Save major dough with this all-natural DIY liquid foundation

0
0

To make sure this formula is all-natural, use a pure mineral foundation such as BareMinerals or Pur Minerals, as they are made up of naturally occurring minerals mined from the earth like zinc oxide, iron oxide, titanium dioxide, mica and ultramarine. Then ground up into fine particles and used to make powders and foundations. These minerals provide not only pigment, but also sun protection and anti-inflammatory effects.

As for your moisturizer, look for one that is made from organic and natural ingredients. One of my favorites is Burt's Bee's Radiance Day Cream. This foundation formula will really work with any moisturizer, but make sure the loose foundation you use is a mineral formula so the pigments will blend evenly to act like a true liquid foundation.

Materials and tools:

All natural homemade liquid foundation: Materials

  • Mineral powder foundation
  • Your favorite moisturizer
  • A mixing brush or spoon
  • A small container

Directions:

Step 1:

All natural homemade liquid foundation Step 1

Add a teaspoon of mineral foundation to a teaspoon of your favorite moisturizer. This will create a foundation with medium coverage. If you're looking to create a liquid foundation with lighter coverage, simply use more moisturizer, and if you're looking to create a concealer or liquid foundation with more coverage, simply add a little more mineral powder. You can also customize your shade by using a mixture of different shades of mineral foundation.

Step 2:

All natural homemade liquid foundation Step 2

With your mixing brush, gently mix the 2 ingredients together for a few minutes to create a creamy foundation.

Step 3:

All natural homemade liquid foundation Step 3

Place your new liquid foundation in a small plastic container. Keep in mind that because there are no preservatives you'll have to use your liquid foundation within a few days of making it.

Step 4:

Apply your newly made liquid foundation with a foundation sponge or foundation brush as you would regularly.

#RIPBilly school fight goes viral, Twitter goes bananas analyzing it

RIP Billy vine

RIP Billy vine

#RIPBilly is trending on Twitter and Vine thanks to a series of short videos that depict two kids, who appear to be older middle school students or high school students, getting into an altercation in a classroom. One, dubbed Billy, instigates the violence by throwing what looks like an egg or a ball of paper. The apparent victim of the projectile (as my physics teacher used to say when fights broke out) calmly walks up and punches Billy in the face, sending him to the ground. Shockingly the teacher seems to remain uninterested throughout the incident, sitting at his desk and failing to discourage any of the fighting.

Why didn't the teacher do anything? From the extremely limited context, it seems like Billy was instigating a fight. He doesn't appear to be the victim of random bullying. But no matter how much of a jerk a kid is being, it's a teacher's responsibility to curb violence in the classroom. If we talk about anything, I think it should be the role of teachers and administrators. Should a teacher be expected to step in between kids who are the size of adults? Is it safer to watch and do nothing?

Why are we seeing this video in the first place? Whether or not you like it, kids frequently upload videos of fights. They're usually shared because people think they're funny. As someone who attended a middle school where a young girl was raped by two students and other students were frequently picked up by ambulances after brutal fights, I have a hard time understanding how kids and adults get worked up in a delighted frenzy over violence. But here we are in 2014. Almost everyone has the ability to record and share videos, and fights or worse can go viral in minutes. To kids, there's glory to be had in that.

As awful as the short video is, it's important to follow the conversations surrounding it. The circumstances of the fight have sparked racial debates on Twitter as well as debates over what we share on social media and why. We may never know the exact circumstances surrounding #RIPBilly, but we can't afford to pretend it happened in a vacuum or that our kids aren't exposed to violence even when it didn't happen in their classrooms.

I also decided we needed a little something extra to go with it and whipped up some Gruyère grilled cheese sandwiches using sourdough bread. This really hit the spot and is the perfect meal for cooler weather or whenever you want something warm and comforting.

Olympic icon Michael Phelps charged with DUI

Phelps, who has won a whopping 22 medals for his prowess in swimming, was pulled over for speeding by police in his white Land Rover. Cops claim he was doing 84 mph in a 45 mph zone and was weaving across the double yellow line through the Fort McHenry Tunnel on northbound Interstate 95 in Maryland.

They then issued a field sobriety test, which was a big fat fail.

"Mr. Phelps was identified as the driver by his driver's license and appeared to be under the influence. He was unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests," a spokesperson for Maryland Transportation Authority told ABC.

The athlete was arrested and charged with DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines. He was later released.

Michael Phelps parties in Vegas

But this is not the first time Phelps has been busted driving drunk. In 2004 he was arrested after blowing a stop sign. He pleaded guilty to driving while impaired and was fined $250 and served 18 months' probation. He later told Matt Lauer it was an "isolated incident."

In 2009, the swimmer further courted controversy when a photo surfaced allegedly showing him smoking pot — a move that cost him his Kellogg's sponsorship and a three-month suspension from USA Swimming.

