Not only is this gray sliding barn door gorgeous, but it allows the homeowners to make clever use of space in the kitchen by hiding mismatched dinnerware in a recessed nook.

If "coastal equestrian" is a thing, then this breezy white kitchen has it — complete with a beadboard-ended island and, of course, an extra-wide barn door.

Designed by Ink Architecture + Interiors out of Charleston, South Carolina, this kitchen — dubbed "Chateau de Charleston" — boasts an undeniably French Country feel. A rustic wood barn door enhances the Provencal appeal.

There's a barn door out there for everyone, and this sliding pantry door speaks to those with a fondness for craftsmen style. We especially love the distressed style and olive hue.

Extra-large double barn doors provide a nice separation between this kitchen and the room beyond. And, while beautiful, the unfinished knotty pine lets the colorful kelly green cabinets and dramatic island be the stars.

OK, so isn't your typical "barn door." However, it merits including because its barn door style — paired with a chalkboard front — makes this mini an irresistible kitchen add-on.

Even super-traditional kitchens are showing barn doors some love. In this elegant space, a single sliding barn door complements other rustic elements in the space, such as the wood plank dining table and island lanterns.

Well, now if this cheeky use of a barn door outside isn't clever, we're hanging up our hats and calling it a day. In this capacity, the doors are being used in an indoor style to house an outdoor kitchen that kinda looks like an actual barn. Swoon.

In this Yankee Barn Homes post-and-beam barn home, barn doors feel right at home seguing from the vaulted dining room into the kitchen. The super-tall, super-narrow styling proves a nice alternative to its classic wide-width cousin.

Can we just say wow? Thanks to a set of incredibly cool barn doors flanking it, the entry to this kitchen is a total showstopper.

By opting for panel-styled decorative "barn" doors in this kitchen, the homeowners added dimension to the space and smartly avoided competition between the ceiling beams and sliding doors.

If ever there was a design combo we can't get enough of, its gray paint mixed with natural wood elements. We adore the way the driftwood tones in this barn door pick up the gray in the marble surfaces and gray island.

What do you do when you have two distinct kitchen spaces and need to delineate between the two? Install a set of salvaged, barn-style doors... that's what.

If you already have knotty heart pine flooring in your kitchen and worry adding knotty barn doors will be jarring, don't. As this kitchen goes to show, sliding barn doors in a slightly darker finish only add to the warmth and interest of the space.

There are so many facets to this kitchen design that suggest to us the homeowners are the kind of people we'd dig, and one of them — in all certainty — is that industrial chic rolling barn door.

Model says Jason Derulo was cheating on Jordin Sparks

The "Talk Dirty" singer recently told Ryan Seacrest that he dumped the American Idol winner because she and various unnamed "others" were pushing him to put a ring on it. While that may or may not be the case, there's another factor involved too: Derulo's alleged cheating.

Model Carmen Ortega has come forward to claim she had a brief fling with the star over the summer — but says she had no idea he was taken.

"We dated for a month," Ortega told Star magazine. "We went out in public with friends a few times, so I assumed he didn't have a girlfriend."

Once she found out about Sparks, Ortega says she kicked him to the curb. "I cut ties with him immediately," she explained. "He tried telling me their relationship was strictly fueled by management teams. He lied to me the entire time."

This isn't the first time Ortega has claimed a celeb has cheated with her. In 2009, she said she had an affair with Reggie Bush while he was dating Kim Kardashian.

Was this tweet from Jordin Sparks a hint about the breakup?

Derulo has not commented on Ortega's claims specifically, but in a general statement about the breakup to US Weekly, he denied cheating played any part in the split.

"I spent three great years with Jordin and she is one of the most amazing people that I have ever met. But as in all relationships there are ups and downs and at this time we have decided to amicably part," he told the mag.

"Infidelity, cheating or deceit played no part in our relationship or our breakup, and I hope that people respect our privacy as we move forward with our lives."

Derulo and Sparks were last spotted together at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 24.

