Aaron Carter finally gives up on rekindling Hilary Duff romance

Aaron Carter is finally admitting that, despite his best efforts, things with Hilary Duff really are over.

Hilary Duff trades work for the beach in new music video >>

"If I'm too open about how I feel, then people wanna nag and pick and poke at me," Carter said during an interview with Wenn. "I don't know Hilary [Duff] either. She don't know me and I don't know her. I just need to shut up now about it. I think it's time..."

A few months ago, the singer made headlines when he professed he still had feelings for his ex, Hilary Duff.

"I don't know who she is today, she doesn't know who I am today, but I would sweep her off her feet if I ever got a chance to again and fix what I did wrong," Carter said in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight.

Aaron Carter's desperate to get ex-girlfriend Hilary Duff back >>

He has also taken to Twitter more than once to confirm his feelings are still there.

Unfortunately, Duff is just not feeling it. Though the starlet is currently uncoupled with her husband, Mike Comrie, the two are dedicated to trying to make their relationship work. They were married in 2010 and have a son together named Luca.

BuzzFeed asked Duff about Carter's declarations and she admitted she wasn't expecting the question. "I don't know how I feel. I mean, that was so long ago, and obviously I'm still married and I have a baby and we kind of just... yeah, don't know each other. So yeah..."

Hilary Duff talks "really difficult" split from Mike Comrie >>

Carter and Duff broke up in 2003.

We can't help but wonder if Carter's emotional confessions are all just a clever publicity stunt since the singer conveniently has a new single called "Ooh Wee" out on Oct. 14. He's also on his Aaron Cater's Wonderful World tour right now, which kicked off on Sept. 18.

Do you think Aaron Carter really still has feelings for Hilary Duff or is it a ploy to boost his single and tour?

Gotham premiere review: The gang's all here

3 Comics you can read right now to brush up on Batman >>

It's hard to pull off suspense when the vast majority of your audience already knows who will make it further in the series and who won't, but Gotham does an absolutely splendid job of keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. When Fish Mooney had Gordon and his partner, Bullock, hanging in the meat freezer, preparing to be butchered, or when Gordon was walking Oswald/Penguin to the end of the pier to shoot him, we knew it would turn out fine. But the excitement remained. And everyone put on a splendid performance.

Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova) — the show opens on Kyle making her way through the heart of Gotham while pilfering what she needs to survive: a half-gallon of milk from a woman's grocery bag and a wallet full of money from a guy in a fancy suit. The only time we hear her speak is when she delivers the milk to a stray cat. If you didn't already know who the light-footed teenybopper would eventually become, you do now. Did you know Catwoman was there the night Bruce Wayne's parents were murdered, though? And so begins Kyle's silent obsession with the richest boy in Gotham.

Comic-Con 2014: 5 Reasons we're 100 percent ready for Gotham >>

Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) — Mazouz is stunning as Bruce, a mostly quiet, but still commanding, young heir and recent orphan. Young Wayne builds a bond and expects loyalty from Det. Gordon from the very beginning: not just because Gordon promises it, but because he's desperate for justice. Mazouz nails the quick transition from happy-go-lucky kid to the dark, brooding man he is as an adult. This isn't a kids' show, though. It's a show about...

Detective James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) — we already know Gordon from Wayne's adulthood, but we've never seen his backstory until Gotham came along. Gordon shows up straight out of fighting in a war and carries with him the sense of duty and respect for justice and the job that has already been drilled into him. His partner is corrupt as f*** and he's working with half the city's leaders and justice system working against him, but Gordon is bound and determined to turn the city around.

Detective Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) — is Bullock a bad guy or just someone who got tired of playing the system? By the end of the premiere, he freely admits he's up Mooney and Falcone's sleeve. Gordon's job may seem infinitely harder with a partner so corrupt, but it might just lead him straight to the problem.

Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) — while Mooney feels overacted, it's actually quite perfect for the role. She's a somewhat-sleazy crime boss who enjoys being entertained and doesn't respond well to being threatened or betrayed. Gordon is on her bad side now, but she's on his, as well.

How good is Gotham? So good that Netflix already bought the rights >>

Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin (Robin Taylor) — it's no surprise that Penguin is already a show favorite. Taylor's maniacal grin and sinister look are absolutely spot-on for the role. And any '90s kid will tell you that Penguin is their favorite Batman villain. How much more will we see of him now that Gordon has pretended to kill him and told him to never return to Gotham? Oh, we suspect plenty! (Side note: How gross/twisted/awesome was it that he killed that fisherman for his sandwich?)

Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) — we've met the future Mrs. Gordon and we're absolutely in love. Did we miss something from the comics, though? When major crimes pops by for a visit and refers to who Barbara "really" is, what does she mean? And did anyone get a distinctly lustful moment between the lovely detective and Barbara... or did we imagine that?

We also caught a glimpse of two players who will eventually play a bigger part in Gordon and Wayne's lives.

Edward Nigma — did you catch the name of that staffer in the evidence room? You know, the one with the "questions" and riddles? You're looking at the wiry man who will eventually become The Riddler (formerly portrayed by Jim Carrey).

Ivy — that little ginger girl who plays the daughter of the man framed for the Waynes' murders is clearly the future Poison Ivy. She may not give the name we best know her by from the comics, but there's no doubt in our minds that it's her. In one swift moment, one scam from Bullock, Mooney and co., Ivy has turned from a scared little girl into one of Bruce Wayne's future enemies.

All in all, we're hooked on Gotham. With our expectations riding so high on this show, it could have turned into a huge letdown. Instead, Fox, DC, McKenzie and everyone else on the cast exceeded those expectations. We know where it all goes... but we can't wait to watch it get there.

Scott Foley, shirtless, in a bed with puppies will get you excited for Scandal (VIDEO) >>

The ridiculously gorgeous star had to cure some residual puppy fever, it seems, because he shared a snap Saturday of a ridiculously cute puppy. Unfortunately, his shirt was on in the pic.

"I got the 'get an iPhone get a dog deal,'" he tweeted with the photo of a very curious black and white pup. "Anyone else?"

And now, People reveals the puppy is a way of preparing for fatherhood — Foley is expecting his third baby with his wife, Marika Dominczyk. Foley joked at an event that he's "so tired" already that the new baby may as well be accompanied by a puppy.

"My new motto is, 'Just give me the mess.' Just throw it all my way. I'll take it, it doesn't matter," the Scandal star joked to People. "You're never ready, especially for number three," he added.

Scott Foley remains craving-free with baby three on the way >>

The puppy, a Lab mix that the Foley clan named Frankie, was adopted from the pound. Foley's two kids, 4-year-old daughter, Malina, and 2-year-old son, Keller, helped pick her out, but that didn't stop them from having some mixed feelings about the new addition.

"My daughter is in love with her, picks her up, carries her everywhere," Foley said. "My son won't step on the ground because he's terrified of her."

Luckily, it sounds like Foley will be able to spend plenty of time at home helping to ease the transition.

"I'm so fortunate that this job affords me time to be with my kids," he said. "I'm lucky enough to spend more time with my kids than the normal father… at least I tell my wife that when she gets mad at me."

Here's hoping the kids take to the new human baby that's on the way better than they took to the puppy.

16-Year-old human Barbie claims she's had no plastic surgery (VIDEO) >>

As if we need to point this out, but Jasmine Tridevil (that's not her real name, but it's what she wants to go by from now on) has three boobs.

The 21-year-old Florida massage therapist opened up about her extra endowment during an interview on Real Radio 104.1. She said the third breast was surgically added "a few months ago" and that it cost $20,000 to have the surgery. But why?

"I got it because I wanted to make myself unattractive to men," Tridevil said. "I don't wanna date anymore."

As if that's going to work.

The pros and cons of plastic surgery >>

And if you want to know what kind of surgeon is crazy enough to perform this procedure, keep wondering.

"They did have an issue with it and it was really hard finding somebody who would do it. Because they're breaking the code of ethics to do it," Tridevil said in her interview. "That's why he made me sign a non-disclosure agreement because he's afraid he could get in trouble. But I called like 50 or 60 doctors, nobody wanted to do it."

Apparently, Tridevil is hoping her questionable medical decision will lead to a career change.

"I was making really good money [being a licensed massage therapist], but now I'm trying to star in a reality show instead. I don't like that job," she said. "My whole dream is to get this show on MTV. I hired a camera crew individually, so I'm the producer of this show right now."

She's been hashtagging photos of herself on social media with #MTV, trying to get the attention of the network. Here's hoping it works out, because, besides the chance of nobody taking her seriously ever again, Tridevil has a lot invested in this venture.

"I saved up for two years and I didn't spend any of that money and I'm dumping every penny I have into this," she said. "If this doesn't work, I'm through."