Phelps is the most decorated athlete in Olympic history. Of his 22 medals, a whopping 18 are gold — and eight of those are from his record-setting Beijing Games alone. This arrest may put a damper on his hopes for an Olympic comeback.

This tv ad makes us want to shake it like Zumba rockstars (VIDEO)

"I want to move like Shakira," I thought to myself as I gulped down my glass of merlot. "I can totally do that."

How hard could it really be? I perfected my jazz hands during years of dance class as a child. I also power through several difficult workouts a week. I got this.

So, I hit up a class at my gym the next day… and I lasted all of 15 minutes. I looked like a baby giraffe just learning to stand up: I just couldn't get the movements down and once I did, they changed. I made a hasty exit to the comfort of the treadmill with a seriously bruised ego.

I'm a Zumba failure. Or, so I thought until I came across this Zumba commercial that coincides with the launch of their new mantra: "Let It Move You." The whole point of the campaign is to show that Zumba is more about letting your body and the music move you, choreography be damned.

Zumba commercial

Zumba commercial

"Everyone's heard of Zumba, but they're not totally sure what it is," William Gelner, chief creative officer for 180LA (the agency behind the new TV spot), told Creativity. "They figure it's a class where you do some sort of Latin or forbidden dance.... The one thing we've found to be so true about the brand is that it becomes so much fun. It's a blast."

The commercial certainly demonstrates that, showing people of vary backgrounds grooving to Diplo. The spot is set to launch today, so don't be surprised when your body involuntary breaks out into a Zumba move in your living room.

The video's even inspired me to take up the dance-based workout again — though, I'll probably only do it when I'm alone… at least until I perfect all my sick dance moves.

Girl Crush: How Yael Cohen Braun is fighting the C-word with the F-word

0

On founding FCancer

In 2009, Cohen Braun's life turned upside down when her mom, Diane, was diagnosed with breast cancer. The moment shook Cohen Braun to the core, and she immediately threw herself into helping her mother the best way she knew how — which, in Cohen Braun's case, meant being very involved in her mom's treatment and doing research. Tons of it.

But it was a far simpler gesture that would catapult Cohen Braun and her mother down a path toward helping countless others with cancer.

How Kathy Bates and six other stars beat breast cancer's ass

"In taking care of Mom and going through the process, we got her a shirt made that said 'F*** cancer.' Plain and simple," Cohen Braun said. "And it was meant to be something she wore at home. My mom is not the type of woman to say the word, never mind wear it, but it was obviously very cathartic for her, and she wore it everywhere."

The responses Diane got were overwhelming. "It was huge, it was high fives, it was wanting to hear her story, wanting to tell their story. Strangers would have this simultaneously brave and vulnerable response. It was so beautiful," said Cohen Braun.

Those responses, then, spurred a movement. "I knew that this was a sentiment that obviously resonated far beyond our family and wanted to do some good with it."

Thus, FCancer was born.

On growing and adapting

The charity quickly took root in the cancer community, resonating with those who were battling the disease and particularly with the younger generation affected by it. "It was shocking to me that nobody was talking to our generation about cancer, because ultimately our parents are in the highest risk demographic," said Cohen Braun, "and we're caring for them."

So, while creating a charity and becoming an entrepreneur at 22 might seem daunting, Cohen Braun considers it a natural next step for her generation.

"There's been this fundamental shift with the exponential growth and technology and the ability to access information," she said. "We teach our parents more than any generation has, and so it only made sense to me that we harness that growth and that knowledge and that arrogance and taught our parents something that actually mattered."

GMA's Joan Lunden goes wigless for cover photo

Over the last five years, FCancer has grown seemingly exponentially. The charity started with a heavy focus on early detection and then, says Cohen Braun, they added dimension as they matured and got to know the community's needs.

"We layered on some other verticals and preventions, as well as communication or psycho-social support," Cohen Braun explained. "So, how do you tell your mom you have cancer? How do you support your best friend who has cancer? What is the best of the worst thing someone has said to you? The questions that you wouldn't even really know to ask."

As could be expected, the last five years haven't been without struggle. In fact, Cohen Braun notes, there have been "a lot of challenges." Challenges associated with being a young female, challenges associated with using an expletive in the company name.

"There were people who had asked, 'Have you ever considered changing your name to something that's more, um, media-friendly or acceptable?' And the answer was always really easy. F*** no," Cohen Braun said.

"Our name is our power. It's this visceral, emotional response. It draws people to us. And I think we're not for everybody, and that's OK. We encourage people to find the cancer community — the cancer family — that's right for them. And if it's not us, that's great... but the people we do resonate with? We're their home during a really difficult time, and we're not going to change that."

