can be simple and easy, such as veggie lasagna, bean tacos, beans and rice, or a veggie burger," says Sharon Palmer, a dietitian and author of Plant-Powered for Life: Eat Your Way to Lasting Health With 52 Simple Steps & 125 Delicious Recipes.

Palmer shared some other tips for eating less of or eliminating red meat intake:

  • Once you’ve got Meatless Monday under control, try another few nights eating meat-free by trying some new recipes featuring beans, tofu, nuts, whole grains and veggies. Some of my favorites are tofu veggie stir-fry with brown rice, meatless chili with cornbread, and lentil curry with whole grains.
  • Try ethnic food for inspiration, many cultures around the world, such as Asia, India, Greece, and even Africa, have many delicious plant-based foods, such as Indian cal with basmatic rice, tabouleh (Greece), seitan noodle dishes (Asia), and yam vegetable stews (Ethiopia).
  • Borrow another trick from ethnic cultures and use one portion of meat for an entire family sized dish, such as a pasta dish with chopped chicken, shrimp in a vegetable stir-fry, or turkey in a potato casserole.
  • Extend your meat with veggies. For example, use half beef and half mushrooms in tacos, use half meat in your lasagna and load up the veggies, and use half of the meat in your beef stew and load up on the veggies.
  • Breakfast is easy to go meat-free, just do whole grain porridges, veggie bean breakfast burritos, and whole grain fruit and nut waffles.

Baby names from Supernatural

Urban fantasy is all over the place these days, from young adult bookshelves to the big screen. Hits like Buffy the Vampire Slayer brought paranormal activity to the real world. While it was far from the first, it proved this genre has a loyal following of superfans. Then came Supernatural.

Similar to Buffy, it tells the story of two brothers fighting assorted supernatural beasts on a quest to free their father from a demon. Nine seasons later, the show has sparked novels, comics and even an anime series. And all the fans. They dress up at cons and they write fan fiction, but this is the ultimate test. How many allow their fandom influence the names of their children?

Spooky Supernatural names for boys

Sassy Supernatural names for girls

You have no interest in giving your girl a once upon a time, happily ever after moniker. Supernatural fans know how badass these ladies can be. Characters like Lenore prove that, even with a softer side, lady vampires are not to be fooled around with. We applaud the writers' fearlessness when giving feminine names to strong female characters. So often they fall into the trap of thinking unisex or boy names are necessary to convey toughness. Nope.

5 Reasons we did not see the Amber Rose, Wiz Khalifa split coming

The beauty took to Twitter on Monday, Oct. 6 to share two particularly heartbreaking tweets about the pain that she is going through, just two weeks after announcing her split from Khalifa.

Amber Rose Twitter

Amber Rose Twitter

Amber Rose Twitter 2

Amber Rose Twitter 2

It is this rare show of vulnerability that has endeared us to Rose, but it's also broken our hearts, because anyone who has ever loved and lost can connect with her pain. And Rose certainly loved; just one look at her previous Instagram posts and it's evident that her husband was her everything.

Her Instagram account is sprinkled with beautiful pictures of the once-happy couple and emotional tributes, such as "I knew as soon as I met u, u were the one for me sweetheart" and "I'll love u forever." We're tearing up just taking a trip down memory lane with this couple.

Just last April, Rose decided to get decorated with a giant tattoo of Khalifa's face on her arm — and if that's not dedication and proof of her love, then we're not sure what is.

The new dirt on Wiz Khalifa? He has a thing for twins

To make matters worse, it looks as though the model has been betrayed by her former partner, because reports suggest that Khalifa cheated on her with a pair of twins.

According to Us Weekly, a source revealed that the former couple had a tumultuous relationship and often fought, but that is not to say that they didn't love each other deeply.

"They do love each other," the source told the publication, "but this is what happens when two young people fall in love and get married and have a baby too quickly."

What do Amber Rose and Gene Simmons have in common?

We tend to disagree with that statement, because everyone should take a shot at love and happiness when presented with it. And when it comes down to it, it's refreshing to think about how much we, as a species riddled with flaws, are actually able to love and, in turn, hurt.

Baby names from American Horror Story

American Horror Story: Murder House (Season 1), which takes place in Los Angeles in 2011, follows the life of a troubled family who moves into a house that is haunted by its former occupants.

The Harmons — Ben, Vivien and Violet — move from Boston to LA to get a fresh start. Their real estate agent, Marcy, hooks them up with a house that, unbeknownst to them, has been the scene of dozens of murders and suicides. Take your rutabaga to a new level with this Hasselback technique

0
0

The hasselback potato gets its name from the Hasselbacken hotel in Stockholm. They were apparently the first ones to think up the idea of thinly slicing (but not all the way through) a potato, stuffing it with butter and cheese and baking it to a crisp. And to that, I say thank you, dear ingenious Swedes. The idea has been done every which way possible with potatoes, so let's expand our horizons a bit to root vegetables with this rutabaga version.