Banana roll lipo is the latest surgery trend for a perfect bum

$
0
0

A banana roll is that little pocket of fat that sits under each butt cheek. And since 2014 has been declared "Year of the Butt" (which is weird in its own right because, well, butts have always existed and always been beautiful), everyone is supposedly striving to get a Kim Kardashian or Nicki Minaj juicy double. This means that squats and lunges are the exercise du jour, curvy jeans are cool and a little padding in the back is considered a good thing, instead of something to diet away. (All of which are cool and necessary improvements, by the way.) But, heaven forbid, any of that padding ends up in a non-socially-acceptable place like, say, under your butt cheeks.

Good thing there's a plastic surgery to fix that.

"Removing that roll is an effective way of creating greater definition between the top of the thighs and the buttocks; however, you must be careful not to remove too much, as this can cause the buttocks to droop," says Dr. Dennis Wolf to the Daily Mail.

He explains that "'banana roll lipo' is often used in conjunction with fat transfer to the bum cheeks. The procedure means the top of the patient's thighs are reduced and this unwanted fat is then added to their bottom to make it more curvaceous. The two treatments combined are said to help achieve the perfect posterior. The patient has the dreaded 'banana roll' removed whilst improving the definition of their buttocks for a curvier silhouette."

But, he cautions, don't get too excited yet. The effect doesn't last very long unless you are dieting and exercising to maintain it.

While I'm all for helping a woman feel her best — and if that includes some surgery, I will not judge — adding yet another normal body part to the list of things we must obsessively worry over feels unproductive at best and downright crazy-making at worst. Some might say that this is just another celebrity fad that will skip most of us, but normal women have shown they will do a lot of things to get a perfect butt, including back-alley surgeries and injections that can be disfiguring and even fatal.

So, until we stop vilifying normal female bodies and perpetuating the ideal of perfection, we will continue to end up with stories like this. If it's not banana roll surgery, it will be something else. While I realize this is a lofty goal, the more of us who add our voices to the growing roar of dissent, the sooner we'll see change. In the meantime, I'm waiting for someone to invent "banana roll shaping underwear." It'll happen.

Sir Ben Kingsley played a nasty trick on a fan (VIDEO)

Produced by the same studio behind such stop-action films as ParaNorman and Coraline, The Boxtrolls is a family film about a mischievous subterranean gang of adorable hoarders who make kooky inventions from things they find in the streets of Cheesetown above. One night they steal a human boy named Eggs, whom they raise as part of their clan.

Although the film is entirely stop-motion, Kingsley stresses that the film is not just for kids. "This family film — and it is a family film — does not exclude half the members of the family. This is for everybody."

What we learned from Disney's Into the Woods trailer >>

Sir Ben Kingsley plays Archibald Snatcher, a man determined to exterminate the Boxtrolls, because he considers the troublesome garbage-pickers a threat to Cheesetown.

We asked the cheery Kingsley how it was that he could play "bad" so well. "The trick of playing anything that dramatically is seen as bad is to find that crack within that you're always compensating for," replied Kingsley. "The villain is coming out of some bitter disappointment, some loss, some abuse... Seriously, you've got to find that crack and love it, and look after it, and realize that's why he's ambitious."

Kingsley's character in the film invents a giant fiery contraption to do his dirty work, leading to ample opportunities for more Boxtroll high jinks.

Apparently the Academy Award-winning actor is no stranger to mischief himself, and admitted to once (playfully) scaring the bejeezus out of a film student.

"I played a terrible trick on somebody once," admitted Kingsley. "It was a screening of Sexy Beast for some film students and I was to talk with them afterwards. And I wasn't onstage. I was waiting outside the crash doors. A young student opened the crash doors to leave the cinema and found himself face-to-face with me, just having seen Sexy Beast. And you know what I did? I said 'What are you looking at?' and he fell backwards into the auditorium. I couldn't resist."

Elle Fanning also sat down with SheKnows to discuss her character, Winnie, a boisterous young girl who discovers Eggs (and subsequently, the Boxtrolls) and decides to help him try to fit in with the humans so that he can protect his unconventional clan.

"I've never played a character like her before," said Fanning. "She's so dramatic, and I felt like I could kind of overdo it and it would be acceptable."

Elle Fanning: Wise and stylish beyond her 16 years >>

Fanning admitted that she's a big fan of stop-motion films. "Everything is handmade," gushes the actress. "When you watch it, you feel like a certain heart has gone into it. It just stands out from all other animation for me. I love it."

Because the film is stop-motion, all of the actors' voice work had to be done in the studio, where, Fanning admits, sometimes things got a little silly.