Ultimately, the company's "unbelievable" mentors and advisers helped keep FCancer on point (and helped Cohen Braun keep her sanity along the way).

On creating the StandWith app

As if an incredibly successful and altruistic startup wasn't enough to keep a 20-something gal busy and in good karma for life, Cohen Braun also just launched a caregiver app called StandWith to point well-meaning family and friends of patients in the right direction.

"The first question everyone always asks is 'How can I help?' and obviously as a patient and a caregiver, you need a lot of help, but you don't often know how to ask for it or who specifically to ask," said Cohen Braun.

A basic management platform, StandWith allows patients to update their loved ones with information about what is needed and when it is needed.

"You get 15 bouquets of flowers and seven casseroles on the same day, and ultimately you just really need someone to walk the dog or come sit with you during chemo," Cohen Braun said of the free app.

Between her mother's diagnosis, FCancer and StandWith, the last five years have been a learning experience for Cohen Braun. But perhaps the most surprising thing she's taken away from the experience is how everyone is expected to have a very specific experience.

Electronic skin being developed to better detect breast cancer

"People want you to say and do certain things," she said. "And that just didn't resonate with our family. That just didn't fit in. I think if you're fighting the fight of your life, you've got to feel and do whatever the hell is right and authentic for you."

Sorry, boys, Taylor Swift is happy being single

Confession: Why I'm not-so-secretly obsessed with Taylor Swift's love life

During a recent interview with British Vogue's November issue, the "Shake It Off" singer revealed that she is no longer looking for love and is instead embracing the single life.

"Dating or finding someone is the last thing on my mind, because I can't picture how it could work with the way my life is," Swift told the publication. "I don't know how a guy is supposed to walk next to his girlfriend when there are 20 men with cameras, and he can't protect his girlfriend because that's the life she chose. I just don't see how it could work, so I don't think about it, and I kind of run from it when it presents itself."

Taylor Swift says Lena Dunham educated her about feminism

"They think that they would want to get to know me, and maybe date me, but I don't think they want what comes with it," the beauty added.

Swift also graces the cover of the magazine, and she looks amazing in soft pastel colors and a gorgeous pale pink Miu Miu jacket shot by famed photographer Mario Testino. And although she may be comfortable in her skin now and know the direction she wants to go in with her music and her life, things were not always so black and white for the singer.

PHOTO: Taylor Swift is a walking meme of herself

"The one thing I wish these girls that come to my shows knew is that they are exactly where I was when I was a teenager. I had no idea who I was! I was going through all these phases. I was trying on different outfits and all these different personalities, trying to figure out what category I fit into, and which clique I would be accepted in. But if you just keep doing 'you,' and being who you are and doing what feels natural to you, maybe you won't find a place where you fit in for a very long time, but you eventually will," Swift said.

PHOTOS: How to host a spooktacular Halloween party

Follow these simple steps as inspiration for creating a simply chic party in your own home.

1. Choose a vibrant color palette or exciting theme. If you're using colors to set the scene, stick to a palette of three colors max. We used traditional pumpkin orange, white and black as tribute to the holiday's popular color combo, but don't be shy to try something unexpected like purples or greens. If you prefer your party revolve around your favorite Halloween flick, there are endless ideas for spooky elements as a tribute to The Birds or Batman! For an extra dash of fun, send invitations in advance that correspond to your palette or theme.

2. Get creative with decor! There is no better holiday to put a twist on items you already have at home. We displayed white branch-like candle holders as a subtle nod to an "eerie forest" and faux orange branches in a large copper vase. Basic linen napkins become festive when wrapped with inexpensive spider or bat rings, and mini pumpkins scattered throughout the table serve as a reminder Halloween is here.

3. Serve one signature cocktail. If possible, greet guests at the door with a smile and cocktail in hand to set a welcoming tone. Or, set up a self-serve bar including wine, liquors, garnishes and cocktail picks so guests can help themselves (And, bonus, this will free you up from refilling glasses all night.)

Jack o'lantern cocktail

  • 1 ounce bourbon
  • 1-1/2 ounces orange juice
  • 1/2 ounce bubbly (prosecco, Champagne, sparkling cider or ginger ale)
  • Orange wheel for garnish

Combine orange juice and bourbon in a cocktail shaker. Pour into a glass over ice. Top with bubbly and garnish with a large orange wheel.

4. Brew up stress-free recipes before guests arrive. Create a simple menu so you spend more time mingling and less time in the kitchen. Tasty appetizers like dips and meat/fruit/cheese plates or desserts like homemade popcorn and cupcakes (with a few pieces of candy corn to incorporate the holiday's most iconic treat) can be made ahead of time causing less stress during the party.

5. Send guests home with a memorable favor. Delicious treats can take less than two minutes each to make, but will remind guests of the great evening they had long after the party ends. Keep it simple by filling a mini glass jar with candy corn or purchase inexpensive sweet treats and tie a ribbon around them for guests to grab on their way out the door.