Rutabaga are perfect for the hasselback approach, since they're firm and roast beautifully. This version tops the crispy, semisliced, roasted vegetable with hot garlic butter sauce. It may not be a potato, but it definitely doesn't taste like a vegetable either.

Hasselback rutabaga with garlic butter sauce recipe

Rutabaga are a great vegetable to treat like a potato with the hasselback approach of thinly semislicing and roasting until crispy. This version gets drizzled with a hot garlic butter sauce too.

Serves 4

Prep time: 10 minutes | Bake time: 40 minutes | Total time: 50 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 4 rutabaga, washed and root ends sliced off so that they sit flat
  • 4 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • Salt and pepper

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees F.
  2. Cut thin slices into each rutabaga about 3/4 of the way through, careful to not go all the way through the vegetable.
  3. Stuff 2 tablespoons of butter between the slices, and then rub butter all over the exterior of each rutabaga.
  4. Season with salt and pepper, place onto a baking sheet, and bake for about 40 minutes, until crispy.
  5. To a small skillet over medium-low heat, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter.
  6. Add the garlic, and let it cook for 3 to 5 minutes, careful to not burn the garlic.
  7. Pour the garlic butter sauce on top of the rutabaga, and serve hot.

If you see Amanda Bynes in public, steer clear

The Easy A star made a solo appearance at the Gilded Lily Nightclub in Chelsea for an event Monday night and was seen dancing alone wearing sunglasses. Bynes apparently assaulted a woman who was trying to take photos of her at the club and reportedly scratched the club-goer on her neck and arms, TMZ reported.

According to the gossip site, people in the club began snapping photos of Bynes as she yelled at them to stop. But Bynes lost her cool when she forcefully spun said woman toward her and began scratching her. The supposed victim, however, said she was still a fan and didn't want to press charges.

The next day, Bynes was again reportedly seen in Bloomingdale's as she limped around for hours with only one shoe on. She was also allegedly talking and mumbling to herself incoherently.

Bynes' family is very concerned for her, especially since her DUI arrest last month. They think something bad may happen to the former thespian as she continues to go down a troubling path.

Another eyebrow-raising report is claiming that Bynes is engaged to be married to a 19-year-old California bait-shop clerk. In Touch Weekly says that the once-popular child star told them some very peculiar details about her new relationship and hopes for the future.

Amanda Bynes is suing everyone & becoming a rapper

"I am very needy for friendship and I hate men." Bynes reputedly told the magazine. "I want to f*** them, but I can now say I'm engaged — get away from me. I want to be married and I want to be away from people."

She continued on explaining why she only wants baby boys after she gets married.

"I want boys, for sure. However many I can pop out," Bynes went on. "I don't want a gorgeous girl around. Then I [would] feel way jealous. Ew."

How to keep your naked selfies out of the reach of hackers

Steer clear of company WiFi

Even if you’re sending an email from your personal device or a personal email account, if it’s running on your employer’s Wi-Fi, they have access to it.

“There are companies that employ SSL interception proxies that essentially allow them to see everything that flows through their network,” Siegrist warns. “If you’re unsure whether or not your company employs interception proxies, and want to avoid the risk altogether, we recommend using your phone's mobile network and avoid using the company WiFi to increase your personal privacy.”

If what you’re sending or receiving isn’t something you want your boss to read, opt for your cell network connection. The extra data fees are nothing compared to having your employer know you’re sending out resumes to hustle up a new gig.

Amp up your lame passwords

Our passwords are the only thing between us and the hackers and we’re still using the same one across many, many accounts. Admit it. If someone gets their hands on that password in one spot, it’s a decent bet the same password will work across several—if not all—of your other password-protected data.

“Would any reasonable person use the same key for every lock - your house, your car, your storage unit, etc? No!” Siegrist adds. “And if you came across a person who did this, you would undoubtedly question their sanity.”

Mix up your passwords and make them complicated. There are apps and tools to help you keep track of all of those tricky passwords, a service Siegrist’s company offers.

Avoid the Cloud at all costs

Your data is pretty safe, as long as its not in the Cloud.

The recent iCloud hack is a prime example of how easily data can be poached when it’s stored on a server, rather than your device. Some devices like the Amazon Fire and iPhones have setting which automatically store a backup of your data in the Cloud. If you’re concerned, make sure you turn that off.

“Once your data is in the cloud all bets are off,” Siegrist says. “As we’ve seen lately, using and relying on the cloud can be very risky - you're relying on both the provider and the strength of your passwords—as well as the answers to your security questions—to protect you, and if one of these fails, it can be easy to access your stored information.”

Go old-school and get a Polaroid

Steal this tip from Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, and go old-school with your sexy selfies.