8 Reasons you don't get to change your dumb baby on a Chipotle dining table

$

I am no stranger to the impromptu diaper change. I have changed my baby in the trunk of my car, on top of my shaking knees in a toilet stall with my legs stretched straight out and on a bench in a deserted Atlanta botanical garden in the rain.

It sucks when businesses or spaces don't provide a changing table, but that said, there is no way I will ever be Team Two-top Diaper Change. Once again, some entitled mom did the old revenge diaper change on a table, but this time it went too far. This woman changed her baby at a Chipotle's.

You don't put the baby poop in the same place the delicious burritos go. You just don't. I know there are people who will say that that's what this restaurant deserves for not providing a changing table. But I can guarantee you that you are not sticking it to "The Man" when you change poo in full sight of some underpaid employees and a host of diners just trying to enjoy some delicious guac, OK?

Hell, even this lady's husband said he thinks she was being unsavory, unlike delicious adobo-marinated meat. Here are all the reasons you don't change your dumb baby on a Chipotle's dining room table.

1. While a swaddled baby looks like a delicious burrito, you might be surprised to know they are not burritos at all. For this reason alone, they don't belong on the table.

2. Even though it is completely appropriate for adults to poop in the Chipotle dining room if the toilet is out of order, the same is not true of babies.

3. While it's true that everyone loves your specific child and everything it does — including evacuation — not everyone has suppressed their gag reflex as thoroughly as you have.

4. Cilantro smells bad enough without the addition of baby dookins.

5. It's true that the world owes you everything because you had a baby, but there are way less gross methods of unleashing your wrath upon the general manager of a Tex-Mex restaurant who failed to add a diaper changing station to a franchise he or she had no input whatsoever in building. You could trash their Yelp page, for instance, or hurl profanity at them.

6. A really hungry diner might accidentally try to eat your baby because it is on the table.

Mom debate: Is a condom costume appropriate for high school?

$

Bethany Ramos: High school should apologize to Trojan Man

I know what you're thinking — at first glance, a headline about a teen boy wearing a Trojan Man costume to school sounds atrocious. Until you read on to find out the Trojan Man costume was worn on a Florida school's "character day" in an attempt to spread a safe sex message. 17-year-old Jack Englund was told to remove the inappropriate homemade condom costume, complete with a cape and blue Trojan poster board sign hung around his neck. I like his style.

If this wonky costume was worn any other day of the week, I could see where the school was coming from. It would be a potential violation of dress code. But it was "character day." And even if Jack's message was tongue in cheek and totally typical for a teen boy, it was still sex-positive. Good for him.

Fortunately Jack's mother wasn't a tight-ass about the whole ordeal, and I'm with her 100 percent. Sandy Englund, a lawyer, points out the crux of the issue: The school is overreacting. Jack is a teenage high school student who will be attending college next year. High schoolers are likely to see much worse on the internet. How are schools going to provide adequate sex education if "Trojan" is that offensive?

Michelle Maffei: Leave the condom costumes at home

Who does student Jack Englund think he's fooling? We weren't born yesterday; he clearly wore the Trojan Man costume to get a rise. While I applaud his ploy to hide behind the safe sex message, I highly doubt that was his honest intention.

I don't consider myself a prude whatsoever, but when it comes to my kids, I won't be encouraging underage kids to hook up under my roof or encouraging other people's kids to have sex, safe or not. But by his parents rallying behind Englund to parade his sexual message around campus, these parents are getting involved in a discussion that should be between me and my teens or the school faculty and the student body.

Look, the topic of teen sex isn't new. And while abstinence is best, I'm all about encouraging kids to practice safe sex. But when it comes to teen sex, we all owe it to ourselves to at least acknowledge that it's a fine line between each side of this debate. Leave costumes of condom packages, T-shirts about virginity and "all the cool girls are lesbians" attire at home. There are better ways to raise student awareness about safe sex and abstinence than to let teens take matters into their own hands.

Trick-or-treating isn't for babies

$

I promise you that I am not the Grinch of all fun-filled family holidays. In fact, I have a special love for Halloween because I was not allowed to celebrate for many years growing up in a religious family — unless you count the knockoff Harvest Festival that encouraged biblical costumes, which I don't.