But don't be shy to brew up other new creative ideas of your own. After all, this is the holiday to go a little "batty."

Miles Teller bashes Divergent

Among the comments, Teller revealed to W magazine that he did not find his character, Peter, interesting and that he basically took the part for business reasons.

"I didn't have an interesting part," Teller explained, "and I'd taken the film for business reasons: It was the first movie I'd done that was going to have an international audience. I called my agent and said, 'This sucks.'"

However, Teller is now trying to clear up all the controversy that surrounded his comments.

VIDEO: Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley share first on-screen kiss!

During an interview with HuffPost Live on Tuesday, the The Spectacular Now actor explained that his interview with W magazine was not framed correctly.

"I think we talked on the phone for an hour, and if the conversation was transcribed I don't think it would have been framed the way it was framed," he said.

Teller then went on to explain what he meant by saying he took the film for business reasons, and it doesn't look like he meant it in a snotty way at all.

"I've been offered good money to do absolutely terrible scripts that I haven't done. I guess the business reasons for me [to join Divergent] — it was a smaller part acting wise — but it would give me an opportunity to be in a film that would be seen internationally," he explained.

"A big reason why I did the film was working with Shailene [Woodley] and a director [Neil Burger], who I had just seen his film Limitless, that I really enjoyed. So those were the business reasons," Teller continued.

Miles Teller in the running for Fantastic Four?

The actor also told W magazine that he felt "dead inside," but explained that the reason for those comments was that he was burned out after working on four films back to back.

"It's not that I was feeling dead inside — I'm not that poetic — I was just really burnt out is what it was," Teller confessed.

DIY bloody candles make a gory, fun Halloween prop

0
0

With Halloween just around the corner, it’s time to start getting into spooky Halloween crafting. Typically, my style for the haunt is more cute than gory, but my nephews are getting older and are totally into the creepy thing. My glittered monsters aren’t going to have the same impact on them as they did just two years ago.

We’re all about scary costumes and bloody this and that. So, in working up some creepy Halloween decor, I decided to make them bleeding candles. I mean, what’s creepier than that?

To make your own, you will need:

  • White pillar candles
  • Red candle in a glass pot
  • Long candle lighter
  • Eyedropper
Candle

I tested a lot of candles to see what would work well for 'bleeding.' This candle was $1 at Walmart and worked very well. I found that most taper candles are actually white in the middle, and very expensive candles don’t have quite as much color to them. I purchased a few votives in one of my favorite scents from a boutique brand and found that the drips were dark pink at best and very see-through. Not bloody at all.

I tried wax melts but found none with a rich enough color. They wound up being a bit transparent as well. Votives worked OK, but the little glass pots were the best for getting layers of different reds with the same candle.

Candle 2

Allow the candle to burn for a bit, making some liquid wax. Turn the candle on its side.

Candle 4

Collect the liquid wax with your eyedropper (these are usually sold near the eye medicines in pharmacies).

Starting around the wick of your white pillar candle, dribble the hot wax down. You may need to actually draw a line with the wet wax to get your drips started.

candle 6

Continue making drips all the way around the candle. Do 2-3 passes to get nice coverage.

Candle 7

The top of the candle will inevitably get lumpy. Use your lighter to melt the wax, increasing drips and evening out the top a bit.

In the next few passes, the candle will get lumpy again, which looks good in moderation. If you leave it alone in this step, however, it gets so bumpy as to become distracting.

Candle 8

For your next pass, turn the flame up to a higher setting. Place the fire against the wax along the wall of the jar to get it to melt. In the process you’ll also create soot up against the glass, which will help darken the red to a more burgundy color.

Tip your candle to the side to get access to the wax. If your soot is staying pretty well up against the glass, you can use the end of your eyedropper to give it a good stir.

Candle 9

Continue making passes around, increasing your drips. To have multiple drops in one drip, place the eyedropper at the top of the candle where the drip starts to veer off onto its own. Squeeze the tiniest amount of wax out, and it will run along the drip. Add a bit more to make the drip go down further if you wish. Gently remove the candle from your paper towels to keep the lower drips intact.

When your candles are first lit, the 'blood' will continue to seep down the sides, so be sure to have something beneath to catch the wax or place on something disposable. As the candles burn, they’ll burrow into the center of the pillars, and the red will remain on the outside.

These candles will rarely be lit but are more of a prop to be included in the decor. The end result costs very little money and takes so little time that it’s my favorite gory Halloween craft ever

Pregnant Carrie Underwood showed off her enviable legs and her growing baby bump as she performed at the 34th Annual Global Citizen Festival in Central Park on Sept. 27. The 31-year-old, who is expecting her first child with Mike Fisher, performed the R.E.M. hit "Everybody Hurts" in a black mini-dress paired with black booties.