“Apart from using a Polaroid camera and storing those photos in a safe under your bed or tucked away in the foundation of your house, there’s really no safe way to take or store naked selfies,” Siegrist says. "Once the file has been stored, there's always the risk that it could get transferred to the cloud. We have recently seen how easy it can be to hack some clouds and wind up with naked photos plastered all over the Internet.”

Sorry ladies and gentlemen, looks like we all have to decide for ourselves: Am I a naked selfie person or not? Because those suckers can get out there if someone’s motivated enough to liberate them from your custody.

Don’t say you haven’t been warned.

Rice pudding caramel cake with a dollop of rum whipped cream

Rice is almost always considered a savory side, but in this recipe I'm rethinking rice, and letting it be the sweet star. The key is in using Rice Select arborio rice, which has a natural creaminess, usually reserved for its use in risotto, but in rice pudding it adds so much to the texture. I added a little dark rum for extra flavor, but the great thing about this recipe is that you can really make it your own. Add cinnamon and raisins, or maybe orange peel and a little chocolate, it can take on any sweet combination you like. Finish it with a dollop of rum spiked whipped cream and enjoy!

Rice Pudding

Rice pudding caramel cake recipe

Ingredients:

For the cake:

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 cups half-and-half
  • 2 cups canned coconut milk
  • 2/3 cup Rice Select Arborio rice
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 pinch kosher salt
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons dark rum

For the rum whipped cream:

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon dark rum

Directions:

For the cake:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Spray the bottom and the sides of an 8-by-1.5-inch round cake pan with oil. Stir together the sugar and water in a high-sided small saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves, then raise the heat to moderately-high and boil without stirring, occasionally brushing down sides of the pan with a wet pastry brush, until the syrup turns deep amber in color. Immediately remove the pan from the heat and pour the caramel into the prepared cake pan. Quickly tilt the pan to cover the bottom with the caramel. Set aside to cool and harden.
  3. Bring the half-and-half, rice, brown sugar and salt to a simmer in a medium heavy saucepan over medium heat. Stirring constantly, cook for about 15 minutes, or until most of the liquid is absorbed. Remove the pan from the heat and let stand for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. In a small bowl whisk the eggs and vanilla together, then whisk into the rice mixture.
  4. Pour the rice mixture into the cake pan. Bake the cake for about 35-40 minutes, or until the top just begins to brown but the center is still slightly jiggly. Let cool completely on a wire rack. Run a thin knife around the edges of the pan. Invert the cake onto a plate, tap on the pan and carefully remove the pan. Serve with rum whipped cream.

For the rum whipped cream:

  1. With an electric beater, whip the cream until thickened, and add the sugar and rum. Continue whipping until soft peaks form. Dollop over the cake.

Yields one 8-inch cake, about 10 servings

Lea Michele gets dis of a lifetime from Jessica Lange

An awkward moment on the red carpet of American Horror Story: Freak Show proved that the A-list versus B-list does exist. Lea Michele was posing for photographers wearing a gorgeous green velvet dress by Cushnie Et Ochs when the star of the series, Jessica Lange, walked by.

The Glee actress was prepared to have a moment with the two-time Oscar-winning star as she passed by on the red carpet. Michele looked at Lange and was seen mouthing "hi" to the AHS vet. Lange didn't even glance at Michele; she continued to look straight ahead and walk on by without acknowledging the starlet.

Michele tried to save face by swinging her hair back and self-consciously brushing it with her fingers. She then goes right back into paparazzi mode and begins posing like nothing ever happened just moments before.

Gwyneth Paltrow vs. Martha Stewart is the ultimate WASP feud

At Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit on Tuesday, Paltrow was asked about Stewart's recent comments about the Iron Man 3 actress.

Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow are now consciously uncoupled neighbors

Stewart had said about Paltrow and Goop, "She just needs to be quiet. She's a movie star. If she were confident in her acting, she wouldn't be trying to be Martha Stewart."

Well, Paltrow has a pretty confident answer for the lifestyle guru.

She joked to interviewer Kristin van Ogtrop, "No one has ever said anything bad about me before, so I'm shocked and devastated. I'll try to recover. If I'm really honest, I'm so psyched that she sees us as competition. I really am."

It's clear that Goop isn't trying to copy Stewart's blueprint. While Stewart appeals to the more crafty do-it-yourselfers, Paltrow's site is high-end, expensive and not-so-homemade.

Gwyneth Paltrow throws ultimate dinner party for Obama

She continued, "I think that when anyone criticizes anyone, it's revealing more about where they are in time and space versus where you are in time and space. It's usually a reflection of something else. At this point in my life, I don't take it personally. I see it as a projection."

Meow! That comment cut right through Stewart's comments on Paltrow, so it's clear that a cookie bake-off is not going to happen anytime soon. The two queens of the lifestyle category are going to have to carve out their niches individually.