"It's very funny the way you do these, because you feel really weird," confessed Fanning. "After you do the scenes and you do all the lines, they give you a sheet of noises, so you just literally go down the line and just do all the noises."

Watch the video below to see Fanning recreate one of the weirdest noises she had to make for the film.

The Boxtrolls opens Sept. 26 and also stars Tracy Morgan, Toni Collette, and Simon Pegg.

How to make the best cheesy vegan breakfast tacos ever

$
0
0

Even though I am not 100 percent vegetarian or vegan, I really enjoy eating plant-based recipes most of the time. But finding vegan substitutes for things like eggs can be a little tricky until you get a full grasp of the wonderful veggie-friendly ingredients you can get nowadays.

To re-create scrambled egg breakfast tacos, I used silken tofu rather than firm tofu in this dish, since it mimics eggs almost perfectly. The nutritional yeast is a cheesy, nutty, slightly sweet vegan ingredient full of B vitamins and is perfect for mocking that delicious cheese flavor. Looking at this dish, you really wouldn't be able to tell this is actually tofu, and while it obviously has a different taste and a slightly different consistency, it's perfect for those who miss eggs or for vegans who don't.

Whip up these easy breakfast tacos for the morning or even for dinner.

Cheesy vegan breakfast taco recipe

Serves 6

Ingredients:

For the tacos

  • 6 whole-grain taco-size tortillas
  • 1 pound silken tofu
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 medium sweet or red onion, sliced
  • 1/2 cup nutritional yeast flakes (found at health food stores or online)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For toppings

  • Thinly sliced green onions
  • Fresh jalapeño peppers
  • Salsa

Directions:

  1. Spray a large pan with nonstick cooking spray, and warm the pan over medium heat.
  2. Drain the silken tofu, crumble it into the pan, and cook for 6 to 8 minutes, cooking away as much moisture as possible.
  3. Add in the diced peppers and onions, and cook for about 3 minutes or until slightly softened.
  4. Add the nutritional yeast, garlic powder and pepper flakes, and season with salt and pepper. Continue to cook for several more minutes, and then remove from the heat.
  5. Divide the tofu mixture among the tortillas, and top with green onions, jalapeños and your favorite salsa. Best served warm.

INTERVIEW: Is there any song Pentatonix won't cover?

$
0
0

Pentatonix's first two albums immediately broke into the Billboard 200's Top 20, and now they're back to try, again. PTX, Vol. III releases on Tuesday, Sept. 23. If their past records are any indication, this could be their best performing album yet. The gorgeous gang is more than just a group of young, pretty faces with big vocals and no instrumental backups, though. Part of their schtick is how approachable and inspiring they are to their fans. That isn't just a happy accident. It's part of the "image" they've cultivated.

Sweetness! We were stoked when The Sing-Off returned >>

"I think we really like inspiring people," shared Kirstie Maldonado, the only girl of the group. "I feel like we all have pretty humble beginnings. We're just choir nerds, and we're really nerdy and geeky. Yeah, all five of us are different. But the common bond is music, and that's what we love doing and why we're doing this. That's really what we're in it for, and I love when we get to meet people, and they're like, 'Oh, you've inspired me to create this group or join my choir and do this.' To really just follow any passion you have, and it can go past music, too. But we really fought to make this a thing and make it work for us. And so that's the message we like bringing to our fans. To persevere."

With such a great personal message, we wondered: Do they have any fan stories that have stuck with them over time? It turns out they have had a few interactions with fans that have really meant a lot to them.

"This mom came up with her son and, this is kind of dark, but was like, 'My son identifies as a trans man and he was contemplating suicide.' It was very sad," shared the band. "She was like, 'Thank you so much for what you do. It really inspired him to come out of his shell and be himself.' It was very touching."

Jewel's new Sing-Off coaching job >>

Fans of Pentatonix will know how personal that story would be. During their stint on The Sing-Off, the group visited the headquarters for The Trevor Project and filmed a special segment. Later, comments about members Mitch Grassi and Scott Hoying being homosexual were ended from the clip. The group went on to talk about that, in general, they're all so bonded that they find they put worth and importance on many of the same things, which certainly helps with songwriting, too.

Proof of the band's ability to be affected by their fans comes from an equally sweet story from Maldonado, who shared another great fan moment.

"I have it saved in my room. It was this cute little handwritten letter, and it was just saying that she was going through hard times," Maldonado shared. "And I feel like everyone at some point goes through hard times and it's relative to you. She was going through hard times and felt like drained from anything. She felt like she couldn't find happiness from anything or really find the motivation to do anything. And that one day, she happened upon one of our songs and just it was like a spark," shared the girl. "'The five of you really inspired me and it was just really nice to have a feeling of light and motivation, again, and start living again.' And it was really touching, the fact that we could be that for people where there's so many artists that I looked up to growing up that did that for me. It was just really special."