Underwood recently said in an interview on the Today show that she is still getting used to the idea of being a mom.

"It's still kind of weird, to be honest," she confessed. "Sometimes I'll be with my husband, and it's like, 'I'm gonna be a mom. You're gonna be a dad. Is this real life?' But we're really excited."

Pregnant actress Rosamund Pike, who plays Ben Affleck’s wife Amy Dunne in the movie Gone Girl, showed off her baby bump in a black flowing maxi dress at the premiere of the anticipated movie.

The 35-year-old actress is expecting her second child in November with her boyfriend, Robie Uniacke. They are already parents to a 2-year-old son named Solo.

Reese Witherspoon, who is a producer of Gone Girl, shared this picture of the two at the premiere of the movie.

"#Premiere #GoneGirl #NYFF... As a producer of #GoneGirl and as an actress, I've got so much respect for #RosamundPike. Her performance will blow you away!" she captioned the photo.

With a new movie and a new baby, Pike has had quite the exciting year, and she recently mused over why so many women's careers seem to take off just as they have children.

"Is it because you are risking everything in your relationship and the risk-taker in you carries through into your professional life? You have less time to worry and overanalyze — maybe that's it," she told Glamour magazine.

"Or the huntress instinct to provide for your family is awoken, [Either way], with children you spend so much time re-experiencing the world as a child experiences it, and that has a nourishing effect on your imagination — in my job, imagination is key," she said.

"I can't even begin to explain just how excited we are for a new baby. We are so, so, so blessed as a family, and I'm speechless at the fact that we have the opportunity to bring a second bundle of joy into the world," she continued. "I absolutely cannot wait to see what life will be like as a mother to a toddler and a newborn, and I really can't wait to see Brooks as an older brother to Baby #2! I just know that he's going to be preciously protective. "When the baby gets here, it's not just one baby. I have two babies now. My husband and the baby — you have to take care of both," she said, of her husband Tim Witherspoon.

Rowland has been working out throughout her pregnancy (and even sharing pictures on her Instagram) and said she might have a hard time waiting the recommended six weeks after giving birth before she starts working out again.

One-Pot Wonder: Simple, comforting orecchiette with sausage and peppers

0
0

The word orecchiette comes from its shape which is small ears in Italian. The depression in the middle makes catching the sauce better thus, you get to have even tastier forkfuls of pasta. Because of this and its chewiness, orrecchiette is one of my favorite pasta shapes to use. Whenever I cook sausages, I tend to use orecchiette more than the other shapes because they taste so good together.

Orecchiette with sausages and peppers recipe

I often have leftover sausages. Whether they are grilled or baked, I always put them in a pasta dish the following day. Just remove the casing that holds them together, crumble, then sautè them in extra virgin olive oil. That way, you revive the flavors again and can add other ingredients like the bottled or grilled peppers that I used in this dish. It's really easy and you will be rewarded with a delicious dish afterwards.

Orecchiette with sausage and peppers recipe

Serves 2

Ingredients:

  • 7 ounces orecchiette
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
  • 2 cups cooked sausages, casings removed and coarsely chopped
  • 1-1/2 cups bottled grilled or roasted peppers, coarsely chopped
  • Salt
  • Ground pepper
  • Sprigs of lemon thyme or regular thyme

Directions:

  1. Over medium to high heat, bring a pot of water to a boil. When the water boils, add some salt then the orecchiette. Following the cooking time indicated in the packaging.
  2. Meantime, while waiting for the water for the pasta to boil, cook the sauce.
  3. Over medium heat, in a large saucepan with extra virgin olive oil, lightly toast the garlic and the sausages.
  4. Add the peppers. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for another 5-7 minutes.
  5. Turn off the fire and cover to keep it warm and wait for the orecchiette to cook. Turn on the fire again when the orecchiette is ready to be mixed with it.
  6. When the pasta is cooked, turn on the fire to medium then add them to the saucepan with the sausages and peppers.
  7. Garnish with the lemon thyme and drizzle some fresh extra virgin olive oil.
  8. Serve while hot.

Andrew W.K. a modern-day Mr. Rogers in new kids' show

Getting to talk to Andrew W.K. about his new kid-friendly television series, Meet Me at the Reck, I was pretty much geeking out and fan-girling all over the place. Not only is Andrew an amazingly talented rock star, but the guy just exudes this utter joy when answering questions — and I can pretty much blame his upbringing for this. When I asked him how he goes seamlessly from rock star to motivational speaker to children's TV host, he conveyed that ever since he can remember, his main goal in life was to try to make people happy and to be as positive as possible. And he said it was his mom who inspired him in this regard.