I love Halloween. I love my kids. I just think we all know what's going on when a baby shows up at your doorstep begging for treats on Halloween. If you look a little closer, you might notice that there is a tall adult holding the baby at eye level. You see, babies can't walk door-to-door to trick-or-treat, they can't ask for candy, and they also can't eat any of the delicious candy that you drop into the pillowcase the parent is holding.

When you give candy to a baby on Halloween, you are giving candy to his parent. You are an enabler, and you've also fallen for the oldest trick in the book. (Perhaps that's why they call it trick or treat?)

There are some people who have a great disdain for teenagers who show up on their doorstep and demand candy on Halloween. This group believes that teens are far too old to trick-or-treat, and I see their point. On the other side of the argument, babies in costume shouldn't be allowed to trick-or-treat either. They are far too young, and everyone knows hard candy is a choking hazard.

Babies are certainly a special part of Halloween, when used strategically as the prop they were designed to be. As any new parent can tell you, babies are essentially inanimate objects for a good six months. If you time everything right, between a feeding and bedtime, they will happily sit in a festive fall wagon on your doorstep so that everyone can ooh and aah as you hand out candy to actual children dressed to trick-or-treat.

Dress your baby in costume on Halloween. Take pictures of him and post it to social media. Take your costumed baby to a relative's Halloween party and pass him around. Just don't use your baby as a poor excuse to score candy because everyone will see right through you. Babies can't trick-or-treat.

Plumbing fixtures

Plumbing fixtures

No one updates their kitchen only to add a standard faucet. Faucet selections are just as varied as countertop selections, and they can make just as much of an impact in a space. A more decorative faucet starts at around $200, but they can run several hundred more depending on what they are made out of and where you purchase them. It may not seem like a huge amount in the context of a renovation, but those smaller purchases do add up quickly.

Tiled backsplashes add a custom and finished look to any kitchen or bathroom. There are endless options when it comes to tiles and design, and the price can vary greatly. Depending on the size of your kitchen and the tile used, a backsplash can run anywhere from around $500 to several thousand dollars. In a large kitchen, a custom tile backsplash could easily cost around $3,000, and that only includes the cost of materials.

What they actually cost

Backsplash tiles

White subway tile (Lowe's, $5 per square foot); Basket weave tile (Lowe's, $11 per square foot)

Some other items to consider include window treatments, art, decorative accessories and accent furniture. You may have to prioritize some items and add to your room as time goes on to complete the look without blowing your budget.

5 Fun facts about Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis' baby girl

$

She will be gorgeous

Let's get the most obvious out of the way first. With an exotic-looking mother and a handsome, all-American looking dad, how can baby Kunis-Kutcher not be gorgeous?

Mila Kunis didn't want to marry before Ashton Kutcher

She will have a normal name

This couple has always come across as grounded and down-to-earth — the two hilarious friends you would make sure to invite when you head out for a beer on Friday night. We don't see any attention-getting, f'd up, made-up names coming from these two. We don't anticipate their new babe will be named after a fruit, or a compass direction or a large dangerous animal.

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher welcome a baby girl — Did they name her Finn?

She will know the value of hard work

Remember when Kutcher took to the podium at the Teen Choice Awards and told an audience of kids, "Opportunity looks a lot like hard work." He went on to say that the sexiest thing in the world is being smart, thoughtful and generous. We doubt this baby girl will grow up, pull a Miley Cyrus and go about sexy all wrong.

We may not know much about the newest addition to the Kutcher-Kunis household, but we know after listening to Kutcher's passionate speech that he will be a great dad.

She will be funny

This is probably as obvious as saying that this couple's baby is gorgeous, but how can she also not be funny? Her parents have performed comedy for much of their careers, and in every picture we see them in they are either laughing or smiling. We figured out Kunis is genuinely funny when she did an interview with BBC Radio's Chris Stark, and she accepted his invitation to go to the pub and a football game. In the interview, she wants to keep chatting it up with Stark instead of talk about the movie she's supposed to be promoting.