Want more music news and reviews? Sign up for our newsletter >>

Speaking of rough times, we wondered if anyone in the group had a rough time in high school. After all, kids in band and choir are rarely the popular kids. It turns out Maldonado, Grassi and Hoying all went to the same arts-oriented high school. So, they weren't bigger losers than anyone else.

"I loved high school," Maldonado admitted. "I was such a loser, but I had a great time."

While they may have escaped bullying in high school, it's something that exists even in adulthood and especially once you're in the spotlight. Since so much of Pentatonix's catalog is made up of covers, we wondered if there were any songs they wouldn't want to cover for fear of a negative reaction. The answer was pretty surprising: They aren't up for covering Taylor Swift.

"One that comes to mind is 'I Knew You Were Trouble,'" shared the band. "We were gonna arrange it, but we couldn't find a key that works for any of our voices that we liked. It was just really hard to sing. Like, with what we do, we have to be able to sing it perfectly live and just we could already tell it was going to be a mess. We just were intimidated by it. It's a big song, if you think about it."

The band also admitted they'd probably never cover "Bohemian Rhapsody." While their fans would love it, old school Queen fans would dish out too much hate to make it worth the risk. Admittedly, that's going to forever be the one song we wait to hear from them. While "Bohemian Rhapsody" won't be on PTX, Vol. III, there are still plenty of awesome tracks worth a spin when the album releases on Tuesday. Check it out!

Nicolas Cage explains why he still feels like an outsider

During a recent interview with The Times Magazine, Cage opened up about the choices he has taken in his career (some very good and some complete flops).

Nicolas Cage's steamy sex photos have been stolen! >>

"I'm proud of the chances I've taken. They haven't all worked, but I had a concept and I've pushed for it. It's probably annoyed a lot of critics and a lot of people who didn't get in step with it, but I'm proud I did it," the Leaving Las Vegas actor confessed.

"Tolstoy said something to the effect of, it doesn't matter whether the response you get is love or hatred, because you've created an effect. What's not worthwhile is when it sits there and people forget about it. But whether people love it or hate it, at least you've done something. That gives me some solace."

VIDEO: Nicolas Cage as Superman? It almost happened >>

Cage went on to admit that sometimes he feels like an outsider because he thinks in a different way that is often misunderstood by critics and the general public.

"Sometimes I feel like an outsider," he admitted. "When you're endowed with an original way of thinking, or with a highly active imagination, you can become quickly ostracized. You can feel isolated and misunderstood."

Surprisingly, Cage also cares about the public's opinion of him. Even after decades in showbiz, the harsh criticisms still affect him and manage to get under his skin.

Doctors shouldn't decide if a woman can be sterilized

$

0

For women like Maggie, the decision to not have children is a no-brainer.

Maggie is a woman in her 30s who, unlike many of her peers, is not fighting a biological clock. Probably because she has never wanted children, but more than likely, because Maggie also got sterilized — at the age of 23.

Like most women who seek permanent sterilization, Maggie had a difficult time finding a doctor who would do the procedure for her. It wasn't until she became accidentally pregnant and had an abortion that the medical community seemed to realize she was actually serious about her intent to never have children. She finally found a doctor (a female one, at that) who agreed to sterilize her.

While Maggie's choice may not be a mainstream one, she's definitely not the only young woman who has sought sterilization. "Over and over again male and female doctors would question my judgment. You're too young, they told me, and you might change your mind. I was actually told by one of my doctors that I should give up because doctors probably wouldn't help me until I was closer to menopause or if I've already had children," one woman said.

As a woman who had an unplanned pregnancy, I definitely have mixed feelings about the sterilization-no-sterilization debate. On one hand, I think it's impossible to predict what becoming a mother is like until you become one and, like in my case, even when it happened and I didn't feel ready, I can safely say it was the best thing to ever to happen to me.

But that was me and my life situation and it's hard to say that other women would have the same experience. I think the issue lies in the fact that so many of us know that we think, with a lot of certainty when we're young, that having kids sounds akin to torture — only to change our minds later. I would hate to think that a woman might miss out on something she may actually love because of a decision she made fresh out of college. I mean, not to be crass here, but tattoo removals are a thing, right? So a doctor faced with a 23-year-old woman demanding permanent sterilization is acting hesitantly out of fear of doing a lot of damage to a lot of lives someday if that woman changes her mind.