"My mom always told me that I could do anything, and no matter what I did, it would turn out great. She instilled in me this belief that nothing was impossible."

Growing up, Andrew said he had his own challenges in feeling alienated, and he was even bullied at times, so when he was older, creating a sense of belonging and unity — even for bullies — turned into a goal. As Andrew put it, "Everyone is invited to the party." This belief system shines through in his new show, which features Andrew and a group of kids known as The Reckers, who celebrate the importance of using imagination.

Andrew W.K. Kid's show

Andrew W.K. Kid's show

One of the sweetest things Andrew said in our talk was that growing up, he always had this sense of "awe and wonder" about the world, and I think most parents can agree this is something we want our own kids to feel. Shows like Meet Me at the Reck celebrate childhood and how kids use their imaginations and senses of wonder to relate to the world around them, without the negative messages we all tend to get from our brains when we reach adulthood — the rational and usually boring parts of our brains that tell us to attend to business, focus on serious things and that the world is mundane and things are to be expected. Meet Me at the Reck is all about building, creating and seeing where your mind takes you, and is happily reminiscent of the same sense of joy Fred Rogers gave us growing up, just with new neighbors like Stampylonghead. I'm so excited about this new show, and I love how excited Andrew is about it. Kids are such awesome little people, and I love how Andrew recognizes and honors that and shares their joy in just being kids.

The six episodes will premiere on Maker TV's kids channel Cartoonium starting Oct. 4.

Criminal Minds' A.J. Cook vows Season 10 is a total "mind frick"

0

On the shockers in store for this season

One glance at the cast and crew's behind-the-scenes photos for the new season reveals a parade of the creepy and macabre: giant cockroaches, a human skull, a severed leg.

"I think all I have to say is welcome to Season 10!" Cook said, laughing. "In Season 10, it's go big or go home. I'm really loving this season because it just feels more like these really great psychological thriller mini-movies that they're making every week."

Criminal Minds finale: What's in store?

And while fans have come to expect suspense and chilling story lines from the show, Cook teases that this season they've upped the ante.

"It's like a mind frick, you know what I mean? It totally messes with your head. It's gonna be creepy and scary, but people love that — people like to curl up and watch it," she explained.

So although Cook concedes that some viewers may prefer to DVR it and watch it the next day in the comfort of the morning light, she promises the show isn't too graphic.

"It's not overly gruesome, because when we show that stuff it's for a split second, if at all. I think we use a lot of the Hitchcock effect — we talk about it, and what you're going to think up in your mind is far worse than anything we can actually show on the screen."

During this season, the show will plumb deeper into J.J.'s psyche, too, as she struggles to come to terms with the "whirlwind" she's experienced since returning to the BAU and the unresolved issues lingering from her departure.

On J.J.'s headspace coming into Season 10

"J.J. is a typical woman," Cook said. "We're so good at internalizing everything and pushing it down and pushing it down and pushing it down. But the hard thing about that is we can only do it for so long. So, yeah, I think we're going to maybe see her have to come to terms with everything eventually."

Still, Cook remains in awe of her character's resilience. J.J. has held her own through seeing team members lose their lives, nearly losing her own, seeing her family threatened and watching her best friends get brutalized.

"I don't know how J.J. does it, honestly. It's crazy! That's what I love about her, though. She's such a busy professional/mom/caretaker/ass-kicker. She's just the all-around woman," said Cook, cautioning, "but she's human. And I think we're going to see that side more in Season 10. You can only stretch yourself so thin, and I think that's a valuable lesson for everyone to learn."

J.J. can breathe a little easier, though, in the knowledge that while J.J. deals with more of the emotional stuff, we likely won't have to go through any gut-wrenching near-death experiences for Cook's character... at least for a few episodes.

"I think that would be unfair to everyone," Cook said, laughing. "We need to keep J.J. out of harm's way for a little bit!"

On a few very special costars

Actually, one of the biggest shockers for Cook and the rest of the cast this season had little to do with the inherent danger of being part of the BAU but, rather, with a new addition to the team. "I think the really big deal about Season 10 is that we've got Jennifer Love Hewitt joining the cast," Cook shared.

"It's been so great! We were all just shocked when we heard. Like, 'What? Jennifer Love Hewitt wants to come play with us? OK... but she's, like, a star!'"

Jennifer Love Hewitt joins new season of Criminal Minds

The casting has proven a great fit, said Cook, who gushed that — in addition to being super-nice — Love Hewitt is the consummate professional. "I really like her character," Cook said. "She's kind of this scrappy little thing. It's going to be a fun character for her to play, and unlike anything she's every really played before."

But as excited as she is about Love Hewitt joining the ensemble, Cook admittedly plays favorites with another costar: her 6-year-old son, Mekhai, who plays J.J.'s son Henry.