She will be a tomboy

Momma Mila is known for being one of the boys, which comes to her easily because she grew up as a tomboy. In an interview with Static, she revealed, "Yes, I have an older brother, he's six years older than me, so when I was like three, four, five, little, my parents would always be like, 'Go play with Mike,' and they were like, 'Go take your little sister.' I grew up in a small town in Ukraine, where kids went and played in the neighborhood all day long. You got kicked out of the house, and you ran around for eight, nine hours, and you came back completely scraped up and bloody and starving. Your parents fed you, washed you and put you to bed.

"You didn't watch TV, you didn't play video games. There were more boys in the neighborhood than there were girls, and I idolized my brother to no end, so for sure I was a tomboy. I could climb the tallest tree with the best of them. I did not know I was a girl until I started liking boys. Like when I developed a crush on my brother's friend, when I was like, eight let's say, and I was like, 'He's cute.' My brother was like, I think that's when his whole world crumbled, when his little sister was all of a sudden asking, 'Who's that guy?' And he was like, uh-uh. So it was very much the other direction."

While we may not know a whole lot about the newest addition to the Kutcher-Kunis family, we know this baby girl is lucky to have smart, funny and caring people as parents.

Think Steve Aoki's Neon Future is too short? Here's what he had to say

DJ Steve Aoki talks new album and tour

Before getting into his music, SheKnows had to know his secret to his nonstop lifestyle. It's even earned him the Guinness title as the most-traveled musician in one year with 161 shows in 41 different countries. After a brief chuckle, he says, "I think it's just a matter of adaptation... When you stop and go, that's even harder. I'd rather just be on the go and then figure out how to adapt the life that I need to be able to achieve the things that I'm doing."

It's that consistent work schedule that has helped him create his new album Neon Future (Part 1), which reads like a Top 40 programmer's wet dream. It boasts collaborations with will.i.am, Bonnie McKee and Fallout Boy. Even though it includes a glorious array of guests, some reviewers claimed the set fell short of expectations with only 10 tracks. Aoki derailed the criticism with one very good explanation.

"I wrote all the songs on at the same time. I had over 20 songs," he explains. "It just doesn't make sense to do an 18-song album. It's better to split it up and give each song its own life, so you don't have to compete so much."

Neon Future (Part 2) will surely be a treat for Aoki fans with another batch of collaborations, including Linkin Park and Nervo. However, it's the collaboration with Walk Off the Earth that Aoki says might be the game-changer. "It's going to show another side of my music that people will not expect at all," he says.

How I felt listening to Calvin Harris' new song 'Blame' (GIFs)

Before his days in front of EDM thresholds like Tomorrowland and Electronic Daisy Carnival, Aoki was just your average college student majoring in women's studies. One of the department's only two males, to be specific. "I was like 'F*** it. I might be one of the only two guys in this whole department, but I'm going to do it,'" he recalls. As for his take on the current surge in feminist discussion, Aoki says: "Whenever I see anyone that stands up and really takes a lot of criticism for something like that, it means a lot to me."

Exclusive interview: DJ Steve Aoki talks guest role on Arrow

Aside from his genuine interest in his professor's teachings, Aoki's mom, Chizuru Kobayashi, might have also played a strong role in his reasons for wanting feminist teachings in college. Asked what his mom thinks of his hectic DJ lifestyle, he says, "I think she's really proud. In the very beginning, there was all these things. I was just like any other unknown DJ trying to make something out of nothing."

9 Critical things we learned from Reddit's AMA on Ebola

$
0
0

A group of vetted scientists took to Reddit to answer all of your questions about an Ebola outbreak in the United States. While Reddit generally isn't the first place we go to for medical information (although their sub-Reddit on lighting farts on fire was very illuminating), for this AMA, only verified scientists in relevant fields were allowed to answer. Here's what you need to know:

1. Our medical infrastructure is better

Thanks to a stronger medical infrastructure, more personnel, better supplies and a greater knowledge base, the type of wildfire spread we've seen in Africa is not likely to happen in the U.S. "At the moment in the USA, we can out-doctor Ebola faster than it can infect new hosts," explains one epidemiologist.