But on the other hand, it doesn't really seem to me like it should be a doctor's decision at all when you get right down to it. Sure, there are moral and ethical and religious debates galore we could get into here, but bottom line, what we are really talking about here is the question of whether or not a woman can actually decide for herself if she wants children or not, before she ever risks getting pregnant in the first place — or if a doctor gets to make that call.

What do you think? Should a woman — at any age — have the right to choose permanent sterilization for herself?

6 Nasty diseases you can get from your pet

The numbers are unsettling: There are at least 39 diseases we can catch directly from animals, at least 48 diseases we can get from the bite of bugs that bit an infected animal and at least 42 diseases we can get by ingesting or handling food or water contaminated with animal feces, according to WebMD's Diseases From Animals: A Primer.

Before you adopt any type of pet, do your research. Talk to the experts — both those with animal and medical credentials — to determine what types of risks, if any, your new pet might bring. Here, we've rounded up a mere six of the nastier diseases you could contract from your non-human family member:

1 — Cat Scratch Disease

Your child tries to pick up the kitty, and it scratches her arm. You forget about it until several days later when the scratch turns into something more. "Cat Scratch Disease looks like a bug bite or a bump and occurs three to 10 days after a scratch," says Dr. Debra Jaliman, assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

"The lymph nodes in the area swell and may become tender," says Dr. Jaliman. "It's caused by bacteria and can resolve on its own but may need to be treated by antibiotics." Prevention is the key, and that means supervising your child when he's playing with cats and kittens.

2 — Mycobacterium marinum

"Mycobacteria marinum are free-living bacteria that can cause infections in humans who keep home aquariums and can result from simply cleaning out a fish tank," says Dr. Jaliman. "If you have a cut on your hand, the bacteria can enter and cause an infection that eventually manifests itself as a series of red nodules or lesions."

The lesions, which are typically 1-2.5 centimeters in diameter, appear after an incubation period of two to four weeks. While the infection usually spreads slowly, some cases can progress rather rapidly. Antibiotics will resolve most superficial cases, but surgical intervention is sometimes necessary for deep, extensive infections.

Protect yourself by carefully covering cuts, scrapes or sores while cleaning fish tanks or handling fish. Better yet, wear waterproof gloves and follow with a thorough washing of your hands and forearms with soap and running water. And warn the little ones to always keep their hands out of the aquarium.

3 — Ringworm

Ringworm, scientifically known as dermatophytosis, is caused by a fungal infection of the skin. Despite the name, no worms are involved. Rather, the fungus — or parasitic infection — feeds on the keratin found in the outer layer of your skin, hair and nails.

Anyone, adults and children alike, can get ringworm. You can catch the ring-shaped rash from direct contact with an infected animal, like the family dog.

Most ringworm can be treated with OTC creams. If the fungus keeps coming back, however, your doctor can prescribe pills that will kill it. Without treatment, the ringworm may cause your skin to blister and become infected. If this happens, you will need an antibiotic.

4 — Salmonella

Salmonella bacteria is often found on reptiles and amphibians such as frogs, toads, salamanders, turtles, lizards and snakes. Keep these pets in their habitat and do not let them wander around the house (especially the kitchen). Wash your hands after handling the creatures, and please refrain from kissing them. Ew. Do not clean reptile cages in tubs or sinks that your family uses. And keep salmonella-prone pets away from children under age 1 and people with weak immune systems.

Keep in mind, too, that this severe gastrointestinal infection may also result from contact with pet feces. Always wash your hands (and remind the kids, too) after playing with your pet or handling its waste or waste containers.

5 — Parrot fever

Psittacosis, aka parrot fever, is an infectious disease caused by bacteria contracted from pet parrots, macaws and cockatiels. It's relatively rare — only about 50 reported cases in the U.S. each year — but experts suggest that many more cases that are not correctly diagnosed may occur.

Symptoms of parrot fever include fever, of course, along with chills, headache, muscle aches and a dry cough. It may also manifest itself through severe pneumonia, which can be fatal. Untreated psittacosis can lead to serious nerve, heart and liver problems.

Parrot fever is treated with an aggressive series of antibiotics. Severely ill patients may receive the antibiotics intravenously.

Before bringing a pet bird into your household, be sure to have it examined by a vet. Birds should be purchased only from reputable suppliers and should be isolated for several weeks before it's introduced to your family. Always wash your hands after handling your bird or cleaning the cage.