"It was just a walk in the park for him," she explained of Mekhai joining back on the show's 100th episode. "Me, on the other hand, I was a nervous wreck. I was, like, shaking and... oh gosh, it was horrible. But I've since moved past that, and he's been so easy. It's been so much fun for him to be on set and play with Mommy, and it's all just pretend for him."

On stealing A.J.'s style

In fact, being a busy working mom has inspired Cook to branch out off set as well. Today, she launches her first fashion collaboration with Ideel so fans can sample A.J.'s effortless style.

On grabbing the opportunity, she told us, "I really do love fashion, and I love easy fashion. I mean, c'mon, let's be realistic. I'm a mom. Kim Kardashian can do it in stiletto heels, but I can't — I'm a little more practical. You can be stylish and still be practical."

Her collection — four looks including morning workout, mom-on-the-go, red carpet and, yes, even J.J.-inspired — reflects that distinct blend of laid-back, but still chic style Cook is often approached over. "It's been a lot of fun to pull all these looks together and put it out there and say, 'Yeah, I'd wear this,'" she said.

Mandy Patinkin tells us how he really feels about Criminal Minds

But, although she admits she'd love to venture into the lifestyle/fashion arena further in the future, there's no need for Criminal Minds fans to panic just yet.

"I love my Criminal Minds fans," she said, "and I don't think I'm going anywhere."

Ebola is here in Texas, and my response as a mother scares me

0
0

He regularly interacts with African nationals, so this news hit extremely close to home. My first response was, "Oh God, what if my child has been exposed?"

This thought, like the countless other times I've thought it with a million different threats, quickly led into a cycle of increasingly sensational thoughts. "What if my child gets it? What if my child dies? What if my child has to live without a mother if I've been exposed?"

And then, "What can I put on social media to declare what I'm really thinking — that this is all about me and my residence in Dallas?"

Wow. It's not. If the Centers for Disease Control is right, then I have nothing to worry about even though the deadly virus is in my city. But here's what we should be worrying about: As of Sept. 23 of this year, there were nearly 7,000 cases of Ebola virus in Africa, with over 3,000 deaths. Some experts project that 1.4 million Africans will die from Ebola in the next six months. They don't have the medical equipment and the community health mechanisms to stop the disease in its tracks like we do here in Dallas. My worst fears about Ebola won't be realized, but 7,000 families have already realized their worst nightmares, and those numbers are soon to grow exponentially.

I don't know what the answer is. It's human nature to make all crises an exercise in self-absorption, and I'm not sure we can do anything about that. But whatever it is — whether it's reports of the Ebola virus in America or a kidnapping in a community or a car crash that kills local teenagers — parents need to reject the impulse to make breaking news all about their personal worries. There are real people who are suffering already, and it cheapens their grief to steal it and turn it into self-absorption.

My penance? I plan to donate at least a dollar every time I choose sensationalism and self-absorption over genuine, meaningful and others-centered concern.

Jimmy Kimmel is a danger to the internet

0

According to McAfee, a computer security company, the Jimmy Kimmel Live! host is the most dangerous celebrity to search for online. After learning the news, Kimmel addressed his late-night audience and said, "They say that if you search my name... there's a one in five chance you'll land on a malicious website."

Jimmy Kimmel starts a big fake trend at NYFW

Kimmel went on to say that "it's an honor just to be nominated, but to win this thing [is even better]," and joked that after searching for the No. 2 person on the same list, DJ Armin van Buuren — who he didn't know — he now had a virus.

Noting that the No. 7 person was Britney Spears, Kimmel said that it is usually a woman who tops the list, and that the only other man to make to No. 1 was Brad Pitt back in 2008.

VIDEO: Kanye West ends Jimmy Kimmel feud with epic rant

"So there's one more thing Brad Pitt and I have in common," he boasted. "The price of being sexy, I guess."

But, he admitted that he couldn't believe he shared something with Pitt since he was always so nerdy in school. "Who would have guessed that a boy who used to carry a briefcase in junior high and played the clarinet would end up being the most dangerous person of 2014? You see that, nerds? Anything is possible."

Jimmy Kimmel welcomes baby with wife Molly McNearney

Other celebs to make the top of the list include Ciara, who landed at No. 3, Flo Rida at No. 4, Bruce Springsteen at No. 5, Blake Shelton at No. 6, Jon Bon Jovi at No. 8, Chelsea Handler at No. 9 and Christina Aguilera at No. 10. Stars who made the top 50 include Jimmy Fallon, Kate Winslet, Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Aniston.

As the No. 1 person on the list, Kimmel's name carries a 19 percent chance of getting you on a website that is positive for spyware, a virus or malware, so internet users beware.