2. But we still have one overlooked concern

One overlooked concern that could be a major problem in the U.S., says the epidemiologist, is how to dispose of infected waste. Ebola patients produce about 60 pounds of contaminated waste, including blood, feces, vomit and any items they come into contact with while sick. "In order to be certain the contamination threat is dealt with, everything has to be thoroughly incinerated," he/she says. "This gets expensive very quickly, and any failure to decontaminate increases the risk of the virus being propagated from the improperly sterilized waste. This is already an issue in West Africa, and is potentially the most difficult to cope with part of an infection in a place like the USA. All of that personal protective gear has to go somewhere, and it represents a red-hot source of potential contamination, if mistakes are made."

3. The U.S. outbreak could mock the Nigeria outbreak

One graduate student studying epidemiology and pathology comments that, "Nigeria is an excellent example of what might happen here in the U.S. They have a solid medical infrastructure, and the cases in Nigeria arrived in the cities out of endemic areas. They were quarantined, their contacts were quarantined, and the spread there has been halted."

This is only a little comforting because it implies that the disease will infect more people, even if we can control it more effectively. He does say, however, "This case in DFW will not have the same opportunity to amplify that the Sierra Leone/Liberia/Guinea infections had."

4. Americans' immune systems are critical

The parts of Africa that have been hit hardest by Ebola are some of the poorest parts of the world. Because of more readily available food and health care, our baseline health is better, giving us stronger immune systems to fight the illness, according to the epidemiologist. Cultural differences also come into play as Americans typically do not handle our own dead (especially if they died of an infectious disease) and have a greater trust in medical authority than many rural Africans. In addition, we are able to spread accurate information faster and get sick people to the resources they need. (None of which is to slam the African people or governments of the afflicted nations. They're doing an admirable and often heroic job of trying to contain the disease. The disparity in resources unfortunately means a wide disparity in treatment.)

5. Because despite rumors, there is still no cure

Despite widespread news stories of possible vaccines, treatments using the blood of Ebola survivors and anti-viral therapies, we still don't have a sure antidote. Treatment now still consists of supporting the body while it fights off the infection. Ebola mortality rates vary depending on the strain, but this current outbreak is said to be on the more deadly end of the spectrum.

6. Ebola can only survive in humans

A microbiologist points out that as far as we know the U.S. does not have a "reservoir" of the disease, meaning a place or animal where the virus survives outside of humans. This means we can only catch it from another infected person and then only through contact with bodily fluids. It does not spread through sneezing, coughing or breathing. Plus, people are only contagious when they're showing symptoms of the virus.

7. Ebola might survive in water and sewers, but not for long

A professor of biophysics and microbiology confirmed that it cannot and will not spread through sewer systems. "Enveloped viruses like Ebola are not hardy enough to survive in the sewer system. In addition to their fragility, there is a tremendous dilution factor. The available evidence supports the idea that infection is only by direct contact with body fluids of an infected person."

Another scientist answers a concern about septic systems saying Ebola isn't "THAT receptive to the environment," but it wouldn't survive long in lakes or septic tanks and he/she stands firm that Ebola can only be contracted through direct contact with bodily fluids.

8. Fighting Ebola means going Sherlock Holmes on its a**

A professor of biophysics and microbiology explains that the best prevention is an effective quarantine and to do that we need to be adept at not only identifying the sick people but also anyone with whom they had contact with during the period they were contagious and isolate them as well. This is why for anyone who isn't sick, limiting travel is currently the best protection. This procedure is known as contact tracing and it's nearly impossible to do in Africa.

9. Ebola can be misdiagnosed

"Early symptoms are extremely non-specific so we have to go on patient history," says a health care scientist. "Fever, muscle aches, headaches, sometimes a sore throat are the symptoms for so many different conditions, e.g., malaria, cholera. Even when you progress to diarrhea you're not going to jump to Ebola or a hemorrhagic fever unless you know the patient's history." Right now, travel to or contact with someone from West Africa is the number one question.