6 — Toxoplasmosis

If your pet cat is allowed to roam around outdoors, it is possible that it will pick up a parasite called toxoplasma gondii. Most cats fight off the infection before it becomes contagious, but sometimes cats shed the parasite in their feces. Danger zones for contracting this infectious disease are litter boxes, garden soil and children's sandboxes.

Toxoplasmosis can cause long-lasting, flu-like symptoms in the average person, but it can be fatal for someone with a damaged immune system. The worst infections are in pregnant women: The parasitic organism can go to the fetus and cause the baby to die or suffer lifetime illness.

Jimmy Kimmel masterminds perfect Friends reunion (VIDEO) >>

During an interview with Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday, Cox recalled the first time she played the role of Monica Geller in the hit NBC TV series and how the whole cast watched the first episode the night it aired.

"The whole cast watched," she revealed. "Maybe even [director] Jimmy Burrows and maybe the creators. We did it every single Thursday for like the first year. And then by the 10th year it was…"

"Like enough already?" Kimmel suggested.

5 Reasons Monica is, hands down, the best character on Friends >>

However, it was not Geller or her style that the public were swooning over, but rather Jennifer Aniston's character Rachel Green and her awesome haircut. So, was Cox jealous that no one wanted to have her character's style and hairstyle?

"You know what? It kind of bums me out, why didn't they? We had the same hairdresser," she said, laughing about the duo's famous hairdresser Chris McMillan. "I don't understand. I got nothing. I kept changing mine, like, 'If you don't like it I'll just keep doing it,' and they never stuck!"

Courteney Cox is totally smitten with beau Johnny McDaid >>

However, Friends was not the only thing on the actress' mind. She also spoke about her engagement to rocker Johnny McDaid and the amazing proposal he'd planned with her daughter Coco.

"Johnny first asked [my daughter] Coco. He said, 'I'd like to marry your mom,' and gave her a little diamond ring. She said, 'Great, I'm going to camp tomorrow. Let's do it right now.' So, they decided they wanted to do it that night because we were leaving for Turks and Caicos, and she was going to camp," the actress explained.

"We went to Jen's house for dinner because it was Coco's birthday, and she was godmom. They made a plan to count down from three, and when they got to one, he was gonna get down on his knee and say, 'Will you marry me?' and she was gonna say, 'Will you marry him?' They planned it out. They found the perfect tree that branches that led to one trunk. It was just beautiful."

Jada Pinkett-Smith: I don't punish my kids

I'm all for learning some degree of cause and effect when it comes to raising children. For example, my son had insane crazy bedhead one morning, but didn't want to brush it. I was sick of nagging him and told him he didn't have to brush it, but he would get some crazy looks since it looks like he stuck his finger in a light socket. Looking confused at my "old person" reference to a light socket, he didn't brush it, got some weird looks (and I admit, a few admiring looks  — I suspect from some girls who are fans of Harry Styles' crazy hair) and later asked if he could get his hat out of the car. I smiled smugly, thinking I won... until I realized he still won't brush his hair, he will just wear a hat. Moving on...

There are some things, however, that I refuse to let cause and effect happen. For example, I would never let them have free rein on the computer and let them give out personal information and, in fact, I don't let them have any type of social media account until they are older. The effect, especially in this internet age, could be too long lasting.

When you are a celebrity parent, you would think you would have to be even stricter as to what your kids do online, especially with the temptations and fast lifestyles that go along with Hollywood. Celeb mom Pinkett-Smith, however, takes a different approach. In fact, she raised some eyebrows recently when she let her 13-year-old daughter Willow post this picture of her lying in bed with 20-year-old actor Moises Arias.

When the picture came out, Pinkett didn’t bat an eye about it. She also lets Willow have free rein over her fashion choices, including shaving her head bald and posting a picture showing off her tongue ring when she was 11 years old  (she later admitted it was fake), as well as letting Willow and Jaden sleep with snakes (OK, my boys would probably love that too).

Pinkett-Smith’s rationalization for her hands-off approach?

"I think we have to have more trust in our children. People have always gotten on us about not punishing the kids, and let me just talk to you about that for a minute. We raised three kids before Willow and Jaden, and especially on my goddaughter, I put so many boundaries on her — "No, you can't do that, you can't do this." And everything I tried to control, every freakin' thing I was trying to avoid, happened," she told Health magazine.

"I learned a lot from that experience and realized that while Willow and Jaden are still with me and have a safety net, I want to give them the opportunity to make mistakes and learn how to put boundaries on themselves. So by the time they're out of the house, they fly," she said.