Dog breeds that are perfect for really lazy people

Greyhound

Couch potato canines 1

Couch potato canines 1

Despite its reputation as a speed racer, the Greyhound prefers lazing around to racing. Give your furry friend a comfy place on the couch with you and enjoy those long afternoon naps guilt-free.

Chinese Shar-Pei

Couch potato canines 2

Couch potato canines 2

Though the Shar-Pei isn't known as a chronic cuddler, this devoted dog has a quiet, calm demeanor unless it perceives a threat to its humans or territory. The wrinkly canine has low exercise needs, tends to easily overheat and wants to be indoors more than outdoors.

Great Dane

Couch potato canines 3

Couch potato canines 3

If you want a larger-than-life companion to share Netflix marathons in bed, get a Great Dane (and a king-sized bed, if you don't have one already). This tall, often dark and handsome dog can't wait to snuggle up and snooze.

Bullmastiff

Couch potato canines 4

Couch potato canines 4

The Bullmastiff is a massive canine that isn't as devoted to exercise as it is to being devoted to its humans. Though this intelligent dog learns quickly, it's more interested in taking care of its pack than fetching a ball or going for long runs. The downside is that this big dog is also a big drooler, which means you will have to get off the couch occasionally to clean it up.

English Bulldog

Couch potato canines 5

Couch potato canines 5

This stately pup thrives on attention and would rather be at your side taking naps than chasing toys across the park. Though the English Bulldog does need a short daily walk, it will never be disappointed to come home and sit around with you.

Tibetan Spaniel

Couch potato canines 6

Couch potato canines 6

The bold, warm-hearted Tibbie prefers to be with a human pack that doesn't relish long runs or repetitive ball fetching. The small canine's short legs disqualify it from being an exercise addict's first choice. However, for the family that loves to laze in the house or the backyard, this little lioness is a good choice.

Chinese Crested

Couch potato canines 7

Couch potato canines 7

A renowned lap dog, the Chinese Crested craves warm human bodies more than shivering outside at the park. Despite being named The World's Ugliest Dog, this diminutive pup has a happy personality and lives to charm you while you cuddle together for hours and hours.

Pekingese

Couch potato canines 8

Couch potato canines 8

A low-activity canine, the Pekingese acts like it's too dignified to exert too much energy. Preferring to rule the roost than be ruled, this headstrong dog does need a strong human leader to teach it basic house rules and boundaries starting in puppyhood or you'll end up losing your lazy days to disciplining your pup and cleaning messes up.

Shih-Tzu

Couch potato canines 9

Couch potato canines 9

The Shih-Tzu was originally bred to be a lap dog for Chinese Emperors and is still considered to be the perfect companion dog for people who want a pup to love rather a dog that loves exercise. This fun little furball is a sweetheart that can't wait to cuddle up with you for every movie marathon you have on your list.

Pug

Couch potato canines 10

Couch potato canines 10

With a single glance, you can tell that the flat-faced, short-legged Pug is more a couch companion than a jogging buddy. This lovable dog can't stand to be alone and is well known for loud snoring, which when combined, means you two lazy couch potatoes are made for each other.

Chihuahua

Couch potato canines 11

Couch potato canines 11

This pint-sized pup may appear high-strung, but the Chihuahua actually needs little exercise and can certainly get it running after you while you go from pantry with bag of chips in hand to the couch where your remote control is located.

Jeff Goldblum brings Jurassic Park to a lucky couple's wedding

We've got to hand it to GE. Their creative commercial for a new LED lightbulb, called Link, has really opened our eyes to the wonder of good lighting. It's also gifted us with quite an eyeful of Jeff Goldblum.

The Jurassic Park actor is well known for playing quirky characters, but he's probably not the first person you think of when you hear the word "stud" — yet that's exactly what Cartoon Network's Adult Swim comedy duo Tim and Eric have turned Goldblum into in this hilarious commercial.

As the mock-infomercial begins, Goldblum asks, "What does it take to live a life of fame?" and answers, "Really great lighting." He then proceeds to tout the benefits of great lighting from various rooms in his bachelor pad, including a hilarious moment in his piano/hot tub room.

We didn't know they made swim trunks that tiny, Jeff.

Jeff Goldblum belts out the Jurassic Park theme song — with lyrics (VIDEO)

Done in the style of an infomercial, the piece goes on to offer a testimonial from a woman who complains that before she purchased the Link lightbulb system, she had to go home to "a dark house and an unfamous, non-celebrity husband," but now that she uses Link, her husband looks like — you guessed it — Jeff Goldblum.

We've got to hand it to Goldblum, who obviously has an awesome sense of humor. Not only does he crack us up with his catlike famous-guy moves, but he also really makes us curious about the Link lightbulb. And he does it with unexpected panache. When he tells us, "Kiss your horribly lit, non-successful life goodbye," we kind of believe him.

If only we had our own sweaty lighting servant to send out for bulbs.