Teens can't get enough of one-size retailer bent on destroying body image

The clothes are cute and affordable. But dig a little deeper into "mean girl" retailer Brandy Melville, and you'll see that large sizes are nowhere to be found. Refinery 29 reports that the brand's clothing is available only in small sizes, such as extra small, small or one size. Teen fans of the dark horse brand have voiced their concern of not being able to fit into clothing.

I don't have a teen daughter, but I was a teen daughter not so long ago. I was also a teen girl with a raging eating disorder, a combination of anorexia and bulimia spurred on by uncontrollable anxiety from my parents' divorce. I remember back then that it was a source of pride for me to fit into the smallest clothing size in the store. I felt safe and in control. I felt like I had accomplished something. If Brandy Melville had existed in the '90s, I would have been in eating disorder heaven.

That is not to say that any girl who wears a small size has an eating disorder. There are plenty of teen girls who wear smalls. There are plenty of grown petite women. But a teen-friendly retailer that does not offer a large size sends a blatant message: If you don't look like us, we won't accept you.

Brandy Melville's clothing is adorable, and it's no wonder that teen girls can't get enough of it. But for every follower the brand gains on social media in its underground marketing groundswell, another teen girl has bought into these standards of an unrealistic body image.

The Brandy Melville brand has become an Instagram superstar with more than two million followers. All of the models look happy, whimsical and very, very thin. This is who teen girls want to be. And they're welcome to sit at Brandy's lunch table — and shop at her stores — as long as they can fit into her one-size clothing.

Prince William gets serious about baby George's privacy

Little Prince George has been photographed multiple times on private outings with his nanny, and the actions of the photographers have become so alarming that Will and Kate are putting the royal foot down.

A senior source told The London Evening Standard, "Just like any parent, the Duke and Duchess want Prince George to have the freedom to safely experience normal childhood activities, like going to the park and playing with other children, without the threat of harassment or being placed under surveillance."

"One of the individuals has already been spoken to by protection officers about his behavior in respect of members of the Royal Family on previous occasions over a number of years."

Insiders told the Standard that two paps in particular have raised the ire of the royals, and incidents have included confrontations at Battersea Park, outside of Buckingham Palace and near the family home at Kensington Palace.

Duchess Kate cancels another appearance over pregnancy ills

A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge confirmed the legal action today, stating, "The Duke and Duchess have taken legal steps to ask that an individual ceases harassing and following both Prince George and his nanny as they go about their ordinary daily lives."

"An incident last week has prompted Their Royal Highnesses to seek reasonable assurances from the individual about his behavior. The individual was spotted at a central London Park in the vicinity of Prince George, who was removed from the park immediately."

And the most terrifying line of the statement:

"There is reason to suspect that the individual may been placing Prince George under surveillance and monitoring his daily routines for a period of time."

"No parent would tolerate the suspicion of someone pursuing and harassing their child and carer whilst their child is playing in a public park or going about their daily activities."

As Kate eases into her pregnancy with royal baby no. 2, it's understandable that security is at the front of their minds.

Introducing Hatch: Helping girls find a voice of their own

Our children are growing up with an unprecedented amount of access to media. The sheer volume of online activity, coupled with television, movies and magazines, exposes our girls to messages every day that directly impact how they view the world around them — and themselves. Media and advertising are very powerful tools, capable of directly influencing a girl's problem-solving abilities, self-esteem, body image and how she achieves her goals in life. Girls' confidence levels have been shown to drop in their preteen years, when they start basing their personal self-worth on how they look and how much they weigh. The messages our daughters receive from the media make it difficult for them to make the transition to adulthood, and in advertising, women are overly concerned with the subjects of body weight, fashion, appearance and dating. The fact that our girls are subjected to so much advertising directed to how they look rather than who they are is why Hatch was created.