School dress codes are officially out of control when girls in floor-length gowns are barred from dances

School dress codes

School dress codes

The school year has barely started, and already dress codes have become the laughingstock of the parenting world. At the very least, dress codes are often more of a distraction than the "inappropriate dress" kids wear to school. A ridiculous amount of time is taken out of the day to inspect and suspend kids who dare to wear something as offensive as a spaghetti-strap tank top. At the most, dress codes have been used to shame young girls for distracting boys with their clothing.

I do think it's important to teach kids to dress appropriately for school, similar to dressing appropriately for the career world. But how do you teach your teen to dress for a rigorous, hair-splitting dress code that is almost impossible to meet?

Parents of 24 young girls at the Bingham High School homecoming dance in South Jordan, Utah, could not figure what went wrong after girls were inspected and barred from the dance one by one. The perplexing part is that some girls were wearing what many would consider highly appropriate clothing: high-necked dresses and floor-length gowns.

As Jerry Seinfeld would say, "What's the deal?" Even after trying to meet the school's homecoming dance dress code, these girls could not win. One student, Taylor Gillespie, took the time to pick out a knee-length purple halter-neck dress that did not come up past mid-thigh when she sat down. She was still sent home. Taylor claims that teachers took one look at her at the door and would not let her in.

The school is sticking to its guns, i.e. strict dance dress code guidelines posted on the website. Teen girls sent home from the dance because of dress code violations have sent pictures of their gowns to the school to ask for specifics of "inappropriate dress."

A basic dress code for a high school dance sounds like a great idea — otherwise, there's bound to be a few too many pasties on the dance floor. But it's clear that this school had much better things to do with its time than police and even fabricate dress code violations on 24 female students. If this dance was anything like my high school dances, there were probably kids smoking behind the gym and spiking the punch. Why not deal with real student issues instead of checking hemlines?

Snooki's getting a mom tattoo — on her neck

Snooki has decided to get a new tattoo to honor her baby girl (who is due to be born at any time), and has decided to get it on her neck because, well, she is running out of spots.

"I really want to get a new tattoo. I have a few tattoos. A couple on my arms, back... I got a tramp stamp that was my first tattoo but whatever, I love it! The next tattoo I'm thinking can go on my neck, but I want it to resemble my kids... so Lorenzo and my baby girl who will be arriving soon," Snooki writes on her website, revealing that she wants to have three to four kids so she wants to be able to add on to her tattoo.

"Every time I have a baby, I want to add to that tattoo. So I'm thinking cute little birdies on my neck with their initials," she writes, saying she wants something original and meaningful. "It’s just something that you're going to have forever and you're always going to look at it and think OMG, I love my babies so much," she continues.

Mom tattoos aren't exactly new — in fact, I wrote an entire article on the many celebrity moms with tattoos. Angelina Jolie is one of the most notable, as she has the coordinates of all six of her kids' birthplaces tattooed on her arm. I even have a butterfly on my ankle. (I know, I'm crazy.) A neck tattoo, however, is where I would certainly draw the line because, in Snooki's own words, you will have it forever (or until you get it lasered off).

Snooki, however, defends her decision to ink up her neck.

"I don't understand the people who look at mothers who have tattoos and say you are trashy or gross. It's just a tattoo dude, lighten up. Tattoos are beautiful and it's a personal choice. Some people don't like tattoos, for others it's a form of expression. To me it's art, it's beautiful, and my body is just a plain canvas that I can fill it up with as much tattoos or anything I want," she writes.

OK, moms — spill: Do you have a mom tattoo? What are your thoughts on neck tattoos?

This is far from the first time Diesel has paid homage to Walker since his death. Aside from additional social media postings, the actor spoke on Live! With Kelly and Michael about his close friendship with Walker.

Diesel became emotional as he admitted, "I grew up in the bouncer world and we lost people while we were bouncing. But the brotherhood in Paul Walker was something completely different. It was someone that we — we grew up in the business together and we became famous together and we represented the biggest franchise together, and he was my partner and it's a strange thing to — I've been acting all my life and they don't teach you in acting how to mourn someone and simultaneously pretend they're in a scene with you."

Paul Walker died in last November in a car crash during the filming of Fast & Furious 7. Following his death, Walker's brothers, Cody and Caleb, stepped in to help film some additional scenes as Walker's character, Brian O'Conner, to effectively conclude the story line.

Fast & Furious 7 was delayed following Walker's death. It is now scheduled to be released April 2015.