Gender roles

Gender roles

Hatch grew from a workshop for teen and tween girls on digital storytelling and media literacy, led by SheKnows in August 2014. Described as "content for grown-ups, made by kids on a mission," the program is multifaceted, comprised of both educational components for kids and parents as well as advertising offerings for brands. Ultimately Hatch empowers kids aged 7 to 16 to use media and technology to produce content that is responsible and that expresses their unique points of view in productive and positive ways. Hatch gives girls the tools they need to create inspiring and thoughtful digital content, and their parents the resources to engage their kids in discussions about internet safety and social media's impact on self-esteem.

We can make a difference in how our girls view themselves and how they comprehend advertising and media. We can change the messages girls are inundated with and give them the tools to combat any information that makes them feel they are worth less because of their gender or appearance. Hatch believes every girl has the ability to combat stereotypes, question the media and explore ways to use technology to have their points of view heard in the world. Hatch knows that parents can directly influence how their daughters absorb media and how this media affects their self-worth, and aims to give parents and caregivers the tools to make their daughters discerning consumers of the messages they receive.

Our girls are smart, brave, inquisitive and powerful. Hatch is here to reinforce this message.

Dracula's 'real dungeon' supposedly found, but something seems fishy

Archeologists have just revealed the fascinating discovery of Vlad the Impaler's real-life dungeon in Turkey. Underneath the ancient Tokat castle, where the Ottomans wisely locked up the dangerous Count Dracula in the 1400s, scientists found a secret tunnel leading to two hidden dungeons. One of them likely belonged to Vlad.

It's so eerie that this discovery was made just as the first-ever vampire origin story, Dracula Untold, is set to release next week. The timing of this discovery has us wondering if the ghost of Vlad is trying to send us a message.

Vlad was famous for taking sadistic pleasure in torturing his enemies before impaling them on sharp iron posts. He is said to have relished his victim's blood, even dipping his bread in it and eating it.

Is Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles coming to the big screen?

In the above photo, Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister from Game of Thrones), Sarah Gadon (The Amazing Spider-Man) and Luke Evans (Bard in The Hobbit) pose on the red carpet at the Dracula Untold premier in England.

The new Hobbit trailer literally brought me to tears and here's why

But the filmmakers hope to show two sides of Vlad. Evans, who plays the title character, said this in a recent interview, "As much as you know about the dark side of Vlad, we wanted the audience to see the passionate, loving, vibrant side of him."

Passionate and loving? OK, well, Luke Evans is totally sexy and we love him in the dragon-themed leather outfit, so we'll go with it. We could certainly imagine spending some time with him in the newly discovered dungeon, assuming he was into the Fifty Shades of Grey kind of stuff.

5 Reasons the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer killed our lady boner

So, maybe the message Vlad's ghost is trying to send has something to do with the fact that he wasn't entirely bad? That maybe he did have a passionate, loving side to him and he wants the world to know that since Hollywood has made a mockery of him in its myriad of vampire movies. We suppose we'll have to see Dracula Untold to find out.

Dracula Untold impales audiences Oct. 10.

Moby Dick

Moby Dick

Reading Moby Dick in my early 20s, and once again in my late 20s, was a revelatory experience for me. For many reasons, it's a book that I think about often. Here's the line I've been considering lately: "Whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off — then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can." – Chris Schluep

QUIZ: How well do you know your classic novels?

King Lear

King Lear

Shakespeare and high school kind of go hand-in-hand. I remember reading Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, and a few others. But my most rewarding experiences with the bard have been when I've sat down on my own and cracked open a play or even one of his sonnets. Yes, you have to be in the right mood for something like this [King Lear] — but as a friend of mine recently commented, "It's been 500 years and no one has figured out yet how to do it better." – Chris Schluep

Crime and Punishment

Crime and Punishment

I shied away from Crime and Punishment in high school because it was sooooo long and seemingly complicated — but when I spent a summer abroad in college, I was desperate for something long and complicated and... in English. Never mind that C&P is, of course, a Russian novel; the English-language version — which I found in a used book store – meant I could have periods of respite from Spanish conversation with my non-English-speaking hosts and friends. – Sara Nelson

Fahrenheit 451

Fahrenheit 451

After graduating, I went on a time-consuming, extracurricular tear on some classics that apparently weren't classic enough for my high school: Twain, Hemingway, Faulkner, etc. But best of all was Bradbury, and of all his indispensable books, Fahrenheit 451 appealed most to my Cold War brain. – Jon Foro

8 Books about bullying all kids should read before going to high school

The Grapes of Wrath

Grapes of Wrath

I took the long way around to The Grapes of Wrath: starting with Edward Abbey’s Desert Solitaire, I worked through Wallace Stegner and other giants of Western lit, eventually to Timothy Egan's Dust Bowl classic, The Worst Hard Time. Steinbeck was the logical end of this journey, humanizing much of the suffering that formed the West, as well as the nation. – Jon Foro

A Separate Peace

A Separate Peace

As the father of two teen boys, I've become something of an expert on the dark side of adolescence. Like Lord of the Flies and other sinister takes on coming of age, Knowles explores that fine and sometimes dangerous line between growing up on your own terms — or on someone else's. – Neal Thompson

Brave New World

Brave New World

I think I might've wrongly assumed that since I'd read 1984 I could skip Huxley’s take on a dystopian utopia. What was so remarkable about reading it years after high school was seeing how frighteningly prescient Huxley was in predicting the weirdness of life in a future society — like ours. – Neal Thompson

Lord of the Flies

The Lord of the Flies

Maybe it was my mom's screams at my brother and me ("You're just like Lord of the Flies, you two!") that kept me away from this classic for so long. But thank god I finally discovered the book that explained the madness of boyhood to me, and so much more. Sorry, Ma! – Neal Thompson

To Kill a Mockingbird

To Kill a Mockingbird

I somehow lumped this in with some of the other books boring me to death in high school (Tess of the d'Urbervilles, anyone?) but when I read it as an adult I understood why so many people consider this their favorite novel. To Kill a Mockingbird is everything you need to know about innocence lost, injustice, kindness and love. You can't help but be changed by it. – Seira Wilson

16 YA books everyone will be reading this fall

Catch-22

Catch-22

I had no idea that a story of war could be serious and funny at the same time until I read Catch-22. Joseph Heller introduced me to the brilliance of satire and ingrained in me the utter impossibility of truly "winning" a conflict of politics and belief, when human life is the currency being wagered. – Seira Wilson

Jessa Duggar compares abortion to the Holocaust

$

Yes, you did just read this. Jessa Duggar, who has made recent headlines because she got engaged, posted a lengthy diatribe on her Instagram account about her recent visit to the museum, where she first somehow compares the Holocaust to evolution (it's eugenics, Jessa, and you think evolution is garbage anyway, right?), and then she talks about her pro-life beliefs and how it's all the same.

Duggar abortion comments

Duggar abortion comments

Despite the incorrect comments about evolution, it honestly sounds OK there toward the end: "May we never sit idly by and allow such an atrocity to happen again. Not this generation." Because yes, of course. But then we get to the end and the #ProLife hashtag. Did she seriously just compare the Holocaust to abortion? Yes, yes she did.

I have read many books on the Holocaust, and it's horrifying. You cannot read the accounts and see the photos of what went on and not be heartbroken. And I don't understand how someone can visit a museum dedicated to the memory of millions of innocent people who were tortured, starved and slaughtered, and think, "I'll use this as an abortion talking point because it's the same thing. Everyone will love that."

It's no secret that I'm no fan of the Duggar clan and their mega-conservative ways. Since the couple had scads of children and took over our televisions, they have continued to maintain a hold on the public consciousness by continuing to add on to their family tree and to be politically incorrect asshats. The matriarch recently raised my ire by claiming that transgender women were really pedophiles in disguise because they want to prey on our daughters. And it's obvious that their 19 apples don't fall too far from their solidly set tree, as Jessa is proving.

Jessa Duggar comes across as completely clueless, and I can't say I'm not surprised after she's been raised by her parents. As one commenter on her Instagram photo points out, "this is why the world laughs at americans.. because of idiots like this." I'm dreading what the other kids will come up with as they grow and get platforms of their own. As a public figure, her words do carry a lot of weight. It's sad that these are the words she's choosing to use.
